When the Dust Preaches Back

Listen. Genesis to seven reads in the Lord God formed

man of the dust of the ground and breathed into

his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a

living soul. In the divine drama of creation, nothing is

more resting than the moment when God stoops the eternal

self sufficient one bends toward the earth, not in wrath,

but in workmanship. He does not start with gold, He

does not begin with silver. He does not reach for

rubies or rare stones. No, he forms man from dust.

This detail is not incidental. It is theological. Dust is transient, fragile,

and fleeting. It has no spine, no strength, no value

on its own. And yet God chooses dust as the

beginning point of humanity. Why because the power of man

is not in the material from which he has made,

It is in the breath that animates him. When God

breathes into dust, it becomes destiny. We must grasp this truth.

We are not alive because of what we are made of.

We are alive because of who made us, in what

He breathed into us. This breath was not just to

awaken lungs, but to awaken purpose. The breath of God

gave humanity, identity. It turned weakness into wonder. It turned

dirt into a dwelling place of the divine. So when

life breaks us down, when trials reduce us to particles

of our former selves, let us not forget that God

has a history with dust. When others walk away from

broken things, God bends down and breathes again. The dust

has a sermon. It says, you may be low, but

you are not forgotten. You may be broken, but you

are still usable. You may feel unworthy, but the breath

of God can still make you live. And sometimes, when

the pain is great and the silence is long, the

dust begins to preach back, not with words, but with memory.

It reminds us that what God forms, he fells, what

he shapes he breathes into, and when he breathes new

life always follows.
