  1. All right. We are excited to have two of

  2. our guests here who have been here for a long time at Lifegate

  3. now, you know, and they've been involved in in in my life for I

  4. don't know since we moved Alabama, I want to say so we're

  5. we're super excited to have brother Jason's sister Rachel

  6. Brister here with us today all. Right, glad, glad to be here.

  7. Looking forward to it here. With you guys.

  8. Yeah, long time, long, long time.

  9. We were very young when we first met you guys way back in Athens.

  10. It's been a while. I can't remember exactly when at

  11. Athens, when it was we met, but I know we've been here since I

  12. think we were. We figured out 2007. 2007 or 8.

  13. That's when we when we first come to last.

  14. Year. So yeah.

  15. So you guys were shorter than me and now you're way taller than

  16. me. Well, crazy enough, you guys

  17. were like my Sunday school teacher right at one point,

  18. weren't you? Yes, for a small Claire's as

  19. well, So it's pretty wild. I love seeing you guys growing

  20. up and you know, seeing you as children and then now as adults

  21. living for the Lord is just brings tears to my eyes truly.

  22. That's awesome. So super excited to talk about

  23. this. You know, kind of get to know

  24. both of you better and a lot of people, you know, some of us

  25. know part of your story, but you know, we really like to kind of

  26. dive in and maybe get to know a little bit more about you and

  27. know how God's worked in your life.

  28. Who would like to kind of go 1st and and start talking a little

  29. bit about your life? Flip a coin or why don't you go

  30. ahead? Yeah, I can go ahead and start

  31. it and just kind of give you a little background, a little bit

  32. of a my, my testimony, where I'm from, how how I ended up, how I

  33. ended up here. So originally I was from

  34. Mississippi, so where I was born in Meridian, lived there for a

  35. first six years or so in my life.

  36. And actually my dad was a Baptist minister.

  37. So growing up as APK in a Baptist household.

  38. So I hear a lot of things you guys have talked about over the

  39. years of being the PKS and like, you know, now when I I didn't

  40. grow up in a church plant, it was an established church that I

  41. grew up in, but always there at the church.

  42. Same. Like, you know, there was a lot

  43. of times cleaning the churches on Saturday and then I remember

  44. my mom and dad with their typewriter putting together the

  45. church bulletin to hand out each week, or maybe it was monthly,

  46. I'm not sure. But I remember that since time

  47. my dad, well, both my mom and dad worked full time jobs while

  48. he was the preacher also. So, you know, before, I guess at

  49. that age when before I started school, I was either at home

  50. with my mom when she wasn't working or there were certain

  51. times during the during the week I would actually go to work with

  52. my dad. He drove a truck at the time for

  53. like a, a plant nursery like here you say, the Bonnie Plant

  54. Farms, that kind of thing. It was something similar to

  55. that. So I got to spend quite a few

  56. days with him, like on the road traveling all over Mississippi.

  57. But but you know, had a great great childhood living there

  58. Mississippi. Then about the time I right

  59. before I turned 7, we moved to harvest.

  60. My dad actually took a church at in harvest just down the road

  61. here Harvest Baptist Church. And that is where actually first

  62. got saved in the Baptist Church and was baptized in the name of

  63. the father, Son and Holy Spirit at the time.

  64. And you know that's that was life.

  65. You know, that was, that's how I was raised, what, what, what I

  66. was taught. So didn't know, didn't know any

  67. different, didn't know any of anything else.

  68. So we're there for a while and then eventually he took a church

  69. in Ardmore and that's where I still am today.

  70. But so I guess that was in 1992 when we moved to Ardmore.

  71. And like I said, I've been there, been there ever since.

  72. Ended up graduating school there, you know, attended church

  73. there at First Baptist in Ardmore.

  74. And, you know, everything was was great.

  75. Like I said, just living what I thought was was right.

  76. But I will say as I got older, kind of finishing high school,

  77. you know, there was certain things that kind of stood out to

  78. me at the time of, you know, I'd been saved.

  79. I'd said a prayer and accepted Jesus in my life.

  80. And I've been baptized before, but I don't know, just the

  81. thought of once saved, always saved.

  82. I don't know that just, you know, kind of kind of bother me

  83. a little bit. You know, it's like, how can

  84. this be? How can this be true?

  85. You know, how can because you know, a lot of people I hung out

  86. with and I'll say myself included, you know, you they're

  87. on church on Sundays. But then during the week, maybe

  88. you wasn't doing the things you should be doing, you know, I

  89. mean nothing, nothing bad, you know, nothing awful, but it just

  90. probably not where I needed to be.

  91. But just the thought of, you know, hey, how can I do these

  92. things but still believe, you know, once saved, always saved.

  93. I don't know, just it bother me, but not enough, I'll say, not

  94. enough that I was out looking for something else, you know.

  95. But it wasn't long after high school when I met Rachel.

  96. She was I was working at the grocery store or more.

  97. And that's where I'm at Rachel. And to the I want to say,

  98. contrary to the rumors that Cam and Colby have spread over the

  99. years, I did not meet Rachel at a family reunion.

  100. So that definitely, definitely not Yes, so, but, but yeah.

  101. So I met Rachel and immediately she invited me to church with

  102. her. This time I was going to 1st

  103. Church in Athens. So I was like, yeah, of course.

  104. So I went again, not really looking for anything at the

  105. church. I was as as you've heard before

  106. on these podcasts, this was Hadley.

  107. I was also chasing a girl, you know, That's like church.

  108. Yeah. Let's go, you know?

  109. Sure. So well.

  110. You did tell me you had to verify a few things with your

  111. dad before you started chasing though.

  112. Oh. Yes, that is true.

  113. That is true. So so she'd been coming in the

  114. store. All right, so and I kept

  115. noticing she always hey, this girl, she's always got on these

  116. skirts. What's?

  117. So I went home and asked my dad. I was like, hey, just

  118. interested. There's this girl that keeps

  119. coming in the store, so I but she's always got on the skirt.

  120. I mean, what, what do they believe?

  121. What's their religion? And she said, well, you know, it

  122. could be, could be Pentecostal, could be Holiness.

  123. He named off a couple, you know, and well, I had a very important

  124. question for him. I was like, what do you think?

  125. She shaves her legs. No.

  126. Why that why that was the question, I don't know.

  127. But you know, I mean, I'm 1819 years old, you know, there's

  128. priorities, right? So because that would that would

  129. that might have been a deal breaker.

  130. I don't know. So, but he said he actually, he

  131. kind of laughed. He said, he said, well, son, I

  132. don't know, You'll have to go find out for yourself, I guess,

  133. you know. So anyway, I took a chance and

  134. here we are. So, you know, I guess that

  135. answers that question. But so that's.

  136. Funny. Yeah.

  137. Thank goodness. Right, yes.

  138. So I guess that's that's kind of a good point right there.

  139. Kind of like the intersection. So what about you?

  140. How did you grow up? You know, Sister Rachel, what

  141. was your experience? My childhood was really a good

  142. childhood, but my parents, I've always been Apostolic

  143. Pentecostal. My parents actually were Baptist

  144. up until the point when I think about two years before I was

  145. born, they said they started feeling a hunger kind of like

  146. Jason said that there's something more out there, you

  147. know, and just got a hunger and started searching and

  148. researching things and studying the Bible and asking questions.

  149. And they were going to their pastor and different people that

  150. they trusted and saying, what is this about the Holy Ghost?

  151. You know what, what is speaking in tongues and what I'm reading

  152. this, it says, you know, be baptized in Jesus name.

  153. And they were, you know, trying to just, they just felt the

  154. hunger to learn and get draw closer to God.

  155. And they said some people couldn't answer their questions

  156. and actually even told them they weren't welcome and their church

  157. if they kept pursuing that line of thought, you know, And so mom

  158. and dad said they started trying to find other churches and they

  159. started praying and searching at home and actually got the Holy

  160. Ghost in their living room. Oh, wow, yes.

  161. After multiple, multiple days of praying and reading the Bible

  162. and studying and I had others coming over, some of their

  163. family members were coming over. And so my oldest brother and

  164. sister, Angie and Tony were young at that time.

  165. And mom and dad said, we were so caught up in the spirit of God.

  166. People would walk in our house and just say, whoa, what's going

  167. on? You know, it's so strong.

  168. And she said, I guess we neglected the kids because Angie

  169. asked him, Mom, are we ever going to eat again?

  170. They were just so caught up in in the presence of the Lord, you

  171. know, And so that's a good memory to have.

  172. But once they came to receive the Holy Ghost and got baptized

  173. and came to know the fullness, like my dad was just a mom too.

  174. We're just on fire. And just so thankful, I think to

  175. have found the truth that you know, myself growing up in it,

  176. you might, I might take it for granted sometimes how wonderful

  177. it is to know the Lord and, and to know the truth.

  178. You know, that that I just feel deep down in my soul that this

  179. is the way to live and him coming to it, you know, later

  180. and having experienced a different life, I think he just

  181. had a really strong appreciation for it, you know, and mom too.

  182. And they were just wonderful parents.

  183. You know, dad was an entrepreneur, you know, he had

  184. several businesses and just a very strong man of faith.

  185. And, you know, I just always saw his Bible, him reading his Bible

  186. and highlighting his Bible actually have one of his Bibles.

  187. That's awesome that before he died, I said mom said, what is

  188. there anything you want that made it kind of write down?

  189. She's making a list, you know, because that's just how she was.

  190. And I said I really want one of daddy's Bibles.

  191. That's that's the one thing I want and she made sure I got 1

  192. and. No, you're pretty fun.

  193. It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's really a strong statement

  194. of who he was, you know, as a person, the impact he had on

  195. your family, the impact he had on you.

  196. And that's, that's, it's admirable.

  197. So that we all trying to hold up, right?

  198. We're all trying to hold that banner forward that each of us.

  199. I mean, I want to, I want to be that for whoever comes after me,

  200. you know what I mean? I want to be that person who

  201. holds that banner up that that my kids know that, you know,

  202. that whatever comes next, you know that, you know, you're a

  203. person of faith. I'm sure you guys feel that same

  204. way. You know, most definitely you,

  205. you, you feel like, do you feel like that, like that you, that's

  206. something that drives you. You want to be that person for

  207. your family and your kids. Most definitely.

  208. And, you know, I feel like I can't live up to, you know, what

  209. he was. But I am striving to and, you

  210. know, trying to be that example. And I hope one day my kids ask

  211. for my Bible. You know, that would be a deep

  212. honor if that happened. But yeah, they were both just

  213. wonderful and just great examples, you know, not perfect

  214. by any means, you know, but I'm just very, very thankful to have

  215. had such wonderful parents for sure.

  216. And so I guess growing up you, you kind of talked about that.

  217. I guess you grew up. Did it?

  218. Did you, did you, did you feel like when you're growing up that

  219. the faith was yours or did you feel like the faith was your

  220. parents whenever you're growing up?

  221. Does that make sense what I'm asking?

  222. Yes, it most definitely does. And I would say both.

  223. You know, there had to come a point of time when I did take

  224. full ownership of it myself. But yeah, when you're a kid,

  225. you're just kind of doing what your parents tell you.

  226. And dad preached, he was not a pastor, but he did preach.

  227. And we've got some of his preaching on, on tape.

  228. We actually tried to get it off cassette tape, didn't we,

  229. recently? And try to save it into a better

  230. format. Easier format to to access, you

  231. know. That's really cool.

  232. Yeah, and it's so good that so awesome to be able to hear his,

  233. you know, messages now. So thankful for that kind of

  234. thing. I know you guys are going to

  235. really appreciate that about your dad.

  236. Absolutely. As time goes on, yeah.

  237. But so growing up in in the church, I went to camp every

  238. year. So I was going to just share,

  239. you know, when I came to know the Lord personally, but we

  240. would always go to Alabama youth Camp.

  241. And so it was in 1991. I was 9.

  242. Almost. No, it's 10, yeah, 10 years old

  243. in June, June 10th that I received the gift of the Holy

  244. Ghost. And you know, it wasn't AI kind

  245. of was just expecting to receive it sometime, you know?

  246. So just that different church services, you go to the front

  247. and pray and everything. And that night I remember, I

  248. mean, I can remember it plain as day.

  249. Like I thought I really, really want the Holy Ghost.

  250. I was a little shy and so I kind of found just a little corner

  251. over on the side. I didn't tell anybody or

  252. anything. I just went over to a wall,

  253. actually just over, over on the side of the church, the right

  254. side of the church. And I just started repenting and

  255. asking God to give me the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  256. And I'll tell you, man, he did. I had no doubts, you know, and

  257. like I said, there was nobody around me at at the point, but

  258. when I came to and there was a crowd of people around

  259. worshipping, you know, so I just kind of lost myself and the

  260. beautiful presence of the Lord as a 10 year old, you know?

  261. So I truly know without a shadow of a doubt that God can touch

  262. children, it can touch adults and touch anyone of any age.

  263. But the way I describe it was I felt like I had a light bulb

  264. somehow inside my head, and I had to be glowing.

  265. Like, I knew I was glowing. I think I even looked in the

  266. mirror to check. But I almost couldn't go to

  267. sleep, you know, I remember calling my mom and dad

  268. afterwards and sharing the news, and they're crying and

  269. rejoicing, you know? And I was just like, kept

  270. speaking in tongues all throughout the evening back into

  271. our dorm room, you know, just didn't want to stop.

  272. Yeah, you really got a hold of the Lord.

  273. I really did. And it's just, it's just so

  274. good. There's nothing like it.

  275. Absolutely. Do you, do you, did you kind of

  276. hold on to that through your teenage years or did you ever

  277. have like that, those moments of doubt, I guess, or did you just

  278. kind of hold on to that throughout?

  279. Well, like, like you say, nobody is perfect, certainly.

  280. But I never wanted to walk away from the Lord.

  281. Never. I made and still don't, you

  282. know? Yeah, He's so good to me.

  283. I just can't imagine living any other way, you know?

  284. He's so good and you go through hard times that I don't know how

  285. people that go through tough times make it without, you know,

  286. the Lord's strength. Absolutely.

  287. Because I know I couldn't. And you can attest to that too,

  288. Hun. Right.

  289. Right. Absolutely.

  290. It's the only thing that'll bring you through.

  291. But yeah. And so, you know, I guess we go

  292. through that and we, you know, kind of get you through the

  293. teenage years and that's where you meet Jason.

  294. Right, that's what you were asking me.

  295. Yes. So the teenage years, I, I

  296. witnessed a lot of people in my youth group and just

  297. acquaintances going through some tough time.

  298. I'm talking drugs. We had some people that come in

  299. that were recovering drug addicts in our youth group,

  300. young people and you know, they were good witnesses to those

  301. that are we're going through that type thing.

  302. They, I feel like they really helped a lot of people stay away

  303. from that life. But but that was kind of almost

  304. feel like more common or maybe I've just gotten old and I don't

  305. see it as much. But yeah, it's pretty common.

  306. People were messing around and that kind of thing and, and

  307. trying to live that kind of lifestyle.

  308. But I never wanted to and didn't ever try to go that route.

  309. You know, I just thought my daddy would kill me for one.

  310. Didn't want to disappoint him, but just didn't have a desire to

  311. do that. You know, I, I feel like most my

  312. whole life I've wanted to please the Lord, even though I know I

  313. messed up. I've tried to be quick to

  314. repeat, you know, and, and make sure, cuz just like my dad, I

  315. feel like God, you know, it's my father also.

  316. And I don't want to disappoint him, you know, either.

  317. But sure enough, yeah, I was 17 as I was going in L&S to shop

  318. because my mom would send us down there every day to get

  319. groceries. Was there any other grocery

  320. store? No, no, no, there was not.

  321. That was the only one. And when I would go in to shop,

  322. I had noticed there was a nice looking guy, dark hair and blue

  323. eyes. I didn't know his name, but I

  324. thought, you know, he's good looking.

  325. I just, you know, like all teenagers, you know, this is

  326. somebody's cute, right? And so one day, probably for a

  327. few weeks, I'd walk into the store and I'd hear over the

  328. loudspeaker Jason come to the front.

  329. And I thought. I had people working for me.

  330. See you. Might you might share what you

  331. did? Had my had my eyes, my scalps

  332. out. You know, it's like so she come

  333. in. Smart man, don't leave it up to

  334. chance. That's.

  335. Right. Hey, if she comes in, you'll

  336. call me so. So that's awesome, yeah.

  337. Yeah, it was so strange to come in, Jason, come to the front.

  338. So, you know, I was just shopping.

  339. Well, of course, guys, this day I went in, I had been helping my

  340. grandmother with a yard sale and I felt like it looked horrible.

  341. You know, I was in my I've been up at 5:00 AM working this yard

  342. sale and they sent me down there to get baking soda.

  343. I think. I'm not even sure what we were

  344. doing with it. But so I'm shopping and all of a

  345. sudden the cashier comes walking up to me and says, hey, do you

  346. know Jason Brister? I said, no, ma'am, I don't.

  347. And she said, well, he, he thinks you're cute and he wants

  348. to meet you. And I said, well, I don't know

  349. who he is. You know, it's just kind of like

  350. what I was. I was so shocked, I didn't know

  351. what to do, you know? And she said, wait a minute, I'm

  352. just going to go get him. And I was thinking, what?

  353. Not today. Today of all days.

  354. Yeah. And so sure enough, she can walk

  355. him back a few minutes later with Jason by her side.

  356. And I was like, oh, it's a pretty blue eyed guy.

  357. Hey, there you go. Pretty blue eyed.

  358. Guy, that's right. And the rest may be.

  359. History, I don't know if you have a take on that.

  360. No, that's. That was good.

  361. I told her that I would. I was going to wait till she

  362. come up to the front to to talk to her.

  363. And she was like, no, you won't, you won't do it.

  364. So I'm just going to go back there and do it now.

  365. So. So I'm glad she did.

  366. Yeah, I met. She turned out by the time she

  367. got up there, I don't know, but. Got to take a shot and.

  368. So you started kind of going to church with her then, like you

  369. said I did? Yep.

  370. Yep, Probably within the next week or two.

  371. Yeah. After I met her, talked a little

  372. bit, and then, yeah, she had invited me to church

  373. immediately. So I was like, yeah, again.

  374. Yeah, yeah, That's where she wants to go.

  375. Let's go, you know? So, so I went and I'll tell you

  376. the first time I went, it was. I remember coming home.

  377. Like thinking, Oh my gosh, these people are crazy.

  378. What are they doing? I imagine.

  379. Service was a little different than service was a little

  380. different. You know I'm.

  381. Used to, you know, the head nods, the occasional Amiens, you

  382. know, and if you raise your hand, it's because you want

  383. somebody to call on you, you know, it's like like in class or

  384. something. So, so yeah, it was totally

  385. different experience. So, so it took me a while to get

  386. to get used to it cuz we get, I started going to his own Sunday

  387. nights. I still go to my church on

  388. Sunday mornings and I go with her on Sunday nights.

  389. And so it took AI mean it took months to, to kind of get

  390. comfortable and, you know, comfortable with the service

  391. and, and, and the worship and, and that kind of thing because

  392. it was just so different, so opposite from what I was used

  393. to. But, you know, the more the more

  394. I went and the more I was hearing, you know, it was, it

  395. kind of made me start thinking more about the what I was

  396. looking, what I was looking for, the thoughts I was having about

  397. once saved, always saved. You know, is this, that's all

  398. you got to do. You know, I'm saved.

  399. So go do whatever I want to now kind of things which I didn't

  400. didn't believe, but but the more I got, the more I attended with

  401. her, the more I got into it. You know, then I started going

  402. on Sunday mornings and Sunday nights and I kept hearing this.

  403. Acts 2 message, you know, so I'm like, so all right, I got to, I

  404. hear it. I see what everybody's doing.

  405. Let me try to start studying this on my own.

  406. And so I start looking, I'm seeing the gifts of the Spirit

  407. and, and this, these things. And so I, I asked my dad about

  408. it, you know, and he's, you know, has the, well, you know,

  409. it's some people have gifts of that, you know.

  410. Well, it turns out that when he was a child, he actually went to

  411. a Pentecostal church, but he, he prayed for the Holy Ghost, but

  412. never, never received it. And as he grew older, you know,

  413. kind of went towards the, the Baptist faith.

  414. But so he had, he had an understanding of it.

  415. And you knew what I was talking about.

  416. And so the more, you know, I kept going with her, the more I

  417. kept studying. And I know I've told Rachel this

  418. and a few of them. But as I was studying at my

  419. parents house one night, I was in the Acts, I was reading and

  420. it's the only time this has ever happened.

  421. But I promise there was a spirit that come in that bedroom with

  422. me. I was reading and also like the

  423. room got like like so hot, you know, like I mean I just start

  424. like sweating I feel, but you're sweating, but you have chills at

  425. the same time. And it's just like you can tell

  426. there's something there with me. You know, this first time I've

  427. ever experienced that. I'm like 19 years old, maybe 20.

  428. Something like that scared me to death.

  429. So what do I do? Shut my Bible?

  430. Go to sleep, right? You know, try to go to sleep

  431. because I'm like, Oh my gosh, what is this?

  432. So there is no doubt in my mind that night that that was the

  433. devil. He knew I was on to something.

  434. Maybe I was just going to figure something out and he was there

  435. to shut. It down and he.

  436. Did he succeeded that night? But.

  437. Later on. He ended up he lost in the end,

  438. you know, but thank you, Jesus, yes, but yeah, kept.

  439. Going to. Church and like I said, studying

  440. and eventually it's about a year later I think I was having Bible

  441. studies with her family and with brother Mullins, her dad, and he

  442. was showing me some stuff in the Bible and it just it started

  443. making sense or makes sense. So then it's one Sunday night at

  444. the at the old church in Athens. I don't know if y'all know Barry

  445. Tate, if y'all remember him. He he was right there with me

  446. and I give him a lot of credit still to this day.

  447. He hadn't talked to him in a while, but he was right there

  448. with me praying and praying and praying and yeah, finally,

  449. finally had a breakthrough. Got the Holy Ghost that night

  450. and I think it's about a a week later actually, her dad actually

  451. baptized me. Oh, wow, that's awesome at first

  452. church because I think Brother Kraft was out of town or

  453. something. But but yes, that's so that's a

  454. great memory for me, not only getting the Holy Ghost, but then

  455. having her dad be the one to baptize me.

  456. So yeah, that's really cool. Great, great.

  457. Time. Great memory.

  458. So yeah, that is really. Awesome.

  459. I didn't know that at all. Yeah, that's really cool.

  460. That's really cool. When I think of you guys, I

  461. think of family. Honestly, you guys are for one

  462. shining examples of parents. What I try to be everyday and

  463. fail a whole lot because you know, well, my kids are a lot, a

  464. lot worse than yours. That's the difference, you know,

  465. But on on the note of family, you both have had great examples

  466. of parents that have put a lot into your life.

  467. And I think something I'd want to ask you guys is.

  468. That that has. Carried y'all into adulthood

  469. where you are have such a a landmark of faith and an example

  470. of how to parent people then how do you turn around and channel

  471. that into your voice? You know, as you're getting them

  472. to grow up. And that's that's not even just

  473. for our listeners, but for me as can as a as a parent seeking

  474. advice, but you probably. Agree with me that we're sitting

  475. over here thinking, is he talking about us?

  476. Yeah, I don't know. About this great parenting thing

  477. that's like we're just. You know, all you see is your

  478. faults and failures, right? Right.

  479. Yeah, But no, as far as parenting, that is probably the

  480. most difficult thing you'll ever do, in my opinion, but the most

  481. rewarding thing also. Would you agree, Hon?

  482. Yes. Yeah.

  483. I. Think, I mean, yeah, definitely.

  484. There's times when you'll get a question and you don't know the

  485. answer, you don't even know how to answer or to be something so

  486. off the wall that you look at each other and like you do your

  487. eyes, you know, you'll roll your eyes or make some, make some

  488. motion to each other. That's like, OK, this is

  489. something we got to. We'll figure this out, you know,

  490. and, and have to let you know, but.

  491. Yeah, but lots of. Prayer for sure.

  492. And then my dad and mom, when we were kids, they used to pay us

  493. to read the Bible. Oh wow.

  494. I don't know if I've ever shared.

  495. That with you guys. But yeah, Dad and mom thought it

  496. was so important that and we didn't have a lot of money when

  497. I was a kid, so it was very important to them.

  498. But they would pay us. I think it was a penny or $0.10.

  499. It wasn't much at all. For each chapter we read must

  500. have been $0.10. And we had the chart where you

  501. read the Bible through in a year.

  502. And so I actually have an old one that I found back from 1990,

  503. three, 1994. So I had to be, I brought it to

  504. show y'all. I had to be 13 and 14 when I was

  505. doing this bread chart. And so that's something we've

  506. tried to have our boys do as well.

  507. They get up in the morning and of course they have audio now,

  508. but they'll listen along to the Bible course when they couldn't

  509. read. That worked out great too, but

  510. they're both, they're 14 and 10 now, so they can read now, but

  511. they would success. Yeah, don't.

  512. Talk about our Alabama education.

  513. But they do get up and they're reading the Bible through and I

  514. think this might be their maybe even the third year to do that.

  515. So they do that. They both have, you know, some

  516. devotion books that they'll that they'll do on their own.

  517. And we've been trying to do the Bible study.

  518. We're actually in the middle of the Bible study.

  519. Which one is it exploring God's Word?

  520. Exploring God's word that we're going through with.

  521. Them currently, and we don't have a schedule for it.

  522. It's just like, OK, we got some time here.

  523. Let's let's spend a little time on this.

  524. And, you know, they're taking notes and doing things, but I

  525. feel like they also just have a hunger for the Lord.

  526. And I think that's just their prayer that maybe that's been,

  527. you know, something. But and, and I, I would give

  528. credit to pastor and sister Penton and also Lexi and the

  529. other people that have spoken in their life, Seth and others, you

  530. know, as they've grown up, because I know it's not just all

  531. of us for sure, other family members that have spoken in

  532. their lives. But, but I think they really do

  533. have a desire to serve the Lord. They've both been filled with

  534. the Holy Ghost and both of them have been baptized.

  535. And I would say that's the best days of our life, wouldn't you

  536. agree? Yeah.

  537. Yeah. I mean, that's.

  538. The that's that's the reward, you know, that that you were

  539. talking about is knowing that they're both, let's say, walking

  540. in the truth, you know so. And, and you know, we've told

  541. him you're going to mess up, you're going to fail, Try your

  542. best to be quick to repent, because you know, the longer you

  543. stay in that situation, the harder it is to get out.

  544. My sister Mary's, I have to give her a quote.

  545. She always says sin will take you farther than you want to go

  546. and it'll keep you longer than you think it would.

  547. You know, that's her quote. And the boys, they're just the

  548. joy of our, of our life. And we, I tell them on a regular

  549. basis, you know, I just want us to always be close.

  550. I want you guys to know if y'all mess up, you know, come to us,

  551. you know, we'll forgive you and help you work through the

  552. things, but just, you know, encouraging them to pray.

  553. We do pray as a family every day together, some on the way to

  554. school, just I mean, even here tonight we were like y'all pray

  555. for us. We're nervous, but both of them

  556. will just break into prayer. And you know, I forgot to

  557. mention spark. That has been a huge influence

  558. on Jude. Awesome, huge.

  559. I mean he, you know, we'll get up.

  560. He's planning to do a little sermonette, you know, and his

  561. teacher said that Amber and Gabriel said that he asked if he

  562. could, you know, speak. Oh, really?

  563. That's awesome. Yeah, so he wrote.

  564. He wrote a little message all about love and is prepared to

  565. give that to the rest of the Spark kids.

  566. And then Mason also just writes Bible studies.

  567. He and his cousin Liam have a group they call M&L Bible Study.

  568. And it's the most precious thing.

  569. We will be at a family gathering.

  570. I'm talking about Thanksgiving, Christmas.

  571. Whatever anytime we get. Together you'll walk in there

  572. and those two will be up preaching to the other cousins

  573. having. Church.

  574. I love it. They're having church.

  575. They're singing, That's so cool. You know, they're they're.

  576. Actually really worshipping. Yeah, amazing.

  577. And I'm so thankful, like you said, for family.

  578. It's, it's, you can live for the Lord on your own, but wow, isn't

  579. it much easier when you got family and friends that

  580. encourage you and help you live that this life.

  581. It really is. But yes, they're just the best

  582. things that have ever happened to us.

  583. So thankful for them, but it's a lot of failing and repenting.

  584. And we we asked them to forgive us.

  585. I think that's important. Modeling repentance.

  586. Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, when we're

  587. praying together at night, we repent in front of them, you

  588. know, so that they can. You really can't teach.

  589. Humility a different way, right? Unless you're showing it right.

  590. Exactly and. When I messed up with them,

  591. which I do, you know, and lose my temper occasionally.

  592. And I, I will go back and apologize, you know, and say,

  593. you know, maybe you were in the wrong, but I was also in the

  594. wrong in the way that I handled this.

  595. And, you know, I'm sorry. I love you.

  596. My love will never change for you.

  597. But I wish I would have handled it differently.

  598. And let's try to move forward and correct the problem, you

  599. know, without any, you know, anger and things.

  600. But yeah, being a parent is, is, is tough, but so wonderful.

  601. Most definitely. And thank you guys for that

  602. because like even the you, you guys are so intentional with

  603. everything you do. And I mean, it's cool you

  604. saying, oh, we, we failed and asked them for forgiveness and

  605. all. And that's a part of it.

  606. I've, I've learned, especially even with just my boys.

  607. But I think for myself, what I'm going to take from that is the

  608. intentionality that you are putting forward to get involved

  609. with the word of God at the church and then the community of

  610. it. So much so that their family

  611. reunions, preaching and having church, which is awesome, you

  612. know, Oh, Bible quiz. And I will get Bible quiz and.

  613. Shout out to Bible Quiz. And go into just starting.

  614. That. So we're excited about that.

  615. Yeah, yeah. Goodness, I think.

  616. That's one of the best things that that you can do for your

  617. kid. So I'll ask you.

  618. So you received the Holy Ghost and got baptized and yeah after

  619. that how long was it you thinking to like y'all got

  620. married I guess after that so. That was that was in 19 August

  621. of 99 when I got the Holy Ghost, and then it was three years

  622. later, August of 2002, when we got married also.

  623. Yeah, from start to finish. We kind of date met and dated

  624. for about four years before we got married.

  625. We were both in college and so we were trying to finish that up

  626. before we got married. Even though we ended up getting

  627. married. You had one semester left, one

  628. semester left. Of of school, yeah.

  629. And I will. Say that I had been taught all

  630. my life not to marry someone that doesn't believe you know,

  631. not to be unequally yoked together.

  632. And I do think that's important. I would encourage all of our

  633. young people to find someone that, you know, believes like

  634. you. With that said, it's so strange.

  635. When I met Jason, I instantly thought something is different

  636. about this guy, you know, And I truly think it was just a love

  637. for for God. He really had a love for God.

  638. And, and he was like you said, not certain that he had the

  639. fullness, you know, in his life already because he, he said he

  640. felt like he was, you know, looking for something else.

  641. And maybe, maybe I could just tell that, but I kept kind of

  642. arguing with myself like, well, Lord, I really feel something

  643. for this guy. But I know I might not should,

  644. because we're not exactly believing the same, you know,

  645. and, but I think I, we were in the minority, not the majority.

  646. You know, you have to be careful.

  647. I, I even tell our boys right now that whoever you marry,

  648. that's going to be one of the most important decisions besides

  649. coming to the Lord and deciding to serve the Lord.

  650. But who you marry is going to be your next important decision.

  651. It's going to shape everything in your life, certainly.

  652. But it was. It was his character, right?

  653. Though the fact that you you could tell he was actively

  654. seeking the Lord, that makes a difference and in the decision

  655. you made at the time, right? Because we can all.

  656. We can all tell. I mean, everybody's.

  657. The eyes never really give it away whenever someone's not

  658. really paying attention, you know what I mean?

  659. Like people can fake actions, but they can't fake or like a

  660. love for Jesus, you know what I mean?

  661. That is very true. Kim and and I think we had

  662. conversations. Do you remember this?

  663. I remember a conversation saying, well, you know, we can

  664. date and everything, but I'm not gonna marry somebody that

  665. doesn't have the Holy Ghost, right?

  666. Yeah, I. Remember that you had you.

  667. Had a plan laid out. Yeah, she already had it.

  668. So she was intentional. She was intentional.

  669. Way back then, it's not just what the kids you know, but so

  670. but. As you guys, when did you guys

  671. decide, hey, I don't want to just be though like a like AI

  672. don't want to just do nothing though, You know what I mean?

  673. I don't want to I don't want to be here and not like be a part

  674. of what's going on. I know that led to like Sunday

  675. school environment, like First off, after you guys got married,

  676. right? So yeah, I actually started.

  677. Teaching Sunday school when I was 15.

  678. Yeah. So it was Gwen Craft.

  679. You guys know Robin and Gwen Craft?

  680. She was such a blessing to me. And she's like, hey, I think you

  681. could teach Sunday. So I think you would be a good

  682. Sunday school teacher. And she got me in there and

  683. pretty much mentored me, kind of showed me what to do and

  684. everything. And then eventually let me take

  685. over. And I'm still teaching Sunday

  686. school to this day. You know, so that's been what,

  687. nearly 430 years, something like that.

  688. And I, you know, I love children and just, I'm thankful to be

  689. able to help in that vicinity. So yeah, we, we want to help

  690. where we can. And we've been through different

  691. stages and different chapters of our lives and things like that.

  692. You know, Jason helps out with the media a lot, and I feel like

  693. he's talented in that area. Yeah.

  694. So I remember when, yeah, when I first started going to church

  695. with her, she was, she was teaching Sunday school.

  696. And then there eventually after I I got the Holy Ghost and was

  697. there for a while. This at Athens.

  698. I think I actually was was helping you.

  699. We started together. Started teaching.

  700. Started. Teaching together.

  701. And. Then yeah, so that.

  702. Was so it was big. And then I guess after we moved

  703. here, we were after a little while, we got involved with

  704. children's church and LED that for a little while here.

  705. Yeah, I think it. Worked out good.

  706. I was like, serious trying to pound in the truth and Jason's

  707. over here cracking jokes. That's.

  708. Right. But he helped me loosen up a

  709. little bit, you know, And today, yeah, we need to have fun with

  710. this, too. But yeah, we made a good team.

  711. And I feel like we still make a good team in most avenues that

  712. we go in. I we kind of touched on it a

  713. little bit, but what is it like whenever you what is it?

  714. What does it kind of go through whenever you see people you've

  715. kind of poured a portion of your life into at least and you see

  716. them grow up and them dedicate their lives to God.

  717. What is that feeling like for for each of you?

  718. You know what I mean? Even for brother Jason may not

  719. do Sunday school anymore, but to know you made an impact on

  720. certain people's lives and to see that is that do you consider

  721. that like a a rewarding experience?

  722. I guess yeah, it I mean. It's definitely rewarding, you

  723. know, I mean, you, you see it and it's like, oh, you're so

  724. proud of them. And it's like, OK, yeah, I did

  725. help way back with maybe I taught them in Sunday school or,

  726. or, or had some influence on them at some point, you know,

  727. but but more it's just just proud for them, you know, not

  728. not a good job to me. I helped mold this person or

  729. hopefully said something that helped them in their, in their

  730. life. But you know, whoever it was

  731. that helped them, you know, it's, it's yes, it's definitely

  732. for sure. You know, there's lots of hands.

  733. That that helped helped with that for sure.

  734. And that's like we said, so thankful for our kids as well.

  735. All those people pouring into US.

  736. I mean, there's so many people that pour into our children and

  737. I guess we're just grateful and thankful to have an opportunity

  738. to pour into some people. But we still he and I both just

  739. like you don't you feel like you don't do enough.

  740. You feel like I don't think I really made a difference.

  741. You know, somebody makes a comment.

  742. Brooke said something the other day, but boasting about

  743. remembering me as her teacher. And I was like, oh, she did.

  744. I I mean, I, I can't believe she even remembered me, you know?

  745. So maybe we have more influence on people than we realize, but

  746. it doesn't feel like you do sometimes, you know?

  747. Well, you know, I think. And I think some people hold

  748. themselves out of being involved and hold themselves out for me

  749. from being apart because they get too worried about how much

  750. it will take out of them or even just like, even even that

  751. they're not worthy. But you guys can say

  752. unintentionally, just by just by being, you know, by loving God,

  753. by being there, being an example, you can have, you know,

  754. consequences that you didn't even realize you were having.

  755. Is that accurate? Oh yeah.

  756. And you know, that can go both ways.

  757. You know, as a Christian, some people expect you to be perfect

  758. and never make any mistakes. But we're all human folks,

  759. right? But I really do I will get upset

  760. emotional if I get to thinking about, oh, you were not on your

  761. best that day. I wonder who you affect.

  762. You know, if who who that you touch negatively and you just

  763. have to say, God, please forgive me and please help me to move

  764. forward. Please help those people forget

  765. the way I acted or what I said or something like that.

  766. Because, yeah, you can't expect to be perfect.

  767. Jesus was the only perfect, you know, person.

  768. But we got to strive to try to, you know, manifest the fruits of

  769. the Spirit. Like, like, he's his example.

  770. But wow, yeah. I can't dwell on my failures too

  771. much. Gosh, but.

  772. Even so, you would encourage somebody to get involved with

  773. Sunday school or be involved in that?

  774. It's a rewarding experience for that, wouldn't you say?

  775. Oh yes, one. 100% yes, I I get sidetracked when you ask me a

  776. question. Sorry about that.

  777. But yes, most definitely when you say, you know, like you guys

  778. and just all the different ones that that you saw as kids living

  779. for the Lord, it's the best it's one of the best feelings.

  780. You know, like I told you, my children are my whole world.

  781. So. But I feel like the kids in

  782. Sunday school are your children, you know, like maybe your nieces

  783. and nephews or something. No, you do have a love for them

  784. and just a genuine, just happiness to see them serving

  785. the Lord for sure. Yeah.

  786. And I think. You know, you can get involved

  787. in so many ways. I know one thing your dad always

  788. says is everyone's a minister. So it's not just the ones that

  789. are up on on stage preaching or singing or leading, you know,

  790. it's Sunday school. It's, you know, who's cleaning

  791. the church this week. I mean, there's so many ways to

  792. be involved that again, you're just you're doing it, you know,

  793. as a ministry that you can help out in.

  794. But again, who's watching you again, that you don't even

  795. realize that notice that. Oh yeah, they were up for doing

  796. this. They didn't have to be doing

  797. that. So I mean, and that's for

  798. everybody, you know, they again, not just not just some about us,

  799. I mean, it's there's so many ways you can be involved.

  800. You know you don't have to be the one in upfront beating, you

  801. know so and you. Do get a feeling once you've

  802. done something for the Lord, whether it's like cleaning the

  803. church or teaching Sunday school, any of that, like I

  804. think the Lord confirms that, you know, thank you, my child.

  805. Or or you know, like you do feel a sense of words like we all

  806. need purpose in our lives or we're just floating around like

  807. what am I here for kind of thing.

  808. And that's something we try to tell our boys to your purpose

  809. here, you know, in this life is to love God, to serve God, to

  810. try to help others get to heaven.

  811. That's your main purpose and the other things that you're going

  812. to do that's going to fill your earthly time.

  813. But you know, this, the main purpose is you get into heaven

  814. and trying to help someone else get to heaven.

  815. And so we're trying to instill in them the purpose, 'cause I

  816. think a lot of kids and, and even adults sometimes don't know

  817. their purpose. Why are we here?

  818. You know, that's a very good point.

  819. So you guys, you guys moved from Athens over there.

  820. It was at the time especially a considerably larger church than

  821. than than we were at the time whenever you moved in.

  822. Well, you say 07080708. Yeah, I mean, it was.

  823. A very It was Castle Dr., Yeah. Castle Dr. it was.

  824. A very small congregation, I don't know what, 30s, maybe

  825. somewhere in there, 40. I'll tell you when.

  826. The whole family, it was pretty almost doubled, doubled the

  827. attendance movie. I don't know, it was very small

  828. at the time, but yes, that was a great.

  829. Time over there, I love having a large church, but the small

  830. church was was so nice. We were all so closely knit

  831. together. There's nothing like it, you

  832. know, Bible studies, you know, just hanging out at one

  833. another's houses and things. And you want to expand for sure.

  834. And so it's so thankful to see the church grow like it has

  835. grown and developed new relationships and things.

  836. It's been wonderful to be a part of.

  837. Absolutely. So from your perspective, from

  838. both of your perspective, you know what, I guess especially

  839. that time because you know, you can't really depend on other

  840. people to kind of do the work whenever there's only a few

  841. people, it really is the you guys know that well.

  842. The community, but. You know what I'm saying?

  843. Like whenever, whenever, especially in a smaller church.

  844. So you can't really hideaway, you know what I mean in that

  845. way. But what kind of, I guess just

  846. what, what kind of encouragement would would you give to people

  847. to that that, that your involvement matters and that

  848. that kind of thing, especially from your experience from Castle

  849. Drive over, you know what I mean?

  850. Well, like we said, the blessing, when you get involved,

  851. you're going to feel it. You know the Lord is going to

  852. confirm to you that yes, you did the right thing by being

  853. involved. So I would encourage everyone to

  854. find some, you know some part what cleaning the church or just

  855. teaching Sunday school. Any of that is going to be very

  856. rewarding. The Lord's going to bless you

  857. for it. I truly believe that.

  858. I know he has us over over the years.

  859. Would you add anything to that as far as encouraging others?

  860. No, I think you're. I think you're exactly right.

  861. Just yeah, find find your niche, find your space.

  862. Where, you know, where something's needed, you know,

  863. and and, you know, go to pasture, you know, pastors, I

  864. mean, pastors opened ideas and looking looking for for those

  865. ministers that he talks about. So.

  866. So yeah, I think yeah, definitely just.

  867. Yeah. Like, like Rachel said, just get

  868. involved. And I mean, yeah, it can be you

  869. won't regret it. I mean, it can be nervous and

  870. can be trying at times, you know, if but God's always there,

  871. he's always with you and he will reward you for for your efforts.

  872. So absolutely. And that's, I mean, just that,

  873. just that model of faithfulness, this is, is something we've kind

  874. of highlight. And that's not me trying to just

  875. because you guys are on here with us, but you know, your

  876. faithfulness has has grown inside of the church.

  877. Every the church is a collective whole that we all grow together.

  878. And so especially early on, each of your handprints are on that.

  879. And obviously Brother Mullins as well, and, and the many people

  880. who are who, who, who kind of got together to, to, to, to work

  881. in the church together. It's, it's it's impressive to

  882. see how God uses us all together.

  883. Yeah. And you?

  884. Know you talked about that the impact we leave on people and

  885. everything and I-11 thing I wanted to share.

  886. I know when we first moved here money was pretty tight too.

  887. Dad always made sure you know we didn't notice too much and he

  888. did a good job of that. Made us excited about Wendy's

  889. like you mentioned the other day dads are good at.

  890. That they are. They are.

  891. And and he did a really good job of that, him and mom both of

  892. putting things in the right perspective.

  893. But I remember something that's even to this day touched my life

  894. about your dad specifically. It was Christmas, I think O 5

  895. and we were going to Athens at the time and dad really didn't

  896. have money for nothing. OK And Christmas is coming up

  897. and everything. And we talked and brother

  898. Mullins, I remember him coming up to us and was like hey boys,

  899. what do y'all want for Christmas, you know, and all

  900. this we was telling them whatever you know, oh we want

  901. power Ranger, we will rescue here.

  902. And then we said we want bikes and all.

  903. And Long story short, because I could, I could wax on it there,

  904. but we ended up getting bikes for Christmas.

  905. OK, that was awesome. Got a little Mongoose bike with

  906. the pegs and all. I was so great, loved it.

  907. And I was like, Santa's real, you know, because this wasn't,

  908. this wasn't supposed to be happening.

  909. And then several years later after you guys had had started

  910. coming to the church and everything, Dad had shared to me

  911. how much that touched him because they really didn't have

  912. money going then. And it was brother Mullins who

  913. he just gave him money and was like, hey, go buy those boys

  914. bikes and shoot. I rode on that joker for at

  915. least 567 arms on that thing. Yeah.

  916. Broken arm on it. Life lessons, you know?

  917. Well, I. Appreciate you sharing that.

  918. Dad, I feel like was very generous, but we usually didn't

  919. know about it because he tried to be Incognito and, you know,

  920. we might find out somehow, you know, through a slip of tongue.

  921. But he really wanted to bless people.

  922. The Lord had blessed him, but he was in that same position not

  923. many years before. Just like y'all.

  924. He said he couldn't buy. He didn't have enough money to

  925. buy a gallon of milk and he had six kids.

  926. Well, 5:00 at the time, I guess when he was telling this story

  927. and he said a man came up to him and gave him money and enough to

  928. go get some groceries. And I think when you experience

  929. that, you want to pay that forward, you know, And so I

  930. think that's what he tried to do and he was just naturally

  931. generous and and it really kind hearted man.

  932. So thank you for hearing that. And then you.

  933. See it with you guys. I'm sorry, interrupting you

  934. there, but that humility, like, you know, Bible says, don't let

  935. your, your left hand know what your right hand is doing and

  936. all, and it's not to broadcast anything.

  937. And you guys are similar. Like you've talked yourself down

  938. so much about like, oh, you don't think you leave an impact

  939. on people, but you do. And, and a lot of it, I think,

  940. is through showing the fruit of the spirit the way you guys do.

  941. We love that. I love it so much.

  942. And again, like with the parents, the parenting, you guys

  943. are people I generally look up to on the daily.

  944. I'm like, what would Jason and Rachel do?

  945. And yelling at the kids or smacking them in the face is

  946. probably not it. And so that, that saved my

  947. children a lot of times, But I, I love that about you guys.

  948. You display the fruit of the spirit all the time.

  949. You guys are meek, patient, kind.

  950. And I, I'm not, I'm loud and I'm not just a lot of times, but I

  951. try to be that more and more. And I, I, it, it can't be

  952. overstated the, the lives you touch when you don't even know

  953. it, you know, just by walking a Christian life.

  954. And so for one, thank you guys. I, I appreciate that and keep up

  955. the good work. You know, that's what I was

  956. thinking of. Gosh, I've got to step up my

  957. game. I know it's like you put

  958. pressure. On us now it's like, yeah.

  959. So exactly. I.

  960. Really appreciate those kind more words more than you say

  961. don't feel like they're deserved, but we sure appreciate

  962. it yeah, I mean the. Generosity, like Kobe was

  963. talking, the generosity of men like like your father and also

  964. my uncle Eric really made an impact of my life.

  965. Just the amount of times that that that they would show show

  966. God that way. It really it's inspirational.

  967. Honestly, that's like, I want to change my outlook on life

  968. because if they were able to, to, to do those things and God

  969. was still able to use them, that, that, that it'll change

  970. your whole perspective. And so like, and, and so these

  971. stories, I mean, in a lot of ways, these stories need to be

  972. told though, you know what I mean?

  973. And that's not to that's not to boast anybody up, but to show

  974. people that you can be transformational evil, even

  975. living a life that people may not see from the pulpit.

  976. You know what I mean? Yes, I agree.

  977. And and talking about stories that need to be told, there was

  978. one thing I was thinking that I definitely wanted to share.

  979. So is this a good time to share it?

  980. Yeah. Great time.

  981. So I, when I was about, I don't even actually know what age I

  982. was, but I would guess to be around, you know, 12 or so.

  983. And it was just a testimony of God's healing power.

  984. So all my life, you know, grow grown up.

  985. God can heal and work miracles and things like that.

  986. And I didn't see a ton of that. I heard a bunch of people

  987. testify when they come to church and everything.

  988. And I've always thought, yeah, I want to experience a miracle,

  989. Lord, you know. And so anyway, this was just a

  990. mundane, regular day at home. We were all getting ready to eat

  991. supper. Everybody, most everybody was

  992. sitting at the table. I was finishing up the last few

  993. minutes. Mom had us helping in the

  994. kitchen when we were a little bitty.

  995. I was on a stool making biscuits probably at 8 years old, which

  996. is a good thing. But this particular day I was, I

  997. just swapped my hand across the stove to to get some crumbs or

  998. something off and just burnt my hand and I was hurting so bad

  999. and was crying. I go over to the sink and my

1000. family didn't even know it. They were sitting down like I

1001. said doing their own thing and I was running water on it And I

1002. was like, God, you know, I just said a very simple prayer.

  1003. I was like, Lord, I know you're a healer.

1004. My hand is hurting so bad. I know you could heal me right

1005. now. God, don't ask you to heal me.

1006. I want you to know my hand stopped hurting instantly.

1007. Thank you Jesus, that's. Awesome.

1008. Oh, and I. Told God, I said, if you heal

1009. me, I'm going to go stand up in that chair at the dining room

1010. table and I'm going to tell everybody.

1011. And my brother was there. He wasn't serving the Lord, you

1012. know, either. And when it happened, I said,

1013. well, OK Lord, I guess I got to follow up, you know, and I'm not

1014. one like this is like the only time something like that

1015. happened to me. But I did, I went over and got

1016. up on the chair. I said, can I interrupt y'all

1017. for a minute? And tears coming down my face.

1018. I said I just burnt my hand. I said, see, it's still white

1019. and it was hurting. I was crying, I said, and I

1020. asked God to heal me and he healed me instantly.

1021. And, you know, my brother's face was like, what?

1022. And yeah, everybody then they started rejoicing with me and

1023. everything. But, you know, that seems so

1024. simple that you maybe start doubting what was it really

  1025. burnt? I know without a shadow of a

1026. doubt it was. And so that made me a true

1027. believer in, in God's healing power and miracles that can be

1028. done. Even though it was just a small,

1029. you know, a small thing, it meant a lot to me.

1030. And I think God did that to help increase my faith maybe, and

1031. just to show me his power and everything.

1032. And, you know, I know people don't get healed when we pray

1033. and you know, that's a whole different, you know, story for a

1034. different day. But we still, my thought is just

1035. to cling to the Lord. His ways are not our ways.

1036. You know, this is our earthly home.

1037. We're just traveling through, you know, and we're we just

1038. we're make trying to make it to heaven.

1039. And the things that happened here, like his ways are not our

1040. ways. And so I just trust him and

1041. believe in him, you know, that he's got our best interests at

  1042. heart, you know? Absolutely.

1043. Oh, I was going to say, obviously you 2, both are, are

1044. are examples of how God can bless your life, obviously, and

1045. how God can sustain you. But we all, no matter what, go

1046. through difficult times in our life.

1047. Like all of us are guaranteed at some point to face

1048. disappointment, to face the circumstance where we really

1049. feel tried. And as it kind of alluded to

1050. earlier, I don't know how people make it through without knowing,

1051. having the dependability of God or knowing that he's president

1052. in a real way. Has there been a time in your

1053. lives where you really felt like you needed God in some way and

1054. you felt like he came through for you?

1055. Yeah. Yeah, I can go.

1056. First, I think the hardest time in my life was the loss of my

1057. dad, which that's been 1213 years ago now.

1058. And I don't know, he's to me didn't have the beliefs, same

1059. beliefs that I did. But still, it was just the

1060. greatest man that I knew and he was wonderful.

  1061. Yeah. I know.

1062. And he supported you. Even after you he supported.

1063. Me that was something I was scared, scared to even mention

1064. it to him. You know, my mom and dad just

1065. just, you know, here they are preaching one thing and one of

1066. their sons over here doing something different, you know,

1067. but but yes, he, both of them 100% supported me and, you know,

1068. couldn't have asked for anything better from them.

1069. But yeah, that was very, very trying time, you know, just the

1070. questions of of why, you know, how can this, how can you take

1071. him, you know? And so, yeah, that was very,

1072. very difficult time. Definitely had to lean on God a

1073. lot during that time. You know, luckily I had a

1074. amazing wife here with me in a time Mason was about 1.

1075. So that that helped as well. You know, that to have to have

1076. them that I could could lean on and talk to you.

1077. But yeah, we both. Agreed that having a baby helped

1078. us through that time because children bring joy regardless of

1079. what's going on in your life. You know, they're just a source

1080. of joy. And so he really.

1081. Mason was about one when your dad passed.

1082. And I think it would have been a lot harder if we didn't have

  1083. any. Right?

1084. Yeah, for your mom too, because she loved on the grandbaby.

1085. I think it helped her get through it too.

1086. Yeah, right. So yeah, he his.

1087. Dad was a wonderful, wonderful man.

1088. He was one that was at the nursing home multiple times a

1089. week, you know, bringing joy, singing, bringing joy to those

1090. elderly people. They love for him to come.

1091. He was at the hospital all the time.

1092. This was once he became a full time pastor, You know, he spent

1093. his time doing things like that. And I respected and admired him

1094. greatly. And I heard him preach many

1095. times, too. And he was a really good

  1096. preacher, too. Yeah.

1097. We love and miss him. We're thankful to have still

1098. have your mom. She's the only one living of the

1099. of our parents currently. So I would agree that that was

1100. the hardest time that I've been through one of them.

  1101. I'll back up just a little bit. I had a a youth member, a friend

1102. that committed suicide back when we were kids, probably at like

1103. 15. And that was hard, you know, and

1104. now he was, he had kind of, you know, he was kind of sometimes

1105. in and out, we caught backsliding and coming in, you

1106. know, but but he knew, you know, he knew the Lord and everything

1107. and we didn't know why he he chose to do that.

1108. Like many people that have, you know, struggled with some with

1109. those issues, but that was very difficult.

1110. I remember laying in the bed thinking, I can't get up and go

1111. to church. It happened like on a Saturday

1112. night and they had pastor and everyone he called and told the

1113. youth group, you know, and my dad, I remember coming up there

1114. and praying with me and saying it's going to be best to go to

1115. church because I said, I don't want to go to church.

1116. I just want to stay home. And I was so upset at the time.

1117. But of course he was wise and he knew that being in the House of

1118. God would help you more than anything.

1119. That was a difficult time for myself and our whole youth group

1120. to overcome, But the Lord helped us through that and the the

1121. people in the church helped us through that as well.

1122. And then, you know, other difficult times.

1123. I had people that I knew involved in drugs and things

1124. that really wrecked their lives and some around and and many

1125. times like you, like you said, Jason, you just think, why is

1126. this happening? Lord, you know, come and swoop

1127. down and just make it all right. But you know, he gives us he

1128. gives us a choice. You know, we all have to choose

1129. good or evil and and so that was a very difficult time, but God

1130. did help me to get through that. I just continued to pray for

1131. them, you know, and many of them have have changed and come to

1132. the Lord. There's still some that are not,

1133. but you know, I'm just going to continue praying for them that

1134. they will come back eventually. But then lastly is the three

1135. things that stood out to me were that the suicide and the drugs

1136. and things I saw the youth involved in and some family and

1137. then my parents passing away, which was both in 2021 and one

1138. in May. Dad passed in May, May 8th of

1139. 2021 and then mom six months later, November 15th of 2021.

1140. And you just don't know like what it's like till you know

1141. what it's like not to have your parent, you know, specifically

1142. remembering nobody will love me like my parents, you know?

1143. And so, but God did reveal to me during that time that I'm your

1144. father and I love you more than your dad.

1145. And that was the one thing that I came away with was God's love

1146. for me. I just felt like he wrapped me

1147. up in his arms and just helped me through that time.

1148. It wasn't a fast time. I mean, probably two or three

1149. years. You say I'm getting emotional

1150. now, but before I can even talk about them without just, you

1151. know, losing it. And I still miss them so much.

1152. Like he misses his dad to this day.

1153. We miss him so much. They were just such a everyday

1154. presence in our lives, you know, but so thankful for the grace of

1155. God and so thankful for His love and His comfort and His word

1156. that comforts us. Really, that was the only thing,

  1157. I don't think. I don't know how I would have

1158. made it through without him. So yeah, he's definitely a help

1159. and so kind of a. Common theme between you though,

1160. what, what kind of I guess encouragement would you give to

1161. those maybe who are facing grief in their life?

1162. You know what I mean? That you can turn to that maybe

1163. there's, there's an uplifting moment for you that you guys can

1164. speak to and say God can be there for you and take you out

1165. of grief. You know what I mean?

1166. Personal experience really speaks volumes, doesn't it?

  1167. Yes. Yeah.

1168. It does. And I think, you know, once

1169. you're there in that moment, you know, when it seems like all

1170. hope is lost, you know, it's like, here's the greatest man

1171. ever knew and now he's gone, you know.

1172. But like she said, there's somebody there that loves you

1173. even more than that person did, which is maybe hard to believe,

1174. but but it is true. And, you know, you've got to

1175. lean on him. You've got to pray to him, talk

1176. to him, seek him out, you know, seek his, his wisdom, his

1177. guidance because, you know, we don't know why these things

1178. happen. You know, that bad things happen

1179. to good people, you know, all the time.

1180. And I don't know, without, without having him there to, to

1181. reach out to and to lean on. Yeah.

1182. I'm not sure how. How you can make it?

1183. Through I think I think you've got to you've got to have that

1184. belief and that faith so yeah, I agree I.

1185. Remember apologizing to you. Of course I grieved when his dad

  1186. passed. I loved him.

1187. He was so good to me. But then when my parents passed,

  1188. I said, honey, I don't. I didn't realize how bad it

1189. hurt, and I'm sorry that I didn't realize at the time when

1190. your dad passed what you must have been going through.

1191. You know, I do remember apologizing to him because that

1192. empathy is a little different than sympathy, right?

1193. And so I guess maybe every experience in our lives, I feel

1194. like God can let us, can use us to help someone.

1195. Like we did have a miscarriage back when we were trying to get

1196. pregnant with Mason and the Lord helped us through that.

1197. I guess I should have added that to my list of of things that was

1198. very difficult. It was early on in the pregnancy

1199. though. But I know that sister Penton

1200. had me talk to a couple ladies that had a miscarriage and I

1201. could just share how God helped me through that time.

1202. You know, I don't understand God, but I'm trusting you, you

1203. know, that kind of faith and and leaning on him.

1204. So I definitely think the trials we go through can be used to

1205. help others. So someone that else that loses

1206. a parent, you know, if they want to talk to me, I can share how

1207. the Lord help to me. But you know, even saying it

1208. here on this podcast, he will help you through and there's

1209. nowhere else you can go for this kind of help.

  1210. It's a different kind of help. That's that's the.

1211. Beauty of of God and also his congregation, right?

1212. Because it's not just him who helps, but he puts his spirit

1213. inside of us so that we can go be those people that help for

  1214. sure. So.

1215. Yeah, and your parents? You know, our pastors are just

1216. so loving and kind. You know, they have been a huge

1217. help too, in helping you get through difficult times.

1218. I told your dad one time, I said, you're just so kind.

1219. And he kind of was like trying to say, no, you know, that's not

1220. my personality. You know, I'm, I'm green and I,

1221. I have to work at being that way.

1222. And I said, well, you got me food because I think you're,

1223. you're pretty awesome. You know, so is your wife, but

1224. we sure do appreciate the influence that they've had on us

1225. and and all the others in the congregation.

  1226. We've got a wonderful congregation of people that's

1227. ready to help in a time of need. You know, so thankful for that

1228. support. We do and that that.

1229. Matters a whole lot, that is. It's funny because grief's a lot

1230. of what sent me away from God at 1st and then grief is

1231. ultimately, I think what brought me back, you know, and it, it's,

1232. it's good having that community, people that believe and trust in

1233. God. And like you said, the hardest

1234. part of it and navigate and I think is that faith in his will,

1235. you know, because if we have it our way, nobody's going to die.

1236. You know, we're nobody's going to get sick.

1237. We're we ain't going to have issues And, and I think through

1238. all of life, things happen for a reason.

1239. And I can see in my life where negative things have happened

1240. that from the outside, it's, it's bad, but then what it's

1241. it's transformed into my life and a lot of people in my

1242. family, their life, there's always a purpose to it.

1243. And I think that trust, trust in his will, that's that's a vital

1244. part of that. And then also coming back to

1245. the, the fold for us, like y'all said with the community, we

1246. really do have a good community here and I'm grateful to be a

1247. part. And for me with the boys, I, I

1248. really want them growing up in an area like that where your

1249. boys are huge role models to my boys because they're around the

1250. same age and everything, you know, that's why we're taking

1251. y'all on as role models for us. We're like, well, they're doing

1252. OK. And then my kids want to be like

1253. them, so got to figure out, feel the weight of that pressure.

1254. On me, you know Exactly. Yeah.

  1255. So. Don't mess up, definitely don't

1256. go by body else man come. On don't go by.

1257. Mason, a sports car nothing when he's 16 OK then my boys are

1258. going to be like all right, dad, you saw what Jason did well, we.

1259. Know like you. Said God's plans don't stop

1260. here, and that's life and life more abundantly, right?

1261. So we're reunited with him and we're reunited together.

1262. It's it's all going to be worth it one day.

1263. That's right. No day of rejoicing.

1264. That's right. So thank, thank you guys so much

1265. for sharing with us and and sharing on this podcast.

1266. Just it's everybody's story needs to be told because God has

1267. dealt with us all in unique ways.

1268. So thank you guys for being willing to be an open with us.

1269. All right, all right. Well, we are.

  1270. Honored. Yeah.

  1271. Thank. Thank you.

1272. For asking us and also just props to all of y'all Johnny

1273. too, just for putting this together because capturing these

1274. stories from I mean, not just us, but you know, from from Pop

1275. and Mac and Seth and your dad and Brian brother Lacombe.

1276. I mean, it's it's awesome to this is all all.

1277. Johnny, he's not here, so we can we can talk him up.

1278. This is all Johnny. Good job, Johnny, you're doing.

1279. Johnny. And Cameron, they're the ones

1280. that orchestrated this. And then they asked me to come

1281. on because I, I talk more than them.

1282. So that's, that's really it on the involvement side.

1283. But honestly, they I love it. I wanted to be a part because it

1284. did sound like such a great idea.

1285. And I think it can grow our community.

1286. And then hopefully those stories can go out even to further

1287. places And some what is what is the word of the Lord say we're

1288. saved by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony.

1289. And I think sharing this testimony and being vulnerable

1290. even because a lot of times, like when we're talking to

1291. people, sometimes we'll put that guard up and a lot of people

1292. ain't going to get on a mic and then be to share intimate

1293. details about their life and where God's brought them.

1294. And I think that's important and something good can come from it.

1295. So thank you guys for, for one, being vulnerable and being open

1296. with us that that that means a lot.

1297. And hopefully that goes out and touches some lives.

1298. Well, it's always important. For us to remember what God's

1299. done for us. And sometimes if I don't go back

1300. and re examine it, I'll forget to be honest with you.

1301. You know what I mean? And that's you see that

1302. throughout the Bible where people just forget how good he

1303. actually has been every step of the way.

1304. And now, so it's important for other people to see how good

1305. he's been to you because they know that they can rest in his

1306. hand. So yes, testimonies are.

1307. Important. And thank you both.

1308. Once again, we appreciate you. Thank you.
