  1. welcome to shifting perspectives

  2. biblical conversations about topics that

  3. matter let's get to

  4. [Music]

  5. it well hey everybody welcome back and

  6. you know last week we had a little bit

  7. of fun with singing and I probably ribed

  8. you a little bit on that that's that's

  9. quite all right I I've I've taken a lot

  10. of that over my singing over the years

  11. so it's okay yeah that's what we talked

  12. about last week and this week we get to

  13. talk about prayer and I know I know that

  14. that's a subject that I think for both

  15. of us is very dear to our heart yes um

  16. the one of I think probably the most

  17. understated tool that we have in our

  18. tool belt as Christians is the power of

  19. prayer that we really don't understand

  20. what that does absolutely and so as it's

  21. related to the conversation that we're

  22. having we're talking about spiritual

  23. growth and so you know spiritual growth

  24. implies that there is an increase to

  25. something and I know I know often times

  26. um you know people will say well you

  27. know I don't know how to pray or it just

  28. feels awkward it's just you know it's

  29. it's it's it's difficult for me and so

  30. so prayer becomes a topic that

  31. oftentimes if you ask people they just

  32. don't do and they're missing out they're

  33. missing out and I mean the Bible and

  34. we're going to talk about a little bit

  35. but the Bible gives us so many examples

  36. of prayer the power of prayer how to

  37. pray um but even though those examples

  38. are there it's it's the just like a

  39. child trying to learn to have a

  40. conversation with their f with its

  41. father you take a three or four year old

  42. I mean that is our relationship to God

  43. is he is so much greater than we are our

  44. communication doesn't have to be perfect

  45. with God we don't have to say all the

  46. flamboyant

  47. Perfect by man standard prayer sometimes

  48. I think the most effective prayers I had

  49. were one whenever I was either so

  50. heartbroken or or impacted in some way

  51. that I could barely utter words and God

  52. just knows I mean you feel that presence

  53. U so what I'm trying to say is we can't

  54. put restrictions on it God's not judging

  55. us okay well I'll answer you because you

  56. prayed better it's all about condition

  57. of the heart and relationship to the

  58. father that's right you know and there's

  59. there's several stories in the Bible

  60. that that equate that um you know one of

  61. those that that we that we often talk

  62. about is is found in um I want to say

  63. it's Luke chapter 18 but it just popped

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  64. into my head so I might be wrong but um

  65. in that particular story it's either

  66. Luke 18 or it's Luke 11 I don't remember

  67. which but but in one of those um there's

  68. a story of the the the Pharisee that

  69. stands up in front of everybody and he's

  70. praying this eloquent prayer and he says

  71. I thank God that I'm more spiritual than

  72. than this sinner this tax collector

  73. that's over here and the tax collector

  74. sitting over there and that's all he's

  75. got that's all he's got all he's got is

  76. a Lord have mercy on me a

  77. sinner and that's where God begins to

  78. meet us yes in those simple

  79. places of I don't really have great

  80. words but I know you're the only answer

  81. that I have and that is and that is

  82. where faith and prayer meet whenever we

  83. can get that understanding of being

  84. humble recognizing the god that we're

  85. praying to and his role and then where

  86. we are at in that role and then lifting

  87. up our deepest most heartbreaking

  88. desires to him or on the flip side of it

  89. because prayer is not just about

  90. heartbreak prayer is also about the

  91. thankfulness that's right you know

  92. praying before a meal um you know do we

  93. say the prayer because it's what we've

  94. always done or do we say the prayer

  95. really thanking God knowing you know

  96. what I've got something that some people

  97. don't have and that's a meal to eat in

  98. front of me yeah and we and especially

  99. in America we take that for granted we

  100. really do we we really do and you know

  101. that that kind of ties into um you know

  102. this passage of scripture that's in uh 1

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  103. Thessalonians chapter 5 most most of us

  104. you know we kind of know it um but in 1

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  105. Thessalonians chapter 5 uh vers verse 16

  106. 17 and 18 essentially says this it says

  107. Rejoice

  108. always well you know that's hard that's

  109. hard and that's hard and he there's no

  110. preface it's a it's literally a two-word

  111. verse yes Rejoice

  112. always and then the verse 17 says pray

  113. without without ceasing yes it's just

  114. pray without what does pray without

  115. ceasing even look like you know and

  116. that's one of the things again going

  117. back to what we we we identify the rules

  118. okay I have to go someplace I have to

  119. close my eyes I have to get on my knees

  120. I have to bow my head I have to fold my

  121. hands and that's not what you see in in

  122. scripture I mean yes there are times

  123. whenever that takes place but there are

  124. so many times that they're you know on

  125. their knees on their bellies or or hands

  126. lifted in the air eyes wide open I know

  127. for me sometimes if I'm heartbroke in my

  128. car down the road and just God you know

  129. what's going on today tonight or however

  130. it is I need your help you know I don't

  131. close my eyes when I was to say I really

  132. would recommend that you not close your

  133. eyes if you're praying and driving

  134. that's that's probably not wisdom

  135. occasionally I'll have a prayer two in

  136. my in my deer stand you know and it's

  137. hard to see a deer with your eyes closed

  138. that's right so you know I can get

  139. really close to God but I still want to

  140. keep the eye out for the deer in case

  141. that's whenever he answers that prayer

  142. right well you know I mean I've shot a

  143. lot of deer after I woke up and my wife

  144. just swears that it was because I

  145. snoring and they and they heard me

  146. snoring and wanted to come see what that

  147. was exact but but you know it and and

  148. and right after that verse pray without

  149. ceasing it says in all things give

  150. thanks give thanks and so you start

  151. putting those things together Rejoice

  152. always pray without ceasing in all

  153. things give thanks and then it goes on

  154. to say for this is the will of God for

  155. you in Christ Jesus and so as we talk

  156. about spiritual growth we begin to see

  157. that there's there there's a real

  158. Dynamic to that because our Thanksgiving

  159. is expressed most often through prayer

  160. yes um we we are either expressing

  161. Thanksgiving through prayer or we're

  162. expressing Thanksgiving through

  163. testimony where we're actually sharing

  164. with somebody else what God has done in

  165. our lives exactly and I think you're

  166. absolutely right in America specifically

  167. we take so much for granted that

  168. everything is um it's coincidence or

  169. it's happen stance or it's I earned that

  170. or it's you know I you know and not

  171. really recognizing God's hand on our

  172. country God's hand on our lives God's

  173. hand on our family um and just how

  174. quickly it could be the other way yeah

  175. you know I know growing up I mean I had

  176. a grandmother had great faith and I know

  177. she prayed for every one of her kids and

  178. her grandkids and our great- grandkids

  179. every night I mean that's right and

  180. probably every morning and every noon I

  181. mean to to be in in for reality I know

  182. my mom did too and I know I do for my

  183. kids and my grandkids and our church and

  184. our country and you know God wants to

  185. hear that and just like I enjoy

  186. communication from my kids and my grand

  187. and my grandson I enjoy communication

  188. and I enjoy identifying their needs and

  189. you know the question is does God know

  190. our needs without us praying and if so

  191. why should we pray oh that's a great

  192. question I've actually had someone ask

  193. me that one time well what was what's

  194. the point why why do we keep doing this

  195. if if if God already knows our needs

  196. before we ask it which by the way is

  197. found in Matthew chapter 6 in m Matthew

Matthew 6 chapter mention Matthew 6 chapter mention

  198. chapter 6 it it says that God knows your

  199. need before you ask it but yet it's in

  200. the context of praying exactly so in the

  201. middle of that he's saying

  202. pray but the difference

  203. is the need becomes the

  204. focus instead of the

  205. relationship and so the idea behind that

  206. Matthew 6 passage is not that you're

  207. just expressing a need it's that the

  208. need gets lifted out of the way because

  209. you understand that already knows your

  210. need even if you're expressing it and

  211. the relationship becomes the focus of

  212. prayer and I and I often say it like

  213. this I've been married I'm going to be

  214. going into 32 years this coming March

  215. and I know you are right at the

  216. threshold of 30 31 yeah 30 years I can

  217. promise you Scott if you didn't talk to

  218. your wife and if you never learn to

  219. listen and to to recognize her voice

  220. your relationship wouldn't have lasted

  221. 30 years what it not not even one I

  222. don't think yeah you know and and that's

  223. you know and that's exactly the point of

  224. of that relationship so let's you know

  225. let's grab one more example here while

  226. we've got time and let's talk about what

  227. did Jesus teach us about prayer yeah

  228. because there's the passage of the

  229. Lord's Prayer sure what we call the

  230. Lord's Prayer right which I I think you

  231. know in my understanding I've kind of

  232. flipped on that a little bit is what we

  233. normally think of the Lord Lord prayer

  234. Our Father who are in heaven Hallowed be

  235. thy name is really the model prayer it

  236. teaches us how to pray the subject

  237. matter starting with the recognition

  238. like you said the relationship between

  239. between us and the father but when you

  240. really want to get down to what I call

  241. the Lord's Prayer you have to go to the

  242. Garden of Gethsemane right before the

  243. crucifixion so talk to us about that

  244. that instance where Christ is praying to

  245. the father in his time of need and

  246. distress yeah so so there's a couple of

  247. different places that's talked about

  248. that Lord's prayer that you're talking

  249. about is Matthew 6 and Luke 11 but then

  250. the what we call the Priestly prayer of

  251. Jesus which is the the real meat and

  252. potatoes of what he was praying in the

  253. garden is found in John chapter 17 and

    John 17 chapter mention

  254. in the midst of that he begins to lay

  255. forward um a number of different things

  256. that that he has fulfilled the purpose

  257. of God he's ready for God to be

  258. glorified he's ready for his glory to

  259. come back and then he begins to pray

  260. for the apostles who are going to carry

  261. the church forward and then he goes on

  262. and he begins to pray for you and for me

  263. um when you put yourself in that text in

  264. John chapter 17 and begin to realize

    John 17 chapter mention

  265. that Jesus in that moment 2,000 years

  266. ago as he was getting ready to go to the

  267. Cross was praying for you and was

  268. praying for me that we would be

  269. one as he and the father are one praying

  270. for us to be as Believers as the body of

  271. Christ

  272. not just unified in that but unified in

  273. our relationship unified in our faith

  274. unified in this walk on this Earth where

  275. we're able to walk through trials and

  276. tribulations together and hold one

  277. another up that is a powerful expression

  278. of what Jesus's heart was for us to do

  279. as he was doing and so there's a great

  280. picture in that that's part of the

  281. reason why we pray corporately exactly

  282. is because we're unifying ourselves to

  283. come before the Lord in prayer and offer

  284. up not just

  285. this need the the the wants the desires

  286. which I I I tend to call crisis praying

  287. right it's the it's the the only time

  288. that we really think about praying the

  289. rest of the time we're just kind of

  290. coasting through life but man when you

  291. hit up against a brick wall you have

  292. Christ's prayer and and

  293. oftentimes you in that moment you make a

  294. vow right essentially say Lord if you'll

  295. if you'll get me out of this M if you if

  296. you'll take care of this then I'll serve

  297. you the rest of my life or I'll I'll

  298. pray every day and and you know when God

  299. does because he's faithful often times

  300. we forget about that very

  301. quickly I think about and we've talked

  302. about at 911 right yes what what
