  1. welcome to shifting perspectives

  2. biblical conversations about topics that

  3. matter let's get to

  4. [Music]

  5. it hey everybody welcome back to another

  6. episode of Shifting perspectives and

  7. this is a this is a really important

  8. topic that we're getting ready to dive

  9. into and I think it's a lot of fun but I

  10. also think it's a CH for both those who

  11. are skeptical and those who are

  12. believers I think that you know whenever

  13. we talk about this topic today this is

  14. this is where many new and as you say

  15. even even seasoned Christians really

  16. have trouble defending their faith and

  17. understanding exactly uh where they're

  18. going in in life sometimes so I hope

  19. this this uh next few minutes and next

  20. couple of sessions as we go into this

  21. really lay out some important things to

  22. help you be better and stronger whenever

  23. it comes to sharing the gospel yeah so

  24. let me let me throw out there because I

  25. think there's a lot of people I've been

  26. doing this what now this is my 33rd year

  27. in Ministry um 34th year yeah I'm old

  28. you're old Carl I don't know what

  29. happened but over the course of that

  30. time the number of people that have

  31. asked the question to me both both those

  32. who are not of the faith and those who

  33. are of the faith of why do we find the

  34. Bible believable and trustworthy worthy

  35. that number I can't even begin to count

  36. over the course of that time so it's a

  37. really important question so so first I

  38. would encourage you as you're watching

  39. this take a moment to like it take a

  40. moment to share it but also put some

  41. comments in there ask some questions

  42. that we can possibly help Define this a

  43. little better because there's a lot of

  44. information that we're going to go

  45. through probably right fairly quickly

  46. just to try to keep this short and you

  47. might have a question that didn't get

  48. answered and we want to answer those

  49. questions yeah absolutely I mean we're

  50. talking about the Cornerstone of

  51. Christian belief and that is the

  52. infallible word of God um you know if if

  53. we lose that then you know the

  54. Cornerstone is broken right and this

  55. Cornerstone is not broken that's right

  56. we know it you know I like you I've

  57. studied it for a lot of years and it

  58. this was one of the most interesting

  59. studies I took I ever undertook and I

  60. did I started 20 years ago in just this

  61. area of why do we really believe this

  62. book that's right yeah and so it's

  63. really really important and that's

  64. really kind of the great segue to start

  65. with the first the first part of this if

  66. you will and and we so we start with the

  67. Bible we first have to kind of Define

  68. what it is that we're talking about so

  69. um the Bible in itself is not a

  70. book but you know what's interesting is

  71. if it's it's it is the number one

  72. selling book of all time if you if you

  73. put book in in the category of that over

  74. a million copies a year yeah million cop

  75. so there is a significant interest in

  76. the world in biblical topics and

  77. biblical conversations and there's also

  78. a s significant amount of skepticism yes

  79. but for a Christian the Bible we hold a

  80. very high value on the Bible and what it

  81. says As a Christian maybe not so much as

  82. what others are and maybe it's being

  83. bought for those who are curious or who

  84. have an interest but for those who of us

  85. who have come to Faith the bible really

  86. is a high value to us yeah in it we find

  87. uh these four core principles that we

  88. believe that we stand on and and and

  89. this is kind of what we're going to

  90. Define as we go through this is why

  91. these core these four core values there

  92. are that the Bible is an errant the

  93. Bible is without error the Bible is

  94. infallible in other words it will not

  95. fail in its purposes and the

  96. truthfulness of it accomplishes its

  97. purpose um and and we can talk about

  98. some scriptures you know Isaiah 55 says

  99. that the word of God will not return

  100. void but it will accomplish all of his

  101. purposes so the Bible won't fail it's

  102. infallible in that then the Bible is

  103. authoritative right it is what we build

  104. our lives on it's not the foundation of

  105. Christ but the Christ that we come to

  106. comes from the Bible right yes and so uh

  107. it's the it's the Bible of the C uh it's

  108. the Christ of the Bible not the Christ

  109. of YouTube or Facebook or you know some

  110. other ideas that are out there that that

  111. often times are you know I love Jesus

  112. and I have a relationship with him but

  113. it's not the it's not the Jesus that the

  114. Bible teaches us about right exactly a

  115. lot of false teachings you know and even

  116. false Bibles out there that do not

  117. follow the original the original

  118. manuscripts and the original writings

  119. things being added things being removed

  120. you know and when you talk about the

  121. word of God I mean Jesus is referred to

  122. as the word of God right these are

  123. Jesus's words these are the ones study

  124. that's why we're very particular about

  125. you know what is taught and and read and

  126. understood not to get into um you know

  127. these other areas where where confusion

  128. may arise as you start taking things out

  129. and putting things in so as Christ's

  130. perfect word for his perfect goal of

  131. accomplishing the the ministry here on

  132. Earth uh we have to be comfortable and

  133. understand and have Rock Solid

  134. confidence in um you know this book

  135. which is a combination of books of being

  136. the inherent word of God right

  137. absolutely and so so that's three and

  138. then the fourth one is that the Bible is

  139. sufficient it is sufficient for us to be

  140. able to build our lives on and and so we

  141. get that from scripture we get those

  142. four things from scripture because the

  143. Bible actually teaches those four things

  144. um and and so like like Scott said this

  145. is not a book it's a collection of how

  146. many books are are in the Bible we got

  147. 66 of

  148. 66 different books in the Bible there's

  149. 39 in the Old Testament 27 in the new um

  150. and what we what we like to say about

  151. the Bible as a starting place is the

  152. Bible is a compilation of books written

  153. by

  154. eyewitnesses every one of these books

  155. that we find in the Bible was written by

  156. an eyewitness to the Life of Christ to

  157. the ministry in the Old Testament to the

  158. prophetic words that pointed to Christ

  159. matter of fact there's a lot of script

  160. ures that point to that fact that it was

  161. written by eyewitnesses and so these are

  162. these are historically accurate

  163. eyewitnesses or eyewitness accounts but

  164. you know what's interesting about those

  165. eyewitness accounts that are written in

  166. this is that we say that the

  167. eyewitnesses that wrote these were in

  168. the presence of other eyewitnesses yes

  169. and eyewitnesses if you look if you go

  170. to court today I mean that's that's one

  171. of the Lynch pin right I mean you get an

  172. eyewitness to to to get on the stand and

  173. testify and and point to you know a

  174. defendant um that carries a lot of

  175. weight and that's significant for us to

  176. even begin with exactly and that's what

  177. you have here is not just each book

  178. being an eyewitness but multiple

  179. eyewitnesses so you've not got two

  180. people standing there saying hey I saw I

  181. saw Carl do this you've got 200 or 2,000

  182. or 5,000 or 50,000 in some cases saying

  183. we all saw the same thing we were coming

  184. together and then all the books mees

  185. those things together where they become

  186. eyewitnesses to each other as we and we

  187. talked about in the past these Golden

  188. Threads that run through the Bible the

  189. books become eyewitnesses of themselves

  190. absolutely and that's what ties it

  191. together into that that tapestry that

  192. can't be broken absolutely and so when

  193. you begin to think about that as a as an

  194. example um we're just a few short weeks

  195. away from Easter um which is one of the

  196. Paramount holidays for Christians

  197. because we are celebrating Easter um

  198. really we're celebrating the death

  199. burial and resurrection of Christ yes

  200. him going to the Cross which we talk

  201. about the gospel over and over and over

  202. again but but the gospel of him going to

  203. the Cross doesn't end there he goes into

  204. the ground and then he rises again we

  205. celebrate that and and let me just take

  206. a moment here and invite you if you

  207. don't have a place to go for Easter um

  208. that is a great place to step in and

  209. find out about this Jesus and this Jesus

  210. of the Bible that ultimately gave his

  211. life for you and and for me um but one

  212. of those eyewitness accounts that we

  213. talk about is found in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  214. chapter 15 Paul wrote 1 Corinthians um

  215. and in 1 Corinthians 15 as he's

  216. describing the gospel and specifically

  217. the resurrection he's really talking

  218. about the resurrection in 1 Corinthians

  219. 15 he says that besides Jesus being seen

  220. after the resurrection by the TW

  221. Apostles by James Jesus's brother by

  222. others he then says there were over 500

  223. MH eyewitnesses to Jesus's resurrection

  224. that didn't write books of the Bible

  225. that you know are not even touted by

  226. name but just the fact alone that there

  227. were that many who saw him and then we

  228. have some other evidences when we talk

  229. about eyewitnesses you know a book of

  230. eyewitnesses accounts that were

  231. witnessed by other eyewitnesses there

  232. were people not just of the faith who

  233. were

  234. eyewitnesses um we have Romans

  235. historians uh tactus is his name you

  236. know I get all screwed up because The

  237. Story Keepers videos for kids has a has

  238. a character that's a Roman Centurion

  239. named tacticus and so I always get them

  240. anyway there's a Roman historian during

  241. that time frame named tacus who writes

  242. of Jesus's death burial resurrection and

  243. his life and so you know that's

  244. completely outside of the faith

  245. tradition that's not Paul writing a book

  246. of the Bible that's somebody who's not a

  247. Christian who is testifying to the

  248. things that that we know and and so not

  249. just a Roman historian but we also have

  250. this fellow by the name of flavius

  251. Josephus flavius Josephus was a Jewish

  252. historian also not a Christian by the

  253. way correct but he wrote of Jesus's life

  254. death and Resurrection so this is a

  255. compilation of eyewitness accounts that

  256. were witnessed by eyewitnesses that can

  257. testify ify to its veracity that it is

  258. truthful and the the the story that we

  259. find here which is really the story it's

  260. God's story isn't that what we call it

  261. yeah you know and it is and you know to

  262. add to what you're you're saying there

  263. is you realize and and this goes back to

  264. understanding timelines but the the the

  265. common images out there is that Jesus

  266. was put in the grave and then he

  267. ascended to heaven and all these all

  268. these references that you're creating

  269. come from the fact with he was on Earth

  270. after the resurrection for 40 days right

  271. absolutely he was walking the Earth he

  272. was meeting with people he people saw

  273. him not just not just per say Christians

  274. and Jews but the the Romans that you're

  275. talking about this wasn't a quick thing

  276. I mean he was walking around showing

  277. himself here feel the scars you know

  278. touch touch my side having conversations

  279. and all those things that are reference

  280. in those in those writers and many

  281. others that you're talking about you

  282. know we have to realize it wasn't a he

  283. went in the grave and we never saw him

  284. again so his body was stolen it was he

  285. walked out of that grave and was saw

  286. many times for many days yeah that's

  287. right so so this is a collection of 66

  288. books that are written by eyewitnesses

  289. from uh or in the presence of other

  290. eyewitnesses um and that's just one

  291. beginning of why we believe the Bible um

  292. the next thing that you could say from

  293. that is this is 66 different books that

  294. were written on three different count

  295. continents by 40 different authors mhm

  296. over 1500 years 1500 years right 1500

  297. years a century and a half and those 40

  298. authors um you know they weren't pastors

  299. who were educated Scholars priests you

  300. know what what you would call that you

  301. had everything from Kings who wrote

  302. books to those who were priests prophets

  303. fishermen you know all different walks

  304. of life isn't that wonderful that God

  305. uses mhm every single person every

  306. single person in every single range

  307. demographic all the other all the other

  308. metrics I mean it's not isolated to the

  309. rich or to the poor or to one color or

  310. another I mean he used everybody one one

  311. occupation verse is he he brought them

  312. all together and revealed the word to be

  313. written down for a purpose for a purpose

  314. to bring the gospel and bring we call it

  315. history right it's his story The

  316. revelation of God in his word over 1500

  317. years 40 different authors of all walks

  318. of life over three different continents

  319. number one best

  320. selling book M of all time of all times

  321. and has stood the test of time for over

  322. 2,000 years and also the most

  323. scrutinized book it is also the most

  324. scrutinized book people have spent

  325. tremendous time energy lifetime studies

  326. I can give you three or four of those

  327. spent the lifetime trying to debunk that

  328. Y and almost every one of them come to

  329. the same conclusion and that is that the

  330. Bible is so true and so perfect that

  331. they end up giving their life to Christ

  332. Y and there's many of those people out

  333. there that uh set out on that purpose to

  334. debunk and only to find that it's it's

  335. perfect you know one of those is an

  336. interesting uh sidebar as we wrap up

  337. here one of those um is is a fellow by

  338. the name alast strobl um and he set out

  339. because his wife came to Christ to

  340. debunk the whole resurrection of Jesus

  341. thing ultimately did all of the factual

  342. research as a um investigative

  343. journalist a guy who knows how to dig

  344. exactly you know and so from a guy who

  345. knows how to dig who ultimately came to

  346. the realization that this is true and

  347. gave his life to Christ you can find his

  348. story his testimony in both a book and a

  349. movie it's called the case for Christ

  350. right um and so let me encourage you as

  351. we wrap this one up again this is just

  352. the beginning as we begin to talk about

  353. the Bible why it's trustworthy and

  354. believable um go check that movie out I

  355. bet you can find it on Amazon Prime or

  356. on you Youtube or somewhere or go watch

  357. that story or if you're a reader like I

  358. am get the book and and read the book

  359. and and let that encourage you as well

  360. as you're on a journey of why is this

  361. Bible trustworthy and with that we'll

  362. wrap up this session and we'll jump into

  363. another session on the same topic you

  364. all have a great week we'll see you next

  365. Friday we'll talk to you later byebye

  366. see you Friday
