  1. welcome to shifting perspectives

  2. biblical conversations about topics that

  3. matter let's get to

  4. [Music]

  5. it hey everybody welcome back to another

  6. episode of Shifting perspectives and

  7. we're we're on this journey on why is

  8. the Bible trustworthy why is the Bible

  9. believable and ultimately why do we as

  10. Christians put such a high value on it

  11. you know it is the Cornerstone of what

  12. we've got and if we don't understand not

  13. just from okay it's the Bible we believe

  14. it but the why of why we believe it if

  15. we don't have a good Cornerstone faith

  16. in that and understanding of that then

  17. it becomes easier for us to be led

  18. astray by someone presenting uh

  19. scriptures out of context or um you know

  20. U some of the myths that are going

  21. around so if we don't understand the the

  22. Bible where it come from what is why we

  23. believe what we believe you know it can

  24. it can expose us to uh you know some

  25. potentially challenging conversations

  26. and and you know ultimately that doubt

  27. so it's it's important for uh for um

  28. experienced Believers to deepen their

  29. understanding of Bible Bible background

  30. where it came from what it means as well

  31. as for new Christians to begin that

  32. journey and realize how this thing is

  33. really Dynamic and why they say the word

  34. of God is alive because it is dynamic it

  35. fits different molds and different

  36. situation so we need to all be growing

  37. in our understanding realizing we're

  38. probably never going to get to that

  39. complete growth right uh but it is a it

  40. is a it's a journey not a destination

  41. that's right and so last time we talked

  42. about um you know we talk about what the

  43. Bible is really we just kind of went

  44. through what is the Bible um this week

  45. I'd really like us to talk about um a

  46. topic that I

  47. think resonates both with those who um

  48. are Skeptics or those who have not come

  49. to Faith and also those who have come to

  50. Faith and that's the idea that since you

  51. can't really know and you can't really

  52. trust you have to accept whether that's

  53. accepting Christ or accepting what's in

  54. the Bible on what we call Blind Faith um

  55. Blind Faith is a philosophical under a

  56. philosophical term it's called fism okay

  57. um ISM basically says that um your faith

  58. is built around uh two things an

  59. experience and a shared relationship so

  60. my experience I had I had some kind of

  61. an experience maybe I got some

  62. butterflies I I I got goosebumps and I

  63. and I had an experience that caused me

  64. to caused me to believe um and that

  65. experience is a shared experience

  66. through relationship that there are

  67. other people who have had experiences

  68. and because of of that um you have to

  69. take it on faith um and the Bible talks

  70. a lot about faith um and so from

  71. statements like um the just shall live

  72. by faith right the just shall live by

  73. faith comes from habach chapter 2 and

  74. out of habc chapter 2 it's quoted three

  75. different times in the New Testament in

  76. the book of Hebrews the book of

  77. Colossians um and the Book of Romans um

  78. all talk about that we live by

  79. faithh um first Corinthians chapter 5 2

1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention 2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  80. Corinthians chapter 5 see I it again 2

    2 Corinthians 5:7

  81. Corinthians chapter 5 verse 7 says that

  82. we walk by faith and not by sight so

  83. here's the question then is it Blind

  84. Faith that we just haphazardly fall into

  85. yeah and that I think is that I think is

  86. a a teaching that is out there is God's

  87. The Authority don't question him just

  88. just do you know and and I I kind of

  89. grew up um understanding a little bit of

  90. that was you know don't ask God why

  91. right you know but then as you study the

  92. Bible and this is why the Bible teaches

  93. you and grows you through my lifetime it

  94. became the the relationship between me

  95. and between God and and the believer is

  96. not that of yes he is the authority over

  97. us but God's not waiting for us to make

  98. a mistake or do something wrong just to

  99. crack the hammer yeah exactly you know

  100. the the Bible teaches if you study in

  101. context the whole thing

  102. that of a loving father that you know

  103. and and it talks about us being the

  104. adopted children of God that once we

  105. become the Believers that's not the

  106. relationship that a father and a child

  107. has you know and as I come to to grow

  108. through some tough experiences in life

  109. which we've all had whether you believe

  110. or not you're going to go through hard

  111. times it's just easier to go through

  112. than when you do believe but the belief

  113. needs to have faith and that's what

  114. we're talking about is Faith was stru

  115. was with with a with a foundation

  116. underneath it so yes it's blind faith

  117. that Blind Faith becomes because of

  118. experience and things I know so going

  119. back to that to that example that I was

  120. talking about is don't question God

  121. don't ask God why okay as a father

  122. whenever my children were young I

  123. encouraged them to ask me why I wanted

  124. them to know okay why does Dad or Mom

  125. make the decision why are we doing

  126. things this way why are we why is this

  127. happening because that allows me to

  128. teach them and understand and and and

  129. provide understanding to them so the

  130. question of why is not they're

  131. questioning my for

  132. the question of why is I want to

  133. understand I want to grow and I want to

  134. know deeper I think as Christians

  135. whenever we ask God why he wants us to

  136. know the same thing the challenge is his

  137. ways are so much higher than our ways

  138. that sometimes we can't understand you

  139. know it's kind like I've always said

  140. it's kind of teaching you know um

  141. teaching algebra to kindergarten right

  142. you know you just can't do it sometimes

  143. you have to say this is the answer and

  144. that's okay because you can't understand

  145. the complexity So Blind Faith is is I

  146. trust the Bible I trust God I trust him

  147. because

  148. I understand the Cornerstone and the

  149. scriptures and the principles to the

  150. best of my ability which he's revealed

  151. to me over over a 50-year timeline of of

  152. being on this Earth You know it's it's

  153. it's interesting that you would you

  154. would bring up that why component to

  155. this the very first mention of the

  156. gesture I liveed by faith that verse

  157. that I was talking about is in habach

  158. Chapter 2 and it is God's response to

  159. habach asking the question of why yeah I

  160. too grew up hearing that that you know

  161. you don't tempt God you don't test God

  162. you don't ask God why you know it's just

  163. God and you just kind of kind of kind of

  164. go with it and and I wrestled with that

  165. because I did too I'm not a guy that

  166. stomachs very well just do it and I and

  167. I think here's the reality um humans in

  168. general are not ones who are inclined to

  169. just shut up and do it right none of us

  170. are I just got to in my throat that just

  171. came on but but so so if we're supposed

  172. to live by faith and we're supposed to

  173. walk by faith um is that the the is that

  174. the stopping place then we just say oh

  175. well I'm just supposed to accept this

  176. and I think you answered that very well

  177. with we asked the questions of why and

  178. much of that comes from studying this

  179. word right that's where it comes from it

  180. absolutely yeah and so we can't build

  181. our faith on a foundation so that we can

  182. live by faith so that we can uh walk by

  183. faith and not by sight if this is not

  184. believable correct So Blind Faith is not

  185. the answer to the skeptic who's saying

  186. well you just accepted that and you're

  187. just believing that

  188. blindly um the answer is we're really

  189. not um you know the Bible says in Psalms

  190. 34 and verse 8 it says taste and see

  191. that the Lord is good both all of those

  192. things are experiential in nature right

  193. um and we experience the love of God but

  194. we experience the love of God based on

  195. God's nature God's nature is revealed in

  196. his word how did you know um that God

  197. wasn't the ogre or the or the one that

  198. was just sitting back looking waiting

  199. for you to make a mistake so that he

  200. could correct you well he goes back to

  201. you know it goes back to what we talked

  202. about it's what is written in this book

  203. and you know we have to be very careful

  204. because we pull pieces and parts out the

  205. book as a whole teaches that loving

  206. fatherly nature of God I mean he took

  207. his people out and yes they face

  208. challenges as we Face challenges but he

  209. never failed them right he has never

  210. failed me right and so you know we talk

  211. about what we believe in I believe in

  212. what I see and what I've experienced yes

  213. I went through things that at the time I

  214. was going through them

  215. look like God do you know understand and

  216. I I I heard I heard a guy say this one

  217. time and it has resonated my heart so

  218. much you're in the middle of the test

  219. you're you're praying you're doing the

  220. things you're searching scripture and

  221. you feel like you're

  222. alone and I had a guy tell me one time

  223. well the you know the teacher doesn't

  224. talk during the test right you know it's

  225. after you get through the test and you

  226. get through the other side and you

  227. continue you you reach that wall and say

  228. I'm either going to crash into this wall

  229. that I see in front of me and by the

  230. time you run up to it the Wall's only

  231. two inches high you step over into

  232. something so much better and so much

  233. nicer but whenever you're approaching it

  234. it looks like that wall is 20 foot tall

  235. and 40 foot thick right and whenever you

  236. get to that wall it's just I'm going to

  237. run into it by the grace of God and with

  238. the faith and you find out that this

  239. Faith thing really does work right it

  240. really does it really does work and but

  241. it's got to be based on that book that

  242. we study it it's his principles his book

  243. that lovingly father relationship I'm

  244. not going to hurt you I'm not going to

  245. put you in things that are not uh that

  246. are not good for you I'm going to teach

  247. you something from a hard time yeah and

  248. by the way Hard Times exist I'll I'll

  249. emphasize this point whether you're a

  250. Christian or not hard times exist we

  251. will go through hard times so don't

  252. blame a hard time just on God they

  253. happen to everybody yeah and so here's

  254. what Blind Faith doesn't lend itself to

  255. Faith itself correct Blind Faith lends

  256. itself or leads to

  257. doubt because if you can't trust the

  258. word of God you can't put your faith in

  259. the promises of God you can't put your

  260. faith in the nature that he's a loving

  261. father and so what do you do if you

  262. can't put your faith in the nature of a

  263. loving father you begin to live in one

  264. of two identities and those are either

  265. the fear-based identity which is uh I

  266. better do those things that they're

  267. telling me that I'm supposed to do you

  268. that I'm not even sure are really true

  269. because I I don't have a foundation of

  270. of the Bible but but some Christian told

  271. me I need to live this way or I need to

  272. be this way and if I don't God's going

  273. to punish me so I'm afraid of the

  274. consequence or you live in this other

  275. one which is the what we call the

  276. performance-based identity that says I

  277. really want to do well because I really

  278. want God to be happy with me at the end

  279. of the

  280. day he's our loving father Yes who

  281. already Delights in US

  282. and so how do we combat Blind Faith so

  283. that it doesn't become doubt that leads

  284. us away from faith and into unbelief but

  285. rather moves us towards faith and that's

  286. in the foundation of this Bible and

  287. believing that it's true and knowing

  288. that we have historical facts behind

  289. it there goes that tickle again as we

  290. you know as we look about and you think

  291. about Blind Faith blind being I can't

  292. see you know really what what to me over

  293. my over my my years of study have been

  294. you know it's kind of like putting a set

  295. of binoculars to your eyes and they

  296. being as far out of focus as I can get

  297. so when I use set of binoculars I have

  298. to turn them all the way to the right if

  299. you turn them all the way to the left

  300. you look all you see is patterns and

  301. some you know if you're looking outside

  302. it's some greens and some yellows you

  303. can't make out anything and as you turn

  304. the that that little dial everything

  305. starts coming into Focus right and I

  306. think that that little dial is spending

  307. time in prayer in the world in the word

  308. in life experiences in trusting God to

  309. handle the hard times even though it's

  310. hard when you're going through them

  311. leaning on your brothers and sisters in

  312. Christ having a strong church family

  313. around you all those things we talked

  314. about in the first eight or 10 of these

  315. videos as you turn that dial all of a

  316. sudden Faith becomes not blind but much

  317. more clear exactly and it doesn't get

  318. Crystal Clear till we get to meet Jesus

  319. face to feet but you know as we turn

  320. that dial on the earth we get to

  321. experience a little bit more of of the

  322. clarity that God God provides to us and

  323. that's why he gives us that book so it's

  324. not just blind it's these are the

  325. experiences now I can look back and see

  326. how God has walked me through my life

  327. absolutely and that was a fabulous

  328. illustration that describes the

  329. difference between Blind Faith and faith

  330. that becomes clear as we walk with God

  331. through his word I don't think we could

  332. add anything else so with that we'll

  333. close this one and you know now comes

  334. the maybe the exciting part in the next

  335. one maybe the boring part but next time

  336. we're actually going to talk about some

  337. some statistical facts to why the Bible

  338. is trustworthy and believable as a as a

  339. as a true historical document about God

  340. and His Story we'll see you all next

  341. Friday have a great week have a great

  342. week
