  1. Hello, this is David, and I am here with Trent

  2. and Tammy Smith today, and they're going to read

  3. you a couple of scriptures. But before that,

  4. I've asked them to share an element that points

  5. to Christ during this season. Hello, Oak Ridge.

  6. Hey, everyone. I hope you are having a great

  7. holiday. I hope this month is a really blessed

  8. time for you. I know it always is for us. I was

  9. very busy, but it always ends up being very blessed.

  10. And one of the things that we do as a big tradition

  11. in our family during Christmas is we do a scavenger

  12. hunt for our main gift with the family. And so

  13. we have a group that, I mean, we get together

  14. every year. There's 16 of us. But what's interesting

  15. about this, this scavenger hunt started with

  16. my grandmother. So now we're on the fourth generation

  17. of people hunting for gifts. on my side of the

  18. family. And so it's a real tradition where you

  19. come to Nana's house and there's a clue on the

  20. tree and that leads you to five other clues and

  21. eventually you find your gift. And the first

  22. person to find their gift is the one who gets

  23. to open their gift first. And so there's this

  24. hustle and there's this excitement about it and

  25. there's this very childlike exuberance that happens

  26. and that just fills the house during this time.

  27. In a strange way, I was starting to think about

  28. how does that point you to Christ? Well, that

  29. for me, if you think about the process, you start

  30. this process of the scavenger hunt, you're really

  31. seeking that gift. And Christ is our greatest

  32. gift. If we spend our time seeking Him and going

  33. from, you're gonna hit a clue here and a clue

  34. there, and it's going to lead you to something

  35. even greater all along the way. And if you continue

  36. to seek Him, then the gifts that you receive

  37. are just incredible and they just continue to

  38. come on. It's not a once a year thing, it's a

  39. constant thing that happens. And that's what

  40. he's asking us to do, seek and find. And so that's

  41. one thing that kind of crossed my mind. That's

  42. a huge tradition in our family that we love to

  43. enjoy every year. Awesome. It sounds like his

  44. presence is your present. So I looked at the

  45. acronym that you sent David and I saw you know

  46. the Christ acronym and I saw the first one Carol

  47. and I'm not a big Christmas Carol kind of person,

  48. but I do love songs and there has been one funny

  49. Holiday song that I've been listening to a lot

  50. lately that you know, it's not your traditional

  51. Carol But it definitely has brought me great

  52. joy. And so and it's a song by Carrie Underwood

  53. and it's called stretchy pants And so it's just

  54. very appropriate for this time of year, but it's

  55. all about making room for more holiday food.

  56. So I'm just going to share a few lines, like

  57. if you haven't heard the song, but she says,

  58. you know, my tummy is growling and I've been

  59. saving up space. I've got my place at the table.

  60. I can't fit no more on my plate. I've got my

  61. fork in my hand. I'm ready to stuff my face.

  62. So bring on those turkey, the potatoes, the casserole

  63. dishes, because I'm not messing around with them

  64. buttoned up britches because I got my stretchy

  65. pants on. The song is just so much about making

  66. room for more food, more celebration, more joy.

  67. And I was just thinking about what that, how

  68. that relates to Christ for me. And, you know,

  69. because it's about making room, you know, for

  70. Christ to come into our messy lives, to this

  71. busy time in our lives. It's about making that

  72. space for Him. So the Stretchy Pants song is,

  73. you know, joyful and it's silly. And but honestly,

  74. you know, for me, I needed that reminder because

  75. many times we put pressure on ourselves for everything

  76. to be perfect during this Christmas, to have

  77. the perfect meal, to have the perfect gift, you

  78. know, to just, everything to just be perfect.

  79. And so, and Christmas really shouldn't be about

  80. perfection, you know, it's about God choosing

  81. to come to earth for us and perfect people. You

  82. know, we all crave something deeper than food,

  83. you know, we can put the stretchy pants on, but

  84. we'll eventually get hungry, but Christ satisfies,

  85. you know, every hunger. Wow. I love how you heard

  86. that. And then it just ran with it in your mind,

  87. and it made room for Christ, which is, I mean,

  88. what we all hope for. Yes. It's definitely a

  89. fun time of the year, and I'll take it all the

  90. way around. All right. So do you all have some

  91. scriptures to share? We do. So I'll lead us off

  92. with Genesis 15, verses 1 through 18. Do not

    Genesis 15:1–18

  93. be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and

  94. your reward will be great.' But Abraham replied,

  95. O sovereign Lord, what good are all of your blessings

  96. if I don't even have a son? Since you've given

  97. me no children, Leaser of Damascus, a servant

  98. of my household, will inherit all of my wealth.

  99. You have given me no descendants of my own, so

  100. one of my servants will be my heir.' And then

  101. the Lord said to him, No, your servant will not

  102. be your heir, for you will have a son of your

  103. own, and he will be your heir." Then the Lord

  104. took Abram outside and said to him, look up at

  105. the sky and count the stars if you can. That's

  106. how many descendants you will have. And Abram

  107. believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as

  108. righteous because of his faith. The Lord told

  109. him, I am the Lord who brought you out of the

  110. Ur of Chaldeans to give you this land as your

  111. possession. But Abram replied, O sovereign Lord,

  112. how can I be sure that I will actually possess

  113. it? The Lord told him, bring me a three -year

  114. -old heifer, a three -year -old female goat,

  115. a three -year -old ram, a turtle dove, and a

  116. young pigeon. So Abram presented all of these

  117. things to him and he killed them. Then he cut

  118. each animal down the middle and laid their halves

  119. side by side. He did not, however, cut the birds

  120. in half. Some vultures swooped down to eat from

  121. the carcasses, but Abram chased them away. As

  122. the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep

  123. sleep, and a terrifying darkness came down over

  124. him. The Lord said to Abram, You can be sure

  125. that your descendants will be strangers in a

  126. foreign land, where they will be oppressed as

  127. slaves for four hundred years, but I will punish

  128. the nation that enslaves them, and in the end

  129. they will come away with great wealth. As for

  130. you, you will die in peace and be buried at a

  131. ripe old age. After four generations your descendants

  132. will return to this land and for the sins of

  133. the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction.

  134. After the sun went down and darkness fell, Abram

  135. saw a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch pass

  136. through the halves of the carcass. So the Lord

  137. made a covenant with Abram that day and said,

  138. I have given this land to your descendants all

  139. the way from the border of Egypt to the great

  140. Euphrates River. So what's significant to me

  141. about that verse really is the original covenant

  142. was always for the weaker party to walk through

  143. that. But yet in this instance, and even now,

  144. God chose to walk through there to Abram instead

  145. of the opposite way. And so God is making that

  146. covenant saying, I know you will never be able

  147. to keep this covenant, but I will make sure that

  148. you keep it. I'll take all the heat basically.

  149. It'll take the repercussions when it's broken

  150. and it keeps showing up over and over. So I have

  151. Matthew 12, 33 through 37. And it says, a tree

  152. is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good,

  153. its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its

  154. fruit will be bad. You brood of snakes, how could

  155. evil men like you speak what is good and right?

  156. For whatever is in your heart determines what

  157. you say. A good person produces good things from

  158. the treasury of a good heart. And an evil person

  159. produces evil things from the treasury of an

  160. evil heart. And I tell you this, you must give

  161. an account on judgment day for every idle word

  162. you speak. The words you say will either acquit

  163. you or condemn you. To me, this is an invitation

  164. to just look in our hearts and ask ourselves,

  165. you know, what is there? Is God occupying the

  166. space there? You know, what is the fruit of our

  167. life producing? You know, have we made space

  168. for Him? If we have, then others will see Him.

  169. You know, and then going back to the stretchy

  170. pants song. It makes me think about like putting

  171. on my spiritual stretchy pants, you know, and

  172. letting Christ stretch me. Well that's awesome.

  173. Who would have known that stretchy pants could

  174. have had such meaning? She didn't know she was

  175. writing a theological song.
