  1. Welcome to Shifting Perspectives,

  2. biblical conversations about topics that

  3. matter. Let's get to it.

  4. welcome you to a the first of two or

  5. three very interesting uh discussions on

  6. topic on a topic u that actually came

  7. out of discussion I had with a few

  8. people recently um as we were discussing

  9. these videos on things that they had

  10. seen and and and thought about and

  11. contemplated and it is uh really as I've

  12. done some research. One of the things

  13. that people really want the answer to

  14. and the the question becomes if we've

  15. got a Bible and we've talked about

  16. studying the Bible and we talked about

  17. what the Bible is and where it came

  18. from. If we've got that source of our

  19. single truth, then how can we have all

  20. these different denominations, all these

  21. different beliefs, all these different

  22. um subcategories of believers? What does

  23. that mean? Where does it come from?

  24. which one's right, which one's wrong. If

  25. I am trying to search out my faith, how

  26. do I navigate the road of all the

  27. different denominational pieces? Yeah,

  28. that's a great question. And and you

  29. know, that's really ultimately the

  30. reason why we're doing these videos is

  31. to provide some context and to provide

  32. some information for some people who are

  33. looking for answers uh biblical

  34. conversations about topics that matter.

  35. And this is a topic that matters for for

  36. a lot of people. what defines us as as

  37. brothers and sisters, what what maybe

  38. doesn't define us. And so, in order for

  39. us to really take that subject and kind

  40. of unpack it, we kind of need to address

  41. a couple of different things um kind of

  42. first and foremost. Um the first of

  43. those is what defines us as Christians.

  44. Um and so there's really three ways that

  45. we can look at this and that is um you

  46. know an an orthodox view of

  47. Christianity.

  48. um what we would consider error or a

  49. view that's not quite right u but

  50. doesn't necessarily make a person saved

  51. or not saved and in defining that we

  52. would say they they lean into um

  53. orthodoxy but maybe have some areas that

  54. they're a little off on. Um and then

  55. there's what we call heresy. Um and

  56. heresy we would define as as a religion,

  57. an organization. Maybe you would call it

  58. a denomination, but that is a group of

  59. people that by definition of what the

  60. Bible says are not saved. and they are

  61. presenting a picture even if they claim

  62. Jesus. Um, which is one of those things

  63. we've talked about, right? I mean, you

  64. can go on YouTube and you find somebody

  65. that says Jesus says this or Jesus says

  66. that and and they're not necessarily

  67. presenting the Jesus of the Bible.

  68. They're presenting a Jesus from

  69. something else. And so you can put some

  70. groups in that category that you

  71. probably ought to move out from

  72. immediately like um you know Mormons and

  73. whatever flavor that that is whether you

  74. call that community of Christ because

  75. you know they changed their names a few

  76. years ago um the reorganized church of

  77. Latter-day Saints um and there's another

  78. one I can't remember what it starts with

  79. an R2 it's not reorganized but it's u

  80. anyway uh but but that group one thing

  81. is is they hold to an extra biblical

  82. document as scripture, right? And that

  83. defines some things that are contrary to

  84. scripture. And the Jesus that they

  85. present doesn't align itself with

  86. orthodox Christianity. You know, another

  87. one you could say was the Jehovah's

  88. Witness. I mean, if you you mentioned if

  89. we all have the same Bible, right?

  90. Right. The Jehovah's Witness does not

  91. have the same Bible. Um their Bible is

  92. different than ours. Um, and so, um, we

  93. would say that if you fall into that

  94. camp, we would like to share with you

  95. the Jesus of the Bible. Um, and that

  96. goes back to the conversation we've had

  97. a few videos back. So if you haven't

  98. seen it on and actually one of the very

  99. first series we did was where the Bible

  100. came from, why this why we believe this

  101. is the Bible, the historical documents,

  102. the references, um you know, the extra

  103. biblant the outside of the Bible u

  104. writings of the time that corroborate

  105. what the Bible says. All of those

  106. things, you know, you got to have that

  107. because we say this is the Bible and the

  108. other ones are not. You got to go back

  109. in the history of this this Bible that

  110. we have as as inspiration inspired by

  111. God u with the history and the study

  112. that we've done behind that in some of

  113. those first videos. Go back and watch

  114. those because that's a foundation you

  115. understand as to why we say this is the

  116. Bible that we believe and why we believe

  117. what we believe which again was I think

  118. our first three or four three or four uh

  119. videos that we ever did. So jump into

  120. that and you because you need that for

  121. background as to why this Bible is

  122. important. Yeah, that's right. Um, and

  123. so out of that, you really need to

  124. define Christianity because, right, we

  125. live in America, so everybody's a

  126. Christian, right? We're a Christian

  127. nation. And so saying I'm a Christian,

  128. um, doesn't necessarily hold water when

  129. you compare what the Bible says, our

  130. Bible. And when I say our Bible, I mean

  131. the the Bible that we have those

  132. manuscript evidence that we have, that

  133. historical evidence that we have. When

  134. we say Christianity, we're defining it

  135. by something. We're defining it by the

  136. word of God. Um, others might say,

  137. "Well, we're Christian." Mormons will

  138. say, "Hey, I'm a Christian." And that's

  139. become rather mainstream of of them. And

  140. that's part of the reason why they

  141. changed their name to Community of

  142. Christ was because they wanted to to

  143. present themselves more Christian. Um,

  144. but ultimately at the end of the day,

  145. Christianity isn't defined by what what

  146. a denomination or what a religion says.

  147. It's defined by what we call orthodoxy.

  148. Okay? And so, what is what does that

  149. mean? So for the listener that's trying

  150. to unpack orthodoxy and has no idea what

  151. that means. What does that mean? How do

  152. we how do we measure that? How do we say

  153. this is what the Baptist or versus the

  154. Mormon versus all the other things that

  155. we've talked about what how do we how we

  156. define it? Sure. So um before I say how

  157. we define it, let me say that from a

  158. doctrinal position, we call we call our

  159. study of the word of God and our

  160. understanding of of the positions of God

  161. doctrine. Um, and so we do what we call

  162. uh theological or doctrinal triage. Now,

  163. some of you may not know this, but uh

  164. before I before I became a pastor, I was

  165. a career firefighter and an EMT and

  166. worked on an ambulance and I I still

  167. serve in that arena today. And we do um

  168. we have to do triage, right? So, if we

  169. go to let's say there's multiple

  170. patients on a car accident, we have to

  171. determine what is the highest order of

  172. priority in treatment that we that we

  173. treat those patients at. If you go to

  174. the emergency room, you're going to see

  175. what they call a triage nurse. And that

  176. triage nurse is going to decide whether

  177. the person who's having a heart attack

  178. in the in the lobby is a higher priority

  179. versus a lower priority than say the

  180. person who came in and fell out of a

  181. tree and has a broken arm. Um and those

  182. and and how we treat those. So orthodoxy

  183. is what we call tier one top tier

  184. highest priority. Um, orthodoxy is

  185. defined by the things that u both the

  186. historic faith and the word of God

  187. define as Christianity. And so what are

  188. those? What are some of those things?

  189. um at the at the barebones cusp of it,

  190. if you want to just narrow that, we

  191. would say um the uh the immaculate

  192. conception conceived by the Holy Spirit,

  193. the incarnation of Jesus Christ, his

  194. perfect sinless life, his death, burial,

  195. and resurrection on a cross as uh

  196. payment for our sins, um his ascension,

  197. his bodily return, Jesus is coming back

  198. again. And then inside of that, we would

  199. include the Trinity that there's only

  200. one God. So monotheistic. One God, three

  201. persons. God the Father, God the Son,

  202. and God the Holy Spirit. I could do we

  203. could do a whole video series on on what

  204. that looks like. So we won't no won't

  205. necessarily put that in here at the

  206. moment. But um orthodoxy um includes

  207. things like justification by faith. you

  208. know, our salvation, what Jesus did for

  209. us, um, really is, especially if you

  210. look at scriptures like Ephesians, uh,

  211. 2:8 and9. For by grace you're saved, um,

  212. not of works or not of anything that

  213. you've done. It's by faith that no, uh,

  214. no one can boast and claim that they did

  215. anything to accomplish that. It was

  216. solely accomplished by the work of

  217. Christ on the cross through his death,

  218. burial, and resurrection. You can't do

  219. anything to earn it. You can't do

  220. anything to keep it. Exactly. And so

  221. those are those are simple areas that we

  222. would define orthodoxy. And so so when

  223. you begin to talk about a denomination

  224. or um the local churches and maybe

  225. you're looking for a local church right

  226. now and there's tons of great local

  227. churches um in our community and

  228. probably whatever community you're in,

  229. there are a ton of great local churches.

  230. And our issue number one in finding one

  231. is that yeah, do they believe in

  232. justification by faith alone in the

  233. saving work of Jesus Christ in his

  234. substitutionary atonement? Do they

  235. believe in a triune God? Not

  236. polytheistic many gods but monotheistic

  237. one God in three persons, three distinct

  238. persons in the Godhead. Do they believe

  239. that? Um do they believe that he lived a

  240. perfect sinless life? Do they believe

  241. that um in that immaculate conception

  242. conceived by the Holy Spirit? Do they

  243. believe born of a virgin? Do they do

  244. they believe those things? And if they

  245. do, they are likely orthodox.

  246. Um and so within the realm of orthodoxy,

  247. if you're looking for a different, you

  248. know, say you're looking for a church,

  249. then you kind of got this group, we'll

  250. call it

  251. um lurggical

  252. um versus at least in that day it was

  253. contemporary. Nowadays, you might define

  254. contemporary different, but but a

  255. lurggical church might be orthodox, but

  256. their worship

  257. practice might look a little different.

  258. So you would say, you know, Lutheran,

  259. uh, Methodist, Episcopal, Anglican, you

  260. know, those those types of of churches

  261. that have a more, um, ritualistic

  262. approach to how they worship. Guess

  263. what? They're still Orthodox. I mean,

  264. they still believe those things, the

  265. same things. And then you might say in

  266. the contemporary camp, you might say,

  267. "Well, we're Southern Baptist." Yeah, we

  268. believe that same set of orthodoxy. Um,

  269. and you might go to the um, you know, to

  270. the Assembly of God church down the road

  271. and they're going to believe the the

  272. same orthodox truth about that. Um, and

  273. so those those kind of things

  274. define whether or not we're Christian or

  275. not, not why we have an Assembly of God

  276. denomination. Why do we have a Southern

  277. Baptist denomination? U, why do we have

  278. a Methodist denomination? We all believe

  279. orthodoxy. Yes. then it seems like it

  280. should be a no-brainer, right? That

  281. we're just we're just all together. We

  282. all all believe the same thing. And that

  283. is why we have second tier doctrinal

  284. issues that I think we'll jump into next

  285. week. And I and and I hope if you have

  286. questions about what orthodoxy looks

  287. like, what do we mean by what does it

  288. mean to be a Christian in our faith and

  289. and and whether or not you think

  290. something should be orthodox or not,

  291. shoot us a comment. Um, be sure you

  292. like, follow, and share because I bet

  293. there's lots of people out there that

  294. had this very same question. In that

  295. group I was in, there was it was like

  296. once that topic come up, that was the

  297. one everybody grabbed a hold of and

  298. said, "I'd love to know more about this.

  299. I'd love to know more about this. I'd

  300. love to know more about this." And so,

  301. so in our next video, we're really going

  302. to get into what we call second tier uh

  303. doctrinal issues. And those are the

  304. place where um two things happen. One,

  305. that's where denominations come into

  306. play, right? And that's um and that's

  307. where um even local church autonomy

  308. comes into play. Why is it that you can

  309. have a Southern Baptist church that

  310. believes one way and then go down the

  311. street and have a another Southern

  312. Baptist church that believes

  313. differently? Well, we call that the

  314. autonomy of the local church. um and the

  315. um the openness that we have to walk

  316. with brothers and sisters, but not the

  317. openness to say you're a leader in in my

  318. church, per se, but for the sake of the

  319. gospel, we partner together in areas

  320. that are and so we're going to kind of

  321. get into that stuff next week and talk

  322. about denominations and local church at

  323. Tommy. So, join us next week. It's going

  324. to be exciting. Um this is a great

  325. topic. So, uh we talked about tier

  326. number one. We're going to get into your

  327. number two uh coming in a week. So, see

  328. you then. Thank you.
