  1. of Christ the king.

  2. He said there would be

  3. the Lord

  4. where

  5. the power of

  6. paid it all.

  7. So praise the God of mercy.

  8. When he rose, he freed his children.

  9. Yes, he did.

  10. Praise God. In Christ

  11. over

  12. in death.

  13. He promises a future where joy will

  14. never cease

  15. for

  16. When he rose, he frees his children from

  17. the dark.

  18. It is finished. It is done. So take

  19. heart. He has over

  20. the victory we need

  21. the victory.

  22. He is overcro.

  23. Yes, he did.

  24. And he found the great deceiver

  25. and he

  26. love

  27. it.

  28. is done. So take

  29. over.

  30. Yes. The victory

  31. is the victory

  32. he

  33. is over

  34. in Christ. We are overcome.

  35. We've overcome.

  36. Good morning.

  37. Welcome back.

  38. Good morning to those of you who are

  39. online,

  40. >> wherever you may be. Let's stand if

  41. you're able and let's worship the Lord

  42. together this morning. It's a beautiful

  43. day, isn't it, today?

  44. It's just uh good for my soul. Even

  45. though it's super super cold, the

  46. sunshine just is good for the soul.

  47. Let's sing this chorus together.

  48. I want to know you.

  49. I want to hear your voice. I want to

  50. know you more.

  51. I want to touch you.

  52. I want to see your face. I want to know

  53. you more.

  54. In the secret, in the quiet place

  55. in the stillness, you are there.

  56. In the secret, in the quiet hour, I wait

  57. only for you. Cuz I want to know you

  58. more.

  59. I want to know you.

  60. I want to hear your voice. I want to

  61. know you more.

  62. And I want to touch you.

  63. I want to see your face. I want to know

  64. you more.

  65. I am reaching for the highest goal

  66. that I might receive

  67. the prize.

  68. pressing onward, pushing every hindrance

  69. aside, out of my way.

  70. Cuz I want to know you more.

  71. I want to know you.

  72. I want to hear your voice. I want to

  73. know you more.

  74. And I want to touch you.

  75. I want to see your face. I want to know

  76. you more.

  77. I want to know you.

  78. I want to hear your voice. I want to

  79. know you more.

  80. I want to touch you.

  81. I want to see your face. I want to know

  82. you more.

  83. I want to know you more.

  84. But one thing I do, forgetting what lies

  85. behind and straining forward to what

  86. lies ahead, I press on toward the goal

  87. for the prize of the upward call of God

  88. in Christ Jesus. I love that verse from

  89. our study this week. And

  90. that's the hardest thing to do is

  91. forgetting what lies behind. Uh but when

  92. we do, then we can press on toward what

  93. lies ahead and the hope we have. And so

  94. when we sing I want to see you, we're

  95. going to uh we have that hope that we're

  96. going to hear his voice, literally hear

  97. his voice and see his face. And isn't

  98. that amazing hope that we have?

  99. What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer?

  100. There is no more for heaven now to give.

  101. He is my joy, my righteousness and

  102. freedom.

  103. My steadfast love, my deep and boundless

  104. peace.

  105. To this I hold. My hope is only Jesus.

  106. For my life is wholly bound to his.

  107. Oh, how strange and divine I can see.

  108. All is mighty yet not I, but through

  109. Christ

  110. in me.

  111. The night is dark, but I am not forsen.

  112. For by my side, the Savior He will stay.

  113. I labor on. In weakness and rejoiceing,

  114. for in my need, his power is displayed.

  115. To this I hold. My shepherd will defend

  116. me. Through the deepest

  117. valley he will lead.

  118. Oh, the night has been one and I shall

  119. overcome

  120. yet not I but through Christ in me,

  121. no fate I dread. I know I am forgi

  122. the future sure the price it has been

  123. paid

  124. for Jesus bled and suffered for my part

  125. and he was raised to overthrow the

  126. grave.

  127. To this I hope my sin has been defeated.

  128. Jesus now forever is my plea.

  129. All the chains are released. I can sing.

  130. I am free and not I but through Christ

  131. in me.

  132. With every breath I long to follow

  133. Jesus.

  134. For he has said that he will bring me

  135. home.

  136. And day by day I know he will renew me.

  137. Until I stand with joy before the

  138. throne.

  139. To this I hope. My hope is only Jesus.

  140. All the glory

  141. ever more to him.

  142. When the race is complete, still my lips

  143. shall repeat. Yet not I, but through

  144. Christ

  145. in me.

  146. When the race is complete, still my lips

  147. shall repeat. Yet not I, but through

  148. Christ in me.

  149. Yet not I, but through Christ

  150. in me.

  151. My Jesus,

  152. my savior.

  153. Lord, there is none like you.

  154. All of my days,

  155. I want to praise

  156. the wonders of your mighty

  157. love.

  158. My comfort,

  159. my shelter,

  160. tower of reuge and strength.

  161. Let every breath

  162. all that I am,

  163. never cease to worship

  164. you.

  165. Shout to the Lord all the earth. Let us

  166. sing

  167. power and majesty praise to the king.

  168. Mountains bow down and the seas will

  169. roar at the sound

  170. of your name.

  171. I sing for joy for the work of your

  172. hands.

  173. Forever I'll love you. Forever

  174. I'll stand.

  175. Nothing compares to the promise I have

  176. in you.

  177. Let's sing that chorus one more time.

  178. Shout to the Lord all the earth. Let us

  179. sing.

  180. Power and majesty

  181. praise to the King.

  182. Mountains bow down and the seas will

  183. roar at the sound

  184. of your name.

  185. I sing for joy at the work of your

  186. hands.

  187. Forever I love you forever.

  188. I'll stand.

  189. Nothing compares to the proise I have.

  190. No, nothing compares to the proise I

  191. have.

  192. Oh, nothing compares to the proise I

  193. have in you.

  194. Nothing compares, Lord, to the promises

  195. that we find in your scripture and the

  196. hope that we find there. And especially

  197. in this passage in Philippians as we

  198. read, our hope just lies in you. And so

  199. we press on. We we keep our eyes fixed

  200. on you. We keep moving forward. We

  201. forget the things of the past. We only

  202. remember the things that are victory and

  203. goodness. And it's all pouring into our

  204. walk with you as we move forward in hope

  205. and in joy and in praise. And so that's

  206. what we do. We we shout to you. We love

  207. you. We praise your name, Jesus.

  208. And so be with us this morning. We know

  209. that you are. As we open your word, we

  210. want to be more like you. And so it's in

  211. your name we pray. Amen.

  212. Magic happens when the little green

  213. light turns on.

  214. Welcome to the river.

  215. My name is Rhonda Burchard.

  216. I'm on the teaching team and it is so

  217. good to be together.

  218. We are in lesson 10. If you'd like to

  219. take a few notes, you'll find a place to

  220. do that starting on page 116

  221. of your workbooks.

  222. And I say it is good to be together. And

  223. I mean that sincerely.

  224. It is good to be together.

  225. Raise your hands. How many of you have

  226. talked to people recently who have told

  227. you that they have stopped going to

  228. church in the last few years,

  229. right? I know. Me too.

  230. Unfortunately, it is something that we

  231. hear commonly.

  232. The writer of the book of Hebrews tells

  233. us, "Let us not give up meeting together

  234. as some are in the habit of doing."

  235. Does that surprise you that that's in

  236. the Bible?

  237. Some of us suffer from what's called

  238. recency bias.

  239. We think that is what is happening in

  240. our lifetime has never happened before.

  241. Not true.

  242. People stopped attending church even in

  243. the early church.

  244. Isn't that interesting?

  245. Nothing is new under the sun.

  246. What has always been true is the

  247. importance of showing up. So, good job

  248. showing up.

  249. It is a habit that you're creating,

  250. modeling to your family, and it is a joy

  251. to be together.

  252. Today, we're looking at the second half

  253. of Philippians chapter 3. In the first

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  254. half of Philippians, Paul, the author,

  255. has been teaching us that there's

  256. nothing we can do to be worthy of the

  257. gospel. It is Christ himself who has

  258. done the work on the cross. Our grateful

  259. response to this remarkable truth is to

  260. follow the Lord in humble obedience.

  261. The rest of Philippians chapter 3:12-21

  262. gives us some additional details on how

  263. to do that and we're going to look at

  264. that together today. Let's start with

  265. that now. Not that I have already

  266. obtained this or am already perfect.

  267. Thank you, Paul, for letting us know

  268. right away,

  269. but I press on to make it my own because

  270. Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  271. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider

  272. that I have made it my own. But one

  273. thing I do, forgetting what lies behind

  274. and straining forward to what lies

  275. ahead, I press on toward the goal for

  276. the prize of the upward call of God in

  277. Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are

  278. mature think this way. And if in

  279. anything you think otherwise, God will

  280. reveal that also to you. Only let us

  281. hold true to what we have attained.

  282. Brothers and sisters, join in imitating

  283. me and keep your eyes on those who walk

  284. according to the example you have in us.

  285. For many of whom I have often told you

  286. and now tell you, even with tears, walk

  287. as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  288. Their end is destruction. Their god is

  289. their belly and their glory in shame

  290. with minds set on earthly things.

  291. But our citizenship is in heaven.

  292. And from it we await a savior, the Lord

  293. Jesus Christ, who will transform our

  294. lowly body to be like his glorious body

  295. by the power that enables him even to

  296. subject all things to himself.

  297. I feel like we should say amen.

  298. >> Amen. Okay. So today's outline is

  299. calling, Christ's thinking, and

  300. citizenship.

  301. Calling, we're going to look at verses

  302. 12 and 14. Christ's thinking, verses 15

  303. through 19 and citizenship,

  304. verses 20 and 21.

  305. And here's our key truth. Knowing Christ

  306. and being found in him is the prize.

  307. Knowing Christ and being found in him is

  308. the prize.

  309. Let's start with the first part of our

  310. outline. Calling.

  311. For a number of years, I have been taken

  312. with the idea that following the

  313. brightness of the Christmas narrative in

  314. the Bible, there would have been

  315. darkness.

  316. The Christmas narrative is filled with

  317. the dramatic and breathtaking light. The

  318. star of Bethlehem and the angel choir

  319. surrounded by God's glory. shepherds,

  320. wise men, and gifts. All of this is

  321. bright and shiny and full of wonder.

  322. But following the events of the

  323. Christmas narrative,

  324. the star moved on.

  325. The angels returned to heaven

  326. and everyone went home.

  327. back to work,

  328. back to life, and did their thing.

  329. Raising families,

  330. raising sheep,

  331. working jobs,

  332. living in the community,

  333. kind of like us

  334. in Oregon,

  335. the skies were dark,

  336. kind of like January.

  337. Where is our motivation to keep going in

  338. the dark days of winter?

  339. One thing that keeps us going as

  340. believers is calling.

  341. Let's look at Paul's words in verses 12

  342. through 14.

  343. Not that I have already obtained this or

  344. am already perfect, but I press on to

  345. make it my own because Christ Jesus has

  346. made me his own.

  347. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider

  348. that I have made it my own. But one

  349. thing I do, forgetting what lies behind

  350. and straining forward to what lies

  351. ahead, I press on toward the goal for

  352. the prize of the upward call of God in

  353. Christ Jesus.

  354. The upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  355. What is this upward call?

  356. Good question.

  357. Theologically, we might say there are

  358. two different kinds of callings in the

  359. Bible, general and specific. The general

  360. calling in the Bible is the call of God

  361. to believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior

  362. and to follow his ways in obedience.

  363. In addition to the general calling to

  364. the life and faith and obedience to God,

  365. the Bible gives numerous pictures of

  366. God's calling of people to specific

  367. roles and tasks. Think Moses,

  368. think Mary.

  369. Often these calling scenes are

  370. memorable.

  371. Interestingly, our author Paul's

  372. conversion on the road to Damascus was

  373. both a general call and a specific call.

  374. A general call to salvation in faith to

  375. Christ. A general call and a specific

  376. call to be a chosen instrument of mine

  377. to carry my name before the Gentiles and

  378. kings and children of Israel.

  379. When Paul refers to the upward call in

  380. verse 14, he is talking about a general

  381. calling, believing in Jesus as Lord and

  382. Savior and following him. Paul is

  383. talking about all believers when he uses

  384. this phrase upward call. Here are some

  385. examples of this general call of faith

  386. for all believers using the word calling

  387. from the New Testament that speaks to

  388. God's summoning to a life of faith in

  389. Christ. I think you're going to like

  390. this. This first one is first

    1 Corinthians 1:9

  391. Corinthians 1:9. God is faithful to by

  392. whom you were called into the fellowship

  393. of his son Jesus Christ our Lord.

  394. Colossians 3:15, "And let the peace of

    Colossians 3:15

  395. Christ rule in your hearts to which

  396. indeed you were called in one body, and

  397. be thankful."

  398. 1 Timothy 6:12, "Fight the good fight of

    1 Timothy 6:12

  399. faith. Take hold of the eternal life to

  400. which you were called and about which

  401. you were ma you made the good confession

  402. in the presence of many witnesses.

  403. And I think many of us really like this

  404. one. First Peter 2:9. But you are a

    1 Peter 2:9

  405. chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy

  406. nation, a people for his own possession,

  407. that you may proclaim the excellencies

  408. of him who called you out of darkness

  409. into his marvelous light.

  410. Don't you love those verses about being

  411. called?

  412. That's the general calling.

  413. One author said these calling stories in

  414. the Bible could also be called response

  415. stories

  416. because God does the calling and we do

  417. the responding.

  418. So, how have you responded to God's

  419. calling on your life?

  420. Let me ask you a few questions.

  421. How have you responded to Jesus's call

  422. of salvation?

  423. How have you responded

  424. to God's call

  425. of obedience?

  426. How have you responded

  427. to his call for a step of faith?

  428. As some of you know, I have two

  429. daughters.

  430. I'm going to tell you a story about one

  431. of them, but in order to protect

  432. some anonymity, I'm not going to give

  433. you very many details. And I'm going to

  434. ask you not to ask me any questions. And

  435. if you know who it is, I'm going to ask

  436. you not to talk about it.

  437. One of them had something recently that

  438. I believe God was calling her to do.

  439. My daughter had all of her plans nicely

  440. organized

  441. where she felt comfortable.

  442. And at the last minute, her plans did

  443. not materialize

  444. the way

  445. she felt comfortable.

  446. And she said to me, "I can't go."

  447. And I said to her,

  448. "Honey,

  449. you're going to have to be brave."

  450. And she was.

  451. And she did it.

  452. I don't know your story.

  453. I don't.

  454. But I would encourage you if God is

  455. calling you,

  456. be brave

  457. and respond.

  458. One additional thing I want you to

  459. notice are the words press on and

  460. straining

  461. in this verse. These verses

  462. press on is used twice and straining is

  463. also used. These words indicate intense

  464. effort leading to a goal or to strive

  465. for a purpose. Paul is not saying that

  466. we earn our salvation, but he is saying

  467. that we need to take our faith seriously

  468. with intentionality.

  469. What we are learning here at the river

  470. is so good and so rich. But really, head

  471. knowledge only takes us so far. It's the

  472. application of God's word to our lives

  473. that changes who we are. And that's

  474. where we need to press on as Paul

  475. encourages us.

  476. In Ephesians 4:1, Paul again uses the

    Ephesians 4:1

  477. word calling when he says,"I therefore,

  478. a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to

  479. walk in a manner worthy of the calling

  480. to which you have been called."

  481. From that I took our first truth. Walk

  482. in a manner worthy of the calling to

  483. which you have been called.

  484. Walk in a manner worthy of the calling

  485. to which you have been called.

  486. This is a prayer that I pray personally

  487. often.

  488. May I be worthy, Lord,

  489. of the call that you have called me to.

  490. We've looked at calling. Let's move on

  491. to the next part of our outline,

  492. Christ's thinking. Philippians 3:5-19,

    Philippians 3:5–19

  493. Paul writes, "Let those of us who are

  494. mature think this way, and if in

  495. anything you think otherwise, God will

  496. reveal that also to you. Only let us

  497. hold true to what we have attained."

  498. Brothers and sisters, join in imitating

  499. me and keep your eyes on those who walk

  500. according to the example you have in us.

  501. For many of whom I have often told you

  502. and now tell you even with tears walk as

  503. enemies of the cross of Christ. Their

  504. end is destruction. Their God is their

  505. belly and their glory in their shame

  506. with mindset on earthly things.

  507. In this section, Paul uses the phrase

  508. with mindset set on in verse 19. And

  509. twice in verse 15, he uses the word

  510. think.

  511. As we have learned previously, Paul was

  512. a man of great intellect and education.

  513. And he wants us to use our brains also.

  514. Paul begins with verse 15. Let those of

  515. us who are mature think this way. What

  516. is Paul talking about? What is this way?

  517. Paul wants us to use our minds we have

  518. be we have because we belong to Jesus.

  519. Paul wants us to use the minds we have

  520. in Christ. In other words, Paul wants us

  521. to think like Jesus.

  522. Paul wants us to think like Jesus.

  523. Paul's life had been so transformed by

  524. Jesus that in verse 17, he encourages

  525. the Philippians to imitate him.

  526. He asked them to use his life as an

  527. example on how to live a Christfilled

  528. life.

  529. Paul was very aware that he had a

  530. responsibility to model the Christian

  531. life to new believers.

  532. We also are modeling our lives to the

  533. next generation of believers.

  534. Have you thought about that? That we are

  535. modeling

  536. what it means to live the Christian life

  537. to the next generation of believers.

  538. As some of you know, my mother-in-law,

  539. Died a few months ago. It's still hard

  540. for me to even say those words. It just

  541. feels like it cannot be true.

  542. We had her memorial just this past

  543. Saturday.

  544. It was a beautiful service. She would

  545. have absolutely loved it.

  546. She was a remarkable woman of faith. She

  547. became my spiritual mentor and one of

  548. the greatest blessings of my life. As I

  549. have shared in the past, Kevin and I

  550. struggled with infertility for 14 years.

  551. And we did not live close to his parents

  552. during that time. So I would call D on

  553. the phone many times with many tearful

  554. conversations over those 14 years and

  555. she would listen to me and she would say

  556. many times and I can hear her voice. She

  557. would say, "Honey, I don't know why

  558. you're going through this, but I know

  559. that someday God is going to use it."

  560. She had such faith. She pointed me to

  561. Jesus over and over and over again.

  562. And we always ended our phone calls with

  563. prayer.

  564. She was such a wonderful spiritual

  565. mentor to me.

  566. Later she was thrilled when I discovered

  567. Bible study and we were both delighted

  568. these last past four years to share the

  569. river together. It was such a joy and a

  570. privilege. Um I now have her study books

  571. from the river for the last four years.

  572. Um, it will be a delight for me to read

  573. them. Although, I must say she probably

  574. already shared with me all of her

  575. answers. Um,

  576. but it'll still be special to read all

  577. of them at some point.

  578. Many times over the years, De also told

  579. me stories of her spiritual mentor and

  580. the blessing she had been to her. And

  581. then D became my mentor. Do you see how

  582. the blessing was passed down?

  583. In this week's passage, Paul asked the

  584. Philippians to model their lives after

  585. him. Here is my question.

  586. Who in your life is or could be your

  587. spiritual mentor, your spiritual model?

  588. Who in your family, who in your small

  589. group?

  590. I encourage you to pray about it and

  591. reach out to that person and make a

  592. connection with them.

  593. Keep in mind, it probably won't be a

  594. pastor or a leader. It will likely be

  595. someone in your own circle, someone you

  596. already know, someone who has time to

  597. devote to you. For me, it was my

  598. mother-in-law.

  599. We live in a culture of influencers.

  600. It's so easy to find a Christian

  601. celebrity or a podcaster that we want to

  602. pattern our life after. But it's a

  603. really a better idea to pattern our life

  604. after someone we really know and we can

  605. imitate.

  606. Here's our truth. Believers are called

  607. to imitate the faith of fellow

  608. believers.

  609. Believers are called to imitate the

  610. faith of fellow believers.

  611. Is this surprising to you?

  612. It was to me.

  613. I thought when Paul said, "Imitate me,"

  614. I thought that was just kind of a oneoff

  615. passage. But when I researched it, there

  616. is actually multiple passages that call

  617. us to imitate other believers. Here are

  618. two verses that I thought um were

  619. I were surprising to me. I didn't even

  620. know that they were there. Let's look at

  621. Hebrews 13:7. Remember your leaders,

    Hebrews 13:7

  622. those who spoke to you the word of God.

  623. Consider the outcome of their way of

  624. life and imitate their faith.

  625. I I loved that verse. Here's another

  626. one. 3R John 1:11. Beloved, do not

    John 1:11

  627. imitate evil, but imitate good. Whoever

  628. does good is from God. Whoever does evil

  629. has not seen God. These verses about

  630. imitating were new to me and quite

  631. honestly surprised me. But I think they

  632. are worth thinking about. The idea of

  633. noticing other people in their faith and

  634. imitating that. I think that is a

  635. fascinating thing. Also at DE's service

  636. on Saturday, the pastor encouraged De's

  637. grandchildren, my two children, and also

  638. my niece and nephews to carry on the

  639. tradition of Christian faith. As I

  640. mentioned, we are modeling the Christian

  641. faith to the next generation of

  642. believers. And that is our next truth.

  643. We are modeling our faith to the next

  644. generation of believers. And believe me,

  645. they are watching.

  646. They are watching.

  647. So, we've talked about calling and

  648. Christ's thinking. Let's move on to the

  649. last part of our outline, citizenship.

  650. Paul writes in our last verses, "But our

  651. citizenship is in heaven, and from it we

  652. await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  653. who will transform our lowly body to be

  654. like his glorious body by the power that

  655. enables him to subject all things to

  656. himself."

  657. When Paul says that our citizenship is

  658. in heaven, that means that Jesus will

  659. come from heaven to transform this

  660. world, including us. Verse 21 says, "The

  661. Lord Jesus Christ will transform our

  662. lowly body to be like his glorious

  663. body."

  664. This of course sounds amazing, right?

  665. I know many people who have experienced

  666. physical pain either themselves or

  667. someone they love find this very hopeful

  668. and for others including mine mental

  669. health is what has devastated their

  670. family. So the idea of Christ's return

  671. bringing transformation of not just a

  672. new body but also a new mind is what

  673. actually takes my breath away. The idea

  674. of having family um with a new mind um

  675. is what makes me very hopeful and very

  676. um excited to meet those members of my

  677. family with a new mind. I can't even

  678. imagine. Um that'll be amazing.

  679. The body includes the mind. So if that's

  680. an encouragement to you, um hold on to

  681. that. That's what brings me hope for

  682. sure. And I'm guessing that it might be

  683. for some of you as well. So here is our

  684. final truth. At Christ's return, God

  685. will put all things right. Resurrection,

  686. creation, and justice. At Christ's

  687. return, God will put all things right.

  688. Resurrection, creation, and justice. So,

  689. let me ask you, where do you need hope

  690. that God will indeed someday make things

  691. right?

  692. Where do you need hope that God will

  693. indeed someday make all things right?

  694. How might you need to be reminded that

  695. your citizenship is in heaven and not

  696. here?

  697. How might you need to be reminded that

  698. your citizenship is in heaven and not

  699. here?

  700. Jot down a couple of thoughts on how

  701. your group can pray for you this week.

  702. Let's recount the truths that we've

  703. covered today. Here they are. Walk in a

  704. manner worthy of the calling to which

  705. you have been called.

  706. Believers are called to imitate the

  707. faith of fellow believers.

  708. We are modeling our faith to the next

  709. generation of believers.

  710. And at Christ's return, God will put all

  711. things, resurrection,

  712. creation, and justice. He will put all

  713. things right. And our key truth is

  714. knowing Christ and being found in him is

  715. the prize.

  716. Let's pray.

  717. Thank you, Lord, for loving us. Thank

  718. you for the opportunity to be together

  719. and to learn from you.

  720. Would you help each of us to just take

  721. one thing from today, from this

  722. teaching, from our time togethers in our

  723. group, just to apply it to us, apply it

  724. to our lives, to draw closer to you.

  725. Keep us, Lord, where you can use us. And

  726. as always, Lord, may we be quick to give

  727. you praise for of every good thing. We

  728. love you, Lord. Amen.

  729. Have a great time in your groups.
