  141. A thousand generations

  142. falling down in worship

  143. to sing the song of ages to the land.

  144. And all who've gone before us and all

  145. who will believe

  146. will sing

  147. of a lamb.

  148. Your name is the highest. Your name is

  149. the greatest. Your name

  150. stands above them all.

  151. All thrones and dominions,

  152. all powers and positions. Your name

  153. stands above them all. And the angels

  154. cry.

  155. Holy,

  156. oh creation

  157. Christ,

  158. holy

  159. you are lifted high,

  160. holy,

  161. holy forever.

  162. And if you've been forgiven,

  163. and if you've been redeemed,

  164. sing the song forever to the lamb.

  165. And if you walk in freedom,

  166. and if you bear his name,

  167. sing the song forever to the land.

  168. Oh, we'll sing a song forever and amen.

  169. And the angels cry,

  170. "Holy

  171. creation cries,

  172. holy."

  173. You are lifted high,

  174. holy,

  175. holy forever.

  176. So hear your people sing

  177. holy

  178. to the king of kings.

  179. Holy.

  180. You will always be,

  181. holy,

  182. holy forever.

  183. Your name is the highest. Your name is

  192. All thrones and millions. All powers and

  193. positions your name

  194. stands above them all. And the angels

  195. cry.

  210. holy.

  211. Holy forever.

  212. And so we worship you this morning,

  213. Lord. And you are the one high supreme

  214. God. You're the only one worthy of our

  215. praise.

  216. And so we worship you with all of our

  217. hearts.

  218. We lift you to the highest place. We

  219. bless your name. We praise you. We

  220. magnify you. Would you be magnified in

  221. our lives so that others see you in us?

  222. I want to hear from you today, Lord,

  223. from your word because we would just we

  224. just want to be more like you.

  225. We praise you.

  226. We love you.

  227. It's in Jesus beautiful name that we

  228. pray. Amen.

  229. Welcome to the river. My name is Rhonda

  230. Burchard. I'm on the teaching team and

  231. it's so good to be together. We are on

  232. lesson 15. If you'd like to take a few

  233. notes, you'll find a place to do that

  234. starting on page 178

  235. of your workbooks. Can you believe we're

  236. already on page 178?

  237. Today, we're looking at Colossians 1 15-

  238. 23. In order to have a lens for today,

  239. we're actually going to start with a

  240. verse near the end of today's scripture

  241. passage. Here it is in verse 21. You who

  242. once were alienated and hostile in mind.

  243. That is the translation in our

  244. workbooks, the ESV. The net Bible says,

  245. "You were at one time strangers and

  246. enemies in your minds."

  247. Strangers and enemies, alienated and

  248. hostile. It's all happening in the mind.

  249. Our title for our time together is when

  250. our minds are embattled.

  251. Embattled.

  252. The definition of embattled is involved

  253. in or prepared for war. Especially

  254. because surrounded by enemy forces.

  255. Surrounded by enemy forces

  256. in battled.

  257. I think we can safely say Paul, the

  258. author of the letter to the Colossians,

  259. was embattled.

  260. He was surrounded by enemy forces.

  261. As we know, Paul wrote the letter to the

  262. Colossians from jail and he was put in

  263. jail for preaching Jesus as the risen

  264. Lord. This was seen as a political and

  265. religious challenge to the Roman Empire

  266. and to the Jewish authorities. Remember

  267. when Paul says Jesus is Lord, he is

  268. essentially saying Caesar is not.

  269. And this was considered treasonous. And

  270. because of it, Paul lands in a Roman

  271. jail.

  272. Paul is surrounded by enemies to the

  273. gospel. People who do not like what he

  274. is saying. Paul is embattled with the

  275. Roman Empire and Jewish authorities.

  276. But we also learn in this letter there

  277. is another battle happening in Colasse.

  278. False teachers were coaching the

  279. Colossians to practice mystical

  280. polytheism and follow Jewish rules and

  281. ceremonies in addition to believing in

  282. Jesus.

  283. As we are learning in our study, Paul

  284. corrects the people of Colasse's

  285. thinking through his letter stressing

  286. that faith in Christ is sufficient for

  287. salvation and that nothing needs to be

  288. added to Christ's sacrifice on the

  289. cross.

  290. So, not only is Paul embattled with the

  291. Roman Empire and the Jewish authorities,

  292. Paul is embattled with false teachers

  293. teaching wrong principles about the

  294. gospel and what it means to follow

  295. Jesus.

  296. And in addition to these flesh and blood

  297. battles, Paul tells us that you even

  298. more battles take place in your mind.

  299. you who were once alienated and hostile

  300. in mind.

  301. This is a point that Paul brings out

  302. over and over again in his letters. Paul

  303. regularly encourages his readers to

  304. think

  305. or he speaks of what takes place in the

  306. mind.

  307. Let's look at some examples of this from

  308. Paul's letters. I believe you'll catch

  309. just how important this was to Paul's

  310. understanding about what takes place in

  311. our minds and in our thinking. Romans

    Romans 8:6

  312. 8:6 says, "For to set the mind on the

  313. flesh is death, but to set the mind on

  314. the spirit is life and peace."

  315. Paul is emphasizing what we set our

  316. minds on.

  317. Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to

    Romans 12:2

  318. this world, but be transformed by the

  319. renewal of your mind,

  320. that by testing you may discern what is

  321. the will of God, what is good and

  322. acceptable and perfect."

  323. 1 Corinthians 14:15 reads, "I will pray

    1 Corinthians 14:15

  324. with my spirit. I will pray with my mind

  325. also.

  326. I will sing praise with my spirit, but I

  327. will sing with my mind also.

  328. In Ephesians 2:3, Paul writes, "We all

    Ephesians 2:3

  329. once lived in the passions of our flesh,

  330. carrying out the desires of the body and

  331. the mind."

  332. Let's look again from the letter of

  333. Philippians, which we started our study

  334. with. Philippians 2:5, "Have this mind

    Philippians 2:5

  335. among yourself which is yours in Christ

  336. Jesus." Philippians 3:15, "Let those of

    Philippians 3:15

  337. us who are mature think this way, and if

  338. anything you think otherwise, God will

  339. reveal that also to you."

  340. Philippians 4:8. Finally, brothers and

    Philippians 4:8

  341. sisters, whatever is true, whatever is

  342. honorable, whatever is just, whatever is

  343. pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is

  344. commendable, if there is any excellence,

  345. if there is anything worthy of praise,

  346. think about these things. And once

  347. again, verse 21 in today's passage, you

  348. who were once alienated and hostile in

  349. mind.

  350. Yes, Paul was embattled by other people

  351. who were against his teaching of the

  352. good news of the gospel of Jesus, the

  353. Roman Empire, the Jewish authorities,

  354. and now the false teachers. And yet over

  355. and over again, Paul is focused on our

  356. minds.

  357. and our thinking. Recognizing that much

  358. of our battle is in our own minds,

  359. in our own thinking.

  360. All of Paul's talk about the mind and

  361. thinking, it makes me wonder, was Paul

  362. also embattled in his mind?

  363. Is that why he so often brings his

  364. letters back to the idea of what is

  365. happening in our minds, in our thinking?

  366. Did Paul struggle with his thinking?

  367. Did he have to remind himself to be

  368. aware of his own thoughts and where they

  369. were leading him?

  370. As a teacher here at the river, it is a

  371. joy to share with you what the Lord has

  372. placed on my mind and heart. And to be

  373. honest, before I can stand before you

  374. and teach you, the Lord has to first

  375. teach me.

  376. It is the Lord and I working through

  377. this together before I stand here.

  378. Just me and my Bible and my computer and

  379. the Lord directing my thoughts, my

  380. thinking, my mind, processing God's word

  381. in my mind.

  382. I would imagine it was the same for

  383. Paul. I believe that is why he

  384. repeatedly reminds us about our thinking

  385. and our minds. Because yes, we are

  386. acting out our faith in community with

  387. one another, but much of our faith

  388. processing is done alone

  389. in our own thoughts and our own minds.

  390. And Paul is bringing this to our

  391. attention because I believe it was on

  392. his mind. Also,

  393. let's think for a moment about Paul in

  394. jail.

  395. Yes, he had visitors. We know Paul

  396. learned what was happening in Colasse

  397. from Apapaffris. In the Bible, in the

  398. book of Philippians, we read the name of

  399. multiple people he interacted with while

  400. in jail. But let's be real, they were

  401. not prisoners in jail.

  402. They visited him.

  403. Yes, beautifully. They were faithful to

  404. support Paul, but Paul was the one in

  405. jail. His visitors were able to go home

  406. at night.

  407. I think we can accurately say Paul spent

  408. many hours alone,

  409. in his mind, in his thoughts, with his

  410. thinking.

  411. And I believe Paul wrote so much about

  412. our minds and our thinking because he

  413. was living so much alone in his mind.

  414. In jail, not only would Paul have spent

  415. a lot of time alone, but he would have

  416. been subjected to mental and physical

  417. torture, including having no idea how

  418. long he was going to be there.

  419. One theologian I have come to appreciate

  420. wonders if Paul had come to a place of

  421. despairing in prison

  422. to be without hope.

  423. Paul wrote four letters while in jail.

  424. Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and

  425. Phileiman. These have been called the

  426. prison letters.

  427. The theologian I referred to believes

  428. the four prison letters were written

  429. directly out of Paul's personal struggle

  430. with despair.

  431. Interestingly, in our American culture,

  432. we are spending increased amounts of

  433. time alone.

  434. This has happened since the pandemic.

  435. The trend is driven by increased remote

  436. work, more screen time, and a decline of

  437. in-person socializing.

  438. It is wise for us to pay attention to

  439. Paul's words about what happens in our

  440. thinking and in our minds. They are

  441. perhaps more applicable than ever

  442. because of how much time we spend alone.

  443. Paul understands what it is like when

  444. our minds are embattled. And I believe

  445. that is why Paul reminds us repeatedly

  446. in scripture the importance of our minds

  447. and our thinking. I also believe he

  448. models in this week's passage an answer

  449. for what to do when our minds are

  450. embattled.

  451. And here is our key truth. When your

  452. mind is embattled, speak out loud the

  453. work and attributes of the Lord for

  454. encouragement, peace, and hope.

  455. When your mind is embattled, speak out

  456. loud the work and attributes of the Lord

  457. for encouragement, peace, and hope.

  458. What does it mean to speak out loud the

  459. work and attributes of the Lord? Just

  460. this week, I had a woman in our study

  461. reach out to me. She was overwhelmed

  462. with news that she had learned about a

  463. good friend. We met and she shared the

  464. circumstances that had shaken her. It is

  465. fair to say her mind was embattled.

  466. She was overwhelmed, not sure how to

  467. process what had happened. And in her

  468. text, she wrote to me, "I am a mess."

  469. We met together, and after she shared

  470. what was happening, I had her read a

  471. passage of scripture which highlights

  472. the character of the Lord. I had her

  473. read it out loud and then repeat the

  474. phrases identifying God's character.

  475. Once she clearly had the Lord's

  476. character in mind, then we began to

  477. process the information she had just

  478. received.

  479. Who God is and how he meets us is the

  480. lens from which we viewed her news.

  481. It helped her bring peace to her mind

  482. regarding the difficult situation she

  483. was facing.

  484. Studies have shown that saying things

  485. out loud can help lock it into our brain

  486. and into our memory.

  487. So today's scripture passage can work

  488. the same way to help us when we are

  489. embattled in our minds reminding us of

  490. the truth of the Lord. So today we're

  491. going to cover our passage in three

  492. parts. First, we're going to look at our

  493. encouragement from Colossians 15

  494. 1:15-17.

  495. Then, we're going to look at our peace

  496. in verses 18- 20. And then our hope in

  497. verses 21 through 23. And this will help

  498. us see our key truth. When your mind is

  499. embattled, speak out loud the work and

  500. attributes of the Lord for

  501. encouragement, peace, and hope.

  502. While Paul was in jail, he had a lot of

  503. time to spend in his mind praying and

  504. pondering the ancient biblical text we

  505. now know as the Old Testament. And

  506. during his time in jail, in his mind

  507. thinking, Paul created two beautiful

  508. poems.

  509. We talked about one of them in the

  510. letter to the Philippians, the Christ

  511. hymn in Philippians chapter 2. Now we

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  512. have another poem here in Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  513. chapter 1, a second Christ hymn. It was

  514. in prison that Paul himself fully

  515. understood the value of diving deeply

  516. into scripture and processing it in his

  517. mind and in his thinking. For that is

  518. how Paul emerged from his deep dive and

  519. perhaps his despair

  520. with such majestic poetry.

  521. We find Paul's second Christ hymn, a

  522. poem in verses 15- 20 of Colossians 1.

  523. In his poem, we witness Paul praising

  524. the person and work of Jesus.

  525. While the Christ hymn in the book of

  526. Philippians focused on the servantthood

  527. of Jesus, this Christ hymn in Colossians

  528. focuses on the supremacy of Jesus.

  529. This poem has been called the

  530. centerpiece of chapter 1 and is all

  531. about the crucified and exalted Messiah

  532. Jesus. And just like the Christ hymn in

  533. the letter to the Philippians, this poem

  534. in Colossians 1 expresses what Paul

  535. himself believed about Jesus. Beliefs

  536. that had transformed Paul's life and

  537. once again beliefs that I believe gave

  538. Paul courage to continue preaching the

  539. good news of Jesus.

  540. I believe Paul's poems quite likely are

  541. the thing that brought him out of

  542. despair,

  543. out of his embattled mind.

  544. In some of your translations, this

  545. passage has been types set as poetry

  546. since many scholars regard it as part of

  547. the poetry genre. There are two broad

  548. categor criteria for determining whether

  549. a passage is poetic. It must have number

  550. one a certain rhythmical lilt when the

  551. passage is read aloud

  552. and number two it has to have an unusual

  553. vocabulary particularly the presence of

  554. theological terms which is different

  555. from the surrounding context.

  556. Many scholars believe this poem has

  557. both. And isn't it interesting that one

  558. of the criteria for it to be considered

  559. a poem is that it has to have a

  560. rhythmical lilt when the passage is read

  561. out loud.

  562. Another reason to read out loud. So

  563. let's read this poem of praise together

  564. about Jesus out loud. Here we go.

  565. He is the image of the invisible God,

  566. the firstborn of all creation. For by

  567. him all things were created in heaven

  568. and on earth, visible and invisible,

  569. whether thrones or dominions or rulers

  570. or authorities. All things were created

  571. through him and for him. And he is

  572. before all things and in him all things

  573. hold together. And he is the head of the

  574. body, the church. He is the beginning,

  575. the firstborn from the dead, that in

  576. everything he might be preeminent.

  577. For in him all the fullness of God was

  578. pleased to dwell, and through him to

  579. reconcile to himself all things, whether

  580. on earth or in heaven, making peace by

  581. the blood of his cross.

  582. Amen.

  583. Thank you. So beautiful. This poem is

  584. one you can read out loud to yourself

  585. when your thinking needs to be

  586. realigned.

  587. Say it out loud when your mind gets

  588. overwhelmed or embattled and you need to

  589. be reminded of who Jesus is.

  590. Both this and the Philippians Christ

  591. hymn can be used in this way. So let's

  592. move to the first part of our outline,

  593. our encouragement.

  594. The Colossians Christ hymn is divided

  595. into two stanzas. The first stanza

  596. focuses on how Jesus is the true image

  597. of God. Here is the first stanza. He is

  598. the image of the invisible God, the

  599. firstborn of all creation. For by him

  600. all things were created in heaven and on

  601. earth, visible and invisible, whether

  602. thrones or dominions or rulers or

  603. authorities. All things were created

  604. through him and for him. And he is

  605. before all things and in him all things

  606. hold together.

  607. I love the phrase explaining that Jesus

  608. is the image of the invisible God. We

  609. see this in other places in scripture.

  610. Jesus told his disciples in John 14:9,

    John 14:9

  611. "Whoever has seen me has seen the

  612. father." Jesus also said, "Whoever sees

  613. me sees him who sent me."

  614. Paul captured this same idea in 2

    2 Corinthians 4:4

  615. Corinthians 4:4. The God of this world

  616. has blinded the minds of the unbelievers

  617. to keep them from seeing the light of

  618. the gospel of the glory of Christ who is

  619. the image of God.

  620. Jesus is the image of God. And note

  621. there we have our word again, minds.

  622. Paul reminds us again that so much of

  623. our faith takes place in our mind.

  624. Referring to Jesus as the firstborn of

  625. all creation is a direct link to Psalm

    Psalms 89:27

  626. 89:27.

  627. And I will make him the firstborn, the

  628. highest of the kings of the earth.

  629. Now personally I believe this is where

  630. Paul is preaching to himself before

  631. preaching to others. Paul was embattled

  632. by the Roman Empire, the Jewish

  633. authorities and now false teachers. And

  634. Paul needed to get his thinking, his

  635. mind right.

  636. Who is Jesus again?

  637. Who am I following?

  638. Who am I risking my life for?

  639. Oh yes, it is Jesus, the firstborn of

  640. all creation, the highest of the kings

  641. of the earth, in heaven and on earth,

  642. visible and invisible, whether thrones

  643. or dominions or rulers or authority. Oh

  644. yes, this is the Jesus I follow and

  645. teach.

  646. the one who is above the Roman Empire,

  647. the Jewish authorities, and the false

  648. teachers.

  649. I believe this poem is the result of

  650. Paul getting his thinking and his mind

  651. right

  652. in Ephesians 1:21. Paul wrote, speaking

    Ephesians 1:21

  653. of Jesus, far above all rule and

  654. authority and a power and dominion and

  655. above every name that is named, not only

  656. in this age, but in the one to come.

  657. This is a powerful statement because

  658. when Paul was looking around his jail

  659. cell, this is not what he would have

  660. seen with his physical eyes.

  661. What he could see physically was that he

  662. was in a Roman jail put there by

  663. powerful Roman authorities.

  664. Paul could see local officials proving

  665. their allegiance to Caesar and the

  666. reality of himself being tortured in

  667. prison.

  668. To say Jesus was far above all rule and

  669. authority and power and dominion was to

  670. speak of a world with the mind of faith.

  671. And Paul was asking the Colossians to do

  672. the same because when they looked around

  673. they would have seen clearly the

  674. authority of the Roman Empire.

  675. So let me ask you in your life,

  676. do you need to be reminded that it is

  677. actually Jesus who is the ultimate

  678. authority?

  679. How can you look at your situation and

  680. believe even though to your eyes

  681. things look bleak?

  682. Jesus is still the ultimate power above

  683. every power both human and spiritual.

  684. This takes comparing these truths about

  685. Jesus with our own situation and coming

  686. to that conclusion in our minds.

  687. The last theme covered in this first

  688. part of the poem is the language of

  689. creation.

  690. For by him all things were created and

  691. all things were created through him and

  692. for him. This echoes John 1:3. All

    John 1:3

  693. things were made through him, and

  694. without him was not anything made that

  695. was made. He puts that last sentence

  696. there just so there's no question,

  697. right? Without him there was not

  698. anything made that was made.

  699. Revelation 4:11 exalts Jesus with,

    Revelation 4:11

  700. "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to

  701. receive glory and honor and power, for

  702. you created all things, and by your will

  703. they existed and were created."

  704. One of the remarkable things about God's

  705. creativity

  706. is that he brings order out of chaos.

  707. Genesis 1:2 says, "Before God created

    Genesis 1:2

  708. the earth, earth was without form and

  709. void."

  710. The NASB translates it this way, "The

  711. earth was formless and desolate

  712. emptiness."

  713. Have you ever wondered, or you may have

  714. wondered, why did I call this section of

  715. our outline encouragement?

  716. It is because of this right here.

  717. Let me ask you, where in your life do

  718. you need the Lord's creative power?

  719. In what part of your life do you need

  720. order?

  721. Where are you feeling chaotic,

  722. desolate,

  723. empty?

  724. This, my friends, is where the Lord

  725. Jesus, the creator, does some of his

  726. very best work. Here is our truth for

  727. this section. Be encouraged. The Lord's

  728. creative power is able to bring beauty

  729. and order out of chaos.

  730. Be encouraged. The Lord's creative power

  731. is able to bring beauty and order out of

  732. chaos.

  733. Where do you have chaos in your life?

  734. Where do you need order?

  735. Turn to the Lord and invite him into

  736. your chaos.

  737. Hold on to this verse in Ephesians 3:20.

    Ephesians 3:20

  738. Now to him who is able to do far more

  739. abundantly than all we ask or think

  740. according to the power at work within

  741. us. Doesn't that sound wonderful?

  742. More abundantly than all we ask or

  743. think. Here is where we need to get out

  744. of our heads and ask the Lord to use his

  745. creative power in our lives.

  746. He is waiting for you to ask him.

  747. All right, we've talked about the Lord

  748. as our encouragement. Let's move on to

  749. the next part of our outline. The Lord

  750. as our peace.

  751. You guys are getting me all choked up.

  752. Here in the second stanza of the Christ

  753. hymn, we learn that Jesus brought about

  754. new creation through his resurrection.

  755. Here are the concluding verses of the

  756. Christ hymn. And he is the head of the

  757. body, the church. He is the beginning,

  758. the firstborn from the dead, that in

  759. everything he might be preeminent. For

  760. in him all the fullness of God was

  761. pleased to dwell, and through him to

  762. reconcile to himself all things, whether

  763. on earth or in heaven, making peace by

  764. the blood of his cross.

  765. Paul's poem ends with peace.

  766. The phrase firstborn from the dead means

  767. that Jesus was the first to rise from

  768. the dead.

  769. In the book of Acts, Paul testified

  770. about Jesus, saying, "By being the first

  771. to rise from the dead, he would proclaim

  772. light both to our people and to the

  773. Gentiles."

  774. Jesus rising from the dead is paramount

  775. to Christian faith.

  776. In 1 Corinthians 15:14,

    1 Corinthians 15:14

  777. Paul says, "If Christ has not been

  778. raised, then our preaching is in vain

  779. and your faith is in vain."

  780. Paul is saying, "Without the

  781. resurrection of Jesus, there is no such

  782. thing as Christianity."

  783. Jesus's resurrection then is a key part

  784. of the confession of faith. Paul states

  785. it clearly in Romans 10:9. If you

    Romans 10:9

  786. confess with your mouth that Jesus is

  787. Lord and believe in your heart that God

  788. raised him from the dead, you will be

  789. saved.

  790. Those are important questions.

  791. Do you confess with your mouth that

  792. Jesus is Lord?

  793. Do you believe in your heart that God

  794. raised him from the dead?

  795. That is the path to salvation,

  796. confession and belief.

  797. This confession of faith leads to the

  798. reconciliation with God spoken of in

  799. verse 20 through him to reconcile to

  800. himself.

  801. In the Bible, the term reconciliation

  802. means the restoration of the favor of

  803. God to sinners that repent and put their

  804. trust in the death of Christ.

  805. Let me say that again. Reconciliation

  806. means the restoration of the favor of

  807. God to sinners that repent and put their

  808. trust in the death of Christ.

  809. Where in the Bible do we see this

  810. separation that needs to be reconciled?

  811. Interestingly, we see it all the way

  812. back in the Old Testament. Isaiah 59:2

    Isaiah 59:2

  813. describes it clearly. But your

  814. iniquities, that's another word for sin,

  815. your iniquities have made a separation

  816. between you and God. And your sins have

  817. hidden his face from you so that he does

  818. not hear.

  819. So how do we find this reconciliation

  820. with God identified in verse 20 of the

  821. Christ hymn?

  822. Here is our truth. Repenting of your

  823. sins and accepting Jesus as the

  824. crucified and risen Lord restores your

  825. favor with God and brings peace.

  826. Let me say that again. Repenting of your

  827. sins and accepting Jesus as the

  828. crucified and risen Lord restores your

  829. favor with God and brings peace.

  830. Some of you are new to the river this

  831. year and this talk of faith in Jesus is

  832. also new. Welcome. We're so glad that

  833. you are here.

  834. This right here is how you enter into a

  835. relationship with Jesus.

  836. It is the decision of belief that you

  837. make in your mind which leads to the

  838. declaration of faith.

  839. This is how you begin a relationship

  840. with Jesus.

  841. And that brings us to the end of the

  842. poem, the Colossians Christ him. Let's

  843. read it out loud one more time together.

  844. He is the image of the invisible God,

  845. the firstborn of all creation. For by

  846. him all things were created, in heaven

  847. and on earth, visible and invisible,

  848. whether thrones or dominions or rulers

  849. or authorities. All things were created

  850. through him and for him. And he is

  851. before all things, and in him all things

  852. hold together. And he is the head of the

  853. body, the church. He is the beginning,

  854. the firstborn from the dead, that in

  855. everything he might be preeeminent.

  856. For in him all the fullness of God was

  857. pleased to dwell, and through him to

  858. reconcile to himself all things, whether

  859. on earth or in heaven, making peace by

  860. the blood of his Christ. Wow. Beautiful.

  861. On Sundays at church, we sing of the

  862. Lord's attributes and of his work. And

  863. this poem gives us a way to bring these

  864. declarations into the rest of our week.

  865. Meditate. Think on each line. Say it out

  866. loud and then apply the Lord's

  867. attributes and work to your life. Ask

  868. yourself, "What would it look like in my

  869. life if I actually believed this?

  870. How would it affect my actions and my

  871. thoughts?

  872. That is how Paul wants us to use our

  873. minds.

  874. Okay, we've talked about the Lord as our

  875. encouragement and as our peace. Let's

  876. turn to the last part of our outline,

  877. our hope.

  878. With his poem finished, Paul writes,

  879. "And you who were once alienated and

  880. hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he

  881. has now reconciled in his body of flesh

  882. by his death in order to present you

  883. holy and blameless and above reproach

  884. before him. If indeed you continue in

  885. the faith, stable and steadfast, not

  886. shifting from the hope of the gospel

  887. that you heard, which has been

  888. proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

  889. and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

  890. Our minds have been turned from

  891. hostility to reconciliation and faith in

  892. God. And now Paul urges us to continue

  893. in the faith stable and steadfast not

  894. shifting from the hope of the gospel.

  895. Stable,

  896. steadfast,

  897. not shifting. These are active,

  898. intentional words. But what is Paul

  899. referring to when he says the hope of

  900. the gospel? Paul requ.

  901. I love this. No eye has seen, nor ear

  902. heard, nor heart of man imagined what

  903. God has prepared for those who love him.

  904. Isn't that beautiful? Oh, that sounds

  905. good. And that is what I hope for. No

  906. eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the

  907. heart of man imagined what God has

  908. prepared for those who love him.

  909. Yes, this is the new heavens and the new

  910. earth. But Jesus taught us the kingdom

  911. of God begins now.

  912. We have hope for what God has prepared

  913. for us in the here and now. And this is

  914. our final truth. The hope of Christ is

  915. for now and forever. The hope of Christ

  916. is for now and forever.

  917. Yes, it is true. A relationship with

  918. Jesus offers more than we can imagine

  919. for after we die. And a relationship

  920. with Jesus offers more than we can

  921. imagine in our lives right now.

  922. Here is a quote about hope that I found

  923. helpful. Hope, and I put it on the

  924. slide. Hope is confidence in God whose

  925. goodness and mercy can be relied on and

  926. whose promises cannot fail.

  927. Hope is confidence in God whose goodness

  928. and mercy can be relied on and whose

  929. promises cannot fail.

  930. To experience this hope, Paul calls us

  931. to be stable and steadfast, not shifting

  932. in our faith. This is active,

  933. intentional. It doesn't just happen.

  934. And I believe Paul would say this

  935. stability begins in our minds,

  936. in our thinking.

  937. This is especially true when we are

  938. facing difficulties and battles in life.

  939. So remember our key truth. When your

  940. mind is embattled, speak out loud the

  941. work and attributes of the Lord for

  942. encouragement,

  943. peace, and hope. Let's pray.

  944. God, this is a

  945. lot of theology.

  946. It's a little bit dense as we're out

  947. here in the deep end of the pool.

  948. And yet, that's where the richness is.

  949. That's where the good stuff is.

  950. So Lord, would you give us

  951. strength to persevere,

  952. to find the encouragement, to find the

  953. peace, and to find the hope?

  954. May each person listening today just get

  955. a little bit of one of these

  956. encouragement,

  957. peace,

  958. and hope

  959. in order to

  960. strengthen their faith

  961. and keep bringing their focus back to

  962. you.

  963. So thank you Lord for all you're doing

  964. in our lives. Things that we see and

  965. things we cannot see but we are trusting

  966. that it is true.

  967. And may we be quick Lord to give you

  968. praise for every good thing. We love you

  969. Lord. Amen.

  970. Have a great time in your groups.
