Hearer vs. Doer: Where's Your Faith?

We're going to talk about today, being a doer of the Word of God.

God has called us to be obedient, to be doers of His Word.

But it's why it's so important that we discipline our children and teach them to be doers of what we tell them to do.

Why?

Because that teaches them to be obedient to what their Heavenly Father tells them to do.

Do you want your children to be quick to obey?

Quick, I love when they're quick to obey.

God wants us to be quick to obey, and the way you teach your child to hear from God is you first teach them to hear from you.

And the dad had a hold of his child and they about walked behind a pickup truck, but the dad had him and had his hand.

Stay here, wait.

You want your children to obey?

But the dad had him and had his hand and stay here, wait.

You want your children to obey, not because you want to harm them.

You want to save them, you want to help them.

You tell them hey, don't play ball out in the street.

Oh, you just don't want me to have any fun.

No, I don't want you to get hit by a car.

So when God tells us to do things, it's to bless us, and so I want to look at some things in the scripture today, talking about being a doer of the word.

So let's go first to James, chapter 1.

I'm going to read James, chapter 1, starting in verse 21.

I'm going to read it out of the Passion Translation, just because I really like the way it's worded.

You can read it out of whatever translation you have.

The different translations don't change the meaning, but sometimes I feel there are certain translations that really give a great picture of what God wants us to see.

James, chapter 1, praise the Lord.

Look at this.

So it says so.

This is why we abandon everything morally impure and all forms of wicked conduct.

So what's God asking you to do?

He's asking you to get rid of some of the stuff in your life Morally impure, wicked conduct.

Instead, with a sensitive spirit, god wants you so when you get born again.

You are and we've said this before you are spirit, soul and body.

God is a three-part being.

He is Father, son, holy Spirit.

You are a three-part being.

You are spirit, soul and body.

The real.

You is a spirit that is going to live forever.

You possess a soul, which is your mind, will and emotions, and you live in a body.

We spend a whole lot of time on these bodies, taking care of these bodies, and sometimes we, brother Hagin, used to say it this way you'll give your body three warm meals a day and feed your spirit one cold snack a week, but we are spirits on body.

Your spirit is the eternal part of you.

You get born again.

You get a brand new, recreated spirit, created in the image of God.

Well, we're created in God's image, so we right he's three parts, we're three parts.

And notice, it says here instead with a sensitive spirit.

There's something about teaching yourself and learning, and the more you pray, the more you stay in the Word.

The more you pray in the Spirit, the more sensitive you get to spiritual things.

Having a sensitive spirit is good.

The Bible in fact talks about that.

You can sear your conscience.

You can sear that part where you don't hear as easily.

I remember telling my son, bo, when Bo was little man.

Bo heard from God and I loved it as a parent.

Just, you're like man.

He heard from God and there was a time I've shared this story.

He and I we went to a movie and it wasn't a bad movie.

We were sitting getting ready for the movie.

And he goes Dad, the Holy Spirit just kind of told me there's some stuff in this movie I shouldn't see.

I'm like man.

I look back and I'm like praise God that he knew there was some stuff his little spirit wasn't ready for.

There was another time we were at church camp.

He was in kids' church camp, so he was like 10 years old and he and I were the last ones in the cabin.

And he goes Dad, the Holy Spirit wants me to tell you something.

I go what is it, buddy?

He says the Holy Spirit wanted me to tell you that at times of altar, god wants you to be more bold.

At times at altar time I was like man, thank you.

And so before he left home to go to college, one thing he and his mom and I spoke to him.

I said Bo, you are sensitive in your spirit, you're getting ready to go out into the world.

You need to cultivate that and keep that.

So here it says, instead, with a sensitive spirit, you don't want to be sensitive in your flesh, where just everything upsets you, but in your spirit you want to be able to just be like oh, I hear from God.

In fact, just say this with me Say I hear from God.

Sometimes we just need to convince ourselves.

No, I can hear from God.

You don't just need me to tell you from God.

No, you hear from God.

And sometimes we just need to convince ourselves.

No, I can hear from God, you don't just need me to tell you.

No, you hear from God.

In fact, jesus said this, olive and I she was with me this morning.

Usually I'm driving out of church by myself.

We were driving and we were driving by some places and they had sheep Right.

And the Bible talks a lot about sheep and it likens us as sheep Right.

Sheep need a shepherd and Jesus is our head shepherd.

Pastors are under shepherds, under Jesus.

But what did Jesus say?

He said my sheep, meaning born-again people.

He said my sheep know my voice.

What's that mean?

I've got a sensitive spirit.

I can hear from God.

We need to continue to tell ourselves no, I hear from God.

You get a lot of Christians this way.

I just don't ever hear from God.

I don't feel like God's ever talking to me.

Well, quit saying that.

Start getting your words to line up with God's word.

What did Jesus say?

Jesus said his sheep know his voice.

Well, let me ask you this Are there certain people in your life and granted right, I'm going to be in a younger generation to understand this there used to be a time we had phones that you didn't keep in your pocket, they hung on a wall or they sat on a table.

My kids, especially Olive I don't think we've ever had a landline in Olive's lifetime, maybe when she was little, little Right.

So it's hard for me to grasp that there are people growing up that don't understand Rotary dial and phones hanging on the wall.

Right, because now we have our phone and now when people call, you know who it is.

So you know whether you want to take that call or not.

But there was a time it would go ring, ring and everyone would be sitting at the table and we'd all look at each other and we'd say these words I wonder who it is?

Because you didn't know.

It's this great mystery.

And you'd pick it up, hello, and sometimes the person on the other end would say, hey, it's me.

Right, hey, it's me.

And you knew.

Oh, hey, grandma, you knew why, because what you knew her voice.

Think about this Mothers incubate a child in their womb for nine months or so, and that baby when it's born.

This is the amazing thing about babies when they're born, they ultimately will recognize their parents' voices, their mother or father, because they're talking all the time.

That baby can hear those voices.

Baby recognized that voice and it just does something.

Well, jesus said his sheep know his voice.

So we can be sensitive spiritually to the voice of God in our life.

That means when he says something, I need to see what he's saying.

I need to pause for a moment.

I'm going to be sensitive in my spirit.

I would encourage you on a regular basis, say those words.

I hear from God.

I hear the voice of God.

I can hear when God is speaking to me and I can hear it plainly and clearly when he speaks to me.

Why?

Because I'm one of his children.

I'm born again.

The Holy Spirit lives in my spirit on the inside and he's there to speak.

I'm so thankful for the Holy Spirit because this is a completely different direction than we went first.

Service, you say why are we going this way?

Because someone needs to hear this today.

So I get born again.

The Bible says the Holy Spirit comes to live in my spirit.

He's in there.

How many know he's in there for a reason?

He's not just in there for nothing, right?

We do know he's there as a deposit for what we're going to get when we get to heaven, right, but he's there for a reason.

When Jesus was on this earth, what was Jesus to the disciples?

He was everything.

When he was with the disciples, he was their teacher.

In fact, they called him rab.

He was with the disciples, he was their teacher.

In fact, they called him rabbi, which means teacher.

He was their teacher, he was their guide.

He told them where to go, when to go, what they were doing.

He was everything.

Right, they didn't go places.

Something would happen and they'd go what should we do, jesus?

And Jesus would tell them what to do and then they'd be like, where should we go next, jesus?

And he'd say we're going to go here next.

So he was everything to them.

Just before Jesus died and we see it especially in the gospel of John, john, I think it's like 13, 14, 15, 16, right around there Jesus spends a lot of time with the disciples, teaching them about the Holy Spirit.

In fact, tonight, at Elevate, we're going to talk about the Holy Spirit.

But he teaches a lot about the Holy Spirit and he tells them this about the Holy Spirit he says there's one coming, just like me.

So he says the Holy Spirit's just like me.

A lot of people freak out about the Holy Spirit.

That's weird.

I always tell this story Lucy, our middle child, when she was little, like three.

She'd put a sheet over her head like a little blanket, and walk around the house.

She'd go ooh, I'm the Holy Ghost, preacher's kids, right, right.

But some people you mentioned the Holy Spirit, they're like look, I'm good with God and Jesus, but the Holy Spirit stuff, that's just weird.

Right, anyone grow up and maybe you had those thoughts.

Anyone grow up and maybe you had those thoughts at one point in your life.

You're like some of that spiritual stuff is a little weird.

The tongues, the this, the this.

I don't get it.

Well, the Holy Spirit's as much God as God is, as Jesus was.

He's the same, just he comes in a different form.

And so Jesus said the heavenly father is going to send another comforter, just like me.

So don't be weirded out, right, most Christians.

If you said hey, if Jesus hung out with you, would you be good?

Yeah, I'm good with that.

How about the Holy Spirit?

No, that's why Jesus said he's just like me, he's the same as I am.

What's he going to do?

Jesus said this is what he's going to do in your life.

He's going to teach you things, he's going to guide you, he's going to show you things to come.

He's going to do all these things in your life.

Well, how great would that be to not just have right.

When Jesus was with the disciples, he was those things to them.

But if Jesus was somewhere else, they didn't have a teacher, they didn't have a guide, they didn't have someone to show them things to come.

But now Jesus says here's the best thing about the Holy Spirit he's not just going to be with you, he's going to be in you.

It's like they talk about the future and we didn't understand it back in the day, that you were going to take that phone off the wall and have something that you now have in your pocket.

Well, all the crazy stuff that comes out they talk about.

You know, someday you'll just have a phone.

You'll just be like hello, hang up, right, it'd just be, I'm not getting that.

But right, that's the Holy Spirit.

He's in you To do what?

To teach me, to guide me, to show me things come.

Well, how do I hear?

I hear from God, why?

Because Jesus said his sheep know his voice.

So he's there for a reason.

Right, every born again believer has the Holy Spirit on the inside of them.

You get baptized with the Holy Spirit.

He comes also upon you.

But every born again believer has the Holy Spirit inside of them.

The problem with most Christians is they got him tied up in the basement because they're afraid of what he's going to do if they let him out.

Don't just let him out.

You may dance every once in a while, you may shout every once in a while, you may praise God every once in a while, but just let him out.

Why?

Because he wants to show you, not only teach you, guide you, direct you, but show you things come.

Here's the amazing thing this guide you, direct you, but show you things come.

Here's the amazing thing this little device can guide me to somewhere.

If I put in an address, it will guide me to that.

It doesn't always take the best way.

Those of us who are of a certain age realize sometimes Nicole was going, our daughter Lucy had an event in Springfield.

She was going.

She said put in my phone how to get there and so I look, and it gave three blue lines.

I said you don't want that one?

And in fact I look, and it gave three blue lines.

I said you don't want that one.

And in fact I was looking.

One of the ways.

I'm like that's just dumb.

I'm like why would you even go that way?

And sometimes it'll take you away and you're like that's not the best way to go.

I know the best way to go.

Well, the Holy Spirit won't just guide you somewhere, he'll take you the best way.

Every once in a while, if I have my phone on, it'll say speed trap ahead.

Well, that's nice to know.

I mean, I don't drive real fast, but it's just nice to know.

Stalled car ahead, is it still there?

Yes, well, the Holy Spirit doesn't just know the best way to go, the way to avoid all the trouble, he knows what's in the future.

This thing doesn't know what's in the future, it knows what's in the present or in the past.

But the Holy Spirit can guide you in a way that it knows the future.

That's why you've got to be sensitive in your spirit.

All right, we'll get back to where we're going Instead with a sensitive spirit.

With a sensitive spirit.

We absorb God's Word.

You're supposed to absorb God's Word, which has been implanted within our nature.

You get born again.

You get a brand new nature, for the Word of life has power.

To continually look at this next slide, please.

To continually deliver us.

Now, verse 22.

I like the way it says.

So if you look at James 2, 22, right In, like the New King James.

This is what it says.

We're going to leave this up here, but this is what it says.

It says do you see that faith was working together with his works?

And by works, faith is made perfect.

So here it says don't just listen.

Don't just listen.

Excuse me, that's James 2, james 1, 22.

It says but be doers of the word, not hearers only deceiving yourself.

So very short.

But look at what it says in the Passion.

Don't just listen to the word of truth and not respond to it.

Don't just listen to the word of truth and not respond to it.

That's why, honestly and a lot of people grew up in a church, they didn't do this it's why, honestly, in church, when you hear a word from God, you should respond.

That's what amen or praise the Lord is.

That's you responding to the word.

God is waiting for your response.

You ever speak to someone.

You're waiting for their response.

They're just looking at you like a cow looking at a new gate, right no, god's waiting for your response.

A cow looking at a new gate, right no, god's waiting for your response.

He says don't just listen to the word of truth and not respond to it.

Why?

Because you not responding to the word is what it is the essence of self-deception.

You're deceiving yourself by not responding to the word.

So always, everybody say always, always.

Let his word become like poetry, written and fulfilled by your life.

Right, I'm going to fulfill his word in my life.

But that means I've got to make a choice, to do something.

Right, I'm not just going to be a hearer of the word, I'm going to be a doer of the word.

Last week, we talked about love, right, and the importance of walking in love towards other people, and you could have sat there and been like boy.

That is a really good message.

But if you don't become a doer of that, what good does that message of love do?

None, you hear it and you're like boy.

That's right.

I should walk in love towards my spouse, towards my family, towards the people in my life.

But if you just go back to being a mean old snake all the time, what did that do for you?

Nothing.

Love never fails.

Praise the Lord.

Love never fails.

I don't know why it's not working in my life.

Well, are you a doer of that love?

Are you a doer of the God kind of love?

What is the honest answer to that?

If we're talking 100%?

No, we're not.

Everyone in this room could be better being a doer of the God kind of love.

So let's just keep working towards that.

Why we're getting ready to see there's a blessing that comes from being a doer of the word, not just to hear.

We have to hear right.

Romans 10 says we get saved by hearing the word right, accepting it in our hearts and then confessing it.

So what is that confession?

That's doing what the word says to do.

Verse 23,.

We'll read down through verse 25 here.

If you listen to the word and don't live out the message you hear, if you hear it but don't live it out, you become like a person who looks in the mirror of the Word to discover the reflection of His face.

In the beginning, you perceive how God sees you in the mirror of the Word, but then you go out and you forget your divine origin.

Let's keep it right here just for a moment, okay.

So here's what's interesting.

The Word of God, the Bible, the Word of God is a mirror, but it's not like any other mirror?

Why?

Because any other mirror.

You look in it and it shows you exactly what you currently look like.

But the Bible is a mirror that shows you what you're supposed to look like.

But the Bible, right, is a mirror that shows you what you're supposed to look like.

We men don't care nearly as much about how we look as women.

It's evident by some of us today.

But what if, as a woman?

Oh, I'm currently.

My son is in college, so I currently live in a house with a wife, two daughters and a female dog.

Okay, and the other day I said something to Nicole and she caught me on it.

I said something.

We were out and I said something about some other lady's makeup.

She goes you've been spending too much time with women in the house.

I go what she goes.

You noticed some lady's makeup.

I said it just didn't look right.

It just didn't look right to me.

You start talking about colors and stuff.

It's like, oh, I need to go spend a day with my son, praise the Lord, go out and shoot something, go home and spit or scratch or something.

But right, so what if you, as a woman, you had a mirror and it shows you exactly the color of foundation you're supposed to have the color of rouge I'll use that word because I know it's not what you use anymore.

Right, you looked in it and it was like a paint by numbers and if you did it, you'd look perfect.

How nice would that be.

Well, that's what the Bible is.

It's not just a reflection of who you currently are, it's a reflection of what you're supposed to look like.

And if you'll work to get yourself to line up with that, right, that is your divine origin.

And it says but when you just hear the word and then go out and act like what God said about you isn't true, it says you're just forgetting about all those things God said about you.

He said you're the head, not the tail.

He said you're blessed and not cursed.

He said by his stripes you are healed.

He said all're blessed and not cursed.

He said by his stripes you are healed.

He said all your needs will be met according to his restore through Christ Jesus.

And so if you just go out and act like that word's not true, you're deceiving yourself.

You're forgetting your divine origin, that you got through Jesus Christ.

So how do I keep this in my mind?

You're not just a hearer, you're a doer.

Verse 25,.

We'll finish here and then move on to the next passage.

But it says but those who set their gaze deeply into the perfecting law of liberty are fascinated by and respond to the truth.

They hear and they're strengthened by it.

They experience God's blessing in all that they do.

So where does the one get blessed?

The one who does Right?

Look at in the New King James.

The last sentence there in verse 25 says this one, which one, the one who's not just a hearer of the word but a doer, will be blessed in what he does.

So the problem is a lot of people are waiting to be blessed but they're not doing anything.

Well, the Bible says the blessing comes when you start doing so, when you put your hand to the plow, when you're not just a hearer of that word, but you're a doer of that word.

Well, I'm just waiting for the blessing of God to follow me.

God says, I'm waiting for you to do something, sometimes with my children.

Right, we've told them, hey, we'll buy you this or do this for you if you'll do this.

They're waiting for it to happen.

They're like when's that going to happen?

I said, well, when's that going to happen?

Right, we want to experience God's blessing in our life.

But God says, well, you're not doing anything.

Parked car gets nowhere.

Well, you could have a Rolls Royce.

You could have the most beautiful car, most expensive car.

I was telling Olive the other day, I was watching, I watched these car guys online and they were test driving Rolls Royce SUV.

Okay, so this Rolls Royce SUV and it was all right.

They put all the packages on it and stuff.

I said, olive, how much do you think something like that costs?

She's 11.

I said how much do you think something like that costs?

She's 11.

I said how much do you think something like that costs?

She goes a million dollars.

I said, no, you don't understand the cost of vehicles.

I said you know.

So like this car would be $100,000, this car.

She goes.

Okay, you know.

I said you know you go get a nice Cadillac Escalade like a brand new one, like $120,000.

I said that is a $650,000 SUV.

And you can have a $650,000 SUV.

But if you never drive it, if it never does anything, just sit there and birds poop on it and it gets rained on and everything else doesn't do you any good.

Well, same thing with the word of God.

You can have all this blessing, all this stuff, if you don't ever do anything with it, the blessing will never arrive.

No, I've got to be a doer of His Word.

I'm going to be a doer of His Word.

Romans 2, verse 13.

We're going to roll through some of these scriptures fairly quick.

Listen to what Paul says here as he writes to the church at Rome.

It says For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.

So where does the justification come from?

From those who are doers of what God tells us to do when it talks about the law, remember all the scripture they had at this time.

They didn't have the New Testament written.

They had the law, which was the Old Testament books, the law and the prophets, the Pentateuch first five books of the Bible, then the books of prophecy.

So here it says you want to be justified.

You can't just be a hearer of what God says, you need to be a doer of what God says.

Let's go over to Luke, chapter 11.

In verse 28, we're going to look at some of the words of Jesus talking about doing.

Jesus in Luke 11, 28,.

Jesus in Luke 11, 28, jesus said they're talking about his mother being blessed.

And Jesus says more than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

Other translations say who hear the word of God and do it, or who hear the word of God and act accordingly.

So where does the blessing come from?

Those who hear the word and do it, those who hear the word and do it, those who hear the word and keep it.

Let's go back a couple chapters, to Luke, chapter 8 and verse 19.

Praise the Lord, just stick with me here.

So here again, talking about Jesus' family.

It says Luke 8, 19,.

His mother and brothers came to him and could not approach him because of the crowd and it was told him by some who said your mother and your brothers are standing outside desiring to see you.

But Jesus answered and said to them my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.

How many of you would like to say you're a brother or sister of Christ?

You're in the family of Jesus Christ.

Jesus says you know who's in the family of Jesus Christ those who hear my words and do it.

Right?

Jesus says you know how people are going to know.

We talked about a little last week talking about love.

He said you know how people are going to know you're a believer by how you walk in love, by how you act and see.

You thought people just know you're a believer because you have an I love Jesus bumper sticker.

You wear a what would Jesus do?

Just know you're a believer because you have an I Love Jesus bumper sticker.

You wear a what Would Jesus Do bracelet and you've got a cross pinned it and the Bible says no people are going to know who you serve by how you act, by what you do.

This saying is true that it's more what you do than what you say.

Talked about it last week.

It is not that difficult to look at someone and say I love you.

Right, I could send my wife a text I heart you.

I call her up, say Nicole, I just love you.

But where the rubber meets the road in a relationship, it isn't just in your words.

Your words are important and your words should be full of love and goodness and care, but where the rubber meets the road is in what you do.

How do you act towards that person?

Jesus says look, my mother, my brothers, my family are those who hear my word and do it.

Jesus' first miracle most people know Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine.

He was at a wedding and they had run out of wine and his mother looked at him and said Jesus, they're out of wine.

And Jesus never sinned.

Jesus never was disobedient to his mother.

But he got a little close right here.

He said woman, what business is that of mine?

He got real close, just a little talk back.

But he didn't.

And she said it is your time.

And then she looked at the servants and she said these words I love this.

She said these words.

This is in John, chapter 2, if you want a note, the first, I think, five or six verses.

Mary said these words whatever he says to do, do it.

I've said this numerous times when I talk about this.

Nike did not come up with just do it.

Jesus, or Mary came up with it in John chapter 2.

She said just do it.

Whatever he tells you to do, do it.

So the servants, what's he tell them to do?

He says I want you to go get these big vessels and I want you to go fill them with wine.

No, not wine.

Are we to go down to the neighbors and get wine?

No, he said I want you to fill them with water.

Well, what did they need?

Wine?

What did Jesus tell them?

To fill it up with Water.

You could look at that and say, well, that's not even what we need, but that's exactly what Jesus told them to do.

So where does the blessing come from?

The obedience?

God can tell you to do something and it makes no natural sense and you're just like I'm not doing that, or you're like there's no way.

That's God, because that's not what I need.

Think about this.

God told them to do what with the city Jericho.

He wanted them to take it.

He says that city is yours.

What are we supposed to do?

How are we supposed to get that city?

Sharpen your swords, get your shields.

God says no, I want you to walk around it once a day for six days.

Are we supposed to look angry and mean and tough?

No, just walk around.

You can sing songs, praise me.

Then, the seventh day, I want you to walk around it seven times and at the end of the seventh time I want you to just shout praises to God.

How stupid do you think that seemed to most of those people, especially the men.

We're men, we want to fight.

My wife probably won't watch this part, but Olive and I it's just the two of us at home and so I told her.

I said, hey, you know what would be fun?

I said I was out in the garage the other day.

I found my old BB gun.

What if we just went in the basement and I set up some boxes and stuff?

We shot a little shooting range in the basement.

She goes Dad, we might hit something we're not supposed to hit.

We'll be all right.

She goes.

I don't think we should do that.

So we didn't know.

I said I'm a good shot, I wasn't missing stuff.

But right, we're men, we want to get our sword, we want to get our shield, we want to get after it.

And God says I just want you to walk around and then praise me, shout a shout of faith.

Walls came down, they walked in and took everything.

Whatever he says to do, do it.

There have been times in my life that I needed something to happen in my life.

I needed something seriously to happen in my life and I pray and see God and God tells me to do something and it doesn't make any natural sense.

I don't know if that's God or not.

Well, it doesn't have to make any natural sense.

Where does the blessing come from?

Whatever he says to do, do it.

Amen.

Whatever he says to do, just do that.

Let's go to Luke 6.

Thank you, lord.

We're going to finish up here in Luke 6.

Again, the words of Jesus, verse 46, is where we're going to finish up here in Luke 6.

Listen to what Jesus says.

He says, but why do you call me Lord, lord, and not do the things which I say.

Look at that right there, I know as a Christian, we're like oh Lord, oh Lord, I just love you Lord.

Jesus says quit calling me Lord and not do what I say.

Do you think that would have offended you?

How many people do you think got offended that day?

Just says why do you call me Lord?

Lord, I'm like we love you Jesus, because we love you, jesus goes.

Then why do you not do what I say?

I read that verse in studying this week and I said God forgive me.

I said God forgive me because I've called out to you, lord, lord, and yet there's some things you've spoken to my heart to do and I haven't done them.

I procrastinate.

Most people's disobedience isn't just in open, complete rebellion.

Most people's disobedience isn't just in open, complete rebellion.

Most people's disobedience is in procrastination.

It's in just dragging your feet, honestly.

No, the Bible teaches us to what Be quick to obey.

We need to be quick to obey.

Why do you call me Lord, lord and not do the things I say?

Next verse, verse 47.

Whoever comes to me how many of you want to come to Jesus?

Right, he goes.

You come to me and what happens?

You hear my sayings.

So we get to Jesus.

We hear his sayings.

Go back, please.

And then what Does?

Then he goes.

Let me show you what that person's like, who, the person who comes, who hears and does it.

Let me tell you this is what that person looks like.

Here's the illustration of that person Verse 48.

That person's like a man that builds a house, but they dug it deep.

They dug down deep.

They laid a foundation on the rock, but they dug it deep.

They dug down deep.

They laid a foundation on the rock and when the flood came right and the stream was beating on the house, they couldn't shake it.

Why?

Because it was founded on the rock.

How do you get founded on the rock?

Well, I'm a believer.

I believe in the word no, the believer, the one that's found on the rock, is the one who comes, who hears and does it.

Then my house is built on the rock.

Whose house is on the rock?

The doer.

The doer of the word's house is on the rock, not just the hearer of the word's house.

No, I heard the word no, not just the hearer.

The doer's house is on the rock, but look at what it says verse 49.

But the one who heard it.

So this is interesting because a lot of people think this person is the one who never heard it.

No, jesus said they both heard it.

Both these people heard the word.

One person's house on the rock.

When the storms of life come and the storms of life come for all that house will stand.

Whose house will stand?

The doer, not just the hearer.

The doer, he said the other man heard the word but did nothing.

That person is like a man who built a house on just the ground without a foundation and when the stream came and the rains came and the storms came, it immediately fell and the room of the house was great.

Right, you see all the rubble.

So it's so interesting and there's more scripts this.

But it's so interesting.

It's just like the parable of the sower.

The parable of the sower you could teach for months the parable of the sower.

In the parable of the sower we know it talks about the seed and the seed.

Jesus later explains the parable of the sower says the seed is the word the seed.

Jesus later explains the parable of the sower says the seed is the word the seed was planted in all those places.

Both these people heard the word.

This isn't about someone who never heard the word.

Both these people heard the word.

One person chose to receive it and do it.

The other person chose to receive it.

They didn't reject it to receive it and say I just don't got time for that.

I'm going to do what I want to do.

There are things in my life, that blessings in my life, that are waiting for me to get in line with what God told me to do.

The same is true for you.

There are blessings in your life that are waiting for not God.

Here's what they may say.

So many times we think the blessings are.

We're waiting for God to give the blessing.

God says no, I've already prepared it.

I've already spoke to you.

I just need you to do what I told you to do.

Honestly, it's like getting to the end of a puzzle or getting to the end of like a scavenger hunt.

It's not a hunt.

God doesn't have you searching for nothing.

But God says I'm going to speak something to you and if you'll just do what I tell you to do, the blessing's there.

The blessings aren't waiting for God to send them.

The blessings are waiting for you to get obedient, to become a doer of the word.

Your miracle is waiting for you to get to the place to receive it.

Jesus said no, you want to know what the difference is between these people.

He said the difference is not whether one heard the word or one didn't.

He says they both heard the word.

The difference became and one decided to do what he heard and the other decided not to.

We know at the end of James 2, verse 26,.

James 2:26

We're not going to look at it, but it says faith without works or corresponding action is dead faith.

Too many christians are trying to receive what god has for them and they're using dead faith to do it.

What's dead faith?

Faith that hears right.

Romans 10.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of god.

So we have the faith.

We by the word of God.

So we have the faith.

We heard the word, but it says you got dead faith if you don't become a doer of that word.

There are things in my life that God gave me this message and he really said see if there are some things I've told you to do that you've kind of kicked the can.

I mean again, it's the willing and obedient.

I've been willing but I haven't been obedient in certain areas.

God's waiting for me to get there.

And he said there are things that are waiting for you to get there, and so you have to come to the place where you make a choice or you get so uncomfortable God doesn't ever want you to get to the place of desperation, whereas I'll do it, no matter what you know.

Okay, God, I'll finally do it.

Think about who's a great example of that.

Right, who is a great example of that?

Jonah is a great example of that.

Jonah, God tells him to go preach the word to a certain group of people and he says those people are a bunch of jerks.

I ain't going to preach to them.

I don't like those people.

So he gets on the boat and the storm comes.

They throw him out.

He gets swallowed up by a whale.

Anyone see that video of that kid in the kayak gets swallowed up by a whale recently?

Look it up if you haven't seen it.

It's crazy.

Gets swallowed up by a whale, spends three days and finally he's just in there like this.

Can you imagine being in the belly of a great fish or whale?

I mean just smell and stink and nastiness.

He's in there for three days.

Right, I know I should do it, but I'm not going.

Second day those people need to hear the word, but I'm not going.

I don't like those people.

Finally, the third day, he's like okay, I get it, god, I need to go.

Problem with most Christians myself sometimes is we're just sitting in the belly of a well with all the junk around us and God's just saying I just need you to be obedient.

And as soon as Jonah got willing and obedient, what happened?

God spit up ends up on the shore.

There's the blessing of God.

What was the blessing?

Waiting for His obedience?

What's your blessing?

Waiting for your obedience?

Multiple times in Luke, twice John 13,.

I don't know that we read that John 13, 17,.

Three times we see Jesus himself say these words blessing comes from obedience.

Right again, if you're willing and obedient, you shall eat the goods of the land.

So, wrapping this whole thing up, what are we talking about?

God's just waiting for you to do it.

He's waiting for you to quit making excuses.

Anyone ever make excuses to God.

I just don't have enough time, I don't have the talent, I don't have the skills.

God's waiting for you.

How many know the wine came when, when they got obedient to put the water in first?

See, you're waiting for the wine.

You're waiting to see the finished product.

God's just waiting for you to turn on the spigot and start pouring some water.

Why?

Because the blessing comes when you take your first step of faith.

Now, what?

Now I'm not just a here, right?

What did Peter say when Jesus came walking on the water?

Peter said, jesus, if that's you, tell me and I'll come.

Jesus says it's me come.

Where'd the blessing come?

The miracle come when he took the first step out of the boat?

They were bringing the Ark of the Covenant, the manifest presence of God in the Old Testament.

They were bringing it back to Jerusalem and the priests, the Levites, get to the Jordan River and they went to cross.

And the Bible says in the Old Testament it was at flood stage and they thought, well, we can't cross.

And then all of a sudden they go.

We know God has called us to do this.

Let's just be obedient.

As soon as the first priest put his foot in the flood water, the Jordan River parted and they walked across some dry land.

We're standing looking God has told us to do something.

And we're like, well, look, it's flood.

God, I'd do it if you'd take care of this floodwater.

God, I'd do it if you'd just take care of this issue, god.

If I had more money, I'd step out and do it.

Or if I had more time, I'd step out and do it.

If I had this, I'd step out and do it.

If I had the talent, if I had the skill, if I had this, I'd step out and do it.

God says first step.

Why do most people never take the first step?

It is one word fear.

Fear.

You know what's keeping you from being obedient to certain things God's called you to do in his word Fear.

Fear of what?

That maybe what he told me to do?

It won't work.

Well, first of all, if he said it, it'll work.

Right, it'll happen.

If God said it, we can believe it.

So, at some point, fear of what?

You know what some of my fear has been, with me not stepping out.

And why am I bearing my soul a little bit to you today?

Because I believe this will help some of you what my fear has been?

Not fear of dying, not fear of losing.

You know what it's been Fear of failure, fear of not doing it well, fear of looking silly and doing it.

But it's all fear.

What do we know?

Right, paul wrote Timothy.

He said these words God did not give you a spirit of fear, but of power, right love and of a sound mind.

God didn't give you a spirit of fear.

So what am I going to do?

I'm going to be a doer of his word, not just to hear.

I'm going to close this with a word of prayer.

But you need to make a decision this morning that I'm not just going to be here.

Right, you have to make that decision, god.

Maybe I've been that way, maybe some of you, you've been a doer of 50% of the word that you hear Praise the Lord.

That is right.

That's a start.

Maybe some of you, you've been 80% hearers of the word that you hear.

What's God looking for?

A hundred percent.

You become a hundred percent doer of the word you hear.

Everything changes.

Life gets better.
