[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what brought you up the hill tonight, like Scott said, maybe it was just a come because we're having them on the Thursday and maybe you're not normally here at celebrate, but maybe you maybe you are in any case, whether you're here for the first time or for the hundredth time, I believe this, I believe this with all my heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: There is no coincidence with the Lord.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no happenstance with him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And God is very intentional.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's very intentional with his story of redemption.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's very intentional with our lives.

[SPEAKER_00]: And everything that he does, and every way that he writes the stories that he's writing throughout redemptive history and throughout each one of our days, he's intentional.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so you're here, you're sitting where you're sitting and you were standing where you were standing just now singing, who else is worthy?

[SPEAKER_00]: for her reason and the Lord wanted you to be here and he wanted you your heart to be set upon his son Jesus and have affection for him tonight as we think about his goodness to us this weekend.

[SPEAKER_00]: Good Friday to Easter Sunday.

[SPEAKER_00]: There are seven cups, seven cups present in the passion narrative of Christ and his sufferings.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the hour is from the Passover meal where he ate with his disciples up until his last breath on the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: There are six cups that Jesus drinks and there is one cup that he does not drink.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so for the next few minutes, I just want to walk through.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want to still walk together with Jesus through the last few hours of his life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I want to think about these these seven cups.

[SPEAKER_00]: The first four cups are the cups of the Passover meal.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you know anything about the Passover meal.

[SPEAKER_00]: While the disciples were sitting and having their Passover, the Jews would do this every year as they celebrated what they called a feast of unleavened bread for an entire week and they would sit down and have the Passover meal and at the Passover meal, there were four cups that they would drink, four cups of wine that they would drink throughout the meal.

[SPEAKER_00]: The first cup is called the cup of sanctification.

[SPEAKER_00]: The cup of sanctification

[SPEAKER_00]: is when the people of God remember that God had set them apart.

[SPEAKER_00]: Saintification means to be set apart.

[SPEAKER_00]: They got it set them apart.

[SPEAKER_00]: Shows in Israel as his covenant people set them apart for himself.

[SPEAKER_00]: He would be there.

[SPEAKER_00]: God, they would be his people.

[SPEAKER_00]: Centuries before Jesus, God had chosen a man named Abram.

[SPEAKER_00]: called Abraham Alps Old Abraham go to a land.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will show you it is the land I will give to you and you're the sentence after you and I will bless you with a son and through that son the whole world will be blessed through you and your descendants forever.

[SPEAKER_00]: We know God gave Abraham Isaac Abraham Isaac and gave Isaac Jacob and he saw gave him Jacob.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then Jacob had many sons, and those sons ended up in Egypt as slaves, and so the beginning of the Exodus story starts there as the people of God end up in Egypt as slaves, but God reminds his people, and this is why they would take this first cup, the cup of sanctification as they would take the Passover, they would be reminded that God has not forgotten his promise to them.

[SPEAKER_00]: God has not forgotten his people.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I know there are times in our lives and those times in my life where it feels like and we ask that question, God, have you forgotten me?

[SPEAKER_00]: God, do you see me?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know me?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you care about me?

[SPEAKER_00]: And so there is the second cup.

[SPEAKER_00]: The second cup of the past, so it was called the cup of deliverance, the cup of deliverance.

[SPEAKER_00]: I actually want to read you a passage from the book of Exodus.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a Bible with me, I'm going to be in Matthew 2627, but also Exodus here, if you want to read along with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: But in Exodus chapter three, Moses, the leader of God's people out of Egypt, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: The leader of the Exodus, he meets God.

[SPEAKER_00]: God meets him, rather, in a bush.

[SPEAKER_00]: It says this bush is on fire, but it's not burning.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's a flame in the bush.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not consuming the bush.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so Moses turns aside to see what's going on here.

[SPEAKER_00]: God says to him, the Lord said, Exodus 37, I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt.

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, these first two cups are answering the question, does God see me?

[SPEAKER_00]: Does God hear me?

[SPEAKER_00]: Does God care?

[SPEAKER_00]: So God said to Moses, I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt.

[SPEAKER_00]: I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers and I am concerned about their suffering.

[SPEAKER_00]: God sees, God knows, God understands the suffering of His people.

[SPEAKER_00]: As much as the Exodus and the story of God's great and glorious transcendence is also the story of God's personal and close and intimate immanence with His people.

[SPEAKER_00]: That He is both the high and lifted up glorious wonderful Holy God and the close God.

[SPEAKER_00]: The God of C's, the God of ears, the God of knows, the God of understands and has compassion

[SPEAKER_00]: It is in the story of the Exodus in the past, so over the God reveals not just his name, I am.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's his name.

[SPEAKER_00]: I am a Yahweh, but he also reveals his character to his people that he is a God that is near.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is a God that it sees, a God that hears our afflictions.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he intends, listen, he intends to do something about it.

[SPEAKER_00]: So what he tells Moses.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the third cup of the Passover as they would sit and have this meal would be the cup of redemption.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we're actually going to come back to that cup here and just a little bit, Ali said, just a minute ago, if you haven't gotten a communion cup, because that's the cup of communion.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was actually the cup of redemption was the third cup that they would take during the meal.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll come back to that one at the end.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the fourth cup that they would take at the Passover meal was called the cup of praise.

[SPEAKER_00]: You'll notice as you read through the gospels as Jesus is having this meal with his disciples that says after the meal That's when they take the cup of redemption He issues this this new covenant in his blood, but then it says they sing at him This is the cup of praise.

[SPEAKER_00]: They would sing at him and then they would be done and they would drink that final cup and then they would go out So that's the that's the cup of praise those are the first four cups the cup of sanctification the cup of deliverance the cup of redemption and a cup of praise the fifth cup

[SPEAKER_00]: He's in Matthew 26 and this is the cup of the wrath of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew 26 verse 36.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Jesus after he and his disciples have the Passover meal, you guys know the story if you've been around church for a little while, they they go where Jesus often went to pray when they was around Jerusalem to the Garden of Gassimony.

[SPEAKER_00]: and he took Peter in the two sons of Zabadi with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

[SPEAKER_00]: Then he said to them, my soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, stay here, and keep watch with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Going a little further, he fell with his face to the ground, and he prayed, my father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.

[SPEAKER_00]: yet not as I will, but as you will.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus actually does this three different times, goes back to his disciples, he sees he, told them don't fall asleep, stay awake with me and pray and yet they fall asleep and then he goes back and he prays again the exact same prayer my father.

[SPEAKER_00]: If it is possible, please take this cup from me, yet not as I will, but as you will, goes back to his disciples.

[SPEAKER_00]: Same thing happens, goes back one final time.

[SPEAKER_00]: If it is not possible, let your will be done.

[SPEAKER_00]: We see, I think so clearly in this moment, in the garden, in the garden of Gassimni here with Jesus, both his divinity, he knows the plan and the will of his father for the redemption of humanity.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knows it would be through him.

[SPEAKER_00]: He has agreed to this.

[SPEAKER_00]: From all eternity, he knows what is coming for him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And yet, we see the other side of Christ in this moment, don't we?

[SPEAKER_00]: The humanity of Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: just praying, just afraid.

[SPEAKER_00]: Can we be honest about that?

[SPEAKER_00]: Just afraid in his humanity.

[SPEAKER_00]: Father, I don't want to drink this cup, not this one, not the cup of your wrath.

[SPEAKER_00]: Throughout scripture, especially in the prophets Isaiah Jeremiah, even in Revelation, God's wrath is depicted as a cup poured out.

[SPEAKER_00]: And every time that it's depicted that way, it is a cup of God's wrath poured out against his enemies, poured out against nations that are against him, rebellious, idolatrous.

[SPEAKER_00]: There is really one time in all of scripture that we see a person willingly accepting the cup of the wrath of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: If there is anybody in the universe, I want us to just understand the gravity of this.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's anybody in the universe that understands

[SPEAKER_00]: The immeasurable fury of the wrath of Almighty God upon sin, it's the Son of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knows what He's drinking and He's afraid in His humanity.

[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't want to suffer under the wrath of God, but more than He doesn't want the wrath of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: He does want the will of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it just so happens that is the will of God that he would drink the cup of the wrath of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Isaiah 53 verse 10 tells us that it was the Lord's will to crush him.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's a cause him to suffer.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord's will.

[SPEAKER_00]: This was the plan.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is what was set forward from all time that God would send his son to die on this cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: In that same chapter, verses 45 and 46, Jesus stands up.

[SPEAKER_00]: He goes, he sees his betrayer and the officers coming.

[SPEAKER_00]: And at this moment, there's no more weeping.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no more crying.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no more fear in Jesus' voice at this moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, he just gets his disciples up, he says, here comes my betrayer.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go do this thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I just believe that's the moment where Jesus just makes this resolute mindset of now it is, what it is and we're going to the cross and from that moment on.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we just see this focus in Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: Just this focus in him, the absolute dedication to follow through and to drink this cup to its

[SPEAKER_00]: the wrath of his father.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we know the story.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's arrested.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's a sham of the trial.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's mockery.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's abuse.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's given a crown of thorns to wear on his head dressed in a purple robe.

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, mockery is they pretend to worship him.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a subject to utter embarrassment.

[SPEAKER_00]: Made a public spectacle.

[SPEAKER_00]: Made to carry his own cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: Nailed onto it.

[SPEAKER_00]: and then endure six excruciating hours, suffocating and suffering on the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: All of that physical suffering though, I would say, I believe, pailed in comparison to the crushing weight of the wrath of God pressing upon his soul, every second, as he bore the guilt of the sins of mankind, your sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: Can you imagine the weight?

[SPEAKER_00]: Can you imagine the awful weight

[SPEAKER_00]: of the sins of the world and the wrath of God bearing God.

[SPEAKER_00]: I bet Jesus hardly felt the nails.

[SPEAKER_00]: That was the real pain.

[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing would compare to that.

[SPEAKER_00]: The crushing weight of this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Even more amazing when you consider the sixth cup.

[SPEAKER_00]: The sixth cup.

[SPEAKER_00]: I call the cup of relief.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is the one of the seven.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is the one that he does not drink.

[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew 27, verse 34, says this.

[SPEAKER_00]: There as they get to the place called the skull, Galgotha, the hill where he has crucified.

[SPEAKER_00]: It says there, they offer Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.

[SPEAKER_00]: But after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was common practice back then that sometimes the ladies, actually the ladies of Jerusalem or whatever town that the crucifixion was happening and they would provide a drink at the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: It would be wine like this, mixed probably with gall or some sort of anesteptic type thing that would numb pain.

[SPEAKER_00]: it was it was mercy.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was mercy to those who were dying on a cross that you drink this as your hung up there at the beginning of it and right at the beginning it's there that the wine mixed with the gall they offered to Jesus to drink.

[SPEAKER_00]: He tasted he realizes what it is and he refuses to drink it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Why?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why will you not drink this?

[SPEAKER_00]: He won't drink this because he needed to feel the pain all of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He needed to feel the full range of human suffering.

[SPEAKER_00]: He needed to endure the wrath of God and remain righteous to the end.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it isn't just amazing when we think about our lives.

[SPEAKER_00]: And how much time we spend, how much energy we spend, how much money we spend to not feel pain.

[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's drink or drug,

[SPEAKER_00]: entertainment, money, sex, sleep, food, mere ignorance, we do any number of things that we can do in this life to numb ourselves from feeling something that we don't want to feel.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's just reality.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've done it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will confess it to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've done every one of the things I just

[SPEAKER_00]: to turn away from an end-and-and-and do not best and not feel some pain, not Jesus.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus refused not to feel.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we could truly look to him as our perfect example, our high priest and our spotless sacrifice.

[SPEAKER_00]: And think about this, he needed his whits about him on the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?

[SPEAKER_00]: Like if he had taken that drink, it would have numbed not only his body, but his mind.

[SPEAKER_00]: To the point of not being able to think about what he was doing on the cross and think about as he hangs on the cross There's several things that Jesus continues to do as he hangs on the cross.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he needed to make intercession And so he says father forgive them for their sins He knew that he needed to offer salvation to a thief beside him today You will be with me and paradise.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he was gonna have compassion upon his mother

[SPEAKER_00]: Mom, this is your son, John, John.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is your mother.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew that he needed to experience even the desertion as his father would turn away from him.

[SPEAKER_00]: I got my God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Why have you forsaken me quoting from Psalm 22?

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he had to submit himself to the Father in the end into your hands.

[SPEAKER_00]: I commit my Spirit, and he knew he had to do this to the very completion of it all and so the seventh cup, the cup of completion.

[SPEAKER_00]: John 1929, as Jesus hangs, and he hangs for six hours upon the cross, not numbing the pain, feeling every excruciating second of it, six hours later.

[SPEAKER_00]: It says knowing that all was completed and so that Scripture would be fulfilled and just think about what that says, knowing that everything else was done, but so that Scripture would be fulfilled, he said one more thing, at thirst, the seventh cup.

[SPEAKER_00]: and says that they come and they offer to him sour one.

[SPEAKER_00]: This may have been the same as the first one, but may probably actually a different cup of wine, but in any case there's no time now for it to numb the pain.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's been there for six hours.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's just he's doing this in submission to Psalm 22 15 where it says that the one who suffered with thirst Psalm 69 21 that they would offer him sour wine for his thirst.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew everything else was done, except this one thing, and Jesus Christ refused, absolutely refused to be 99% the Messiah.

[SPEAKER_00]: He would be 100% or he would be nothing.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will thirst and I will say that I'll thirst so that they offer me this drink because it said that I would and I've done everything else.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so he takes the drink.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then John 1930, it is finished and he gives up his spirit, all seven cups, all seven cups, the six that he drank and the one that he did not tell one great story with one great truth that Jesus Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: was absolutely committed to his father's glory and to your good.

[SPEAKER_00]: He was absolutely committed to it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He's still committed to it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He lived and he died to glorify his father.

[SPEAKER_00]: He lived and he died to rescue you and me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And all who call upon his name from sin,

[SPEAKER_00]: and death.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you today right now, I don't know everybody in this room and I don't know what your story is not again.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why you came up the hill tonight.

[SPEAKER_00]: But if you today right now, if you will repent, that means turn from your sin and confess Jesus Christ is Lord and save you, you will be saved.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, tonight, right here today, today's the day of salvation because Jesus has died.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus has drink all seven.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's all six of those scubs and refuse the other to be our savior.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I would just encourage anybody in this room.

[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, if you never made that confession of faith, there's no better day, there's no better time.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no better weekend to make this confession than now today, right here.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you know what, that man, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, I believe in Him, repent to my sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will follow Him, I'd encourage you.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you haven't made that confession, make that confession.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a pastor, talk to your pastor.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a church home, go to your pastor, go to a friend, go to somebody that you trust, tell them about that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Talk to them about that confession.

[SPEAKER_00]: Be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's your step.

[SPEAKER_00]: Just believe in Him.

[SPEAKER_00]: Follow Him, trust in Him.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look, see ours in amazing ministry.

[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever church you go to, I'm sure there's amazing ministries there.

[SPEAKER_00]: Amazing things that go on there.

[SPEAKER_00]: None of that.

[SPEAKER_00]: None of that replaces the gospel that this man

[SPEAKER_00]: and rose again for your eternal salvation, trust in Him.

[SPEAKER_00]: So let's come back to the third cup, the cup of redemption.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you guys can go ahead and if you're taking communion with us tonight, if you are a faithful believer in Jesus, go ahead and grab that communion with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can open it up just hold it for a second.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the cup of redemption, the third cup,

[SPEAKER_00]: Again, this was part of the Passover meal.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a tradition for the Jews to this day.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is a tradition for the Jews.

[SPEAKER_00]: Some of you even do this.

[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe tomorrow night you'll have a Passover meal with friends.

[SPEAKER_00]: As we look back on the book of Exodus and the story of the Exodus.

[SPEAKER_00]: So from Exodus chapter 12, we're God told his people that for generation after generation, after generation, they would observe this ordinance to gather this time of year,

[SPEAKER_00]: And on the past, or if you don't know the story, in Exodus chapter 12, where it's hold, God tells his people, the final plague on Egypt was coming.

[SPEAKER_00]: He had already wreaked havoc upon Egypt with his wrath of nine different plagues, but now the 10th plague was coming, and this would be the plague of all plagues.

[SPEAKER_00]: The destroyer would come through Egypt and he would take the life of the firstborn.

[SPEAKER_00]: But he tells this people this, he says, you take a lamb, a spotless lamb, a pure lamb, or a goat, and you kill it, and you cook it, and you eat it, but you take its blood, and you are to put the blood on the lintel and the crossposts of your doors.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the second thing he tells them in Exodus chapter 12 is this, once you have done that,

[SPEAKER_00]: You do not go outside.

[SPEAKER_00]: You do not cross the blood.

[SPEAKER_00]: You stay behind the blood.

[SPEAKER_00]: Don't ever get in front of it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, if you will do that, you will be safe.

[SPEAKER_00]: And your children will not die.

[SPEAKER_00]: God is offering them with the blood of this lamb.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is offering them protection and provision.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to be in the path of the destroyer and I will protect you, you can't protect yourself the point was you just need to trust me now you need to listen to me that was what he was telling his people listen to me do what I am saying and trust me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so when Jesus was taking this third cup with his disciples, the bread and the cup that they took together and he he makes the statement about remembering him right remembering his sacrifice don't read this to you from Matthew chapter 26.

[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew 26, verse 26, says, while they were eating, Jesus took bread and he gave thanks and he broke it and he gave it to his disciples saying take and he don't don't eat it yet.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to do this in a minute, but I just want to read this to you.

[SPEAKER_00]: He said, take and eat.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is my body.

[SPEAKER_00]: Then he took the cup and he gave thanks again, the cup of redemption, the third cup and he offered it to them.

[SPEAKER_00]: saying, drink from it, all of you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, for hundreds of years up to this point, this would be the moment in the past of it where they would understand this cup that we're now drinking.

[SPEAKER_00]: We are remembering what, the blood of the lamb, the blood of the lamb that was put on the door post of our ancestors, the blood that they would not cross, the blood that protected them from the destroying angel.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then Jesus totally changes the narrative in this moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is mind blowing to those who would have heard it.

[SPEAKER_00]: He says, this is my blood of the covenant.

[SPEAKER_00]: which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

[SPEAKER_00]: I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the day when I drink it a new with you and my father's kingdom.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is making himself synonymous in this moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: It even greater than the Passover lamb.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is

[SPEAKER_00]: pre-emptively telling them and us that the cup or redemption would now be something that they look back on.

[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus hasn't even died on the cross yet in this moment, but he was telling them in that moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to die on the cross and my blood now.

[SPEAKER_00]: My blood will be the blood of the lamb that covers your doors that covers your homes.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood that you do not get in front of.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood that you stay behind.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood that you trust.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood that will give you provision.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood that will give you protection.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's my blood, it's no longer the past over land that we look back on the Exodus.

[SPEAKER_00]: You will look back on me and you will remember me.

[SPEAKER_00]: And this is not freedom from the slavery of Egypt.

[SPEAKER_00]: This would be freedom from the slavery of sin and the curse of death.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is new life in Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he's offering to all who drink this cup with him.

[SPEAKER_00]: that we trust in his blood and so here's what I would love for us to do before we take this together we'll take it together in just a moment let's power heads together.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you'll bow your head with me let's just have a moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: And again, I don't know where you are in your faith.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is that you need to bring to the Lord tonight, but I know if you're like me, you need to bring something to him.
