When God Is Too Good | Pastor Paul McGee

The brothers jealousy kicked in. Why?

Because Joseph's dreams disrupted their comfort, just

like David's anointing disturbed his leader Saul, who was

presently on the throne. Joseph's favor agitated his

brother's insecurity. Shift back for a moment, if you

will, to David. We read verse #5 and this is

what I want you to concentrate on.

Jonathan is pleading with his father Saul, when he says, For

he, Speaking of David, did put his life in his hand and slew

the Philistine. And the Lord wrought a great

salvation for all Israel. Thou solicit, and did his

rejoice. Wherefore wilt thou sin against

innocent blood to slay David without a cause?

Jonathan is telling Saul, Saul who has a a menacing eye at this

moment toward David, who really has murder in his heart toward

David. He has just got some people

together, Amen. In a conspiracy, so to speak,

that says let's kill David, let's take David out.

And Jonathan is calling to memory of Saul this he says

Saul, he said David jeopardized his life by slaying Goliath.

Nobody else would go out to him. Nobody else would say anything.

No one else would approach him. He put his life in his own

hands. When he went to the valley of

Elah, he jeopardized his life. And God gave David the victory.

David, just David just volunteered himself as an

instrument for God to give the victory.

And notice what Jonathan says to his father.

These, these phrases, I believe, are the most important, he says.

Dad, he says you saw it and you rejoiced over it.

In other words, you were just as glad as any other individual in

Israel whenever David took down Goliath.

You were just as happy as any other individual.

You shouted with the crowd whenever he brought down

Goliath. You clapped your hands just as

vigorously as anybody else of Israel whenever he won the

battle against Goliath. From that matter, Dad, after the

battle you brought David into your personal quarters.

You had conversation with him. You talk to him, you even give

gave him a position in the Kingdom after this great defeat.

You celebrated that victory just as much as anybody else.

But Dad, that celebration didn't last long.

Where you once honored David for going to war, now you're seeking

out battles that David can go into, hoping he won't return

from war. You're throwing javelins at him

and Spears at him whenever he comes into your presence.

He you're using him as a target. Watch me now for dealing with

your emotional fallout of having the Kingdom ripped from you, he

says. David is innocent blood and yet

you seek to kill him. You're seeking to kill innocent

blood. You want to snuff out his

innocence. Dad, what changed?

David didn't change. Warren Rigsby says it like this.

David didn't create problems for Saul.

He revealed the deep seated problems that were already

there. Someone say man, everyone loves

David. If you read through Samuel like

chapter 8 and chapters before you read of different ones

characters in the Bible where it plainly says they loved David.

Jonathan, Saul's son, he loved David.

Michael, hey man, his wife, David's wife, she loved David.

The Bible portrays that all of Israel and all of Judah, all of

them loved and adored David. Watch this even in First Samuel

16 and verse 21. Guess what the Scripture says?

Even at one point in his life, the Bible says that Saul loved

David greatly. So where's the rub, Saul?

Where's the rub? When everyone loves this person

and it tells us at least three times even that God is with this

person, then how do we justify Saul's hatred toward him now?

I mean, if you're the only one with a problem with him, is he

the problem? Or have their practice and their

mode of life challenge something in you?

Flip back 1 chapter with me, if you will, the first Samuel

1 Samuel 18 · chapter mention

chapter 18 and verse 7. Because this kind of gives us a

little bird's eye view of maybe where some of the rub has

started. And the Bible says, and the

women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul have

slain his thousands, and David his 10 thousands.

And Saul was very Roth, and the same displeased him.

And he said they have ascribed, and to David 10 thousands, and

to me they have ascribed. But thousands.

And what can we have? But what can he have but more?

But the Kingdom verse 9 and Saul I'd David from that day forward.

There it is. It's the song has changed,

right? One translation says the last

verse verse #9 like this. And from that day forward, Saul

eyed David with suspicion. There's something that happened

not because David changed. Something was happening inside

of Saul that David's life challenged.

Issues, emotions, feelings, pre preconceived ideas inside of

Saul. He went from admiring David to

being aggravated by David. He went from applausing whenever

he had victory over Goliath to now be an accusatory toward

David. He was once joyous just like the

rest of the House of Israel, but now that's turned into jealousy.

David was doing what God anointed him to do, to go out

and to come in, to seize victory, if you will, for the

House of Israel. But Saul did not see it as a

blessing. He saw it as a threat.

And why? Because David was too good to be

safe. In Saul's insecure heart,

someone say, man, the women pray saw for his thousands, David,

his 10 thousands. Listen, folks, these, these

weren't necessarily literal numbers.

These, these aren't like poetic lines.

These are lines, the lyrical lines, sultry type of lines that

are being spoken here. But whenever Saul heard that

song being sung, he took it as a threat.

It doesn't sit well with him. His competitive spirit rises up

in him. It doesn't set well.

But they ascribe 10 thousands to David and only a thousands to

him. He was interpreting and all of

this, here's somebody that's edging in on my turf.

Here's somebody that's trying to get their way, if you will,

trying to get in to where I'm at rather than seeing it for what

it really was. What those words really were,

were the exponential impact that happens when another person

comes alongside you. What are you saying?

You'll remember in Deuteronomy chapter 32 and verse 30, this is

Deuteronomy 32 · chapter mention

a question form in which it is posed.

Bishop is preached on the ages ago How should one chase 1002

put 10,000 to fly? Except their rock had sowed them

and the Lord had shut them up. This is a part of what's known

as the Song of Moses. They're reflecting on the

importance of having God as your rock even during times when

you're disobedient. Thank God you have a God, Moses.

Thank God you have a God as you're wrong.

And he's basically saying that whenever God comes alongside

people, he'll give their addition or that additional perp

what the scripture says, but in through his insecurity as an

affront to who he was someone trying to edge in when what God

was really saying, hey, Saul, there's thousand, but when we

get another man involved, there's 10,000 that can be

conquered. Saul had their own concept.

Saul had the wrong idea. Saul had the wrong perspective.

And so he says in his spirit, let's kill the warrior just as

much as Joseph's brother said, let's kill the dreamer.

Someone being too good begins to reveal stuff in US.

Yeah, we get real with it. We, we in the church world, we

can do it on the level of churches.

We want churches, other churches, you know, we want them

to have revival as long as their revival doesn't eclipse our

revival. We want them to baptize people

and people get the Holy Ghost. But if they do more than we do,

someone say Amen. Maybe you like, maybe you want

somebody to do a good job where you work.

But if it starts doing, doing a little bit more if you and they

get more praise than you do. Then something starts to happen,

right? There's stuff that starts to

happen if it's there in US, and we want to start to criticize

because we don't want anybody to get a leg up on us.

We know they're doing good, but we try to find fault to put them

on our level. Amen.

Someone say glory, so it reveals something inside of us.

Favor is is magnetic. It's just like people are are

drawn to it. It's magnetic.

But favor is also polarizing. You'll cause some separation.

There'll be some drawn to you if there's favor on your life and

other people will be driven crazy because of you if there's

favor on your life. And it's not always what you do,

it's what you're representing. Joseph represented God's

calling. David was representing God's

anointing. Both stood for something.

Listen to me well right here. Here's where the crossroads

come. Both stood for something that

others either lost, lacked, or never pursued.

Let me say that again. What I mean is this the reason

why the brothers had a hard time and the reason why Saul had a

hard time with David. They were dealing with the fact

they had lost some of those things.

Some of them lacked some of those things, others never

pursued. A dream.

Oh yes, someone say Amen. Lord help us.

It's just all these things. And so here's David and Joseph.

They they didn't come, they didn't become dangerous because

they sin. This is amazing to me.

They didn't come to dangerous because they sin.

They became dangerous because they succeeded.

Others were threatened by their success in God.

The coat reminded the brothers that they didn't receive it.

The song that Saul heard reminded him that you know what,

there's somebody else alongside me now, but I feel like he's

taking my place. The dream reminded them that

some of them didn't have faith to believe for what he could see

and when. Favor exposes fear in our hearts

and more importantly, insecurity.

Insecurity, whenever fear exposes that.

When favor exposes that, what oftimes is born is jealousy.

Jealousy. And when that happens, people

don't know how to celebrate you. They want to assassinate you or

you, whoever you're having a problem with.

See, this is what's happening because they're thinking, man,

if I can't beat him, I'll bury him.

That's what happened to Saul. That's what happened to Joseph's

brothers. And if we're not careful, I'm

talking to, I know Apostolic Church going people, we're not

careful. What can happen to us that we'll

see someone succeeded, someone going forward, and jealousy will

rise in our spirit. And all that is doing is

revealing something in us that we need to get to God, to take

care of, that we need to get to God and say, help me with this.

Amen. But for those Davids that are

setting among me tonight, for those Josephs that are setting

among me tonight in this room, you didn't ask for the favor.

You didn't sign up for the dreams.

You're just walking in what God has given you.

And I know sometimes you might feel attacked not because you

failed, but because you tried to do something right.

And everybody says, well, they're compromising in order to

do that. They're cheating in order to,

they're cheating in order to do that.

Well, they're trying to find something.

Oh, but do you know, because they're trying to find something

that will just blackmail what is happening in your life at that

moment. Amen.

But I want to talk to you tonight.

Amen. That if you're walking with God,

that's how you know that this may be something more spiritual

than just something that's natural.

Because I'm telling you tonight, hell doesn't mind it if you're

just average. Hell doesn't mind if you're a

average St. If you're a average prayer

person, average Bible reader, an average worshipper, an average

faster, he doesn't mind if you're average.

But people in hell gets nervous when you carry something

exceptional that's come from the hand of God.

Hey man, someone say Amen. So what I'm saying to the Davids

and the Josephs tonight is this Please, by all means, don't dim

your fire because it makes somebody else uncomfortable.

That's just lingering in the shadows.

Keep on walking, keep on dreaming.

Slay another Goliath if you have to, because there's room enough

for every dream and every calling in the Kingdom, even if

it surpasses my own dream. And my can you hear me?

I'm not standing here today in the bucket trying to pull

everybody with a dream down if their dreams bigger than my

dream, trying to pull everybody with a calling down if they go

somewhere further than I go. No, no, no, let's prop him up.

Let's get jealousy and pride and animosity out of our heart and

let's blow in the cells of those that will dream and those that

will envision. God just might have his hand on

their life. Hey, man, there's another reason

and another response in David's story that will miss if we're

not careful here tonight. And that is Jonathan's response.

Thank God for the Jonathan's because Jonathan didn't feel

threatened by David. He's striking friendship.

He's pulling off his armor, his sword, giving it to David.

He's making covenant. He didn't feel threatened.

He felt connected. He didn't compete with David.

He covenant. He made a covenant with David.

He said David, and this is just Paul McGee terms.

David, I I see the hand of God on your life.

I see what God is doing in all of this.

And David, I'd rather walk beside you than to compete with

you, Brother Reese. If someone started in this

church and they cling better than you did, they cling better

than you did. There's one or two things.

You're either going to say, I want to walk beside you, or

you're going to say they missed a spot.

You understand? Because when someone's too good,

it reveals stuff in US. It happens all time, I think.

I think Bishop JH Osborne, you say years ago he's talking

about, you know, you like if you're taking up offering, we

used to take up or they take up offering sometimes at you know,

conferences who'll give 20 and they go, you know, down the line

and such. It's like, you know, someone

who's going to give $20, someone raise their hand, you know that

one person sitting there all that cheap steak, look over

them. They just even go get just $20

to missions. I can't believe that.

But then it goes past that line to where someone's will give

like 202,000 or saying that person who do they think they

are being a show off like that same person, same person.

Because we live in a day that you either not good enough or

you're too good. Everybody wants to ride the road

of mediocrity, but in the moment, all that's really doing

is revealing something in US. It's revealing something inside

of us. Jonathan didn't feel threatened.

He said I want to, I want to walk alongside you.

Let me tell you something. If you want peace in your life,

surround yourself with some Jonathan's, not Saul's.

Because again, the problem wasn't that David was really too

good. The problem was that Saul's

heart was too small to handle somebody so good.

Someone came in and when your heart small, every success

around you feels like a threat. Oh Jesus, every success feels

like a threat. And in my years experience, I've

come to discover, and not even in my own life sometimes, that

jealousy is just really a sign of unhealed purpose.

Jealousy is a sign of unhealed purpose in my life.

If you stand, I can go and hold you alone.

Someone saying glory, we need to sell peas all the time.

Get rid of them. We get the next ones.

We'll get them out on Sunday too.

And we'll just don't. You start doing that right now.

Here's what I want to do a call to action tonight.

Because sitting in this building, we may have 33

divisions of people. We could have the the Davids and

the Josephs, we could have the Sauls and the brothers, but we

also may have some Jonathan's. And so tonight I want you to

look very introspectively at your life because to the Sauls

and the brothers, that type of heart, that type of mindset, you

may feel jealous. You may feel insecure around

somebody else's blessing or somebody else's favor of what's

going on in their life. And what you need to do tonight,

you need to come to alter and say, God, I need you to heal my

heart. I need you to remove the

comparison game in my life. And I need you to restore a

sense of calling for my own life.

Huh. Saul handled his kingship so

loosely because he got detached from his first call and then he

wants to decapitate the man who is pursuing it.

If you are that tonight, then I say by all means, ask, offer

healing. But if you're a David or if

you're a Joseph, tonight, your heart you.

You've been favored, perhaps of God, and you've been fought

because of that favor of where God's taken you or what's going

on in your life. He's anointed you, he and please

don't apologize that he's done it, huh?

Don't kill it, don't run from it, and don't let insecure

people shame you for what God's doing.

But I believe what we need to do.

Then as David and Joseph says this, we got to say, God

strengthen me to keep the right attitude, to stay strong in my

pursuit, though I'm hearing the voices of those of negativity

and jealousy and insecurity all around me.

But if you're a Jonathan here tonight, we say, here's the fact

of Jonathan. Jonathan.

Jonathan knew although he was stationed in life of being

Saul's son, he should have been the next king.

Jonathan knew that that wasn't to be his role.

And having that understanding, he turned to whom he's seen it

upon and he said, I'm going to help lift him up.

You remember what David said one time to Jonathan?

He said, Jonathan, I would, I would already be dead have it

not been for this step of grace between me and you.

He said in this relationship, this covenant that we made, and

so all the Jonathan's, I would say you just keep on praying,

saying God help me to to protect and promote the purpose that may

be in other people's lives while I'm still trying to find the

purpose in my own life. And don't let me get resentful.

Don't let me get resentful, right folks?

It happens. It happens with churches, it

happens in ministries, it happens in organizations, it can

happen within the church. Someone, I'm not speaking into

existence, but someone could have.

Tonight, while Sister McGee was talking about the different

things that Jen Crews done that may have revealed something in

your spirit. Well, don't she think she's

something really arriving now, stepping it up tall.

We all, we all laughing, we all laughing.

So I'm telling you the truth. He'll start to reveal stuff in

your heart when somebody else gets an accolade or a little oh

God, when good's too good and she's OK.

As long as she just does the clean team, you know, and they

laugh and part of the Becky group and all that good stuff,

that's fine. She's going to start teaching

Sunday school and things. She go take stuff off Sister

Mcgee's play. I tell you what, though, I

caught her the other day, XYZ. She had a little bit of attitude

and let her shine, but don't let her out.

Shine me. And then folks, is this OK?

Is this OK? Bishop, You pull me over, then

we start serving in capacities. And if we ever have anybody else

help you in that or serve in that capacity and move you

somewhere else and you feel like you're being replaced, like,

well, they shouldn't be doing that to me.

That's my job. It starts revealing something in

US. Hey, man, it starts revealing

something in US. God, I want to have a just a

pure heart and I want to have a pure mind.

If, if, if Saul rejoice when David conquered, Jonathan's just

asking why do you want to kill him now we and bow our heads in

this place, God, because I'm convinced tonight we have a good

group of people. Listen, there's a good group of

people in this church, good strong backbone group of people.

And I'm convinced that God wants to place his favor upon

different lives in this assembly tonight.

I think God wants to do that, But he wants the rest of us,

whoever we may be if our time is not now, He wants us to be

trustworthy for the favor. He wants to be able to trust

that, hey, I can put favor on their life and bring them a few

steps forward while they others might be in a holding pattern

right now, but I want them to be able to be trusted with the

favor that I could place on somebody else.

That's their friend, that's their church member, that

they're whatever is we got to ask God tonight.

God deliver me from the fear of being overlooked.

Oh, God, deliver me from the fear of being overlooked.

Deliver me, God, from jealousy. If you don't ever pray about

jealousy in your life, you need to pick it up and do it.

I almost make it a daily part Amen of my prayer that God, that

he would help me with jealousy in my heart.

Because yes, as a pastor, there are things.

Sometimes I catch it. It arises inside of me, Brother

Fred, whenever I get that little feeling about somebody else or

what's happening over there, that little jealous spirit

arrives in my heart. I don't want that because what

it does is it poisons. I don't want that jealousy in my

heart. Hey man, we got to ask.

God, Lord, help us, Lord, to be faithful to what you called us

to help us, God, to be faithful with both of our hands and our

hearts to what you called us to. And help us to be joyful and

celebrate others, God, for what you're doing in their life.

God teach me to celebrate God, everything that you anoint,

everything. God that you appoint God even

when it's not me. The old scripture says we love.

It says to rejoice when others rejoice and to weep when they

weep. One writer said we have a better

time weeping when they weep, then we do rejoicing when they

rejoice. It reveals things in us.

This altar is open tonight for every David, for every Saul,

forever Joseph's brother, for every Joseph, for every

Jonathan. That we could just come and

expose our lives to the Lord and say Lord God I don't want

someones good to be too good for me.

I don't want to be able, Lord Jesus to be supportive and

encouraging Lord Jesus to what you may be doing in others lives

pre adventure, God, what you may be doing, Lord, in my own life

someday, God, I understand Lord how I handle those things and

what arises in me, what emotions, what feelings arise in

me in those moments. Lord is really revealing

something about me. Help me God to be introspective.

Help me God to be introspective. I pray God, Lord, for the

purpose of the overall Kingdom, Lord, the callings that your

Lord disperse, Lord the dreams, God, that you'll displace God

upon the several others. Help us, O God, to rejoice when

it starts, when it begins, and Lord, as it flourishes and

grows, the Lord into further fruition.

God, continue to rejoice. Help us not to be looking to cut

down or cut somebody off, Lord at the knees, God, because maybe

they passed where we were and maybe just because the call in

the desire that they have is greater than ours.

Help us, O God, how to have the right spirit?

Check me, O God, search me, O God and all my heart see if

there be any wicked way in me. Jealousy, pride and in Masati, O
