When the Mantle Becomes the Man | Pastor Paul McGee

Hallelujah. And then typically everybody

goes across the page. The 311 that I fly away might

need to have a more senior elderly game night sometime and

turn it into a bingo that will call out a page number and see

if you can find the name of the song on the square that that

correlates to. Amen.

Those were songs I grew up with. People got the Holy Ghost and

baptized back then too. Every generation, as the songs

may change, they still glorify the same one, and God still does

His. Work.

Isn't he wonderful? Amen.

Amen. We're going to be turned to 2nd

Kings chapter #2 Glad to have each one with you.

Glad to have the the Worth family with us here tonight.

Amen. These folks are precious.

Our families have known each other for years.

I grew up with these guys, Billy and Brad and Brandon and we, I.

I was reminiscing a little bit. Of course, you know, Brad heard

the recent of the passing of their mother and all times went

over there and there was a field that we would play Home Run

Derby. We'd get we'd get wiffle balls

and tape them up with duct tape and, you know, get them a layer

on there. And we would hit and play Home

Run Derby. They had a basketball go and

they're right there behind the house.

It could lower and raise and we thought we were just NBA

specialists and man, Billy would get in there and be dunking and

everything else, you know, doing some Jordan moves, double pumps,

the whole 9 yards. We'd go up in the Brad's room,

Ryan Farrar would come over and we would watch the Cubs lose and

the Cardinals win. But they.

Finally won. They finally won, Brad.

They finally won World Series. But we'd go up there, we'd take

their mattresses off the beds and throw them on the floor and

we'd wrestle till his mom and dad thought we were coming

through the ceiling. That's just what we did then.

And Brandon, that's just what we did.

That's that's pretty good clean fun.

Some great times. We walked for miles, Brother

Brad crossed fields and ditches. I mean, risked our lives, caused

injury to some people's homes during the time of TPN.

They'd leave their doors in lock.

We'd Saran wrap their toilets. It's just the type of fun we

had. Everybody's locking their doors

this October in case pastors on the let's get it back go.

We'll get the team together again, Brad, We're we're all

live. We'll get the team.

It might take us a little longer to go those two miles all

dressed in black. I don't know if that helped.

Amen. Second Kings chapter #2 I mean,

look what the Lord has done. Look what the Lord has done.

wrestling contest. That's one thing I know.

Second Kings chapter #2 verse 11.

Amen. And it came to pass, as they

still went on and talked, that behold, there appeared a chariot

of fire, and horses of fire parted them both asunder.

And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

And Elijah saw it. He cried, My father, my father,

the chariot of Israel, and the horseman thereof.

And he saw him no more, and he took hold of his own clothes and

rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of

Elijah that fell from him, went back and stood by the Bank of

the Jordan. He took the mantle of Elijah

that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is

the Lord God of Elijah? And when he had also had smitten

the waters, they parted hit her and thither Elijah went over

when the sons, the prophets, which were to we could stop

right there. I we.

This is the story of Elijah and Elijah Elijah and then we I know

it's easy to get him confused right.

Always remember that the J comes before the S Elijah Elijah.

That's a little mnemonic device for you in the alphabet.

J comes before S helping you out.

If you didn't learn your alphabet, then you'll be in

trouble. But none the less, Elijah was to

be a kind of an understudy of Elijah.

So it came up on this moment that Elijah didn't, he didn't

see that, but he was taken away. Mantle fell.

Elijah picked it up. I want to talk just a little

while on this subject. When the mantle becomes the man.

When the mantle becomes the man, Amen.

Can we ask the Lord to help us? I know we laughed and I love to

laugh and have fun, but when we ask the Lord to help us in the

next little while, Father, we love you and we appreciate you

today. God, we're so thankful, Lord for

the songs. We're thankful, Lord, for the

people that are gathered here, the Lord friends, the Lord Jesus

from long ago. We pray God, touch all of our

hearts anew and the fresh. Thank you, Lord, for our guests,

the Lord, we appreciate them. God, and those members of this

church, God the faithfully Lord, come and show up.

God bless them. Help us tonight through your

word, God, you'd instill something in US will fail not to

thank you for it in the lovely name of Jesus Christ that I pray

Amen, the church say Amen, Amen. God bless you tonight in Jesus

name in biblical times to the characters of the Old Testament

in the New Testament for that matter, clothing to them is not

like clothing to us today. What I mean is they didn't have

walk in closets. All right, Let me tell you the

situation of today. The situation of today is that

you can go to a Goodwill or a yard sale and you can buy

clothing that still has the tags on it because somebody has so

many clothes that they never even wore the clothes that they

had. And so you, you, you, you get

stuck with tags still on it whenever even it's used.

But in biblical times, that's, that's not the way it was.

Clothing to them was very, very expensive.

It wasn't cheap. It, it wasn't disposable.

He wasn't throwing clothing away.

You're going to, you're going to mend it.

You're going to do whatever necessary if it got a hole in it

in order to preserve it. As a matter of fact, the Bible

talks in one place later in Scripture from now that Naaman

who had been healed of leprosy, that he even offered to give

Elisha some changes of garments as a gift.

So that just goes to show you then that the importance of of

clothing that that would be something that would instead of

money, I'm going to give you some clothes.

And I know some people would still love some clothes.

Sister Sheila wouldn't mind to get some clothes as a gift even

still yet today, but but just to point out Samson even to the

book of Judges it it tells us how he promised the men that if

you can tell me the solution to the Riddle that I I given to

you. Then I will.

Give you changes of garments and there were thirty of those men

and so and they're like, yeah, we're going to seek out and find

out what the answer to this is. Because again, clothing was

scarce, was scarce in their day. So to get that would have been

tremendous. People only just had typically a

few items, a few pieces mind you, even mainly 2 layers of

clothing that they own to their. Life they they had an.

Inner garment that sometimes was called a, a loincloth brother

pat that kind of went from the waist to their knees or they had

a tunic that was that undergarment that that that

covered them that was made of light material like like linen.

And they also then had an outer garment that they wore as well

that many times was made of sheepskin or wool, something a

little heavier to be able to weather the elements of whatever

took place. So they would have one inner

garment that that was real intimate and it was close to

their skin. It laid upon their skin and.

That other outer garment that. That just laid against that that

inner garment and it provided warmth for them and it it

provided a sense of modesty for them.

And sometimes the Bible even says the importance of their

outer. Garment was that they would.

Even use that as a blanket for themselves at night.

So just underscoring the importance and the significance

of them. Jesus even said our Scripture,

mind you, says in the book of Exodus that sometimes a man

would give his outer garment as as a pledge if he borrowed

something from someone. But that was so important.

The Bible made law that if a man gave you his outer garment as a

pledge and night was coming, that you should at least give it

back to him for his blanket at night because that that's all

the man has. And so it's just the importance

of it. And so while the inner garments

are very and touch the skin. The outer.

Garment was, was very public, right?

It's what people saw. It's what they recognized.

It's what they recognized you by.

And so with this picture in mind, I want you to consider

Elijah, Because whenever Elijah and and the horses and the

Chariots of fire, as the scripture says, came and took

him up into the heavenlies, the Bible tells us that Elijah took

hold of his own. Clothes.

And he tore them. Into pieces and the Bible says

that he took up the mantle of Elijah of Elijah rather and I'll

probably do that more than once because it's very easy to turn

them around. But when we see this this this

is more and I want to indicate this to you tonight.

This this is more than just a man that is rendering rending

his clothes because he's lamenting over the loss of his

mentor. He's just grieving over the loss

of Elijah being taken up into the heavens.

There's there's something more than just a picture of reef or

mourning that's taking place here, a little bit deeper than

just tearing the fabric. He he's literally, if we could

say like this, he is tearing away his identity.

What people would recognize him by that outer garment?

And so before we dive. Though into this Elisha story, I

want you to remember something that that transferring garments

in scripture is not just something that we see in the

Book of Kings. We see this in other places, a

scripture where people transferred garments.

The Bible. Speaks of Jonathan and David,

that they had a relationship unlike any other.

The Bible says that Jonathan and David's soul was knit, that they

they had a love for one another, appreciation of of chums if you

will, and friendship between one another and Jonathan.

At one point in their their friendship, the Bible says that

he gave unto David. He gave him his robe and he gave

him his armor and he gave him his sword and, and that was all

because of a covenant that him and his friend was making.

I I got your back. I'm going to watch after you.

You got my back. I'm going to watch.

Over you. And so David gave him his robe.

I believe it even goes even greater than that, that Jonathan

understood that. David would be the next king,

although his dad Saul was king at that moment.

I believe he knew what. What was happening?

What was taking place? So he was given that.

Those identifying. Marks of Of a kingly son.

Amen unto David. And then we read in.

Scripture. That Joseph as a young.

Boy, his father made him this great coat of many colors that

we all heard. If you grew up in church, you

heard the story in Sunday school class and his dad gave him that

and his brother stripped him of that.

And Joseph got a lot of different clothes through the

process of time all. Indicating his status, all

indicating his. His identity, he he had certain

clothing that he had on when he served in Potiphar's court and

and the Bible says that Potiphar's wife got a hold.

Of his garment. And it was the thing that she

used to lie on him with, right? And the Bible tells us when he.

Finally became second command in Pharaoh's house.

That he also got some. Garments and there was some

attire that was placed upon him, indicating his his process, his

status, his identity. Through all of that, we.

Reading Scripture. You.

You just bear with me. We're going somewhere.

Reading scripture. About Aaron, the high priest

that he would even pass. Down garments that he had.

To his sons and place upon them as a sign of succession.

And so we have these different transference if you will

transferring of garments from one person to the other person.

Some of them symbolizing a covenant like Jonathan and

David. Others identity no doubt, like

with Joseph and and position. Amen.

Like with Aaron in his sons. But here's the amazing thing.

Concerning these these garments. Typically were just.

Added to what they already had, they were just an additional

garment or we might even say additional layer to the garments

that they wore. They were just something that

were. Given to them that.

They already had. What are you saying?

I'm saying although Jonathan gave David a row, we, we.

Read nowhere in scripture. That he got rid of.

His shepherds cloak or his shepherd's garment.

Josh Joshua, of course, lost some different garments, but he

still has the other garment of his loincloth or his tunic that

is there underneath. Same likewise with Aaron's son.

So, so there's this transference of of a garment.

Amen. It's very symbolical for all of

these in mind, but but there's not anything that's just totally

absolute because it's just an additional.

Article of clothing that now. Comes into their possession, but

there's something different. Whenever you look.

At this transference in the Bible of second Kings chapter #2

when you. Look at Elijah again when.

Elijah is taking up in the whirlwind and the.

Bible describes that Elijah. 'S mantle fail from him.

Elijah could. Have Sister Grace very simply

picked up the mantle and. Added that to his wardrobe could

have very simply picked that he could even.

Harness that on his shoulders. To be the outward layer, if you

will, of the garments that he already had on his body for that

matter, that would have been very normal.

For him to do. That would have been the the,

the the very natural. Thing for him to do, just add an

additional layer. To have a visible emblem of his

old. Mentor prophet upon his life.

But Elijah does something quite different than just adding a

piece of clothing to his. Wardrobe, the Bible tells us.

Purposefully. That he tears his own.

Clothes into pieces. And the reason why that's

important tonight, and it might seem a little radical to us,

Brother Reese. I mean.

Do I rent any? Garments when they're scarce,

right? Why won't?

You just add that one to the closet.

But he rents that it's. Radical because this is the same

man, Elijah, that whenever that mantle was first thrown on his

shoulders by Elijah, he went and he sacrificed the auction he was

plowing with, and he tore up the wooden plow.

He was. Plowing with and he made a

sacrifice to God. To minister unto.

Elijah and do what he could. So this thing's radical, but

this, this. Is just the.

Fingerprint of Elijah he was radical with the auction and

with the plow and now he's rending all of his garments Amen

because he plans on Amen following a pattern and a life

Amen that Elijah had and it's important because the Bible

doesn't just. Indicate to us as though.

He tore his outer garment, but he tore his plural, his clothes.

He's tearing outer garment and he's.

Tearing inner garment. He's tearing both.

He's destroying them, rending them into pieces, both of them.

And listen, why would you want to tear that inner garment or

outer garment? When did that day you typically

only had one outer garment and one inner garment.

Someone say man, he's. Tearing them when he tears them.

Sister Sheila, you know what that means.

I don't have anything to wear. I know you ladies say that, but

Elijah could literally say I don't have anything to wear.

This is rendered. This is tore in two pieces.

Hey, man. He didn't have anything to wear

unless he put on what he picked up.

I've rendered my outer garment and my inner garment useless.

There is a rent here. It it is visible.

I've torn, if you will, what everybody used to recognize me

by. I've separated that.

I've parted that the only way I can be clothed if I put on what

was left behind. The mantle, then, that Elijah.

Pick up isn't just an addition then.

To what? To what?

He already. Had but there is a.

True transference. It's a instead of what I.

Used to have Elijah's not putting on Elijah's mantle.

And just adding to a layer of his identity, he's making that

mantle his identity. I just stay.

Here's the fact of the matter. Before Elijah's mantle ever

touched Elijah's shoulders, Elijah in his day would have

wore just a typical mantle, typical cloak, a farmer's cloak

of his day, probably main of some plain wool.

Rough. Material because he's working

around the animals and farming instrumentation.

Nothing fancy, nothing that would really set him apart from

any other farmer of his day. It kept him though warm at night

and. He appreciated that it shaded

him in the. Heat, if he needed that.

It was a garment of survival. It was just an.

Ordinary garment. Of his day, but when?

Elijah's mantle fell. Elijah tore that old cloak in

two. Notice he didn't fold it up and.

Put it away for storage. And let me use modern day

language. He didn't put it on a hanger,

put mothballs in it back in. The closet say I'll wear that

again someday. He.

Didn't do none of that. He, in essence, destroyed it.

Why? Because that was the.

Cloak of a farmer. And God had now.

Called him to be a. Prophet That was the cloak of

his life, that he. Once.

Knew that of a common man. But now God had a calling of his

life that was a little higher than what he formerly knew.

He had a mantle, the call of God.

Was upon his life. So whenever he put on Elijah's

mantle, it just just wasn't a change of fabric, it was a

change of life. He's not behind the auction now.

He's not plowing with a plow now.

There is something new. This is a new season, this is a

new direction. This is a new purpose for his

life. He's not clothed like every

other farmer. Amen in the field now.

Now he has on the distinctive garment of a prophet of God.

Before he looked like every every other farming man in

Israel, but now he looked like God's man.

God's called me. Hey, Ben.

I'm not done here. It's a gospel picture, if you

think. About it the Bible tells us in

Ephesians 4 to put off the old man and put on the new man.

Which is after God and is creating the.

Righteousness and true holiness, He.

Told us again as we. Said this morning as many.

Have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ.

But Elijah, he's not adding on to this mantle, but he's rending

the old and he's adopting. The new Let me state in these

terms, he was. Doing away with the options.

He's. For Alex, I might need your your

mantle. He's doing.

Take it off. That's translation.

Take it off. He's.

Doing away with the options. Here's and.

This is much nicer. OK.

But this is my. Farmer's Mantle.

This is the profits mantle. He's doing away with the.

Options. He's not leaving.

Himself in the condition What will I be today?

I think I'll. Just be the.

Calm and ordinary I'll be. Who everybody knew me to be

today. Oh, different sort of week.

I'll be the prophet today. I'll be the man of God.

Somebody help me here. I can even clothe myself. 47

years old and I can't clothe. Myself, the Prophet today.

He reigns the old man. Mantle.

Because he's not leaving himself open to any other option then

what God has now called him to be.

Brother Trout. It would do us well in some

essences to burn some bridges, rinse some garments so that

every morning I wake up, I'm going to be what he called me to

be. I'm going to identify myself

with the purpose he's called. Me to keep your mantle there and

then sometimes we operate like this everybody OK.

By commonality. Old self.

And lot in life close because this is what everybody

sees. But right underneath that layer

is my old man layer. I keep that.

Close to my heart. But I'll let the public.

Display be. What I've been called today.

Elijah's not adding a layer to his identity.

He's assuming a whole nother identity.

Oh God. I don't want people try to

figure out are they talking to the old Paul or the new Paul?

Is this the preacher, Paul? Or is this the?

Well, it's all according to what garment I want to show you.

I won't be able to preach with this on loan because I'll become

a pile of water. Come on, come on, mantels.

They were more than fabric in the Testaments.

They symbolize calling, divine summons of God, priest and

prophets and leaders many times had a mantle that distinguished

them as and what they led it. It signified their authority

that God-given that weighty heavenly responsibility of

authority that have been given to them, those.

Oh. Prophets and priests, there's a

significance of anointing Amen that's viewed just in that outer

garment. Of their mantle what was?

Resting on their shoulders was something that was resting upon

their. Soul in their life.

And so for Elijah, this mantle was not just.

A covering Amen. It was now his soul.

Only one piece article of clothing.

Amen. That he.

Had Amen. It didn't just.

Rest outwardly. Amen.

Watch me here. But it touched his skin.

If this gets sweaty I'll get it dry cleaned.

He tore his clothes. Outer and inner see.

This differs now from the old outer.

Garment he used to have. The old outer garment everybody

could see, but it rested against a inner garment as a.

Barrier to his flesh. But now he's rent all of that

inside and outside and what he wears that people sees now makes

an impression on his life, someone say.

Amen to the tension of the whole situation is this whereas

throughout Scripture we had all these mantels Amen and they

they. Served as emblems.

Amen to. Those who would.

See the people. Wear them and would distinguish

them as whatever role they served in whatever.

Authority they had whatever anointing that they had, and it

was just. Something that seemed like they.

Added to their lives or they wore on top, even inner.

Garments that they had against their flesh, they.

It was just a little badge, a little layer, a little title.

I got to get out of this. Here's the thing though,

sometimes you can wear a mantle without having the character of

what you're identifying by. The Bible tells, it seems like

we not talked about it long ago, that Saul, look, he went in.

The Bible says that one particular time, and I touched

on this story not long ago in the sermon, but he went to the

witch of Endora wanting to bring up Samuel.

The Bible says that he went in and to the witch Saul is a king.

He has outer garments that distinguishes and denotes he's a

king, but he goes in before the witch and the Bible says he

disguises himself, and all he had to do to disguise his self

is change his outer garment, meaning his outer garment said

one thing, but the characterization of who he was

was different than what he wore on the exterior.

Amen. The Bible even tells us in

another place that Ahab and Jehoshaphat went into battle.

They were kings going into battle and that the, the, the

the the opposing forces said don't fight with anyone except

the king. And the Bible says as a result

of this, Ahab goes into the battle not in his kingly battle

attire, but again he disguises himself.

And Jehoshaphat almost got. Killed thinking that he was the

king because he out on kingly attire.

Just the wrong king. And so this, this, this

disguising was just so people would think they were something.

Other than they were. Say man, but Elijah.

In this. Episode of this story.

He is conveying to us, by the way, that he's.

Wearing it. And what it is touching that

what he has on here is not just a emblem, but it's a embodiment.

In other words, Elijah Sam, I'm not wearing this.

Over top my old mantle. I'm not wearing.

This over top my. Own my old life.

No, I'm renting the old and I'm putting on the new and it's

there's gotten to be no barrier between it and my flesh in my

life. It's I wanted to touch my flesh.

I wanted to impact. I want to fit my God, I want to

we we we got to stop putting Amen what God has called us to

overtop other layers of things of our past.

If you want to feel it in your life, if you want to feel it in

your life, you got to let it lay against your life without any

barrier it's. Got a not any barrier, he says.

I'm not, I'm not going to do that.

No, no, no. This is embodiment.

I just don't want to. Showcase this Amen something and

I'm not no. I'm I'm going to embrace this.

This is who I am becoming. This is who I am.

It's not a layer. Hey man, I'm not putting.

It on top of the. Ambitions I used to have.

I'm not putting it upon the comfort level.

No, I wanted to make me uncomfortable.

I want to feel that wool I've rented them into.

Pieces so I'm. Going to be white.

Covering in my life. And that'll be the covering of

my call. God is purpose for me.

I mean this, this is not a Letterman jacket to Elijah.

He played band and was an athlete, so you know, athletics.

And no, no, this is not a ministry jacket for him.

It's his identity. It touched his body, it touched

his life. Someone say man, why is that

important? Because Elisha would know in his

ministry as he go forward what God was calling him too that he

couldn't show. The world that he was.

Living in, he couldn't showcase something.

Please listen to me very carefully.

He couldn't showcase something to the world that he lived in

that hadn't touched him first. He knew his effectiveness.

When they say, oh, there's the Prophet.

No, he says. I need this as a garment.

That's. Inside, it's my.

Inside and my outside Garment it's.

It's my inside and my. Outside garment, I don't want

the change just to be a perception for others and not.

Be a reality on the. Inside.

No, no, no. It's going to affect.

Both areas. The inside and the outside,

it'll be something very private and intimate, but it's going to

be something public as well. But there's known to be no

variance between the inside and the outside.

It's it's going to be stable. It's going to have the same

voice, the same feel, the same effect, the same.

So I want that against my skin. I want to touch my skin.

I want to be over top of my heart.

I want to be. It's going to change everything

about life that I formerly knew. I'm just going to hang on me.

It's going to it's going to define me.

That's why whenever life she went back to the Jordan River

that he and Elijah had crossed, but he stands there and we know

the garment is in his hand. At this moment I envision a

prophet Elijah with rendered outer and inner garment standing

there with a prophet Elijah's mantle in his hand.

What a picture. But he cries out and says, where

is the Lord God of Elijah? And he takes that old prophet's

mantle as his are. Rent.

And he strikes the waters. And the.

Jordan rose on the left and on the right.

Just. As it had Poor Elijah.

Folks, there's a lot we don't know, but I'm wondering Sister

Sheila had it, had the impact? Had he not rented his own

garments first? Because when it comes to put

anything on. He's going to it's.

Going to have to be the man. So I stand here with already a

commitment God at the Jordan River with the common man that I

was divided, separated with the hand on a mantle that you are

calling me to. And I'm saying, where is that?

I don't know if it was so much a proving point for him or maybe

he even felt like he needed to prove God.

Here I am God, I'm giving you some dedication here.

I'm giving some commitment. Where are you, Lord?

And he hits it. I believe there was resolve in

his mind that day when he crossed over Jordan.

I'm not mending this. I put it on that I it's when the

mantle becomes the man. Someone say glory, you stand

with me, I won't hold you much longer.

I'm serious. The uniqueness of Elisha

compared to everything else before him.

Again, it's not. That was something added to the

conglomerate of other items he could take.

On her off. To him.

It was replacement It was. Replacement brother travel.

Hear me? It wasn't oh, I'm going to be

among this group in that company.

I got a garment for that. You hear me?

Oh, it's. Sunday Hawk at the profits

Garment out. No, it was his Monday garment,

his Tuesday garment, his Wednesday garment, his Thursday

garment, his holiday garment. His vacation.

Garment him with the world, garment him with the church,

garment when he's doing a miracle, garment when he's

eating a home, garment to my question to you tonight is what

is God? What is God calling you to

today? Purpose that God and the calling

that God has on your life. He doesn't want that just to be

an accessory to you. He wants it to consume you.

He wants it to em wrap you. He wants it to be what presses

against your life. My wife says at least once a

year I got to clean out my closet.

Heather Billy, we only had one rod in our closet when we first

moved in that house and it just look, I knew she was going to

say that justification right there, so I made.

It a double Decker. I took the top, she takes the

bottom 2 bars in that thing. Now she has clothes in the

closet as you come in the front door.

There's an armed wire out in the garage.

Got clothes in it. I guarantee when Mariah moves

out her closet, her whole room right out says there came the

walk in closet. Now only have a little piece of

of Realty. Oh, I'm saying the night is

this. She says, well, you know, once

you are and they clean out because there's some stuff I

don't wear anymore. I don't like anymore, don't fit

anymore. Passions have changed the river

Billy. Whenever the the mantle of God's

purpose in our life comes to us, you know what it is?

It's clean out closet day. And I'm talking about real

clothes. I'm talking about whatever I

used to identify myself with, the old man, the old ways, the

old thoughts, the old clean out closet day.

Because the way that I'm going to be walking now, that's not

going to fit right. The places I go, the song that I

sing, the way that I'm going to speak, that's just not going to

fit right. You don't need to leave

yourself. Listen to the pest.

You don't need to leave yourself with a Plan B.

You need to be like the old historical fact of them.

And the crew says you need to burn the ships, right?

They burned the ships when they got to the shore because they

were going to go to battle and they didn't want to have any

type of temptation that if it got too rough or too hard,

someone would just go back to the ship and say no, I'm

selling. Hard.
