David: They are good.

Brother Jim: thinking that is an odd

Brother Jim: And especially, how did this poor lady get on the show with

Brother Jim: these two lunatics?

Brother Jim: Well, I think she's part of the crew, actually, yes.

Brother Jim: So come on and join Mr. David,

Brother Jim: myself and Miss Buffy as we

Brother Jim: boldly say, thank you, Lord, for

Brother Jim: another day.

Brother Jim: Rejoice that you are alive.

Brother Jim: And when you look in that mirror

Brother Jim: today, remember you're

Brother Jim: And most of all, oh my goodness, you are loved.

Brother Jim: Now a woman woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and saw she

Brother Jim: had only one, two, three hairs on her head.

Brother Jim: Well, she said, I think I'll braid my hair today.

Brother Jim: So she did.

Brother Jim: And she had a wonderful day.

Brother Jim: Now the next morning she looked in the mirror and she only saw

Brother Jim: two hairs on her head.

Brother Jim: HMM.

Brother Jim: She said, I'll think I I'll part my hair down the middle today.

Brother Jim: So she did.

Brother Jim: And she had a grand day.

Brother Jim: Now, the next day she saw that

Brother Jim: she only had one hair on her

Brother Jim: head.

Brother Jim: Okay, she said, today I'm going to wear my hair in a ponytail.

Brother Jim: So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

Brother Jim: The next day she woke up, looked

Brother Jim: in the mirror, kind of looked

Brother Jim: like Brother Jim and saw that

Brother Jim: there wasn't a single hair on

Brother Jim: her head.

Brother Jim: Wow, she exclaimed, I don't have to fix my hair today.

Brother Jim: Attitude is everything.

Brother Jim: Never forget that.

Brother Jim: Now our thought of the day and

Brother Jim: this goes right along with Miss

Brother Jim: Buffy.

Brother Jim: The purpose of life is not to be happy.

Brother Jim: It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate,

Brother Jim: to have it made, to have it make some difference that you have

Brother Jim: lived and you have lived well.

Brother Jim: And by the way she's dressed, she is a cowgirl at heart.

Brother Jim: So I asked the cowgirl if she ever gets tired.

Brother Jim: guest joining us this morning straight from T County herself,

Brother Jim: including the Oregon organization she represents.

Brother Jim: And as I said, she's just a down earth country girl cowgirl.

Brother Jim: Please welcome Miss Leslie Buffy Booth, executive director of T

Brother Jim: for C, which stands for.

Brother Jim: And I can never remember this Tuscarawas County Council for

Brother Jim: Church and Community.

Brother Jim: Welcome, Miss Buffy.

Brother Jim: Thank you.

Brother Jim: And how are you doing today?

Leslie Booth: I'm doing great.

Brother Jim: All right.

Brother Jim: Welcome to the madness.

Brother Jim: The funny farm, as we like to call it.

Brother Jim: I'm sure you'll walk out of here shaking your head and saying,

Brother Jim: what did I just do?

Brother Jim: And what was I a part of?

Brother Jim: So why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself and

Brother Jim: your role in the organization?

Leslie Booth: I am the executive director of T for C. I've been the director

Leslie Booth: for three years now.

Leslie Booth: I grew up in Tuscarawas County, and as Pastor Jim said, I am a

Leslie Booth: country person at heart.

Leslie Booth: My husband and I both.

Leslie Booth: We have a four age group for

Leslie Booth: over twenty years now, so we're

Leslie Booth: active in the community and in

Leslie Booth: the country.

Brother Jim: So yes, and it was by God's blessing.

Brother Jim: I believe she is also a part of

Brother Jim: the Twin City Ministerial

Brother Jim: Association, which I'm a part

Brother Jim: of.

Brother Jim: And we have a monthly meeting, and we just met down there and

Brother Jim: one thing led to another.

Brother Jim: I think her crazy matched up with my crazy humor, matched my

Brother Jim: humor, which is a scary thing.

Brother Jim: And bada bing, bada boom, here we are buddies.

Brother Jim: And the ironic thing her name,

Brother Jim: her husband's name is Harold,

Brother Jim: which my legal name is Harold

Brother Jim: too.

Brother Jim: Now here's the funny thing.

Brother Jim: When him and I started talking,

Brother Jim: I found out his dad, whose name

Brother Jim: was Harold, was a milkman for

Brother Jim: Goshen Dairy.

Brother Jim: And lo and behold, as a boy, I remember the milkman.

Brother Jim: Do you guys remember the milkman coming around?

Brother Jim: He was our milkman.

Brother Jim: And his name, Harold.

Brother Jim: Her husband's name?

Brother Jim: Harold.

Brother Jim: I'm Harold.

Brother Jim: So the running joke with my mom was, huh?

Brother Jim: What's going on with the milkman?

Brother Jim: So ironic.

Brother Jim: And her husband and I, we look a lot alike, so.

Brother Jim: Just kidding.

Brother Jim: No.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: So, uh, again, you said you're

Brother Jim: you've been at T for C for three

Brother Jim: years.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: And how long has the

Brother Jim: organization organization T for

Brother Jim: C actually been serving our

Brother Jim: community?

Leslie Booth: It began in nineteen sixty six

Leslie Booth: by a group of local ministers,

Leslie Booth: local ministers.

Brother Jim: And I like that because it mentions faith.

Brother Jim: Yes, yes.

Brother Jim: And that's a good thing in our day and age, because let's be

Brother Jim: honest, there are so many scam artists spams out there.

Brother Jim: You want to be helpful, you want to be giving.

Brother Jim: But in our world today, unfortunately, people take

Brother Jim: advantage of that.

Brother Jim: So everybody has their guards up.

Brother Jim: True.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: So this is the real deal, my friends.

Brother Jim: It is legit because I've been working with them and I see the

Brother Jim: fantastic, awesome work that they do in our community.

Brother Jim: Now, what are some of the biggest.

Brother Jim: What's your mission of your organization?

Leslie Booth: First, to devise and facilitate programs to effectively serve

Leslie Booth: the needs of the people in Tuscarawas County in cooperation

Leslie Booth: with businesses, education, government, health, religious

Leslie Booth: and social service agencies.

Brother Jim: Okay. So what are some of the biggest needs that you've

Brother Jim: encountered as the director?

Brother Jim: Facing our people in our area today.

Leslie Booth: A lot of people are living

Leslie Booth: paycheck to paycheck as well as

Leslie Booth: we know.

Leslie Booth: You know, things are getting tighter, more expensive, but

Leslie Booth: they're only basically one catastrophic away from losing

Leslie Booth: their homes, losing, you know, their vehicles, their jobs.

Brother Jim: Yes. A lot of paycheck to paycheck.

Brother Jim: People out there in one bad month could really.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: I think for a lot of us working class people, blue collar middle

Brother Jim: class, that that.

Leslie Booth: Yeah, it doesn't discriminate.

Leslie Booth: It's everybody.

Brother Jim: Yes. Well, that's a good thing that we have here.

Brother Jim: But again, and this is Buffy and

Brother Jim: I have shared part of our

Brother Jim: frustration as churches, as

Brother Jim: pastors, we need to come

Brother Jim: together to let all the

Brother Jim: churches, the pastors, the

Brother Jim: administrators know where the

Brother Jim: help is because I myself have

Brother Jim: faced that.

Brother Jim: You get somebody calling or stopping by and we don't know

Brother Jim: where to send them.

Brother Jim: Right.

Brother Jim: And, you know, and again, in our

Brother Jim: area, I, I've heard and I've

Brother Jim: seen contributions, if you can't

Brother Jim: pay your bills, you're not going

Brother Jim: to give.

Brother Jim: And that's the hard thing.

Brother Jim: Uh, and I believe in one of our

Brother Jim: meetings, you said our

Brother Jim: contributions are kind of on the

Brother Jim: downside.

Brother Jim: And again, this show isn't to get you to contribute, but to

Brother Jim: make you aware.

Brother Jim: You know, it's tough out there for everybody.

Brother Jim: Everybody's feeling the pinch.

Brother Jim: What are some of the biggest needs facing the people?

Leslie Booth: You think a lot of the people right now, of course, we know

Leslie Booth: the gas prices are high.

Leslie Booth: Um, one of the big needs that we

Leslie Booth: serve in Tuscarawas County is

Leslie Booth: laundry days.

Leslie Booth: We've seen a major increase in the amount of laundry services

Leslie Booth: that we provide, where they can come into the office and get a

Leslie Booth: laundry bag that has laundry, soap or roll quarters and fabric

Leslie Booth: sheets in it once a month.

Leslie Booth: That has increased significantly in the last three months.

Leslie Booth: There again, gas vouchers.

Leslie Booth: We give gas cards.

Leslie Booth: It's one every six months, and after the second one you have to

Leslie Booth: wait a year.

Leslie Booth: But that's to help you get to

Leslie Booth: work or to a doctor's

Leslie Booth: appointment.

Leslie Booth: You know, we've had them say,

Leslie Booth: well, I have multiple doctor's

Leslie Booth: appointments.

Leslie Booth: We can also try to find other places to, to help them look to

Leslie Booth: where they can look for that.

Leslie Booth: Um, a lot of hours that we have because of the grants that we do

Leslie Booth: get, we have to have confirmation, like we have to

Leslie Booth: have a pay stub.

Leslie Booth: You have to be a Tuscarawas

Leslie Booth: County resident for six months

Leslie Booth: or longer.

Leslie Booth: You have to have a card.

Leslie Booth: The question was, can we have it on our phone?

Leslie Booth: In the past we have.

Leslie Booth: But unfortunately, like you said, there's scammers.

Leslie Booth: So now everything has to be printed and brought in with you

Leslie Booth: when you come.

Brother Jim: Okay. So you are asking for accountability and proof.

Brother Jim: Correct.

Brother Jim: The help is there, but they have to be accountable to provide the

Brother Jim: information that you need.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: And I have seen that's very crucial.

Brother Jim: People need to pay attention to what you're asking for.

Brother Jim: You're not making it complicated.

Brother Jim: It's just here's our standards

Brother Jim: that we are being held to, that

Brother Jim: we asked that we were holding

Brother Jim: you to as the individuals who

Brother Jim: need help.

Leslie Booth: Because we have to turn a lot of that information in.

Leslie Booth: When we write on write our grants, we have to have that

Leslie Booth: accountability that we're not just giving these cars out.

Leslie Booth: There is no discrimination.

Leslie Booth: It doesn't matter.

Leslie Booth: But we have to follow the grant

Leslie Booth: guidelines because in order to

Leslie Booth: keep getting I mean, we all know

Leslie Booth: grants are getting slimmer,

Leslie Booth: right?

Brother Jim: And, you know, she hit a very good thing.

Brother Jim: And I was there the other day.

Brother Jim: I stopped in to see how things were going at their office.

Brother Jim: And she's got two amazing assistants, by the way.

Leslie Booth: They're wonderful.

Brother Jim: Yes. And, uh, you want to give a shout out to them?

Leslie Booth: Uh, Jenny Horner, Jennifer

Leslie Booth: Horner, and Carol Vickers, they

Leslie Booth: have just really helped turn

Leslie Booth: things around.

Leslie Booth: And like I said, this is our

Leslie Booth: transgression year here changing

Leslie Booth: year.

Leslie Booth: So we're making more things

Leslie Booth: accountable and trying to get

Leslie Booth: more funding.

Leslie Booth: And they've stepped in and really helped with that.

Leslie Booth: So it gives me more time to look for other ways to help.

Brother Jim: Yeah, I would, I would sum it up.

Brother Jim: They got a little bit of a funny

Brother Jim: farm over there too at T

Brother Jim: foresee.

Leslie Booth: We do.

Brother Jim: But you know, folks, she had

Brother Jim: said about the laundry days, how

Brother Jim: many of us are so blessed that

Brother Jim: we don't even think about that,

Brother Jim: that we just we need to wash our

Brother Jim: jeans, our shirts or whatever

Brother Jim: socks, underwear, we just throw

Brother Jim: it in our washer, then throw it

Brother Jim: in a dryer and we go about our

Brother Jim: merry way.

Brother Jim: A lot of people don't have that situation.

Brother Jim: And, you know, I've had to do it before.

Brother Jim: When you have to load everything up, go to the laundromat, try to

Brother Jim: find one that looks decent and battle people for spaces.

Brother Jim: It.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Leslie Booth: So have kids and try to.

Brother Jim: Love the kids.

Leslie Booth: Yes, as.

Brother Jim: Well. And, uh, I know Buffy and

Brother Jim: the crew, they were setting up

Brother Jim: at local laundromats, but they

Brother Jim: have found it so much easier,

Brother Jim: convenient for people to come

Brother Jim: in, like you said, and just pick

Brother Jim: up the necessities they need,

Brother Jim: and they can do that once a

Brother Jim: month, correct?

Leslie Booth: Yep. They just come in and sign up originally, bring your ID, we

Leslie Booth: give you your stuff.

Leslie Booth: And the only stipulation is you can continue to come every

Leslie Booth: thirty days, Monday through Thursday, nine to two.

Leslie Booth: You have to bring back the bag

Leslie Booth: and the bottle of the laundry

Leslie Booth: soap.

Leslie Booth: It's empty.

Leslie Booth: We refill it.

Leslie Booth: That's the only stipulation.

Brother Jim: Pretty easy folks.

Brother Jim: Pretty easy.

Brother Jim: Now, what are some common misconceptions people have?

Brother Jim: And I love this question.

Brother Jim: Common misconceptions people

Brother Jim: have about those who need

Brother Jim: assistance.

Leslie Booth: A lot of them, you know, they

Leslie Booth: think a lot of people are just

Leslie Booth: out there wanting handouts,

Leslie Booth: which I'm sure there are some,

Leslie Booth: you know, people think we just

Leslie Booth: ask for money just to give it

Leslie Booth: out.

Leslie Booth: And that's not it.

Leslie Booth: Our money is accountable.

Leslie Booth: I mean, we are we go through the audit each month.

Leslie Booth: We go through our accountants, check everything.

Leslie Booth: We make sure that the money is going for the needs.

Leslie Booth: A lot of people are like, well,

Leslie Booth: you just you guys are wanting

Leslie Booth: money or other organizations

Leslie Booth: wanting money just to hand it

Leslie Booth: out.

Leslie Booth: That is not true.

Leslie Booth: There are guidelines and we do stick by the guidelines.

Leslie Booth: A lot of people say, well,

Leslie Booth: they're getting places, multiple

Leslie Booth: places helping with the same

Leslie Booth: thing.

Leslie Booth: That's what we're all trying to work together, right?

Leslie Booth: To make it so that there is

Leslie Booth: funding and that more people can

Leslie Booth: get help.

Brother Jim: Okay. And, you know, I think it's it's very easy to say we're

Brother Jim: all guilty of judging sometimes.

Leslie Booth: Absolutely.

Brother Jim: And that as a Christian, as a

Brother Jim: follower of Christ, we are not

Brother Jim: supposed to.

Brother Jim: But it is hard because we're of the flesh.

Brother Jim: But again, we don't know their story.

Brother Jim: Right.

Brother Jim: And you made a very good point.

Brother Jim: Most of us, that could be us if,

Brother Jim: God forbid, something would

Brother Jim: happen.

Brother Jim: So again, we need to be careful before we judge.

Brother Jim: And again, yes, like in everything, there's good people

Brother Jim: and bad people.

Brother Jim: People are going to take advantage.

Brother Jim: But let me remind you, it's not our job to judge.

Brother Jim: God is the only one that's going to judge that.

Brother Jim: So again, just a reminder, don't, don't, don't judge the

Brother Jim: book by its cover because we don't we don't know their story.

Brother Jim: We don't.

Brother Jim: Now, what challenges do families in our community face that

Brother Jim: people may not realize?

Leslie Booth: A lot of the families, they

Leslie Booth: challenge their challenge by,

Leslie Booth: you know, like utility bills,

Leslie Booth: rent assistance, food,

Leslie Booth: transportation.

Leslie Booth: Um, that's the big challenges

Leslie Booth: that we see for the families in

Leslie Booth: our community.

Brother Jim: Uh, are there other organizations you work with that

Brother Jim: help also provide assistance?

Leslie Booth: Yes. We work with all, most of

Leslie Booth: the nonprofits in Tuscarawas

Leslie Booth: County.

Leslie Booth: Um, there's so much in Tuscarawas County to offer.

Leslie Booth: There's even little books that, if anybody's interested, can

Leslie Booth: stop into the office.

Leslie Booth: And it has the breakdown of like

Leslie Booth: with housing, we work a lot with

Leslie Booth: Salvation Army.

Leslie Booth: We work with a lot of the caseworkers in the community.

Leslie Booth: JFS is another big one that we work with, um, United Way.

Leslie Booth: So we work with a lot of nonprofits and businesses to try

Leslie Booth: to help these people, and also by helping, you know, the

Leslie Booth: community, a lot of times it helps these businesses to get

Leslie Booth: their employees to work, and that way the businesses can

Leslie Booth: continue to, um, work and grow.

Brother Jim: You know, you hit again, that's one of the big things you hear,

Brother Jim: well, we can't get employees.

Brother Jim: Nobody wants to work, but also we need to look and think.

Brother Jim: Think for a moment before we judge.

Brother Jim: It's so hard to go to a job if you don't have a place to live.

Brother Jim: You don't have a place to keep

Brother Jim: your clothes clean, to have

Brother Jim: transportation.

Brother Jim: Correct?

Brother Jim: Right.

Brother Jim: I mean, there's got to be a

Brother Jim: starting point to help boost

Brother Jim: these people, to get them the

Brother Jim: The cost of living is so high today.

Brother Jim: What we take advantage of, we

Brother Jim: can just hop in our car and go,

Brother Jim: But if you don't have a car, you don't have the gas.

Brother Jim: You can't pay for the insurance.

Brother Jim: What do you do?

Brother Jim: So there again, my friends

Brother Jim: listening, there are programs in

Brother Jim: Tusk County.

Brother Jim: Now, Buffy, here's a big one for you.

Brother Jim: And this isn't on our list.

Brother Jim: Is it true we have a lot of

Brother Jim: people coming from up north

Brother Jim: stark County, Summit County, are

Brother Jim: you aware of that coming into

Brother Jim: our areas?

Leslie Booth: I do know that some will come, I

Leslie Booth: believe, to some of the food

Leslie Booth: pantries.

Leslie Booth: We've had them come to our business or our nonprofit, but

Leslie Booth: we are unable to help because ours has to strictly be

Leslie Booth: Tuscarawas County resident.

Brother Jim: And you said six months, correct.

Leslie Booth: You have to be at least a resident.

Brother Jim: Okay.

Leslie Booth: For six months minimum for it to get any assistance through T

Leslie Booth: four C, right.

Brother Jim: And again, I believe, correct me

Brother Jim: if I'm wrong, we want T four C.

Brother Jim: All the organizations want to

Brother Jim: help people.

Brother Jim: But again, you got a lot of when

Brother Jim: like say people from outside our

Brother Jim: area here that we're giving out

Brother Jim: right?

Brother Jim: Then it automatically consumes

Brother Jim: more of the aid, which leaves

Brother Jim: less to provide for local

Brother Jim: residents.

Leslie Booth: And I know I believe most of the

Leslie Booth: nonprofits in our area too, as

Leslie Booth: well.

Leslie Booth: Has to be.

Leslie Booth: Now, some of them do serve other counties.

Leslie Booth: Some of the other.

Leslie Booth: But ours is strictly.

Leslie Booth: Everything that's brought in,

Leslie Booth: even with share Christmas stays

Leslie Booth: in Tuscarora.

Brother Jim: And that's a good thing there.

Leslie Booth: Yes, that's.

Leslie Booth: A big question we get asked all the time.

Brother Jim: Yeah. Uh, now you've mentioned

Brother Jim: quite a few things you do there,

Brother Jim: specific services that you

Brother Jim: provide.

Brother Jim: There's a big one I got to help with last year.

Brother Jim: Would you like to talk about that one?

Leslie Booth: Our share.

Leslie Booth: Christmas. So our share

Leslie Booth: Christmas hit fifty years last

Leslie Booth: year.

Leslie Booth: Um everybody thinks it's just for children.

Leslie Booth: Well share Christmas.

Leslie Booth: Anybody can apply for it.

Leslie Booth: You fill out an application

Leslie Booth: which you'll call in in July

Leslie Booth: this year to the office, make

Leslie Booth: your appointment.

Leslie Booth: And then we're going to do

Leslie Booth: applications in person again in

Leslie Booth: September.

Leslie Booth: Um, we will be giving away a gift gift card to Kohl's in this

Leslie Booth: card is to be used strictly for clothing undergarments, things

Leslie Booth: like that that you need.

Leslie Booth: Um, people say, well, what if they use it for other stuff?

Leslie Booth: I'm not the.

Leslie Booth: Police.

Leslie Booth: Right?

Leslie Booth: So if they do, that's between them and God.

Leslie Booth: And that's like I've said over the last three years, you can

Leslie Booth: lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Leslie Booth: So, um, we will be doing toys

Leslie Booth: again for ages zero or for one

Leslie Booth: to ten.

Leslie Booth: And when you fill out your application, you'll need to

Leslie Booth: bring all the income proof of all your income, um, your ID.

Leslie Booth: We do not need any kind of bills, just proof of all income

Leslie Booth: and your ID.

Leslie Booth: If you get paid cash, you need a letter from your employer

Leslie Booth: stating how much you make, how many hours you work.

Brother Jim: Okay, so it's very specific.

Brother Jim: And last year I got to volunteer a little bit and help.

Brother Jim: And there is a lot of

Brother Jim: frustration there when people

Brother Jim: don't bring what they're

Brother Jim: required.

Brother Jim: And I will say this T four C does an excellent job of sending

Brother Jim: stuff out and correct me if I'm wrong, but through the schools

Brother Jim: you send it home.

Brother Jim: So the parents have A very large time to prepare.

Leslie Booth: Yes, we.

Leslie Booth: Actually sent reminders save the

Leslie Booth: dates to all the schools in

Leslie Booth: Tuscarawas County last month

Leslie Booth: before.

Leslie Booth: School.

Brother Jim: Okay. All right.

Brother Jim: Um, so that's a big one.

Brother Jim: And then also, which I love this.

Brother Jim: Our residents in our nursing homes.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Leslie Booth: So at Christmas time, we started three years ago.

Leslie Booth: Um, every resident in the twelve nursing homes in Tuscarawas

Leslie Booth: County received a blanket.

Leslie Booth: Last year was a pillow.

Leslie Booth: This year we have volunteers helping us to make, um, walker

Leslie Booth: bags for every resident.

Leslie Booth: And the walker bags isn't just for a walker.

Leslie Booth: It'll fit over the arm of their chair.

Leslie Booth: It'll fit over the edge of their bed or the rail or their bed.

Leslie Booth: Um, we were, um, we received a nice donation from, uh, yeah,

Leslie Booth: Tuskegee VFW to help purchase the cost of those bags.

Leslie Booth: So if anybody likes to sew, come see us.

Leslie Booth: Um, I can tell you, we're halfway through them, and

Leslie Booth: they'll be one hundred and fifty five of them will be.

Leslie Booth: Wow.

Leslie Booth: This year.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Brother Jim: And the great thing is it's made with love because each one is

Brother Jim: sewn together, correct?

Brother Jim: Yep.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: And last year it was blankets.

Leslie Booth: Pillows.

Brother Jim: Pillows, pillows.

Brother Jim: Okay.

Leslie Booth: So you also get.

Leslie Booth: A book and we got a, um, a donation to from the Tuscarawas

Leslie Booth: County Pork producers to help with some of the books as well.

Brother Jim: Yes. Uh, and that's another good thing here because Rockford

Brother Jim: Church, uh, there for two years, we were going into the nursing

Brother Jim: homes at Christmas, handing out little bags and with success.

Brother Jim: But it's nice when we can join forces together for a larger

Brother Jim: impact instead of just one nursing home that we were doing.

Brother Jim: And we've got our little elves here working, helping out

Brother Jim: people, donating their time.

Brother Jim: And that just makes the we can reach more people.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Brother Jim: And spread more love and

Brother Jim: especially the love of Jesus

Brother Jim: through this.

Brother Jim: Because let's be honest, uh, I'm just being honest.

Brother Jim: When you go in a nursing home, you see so many people that are

Brother Jim: just neglected, right?

Brother Jim: Nobody comes to see him.

Brother Jim: Nobody shows there.

Brother Jim: They don't know that they're loved.

Brother Jim: They don't know they're cared about.

Brother Jim: And at least this opportunity people, you know, especially

Brother Jim: Christmas time it.

Leslie Booth: It's sad to see.

Brother Jim: It is.

Brother Jim: But if we can bring a little bit of joy.

Leslie Booth: Right.

Brother Jim: And a little bit of love, what

Brother Jim: better way to minister to people

Brother Jim: than this?

Brother Jim: Um, now, uh, I'm going to jump in on this.

Brother Jim: When we talked about it, can you

Brother Jim: share a success story that

Brother Jim: highlights the impact of your

Brother Jim: work?

Brother Jim: And I told Buffy, I said, I got

Brother Jim: to go down last year and, uh, a

Brother Jim: lot of parents bring their

Brother Jim: children and there's a lot of

Brother Jim: people from, uh, uh, Guatemala

Brother Jim: outside of our, our country's

Brother Jim: borders.

Brother Jim: And here's the cool thing that I

Brother Jim: got to witness and not all, but

Brother Jim: there seems to be like a fear or

Brother Jim: a, a wall of people standing in

Brother Jim: line.

Brother Jim: You know, perhaps pride would be the biggest thing.

Brother Jim: And me being me.

Brother Jim: You know I love to talk, which you all know and joke around,

Brother Jim: you know, finding a way to communicate with them and joke

Brother Jim: with them and just show them, hey, it's all good.

Brother Jim: That was such a blessing to help tear down those walls that were

Brother Jim: not all critical, judgmental.

Brother Jim: And again, children are children.

Brother Jim: I don't care where they come from, you know, and, and let's

Brother Jim: all go back to the time when we were kids, what Christmas meant.

Brother Jim: Now, yes, we know what Christmas stands for.

Brother Jim: But again, as a child, and I

Brother Jim: remember one year we had a and I

Brother Jim: was a little bit older, but we

Brother Jim: had a very rough year and I

Brother Jim: understood.

Brother Jim: But still, it's tough when

Brother Jim: there's really nothing under the

Brother Jim: tree.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Brother Jim: So here's a way T four C helps

Brother Jim: just with the kids alone, but

Brother Jim: also the parents that they're

Brother Jim: able to provide something for

Brother Jim: their children.

Brother Jim: So yeah, again and you can

Brother Jim: always come down and volunteer,

Brother Jim: right?

Leslie Booth: Absolutely.

Leslie Booth: We're always looking for volunteers, monetary donations.

Leslie Booth: Um, and it's not just with sewing.

Leslie Booth: We'll be packing up.

Leslie Booth: We do the two hundred senior bags as well.

Leslie Booth: We try to reach out to two

Leslie Booth: hundred different seniors and we

Leslie Booth: put boxes together for them with

Leslie Booth: cleaning supplies and things

Leslie Booth: like that.

Leslie Booth: It's just a way to give back.

Brother Jim: Exactly.

Brother Jim: Um, what are some of the biggest challenges your organization

Brother Jim: faces other than funding?

Brother Jim: Um, that's probably the biggest one.

Brother Jim: I would.

Leslie Booth: Say our.

Leslie Booth: Funding is the biggest.

Leslie Booth: We are so blessed with the

Leslie Booth: volunteers that we have and the

Leslie Booth: support.

Leslie Booth: Um. T four c hours is definitely

Leslie Booth: the funding because like I said,

Leslie Booth: we used to be able to get grants

Leslie Booth: and some of the grants are not

Leslie Booth: there anymore.

Leslie Booth: Um, and it's also trying to find other areas.

Leslie Booth: So it does take time and effort, you know, and like you say, so

Leslie Booth: many people are afraid to, they're being judged.

Leslie Booth: We are not judgmental.

Leslie Booth: We're open to everybody.

Leslie Booth: We don't care what your past is.

Leslie Booth: We don't care anything about that.

Leslie Booth: We are there to help.

Leslie Booth: And if we cannot help you, we

Leslie Booth: will work with other

Leslie Booth: organizations to find you that

Leslie Booth: help.

Leslie Booth: So if there's any kind of need

Leslie Booth: they need, whether it's I'm

Leslie Booth: moving into an apartment or I,

Leslie Booth: you know, I got evicted, I don't

Leslie Booth: have a bed or I, you know, call

Leslie Booth: us because if we can't find help

Leslie Booth: with it, we reach out to other

Leslie Booth: people.

Leslie Booth: To try to get.

Leslie Booth: The help as.

Leslie Booth: Well.

Brother Jim: All right.

Brother Jim: Well, that says a lot right there.

Brother Jim: You're willing to work with other organizations for the

Brother Jim: benefit of the good?

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Brother Jim: Now, how do you measure success?

Brother Jim: I do this to David once in a while.

David: All the time.

Brother Jim: All the time.

Leslie Booth: Okay.

Leslie Booth: So we measure success by the

Leslie Booth: impact we're making on people's

Leslie Booth: lives.

Leslie Booth: It's not by what we're giving

Leslie Booth: them, it's how we're helping

Leslie Booth: them.

Leslie Booth: Whether it's a financial donation of paying a bill or

Leslie Booth: whether it's to help them get back on their feet.

Leslie Booth: Because the new thing that we're trying is to, instead of saying,

Leslie Booth: I'm behind on my utility bill, how can you pay it?

Leslie Booth: They're going to have to start

Leslie Booth: coming in and filling out an

Leslie Booth: application.

Leslie Booth: If they don't have a job, we're

Leslie Booth: willing to help them try to find

Leslie Booth: jobs.

Leslie Booth: I've talked to different businesses in the area that

Leslie Booth: they're looking for employees to get them back on their feet,

Leslie Booth: because when they get back on their feet, they feel better.

Brother Jim: Oh, absolutely.

Brother Jim: Uh, so instead of a handout, it's a hand up, correct?

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: And that's very good because again, you hit it on the head,

Brother Jim: uh, when you feel like you're just not producing, not giving,

Brother Jim: it's very easy to become complacent and opportunity here

Brother Jim: for them to help your organization helps you get on

Brother Jim: your feet to where.

Brother Jim: But people got to be willing and wanting to do.

Brother Jim: Exactly.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Brother Jim: Yeah. And that's, that's one of the toughest things.

Brother Jim: Uh, now here, uh, how can people support your organization?

Brother Jim: I know you mentioned, you know, donations time.

Brother Jim: Is there anything else that you want to add to help support T4?

Brother Jim: C.

Leslie Booth: Put the word out there.

Leslie Booth: Put the word out.

Leslie Booth: A lot.

Leslie Booth: Of people.

Leslie Booth: Because again, a lot of people think that T four C is worth.

Leslie Booth: Just share Christmas and we're not.

Leslie Booth: We are so many more things and

Leslie Booth: you know spread the word about T

Leslie Booth: four C if you need more

Leslie Booth: So typically share Christmas is nine months out of the year it

Leslie Booth: takes us to organize everything.

Leslie Booth: Right?

Leslie Booth: So, you know, we start with printing everything.

Leslie Booth: So we always need volunteers to

Leslie Booth: help us with the printing and

Leslie Booth: sorting.

Leslie Booth: Um, once we'll need volunteers to come in on application day to

Leslie Booth: take out the applications or to do the applications for us,

Leslie Booth: we'll need them to do filing.

Leslie Booth: Um, When we hand out the letters, we always need

Leslie Booth: volunteers to come set a couple hours and hand out their their

Leslie Booth: awards to them.

Brother Jim: Okay. One thing I want to add that I witnessed last year, if

Brother Jim: anybody out there can speak, I'm going to say Guatemalan Spanish.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Brother Jim: Different dialects.

Brother Jim: Correct?

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Brother Jim: You would be a blessing,

Brother Jim: especially when people are

Brother Jim: they're signing up for share

Brother Jim: Christmas.

Brother Jim: Correct.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Leslie Booth: That is a real blessing.

Leslie Booth: And again, in July, if anybody's

Leslie Booth: available that can speak Spanish

Leslie Booth: and be willing to come in to

Leslie Booth: help us with the phones to set

Leslie Booth: would be a big thing because

Leslie Booth: there is a, you know, a language

Leslie Booth: You know, they'll giggle because some of the stuff I'm like, oh

Leslie Booth: yeah, what we say.

Brother Jim: Yeah. It's like me talking pig Latin, you know?

Brother Jim: So yeah.

Brother Jim: to get.

Brother Jim: Yeah. Whether it's Dollar Tree, Walmart, it doesn't matter.

Brother Jim: It's just the actual bag and the, uh, the tools, we'll call

Brother Jim: them tools that they need.

Brother Jim: Um. Boy, it was there and then it was gone.

Brother Jim: Um, oh, speaking of, uh,

Brother Jim: detergents, is there any

Brother Jim: specific.

Brother Jim: Because I know some people have skin allergies.

Leslie Booth: We right now, we haven't, um, put a limit on what we can take

Leslie Booth: because anything is helpful.

Brother Jim: Okay.

Leslie Booth: Um, but if anybody wants to donate, like hypoallergenic that

Leslie Booth: way, if anybody does have an allergy, those kind of thing.

Leslie Booth: But I will tell you, nobody's complained of what we've had.

Brother Jim: again.

Brother Jim: And I'm, I don't want to call the kettle black here because I

Brother Jim: could do a better job too.

Brother Jim: But again, we, we can find it if we look.

Brother Jim: And most of all, if you pray about it, that's the big thing.

Brother Jim: Pray how can I help the local churches?

Brother Jim: How can I help T four C and all

Brother Jim: the local organizations that

Brother Jim: help people?

Brother Jim: That's your starting point there.

Brother Jim: Now, how can local churches, businesses and community groups

Brother Jim: partner with you?

Leslie Booth: So there again, with the

Leslie Booth: financial, like Pastor Jim and I

Leslie Booth: had talked about, we want to get

Leslie Booth: a group of all the ministers in

Leslie Booth: Tuscarawas County here coming up

Leslie Booth: soon, a meeting where we can get

Leslie Booth: everybody on the same boat that

Leslie Booth: way, because I know you had the

Leslie Booth: question, what is there offered

Leslie Booth: out there?

Leslie Booth: Right.

Leslie Booth: That way everybody knows what's offered because our ministers

Leslie Booth: take a beating.

Leslie Booth: The churches are taking a beating right now.

Leslie Booth: Like I said before, you know, everybody's turning which way to

Leslie Booth: go and get stuff.

Leslie Booth: And everybody thinks, well, because it's a church, they're

Leslie Booth: going to have all the money to give it to us.

Leslie Booth: And that isn't.

Leslie Booth: So very true.

Leslie Booth: So we need to find ways that we all work together because not to

Leslie Booth: be mean, but you can't go place to place, right?

Leslie Booth: So this way, I think if we get

Leslie Booth: all the ministers on board too,

Leslie Booth: that would help relieve a lot of

Leslie Booth: the stress on the ministers and

Leslie Booth: their secretaries.

Brother Jim: Yes, very well said.

Brother Jim: And also for the people that

Brother Jim: need the help, instead of

Brother Jim: wasting gas and time driving

Brother Jim: around, we could provide an

Brother Jim: answer.

Brother Jim: You need to go see this organization instead of driving

Brother Jim: out here or driving here.

Brother Jim: Driving there.

Brother Jim: Uh, now, here's a big one for you.

Brother Jim: How does faith influence the work that you do?

Leslie Booth: It influences everything.

Leslie Booth: I mean, we're all supposed to be like Christ, like we're supposed

Leslie Booth: to give back.

Leslie Booth: We're supposed to be servants

Leslie Booth: and, you know, be fishers of

Leslie Booth: men.

Leslie Booth: You can give a man a fish and.

Leslie Booth: He'll eat, but.

Leslie Booth: You give him a fish and he has to eat for life.

Brother Jim: There you go, there you go.

Brother Jim: And maybe, just maybe, you folks

Brother Jim: out there can be the

Brother Jim: encouragement that somebody

Brother Jim: needs to plant the seeds that,

Brother Jim: hey, you know, and I'm just

Brother Jim: going to say it, you know, it's

Brother Jim: nice that our government

Brother Jim: provides services to help people

Brother Jim: out, but when it becomes a way

Brother Jim: of living, that's where the

Brother Jim: problem is.

Brother Jim: We should be encouraging people.

Brother Jim: And as you said in your

Brother Jim: organization, to help people get

Brother Jim: back on their feet, find a job

Brother Jim: to start providing for their

Brother Jim: family and contributing back to

Brother Jim: society.

Brother Jim: Right.

Brother Jim: And again, Whether you're working at Walmart or working

Brother Jim: for a union driving an excavator, you're working.

Leslie Booth: That's right.

Brother Jim: You know, and it's a stepping process.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Leslie Booth: And you feel good about yourself

Leslie Booth: too, when you're able to provide

Leslie Booth: because, you know, that's one of

Leslie Booth: the reasons we do what we do

Leslie Booth: because stress, stress will pull

Leslie Booth: you down.

Leslie Booth: It affects your health.

Leslie Booth: It affects your your

Leslie Booth: relationships, your marriage,

Leslie Booth: your children.

Brother Jim: Yes, I think stress is probably

Brother Jim: the biggest killer we have in so

Brother Jim: many ways.

Brother Jim: Now, why do you believe serving others is so important?

Brother Jim: I know you're pretty.

Brother Jim: Uh, you could probably go about anywhere and get a job, but why?

Brother Jim: Why this?

Leslie Booth: Well, even since I was young, my

Leslie Booth: You know, you're blessed.

Leslie Booth: You give back.

Leslie Booth: So, like I said, Harold and I have been four-h advisors for

Leslie Booth: over twenty some years.

Leslie Booth: He's on the volunteer fire department.

Leslie Booth: We have a young adult group that we meet with.

Leslie Booth: We just have to communicate with other believers and to bring

Leslie Booth: others in to build the kingdom.

Leslie Booth: But it's important to give back because like you said, you're

Leslie Booth: the only encouragement that maybe somebody has that day or

Leslie Booth: you don't know.

Leslie Booth: What they're going through.

Brother Jim: Right?

Brother Jim: Uh, and that's so true.

Brother Jim: You might be the only light they see in the darkness.

Brother Jim: And if we're honest, there's a lot of darkness out there.

Brother Jim: And what I like with Harold and

Brother Jim: Buffy, too, is they're serving

Brother Jim: through the four H. But also

Brother Jim: through this young man's

Brother Jim: ministry.

Brother Jim: Young, young adults.

Brother Jim: I shouldn't say young man, young adults.

Brother Jim: And I've seen a change through some of the gentlemen that go to

Brother Jim: that from our own church.

Brother Jim: It's a place that is safe.

Brother Jim: They can come to.

Brother Jim: They can be themselves a lot of humor.

Brother Jim: Now, whether they're learning to

Brother Jim: dance or not, that remains in

Brother Jim: question.

Brother Jim: But again, and it's all Bible

Brother Jim: based, and I love that it's

Brother Jim: Bible based.

Brother Jim: And if Buffy and Harold don't know, they find the answer.

Brother Jim: And let's be honest, David, my

Brother Jim: friend, you've been quiet over

Brother Jim: there.

Brother Jim: Do you have the answers to everything?

David: Absolutely not.

Brother Jim: Exactly.

Brother Jim: Sometimes you got to look it up, right?

Brother Jim: Sometimes you got to do a little research.

Brother Jim: And if we would all do that.

Brother Jim: Because believe you me, I don't have all the answers.

Brother Jim: But I'm willing to dig.

Brother Jim: I'm willing to look.

Brother Jim: So again, through your organization, through your

Brother Jim: volunteering from four H Herald with the fire department, I

Brother Jim: mean, you're giving back.

Brother Jim: And again, sometimes people at their lowest, you're there.

Brother Jim: So, uh, is there any Bible

Brother Jim: verses, you know, or passages

Brother Jim: that encourage you in your own

Brother Jim: ministry?

Leslie Booth: So I do have this one jotted down.

Leslie Booth: It's Matthew twenty five thirty five through forty where Jesus

Leslie Booth: talks about feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, and

Leslie Booth: carrying it for those in need.

Leslie Booth: This message reminds us that

Leslie Booth: when we serve others with

Leslie Booth: compassion, we're living out our

Leslie Booth: faith in meaningful and

Leslie Booth: practical way.

Brother Jim: Okay. Thank you.

Brother Jim: And I'm sure you've seen God

Brother Jim: working through the

Brother Jim: organization.

Leslie Booth: Absolutely.

Leslie Booth: I've actually had the opportunity, you know, and in

Leslie Booth: your sermons that I've sat through two a couple times, it's

Leslie Booth: like, are we doing God's work.

Leslie Booth: Are we on that back burner?

Leslie Booth: Like, oh, someone else will do it.

Leslie Booth: But I've actually had the opportunity when people come in

Leslie Booth: that I've got to pray with them or ask them what church?

Leslie Booth: Wow.

Leslie Booth: That might not lead anywhere, but the door was open.

Brother Jim: Yes. You planted a seed.

Brother Jim: Yes. And again, it comes back to what are you willing to do?

Brother Jim: That individual.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Brother Jim: As you said, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't

Brother Jim: make them drink.

Brother Jim: Uh, for you personally, what's

Brother Jim: the most rewarding part of your

Brother Jim: work?

Leslie Booth: I guess seeing the impact of and hearing like some of the

Leslie Booth: testimonies that come back, like, thank you guys.

Leslie Booth: Not, not us personally, but thank you to this organization

Leslie Booth: because we wouldn't have had food on our table.

Leslie Booth: I would have lost my job.

Leslie Booth: So knowing that there is a difference.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Leslie Booth: You're going to have pros, you're going to have cons, but

Leslie Booth: just, you know, it takes one little smile, but.

Leslie Booth: A frown is so much worse, you know?

Leslie Booth: Preach it.

Leslie Booth: But a smile, it takes longer for one smile to go through.

Leslie Booth: But you know, or something positive versus negative.

Leslie Booth: And if we need to You keep encouraging with the positivity

Leslie Booth: and just think that little.

Leslie Booth: The faith of a mustard seed.

Leslie Booth: Yes.

Leslie Booth: You know that little seed you plant?

Leslie Booth: It's going to grow.

Leslie Booth: It's going to grow.

Leslie Booth: It's going to.

Leslie Booth: Grow.

Brother Jim: I've said many times what it hurts to say or to smile or to

Brother Jim: say thank you.

Leslie Booth: Like Tuscarawas County is one of

Leslie Booth: the most giving counties that

Leslie Booth: I've ever.

Leslie Booth: Okay.

Leslie Booth: You know, because I've worked

Leslie Booth: with other counties on different

Leslie Booth: things.

Leslie Booth: But we are a very giving and compassionate county, especially

Leslie Booth: at share Christmas, as you've.

Leslie Booth: Seen when the toys.

Leslie Booth: Come in and things like.

Leslie Booth: That. Oh yeah.

Leslie Booth: The seniors stuff.

Leslie Booth: But yeah, there is.

Leslie Booth: There's a lot that the

Leslie Booth: unexpected ways or the ways

Leslie Booth: that.

Leslie Booth: People go.

Leslie Booth: To get around things.

Leslie Booth: And it's just just ask.

Leslie Booth: Ask for help.

Leslie Booth: Don't lie about.

Leslie Booth: It.

Brother Jim: Right?

Brother Jim: And I imagine too, maybe

Brother Jim: sometimes, like I've witnessed

Brother Jim: this myself, the one you think

Brother Jim: that's just going to totally

Brother Jim: bomb might be the one that

Brother Jim: surprises you and pulls their

Brother Jim: boots, puts their work boots on,

Brother Jim: and does a one eighty in their

Brother Jim: life?

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Leslie Booth: And when you get the success stories that come back that say,

Leslie Booth: you know, I fell on hard times, but now I'm back on my.

Leslie Booth: Feet.

Leslie Booth: Because of the generosity.

Leslie Booth: Of.

Leslie Booth: Someone in this community or

Leslie Booth: someone that was willing to pray

Leslie Booth: for me or, you know, talk to me

Leslie Booth: about things.

Leslie Booth: So yes.

Brother Jim: And I'm sure that keeps you motivated.

Leslie Booth: Oh it.

Leslie Booth: Does. Yeah.

Leslie Booth: When you hear the good sides,

Leslie Booth: because just like anything else,

Leslie Booth: when you.

Leslie Booth: Keep getting.

Leslie Booth: Down and beat down and beat down, you get to the point

Leslie Booth: where, okay, is it worth.

Leslie Booth: It?

Leslie Booth: Right.

Leslie Booth: But it is.

Brother Jim: Yeah, just that one moment, that one smile, that one thank you.

Brother Jim: Changes you to, keeps you

Brother Jim: motivated, keeps you motivated,

Brother Jim: It's a genuine, heartfelt thank you.

Brother Jim: Now, what advice would you give someone who wants to make a

Brother Jim: difference in their community?

Leslie Booth: Volunteer.

Leslie Booth: Volunteer.

Leslie Booth: Volunteer. Whether it's at the Bible schools.

Leslie Booth: Uh. Vacation Bible schools in our in our local schools.

Leslie Booth: Look for a nonprofit.

Leslie Booth: There's many nonprofits out

Leslie Booth: there right now that are looking

Leslie Booth: for volunteers, whether the

Leslie Booth: stuffed bags for kids for meals

Leslie Booth: or Meals on wheels for the

Leslie Booth: seniors through Cleveland

Leslie Booth: Clinic.

Leslie Booth: There is just so many ways to volunteer.

Leslie Booth: Get a group together and either

Leslie Booth: sow or collect items or, you

Leslie Booth: know, check wherever things are

Leslie Booth: needed.

Leslie Booth: But yes, get involved in your community.

Brother Jim: Get involved.

Brother Jim: My friends there straight from the horse's mouth.

Leslie Booth: Exactly.

Brother Jim: Yes. But yeah, get involved.

Brother Jim: What's stopping you?

Brother Jim: And you know what?

Brother Jim: So many people get up in age and

Brother Jim: then they think, well, I've done

Brother Jim: everything.

Brother Jim: I'm done.

Brother Jim: I'm good.

Brother Jim: As I said Sunday morning, we pack our bags and we wait.

Brother Jim: No, that's not what God.

Brother Jim: And again, if you can find

Brother Jim: scripture, it says you're

Brother Jim: allowed to retire at sixty five

Brother Jim: or seventy.

Brother Jim: Whatever.

Brother Jim: Let me know, please, because I've yet to find it.

Leslie Booth: We're looking at possibly maybe

Leslie Booth: doing a gala, but instead of a

Leslie Booth: gala, maybe a hoedown, just

Leslie Booth: different things.

Leslie Booth: Because you don't want to copy.

Leslie Booth: Off of what other people do, but.

Leslie Booth: Write.

Leslie Booth: To help support.

Leslie Booth: That.

Brother Jim: And it's important, I think, to identify with our community.

Brother Jim: You know, we're just a bunch of hicks from the sticks, the

Brother Jim: majority of us.

Brother Jim: So if we had a black tie affair.

Leslie Booth: I wouldn't fit.

Leslie Booth: In. Well.

Leslie Booth: I act like a hard butt, but I'm actually probably one of the

Leslie Booth: most compassionate person.

Leslie Booth: I don't let some of the hardship that I hear go.

Leslie Booth: It stirs at me.

Leslie Booth: It keeps me like I have to keep going.

Leslie Booth: Like I have someone call in and say, well, you can't help me.

Leslie Booth: Well, I have to keep going because that bothers me.

Leslie Booth: I'm right.

Leslie Booth: I'm compassionate how others feel.

Brother Jim: I think we're a lot alike.

Brother Jim: We wear our emotions on our sleeves.

Brother Jim: Yes.

Brother Jim: And sometimes it might get a little feisty and.

Brother Jim: But it's.

Leslie Booth: There's.

Brother Jim: Pure passion there. Yes. Yes.

Brother Jim: She's scared the bejesus out of me a couple times.

Brother Jim: Just with her sternness.

Brother Jim: Oh, okay.

Brother Jim: No, no. But again, you got to be passionate.

Brother Jim: And that's the great thing.

Brother Jim: And I think people with passion, you get it all.
