  1. You're listening to the Bridgetown Church Podcast with

  2. Pastor Casey Kendall, where our vision is Jesus, our mission is

  3. people, and our cause is love. Thanks for tuning in.

  4. Let's dive in. If you have your Bible handy,

  5. I'm in Psalm 62 this morning. I'm going to deviate away from

  6. Second Samuel for this special message we announced last week.

  7. My transition leading out of Bridgetown in our Commission

  8. into Tennessee at a church called Conduit and with Chris

  9. and Pam taking the lead. And we've had various responses

  10. to the announcement and we've had different degrees of this

  11. that all of us are grieving and walking out this journey

  12. together. It's OK for you to be sad.

  13. It's OK for you to be. Angry.

  14. It's OK. For you to have questions, it's

  15. OK for you to doubt. That's all part of the grieving

  16. process. But what we want to do is what

  17. I've entitled this message this morning is we shall not be

  18. shaken. We shall not be shaken if you

  19. have. Someone sitting next to you.

  20. Behind you on the left or the right of you, can you just look

  21. at them and say, neighbor, my neighbor, you shall not be

  22. shaken. You shall not be shaken.

  23. If you have your Bible handy, I want to direct your.

  24. Attention to the Book of Psalms and Psalm 62, beginning in.

  25. Verse 5. The author.

  26. Is a man that you well know of. That you've been.

  27. Learning about his name is. David, he writes these words.

  28. My soul waits silently for God alone, for my expectation is

  29. from Him. He only is my rock.

  30. And my salvation. He is my defense.

  31. I shall not be moved in. God is my salvation and my.

  32. Glory the rock. Of my strength and my refuge is

  33. in God. Trust in Him at all times.

  34. How many times at all times you people pour out your heart

  35. before Him. God is a refuge for us.

  36. Say law. As we've gathered together this

  37. morning, David pins these words in this book that we have in our

  38. hands called Psalms. The word Psalm simply means

  39. songs. And there is something about

  40. music and songs that take such a special place in each one of our

  41. lives. Such a special place that

  42. possibly even you right now you have your own playlist for your

  43. home. It has such a special place for

  44. you that you have your own playlist for the gym, you have

  45. your own playlist when you're in your car.

  46. That's how much of A place that songs and music take hold of in

  47. our lives. But not only do songs have a

  48. place in our lives, but songs often take a priority in our

  49. lives. They say the average American

  50. will listen to music 32 hours a week, 32 hours a week.

  51. That is the. Priority that we often give to

  52. our favorite band, or our favorite songs, or our playlist

  53. that we love to hear. But not only are songs having a

  54. place in our lives, not only do songs have a priority in our

  55. lives, songs are powerful. Have you ever noticed that you

  56. could have learned a song 30 years ago and you are walking

  57. through the store and all of the sudden a song pops up in your

  58. mind. Flintstones Meet the Flintstones

  59. have a yabba Dabba Doo time Dabba Doo time Have a gay old

  60. time A Back then, that word meant something radically

  61. different than what it means right now, but songs are

  62. powerful. I was actually walking through

  63. the store the other day and a song popped up in my mind.

  64. It's not from a very good band. It was a rap band listened to.

  65. By a white boy called N.W.A. And I'm walking through the

  66. store and all of a sudden as I'm pushing my cart, this song pops

  67. up in my mind. Move quickly.

  68. So I fleed. Out the back with a.

  69. Fistful of jewelry? Oops, the wall.

  70. Don't. Fall wipe my sweat because that

  71. was a close call. Getting ganged by the E.

  72. Is a lesson so. Are there any more questions?

  73. I was in an argument. With my wife and another song

  74. popped up in my mind. Is it too late now to say sorry?

  75. Songs have a very special place in our lives and there is one

  76. song I remember 15 years ago by a man by the name of Marty

  77. Goetz. Marty Goetz came into our church

  78. at Calvary Chapel of the High Desert and he had his keyboard

  79. in front of him. Marty Goetz is a completed Jew.

  80. He is born again, He is met the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

  81. And as he began to sing, he, he began to play the keyboard and

  82. he began to kick his feet 1 foot at a time and he began to sing

  83. this song. He is my defense, I shall not be

  84. move it. He is my defense, I shall not be

  85. moved. And everyone got out their keys

  86. and now he is my defense, I shall not be move it.

  87. And then he would just begin to talk in Hebrew to us and and it

  88. was just such a special moment. And he really is our defense.

  89. There is something about music that moves us.

  90. Chuck Swindoll writes these words that music is deeply

  91. moving and powerful because it is more than mere excuse me, it

  92. is for us. It serves for us as something

  93. that is just not mere words. It is spiritual and it acts as a

  94. conduit to the heart, calming the Spirit, and cements divine

  95. truth in a way that mere words cannot.

  96. When worship and music are woven into daily life, working or

  97. resting, he writes, they can refresh the Spirit.

  98. They can shift a person's perspective from a secular,

  99. hurried view to a focus on eternity.

  100. You see, songs are powerful not just BC before you met Jesus

  101. Christ, but songs are very powerful in your life even after

  102. you've become a Christian. This is what the Bible tells us

  103. to do, sing a new song to the Lord.

  104. The Bible commands us to sing a new song to the Lord.

  105. If you want some biblical reference for that, if you would

  106. write down Psalm 33 verse 3 where the author says sing a new

    Psalms 33:3

  107. song to the Lord. If you want to write down

  108. another verse, Psalm 40 verse 3, the author writes sing a new

    Psalms 40:3

  109. song to the Lord. Again in Psalm 96 verses one

  110. through 3, the author writes and commands us to sing a new song

  111. to the Lord. Again the Bible says in Psalm 98

  112. verse one that we would sing a new song to the Lord.

  113. Again in Psalm 149 verse one, the Bible again tells us to sing

  114. a new song to the Lord. The prophet Isaiah said in

  115. Isaiah 42 verse 10 sing a new song to the Lord.

    Isaiah 42:10

  116. When John the Revelator saw in heaven in Revelation chapter 5

    Revelation 5:9

  117. verse 9, the Bible says that he said that they were singing a

  118. new song to the Lamb of God. With a new heart you have a new

  119. song, and because I have a new song, I will boldly proclaim

  120. this to my Savior and my Lord Jesus Christ that He is worthy

  121. of it all. And because He is worthy of it

  122. all, I want to know what God do you want to sing?

  123. What have you already written down in the Bible that we could

  124. sing? Tucked in the middle of your

  125. Bible is the book called Psalms. This is the national Israel

  126. Israelites songbook. This is what the children of

  127. Israel would go to when they wanted to remember the songs of

  128. ascent. When they had their songs now

  129. they would recite from this book the book of Psalms.

  130. If you take note, the book of Psalms is broken up into five

  131. separate books. This book is written in book one

  132. versus a chapter, excuse me, of Psalms. 3 through 41 is book one

  133. of the book of Psalms. Book two of the book of Psalms

  134. is chapter. 42 through 72 Book three of the book of Psalms is

  135. chapter chapter 73 through 89, book 4 is chapter 90 through one

  136. O 6 and then book 5 is chapter one O 7 through chapter one.

  137. 4573 of the Psalms were written by one specific person.

  138. His name is David. David writes and pins 73 songs.

  139. He was the second king of Israel that we remember, pointing to

  140. the forever King Jesus that we know.

  141. And now in this moment, as he wrote 73 of these psalms, he was

  142. the warrior and the poet. David was the man who was called

  143. by God through the anointing of Samuel to be the king of the

  144. nation of Israel. But not only that, he was the

  145. one who fought Goliath, chopped his head off, went out out of

  146. the valley of Elah victorious with the nation of Israel.

  147. Then the hit song on K love about his life was Saul has

  148. slain to his thousands, but David is 10s of thousands.

  149. David was a mighty warrior, but he was a creative poet for Jesus

  150. Christ. Do you know you could be strong

  151. and creative at the same time? Do you know that being creative

  152. is not being weak? Do you know you can fight for

  153. the Lord and write for the Lord? This is David's life.

  154. And this is where it comes down to a spot in David's life where

  155. we see the background of this new song that David writes.

  156. David, when he writes Psalm 62, is not kicking back in the

  157. palace in Jerusalem. He's not sipping on his iced

  158. tea, his tropical tea. He is not throwing up his

  159. sandals and reclining in his lawn chair.

  160. David is facing great hardship. One that was the closest to him

  161. had betrayed him. The one that he raised, the one

  162. that he had cared for, the one who he had fed, had turned his

  163. back on his father, and he leads a political uprising and

  164. rebellion against him. His name is Absalom.

  165. Absalom, David's very own son, gathers a group of people in a

  166. cohort together to fight against the father that loves him.

  167. This is the background of Psalm 62.

  168. David is in a cave. He's hiding.

  169. It's dirty. It's messy.

  170. David's grieving. David's wondering what is going

  171. to happen about all of the future.

  172. And David then declares to us that even and though he is

  173. hurting, he is still hollering that God is good and in the

  174. middle of your misery right now. I want you to ascribe this music

  175. over your life. And I want you to see this

  176. principle that pain should not silence your praise nor nor the

  177. misery that you're in. Cancel the music that's in your

  178. heart. You can have a true melody even

  179. in the midst. Of your own adversity, the.

  180. One thing that often snuffs the song out of our lives is

  181. bitterness. The one thing often that will

  182. snuff out what's recorded in God's Word that brought joy to

  183. you at one time is resentment. And all of my past hurts come to

  184. a surface that the song of God wants to sing over your life.

  185. And he says to you today, you are not done yet.

  186. Did you see what God is doing? How this can all happen in a

  187. moment? It happens here in Psalm 62 when

  188. David is facing such great adversity in his heart towards

  189. Absalom and wondering where God are you in the midst of all of

  190. this? And this is what he writes for

  191. us in Psalm 62, verse 8. Let's read it out loud together.

    Psalms 62:8

  192. It is he says this. Trust in Him at all times.

  193. Let's try that again. Trust in Him at all times.

  194. You people now notice this. Pour out your heart before Him.

  195. Pour out your heart before Him. I want to submit this sentence

  196. to you today in this sermon. I want you to pour out your

  197. heart before him. Can you just say that to your

  198. neighbor? Pastor Casey wants us to pour

  199. out out our heart before him. If you're new here, welcome.

  200. We love to be a church that will engage.

  201. And if it's sunny outside, we sure want it to be sunny in

  202. here. This word poor is a verb in the

  203. Hebrew that's used 115 times in the Old Testament.

  204. It's stretching from Genesis to Malachi.

  205. And here's the context in the range for this word poor.

  206. This word poor is used and taken from ritual worship to

  207. battlefield carnage, from the silent grief of lament to the

  208. jubilant hope of the prophets woven through these diverse

  209. settings as a unified witness. What is poured out belongs to

  210. God. I'll say that again.

  211. What is poured out belongs to God, falls under His judgement,

  212. and is bestowed by His grace. This word poor, therefore stands

  213. at the convergence of holiness, justice, mercy, and

  214. eschatological promise. I want you to see this today in

  215. your life. How you pour out will determine

  216. how you stand in your own pain. Once again, how you pour out

  217. will determine how you stand in your own pain.

  218. And David tells us specifically what to do in the midst of

  219. something that is grieving, hurtful, bitter resentment.

  220. He tells us what to do and how to pour.

  221. He gives us specific things that we should do.

  222. Notice the first thing if you're taking note, and that is this.

  223. He says pour with patience, poor with patience.

  224. I want you to hear that word again because in our culture we

  225. hate the word wait. I want you to pour with

  226. patience. Notice what David declares.

  227. He actually says this to his own soul in verse 5.

  228. He says my soul, my inward being, my life on the inside of

  229. me. That's what the word soul soul

  230. means. He speaks to himself and he

  231. reminds himself of what God has called him to do.

  232. This is so important is that you become a person that reminds

  233. yourself on what God has called you to do.

  234. Church is not a car wash where you put it in neutral and you

  235. hit on the track and you let the pastor wash your life.

  236. Church is just the huddle where you get encouraged, where you

  237. are strong enough as a follower of Jesus Christ to not only come

  238. to church and hear from your pastor, but you learn how to

  239. pastor yourself. You learn how to lead yourself.

  240. And this is what David is doing exactly.

  241. He says my soul. He doesn't say my Israelites.

  242. He doesn't say my Hebrew people. David starts with himself

  243. because whatever is happening on the inside of my life will

  244. eventually make its way to the outside of my mouth.

  245. And so David looks here and he says, my soul.

  246. Now notice this. Wait silently for God alone, for

  247. my expectation is from him. No, no, notice these two words

  248. in verse five. Wait silently.

  249. Oh, would you circle those words?

  250. Would you highlight those words? Would you underline those words

  251. in your life? Notice what David does not say.

  252. David does not say wait anxiously my soul.

  253. David does not say wait and worry, Oh my soul, David does

  254. not say into this situation, wait with frustration, wait and

  255. panic. No, this is what he says.

  256. He says wait silently. What does the What does this 2

  257. words mean in Hebrew? Literally, it means to be.

  258. Still, but the last. Thing I want to do when I'm

  259. scared is to be still. It is the same thing that God

  260. told Moses when the children of Israel were being LED out.

  261. Of Egypt and into the promised land.

  262. It's what God told Moses. The Pharaoh and the Egyptian

  263. leaders were coming on the backside.

  264. The Red Sea was in front of Pharaoh and the children of

  265. Israelites. They could not cross this area

  266. and God said this to him. Moses be still, and see the

  267. salvation. Of the Lord.

  268. Can I encourage you? If the song is going to mean

  269. anything, you're going to have to be still because sometimes

  270. our our moves are made out of not being still.

  271. But how do I be still? David tells us in verse 5, he

  272. says for my expectation is from him my expectation.

  273. So if you would. Circle the words, wait silently.

  274. Then down in the verse. Circle the word.

  275. Expectation. My expectation.

  276. The the the word. There, expectation is where we

  277. get the word hope. The word literally means

  278. expectation literally means to bind something together.

  279. Here's the picture. When I am facing something that

  280. is a burden or something that's bothering me or something that's

  281. big and breaking me down, I twist myself into the character

  282. of God like a rope that's woven together.

  283. I twist myself like that into the character of God.

  284. You cannot hope in Him unless you are in Him.

  285. Do you see? Stillness doesn't equal your

  286. weakness. Listen to me, please.

  287. Stillness doesn't equal your weakness, but this is what it

  288. equals. Stillness always equals

  289. steadiness. Stillness will always equal

  290. soundness. Stillness will always equal

  291. toughness in your life. But I believe in moments that I

  292. stopped pouring with patience is because of this I.

  293. Stopped believing that God is still good.

  294. And because I've stopped believing that God is still

  295. good, I stopped pouring out my life.

  296. With patience. I began to insert my own estate

  297. plan. I began to design my.

  298. Own deliverance and live in this delusion that I could do this

  299. better, I could actually do this faster and rather than relying

  300. on the power of God and pre eminence of his character and I

  301. find myself now proving to myself in my own mind.

  302. That the record of the Bible. Is not true.

  303. And that God is, is not good. Can I submit to you what that

  304. old pastor once said? God is good all the time.

  305. Oh, someone knows it. Someone grew up in the Baptist

  306. Church. God is good all the time.

  307. Come on, let's get it. A little bit more engagement in

  308. this room. It goes like this.

  309. God is good all the time. And you say all the time God is

  310. good that that says I need to bring out the handkerchief right

  311. now and start dabbing my head. You know, I want to, I want to,

  312. I want you to know that God is good all the time and all the

  313. time. God is good all the time, all

  314. the time, all the. Time in every area of my life.

  315. God is good and He's proven and he's promised.

  316. Not only is He good. But that he will work it out for

  317. good in your life. And in my life, that's what the

  318. word of God says. I want you to.

  319. Look at Moses. Moses experienced the

  320. deliverance of God because of his patience at the Red Sea.

  321. Look at Abraham, he had patience at the altar with Isaac.

  322. Look at Joshua. Can you imagine?

  323. They're about to beat Jericho and God says whoa, whoa, whoa,

  324. whoa. Wait a second here.

  325. I want you to March around Jericho 6 times and on the 7th

  326. day walk around it 7 times. Don't.

  327. Get out your weapons yet blow the.

  328. Trumpets. That doesn't make sense.

  329. Joshua's a warrior. He's a fighter.

  330. God told him to do something different that was normally not

  331. done in battle. You don't walk around the walls

  332. and. Set yourself up to be.

  333. Shot down. Can you imagine on day three,

  334. the children of Israel? God, what are you doing?

  335. And this is just feels like this circle.

  336. Over and over again that that's how you feel in your life.

  337. The same job, the same freeway, the same school, the same

  338. parents. You have to deal with the, the,

  339. the the same problems and, and, and I can imagine on day 6:00,

  340. the children of Israel are going, Lord Joshua, OK, it's

  341. time. It's time for us to fight and no

  342. gods to know. It's time for you to walk.

  343. And then on the 7th day, Can you imagine now 7 times Lord do the

  344. seven times. Can you imagine the?

  345. Patience that it took. Not to pull out their swords,

  346. but to praise God with their trumpets.

  347. When they praised. God with the trumpets on the.

  348. 7th day, the seventh time around.

  349. The walls came tumbling down. Did you see the patience of

  350. Joshua? Look at throughout all of the

  351. history. Listen, the patience of Ruth to

  352. stay with Naomi, she could have left.

  353. Listen to this the patience of Esther to stay in the palace.

  354. Look at Job, the patience to stay in his own home when his

  355. wife said curse God and die. Listen and maybe you find

  356. yourself in that type of marriage.

  357. Listen, stay the course. Look at the disciples impatient

  358. with Jesus's words and they flee the garden.

  359. The only way not to be moved is to only move when God tells you.

  360. Why is this important? Because He's doing what is good.

  361. Even though it doesn't feel good, it is still good.

  362. Because without the death of our Savior, you and I would not

  363. experience the power of the resurrection from our Lord Jesus

  364. Christ. Listen, I want you to pour this

  365. out with patients. We do not have to understand

  366. everything to pour out something to the Lord.

  367. We can wait silently because we look expectantly to him.

  368. I, I, I think this is well portrayed as I took my, my

  369. daughter to the, the doctors and as I took my daughter to the

  370. doctors, we had to wait in the doctor's office.

  371. If you've ever been in urgent care, we waited for 45 minutes,

  372. 45 minutes waiting in urgent care and this is what I heard.

  373. What's going on on the other side of that door?

  374. It's a doctor at lunch. Is the doctor even there?

  375. But then I took the same daughter to Magic Mountain.

  376. We didn't wait for 45 minutes in the line.

  377. We waited for three hours in a line.

  378. She was engaged. She was.

  379. Smiling, she was laughing. She was having a gay old time.

  380. She was. Having such a sweet moment and I

  381. asked her after what was the. Difference in your attitude at

  382. the doctor's office and your attitude at Magic Mountain.

  383. And she said these. Words because Dad, I knew what

  384. was coming was going to be good and I.

  385. Submit that to you today. What is coming is going to be

  386. good. What is?

  387. Happening in your life is going to be good.

  388. What God is doing might be different, but it's going to be.

  389. Good. It might not be.

  390. Easy, but it's going to be good. It not might not be what you

  391. expected, but it's going to be. Good.

  392. It is going to be something where God is good all the time

  393. and all the time God is good. Come on, church, Listen, there's

  394. something good that is coming to you.

  395. And I know, I know you all believe in the holiness of God.

  396. I know you all believe in the mercy of God and the forgiveness

  397. of God and the omniscience of God.

  398. I know that you all believe in the justice of God and the the

  399. power of God. But have you lost sight today of

  400. the? Goodness of God.

  401. Have we lost sight of pouring it out with patience because we've

  402. lost the sight of the goodness of God?

  403. I love what Chris shared last week, that God is a good God and

  404. he used the word Providence that God is into the details of your

  405. life. He is so much into the details

  406. that he tells you no for your protection and he says yes out

  407. of his wisdom. He's so much into your life that

  408. God is good. And here's what I want to just

  409. tell you today. That God is good at your home,

  410. that God is good in your workplace.

  411. That God is good on the five, the 405, the 210, the 10, the

  412. 71. God is good.

  413. God is good on the 605. God is good on the 105.

  414. God is good in and on the freeway.

  415. God is good at your school, with the teachers you.

  416. And we could keep pouring our life out, in and to the One who

  417. gave it all for us. I love what Vance Havner said.

  418. He said that God is on the lookout today for a man or a

  419. woman who will be quiet enough to get a message from Him, brave

  420. enough to preach it, and honest enough to live it.

  421. Keep pouring with patience. He is good, he is good.

  422. We sing that song You are good, good Oh, you are good, good, oh,

  423. you are good. I wonder if our mouths move to.

  424. Songs we don't really believe in.

  425. I wonder if there is a disconnect from our mouth to our

  426. hearts. Because it's easy for me to come

  427. in here and to put on a show and to tell you that this really

  428. isn't hard or this really isn't difficult.

  429. I really haven't battled my own grief and tears through this

  430. whole thing. It's easy for me to put.

  431. On a mask and act. Like in these moments that that

  432. this, this is something that you look at me and you go, wow,

  433. Pastor Casey's doing really well.

  434. What if I'm not? Doing really well.

  435. Does that mean I stopped singing and praising the Lord?

  436. Listen, in your life, in my life, it's going to take us.

  437. Pouring. Out with patience into the

  438. obedience of God to the call of God that He has for His.

  439. Can I encourage you to keep pouring with patience?

  440. Can I encourage you also to do this in verse 6 through 7?

  441. Keep pouring with perspective. Keep pouring with the right

  442. perspective. Listen, the Bible says in verse

  443. 6 that he only is my rock, not talking about Dwayne.

  444. Listen and my salvation. He is my defense.

  445. I shall not be moved and God is my salvation.

  446. He's my glory. He's the rock of my strength and

  447. he is my refuge. Look at what David's outcome in

  448. the midst of his time in this middle of the rebellion.

  449. He doesn't just see that God is good.

  450. He he doesn't view that God is distant.

  451. His view of God is that God is intimate with him.

  452. And I think the one thing that hinders worship is you stop

  453. believing that God is good and you.

  454. Stop believing that God is intimate in your ways.

  455. And David pinpoints this in our lives, that God is almighty, but

  456. he is near to humanity. No notice He uses the word my in

  457. these two verses 7 times. Did you notice that He says this

  458. is God is my rock, my salvation, my defense.

  459. Then he says in verse 7 that God is my salvation.

  460. Again, He's my glory, He is my strength, and He is my refuge.

  461. No, notice the word my. Can I teach a little bit today?

  462. The word my in our English grammar is the possession

  463. determiner. It's the possession determiner.

  464. So what does this mean? The word of my possession

  465. determiner speaks of association and ownership.

  466. When my wife's here and she's not really sick and bedridden, I

  467. look at my wife to you and say this is.

  468. My wife. Notice also when you're driving

  469. your car, You say this is my car parents, when you're introducing

  470. your kids that are obedient, you say these are my kids even when

  471. they're rebellious. Listen, you say this to people

  472. and they ask you what your job is.

  473. They you say, this is my job. Notice David does not just

  474. associate himself with his pain, He actually associates himself

  475. with the person of God. He says he, he only is my rock.

  476. He's referring back to Jehovah, that God is his salvation.

  477. And he gives us a list of a perspective of God that I want

  478. you to write down in your notepads.

  479. And I, I'll slow down for you because for some of you, I'm

  480. talking too fast for you to take notes today.

  481. Listen, notice the letter A. If you take note, put this in

  482. your notebook. The perspective of God.

  483. He is my rock. He's my rock.

  484. He is my rock. Literally, he is.

  485. My immovable, steadfast source of strength.

  486. He is my. Protection.

  487. And he is my security, literally.

  488. He is my immovable, steadfast source of strength.

  489. He is my protection and He is my security.

  490. Notice if you take letter B, if you're taking note, the second

  491. characteristic of God is He is my salvation.

  492. He's my salvation. God is not just my rock, He's

  493. also my salvation. Notice the word salvation.

  494. There is. He is my rescuer.

  495. He is my safety. He is my deliverance from

  496. spiritual and physical danger. He's my salvation.

  497. Notice this if you're taking note.

  498. He says he is my defense. Letter C He's my defense.

  499. He is my defense. He's my protector and shield

  500. from physical and spiritual adversity.

  501. He is my defense. He's my protector.

  502. He's my shield from physical and spiritual adversity.

  503. Then he says again, if you're taking note, letter D, he

  504. reiterates that He says He is my salvation again, which if you

  505. need the definition for that, just go back up to letter B and

  506. notice He says in letter E that he says He is my glory.

  507. He is my glory. Now notice this.

  508. He is my honor, my splendor and my achievement and.

  509. My validation this is important. Because some of us need

  510. validating. I hear you.

  511. I see you. But there's one grader that

  512. hears you and sees you and sees you.

  513. That's not a word. Sees you and he knows you, and

  514. He loves you. He is my glory.

  515. He is the one who is my honor. He is my splendor.

  516. He is my achievement and He is my validation.

  517. Half of you believe that. Notice letter F.

  518. He is my strength. He is my strength.

  519. If you're taking note, the Lord God Himself is my strength.

  520. He is my power for endurance. He is my courage and He is my

  521. resilience. He is my strength.

  522. He is my power for endurance. He's my courage and He is my

  523. resilience. Letter G.

  524. If you take note, He is my refuge.

  525. He's my refuge. He is my refuge.

  526. He is my absolute safety. He is my absolute shelter, and

  527. he is my absolute strength in life's trials and emotional

  528. chaos. He is my refuge.

  529. I want us to have the right perspective because you are

  530. owned by and you're associated with the one who rescues you.

  531. The one who brings safety to you, the one who delivers you

  532. from spiritual and physical danger.

  533. You are associated and owned by the one who promises to protect

  534. and shield you. The one who gives you the power

  535. to endure, the courage to stand and the resilience to move

  536. forward. You are owned and associated

  537. with the one who brings absolute safety, shelter, and strength.

  538. This is the one, the one who you are connected to, the one who's

  539. committed to be wholly yours every season of life that you

  540. walk through, the one who's promised to give you vision,

  541. victory and validation over your life.

  542. I am waiting for Jesus one day to say well.

  543. Done. I'm waiting to walk into heaven

  544. for him to say good and faithful servant of God.

  545. My validation comes from him and tucked into the middle of all of

  546. these characteristics of God, David writes these words.

  547. I shall not be moved when I am sandwiched in the middle like an

  548. Oreo cookie, the cream of it in the middle of the character of

  549. God sandwiched in the middle. I will not be moved if I find

  550. myself basing my life in the character of what and who God

  551. says He is. His connection is worth is why I

  552. will not waver. Because of His company.

  553. I will not go off course. His sureness is why I don't have

  554. to be shaken. But here's the danger that each

  555. one of us has is we have a larger perspective of our

  556. problems and a smaller perspective of our God.

  557. And because of that, what we see is a larger perspective of the

  558. problem. And thus we only view God all

  559. the time through the lens of our own problems rather than the

  560. lens of seeing God and then our problems.

  561. I'm not saying that our problems are not hard.

  562. I'm not saying that the things we don't face are difficult.

  563. I'm not saying that we never will grieve or cry.

  564. I'm not saying any of that. But what I am saying is this.

  565. See God first. Charles Spurgeon once said that

  566. if you turn to see the face of God, you could face any given

  567. situation in your life. And that is true of each one of

  568. our lives. And many times what happens is

  569. our small perspective of the person of God leads us to an

  570. inadequate view of Jesus the Christ.

  571. And we no longer look at Jesus as the one true risen Savior.

  572. We put worship ahead of Jesus. We beg people to come and serve

  573. Jesus. We beg people to come and be at

  574. a place where they would be generous with their offering to

  575. the Lord. We, we, we have an inadequate

  576. view of Jesus because we don't really want to surrender to

  577. Jesus. We no longer see him as

  578. beautiful and we've become bored in our Christianity.

  579. Oh, that we would gain a clearview of Jesus.

  580. We need to bring words back. Bring the word back that He is

  581. Lord. He's not just a song we sing or

  582. a sermon we hear. We've lost these words in the

  583. American church. Reverence to God.

  584. We don't want to say the word reverence.

  585. Have reverence for God because that might offend someone.

  586. But remember, I'd rather offend you into heaven than watch you

  587. go to hell. We want to stand on biblical

  588. orthodoxy. How about the word respect God?

  589. Respect Jesus? How about the word homage?

  590. Let's bring that one back. Let's have our worthy adoration.

  591. How about this word fear? Let's start fearing God again.

  592. How about this word stand in awe of who God is?

  593. How about we we, we find ourselves so often bored and

  594. relying on everything that we think that we need, but we have

  595. everything that we need in the person of Jesus.

  596. It's not Jesus plus my job that brings me satisfaction.

  597. It's not Jesus plus my my marriage.

  598. It's not Jesus plus my car. It's not Jesus plus my house.

  599. It is Jesus alone that satisfies the souls of humanity.

  600. It is in Jesus alone that you find safety, security, you find

  601. forgiveness and you find the justice of God meeting at the

  602. cross of Christ where sinful humanity was united with holy

  603. divinity because of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  604. Oh, that we would gain a view of Jesus.

  605. I was just in a funeral memorial service and in that time I, I

  606. was listening to Henry tell me a story of of what, what, what,

  607. what his little baby boy said to him when he was at the memorial

  608. service. He said Daddy, he said.

  609. Who is that guy up? There, hanging on the cross.

  610. It was Jesus. Hanging on the cross.

  611. But Jesus did not just hang on a.

  612. Cross for my sin. He rose again to life and power,

  613. and the goodness of God is often experienced in the intimacy that

  614. God desires to have with every single one of us.

  615. Do you see? I want you to know that your

  616. association and your ownership is with God.

  617. I was walking through. Anaheim Stadium.

  618. And they were taking me. Deep into the stadium.

  619. Doors I'd never thought that Anaheim Stadium actually had.

  620. And this is what the guy told me.

  621. He said these words to me. He said if you stay.

  622. Close to me, I will open all the doors for you to walk through.

  623. If you stay close to me. You don't have to open any door

  624. at all. I'll do this for you because I

  625. have the right and the might or the authority to do so.

  626. In like manner, Jesus opens doors that we cannot shut, and

  627. He shuts doors that we cannot open.

  628. Listen, if you are not close to Him, you will not have access.

  629. Into any of this. And that brings me back to what

  630. John Piper once said. He wrote these words in his book

  631. If You don't Feel Strong desires for the manifestation.

  632. Of the glory of God. It is not because you've drunk

  633. deeply and are satisfied. It is because you've nibbled so

  634. long at the table of the world that your soul is stuffed with

  635. small things and there's no more room for the great.

  636. Things of God. And that is where often times we

  637. find ourselves. When we stop pouring with the

  638. right perspective. And lastly, can I encourage you

  639. to do this? Pour out with trust.

  640. Pour out with trust, trust in the Lord.

  641. No, no. Notice it if you would.

  642. We, we used to sing this song. What an awesome God we serve.

  643. What an awesome God we serve. If it had not been for Jesus, oh

  644. where would I be? I'm so glad that the Lord saved

  645. me. Do you remember those times?

  646. I remember my dad. At home, Bible study would take

  647. a cassette. Do.

  648. You all remember cassettes. He would stick it in the stereo.

  649. You all remember stereos and we were led into worship through a

  650. cassette in our living room. There was no lead singer, no

  651. assisting vocalist. There was no bass player and

  652. music director. There was no drums.

  653. It was just us in our house, so in love with Jesus.

  654. We didn't even care if we were singing to a cassette because

  655. Jesus was in the room. I think sometimes we lose.

  656. That church. Becomes a place of LED walls and

  657. flashing lights and haze, but we lose the reference that Jesus

  658. our Lord is here with us even. Now and David says trust, he

  659. says trust in him at all times. Let's listen.

  660. That's a. Command in the Hebrew.

  661. Trust that means I want you to bring all of your weight to me

  662. or it means to be boldly confident in the Lord at all

  663. times and then he says pour out your heart before him.

  664. God is our refuge for. US say law.

  665. What's say law mean? What I just did there.

  666. That's what say law means. Does it feel a little awkward?

  667. Like Pastor Casey? You're supposed to say something

  668. right now. The silence, You know, someone

  669. once said that silence is golden, but sometimes it's just

  670. plain yellow. It's just feels weird.

  671. But say law means I'm willing to pause and think about what God

  672. says. What did he just say?

  673. Trust. In him.

  674. At all times, I think I like to put at sometimes in there when

  675. the easy times have come, when it's not as difficult or hard,

  676. when I fully understand what God is doing, then I'll trust Him.

  677. No, no, no, no, trust in him at all times.

  678. And he says, pour out your heart before the Lord.

  679. Do it at all times. So how do I do this?

  680. How do I trust in God at all times?

  681. I'm glad you're asking that question right now in your seat

  682. as you're sitting there. I want you to write this down.

  683. I'm going to take him at His word.

  684. I can trust in God at all times when I take him at His word.

  685. Take God at His word. If God said it, He meant it.

  686. We believe it and we obey it. Stop putting the question mark

  687. where God places a period. Take Him at His word and then I

  688. want you to do this with the letter RI want you to rest in

  689. His presence. I want you to take God at His

  690. word, and I want you to rest in His presence.

  691. I want you to rest in His presence.

  692. Will you write this down? Will you also, when you trust

  693. God, understand that the outcome does not depend on you.

  694. The outcome of things does not depend on you, it depends on the

  695. person of Jesus Christ. Will you write this down also

  696. next to the letter S just put sovereign.

  697. Jesus is sovereign, He is Lord, He's Lord of all every area of

  698. this globe and universe. Jesus is sovereign.

  699. And then realize this, when you trust the Lord, you become a

  700. testimony to other people about how God works.

  701. Songs are significant, they have impact, but they're often

  702. birthed out of very painful experiences.

  703. And this song in particular, in the early 1900s, a pastor.

  704. By the name of Horatio Spafford experienced unimaginable.

  705. Back-to-back tragedies. He lost his.

  706. Son to pneumonia. Then his fortune in the great

  707. Chicago Fire, and finally his. 4 remaining.

  708. Daughters perished when their ship sank, crossing the Atlantic

  709. to a mission trip. Traveling to meet his grieving

  710. wife, the captain told Spafford they were passing over the spot

  711. where his daughters died. And instead of.

  712. Falling into despair, Spafford took the counsel of Psalm 62,

    Psalms 62:8

  713. verse 8, and he went back to his cabin and he.

  714. Poured out his heart on that boat.

  715. He poured out his anger. He poured out his grief.

  716. He poured out his confusion. Before God admitting he could

  717. not. Bear the burden alone.

  718. In that quiet moment of absolute surrender, he felt the the peace

  719. of God. He felt the refuge of God wash

  720. over him. He sat down and he wrote the

  721. words to this. Hymn.

  722. This is what he wrote. When peace.

  723. Like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea.

  724. Billows. Roll.

  725. It is. Well, it is.

  726. Well, with my soul. Spafford demonstrated that

  727. pouring out the. Heart to God brings a profound

  728. refuge and a beautiful song that the world I cannot understand.

  729. I submit to you this morning He can hold everything you're

  730. trying to handle. Would you commit?

  731. It to Him, would you commit it to Him?

  732. And the proof of that is in the person of Jesus Christ.

  733. We could not handle our own salvation, only Jesus could.

  734. He is the spotless Lamb of God. He's the offering.

  735. So we're going to remember Jesus today.

  736. We're going to sing to Jesus today.

  737. We're going to worship the Lord. And if there was ever a time to

  738. be loud and carry on this new song to the Lord, it's today.

  739. It's today. Amen.
