  1. grow so bless what was given today Lord

  2. let it multiply tenfold so we can see

  3. your name honored and glorified in the

  4. nations in Jesus name amen amen here's

  5. Christian

  6. woo thank you good morning Psalm 51

  7. we're going to look at a song of David

  8. this morning just uh like we did a

  9. couple weeks ago but this one I I

  10. struggled with an

  11. intro and uh I kind of want to weigh up

  12. two things I want want to talk about our

  13. uh obsession with love

  14. affairs how many of you if you're

  15. honest you just love a

  16. runchy scandal just

  17. like maybe you got addicted to the OJ

  18. Simpsons Scandal years ago and uh you

  19. know the the the celebs that are just

  20. supposedly have it all together it just

  21. deeply blesses you to see their love

  22. life

  23. tarnished miserable and pathetically

  24. impossible to enjoy for more than about

  25. 5 seconds if you're just being honest

  26. with me this morning no one's going to

  27. be honest well when we call for

  28. salvation how's that going to go if you

  29. can't be honest

  30. now you're all

  31. liars well how how about ones that like

  32. feel like we're just following the news

  33. like Princess Diana and Charles like

  34. like that one's like well that's just

  35. following like Global News um but the T

  36. IDs live off that and look at their

  37. their poor children just they don't know

  38. what to do with themselves and how to

  39. identify in the world's family or out

  40. it's miserable um or maybe you're

  41. following I think the latest one Blake

  42. Lively and

  43. uh Justin B baldoni baldon something

  44. like that I actually Sue and I watch the

  45. movie simply because I like oh they've

  46. been in the news let's see what's going

  47. on there and there's something about oh

  48. this must be newsworthy people are

  49. talking about it there's there's some

  50. kind of tension with a relationship and

  51. we love it we love it we love

  52. it um the reason why I didn't want to

  53. start with that introduction is I just

  54. feel like it's

  55. too I want to put next to that okay

  56. scripture Psalm 51 is the love affair

  57. reference it's the song about the

  58. tragedy of the most intense and ugly

  59. love affair in all of scripture David

  60. and beath sheba before we jump into it

  61. though uh what I want to kind of

  62. juxtapose if you will next to this

  63. runchy love affair Obsession that we

  64. have is that scripture doesn't just give

  65. us details of things that are uh highly

  66. interesting though it does it leads us

  67. somewhere far beyond just something

  68. that's entertaining all of that stuff

  69. whether it's in a People magazine or

  70. whatever your tabloid preference

  71. is it's it's all fluff and entertainment

  72. but it's it's ultimately getting at an

  73. interest level a relational Heart level

  74. something I want to just put that aside

  75. for a moment and what I really want to

  76. get at today this love affair in Psalm

  77. 51 is only is only significant because

  78. it's the most profound Act of repentance

  79. potentially in all of

  80. scripture repentance is something that

  81. has almost been a trigger word in the

  82. church over the last I don't know couple

  83. couple decades not that we eliminate it

  84. completely but we're almost like afraid

  85. of it because of the people that just

  86. stand at the corners and just say repent

  87. and and and it just gets into this ugly

  88. religious whatever I believe that we're

  89. actually coming out of a decades long

  90. breaking and severing in the at least

  91. the American Church away from religion

  92. in this idea that the message of the

  93. Gospel is just like repent the wrath of

  94. God is after you hell damnation all

  95. these horrible things and most of you if

  96. we're being honest did not grow up in

  97. churches that that was the emphasis in

  98. fact the emphasis was much more about um

  99. you know how cool could your pastor look

  100. and how great could the music sound and

  101. and how trendy could this space be so

  102. that we can invite friends that might be

  103. like oh church is cool now and it's

  104. like it's lower lit than my living room

  105. on a Saturday night wow it's amazing

  106. maybe I'll pay attention and uh and then

  107. we we and there's nothing wrong with any

  108. of this there's we were going through a

  109. process did church have to look like

  110. this or could it also look like this

  111. could the music sound like this or could

  112. it also sound like

  113. this when I was in college there was um

  114. I I've told this before Rick Warren many

  115. of you know Rick Warren um he's down in

  116. the the south in the Bible Belt Orange

  117. County

  118. but um when he planted the church in the

  119. the California Bible Belt um he actually

  120. looked at where was the most unchurch

  121. the biggest potential ever I was

  122. interesting to see his process uh and

  123. Saddleback Church the church he planted

  124. uh grew to be uh the largest church in

  125. the in the country and uh they they I

  126. honestly honor him we we we bash mega

  127. church pastors and we love to bash

  128. Orange County pastors and I will and I

  129. commit to you that I always will so even

  130. though I'm not going to do that today I

  131. commit to you I will go back to bashing

  132. Orange County pastors people and

  133. everything that I possibly

  134. can but for the moment I just want to

  135. honor Rick Warren he retired recently I

  136. think a year or two or three ago um

  137. there was the pastor that ended well do

  138. you know that that happens pastors end

  139. well that just makes somebody's day it

  140. makes my

  141. day all and uh even though he he had he

  142. has the the bestselling book of the last

  143. 50 years bestselling Christian book of

  144. the last 50 years you have to go back to

  145. like CS well even CS Lewis I'm not sure

  146. beats that tolken and and those guys

  147. they sold a little bit better but but in

  148. literally modern Christian books nothing

  149. has has touched the Purpose Driven Life

  150. uh why do I say all that well in college

  151. I went out there we were on spring break

  152. with some friends um I was in the

  153. process of trying to move to California

  154. for carnal reasons I eventually we would

  155. move to California for Spiritual reasons

  156. uh but at the time uh we were like oh

  157. let's just go check out Saddleback it

  158. was like the only church I knew of in in

  159. Southern California and uh I literally

  160. don't remember a thing it was fine it's

  161. good I don't remember anything other

  162. than they had like a really cool

  163. Fountain that's all I kind of remember

  164. and uh I think the message was good I

  165. don't remember anything like it's

  166. literally kind of like whatever um but

  167. they they're very influential Church

  168. what what I love about what he

  169. emphasized is he he says that the the

  170. key to their impact was that they

  171. emphasized the the depth and intimacy of

  172. community above everything else and they

  173. bragged about bragged that's the wrong

  174. term he they valued that their church

  175. had more people in their Community

  176. groups than than Sunday attendants and I

  177. thought that was huge and they they

  178. obsessed over the intimate places while

  179. they grew wider and whatever else so

  180. there's a church that despite the fact

  181. that he had his son pass away of suicide

  182. went through tragic horrible hard things

  183. and still came out giving God praise

  184. being vulnerable and raw in the process

  185. so wonderful wonderful wonderful stuff

  186. there um this weekend I was reading of a

  187. of a pastor um that just came back from

  188. Saddleback and I think that uh how many

  189. of you were here maybe year and a half

  190. ago when I talked about something

  191. happening in Asbury um a renewal of

  192. students and so forth a couple years ago

  193. there was this um I guess they just

  194. called it the Asbury Revival and a bunch

  195. of college students just lingered after

  196. a chapel and it turned into this

  197. phenomenon where tens of thousands of

  198. people flocked to nowheresville Kentucky

  199. for for multiple multiple weeks to to

  200. listen to to like rough college students

  201. just strumming songs from the 90s and

  202. 2000s in a Holiness and repentance and

  203. Beauty just broke out and they refused

  204. to have the big names up front loved it

  205. loved it and I feel like it represented

  206. something it was probably the last time

  207. I've referenced something happening

  208. culturally of a move of God and I feel

  209. like that was the precursors of

  210. something that our nation is longing for

  211. the raw real authentic we're putting

  212. aside as as fine as it can be the bells

  213. and whistles and fog lights and

  214. whatever the performance we want the

  215. real repentant heart of the Gospel to

  216. come that's what we actually want we

  217. want our hearts

  218. transformed and so in that still my

  219. introduction by the way by the

  220. way this is this is a two-part message

  221. so my plan today is to just introduce it

  222. crash land it hope something is there

  223. for you to take away with and then the

  224. real message is next

  225. week but so this is my very long I I may

  226. never get out of the introduction so

  227. it's okay you're still going to get out

  228. at the same time it's fine the the but

  229. the idea that I want to get before us

  230. today is that there there was a move

  231. happening where a real raw authentic

  232. Holiness and a repentance spirit and

  233. heart was there and and and I feel like

  234. the breaking of religion has has just

  235. been something that we can go back to

  236. the concept of what what our issue with

  237. sin and our need of real forgiveness

  238. looks like in a way that we're not

  239. thinking about this kind of uh Uber

  240. spiritual unhelpful

  241. ugly you're a sinner type of

  242. message but more about like I'm hungry

  243. for the go goel to reveal the absolute

  244. impossible Brokenness of my heart and to

  245. show me what's possible to give me a

  246. renewed

  247. heart Psalm

  248. 51 says this have mercy on me oh God

  249. according to your steadfast love last

  250. week I told you how there was a key in

  251. the little words before the psalm

  252. there's one in this one as well this one

  253. a Psalm of David to the choir Master

  254. when Nathan the Prophet went to him

  255. after he had gone into beath Sheba so

  256. the prophet of Israel Nathan calls David

  257. out for this horrific Affair this is way

  258. worse than you think it is than I

  259. thought it was and as I as I often do I

  260. love to look at really familiar passages

  261. in Scripture that we think we know and

  262. then realize H it's so much more intense

  263. than you realize we think that David and

  264. bath Sheba if you're not familiar with

  265. the story King David the greatest King

  266. in all of Israel the line of the Royal

  267. line of David is what the Messiah came

  268. through Christ is a as a descendant of

  269. of David there there's this there's this

  270. common story or kids draw coloring books

  271. to it in Sunday school class where David

  272. should have gone to war and he's walking

  273. around bored he sees this beautiful

  274. woman and he calls her to his chamber he

  275. sleeps with her she gets pregnant he

  276. tries to cover it up uh tries to draw

  277. her husband back Uriah who was one of

  278. his men soldiers and and the the guy

  279. doesn't doesn't doesn't sleep with her

  280. he's too righteous and and then goes

  281. back to war and David lets him go into a

  282. dangerous area lets him get killed and

  283. then tries to cover it up and then

  284. marri's Beth

  285. Sheba and the prophet calls him out on

  286. it and what we see is and then

  287. ultimately that he repents and we go ah

  288. David yeah had a rough week but man does

  289. that guy have a beautiful heart love his

  290. song such a good worship leader

  291. man that's what all we do with it I

  292. there's two things that may or may not

  293. happen today what I hope happens is that

  294. you get into a almost feel a heavier

  295. weight of David's sin than you ever felt

  296. before good news then the second part is

  297. that you would resist the urge to

  298. separate yourself from identifying with

  299. David because you have never done

  300. anything close to as evil as David did

  301. so that's the Temptation I'm going to

  302. hit you with the heaviness of David's

  303. sin and then the Temptation is going to

  304. be through comparison that you're able

  305. to go I'm nothing like that if you do

  306. that you are missing the entire

  307. invitation and beauty of this passage

  308. I'm not going to say you're you you've

  309. done stuff just as bad as David I'm not

  310. David actually breaks six of the Ten

  311. Commandments all in one Fell

  312. Swoop and he might have done the others

  313. but like how do you dishonor your mother

  314. and I mean it was probably dishonoring

  315. his mother and father too all these

  316. different things that that he probably

  317. still broke in the midst of

  318. this but here's here's what happened at

  319. Saddleback just this past weekend as we

  320. lead into this passage this pastor that

  321. was just

  322. there said there was a Prof it was

  323. profound to see a church again Rick

  324. Warren has passed this church off and

  325. how many of you know that often times

  326. passing a church off to the next

  327. generation is impossible it never goes

  328. well I it might go fine but it usually

  329. like either ends in in a death or a slow

  330. death or or just like a

  331. blah I pray that never happens here I

  332. pray that when my time is up that

  333. Frontier would finally be able to get

  334. breakthrough and is like I'm serious I I

  335. do but that is actually that should be

  336. every pastor's heart is this the next

  337. generation is a stepping stone it's

  338. probably it's this is probably a

  339. compliment for Rick Warren the fact that

  340. he did also did something where when his

  341. in his absence in the Next Generation

  342. they're now stepping into something

  343. that's different but that's building

  344. upon the foundation that they LED

  345. maybe but this pastor there I've never

  346. seen a

  347. profound shift from one identity to

  348. another in a major church that

  349. represents an entire movement he says

  350. there's a hunger to shift towards the

  351. presence of God pursuing the Manifest

  352. presence of God now he wasn't saying

  353. that Saddleback didn't care about the

  354. presence of God but when you think of

  355. out about you think of like just the

  356. American Church from the last 30 years

  357. the good things of it but just the

  358. realities of it maybe they called a

  359. three-day solemn assembly called the

  360. return Gathering to call the church back

  361. to the heart of God away from

  362. complacency self-righteousness and

  363. relying on the past and stretching into

  364. the future the quote the final

  365. night from the from the pastor of the

  366. church was turning to God and turning

  367. away from the wrath of God

  368. using a quote of Jonathan Edwards

  369. sinners in the hands of an Angry

  370. God and the invitation was simply repent

  371. and there was a holy conviction of sin

  372. that was

  373. beautiful and he said this pastor that

  374. observed all this was saying he believes

  375. this is a prototype of what God is doing

  376. in the American

  377. Church drawing Us near preparing our

  378. hearts in the invitation prepare your

  379. hearts prepare the church there are days

  380. of the glory of God Among Us and it's

  381. time to return to the

  382. Lord I think that is a one paragraph

  383. summary if you want to know what our

  384. hearts are at

  385. Frontier we want to be a

  386. people that prepare our hearts that

  387. prepare the

  388. church that don't cry out for Revival

  389. that cry out to be people by whom he can

  390. unleash his

  391. Revival and you cannot ask for a Revival

  392. if you are not asking for a renewed

  393. heart that comes through the Forgiveness

  394. of

  395. repentance the cry for Revival and

  396. renewal has to be built on the

  397. foundation of the cry to create in me a

  398. clean heart oh God and renew a a right

  399. spirit within

  400. me that's the prayer for

  401. Revival and so what's holding us back

  402. three things are holding us back I may

  403. or may not get into it here in my

  404. introduction but there are three things

  405. holding us back I believe and these are

  406. themes that we talk about often we're

  407. going to Target them through the lens of

  408. this passage the number one thing is

  409. comparison I'm not like anyone else I'm

  410. not like David my my problems are unique

  411. I hate myself but I'm the most unique

  412. special flower in the universe and no

  413. one understands

  414. me but but here the Temptation again is

  415. going to be I'm not like David I've

  416. never done anything as severe as David

  417. that's not the point I'll tell you why

  418. the other element is guilt now many of

  419. us have gone to the Lord to take care of

  420. our guilt and we still carry the guilt

  421. there's like a process where we've done

  422. surgery to remove the shrapnel but it's

  423. still there the Pain's still there the

  424. infection still there and there's

  425. something in here for us to see that

  426. like the Lord wants to do the Deep work

  427. but sometimes whether whether it's the

  428. church itself that hasn't shown us what

  429. this looks like to do this well or or

  430. it's simply that we haven't allowed the

  431. Lord to do the Deep process of

  432. completely completely allowing us to be

  433. so broken in not taking any credit or

  434. Identity or performance of any shape or

  435. form how can David possibly sing a song

  436. of Victory and blessing and God's

  437. goodness from what he's done we'll look

  438. at that in a moment and and finally it's

  439. a false Vision comparison guilt and

  440. false Vision we do not have God's sight

  441. we have our

  442. sight okay so back to the psalm have

  443. mercy on me oh God according to your

  444. steadfast love according to your

  445. abundant Mercy blot out my

  446. transgressions Wash Me thoroughly from

  447. my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin

  448. for I know my transgressions and my sin

  449. is ever before me against you only you

  450. have I sinned and done what is evil in

  451. your sight what he is not saying is that

  452. he hasn't sinned against everyone else

  453. what I'll show you in a moment is he has

  454. sinned against everyone else in his

  455. entire Kingdom and his entire

  456. house he's not saying this he's saying

  457. that here's the issue I've put myself on

  458. the

  459. throne but you're the only one that has

  460. ultimate authority of right and wrong we

  461. are craving in our society modern

  462. society secularism whatever you want to

  463. look at it today we do not know how to

  464. look at an ultimate Authority and say

  465. this is right and wrong and so we right

  466. now have a country we have a culture

  467. that has no idea how to define what's

  468. right and wrong we we debate over morals

  469. because we have no standard for our

  470. morals and the Christians keep going

  471. like well it's the Bible but no one

  472. cares about the Bible unless they've met

  473. Jesus so how do we how do we debate or

  474. how do we in exchange and how do we

  475. wrestle with a culture that doesn't

  476. respect the word of God in the same way

  477. that we do you have to demonstrate a

  478. clean heart and so why does it why is it

  479. so hard for Christians when you've got

  480. obnoxious people that agree with us on

  481. on on some things maybe that are then

  482. spewing a kind of heart they can't

  483. possibly see the face of Jesus and we

  484. wonder why our culture is so confused

  485. and why they don't all agree with our

  486. morals that seem so

  487. sound well how about we just we stop

  488. with the moralism for a moment and just

  489. remind ourselves thank God that I am not

  490. God

  491. where I sit on the throne of my own life

  492. thank God that I do not have to

  493. say follow my heart to figure this

  494. out I think I'll tell tell this um

  495. example next week but um how many of you

  496. remember 9020

  497. childhood you guys do not want to

  498. interact with me today okay whatever

  499. 9020 Beverly Hills Tory Spelling any

  500. fans yeah all right

  501. she's an interesting character by the

  502. way I I have been profound she I believe

  503. her father Aaron spilling was like he

  504. was the guru like multi multi

  505. multi-billionaire and she was recently

  506. like I think living in a trailer like

  507. for fun like she's just like rejecting

  508. all this whatever she's a really

  509. interesting character anyway she there's

  510. this one scene in 92 and0 where she goes

  511. to a priest to seek guidance I think for

  512. sleeping with her boyfriend or something

  513. like that um I stole this example from

  514. Keller I'll I'll share it more next week

  515. but the the idea was this this priest in

  516. 90210 tells her to follow her

  517. heart and she I mean the connotation is

  518. kind of like well was kind of she came

  519. to the priest for advice she's like

  520. doing she's doing her part and he's

  521. going follow your heart like how does

  522. that work out there's plenty of people

  523. that followed their heart and they

  524. they're and they go off and murder

  525. someone like David followed his heart

  526. didn't work out

  527. well Hitler followed his heart I a lot

  528. of people follow their heart like at

  529. what point can you just say your heart's

  530. wrong and his color goes if if he would

  531. have told

  532. her rightly what to do with the heart he

  533. would have actually had to do his job

  534. but the priest in this set setting

  535. didn't and that's one of the issues that

  536. we have in culture is that we haven't

  537. done our job to show what it looks like

  538. to follow the

  539. heart David didn't follow his heart

  540. Jesus isn't called the son of David

  541. because Jesus followed his heart or

  542. David followed his heart Jesus is called

  543. the son of David and the lion of the

  544. tribe of Judah because these are the two

  545. men in Scripture that showed us

  546. repentance Judah is the first example in

  547. all of scripture to repent many of you

  548. don't know judah's story I've told it

  549. before but that's the literally the

  550. first example of repentance in all the

  551. scripture David is the most significant

  552. the deepest most horrific turn of

  553. repentance that you see in all of

  554. scripture and Jesus's name the only two

  555. names Jesus gets that are that are human

  556. beings son of David Lion of the tribe of

  557. Judah are two men who

  558. repented God wants you to know if you if

  559. you want to go to the standard of Jesus

  560. the only man who never had to

  561. repent learn the power the power of the

  562. miracle of

  563. forgiveness only comes when we surrender

  564. to the process of repentance and allow

  565. the Deep work to happen in our lives so

  566. here's how horrible this story

  567. is this is the biggest tabloid in Bible

  568. History

  569. history David knew exactly what he

  570. wanted to do this is all if you want the

  571. background go read it in your quiet time

  572. this week week's second Samuel 11:1 12

    2 Samuel 11:1

  573. I'm not going to have the scriptures up

  574. there I'm just summarizing it for you

  575. because again introduction I've got five

  576. minutes this is not the first time baath

  577. Sheba was bathing I have actually taught

  578. at times that he that you know that she

  579. probably was enticing him this and that

  580. they bathed on the roof though and the

  581. scripture actually makes very clear that

  582. she has no blame in this matter

  583. whatsoever what you need know about her

  584. was that she was not some nobody that

  585. just looked amazingly attractive to a

  586. King what happened was her husband Uriah

  587. is one of David's key Warriors her

  588. father she's the daughter of Elam he was

  589. one of David's Mighty Men you know the

  590. guys that defended him against King Saul

  591. when Saul sought to take his life for

  592. years that's her dad her

  593. grandfather is one of David's most

  594. trusted advisor ERS and is currently in

  595. the king's

  596. court meaning like all of David's

  597. Messengers to to pull this horrible

  598. Scandal off are literally going through

  599. her

  600. grandfather so this is not hidden her

  601. dad's going to know about this her

  602. grandfather's going to know about this

  603. and her husband's the only one that's

  604. not going to know about this and he's

  605. going to be

  606. murdered there's no way people don't

  607. know that this is happen happening this

  608. is so

  609. public was she raped by David that's

  610. also a thing that's come up often maybe

  611. but that's not actually the emphasis

  612. that goes on here there's probably no

  613. way that she would refuse a king in that

  614. setting but that doesn't mean it's her

  615. fault the issue is that David is doing

  616. an evil evil act that he knows he's

  617. going to do before he does it and

  618. there's a reason why he doesn't go off

  619. to war it says at the beginning of that

  620. passage in Samuel when the time came

  621. when kings go off the war David stayed

  622. why because he knew that UAH would be

  623. gone and his wife would be there and he

  624. would have an opportunity to do this and

  625. yet he knows he can't pull it off

  626. without many many many many many

  627. servants going and doing his dirty work

  628. and he knows that all these people are

  629. eventually going to find out he knows

  630. that her dad's going to find out her

  631. grandfather's going to find out and

  632. everyone's going to know and he does it

  633. anyway his heart is right rotten to the

  634. core the man after God's Own Heart is

  635. rotten to the

  636. core one of the things we see about how

  637. ugly his heart is is it says about Beth

  638. Sheba after this act where he comes uh

  639. brings her in sleeps with her she leaves

  640. and she does what the levitical law

  641. requires and and she goes and has a

  642. ritual

  643. bath David does not which shows us

  644. something it shows us the purity of her

  645. heart and it shows us that David has

  646. already shoved off the Lord long before

  647. these actions have

  648. happened this wasn't just a momentary

  649. thing David has an ugly side and the

  650. public already is starting to know there

  651. are countless unnamed people in his

  652. court that have pulled this off she

  653. finds out she's pregnant he tries to get

  654. Uriah home to sleep with her he doesn't

  655. UAH sleeps at the door won't go in his

  656. own house

  657. he even gets Uriah drunk which also for

  658. those of you that you know have got

  659. stories where it's like I was just drunk

  660. well there are some stories also that

  661. even when you're drunk you can have

  662. character and that's what's actually

  663. being shown here is the absolute beauty

  664. of uriah's character and the debauchery

  665. of David's

  666. character and so UAH despite being drunk

  667. despite being home and having his wife

  668. right there he refuses to go in and have

  669. any pleasure while his men are on the

  670. battlefield and you know what David says

  671. he makes a comment that attacks if you

  672. understand the language he's attacking

  673. uriah's masculinity like what kind of

  674. man wouldn't take advantage of that

  675. what's wrong with

  676. you meanwhile this man is going to go

  677. back into battle for his

  678. King David is going to put him in a

  679. dangerous situation and then make the

  680. men who have sacrificed their lives for

  681. him that have lived an entire an entire

  682. culture of Honor in the military he's

  683. going to require these men to pull back

  684. and abandon their leader and watch him

  685. die so David is going to pull other

  686. people into his murderous

  687. plot and then when it's all said and

  688. done he makes this horrible excuse and

  689. dismisses it that shows the hardness of

  690. his heart says don't let this displease

  691. you for the sword devours one as well as

  692. another that's in second Samuel 11 what

  693. does that mean he's basically saying uh

  694. you know it's just

  695. battle and then the prophet Nathan calls

  696. him

  697. out and literally tells him that he's

  698. despised the word of the Lord meaning

  699. that Nathan is basically saying the sin

  700. that you have done is so is so heinous

  701. so

  702. dark it's like you have no you have no

  703. connection to the Lord your

  704. God so what's happening this is this

  705. this is exposing our core issue the

  706. Temptation though most of us have never

  707. killed another person most of us you

  708. like that most of us just want to make

  709. space you know just in

  710. case and if you have I hope you're done

  711. yeah most of us have never had an

  712. affair despite that most of

  713. us in fact maybe all of us carry some

  714. sense of guilt some sense of

  715. unworthiness some sense of shame that we

  716. cannot seem to shake maybe not daily

  717. maybe

  718. daily maybe Moment by

  719. moment but what this Psalm shows us is

  720. that David who should be carrying shame

  721. unworthiness and guilt the rest of his

  722. life do

  723. not if you're if you are a peer of

  724. David's in any way shape or form you

  725. look at him and the only thing you

  726. should feel is I hope he feels guilty

  727. the rest of his

  728. life and David does not feel guilty the

  729. rest of his

  730. life I just want to take you back back

  731. to the

  732. ssong we'll get into more detail next

  733. week verse four against you only you

  734. have I sinned and done what is evil in

  735. your sight he's recognizing his

  736. sin hide your face from my sins verse 9

  737. blot out all my iniquities and then

  738. verse 10 then we're we're going to sing

  739. this in

  740. response create in me a clean heart oh

  741. God and renew a right Spirit within

  742. me he's a man after God's Own Heart

  743. because God gave him his

  744. heart human beings cannot have God's

  745. heart David's heart is nothing like

  746. God's you're not trying to live a life

  747. where your heart's like

  748. David's you're trying to face the fact

  749. that your

  750. heart has no hope apart from God

  751. renewing it and cleaning it and most of

  752. us if we're trying to wrestle with

  753. comparison can prop ourselves up and say

  754. thank God I've never done anything that

  755. bad you know there's if you're being

  756. real if I'm being real I think about

  757. this pretty regularly what what are the

  758. kinds of things that if they happened to

  759. me or if I did I couldn't live with

  760. myself my kids just went on a a plane

  761. ride four of my five kids went on a

  762. plane ride with my with my wife um the

  763. other day someone also I I know I've

  764. mentioned you many times we have five

  765. kids two on purpose and all of that but

  766. the the thing that I that I I also

  767. mentioned that I love kids but I don't

  768. love kids that much I love my

  769. wife I love my wife a lot uh that's how

  770. that happens so if you're wondering just

  771. this wasn't a plan even though we are in

  772. population collapse and we need to do

  773. our part

  774. but there's don't give me too much

  775. credit but I will say once once we've

  776. had them I embrace

  777. them and I love them a whole lot like

  778. I'll die for them every single one of

  779. them and when when when six of the most

  780. important people in my life all get on

  781. one plane and I'm not on it like I need

  782. to distract myself you know there's too

  783. many there's too many things happening

  784. right now on the airwaves and planes

  785. running running into helicopters and

  786. whatever else I know the odds are still

  787. in my favor but the the thing is is that

  788. I think about if they all

  789. died would I be able to like ever love

  790. the Lord again if I'm honest I don't

  791. know my theology says yes the history of

  792. the church even tells me it's

  793. possible everything I'm doing here is

  794. like well I

  795. better but I don't I don't

  796. know mess me up would I ever get over

  797. that

  798. or and that's not even something I

  799. did what if what if I got drunk one

  800. night and killed somebody how do you get

  801. over

  802. that and even that is like a secondary

  803. thing in nothing compared to

  804. David and we probably all know someone

  805. that's in some sort of situation like

  806. that some of you are probably still

  807. living with the guilt of one bad

  808. decision in your life and maybe you've

  809. asked forgiveness maybe you've tried to

  810. do all the right repentance work and you

  811. still have have that ache in your

  812. soul and then you look at David here who

  813. says creating me a clean heart renew a

  814. right Spirit restore to me the joy of

  815. your salvation and uphold me with a

  816. willing Spirit then I will teach

  817. transgressors your ways and sinners will

  818. return to you he he in in a couple lines

  819. of a song He's acknowledging that if God

  820. gives him a clean heart if God doesn't

  821. cast him away from his presence which he

  822. saying to the Lord this is who you are

  823. despite who I am this is who you are you

  824. don't cast us away for our absolute

  825. horrific you restore Joy the joy of your

  826. salvation and uphold me then if you do

  827. that to me

  828. God you'll use me he sees he sees hope

  829. to not just be forgiven but to be

  830. utilized that that the pain would have

  831. purpose

  832. and that's the number one way that you

  833. know whether you have fully experienced

  834. the joy of repentance and forgiveness of

  835. God is have you allowed the pain to have

  836. purpose and then he goes on my tongue

  837. will sing aloud of your righteousness my

  838. mouth will declare your praise he's he's

  839. getting into this reality that how and

  840. this is where it should offend

  841. you comparison says I'm not like David

  842. so thank God I don't have to deal with

  843. that guilt the reality says is the

  844. gospel is telling us that David has done

  845. the worst series of things you could

  846. possibly do that's worse than yours and

  847. here's what bothers me and here's what

  848. should bother you he's done the worst

  849. things you can imagine and he is

  850. experiencing a greater breakthrough a

  851. Greater Joy and a greater victory in his

  852. life than you and I who haven't done

  853. anything close to that bad

  854. how how is a man in an inferior Covenant

  855. experiencing a superior blessing how is

  856. a man who has done the most horrific

  857. things way worse than you or I

  858. experiencing a better life of

  859. joy and overflow than you and I how is

  860. this guy have now the heart that God

  861. says he's giving to his

  862. son what it should be is how is it

  863. that he gets to experience this and you

  864. and I are still rattled by comparison

  865. guilt and identity

  866. crisis is anyone else does this hit

  867. anyone else this is this is this is this

  868. is why this offends me and it should

  869. offend you it should offend us that he's

  870. sitting

  871. here singing

  872. songs about how great God is

  873. while we're dealing with our

  874. unworthiness guilt and

  875. shame for things that aren't nearly as

  876. bad and I I would look across the room I

  877. don't know all of your lives but I know

  878. enough about most of you and I see lives

  879. of faithfulness I see lives that have

  880. made good decisions that have done so

  881. much

  882. right but the gospel says is that you'll

  883. never have the joy of your salvation

  884. because of how much right you've done

  885. the joy of your salvation purely

  886. comes from how you are not

  887. depending on the

  888. actions of your right

  889. living to prop up your self-esteem and

  890. identity you will only experience the

  891. depths of this kind of joy of the

  892. Gospel when

  893. you stop trying to let your

  894. heart earn its

  895. right and I don't like that part of the

  896. gospel because it it and it's the best

  897. part are you with me on that is there

  898. anyone else that's like you don't even

  899. like the best part of the Gospel

  900. El that's my

  901. introduction our problem is we don't

  902. like the best part of the gospel because

  903. my whole life all my actions are built

  904. at being able to have something to offer

  905. for my

  906. life have something to give the Lord

  907. with my life and he's basically saying

  908. the man after his own heart has nothing

  909. to give him his heart's absolute garbage

  910. and he gets the clean

  911. heart and my heart's almost clean but he

  912. can't do anything with it till I let him

  913. trash it and give me a new

  914. one so where is your heart still still

  915. trying to keep itself breathing in an

  916. air that it was never meant to

  917. breathe if the team could come up I need

  918. to land this and it helps when there's

  919. music playing and it reminds me I need

  920. to stop preaching and start applying

  921. here's here's what I want us to do

  922. what's holding us back comparison guilt

  923. or an identity

  924. crisis there's this and I'll tell this

  925. really quickly I've I told this about a

  926. year ago I think we have this issue in

  927. in

  928. culture self the modern self there's a

  929. debate between a traditional self and a

  930. modern self Charles Taylor who's a

  931. Catholic philosopher he wrote the

  932. sources of the self the making of the

  933. modern

  934. identity and he said I don't believe you

  935. can understand modern culture without

  936. understanding unique modern identity we

  937. look at three questions you and

  938. I what do I live for that's the main

  939. thing what defines

  940. us am I reaching it what do I live for

  941. am I reaching that

  942. thing and ultimately then the is becomes

  943. the third question who gives the final

  944. verdict on what defines me what I'm

  945. reaching

  946. for who gets to have a say every culture

  947. directs its members to an identity

  948. without telling them or asking their

  949. permission what it's

  950. doing and you and I need to be aware

  951. that everything around us is pulling

  952. us towards a voice that is defined by

  953. saying look

  954. inside you define what's right for you

  955. you determine what's right and

  956. wrong and hope for the

  957. best and even though I've been following

  958. Jesus for many years I still feel

  959. myself still trying to measure up my

  960. life based on kind of does my heart feel

  961. like I'm doing a good job with right and

  962. wrong and I get pulled into this

  963. moralistic false

  964. gospel and what's really going on here

  965. is that there's there's this outside

  966. vers inside

  967. voice and we have to

  968. understand that the way of Christ is

  969. allowing someone else to speak your life

  970. over you something else to say this is

  971. right and wrong something else to say

  972. this is how the created order works this

  973. is where your heart fails

  974. and the gospel says the beauty is what

  975. is this God like what is this artist

  976. like what is this creator of all things

  977. like could he actually be good could he

  978. actually take the Brokenness of our

  979. hearts could he actually take our guilt

  980. and

  981. shame could he give us could he give us

  982. these examples of ultimate scandals of

  983. Broken Love broken identity broken

  984. purpose and show us how we can have a

  985. renewed heart a clean

  986. [Music]

  987. heart and I just want to invite you if

  988. you're with me this morning and you

  989. need and you want to step into a greater

  990. measure of experiencing a

  991. renewal I just want to invite you to

  992. stand and you're going to join me in

  993. praying over my heart and yours

  994. that this house would be part of a move

  995. of our nation and

  996. [Music]

  997. Beyond we don't reject right and wrong

  998. we reject the ability to attain it we

  999. start with I'm

  1000. wrong and I need a clean

  1001. [Music]

1002. heart I want to invite some of you that

1003. are still lingering on pain and shame

  1004. from Years Gone

1005. by would you just bring that to the Lord

1006. open your hands to him in

1007. worship and I just ask you with the last

1008. shred of Hope in your

1009. being give that to him and see what he

1010. says holy spirit on behalf of the people

1011. everyone one of us that is still dealing

  1012. with an open

1013. wound from this week or 20 or 30 or 40

  1014. years

  1015. [Music]

1016. past we ask for the strength to bring

  1017. those before

  1018. you clean our

1019. hearts those of us struggling with the

1020. pride of comparison The Pride of I've

1021. done so well I've done all the right

  1022. things where is the

  1023. [Music]

1024. Lord It's very possible to have guilt

1025. and pride in the same breath cuz that's

1026. me one moment I feel impossibly guilty

1027. and shameful the next impossibly

1028. prideful but I've done all this I've

1029. done it all right where are you

1030. God create in me a clean

  1031. heart create create

1032. renew not take my pretty much good

  1033. almost perfect

  1034. heart I want a new

1035. one and if this is the first time you've

1036. ever prayed that prayer and this is the

1037. first time you've met God I want you to

1038. find me after the service I just want to

1039. join you with that prayer if you don't

1040. know how to pray here's the

  1041. [Music]

  1042. prayer take me

  1043. God all of me

  1046. new David was seeing

1047. something this song he doesn't even go

1048. into the sacrificial system of the day

1049. because he sees it at the heart of

  1050. Israel's sacrificial system there's a

1051. greater atonement it always pointed to

1052. something it wasn't about the physical

1053. act of sacrifice it was about what is

1054. God like he's the one that atones and

1055. he's looking to God to be his ultimate

1056. covering for everything he's done done

1057. wrong and that's the gospel and that's

1058. who Jesus came to be to be the ultimate

1059. sacrifice it isn't some weirdo thing on

1060. a cross it's not some crazy idea Christ

1061. came to be the ultimate place to go

1063. Beginning it's impossible to do this on

1064. your own and Christ says come to me know

1065. me follow me I'm for

1067. and he prayed the Prayer of Salvation

1068. there was an absolute Miracle of

  1069. forgiveness and the absolute
