  1. so kind it was 4:00 a.m. Phil not 5 did

  2. you get it

  3. right hey you do whatever you have to

  4. new place but um this is just outrageous

  5. as uh to to do this again I I was

  6. thinking in a couple months let's move

  7. to another location and um and then just

  8. see what what comes it's just it's been

  9. a wild couple months we just get started

  10. here and then the hardest thing physical

  11. thing to hit our community maybe ever

  12. and now we're back just like two seconds

  13. went by in the midst of that um I just

  14. want to thank all of you for just the

  15. incredible outpouring of love and

  16. support you've given each other uh as

  17. well as this body and

  18. uh I am in what I feel like is the last

  19. couple months the fires did one thing

  20. and then on another level it feels like

  21. my heart is being tenderized to a place

  22. where I I can feel and any given MO is

  23. this the right mic if I give I feel like

  24. it's got a lot of Reverb if I'm on the

  25. wrong one one of you tell me that knows

  26. what's going on um but I feel like my

  27. heart's been tenderized in a way that I

  28. feel like we're we're in a sometimes

  29. it's just for myself other times when I

  30. feel something for an extended season

  31. it's it's for the community and I feel

  32. like this is one of those Seasons where

  33. we're to be in an extended tenderized

  34. time allowing the Lord to look at our

  35. hearts look at our discipleship on to

  36. Jesus look at how the world is

  37. positioning us to pull us away from that

  38. and how do we step into it our vision as

  39. a church is renewing the beauty of Jesus

  40. on the frontiers of modern culture what

  41. that means is it's first and foremost

  42. about

  43. Jesus why we're going after a renewal

  44. meaning that the church is to come back

  45. to the heart of what Jesus established

  46. and we're to do that not by separating

  47. from the culture but by investing into

  48. it the the Val values that we've

  49. anchored on are that we are word and

  50. spirit that we are a missional family

  51. that the good news the Gospel of Jesus

  52. is power and that we worship in a realm

  53. called the beauty of God's holiness to

  54. quote the Psalms in that the word in

  55. spirit means that we are anchored in

  56. scripture and we're moved by his

  57. Spirit there is never a more critical

  58. time than that than right now we've got

  59. to be anchored in scripture if you're

  60. new to the church or you're new to or or

  61. you just have heard things like you know

  62. the church is all about the word of God

  63. and whatever that means we go after that

  64. hopefully pretty often the word of God

  65. is something that's the most manipulated

  66. misused and abused

  67. concept uh and dynamic that the church

  68. sometimes gets and oftentimes misses but

  69. it's why we do everything out out of

  70. scripture not because we worship

  71. writings that were made by men but

  72. because there's something here that's

  73. tangible that has tested time and that

  74. tells the testimony of God among men in

  75. the midst of that we are looking for a

  76. standard that we can set our lives to

  77. the modern lie of modern Western

  78. individualistic Society secularism

  79. whatever you want to call it the the the

  80. root lie is we can't trust any Authority

  81. we can't trust an ultimate Authority let

  82. alone

  83. God and if you can't trust God there's

  84. no testimony and certainly no scriptures

  85. that I have to look so I just pick and

  86. choose what I'd like which doesn't work

  87. over time it can work for a moment it

  88. doesn't work over time the reason why it

  89. doesn't work over time is because I

  90. can't pick and choose things and decide

  91. what the ultimate right and wrong is if

  92. I'm saying that I can pick and choose

  93. what's right and wrong for me then I can

  94. pick and choose technically what's right

  95. and wrong for you or society and we're

  96. never going to agree on anything because

  97. we're not under anything that says this

  98. is true

  99. north and what the church is meant to be

  100. is to show despite our flaws that's just

  101. like everyone else out

  102. there we discover and ReDiscover A

  103. Renewed beauty of true north of the one

  104. true light of the only thing that can

  105. atone and deal with my guilt with my

  106. shame with my anxiety with the

  107. oppressive spirit that being a human

  108. puts on my

  109. life and in that I don't pretend to be

  110. joyful I don't pretend that nothing

  111. bad's happened to me I don't make

  112. excuses for suffering

  113. I have the only thing that has an answer

  114. to suffering and that's that suffering

  115. has a purpose because this life is not

  116. the end because there's an ultimate

  117. Authority and there is a creator that

  118. has had intention with every single one

  119. of us and he loves us and he wants to

  120. speak to us so we're going to let him

  121. speak to us today please turn to Psalm

  122. 51 Psalm 51 is a Psalm of David if you

  123. weren't here last week that was part one

  124. this is part two I was in Psalm 51 but

  125. Psalm 51 to understand it you have to

  126. understand 2 Samuel 11:2 the Psalms were

    2 Samuel 11:2

  127. written by a man named David who was

  128. king of Israel has a phenomenal story in

  129. in the scriptures David uh has a lot of

  130. things culturally that people love about

  131. him uh the first time I saw him was

  132. naked in Italy that was

  133. awkward I don't think I realized that

  134. was him and someone pointed out and and

  135. um anyway I wasn't I took a picture and

  136. someone got really mad I wasn't supposed

  137. to do that

  138. apparently and uh but he was from from

  139. we have his whole life basically David

  140. Jesus we get little glimpses going up we

  141. basically know David all the way through

  142. his

  143. life and we know that he had highs and

  144. lows all the way through and we know

  145. David as a man after God's Own Heart but

  146. he wasn't a man after God's Own Heart

  147. because he could sing beautiful songs

  148. and and God loved his worship he was a

  149. man after God's Own Heart because he had

  150. the ugliest coldest hardest most

  151. disgusting farthest from God heart you

  152. can ever imagine he sinned and committed

  153. the most heinous crimes against humanity

  154. and God that you could ever imagine and

  155. the reason why he's a man after God's

  156. Own Heart is because he let God give him

  157. a new

  158. one and you and I have three Temptations

  159. when we look at the subject today of

  160. forgiveness we can compare to David and

  161. say I haven't done anything as bad as

  162. him

  163. you can still be locked you can number

  164. one compare you can number two uh and

  165. that's Pride by the

  166. way and then number two you can you can

  167. have just keep stuck in your guilt and

  168. go this this reminds me of all the

  169. horrible things I've done and this

  170. doesn't help me at all I don't have the

  171. Breakthrough I can't sing the songs that

  172. David sings uh and number three it

  173. exposes really your idolatry or whatever

  174. you worship and the LIE of self and who

  175. who forms who you are in the value what

  176. you are this this scripture brings us

  177. it's a song that brings us into what the

  178. act and practice of forgiveness is meant

  179. to look like and many of us wrestle with

  180. forgiving other

  181. people but I

  182. would I would ask you just before you

  183. put aside this passage you you

  184. understand that this isn't meant for you

  185. to compare to David and how bad he did

  186. and how not as bad you're doing what

  187. this is an invitation to do and to be

  188. and to receive is that despite David

  189. doing far worse than any single other

  190. person in this room he is experiencing a

  191. greater measure of forgiveness Joy

  192. Authority Mission and peace than you and

  193. I are experiencing today and why should

  194. a man living thousands of years ago

  195. before the New Covenant of

  196. Jesus be living in an in a completely

  197. Superior more wonderful experience of

  198. relationship with

  199. God that's how he should confront you

  200. how can a man that's done so far worse

  201. experience so much

  202. more Psalm

  203. 51 this is when Nathan the

  204. prophet went to David to confront him

  205. after he had gone into Beth Sheba Psalm

  206. 51 have mercy on me oh God according to

  207. your steadfast love according to your

  208. abundant Mercy blot out my

  209. transgressions Wash Me thoroughly from

  210. my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin

  211. for I know my transgressions and my sin

  212. is ever before me against you only you

  213. have I sinned and done what is evil in

  214. your sight so that you may be justified

  215. in your words and blameless in your

  216. judgment behold I was brought forth in

  217. iniquity and in sin did my mother

  218. conceive me there's a lot of things this

  219. is a PO a poetic song We'll go through

  220. what these things mean in a moment

  221. behold you delight and Truth in the

  222. inward being and you teach me wisdom in

  223. the secret heart Purge me with hsip and

  224. I shall shall be clean wash me and I

  225. shall be whiter than snow this is

  226. referencing back to what the priests

  227. would do in a ritual cleansing let me

  228. hear joy and gladness let the bones that

  229. you've been broken that have broken

  230. Rejoice hide your face from my sins and

  231. blot out my iniquities create in me a

  232. clean heart oh God and renew a right

  233. Spirit within

  234. me he has a need and awareness that he

  235. needs not just to have his heart refined

  236. but he needs one

  237. created cast me not away from your

  238. presence he realizes he's far from God

  239. that's why he

  240. sinned take not your Holy Spirit from

  241. me and yet he believes the Lord will

  242. restore to me the joy of your salvation

  243. and uphold me with a willing Spirit then

  244. I will teach transgressors your ways he

  245. still has hope to have a purpose in

  246. life and sinners will return to you he's

  247. already not taking on the identity of a

  248. sinner but as one who's a mouthpiece of

  249. God realizing that in God's forgiveness

  250. he always restores you to a position of

  251. purpose and Mission because you do not

  252. qualify yourself he does deliver me from

  253. blood guiltiness oh God oh God of my

  254. salvation and my tongue will sing aloud

  255. of your righteousness open my lips and

  256. my mouth will declare your praise for

  257. you will not Delight in sacrifice or I

  258. would give it you will not be pleased

  259. with the burn off offering the

  260. sacrifices of God are a broken Spirit a

  261. broken and contrite heart oh God you

  262. will not despise let's stop there

  263. so last week we focused on what's

  264. holding us

  265. back this year we want to go after a

  266. realm of discipleship we're calling it

  267. disruptive discipleship in a secular age

  268. returning to the Lord pursuing Jesus

  269. Through practicing discipleship I I

  270. joked how

  271. the Tik toks and YouTube shorts that

  272. that joke about how you go to a

  273. therapist and you just say like uh you

  274. know the therapist ask you well are you

  275. getting enough sleep no are you praying

  276. no they don't say praying they say are

  277. you eating well no are you exercising no

  278. are you calling a friend no are you

  279. doing anything that you should be doing

  280. every single day to have some sort of

  281. normative uplifting experience no and

  282. and what I like to remind us is that we

  283. can do the same thing in the church

  284. right well you're depressed you're

  285. you're lost you're you're struggling for

  286. your purpose you're just feeling

  287. defeated well have have you spent time

  288. with the Lord no have you prayed at all

  289. no have you spent time in scripture no

  290. have you been in community no have you

  291. Sabbath no have you gone to community

  292. group no have you have you have you

  293. tithed have you have you been generous

  294. with your life and your time have have

  295. have you limited all the things coming

  296. at you from the world and fixated on God

  297. at

  298. all this isn't a judgment this is what I

  299. ask myself and realize like man I've

  300. done those things this month

  301. have I done them today any of

  302. them those things are not so that we can

  303. keep a checklist it's so that you can

  304. keep your sanity and that you can be

  305. full in a life in a world that's pulling

  306. you against all these

  307. things we're practicing the way of Jesus

  308. because it's good for you because that's

  309. the key to flourishing not so that you

  310. can get into heaven when you die there's

  311. not a single verse in all of scripture

  312. about here's how you get into heaven

  313. when you die not one not

  314. one it's

  315. about are you weary are you heavy and

  316. Jesus says have you tried the ways of

  317. the world my yoke is easy my burden is

  318. light and then he UPS the bar up here

  319. the problem isn't that you're you just

  320. have to do these things the problem is

  321. that you can't do these things the

  322. problem is that your heart and then he

  323. speaks to the Pharisees you think that

  324. by trying to check the list off and

  325. you're doing so well that you've gotten

  326. closer to God you've gotten closer to

  327. Holiness that you're more qualified than

  328. your brother your neighbor whatever else

  329. and he's saying you've missed the whole

  330. point the whole point is that you can't

  331. do this your heart should be exposed for

  332. its imperfection and the fact that it

  333. has to have a new heart the entire

  334. message of Jesus and David saw this

  335. thousands of years before looking ahead

  336. for what God was like in his promise of

  337. how he's going to atone for the world's

  338. issues so last week was what's holding

  339. us back our comparison our guilt and our

  340. identity this week how do we practice

  341. forgiveness how do we practice

  342. forgiveness we're going to look at the

  343. recognition owning our stuff the

  344. restoration which is that God is

  345. actually going to change us and then The

  346. Full Experience restoration well first

  347. recognition restoration and The Full

  348. Experience um first I just want to also

  349. just point out

  350. maybe maybe a lighter tone for a moment

  351. um as you all know as I mention often

  352. I've got more kids than we meant to have

  353. and love them all equally and like them

  354. differently every moment of every day

  355. they they also repent differently so um

  356. that's just going to be your examples if

  357. you don't like examples of my kids you

  358. probably need to find another church I'm

  359. sorry you don't have to have kids or

  360. like kids I said uh I think a couple

  361. weeks ago like it's we didn't have a lot

  362. of kids cuz I liked kids it's cuz I like

  363. my wife and the reality is that you

  364. don't have to like kids either to be her

  365. you do have to tolerate them but they

  366. repent differently our four-year-old for

  367. instance um she can be stubborn and um

  368. and and fiery and defiant but generally

  369. her repentance is full like when she

  370. repents when you see that wall break

  371. it's done and she wants to restore and

  372. it's behind her fully completely she

  373. doesn't hang on to it you know we have

  374. to learn how to hold grudges in life

  375. we do it's it's an acquired taste

  376. grudges bourbon acquired

  377. tastes then my my teenager one of them

  378. or all of them um two of them I have two

  379. of them now um had an experience this

  380. week where we just

  381. like and this is the most all my kids

  382. are amazing but this is the most amazing

  383. kid loves the Lord and I see just

  384. unbelievable things that make me want to

  385. make me want want to get

  386. tyy but speaking of tyy he can look me

  387. in the face tyy and deny something that

  388. I know he

  389. did I was going to lose my salvation and

  390. his in one Fell Swoop this

  391. week how could such a good kid look at

  392. me defiantly when I am telling him I

  393. know what you did this is what you did

  394. and you are going to tell me that you

  395. did

  396. it

  397. defiant I had to go to the Lord and ask

  398. the Lord how are you going to use this

  399. weakness of his and turn it into a

  400. strength Jesus I have no faith in your

  401. restorative transformative power of your

  402. gospel compromise I we make jokes about

  403. it because if I got too heavy I'd be

  404. like this would be too depressing of a

  405. message but I I had to laugh about it

  406. too I'm like I'm I'm really wrestling

  407. with this I'm not sure I believe in your

  408. entire gospel with the wickedness out of

  409. that thing that is my

  410. Offspring and I can't blame anyone I

  411. wanted to blame my wife so

  412. bad and I couldn't do it

  413. uh what about other relationships how do

  414. we how do we as adults sometimes still

  415. struggle with forgiveness of others well

  416. you know if it's a bestie right we're

  417. too nice usually to kind of blatant

  418. you know lie to someone's face or just

  419. some I we can be fake but usually it's

  420. just kind of like Curt texts and

  421. unavailability till I'm until I'm ready

  422. to come back into your obnoxious

  423. presence and restore

  424. right and don't I mean I won't even

  425. mention marriage how we can exist in the

  426. same space and not communicate for weeks

  427. on end thankfully we have gotten much

  428. better at that right uh but I was like

  429. you know what I think we are not are we

  430. not talking to each other I you know

  431. it's you talk but you're not talking and

  432. and then you go like oh yeah you've been

  433. mad at me for two and a half weeks and I

  434. think we need to work on some

  435. forgiveness uh just think about the

  436. Dynamics and the and and this is

  437. examples of God loving children and

  438. god-loving

  439. adults

  440. forgiveness well in the midst of that I

  441. just want us to think about a couple

  442. secular lies the first secular liee

  443. because again we're going to be going

  444. after this year the lies that are out

  445. there and then just what do we fixate on

  446. here in this community and in my life

  447. how do I actually practice the things of

  448. Jesus discipleship but discipleship has

  449. to be aware of what's around it cannot

  450. just be a bubble so what are the secular

  451. lies and what is the way of Jesus say

  452. that's disruptive discipleship the

  453. secular line number one we're looking at

  454. today is that people never change

  455. do you realize that you should be so

  456. offended whenever you hear anything now

  457. I know that we talk about like don't use

  458. the word Trigg I hate it when people say

  459. I'm so triggered I don't like that um

  460. you can do that some of you are

  461. triggered now that I said that but the

  462. the it's just it's a it's a phrase so we

  463. never used to say stuff like that and

  464. now anything can trigger anybody and

  465. then I and and then anyway as soon as I

  466. start talking like that then I start

  467. talking like somebody on the news and

  468. then you rem I remind you of someone and

  469. I don't mean to do that here's here's

  470. what we

  471. have to though understand about this lie

  472. because we hear it all the time people

  473. never change well the entire Christian

  474. faith is built upon the concept that

  475. people do

  476. change in fact if you were going to give

  477. the gospel contextualized it'd be people

  478. actually

  479. change

  480. or you know we we talk about the spirit

  481. that raised Christ from the dead which

  482. is so profound this is the profoundness

  483. of the the spirit raised Christ from the

  484. dead human beings that are unable to

  485. change can change that's the

  486. gospel where you're completely unable to

  487. change the gospel says you can

  488. change but it also is a lie of that you

  489. have the second lie is that you can

  490. actually do it and so the second secular

  491. lie is is that we have to go out and

  492. Achieve so we have to look out we have

  493. to go look inside ourselves and then go

  494. live it

  495. out and I've talked about this before

  496. I'm going to quote something from Elsa

  497. and um I mentioned I think real briefly

  498. last week I've used it in a couple

  499. sermons but I think it's a sometimes

  500. it's like when a pastor uses an analogy

  501. twice or three times you're like he's

  502. lazy other times it's that okay we're

  503. trying to use an ongoing theme

  504. strategic so if you feel like I'm being

  505. lazy just look at it more like strategic

  506. and maybe you'll feel better I do um

  507. anyway this is this is my Elsa example

  508. so

  509. Elsa um there's a little song that goes

  510. like this um she

  511. goes well I'm I'm I'm gonna kind of I'm

  512. gonna kind of

  513. Marcus I just don't have her

  514. range what's the what's her name that

  515. does Elsa

  516. um I heard like three different names

  517. you're all be quiet don't let them in

  518. don't let them see you must be the good

  519. girl you were always meant to be conceal

  520. don't feel don't let them know what is

  521. Elsa talking about the whole idea is

  522. that Elsa is confronting the modern self

  523. and the traditional self what's the

  524. traditional self the traditional self is

  525. that like your family is rigid and mean

  526. and they just want you to be a popper

  527. and sweep floors and be miserable and

  528. everything's dark and gray and there's

  529. disease cuz it's probably the middle

  530. ages and there's like just cess pools

  531. everywhere

  532. right and then you you see this bright

  533. this brightness inside this this free

  534. little modern self that wants to be able

  535. to have a vision in an American Dream

  536. and and and find look inside for who you

  537. really are and break free from all these

  538. people that tell you that you

  539. can't now the problem is it's it's like

  540. partial

  541. reality there are people that are always

  542. going to tell you that want to stifle

  543. you and hold you back

  544. back the the issue though is that it's

  545. saying that you have to decide who you

  546. are you have to look within find any

  547. value that you have

  548. yourself

  549. that's

  550. heavy so you're telling every kid just

  551. like yeah no one's going to tell you you

  552. you're not worth anything apart from

  553. what you can find by yourself what do

  554. you tell the people I haven't found

  555. anything inside me

  556. so the the traditional self though is is

  557. still

  558. wrong that you're

  559. completely oppressed by your world

  560. around you whether that's family

  561. community there's limited options and

  562. you can't

  563. dream but the modern self is so obsessed

  564. with dreaming that what we miss is is

  565. that you have to have a dream you have

  566. to discover it deep within yourself find

  567. your value and then you actually have to

  568. go out and live it and achieve it and

  569. will it and resist everything that holds

  570. you

  571. back and here's here's the

  572. issue the gospel comes

  573. in and it's a third option except that

  574. the gospel is still in a time period but

  575. is still operating out of an outside in

  576. reality we live in an inside out so for

  577. us to understand that maybe there's a

  578. God that gives you purpose and identity

  579. and worth and value you have to undo

  580. this look inside thing and you have to

  581. say is it possible that I can trust

  582. something else someone else telling me

  583. that I've got value and that I can live

  584. into

  585. that and so we're still trying to kind

  586. of receive the Gospel and then we go out

  587. and try to live it in our own

  588. self and so Elsa is wrestling this voice

  589. attacking her hide what's inside getting

  590. sync with what's outside expected of you

  591. again family community whatever the

  592. expectations are and then she later goes

  593. on it's time to see what I can do test

  594. the limits and break through no right no

  595. wrong no rules for me I'm free that's

  596. the modern

  597. self now as I always say I've heard

  598. multiple pastors um use this analogy so

  599. I'm giving them credit all of them

  600. whoever stole it first congratulations

  601. and then she goes into Let it go Let it

  602. go I can't hold it in

  603. anymore what can't she hold

  604. in no right no wrong no rules for me I'm

  605. free now we see it in a sweet little

  606. thing because she's going after good

  607. things and she's got you know evil

  608. oppressive family and Community around

  609. her well what we miss is is that we try

  610. to form our own identities take a little

  611. bit of God when it's helpful and then we

  612. want to live into this modern

  613. self and we're wrestling and wrestling

  614. and wrestling

  615. and what David is going to show us is a

  616. much more efficient way not an easy way

  617. but a much more efficient way to live in

  618. a realm of

  619. forgiveness and a new identity that God

  620. calls a clean

  621. heart okay so this is what it looks

  622. like the recognition verse 1 to six I'm

  623. G to have to go sups fast own the

  624. failure this is the key in verses 1 to

  625. six have mercy on me cleanse me he's

  626. using all this cleansing language he's

  627. ultimately getting at what God is like

  628. God is the one who cleanses and cleans

  629. this is among the most significant

  630. features in the entire Psalm because

  631. David's appeal is not to God's law not

  632. to the rules not to a moral law not to

  633. anything he believes he can do to make

  634. it up what he's done not to his status

  635. as a king not to any circumstances that

  636. led him to fall not to he what he does

  637. though though is he he appeals to

  638. something to one

  639. thing you and you

  640. alone that's a big phrase it just sounds

  641. like nice scriptural song stuff but what

  642. he's saying is is God you alone your

  643. nature your character this is what I'm

  644. turning to I'm going Beyond myself this

  645. prayer isn't just showing us his remorse

  646. and being sorry for something and being

  647. guilty

  648. and it's saying this it's

  649. saying I am not going to use the

  650. standard of what I'm what I'm going to

  651. move into with forgiveness because I all

  652. of a sudden agree with you what he's

  653. saying is is I have already seen that I

  654. could justify my own

  655. actions against you you only have I

  656. sinned what he's saying is is I believed

  657. that what I was doing was right when I

  658. did it I did what I wanted to do I was

  659. trying to live free I was trying to be

  660. my desires the most sobering thing in

  661. the whole encounter with David B Sheba

  662. Uriah her husband I mentioned last week

  663. bath Sheba was not an

  664. accident UAH was one of his key Mighty

  665. Men his his father was actually the

  666. Mighty Men of David that went out to war

  667. when he was being chased by Saul and

  668. before he was King her grandfather is

  669. his most uh trusted

  670. adviser that lives in the palace he

  671. can't pull any of this off without all

  672. of them eventually knowing he's screwing

  673. over the the most committed loyal family

  674. in his entire

  675. Kingdom because he wanted it because his

  676. desires you you and then what we see

  677. then

  678. is Uriah who's given the option to go

  679. home and sleep with his wife while his

  680. men are on the battlefield so that

  681. David can get bath Sheba pregnant

  682. through Uriah or so that he would think

  683. and cover his sin meanwhile everyone

  684. else would have already known he was

  685. never going to cover it in the midst of

  686. this Uriah refuses David makes fun of

  687. him acting like what's wrong with you

  688. not going home to be with your wife like

  689. there's something wrong with him which

  690. shows the coldness ugliness of David's

  691. heart in the midst of that you see that

  692. Uriah demonstrates manhood that isn't

  693. dictated on

  694. desire you're more than your

  695. desires the gospel pulls us toward

  696. towards a place that

  697. says you do not have to be identified

  698. and to build yourself up

  699. like every other

  700. pull of humanity wants to pull you

  701. towards there's a greater

  702. deeper even more real pull if you'll

  703. allow the Lord to give you a new

  704. heart and David had to face the ugly and

  705. it starts with a man that showed how to

  706. deal with desire because David could

  707. not in the midst of

  708. that he prays this

  709. prayer evil in your sight he references

  710. because David is basically saying I did

  711. what was right in my sight and what we

  712. don't come to terms with is most of the

  713. time we're trying to figure out like

  714. what's right and wrong in our sight and

  715. if that agrees with God and this and

  716. that and the other what David is showing

  717. us is when you allow your heart to go to

  718. its Nth Degree it will always fail you

  719. because your heart always desires things

  720. it will ultimately kill you hurt you or

  721. hurt somebody

  722. else we have a rough time we just we

  723. just think that there's something

  724. completely unique about the people that

  725. do the dark dark stuff and what God is

  726. saying is is that the man who has my

  727. heart the most beautiful worship writer

  728. in all of history had the darkest

  729. darkest heart he's capable of that and

  730. so are you and so am I and that is the

  731. most sobering reality on the planet is

  732. that you and I are capable of the

  733. darkest things you can

  734. imagine I just need us to sit with that

  735. you are capable I am capable of the

  736. darkest things you can

  737. imagine and if that is even a shred of

  738. where your heart is at God is saying and

  739. what David is

  740. saying if you will look at God

  741. if you will allow his ultimate authority

  742. to Reign if you will say against you

  743. only you have I sinned what he's saying

  744. is is there's one ultimate Authority not

  745. mine not self but you God I tried this

  746. my way it doesn't work I have to try it

  747. your way and he while he's saying that

  748. he's taking all the law and all the

  749. prophets and all the rules and he's

  750. putting them under not that I check

  751. anything off but they were all to point

  752. me to you and what you're like and your

  753. character and I want to know you you and

  754. in the midst of this I'm seeing you for

  755. who you really are if you've lost sight

  756. of who God really is or maybe you've

  757. never even tasted him or experienced him

  758. David's song is an invitation for you to

  759. know God not for you to check off a list

  760. of rules of Rights and Wrongs your guilt

  761. will never be fully dealt with if you

  762. just start living

  763. better so what David does there's a

  764. process he owns the failure but it's he

  765. recognizes who he's failed not himself

  766. not other people while he did that he

  767. failed God because what he did was he

  768. said I can decide what's right and wrong

  769. and I will and if I do if I'm the

  770. ultimate Authority I'm done I just

  771. invite you where is it in your life that

  772. you really don't see God as ultimate

  773. Authority where you're really just

  774. picking and choosing the things of God

  775. that are convenient and it's it's why

  776. when we talk about the scripture why we

  777. wrestle with it and we wrestle with it

  778. especially the parts we don't

  779. like and if something offends you like a

  780. good God wouldn't be like that then

  781. wrestle with it until you see his

  782. goodness because you are either being

  783. lied to by whatever is interpreting the

  784. scripture to

  785. you or you're lying to it yourself or

  786. you think that you know better than God

  787. and we would never say that what we

  788. would say is there just must be a better

  789. version whoever wrote this doesn't know

  790. God like I know God

  791. and it's always

  792. convenient to be the only person on

  793. Earth who can ever dictate what God

  794. should be like and the ultimate question

  795. is is it possible that if there is a

  796. God that he has a different view than I

  797. do and I don't like to sit with that so

  798. I think I'm right and that's what David

  799. ultimately realized he had Justified his

  800. own own

  801. Darkness until he can see the fullness

  802. that it's God who

  803. forgives that he brings a renewal of joy

  804. and he gives a heart of wisdom so verse

  805. verse 7 to 12 Begins the

  806. restoration David doesn't just sit in

  807. the guilt and

  808. failure he allows God to begin to change

  809. him create in me a clean heart oh God he

  810. talks about his forgiveness he talks

  811. about his Joy he talks about a heart of

  812. wisdom to cure what led him

  813. there to wipe and wash and and all this

  814. stuff hiss up these are all ritual

  815. cleaning words that ultimately lead to

  816. us to the fact that he's saying clean me

  817. restore me change

  818. me all of

  819. me and most of us if we're still stuck

  820. in comparison and pride we only want God

  821. to take care of this one little area

  822. we're having trouble

  823. with if you want the fullness the

  824. fullness of the experience of

  825. forgiveness you have to surrender

  826. everything you have to assume you don't

  827. see everything you have to know what

  828. you're capable

  829. of the darkness that you're capable of

  830. if you want to carry his light David

  831. carried the light because he stared the

  832. darkness of his soul in the face and he

  833. knew that he deserved nothing

  834. so what's he saying what's he singing

  835. he's saying that only God can bring into

  836. existence that which previously did not

  837. exist and that's where his heart is

  838. being restored he wants a renewed heart

  839. a steadfast

  840. spirit and finally the experience the

  841. experience has to move from the self to

  842. others it has has to start showing

  843. concern for more than yourself it has to

  844. start seeing yourself as a missional

  845. instrument to restore other people and

  846. it has to have a posture of gratefulness

  847. not condemnation not comparison not

  848. Pride not anything other than I don't

  849. deserve anything and therefore I can see

  850. everything he's done and given me with

  851. gratitude if you don't have

  852. gratitude which daily do I wrestle with

  853. gratitude I can be grateful about the

  854. things I want to be grateful about I'm

  855. almost done some of you need to stay

  856. engaged for just a minute what are you

  857. able to be grateful for I don't mean

  858. like stupid Thanksgiving

  859. stuff I didn't mean to say that like

  860. that I love

  861. Thanksgiving I mean like the the the

  862. cheap stuff that we're always thankful

  863. for like your

  864. family like the person that didn't

  865. overcook the turkey the the things that

  866. are really valuable that don't put that

  867. aside for a second I'm talking about

  868. where is

  869. gratitude for the stuff that's

  870. impossible gratitude isn't

  871. saying you know my parents wounded me

  872. left me scarred me boom that accident

  873. that I experienced or that someone in my

  874. family experienced that sickness that

  875. never got the Breakthrough in the

  876. healing those wounds those scars how do

  877. you have gratitude for that David is

  878. should be completely scarred broken

  879. miserable for the rest of his life he

  880. should be guilty the rest of his life

  881. for what he's done what he's

  882. experienced and he's not

  883. why he's not grateful for what he's done

  884. he's not grateful for the

  885. suffering he's able to see in the midst

  886. of the suffering God is the only answer

  887. to Suffering The Suffering that he

  888. causes and the suffering he doesn't

  889. cause meaning David's suffering God

  890. doesn't cause the suffering he uses it

  891. and when you see that you can understand

  892. that God might be good without me having

  893. a reason for the suffering and giving

  894. some sort of stupid answer that doesn't

  895. answer the reason why the pain is there

  896. so where you're unable to to see

  897. gratitude for God it is the area that he

  898. doesn't have your heart I don't mean

  899. that in like a you have to pretend

  900. everything's okay with when that person

  901. is gone or when that wound is real what

  902. I mean

  903. is is that David experienced something

  904. so

  905. profound he was able to have gratitude

  906. in the midst of the most bottom dwelling

  907. place a human being could and should

  908. be and he could see God for who he was

  909. and he could see ahead to the hope of

  910. his future he could see ahead Beyond his

  911. own life and the misery that he

  912. caused and that gives hope to you and I

  913. that gives hope for the pain of your

  914. suffering that there's actually a God

  915. that sees it and wants to work his

  916. forgiveness so that you can actually

  917. experience it not just talk about it not

  918. just pray for it not just hear it not

  919. just become like a over and over again

  920. you hear the forgiveness I know I need

  921. to forgive but I can't even forgive God

  922. for what he allowed to happen to me and

  923. if that's you I just want you to see the

  924. eyes of God staring at you saying I I

  925. see you and I get you and I want you to

  926. know who I am in the midst of your pain

  927. and David sees that when he understands

  928. that all of a sudden it doesn't ruin his

  929. purpose and he hasn't screwed over his

  930. entire purpose in life it means that his

  931. his pain and the suffering that he

  932. caused has given him a renewed heart and

  933. renewed purpose and A Renewed voice to

  934. show people what God is

  935. like and if you'd like that renewed

  936. heart and that renewed voice and that

  937. renewed Mission today I just want to

  938. invite you to stand with me and let me

  939. pray over you as I pray over myself

  940. team can start to come

  941. up that's what you call a crash landing

  942. where I'm going to figure it all out in

  943. the

  944. prayer but stay in that moment stay in

  945. that moment of being aware of where your

  946. heart is at maybe you need to still be

  947. sitting in the place of what's holding

  948. your heart

  949. back maybe it's the guilt maybe it's the

  950. comparison maybe it's just a struggle

  951. with identity

  952. and holy spirit we're asking

  953. you to help us step into

  954. recognizing our imperfect failed

  955. hearts and with whatever little faith we

  956. have we trust you and invite you to be

  957. the one who

  958. changes where some of us in the room

  959. have been trying to be the Agents of

  960. change we haven't allowed God to be the

  961. one who changes

  962. if you want to live a changed life if

  963. you've been trying to change areas of

  964. your life In Your Own

  965. Strength David reminds you that you

  966. can't and you

  967. won't the key to a changed

  968. life is a fresh encounter with what God

  969. is really

  970. like owning it and then sing there is no

  971. way to deal with this other than you

  972. come in trans form heal renew so imagine

  973. the broken lives that David was

  974. surrounded by the Broken families he's

  975. then married to B Sheba and all her

  976. family who he's wounded more deeply than

  977. anyone you can

  978. imagine that's the rest of his life how

  979. can he possibly live with any confidence

  980. in hope because it's not in

  981. himself are you with me are you with me

  982. I still live

  983. some measure of a good day and a

  984. confidence in God because I'm doing a

  985. good

  986. [Music]

  987. job we recognize father

  988. that we can do a lot of good in our own

  989. strength it will always fall short and

  990. we will never experience the fullness of

  991. this kind of song

  992. promises without you changing us wholly

  993. and completely

  994. [Music]

  995. some of you in the

  996. room it's holding on to some of the

  997. legitimate bitterness of those that have

  998. wronged you completely

  999. unjustly I can't possibly tell you or

  1000. condemn you from my

  1001. position to let that

  1002. go I just invite

1003. you pray a simple prayer and ask the

1004. Lord what do I do with this bitterness

1005. and this pain and this

1006. suffering where are you in it what do

  1007. you say about

1008. it how do I let you change me in the

  1009. midst of it

  1010. [Music]

1011. some of you are just some of you maybe

1012. don't have that woundedness and you just

1013. have been distant from the Lord and you

  1014. don't know

  1015. why Come

  1016. Back Lean

1017. in let him up to

1018. standard let him call you

  1019. higher wake

  1020. up arise

  1021. [Music]

1022. some of you just feel so guilty that you

1023. can't possibly understand that God would

  1024. do

1025. something from where you've come

1026. from he wants to confront that he wants

  1027. to confront that

1028. lie and this is a moment for you will

1029. let the seeds of Hope be deposited into

1030. your soul and into your your heart will

  1031. you let

  1032. him begin the

1033. change create in us a clean heart a new

  1034. heart a full

1035. heart give us eyes to

  1036. see new identities new

1037. standards a new standard of self built

  1038. on

1039. Jesus not on Elsa not on anything

1040. else we continue to live in the midst of

1041. a culture telling all kinds of
