  1. here on earth as it is in heaven in

  2. Jesus name amen amen hey Christian's

  3. been working super hard can we just

  4. honor Christian he's like this message

  5. is going to be really good i'm excited

  6. you're too kind um Suzanne come come up

  7. here and uh I put her I am putting her I

  8. have put her on the spot because I've

  9. already told her I am putting her on the

  10. spot because here she is we um had a

  11. great message by Phil Chan last week on

  12. fasting and uh we like you said we have

  13. some resources up there but I have um

  14. there's a slide several if you're doing

  15. the slides there's another slide I have

  16. up there that just gives you the front

  17. page you can keep going until you find

  18. this one that has like the front page of

  19. the of the fasting page and I just I

  20. want to bring you to that but before you

  21. do that I just want Suzanne to share a

  22. little bit about our group our community

  23. group which she has the the honor right

  24. it's an honor of leading uh with with

  25. Daniel and Fallon they they just did a

  26. great job getting into the discussion of

  27. fasting i asked her to give you a taste

  28. of what it was like both for our

  29. community to process fasting as well as

  30. if you don't know Suzanne like when she

  31. goes after something the temptation is

  32. to compare yourself to her don't compare

  33. yourself to her just be inspired by some

  34. of the things that she's putting into

  35. practice i love how you put to practice

  36. your relationship with Jesus that's all

  37. so give us a taste both you personally

  38. and our community what it was like i

  39. love our core group we have awesome

  40. people i asked Daniel and Fallon to

  41. share about their experience with

  42. fasting because I'm not that great at

  43. fasting um and then I gave it up for a

  44. while thinking I don't want to be too

  45. legalistic or too prideful so um Daniel

  46. and Fallon are like fasting warriors

  47. they have fasted for 40 days they've

  48. fasted for 30 days they fasted for weeks

  49. they and they had all these incredible

  50. testimonies so in our group we had

  51. people that have never fasted and had

  52. just tried it the first time after

  53. Phil's sermon we have people that have

  54. told God that they're never going to

  55. fast and they changed their mind after

  56. they heard Daniel and Fallon uh we have

  57. people that have fasted social media

  58. that have fasted um coffee that have

  59. fasted different like addictive things

  60. so we had kind of a mix between a super

  61. encouraging inspirational testimonial

  62. and educational like how does this

  63. actually work like how long do you go do

  64. you drink water not drink water what

  65. kind of can you put can you put creamer

  66. in your coffee can you drink coffee you

  67. like they're like "Okay don't be

  68. legalistic don't be nitty-gritty about

  69. it." Like the Lord has to anoint it he

  70. has to lead you into it and it's it's a

  71. spiritual fast a lot of people in our

  72. group had health fasted like

  73. intermittent fasting or fasted for

  74. health reasons but then just adding the

  75. feasting on scripture feasting on prayer

  76. feasting on focusing on Jesus so I

  77. wasn't planning on doing this so we had

  78. a a potluck uh bring the food that you

  79. would find it hard to fast from so um

  80. inspired by Phil I I totally had

  81. In-N-Out Burger on my mind thanks to you

  82. um so I I could be a vegetarian almost

  83. except for cheeseburgers so I went to

  84. In-N-Out and bought 10 cheeseburgers and

  85. brought it to the potluck and after so

  86. and then the idea was like okay we're

  87. gonna feast and then we're going to talk

  88. about fasting and I got really inspired

  89. because Daniel and Fallon are great at

  90. um delivering like grace and freedom and

  91. liberation and no performance no not not

  92. doing it for your ego not doing it for

  93. your flesh actually the opposite reason

  94. right to try to get rid of your ego and

  95. your flesh not to boost it up how

  96. spiritual you are um so I went home I

  97. ate an extra In-N-Out Burger and so that

  98. two In-N-Out Burgers and a huge bowl of

  99. cookies and cream ice cream like huge

  100. then I'm like "Okay starting tomorrow

  101. starting tomorrow."

  102. Okay so uh so then from from Thursday

  103. morning when I woke up I I just didn't

  104. eat till uh till Saturday and I just

  105. thought "Lord tell me when to stop like

  106. when I get hungry or when you tell me to

  107. stop or should I go 24 hours or 36

  108. hours?" And it just kept going it

  109. actually felt easy and um I've realized

  110. in doing our spiritual inventory that

  111. some of the worldly um you know I've

  112. been starting to do a lot of worldly

  113. things like I like to eat too much i

  114. like to drink too much i like to play my

  115. phone game too much i like to shop too

  116. much and I was just thinking oh my gosh

  117. I'm spending too much money i'm eating

  118. too so the Lord just gave me three

  119. things to quit for a week and so I just

  120. quit those i mean I'm only on day four

  121. so far but halfway through but it's

  122. feeling easy when I feel like it's

  123. anointed or the ideas from God it feels

  124. easy it doesn't feel like a struggle and

  125. it's sort of like you're driving your

  126. car on autopilot or cruise control or

  127. distracted driving like I have eaten

  128. breakfast in the car i have put on

  129. makeup in the car i have texted in the

  130. car i've done all the And when you're

  131. kind of like on autopilot because you

  132. drive automatically but you're you're

  133. actually kind of a dangerous driver

  134. right because you're not paying

  135. attention my friend rearended somebody

  136. on the freeway just because she wasn't

  137. paying attention my my Honda has a

  138. little display that says um a little cup

  139. of coffee thing pops up and says

  140. inattentive driving if if you hit the

  141. little bumps on the side of the road too

  142. many times it says inattentive driving

  143. like okay I better grab onto the wheel i

  144. know how to drive but I better pay

  145. attention okay so this is sort of like

  146. my life was just like hitting the bumps

  147. a little bit too much just just kind of

  148. cruising off the freeway of faith right

  149. so just gratifying my flesh too much

  150. with all the things that I just wanted

  151. uh feeding my flesh too much so just

  152. this the three things God told me to to

  153. abstain from and then just not eating

  154. for a couple days i feel like it really

  155. did get me back on focus back on the

  156. freeway like okay remember what's

  157. important um focus on Jesus i probably

  158. prayed worshiped and read scripture in

  159. the last three days more than the last

  160. three weeks or maybe the last three

  161. months i don't know but just really

  162. refocused me and it makes you feel like

  163. what is really important what am I doing

  164. what's my life about so um I just

  165. recently moved and in moving you look

  166. through all your boxes i literally just

  167. sorted my paper clips my journals my

  168. hair bows my toothpaste my papers i went

  169. through everything I owned do I need

  170. this why am I holding on to this is this

  171. Marie Condo right marie Condo the art of

  172. cleaning is this useful does it bring me

  173. joy it has to be useful or bring you joy

  174. so I think I just did a physical purging

  175. of all my stuff now I know everything I

  176. own it's useful or it brings me joy

  177. otherwise I got rid of it and I think a

  178. fast is what you do inside like that is

  179. it useful look at all these and I only

  180. limited myself to three because like I

  181. suddenly start to think so many areas of

  182. my life need reforming not these three

  183. like I could think of 12 15 things I

  184. should be fasting from but let me just

  185. start with three because you can't take

  186. on too much and you start to feel like

  187. gosh there's so many things I need to

  188. work on to like up my up my faith or up

  189. my spiritual game so and it's kind of an

  190. in inner inventory is this useful does

  191. this bring me joy and joy is different

  192. than pleasure i could seek pleasure all

  193. day long but that's not joy like

  194. sometimes after you indulge in pleasure

  195. you actually feel worse you're like "Oh

  196. man I just ate too much or I just binge

  197. like five Netflix shows." Like I

  198. actually feel worse about myself after

  199. that so pleasure is different than joy

  200. so I feel like it's kind of a Marie

  201. Condo thing for the inner world and um

  202. thank you Phil because it just I just

  203. been kind of drifting you know not only

  204. my physical habits but noticing I'm

  205. getting more irritable noticing I'm more

  206. distracted noticing I'm getting more mad

  207. at people um noticing on on the free I'm

  208. getting more impatient in line like what

  209. is taking this person so long you know

  210. just an attitude of impatience of like

  211. when things aren't going my way I'm just

  212. getting more gh just more reactive um so

  213. so worldly attitudes come with worldly

  214. habits too right and then spiritual

  215. attitudes come with spiritual habits so

  216. I feel like that was just a great reset

  217. for me and and our whole group excited

  218. to come back and say like what did God

  219. tell you to fast from and how did it go

  220. and how what did you experience in the

  221. middle of that so it's really good amen

  222. and give her a hand i I should just say

  223. "Let's stand and have the benediction."

  224. Come on

  225. Suzanne she's all nervous about nothing

  226. to say and then it's like boom boom boom

  227. she's got a three-point message in there

  228. and everything come on so yeah our

  229. website has some helpful resources

  230. here's what here's what we're doing we

  231. are going after an ancient but renewed

  232. sense of how do we do disciplehip in the

  233. modern age we're going to look at three

  234. practices in this season starting with

  235. fasting we're going to get into

  236. scripture how to study the Bible how to

  237. pray really we don't assume you know how

  238. to do this because these are things that

  239. are meant to constantly be taking your

  240. life and putting it on the altar and

  241. saying "Holy Spirit I give you this and

  242. invite you to disrupt this in my life."

  243. Uh I've I've been wrestling with other

  244. forms of fasting and how we integrate

  245. them for instance if you have if you've

  246. listened to maybe five sermons in the

  247. last year of your life I don't know any

  248. pastors that don't have to constantly

  249. talk about how we use our devices and

  250. social media and all that stuff do you

  251. know I've actually been thinking about

  252. this you know you can't fast social

  253. media in the same way as you can fast

  254. food fasting is not fasting social

  255. media like overland we talk about things

  256. like you can fast from you know a good

  257. Catholic might go down to like two

  258. glasses of wine a day or something like

  259. that i'm just

  260. kidding u but the the we can do all

  261. kinds of different things but fasting

  262. bib biblically fasting was to abstain

  263. from food for a period of time what is

  264. the difference with fasting food and

  265. other kinds of fast you have to eat to

  266. live you have to guess what you don't

  267. ever have to do

  268. again social media internet devices wine

  269. whatever we're not anti-wine i love wine

  270. i have I have felt that uh we have

  271. whatever reason we go to France every

  272. summer i'm now I'm now

  273. like almost no alcohol and it's not

  274. because we're anti-alcohol just was like

  275. something that felt like the Holy Spirit

  276. was highlighting so this is

  277. relational it's for you and these

  278. resources are here so that something

  279. that just seems like maybe that you

  280. dread

  281. it i love to feast i dread fasting i'm

  282. realizing I'm getting excited for it

  283. because I'm realizing I have mindsets in

  284. a worldview that is keeping me from

  285. flourishing because I'm not simply

  286. living out the fullness of what Jesus

  287. has on offer everything he has is for us

  288. so yes stop your social media but you

  289. can't fast social media you fast food

  290. because you need it and what it does is

  291. when you fast food even one meal is you

  292. get reminded that I'm so fragile i am

  293. not in control you are you're my

  294. sustenance jesus was from Bethlehem

  295. bread this means bread bread basket it's

  296. the bread of life he's our substance he

  297. is what we feast on he is what we need

  298. and when you just taste what your

  299. physical body for a moment can't deal

  300. without you're reminded my dependence is

  301. really on you all of this is so fragile

  302. i'm not in control this world is bigger

  303. than me i'm part of a larger story so

  304. let's fast together um there's two

  305. there's two practices on fasting that

  306. are on this page starving the flesh and

  307. feeding the spirit and fasting is prayer

  308. i just encourage you those can be either

  309. guides for your whole community group to

  310. do together or they can be guides for

  311. your own quiet time and your devotions

  312. with the Lord throughout the weeks so I

  313. just encourage you to go to that use

  314. them in your daily practices with the

  315. Lord and then there's some other

  316. optional listening and so forth podcasts

  317. that are on there as well as some books

  318. if you're interested all right so let's

  319. pray jesus would you come this morning

  320. in this abbreviated message would you

  321. disrupt our lives and would you reorient

  322. us to an exciting worldview and

  323. perspective that puts the world around

  324. us in its proper

  325. place and gives us a confidence at the

  326. invitation of inviting the world in in

  327. Jesus name amen all right the the number

  328. one question I just want to land on if I

  329. don't get to anything else today is a is

  330. a simple question where do you seek

  331. validation what's the core area where

  332. you seek validation in your life uh I if

  333. I'm if I'm honest as a pastor

  334. um it's it's the easiest thing in the

  335. world to look at Sundays as validation

  336. for instance it's nice that some of you

  337. are here about 95% of you were not here

  338. when we started worship if you don't

  339. know 10 o'clock is when we start the

  340. team's always here love you all just

  341. letting you know when it starts

  342. um temptation every time we start

  343. worship this is the day no one comes to

  344. church i knew it God the church is gone

  345. no one I've screwed up it's all on me

  346. and and then the valid my maturity level

  347. is do I really seek anything like that

  348. is that really my valid that's going to

  349. just crush you and that's one of the

  350. things I've certainly grown in from from

  351. pastoring is you cannot look at human

  352. measurements for your

  353. validation but then we have tension well

  354. if no one comes what are we doing if

  355. you're in business and you're seeking

  356. validation based on how well your

  357. business is doing well that's great to

  358. say I don't find my validation or how

  359. well my business is doing but how how

  360. many of you know like when your business

  361. is not making money that is a problem

  362. right and so we have this tension of of

  363. success

  364. uh

  365. provision and validation is

  366. essentially it's a deeper it's not

  367. provision provision is different

  368. validation is what do you need to tell

  369. you that that you've got

  370. worth that's the place that identity

  371. finds its its happiness or its torment

  372. and where do you find validation it's

  373. it's it's can be so simple in so many

  374. things and and it and it fluctuates over

  375. the years many of you when you were

  376. younger you found validation in being

  377. the class clown or super attractive and

  378. beautiful like my wife or she's not even

  379. paying attention that's why I do this to

  380. see if she's writing

  381. you're not writing notes yet it's not a

  382. note i know what I'm that's not that's

  383. not even in my notes this uh I'm just

  384. kidding so no but just think about even

  385. how how you're where you've sought

  386. validation how it's changed so so it can

  387. start with relationships boyfriend

  388. girlfriends it can go through

  389. desperately seeking the validation of a

  390. parent it can go into like if you were

  391. smart academically maybe you were

  392. terrible academically and you found it

  393. in a in sports or another

  394. outlet maybe all of a sudden in college

  395. you discovered something that like oh

  396. I'm good at this there's nothing wrong

  397. with being good at something

  398. the problem is is that then our entire

  399. lives are then rearranged around how do

  400. I discover who I am how do I then build

  401. my life

  402. around a dream that I achieve we talk

  403. about this over and over again the

  404. biggest temptation of the American dream

  405. is that underneath that is an idea that

  406. you have to determine who you are you

  407. have to determine what you're going to

  408. live for you're going to have to

  409. determine then how you live this out and

  410. achieve this dream and to whatever

  411. measure you don't how are you going to

  412. deal with the disappointment that comes

  413. when you don't live out whatever that

  414. dream is and so underneath that is

  415. identity and a sense of

  416. worth your validation where does it come

  417. from and how has that shifted over the

  418. years you know mine's mine's shifting

  419. even now there's different aspects as a

  420. pastor as a father even as a friend

  421. where I have time that is shifting and

  422. changing

  423. constantly what is it that if it was

  424. taken away from you you would lose the

  425. will to live that's really the

  426. issue every single one of us whether

  427. you've just been invited here and you're

  428. not even sure that you believe in God uh

  429. or you're just curious about

  430. Christianity it's a valid question for

  431. every one of us where do you seek your

  432. validation if you've been in the church

  433. pew I know we don't do pews but if

  434. you've been sitting here for your entire

  435. life you still wrestle with the realm of

  436. where do you seek your validation what

  437. is it in your life if it was taken away

  438. from you your will to live would be gone

  439. because what's on offer from the way of

  440. Jesus is something that can be stable

  441. and secure and that can be with you

  442. through any storm any issue any hardship

  443. any

  444. suffering romans 8 I just felt so

  445. strongly i got called out at a

  446. conference not myself personally but the

  447. pastor was yelling at everyone for not

  448. having their Bibles and the dude was on

  449. an iPad and

  450. um so I just yelled at I don't ever talk

  451. when they like ask when I ask you for

  452. like to say something I just really

  453. appreciate you saying something when I'm

  454. in the crowd I don't respond like like

  455. there's too many people i never say

  456. anything and uh I I yelled really loudly

  457. he goes "Where's your Bibles?" And I go

  458. "Where's yours

  459. well the reality is look at this this is

  460. so awkward right now i'm trying to put

  461. this thing up

  462. here and so um that's why this is why so

  463. many of us don't because we have these

  464. you know these things but um this is

  465. what I read out of my daily time with

  466. the Lord romans 8:31-39 if you're not

    Romans 8:31–39

  467. familiar with Romans 8 the book of

  468. Romans written by Paul to the church in

  469. Rome

  470. uh this is a theological masterpiece

  471. this section Romans 8 might be the

  472. greatest chapter in all the Bible we're

  473. going to read eight verses out of it or

  474. so what then shall I say to these things

  475. if God is for us who can be against

  476. us he's answering the question what is

  477. God like if God's actually for you what

  478. else

  479. matters this is a man in and out of

  480. prison his entire ministry life and then

  481. he goes "He who did not spare his own

  482. son but gave him up for us all how will

  483. he not also with him graciously give us

  484. all things?" How do you know God is for

  485. you and that nothing else matters and he

  486. goes "Because he showed

  487. you he showed you through his

  488. son." And then verse 33 "Who shall bring

  489. any charge against God's elect?"

  490. Meaning how can anyone accuse you of

  491. anything he's not saying you're in the

  492. clear you haven't done anything wrong

  493. there's nothing to that you're you're

  494. you're so

  495. worthy you guys remember I I told you

  496. about my my um I maybe my favorite

  497. Pelaton instructor but this instructor

  498. ended every single session like "You are

  499. worthy you are this and you are that and

  500. blah blah blah blah blah don't baby

  501. don't let this knock you out." Something

  502. like that start your day whatever and I

  503. go someone someone telling you you're

  504. worthy for no reason doesn't have any

  505. authority it feels good because we all

  506. want to be worth something the problem

  507. is is that what do we what do we set up

  508. our worth

  509. on because we're all broken and and try

  510. setting it up because your life is just

  511. a little bit more put together or you've

  512. been more successful than the next

  513. person that's also incredibly fragile

  514. that can all be taken away from you in

  515. an instant so what is it that what is it

  516. you're building your life on what is it

  517. that your worth is built on and he's

  518. saying who can bring any charge against

  519. God's elect who can say anything about

  520. your worth and he goes it is God who

  521. justifies who is it to condemn so to

  522. when we hear the word condemnation it's

  523. more like are you guilty or not and he's

  524. basically saying you're all guilty but

  525. no one can bring any guilt against you

  526. if you're dealing with shame guilt this

  527. is a modern problem as much as an

  528. ancient one what is my worth what

  529. validates me how do I deal with shame

  530. and

  531. guilt which is brought on by the word

  532. we're not allowed to say anymore

  533. sin and when you when you just

  534. understand sin for how Jesus talked

  535. about it it's not a bad word it's just

  536. the word we're all trying to find new

  537. words for shame guilt

  538. identity worth these are all things that

  539. we're just trying to understand what do

  540. we do with the reality of

  541. sin brokenness a broken world and a

  542. broken soul what do we do with it who is

  543. to condemn jesus Christ is the one who

  544. died paul says more than that who was

  545. raised who is at the right hand of God

  546. who indeed is interceding for us who

  547. shall who then well let's just stop

  548. there verse 34 he's basically building

  549. his entire argument on your worth your

  550. identity and why you aren't guilty on

  551. the cross and the resurrection

  552. and because of that who shall separate

  553. us from the love of Christ this Bible's

  554. getting really heavy that's the other

  555. reason why I think no one holds these

  556. things it's

  557. heavy who shall separate us from the

  558. love of God do you know what secularism

  559. the modern worldview of

  560. today its fruit has been the loneliness

  561. generation in human history as far as

  562. research can

  563. tell and what is Paul saying the core

  564. need of

  565. us is to know that nothing can separate

  566. you from Christ's love for

  567. you shall tribulation distress

  568. persecution famine nakedness danger or

  569. sword he started with four questions and

  570. then he gives four hardships of

  571. suffering seven seven hardships four

  572. questions and then as it is written

  573. thank you so much is that from my Bible

  574. don't put the laptop there that that has

  575. to go up there no I know that's all

  576. right no no that'll never work yeah I

  577. know what I'm doing Suzanne i've done

  578. this before

  579. yeah I don't know what I'm doing with

  580. this you're right but I do know that and

  581. I'll figure out eventually uh if my

  582. wrist doesn't break thank you that is

  583. actually helpful i'll put it down in a

  584. second uh what am I going to do what

  585. shall separate me from Christ's

  586. love any suffering and he goes as it's

  587. written and he quotes a psalm for your

  588. sake we're being killed all day long we

  589. are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered

  590. he's he's basically promising you again

  591. suffering's coming the world is trying

  592. to get rid of suffering and ease

  593. suffering the gospel doesn't the gospel

  594. looks suffering in the face and promises

  595. that it's coming and instead of trying

  596. to tell you here's how you get out of

  597. suffering it says here is why suffering

  598. is coming and why your suffering will

  599. have purpose and why your life will have

  600. meaning and when suffering comes this is

  601. how you can face any suffering

  602. in all these matters we are more than

  603. conquerors through him who loved us for

  604. I am sure that neither death nor life

  605. nor angels nor rulers nor things present

  606. nor things to come nor powers or height

  607. or depth or anything else in all

  608. creation any

  609. suffering nothing is going to separate

  610. you from the love of God in Christ Jesus

  611. our Lord and all God's people said

  612. "Amen."

  613. Okay that that is a good word and um all

  614. I'm trying to do is to let that good

  615. word do

  616. something in our lives and then we're

  617. going to go home and we're going to try

  618. to live this out disciplehip and

  619. secularism there's there's several

  620. leading questions we're this series is

  621. called disruptive disciplehip in a

  622. secular age how are we making mature

  623. disciples as a community what is our

  624. disciplehip abiding with Jesus is what

  625. he calls it abiding in the vine is some

  626. of the language he uses what does that

  627. look like and how are we living out

  628. practicing the way of Jesus those are

  629. just the three things that we're doing

  630. in in this series and really all of our

  631. anything we do at Frontier then what

  632. does disciplehip in our moment look like

  633. i'm trying to answer that question in

  634. this series the disciplehip I'm going to

  635. define it and then give you the tension

  636. disciplehip is the intentional process

  637. of becoming like Jesus by countering the

  638. cultural forces that shape us and

  639. actively aligning our lives with his way

  640. so disciplehip is becoming like Jesus

  641. period but in this modern moment

  642. disciplehip is intentionally doing it

  643. because you got two things you have a

  644. battle going on you've got a worldview

  645. of the secular and you've got a

  646. worldview of the kingdom and they don't

  647. align and so in disciplehip you're

  648. intentionally aligning yourself to

  649. becoming like Jesus by countering the

  650. cultural forces not by separating from

  651. it like so many have done in human

  652. history but by allowing this

  653. counterculture of the kingdom to shape

  654. you and actively align your life with

  655. his way and inviting the world in

  656. letting them see your

  657. flaws and your

  658. brokenness and letting them watch him

  659. heal you

  660. it's not

  661. passive many of us need to repent from

  662. passivity myself

  663. included there's four key aspects we're

  664. going to look at over and over

  665. again jesus practice counterculture

  666. community imitating Jesus from just

  667. believing in him to actually following

  668. him practicing that means it has to be

  669. intentional from fasting and like not

  670. just this is a good idea sometime I

  671. might do it how about we just go I'm

  672. gonna allow this practice of fasting to

  673. completely disrupt my life I am going to

  674. do one thing one thing to see if this is

  675. actually going to make my

  676. life more like his can I do one

  677. thing

  678. counterculture this means living against

  679. the cultural al norms uh if you're like

  680. me I also just start to roll my eyes

  681. sometime times when when preachers or

  682. the church just keeps telling us that

  683. like you know we look all look like the

  684. world and this and that of course we

  685. look like the world we're in the world i

  686. mean it's it's like we we're not it's

  687. also not very effective for all of us to

  688. like completely not to bash on different

  689. kinds of groups and populations that

  690. that all go off and dress differently

  691. and completely live separate from the

  692. world we should have a measure of like

  693. the people of the world want to do life

  694. with us or what are we

  695. doing what was what's so what's been so

  696. fascinating about the Jewish people for

  697. all their flaws and their their uh

  698. strengths is that they've always somehow

  699. been able to

  700. integrate even though they're they're a

  701. separate and distinct people that know

  702. what they're like and and how they build

  703. their lives around and and yet at the

  704. same time they know that they're called

  705. to be substance and salt and light in a

  706. in a community there's something about

  707. that that we have to completely take

  708. into account always counterculture

  709. intentional imitating Jesus and then

  710. finally that we have to have this

  711. measure of community which means we're

  712. accountable to something bigger than

  713. ourselves i have seen a wave of

  714. Christians because they've seen the

  715. brokenness of churches use that as an

  716. excuse to just do the Christian life

  717. really on their own and isolated now

  718. even that it it has measures of their

  719. own hurt and brokenness that's usually

  720. valid the other side of that is that

  721. there's a worldview that's infiltrating

  722. and the worldview is that you can

  723. actually do this on your own there's an

  724. individualistic mindset that looks at

  725. your faith as if that's possible the

  726. Christian faith isn't your faith and

  727. it's not my faith it it is a communal

  728. faith it's not possible to fully worship

  729. without the community it's not possible

  730. to do disciplehip without a community

  731. it's not possible it's not

  732. possible because we're part of a bigger

  733. story it's not my story so I can't live

  734. the Christian life just in my story

  735. we're inviting the spirit then to

  736. disrupt our casual Christianity that

  737. conforms to culture rather than

  738. transforming it as he calls us to a

  739. higher standard of a robust

  740. countercultural faith that shapes

  741. individuals families and communities to

  742. reflect Jesus in every aspect of life

  743. and I love how John Tyson puts it

  744. disciplehip then simple simple

  745. definition is the slow steady formation

  746. of a life that looks like Jesus through

  747. the power of the Holy Spirit in the

  748. context of a loving community that's

  749. disciplehip secularism which is a I

  750. don't know I feel like that's a common

  751. word but just to define secularism

  752. uh Keller calls secularism a worldview

  753. that seeks to establish meaning morality

  754. and

  755. purpose apart from God

  756. the kingdom is a worldview that seeks to

  757. establish meaning morality and purpose

  758. because of God secularism simply takes

  759. God completely out of the equation and

  760. the main idea of secularism is it

  761. promotes the idea that individuals can

  762. define their own truth their own worth i

  763. know I you do you your truth all that we

  764. we Christians love to bash on that and

  765. get triggered every time someone says

  766. something close to that i The problem is

  767. is that we do it ourselves all the time

  768. so look at it more when you say

  769. individuals can define their own truth i

  770. actually think worth is more helpful

  771. individuals can define their own

  772. worth because that's what we're all

  773. doing we're all seeking to be like why

  774. am I worthy and then we we're forming

  775. identities and it's like well and then

  776. you've got to contend for this identity

  777. and then you've got to get agreement

  778. around your identity and you have to

  779. have validity someone has to validate it

  780. and that's what we're in a culture war

  781. of will you validate my identity and

  782. Christians are all freaking out and

  783. we're all like jerks because we're just

  784. I'm not going to validate your identity

  785. because it's wrong it's

  786. truth and then we don't bother to do the

  787. hard sacrificial work of laying our

  788. lives down and showing that and and

  789. hearing that the reality everyone is

  790. crying out for is worth they don't feel

  791. worthy they're seeking a worth and what

  792. we need to give them is why you're

  793. worthy isn't because of this can I just

  794. show you

  795. Jesus and that tide is shifting because

  796. I think the church has

  797. realized you know shoving a response

  798. down someone's throat that they're truth

  799. bomb doesn't truth right doesn't work

  800. showing

  801. someone the love of a father laying down

  802. his life for a son just continues to

  803. work

  804. i gave a an example a couple weeks ago

  805. of

  806. uh my friend Mike who who had a friend

  807. uh in grad school whose wife had

  808. suddenly passed

  809. away and he said this friend went dark

  810. for months in grief and uh he had been

  811. happily married until this you know

  812. sudden trag tragic thing happened and

  813. his wife

  814. died and of course the grief's immense

  815. as it should be and he wrestled with God

  816. and his new life for months and then all

  817. of a sudden one day out of nowhere he

  818. reaches out to Mike wants to meet up his

  819. entire demeanor has changed and of

  820. course Mike says "I'm just happy to see

  821. you but what's changed what happened?"

  822. And the friend says he says "I'll never

  823. forget what he said he looked at me i

  824. found that Jesus is real." The friend

  825. said this is a seminary friend that was

  826. you know

  827. Sometimes Christians need to get saved

  828. again don't theology check that i I

  829. found that Jesus is real have you found

  830. that Jesus is actually real do you

  831. realize that most of the stuff that you

  832. and I are wrestling with is that we

  833. forget that he's real like you cannot

  834. have a bad day when you just the core

  835. the core essence of the the the

  836. directive of your life is that he's real

  837. if you if you just never if you never

  838. got away from from the atmosphere that

  839. Jesus is real then you could get into

  840. all the different junk of life and you

  841. cannot you cannot look at it the same

  842. way i cannot look at the fact that I I I

  843. lost a job or didn't get a I didn't get

  844. the promotion or I I got you know for

  845. the 5,000th audition didn't work out but

  846. Jesus is real yeah I know but I was

  847. supposed to get that part but Jesus is

  848. real i know but my marriage is on the

  849. But Jesus is

  850. real it doesn't It doesn't mean you

  851. don't have horrific stuff happen to

  852. you it means that he's

  853. real and it means that he's gone through

  854. something so much more extraordinarily

  855. painful than anything you and I have

  856. gone through that you can trust him to

  857. tell you that he's with you and that

  858. he'll never leave you and that this

  859. isn't the end so this friend says "I

  860. found out that he was real." He says

  861. that Jesus's sufferings are real he

  862. needed to know that his sufferings were

  863. real but why because life has suffering

  864. and when you face suffering you will

  865. either realize that what you built your

  866. life on doesn't work or you will find

  867. out that what you built your life on

  868. actually

  869. works what a Christian will find out is

  870. not that dealing with death is easy what

  871. they will find out is what you built

  872. your life on actually has something for

  873. you when the worst things hit

  874. you i found out his sufferings are real

  875. they were for her and they're for me

  876. even now i needed him to show me he was

  877. real

  878. because what I was going through was

  879. more difficult than I could

  880. handle you know most of us don't deal

  881. with things that we can't handle and I I

  882. found that I'm just getting to the point

  883. of life where I'm running into things

  884. that I can't

  885. handle is that anybody else like it took

  886. you 40 some odd years to realize there's

  887. things you can't

  888. handle those of you that realized it

  889. earlier God bless you that was a gift

  890. i mean I mean

  891. that I can think of friends who lost a

  892. parent when they were like in high

  893. school or

  894. college they learned they learned

  895. something I haven't learned i don't want

  896. to learn

  897. that my parents are right there i'm

  898. going to learn it when they're 108

  899. that's what I've decided the Lord can

  900. teach

  901. me and that's why I have hopefully my

  902. kids will take care of them because

  903. they're I have some nurturing little

  904. ladies i'm just kidding we we

  905. um we do like to joke in our family

  906. about who's going to take care of what

  907. i've already started joking with my kids

  908. who's going to take care of me and I've

  909. told my boys like I really hope you guys

  910. don't have to take care of me that's why

  911. that's why we kept having kids i think

  912. so so we found one that I'm going to let

  913. her do that that's going to be great i'm

  914. going to be very

  915. comfortable it's Cece

  916. yeah it's why we had to have all

  917. five plus a bonus i guess she wasn't the

  918. youngest yeah anyway enough about that

  919. every week I got to bring it up don't I

  920. the five kids blah blah blah i get it

  921. pastor you got five kids talk about it

  922. again over and over again every week can

  923. you come up with another

  924. example so the entire story of scripture

  925. is about a God that shows us that he's

  926. real that that's so okay with

  927. suffering and that's that's what I

  928. suffering is like

  929. fasting because you're you're just that

  930. little bit of of physical suffering

  931. reminds you that life is suffering and

  932. we've spent so much of our life numbing

  933. that right and food numbs it but so much

  934. in life can numb suffering and the

  935. gospel is

  936. feasting but it's also suffering and

  937. it's there for you and you will

  938. sometimes not realize how real he is and

  939. how much he's ready to show you how much

  940. he loves you until life has put you in a

  941. situation where you've got nowhere else

  942. to turn you have nothing that's that's

  943. that's going to give you an answer to

  944. how to deal with that suffering and all

  945. of a sudden all you're left with is "Is

  946. this gospel real jesus are you real i

  947. need you to show me." And that won't

  948. happen in a moment it'll be when you sit

  949. with it because you have nowhere else to

  950. go other than your pain

  951. the world needs people that have sat

  952. with Jesus in their pain and he didn't

  953. leave them and you know he didn't leave

  954. you you know that he showed you

  955. something that was real he's not like

  956. the other

  957. gods second little example i'm ripping

  958. this off from other pastor and I'm

  959. ripping off the example so I'm not going

  960. to overly quote because uh I like the

  961. way I tell it it was probably told

  962. better the first time so think vintage

  963. like Americana like late 1800s early

  964. 1900s train systems to get you

  965. everywhere there was a man living

  966. somewhere kind of out west that he had

  967. one role and he could see off in the he

  968. had the role of changing the train

  969. tracks for the trains that would come

  970. through his little his little area his

  971. town and from his home he had the

  972. ability to to adjust the tracks because

  973. there was only one track or whatever and

  974. so if he didn't adjust them um you know

  975. the train would go off a cliff and blah

  976. blah blah um one day he can see in the

  977. distance his son is playing in the

  978. tracks and he has to make the

  979. decision does his son

  980. live does he change the

  981. tracks and all the passengers die or

  982. does he save his son so does his son

  983. live people die or the people die and he

  984. sacrifices his son

  985. and you can sit with that example and

  986. and you just immediately go well what

  987. would what would you do what would I do

  988. some of you are just like I know exactly

  989. what I would do kill those people

  990. right i mean but imagine it's not even a

  991. real story okay I just I'll just end the

  992. tension a little bit for you there's

  993. been a lot of tension already in my

  994. stories it's not even a real story it's

  995. a real story that I've heard pastors use

  996. but just so you know I'm not going to

  997. end the story for you because it's not a

  998. real

  999. story but the tension is this is this is

1000. the tension of that's the hardest thing

1001. in the world the thing you love the most

  1002. versus the greater

1003. good and that's the entire story of God

1004. is that he's communicating to humanity

1005. that this is how much I love you this is

1006. how I would go out of my most valuable

1007. thing I will give to you and so what do

  1008. we do with that

1009. the major issue that we're dealing with

  1010. is our

1011. security where are you most vulnerable

1012. where do you find your worth where do

  1013. you seek your

  1014. validity it's it's like how is am I

1015. secure anywhere how can I just get some

1016. security well like do people love me am

1017. I doing something positive with my life

1018. we we seek out some measure of

1019. security and what Paul is trying to tell

1020. us is this is your security

1021. this is a kind of

  1022. identity that's there for

1023. you in the most absolute worst

  1024. circumstances of

1025. life god is for you that's what this

1026. passage is talking about but that's a

1027. huge assumption god being for

1028. you paul goes "What then shall we say to

1029. these things if God is for us who can be

1030. against us he who did not spare his own

1031. son but gave him up for us all how will

1032. he not also with him graciously give us

1033. all things the entire premise is he's

1034. for you and he's shown

  1035. you throughout your disciplehip

1036. journey everything is based on that one

1037. core thing we're still a people in

1038. process that seek validation through so

1039. many different things but we're maturing

  1040. we're growing we're moving we're

1041. practicing and in our suffering we're

1042. realizing that God is inviting us into a

1043. place where no one can bring anything

1044. against us and I don't have to prove

1045. anything not because of who I say I am

1046. not because of my truth or my

1047. worth it's fully based on an

1048. external force an external validator and

1049. you know what the only time you really

1050. experience true validation is when

1051. someone that you adore adores

  1052. you it's the

1053. ultimate some of us experienced that

1054. from parents they adored you as much as

1055. you adored them and then many of us

  1056. didn't those of you that didn't that's

1057. why he calls himself father

1058. but regardless of how pure and sound

1059. your earthly relationships are every

1060. earthly relationship will let you down

1061. it is limited and it's meant to limit

1062. you your fasting shows you your

1063. limitations and if you are under the

1064. guise that you can do everything and

1065. that you're in control you

1066. simply are on a waiting game because

1067. it's a matter of time until you look

1068. life in the face and go I'm fragile i'm

  1069. not in control

  1070. what am I worth where's my

1071. validation and if that's true that

1072. there's a God that loves me that

  1073. validates

  1074. me that is the

1075. ultimate i want to invite the team up

1076. and I want to transition this to just a

1077. response a couple questions to ask as we

1078. close we're going to be getting into

1079. some of the the worldview dynamics you

1080. guys remember that i think we can put

1081. that picture up that that silly picture

1082. of uh it's it's Well look at that

1083. picture of the I don't want to say it

1084. because if I say it there we go thank

1085. you has anyone not seen this picture i

1086. feel like this is like one of the most

1087. common anyone not seen this picture

1088. before i see a couple hands not to

1089. embarrass you yeah i don't know where

1090. you've been your whole life this I've

  1091. seen this like a thousand times i don't

1092. know you're supposed to see one of two

1093. things right what do you see

1094. how many of you see a beautiful

1095. woman how many of you see an old older

  1096. less beautiful

1097. woman you see both because you've seen

1098. it a million times just like me i can

1099. see both because I've been told to see

1100. both uh research shows that the younger

1101. you are the more likely you are to see

1102. the beautiful woman the older you are

1103. the more likely to see the older woman

1104. the point is that we have worldviews we

1105. have lenses we never see things

1106. perfectly and you'll see things first

1107. you can Google this this is going to be

1108. a bad shot those of you trying to take a

1109. picture of it the point is is this you

1110. are predisposed to see things the way

  1111. you see

  1112. them worldviews

1113. clash multiple things are there at the

  1114. same time

  1115. we're trusting

1116. for for a way of life and a

1117. disciplehip that's surrendering our own

1118. viewpoints our own worldviews that are

1119. not working and that fail us and we're

1120. asking the Lord to show us real worth

  1121. real truth real

  1122. validity real

1123. identity that can take on any suffering

  1124. [Music]

1125. secularism has several problems it's

1126. lost identity it's lost the

1127. story and it's lost true

1128. freedom we'll be going after this in the

  1129. coming

1130. weeks it's redefined freedom as the the

1131. freedom from constraints nothing can

1132. hold me back and tell me what to do i'm

  1133. free to do

  1134. [Music]

1135. whatever the gospel uses freedom with

  1136. purpose

1137. is a whole different kind of freedom

  1138. it's a

  1139. freedom to live your

1140. life and to lay it

1141. down and whatever the world's forces

1142. are that bring anything against the name

  1143. of

1144. Jesus they cannot take you

1145. out and they cannot keep you from what

  1146. he has on offer

1147. just want to invite us to minister into

  1148. a few

1149. things if you were just stirred this

1150. morning just by a sense that you're

1151. seeking validation in something in the

1152. world myself included I'm standing with

1153. you there's some measure of validation

1154. that you know that if that was taken

1155. away from you you'd have a real hard

  1156. time managing that

1157. and you just want to stand today and ask

1158. the Holy Spirit to put his hand on that

1159. you're not expecting everything to be

  1160. solved today you're simply

1161. saying "God I invite you to fill this

1162. void in my life." If that's

1163. you there's a validation that you want

1164. the Holy Spirit to be your validator i

1165. just invite you to stand

  1166. [Music]

1167. there's some of us in the room that are

1168. just new to all this and you're just

1169. seeking and you're just curious and

1170. hungry and I just feel the Lord just

1171. saying just welcome be ask the questions

1172. stay curious you don't have to have it

1173. all figured out if this God is real he's

  1174. patient and

1175. kind to stick with him in the process

1176. and I just invite you to open up your

1177. heart open up your mind and just

1178. invite this God and invite Jesus if

1179. you're real be real to me and show

1180. me and those of us in the room that have

1181. been trying to follow Jesus maybe for

  1182. for many

1183. years where we still are aware that

1184. there is just far too many things in my

1185. life that I find validation

1186. in give me a a holy disgust for the

1187. things that are never going to satisfy

  1188. my

1189. cravings and would you reestablish my

1190. desires and my cravings to the things

1191. that are going to bring

1192. life and that can sustain any amount of

  1193. suffering that this life

  1194. [Music]

  1195. brings that's our

1196. cry we invite this Welcome back Brian

1197. and Sam thank you for being here they're

1198. going to lead us in a song and then

1199. we're going to invite you into ministry

1200. make that cry of validation only in him

1201. make that the cry of your heart and

  1202. let's respond together
