  1. in the presence and focused on the Lord

  2. yeah so first question is when did you

  3. notice it today and now you know a

  4. little bit about your state coming into

  5. your spiritual formation this morning

  6. i'm just kidding but here here's um this

  7. is a struggle I always have i just want

  8. to be vulnerable with you i joked with

  9. the guys that um get the title for the

  10. message for the streaming and all that

  11. good stuff that I I always wrestle with

  12. the sermon titles um for several reasons

  13. i have a I have sometimes a bit of a

  14. creative uncction and I want to do a

  15. good job with that but here's the

  16. problem is that um everything everything

  17. these days turns into clickbait right so

  18. um and I'm not just judging those of you

  19. uh that are young and sprite and and you

  20. know you're you're living in LA maybe uh

  21. single or you know not not bound by any

  22. I don't know responsibilities in the

  23. same way that others of us that have

  24. made other significant life decisions

  25. whether on purpose or by accident are

  26. living in myself multiple children as I

  27. mentioned too many times every

  28. message I don't get the chance to wake

  29. up and go oh you know what am I going to

  30. listen to or go to church today or

  31. whatever else that there's a dynamic

  32. where I was remembering in San Diego

  33. this is when Sue and I had just gotten

  34. married um we were part of a church part

  35. of a local church but we would often

  36. kind of just um you know decide on a on

  37. a Sunday if we were going doing

  38. something else what we might listen to

  39. right a podcast they had podcasts back

  40. then but you had to download it in

  41. advance right or you had an automatic

  42. one on your iPod or whatever right

  43. anyone remember

  44. that no one cares okay so uh they we we

  45. would um maybe go listen to a podcast

  46. but what what what do you end up doing

  47. you even back then many many years ago

  48. you're still scrolling to be like what's

  49. that what's the title that I feel like

  50. is going to feed my soul today right and

  51. and so we do the same thing what's

  52. what's good about all of you is that

  53. some of you might be here because you

  54. saw a catchy title uh whenever we posted

  55. that most of you are not it's because

  56. this is your this is your home right and

  57. and uh the reality is is that but I'm

  58. I'm tempted my my title today does Jesus

  59. have a better offer than the cult of

  60. self i don't know if I love that title

  61. or hate that title i don't know if it's

  62. too long too catchy or perfect uh I

  63. would say probably most of half of you

  64. at least are like "What the heck is he

  65. talking about it's so long what cult of

  66. self that's so uh but here's the here's

  67. the thing um if I would if I would have

  68. titled this just like how the Bible

  69. titles things like it was so boring and

  70. it would be so nice and perfect and

  71. whatever else you know books if you've

  72. ever seen a book they title it and then

  73. you read it and it's something

  74. completely different because they had to

  75. get you to buy the book first to give

  76. you the information." That's just the

  77. tension I feel like we're in even even

  78. in this little setting but what I want

  79. to do is not be too consumed with

  80. clickbait and convincing you to listen

  81. to the message those of you that are

  82. obviously already here it's it's to get

  83. at the root if I if I could pick a title

  84. for this message it's would you die

  85. already but I just felt like that's just

  86. terrible

  87. clickbait depressing not hopeful but I

  88. really feel like that's actually what

  89. Jesus is trying to do here would you die

  90. already man you're quiet i'm going to

  91. need some more affirmation i'm still an

  92. insecure person in process i don't have

  93. the confidence in Christ yet to go

  94. through this whole message with no

  95. interaction with you please so okay

  96. we're all in process so would you die

  97. would you die already uh it is good news

  98. it is good news the problem is is if you

  99. don't if you don't consider yourself

  100. dead uh then you haven't quite uh

  101. responded to Jesus's invitation let me

  102. just start reading because I can tell

  103. I'm about to go on to too many rabbit

  104. trails verse uh 13 of chapter 16 of

  105. Matthew says this now when Jesus came

  106. into the district of Cesaria Philippi

  107. we'll talk about that's a very specific

  108. area that he is going to on purpose

  109. because Jesus is given an ancient

  110. PowerPoint presentation to his disciples

  111. from afar to the region of Cesaria

  112. Philippi he asked his disciples his own

  113. disciples his intimate followers who do

  114. people say that the son of man is

  115. referring to himself and they said "Some

  116. say John the Baptist others say Elijah

  117. others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

  118. These are all normal sayings to really

  119. uh highly respected uh prophets or

  120. ministers of the kingdom in that day he

  121. said to them "But who do you say that I

  122. am?" And so the tension is immediately

  123. not just what are the vibes out there

  124. what are people saying what's the

  125. clickbait on who I am it's I want to

  126. know who the followers closest to me

  127. actually say that I am

  128. have you have you started to understand

  129. who I

  130. am simon Peter responds "You are the

  131. Christ the son of the living

  132. God." And that's the first affirmation

  133. of Christ's identity in the entire

  134. gospel we're in chapter 16 by the

  135. way you are the Christ the son of the

  136. living God and Jesus answered

  137. him "Blessed are you Simon Barjonah." He

  138. uses a specific name "for flesh and

  139. blood has not revealed this to you but

  140. my father who is in heaven." So he's

  141. even emphasizing in this moment you've

  142. started to understand who I am but you

  143. couldn't even do that in your own human

  144. strength and I tell you you are Peter

  145. and on this rock I will build my church

  146. and the gates of hell shall not prevail

  147. against it i will give you the keys of

  148. the kingdom of heaven and whatever you

  149. bind on earth shall shall be bound in

  150. heaven the real Greek is shall have been

  151. bound in heaven and whatever you loose

  152. on earth shall have been loosed in

  153. heaven meaning that these things are

  154. done in heaven now live them out here on

  155. earth then he strictly charged the

  156. disciples to tell no one that he was the

  157. Christ so he's basically

  158. saying you're starting to get it but you

  159. still don't really know what you're

  160. doing and what you're saying so why

  161. don't you hold back a little

  162. bit

  163. and Jesus's wisdom is affirmed by the

  164. next couple sentences and lines from

  165. that time Jesus began to show his

  166. disciples that he must go to Jerusalem

  167. suffer many things everyone say

  168. "Suffer."

  169. Jesus wants us to suffer

  170. no one wants to say that jesus wants us

  171. to suffer

  172. many

  173. things many things go to Jerusalem

  174. suffer many things from the elders and

  175. chief priests and scribes and be killed

  176. and on the third day be raised and Peter

  177. took a took him aside peter took him

  178. aside now Peter is

  179. leader this is this is the most

  180. severe 180 that you will see in the

  181. entire Bible

  182. peter acknowledges that he's the son of

  183. God the first

  184. one now all of a sudden Jesus talks

  185. about suffering and Peter's like "Whoa

  186. whoa whoa let me take you aside Rabbi

  187. let me show you some things now that I'm

  188. Simon

  189. Barjonah the rock let the rock tell you

  190. what's up let me tell you what the rock

  191. is

  192. cooking." Four of you got that reference

  193. okay

  194. pulls him aside peter does not like what

  195. Jesus just

  196. said and Peter rebukes him rebuke is as

  197. strong a language as the Bible knows how

  198. we We just hear

  199. rebuke rebuke it's a nice little word

  200. rebuke uh it's like a fight with words

  201. rebuke is I'm going to stand my ground

  202. defy

  203. you that's what Peter is doing to the

  204. son of the living

  205. God son of the living God let me take

  206. you aside let me defy

  207. you far be it from you Lord this shall

  208. never happen to you you don't know what

  209. you're talking about no you're not going

  210. to do this this isn't going to happen

  211. and then Jesus turned to

  212. Peter and gives the same rebuke to Peter

  213. that he gave to the devil in Matthew 4

  214. the beginning of the

  215. gospel get behind me Satan you're a

  216. hindrance to me and and here's really

  217. the only thing we're getting at because

  218. we're going after disciplehip he tells

  219. them that for you are not setting your

  220. mind on the things of God but on the

  221. things of

  222. man there's always two options there's

  223. always two trees in the garden there's

  224. good and

  225. evil and good people can live out evil

  226. doctrine evil ways while still being

  227. good people you can partner with

  228. mindsets that are useless meaningless

  229. and lead to darkness while being an

  230. amazing human being and

  231. Peter acknowledges that this is the son

  232. of God the first one he's an early

  233. adopter and yet he still when Jesus

  234. tells him exactly why he's the son of

  235. God what he's come for and outlines his

  236. mission Peter rejects it completely and

  237. doesn't get

  238. it and Jesus defies him completely and

  239. so how are we to look at this as

  240. disciples we're in a series on

  241. disciplehip we're calling it disruptive

  242. disciplehip in a secular age all that

  243. means is we are inviting Jesus to

  244. disrupt us in our pursuit of him

  245. disciplehip is just who are you

  246. following we're all disciples of

  247. something christians are disciples of

  248. Jesus that's it that's all we're doing

  249. we're learning to follow him die for him

  250. and then be raised up and live for him

  251. and when you consider yourself already

  252. dead there's nothing this world can take

  253. from you because the ultimate thing that

  254. life has over you is life and death and

  255. the gospel says that this is not the end

  256. and therefore the way of Jesus uh cannot

  257. cannot come under the way of the world

  258. the way of the world always comes under

  259. the way of the

  260. kingdom and he demonstrates that in his

  261. life death and resurrection and as he

  262. tries to tell his disciples a piece of

  263. what his mission is they don't

  264. understand it and my

  265. my the way this hit me is I realized

  266. that I still don't get this i still in

  267. my disciplehip don't fully

  268. understand that the gospel of Jesus the

  269. cross and the resurrection is something

  270. so significant that I have to

  271. continually daily understand and live in

  272. and step in and take risk to see does

  273. this actually work and will I actually

  274. live this out or am I a hindrance to

  275. Jesus because I'm ultimately trying to

  276. resist his way

  277. what Peter shows us is the most

  278. committed the most committed one that

  279. sees Jesus for who he is can still have

  280. an entire way of life that's a hindrance

  281. to his

  282. mission that's sobering more of that in

  283. a second but what are we doing with

  284. disciplehip in this moment all we're

  285. doing disciplehip is the intentional

  286. process of becoming like Jesus by

  287. countering the cultural forces that

  288. shape us and then actively living in his

  289. way that's it but here's the thing i I

  290. heard um Simon Synynic gave this uh this

  291. analogy of choice and I I found I found

  292. it helpful he he he talked about um the

  293. shoe salesman here in Los Angeles in the

  294. 50s that had a women's shoe store any of

  295. you still shop at women's shoe stores

  296. just curious is it all online or are

  297. there still shoe stores in LA that you

  298. go to what would they be who goes to a

  299. shoe store what are they

  300. called okay dsl Nordstrom's just curious

  301. just curious for some for some of you

  302. significant others first time hearing

  303. about this or it's just a no whatever uh

  304. so the shoe salesman he he had this

  305. incredible intuition

  306. uh to not just the mind of a woman but

  307. to the mind of decision-making he goes

  308. this is what this is what happens um a

  309. lady would walk into the store could I

  310. please try this on uh sure here you go

  311. uh and could I try this one on sure here

  312. you go uh and could I also try this one

  313. on uh sure which one would you like to

  314. take

  315. back because he goes if you give them

  316. three choices they will choose none if

  317. you give them two choices they will

  318. choose

  319. one only give them two

  320. choices now before any of you consider

  321. me a sexist that just thinks that women

  322. have a small brain or something like

  323. that that application I'm not saying

  324. that first of all I I think if we're

  325. talking about a simple brain that's the

  326. male brain i was bombasted with the idea

  327. that women would benefit or think that

  328. way too that's because I'm always

  329. thinking that way just give me two

  330. choices

  331. right we are bombarded with choice with

  332. our pursuit of freedom we want the

  333. restrictions are we want to we want to

  334. to get rid of anything that limits our

  335. ability to have choice and yet we all

  336. understand that too much choice is

  337. overwhelming the gospel is always simple

  338. god always makes it simple for his

  339. people again from the

  340. garden there's two trees there's good

  341. and evil follow me or follow the way of

  342. the world the way of the world isn't

  343. evil humans the way of the world are

  344. mindsets worldviews and perspectives

  345. that lead to death ultimately

  346. and the way of the kingdom leads to life

  347. and what he's inviting us into is a

  348. mindset perspective and worldview that

  349. leads to life and yet we live in a world

  350. that has perspectives that influence

  351. ours and sometimes in the name of Jesus

  352. you're the son of God i follow you i'll

  353. die for you and then we find out well

  354. until they're suffering and we find that

  355. Peter is still dealing with

  356. this up until the night that Jesus is

  357. betrayed he still

  358. cannot live into what he says he's going

  359. to i'll die for

  360. you he says that later in the gospels

  361. right and then of course he denies him

  362. three

  363. times and he almost cannot take the

  364. shame that comes with that and Jesus

  365. restores him and he becomes the leader

  366. of the church that transforms the

  367. earth uh so we're going after a kind of

  368. disciplehip that has four aspects to it

  369. imitating

  370. Jesus from just not just belief to

  371. actually following him that's

  372. intentional in our formation where we

  373. actually practice intentional rhythms

  374. and practices that shape the heart mind

  375. soul and inner alignment with his ways

  376. that's why we're going after things like

  377. fasting scripture prayer and we're going

  378. to be going through others throughout

  379. the year countercultural living we have

  380. to understand that following Jesus means

  381. leave living against the cultural norms

  382. of of individualism of our secular age

  383. consumerism superficiality all these

  384. things and saying "How in the midst of

  385. this do I demonstrate and live into

  386. another realm into another world?" And

  387. then finally we have to live in an

  388. accountable community if we don't then

  389. we're still just trying to do this Jesus

  390. stuff on our own and the hard part about

  391. that is when you come in and under an

  392. accountable community we screw this up

  393. royally

  394. royally uh you know I love it when

  395. churches have just like whether it's a

  396. vision board or they have a night where

  397. everyone just like posts wonderful

  398. things that have happened to them or

  399. things the Lord's done in their life um

  400. I think I have nightmares of like if we

  401. if we had one where everyone posts like

  402. the hurt from the church this like

  403. church that still happened despite the

  404. fact that you're here and you love it

  405. and then I'd have to like read and

  406. process each one i think that's my worst

  407. nightmare because it's it's a reality we

  408. are so imperfect as amazing as and as

  409. much as I love this community and I'm so

  410. proud to be a part of it and it just

  411. boggles my mind that we get to do this

  412. in this moment in history we have so

  413. many flaws so many issues and and at the

  414. end of the day when we ask you to be

  415. accountable to a community we're

  416. basically saying would you risk being

  417. hurt and trust Jesus anyway

  418. right but that's what any relational

  419. depth is ever whether you're talking

  420. about marriage or a significant other or

  421. even a family relationship it doesn't

  422. matter if you want deep relationship

  423. with anyone you have to risk some

  424. measure of risk and trust that that

  425. person can let you down and hurt you and

  426. they will that's the promise and Jesus

  427. is saying you're going to be let down

  428. you're going to suffer you're even going

  429. to

  430. die and the good news is it's not the

  431. end so here's what we want to do let's

  432. look at let's look at a couple of things

  433. that come out of this passage i've

  434. already touched on some of them and then

  435. what do we respond and what do we do

  436. about it so in verses 13 to 20 Jesus is

  437. at this point at the beginning of the

  438. passage he's still a positive figure

  439. among the wider followers that are

  440. interested in him and following him but

  441. he's pressing the disciples for their

  442. response and and he's always upping the

  443. standard for his disciples he's not

  444. letting them just have some sort of

  445. surface level understanding of who he is

  446. and yet he's patient and gets that

  447. they're in process and that this is not

  448. perfect so again this is the first

  449. acknowledgement of Peter uh saying that

  450. this is the Messiah massive deal you are

  451. the Christ the son of the living God

  452. this is even a shift from what that he

  453. said about him just a few chapters

  454. before in Matthew 14 and this isn't just

  455. this is let me just read you what um RT

  456. France says in his commentary on Matthew

  457. he says "In contrast to the title son of

  458. God this demonstrates that Peter has

  459. finally come to a deep and personal

  460. recognition of Jesus's unique

  461. relationship to the father." So it's a

  462. huge huge deal this is massively

  463. significant because it indicates that

  464. Peter apparently the first to do so

  465. among the disciples sees in Jesus

  466. something that goes beyond some merely

  467. nationalistic fervor that's to even put

  468. this in context to maybe modern day

  469. it's not just a nationalistic fervor to

  470. an awareness of Jesus's special

  471. relationship with God so he's starting

  472. to get that this is bigger than

  473. just some Jewish thing and this is

  474. something that God is

  475. on and then we see his name the rock

  476. peter is it's you are Peter when he says

  477. you are Peter that's paralleling that

  478. you are the Christ so it's like Jesus is

  479. saying "Since you can tell me who I am

  480. Peter I'm going to tell you who you

  481. are." And he calls him out and again

  482. there's this picture I think we have

  483. back there of Cesaria Philippi or you

  484. don't know what it is if you're doing

  485. the slides but um there's a picture of

  486. this uh geographic location there you go

  487. um Sue and I had the privilege of going

  488. there a couple times on tours to Israel

  489. uh this area is uh one of our favorite

  490. spots it doesn't take long to go there

  491. um but you should you should know here's

  492. a couple tidbits from my notes on this

  493. place it's the capital uh of Herod

  494. Phillip where there were a bunch of

  495. Herods it was also colonized at one

  496. point by Alexander the Great beautiful

  497. place but it was a very pagan place

  498. there were like no Jews in there it was

  499. very fertile and and therefore they

  500. thought that the fertility god actually

  501. worked because of how fertile this place

  502. was so um there was a spring you can see

  503. the little kind of uh divot hole in the

  504. rock that dark place there's a spring in

  505. there so you can literally see exactly

  506. the geography that what they saw in the

  507. ancient

  508. world and there was a belief in

  509. resurrecting the fertility god back to

  510. life every year and they had all kinds

  511. of you know parades and ceremonies and

  512. things of that nature uh pan was the

  513. name of that god there it was a statue

  514. that was a six- foot tall phallic object

  515. for lack of a better term so don't spend

  516. too much time thinking about that uh

  517. we're at church after all uh would this

  518. they would parade this object throughout

  519. the the land and the men would sacrifice

  520. to it by pleasuring themselves that's

  521. the kind of town they were in so to a

  522. Jew this they'd also have prostitutes

  523. and priests having um sex with goats and

  524. all kinds of other animalistic um

  525. beautiful uh acts of worship and and

  526. many believe this place uh would never

  527. exist at the same time as Jesus Christ

  528. the son of God like right next door but

  529. this is right on their path towards

  530. Jerusalem so he stops says they came to

  531. this area and Jesus chose to give this

  532. speech and have this exchange with Peter

  533. here who do you say the son of man is on

  534. this rock this was known as the rock and

  535. this was also known as the gates of

  536. Hades because they thought it had access

  537. point to this underworld and Jesus is

  538. saying on this rock I will build my

  539. church and the gates of

  540. Hades will not

  541. prevail in this exchange with Peter it's

  542. also the first use of the term eklesia

  543. which is the Greek term for assembly

  544. church or gathering in the gospels so in

  545. this moment Peter is promised that he

  546. will become the foundation on which

  547. Christ is going to build the

  548. church the point is this jesus is

  549. encouraging his disciples that no matter

  550. how his eklesia his church may be

  551. attacked in a given place or a given

  552. time his church can never be

  553. extinguished and will never permanently

  554. be

  555. defeated he's promising endurance

  556. forever and he's making as bold a

  557. statement as he can possibly

  558. make and then verse 19 it shows how

  559. Jesus is building this church on Peter

  560. the keys of the kingdom talking about

  561. authority to bind and

  562. loose really all this is referring to is

  563. an opening to the entrance of God's

  564. kingdom through their witness and the

  565. preaching and the apostolic ministry

  566. that they have but here's here's what I

  567. I'm I'm fascinated with he tells them

  568. not to tell anybody this happens

  569. throughout the gospels on several

  570. occasions in this one why does he tell

  571. them not to tell anybody

  572. i think the best rationale is is Peter

  573. and the others views of Jesus is still

  574. inadequate they still don't fully get it

  575. number one so number one they don't

  576. fully get it it's inadequate their view

  577. so if they went around telling everyone

  578. they would be kind of partially telling

  579. the gospel they didn't they they would

  580. not say you know something because you

  581. can regurgitate the accurate information

  582. like we do today oh I took the class i

  583. passed the test i got an A i therefore

  584. know physics no you don't

  585. yeah I

  586. Yeah just going to give some personal

  587. examples such as I don't remember one

  588. thing I ever took a test on some of you

  589. might i don't just because you took a

  590. test on something and guessed it doesn't

  591. mean you know anything the Jewish

  592. understanding of knowing meant that as a

  593. disciple that you lived it out and in

  594. this context a rabbi would affirm you

  595. that this disciple knows the gospel and

  596. he's basically saying they don't know

  597. the

  598. gospel and yet he's affirming Peter that

  599. this is a big

  600. breakthrough second Peter's not yet

  601. prepared for the road to the cross

  602. anymore than he was the night it

  603. occurred meaning he doesn't know it and

  604. he's not ready for it so why does Jesus

  605. tell them not to tell anyone uh because

  606. they still don't know what they're

  607. talking about and they're still not what

  608. ready to live in what he's putting on

  609. offer and

  610. third this is this is shown in the the

  611. verses that I haven't read but go right

  612. after neither Peter nor any of the

  613. disciples recognize and understand that

  614. Jesus's death will precede the

  615. establishment of the church and that

  616. Jesus's followers were are going to

  617. suffer before God's kingdom

  618. triumphs so it's a big deal

  619. now looking at the final couple verses

  620. you see that the issue then that they're

  621. bringing up is exposed peter cannot see

  622. past the need of Jesus's suffering or

  623. his own suffering jesus is promising

  624. that this is going to be difficult it's

  625. going to be

  626. challenging and I think often even today

  627. we look at the modern world and what

  628. we're trying to do is to eliminate and

  629. minimize suffering as much as possible

  630. the heart of that can be as good as it

  631. gets when Christians are trying to

  632. minimize other people's hurting and

  633. suffering and injustice that's exactly

  634. what the gospel should lead us to do

  635. however when with this obsession of

  636. minimize suffering leads us to a life

  637. where we're trying to avoid challenges

  638. avoid pain avoid sitting in the the

  639. darkness of life and feeling like we

  640. don't if if I enter into this I don't

  641. know if I can survive it or that

  642. thinking that that means that we're off

  643. or we're wrong you've missed the gospel

  644. the gospel takes

  645. people into the dying into the suffering

  646. into the unknown into the like my life

  647. is not my own

  648. stuff and that's where the dreams that

  649. we have kept going back to over the last

  650. season how do we dream how do we bring

  651. big dreams God-sized dreams kingdom

  652. dreams and at the same time

  653. say "I'm gonna die today

  654. again but I'm a dreamer i've got big

  655. dreams god's given me so many

  656. dreams about

  657. dying

  658. death pain

  659. i I

  660. just I just feel like we still I I still

  661. don't

  662. fully get the

  663. tension and the ugly side of the church

  664. is when you stop

  665. dreaming and you just live in death and

  666. depression that's not the gospel it's

  667. just that your dreams have to be bigger

  668. than your own life

  669. the key to know whether you're dreaming

  670. accurately is that your dreams could not

  671. possibly be contained in your own life

  672. and your death might be the catalyst for

  673. your

  674. dreams to

  675. explode every great leader if they had a

  676. dream worth dying for and they died the

  677. dream went

  678. on and that works outside the kingdom of

  679. Jesus if that's just a tidbit of the way

  680. that the world works imagine this gospel

  681. and if every single one of our dreams

  682. was connected to this reality if if I

  683. couldn't tell you the dreams of my life

  684. apart from the gospel and that I'd be

  685. willing to lay my life down for these

  686. dreams then you know you're getting

  687. somewhere because this world and this

  688. life and this body cannot enslave you to

  689. your dreams and keep you from them and

  690. your life then becomes the place that

  691. you sew the seeds towards those dreams

  692. and your dream is big enough and it's

  693. extending into a place of eternity where

  694. it will take generations to live it

  695. out and that's really hard because

  696. that's so that's that's so overwhelming

  697. and that's so impossible and that's kind

  698. of the point our dreams are meant to be

  699. impossible

  700. the kingdom if you think that you can

  701. control and dictate your life in the

  702. kingdom of Jesus you simply have not

  703. understood how good how massive how

  704. significant his plans are and his dreams

  705. are for

  706. you peter can't see past the needs of

  707. his own suffering he makes an about face

  708. he rebukes Jesus and then Jesus rebukes

  709. him

  710. you know my my um my little one my my

  711. four-year-old it's amazing to me how she

  712. can um in one moment we just had a

  713. moment this week um you know we got a we

  714. got a truck for the church to to haul

  715. this uh big trailer in every week and

  716. it's a hideous truck it's all bent up i

  717. bought from a construction site and uh

  718. she loves the truck like she every time

  719. I take her out there um just to like

  720. move it around or something she wants to

  721. sit in the front seat right and and and

  722. she just tells me literally 75 times a

  723. minute "Daddy I love the truck i love

  724. Daddy I love this truck i love this

  725. truck." And she she calls it my truck i

  726. love my truck Daddy or our truck

  727. something like that she said over and

  728. over again "I love our truck Daddy i

  729. love this

  730. truck." And uh she she like found in the

  731. midst of that I don't know she found

  732. like a few like some loose change and

  733. and she's just so excited it's like she

  734. she's in the truck and she finds some

  735. change and goes "Hey can I use these

  736. pennies?" And they were all quarters uh

  737. can I use these pennies uh to go to Dank

  738. Donuts and ride the rides cuz there's

  739. this doughnut place in Big Bear called

  740. Dank Donuts haven't been there it is

  741. phenomenal i break all of my fasting and

  742. dietary convictions for Dank Donuts in

  743. Big

  744. Bear and um so there's these like old

  745. school rides that just like a pony that

  746. just does this for like it doesn't even

  747. go straight it just kind of does this

  748. for like 45 seconds and the

  749. four-year-old thinks that's phenomenal

  750. she's been to Disney she's been to every

  751. theme park Los Angeles

  752. has but the broken down pony ride at the

  753. Dank Donuts in Big Bear Lake California

  754. that's her

  755. dream and so she's just getting excited

  756. about everything i love this truck i

  757. love this pennies that can we can go

  758. well you said we can go riding dad I

  759. love you Daddy i love you over and over

  760. and over again like all the love all the

  761. love and I'm just like we've just done

  762. such a good job with this one i just

  763. like life is complete i love her so

  764. much 5 seconds

  765. later i don't know what happened i mean

  766. a sibling like took a penny and um I

  767. hate you

  768. the purity of her love the passion of

  769. her

  770. hate one moment in one moment and I

  771. think I'm above

  772. that i'm exactly the same i just

  773. spiritualize it because my theology is

  774. so

  775. good bless their

  776. heart that's how we were learned in I

  777. grew up in the south when you hate

  778. someone you're really not you just say

  779. bless their heart that

  780. means I'm not allowed to curse them so I

  781. will bless them with a

  782. curse curse of spirit bless of mouth you

  783. don't know what I really mean but

  784. everyone does and that's just me trying

  785. to process my old

  786. self with my new self's verbs

  787. language not everything i mean James

  788. talks about the power of the tongue yeah

  789. uh the tongue could be deceitful it can

  790. say the right thing with the wrong

  791. [Music]

  792. spirit peter said the wrong the right

  793. thing and then the wrong thing with the

  794. right spirit and then the wrong

  795. spirit i want to read to you what what

  796. Jesus's encounter with the enemy was in

  797. Matthew 4 early in the gospels this is

  798. when Jesus is being tempted in the

  799. wilderness and fasting so it connects

  800. perfectly to our

  801. practice jesus said to the devil "Again

  802. it is written you shall not put the Lord

  803. your God to the test." Again the devil

  804. took Jesus to a very high mountain

  805. showed him all the kingdoms of the world

  806. and their glory and he said to him "All

  807. these I will give you if you will fall

  808. down and worship me." Then Jesus said to

  809. him "Be gone Satan for it is written you

  810. shall worship the Lord your God and him

  811. alone shall you serve." Then the devil

  812. left him and behold angels came and

  813. ministered to him

  814. so Peter's words here in the chapter

  815. that we're in aggressively protest

  816. against what Jesus has said about his

  817. death and

  818. resurrection but the point is this jesus

  819. is calling out the same thing in Peter

  820. as he just called out in the devil the

  821. devil is trying to get

  822. Jesus the easy path to what he came for

  823. just bow down and worship and you don't

  824. have to go through all the suffering

  825. i'll just make it real easy for

  826. you he just the devil just wants the

  827. human desire i just want to be

  828. worshiped and what the what Matthew is

  829. so brilliantly doing here is basically

  830. showing us that Peter is

  831. us we say with our lips that this is

  832. king and yet the reality is when we're

  833. confronted with the realities of

  834. following the king we really don't want

  835. it we don't want the pain we don't want

  836. the hardship we don't want the

  837. suffering but the beauty is that this

  838. isn't the end of the

  839. gospels this isn't the end of Peter's

  840. story and it's not the end of yours and

  841. it's not the end of

  842. mine look face to face with our capacity

  843. to buckle when we're confronted with

  844. suffering that's the point what will you

  845. do when you're confronted with

  846. suffering

  847. now the only thing that we

  848. need is a friend my my friend Jim

  849. Caveell who we just had dinner with this

  850. week was wearing a hat to dinner

  851. Wednesday and the hat just said "I'm

  852. already

  853. dead." He he had the audacity to give me

  854. credit for that like I had that in a

  855. sermon that he heard a while back i

  856. don't even remember so it probably

  857. wasn't me he's getting old so maybe he's

  858. just selective memory but I like the

  859. phrase and I like the hat and if you can

  860. find that merch we'll sell it out here

  861. for like discount no profit i just want

  862. people to understand I'm already dead is

  863. the

  864. gospel i'm already dead is what I get up

  865. every day and confront every challenge

  866. in life i can face this because I'm

  867. already dead what What is consumed in

  868. that phrase i can't raise myself

  869. i can't breathe life on dead

  870. things i can't consider myself dead to

  871. sin and alive to Christ as Paul says

  872. that's not possible so the gospel is not

  873. possible therefore I've surrendered to

  874. another story in another

  875. way and therefore there's hope because

  876. I'm not living under the weight of

  877. performance and achievement and

  878. everything else the secular lie wants to

  879. give me there's a fresh worldview and

  880. I'm already dead and the good news is

  881. all I have to do is follow him

  882. i'm following him or I'm not there's

  883. only two trees there's only two choices

  884. i'm following him or I'm not are you

  885. following him or are you

  886. not and do your steps match your

  887. tongue that's really the only thing

  888. happening

  889. here confront your

  890. heart look what you're stepping into

  891. check your

  892. mouth hunger for

  893. more would you stand i want to pray and

  894. the team can come up we're going to

  895. worship into

  896. this a few things for us to apply you

  897. can get close your eyes you can just get

  898. in a comfortable state of just response

  899. i want us to walk away today we have two

  900. choices but I want you to step into just

  901. one worldviews

  902. matter theology matters but theology

  903. doesn't matter because we have to have

  904. the right words theology matters because

  905. what you believe will dictate your

  906. actions and the problem that we have is

  907. that we have believers that declare one

  908. thing and have the best theology and yet

  909. their feet don't follow

  910. myself included this is a daily

  911. task of getting up and surrendering to

  912. the way of Jesus that his story is

  913. better than mine and that I want to live

  914. a life of dreams that can't be fulfilled

  915. in my

  916. lifetime that doesn't mean you don't set

  917. goals and fiveyear plans and all of

  918. those things it's just that's not the

  919. preeminent that's not the ultimate

  920. that's just a piece of how I set up both

  921. my daily life my fiveyear plan my

  922. 10-year plan

  923. i I believe in all of it a fresh mission

  924. statement for your family we were

  925. processing that this week it's all of

  926. that stuff that bigness these dreams are

  927. so good you should do that for your

  928. career you should do that for your

  929. relationships all that's

  930. great but your ultimate dream has to

  931. connect with this gospel and this cross

  932. and it has to start with I'm already

  933. dead and I'm constantly learning to put

  934. the world view of the kingdom and the

  935. worldview currently of this world which

  936. is an individual self-centered cult of

  937. self focused on eliminating suffering

  938. and the gospel says follow me into it

  939. and trust me in the process and maybe

  940. God isn't punishing you he may he often

  941. doesn't bring the suffering to you he

  942. uses it and if you reject him in the

  943. wilderness the wilderness of your

  944. suffering you miss out at knowing where

  945. God is you keep looking for him in the

  946. promised land and he's still waiting for

  947. you in the wilderness to show up for you

  948. and to be with you in your pain the

  949. spirit led Jesus into the wilderness he

  950. didn't wait for him in the promised

  951. land some of us that's just a mindset

  952. shift right now you think he's waiting

  953. for you somewhere that you aren't and

  954. he's with you right now and he wants to

  955. know you and he wants to lift up your

  956. eyes and he wants to be with you in the

  957. [Music]

  958. process holy Spirit we invite you shift

  959. our worldview right now in Jesus name

  960. renew our minds renew our hearts

  961. so invite this team to lead us and then

  962. I want to close with another

  963. moment but as we worship I want you to

  964. see how Jesus's tone here is so intense

  965. but remember so much of our problem as

  966. Christians and the clickbait that's out

  967. there in the hemispheres that that makes

  968. me cringe is when Christians lose the

  969. tone of Jesus and it's not because Jesus

  970. was kind and nice all the time jesus was

  971. so compassionate and patient to the

  972. marginalized he's he's fragile with them

  973. he calls them friend daughter child but

  974. then to the religious leaders he's

  975. calling them hypocrites and vipers he

  976. uses his most intense language here in

  977. all the gospels his most intense

  978. language is to his

  979. disciples it's the worst thing he said

  980. to anyone is right here

  981. sometimes the harsh

  982. voice of Jesus is what we need because

  983. he's calling you higher to another way
