If you're sitting in here, it doesn't
-
matter what how good of a church you go
-
to. Doesn't matter how good the message
-
is, doesn't matter how good the worship
-
is. The state that Jesus requires us
-
when we come before him every time
-
before we get transformed is a state of
-
desperation.
-
It is a state of desperation because
-
when we are desperate, we have no more
-
pride.
-
James 4 says that God opposes the
-
prideful and he gives grace to the
-
humble.
-
>> He actually will stiff arm if there's
-
pride in us. And this demoniac had
-
received the transformation that he was
-
looking for because he came to the state
-
of desperation.
-
And you and I cannot have transformation
-
without desperation.
-
>> We cannot receive much from God because
-
as long as We have an inkling of pride
-
left in us. You cannot hear his teaching
-
because that little pride says whispers
-
to us, but I can still do it.
-
I know the way.
-
And every and Jesus will not come back
-
with pride.
-
He's waiting for us to come to a place
-
of desperation. If we're looking for
-
life transformation, we're we're living
-
in a culture of great self-determinism
-
and self-help.
-
>> And Jesus doesn't want any of that. He
-
is looking for people that come to him
-
with desperation and hunger because then
-
the real work begins. I had this
-
revelation that I don't know if this
-
makes sense, but every inch of pride in
-
my life
-
is another year of delay for
-
transformation.
-
>> Amen.
-
One of my mentors, Bob Walsh. Love that
-
guy. He just keeps telling me, Phil, God
-
is always trying to get you to the end
-
of yourself.
-
I don't care how gifted you are, Phil. I
-
don't care how strong you are. I don't
-
care how educated you are. I don't care
-
how much money you got. I don't care who
-
you know. [snorts]
-
God is trying to get you to the end of
-
yourself. [clears throat]
-
>> The moment you get to the end of
-
yourself, transformation begins.
-
I remember points in my own struggle in
-
many areas of development in my life. I
-
had to come to a point where I had to be
-
on my knees say, "God, I
-
can't do it. There's there's no
-
learning. There's no wisdom that I could
-
I could have there's no one that can
-
help me. I'm absolutely broken apart
-
from this."
-
And I realized that those were the
-
secret moments of transformation where
-
the heavens began opening up wisdom
-
because I was ready to receive teaching.
-
Some of you guys here are not yet
-
transformed because you are not yet
-
desperate enough for transformation.
-
And God wants to give freedom,
-
but he wants a whole heart who holy
-
committed to him.
-
Demon could get the transformation he
-
needed because he was desperate. And the
-
question I ask you today is, are you
-
ready to work?
-
Are you ready to work? That's question
-
number one. Okay.
-
Question number two is, do you know why
-
you are the way you are? Do you know why
-
you are the way you are? So the
-
demoniac,
-
they tried to help him. They put chains
-
on him. They cast him to an island. But
-
I love Jesus. I love Jesus because in my
-
experience with him, he always goes to
-
the core issue.
-
He doesn't want to waste time dealing
-
with people's symptoms. He wants to go
-
right to the core. And I'm telling you
-
today that there's behaviors in your
-
life that are holding you back and are
-
killing your life that Jesus wants to go
-
deeper to the core.
-
The harder, the more stubborn the
-
behavior, the deeper you got to go
-
because there is something underneath us
-
that Jesus wants us to see for ourselves
-
and he wants to deal with
-
because the greater the depth, the
-
greater your deliverance. And if we
-
don't partner with Jesus in going deep,
-
we're going to miss out.
-
However, I realize that that sounds
-
great on paper, right?
-
But I realize that going deep is hard.
-
quarantine was really hard. As a as a
-
dude, I was going through this journey
-
of like my own recovery and my
-
therapists and my counselors and my
-
mentors were like, Phil, you got to
-
understand yourself. You got to go into
-
your feelings
-
[laughter]
-
and I said,
-
"What's that?"
-
[laughter]
-
Uh, one of the greatest practical things
-
that my counselor told me is like, Phil,
-
every morning, this is what I want you
-
to do. I want you to get up and I want
-
you to to journal multiple pages, just
-
whatever comes top of your head. And I
-
was like, that sounds crazy.
-
I don't want to do that. I don't want to
-
look at my thoughts there. That sounds
-
scary. But much to the encouragement,
-
[clears throat]
-
finally did it. Started journaling.
-
Started writing. And at first it's kind
-
of awkward and weird.
-
Uh, hey Jesus.
-
Uh, I ate a bagel today.
-
They just start like start talking about
-
random stuff, right? Just like, "Wow,
-
this journal sucks, you know, just just
-
saying random things." But then
-
something started happening.
-
Started getting curious. started talking
-
about like um you know something
-
happened at work yesterday and I felt
-
small
-
>> and I wonder if that has to do with how
-
I act when people don't encourage me
-
start God started growing my curiosity
-
about myself God started
-
inviting me to make connections started
-
inviting me to deeper and deeper places
-
in my own life matching behavior and he
-
started bringing me on deep healing
-
journey
-
healing memories,
-
healing stories that I played in my head
-
and it became this amazing process where
-
the Holy Spirit started really
-
transforming my life. And here's the
-
thing,
-
when I started doing that, I started
-
really my my relationship with God went
-
to like a whole another level. See, what
-
I learned is like it's so easy in
-
Christian faith to like stay at this
-
root level. Like it's so great to enjoy
-
worship, to come to church, smile. I'll
-
tell you right now, that's easy.
-
>> Okay. You know what's hard? What's
-
amazing? What God was inviting me to is
-
when you actually talk about your past
-
with God.
-
>> When you talk about your failures with
-
God, you talk about your deepest,
-
darkest, hardest things of why you do
-
what you do. I started, let me tell you
-
something. I started experiencing God's
-
presence in a way that I've never
-
experienced before. I realized that he
-
knew me to the very core. You see the
-
thing is God knows us to the very depth.
-
Okay? It's not that God doesn't know.
-
It's do do we know?
-
>> He's waiting for us. He's waiting for us
-
to know
-
>> because he what I love about God's
-
transformation, he doesn't force you to
-
change. He's waiting for partnership
-
with you to change.
-
>> And it requires us to go to another
-
level and at this level say yes Lord I
-
want to be transformed at this level.
-
And you go deeper. Yes, Lord. I want to
-
be transformed at this level. I don't
-
want surface level symptom treatment.
-
God, I want this. I want to heal my
-
parents beliefs. I want to hear heal all
-
the stories growing up. I want to heal
-
my wrong beliefs. And this is the depth
-
that is necessary in order to actually
-
see life transformation. See, Jesus when
-
he saw the demonic game, I wanted to go
-
to the actual root of the issue. And
-
that's what actually delivered.
-
I want to encourage you. You're here
-
today. You're afraid of death. He's
-
really gentle.
-
>> He's really gentle. There's never been a
-
moment where I've exposed something in
-
my life to God, but he didn't hold it
-
with such gentle hands.
-
And Psalm 18 says that word gent
-
has really been true in my life. The
-
deeper I went, the more gentle Jesus was
-
in transforming and bringing
-
transformation.
-
So the second question is, do you know
-
why you are the way you are? Do you know
-
why you
-
>> Okay. The third question is
-
why are you settling?
-
Why are you settling?
-
Um when the the morning I come to Jesus
-
I find the fas it's like fascinating in
-
terms of um his reaction which is don't
-
torment me. They're like really afraid.
-
You know the demons that control this
-
life are really afraid of Jesus. And I
-
can't I don't want to maybe pretend that
-
the demons that were on this man are the
-
same demons that afflict people in
-
addiction. But I can tell you that
-
they're very similar in two ways. Okay.
-
Number one, they're very similar in that
-
the demons are really afraid of Jesus.
-
They really know that he's lord of lord
-
and king of kings and judgment day is
-
time for
-
>> and that's good news for any of us feel
-
that they are oppressed and struggling
-
under spiritual oppression. Demons that
-
are afflicting your life, they're really
-
afraid of Jesus.
-
>> Really afraid of Jesus. And number two
-
is I can share I can share with
-
certainty that no matter the source of
-
the demons, no matter what their names
-
are, No matter how you got them, they
-
only have one job.
-
Their one job is to keep you away from
-
Jesus.
-
That's their one job. So when the the
-
the demon possessed man actually
-
confronts Jesus, they're afraid. You
-
know why? Cuz they're caught.
-
They're caught. They're like, "You
-
caught me in the act." And now that now
-
that he's here, they're afraid.
-
>> [clears throat]
-
>> all demons try to do especially um I do
-
sense that addiction behavior has a
-
spiritual comp component to it for
-
keeping us away from Jesus and
-
specifically
-
by offering us counterfeits in in his
-
place that's all demons do they offer us
-
counterfeits in his place
-
I said that a lot of addiction is a pain
-
response
-
and in in my experience people
-
experience pain
-
And it's so sad to me. There's a moment
-
in which I can almost imagine
-
when the enemy comes and offers
-
a substitute instead. He offers a
-
counterfeit. He says, he says, "This
-
will ease your pain. Try try this. This
-
will make you feel better." And we take
-
it
-
and it feels good going in, but it hurts
-
in our stomach. Our minds get hooked.
-
They offer counterfeits. These
-
counterfeits kill us. When I think about
-
the things that people are addicted to,
-
whether it's on your phone, whether it's
-
pornography, whe it's alcohol, whether
-
it's hard drugs,
-
at the end of the day, I know that the
-
devil is offered counterfeits of the
-
real thing.
-
This reminds me of something that
-
[cough and clears throat] quote [snorts]
-
I heard which is the man who rings the
-
doorbell at the brothel is unconsciously
-
looked for.
-
Even the worst of us when we reach for
-
that thing
-
that deep desire is actually good and
-
holy.
-
It's just that the expression is coming.
-
>> And that's why I believe that Jesus has
-
so much compassion on people because he
-
can see that the desires that God gave
-
us are good. Desires for peace, desires
-
for communion, desires for friendship,
-
desires for love, desires for worth,
-
desires for purpose. These are all good
-
and godly things that put in us. Except
-
the enemy comes and he intercepts those
-
good desires with counterfeits. You guys
-
understand? And we get hooked on the
-
counterfeits and the counterfeits bind
-
us because our minds get used to it and
-
they laugh at us because now we we're
-
we're settling for the counterfeits
-
instead of the real thing.
-
The real thing is himself.
-
How do you get out of counterfeits? I
-
want to share a funny story. Uh this one
-
time I was really infatuated with these
-
shoes.
-
Uh, they're really cool. Okay, these
-
shoes. These are just a mid. Um,
-
but I love these shoes. They look good
-
formally. They look good informally. And
-
they're really comfortable. Okay,
-
there's one problem.
-
That was really expensive.
-
And I was not about to pay that money
-
for that shoot. Okay. [clears throat]
-
But being the cheapo that I am,
-
[laughter]
-
>> let's go.
-
being the cheap that I can. I start
-
looking for the bootleg version.
-
[clears throat]
-
Okay.
-
So, I'm at the mall, right? I'm like
-
trying these things that kind of look
-
like it. You know, it's like, you know,
-
you ever look for counterfeit shoes?
-
Like, you want some Nikes, but you
-
settle for some Nikes.
-
It's like a backward look, like a
-
backward swish, [laughter]
-
you know? It's my cheap mind like the
-
mall. I was like, we're going to find
-
these bootleg shoes. And finally, I
-
found something that was like, you know,
-
like 50% of the way there. You ever like
-
compromised in your head like I can
-
settle for this? And I remember my wife
-
just shaking her head just like
-
just like embarrassed at me, you know?
-
And I was like I remember I was like I
-
think I want these 50% shoes.
-
And was like not spend money.
-
>> [laughter]
-
>> not spend money in that crap.
-
I was like, "All right, I'll save it for
-
the real thing." Fine. I'll save it for
-
the real thing. Well, a couple weeks
-
later, my good friend from Australia was
-
flying in from Australia
-
and I didn't think of anything of him
-
and he was staying at our house. He
-
comes and he's like, "Hello, Mike."
-
[laughter]
-
That's bad. I'm sorry.
-
Okay.
-
Anyway, he he we like prays and he's in
-
my house and he's opening up his
-
suitcase and much to my surprise, he
-
has this box of the shoe box
-
>> and he says, "Bel, I got this for you."
-
And it was a shoe. It was 100% handmade.
-
>> And it was the most expensive pair of
-
shoes I've ever had. And I put it on, I
-
was like,
-
That's the real thing. It was
-
comfortable. It's going to last a
-
generation. And
-
[laughter]
-
we'll see.
-
We'll see. We'll see. We'll see.
-
Um, and I was like, I was so grateful.
-
Like my heart was so moved. And you know
-
what's crazy? After that,
-
I stopped thinking about the counts.
-
>> I didn't think about it because when you
-
When you taste the real thing,
-
>> you become dissatisfied with the kind of
-
thing.
-
>> Too much. Too many of us with addictions
-
have been too satisfied with the
-
counterfeit.
-
How do you get out of the counterfeit?
-
You train yourself on the real.
-
You train yourself in the real. Okay.
-
Look, I know there's men here. I'm no
-
judgment if you're struggling with
-
pornography, okay? I just want to say
-
God made sex so amazing with a real
-
woman.
-
Sometimes like after Esther and I I just
-
lay here and I thank God.
-
Sorry, the kids are the kids gone. It's
-
not being recorded. That's [laughter]
-
I'm sorry. Stay here.
-
Oh, we're going to hear it afterwards.
-
Sorry.
-
>> But the truth is real. The real thing is
-
so good it makes counterfeits look
-
terrible.
-
>> They make they make it look as silly as
-
buying a shoe with a backward switch.
-
>> You see, God made the world and saw that
-
it was
-
>> good.
-
>> And everything that the devil wants to
-
get you to do is a counterfeit of the
-
real good thing that God says. So if
-
you're struggling here with some
-
addiction or some compulsive behavior,
-
I'm going to tell you right now, look
-
for what the good in God has created.
-
>> It could be as actually getting a
-
girlfriend. Okay? It could be actually
-
going out and joining the mountains,
-
joining an air. This world is beautiful.
-
God made it on purpose. Don't don't
-
settle for counterfeits. Settle for the
-
real thing. Once you train yourself in
-
the real, once you go, this is the real
-
deal. Do you know how easy you know how
-
easy it is to to confess.
-
>> See, most people think addiction is
-
running away from something, but if you
-
have something to run towards,
-
>> it's not even a game anymore.
-
>> Yeah. And Jesus is Jesus is the real
-
deal, guys.
-
>> I'm telling you, you're sitting here and
-
you go, "Man, I tried following God and
-
I haven't found it yet. That's tastes
-
better than the counterfeit." I'm going
-
to tell you right now, 100% guaranteed.
-
If that's your attitude, I'm going to
-
tell you right now that you have not
-
found a gift
-
>> because whatever God promises is good
-
and awesome. Every perfect gift gift
-
comes from the heavenly father's love.
-
>> That's the that's that's the awesome
-
part of being a Christian. It is not
-
boring. It is the most pleasurable and
-
awesome life.
-
>> Stop settling for count. Stop settling
-
for I got to keep this going. Ready?
-
Okay. Why are you settling? Okay, next
-
question.
-
Who are you when you're at your best?
-
Who are you when you're best? Okay, so
-
what what I love is Jesus is so he's so
-
amazing. He's such a great shepherd. He
-
asks, "What is your name?" Right to the
-
name, what is your name? And what's
-
interesting is I I thought about this.
-
Does Jesus ever ask anybody's name in
-
the scriptures? I was like, he doesn't.
-
You know, he knew Nathan before he saw
-
him in the fig tree. He knew what the
-
day that he would rise. Okay. And I
-
thought about I don't think he actually
-
needs to know his name. He's not asking
-
if he knows his name. He's asking if we
-
know our name.
-
>> Yeah.
-
We know.
-
There's a difference between lived
-
identity, named identity and lived
-
identity.
-
Because
-
Jesus doesn't want to talk about our
-
behavior. He wants to talk about our
-
identity
-
>> because he can correct your behavior but
-
it's what you think of yourself that
-
will actually result in what you do.
-
>> Every time Jesus wants to transform
-
somebody, he actually transforms them at
-
the core root level of who you
-
[clears throat] think they are. And
-
Jesus wants to transform them. I'm
-
telling you that any behavioral change
-
that you need to make today, Jesus
-
transform who you think you are
-
underneath
-
specifically. Now, this is really key
-
for people that are compulsive behavior.
-
Specifically, who you think you are when
-
you are at your worst.
-
>> I'm about to get real deep. You guys
-
ready?
-
>> Yeah.
-
>> So, when you're when I was at my worst,
-
you're sitting alone single in the dark
-
and I think I'm trash monster.
-
What's interesting is paying attention
-
to what the devil wants to call me.
-
Because whatever the devil wants to call
-
me in that moment, it's the identity
-
that's binding me to that behavior.
-
>> I realized that a lot of my behaviors
-
were tied to the sense of feeling
-
incompetent,
-
feeling not powerful, feeling worthless.
-
And I realized that if I kept believing
-
that I would continue this, there are so
-
many I see this out the world. There's
-
so many alcoholics that I run into when
-
you look the veneer a little bit
-
is this belief that I'm worthless,
-
that my life's not worth redeeming, that
-
I'm a nobody, nobody can help me. And
-
it's that underneath the veneer identity
-
that Jesus needs to change.
-
You won't climb out of that behavior
-
unless you climb out of that identity.
-
>> And as soon as you climb out of that
-
identity, the behaviors will change. Do
-
you want to know how to climb out of
-
that identity? You guys want to know
-
this? I I figured out the hack.
-
I did.
-
I figure out the You guys want to hear
-
the hack?
-
>> I realized
-
who the devil wanted to call me at my
-
worst
-
reveals who God sees at my best.
-
who the devil want to call me at my
-
worst on the other side of that lie
-
is who God sees me in my trust.
-
What I mean by that is
-
God wanted me to operate from a place of
-
worthlessness and I thought no at my
-
very best God sees me as worthy. He
-
loves me. He died for me. And that's the
-
identity that he wants me to operate on.
-
Devil wants to call me a nobody or my
-
darkness.
-
I'm famous in heaven.
-
I'm famous in heaven. You see, you want
-
to know the hack is figure out what the
-
devil wants to call you at your worst
-
and just call yourself the opposite.
-
Yep. There's a biblical truth there that
-
he wants he wants to hide from you. He
-
wants to obscure from you because he can
-
chain you at your worst and call you
-
names. you figure out what that name is,
-
you just laugh at him and go, "Well,
-
that just means I'm the opposite.
-
I know your game. I know your game. I
-
know your game." I'm going to call
-
myself the opposite because that's what
-
how heaven sees me. And when I start
-
declaring I'm a son of God, I have the
-
spirit of God. I have a spirit of
-
self-control.
-
>> I start actually declaring God's truth
-
over my life. And I start leaning the
-
power of what he says about me in my
-
darkest moments. I start living from
-
from the place of living at my best
-
identity. That's how God transforms us.
-
What is your name? Let me ask you this.
-
When you think about what your worst
-
behaviors are,
-
what is your name?
-
Who does the devil want to call you? And
-
who does God want to call you instead?
-
What is your name? All right. Last
-
question. Ready?
-
Do you believe you can be free?
-
Do you believe you can be free? This is
-
so key. You know what I love about this
-
passage? It's actually you. Okay, I show
-
the passage. He gets free, right? He
-
gets delivered and you remember what the
-
town does in response. It says they were
-
afraid.
-
Isn't that such a strange response?
-
Like, wouldn't you be like celebrating,
-
right? just be like it's just like kind
-
of a weird response, right? He's in his
-
right mind sitting there and his in his
-
hometown they were afraid and actually
-
want Jesus to leave.
-
You know what I realized the the enemy
-
of freedom is? This is like so key. You
-
know what the enemy of freedom is?
-
What
-
>> the enemy of freedom is normaly.
-
The enemy of freedom is sometimes
-
normaly. They were afraid because they
-
they were used to the man living in the
-
cave by himself.
-
>> Like they were used to it being in
-
chains. That's how we saw him every day.
-
And then when he was in his right mind,
-
they were afraid because like their
-
normaly was disrupted.
-
Sometimes in order to be free, we have
-
to disrupt normaly.
-
>> How do we get there? This this reminds
-
me of like how circus elephants are
-
trained. You know how circus elephants
-
are trained? It's really sad. They
-
capture the elephants, right? And they
-
put a big metal chain around their leg
-
and they chain that to a pole, like a
-
metal pole. And at first, elephant
-
fights, right? Even at their strength,
-
they fight, they tug, and they fight
-
with all their hearts. They said they
-
have to be free. And they pull, but they
-
can't break the metal chain. And they
-
can't break the metal pole.
-
Something happens over time. They start
-
giving up. They stop trying because they
-
start being resigned that this is
-
reality. And you know what's wild? I
-
don't know if you ever see this in the
-
pictures of circus. Elephants don't have
-
metal chains anymore. Instead, you ever
-
see this? It's just a string.
-
Ever see this? It's just a string. A
-
piece of string on the leg has a little
-
clumsy hole
-
which they can obviously break. And you
-
wonder why why don't they why don't they
-
break it and just go free
-
because the chain is no longer on their
-
leg. The chain is in their mind.
-
Know one of the most sad things about
-
addiction or compulsive behavior that
-
your mind is actually changed when you
-
actually don't actually believe that you
-
can be free.
-
In order for Jesus to actually bring us
-
to freedom, he must break that off our
-
minds.
-
>> Some of us are actually too addicted to
-
normaly that we can't embrace and
-
experience freedom.
-
Freedom should be something experienced.
-
In my transformation, I realized
-
in my resigned sense self, I said this
-
is normal. This is what guys do. This is
-
this is just what happens. And God
-
You're you're you're addicted to
-
normaly. You're addicted to status quo.
-
I want you to be addicted to the
-
impossible.
-
>> I want you to be addicted to freedom.
-
That's what I want you to be thinking
-
about. I want you to stop living from
-
this is normal to this is completely
-
impossible. This is where I want you to
-
live from Phil. And when you live from
-
this space,
-
>> your mind starts to change. You become
-
like that elephant that realizes there's
-
no longer a chain around him. He can
-
actually walk free. This is what needed
-
to
-
He actually needed to disrupt normaly.
-
Even the pressures of social around him
-
that says this is normal. This is good.
-
This is what we used to seeing. His
-
freedom journey required him to break
-
normaly.
-
In order to do that, we have to stop
-
feeding ourselves a normal status quo.
-
We have to feed our hearts on the
-
impossible. We have to feed our hearts
-
on the stories of God's goodness. We
-
have to feed our hearts on the testimony
-
of God's provision of God's doing
-
amazing things. You start feeding your
-
hearts the impossible. You move from a
-
place where you just accept normaly to
-
I'm going to live in the impossible
-
awesomeness of God.
-
Is there a string around your mind today
-
this morning?
-
This is a real question. Is there a
-
string around your mind?
-
There's no breakthrough that can happen
-
in your life unless you break that
-
story.
-
God is looking for
-
I want you to feed yourself impossible.
-
I'm going to ask my brother Cliff to
-
come up. Cliff,
-
he has an amazing Let's give a hand
-
[applause]
-
one of the lions in our church. He's so
-
amazing. He shared this amazing retreat
-
uh testimony at our men's retreat and
-
he's so gracious enough to share a
-
little bit of story from his own life.
-
So go for it. All right. Perfect. Yeah.
-
All right. I'm Clifford Ross. I'm an
-
alcoholic. Um that's a little jarring to
-
say in front of everybody considering AA
-
is anonymous. So everybody
-
um
-
>> I was a child of pain. And I think
-
that's where I mean Phil you touched on
-
everything and so as a therapist I think
-
you're going to agree with you 100%.
-
myself uh as an addict
-
you you have this pain and you you start
-
at such a young age and I was a product
-
of a of a sports in a military household
-
and that just shaped me into a sense of
-
normaly that made me believe that I
-
wasn't good enough or I had high highs
-
and low lows and that those couldn't be
-
accepted in modern day society. So what
-
inevitably ended up happening is I
-
started coping with that pain. Um
-
whether it was in sports or whether it
-
was in alcohol or weed or anything. And
-
inevitably I ended up choosing alcohol
-
as my vice. Um and growing up in the
-
Midwest, it was normal. I mean, I think
-
it was normal to drink three or four
-
times a week. It was normal to go to a
-
party school. It was normal just to be
-
engulfed in what was me alcoholism. And
-
so that normaly you you really never got
-
to break from it. Um and nor was I a
-
Christian. So I didn't really have that
-
those people in my life to say, "Hey,
-
what you're doing is wrong. You don't
-
know God.
-
Step this way." And so I think for me
-
it's
-
when you get an AA, you get a sobriety
-
date. It's called a birthday. Um and my
-
birthday is May 6, which means cod was a
-
great day.
-
four years ago. And but really what
-
happened is I became a Christian
-
[clears throat]
-
six years ago. So there was that
-
two-year gap where I was a Christian,
-
but yet I was still abusing alcohol. And
-
it wasn't so much of a of a physical
-
abuse. It was more so of I was abusing
-
it emotionally and mentally that I had
-
these really high highs and these really
-
low lows and I couldn't, you know what I
-
mean, understand them. And so therefore,
-
I turned to alcohol. Um, and the word
-
that like spoke to me was spiritual
-
progression and how like yes, I was in a
-
men's group like right off the bat and I
-
was reading the Bible, but yet I just
-
didn't know the Lord. Um, and inevitably
-
it became I was serving alcohol. Alcohol
-
was my God. Um, and that's you really
-
scary to say when it came down to it. I
-
was being a better engineer for alcohol
-
because if I was a great engineer, no
-
one knew I had a problem. Or I would be
-
in the gym because I looked, you know
-
what I mean, physically fit, but yet no
-
one knew I had a problem because
-
alcoholics don't look fit. Alcoholics
-
don't look fit. Um, and so I was hiding
-
who I was. I'm hiding this person behind
-
a closed door and I would have these
-
like reset days where I would like just
-
take a week a month of just high highs
-
and low lows and I would just be like
-
all right I'm going to have a reset day
-
and that is like I'm going to go to the
-
bar. I'm going to have a drink and it's
-
just going to reset everything. Um
-
[snorts] that was my god. Alcohol was my
-
god. It gave me that freedom from what I
-
was looking for. And I think what was so
-
scary in that is that yes, I was a
-
Christian and I saw these such powerful
-
people
-
just getting saved and healed and like
-
here I am being like, "All right, I'm in
-
the men's group. I'm reading the Bible.
-
Everything's good, but yet I am just so
-
lost." And so I think as spiritual
-
progression and James, I shared this on
-
Thursday, but like draw near to God as
-
he will draw near to you.
-
>> And so at the end of the day, it's like
-
if you put your both feet in and say,
-
I'm going to draw near to you, he's
-
going to draw uh near to us. And I think
-
>> yeah,
-
>> what like inevitably what I'm trying to
-
say is like you touched it on this is
-
like why are you settling? And I think
-
for me is the the price to change was
-
too costly.
-
And as I knew God and I knew Jesus, he
-
had already paid that price.
-
>> And so like no matter what that price
-
has been paid, he will lay down. He has
-
laid down his life. He will continue to
-
lay down his life. And that no matter
-
what you think is going to be like your
-
rock bottom, it will get worse. And I
-
mean that in the best way possible
-
because Jesus will search your heart and
-
not just be like, "Okay, alcohol is your
-
problem." He's going to search your
-
heart and then find everything else
-
inside of it. Because if you turn to
-
alcohol, what you were saying, that's
-
one. But then you get rid of alcohol,
-
he's going to the devil's going to find
-
another one. And you're going to go down
-
that list, whether it's your phone,
-
weed, alcohol, just anything. The devil
-
does not want you to get close to him.
-
So, he's going to try every single thing
-
in his power to keep you away. So, Jesus
-
is going to search your heart. You're
-
going to go down that list. It's going
-
to get real dark, but then you're just
-
going to walk in a light. And I think
-
for me, it's like when you walk in that
-
light, and I have been for at least four
-
years, for sure. Four years, hopefully a
-
little bit longer. But it was funny on
-
Thursday. It's like when you walk every
-
day, you forget the transformation
-
>> just because you, you know what I mean?
-
day over day over day over day you see
-
that 1% and I didn't it's funny my
-
Instagram has photos of me like as an
-
alcoholic
-
>> and I showed Jeremiah the photo of me
-
and he's like you look completely
-
different and so for me it was nice to
-
hear that like I feel it in my heart but
-
like physically I also feel different so
-
I think what I just want to end on and
-
what Phil touched so like incredibly on
-
is that like
-
put both feet in to like today's the
-
day. Put both feet in. It's going to get
-
a little scary. Buckle your seat belt
-
and just hold on because at the end of
-
the day, knowing the Lord, knowing who
-
he is, allowing him to get clo the
-
pursuit of holiness is the closest of
-
the Lord in your heart. So if you pursue
-
him, he will find you because he already
-
knows you. So just let him
-
>> let him into your heart. So thank you
-
[applause]
-
>> [applause]
-
>> the worship comes.
-
Are you [clears throat] ready?
-
Do you know why you are the way you are?
-
Why are you so
-
who are you?
-
Do you believe in
-
I can't help but wonder if I was asking
-
you one of these questions.
-
Let's Can we stand and
-
Do this.
