  1. Hey, my name is Genesis. We are so glad

  2. you decided to tune in with us,

  19. let's enjoy this message together.

  20. when you came in, hopefully you received

  21. one of the uh love cards. Look at that.

  22. We're giving out love today. Uh one of

  23. the love cards. Uh we have been in this

  24. series called divine interruption

  25. talking about the advent of Christ, him

  26. coming into this earth. And then week

  27. number one, we addressed what part of

  28. Advent?

  29. >> Hope. Okay, very good. That's three of

  30. you. It made radical impact. I can see

  31. that. Hope was week one. Week number two

  32. was peace. Oh, I heard a little bit more

  33. peace. There you go. I had some peace on

  34. week number two. Week number three was

  35. >> joy. Joy to the world. And that today is

  36. love. Right. Um these are this is a part

  37. of the advent building anticipation

  38. looking to what Christ was going to

  39. deliver to this earth. And that's what

  40. we're celebrating. But on the back of

  41. these brief little thoughts and

  42. devotionals to get us through up to and

  43. through Christmas, all focusing on what

  44. Jesus did for our life, we're going to

  45. continue that today as we talk about

  46. this love. Last night, Cindy and I went

  47. over and we were watching Malachi and

  48. Tia. That's our grandkids. And uh we

  49. were hanging out with them, having a

  50. great time. We have so much more fun

  51. when uh Caleb and Elizabeth are not

  52. there. And so we kind of kick them out.

  53. And that means the refrigerator is open.

  54. Eat what you want. Let's go. And and uh

  55. so we have a we have Yeah. Well, there

  56. you go. And so we have a we have a good

  57. time. But but last night uh Cindy had

  58. Tia and had given her a bath, getting

  59. ready to put her put her to bed. And so

  60. Malachi comes to me, goes, "Saba, will

  61. you play with me?

  62. Do I have have an option after you ask

  63. that kind of question? Of course I

  64. will." So we're in the floor. And so he

  65. wanted to put together his nativity set

  66. because baby Jesus is coming. That's

  67. right. Let's do it. So he brings and he

  68. dumps out all of his nativity set pieces

  69. and um and we we have the the three

  70. kings, the three wise men. Uh we we had

  71. the three wise men put there and and

  72. then we had then we had um we had the

  73. camel and then we had the donkey and we

  74. had uh Mary, we had uh uh Jesus's mother

  75. and we had the the the the uh the manger

  76. and the hay and we had the the the the

  77. little little place where he was born. I

  78. guess it was like a little barn, little

  79. stall thing. We just couldn't find Jesus

  80. anywhere.

  81. We We not only could we not find Jesus,

  82. we couldn't find Jesus's daddy. Like

  83. Like Jesus and his daddy were missing.

  84. Like we filed missing personal report.

  85. Like they're both gone. Like can you

  86. even have a nativity without Jesus and

  87. without his daddy in the room? And well,

  88. we we had we had a crisis. So what did

  89. we do? We went on a search and rescue

  90. mission. We were going through the

  91. house. We were going through toy boxes.

  92. We were going through looking under the

  93. bed. Malachi was buried. I digging him

  94. out. And I mean, we were on our hands

  95. and knees pulling toys out everywhere.

  96. We never found Jesus and his daddy. So,

  97. if you ever if you all see Jesus and his

  98. daddy around, we're looking for him. All

  99. right, that's kind of kind of where we

  100. left it. The search and res rescue. We

  101. were trying to find him. Search and

  102. rescue. I'm when I think search and

  103. rescue, my my immediate mind goes to the

  104. guys like like the Navy Seals who like

  105. go in and cover ups overnight, right?

  106. And and they're extracting people in the

  107. middle of the night with night vision.

  108. Okay, maybe it's my little uh delusions

  109. of grandeur that I think I can still do

  110. it. Okay, maybe not. But but but you got

  111. the Navy Seals on search and rescue,

  112. very calculated and precise. I I I'm

  113. grateful for the first responders in

  114. Pulk County who run into burning

  115. buildings.

  116. >> Yes, sir. Can you be thankful for first

  117. responders? Yeah, there we go. That's

  118. right. That's right. Who people who

  119. respond in difficult times? They they

  120. show up in those moments rescuing people

  121. out of situations that they don't want

  122. to be in right now. I'm I'm I'm grateful

  123. for that. Jesus himself

  124. came to earth on a search and rescue

  125. mission. That's that's literally what he

  126. did. His was different. His His was

  127. driven by love. It's it's crazy. We he

  128. we the people that he came to rescue

  129. didn't know they needed to be rescued.

  130. And he comes with this mission driven by

  131. love in order to turn situations around

  132. in their life. But but this mission,

  133. this love that he drove with, it's

  134. crazy. It was reckless. It was selfless.

  135. It was illogical. It was this

  136. gracefilled pursuit of humanity. And he

  137. broke every social and religious

  138. boundary in order to reach people like

  139. you and people like me.

  140. >> How many you know you all are a mess?

  141. >> The preachers. How many you know I'm a

  142. mess?

  143. >> Yes.

  144. >> I figured the front row would answer

  145. pretty strong right there. Yeah. Yeah.

  146. Well, they're right. THEY'RE RIGHT.

  147. WE'RE ALL A MESS

  148. >> AND HE came for us. Now, now let me just

  149. help you. I'm I'm not trying to mess

  150. with your with your nice little tucked

  151. in package just pristine view of the

  152. nativity. Go ahead and keep that for a

  153. little bit. But we do need some reality.

  154. We need some reality added to our little

  155. romantic sense of Christmas. We need to

  156. we need to put it back into real terms

  157. so that it's not just that far away

  158. thing that really doesn't have any

  159. impact. It doesn't mean anything to us

  160. at all because it's just this removed

  161. like a fable. It's just a myth. No, no,

  162. no. We need to ground it and bring it a

  163. little bit closer to our life because I

  164. want you to hear me today.

  165. Jesus was living a death warrant from

  166. the time he was born.

  167. He was born with death in mind. He

  168. wasn't here to hang out and enjoy the

  169. life like you and I are. He was here

  170. living with an intentional date to die

  171. because until unless he died and

  172. resurrected, his birth changed

  173. absolutely nothing. That's what that's

  174. why we celebrate. When we celebrate his

  175. birth, we have to equally celebrate what

  176. he did in the end. That's what makes it

  177. real. Because that manger that we

  178. celebrate and it's your nativity at your

  179. house or wherever you see the pictures,

  180. there's more than just a baby, more than

  181. an infant laying in that manger. That is

  182. a warrior on a messy suicide mission to

  183. save the world. This is the reality.

  184. It's not this nice pristine put together

  185. little holiday that we get to jump into.

  186. We are celebrating the fact that a a

  187. child was born in order to die a heinous

  188. life and lived rough from the time he

  189. was born all the way through to that

  190. moment. That cradle was actually the

  191. beast head. It was an insertion point

  192. for this tactical assault that heaven

  193. pulled on sin and chaos. It came through

  194. Jesus to get it done. And that's why

  195. we're here celebrating this today. Luke

  196. 2:es 10 and 11 speak to this on on how

  197. it was announced. Listen to what it

  198. says. The angel said to them, talking to

  199. the shepherds, "Do not be afraid. I

  200. bring you good news that will cause

  201. great joy for all the people." Read

  202. this. Today in the town of David, a

  203. savior has been born to you. He is the

  204. Messiah, the Lord.

  205. In Jesus's day, whenever he was born,

  206. the the word savior had a broader

  207. meaning than what you and I think about

  208. it. We think about being made

  209. spiritually right with God. And it it

  210. could include that, but it was even

  211. broader because in Jesus's day, emperors

  212. would also use that term. I am the

  213. savior of this region. I'm the savior of

  214. this domain. Meaning, I'm bringing peace

  215. and security to all the citizens. That's

  216. who I am. my authority and my rulership

  217. does that for you. I am the savior of

  218. this arena. So this this kind of moves

  219. this concept of savior kind of out of

  220. the clouds and brings it down to the

  221. streets for you and I to to relate a

  222. little bit more. While Jesus did come

  223. without a doubt to bring us alive in a

  224. relationship with God, he also came to

  225. this earth in order to impact how we can

  226. live and move and enjoy and function in

  227. life right here. Is anybody glad that he

  228. didn't just come to get you right there?

  229. He came to get you right everywhere.

  230. This is this is really good news. This

  231. is really really good news. The Bible

  232. says he's called savior. Savior was a

  233. deliverer or someone who preserved. He's

  234. also called messiah or the Christ. That

  235. means one who was marked by God.

  236. He's also called Lord. Lord means master

  237. or the decision maker. In other words,

  238. the angel came appearing and declaring

  239. that he's a deliverer and a preserver

  240. who was marked by God to master and make

  241. decisions over your life. That's who he

  242. is. He's not just fire insurance to get

  243. you into eternity. He's not trying to

  244. just save you from hell. No, he's trying

  245. to get all the hell out of your life.

  246. Not just at the end of time, but here

  247. right now. I want some heaven where you

  248. are. Jesus came to do that. You see, a

  249. savior. He's a savior for the sick and

  250. with the grieving. He's a savior for the

  251. those with an empty bank account. He is

  252. a savior for the 3:00 a.m. panic attack.

  253. He He is a savior for those who feel

  254. like they're lost and nobody cares. He

  255. is He's a present help in those moments.

  256. He is a savior who is with you right

  257. here, right now. That's why he is called

  258. Emmanuel,

  259. God with us. Not just God for you, God

  260. with you.

  261. >> That matters on many levels. You see,

  262. it's this it's this reckless, selfless

  263. love of God that that refused to stay in

  264. heaven while you and I were struggling

  265. on the deep end of the pool. Cuz life

  266. does not work without him. I don't care

  267. how good you are, how much money you

  268. got, how many followers you have on

  269. social media. Without Jesus, you're

  270. flopping. You're you're you're you're

  271. not living the life that you could live

  272. once you surrender it to Jesus. And I

  273. want to talk to you today about that

  274. Christmas love that Jesus brought with

  275. him. Because before he brought it, it

  276. didn't exist.

  277. In fact, I would go so far as to tell

  278. you this. Even if you have rejected and

  279. said no to Jesus, he has still impacted

  280. your life with his love in ways that you

  281. don't see or don't even understand. None

  282. of us have the ability to divorce oursel

  283. from the impact of his love. That's how

  284. broadreaching and how deep his love has

  285. been that has affected our world. But

  286. here's how I would describe it. His love

  287. was reckless and unorthodox.

  288. In other words, let me put it this way.

  289. He didn't wait for you and I to get

  290. ourselves together before he decided to

  291. love us. How many you know that if if he

  292. was waiting on that, he probably still

  293. would not love us right now.

  294. >> Would you turn to someone, tell them, "I

  295. know you're a mess." Ju just tell them,

  296. "I know you're a mess. I I I I got a

  297. hard time loving you myself right now.

  298. Like you you are a mess.

  299. >> That his his love is reckless. And I

  300. don't mean I don't mean reckless in

  301. meaning in in being careless, but I mean

  302. reckless in absolutely disregarding his

  303. own safety and his own reputation in

  304. order to connect with you and I

  305. understand. Ladies and gentlemen, God in

  306. heaven comes to earth, wraps himself in

  307. flesh, and submits himself to things you

  308. and I go through. That's reckless love.

  309. That doesn't make sense. Luke 15, Jesus

  310. gives us the parable of the shepherd

  311. who's watching this flock of sheep. And

  312. 99 of them are all together, but there

  313. is that one boneheaded sheep.

  314. Thank you.

  315. There's that. That's the best response

  316. I've had all day. That's the best. Amen.

  317. There's that one boneheaded sheep that

  318. keeps WANDERING OFF. LOOK, THE WHOLE

  319. BRO, THE WHOLE GROUP IS THIS WAY. HOW DO

  320. YOU KEEP ending up lost by yourself? And

  321. then you raise your head. Where'd

  322. everybody go? Oh my lord. We have an

  323. issue on aisle three right now. Are you

  324. serious? And the Bible says Jesus as the

  325. great shepherd leaves the 99 to go find

  326. the one. Y'all, that is a non no in

  327. first century culture. No shepherd in

  328. their right mind would leave all 99 to

  329. go find one. That's what was so

  330. controversial about this sweet little

  331. parable. It caused problems.

  332. They're like, "You're going to you're

  333. going to leave all them to go find him?"

  334. And Jesus said, "That's exactly what I'm

  335. going to do. That's exactly why I'm

  336. here. That's exactly why I'm called."

  337. Because Jesus is saying, "I'm here to

  338. prioritize the individual over the

  339. institution.

  340. >> I care about the one.

  341. I care about the one that you all have

  342. forgotten about. I care about the one

  343. who's missing, but you're partying so

  344. hard you could didn't even know they

  345. weren't here. I'm looking for that one."

  346. How do you miss one out of a hundred

  347. when they all look the same,

  348. >> act the same, eat the same? You must

  349. have been looking individually, not just

  350. corporately. And that's what he does.

  351. That's exactly what he what his heart

  352. is. And here's what amazes me. The one

  353. that he goes to rescue,

  354. it's probably not the first time he

  355. rescued that one,

  356. >> right?

  357. >> Cuz he's so boneheaded. He's done it

  358. again and again and again. And can

  359. anybody say I can I can relate with that

  360. sheep right there? Like I I I am that

  361. boneheaded sheep that keeps disappearing

  362. and he's like, "Where are you? Come

  363. here." And he gets us back and we're

  364. like, "Oh, thank you so much. Thank you

  365. so much." And two days later

  366. and we all out there again doing

  367. foolishness and he got to go rescue us

  368. all over again. That's exactly what the

  369. heart of this shepherd is. In fact, the

  370. religious beat Jesus up. They called him

  371. a friend of sinners because he was

  372. hanging with the wrong people. Messy and

  373. unorthodox. you as a rabbi don't hang

  374. with people like that. Tax collectors

  375. and sinners and people who get drunk.

  376. What is wrong with you? But Jesus was

  377. breaking all of those man-made holy

  378. rules so that he could get some holiness

  379. to broken people. Ladies and gentlemen,

  380. I'm so glad that we serve a God that is

  381. not waiting on you and I to get good

  382. with him before he can do something for

  383. us. But he says, "I'll love you right

  384. where you are. Bring your stuff. Bring

  385. your issues. Bring your failures. Bring

  386. your mess. Bring your brokenness. Bring

  387. your crazy ideas. Bring your pride.

  388. Bring the addiction. Bring the failure.

  389. Bring it. Bring your reputation. Bring

  390. it all. We're good. I've got you just

  391. like you are. If you could if you if if

  392. you could clean yourself up, you would

  393. have done so by now. It's proof that you

  394. need Jesus. You and I can't fix oursel.

  395. I need him in my life. That's what Jesus

  396. is telling us. It's why we come to him.

  397. Because I can't and he can. You see,

  398. human logic tells us this. Only invest

  399. your best resources in that that's going

  400. to give a good return to you.

  401. >> Right. Right.

  402. >> That's that's called wisdom. Right. You

  403. don't put your money in an account

  404. that's dying.

  405. >> No. With emotionally in your energy in

  406. relationships, in your friendships. If

  407. you keep giving and giving, if they keep

  408. taking and taking and it's depleting

  409. you, you're like, "Back up. Time out.

  410. I'm out. See you." And and we back up.

  411. That's how we look at it. We think in

  412. this term, love those who will love you

  413. back. You love me back. You got it. You

  414. got it. That that that's how we roll.

  415. But but the love of Jesus is way beyond

  416. anything we can conceptualize or mimic.

  417. And I want to talk to you about that

  418. love. His love is supernatural. That

  419. means evolution, psychology, biology,

  420. it's all going to fail. It can't explain

  421. it because it comes from a source that

  422. is outside of nature. You can't study it

  423. because it can't be held and it's

  424. greater than what can fit inside the

  425. human mind. Because our love, our human

  426. life love, it has a breaking point.

  427. >> In other words, put it this way. We love

  428. until it hurts too much and then I stop

  429. loving.

  430. >> I'm going to love you. Love you. Love

  431. you. Ouch. Love you. Love you. Ouch.

  432. Love you. Kiss my grits. I'm out.

  433. We bounce. I'll give you some time, but

  434. then I'm I'm I'm not hanging out for

  435. that. I'm going to hang until their mess

  436. starts to threaten my peace. And the

  437. moment you start costing me my then then

  438. you know what? I got a jet. And there's

  439. something good about healthy boundaries

  440. in our life. I'm not mad at that. But

  441. but our world, it operates in this

  442. mindset. You got to earn stuff if you're

  443. going to get stuff back. We call it

  444. karma. Karma. K A R M A. Karma. It's

  445. it's the karma. In other words, you get

  446. what you deserve. Something bad happens

  447. to you, someone shout karma. You had it

  448. coming.

  449. >> That that that's how we think. That's

  450. how our world operates. Jesus came to

  451. crash your karma, baby, is what I'm

  452. trying to tell you. And to give you a

  453. life you don't deserve, to take away

  454. what you do deserve, pour his love into

  455. your life and rebuild you and give you a

  456. brand new start. Ain't nobody doing that

  457. for you except for Jesus in your life.

  458. Jesus came to crash your karma.

  459. His love is is unhuman. It doesn't have

  460. a kill switch.

  461. It doesn't override and then done. It it

  462. it doesn't work that way. He doesn't

  463. have the human reflex to quit.

  464. That's crazy to me. Reject him, he's

  465. there. Push back, he's there. Flip him

  466. off, he's there. Curse him, he's there.

  467. At a party,

  468. he's there. You ever had Jesus mess up a

  469. party?

  470. Like you ever been somewhere that you

  471. knew you shouldn't have been doing

  472. something you knew you shouldn't have

  473. done and you trying to enjoy yourself

  474. because you thought it was going to be

  475. fun and you get there and you got your

  476. little thing. You got your little

  477. umbrella in it. You got it all going on.

  478. The music is bouncing and you're trying

  479. to do your thing and you hear Jesus back

  480. here going, "We need to get out of here

  481. right now. What? Who? Who invited you?

  482. What in the world?" And and you're just

  483. trying to go but but he that that love

  484. that love is just haunting. It's it's

  485. that hound dog from heaven who's just a

  486. he he's after you. He you cannot push

  487. him away. You can't get him off of you.

  488. HE'S ALWAYS THERE. That's exactly who he

  489. is. He doesn't run from our mess. He

  490. runs into the infection. He runs into

  491. the chaos. He runs into the burning down

  492. uh home and family and life that we're

  493. living in. And and and even the kill

  494. switch of death couldn't shut him down

  495. because he bounced back from that to

  496. keep showing I love you and I'm here.

  497. And if I can raise up myself, I can

  498. raise your life back UP AS WELL. GIVE ME

  499. A chance to heal and put you BACK

  500. TOGETHER AGAIN. THAT THIS IS WHAT I

  501. DON'T WANT YOU to miss the reality of

  502. this Christmas. Don't let it be so

  503. social and COMMERCIAL THAT WE MISS THE

  504. DEPTH, THE POWER, AND THE VALUE of what

  505. happened because that sweet little baby

  506. boy was born with the love that required

  507. the heart of a warrior. And if you're

  508. not careful, you and I will continue to

  509. see him as a baby for the rest of his

  510. life. He came as a baby. But ladies and

  511. gentlemen, I got good news. He grew up.

  512. And his mission was on full effect to

  513. reach for you and to reach for me and to

  514. violate all social conscience to let you

  515. know I'm fighting for you. I'm fighting

  516. to pull you in. Others are fighting to

  517. push you away, BUT I'M AFTER YOU. I see

  518. you as worthy. I'm leaving the crowd to

  519. come find you. I'll chase you into the

  520. party to talk to you and remind you that

  521. I love you and there's a life better

  522. than this. You don't have to live this

  523. way. I came to lift you. I'm not

  524. throwing elbows. The church did that.

  525. Religion did that. I didn't throw elbows

  526. on you. I love you right where you are.

  527. Give me a chance to hug the hell out of

  528. your life and let's rebuild this thing.

  529. That's exactly who he is.

  530. This love is scandalous.

  531. It insults our idea of fairness.

  532. You ever had somebody on your list that

  533. you thought God ought to just slap them

  534. one good time?

  535. >> You put them on your naughty list.

  536. >> Oh, you better watch out. Better not

  537. cry.

  538. I got a naughty list. The only problem

  539. with that is when I tell God about my

  540. naughtiness, he goes, "Yeah, and I got

  541. your name on mine."

  542. >> Because if we're going to talk naughty,

  543. >> would you tell someone tell you that

  544. pastor was just talking about you? Just

  545. just go ahead and just just pass that

  546. on. Don't take that. Just pass it on. He

  547. was just talking to you right now. We

  548. all got jacked up areas of our life. We

  549. all got issues where we struggle. And

  550. the moment I'm pointing out somebody

  551. else's, he's reminding me, Scott, YOU

  552. GOT NO ROOM TO JUDGE. THERE'S STUFF

  553. THAT'S OUT OF ORDER. I I'm I'm not into

  554. fairness. Do you understand? JESUS WAS

  555. TALKING TO THE GUY WHO WAS CRUCIFIED,

  556. THE THIEF RIGHT BESIDE HIM. AND IN THE

  557. CLOSING MOMENTS, THE LAST FEW BREATHS OF

  558. THIS THIEF'S LIFE, JESUS SAID, "TODAY

  559. you're going to be with me IN HEAVEN."

  560. WHAT? He didn't get THE CHANCE TO GET

  561. BAPTIZED. He never been to church. He

  562. never sang A WORSHIP SONG. WHAT'S HE

  563. going to heaven for? Because whenever

  564. somebody reaches for Jesus and embraces

  565. him, Jesus has always been reaching for

  566. him. even when dying in the closing

  567. moments OF YOUR LIFE. THAT'S HOW

  568. hardreaching the love of Jesus is for

  569. us. Ladies and gentlemen, do not make

  570. this cute and candy canesish. This is

  571. serious stuff that changed all of our

  572. life. Jesus, he violates our sense of

  573. justice with his love, his grace, and

  574. his mercy. It's illogical.

  575. It's it's absolutely it mess with your

  576. head because the love of Jesus doesn't

  577. care about the math of life.

  578. Math doesn't math when it comes to him.

  579. Like you can't add it up. Okay, karma

  580. and they deserve this. Oh, this is why.

  581. No, it just doesn't work because Jesus

  582. spends everything on a bad investment.

  583. I'm not a good investment.

  584. He has no hope of a good return with me.

  585. But he risked it all and extended his

  586. grace for me so that as I get to know

  587. him, I'll keep getting up and moving

  588. towards him. But I have nothing perfect

  589. to give him.

  590. >> This is all of us in this room here. His

  591. His love is rebellious. His love is

  592. relentless.

  593. He rejects your no as an answer.

  594. You need me. I don't want you. Okay, I'm

  595. still here.

  596. Get out of my face. No, I'll be behind

  597. you. I'm going to be in your head when

  598. you lay down to sleep at night. I'm

  599. going to talk to you cuz I love you like

  600. that. I'm not letting you go. You're

  601. fearfully and wonderfully made. My My

  602. fingerprints are all over your life. You

  603. were made for more than how you're

  604. thinking right now. I want to elevate

  605. your life. And I know you keep pushing

  606. back thinking you got it all together.

  607. Okay, you go, boo. But I'm just telling

  608. you, there's a better life on the way.

  609. Let me do this for you. He's He's

  610. relentless. We we we get upset. We build

  611. walls.

  612. Jesus, he builds bridges. He keeps

  613. coming after us. He doesn't play by our

  614. rules. And he doesn't use our social

  615. debt that we apply to other people. That

  616. love is real. His It's extravagant. And

  617. quite honestly, it looks wasteful. He

  618. expends too much. He gives more than

  619. seems necessary for the rescue. But he

  620. comes after us that way. Philippians 2:7

    Philippians 2:7

  621. has a p is a powerful verse. And I want

  622. you to read the first three words loud

  623. and proud. Are you ready? Here we go.

  624. >> He emptied himself. All right, I need

  625. you to read with the outside voice.

  626. Ready? 1 2 3. He emptied himself by

  627. taking on the form of a servant by

  628. becoming like other humans by having a

  629. human experience.

  630. Jesus poured out everything

  631. that he was. He poured all of it. He was

  632. God, divinity. And that's the that's the

  633. the the the difficulty that we struggle

  634. with. 100% man, 100% God at the same

  635. time, but he's he submitted himself to

  636. getting cut, to getting stung by a bee,

  637. to having his heart broken, to being

  638. rejected, it hurt, and all those. He

  639. submitted himself to that so that his

  640. creation had the ability to actually

  641. cause the creator pain. He submitted to

  642. that right there so that we would have

  643. everything that we need and have nothing

  644. that we deserve.

  645. >> This is why he did what he did. He

  646. emptied himself. First John 4:9 puts it

    1 John 4:9

  647. this way. Read this with me. God showed

  648. how much he loved us by sending his one

  649. and only son into the world so that we

  650. might have eternal life through him.

  651. He showed us how much he loved us. The

  652. word love there is a very specific word

  653. in the original language. There's

  654. there's four or five different words for

  655. love that could have been chosen for

  656. that verse. One specific word was

  657. chosen. Uh one option is stgos in the

  658. Greek and it means the love of like a

  659. parent to a child. That's a pretty

  660. strong love right there. Pretty strong.

  661. But he said, "No, go around that one."

  662. Well, there's another one called aeros.

  663. Aeros is like when a a husband and wife

  664. are in that are coming together

  665. intimately and sharing that love. And he

  666. goes, "Yeah, but that that that's no

  667. something much stronger than that."

  668. Okay. Well, there's another word called

  669. filio. Filelio is a brotherly love.

  670. That's where we get Philadelphia from.

  671. Fil. Yeah. But and and as as great as

  672. that is, doesn't do it. So, which word

  673. are we using here in this in this

  674. capacity? The word that is chosen to

  675. identify the love of God towards you is

  676. called agape.

  677. Agape love is different. It means

  678. unconditional.

  679. It is reckless. It is unearned. It is

  680. illogical. And it's sacrificial.

  681. It cannot be stopped.

  682. It is unending.

  683. He

  684. loves you with an unconditional,

  685. reckless, unearned, illogical,

  686. sacrificial

  687. love. You've never been loved like that.

  688. You have never in your life encountered

  689. anybody that loved you like that.

  690. Nobody.

  691. He did.

  692. And that's why we sit here today in this

  693. place of celebration and gratitude. And

  694. he does this agape love. It acts out

  695. regardless of the worthiness of the

  696. object because we can't be worthy enough

  697. to deserve agape.

  698. It it it it messes with your mind

  699. because it's beyond what is even humanly

  700. understandable. But this is what the

  701. Bible lays out that he is that his love

  702. is three things. Number one,

  703. sacrificial, unconditional, and

  704. transformational. Everyone says

  705. sacrificial

  706. >> sacrificial

  707. >> unconditional

  708. >> transformational

  709. In 2005,

  710. there was a man named Kevin

  711. who reached the point of his life that

  712. he was done.

  713. Had a lot of pressure going on. He was

  714. dealing with major depression already.

  715. Had a baby on the way in the house. They

  716. were dealing with major major financial

  717. pressure. And he just reached his

  718. boiling point. It's a true story.

  719. and he climbed the railing of the Golden

  720. Gate Bridge,

  721. stepped out over onto that 4-in pipe,

  722. looking 220 ft down to the water, and

  723. decided, "This is where I'm I'm done.

  724. Life is over. I can't take this anymore.

  725. It's it's beyond my capacity to deal

  726. with."

  727. There's a man named Kevin Briggs. He's a

  728. California Highway Patrol officer, and

  729. he is known he was known then as the

  730. guardian of the Golden Gate.

  731. Officer Briggs was was regularly called

  732. to situations where somebody was going

  733. to take their life at the Golden Gate

  734. Bridge and he was called in to try to

  735. handle the situation.

  736. History tells us that as Kevin was on

  737. the edge and Officer Briggs gets there,

  738. he approached he approached Kevin not

  739. with authority and and and with with

  740. with this I've got it together and let

  741. me let me strongarm you down. They say

  742. that officer Briggs, he approached. In

  743. fact, this was Kevin's report. He he he

  744. walks up to the edge and he leans out

  745. across the edge out there matching where

  746. Kevin is where they could feel the wind

  747. blowing and they were actually he was

  748. putting himself almost in a very

  749. vulnerable spot as well. Far enough from

  750. Kevin that Kevin didn't have to worry

  751. about it, but close enough that they

  752. were they could talk. And and and Kevin

  753. talked about he didn't he didn't come to

  754. try to fix me or correct me. He just

  755. came with his presence.

  756. He was there. He was available. He

  757. didn't lecture me. Kevin goes on to say,

  758. he didn't he didn't give me reasons why

  759. I shouldn't do this or why I should do

  760. that. For 92 minutes, the officer just

  761. leaned over that rail and they endured

  762. that wind whipping past them as they

  763. just sat there. And Officer Briggs just

  764. let Kevin talk and pour out his heart.

  765. He was just simply listening.

  766. He didn't use force.

  767. He didn't give him answers. He didn't

  768. write him a check. There was nothing

  769. circumstantial that changed in Kevin's

  770. life. But what Kevin said did change is

  771. I felt heard.

  772. Someone cared enough that they were

  773. there. And after 92 minutes of their

  774. meeting in the middle of that darkness,

  775. that dangerous spot, Kevin climbed back

  776. over the railing to come on this side.

  777. And when asked, "Why is it, Kevin, what

  778. what made you come back?" Here's what he

  779. said. Someone chose to stand in the wind

  780. with me.

  781. I wasn't in it alone.

  782. History goes on to tell us these two

  783. guys did not see each other for another

  784. eight years. It wasn't until 2013 that

  785. they met up again. And the reason they

  786. met up the second time is because Kevin

  787. was now a suicide prevention advocate.

  788. He began to stand up and help others

  789. that were going through the situation he

  790. was and actually invited Officer Briggs

  791. to come because he wanted to give him a

  792. an award for saving his life. And now he

  793. was able to pass it on and save

  794. countless other lives. And when they

  795. brought them back together, here's what

  796. Kevin said. You gave me the one thing I

  797. didn't think I deserved and that was

  798. your time.

  799. I couldn't I Nobody was listening. I

  800. felt alone. But you moved into my

  801. darkness and you moved into my

  802. loneliness and you stopped and you

  803. listened.

  804. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to remind

  805. you this gives a good picture as to what

  806. the Christmas story is all about. This

  807. is God leaning into our broken, windy,

  808. dangerous world. When you and I have

  809. lost hope and we see no way out. We've

  810. got issues mounting all around us.

  811. Circumstances we don't know how to fix

  812. and we think we have reached the edge.

  813. And Jesus walks in and he leans into our

  814. darkness. And he didn't stay for 92

  815. minutes. He stayed for 33 and 1/2 years

  816. as he leaned into us to get to know us

  817. and to feel our pain and put his

  818. presence in our life so that we could

  819. realize he's not here throwing elbows

  820. and just trying to fix me or correct me,

  821. but he actually cares and he's got a

  822. plan that can rebuild and restore my

  823. life. You see, the goal was not to keep

  824. Kevin alive. The goal that that that was

  825. important, but the but the goal was

  826. actually to restore him back to his

  827. family and to his purpose. Let him see

  828. beyond his present situation. That's

  829. what the officer did and that's what

  830. Jesus does in our life. His love is

  831. sacrificial because he shows up in our

  832. dark place. He doesn't have to be there.

  833. He's there and he cares. It's

  834. unconditional. That's what his love is

  835. cuz he's not there to punish us. He's

  836. not He's there with his presence. I'm

  837. just want to know I love you and I care.

  838. I'm a very present help in the time of

  839. trouble. Don't do life alone. Let them

  840. walk out. I'm stepping in. I'm on a

  841. search and rescue mission. I'm no longer

  842. a baby in a manger. I grew up and I grew

  843. up for you. The whole reason I came was

  844. I'm fighting to get you in. I love you

  845. like this. And his love is

  846. transformational because he brings life,

  847. restoration, and purpose back to

  848. everything. Would you stand to your feet

  849. in this room?

  850. There's no way for us to qualify or

  851. quantify what the love of Jesus has done

  852. for our lives.

  853. But I can tell you one thing.

  854. I'm a living result of what that love

  855. will do.

  856. I don't like to think where I would be

  857. right now if I didn't know Jesus loved

  858. me and I wasn't responding to him. I

  859. don't like to think where I would be,

  860. where my mind would be, where our

  861. marriage would be, where our home would

  862. be. I can't imagine it without his love

  863. pulling and fighting for, leaning into

  864. our dark places, speaking to us at times

  865. that we didn't even know it was him. But

  866. a peace, a hope, a comfort. Can I remind

  867. you that everything in the advent is all

  868. based on his love?

  869. >> Oh, yeah. Hope is based on his love.

  870. Yes, it is. Peace is based on his love.

  871. joy based on his love. 1 Corinthians 13,

  872. the love chapter says this. In the end,

  873. everything is gone. Three things exist.

  874. Three things make it to the end. Faith,

  875. hope, and love. But the greatest of

  876. these

  877. is love. Because it's the foundation of

  878. all of it.

  879. Today, if you feel unloved and alone, I

  880. got good news. Jesus is here.

  881. and he will lean into your life, his

  882. presence. And by the way, not just

  883. Jesus, a bunch of other folks who have

  884. experienced his love as well. Not

  885. because we're great, but the love that

  886. touched and changed my life. I want you

  887. to experience as much of that as I can

  888. give away. And that's what the house,

  889. that's what this place is about. Don't

  890. you do it alone. Some of you are hanging

  891. off the edge of the bridge looking right

  892. now. And I want you to know that Jesus

  893. is right there with you. His presence

  894. changes everything today. That love is

  895. going to change your life. Would you bow

  896. your heads in this room?

  897. If you're here and you say, "Scott, I

  898. got stuff.

  899. I got issues. I got struggles."

  900. When you were talking about Kevin on a

  901. bridge, that's how I feel in my mind, in

  902. my emotions. I feel like I've reached

  903. the limit. And I don't know that there's

  904. much to keep going for. And I need that

  905. presence that changed Kevin. I need I

  906. need Jesus. I need that love. I need

  907. that embrace. I need that hope, that

  908. peace, that joy. I need something not of

  909. this world. I've tried to live off of

  910. human love. I've tried to live off of

  911. human acceptance for so long.

  912. But I need to feel his love.

  913. And I'm finding out today that Jesus is

  914. not the one that I've got to go find.

  915. He's been searching for me. I'm the one

  916. that's lost. And he's coming for me. And

  917. I want to say yes to Jesus today. If

  918. you're in this room and you want to say

  919. yes to Jesus, him entering your life.

  920. Not that you're going to live perfect.

  921. Not that you've got it all together, but

  922. you're going to give him your chaos,

  923. your mess, your brokenness, your

  924. struggles, your secrets. I'm just giving

  925. you all of it. Cuz that's what he's

  926. asking for. And in turn, he's going to

  927. give you that love, forgiveness, hope,

  928. joy, a new start. If you're saying, "I

  929. want that today." When I count to three,

  930. I want you to shoot your hand in the air

  931. saying, "Scott, I want to pray this

  932. prayer. I want to give Jesus my life." 1

  933. 2 3. Where are you? Where are you? My

  934. goodness. Yes. Hands everywhere. You can

  935. pull them right back down.

  936. Would you look this way? We're going to

  937. pray. Look this way at me.

  938. Some of you are still at a place where

  939. you're struggling right now. I feel this

  940. right here, and I want to talk to you.

  941. There's no good reason that you have as

  942. to why you would reject Jesus today.

  943. You have no reason to say no to him.

  944. It's cost you nothing. It cost him

  945. everything.

  946. And that love that he has for you

  947. doesn't come with strings attached where

  948. he throws elbows and he calls you out.

  949. His arms are wide open to embrace and to

  950. love you. And if you didn't raise your

  951. hand and you don't have any intention in

  952. praying this prayer, I'm still reaching

  953. and I'm including and I'm inviting. Why?

  954. Because that's exactly what the spirit

  955. of Jesus does. I'm coming after you

  956. again and again.

  957. If you raised your hand, if you didn't

  958. raise your hand and you want to get it

  959. right, I want you to just pray this

  960. prayer with me. Say, "Jesus,
