Matthew Chapter 11 when verse 25 at that time Jesus declared, I
Matthew 11 chapter mention
-
thank you Father, Lord of heaven and earth that you have.
-
Hidden these things from the. Wise and understanding and.
-
Revealed them to little children.
-
Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
-
All things have been handed over to me by my father, and no one
-
knows the son except the father, and no one knows the.
-
Father except the Son. And anyone to whom the son.
-
Chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all who labor and
-
are heavy laden, and I will give.
-
You rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn
-
from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart.
-
And you will find rest for your souls.
-
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
-
Jesus, thank you so much for your word.
-
Here, Heavenly Father, we pray that you would bring revelation
-
on the. Words of Jesus this morning on
-
your word that you sent, that your church would be equipped,
-
that we would have. Revelation and understanding and
-
that we would have the. Very thing that Jesus calls us
-
to hear. That we would be like.
-
Children who come to our father that we wouldn't be.
-
Wise in our own eyes that we wouldn't be understanding in our
-
own eyes. But then we would truly have
-
love for. You honor for you.
-
Humility before you so that we could experience.
-
The freedom that comes with it, rolling off our burdens onto the
-
one who carries. All burdens of the whole world,
-
Jesus, be glorified. Through the preaching of your.
-
Word, Holy Spirit, I. Pray for your help as as you
-
minister. To your people.
-
I pray God that. The word would be clear.
-
I pray that it would accomplish as you said it.
-
Would everything you intended. For it to do in Jesus name we
-
thank you Amen. One of the things that's
-
interesting, you know, whenever we quote that promise as we.
-
Should that the word of God? Will not return void, but it
-
will go out and accomplish what the Lord intended for to to
-
accomplish. Sometimes that can be taken to
-
be only A1 sided thing, but the other point to understand there
-
is that another thing the word of God is going to accomplish
-
is. For the hard heart it.
-
Is going to continually. Build up judgement against that
-
person, the Word of God. When it comes to a person.
-
When their heart is already. Hardened, they can continue to
-
harden their heart, even. More, that also is the Lord's
-
will. Being fulfilled against the
-
prideful well, pastor, I thought the.
-
Lord wants to save that person. He does.
-
And yet God deliberately opposes the proud.
-
So this is the danger. Of pride.
-
And this is this. Is why.
-
Whenever you sense any any. Pride in your life.
-
It it should be. Something that that goes above
-
and beyond to. Grab your attention to go.
-
This doesn't lead anywhere good. And this seed needs to be.
-
Ripped out that tiny weed when it comes up in the flower bed.
-
Now is the time to pull it. Not later today when the weather
-
is cooled off. Not tomorrow.
-
Now is the time. To rip that thing out.
-
And you go, man, it's so deep. It's going to rip up the whole
-
flower bed. Then by all means, now is the
-
time to. Rip it all out and destroy the
-
whole flower bed so that something could still be saved.
-
So that the flower bed could still possibly be saved because
-
God's word. Is going to do what?
-
He sent it to do just like it did with Pharaoh.
-
Pharaoh hardened his heart. God sends the word of God to
-
Pharaoh and. And Pharaoh hardened his heart,
-
and Pharaoh hardened his heart, and Pharaoh hardened his heart,
-
and then. The scripture tells us.
-
And God. Hardened Pharaoh's heart.
-
You go hang on. That's not.
-
Fair God opposes the proud. And there there came a time of
-
mercy, there came a time of grace.
-
I mean, how many plagues? Do you have to get?
-
That's called grace. People see the plagues only as
-
wrath, and yet they're also a grace and a mercy and God's
-
patience saying. It's building, it's building,
-
it's building, it's building. And now the full.
-
Judgement comes against Pharaoh as his son is killed and all the
-
sons of Egypt so. We want to approach.
-
The Word of God with humility. Now in this verse we just
-
finished Jesus bringing what what are called the the woes,
-
WOE. Where he is proclaiming
-
judgement on these Jewish. Towns and he's saying woe to
-
you, woe to you. Your condemnation is great.
-
It's horrible. And then he says.
-
It'll be worse for you than it is for these gentile cities.
-
And the Jewish? Heroes would have been.
-
Scandalized and offended and shocked.
-
And then he. Double S down with Capernaum.
-
The city he lives in because they had him.
-
Living and walking among them. And he says Capernaum, for you
-
punishment will be. Worse than it was for Sodom.
-
And that would have just. Blown people's minds wide.
-
Open. Because it doesn't get any
-
worse. Than Sodom and Gomorrah in
-
everyone's mind like this. Is the pinnacle we still.
-
Reference Sodom and Gomorrah we still reference.
-
Them as wickedness, and yet. Jesus recognizes Capernaum.
-
Is going to receive more. Judgement and more punishment We
-
understand that there are degrees of punishment and
-
suffering in hell. How does it work?
-
Not our jurisdiction, but the point is the scripture makes it.
-
Clear in multiple places that there are degrees of punishment.
-
How is it judged? 'Cause hell sounds like hell.
-
Separation from God is separation.
-
From God and. Still, there will be degrees.
-
Of punishment based on what? Based upon the light.
-
That you have received. And that should scare every.
-
One of us in this room, because we've got a lot of light, that
-
should scare. Americans in general who have.
-
Preachers on television. And preachers on the radio.
-
And preachers in the pulpit. And I don't like this.
-
Church, so I think. I'll go up the road to that
-
church and I don't know about that one, so I'll go up to this
-
one. That's a lot of light available.
-
Light everywhere you turn, there's.
-
Light. Now we're grieved by the
-
darkness. That we see in our.
-
Nation as we should be, because we want more light.
-
More light? How much is enough?
-
All of it. Jesus should own everything
-
let's take over the world with the love of God and and the
-
Kingdom and the. Fruit of the Spirit, so there's
-
a lot of light. There, but with.
-
That comes a lot of responsibility we have.
-
Bibles. How many Bibles are in your
-
home? How many are in my home?
-
We can have His Word in our heart.
-
So that's a lot of. Light and he's saying,
-
Capernaum, you've had a lot of light, you've had a lot of.
-
Opportunity, and because of it. Your lack of obedience to the
-
light that you've been given. Will be.
-
Your judgement in the same. Way there are rewards.
-
In heaven and in the eternal Kingdom.
-
I thought heaven is heaven. I just want to get in.
-
Well, your reward won't be great.
-
There are degrees of reward. How's all that work?
-
Don't know, not really my. Jurisdiction, but.
-
There are rewards and. Degrees of.
-
Reward in heaven there are. Rewards and degrees of
-
punishment. In Hell.
-
So God is just in all that he. Does It's not just heaven or
-
hell, there's also. Degrees there.
-
So Jesus has been judging these places.
-
He says it'll be more tolerable on the day of judgment.
-
For Sodom than it will be for. Capernaum at that time, Jesus.
-
Declared. Now Jesus begins to pray openly
-
and publicly. So he's.
-
Rebuked the Pharisees for praying openly and publicly.
-
But is he really rebuking open public prayer?
-
No, He's rebuking hypocrisy. They were praying because.
-
They wanted to. Look like somebody special.
-
The motive of their heart is what he was condemning and
-
correcting. Well, how do you know?
-
Well, you know, and the Lord. Knows.
-
I might be. Able to deceive you.
-
I might be able to preach and. Pray publicly and you go.
-
Man, man, he's such a godly man. Well, Joe Michael knows.
-
The Lord knows and the. Scary thing is of what if John
-
Michael doesn't know? What if he goes so far as even
-
to deceive? Himself.
-
And that's the scary place that you don't want to get to.
-
That's why we always want to pull those weeds.
-
As soon as we see him, that's. Why we always want to be humble
-
and. Receptive when others come to.
-
Us with concern and correction. But.
-
Jesus begins to pray publicly. I thank you, Father, Lord of
-
heaven and earth, so he's praying and everyone can hear
-
this. Prayer.
-
That you have hidden. These things, What things?
-
The things he was just talking about.
-
The woes, the judgments. That he's put on these villages.
-
And on these cities. And on the truth.
-
Behind it, he's saying, Father, I thank you that you have that
-
you've done it the way that. You've done it so that those who
-
think that there's something will be nothing and that those
-
who are actually humble and don't think that there anything
-
will be lifted. Up Jesus.
-
Saying, Father, I thank you for doing it that way.
-
I love the way you've done it. Father, because it's perfect.
-
And because it's right, you have hidden these things from the
-
wise and understanding and revealed.
-
Them to little children Yes, Father, for such was your
-
gracious will. So when Jesus is talking about
-
the. Wise and understanding he's
-
being. Sarcastic.
-
This is sanctified sarcasm. I'd like to think I specialize
-
in that. I hope it's a sanctified sarcasm
-
and not just a fleshly sarcasm. But when he says.
-
The wise and understanding. He's being sarcastic, he's
-
saying. That the father is.
-
Hidden these things from people who think that they're wise.
-
And think that. They have great understanding.
-
But when people are actually. Wise.
-
When they actually have understanding.
-
They have a fear of God. And that's what was missing.
-
Here, that's what's missing to the people that Jesus condemns
-
and he rebukes and he rejects. There's No Fear of God in their
-
eyes, and that's why the judgment.
-
Is going to be so great for. For those in the United.
-
States for those who sit in church pews or.
-
Plastic chairs every single Sunday whenever there's not
-
actual fruit. Of.
-
Repentance when there's not actual humility, when there's
-
not an actual fear of the Lord, is there fear of the Lord?
-
In your eyes, because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of
-
wisdom, if I really want wisdom. Proverbs 910 tells me the.
-
Fear of the. Lord is the beginning of wisdom
-
and the knowledge of the. Holy One is understanding.
-
I've got wisdom. I've got understanding.
-
Is there a fear of the? Lord, in your eyes.
-
Because that'll affect everything that'll.
-
Change everything about your life.
-
Wisdom and knowledge revolve around God.
-
So imagine, just like our solar system, everything's.
-
Revolving around the sun if if, if God is the sun, these planets
-
and these moons and all these things that.
-
Revolve around the sun. These are wisdom and knowledge.
-
And his goodness and his. Truth.
-
And if you don't fear God, then you're not in that orbit and you
-
don't have knowledge of Him, and you don't have knowledge of His.
-
Holiness is what proverbs. Says knowledge of the Holy One.
-
Not just knowledge of God's existence, but knowledge of the
-
holiness. Of God, and that's why you act
-
the way you do. Fear of God will cause.
-
You to act differently knowledge.
-
Of the holiness of God. Will impact your decision
-
making. Your social media will look.
-
Different. Your family culture will look
-
different. Your language will sound
-
different. You'll train your children
-
differently. You'll love your wife with
-
gentleness and kindness. You'll respect your husband with
-
honor and submission. And you'll hear this preaching.
-
And be convicted. Instead of hoping that someone
-
else is convicted as I went through that list.
-
That's what wisdom and understanding actually look
-
like. I'm not going.
-
Mm. Hmm.
-
Hope you heard that, Natalie. I'm going.
-
Oh Lord. Lord, is it me and Lord's going,
-
Yeah, it's. For you, it's for you now.
-
Love for neighbor? Will create a motivation for
-
them to hear. And respond.
-
But love for God and fear of God will always make sure that I
-
look to me first, that I take the log.
-
Out of my own eye and then I can help my brother.
-
With the speck in his instead of oh.
-
Let me, let me help you with that.
-
There's a plank sticking out of your face, Joe Michael.
-
That was the language. Jesus used, That's comical,
-
that's funny. The audience probably would have
-
laughed. He'd be like, you got a log in
-
your eye, like that's a funny visual.
-
Oh, but let me get the splinter out of yours.
-
But God has hidden his. Truth from the proud.
-
And he has. Revealed it to the humble God
-
shines his light. For you.
-
But if you won't, humble. Yourself and receive it.
-
Then his light just becomes more evidence.
-
Of your guilt on the. Judgment Day.
-
And he goes, Look at all the light.
-
Look at all the light you go. Oh.
-
Look at all the opportunity. Look at all the scripture.
-
Look at all the revelation. Look at all the.
-
Things that you knew. Look at all the things you could
-
have gotten right on a. Paper test, but life is.
-
Not a paper test. We won't stand in front of the
-
Lord on judgment day and take a paper test.
-
I can get all these theological answers correct.
-
Let me in or give me a great reward.
-
That's not how. He'll judge.
-
He'll judge based upon the light.
-
That you have so the man who's never heard the.
-
Gospel who still lives? In the the Bush of the Amazon.
-
And he'll die in that darkness. Does he go to?
-
Hell outside of Christ. It's a simple answer.
-
The answer is yes. Everyone goes to hell outside
-
of. Christ.
-
Why? Because nature itself will lead
-
people to Lord the creation. Itself is designed by God.
-
To lead people to their creator and yet nature.
-
Itself is not the greatest. Light possible Is there the
-
greatest light possible is? The clarification of the gospel
-
into the hearts of mankind. But nature is not nothing.
-
It's not no light, but it's not the brighter.
-
Light so there's an appropriate judgement.
-
There's an appropriate punishment to accommodate that
-
versus the person who's heard the gospel and heard the gospel
-
and heard the gospel and heard the gospel. 11 missionary once
-
said no person. Deserves to hear the gospel
-
twice until. Everyone has heard it once, and
-
how many times have you and I heard the truths of God and the
-
revelation of God? And we just love to marinate.
-
On those things. And there's nothing wrong with
-
loving God's truths. And yet, sometimes this can
-
just. Become endless navel gazing
-
really, and just fill it. Waterlogging.
-
Ourselves with things that. We're not bearing fruit in you
-
learn something new, you get new.
-
Revelation Are you just excited to teach that?
-
Revelation to somebody else. Or has that?
-
Revelation brought fruit in your life because I know preachers, I
-
know people, and I've been in that.
-
Same rut before where? I'm my my time with the Lord is
-
like, oh, I can't wait to. Tell that to somebody.
-
Man. As a preacher, as a.
-
Teacher that's that might be an A temptation I have even more
-
so. Than some of you where?
-
Am I? Oh, I got to share that.
-
Oh, I got to share that. It's, it's fire.
-
Shut up in my bones. Is that what it is?
-
Is it really the Lord? Doing that Or is it just you not
-
being humble enough to look at? Yourself and say Lord.
-
Apply it to me, Lord, apply it to me.
-
Make it real for me so. It's not just knowledge.
-
But it's actually connected to him.
-
The fear of the Lord and His Holiness.
-
God's system is perfect, Romans. 8 and 29 and. 30 Spell this out
-
for us. We know that God foreknew who
-
would be humble, so he predestined to save who would be
-
humble. Then he called the humble, and
-
then he justifies the humble, and then he glorifies the humble
-
to God predestined people. Of course he did.
-
Absolutely he did. The scripture says that he did.
-
What does that mean exactly? Well, he foreknew.
-
Who would respond? He foreknew, so those are the
-
ones that he then saves and those are the ones that he then.
-
Calls and that he justifies, and that he glorifies.
-
He also knew who wouldn't. Receive, so he lets.
-
Them have what they want. Which is more of themselves?
-
And their own wisdom, and their own understanding.
-
And Jesus is thankful for this. He's thankful, Father, I thank.
-
You that you did it this way and if Jesus is.
-
Thankful you and I should be. Thankful too.
-
Not begrudging these points, not going Why did God?
-
Set it up this way. I wish he had done it
-
differently. Jesus is thankful.
-
And we should be too. He calls it.
-
He says, Father, this was your gracious will.
-
How is this gracious? How is this gracious to people?
-
It's gracious because everything is grace.
-
You might be tempted to read this and think it's unfair to
-
the proud, but that would miss the greater point, and that the
-
greater point is the fact that anyone is even allowed to.
-
Breathe. In sin.
-
That's grace and mercy. The fact that anybody exists.
-
At all is already a grace and a mercy, so the fact that the
-
Father would. Reveal anything to anyone is
-
incredible, like we were saying. Earlier gratitude.
-
Gratitude. Instead of my eyes on all the
-
prayers that haven't been answered.
-
And don't forget what the Lord has done for you.
-
Don't get your eyes. Off of who he is and how.
-
Much he's given to you. Jesus is thankful that the
-
Father has done it this way. So the response is the the
-
response of the humble is not ha ha.
-
I've received and you haven't received.
-
The response of the humble is always thank you so much God,
-
thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord.
-
I didn't deserve it, but you provided it.
-
The prideful don't care. They don't.
-
Care they disregard, they go. Oh, another option.
-
Oh, another possibility. But.
-
Jesus makes clear there's not multiple options.
-
There's not multiple possibilities.
-
He says no one knows the father except the Son.
-
And no one knows the son except the father, and he says I have
-
to reveal. The father to you again another
-
clarification. There is no.
-
Other world. Religion who worships the same
-
God as Christians we worship. Different gods.
-
The Gods of. Israel and the Old Testament.
-
They were following the the true trinitarian God, but a modern
-
day. Jew.
-
Is not worshipping the same God? They are not well, we we kind of
-
worship the same God like they. Just worship the Father, but we
-
worship. The Son.
-
You can't worship one person in the Trinity unless you want to
-
be a cult member. So we're not worshiping the same
-
God because the God is Father's son and spirit.
-
Muslims. Well, they just call God Allah,
-
but it's the same God. No it's not.
-
These are. Idols.
-
This is what idolatry is. You make God in your image.
-
Well, to me God is this. To me, God is that Like who are
-
you or your God? Apparently because.
-
You can make stuff up now you can just create things.
-
That's idolatry. Everything outside of
-
Christianity is idolatry. Spoken like a Christian.
-
Yes, I'll own it. I'll take it.
-
Spoken like somebody who points all glory to Jesus and says
-
that. Jesus is King, so this is
-
gracious the way the Father. Has done this because.
-
It works. It works perfectly.
-
The prideful get what they want, which was themselves, and they
-
reject him. And then on judgement day they
-
don't say. They don't even.
-
Get to say no fair he goes gave you everything you wanted oh you
-
ever wanted was you and. They go, you got me there, like.
-
If the case is going to be airtight, there won't be some
-
defense that goes actually, Lord, hang on a second.
-
There, there won't be some way out.
-
The Lord is more fair. Than you and I.
-
He is more just than any judge. He's perfect.
-
In all of his ways and all of his judgements.
-
So This is why. Jesus can condemn these cities,
-
and it's right. And it's just because they had.
-
So much light. But their pride was so.
-
Great that they wouldn't receive.
-
They were wise in their own eyes.
-
And they were busy. They had to continue doing their
-
own thing. He says you revealed it to
-
children. You revealed these truths to
-
little. Children.
-
Little children, what do they like?
-
They're unassuming. They know that they don't run
-
the show. Or own the room they're.
-
Humble and they are hungry for knowledge.
-
They accept the. Truth as they are.
-
Told We tell little children anything, they'll believe us.
-
They'll just believe us, right? There's all kinds of things.
-
Adults tell little. Children, they just believe
-
them. And keep it going for years.
-
They'll just keep believing it. They're humble.
-
They're. Unassuming, but that's not the.
-
Case entire and Sidon and then. Also even in Capernaum.
-
That's not the case with many people.
-
Many people, they might be around the Kingdom all the time,
-
but they aren't really in the. Kingdom and this is the danger
-
this. Is why preaching to people who
-
are around the Kingdom all the time I think is much more.
-
Difficult than people who are totally out of it.
-
I think the lines are much more. Clear.
-
I talked to you about this at Easter.
-
I think you're the hardest people in the world.
-
To preach to, I think, ministry in the Bible.
-
Belt is more difficult than anywhere else.
-
Oh. That's hard ground.
-
Yeah, I know. But.
-
At least everybody knows. Everybody's clear.
-
No, I'm a Muslim. Get out of.
-
Here with that Christianity, OK, at least we're clear on what's
-
going on. You know, you go to more liberal
-
areas. In the United States.
-
You go, are you a Christian? They'll plainly and and easily
-
say, no, I'm not, I'm not. And you go, oh, OK, but anywhere
-
in the American South, you're a Christian.
-
Oh, yeah. Like, tell me more about that.
-
That's awesome. Well, you know, aren't we all
-
OK? No, we're not actually.
-
Well, I am. My grandma bought the.
-
Pew at the church and yeah, we go, we go to.
-
That's always funny to me. We go to such and such.
-
Oh, OK. Like, well, tell me about that.
-
And I'm just like. Genuinely being inquisitive and
-
friendly with somebody. They're like, well, I haven't
-
been in a while. I'm like, oh, OK.
-
Turns out like Christmas and Easter like but we go there but
-
people. Believe that, like people think
-
that they're a part of local congregations and they'll say
-
that and they don't. They're not.
-
They don't even think they're being dishonest, like to them
-
they're not lying. Like no, no.
-
We go to such and such. Oh, that's awesome, man.
-
So you know, Bob y'all, y'all spend a lot of time.
-
We haven't been there in a while.
-
And then the truth comes out like.
-
Christmas and Easter preachers, we have a word for that.
-
They're called creasters. It's like.
-
The The creasters are coming. Christmas and Easter like.
-
Are you, are you mocking them? Maybe a little bit.
-
Yeah. It's sanctified sarcasm.
-
It's funny. It's not funny.
-
And it is what it is. And you love them like I'm here
-
for you, I care for you. And also I can call.
-
A spade a spade, but it's dangerous to be.
-
Around these things all the time to have.
-
All this light. And then to squander it to not
-
do. Anything with it like Capernaum
-
did? Oh.
-
Capernaum. I can't believe it, man.
-
If I had been there, what would I have done?
-
Well. You have the Lord of glory
-
living in you, so you say, So what?
-
Are you doing with them? What does that look like?
-
Knowledge of the Bible is not the same thing as knowledge.
-
Of the Holy One. Knowing about God isn't the same
-
thing as knowing God. One will make you proud, the
-
other will make you humble. I've got knowledge.
-
I've got knowledge. Knowledge will puff you up.
-
I'm puffed up, man. I know so much stuff.
-
That's an advantage that I have. I don't know a lot of stuff.
-
So I got that. Working in my favor one makes
-
you proud. Knowledge can just make.
-
You proud, but knowledge of the Holy One will make you humble
-
and then? We'll just hit this part quickly
-
where Jesus is saying. Just want to point out.
-
Jesus calls the Father. He says he's the Lord.
-
Of heaven and earth that means. That the Father sees all, the
-
Father knows all, every heart, every motive.
-
Every thought, every holy and every unholy desire.
-
And now Jesus says in verse 27, All things have been handed over
-
to me by my Father. So.
-
Everything. All authority in heaven.
-
And Earth, he says later. In Matthew 28, we'll finally get
-
there one day, he says He's been given to me.
-
Why the? Father loves Jesus, He is deeply
-
pleased with Jesus, and because of that he gives Jesus the name
-
that is above. Every name and he gives.
-
Jesus, the nations as his inheritance.
-
That's what we read in Psalm 2 earlier.
-
He says, I'll give you the nations as your inheritance.
-
They'll be yours. And for those who are humble.
-
They'll be. Protected, they'll come into him
-
as their shelter and then for. Those who aren't, they'll get.
-
The rod of iron. And the scripture says he will
-
break them to pieces. Humility.
-
And pride? No one knows.
-
The Father, except the Son. And no one knows.
-
No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the.
-
Father except the son, and he says.
-
Into anyone to. Whom the son chooses to reveal
-
him? That's verse 27 as.
-
Well, all. Things have been handed over to
-
me by my father and no one knows the father.
-
No one knows the Son except for the Father.
-
And no one knows the Father except for the Son.
-
And to anyone and anyone to whom the son.
-
Chooses to reveal him that. Was the point I was making
-
earlier, religions that don't have Jesus, people who don't
-
love Jesus, people don't pray in Jesus name, then they don't have
-
the Father. I think they've got the Father,
-
they just don't know the Son. That's not how that.
-
Works, Jesus says if you. Don't have me.
-
You don't have my father. He says And you can't know the
-
Father except that I choose to reveal the Father to you if
-
Jesus doesn't choose to reveal the Father to you.
-
You can't know the father. This is basic reading
-
comprehension. We're not shoehorning that in
-
there. That's.
-
Just what he said. Real plain stuff.
-
And then that raises this question though.
-
OK, so who does? Jesus reveal the Father to.
-
Who does Jesus reveal the Father to?
-
Well, that's easy. We've already answered that to
-
children. To the humble, to the.
-
Hungry what? He told.
-
Us in Matthew chapter 5. To the poor in spirit.
Matthew 5 chapter mention
-
So who does he choose? What does he just randomly
-
picking here? How's he?
-
Doing this thing. Is he just rolling the dice?
-
No. Jesus chooses to reveal the
-
Father. To all who are humble.
-
Man, how does this work? Is it the chicken or the egg?
-
Is it the cart? Is it the horse?
-
God predestined those he foreknew.
-
He foreknew. Who was going to be humble?
-
Who was going to be receptive? Who was going to be prideful?
-
So then he predestined that he would save them.
-
J Michael Whatever. Are we Calvinists?
-
Are we? Armenian We're Christians and we
-
understand and recognize that there is mystery in the
-
Scripture and there are things. Out of our jurisdiction.
-
And it's intended. To be that way.
-
And I and I, I don't come to the conclusions that some come to in
-
either of those camps. If you say I don't.
-
Know what I don't know? What Calvinists or Armenian
-
means? Don't worry about it.
-
Google it if you. Feel like it, but don't hurt
-
yourself in the process. But the point is.
-
Well, are we predestined? Are we not predestined?
-
And, well, the. The scriptures are the
-
scriptures. They're good.
-
And faithful and true. And at the same time, there's
-
mystery involved in. These things.
-
But the point is, we can choose to be humble.
-
And when you choose. Humility, then.
-
Jesus chooses to reveal the Father to you.
-
Who does? The son choose to reveal to
-
children, to humble, to hungry. To the poor in spirit, to those
-
who actually. Know that they need him.
-
Those, he foreknew, would receive the truth.
-
And then we come to verse 28. Come to me.
-
All who labor. And are heavy laden and I will
-
give you. Rest.
-
So he's given all these warnings.
-
He's just threatened these cities and really condemned
-
these cities. And told them what will happen
-
on judgment day for them and then he explains that the.
-
Father, he says. Father, I thank you the way
-
you've done this, that you have made it so that.
-
Capernaum will be judged harshly.
-
But that those who are. Humble and hungry out in the
-
world, the Gentiles. The pagans, the filthy godless
-
that the Jews hate that when they repent.
-
When they're humble, that you're going to save them.
-
I thank you, Father, that. You've done it this way.
-
Why? Because Jesus hates the people.
-
Capernaum No. Because Jesus hates pride.
-
Because Jesus is the. Epitome of humility, God.
-
Himself wraps up in flesh. Joins us in the dirt.
-
Lets us spit in his face. Lets us Pierce his hands and his
-
feet. And mock him, punch him, rip out
-
his beard and crucify him. When you're that God with that
-
humility, you don't have much. Tolerance for pride.
-
You hate it and you go. You got no ground to stand on.
-
So he says, Father, I thank you that you've done it this way.
-
And now the listeners. Who are?
-
Afraid like this thing is building this massive.
-
Wave of the of the clarity. And the, and the holiness of God
-
has been building the wrath of God and all and the humble, but
-
there's humble listeners in this audience too.
-
There's humble disciples who are like, master, what's the way out
-
for me? And now he turns here at the
-
last moment. Come to me.
-
Oh, you who Labor. And are heavy laden and I'll
-
give you rest. What's the answer come to?
-
Jesus is the answer. Come to me, come to me.
-
Don't just learn about me, but come to me.
-
You who labor and are heavy laden.
-
And I will give you. Rest the words labor heavy laden
-
this. This audience would have
-
understood this. They would have pictured the
-
animals that they work with. They would have seen themselves.
-
And the and the hard labor that they have.
-
During the day, the physical labor.
-
They didn't have computer. Jobs, they got stuff that.
-
They're they're earning everything by their sweat, he
-
says. Come to me.
-
I'll give you rest take. My yoke upon.
-
You and learn from me. For I am gentle and lowly in
-
heart, and you will find. Rest for your souls.
-
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
-
Jesus is gentle and Jesus. Is lowly in heart, man Lord.
-
Could you say that about me? Gentle and lowly in heart.
-
I'm going to be strong in heart. I'm going to be high in heart.
-
I'm going to be full of heart. Jesus says, hey, I'm gentle, I'm
-
lowly in heart. He's just so quick to take the
-
low spot. Which is why the father.
-
Is so eager to promote him and say all.
-
Authority in heaven and earth. And he says whoever doesn't.
-
Do right by my son will not do right by me.
-
I love my son. He just takes the lowest place.
-
He's eventually going to bow. Before the Father in the garden
-
and. Say, Father, not my will.
-
But yours be done. Not my will I'll take.
-
I'll keep. Taking the low spot at the
-
table. And the father says I'm.
-
Going to give you the nations as your inheritance because.
-
Because you didn't assume anything.
-
I give you everything. Come to me, all you.
-
Who are who? Labor.
-
And are heavy laden. How are you laboring?
-
And you're heavy laden. With sin.
-
With the pride of life. With the lust of the eyes, with
-
the lust of the flesh, I'll give you rest.
-
Jesus gives deep rest, rest. From the exhausting sin of pride
-
rest from the demanding sin that masters every single person who.
-
Hasn't surrendered to Jesus. Why?
-
Because. Sin is harsh, sin is.
-
Hard. Sin is heavy.
-
Jesus knows that, and he still invites us in all of.
-
Our hard heartedness take. My yoke upon me and learn from
-
me. Jesus has a yoke.
-
There is one. But then he goes on to say, but
-
it's easy, it fits perfectly and he says, and guess who's going
-
to do all? The pulling.
-
We yoke up to Jesus, and then Jesus pulls us forward if.
-
You're connected to him. He's good and you get his
-
strength. Jesus is humble and he will
-
teach you to be like him. He knows the Father and if you
-
will be like a child then Jesus will reveal the Father to you
-
and you will have rest where for your soul a body at rest can
-
certainly be refreshing. And we'll get a nap this
-
afternoon. That will be refreshing, but a
-
soul at. Rest is another thing entirely.
-
The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want.
-
That's a soul at rest that's speaking there.
-
The Lord is my shepherd. What a relief.
-
What a relief. And because.
-
Of that I'll have no needs. He makes me.
-
Oh, he's he's pretty bossy. Huh.
-
What's he make me do? He makes me lie down in green
-
pastures. Oh, he leads me.
-
Where does he? Lead me besides still waters.
-
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of
-
righteousness. Why?
-
For his name's sake. For me, because I'm the
-
greatest. Well, he does love you, but he
-
does it for. His name's sake, and even though
-
I walk. Through the valley of the shadow
-
of death, I'll fear no evil for you.
-
Are with me your rod. Your staff, they comfort me.
-
What else does he do? The soul at rest knows.
-
You prepare a table before me in the presence.
-
Of my enemies you anoint my head with oil my cup.
-
Overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall
-
follow me all the. Days of my life, and I shall
-
dwell in the House of. The Lord forever, that's the
-
soul at rest. So I.
-
Don't feel like a? Soul at rest?
-
Well then, all the more. Reason to go to Jesus.
-
Come to me, come to me, come to me.
-
What's the promise Psalm? 23 is the promise.
-
That's the shepherd. That's what it looks like.
-
That's what it feels like. It looks like something.
-
It feels like something. And if you don't recognize that?
-
If you haven't. Walked in that if you.
-
Haven't tasted. That if you haven't seen that,
-
then you haven't tasted and seen and walked with Jesus yet you
-
thought you did. You were deceived.
-
You were confused. No condemnation for any of that.
-
This is a good news moment. The good news moment is come to
-
me, but coming. To Jesus looks like something.
-
It looks like an obedience. It looks like a humility.
-
He leads. And that implies that you
-
follow. He leads me over there.
-
Does it say he grabs me and drags me kicking and screaming?
-
Reject your own wisdom, reject your own understanding and enjoy
-
freedom from shame, freedom from fear of man, freedom from the.
-
Slavery of self. My yoke is easy.
-
My burden is light. Have you taken Jesus's yoke?
-
Upon you, really. Have you carried his burden?
-
Really. Are you yoked to Jesus?
-
Right. Now Chris and Kayla.
-
Are going to serve us the communion elements this morning.
-
And we're going to take this moment.
-
To to pray we're. Going to take these.
-
Next few moments to prepare our hearts.
-
That we wouldn't. Take the body and the blood of
-
Christ. In an unworthy.
-
Way like we said last. Week that we wouldn't trample
-
upon Christ. He's the only thing standing
-
between US and the Cliff. The car that's driving, he steps
-
out in the way and says, hey, go ahead and stop, go ahead and put
-
it in. Put it in park.
-
I'm going to help you turn this thing around and go.
-
The other direction if we were to trample.
-
Christ, there's nothing else. There's nothing else.
-
There's no one else. There's not a guardrail, there's
-
not a speed bump. It's only Christ.
-
So let's come to a full. Stop.
-
Let's honor him. Honor him in your heart.
-
Figure it out for yourself. I'm not going to lead you in a.
-
Step by step, word by word, prayer, take your humility to
-
the Lord. And if you have pride, take your
-
pride to the Lord. Adam, can you bring up the
-
background music for us? We're.
-
Just going to have. A a moment.
-
Or two of silence. Or I'm gonna shut up.
-
I mean as you pray.
