  1. Is where we're going. So today, finally, we are

  2. finishing. It takes me a lot longer to say

  3. things than Jesus does because Jesus is a much better preacher

  4. and he's better at everything. So we've been taking a few weeks

  5. now and but we're, we're still in the same moment.

  6. We're still in this moment where Jesus cast a demon out of a guy

  7. and it should have just been happily ever after.

  8. Everybody goes, wow, he's awesome, let's worship him and

  9. love him forever. But instead the absurdity, the

  10. stupidity, the hatred of Christ starts showing up.

  11. And now Jesus is dropping bombs and bombs and bombs and he's

  12. rebuking these guys. He's rebuking the religious

  13. leaders. Is he rebuking the religious

  14. leaders because they are religious leaders?

  15. Everybody say no, no, that would be stupid.

  16. Jesus doesn't hate religious leaders.

  17. Jesus hates pride. I'm a religious leader.

  18. Jesus doesn't hate me. But what Jesus does hate is

  19. pride. So that's what he's attacking in

  20. scripture. So whenever you you hear that

  21. argument sometimes, well, Jesus, Jesus went after the religious

  22. leaders. That's a true statement.

  23. Why did he go after the religious leaders?

  24. It was because of their pride and their rejection of the

  25. actual word of God. So pride is always to be

  26. rejected, whether it comes from me or you or anyone else,

  27. doesn't matter. Pride is the issue.

  28. And in that moment and in that day, sinners knew who they were

  29. and the Saints supposedly knew who they were.

  30. So there was some dynamics that were happening there.

  31. Whereas in our day and age, things have shifted a bit,

  32. haven't they? Sinners don't know who they are.

  33. Sinners claim that they're not sinners.

  34. Sinners even go so far in our context to say there is no sin.

  35. How dare you for calling it such a thing.

  36. It's just freedom and love and choice and everything's

  37. wonderful. But the Scriptures are the final

  38. answer. The Scriptures are God's answer

  39. for everything. So Jesus is bringing clarity,

  40. He's bringing rebuke, He's bringing correction.

  41. And now finally, we come to the end of this section where he is

  42. finished teaching, but only because he's interrupted by

  43. someone. So that's what we're going to

  44. talk about today. In your Christian walk, there

  45. are going to be people far off, far off from your life, detached

  46. from you, who try to get you to shut up about Jesus and his

  47. Kingdom. These are enemies, and they are

  48. usually easy to recognize because they have never shown

  49. care for you, and you know that you should reject whatever they

  50. tell you. But there's another group of

  51. people that you're going to come across who can be much more

  52. dangerous than your obvious enemies.

  53. They can be much more dangerous for two reasons #1 because you

  54. might find it harder to recognize their errors, and #2

  55. because you might be swayed away from God's will for your life

  56. because of their strong influence over you.

  57. This, this group of people are your are your family and your

  58. friends. And this is the pressure that

  59. Jesus experiences in the passage that we're going to look at this

  60. morning. Family and friends carry a

  61. weight with us, as they should. That's a totally natural and

  62. good outcome of a relationship, isn't it?

  63. You and I spend more time together and we have more

  64. influence over one another. So when I speak, you go, hey,

  65. Joe, Michael has influence with me.

  66. And when you speak, I go, hey, he or she has influence with me.

  67. So it bears weight, right? We've got some gravity where

  68. we're pulling one another, and that's a blessing of a

  69. relationship. The closer we are with someone,

  70. the more influence we have on them and the more influence they

  71. have on us. But when it comes to our walk

  72. with God, what happens when those were closest to when they

  73. pressure US against our convictions?

  74. This is when things get dangerous.

  75. This is when things can get shaky.

  76. So in those moments, God's Word is going to give us instruction

  77. in that exact thing here today. So I'm going to read to you in

  78. chapter 12. We're going to pick up in verse

  79. 46. So Jesus has just finished

  80. dropping bombs. Dropping bombs, you Pharisees,

  81. you're going to be judged. Here's how you're going to be

  82. judged. Here's who's going to judge you.

  83. And now we come to verse 46 while he was still speaking to

  84. the people. So Jesus has not come up for air

  85. yet. He's just dropping bombs while

  86. he's still speaking to the people.

  87. Behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside asking to

  88. speak to him, but he replied to the man who told him, Who is my

  89. mother and who are my brothers? And stretching out his hand

  90. toward his disciples, he said, here are my mother and my

  91. brothers, for whoever does the will of my father in heaven is

  92. my brother and sister and mother.

  93. I read to you from the ESV. I made a mistake.

  94. I meant to read to you another passage because the ESV removes

  95. verse 47. So I'm going to read to you the

  96. passage that includes verse 47. While he was still speaking to

  97. the crowds, his mother and brothers were standing outside

  98. waiting to speak to him. And someone told him, there's

  99. verse 47. Someone told him, look, your

  100. mother and brothers are standing outside wanting to speak to you.

  101. Let me answer the obvious question.

  102. Why would a verse be removed? Different manuscripts handle

  103. things differently. Sometimes they would say, hey,

  104. we feel like this one is more reliable.

  105. This one is less reliable. We're we're sure about this.

  106. We're not sure about that. It's nothing to panic over.

  107. The word of God is super stable. It is still the anvil that has

  108. worn out every hammer who's ever struck it.

  109. And there's there's nothing to get distracted by here.

  110. So there's no smoke and mirrors going on with pastors.

  111. Just we're going to focus on what we're going to focus on.

  112. We're going to keep moving forward.

  113. So someone told him, look, your mother and brother and brothers

  114. are standing outside waiting to speak to you.

  115. Verse 48. He replied to the one who was

  116. speaking to him, Who is my mother and who are my brothers?

  117. Stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, here are

  118. my mother and my brothers, for whoever does the will of my

  119. Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.

  120. God, bring us revelation and light on this.

  121. Help us to see what was happening and help us to

  122. understand what it means in this moment.

  123. God, we pray that you would bring us clarity for our

  124. relationships and that you would help us to stay faithful to you

  125. in our convictions in the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

  126. In Jesus name we thank you. Amen.

  127. He is still speaking when this happens and his family comes to

  128. interrupt him. So the, the, the short version

  129. of what's going on here is Jesus's mother and Jesus's

  130. brothers are panicking and they're afraid of all the

  131. pressure that Jesus is receiving and it's impacting them.

  132. They're feeling the emotional strain and pressure of who Jesus

  133. is and what he's doing. You've got a family member who's

  134. gone off the deep end and it's embarrassing to you.

  135. And huge crowds are following this family member.

  136. And now this family member is rebuking, rebuking firmly the

  137. people who you looked up to, who your whole society looks up to.

  138. And your, your, your family member is speaking as though

  139. your family member has authority over all earthly authorities.

  140. You're nervous, you're embarrassed, you're

  141. uncomfortable. You're going, we'll talk to him.

  142. That's what you're trying to do here.

  143. You're trying to do damage control.

  144. Now, for most of us, for our family members, that would be

  145. the right thing to do if they were claiming to have the

  146. authority of God, that would be the right thing to do for all of

  147. us. By the way, in this case, it's

  148. dead wrong. Mary and Jesus's brothers are

  149. dead wrong in what they're doing.

  150. So he's still speaking and they interrupt him.

  151. This is a clue. You don't interrupt Jesus if you

  152. believe in Jesus. Notice who interrupts Jesus in

  153. the Gospels? His enemies, his opponents.

  154. Master, what about teacher? What about and all?

  155. All of the interruptions come from the fools who hate Christ

  156. and who are trying to undermine Christ.

  157. So we have other gospel writers who give us more context to

  158. understand what was happening here.

  159. We know that eventually Mary and the brothers of Jesus will

  160. believe and will follow. We know that.

  161. And yet we also know that right now they are struggling.

  162. John 7 verse 5 tells us that not even Jesus's brothers believed

    John 7:5

  163. in Him. Then in Mark chapter 3, we see

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  164. this exact event, this same scenario, the he's just told

  165. them about you, the Pharisees. You've just committed the

  166. unforgivable sin and he's, he's raining down all the judgment on

  167. them. Mark 3 gives us the same thing

  168. happening and it gives us more context, more precisely

  169. described. So I'm going to take you there,

  170. Mark chapter 3, turn to the right in your Bible.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  171. You're just going to go over one book.

  172. So this is the same event. Mark chapter 3, verse 20.

    Mark 3:20

  173. Then he went home. The crowd gathered again so that

  174. they could not even eat. And when his family heard of it,

  175. they went out to seize him for they were saying he is out of

  176. his mind. Man, how did that get in my

  177. Bible? It's been there the whole time.

  178. Mary and the brothers of Jesus are going, hey guys, we'll deal

  179. with him. We'll take care of this.

  180. He's out of his mind. We can continue here through the

  181. context of it's the same event. Mark gives less detail than

  182. Matthew does. Matthew has given us the play by

  183. play. He said this, they said that, he

  184. said this, they said that. But now you go in verse 22 where

  185. they make the accusation Jesus is driving out demons by the

  186. power of demons. And but then we continue to

  187. verse 30 and then verse 31 Jesus said or the Scripture says, and

  188. his mother and brothers came to him and standing out that side,

  189. they sent to him and called him and a crowd was sitting around

  190. him. And they said to him, your

  191. mother and brothers are outside seeking you.

  192. And he answered them, who are my mother and who are my brothers?

  193. And looking, looking about at those who sat around him, he

  194. said, here are my mother and my brothers for whoever does the

  195. will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.

  196. So in context, we know that they're not just saying, hey, we

  197. just, we just want to hang out. If they wanted to be with Jesus,

  198. they could have been with Jesus. But they're deliberately

  199. interrupting what he's doing. Why there's they're telling

  200. people he he's out of his mind. They're trying to make an excuse

  201. for him. They're trying to justify they

  202. love Jesus. It's very likely that they love

  203. him. Remember Mary?

  204. Everything Mary experienced, she hasn't forgotten those things,

  205. has she? She hasn't forgotten the angels.

  206. She hasn't forgotten the wise men when he was around 2 years

  207. old. She hasn't forgotten the

  208. prophecies. She hasn't forgotten the fact

  209. that she was a virgin who got pregnant.

  210. She hasn't forgotten any of these things.

  211. None of this is lost on her. And still, guess what Mary is?

  212. She's still struggling and she's still a person who is having

  213. doubt and who still feels turmoil.

  214. Though I know he's supposed to. But is he doing it right?

  215. Is it? Was this the way?

  216. I still had an expectation of how he was going to rule and

  217. reign, and it wasn't quite like this.

  218. We don't know all of her inner thoughts.

  219. We just know that they're misguided at this point.

  220. The crowds are massive. He's speaking like he's God.

  221. He's out of his mind. He's out of his mind.

  222. We'll talk to him. We'll go talk to him.

  223. His family is panicked. They came to seize him, to get

  224. him subdued, to get him under control.

  225. There's an urgency for them. They're afraid.

  226. Maybe Mary's knitting group, maybe her friends have been

  227. putting pressure on her, saying, hey, Jesus sounds like he's

  228. getting out of control. Maybe his brothers are being

  229. mocked on the job site, and now he's blowing up the Pharisees

  230. and claiming to be the Messiah and calling out every

  231. hypocritical belief that the people held.

  232. Jesus is not playing nice. Is Jesus good?

  233. Infinitely, perfectly and completely.

  234. He's always only good. But is Jesus being nice?

  235. No, he's not. Sometimes we see Jesus being

  236. nice, but niceness implies that he is, that his primary focus is

  237. to be agreeable, and Jesus primary motive was not to be

  238. agreeable. Jesus's primary motive is to

  239. please the Father. That's his primary motive.

  240. So Jesus says what would please the Father right now?

  241. That's what I want to do. Well, that doesn't please any of

  242. us, Jesus said. I didn't even take that into

  243. account at all. It never even entered my mind.

  244. I was only thinking about what would please the Father right

  245. now. And if it also pleases you, good

  246. for you, but I'm going to do what pleases the Father.

  247. Well, that well, that puts you at odds with the rest of us.

  248. Look what Jesus does here. Your family, your family calls

  249. for you. Some people were uncomfortable

  250. as Jesus is rebuking the Pharisees in this moment as he

  251. tells them that they have committed an unforgivable sin

  252. and that they'll be judged by the Ninevites.

  253. Nineveh's going to rise up to judge you guys.

  254. And people in the room are going, this is weird.

  255. Hey, his family's got what? What?

  256. Jesus? They're like We're saving him

  257. from himself. We're going to help him.

  258. He doesn't know when to shut up, so we're going to help Jesus.

  259. Hey, Jesus, your mom and brothers, why don't you take a

  260. breather? Things got tense in here.

  261. And Jesus, what is he doing that moment?

  262. Who are my mother and my brothers?

  263. Why? Because he knows what the motive

  264. is outside. He knows what's happening.

  265. So he doesn't go. Tell him I'll be there in a

  266. minute. Tell him another 15 minutes.

  267. I'm almost finished with what I'm doing in here.

  268. He double s down. Who's my mother and my brother.

  269. Ouch, Mary. Ouch, Brothers outside who?

  270. I'll tell you who. He points to his 12.

  271. Those who do the will of the Father.

  272. That's my family. Whoa.

  273. It's almost like Jesus is divisive.

  274. Are you starting to get that vibe 12 chapters in to Matthew?

  275. Are you starting to pick up on that?

  276. It's almost like he's always clarifying.

  277. Remember what we've seen over and over.

  278. The big crowds gather. You know what's coming anytime

  279. the crowd starts growing, you know what he's about to do.

  280. He's about to divide. Why doesn't Jesus love

  281. everybody? Absolutely.

  282. He divides for you so you can actually choose him.

  283. He divides so you can make the right choice in that moment and

  284. go. When Jesus, the big crowd goes

  285. and Jesus goes, I know everything here isn't pure.

  286. The bigger it gets, the harder it is to keep it pure.

  287. He goes, I know I'll purify it right now.

  288. And he's, he separates himself. He says I'm coming over here.

  289. The Lord has always done that. Hey, if you're with Moses, go

  290. stand over here. If you're with Cora, go stand

  291. over there. Oh, you have to pick a side, and

  292. then the earth swallows you up if you chose incorrectly.

  293. This is what Jesus is doing. He's dividing.

  294. He's clarifying. Why?

  295. Because he wants to please the Father, He says, who does the

  296. will of the Father? That's my family.

  297. Family. Where?

  298. Where is this principle of family even come from?

  299. It's not an earthly construct. It's a heavenly one.

  300. God is Father, so don't get it twisted.

  301. Don't get it confused. God is Father and then he builds

  302. families on the earth to image who he already is and what he

  303. already wants to do with humanity.

  304. OK, it's the cart that's in front of the horse instead of

  305. the other way around. I said that wrong, didn't I?

  306. Yeah, we want the horse in front of, you know, the thing, to

  307. quote a famous politician, you know the thing, the figure of

  308. speech that we all use all the time.

  309. God is father and then he creates humanity and says this

  310. will be family. I am the father of humanity.

  311. Don't get it confused and think that, oh, we have families on

  312. earth and we have daddies and we have mommies.

  313. You know what? We're going to refer to God as

  314. like a father. That's not how it works.

  315. That would be backwards. That would be, that would be the

  316. cart being in front of the horse instead of the horses.

  317. God is Father and then therefore He establishes things in the

  318. earth to image and to show us who He really is and what He's

  319. really like. So this is the point.

  320. God wanted a family, remember? That was why He started

  321. everything for us anyway. That was what He wanted.

  322. That was His purpose and that was His motive.

  323. God wanted a family, so He created Adam and Eve and he

  324. wanted them to be fruitful and multiply, and we were just

  325. supposed to live happily ever after.

  326. And he walks with us in the cool of the day.

  327. We are getting back to that, by the way.

  328. That's where we started in the very beginning, and that's where

  329. we end. It starts with a family.

  330. It ends with a family and the marriage supper of the Lamb and

  331. Jesus who has rescued his entire bride and the Father is there,

  332. pleased forever, and we are secure forever in the eternal

  333. Kingdom. That's what God's doing.

  334. So this is what Jesus is emphasizing when he's talking

  335. about family. Who is my family?

  336. Does Jesus care about his family?

  337. We know that he does as a priority for a man dying on a

  338. cross. We haven't talked a lot about

  339. the the crucifixion in a while. We talked about it probably last

  340. time, a lot in detail on Good Friday, the details of the

  341. crucifixion, how excruciating and tormenting a crucifixion is.

  342. But Jesus, as he's being crucified, sees to it that his

  343. mother will be cared for. So Jesus isn't violating the

  344. Scriptures and dishonoring his mother.

  345. But Jesus is honoring his father, and that is the

  346. priority. And that is an example for you

  347. and I Why shouldn't dishonor my father and mother?

  348. Of course you shouldn't. But beyond that, you should

  349. always honor your father. So honoring your father always

  350. comes above and beyond your father and mother or your

  351. brother and sister or your son and daughter.

  352. We can be encouraged by this. Well, encouragement might not be

  353. the right word. We can be prepared for this

  354. because Jesus also told us that our enemies would even be in our

  355. own household. He already told us this in

  356. Matthew. He said so.

  357. So enemies can sometimes think that they're being helpful, and

  358. sometimes someone who loves you can play the role temporarily

  359. for the moment of working against you doesn't mean that

  360. they want your downfall, but it means that they're misguided.

  361. So I might be completely sincere in my care for you, but I can be

  362. sincerely wrong. And this is where Mary and the

  363. brothers of Jesus likely are in this moment.

  364. They're feeling the pressures. We're not making excuses for

  365. what is plainly sin, but at the same time we understand it's not

  366. the same guilt as the Pharisees bear.

  367. There is a difference of weight of sin and the Pharisees are is

  368. far greater than what Mary and Jesus's brothers are

  369. experiencing here. So they are sincere, they

  370. believe they're correct, but they are dead wrong back in

  371. Matthew 12, verse 48. But he replied to the man who

    Matthew 12:48

  372. told him, who is my mother, who are my brothers?

  373. And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,

  374. here are my mother and my brothers.

  375. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother

  376. and sister and mother. Jesus's response is also telling

  377. of their motives. They weren't outside saying we

  378. miss him and we were hoping to surprise him.

  379. You know, can you, can you cut him off really quick and let him

  380. know we're here? They want to seize him.

  381. They want to speak to him. They wish to speak to him, when

  382. really they should shut up and listen to him.

  383. This is the problem with the Pharisees and the scribes that

  384. were coming to Jesus. Hey, we wish to say something to

  385. you. That's that's the wrong thing.

  386. When you come to Jesus, you should come to sit at his feet.

  387. You should come to say, I'm going to hang on to every word

  388. that you have to say. But the temptation is always the

  389. same. People want to put Jesus on

  390. trial. Let's put Jesus on trial.

  391. He has to answer for this. He has to answer for that.

  392. People, we put Jesus on trial once and it will never happen

  393. again. And it only happened because he

  394. allowed it. It was a false trial.

  395. It was a foolish trial. It will never happen again.

  396. The next trial will be our own. He will come to judge the living

  397. and the dead. He will speak to us.

  398. We don't instruct the Lord of glory.

  399. The Lord of glory instructs his people.

  400. So you and I don't know what we would have done if we had been

  401. there. So I'm not shaming or blaming

  402. anybody, but we are clearly naming what's good, what's

  403. right, and what's wrong. It's easy for us to look back

  404. with our Bibles and have hindsight and go, if I, if I'd

  405. have been there, tell you what I would have been, I would have

  406. been inside. I would have been one of the 12.

  407. And if he wouldn't have picked me, I'd have been #13 that would

  408. have been able to shake me. That's my hope.

  409. But I thank God I'm here now with the hindsight and and the

  410. will to say, God, keep me faithful to you.

  411. We need to remember that our convictions will not always be

  412. welcomed or applauded. Jesus promised just the

  413. opposite. It's been a hard adjustment, I

  414. think, for the body of Christ to make in our society where

  415. Christendom was the norm. And by Christendom, I don't mean

  416. everyone was Christian, but the influence of Christianity was so

  417. profound, and it still is. People in the West don't realize

  418. that everything good, anything good that's ever happened to any

  419. nation has been the influence of Christianity.

  420. But what about this bad thing? We reject the bad thing.

  421. We call it sin and evil. And also, any good thing that

  422. happened came as the result of God's Kingdom breaking in

  423. through his church. So it's been a hard adjustment

  424. for us to make here in the West in particular, as things have

  425. shifted more and more away from Christendom.

  426. And we don't want just Christendom.

  427. We want the Kingdom of God. We want every heart and soul to

  428. love and follow King Jesus. And also Christendom is better

  429. than secularism. If you had to pick, it's a real

  430. easy choice to make. It's not a, it's not a

  431. complicated one. This is how sometimes we this is

  432. what we talked about last week when we think about our upcoming

  433. election. Who do you pick?

  434. Well, we'll take the lesser of two evils, obviously.

  435. We'll take the slightly better or whatever you consider majorly

  436. better. But still, we're not electing a

  437. king. We already have a king.

  438. His name is Jesus, and we're electing who do we think is

  439. going to best promote righteousness?

  440. That might even be a laughable proposition.

  441. And still we need to make a choice and we need to do what we

  442. think would please the Lord most.

  443. So it's been a hard adjustment for us to make as a society, as

  444. a as a church, but we must make it.

  445. Jesus told us in the Sermon on the Mount.

  446. Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say

  447. all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.

  448. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in

  449. heaven. For so they persecuted the

  450. prophets who were before you. So Christians should have

  451. enemies. If you don't have enemies, you

  452. shouldn't step back and go, why don't I have any enemies?

  453. What's going on here? I was promised that I would.

  454. If I don't have any enemies, does that mean that I'm not

  455. actually representing the truth? Does that mean that I'm not

  456. standing for the truth? This isn't, this isn't a call to

  457. go pick a fight. Jesus just saying, whenever

  458. you're faithful for long enough, you will find a fight.

  459. The fight will find you. You will have to speak up in a

  460. moment when everyone else is silent, and even in a reasonable

  461. moment when it's your mother and brothers.

  462. Hey, hey, hey, hey. It's us.

  463. Hey. I know the Pharisees are crazy.

  464. I know they're giving you a lot of pressure.

  465. Come outside and just talk with us.

  466. That's tempting. That's clever.

  467. Because they're not your enemies.

  468. It's your Mama. She's outside.

  469. Go talk to your Mama. Hey, we're looking out for you.

  470. We're trying to help you here. That's clever.

  471. That one's shifty. What is the will of the Father?

  472. It's important to have your convictions coming from the Word

  473. of God and from a a living relationship with the Holy

  474. Spirit. Jesus told us like we said, our

  475. enemies would be of our own household.

  476. So what do you do when this pressure comes, When your family

  477. pressures you to tone down your zeal for God?

  478. Jesus gives us the example of how to respond.

  479. He double s down. He he brings rebuke to his

  480. family and then establishes what's actually good and best.

  481. What's good and best is everyone who pleases the father.

  482. No, I'm not going to get pulled off.

  483. I talk often when I'm talking about conflict in my in my work

  484. that I do when I'm working with clients, I talk about staying on

  485. the Interstate. When you're engaged with

  486. conflict with someone. Hey, let's stay on the

  487. Interstate. Hey, you know, I want to talk

  488. with you about this thing and and then you say, well, you used

  489. to do this and I go hang on. That's an exit off the

  490. Interstate. I'll own that.

  491. And that's a separate conversation that I'm completely

  492. willing to have. We can even write it down on a

  493. post it note over here and come back to that later.

  494. And yet in this moment, I intend to stay on the Interstate and

  495. not take an exit because what what will happen sometimes is if

  496. you take that exit, you'll find that folks in their flesh, all

  497. of us have this capability. By the way, we have the ability

  498. to take the exit, but we have no intention of hopping right back

  499. on the Interstate. I want to get you on the exit

  500. and then I want to take another turn.

  501. Eventually I'll get you in the backwoods where I can murder you

  502. and win the argument and say ha, ha.

  503. And then you're apologizing to me when the whole time you came

  504. to correct me about something. But now I flipped the whole

  505. thing around, you know, because I have.

  506. What is that? It's flesh.

  507. Now some of you go, whoa, that sounds like me all the time.

  508. Well, then that's that might be more of a stronghold that you

  509. need to be very aware of and you need to repent of it is to be

  510. repented of and confessed. But the point is Jesus doesn't

  511. allow people to pull him off the Interstate.

  512. He says I'm going to stay right here.

  513. And they go, what about this and what about that?

  514. He goes, yeah, I'm staying right here.

  515. We said this. I heard what you said.

  516. I'm saying what I said. I understand your tactic and

  517. your motive is to distract me from what I'm doing.

  518. Saying whenever you have conviction from the Lord to walk

  519. out your obedience to the Lord, no matter what it looks like it

  520. might be bringing rebuke to something that needs rebuke.

  521. It might be. It might look like just your

  522. sweet devotion under the Lord. Will people really rebuke you

  523. for that? Oh, yes, they will.

  524. And I'll show it to you in Scripture in a moment.

  525. People will rebuke you for all kinds of things, loved ones and

  526. family members who are close to you, and they'll go.

  527. Should you really be doing it like that?

  528. No, no, no, I'm with you. No, no, I believe what you

  529. believe. I just wonder if you should be

  530. doing it differently. How are we supposed to know

  531. whether or not we should listen to them?

  532. You gauge it by their own faithfulness.

  533. The person who's coming to you, are they faithful and mature?

  534. If so, I'm all ears. How do you judge if they're

  535. faithful and mature? Do they have enemies?

  536. That's another gauge. Do they have enemies?

  537. Do people hate them for their love and following the way they

  538. love and follow Jesus? So This is why everybody doesn't

  539. get a seat at my table. I mean, everybody gets a seat at

  540. my kitchen table, but everybody doesn't get a seat at the table

  541. of influence in my life because, you know, the work that I do for

  542. a living, I'm on the Internet. So you might imagine I get some

  543. messages sometimes for the work that I do and just for the

  544. Kingdom, the Kingdom preaching that I do.

  545. And then the things I say about men and women in marriage.

  546. I, I tend to hear lots of opinions.

  547. It's just instant dismissal. Instant.

  548. Well, couldn't there be some truth in it?

  549. I don't have time to sift through this septic tank to look

  550. for what might be a gem inside. Why?

  551. I've got plenty of gems in my life who speak into my life.

  552. I have a pastor who's not a coward, who speaks into my life,

  553. who corrects me and who confronts me and says, hey, now

  554. he's very wise. He's way wiser than me.

  555. Like when Pastor Kim corrects me, I don't even realize it till

  556. like the next day. And I'm like, oh man, he's good.

  557. Wow. It's like he set the thing in

  558. there and then the Holy Spirit works on it.

  559. So we surround ourselves with faithful people.

  560. This is not just you living in a silo and you doing everything on

  561. your own. And you might just be an

  562. egotistical blowhard who has convinced yourself that you

  563. actually are faithful to the Lord.

  564. You might just be a moron and you go, nobody loves the Lord

  565. like I do. No, you're actually really

  566. foolish. You're actually just really

  567. obnoxious and you don't know it because you don't have faithful

  568. Saints, mature Saints around you who can speak clear clearly to

  569. you. People who are really doing the

  570. work of the ministry, who also say, hey, brother, I love, I

  571. love your heart. I love your seal.

  572. Hey sister, I'm with you 1000%. And can we discuss this?

  573. And it's someone who you can receive from.

  574. It's someone who has and is bearing good fruit who is going

  575. to come to Jesus in that way? Who can Jesus, who can come and

  576. correct Jesus, who can come to him and go, Hey, we were

  577. thinking maybe you should consider there's there's no one

  578. he, he has, he has his father, he has the Holy Spirit.

  579. He's solid. He doesn't need anyone's help or

  580. or coaching. So doubling down is a good

  581. response when you know you're doing the right thing.

  582. I'll show you another example of family telling you to tone it

  583. down. Turn to Second Samuel.

  584. So this is you're gonna turn to your left, you're gonna go into

  585. your Old Testament if you see kings, if you see first kings or

  586. second kings, you're gonna keep going to the left and then

  587. you're gonna go to Second Samuel.

  588. I wanna remind you to bring your Bibles.

  589. I want to encourage you to bring your Bibles.

  590. The Bible that you read at home is the Bible I want you to bring

  591. on a Sunday morning. It's going to help continue to

  592. familiarize you with Scripture so you can continue to see where

  593. are these verses. The Lord is going to speak to

  594. you. You'll be able to highlight

  595. things, meditate on things. It'll serve you well.

  596. Second Samuel, chapter 6. Then go in verse 12, the Ark of

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  597. the covenant. This is not Noah's ark.

  598. This is a, this is a box. We're not going to go too

  599. detailed here, but it's a box. It was containing the presence

  600. of the Lord. There was much rejoicing, much

  601. honor should have been brought to the Lord through this process

  602. as it was. So whenever you see the word,

  603. the ark being brought in, that's what's being referenced here.

  604. So we're in Second Samuel, chapter 6.

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  605. I'm going to start reading to you from verse 12.

  606. And it was told, King David, the Lord has blessed the household

  607. of Obed Edom with all that belongs to him because of the

  608. ark of God. So the ark was stored at this

  609. guy's house. So now the blessing of the Lord

  610. is just all over this, this man's home.

  611. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the House of

  612. Obed Edom to the city of David with rejoicing.

  613. David didn't just go grab the ark, throw it on his back and

  614. say, hey, let's bring it fully into the city and let's rejoice

  615. over it. This, this parade was bananas.

  616. And when those who bore the ark, I say bananas that made it sound

  617. irreverent. It was not irreverent.

  618. It was incredibly elaborate and Worshipful is the is what I

  619. meant to say they're very elaborate and Worshipful.

  620. And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone 6 steps.

  621. So we got four guys carrying the ark.

  622. We have pole on our shoulders. No one is touching the ark.

  623. Actually, I got touched the ark earlier in the day and he died

  624. because of it. We'll go there some other time.

  625. So we're walking. We take 6 steps.

  626. One 23456 every time. They took 6 steps.

  627. Do you know what happened when those who bore the ark of the

  628. Lord had gone 6 steps? He sacrificed an ox and a fatted

  629. animal. Wow.

  630. Hey, David. No.

  631. I love your zeal, brother. No, no, it's great.

  632. No, no, no. I'm with you.

  633. I love the Lord too. I love the Lord too.

  634. But I think maybe if we could move the parade along and we

  635. could, I don't know, like we don't have to kill that many

  636. animals. Like, it's a lot of steps

  637. between this guy's house and the city.

  638. No, no, I'm with you. No, no, no, no, I love the Lord.

  639. No, no, I'm with you 100 percent, 100%, totally, totally,

  640. totally. But also, let's not do it this

  641. way the way that you feel led to do it, the way you want to honor

  642. the Lord. Don't do it that way.

  643. Don't do it that way. Hey, hey, hey.

  644. I know you want to give that money into that offering.

  645. Hey, I know you want to bless that family.

  646. Hey, I know you want to do this sacrificial thing as a

  647. Christian. I love that about you, but I

  648. think it's but don't do that. I think that's too excessive.

  649. I think that's too much. Hey, I know, I know you know,

  650. you tithe and give offerings, but I think I think you could

  651. reel this thing in some you fill in the blank with maybe, maybe

  652. we don't have any record that anyone objected there, but he

  653. sacrificed an ox and a fatted animal.

  654. Verse 14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might and

  655. David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the House of

  656. Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the

  657. sound of the horn. David danced with all his might

  658. and he was wearing a linen ephod.

  659. So he's wearing a just a simple white linen garment, nothing

  660. fancy, not looking like the king.

  661. He had taken off his kingly robes and he was saying, look,

  662. I'm just another one of the guys who wants to glorify the Lord.

  663. This isn't about King David being here today.

  664. This is about the Lord, the King of glory, getting honor, getting

  665. praise, getting worship. That's a good thing, right?

  666. Go David, Praise the Lord, man. Get after it, brother.

  667. Verse 16, as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David

  668. McCall, the daughter of Saul. This is David's wife.

  669. Remember her when David killed Goliath?

  670. This is the Princess that he gets as a wife.

  671. McCall, the daughter of Saul, looked out the window and saw

  672. King David leaping and dancing before the Lord.

  673. And she despised him in her heart, dear God.

  674. And they brought in the ark of the Lord and set it in its place

  675. inside the tent that David had pitched for it.

  676. And David offered burnt offerings and offered peace

  677. offerings before the Lord. David is having an awesome day.

  678. We're praising the Lord, we're worshiping, He's dancing.

  679. It's joy, joy, joy, joy, honor the Lord.

  680. He is worthy. It's all good.

  681. And when David finish it, offering the burnt offerings,

  682. verse 18, and the peace offerings, he blessed the people

  683. in the name of the Lord of hosts and distributed among all the

  684. people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a

  685. cake of bread, a portion of meat, cake of raisins to each

  686. one. Then all the people departed,

  687. each to his house. He wanted this to be a feast.

  688. This is a celebration. Hey, open the storehouses, open

  689. up everything, distribute, distribute.

  690. The people are coming. They're singing, there's

  691. dancing. It's awesome, as it should be.

  692. David is so excited. And David returned verse 20 to

  693. bless his own household. So now the man of the house

  694. comes home. The king is coming home to his

  695. wife, to his children, to his servants.

  696. What a day. And he wants to bring the same

  697. blessings into his own household as he should, as a godly man

  698. should, bringing his best to his family, Not bringing your scraps

  699. to your family, but giving them your very best.

  700. David returned to bless his household.

  701. But McCall, the daughter of Saul, came out to meet David and

  702. said how the king of Israel honored himself today,

  703. uncovering himself before the eyes of his servants, female

  704. servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers

  705. himself. This is what he's met with.

  706. She's being sarcastic and she's mocking him.

  707. She said. I saw you dancing.

  708. I looked out the window. You didn't have on your kingly

  709. robe. You look like a fool.

  710. You look like everybody else. It was embarrassing.

  711. You look like a joke coming hard at him.

  712. He's going hey, honey, I'm home. The King's ark is Look at you,

  713. Mr. Dancing with the others today looking ridiculous.

  714. And David said to McCall. So notice what McCall said.

  715. You danced before the servants. You danced in front of the

  716. servants. You see how you see how a

  717. twisted heart Miss applies Even what he was doing?

  718. Was David dancing before the servants?

  719. Look, I'm dancing for you. Was that who he was doing it

  720. for? David said to McCall.

  721. It was before the Lord who chose me above your father, and above

  722. all his house, to appoint me as Prince over Israel, the people

  723. of the Lord. And I will celebrate before the

  724. Lord. You know what?

  725. I'll make myself yet more contemptible than this.

  726. I'll be a based in your eyes, but by the female servants of

  727. whom you have spoken. By them I shall be held in

  728. honor. And McCall, the daughter of

  729. Saul, had no child to the day of her death.

  730. Interesting that the Holy Spirit and Samuel would include that

  731. there. So what does David do?

  732. Other translations? Whenever McCall corrects and

  733. rebukes and he says, you think I was undignified today, I will

  734. become even more undignified than this.

  735. You haven't seen anything yet. He double s down.

  736. You think that was bad? I'll do it again.

  737. I'll go outside tonight all by myself.

  738. He's making the point. I will not be pulled away from

  739. the Lord of glory. This wasn't about David.

  740. This wasn't about anybody else but the heart that doesn't see

  741. that. So this is my point.

  742. I proved to you, yes, people will come at you when you bring

  743. strong rebuke and they'll go, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.

  744. I also think that's a bad thing. But I think the way we should go

  745. about it is, oh, the answer to that is always by doing nothing,

  746. by the way, because the people who rebuke you for bringing

  747. rebuke never actually rebuke anything apart from people who

  748. rebuke people. Did you follow that?

  749. It's always the case, unless, of course, it's not and it's Pastor

  750. Kim rebuking me. And then it can be received.

  751. But the majority of the time, Christians who go to other

  752. Christians go, Brother, I, I agree with you.

  753. This thing is wrong and bad, but I don't think you're doing it

  754. right. Here's the question you ask

  755. those people. Oh, OK, show me how you do it.

  756. I'm open. I'm open to instruction here.

  757. Show me how you do it. Oh well I don't do it then.

  758. I'm not open to anything you have to say.

  759. Then you've lost influence with me.

  760. Well that's really prideful of you.

  761. Clever. Nice try, but thankfully I have

  762. safety in my life and mature believers who are wise, who are

  763. godly, who are not cowardly and who are not trying to be friends

  764. with the world. To be friends with the world is

  765. to be enemies with God. Don't be confused.

  766. We should have many non believing friends.

  767. But to be friends with the world is to be friends with the world

  768. system and the God of this world who we hate, the Prince and

  769. power of the air, Satan himself is our enemy.

  770. So see that pressure doesn't just come when you're bringing

  771. fire and brimstone. Pressure can also come when

  772. you're joyfully praising the Lord, happily minding your own

  773. business going. God is so good.

  774. God is so good, people go pipe down with that.

  775. It can come from anything. You need to be prepared.

  776. What do we do? Jesus gives us the example,

  777. David. David gives us the example.

  778. Double down. Like I said, you've you've got

  779. to have the wise protection in your life.

  780. But once you know that you do, you can more happily and quickly

  781. and easily dismiss nonsense. All right, we're going to go

  782. back to Matthew 12. In Matthew 12, we are in verse

  783. 49 now. So we're continuing stretching

  784. out his hand toward his disciples.

  785. He said, here are my mother and my brothers, for whoever does

  786. the will of my father in heaven is my brother and sister and

  787. mother. What a powerful bond that was

  788. building among the disciples, right?

  789. Yeah. They're sitting there and

  790. they're just like, I'm with him. I don't know what he's going to

  791. say next. It gets crazy around here

  792. sometimes, but I'm with him. I don't understand it all when

  793. he says eat your flesh and drink your blood, I don't get that

  794. either. But I'm still with him.

  795. I'm with him, I'm with him. Well, what about your teacher?

  796. I'm with him. Take it up with him.

  797. That's all I know to say. That is such a wise and humble

  798. approach. When you when you feel

  799. pressured, you've got to explain, you've got to justify.

  800. Take it up with Jesus. I've told many people to take it

  801. up with the Lord when they're like, well, you and you and you

  802. and I go, bro, I didn't invent it.

  803. I just read it. Why don't interpret it that way

  804. then interpret it how you want. The king will sort us out of

  805. that much. I'm sure the judge will sort us

  806. out. Me and you both, friend, enemy,

  807. frenemy, whatever you may be. I'm with him.

  808. Jesus is building a great bond among his disciples, saying this

  809. is what it looks like to be my family.

  810. It's to obey the Father, the family of Jesus.

  811. We can determined from this passage the family of Jesus will

  812. obey the Father of Jesus. That's how Jesus knows who his

  813. family is and that's how we know who our family is.

  814. He told us just moments ago up in the passage when he was

  815. rebuking the Pharisees. The tree is known by its fruit.

  816. The tree is known by its fruit. Don't confuse that with the tree

  817. is saved by its fruit. The tree is dead, and Jesus

  818. makes the tree alive. And then the tree is known by

  819. its fruit. It had bad fruit before Jesus

  820. saves it makes it new, and now it has living fruit.

  821. So the tree is not saved by its fruit.

  822. But the tree is known by its fruit.

  823. It is identified by its fruit. And now we're seeing bad fruit

  824. from Mary, the brothers of Jesus.

  825. It's not as bad as what we see from the Pharisees, but he can't

  826. allow it to pull him off of his obedience.

  827. And you've got to have the same kind of wisdom to recognize

  828. what's going on here. This person loves me.

  829. This person cares about me, and yet something ain't right.

  830. The Holy Spirit is telling you that something ain't right.

  831. I can't pinpoint it. You better obey the Lord.

  832. But yeah, but they need me to answer them.

  833. No, they don't. You don't owe an explanation.

  834. You don't owe an answer. If you can't articulate 1.

  835. You just go, Hey, I love you and I think you love me, but in this

  836. thing and this dancing before the Lord moment, or in this

  837. rebuking the Pharisees moment, or in this fill in the blank

  838. moment, I can't go with you on this.

  839. This seems to me to be the will of the Lord and I'm going to

  840. stick with the will of the Lord. They say that blood is thicker

  841. than water, but it's the blood of Jesus that flows through the

  842. body of Christ. It's the blood of Jesus that

  843. flows through the church that's thicker than anything.

  844. That was the point that Jesus was making.

  845. Do we dishonor our families? No way, no how.

  846. They are your first people. They are your closest people and

  847. they should be cared for. And yet the bond in the body of

  848. Christ, and we're going to close and Chris and Kayla are going to

  849. prepare the elements to service communion.

  850. The bond in the body of Christ is something that flows out of

  851. Christ. We are a body.

  852. That's the image that the Holy Spirit chose to use.

  853. So we are connected to each other and most importantly,

  854. we're connected to the head, Jesus.

  855. And that bond is something that is inseparable.

  856. It's something that builds great devotions.

  857. And also we have to be trained and discipled into it.

  858. The body of Christ should have strong bonds.

  859. You should have deep love for the body of Christ.

  860. You should have deep love for your local church, for the

  861. Christians in your life, for the people in this room.

  862. This is this has been a priority for us as a church from day one.

  863. We said that when we were meeting at the Pilot house and I

  864. was saying my intention in planting this church, I want to

  865. plant the church that I want to attend.

  866. And we want to just be a Church of simply New Testament

  867. Christianity, which of course every church would say that and

  868. we commend that. But in particular, we mean we

  869. are going to be up in each other's business.

  870. We intend to be up in each other's lives.

  871. And I said that and I've continued to say that because I

  872. want it to divide. I want it to separate.

  873. So for the folks who are looking for an exclusive Sunday morning,

  874. I just need you to be a preacher man, preacher man.

  875. So go ahead and preach preacher man, if that's all somebody's

  876. looking for. I want them to feel

  877. uncomfortable and convicted in this environment and call to

  878. deeper fellowship with the Saints to say that the body of

  879. Christ was more than for you to come and be something that you

  880. consume. The Church of Jesus is not

  881. something that you come and take from.

  882. The Church of Jesus is something that you are a part of.

  883. So does the hand contribute? Yes, it does.

  884. And does the body contribute to the hand?

  885. Yes, it does. Blood flows into the hand.

  886. It is. It is a reciprocal love

  887. relationship all throughout the body.

  888. But we've often missed that. The Western church misses that

  889. and we become a consumer church. She goes, what do you have to

  890. offer me? Well, we got YouTube worship.

  891. How about that? Are you impressed yet?

  892. No, you know, we set up our chairs with bicycles and AYMCA

  893. and, you know, weights and junk around us.

  894. Are you impressed yet? We got nothing to offer you

  895. except Jesus and the fellowship of the Saints.

  896. If that's what you're in for, then we're all in with you.

  897. If you're looking for if you're looking for more, I don't know

  898. that we'll have it. We want to be hospitable.

  899. We want to be loving, but the bonds in the body of Christ,

  900. that's enough. That's enough.

  901. So we have to train westernism out of us.

  902. By the way, let me clarify. I want us to have a beautiful

  903. building. I want us to have our own

  904. property. I want to build something

  905. gorgeous that we love to worship in.

  906. I want all of that. So don't don't hear things that

  907. I'm not saying, but I am saying what I am saying.

  908. So there's a lot of lot of good that can be enjoyed there.

  909. But the point is the body of Christ is what makes it.

  910. If we had nowhere to meet, we would gather in a field.

  911. We would, we would figure it out.

  912. Why? Because that's what the church

  913. is. The church is the gathered body

  914. of Jesus. So I'm the church all by myself.

  915. No, you're actually not. The church literally means the

  916. gathered people of God. So it is the gathered body of

  917. Christ that is the Church of Jesus Christ.

  918. I want to be in the family of God.

  919. How can I know I am? Jesus said, do the will of the

  920. Father. Jesus said that's how we know.

  921. That's the fruit that tells us what's going on, not perfectly,

  922. but faithfully. So we are the body of Christ, We

  923. are connected to each other. We are family if God is your

  924. father. But the dangerous thing is to

  925. see, like with Mary and the brothers of Jesus in this

  926. moment, you can be inside a Christian family and still be

  927. outside of Christ. They're literally the mother of

  928. Christ and the brothers of Christ.

  929. And they were still, the Scripture made it plain with the

  930. language. They were outside.

  931. Why would you be outside if Jesus is inside?

  932. Jesus outside. I want to be outside.

  933. Wherever Jesus is is where I want to be.

  934. You can be inside a Christian Church and still be outside of

  935. Christ. There's nothing magical about

  936. these chairs or this room or listening to sermons that are

  937. faithful. So you can be close but still be

  938. outside. You can be in a building in a

  939. Christian family, but still be outside of Christ.

  940. How do I make my salvation Sure? Well, only Jesus makes salvation

  941. sure, and y'all can begin to service the elements.

  942. Only Jesus makes salvation sure. Or where does my confidence come

  943. from? Your confidence if you're a

  944. believer, I don't intend to. I don't intend to plant seeds of

  945. doubt inside of you. But if you feel unsure, if your

  946. confidence feels shaky, how how do you build that confidence?

  947. You do so by fellowship with the Father, fellowship with Christ,

  948. and fellowship with the Saints. That looks like the word of God.

  949. That looks like prayer. That looks like all the

  950. spiritual disciplines we would refer to often.

  951. They don't save us, but they build our fellowship.

  952. If I felt distance with Natalie, I wouldn't say I wonder if I'm

  953. still married. Are we still married?

  954. Yeah, we're still married. But maybe I've been traveling

  955. too much, and maybe we haven't been having soulful, quality

  956. time together, hanging out and talking.

  957. Maybe we've been busy and distracted.

  958. Maybe fellowship needs to be strengthened.

  959. So if that's where you're at, you say, I know I love the Lord,

  960. I know I'm saved, but I still feel distance.

  961. And sermons like this still make me feel this insecurity in this

  962. fear. That is a conviction from the

  963. Holy Spirit intended to draw you closer.

  964. Do not drive away today and go, man, I felt convicted today.

  965. The end. Conviction has a purpose, but

  966. it's dangerous to keep swatting it away.

  967. This is a family that's irksome and I'll just man, that keeps

  968. coming up. That is the grace of God.

  969. That is your God who loves you saying hey, hey, hey, let's get

  970. together. Let's build this thing.

  971. Let's do this thing for real. Really follow me, really walk

  972. with me. I love you, son.

  973. I love you, daughter.
