  1. Matthew 15 verse 21, that's where we are.

    Matthew 15:21

  2. We have finally come to the only passage and the only time where

  3. Jesus says no to somebody. I've been telling you about it

  4. from Matthew chapter 1. I love to emphasize it because

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  5. it's, it's, it's quite ironic, I think in the setting of the

  6. Gospel, like I've told you before, if I was to map out my

  7. own year of preaching, even though I, I know how important

  8. healing is and I believe in it, I would never put as many

  9. healing sermons in a year as the gospels actually force you to

  10. preach on healing because they go, OK, that's way too much

  11. healing. Except that the gospels do

  12. emphasize healing that much, which is funny because we're

  13. actually going to go from this passage.

  14. And then right after this, again, guess what happens after

  15. he heals this woman's daughter? Surprise, he heals a ton more

  16. people after that. So next week we're going to have

  17. specifically a Christmas sermon, but after that will continue

  18. again. So it's one of my favorite

  19. passages. It's surprising because instead

  20. of becoming evidence that God does not want to save, instead

  21. of becoming evidence that God does not want to heal, instead

  22. of becoming evidence that God does not want to deliver, or

  23. instead of showing that God's promises come to us

  24. automatically, it's actually more evidence that our own faith

  25. has a necessary role to play in receiving from God.

  26. Not going to have any biblical gymnastics for you today.

  27. Not going to get fancy. Don't have any slick preacher

  28. moves. We're going to read out loud and

  29. we're going to see Yep, Yep, Yep.

  30. And we're going to go through it verse by verse together.

  31. I want to give you some context though.

  32. For context, we're, we're almost certainly in our Lord's last 12

  33. months on the earth before his crucifixion and before his

  34. resurrection. It's probably safe to say we're

  35. even in his last six months or less.

  36. That might be surprising because you're going, man, we're only in

  37. chapter 15, but it goes to 28. Well, when you get to verse,

  38. when we get to chapter 21, we're in his last seven days.

  39. So the whole, so verse 21 is the triumphal entry on Palm Sunday

  40. and then everything else we're getting detailed day by day,

  41. play by play of his last week in Jerusalem.

  42. So it's, you know, we're kind of, we're kind of we get, you

  43. know, 20 chapters of, you know, he of three years and then we

  44. get, you know, 7 chapters of just seven days.

  45. So it really breaks it down. And then, and then we only get a

  46. couple of moments of his post resurrection, you know, because

  47. remember he was here for another 40 days after his resurrection,

  48. but we don't get a lot of that. So our context lets us know that

  49. his timing, where He is, and what he's doing from from

  50. chapter 21 to 28. Like I said, we'll see his last

  51. week, but what is he doing with His time right now?

  52. It's going to be interesting when you see it.

  53. So you're in chapter 15, verse 21.

  54. And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of

  55. Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman

  56. from that region came out and was crying.

  57. Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David, my daughter is severely

  58. oppressed by a demon. But he did not answer her a

  59. word. And his disciples came and

  60. begged him, saying, Send her away, for she's crying out after

  61. us. He answered, I was sent only to

  62. the lost sheep of the House of Israel.

  63. But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord help me.

  64. And he answered, it is not right to take the children's bread and

  65. throw it to the dogs. She said, yes, Lord, yet even

  66. the dogs eat crumbs that fall from their master's table.

  67. Then Jesus answered her whole woman, great is your faith, be

  68. it done for you as you desire. And her daughter was healed

  69. instantly. God, we thank you so much for

  70. your compassion and for your wisdom.

  71. You know what we need when we need it, and You're always right

  72. on time. I pray that light and revelation

  73. would come to your church today. I pray that I would make the

  74. appropriate and right applications with your word.

  75. That we would see exactly what You intend for US, open up more

  76. of the treasures of Christ for us, Lord.

  77. That we would love Him more, that we would know Him better,

  78. that we would be more thankful and even more Worshipful.

  79. And I pray that you would build our faith for all that you have

  80. intended for us to receive from you.

  81. And not only as receivers, but as ministers that we would carry

  82. out the gospel message in power to heal the sick, to raise the

  83. dead, to cast out demons, to do the works that you did in

  84. greater works because you've gone into the Father and now

  85. sent the Holy Spirit to fill us and equip us for ministry.

  86. We thank you for it all in Jesus name, Amen.

  87. So where is Jesus going? The Scripture tells us he is

  88. leaving Israel and he goes to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  89. So what do we know about these places?

  90. You may remember them from Matthew Chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  91. I'm going to quote to you from Matthew Chapter 11, verse 21

    Matthew 11:21

  92. says then he began to denounce the cities where most of his

  93. mighty works had been done because they did not repent.

  94. Do you remember that Jesus dropping bombs and and

  95. condemning these cities where he's been doing all these

  96. miracles among all of his own people.

  97. And then he steps out of the scene and he's going, you will

  98. be judged harshly. Capernaum, will you be lifted

  99. up? No, you won't.

  100. This is the very city where that had the honor of saying King

  101. Jesus lays his head here, he rests here, he ministers here,

  102. his headquarters is here. And are they?

  103. Did they build their whole culture around him like this is

  104. the moment? No.

  105. So he rebukes them for it. He says, Woe to you, Cherizen,

  106. woe to you, Bethsaida. For if the mighty works done and

  107. you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented

  108. long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more

  109. bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  110. That's heavy. And you, Capernaum, will you be

  111. exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to

  112. Hades. For if the mighty works done and

  113. you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this

  114. day. But I tell you that it will be

  115. more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom

  116. than for you. So Jesus has earlier rebuked

  117. certain cities in Israel. But why?

  118. Because they were unbelieving. They were saying, well, we'll

  119. receive those who received received.

  120. But largely there was not repentance.

  121. Largely there was not faithfulness.

  122. Largely there was not love for him.

  123. And now he has gone to Tyron Sidon, these cities that he

  124. clearly showed is like, let me let me try and communicate to

  125. these people some some scummy place with some scummy people.

  126. He references Sodom. They go, Oh, yeah, but Capernaum

  127. and the Capernaites who would have looked at, looked at Sodom

  128. be like, we're so much better than them.

  129. He says it'll be better for them on the day of judgement than for

  130. you. Really.

  131. Don't you know what's happening in Sodom?

  132. Don't you know why it was destroyed?

  133. That wasn't happening in Capernaum.

  134. No, a much greater sin was happening in Capernaum.

  135. The direct rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ to his face.

  136. I thought that was filthy. It was bad enough that the Lord

  137. destroyed it with fire from heaven, and yet it's not as bad

  138. as it gets. It gets way worse to reject the

  139. Lord of glory when He has come to show you His great grace and

  140. mercy, when you meet Him with pride and arrogance or

  141. stubbornness and hard heartedness, that's going to be

  142. a real problem for you. So these low places, Jesus has

  143. now left Israel. So when we're looking at Israel,

  144. it's kind of, if you bear with me, a little bit of a standing

  145. up rectangle generally. So Tyre and Sidon are on the on

  146. the north of Israel. So he is, he's left, he's

  147. hundreds of miles from Jerusalem at this point and he's gone to

  148. visit Tyre and Sidon up until this point.

  149. What have we seen in the scriptures?

  150. We've seen a desperate father plead for his child, the leader

  151. of a synagogue. He was a devout Jew whose

  152. daughter died. He was tested, but Jesus told

  153. him, don't be afraid, just believe.

  154. We've seen another father plead for his son.

  155. He asked Jesus if you can do anything, Lord.

  156. And Jesus quickly corrected the man's if and changed it to no,

  157. no, no if you can believe. And now we see a desperate

  158. mother, tested, seemingly ignored by Jesus, then told no

  159. by Jesus to ultimately receive her victory from Jesus again,

  160. He's gone to a dark place, a wicked region, cities that are

  161. not Jewish. These are not Jewish people.

  162. So the disciples, it's very possible and also very likely

  163. that they've never been here before.

  164. It's very possible and very likely that until the Lord takes

  165. them out of Israel, that they've never been out of Israel.

  166. They're Jewish boys and they've been around Jewish people.

  167. They're they're very young as well, likely teenagers, probably

  168. 20. How do we determine these

  169. things? Well, we determine these things

  170. because we just know what history tells us about rabbis

  171. and how they who they would call unto themselves.

  172. So it's possible maybe Peter was the oldest, you know, Peter was

  173. married, but still they might be on field trip with Jesus going

  174. Jesus, our mom's not going to want us to be here entire

  175. inside. And we've never seen anything

  176. like this. We haven't been in places like

  177. this before. And Jesus says, this is where I

  178. choose to go and this is where I want to be now.

  179. So here they are in this situation, and we're in verse

  180. 22. Behold, a Canaanite woman from

  181. that region came out and was crying.

  182. So Canaanite, not a Jewish woman, she cries out, shouting,

  183. pleading, have mercy on me. O Lord, son of David, my

  184. daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.

  185. The Jewish audience, remember who Matthew wrote to.

  186. Matthew's primary first audience, the letter he wrote

  187. was to the Jews. So he's saying, hey, Jews

  188. remember all these prophecies and they're going, yeah.

  189. And he goes, Jesus fulfilled it. And they go interesting.

  190. So over and over Matthew keeps showing the Jewish reader, but

  191. this shouldn't be lost on us either.

  192. With this Canaanite non Jew woman is using messianic Jewish

  193. language to honor the Lord Jesus Christ.

  194. So the Jewish audience wouldn't miss this.

  195. We shouldn't miss it either. She calls him Lord.

  196. First of all, that term could have been used in a lot of

  197. contexts. It could certainly apply to God,

  198. but it could also apply to anyone who you would want to

  199. just come underneath and to, to just show submission to

  200. acknowledge their authority. So, so far, so good, but it's

  201. not as perfect as it could be yet because we don't know.

  202. Are you just being respectful to the rabbi or are you, do you

  203. understand the Lord that you're actually talking to?

  204. Thankfully, she goes farther and she clarifies the whole thing.

  205. She says son of David. Now that's different.

  206. You've just communicated something much of oh, Mr. so and

  207. so. OK, there's a lot of Mr. so and

  208. so's in the world. Son of David.

  209. That's interesting. That ain't nothing.

  210. That's something to be the son of David is what it is to be

  211. David's descendant. To be a descendant of David is

  212. to be the king of Israel. And specifically son of David is

  213. language that is referencing the Messiah.

  214. She's saying, I know who you are and I am coming to you in that

  215. way. I'm not saying, hey, I hear

  216. you're the Jewish rabbi who does magic tricks.

  217. Could I please have a magic trick?

  218. She's heard testimonies, She's heard something.

  219. That's how faith comes by hearing about the word or

  220. hearing the word of God. So now she knows like he's here,

  221. he came all the way here. Well, he's my answer.

  222. I'm going to go to the son of David, to the Messiah and to the

  223. Savior of the world. What are we seeing here?

  224. Well, Jesus is always king, but who he is to you will determine

  225. what he does for you. Amen.

  226. He's always king, but the question is, is he your king?

  227. She's saying I know who you are and I honor you appropriately

  228. Already we're seeing and and we need to recognize that

  229. everything's not happening automatically.

  230. Do you think there were a lot of people who had need and Tyron

  231. Sidon? I mean, all throughout is, but

  232. it's kind of crazy that, you know, this long into his

  233. ministry that there's anybody left who needs healing.

  234. I mean, when you read over and over, it's like in thousands

  235. came and he healed them all and you're like, dude, what did that

  236. look like? What did that day look like?

  237. I mean, did he just wave his arm?

  238. Did he do one at a time? I mean, we get plenty of certain

  239. instances laid out throughout the gospels where where we see

  240. him healing different people in different ways.

  241. Sometimes he spits in the dirt, makes mud and rubs it in your

  242. eyes. Sometimes it it looks different.

  243. You never know what's coming. Sometimes he just touches you.

  244. Sometimes he just speaks. But healing all these people,

  245. How many people had a need but didn't receive?

  246. But how many people came to Christ with their need and then

  247. didn't receive? You see, today we finally come

  248. to our answer. It's 0.

  249. Was she tested? Absolutely she was tested.

  250. Will your faith be tested even by the Lord?

  251. It is absolutely and entirely possible that the Lord will test

  252. you. I don't have time today to

  253. unpack how I'm how I want to distinguish between trials and

  254. tests. That's just language that I use

  255. just for the sake of understanding, whereas I

  256. categorize trials. I said I don't have time.

  257. Here we go. I categorize trials more of this

  258. thing was intended to destroy you.

  259. This thing is happening because the world is broken.

  260. The devil is bad and you're stupid.

  261. Or I typically say where I'm stupid times a little more

  262. offensive than talking about you now.

  263. So the trial, the tribulation, this is something's going wrong

  264. and it's not supposed to, but it is because things are broken.

  265. This thing is harming me and it's and it's whole mission, or

  266. maybe it's not even having a mission, but it is just, it's

  267. not a lesson from the Lord. This is just this thing's

  268. happening and it's bad, it's difficult and it's terrible.

  269. Can the Lord get me through it? Of course he can and he will.

  270. Then there's something else called a test and I categorize

  271. this as this is the Lord's deliberate and personal test for

  272. his servant, for his servant, for his servants advantage and

  273. for his servants blessing. What's an example?

  274. God tested Abraham, I want you to sacrifice Isaac.

  275. That's a test. That's not Isaac got ran over by

  276. an ox cart and broke his leg and now Abraham's like, I'm not sure

  277. what we're going to do about that's the world is broken and

  278. bad things happen. Lord, will you heal my son?

  279. This is different though. God is testing Abraham and says,

  280. will you give me Isaac? Will you sacrifice your son for

  281. me? That's a test.

  282. And he goes, well, he was the promised son.

  283. But Abraham obeys the Lord, and of course, he still receives the

  284. fullness of his promise. And ultimately Isaac isn't

  285. sacrificed. So the Lord is testing this

  286. woman. The Lord will test your faith as

  287. well. What else do we see is going on

  288. here about this woman? This woman understands good and

  289. evil. She comes to the good to be rid

  290. of the evil. Simple stuff.

  291. Thank you pastor. Obvious demons are still

  292. oppressing people today. Demons are still possessing

  293. people today. They have no authority over

  294. God's people and we are commanded to drive them out

  295. under the authority of Jesus. Remember the disciples have

  296. already cast demons out. They came back rejoicing.

  297. They said even the demons obey us in your name.

  298. And Jesus responded very unimpressed and he said don't

  299. rejoice because demons obey you. It's not a big deal.

  300. Rejoice because your names are written in the Lamb's book of

  301. life. Rejoice because your names are

  302. written in heaven. That's why you should rejoice.

  303. Of course demons obey you guys. What else would they do?

  304. Did you minister in my name? Do you go in my authority?

  305. Yes, Lord. OK.

  306. Like again, it's it's not a big deal.

  307. It's like your children coming in and say, look, I killed a

  308. spider. Like of course you did.

  309. You're big. They're small.

  310. You stepped on them. This is the perspective that the

  311. Christian should have. And yet often times we need to

  312. grow in this area of ministry. In the West, a lot of our demon

  313. possessed people are put in mental institutions.

  314. A lot of them are in prison. And then often times anyone

  315. who's left, we categorize it almost always exclusively as

  316. mental illness. Mental illness is a thing.

  317. The brain could be sick just like the body could be sick.

  318. And also demon possession seems to be a common thing in the

  319. scriptures. So I think we could sometimes be

  320. naive and go, well, what's your perspective on all that, Pastor?

  321. Well, I'm not naive enough to say there's a demon behind every

  322. door. And I'm not naive enough to say

  323. that there's not. That's my perspective on the

  324. supernatural. And I'm not, I'm not naive and I

  325. don't care what anyone thinks. I know it's sometimes it's

  326. popular as Christians be like, everything's not supernatural.

  327. Yeah. OK.

  328. And then other times you could err on the other side.

  329. We go, everything's natural, like it is what it is, literally

  330. whatever it is, it is. And what I need is wisdom to

  331. know how to walk and how to move and how to minister in that

  332. circumstance. And the Lord wants to bring

  333. that. So this woman understands good

  334. and evil. She comes to the good to be rid

  335. of the evil. She cries out, have mercy on me.

  336. O Lord, son of David, my daughter is severely oppressed

  337. by a demon. Verse 23.

  338. But he did not answer her a word.

  339. Why is the Lord ignoring this woman?

  340. He didn't answer her. Please, please, please help me.

  341. Lord Son of David, I know who you are.

  342. I know you're the Messiah. Why didn't he answer?

  343. Doesn't he love this woman? Doesn't he love her daughter?

  344. Doesn't Jesus? Didn't he come to destroy the

  345. works of the devil? Hasn't he come to set the

  346. captive free? Hasn't he come to give abundant

  347. life? Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes.

  348. He's shown His nature and His character repeatedly, and He

  349. reveals it here again. But we see even more of our

  350. Lord's ways and even more of His wisdom in this moment.

  351. The Lord is testing this woman, and the Lord is testing her

  352. faith, testing her for what is the question?

  353. The Lord is testing for sincerity.

  354. The Lord tests for hunger. The Lord tests for depth.

  355. The Lord tests for faithfulness. There are all kinds of reasons

  356. that the Lord would test. Like we said throughout

  357. Scripture, we see the Lord test certain individuals.

  358. Why does He do it? The Lord tests to draw out

  359. someone's best. He tests to purify something.

  360. He says there's some gold there, but I want to strengthen it.

  361. I want to make sure there's no impurities.

  362. So he applies the heat and he applies the heat, and he applies

  363. the heat and the gold liquefies. And what happens?

  364. The impurities float to the top. And the Lord says, ah, this is

  365. pure. This is stronger than ever now.

  366. It is a gift to the gold. It is a gift to you when the

  367. Lord tests your faith. It is a gift to Abraham when the

  368. Lord tests his faith. It's a gift to Moses when the

  369. Lord tests him. You look at the Lord, he's not

  370. flighty, but he is testing his people.

  371. So he tells, he tells Moses, that's it.

  372. I'm going to kill them all. I'm sick of them.

  373. I'm mad at them and I'm going to kill him and Moses, like Lord,

  374. Lord, Lord, like, hang on, let's, let's, let's think this

  375. out for a second. You know, I don't want everybody

  376. to say about you that, you know, you have delivered them from

  377. Egypt, but you weren't strong enough to deliver them into the

  378. promised land. And Lord, the other thing is

  379. like, if you're going to kill them, then kill me first.

  380. And the other thing, So what's he doing?

  381. Was the Lord angry at his people?

  382. Absolutely. He was angry at His people.

  383. There's a lot of evidence that he was angry at his people.

  384. And still, what's he doing? He's strengthening his servant.

  385. He's strengthening and testing Moses.

  386. He is growing and maturing Moses.

  387. Why? Because Moses is going to need

  388. it. Moses, buddy, you're at the

  389. beginning of the beginning. I bet Moses is was probably glad

  390. in that moment when he comes down off the mountain after

  391. meeting with the living God and coming down with his law to find

  392. the people worshipping false gods once again that they were

  393. just delivered from. They're going, we're having a

  394. godless wicked festival to celebrate a golden calf.

  395. And God's going, I'm going to kill him.

  396. And Moses going, no, no, no. And the Lord goes, let me

  397. strengthen my servant, I'm going to kill him, Moses.

  398. No, Lord, don't do that. And building the heart of a

  399. shepherd inside of Moses even more, because he's going to,

  400. He's got a lot of shepherding ahead of him.

  401. You're at the beginning, Moses. You're at the beginning also.

  402. You're not going to go into the Promised land personally because

  403. of your own sin. But he doesn't tell him

  404. everything at once. What's he doing?

  405. He's strengthening the spine of a servant, building his

  406. conviction, building his resiliency.

  407. The Lord is faithful to deliver, and he reminds him.

  408. What does he remind the Lord of? His own word.

  409. Of his own word, Remember, Lord, which you said to Abraham and

  410. Isaac and Israel. Remember, Lord, what's he

  411. reminding me? Did the Lord forget his word?

  412. No. What is this?

  413. This is friendship. This is the this is the one who

  414. walks with God. And this is what the Lord is

  415. looking for. He's looking for fellowship and

  416. friendship. But Moses was being tested.

  417. So the Lord does test to draw out someone's best wise parents.

  418. You've done this with your children.

  419. You challenge your children's thinking.

  420. They say something, it might even be good and true.

  421. But what do you do? You, you, you come at them with

  422. an angle that you know they're going to be hit with at some

  423. point in their lives at some point in the future.

  424. And they say, well, I think this and you go, I share their

  425. conviction. I believe what they believe.

  426. I'm glad they believe it. But I, I question how much

  427. foundation there is under it. I question if they know why they

  428. believe it. So I do this to my boys all the

  429. time. I hear them say something and I

  430. go, is there are there roots under there or or is that are

  431. they mimicking daddy and mommy? Praise God for that.

  432. I want that. That's a good thing, not sorry

  433. for that. And also let me make sure the

  434. foundation is properly there. I don't want them to just match

  435. the paint color. I want them to have the

  436. foundation that needs to be in place.

  437. So I'll ask a question that'll sometimes trouble them.

  438. They go, what's he saying? Is he on my side or not?

  439. I'm just going stand on your own 2 feet.

  440. You got this. Do you know where this leads?

  441. Do you know what this means? What am I doing?

  442. I'm testing my sons to strengthen my sons.

  443. It's for their good. I believe what they believe.

  444. I want what they want for the reason that they want it.

  445. But I still want them to be strengthened and to be grown

  446. through it. So you might do that to to even

  447. represent views other than your own temporarily, but you're

  448. doing this with skill and with love, to test them, to purify

  449. them, to strengthen them, and to reveal a more complete truth to

  450. them. Our God does the same for us.

  451. And this is what Jesus is doing for this woman.

  452. He is drawing her out and he is drawing her in.

  453. Jesus has done this over and over and over.

  454. We've seen it throughout the Scriptures.

  455. He makes an extreme and polarizing statement.

  456. Why? To divide and to sift.

  457. Well, I don't want to be divided in the bad direction.

  458. Good news. You get to cast your vote in

  459. which direction you're divided onto.

  460. You get to pick. The Lord didn't say I'm cutting

  461. the line right here. The Lord said I'm setting the

  462. standard. What will you do with the

  463. standard? Well, I'm walking away.

  464. Eat my flesh and drink my blood. This is a hard saying.

  465. Who can bear it? I'm out of here.

  466. It's yours. That's your vote to cast.

  467. It's your loss, but it's your vote to cast instead.

  468. What does he want? He wants you to be drawn in.

  469. He did put up a barrier though, because they literally didn't

  470. know what he was talking about when he said you have to eat my

  471. body and drink my blood. They thought he meant eat his

  472. body and drink his blood. They thought he meant

  473. cannibalism. So in all fairness to them.

  474. And yet Peter and the 12 going. I don't know what that means.

  475. Are you leaving too? It's a great time.

  476. If you guys wanted to leave, where would we go?

  477. You have the words of life. That's the right answer.

  478. And because you're sticking around, you'll get to hear the

  479. full truth unpacked. You'll actually share that meal

  480. with me, my last meal, where I turn the message of Israel into

  481. the cup of the new covenant in my blood.

  482. And they'll go, oh, will you stick with him long enough?

  483. Will you walk with him? Will you press in when he goes?

  484. Here's the standard and go. I have to step around that.

  485. You're not getting away from me, Lord.

  486. Like Elijah with Elijah. Elijah tested him.

  487. He's he's following the prophet. He's following he, he.

  488. So Elijah is the prophet. He has Elijah his helper.

  489. Jah and Shah, That's what we confer to them henceforth.

  490. So Jah tells Shah, you follow me.

  491. And he goes, OK, I'm following you.

  492. I'm welcome with you. And then it's revealed that Jah

  493. is going to be carried up and JA tests Shah and tells him, hey,

  494. why don't you go do this? Why don't you go do something

  495. else? And Elijah says, there's no

  496. chance, there's no way in this world that you'll be caught up

  497. into heaven without me standing there.

  498. I will be present with you until the end.

  499. And Elijah goes, settle for yourself.

  500. Do whatever you're going to do. He's not going make sure you

  501. stick with me. Make sure you get a double

  502. portion of the anointing. Make sure you get my mantle on

  503. you. Make sure, make sure, make sure,

  504. make sure you do what you're going to do.

  505. I'm going to do what I'm going to do.

  506. What is that? That's a test to purify, to draw

  507. in, to pull closer, not to push away.

  508. This is what the test of the Lord does.

  509. Notice when it's a test of the Lord, there's always reward.

  510. There's always reward. There's always blessing, trials

  511. and tribulations. Sometimes it's just like, well,

  512. that was miserable and I'm glad it's over.

  513. That wasn't a test from the Lord.

  514. Then a test from the Lord is I am purifying you deliberately to

  515. reward you and strengthen you continually.

  516. That's how I categorize those. Again, we can't do a full unpack

  517. on that today. Still in verse 23, he did not

  518. answer her a word. Why?

  519. Because he's testing her and his disciples came and begged him

  520. saying send her away for she's crying out after us.

  521. So his disciples, they've seen it all before.

  522. They know exactly what's about to happen here.

  523. They've got a track record with Jesus for years now.

  524. They know literally every single person who's ever come to him

  525. for anything has received from him.

  526. So they know, they know something's going on here.

  527. We don't know what he's doing, but can you send her away?

  528. She's annoying. We're not supposed to be hanging

  529. around Canaanite women. We're good Jewish boys, whatever

  530. their motive was like, can you just, can we get her out of

  531. here? We were, we were having a meal.

  532. We were doing whatever we were doing in this house.

  533. And now she barges in. She's not going to shut up.

  534. Can you just send her? Lord, compassionate disciples

  535. that they are, Can you just get this over with more quickly?

  536. Get her out of here so she'll leave us alone.

  537. Verse 24 And he answered, so he's answering them.

  538. I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.

  539. That's interesting because what he's doing is he's making the

  540. test more difficult for her. He's been ignoring her and now

  541. she hears him say to the disciples like she's not even

  542. standing there potentially. I was sent to the lost House of

  543. Israel. Boys, you know this.

  544. What's he doing? Testing her, drawing her in?

  545. But it's an interesting statement because he says I will

  546. send only the lost House of Israel, which makes which makes

  547. all of us go wait a second. I seem to remember a certain

  548. centurion. I seem to remember a certain

  549. Roman killer, a Roman oppressor who you blessed his servant and

  550. you rewarded his faith. So really, Lord, what?

  551. You were only sent to the lost House of Israel.

  552. Our Lord comes first to Israel, but thankfully not only to

  553. Israel, which is why he'll soon be telling his disciples to go

  554. into all the world and make more disciples, which of course is

  555. how you and I got here as non Jews today.

  556. And by the way, do you remember what impressed Jesus with the

  557. Roman centurion faith? I haven't found faith like this

  558. even in Israel. So that was his complaint about

  559. everybody else. My own people don't believe.

  560. And you got these outsiders coming and going.

  561. I know who you are. I know who you are.

  562. I know your nature and character.

  563. How? How?

  564. They don't know the Scriptures like the Jews do, but they know

  565. enough about God somehow, some way.

  566. And they have a trust and an expectation.

  567. And by their faith they're placing a demand on Him.

  568. They won't be shunned. They won't be dismissed.

  569. This woman certainly will not be dismissed so easily.

  570. She is not put off at all by what the Lord is saying, But

  571. Jesus does here what he's done many times, says something

  572. divisive, says something polarizing, so that the hungry

  573. and the humble will press in further.

  574. He knows that some will turn away.

  575. He doesn't want them to. But that is the test.

  576. Remember, go sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and

  577. come follow me. What's the motive?

  578. Did he offer that guy ultimate treasure?

  579. Ultimate treasure? This guy could have been a

  580. disciple of Jesus and walked with the Lord throughout his

  581. ministry. Come on, like how insane is it?

  582. But he went away sad because he had a lot of money in his bank

  583. account. He thought he had great wealth

  584. and he hung on to his dung. He hung on to the refuse, He

  585. hung on to the trash when he could have walked with the King.

  586. And he thought, well, that's a big sacrifice for me.

  587. No, it's not. You can't sacrifice for Jesus.

  588. In one sense you can, because you can feel pain and

  589. crucifixion of the flesh. But in the other sense, you and

  590. I could never sacrifice for the Lord, because sacrifice implies

  591. loss. You and I can never lose.

  592. When we choose Him, we always gain, we always get better, and

  593. we always get more. So go sell everything you have.

  594. Give to the poor. Come follow me.

  595. The Lord's motive is to refine. The Lord's motive is to clarify.

  596. The Lord's motive is to strengthen what's already there.

  597. You're hanging around the teacher, you're hanging around

  598. the rabbi. Will you press in to really be a

  599. disciple or are you content with, I'd like to hear a sermon

  600. every now and then from the Lord.

  601. But you know, I'm not like devoted, like, you know, Jesus

  602. person or something, like I'm not going to go off the deep

  603. end. So where does she do when she

  604. hears, Oh, he's only come for the law.

  605. First he ignored me, and now he's clarified why he's ignoring

  606. me. Oh, he's only come for the lost

  607. House of Israel. Keep going.

  608. Verse 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, Lord help

  609. me, What is she? So Jesus ignores she's, she's

  610. speaking. He speaks and now she comes and

  611. kneels before him, bowing down before him.

  612. Lord help me. That is a good posture and that

  613. is a good prayer. Let's see where it gets her.

  614. Verse 26 and he answered, it is not right to take the children's

  615. bread and throw it to the dogs. So here we have a woman in the

  616. floor begging in front of Jesus. And what analogy does he make?

  617. What reference does he draw? He refers to dogs.

  618. So there's some, there is some important clarification to make

  619. here because it seems like the Barb goes really deep here, but

  620. actually it's actually a kindness that he's showing.

  621. So the Jews often times referred to non Jews as dogs.

  622. There was two different words that you could use for a dog. 1

  623. is like the mangy, wandering, roaming lost dog.

  624. This is The Dirty, filthy one that you go get out of here, you

  625. mutt. Nobody knows you, nobody owns

  626. you, nobody loves you. You're filthy.

  627. The other dog is the beloved house pet.

  628. So non Jews know that many Jews refer to them as dogs in the

  629. racial sense. Like we're better than you.

  630. You're a bunch of dogs. That's not the one that Jesus

  631. uses here. Instead, he uses the the warmer

  632. tone. So Jesus is not using a

  633. different Jesus is not using a racial insult.

  634. He's using the word that would refer to this beloved household

  635. pet. So he's not shaming her away,

  636. and he actually does show a light of hope and tenderness to

  637. her. And of course, at the same time,

  638. he has also just raised the stakes again and made her test

  639. more difficult because it was still a more clear and

  640. deliberate no. So he did say no, but he was,

  641. hey, look, I can't take the children's bread and give it,

  642. you know, to the puppies in the house.

  643. So he ignored her. And then he goes, I've only come

  644. to the lost children of Israel. And that she was Lord begging in

  645. front of him and pleading eyeball to eyeball.

  646. She's at his feet looking up at him and he's looking down at her

  647. and he goes I can't take the the children's bread and and give it

  648. to the puppies. So this is her her third

  649. rejection. She is very wise.

  650. She is very humble. She doesn't get offended.

  651. Verse 27 yes, Lord, what did she do Immediate agreement.

  652. Like we were saying, what part of the body of Christ are you?

  653. I don't care. Did you say I'm in the body of

  654. Christ? Then I rejoice, I celebrate.

  655. It's good enough for me. What's your position?

  656. Position under Jesus. That's all I know.

  657. That's good enough for me. That was the only place I ever

  658. wanted to be. Count me in.

  659. I love it and I'm thankful for it.

  660. Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs eat the crumbs

  661. that fall from their master's table.

  662. Wow. Very wise woman.

  663. Very humble woman. Not offended, not discouraged.

  664. She receives his terms and adapts herself to them.

  665. I'll take whatever terms you set.

  666. You're the master. I can't.

  667. I can't give the children's bread to the dogs.

  668. The dogs will take the crumbs, Master.

  669. And he's going you. I love faith.

  670. I love faith. I marvel to lack of faith.

  671. And I marvel when I see real faith.

  672. You have passed the test. You have walked all the way

  673. through. I put some barriers in front of

  674. you for your good, to draw you in, to draw you near, to

  675. strengthen you, to purify you, to bless you.

  676. What a humble and godly woman to take this approach to the

  677. Master. This is something we should

  678. learn from her. You cannot receive from God when

  679. you're mad at God, and if you think God has personally created

  680. your circumstances, you will often be mad at God.

  681. She knows there's a devil. She's come to Satan's enemy so

  682. that Jesus will bind the strongman and take this woman's

  683. daughter out from Satan's house. She goes with boldness.

  684. We should do the same. We go to God with gratitude and

  685. with boldness because we know who He is.

  686. So going to God with boldness is not based upon your personality.

  687. I've got a bold personality, Irrelevant.

  688. I've got a shy personality. Also irrelevant boldness to

  689. approach. The throne of grace is based

  690. upon the grace of God. It's based upon his nature.

  691. It's based upon his character, not I've got an outgoing

  692. personality. So I'll just kind of barge in

  693. there and say, hey, Lord, here's what you're going to do.

  694. No, no, you're going to go to the Lord with wisdom.

  695. You're going to go to the Lord with kindness.

  696. You're going to go to the Lord with grace.

  697. You're going to go to the Lord with gratitude, but you're going

  698. to go to the Lord reminding him of his word like Moses.

  699. Lord, remember what you said. I didn't write this script,

  700. Lord. I didn't make this up.

  701. I know who you are, I know what you've done, so I know what

  702. you'll do. We go to God with boldness

  703. because we know who He is. Do you want to have influence on

  704. authority above you and anywhere in life?

  705. These are good principles. You do it.

  706. You don't do it with demands and commands.

  707. You do it with submission. And your boldness isn't based on

  708. you. It's based upon the nature and

  709. the character of the one that you're appealing to and your own

  710. desperation and hunger. You will be strengthened by God

  711. and God will be glorified when you come to Him in this way.

  712. Remind Him of His own word and adapt yourself to it.

  713. I need to qualify myself. Whatever you say I am, I need to

  714. obey. Whatever you expect.

  715. That's the category that I need to put myself into.

  716. If you call me a dog in your in your house, then I say yes.

  717. So that means you feed me and you water me and you make sure

  718. that I am dewormed and all the other things that we need as a

  719. as a dog in the Lord's house. You take him at his word and you

  720. go and the Lord goes. The dog does get taken care of

  721. by the master. What is that?

  722. What are you? You're you're pleading to his

  723. nature and his character. Don't think for a second that

  724. she is wringing something out of Jesus that he doesn't want to

  725. give. That's right.

  726. How do we get it from the Lord? And he's going, all right, I

  727. give up. How stupid.

  728. That's not what that's not what's happening.

  729. So we remind Him of His own word.

  730. We adapt ourselves to it. Yes, Lord, even the dogs eat the

  731. crumbs from the fall from the Master's table.

  732. Then Jesus answered her. Verse 28.

  733. Oh woman, great is your faith, be it done for you as you

  734. desire. And her daughter was healed

  735. instantly. The test is passed and Jesus

  736. rejoices in it. Great is your faith.

  737. That's what he always points out.

  738. You lack faith. Where was your faith?

  739. Why don't you believe? Only believe.

  740. That's great faith. That's great faith.

  741. These are the things that he marvels at.

  742. It's all you see him marveling at throughout the gospels.

  743. No faith, great faith. No faith, great faith.

  744. It's what impresses him. It's what he loves, it's what he

  745. likes, it's what he wants. It's what he expects to see.

  746. Do you really believe that Jesus did something that he didn't

  747. want to do? Do you really believe that Jesus

  748. just did something that he wasn't supposed to do?

  749. Was he? Was he sent only to the House of

  750. Israel and he's not allowed to do anything else?

  751. He's supposed to obey the will of the Father.

  752. Did he just disobey the Father? Of course not.

  753. He's revealing the full will of the Father.

  754. This was a test for her good. If this woman had walked away

  755. after Jesus told her that her daughter couldn't have the

  756. children's bread, do you think that her daughter would have

  757. been healed and delivered? No.

  758. Why would it? Why would her daughter have been

  759. healed and delivered? If Jesus said if he had sat

  760. there in silence and she just goes well I'll move on, she

  761. wouldn't have received because it was her faith that pressed

  762. in. She pressed Him and she was

  763. rewarded. How often has my faith been

  764. feather light and paper thin? Far from being tested by my

  765. Lord, I've often just been moved into doubt just by looking at my

  766. circumstance. Withering, withering, small

  767. faith, weak faith, not trusting, not standing.

  768. We have to. We have to make sure we avoid

  769. condemnation over that, but we also have to be honest about

  770. that. We've talked much in our church

  771. about faith, how faith is not a formula, but faith will always

  772. find an action when it's real in the heart.

  773. I have no doubt that many of us could get an A+ on a paper test

  774. regarding the promises of God. Is it God's will to blank?

  775. Is it God's will to blank? Is it God's will to blank?

  776. And yet that paper test does not guarantee the fulfillment of

  777. those promises in our day-to-day life.

  778. Why? Because this brain can have

  779. possession of knowledge that this heart is not walking in

  780. revelation of and is the revelation knowledge of the

  781. heart that actually brings the promises of God to bear in our

  782. lives. And this one must be contended

  783. for. This one can be learned once and

  784. locked in. This one has to be renewed with

  785. the Word and with the promises afresh all the time.

  786. And I've just answered why we don't see what the Scriptures

  787. promise us. Did you just say it's our fault

  788. 1000 times? Yes.

  789. Allow me to be that preacher who said that thing.

  790. Now, can you apply that to a million categories?

  791. No, there's, there's a lot more nuance, I suppose.

  792. And yet I will not unsay what the scriptures have plainly

  793. said, that faith is how we press in and receive the promises of

  794. God. Amen.

  795. So I am saying what I am saying and I'm not saying what I'm not

  796. saying, and we can talk through details in particular scenarios,

  797. all without condemnation, but the Word is the final answer.

  798. Let the Word of God be found true.

  799. Let every man, pastor, Christian, be found a liar.

  800. Because God's ways are right and best.

  801. But pressing in does something. Pressing in moves us, it changes

  802. us. And this is where how we receive

  803. the promises through faith and patience.

  804. We receive the promises, that's how.

  805. Because if faith was an instantaneous thing, then there

  806. is no period of standing. There is no period of trial.

  807. There is no period of testing. It's well, God said it Well then

  808. how did you ever even have the problem to begin with?

  809. How did anything ever happened? How did anything ever go wrong?

  810. The Lord wants the friendship. He wants you, his Moses, to come

  811. up the mountain. He wants you and me as the

  812. Canaanite woman to come sit at His feet and to press in and to

  813. fellowship with him and get to know Him and allow Him to bless

  814. us and strengthen us. I know a testimony of a man.

  815. He was miraculously healed of an incurable blood disease and a

  816. heart defect when he was 16 years old.

  817. And he didn't have healing preaching or teaching or

  818. anything else. He just had his Bible says, his

  819. 16 year old. He would have strong days and he

  820. would have weak days. So some days he wouldn't even be

  821. able to talk. And other days he would have

  822. fuller strength. But he was slowly dying.

  823. His family knew it. The doctor knew it.

  824. The preacher who would sometimes come and visit recognized it.

  825. But one day he was reading his Bible and he found a promise for

  826. healing in his Bible. And it it just landed in his

  827. heart. And he's going how that how that

  828. get there? That's that's a problem.

  829. Is that right? Is that real?

  830. So he begs his mother send for the pastor so that he can come

  831. and tell me if this is what I think it is, if this says what I

  832. think it says. The short answer, surprise, yes.

  833. So the minister finally comes. I forget how long it takes him

  834. to come. I remember if it was a few days

  835. or longer. But the minister finally comes.

  836. And the day that the minister came, the young man couldn't

  837. speak that day. So he was frustrated.

  838. But he, he, he, he was able to, to hold his Bible and but he was

  839. just gesturing and shaking and but he wanted to ask the pastor,

  840. does does this mean I can be healed?

  841. And he's just, all he could do was mumble.

  842. He said he was just, all he could do is make sounds.

  843. And he said he was a pitiful sight.

  844. And the minister patted him on the head and said, it won't be

  845. long now, son. And that was it.

  846. That was the that was the, the visit from the minister that

  847. day. He said later he said, I thank

  848. God that I couldn't speak that day.

  849. He said because based off the way the the minister ministered

  850. to him, if you could call that ministry, I pray God would let

  851. me get run over by a bus before I would ever minister to anyone

  852. that way. But he was thankful that that

  853. man didn't speak to him about the Scriptures that day because

  854. this boy goes on to gain strength and to stand on God's

  855. promise. When he regained strength after

  856. a few days, he just said, you know what?

  857. You know, nobody answered this for me, but I'm going to take

  858. Jesus's words and assume that they're true, which is always a

  859. good way to approach the Bible. And he said, I'm going to assume

  860. they're true for now, and I'm going to assume they're true for

  861. me, and I'm going to assume they're true for today.

  862. And yet, reading them, he still saw it.

  863. Well, OK, he still didn't know. What do you do though?

  864. And this is where you and I want that formula.

  865. Hey, give me the script that I can lock in and go, OK, what did

  866. the guy do next? Well, the the point is he got

  867. the word of God into his heart. And when the word of God is in

  868. your heart and when the word of God is in my heart, it will find

  869. its appropriate application. It might drive you to the feet

  870. of Jesus. It might cause you to be like

  871. the the centurion. And Jesus says, all right, I'll

  872. come to your house. And he goes, no, no, no, no.

  873. You just say the word. You just say the word.

  874. You don't have to come to my house.

  875. What do you think you're doing? You don't tell Jesus what to do.

  876. And Jesus goes, I love your faith.

  877. So it's not, it's not a boldness based upon you.

  878. It's a confidence in Christ. I know who you are.

  879. Oh, you have all authority. I'm a man under authority.

  880. I have men under me under authority.

  881. But you are the authority. You just speak it and the thing

  882. will happen. Our faith matters.

  883. So thankfully, this young man, his faith was made strong in the

  884. word of God when nobody else would stand with him.

  885. And he was healed and strengthened.

  886. He becomes a a pastor and preacher lived to 80 some years

  887. old before he went home to be with the Lord.

  888. What did what did the Lord do for him in that season?

  889. The Lord revealed his hunger. The Lord revealed his own

  890. confidence in him. I'm going to close with Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  891. chapter 18. Luke chapter 18, verse one.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  892. And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought

  893. always to pray and not lose heart.

  894. Everybody say not lose heart, I use heart.

  895. He said. In a certain city there was a

  896. judge who neither feared God nor respected man, and there was a

  897. widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, Give

  898. me justice against my adversary. For a while he refused, but

  899. afterward he said to himself, Though I neither fear God nor

  900. respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will

  901. give her justice so that she'll not beat me down by her

  902. continual coming. And the Lord said, Hear what the

  903. unrighteous judge says, And will God not give justice to his

  904. elect, who cry to him day and night?

  905. Will he delay long over them? I tell you, He will give justice

  906. to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of

  907. Man comes, will he find faith in the earth?

  908. So of course our God is just. Our God is not uncaring or

  909. unkind like this wicked judge. But his point is, even a wicked

  910. judge, when pestered, will deliver what his responsibility

  911. it is to deliver. Jesus's argument is not that

  912. your God is a wicked God who you must pester.

  913. His argument is how much more will your loving Father give to

  914. those who pursue and seek Him? This woman comes to Jesus back

  915. to the the Canaanite woman. She comes to Jesus in a

  916. particular moment in His ministry, which is why she gets

  917. the particular response she gets, because He was first

  918. called to the lost House of Israel, but he was not only

  919. called to the lost House of Israel.

  920. Which is why you and I, Canaanites and worse and beyond,

  921. can come to the Lord right now, today, without delay.

  922. We can press in, we can pursue. Jews do not have a special

  923. access. The only people who have access

  924. to God are people who are under the blood of Jesus.

  925. That's it. So any Jew who's worshipping

  926. according to Old Testament standards, which are extremely

  927. few by the way, Side note, modern Jews are not operating in

  928. in the Old Testament covenant for the most part.

  929. It's just a a cultural thing, but the only people who have

  930. access to God are people who have been given access by the

  931. blood of Christ. And how have you received that

  932. access? By God's grace through your

  933. faith. God wants to save the whole

  934. world. Is the whole world saved,

  935. Church? No, but by faith, the whole

  936. world can receive the grace of God.

  937. We can receive all the grace of God.

  938. If even an unjust judge will reward persistence, how much

  939. more will God answer you, His people, His children?

  940. Healing is the children's bread, and you are the children of God.

  941. You eat from the master's table and you say, well, what if I

  942. wasn't? What if I was a dog?

  943. Well, even the dog, Then even as a dog you have right to claim

  944. provision, protection, whatever it is you need, and yet you're

  945. not a dog. You are a child of God.

  946. The question remains, will the Son of Man find faith on the

  947. earth? More specifically, will the Son

  948. of Man find faith in you and this woman?

  949. We see the fullness of what Jesus has taught us to do

  950. earlier. Ask, seek, and knock.

  951. Is it the begging that gets the work done?

  952. It is the praying with a persistent heart that changes

  953. you and I. It is the praying with a

  954. persistent heart that shifts our perspective to actually see what

  955. the Lord has already provided. This is, these are the means by

  956. which the Lord has chosen to grow and mature and work through

  957. us. There's mystery here, Church.

  958. I cannot decode it for you. I have not decoded it all for

  959. myself. There are things I think that

  960. are out of our jurisdiction. And I just say, praise the Lord

  961. for his beautiful mysteries. And yet, what do we see?

  962. What do we know for sure? We know that our faith matters

  963. and our faith needs to look like something asking, seeking, and

  964. knocking. So be encouraged when the Lord

  965. seems silent and know that He's drawing you in.

  966. Be strengthened when the Lord, when the Lord seems slow and

  967. know that He wants to build you up and stand firm on His word.

  968. Ask and it will be given. Seek and you will find knock and

  969. the door will be opened. God, we thank you for your word.

  970. It's so powerful, it's so refreshing and so encouraging.

  971. We pray that you would show us and bring us revelation and

  972. light. Help us to know you more, Help

  973. us to enjoy you more deeply, and help us to be a people of a

  974. deliberate and bold faith that pursue You even though you seem

  975. to deflect at times. Your purpose is for our good.

  976. You don't test us to condemn us. You don't test us to reject us.

  977. You test us to purify us, to make us more like you, to make

  978. us more humble, to make us more hungry, to make us lean in.

  979. It's all that you've done and all that you've said.

  980. And God has trials and tribulations and difficulties as

  981. all the results of the curse. Those things also come.

  982. We thank you that you deliver us from evil.

  983. Strengthen your people. God help us to to truly believe,

  984. not just to know with our heads, but to leave with, but to

  985. believe with our hearts that we would receive the fullness as we

  986. ask, as we seek, as we knock. Draw us near as your friends and

  987. as your children. We love you, we thank you in

  988. Jesus name and now the Lord bless you and keep you.

  989. The Lord make his face Shinedown upon you and be gracious to you.

  990. The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you great

  991. peace in Jesus name, Amen.
