  1. the second announcement is that we're

  2. going to be having our Good Friday

  3. service at 6:30 p.m. um the re reality

  4. is we used to have that at 4:00 and we

  5. heard from the congregation with people

  6. that would really want to come but just

  7. can't get off work that early uh the

  8. thinking at of having it four was to

  9. have it before you have dinner so you

  10. can still have dinner but we've decided

  11. that um through feedback that 6:30 would

  12. be a better time and so we'd love to

  13. have you there I think there's something

  14. really powerful when we consider not

  15. just the resurrection at Easter but what

  16. it cost Jesus in the first place and so

  17. Good Friday is a very somber very

  18. reflective time worship only I I I don't

  19. think I really have much of a speaking

  20. role at all uh several of you will

  21. though reading scripture um it's really

  22. powerful time and and highlighting the

  23. depths of the suffering of Christ on the

  24. cross really uh just increases our joy

  25. on Easter so um Easter notice we have a

  26. coffee hour at 9:30 that's not just it's

  27. like an upgraded coffee hour it's almost

  28. breakfast and a really good one so i'

  29. love to have you for that there too and

  30. you can invite your friends to all of

  31. these times and then our Easter Service

  32. will be on Sunday at 10:30 at the normal

  33. time um another exciting thing I have to

  34. announce um uh is that we've been

  35. invited by a creek a creek is probably

  36. the largest church in in Oregon to

  37. participate in their this giant scale

  38. Evangelistic event at the Moda Center

  39. it's called PDX Crusade I'm particularly

  40. excited about that because coming from a

  41. campus Crusade family part of me always

  42. thought that uh large scale Evangelistic

  43. events should not just be happening

  44. through parot church organizations but

  45. through the church itself and so a is

  46. doing this the motor Center holds up to

  47. 25,000 people they're expecting it to be

  48. packed they need something like 2,000

  49. people serving and so you'll be uh told

  50. about service opportunity I'm meeting

  51. with their Pastor Brett met on April

  52. 11th and I'm assuming we'll be

  53. discussing a lot of this I don't know to

  54. what degree they want us involved but

  55. what they at least wanted to do was for

  56. those who make a recommitment in faith

  57. or come to Faith in the first point

  58. point them to faithful churches and

  59. we're one of the ones that they've

  60. chosen to point to so huge blessing you

  61. know I'm I have a degree in marting

  62. advertising from Portland State and in

  63. terms of Impressions you can't get a

  64. better deal than 25,000 people hearing

  65. about your church and I think people in

  66. Oregon are looking for uh uh churches

  67. that are faithful and sometimes they'd

  68. rather choose a smaller church over a

  69. larger one and so I think I don't want

  70. to predict how much we'll grow but I

  71. think we will grow as a result and we'd

  72. love to have you involved more on that

  73. in the future um you can go to their

  74. website PDX Crusade decom and talk about

  75. it we'll probably be buying lots of

  76. these These are bumper stickers if you

  77. want to help us promote it I'm going to

  78. putting these on my van another car uh

  79. you can also buy T-shirts and things

  80. like that so exciting things um that God

  81. is doing in in Portland and I'm really

  82. excited and grateful to be part of it um

  83. because of that they're doing that on

  84. the first weekend of August and that is

  85. normally when we have our pig roast and

  86. so we've decided to participate in that

  87. and not double up on the pig roast too

  88. feeling that would be way too much and

  89. just move our pig roast one week back so

  90. if you're looking at your calendars the

  91. pig roast is not something you want to

  92. Miss it's great fun 200t slide uh all

  93. you can eat brisket and uh pork that's

  94. been you know uh roasting in our above

  95. ground uh pit for a long 12 hours or

  96. something like that so if you if you go

  97. to to um August on your calendar it

  98. normally would have been on August 2nd

  99. but August 2nd and 3rd is the PDX

  100. Crusade so it's going to be on the 9th

  101. and that's starts at 11: and we'll be

  102. ending around 2 maybe one other thing is

  103. you know you if if you're thinking about

  104. should I come should I not if you have

  105. kids we do kind of a graduation party on

  106. the pig roast on um Sunday where kids

  107. graduate from the fifth grade to the

  108. sixth grade which takes them out of our

  109. children's program and has them come up

  110. here and so we keep the slide open for

  111. that for that second day on Sunday uh I

  112. think which is really fun maybe the last

  113. thing I'll say is that um if you've not

  114. been baptized and you want to be

  115. baptized right now we'll probably be

  116. doing baptisms more often than this but

  117. we have a big baptismal which is

  118. basically a hot tub we have a heater for

  119. it so even if it's not as warm of a day

  120. we could do it really any day any time

  121. of day and uh so um if you want to be

  122. baptized uh come let me know because we

  123. have a process that we'd like to take

  124. you through it's basically reading a

  125. chapter in a book about baptism and then

  126. talking about um your testimony and then

  127. and then uh just going forward from

  128. there so um or if you want one of your

  129. children baptized that's another thing

  130. um while we don't baptize infants we do

  131. baptize believing children and so we

  132. have a process that we take them through

  133. as well and it's not scary we uh we ask

  134. them questions that they have time to

  135. prepare for with their parents that's

  136. all by the way of announcements again

  137. August 9th 11 to 12th 11 to2 is our um

  138. is our pig roast I'm going to go ahead

  139. and pray and then we're going to get

  140. right back into Genesis as usual we have

  141. lots to talk about but I think even more

  142. heavyweight things to talk about than

  143. usual let me

  144. pray father as we come to your word we

  145. want to come as students with teachable

  146. attitudes uh listening ears and Open

  147. Hearts but we know that it's you that

  148. has to open your scriptures to us and

  149. open our hearts to your scripture and we

  150. pray that we would do that there there

  151. is no greater teacher than your spirit

  152. your spirit dwells inside of us and can

  153. uh convict us challenge us strengthen us

  154. encourage us and when we need

  155. consolation even console us these are

  156. all things we need that are important

  157. for us and there's power in your word

  158. and Power in the story that telling us

  159. about what really happened with Joseph

  160. and his attitude towards things like

  161. your sovereignty and forgiveness and so

  162. I pray that we would be able to deeply

  163. consider these things and what they mean

  164. for our faith and what they mean for

  165. applic applying this and and gaining the

  166. power to be transformed by it in in our

  167. lives I pray these things in Jesus name

  168. amen I was trying to think of a uh movie

  169. or story that just about everyone would

  170. know and whether or not you've seen uh

  171. Star Wars or not I doubt there's anybody

  172. in here that doesn't know who Darth

  173. Vader is now you might not know his

  174. backstory he started as Anakin Skywalker

  175. and uh there was some kind of Prophecy

  176. I'm not really a Star Wars uh uh geek or

  177. nerd I I nerd out on other things just

  178. not on that and uh but I know a little

  179. bit about it from having seen the movies

  180. and uh he he was there was some kind of

  181. Prophecy that he'd be the one that

  182. brings the balance the force he was

  183. particularly Force sensitive a very

  184. powerful in the force and so Obi-Wan

  185. wanted to make him his Apprentice

  186. technically Padawan but again we're not

  187. nerding out here and uh so I think

  188. apprentices are the the evil ones thing

  189. turns out uh Anakin because of fear and

  190. anger turns to the dark side and he

  191. becomes very evil and does extremely

  192. evil things he kills all the children

  193. younglings and uh he kills all of them

  194. and murders them because he's so

  195. terrified that he's not going to be able

  196. to save the love of his life and uh

  197. thinks that he may gain that power but

  198. once that power takes over him he does

  199. terribly evil things so in the story

  200. when you think of who chose to kill

  201. those Youngs you think well it's Anakin

  202. just because his name is become Darth

  203. Vader doesn't mean he's not culpable for

  204. it he's guilty and you never once think

  205. that anybody else is it's him that did

  206. it right but then you have to consider

  207. who wrote that story and I thought it'd

  208. be a slam dunk that was like George

  209. Lucas or something it's actually hard to

  210. tell it's some guy named um Alan Dean

  211. Foster or something the ghost wrote it

  212. and then you're like well who wrote the

  213. the origin story and some online sources

  214. will say it was George Lucas right but

  215. you never think either regardless of who

  216. the author is that it's their fault that

  217. anak can turned to the dark side or that

  218. he killed the Younglings right you don't

  219. blame the author because you're in the

  220. story and when you're in the story that

  221. the villain is the one that you want to

  222. to be brought to Justice you know I was

  223. thinking about Clint Eastwood stories

  224. and I think the reason why we like them

  225. is because we like a good Revenge story

  226. most of them seem to be revenge stories

  227. you know it's not actually God's way but

  228. there's something in us that likes that

  229. and so my point is just simply that we

  230. we don't really blame the author until

  231. we do you know um this new Snow White

  232. movie I blame the authors for the

  233. changes they made in that and if I was a

  234. plane watching it I'd still walk out

  235. so uh it takes a moment to get that one

  236. but what happens when you start blaming

  237. the author have you ever read a story

  238. and you're like you got so familiar with

  239. the character they develop the character

  240. and then the author has that character

  241. do something that's so out of character

  242. it just feels wrong almost like the

  243. author made the wrong choice think of

  244. that when we're talking about scripture

  245. today in God's

  246. sovereignty God authored not only the

  247. words in the scripture but all the

  248. events too he's the author of Life he's

  249. the author of everything that happens so

  250. when you think about that God as the

  251. author of all the story and the story is

  252. history it's not fiction anymore and

  253. we're the characters do you sometimes

  254. disagree with his authorial decisions

  255. over your life I do sometimes I don't

  256. understand why job did we'll go through

  257. that maybe for a Time Joseph did he

  258. seems un it doesn't say he did so and it

  259. just seems like he accepted it really

  260. quickly it's a very powerful thing that

  261. he did that we're going to find out in

  262. this chapter that he assigns the reason

  263. why he was sent to Egypt not to the

  264. brothers who sold him into slavery but

  265. to God who sent him there so he has a

  266. very high view of God's sovereignty he

  267. knows that God authored his story and he

  268. knows that he Au authored it in Advance

  269. even in advance of when have given his

  270. dreams but at a minimum he gave him

  271. dreams that he was going to rule over

  272. his own family so he even Joseph knew in

  273. advance that that was going to happen so

  274. God prepared him to accept his

  275. sovereignty so when we disagree with the

  276. author sometimes we might disagree that

  277. he's not in control you think he can't

  278. possibly be in control and why would you

  279. think that if you know anything about

  280. God you know he's good there not there's

  281. no point in thinking him about him as

  282. God if he's not good uh so if he's good

  283. then why do these bad things happen that

  284. theological terms that's called theodicy

  285. if God's in control how can evil happen

  286. when God's revealed will is against evil

  287. why doesn't he stop it all right it's

  288. very difficult question and Christians

  289. give different answers you'll hear mine

  290. today and that that also represents the

  291. elders and teaching of Boon faery but

  292. but on a personal level you have to

  293. decide the enemy is going to try to

  294. divide those two concepts that God is

  295. good and that God is in control that God

  296. is Sovereign and that he's is good and

  297. he might divide you towards this side

  298. where like well if God's in control and

  299. this evil thing happened he must not be

  300. good and it's usually very personal evil

  301. that happened to you sometimes though

  302. can just be something that happened to

  303. someone you love in Joseph's case it was

  304. very personal evil that happened to him

  305. and and he did not decide that God is

  306. only Sovereign but since the evil thing

  307. happened not good he decided that God is

  308. good and God is Sovereign and that's

  309. shown here very much and what it led to

  310. was that he ended up loving God even

  311. more and also loving his brothers so if

  312. we could put the main point up today

  313. you're going to see how Joseph

  314. knew that accepting God's trusting God's

  315. Sovereign goodness results in love for

  316. God that leads to love for

  317. others it means aligning yourself with

  318. what you know about him and his purposes

  319. it means even when the worst thing

  320. possibly happens that it's not just sort

  321. of a fake yeah God is good but you

  322. deeply trust God's Sovereign goodness

  323. and that then results in loving him more

  324. you'll see Joseph's love for God here

  325. but that love that God shows in his

  326. Sovereign goodness is also for others

  327. let me actually just read a verse here

  328. because it's unbelievable um verse 7 of

  329. 40 uh actually yeah 45 um and God sent

  330. me before you to preserve for you he's

  331. talking to the brothers and God sent me

  332. before you to preserve for you a Remnant

  333. on Earth and to keep alive for you many

  334. survivors

  335. what they sold him into slavery and what

  336. was God doing behind the

  337. scenes he was using all of that in order

  338. to save them and keep them alive and and

  339. many of them and many others as well

  340. we'll see by the end of of Genesis which

  341. we're not going to get to today but the

  342. point is that God's Sovereign plan is so

  343. much more good than you can imagine that

  344. it actually eclipses the evil that's

  345. happened he's in control of that too so

  346. we're going to be talking a lot about

  347. God's sovereignty and before we even get

  348. into to the story I want to say

  349. something and this is from the heart uh

  350. everything that I say in terms of my

  351. view and the elders View and conviction

  352. really about God's sovereignty uh these

  353. are strong convictions but a

  354. simultaneous conviction for me is that

  355. every single Christian needs to have the

  356. space the right and the time to develop

  357. their own convictions not only that I

  358. believe that we have been given the

  359. right by God to disagree as unto the

  360. Lord

  361. Paul says that in Romans and also in

  362. Corinthians that for example if you

  363. think one day is more holy than other

  364. then keep that day holy as unto the Lord

  365. if you think all days are alike then

  366. keep all those days unto the Lord but as

  367. if you're doing it unto the Lord God

  368. accepts it we can have different

  369. convictions on things you can have

  370. differing convictions from your elders

  371. it's difficult uh it's not particularly

  372. enjoyable when you disagree with the

  373. elders but you are not only welcome to

  374. uh develop your own convictions you are

  375. welcome to disagree not divisively we

  376. don't want you disagreeing divisively

  377. and stirring up uh stirring up this

  378. Unity but we don't really expect that to

  379. happen so if it does we deal with it but

  380. the point is both convictions are

  381. important so I do not want you to feel

  382. overshadowed what's being said rather

  383. consider me like a guide through the

  384. topic of God's sovereignty today because

  385. it comes up very clearly In this passage

  386. so we need to deal with it asking

  387. questions like how Sovereign is God how

  388. free is the will of man what does the

  389. Bible say about it I wouldn't go to

  390. philosophy or Logic for that I would go

  391. to just what does God's word say okay

  392. and you may think well he's mentioning

  393. some verses and not others I can't

  394. mention them all I'm going to mention

  395. the ones that I believe say really

  396. really particular things about those

  397. topics and I'm also available more

  398. available than you know people think oh

  399. he's so busy I'm busy with the church

  400. and my family the family is still the

  401. priority there but I have lots of time

  402. you want to meet with me on Wednesday

  403. Thursday or Friday uh I'm not at the

  404. point where I have to book out several

  405. months to do that and I love discussing

  406. things and I'll take the same attitude

  407. there at least I'll try which is uh the

  408. one that we do in our discipleship

  409. communities where we facilitate

  410. discussion and in our discussion in the

  411. discipleship Community people disagreed

  412. some people had a certain view of God's

  413. sovereignty some people had other and

  414. there didn't seem to be any uh flaring

  415. tempers or deep frustration either so I

  416. hope you appreciate a church that that

  417. will tell you exactly what it believes

  418. but also give you the freedom to decide

  419. what you do according to scripture and

  420. that's what it ought to be so when I say

  421. this means this you look with your own

  422. heart and spirit and mind and think God

  423. does it really say that and if it does

  424. then submit to it and if you feel like

  425. no I feel differently then decide you

  426. know decide what your conviction is I'll

  427. say no more about that again throw up

  428. the main point one more time so we can

  429. get back into the idea that we're

  430. talking about and that is that trusting

  431. God's sovereignty or Sovereign goodness

  432. results in love for God that leads to

  433. love for others when you have an

  434. interruption there it interrupts your

  435. love for God and it will most certainly

  436. interrupt your love for others we do not

  437. have the power to love others

  438. particularly when they sin against us

  439. but not the way that God loves them

  440. unless we're aligned with his Sovereign

  441. goodness all right let's get into the

  442. story we pick back up in verse

  443. four last time we ended in verse 5 but

  444. we want to just go back a little bit and

  445. find out what's happening um what's

  446. going on here is that Joseph has finally

  447. revealed himself to Brothers he was

  448. testing them he was setting up so that

  449. he would get his father back and Judah

  450. sacrificed himself at least

  451. hypothetically to uh so that Benjamin

  452. wouldn't have to be uh come a servant

  453. and and stay away he did that out of

  454. love for Benjamin in particular love for

  455. his father Jacob and you can see he's a

  456. changed man and it overwhelms Joseph he

  457. realizes wow my brothers are trustworthy

  458. again so he reveals himself and he

  459. forgives them deeply and part of what

  460. we're learning about today is how he

  461. responds to them how much he loves God

  462. and and how much he actually loves them

  463. even though they sold him into slavery

  464. verse four so Joseph said to his

  465. brothers come near to me please I want

  466. to stop right there when someone has

  467. sinned against you and you have not

  468. forgiven them or believe that you've

  469. forgiven them but still don't know if

  470. you can trust them it's always a

  471. question mark if you want to come near

  472. again sometimes even physically right

  473. that could be really difficult in the

  474. church because you guys sit right next

  475. to each other right and it's not that

  476. far away and you start feeling awkward

  477. coming to church when there's something

  478. wrong in a relationship to another

  479. person and it becomes difficult and God

  480. wants to reconcile those relationships

  481. and he'll move Heaven and Earth he'll

  482. create situations that are not

  483. coincidences to put you like corner to

  484. corner with the decision of whether

  485. you're going to forgive and reconcile

  486. and Joseph wants to be near to them just

  487. more evidence that he's truly forgiven

  488. and really is interested in having trust

  489. be rebuilt he might think about are you

  490. aligned with God's will to draw close

  491. again to those who have sinned against

  492. you through a process of reconciliation

  493. that's not always possible we've been

  494. talking a lot about that in the last

  495. four sermons about exactly what's the

  496. difference between forgiveness and

  497. Reconciliation if you have questions and

  498. it's reasonable to have questions about

  499. that refer back to those sermons but

  500. here it's obvious that Joseph wants to

  501. be near them he loves them he's been

  502. wanting and longing to be reconciled and

  503. they came near and he said I am your

  504. brother Joseph whom you sold into Egypt

  505. I'll stop there again he doesn't deny

  506. what they did he's not pretending like

  507. it was just all okay and totally fine

  508. and he hasn't forgotten right um or that

  509. he that he's somehow forgotten about it

  510. and that's important he doesn't diminish

  511. the severity of their sin and that's not

  512. what forgiveness ever requires you to do

  513. did you know that did you know that

  514. forgiveness does not require you to

  515. diminish the severity of someone's sin

  516. ever that's not the way right Jesus can

  517. take whatever severity of sin when they

  518. ask for forgiveness based on the cross

  519. so that it becomes just for you to

  520. forgive them they did the wrong thing

  521. but Jesus gets punished for it instead

  522. of them that's why you can show them

  523. Grace that's why it's okay for God to

  524. not judge those who believe that who are

  525. justified by that sacrifice otherwise

  526. you know if a judge just said hey you

  527. know what it's not that big a deal that

  528. you killed this other person I'm going

  529. to let you off the hook you know judges

  530. are doing that all the time in America

  531. we see that as lawlessness increases

  532. hearts grow cold and lawlessness is

  533. increasing you know so so we see that

  534. happening in judges but God's not a

  535. judge like that God is Justified in

  536. forgiving people because he has not left

  537. the guilt unpunished it's just not that

  538. person that had to incur the punishment

  539. sometimes sometimes you still have

  540. Earthly consequences so again you don't

  541. have to diminish anybody's sin God's not

  542. asking you to say it's not that big of a

  543. deal it is a big deal sin leads to death

  544. it breaks

  545. relationships but you can forgive anyway

  546. because of the Cross we talked all about

  547. that last week verse 5 and now do not be

  548. distressed or angry with

  549. yourselves his worry is their inner

  550. emotional life they sold him into

  551. slavery they trafficked him can you

  552. imagine being trafficked and not seeing

  553. your family I think we calculated to as

  554. about 22 years by our best calculations

  555. if you look at the ages and things over

  556. two decades and he's concerned with

  557. their

  558. feelings there's there is no way that he

  559. didn't forgive them that's not possible

  560. humanly speaking to be concerned with

  561. the feelings of the person who

  562. trafficked

  563. you ask yourself if you're wondering

  564. have I really forgiven because you guys

  565. are conscientious and sincere and I've

  566. had meetings with some of you where

  567. you've asked you know how do I how do I

  568. know that I want to really forgive them

  569. how do I know that I really

  570. have well one example of that would be

  571. you'd start caring about them again

  572. loving them again being concerned for

  573. their feelings here what is he concerned

  574. about well it would be very distressing

  575. to meet the man you sold into slavery

  576. wouldn't it especially when he's in

  577. charge of all Egypt second in command he

  578. doesn't want them to be distressed he

  579. does not want to be intimidating and he

  580. does not even want them to be angry with

  581. themselves he wants them to experience

  582. real

  583. forgiveness so let me read it again and

  584. do not be distressed or angry with

  585. yourselves because you sold me here for

  586. God sent me before you to preserve life

  587. now and that's statement alone you could

  588. still kind of hold together the fact

  589. that they trafficked him and God sent

  590. him but Joseph goes farther than that

  591. listen to this for the famine had been

  592. in the land these two years and there

  593. are yet five years in which there will

  594. be neither plowing nor Harvest so at

  595. that time no supermarkets or anything

  596. like that it's an agrarian society and

  597. when there's no food for years if there

  598. if someone if they don't find food

  599. they're going to die it's an absolute

  600. life and death situation a terribly Des

  601. more desperate than the Dust Bowl more

  602. desperate than the Great depression

  603. there is no food except for in Egypt and

  604. God pre-planned to use Joseph for

  605. that but he continues verse 7 and God

  606. sent me before you to preserve for you a

  607. Remnant on Earth and to keep alive for

  608. you many survivors the very

  609. people who sinned against Joseph by

  610. selling him into slavery are the ones

  611. whom God is sovereignly caring for in

  612. and through all of

  613. that I mean to me no one God doesn't

  614. tell us his plans in advance because

  615. they would be

  616. overwhelming imagine being told hey I

  617. want to use you to save your

  618. brothers and you're like yes I what

  619. what's going to happen well there's

  620. going to be a famine and if people don't

  621. get food everyone's going to die and I'm

  622. going to make you the vice world of

  623. Egypt and give you a great and wise plan

  624. and you're going to just hoard all of

  625. this grain and the whole world's going

  626. to come to you and you're going to save

  627. so many people like yeah there's just a

  628. catch but what is it you're going to be

  629. hated by your brother brothers sold into

  630. slavery and they're going to lie to your

  631. father that you were torn by animals and

  632. you're not going to see them for 22

  633. years can can you think if you have

  634. children can you think of times where

  635. you haven't told them the full weighty

  636. truth about something because they're in

  637. their childhood and you don't want to

  638. put that kind of weight on them God

  639. loves us like children we are his

  640. children when we believe and so but

  641. that's that's what God did that's the

  642. story

  643. [Music]

  644. wrote so if you're Joseph and in this

  645. case Joseph is an example of someone

  646. early and often accepting God's

  647. sovereignty and not letting it be

  648. divided from his conviction that God is

  649. good but for you I think I've told you

  650. the story where uh Christine and I got

  651. married and went off to Hawaii for our

  652. honeymoon and we had these seven days

  653. I'd never been a tropical place you know

  654. she was kind of astonished because for

  655. her it's normal to you know see these

  656. amazingly fragrant flowers that you can

  657. eats like a ginger flour but for me

  658. everything was I was a little child

  659. there you know and then the second day

  660. she gets emergency room

  661. sick first thought I like why of all

  662. times of all times the honeymoon she's

  663. going to get this desperately sick and I

  664. don't know exactly how God speaks to you

  665. but sometimes he puts thoughts in my

  666. mind that didn't come from me they come

  667. from his word or they come from his

  668. spirit and it was a question in this

  669. case what if I did this so that you

  670. could learn how to serve your wife and I

  671. thought I'm willing to do that I went

  672. from I I'm I'm not proud to say it but I

  673. went from blaming him for ruining my

  674. honeymoon to yeah I'll do that yes I can

  675. serve her you know so he stayed in I

  676. mean I cooked Ramen in like a coffee

  677. kind of thing you know you can heat up

  678. the water uh and honestly then it was so

  679. interesting she would feel really great

  680. half the day so we did the road to Hana

  681. while she's sick and she's tough but she

  682. wasn't actually feeling anywhere near as

  683. sick as she did in the mornings and the

  684. evenings so we still had a wonderful

  685. honeymoon but it's been really the story

  686. of my whole marriage that God has

  687. wanting to teach me how to sacrificially

  688. serve my wife and I do better at times

  689. than others but man I don't know if he'd

  690. said hey I'm going to make your

  691. honeymoon I'm going to have your wife

  692. get emergency room sick to teach you to

  693. serve

  694. her it had to happen to me before I

  695. surrender to it that's the way I feel

  696. and that can be the case with God's

  697. sovereignty so many times is when

  698. terrible things happen your faith is

  699. being tested and Satan's tempting you

  700. right along that to doubt his

  701. goodness I think it's probably more

  702. often that for Christians especially

  703. Christians um like kind of conservative

  704. Evangelical biblical Christians it's

  705. more likely that you'll be tempted to to

  706. distrust his goodness than his

  707. sovereignty because you just know in

  708. your bones that he's in control but that

  709. can happen too you start like are you

  710. not in control here what you do not know

  711. me do you not see what's happening well

  712. it's way more than that God has a plan

  713. that's far greater than you yet know and

  714. sometimes he reveals parts of that plan

  715. he did for Joseph and he he does for us

  716. in Joseph's story but even goes on

  717. before there let me read verse 7 again

  718. and God sent me before you to preserve

  719. for you a Remnant on Earth and to keep

  720. alive for you many survivors now listen

  721. to this doozy so it was not you who sent

  722. me to here sent me here but God we're

  723. going to stop there before we even go to

  724. the second part of the verse so it was

  725. not you who sent me here but God whose

  726. will is Joseph highlighting in his view

  727. of of sovereignty God's over against the

  728. will of the

  729. brothers the author's will that's the

  730. one who decided and he decided the means

  731. too it happened that way because that's

  732. the way God wrote the story it was not

  733. the brothers that sent him to Egypt is

  734. Joseph actually denying their sin no we

  735. just got done saying he told them you

  736. whom you sold into Egypt you did it but

  737. it wasn't you who did it it was God who

  738. did it and it shows a remarkable view of

  739. God's sovereignty I thought long and

  740. hard about this and there are times when

  741. God's highlighting certain things and

  742. you talk about this Doctrine or that but

  743. I found that maybe the most valuable

  744. thing that I could do is

  745. discuss maybe through kind of a Biblical

  746. surve survey certain question about

  747. God's sovereignty maybe one question

  748. would be how Sovereign is he does he

  749. really determine all things if so what

  750. scriptures say those things if he

  751. determines all things do we have free

  752. will do we have some free will do we

  753. have a limited free will do our choices

  754. matter if God determines all things then

  755. can humans actually be guilty do you

  756. know that Paul asked that question in

  757. Romans 9ine if God hardened Pharaoh's

  758. heart why do you still find fault in

  759. him I said that correct I thought I

  760. messed that up but yeah if God hardened

  761. Pharaoh's heart how can you still find

  762. fault in him for who can resist his will

  763. there's a there's a problem with God's

  764. sovereignty and trying to say that human

  765. will is free and there's Christians for

  766. the ages have been working it out okay

  767. so I'm going to present you with the

  768. view that Boon fairy teaches and I'm I'm

  769. not presenting two equal and balance

  770. views because I have a very strong

  771. conviction on this I'm not saying you

  772. couldn't present uh a balance view I

  773. think the most valuable thing I can do

  774. you're here at this church you want to

  775. get to know what the church teaches you

  776. want to know what the Bible teaches so

  777. we're going to go to actually quite a

  778. few verses here to discuss questions

  779. like that what is God actually Sovereign

  780. over is it everything and how is he

  781. Sovereign over and what does that mean

  782. for our will questions like that uh

  783. because Joseph said and God uh but God

  784. sent me here not you it wasn't you that

  785. sent me but God okay so the very first

  786. verse I want to go to and this is where

  787. you just turn your own interpretation on

  788. you ask the holy spirit is this true is

  789. this what I believe from this chapter is

  790. going to be Isaiah

    Isaiah 45:7

  791. 45 verse 7 and I'll have it up too so

  792. you can turn there in your Bibles I'm

  793. reading from the ESV Bible by the way um

  794. which I think is a faithful translation

  795. H but I also think there are other

  796. faithful translations as well but here

  797. is what God says in Isaiah 45 verse 7 I

    Isaiah 45:7

  798. form light and create Darkness I make

  799. well-being and create calamity I am the

  800. Lord who does all these

  801. things what I believe that saying is

  802. that every time that something good is

  803. happened and every single time that

  804. something calamate has happened God has

  805. done that all of the things so in my

  806. life I would I would consider Katrina

  807. something that God brought about I don't

  808. know why I think Christians should stop

  809. short of thinking they know that that

  810. was somehow to judge someone or for some

  811. purpose God has not revealed his

  812. purposes in a lot of modern calamities

  813. but but when it talks about the famine

  814. which is a Calamity God brought that

  815. about he said he was going to bring it

  816. about he limited the the time of

  817. abundance to S years in the time of

  818. famine to seven years and he made sure

  819. that the seven years of famine swallowed

  820. up the seven years of abundance God did

  821. all of that so when I look at this I

  822. don't think well there are some

  823. calamities that God doesn't create he's

  824. in charge of all of them he is in

  825. control of all of them so that that's

  826. that's sort of a a baseline about about

  827. about things that happen that are good

  828. things that are happen the bad Wars

  829. famines natural disasters okay let's go

  830. to Proverbs um chapter

  831. 16 verse

  832. 33 the lot is cast into the lap but it's

  833. every decision is from the Lord lot

  834. casting was intentionally random it's

  835. like rolling the dice and Israelites

  836. will understand what this means more

  837. deeply because it's part of their

  838. history when sometimes and this was

  839. actually taught by God to do the priest

  840. would draw lots to decide what God's

  841. will is why cuz they know that he's

  842. Sovereign over random events you're

  843. eliminating human bias you're

  844. randomizing it but it's not actually

  845. random because every decision is from

  846. the Lord we're not going to get into

  847. decision- making in the will of God in

  848. the sense that should you flip a coin

  849. about it I don't think you should but

  850. that's a different sermon uh I'd love to

  851. get into all those things but again all

  852. every random event I believe every

  853. single random event is ultimately fully

  854. in the control of God decision-making

  855. process so that means there are no

  856. random events that doesn't mean that if

  857. a tower falls on people God did that

  858. because they sinned again you do not

  859. assign motive to God where he hasn't

  860. revealed the motive right that's a

  861. really important thing you can really

  862. hurt other people sometimes you know

  863. maybe maybe a disease is caused by sin

  864. there are certain sins you can commit

  865. that are definitely harmful for your

  866. body but maybe a disease has nothing to

  867. do with that and it's just part of the

  868. broken world world and God still in

  869. control of both of those versions but we

  870. ought not to assume that someone has a

  871. disease because they sinned see what I'm

  872. saying John the Apostle talks about that

  873. when he quotes Jesus word to a friend is

  874. this man blind because he sinned and

  875. Jesus says no but it's for the glory of

  876. God so again why does God do things for

  877. what purpose does he do all things yes

  878. all the calamities all well-being every

  879. random event let's continue let's go to

  880. Proverbs 21 because this is getting a

  881. little bit closer to humans in fact as

  882. close as you can possibly get the king's

  883. heart this is Proverbs 211 the king's

  884. heart is a stream of water in the hand

  885. of the Lord and he turns it wherever he

  886. Wills wherever he will so what what is

  887. the heart well biblically the heart is

  888. like the epicenter of who you are it's

  889. where your desires come from it's it's

  890. not even like our desires is what drives

  891. our will right if we let the flesh reign

  892. then we desire to do evil but if we let

  893. the spirit reain then from the heart we

  894. desire to do good but it's God that has

  895. to do something to give us a new heart

  896. without that new heart you don't have

  897. the desire so part of what God is saying

  898. here is that the very epicenter like the

  899. control center of the decision-making

  900. process of a human being the innermost

  901. places are like a stream in the hands of

  902. the Lord and He directs it wherever he

  903. Wills let's go to an example of that

  904. Exodus

    Exodus 4:21

  905. 4:21 a difficult example of this Exodus

    Exodus 4:21

  906. 4:21 said this is the first time that it

  907. comes up in the whole book of Exodus and

  908. the Lord said to Moses when you go back

  909. to Egypt see that you do before Pharaoh

  910. a different Pharaoh whom they didn't

  911. have favor with hated and oppressed the

  912. Egyptians see that you do before Pharaoh

  913. all the Miracles that I've put in your

  914. power and now You' think and I'll change

  915. his heart so that he lets the Israelites

  916. go no but I will harden his heart so

  917. that he will not let the people go like

  918. a stream does whatever he wants now uh

  919. because I hate when my view is strawman

  920. and I don't like when someone straw mans

  921. my view I think we ought to be as

  922. careful to say what Christians are

  923. wanting to be represented by so Exodus

    Exodus 8:15

  924. 8:15 most certainly says that Pharaoh

  925. also hardens his own heart listen to

  926. this but when Pharaoh saw that there was

  927. respit from a plague he hardened his

  928. heart and would not listen to him but

  929. then we get the verse as the Lord had

  930. said so Moses is the author of both

  931. Genesis and exodus but whose will is

  932. being highlighted as the one that that

  933. caused the thing God's I'll Harden his

  934. heart and therefore pharaoh to hardened

  935. his heart but Pharaoh really did Harden

  936. his heart and that's a clue to the idea

  937. whether uh human beings can make

  938. decisions that matter it's not a slam

  939. dunk yet though let's continue verse

  940. Exodus

    Exodus 9:16

  941. 9:16 but for this purpose I have raised

  942. you up so I may show my power so that my

  943. name may be proclaimed in all the Earth

  944. why did God Harden Pharaoh's heart

  945. why does he direct the hearts of Kings

  946. the way he does why is he in control of

  947. all random events and all calamities and

  948. all good things for his glory that's

  949. what it means that his name would be

  950. proclaimed in all the Earth so the very

  951. purpose that I believe and convicted

  952. that the Bible continues to point to for

  953. Why God does what he does is always his

  954. glory to make himself look glorious if

  955. anybody else did that it' be

  956. megalomaniacal but he's actually worthy

  957. to be shown His Glory by glor glorious

  958. by himself we want that we don't want

  959. any power corrupts and absolute power

  960. corrupts absolutely except for with God

  961. absolute powerful absolute power

  962. glorifies absolutely when it comes to

  963. God and he's about his glory and you

  964. will all you can always know in all

  965. situations that the way that God is

  966. controlling something is for His glory

  967. that's a very important thing to know

  968. biblically let's continue um is God even

  969. in control of evil and of evil person

  970. is God in control of Satan let's look at

  971. that so let's go to 2 Samuel 24:

  972. one again the anger of the Lord was

  973. kindled against Israel and he incited

  974. David against them saying go number

  975. Israel and Judah by the way it was

  976. against God's will that he would number

  977. Israel and Judah and he judges him for

  978. it but he incites him to do it so God we

  979. know God tests and he does not tempt but

  980. we also know God knows that David's

  981. going to fail the test test and battle

  982. hardened Thug of a general job TOS him

  983. joab tolds him don't do it why would you

  984. do this thing what's it about

  985. well God has over and over again in the

  986. history of people of God uh shown them

  987. that it's not by the might of their

  988. armies but the might of his right hand

  989. so he's even told stories that David

  990. would have certainly known remember

  991. Gideon he kept whittling away gon

  992. Gideon's Army until he only had 300

  993. people just to show that it's not by the

  994. might of these people but it's that my

  995. might that you're going to Route this

  996. vastly Superior and larger army they

  997. know that so counting and doing a census

  998. of your armies is from the intent to see

  999. how powerful your army is rather than

1000. really trusting the lord it's a sin

1001. against the Lord that God incited him to

1002. do so you'd be like well this is sounds

1003. dangerous it sounds like the God's the

1004. one that caused the sin here but let's

1005. read SEC 1 Chronicles 211 about the

1006. exact same event then Satan stood

1007. against Israel and incited David to

1008. number Israel it's not two different

1009. events you can read the accounts again 2

  1010. Samuel and 1st Chronicles uh 24 and 21

1011. respectively so what do you make of that

1012. you know uh liberal Bible scholars and

1013. atheists and agnostics alike this is a

1014. famous example of a a contradiction in

  1015. the Bible I don't believe there's any

1016. contradiction here can you work it out

1017. in your mind how this works how did God

  1018. incite David using

1019. Satan using Satan did you know that God

1020. can use Satan in that way for his own

1021. purposes of judgment and mercy it's

1022. unbelievable that's a very high view of

  1023. God's sovereignty and I can continue

1024. showing that you think oh man um that uh

1025. sounds crazy and actually I'm looking at

1026. my my text notes here and I'm I'm not

1027. sure if I actually have the exact

  1028. quotations but I'm almost positive it's

1029. in in Kings uh Greg if you're back there

1030. if you can look up the passage of the

  1031. lying spirit and I don't know if you'll

1032. be able to display it but then at least

1033. I can give you the verse uh so that you

1034. can look at it what happens and and I

  1035. wish I had recorded I don't know why I

1036. didn't but what happens is that um uh

1037. King Jehoshaphat is being judged for

1038. constantly listening to false prophets

1039. and Micaiah tells him of an episode that

1040. he saw in a vision of God in heaven um

1041. asking who will uh go and do his will

1042. and one looks this way one looks that

  1043. we're assuming Angels but then there's

1044. this spirit it's called a spirit and

1045. that's important not it's not called an

1046. angel uh says I will go and entice and

1047. and uh entice the prophets against uh

1048. against him against Jehoshaphat and God

1049. Says by what means and he says I will

1050. put a lie in the mouths of His prophets

1051. and then God says and again I'm

1052. paraphrasing here hopefully we'll have

1053. it up in a minute uh but it's very close

1054. to the story and God says okay good do

1055. that and he gives him success in doing

1056. it and then it says God was the one that

  1057. sent the lying

1058. Spirit very difficult passages did God

1059. lie no God never lies absolute

1060. conviction God never sins in him it's

1061. all light and there is no Darkness have

1062. to believe that those are certainties

1063. and yet here it said he's sending a

  1064. lying

1065. spirit so who is to blame the lying

1066. Spirit we know Angels wouldn't lie

1067. angels are sinless if they sin they're

  1068. demons so again he's using a

1069. demon right let me show you another

1070. thing because job often comes up in the

1071. um discussion about this about this

1072. thing and uh I I'll set it up we're

1073. going to be going to Job 1 21-22 but I'm

1074. not reading it just yet what happens is

1075. that it turns out Satan has come before

1076. God in his court and um God God's the

1077. one that first mentions have you

1078. considered my servant job how righteous

1079. he is and Satan basically says well he's

1080. only righteous because you've given him

1081. so much and God knows that's not true

1082. this righteousness is by faith um and

1083. it's not just by whatever blessings he's

1084. been given uh then Satan says well let

1085. me you know kill his whole family let me

1086. destroy destroy everything that he has

1087. and we'll see if he actually still

1088. follows you and here and still loves you

  1089. and here's job 1:

1090. 21-22 and he said naked I came this is

1091. job speaking naked I came from my

1092. mother's womb and naked shall I return

1093. the lord gave and the Lord has taken

1094. away blessed be the name of the

1095. Lord it was definitely Satan that killed

1096. his whole family and destroyed

1097. everything he owned definitely who does

1098. job assign it to God furthermore verse

  1099. chapter 13:1 15-16 listen to

1100. this though he slay me I will hope in

1101. him he's not talking about Satan he's

1102. talking about God and I will argue to my

1103. ways to his face this will be my

1104. salvation that the Godless shall not

1105. come before him so he's he's saying

1106. listen I know it was God that saved

1107. slayed me I know it was God that did it

1108. and yet I'm going to hope in him but I'm

1109. going to argue to his face and so he

1110. continues arguing face and if you know

1111. the story of Job he either becomes

1112. dangerously close or he goes actually to

  1113. the point where he's distrusting God's

1114. will because it's not fair because he

1115. didn't do anything unrighteous to

1116. deserve it and God shows up in a

1117. whirlwind and what does he

1118. say not that job has too low of a view

1119. of his sovereignty but that he doesn't

1120. have a high enough view of his

1121. sovereignty did you make the ostrich

1122. egg did you hang the sun moon and stars

1123. in their orbit and also if you did what

  1124. did they hung on

1125. to this day scientists do not understand

1126. what gravity really is I think if we did

1127. it's possible that we might be able to

1128. harness it but we can't yet we don't

1129. understand it to this day with all our

1130. modern methods of scientific discovery

1131. God still says did you hang the sun moon

  1132. and

1133. stars God sustains the reaction of the

1134. sun which is bigger than all the nuclear

1135. weapons we could ever compile he's so

1136. great in his sovereignty and so powerful

1137. and his concern with what job said is

1138. not that he's assigning too much control

1139. to God but not enough and when job hears

1140. it he calls himself ignorant though

1141. though I perceived with my mind I now

1142. see with my eyes and he repents repents

1143. of having too low of a view of God's

1144. sovereignty that says God can only do

1145. something that's bad in your life if

  1146. you've done something specifically

1147. deserve it not true turns out God God

1148. used suff suffering instrumentally in a

1149. way that to paraphrase Romans 9 ends up

1150. leading to Hope here it is uh what it's

  1151. it's First Kings 2:22 I'm going to go

    1 Kings 2:22

1152. ahead and read it because I want you to

1153. see how close what I was saying is

1154. actually what he says and you can make

1155. up your mind the Lord said to him by

1156. what means and he said I will go out and

1157. I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of

1158. His prophets and he said you are to

1159. entice him and you shall succeed go and

1160. do so do you have one do you have verse

1161. 23 cuz that's where God actually says he

1162. he sent him but either way you say you

1163. see what it's actually saying so what I

1164. believe that leads to in a view of God's

1165. sovereignty is that God however powerful

1166. Satan and his demons are God is

1167. infinitely more Sovereign and can use

1168. him for whatever purpose he wants to

1169. even if that means killing a righteous

1170. Man's family and no wonder job argued

1171. right it's not fair he says he knows

1172. God's Sovereign he knows God did it but

1173. he says it's not not fair how is this

1174. fair and it makes us wonder you know do

1175. we have any free will do human beings

1176. have free will and this is probably

1177. maybe even more so than anything I've

1178. said here where some of you may disagree

1179. and I just ask listen to the actual

1180. words of scripture and then make up your

1181. mind is there something there I haven't

1182. yet seen or do I disagree with the way

1183. it's being handled um but to be really

1184. honest I don't believe the Bible in any

1185. verse whatsoever ever says that our

1186. human will is autonomously free in in

1187. fact I think it says the opposite that

1188. our will is enslaved to sin and that we

1189. cannot break out of that sin apart from

1190. God breaking us out of it now I just

1191. said that but Paul also says that let's

1192. go to Romans 6 uh 17 um and we'll go all

  1193. the way through

  1194. 23 um let's see yeah I think it is 617

1195. yeah but thanks be to God that you who

1196. were once slaves of sin what's a Slave

1197. certainly not someone that's free right

1198. someone that's enslaved you know what it

1199. is means they're captured by it they're

1200. ens snared by it they can't get out once

1201. slaves of sin have become obedient from

1202. the heart to the standard of teaching to

1203. which you were committed and having been

1204. set free from sin the word free here is

1205. assigned to God's work you were set free

1206. you didn't set yourself free from sin

  1207. have become slaves to

  1208. righteousness I mean you're switching

1209. Masters when you come to

1210. Faith so what else does it say about our

1211. freedom I am speak speaking in human

1212. terms because of your natural

  1213. limitations I'm included and Paul's

1214. included in those natural limitations

1215. but Paul had a lot revealed to him and a

1216. lot to say for just as you once

1217. presented your members as slaves to

1218. impurity and to lawlessness leading to

1219. more lawlessness so now present your

1220. members as slaves to righteousness

1221. leading to sanctification for when you

1222. were slaves of sin you were free in

  1223. regards to

1224. righteousness have you ever read that

1225. have you ever seen that you're slaves to

1226. sin in your will and you're free from

1227. righteousness I don't see that and think

1228. we're autonomously free to do whatever

1229. we want apart from God you're stuck in

1230. sin your will is in bondage and he has

1231. to break it free and you're free from

1232. goodness that's what righteousness means

1233. you're free from being justified before

1234. him you're free from doing the right

1235. thing and that is no Freedom at all that

1236. is slavery to sin verse 21 but what

1237. fruit were you getting at that time from

1238. the things which you are now ashamed for

1239. the end of those things is death

1240. but now that you have been set free from

1241. sin and have become slaves of God the

1242. fruit you get leads to sanctification

1243. and its end eternal life for the wages

1244. of sin is death and the free gift of God

1245. is eternal life in Christ Jesus our lord

1246. and so so now you you might be asking

1247. well if you're claiming that our will or

1248. if you think Paul is claiming or if

1249. indeed Paul actually is claiming and

1250. therefore God claiming that our will is

1251. not only not free but it's in bondage to

1252. sin and slavery to sin and the only

1253. thing we're free from is righteousness

1254. in our unsaved State and that God has to

1255. do something all by himself to break us

1256. out of that and then our will is not

1257. spoken of as free per se it's spoken of

1258. as slave to righteousness and that we

1259. need to continue entrusting ourselves to

1260. another Master again highlighting God's

1261. control so if that's true then then how

1262. could a human being ever be found guilty

  1263. for

1264. something don't you have to have some

1265. kind of amount of freedom so that it's

1266. your fault and not God's fault who has

1267. all the freedom to cause you to do

1268. whatever you do well here's the deal I

1269. want to affirm something that it says in

1270. Galatians this is really important I

1271. think to believe because it's so

1272. definite it says in Galatians 5 or

1273. excuse me Galatians 6:7 do not be

    Galatians 6:7

1274. deceived God is Not mocked for whatever

1275. one SWS that he also will reap for the

1276. one who SWS to his own flesh will from

1277. his flesh reap corruption but the one

1278. who SWS the spirit will from the spirit

  1279. reap eternal

1280. life and I can show you many more verses

1281. that show just how consequential our

1282. decisions are that they are eternally

1283. consequential but over and over and over

1284. again what the scriptures what God wants

1285. to highlight is that his will is in

1286. control even of all of our choices so

1287. your choices matter I want to show you

1288. how that applies to the Cross towards

1289. the end of the sermon your choices do

1290. matter but let's say Okay so you're

1291. saying that God is the one in control of

1292. choices well are you saying that we

1293. can't even receive Christ that we can't

1294. even freely choose him well just let's

1295. listen to what Jesus said John 6:44 no

    John 6:44

1296. one can come to me unless the father

1297. sends uh sent him excuse me no one can

1298. come to me unless the father who sent me

1299. draws him and I will raise him up on the

1300. last day what is that highlighting our

1301. freedom from the state of our ens

1302. slavery to sin to just decide to come to

1303. God or is that highlighting that God has

1304. to First draw us again over and over and

1305. over again in my understanding of

1306. scripture and I have studied this

  1307. extensively it's it's not like a New

  1308. Concept it's been something I've been

1309. fascinated with all my life and I used

1310. to disagree with what I say today I used

1311. to disagree strongly angrily actually uh

1312. wi with with what I say now but I've

1313. just looked at the verses and no matter

1314. how hard they are to believe I look at

  1315. that I'm like it's clearly hiding God's

1316. will as primary as the one that's

1317. Sovereign it's saying that our will is

1318. enslaved to sin is saying that God has

1319. to break us free and once we break us

1320. free he is our master so this Freedom

1321. that we want this autonomous Freedom

1322. that I think is oftentimes claimed uh

1323. Without Really deeply considering what

1324. the scripture actually says if it is

  1325. deeply considered great that's good I

1326. affirm that but sometimes without even

1327. it's kind of just what you've heard

1328. right I think that desire for autonomous

1329. freedom is really related to Pride we

1330. want to be autonomously free from God we

1331. want to be the choosers and he's the

1332. Chooser and we're the Beggars it still

1333. doesn't mean and I will come back to

1334. this even more deeply towards the end of

1335. the sermon because you'll see that God

1336. says something very powerful through

1337. Luke in acts in Acts 2:22 about his

    Acts 2:22

1338. sovereignty over the cross and yet human

1339. culpability so let me let me summarize

1340. shortly what I've said um I believe that

1341. scripture and not just these verses but

1342. lots more claims that God is in control

1343. of all good and bad things that happen

  1344. well-being and Calamity I believe that

1345. there is no such thing as random chance

1346. but that God controls all random chance

1347. and it was actually a way that the

1348. Israelites made decisions by eliminating

1349. human bias I also believe that God is in

1350. charge at the of the very

1351. decision-making center of the human

1352. heart not just Kings but every single

1353. person and that he gives us examples of

1354. how he did that in ways that ought to

1355. make you feel very uncomfortable it's

1356. uncomfortable to hear you know you think

1357. of all Pharaoh's evil so it's okay that

1358. he hardened his heart but that was

1359. somebody's son that was that was he had

1360. a mother you know so you have to ask

1361. yourself the question how can he still

1362. find fault and the way that I look at

1363. that the best metaphor that I've ever

1364. thought of and I'm not even sure it's

1365. mine I may have heard it somewhere but

1366. not consciously knowing that is that

1367. he's the author and we're the characters

1368. it was Anakin it was Darth Vader who

1369. killed the Younglings not George Lucas

1370. or allenan Foster but Allan and or Lucas

1371. wrote the story God wrote the he's the

1372. author of life he knows every one of the

1373. hairs of your head and he is ordained

1374. every single day for you in advance I

1375. said we'll go back to that because it

1376. reflects there's something about the

1377. cross that I think is probably the

  1378. deepest understanding of God's

1379. sovereignty and human will and will come

1380. back to it but I I believe Joseph knew

1381. this I believe you can't really claim

1382. that it was not them who sent not his

1383. brothers but God without knowing that

1384. God's will is primary and

1385. determinative and God sent me before you

1386. to preserve life for you in a Remnant

1387. and a Remnant um verse chapter 25:7

1388. again and to keep keep alive for you

1389. many survivors so although his will is

1390. to glorify himself his will is also good

1391. and it's good for us so it's not you who

1392. sent me here verse 8 but God he has made

1393. me a father to pharaoh and Lord of all

1394. his house and ruler over all the land of

1395. Egypt hurry and go up to my father and

1396. say to him thus says your son Joseph God

1397. has made me the Lord of all Egypt come

1398. down to me do not t you shall dwell in

1399. the land of Goan you shall be near me

1400. you and your children and your

1401. children's children and your flocks and

1402. your herds and all that you have there I

1403. will provide for you for there are yet 5

1404. years of famine to come so that you and

1405. your household and all that that you

1406. have do not come to

1407. Poverty his household by the way

1408. includes all of the brothers it's like

1409. the whole tribe of Israel at this point

1410. with him as the the current patriarch

1411. and look how much care and urgency to

1412. show that care that Joseph has for all

1413. of them for all of

1414. them so when I say that trusting God's

1415. Sovereign goodness leads to loving God

1416. you can feel the love that Joseph has

1417. for God even though God sovereignly

1418. chose to have him enslaved in

1419. Egypt did God also sovereignly choose to

1420. have them put unjustly in prison yes

1421. whose fault was it well Piper's wife

1422. definitely and also potier because he

1423. just tried to wash his hands of it you

1424. know it's like no you need to

  1425. investigate whether that's really

1426. actually true and not just let your

1427. anger re there but Joseph just kept

1428. looking at that like what people meant

1429. for evil God meant for good that's how

1430. high and deep his trust in God's his

1431. View and Trust of God's sovereignty was

1432. so he he's he loves God and it's he

1433. loves God's sovereignty and trusts his

1434. goodness he's aligned with that purpose

1435. and it gives him the power to love other

1436. people because he's part of the purpose

1437. he was sent for the very purpose to care

  1438. for

1439. them it's so powerful verse uh 12 and

1440. now your eyes see and your the eyes of

1441. my brother Benjamin see that it is my

1442. mouth that speaks to you you must tell

1443. my father of all my honor in Egypt and

1444. of all that you have seen hurry and

1445. bring my father down here and he fell

1446. upon his brother Benjamin's neck and

1447. wept and Benjamin wept upon his neck and

1448. he kissed all his brothers and wept upon

1449. them after that his brothers talked with

1450. him so at this point they're even

1451. convinced that he's really forgiven them

1452. they were dismayed to talk to him they

1453. were distressed they had to be told

1454. don't be distressed don't be angry with

1455. yourself and now you know they're deeply

1456. moved and willing to talk with him and

  1457. come

1458. close and when the report was heard in

1459. PHA house Joseph's brothers have come it

1460. pleased pharaoh and his servants and

1461. Pharaoh said to Joseph say to your

1462. brothers do this load your beasts and go

1463. back to the land of Canaan and take your

1464. father and your household and households

1465. and come to me and I will give you the

1466. best of the land of Egypt and you shall

1467. eat the fat of the land when's the last

1468. time you've heard the president or ruler

1469. or dictator or whatever kind of leader

1470. give the best of the land to the most

1471. abominable people in their View and you

1472. know Nations do hate whole people groups

1473. throughout the entire history America

1474. did that with slavery Germany did that

1475. with Jews sometimes they do it with

1476. their own people like Mao in China or

1477. Stalin in in uh uh in in in Russia but

1478. you might think what's he talking about

1479. well just turn to the very

1480. um uh oh my goodness I'm I'm missing the

1481. verse again here but it it it's it says

1482. that the uh that that Hebrews were an

1483. Abomination to Egyptians and that

1484. Shepherds were too and they're Hebrews

1485. and Shepherds okay so they they they

1486. couldn't even eat with them and yet the

1487. Pharaoh is giving them the best of the

1488. land you know I still think that the

1489. fact that pastors have like a tax

1490. deduction that allows them to allow

1491. small churches to be able to float uh a

1492. pastor's boat so to speak is

1493. unbelievable favor you see how how our

1494. is turning against that it's

1495. unbelievable favor that God has ordained

1496. for the church in America too and it's

1497. supernatural it's not what naturally

1498. happens Jesus says they will hate you

  1499. because they hated me

1500. first right so it's un again God's

1501. sovereignty is on display the fact that

1502. Pharaoh gives a people that Egyptians

1503. find abominable basically that even to

1504. eat with them as Abomination uh gives

1505. them the best of the land unbelievable

1506. shall eat the fat of the land next verse

1507. and this is what Joseph is giving them

1508. great very loving and generous of him

1509. and you Joseph are commanded to say well

1510. this Pharaoh through Joseph giving him

1511. are commanded to say do this take wagons

1512. from the land of Egypt for your little

1513. ones and for your wives and bring your

1514. father and come have no concern for your

1515. goods for the best of all the land of

1516. Egypt is yours and the sons of Israel

1517. did so and Joseph gave them wagons

1518. according to the command of pharaoh and

1519. gave them Provisions for the journey to

1520. each and all of them he gave a change of

1521. clothes but Benjamin he gave 300 shekel

1522. of Sil silver and five changes of

1523. clothes I just want to mention something

1524. here because I wondered oh is he just

1525. passing on the favoritism there and it's

1526. just again we've talked about

  1527. interpretive senses I don't think that's

1528. what happening the principle that I draw

1529. from this is that although God can you

1530. use even your sin for your good it's

1531. still better to obey and the blessings

1532. of obedience are far greater they're

1533. also undeserved than the undeserved

1534. blessings of Disobedience and you say

1535. blessings of Disobedience it's not your

1536. Disobedience that God is blessing it's

1537. in spite of our Disobedience that he's

1538. blessing us right so it's still better

1539. to be obedient and Benjamin was not one

1540. of the ones that had ever sold him into

1541. slavery verse 24 then he sent his

1542. brothers away and as they departed he

1543. said to themo not quarrel on the

1544. way have you ever cared that much for

1545. someone that sinned against you it's

1546. such a shining example to me it makes me

1547. think what's my inner attitude towards

1548. people that have hurt me in the

1549. past when when I see them quarreling

1550. with somebody am I kind of happy well

  1551. that's what you

1552. get that's not being aligned with God's

1553. Sovereign goodness at all he is so

1554. aligned with Sovereign goodness that the

1555. ones that trafficked him he's now

1556. concerned that they wouldn't fight

1557. amongst each other and he knows them he

1558. just recently saw Reuben try to get like

1559. blame the brothers for the whole problem

1560. when Ruben was also one that lied he he

1561. he knows they're going to quarrel about

1562. it cuz they I told you you shouldn't

1563. have done this you know who knows what

1564. he's going to do to us he says don't

  1565. quarrel he's a The Peacemaker blessed

1566. are the peacemakers so they went up out

1567. of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan

1568. to their father Jacob and they told him

1569. Joseph is still alive and he is the

1570. ruler over all the land of Egypt and his

1571. heart became numb for he did not believe

1572. them have you have you ever experienced

  1573. something that's so emotionally

1574. overwhelming that your heart becomes

1575. numb what what pulls you out of

1576. that how do you get out of something

  1577. that

  1578. sort of

1579. like it's like way too much electricity

1580. through the circuits and they're just

1581. fried and you're just numb you don't

1582. even know what to say this is what he's

1583. exper if you've ever experienced that

  1584. like it's it's too much I can't even

1585. feel the things I'm feeling because it's

  1586. all sensory

1587. overload and he doesn't believe them he

  1588. can't he doesn't want to believe it's

  1589. too good to be

1590. true but when they told him all the

1591. words of Joseph which he had said to

1592. them and when he saw the wagons that

1593. Joseph had sent to carry him wagons

1594. which God sovereignly ordained for

1595. Pharaoh the king of the Egyptians who

1596. find Hebrews abominate abominable and

  1597. Shepherds

1598. too when he saw the wagons that Joseph

1599. had sent to carry him the spirit of

1600. their father Jacob revived and Israel

1601. said it is enough Joseph my son is alive

1602. I will go and I will see him before I

1603. die man I hope some faithful Christian

1604. director someday makes a story of this

1605. it would be an unbelievable movie if

1606. they didn't just you know I watched that

1607. movie about Noah and I've never heard

1608. that story before so oh man the one with

1609. Russell Crow Rock Angels what a bunch of

  1610. nonsense but I don't know why Satan's in

1611. control of Hollywood that's for sure but

1612. God's in control of Satan isn't he and

1613. how would you want it any other way

1614. would would you you know how good God

1615. is he's perfect and so we want him to be

1616. in control now I want you to think about

1617. because we're talking about evil things

1618. that have happened and whether God's in

1619. control what is the most evil thing that

1620. has ever occurred on Earth and

1621. Christians should all only have one

1622. answer and there should be no debate

  1623. it's crucifying

1624. Jesus the only perfect one the only

1625. righteous one God In the Flesh the only

1626. intent of his heart is to forgive us of

1627. our sin and atone for it and so we kill

1628. them I say we but let's go to who

1629. actually did it first let's go to acts

  1630. chap 222 through 23

1631. just a second I turned to the wrong page

  1632. Acts 2

1633. 22-23 says this men of Israel as Peter

1634. speaking hear these words Jesus of

1635. Nazareth a man attested to you by God

1636. with Mighty works and wonders and signs

1637. that God did through him in your midst

1638. as you yourself know this Jesus

1639. delivered up according to the definite

1640. plan and forn knowledge of God you

1641. crucified and killed by the hands of

1642. Lawless men let's go back for a moment

1643. and this is a place where um you could

1644. return to the sermon or write a note

1645. here um because actually sometimes we

1646. need to do word studies in order to

1647. understand what words actually mean and

1648. be sure that we're not saying they mean

1649. something that they don't or missing

1650. what they actually mean uh the word

1651. definite here in Greek is harito and you

1652. look it up it means

  1653. predetermined it means decided

1654. beforehand planned it out for knowledge

  1655. interestingly is prognos

1656. which is the word where we get prognosis

1657. from and when you're speaking of human

  1658. beings a doctor's prognosis is something

1659. like a prediction of what will most

1660. likely happen statistically with the

1661. disease that you have based on all of

1662. the evidence of what happened with

1663. disease to other people but it's just a

1664. prediction and they don't know that that

  1665. will happen and they're I don't know if

  1666. they're often wrong but they're

1667. definitely sometimes wrong is that how

1668. God forn knows like could it happen

1669. differently than he forn knows or is his

  1670. knowledge forn

1671. perfect it's another thing you have to

1672. consider because it doesn't just say

1673. predetermined It also says forn

1674. knowledge with forn knowledge you could

1675. say well he knew what was going to

1676. happen um and uh was reacting to it or

1677. you can realize actually if God knew it

1678. to happen and for before it happened it

1679. can't happen any other way it's already

1680. predetermined just by the fact that he

1681. for knew it because his forn knowledge

1682. is perfect but on top of it it says

  1683. harito

1684. harito Boule that's that means

  1685. predetermined plan definite plan

  1686. pre-planned

1687. it couldn't happen any other way and yet

  1688. who's to

1689. blame what does it say delivered up

1690. according to the definite plan and forn

1691. knowledge of God even Jesus asked us

1692. that another way three times with three

1693. implied no answers and then submitted

1694. his soul you crucified and killed by the

1695. hands of LA men who's you the Pharisees

1696. and the Jews who were screaming crucify

1697. who's the Lawless men pilate who washed

1698. his hands of the Injustice as if somehow

1699. he wasn't part of it but still gave the

1700. order and gave him over and then

1701. soldiers did you know that some of those

1702. soldiers came to Faith do you know that

1703. some of the Pharisees came to Faith so

  1704. what they did was

1705. murder and God was forgiving their

1706. murder in their act of

  1707. murder the greatest Injustice

1708. on the part of human beings killing the

1709. Lord Of Glory is the greatest example of

  1710. God's justice there's no justice apart

1711. from the cross there's no way to be

1712. justified apart from the cross I don't

1713. know that there is a verse in Scripture

1714. that shows better the relationship

1715. between God's sovereignty and human will

1716. God definitely predetermined it he

1717. definitely brought it about he planned

1718. it and forew it couldn't happen any

1719. other way there was no other plan there

1720. was no other possibility who's guilty

1721. for it you and what does it say right

1722. after that you crucified and killed by

1723. the hands of Lot's men God raised him up

1724. loosing the pangs of death because it

1725. was not possible for him to be held by

1726. it God resurrects him can't be held by

  1727. the

1728. death and why I was saying that we were

1729. the ones that crucified Jesus is that it

1730. was our sin that required it it was our

1731. slavery to sin that required it now you

1732. might say we haven't mentioned Adam and

  1733. Eve

1734. weren't they free yeah and what did they

  1735. choose to do

1736. Sin from a perfect State we chose to sin

1737. that's what we did in Adam and Eve and

  1738. we're all

1739. included and what did God choose to do

1740. send his son to die for our

1741. sin the very Act of greatest evil the

1742. greatest Injustice the most sinful thing

1743. we could possibly carry out becomes our

  1744. Salvation I don't know anything that

  1745. displays God's sovereignty more and I'm

1746. not afraid to submit to it I don't have

1747. to work it all out it's not my problem

1748. that God determines all things and that

1749. your choices matter and that mine does

1750. too it's too high for me but it's what I

1751. believe scripture says you say it's

1752. impossible everything in our face

1753. impossible God's Not a Human Being yes

1754. he's a human being God is completely

1755. human and completely God in Jesus

1756. Christ God can't be made to be sin and

1757. yet he made him sin who knew no sin so

1758. that in him we could become the

1759. righteousness of God God is

1760. one but the scripture says the holy

1761. spirit is God the scripture says Jesus

1762. is God the scripture says God the father

1763. is God so is God three or one he's both

1764. they're both true your your faith has so

1765. many parad is that you can't work out so

1766. why not just one more and if you come to

1767. communion today with the same heart

1768. Joseph had the same heart that Paul has

1769. the heart of surrender to God's

1770. sovereignty all the way down and the

1771. belief and conviction that is unshakable

1772. that he's still all the way good and

1773. that every one of his Sovereign Act is

1774. in the service of his glory and his love

1775. man the cross the communion is is the

1776. best example for that so you can bring

1777. you can bring your freedom which was

1778. freedom from righteousness to the Cross

1779. you can bring the places where you feel

1780. like you're stuck and you can't get out

1781. of it even as a Christian there's times

1782. where we get stuck back in a pattern of

1783. sin and we just Paul talks about it he

1784. doesn't want to covet he know that

1785. covets wrong he agrees with the law that

1786. coveting is wrong and that being

1787. satisfied is right but then he just

1788. keeps coveting keeps coveting over and

1789. over and over again says

1790. whoo right how will I be saved from this

  1791. body of death

1792. and is through Jesus Christ Our Lord for

1793. in him there is no condemnation and

1794. there's no condemnation of you either so

1795. today again if you remember nothing else

1796. when you come to communion is that

1797. trusting God's Sovereign goodness leads

1798. to loving God which leads to loving

1799. others and somewhere in there all of us

1800. need to realign ourselves so I want to

1801. pray for you that you would again if you

1802. want to talk about this if you want to

1803. learn more about it if you want to

1804. disagree um you can take that to the

1805. Lord you can meet with me but either way

1806. we all know that there is sin in our

1807. life that needs to be redeemed and the

1808. cross is for that very thing the

1809. greatest display of God's sovereignty

1810. and human culpability in all existence

1811. let me pray heavenly father thank you

1812. for the opportunity to just look at such

1813. deep things even when we sometimes

1814. disagree thank you that you teach us

1815. through your word and thank you more

1816. importantly something that every one of

1817. us can agree on deeply all the way is

  1818. that

1819. your cross Jesus is the only way to be

1820. forgiven of sin both for people yet

1821. unsaved and for people already saved we

1822. still just draw in the blood of Christ

1823. for the Forgiveness of our

1824. sins I pray that you would draw us as a

1825. community and as individuals to the

1826. table of communion today to your Lord's

1827. Supper as we come during these next

1828. songs I pray that you would Minister To

1829. Us by your spirit show us the ways our

1830. heart are not aligned with your

1831. Sovereign will show us the doubts we

1832. have about your goodness help our souls

1833. to surrender to a faithful Creator once

1834. again I pray all these things in Jesus

  1835. name amen
