  1. Good morning.

  2. Welcome to Boon Fairy if you're new. And

  3. uh whether you're new or been attending

  4. for a while, we love to hear from you

  5. either in a prayer request, which we

  6. pray for every Wednesday, or just for

  7. your information and uh so we can

  8. connect with you and share. We send out

  9. an e- bulletin with just about only

  10. really important information. It's

  11. actually worth reading because there's

  12. just almost nothing we report on there

  13. that you probably wouldn't want to know

  14. or be informed about. And this is the

  15. way to get connected to that. You can

  16. turn these in at the connection table.

  17. If you never have and you're new, uh we

  18. have a gift card for you just as a way

  19. of showing our excitement that you're

  20. here. You're very welcome at Boon Fairy

  21. and I hope you feel like you just become

  22. part of the family. Really quickly, um

  23. another announcement I want to make, as

  24. you know, it's Palm Sunday today and

  25. that means it's Easter next weekend and

  26. um that includes Good Friday. Not every

  27. church does a Good Friday service. Uh I

  28. think we do one for for really one major

  29. reason and it's not church historical

  30. tradition or the church uh calendar but

  31. it's that we think it's a really good

  32. thing to focus on the cross before we

  33. focus on the resurrection. Uh there is

  34. no resurrection without the cross and we

  35. need to be thinking about that. And so

  36. the good Friday service if you've never

  37. attended one it's a very somber service

  38. very reflective service. There is no

  39. sermon. It's a lot of reading of

  40. scripture and some of you will be tasked

  41. to read that or already have and it's a

  42. lot of worship songs and um and then and

  43. then you walk out in that reflective

  44. sorrow so to speak and I've noticed that

  45. when and I always come but when I come

  46. to a good Friday service I um the the

  47. joy on Sunday is even greater because

  48. I've considered the sorrow and the pain

  49. that uh was required of our savior in

  50. the cross. So we we welcome you to that

  51. that we've changed the time. I don't

  52. know if you even remember what the time

  53. was last year, but usually around 4:00

  54. or 4:30 and a lot of people been talking

  55. about we really want to come, but it's

  56. just too early to get off work and it's

  57. it's hard especially no dinner or

  58. anything like that. So, we changed it to

  59. 6:30. Hopefully, that's a good time for

  60. you. You're very welcome to come to that

  61. and as well to invite uh anyone and

  62. everyone. I mean, I I've known people

  63. that have come to faith just from

  64. hearing the scriptures read out loud.

  65. Um, and the same thing goes, but maybe

  66. even more so with Easter. Um, Easter

  67. will not be a sermon on Genesis. It will

  68. just be a presentation of the gospel in

  69. a way that's directly related to the

  70. death and resurrection of our Lord. It's

  71. a great time to invite friends that

  72. maybe you've been already witnessing to

  73. yourself, as you should be. But, um,

  74. even if you haven't, inviting them to

  75. the church is one way that they might

  76. hear the gospel in the first place. and

  77. and non-Christians or Christians who

  78. need to recommmit their faith and their

  79. their walk to the Lord will often times

  80. be um willing to come on Easter. So, it

  81. might be a little bit more of an

  82. effective invitation than normal. Last

  83. um uh thing that I want to talk about is

  84. um I got to meet with Brett this week.

  85. For those of you who don't know who

  86. Brett is, he's the pastor of Athe Creek

  87. Christian Fellowship. Uh it's really

  88. just up the road on the other side of I5

  89. from that Stafford roundabout over

  90. there. I think that's that's Wiker's

  91. Corner. Um but um it's it's probably the

  92. largest church in Oregon and it's very

  93. trustworthy church which is not always

  94. the case with giant churches as you

  95. probably know. Um but it was a really

  96. great time meeting with him and a little

  97. funny story. I was telling a friend

  98. afterwards who I meet with pretty

  99. regularly who attends a he was kind of

  100. excited that I was meeting with Brett

  101. and so I called him and I said, "Hey, I

  102. met with Brett. I'm kind of a big deal

  103. now." And he said, "Did you touch him?"

  104. I haven't even I haven't even touched

  105. him yet. Since he laughed at that one,

  106. I'll tell you what Dan said. Although

  107. Dan, I didn't get permission, but it

  108. makes you look hilarious. So anyway, I

  109. was telling Dan that exact story, and he

  110. goes, "Well, if you didn't touch him or

  111. eat fish with him, how do you know he's

  112. real?" So to make sure that's not

  113. actually blasphemous, no, Brett's not

  114. Jesus. And uh he's also very just down

  115. to earth. I really got along with him

  116. well. We shared stories just about our

  117. personal lives and things we're excited

  118. about. and he talked quite a bit about

  119. um PDX Crusade cuz I asked a lot of

  120. questions about it. I'm very excited

  121. about this and what this is is just a

  122. largecale church-hosted evangelistic

  123. event at the Moda Center and they're um

  124. still working on all their volunteer

  125. coordination systems as you might expect

  126. and they're going to be telling us all

  127. about how we might be able to serve and

  128. they need a lot of people serving. I

  129. kind of hope the whole church shows up

  130. in Forest to I mean whole Boon's Fairy

  131. shows up in Forest to serve. So, you're

  132. very much invited in that and you can

  133. read more about this at uh pdxcus

  134. crusade.com. There's quite a bit of

  135. information on there if you want to know

  136. more about it. But we're going to be

  137. participating that and that will be

  138. August 2nd through 3rd, which is the

  139. first week of August, first weekend of

  140. August.

  141. Um, one thing I do, one of the reasons

  142. why I bring up this is not just to

  143. invite you to PDX, but I wanted to share

  144. something with you that I think is

  145. really true about this. Um, atheism is a

  146. very strong and established church, a

  147. very trustworthy church. And I look at

  148. it as um, God's favor on Boon's Ferry to

  149. be connected in that way and be able to

  150. participate in event like this. It's

  151. actually only a very small list of

  152. churches that they're inviting to

  153. participate. He talked to me about that

  154. actually. And um, so I think it's really

  155. a blessing to be able to do that. And

  156. uh, it's a huge blessing to me too.

  157. sometimes being a lead pastor is is

  158. lonely and getting to talk to him about

  159. things it it just uh there was a

  160. fellowship there that developed uh right

  161. away and so I think it's a good thing to

  162. to be connected in that way and I think

  163. it shows that God's favor one thing that

  164. I was just amazingly encouraged by he

  165. said I can't tell you how often I hear

  166. good things about Boon Fairy just all

  167. the time from my staff from people just

  168. randomly at the grocery store and I mean

  169. that kind of thing you can't purchase

  170. that kind of reputation it comes from

  171. God it's I'm so thankful for it and it's

  172. such a blessing. And we're in Genesis 48

  173. and we're talking about those kinds of

  174. blessings. Blessings we have personally

  175. and blessings we have universally. So,

  176. let me pray and we'll get right into

  177. Genesis. Father, thank you for the favor

  178. that you show us. Thank you for the

  179. connections uh you're making between us

  180. and other churches. Uh the fellowship

  181. that we have with one another. um the

  182. the good future that you've promised us

  183. and the enthusiasm and excitement and

  184. expectation that you've put in our

  185. hearts as a church. We're looking

  186. forward uh to see what you do in our

  187. hearts and and through the work that

  188. you're doing in us, but also the work

  189. that we do for you. I pray now that you

  190. would continue to do your work through

  191. your word. And I pray this in Jesus

  192. name. Amen.

  193. Depending how long you've lived, you've

  194. most likely experienced this if you've

  195. been walking with Jesus for a while. Um,

  196. but if you're younger, you know, maybe

  197. you haven't yet experienced this and

  198. this will be kind of a new idea, but

  199. even young kids will sometimes already

  200. know this lesson. Um, and I want to just

  201. ask you a question. It's rhetorical. You

  202. don't need to raise your hands, but you

  203. can be thinking about it um in your mind

  204. and heart. And it's the question of um

  205. if you've ever experienced a season that

  206. was just really painful suffering

  207. really. I'm talking about the kind of

  208. pain that's just really hard that after

  209. several years you look back and realize

  210. that God was doing something in your

  211. life, in your heart, and maybe even the

  212. lives around you and the people in your

  213. family um that turned that pain into a

  214. blessing that's so great that you

  215. wouldn't go back and have it a different

  216. way. Okay. And you say you say, "Yeah,

  217. but sometimes people find the the loss

  218. of a loved one to some disease to end up

  219. being that kind of thing." So when they

  220. look back, it's not like the suffering

  221. wasn't that big of a deal. It's maybe

  222. the worst suffering of their lives. And

  223. yet they'll look back and sometimes call

  224. it a gift, like a blessing. I have

  225. experiences, we'll be talking about some

  226. of those in my life that I look back and

  227. it's hard to talk about them without

  228. getting emotional. Like it it cracks

  229. open the pain again. and and and and the

  230. pain has never gone away. I feel healed,

  231. but it's strange. You normally when you

  232. when you when you're healed, um a

  233. physical wounds, there's not like

  234. lingering pain uh afterwards. Maybe

  235. sometimes there is, but when you're

  236. really healed, there's usually not pain.

  237. But with spiritual wounds, it healing

  238. does not necessarily mean that you don't

  239. still remember the pain. It means that

  240. God has redeemed something in that place

  241. that that has given you a context, a

  242. vision, an understanding for why he

  243. brought you through it and why the

  244. result of that is so much greater than

  245. the pain actually was. So the longer

  246. you've been walking with the Lord, the

  247. the more you understand

  248. that not just some of the greatest

  249. blessings we get, but the very greatest

  250. blessing that we all have uh will come

  251. through suffering. It will come through

  252. pain. And there is no other way. I want

  253. to show you that today in scripture. Um

  254. it is embedded in the eternal

  255. gospel. There's no Easter Sunday morning

  256. joy without Friday pain.

  257. It's It's not any different for God's

  258. firstborn, for his only eternally

  259. begotten son, for himself. It's not any

  260. different. So, he was made obedient

  261. through suffering. It says obedient

  262. through suffering. He's perfect. Still

  263. obedient through suffering. There's no

  264. there's no way around that. And I feel

  265. the heaviness in the room here. But but

  266. the blessing on the other side so far

  267. eclipses the affliction that we

  268. experience that it's it's it ends up we

  269. realizing it ends up being a matter of

  270. God's glory. And I've I've never known a

  271. Christian that when they actually

  272. receive not the blessing of suffering,

  273. but the blessings that God brings in and

  274. through suffering, suffering itself

  275. really ought not to be called a

  276. blessing. It may seem so simple, but

  277. God's blessings are not curses.

  278. You might you might just anchor that

  279. into your heart right now so deeply

  280. because the enemy will over and over and

  281. over again try to tell you that this

  282. thing that God is trying to bless you

  283. through is a curse. And there's a reason

  284. why your flesh wants to believe that.

  285. We'll get back to that as we walk

  286. through this. But the idea here is that

  287. the the blessing that you receive from

  288. the Lord will will end up turning back

  289. to him in glory. And that's especially

  290. true because when you only receive it

  291. through suffering, right? When when

  292. you're suffering and you can't bring

  293. yourself out of that suffering. If

  294. you've ever been in deep suffering, you

  295. know, uh that like you can't lift

  296. yourself out of it. The psalmist talk

  297. about it being like a pit and there's no

  298. ladder. There's no way out. And so when

  299. God then lifts you out of that

  300. suffering, not by somehow making you

  301. forget altogether or acting as if it

  302. never happened or actually causing it to

  303. have never happened, but rather doing

  304. something in your heart that's so great

  305. that you realize there's so much joy in

  306. this blessing of suffering. Well,

  307. blessing through suffering that you end

  308. up just wanting to point to him in it.

  309. It's happening in this passage all over

  310. the place.

  311. But there's also sometimes where we

  312. resist the way that God wants to bless

  313. us. I think we intuitively know that

  314. some blessings um are going to

  315. automatically be a very deep sacrifice.

  316. There will be things you can't take

  317. along if you want to receive that

  318. blessing. There'll be things of yourself

  319. that can't stay the same if you want to

  320. receive that blessing. To put it more

  321. specifically, there will be things about

  322. you that have to die to receive some of

  323. God's blessings. And there's no death.

  324. There's no taking up the cross. There's

  325. no cru crucifixion of the flesh. That's

  326. not really painful. That's not really

  327. painful. And sometimes it comes to us in

  328. unexpectedly horrible ways. And I so I

  329. want to talk about that. But if we could

  330. put the main point up, it's not just any

  331. attitude in receiving blessing that

  332. glorifies God. Joyfully accepting God's

  333. universal and personal blessings glorify

  334. glorifies him. If you don't mean know

  335. what I mean by universal and personal

  336. blessings, the differentiation between

  337. that, we'll talk all about that here in

  338. a moment. But accepting both God's

  339. universal and personal blessings,

  340. joyfully accepting those glorifies

  341. him. You're going to see Jacob over and

  342. over again joyfully accepting God's

  343. blessings.

  344. And I mean other than Jesus, maybe Paul

  345. and and several other prophets, Jacob

  346. suffered a lot. Not every Bible

  347. character suffered as much as Jacob. And

  348. Joseph suffered a lot.

  349. So over and over and over again, the

  350. story of the gospel, which started at

  351. the beginning of Genesis, as we've seen,

  352. is a story of God blessing

  353. us most profoundly through, in, and

  354. after suffering. So the the point here

  355. is not one that's like, well, yeah,

  356. joyful, accepting God's universal and

  357. personal blessings, good. You're going

  358. to

  359. be brought through suffering. And the

  360. question will be, is this main point

  361. true in your heart when it seems the

  362. most false? Why would you be joyful

  363. while you're suffering? Why would you

  364. accept God's suffering that he brings

  365. into your life? Why would that ever be

  366. good for you? You know, I remember a

  367. teacher and a mentor at the time talking

  368. about how his wife's death through

  369. cancer was one of the greatest gifts

  370. that God has ever given him. He's not

  371. talking about the death itself being a

  372. gift.

  373. Death is a curse. It just is.

  374. Period. So, we ought not to call God's

  375. blessing curses. That's not what he was

  376. saying. The things that God did in and

  377. through him, the closeness that was

  378. brought into his

  379. life through that suffering, the ways

  380. that he had to cling to him during that

  381. suffering, that was the greatest gift.

  382. And I was suffering at the time. And I

  383. was like, "No, no, I'm not going to call

  384. this suffering. It's not a gift. Doesn't

  385. feel like a gift. I don't believe it's a

  386. gift." And then time went by and God

  387. ministered to to me. I began healing and

  388. I started realizing what he was doing

  389. that I didn't want to admit the time

  390. that he was

  391. doing. And I looked back at it and I

  392. realized, wow, that's the greatest gift

  393. I've ever received. And I would not be a

  394. gift to the church or I would not be a

  395. blessing to the church if God had not

  396. done that in my heart. And this was post

  397. me becoming a Christian. I was

  398. definitely already saved when God did

  399. it. So I want you to be considering

  400. those things not just sort of neutally.

  401. It's beautiful outside. All the buds are

  402. out. I mean it feels like Easter and

  403. such a amazing way. Um and even if this

  404. is sort of the fall summer, I welcome

  405. it. I'm excited about it. I look forward

  406. to hanging out outside today after

  407. church with the boys. So, it's a joyful

  408. time in my life. A friend, I didn't even

  409. have his number, but a friend I've gone

  410. camping with before um texted me. He

  411. drives by the church. He I I watched a

  412. sermon about you going to Guam and I

  413. just want you to know when I drive by

  414. the church, I've been praying that Guam

  415. would be a great trip for you. And I was

  416. like, hey, thanks so much. Uh I don't

  417. have this number in my phone. Who is

  418. this? and he said, I'm not going to say

  419. his name on a live stream, but he he um

  420. he he told me who he was and so I

  421. remembered and I told him all about

  422. Guam. And um believe it or not, I've

  423. lost my train of thought of why I even

  424. said all of this stuff. Um God has

  425. people praying for you. That was not the

  426. message. But uh this is where the sermon

  427. gets interactive when I forget what I'm

  428. saying. Easter, the weather. Yeah, maybe

  429. it was the weather. Um oh, what I told

  430. him was here. I'll actually read the

  431. text because this is one of maybe not

  432. the first times in my life that I've

  433. said this, but I just realized he asked

  434. how I was doing. I said, "I'm doing

  435. really well. Family is thriving. So is

  436. the church. Honestly, a great time in

  437. our lives right now. Maybe one of the

  438. best. I might be going through the best

  439. time of my whole life." I realized that

  440. also in speaking to Brett because he

  441. talked about um uh his Israel trips and

  442. uh you know maybe the possibility of

  443. linking up someday with with him and

  444. that. But what he said is you know you

  445. really ought to go to Israel and just

  446. one bus just go just go with your church

  447. right now. Uh as soon as you go two

  448. buses different experiences we have 10

  449. buses. We can't even stop at certain

  450. sites. So it's just become a totally

  451. different animal. And um and I I know

  452. his uh one of his kind of right-hand

  453. men, Gabe Carter, has said that uh Brett

  454. kind of longs for the days where Athe

  455. was smaller, you know, and I'm like,

  456. "Well, I'm there right now." And I love

  457. it. And I do think I do think God wants

  458. the church to grow and it's a blessing

  459. when the church grows and not a curse.

  460. But it comes with its own disadvantages,

  461. difficulties, growing pains. And I mean

  462. right now, I don't know if you know

  463. this, but we would love to meet with any

  464. and all of you for dinner. And I can do

  465. that. And not even it wouldn't even take

  466. a year to meet with every one of you for

  467. dinner to have you over to our house or

  468. come over to your house. That will

  469. become impossible as the church grows.

  470. So just even knowing every name will

  471. become impossible. So I look at that and

  472. I think, wow. And and my heart is

  473. currently eagerly joyfully accepting

  474. God's universal and personal blessings

  475. in my life. So I point back to him for

  476. it. All this joy right now is storing up

  477. for me something. I think to myself,

  478. it's not like God brings blessings and

  479. then there's some kind of evil with it

  480. every time. That's superstition

  481. superstition. Um but but there will be

  482. suffering in the future in my life. And

  483. I sort of want to store up this moment,

  484. this joy, uh while it was good and

  485. reflect that back to him about how good

  486. he's been in my life. Uh and sort of

  487. take that with me in the time of

  488. suffering, remembering it's not always

  489. been this hard. It's been really great

  490. in a time. So I but I don't know where

  491. you're at. Maybe for you I wondered in

  492. saying that to him where he was at. He

  493. hasn't texted back about that. But where

  494. are you at? If you're in a time of

  495. suffering by faith in a very real and

  496. tangible way, you can joyfully accept

  497. God's universal and personal blessings

  498. in a way that glorifies him. I would say

  499. more than you can ever glorify him. It

  500. is easy to say that God's awesome when

  501. your life is as good as mine is right

  502. now. When it becomes hard is when

  503. suffering enters. Okay. So let's get

  504. into Genesis 48 and see how Moses and

  505. therefore God makes this point of

  506. joyfully accepting God's universal and

  507. personal blessings glorifies him. Verse

  508. 148 after this Joseph was told behold

  509. your father is ill. So he took with him

  510. his two sons Manasse and Ephrame. And so

  511. it's it's not particular to say

  512. that the the Bible here doesn't really

  513. focus on Joseph's suffering that his

  514. father is is on his deathbed basically

  515. and and about to die. In fact, there's

  516. great joy here and and Jacob has great

  517. joy in meeting and blessing his

  518. grandson's sons Manassa in a frame. Um,

  519. but there's no way around the fact that

  520. death, even when it comes in old age

  521. after having got to spend 17 years with

  522. your aranged son and your grandchildren,

  523. isn't a very sad thing. So, Joseph is is

  524. going to lose Jacob. And they they weep

  525. and mourn for 30 days. It's no cakewalk

  526. to lose anybody at any time for any

  527. reason. Death is terrible. And it was

  528. not supposed to be the plan. And it

  529. happened as a result of of Adam and

  530. Eve's sin, particularly Adam's sin, the

  531. Bible says. So death is real. Death is

  532. suffering. And it is the backdrop of

  533. what's going on here. And it was told to

  534. Jacob, "Your son Joseph has come to

  535. you." And then Israel summoned his

  536. strength. So, uh, Jacob and Israel are

  537. the same person. And we're actually, I

  538. don't know if you know, if you've been

  539. with us through Genesis, you probably

  540. know how the name Israel came about, how

  541. God renamed Jacob. And it's a very

  542. important passage, and we'll go back

  543. there. Uh, but then Israel summoned his

  544. strength and sat up in bed. So, he's

  545. he's he's on his deathbed. He's

  546. summoning his strength to just sit up in

  547. bed. And Jacob said to Joseph, "God

  548. almighty appeared to me at l in the land

  549. of Canaan and blessed me." probably more

  550. than any other verse in this passage. Uh

  551. we're going to spend time on it for a

  552. very specific reason because all of our

  553. universal blessings are pointed at in

  554. this exact verse and I'll show you how.

  555. Um when I say universal blessings, it's

  556. the blessings that all Christians in all

  557. places and times throughout history have

  558. all shared. It it still um takes a

  559. reception of those blessings. So

  560. universal blessings um can be

  561. attitudinally rejected. So let's say God

  562. brings a blessing into your life that's

  563. meant to undermine and destroy an area

  564. or a pocket of pride in your heart,

  565. right? And let's say that blessing is

  566. the blessing of repenting of some

  567. particular sin. The sin may be personal

  568. to you, but repentance itself is a

  569. universal thing, isn't it? To

  570. Christians, everyone has to repent. And

  571. you you repent initially. That's called

  572. justification. You're now justified in

  573. God's eyes when he sees you. He sees

  574. Christ's righteousness superimposed on

  575. you, right? So, he doesn't see your sin.

  576. He sees Christ's atoning sacrifice for

  577. you. And therefore, the law fulfilled.

  578. You couldn't fulfill it. He sees

  579. Christ's fulfillment of that law, which

  580. not only he kept perfectly, but still

  581. requires a sacrifice for sin, and he

  582. kept that in the cross. He sees that,

  583. not your sin. The enemy will keep

  584. pointing out, "Oh, you're still a

  585. sinner. You're still a sinner." It's not

  586. how God sees you. But that doesn't mean

  587. that God doesn't want to sanctify you.

  588. And that's where you're already saved,

  589. but he continues to have you, fancy

  590. theological word, mortify your flesh,

  591. put to death the misdeeds of the body by

  592. the spirit. Okay? So, so there are times

  593. where we need to confess our sin or or

  594. repent of our sin even as Christians.

  595. And actually, I think those times are

  596. quite often. Uh it's important to do

  597. that of every little sin and and really

  598. also not to call them little per se, but

  599. I mean sometimes we'll call a sin little

  600. and think, "Oh, we don't need to confess

  601. that." And yes, you do. Yes, you do. Sin

  602. and snares and the truth will set you

  603. free. So, you tell the truth about that.

  604. I'm sorry that I did that, God. You you

  605. even ask God to um show if there's any

  606. unrighteous way in your heart and then

  607. lead you on the path everlasting. So,

  608. you'll need the Holy Spirit to highlight

  609. because sometimes our pride is so

  610. entangled in our in ourselves. You know,

  611. I I was thinking the other day that

  612. first of all, sometimes the flesh in the

  613. Bible is used like as your like your

  614. bone, your sin, you like your actual

  615. flesh. But more often than not,

  616. especially the New Testament, it's used

  617. as those things inside of us that are

  618. sinful, that resist God, that desire

  619. something else opposite of his spirit.

  620. And so in that way, and I have to be

  621. really careful here because in another

  622. way this isn't true at all. The flesh is

  623. a spiritual concept. Do you understand

  624. that? But the Bible says that spiritual

  625. things are opposed to the flesh, but

  626. they're both in the realm of spiritual

  627. things. The flesh is not something that

  628. you could like see or handle or touch or

  629. like scientifically measure, but it's

  630. it's still our sinful nature. Um my

  631. point is that you can't do anything to

  632. your flesh apart from the spirit. You

  633. don't have tools or leverage or some

  634. kind of way of reaching down and be like

  635. killing that piece. Only God can. And

  636. your flesh has a way of deceiving itself

  637. into thinking that it's not wrong and

  638. that you're justified in desiring this.

  639. Oh, desiring this thing is not that

  640. wrong. Even though it's become an idol,

  641. as long as you can hide it from other

  642. people, you think you're in the clear.

  643. Well, God can see your flesh. God knows

  644. exactly how much of it is still alive

  645. and what it needs to be killed. And and

  646. the Bible calls that taking up your

  647. cross, living a crucified life. And if

  648. there's anything painful, it's the

  649. cross. So, you ought not to expect that

  650. God is going to uh bring you to

  651. repentance without pain because it

  652. requires the surrender of your flesh to

  653. death to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes

  654. searing pain and terror because it's so

  655. intertwined with you. you feel like

  656. you're going to lose yourself in losing

  657. this thing. Um, idols can get that

  658. embedded. Why am I saying all of this?

  659. Well, because Jacob had to give up a lot

  660. of idols and so did his wife Rachel and

  661. God would show up to him in these

  662. powerful ways in this case at LZ which

  663. he renamed to a famous name Bethl. This

  664. is I think I have it uh Genesis chapter

    Genesis 28 chapter mention

  665. 28. And it's I mean actually not in a

  666. faithful way, but it was made into one

  667. of the most famous songs of all time,

  668. the stairway to heaven. So even popular

  669. society has heard about the stairway to

  670. heaven, the ladder to heaven. And here's

  671. that passage at which that's from

  672. chapter 28:12. This is where God showed

  673. up to him all. And he uh Jacob dreamed

  674. and behold the there was a ladder set up

  675. on earth and the top of it reached to

  676. heaven. And behold, the angels of God

  677. were ascending and descending on it. And

  678. behold, the Lord stood above it and

  679. said, "I am the Lord, the God of

  680. Abraham, your father, the God of Isaac,

  681. the land on which you lie, I will give

  682. to you and to your offspring." Okay,

  683. that's that's where he repeated that

  684. promise that he had first given to

  685. Abraham, passed on to Isaac, and now

  686. it's passed on to to Jacob, but in this

  687. very special vision. And so what we're

  688. imagining, biblically faithful

  689. imagination here, is Jacob seeing a

  690. ladder that touches earth and it goes

  691. all the way up to heaven and the Lord

  692. God himself is standing at the top of

  693. that ladder and angels of God are

  694. ascending and descending. Very clear

  695. picture that there's this ladder that's

  696. the the only way to heaven. You know,

  697. you've seen the I've seen people, you

  698. know, have like street sign looking

  699. signs in their uh in their room. And my

  700. brother used to have one of these has a

  701. a sign with an arrow up and it says one

  702. way Jesus. Okay, that's and and it was

  703. what? So really the latter is about

  704. Jesus. How do we know? Can we can we

  705. really say that? Well, let's go to

  706. John 1 verse 51. And I have it up here,

    John 1:51

  707. I think. Um yeah, and he's speaking um

  708. to one of his future disciples and he

  709. says to him, "Truly, truly I say to you,

  710. you will see heaven opened and the

  711. angels of God ascending and descending

  712. on the son of man." Which was one of

  713. Jesus' favorite ways to speak about

  714. himself as the son of man. He's the son

  715. of God and he's the son of man. But he'd

  716. often talk about himself as the son of

  717. man. So what is Jesus saying here? He's

  718. saying he's the latter. Who's the

  719. stairway to heaven? You know, not Led

  720. Zeppelin. Not that they were necessarily

  721. saying that but Jesus is that stairway.

  722. Okay. So, Jacob in a very real

  723. way saw a revelation of Jesus Christ in

  724. vision or image form. And I do not know

  725. how much Jacob knew of that being a

  726. revelation of of the Messiah, but it

  727. very much was. And Jesus is the one that

  728. reveals to us that that's actually about

  729. him. So let's go back to Genesis 48

  730. here and let's talk about what this

  731. means for us because we know that the

  732. blessing to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

  733. that's passed on to Aphra and Manasse

  734. here um is not just a blessing for

  735. ancient Israelites that are now dead.

  736. First of all, those who believed are

  737. still alive in

  738. heaven. Jesus himself says, "I am the

  739. God. I am the God of Abraham." So before

  740. Abraham was I am Jesus says so Jesus was

  741. already there with Abraham and we we see

  742. him showing up in ways in fact it's my

  743. conviction and I think the Bible really

  744. points to this is that who that's who

  745. Jacob wrestled and we'll go we'll go in

  746. a minute to that that moment well

  747. towards the end of the sermon to Jacob

  748. wrestling with God. We're going to

  749. revisit that idea because it was also

  750. about blessing. But we've already talked

  751. multiple times about the idea of being

  752. included in the

  753. Abrahamic Isaiah or that would be about

  754. Isaiah, but the Isaac and and Jacobite

  755. blessing and that blessing was for the

  756. entire world that Israel would become a

  757. blessing to the entire all the world and

  758. that uh in them all the world would be

  759. blessed and specifically Abraham's

  760. offspring. And Paul makes a big deal

  761. about not offsprings like plural, but

  762. one. And that points to Jesus. And one

  763. thing that I want to do is because I'm

  764. not just assuming that everyone in here

  765. has necessarily already received that

  766. blessing. It's a universal blessing of

  767. all Christians to receive. To be

  768. included in this promise, and there's a

  769. lot to the promise, but eternal life is

  770. what it's really pointing to. And to be

  771. included in this promise means believing

  772. in Jesus Christ. And that means

  773. something very specific that I want to

  774. show you. So we've already talked about

  775. John 1 uh 51. There is no other ladder

  776. and that ladder to God to heaven is

  777. Jesus Christ. But we need to define who

  778. Jesus actually is and what he said about

  779. himself, what was said about him, what

  780. he received being said about him and and

  781. and those kinds of things. So I want to

  782. go to John 20:8. And so if you're

    John 20:8

  783. wondering why are we talking about Jesus

  784. and his divinity here, well, we're

  785. talking about that because that is

  786. something you need to believe to receive

  787. the universal blessing. Um, and this is

  788. John 20 28. Okay. Evidently, I didn't

  789. have a marker there.

  790. Um, remember doubting Thomas. Kind of

  791. think that's a little bit of an unfair

  792. way to characterize Thomas because

  793. that's not the way God would see him.

  794. God sees him also as a righteous man who

  795. believed. But the reason why he gets

  796. that name is because he didn't believe

  797. and he refused to believe until he saw

  798. proof. He wanted to see Jesus. And he

  799. shows him his nail scars. And what does

  800. Thomas say? Thomas answered, "My Lord

  801. and my God." Thomas says that to Jesus

  802. about Jesus. He calls him my Lord and my

  803. God. So now we're beyond just being the

  804. way to God, but being um God himself.

  805. And and what Jesus says next in verse

  806. 29, have you believed because you've

  807. seen me? Blessed are those who have not

  808. seen and yet have believed. In other

  809. words, he's not rejecting Thomas's

  810. statement that he's Lord and God. But

  811. he's saying you believe because you see

  812. that. But it's even more blessed to

  813. believe that I'm Lord and God without

  814. even having seen it like that and need

  815. to be proved in that way. Okay, just

  816. believing by faith in response to the

  817. word. So he not I want I want you to see

  818. he not only doesn't reject it, he gives

  819. us an example of how those who don't see

  820. it, that would be all of us. We never

  821. saw his nail scars. We see them by

  822. faith. That's it. But we never saw them

  823. like Thomas saw them. So we don't get

  824. even the same proof. But Jesus says it's

  825. more blessed to recognize I'm Lord and

  826. God if you haven't even seen it. Okay?

  827. So what what I'm telling you is that

  828. that's either right for him to accept

  829. the title God in that case or it's

  830. absolutely blasphemous. Okay? And I want

  831. to show you how all of those faithful

  832. servants to God immediately reject being

  833. worshiped when they're not God. And I

  834. forgot to put a marker in it. So

  835. Revelation 22

  836. 8-9, if you guys could throw that up. I,

  837. John, and this is again the Apostle

  838. John, am the one who heard and saw these

  839. things, the vision that's written down

  840. in Revelation, and I heard and saw them.

  841. And I fell down to worship at the feet

  842. of the angel who showed them to me.

  843. Okay? But he said to me, you must not do

  844. that. I'm a fellow servant with you and

  845. your brothers, the prophets, and with

  846. those who keep the words of this book.

  847. Worship God. So just God alone you

  848. worship. Nobody else. don't worship a

  849. created being in any way. Right? It's

  850. and and um God puts people to death on

  851. the spot for receiving glory as a divine

  852. figure. But in this case, Jesus accepted

  853. Thomas calling him Lord and God, but the

  854. angel didn't. Now, I want to continue in

  855. verse 13 of the same

  856. chapter. And this is uh chapter 22 of

  857. Revelation, the last chapter of the

  858. Bible. It says, "I am the Alpha and the

  859. Omega, the first and the last, the

  860. beginning and the and leave it right

  861. here. What does that mean? And who's

  862. speaking? You would think it's God the

  863. Father that's speaking because that's

  864. what he says about himself. Alpha is the

  865. first letter of the Greek alphabet.

  866. Omega is the last letter. And it means

  867. and it's defined in this very I'm the

  868. first and the last, the beginning and

  869. the end. If you're the first, there's

  870. nothing before you. And obviously, it's

  871. not saying that you had someone before

  872. you or that something existed before

  873. you. You're just eternally the first and

  874. also the last. You're everything.

  875. There's nothing, right? It's it's saying

  876. you're God. God says this about himself.

  877. And then verse 16, and you can read this

  878. for

  879. yourself. I, Jesus, have sent my angel

  880. to testify to you about these things for

  881. the churches. I am the root and the

  882. descendant of David, the bright morning

  883. star. In other words, Jesus is

  884. identifying himself as the one who's

  885. speaking. And if you look literally at

  886. any red lighter Bible, which is just

  887. biblical translators, scholars of the

  888. original language and and trying to

  889. figure out who is saying what, saying

  890. clearly, this is Jesus speaking. But

  891. it's already obvious because he says, "I

  892. Jesus." Right? I had Jehovah's Witnesses

  893. come to my house one time and they they

  894. started with a lie. They said, "We're

  895. not from a church, you know, and but

  896. they'll invite you to church later." And

  897. I so I didn't actually know if they

  898. because I thought, well, I mean, I

  899. actually believe all Jehovah's Witnesses

  900. are deceived by a lie. And so it's not

  901. that they're always truthful, but I was

  902. kind of surprised. So I thought, well,

  903. maybe this is just some kind of Bible

  904. study group or whatever. And they handed

  905. me a little a little booklet and I

  906. looked around it and couldn't find

  907. Watchtower. I eventually found it there.

  908. So I thought, oh, I started talking to

  909. them about it. Um, and and then finally

  910. when I started hearing some weird

  911. things, I said, "Oh, is you guys are you

  912. guys Jehovah's Witnesses?" And and they

  913. said, "Well, yes." And I I said, "Do you

  914. have um a place where you gather with

  915. other Jehovah's Witnesses on a regular

  916. basis?" And they said, "Yes." And I

  917. said, "That's church." And he said, "You

  918. are not from a church, but you're

  919. definitely from a church." And so I

  920. already know you're not telling the

  921. truth because you lied to me with the

  922. first sentence you said. Right? I never

  923. even let them in the house. And I was

  924. standing this close to them. Okay. Okay.

  925. The Bible actually commands to not let

  926. false teachers and uh uh false preachers

  927. like that in the house. And uh so I I

  928. said to them also, I know every one of

  929. the passages that your Bible has

  930. whitewashed and the minimal

  931. understanding you have of Greek to

  932. contradict certain things that aren't

  933. even true, but I also know the passages

  934. your Bible has missed. And this is the

  935. one. They haven't whitewashed it. And I

  936. read it to them and they had no answer.

  937. The young guy even seemed like, "Whoa,

  938. I've never seen that." Okay, you guys

  939. say you know Greek and you know Jesus

  940. isn't God. What about this passage that

  941. he says himself, I am the alpha and the

  942. omega. I'm the alpha and the omega.

  943. Okay, and I I don't want to harp it on

  944. anymore. But they even had no answer. I

  945. said, look in your Bible. It says it in

  946. your Bible. I don't know. You should

  947. pray for that young guy. I think his

  948. name was Caleb. Um the older lady was

  949. just hardened and looked really angry at

  950. me for making that point. and she was

  951. looking at him and like could see that

  952. he was like actually interested. It's

  953. like if you really want to know what

  954. your Bible says, you have to deal with

  955. that verse cuz that is blasphemy if it's

  956. not true. You can't call yourself the

  957. first and the last, the beginning and

  958. the end. So, but he does. Jesus does.

  959. Let's continue. This is John

    John 10:30

  960. 10:30. And uh you guys are just going to

  961. be faster turning there. He says, "I and

  962. the father are

  963. one." Okay? claiming unity with God.

  964. This is why in many creeds and faith

  965. statements about the Trinity, you will

  966. say, you will hear that although they're

  967. distinct persons, Jesus is a person and

  968. God the Father is a person and not the

  969. same person, they're one in essence and

  970. they're both fully God and fully divine.

  971. They're one in essence. Let's go to

  972. another verse. John 14:9.

    John 14:9

  973. Jesus said to him,"I have been with you

  974. so long." He's talking to Philillip, I

  975. believe. "And have you still not known

  976. me?" Yeah. Know me, Philillip. Whoever

  977. has seen me has seen the father. How can

  978. you say, "Show us the father." Right? He

  979. identifies himself so closely, so

  980. unified with the father that to look at

  981. Jesus is to see the father. He's saying

  982. he's the revelation of the father here,

  983. right? I mean, what what would you say

  984. if a human being started saying those

  985. kinds of things, you know? Right. You it

  986. would it would it'd be terrifying

  987. actually like whoa that is evil what

  988. you're saying. It's an e cult leader say

  989. these kinds of things you know. See I

  990. think is Jesus a cult leader you know is

  991. he crazy like CS Lewis said on the level

  992. of someone who thinks they're an egg or

  993. is he a blasphemer or is he actually

  994. truly who he says he is? Matthew 21 and9

  995. and and verse 16-1 17. Let's go to verse

  996. 9 first. I show you this. We had just

  997. gone to uh John 14:9. Yeah. Had we

    John 14:9

  998. already done John 14:9? Go back to John

    John 14:9 John 14:9

  999. 14:9 for me to check real quick because

1000. there's a point here. Yeah. Okay. So now

  1001. Matthew 21:9. And there's there's a

    Matthew 21:9

1002. one-two punch here between Matthew

    Matthew 21:9

1003. 21:9 and Luke 1843. And you might say,

1004. you know, we could go to verses that are

1005. even more convincing than this. uh yeah,

1006. you probably could, but those are also

1007. the ones that um uh the kind of cults

1008. and sects have have had the most time to

1009. manipulate and change and tamper with.

1010. Whereas this one is, I think, one of the

1011. more uh uh powerful proofs that Jesus

1012. accepted worship. Um and and that very

1013. same word is also used of God the

1014. Father. So, let's go to Matthew 21:9.

    Matthew 21:9

1015. Um, and I included this one because it's

1016. Palm Sunday and I thought we should not

1017. just talk about Palm Sunday on Palm

1018. Sunday. So, here it is. And the crowds

1019. that went before him and that followed

1020. him were shouting, "Hosana to the son of

1021. David. Blessed is he who comes in the

1022. name of the Lord. Hosana in the

1023. highest." And the Pharisees, who didn't

1024. even really worship God. They just said

1025. they did. They were total legalists are

1026. obviously starting to bristle at this

1027. idea of calling this mere human being

1028. hosana in the highest. Um it's getting

1029. too close to worship for them. And so

1030. they confront Jesus. Let's go to Matthew

1031. 21 same chapter verse 16-17. And they

1032. these the Pharisees said to him, "Do you

1033. hear what these are saying?" And Jesus

1034. said to them, "Yes. Have you never read

1035. out of the mouth of infants and nursing

1036. babies you have prepared praise?"

1037. In other words, Jesus is not only

  1038. accepting their

1039. praise, he's um accepting their praise

1040. of him as hosiah in the hosana in the

1041. highness. Hos hosana in the

  1042. highest I don't even know. I just

  1043. blacked out. But

1044. um but he's using scripture to prove

1045. that it's right. All right. Now, that

1046. word um praise is and it only shows up

1047. one other time in all of the Bible. Very

1048. interesting. Let's go to Luke

    Luke 18:43

1049. 18:43. And immediately he recovered his

1050. sight and following glorified God. And

1051. all the people when they saw it gave

1052. praise, gave in to God. Exact same word

1053. only shows up twice in the Bible. Once

1054. of Jesus saying that I'm worthy of it

1055. according to the Bible. Even if infants

1056. do it. Later he'll say even the rocks

1057. will cry out. Right? Even creation to

1058. some degree worships and displays the

1059. glory of Jesus Christ. But very clearly

1060. the word inos really means praise of

1061. God. Okay? And Jesus accepts it and

1062. defends it to those that are accusing

1063. him of basically receiving worship.

1064. Right? So the word praise, it's what we

1065. do. We praise Jesus. We praise God. Same

1066. exact word. Same exact word. Let's

1067. continue just a little bit more and then

1068. we'll be done. And the last verse I want

1069. to go to is 2 Corinthians 4

1070. 3-6. And even if our gospel is veiled,

1071. it is veiled to those who are perishing.

1072. Next verse. In their case, the God of

1073. this world has blinded the minds of un

1074. of the unbelievers to keep them from

1075. seeing the light of the gospel, the

1076. glory of Christ, who is the image of

  1077. God.

  1078. I can't remember whether I gave it to

1079. the team or not, but I just have to go

1080. to Hebrews chapter 1 to just talk about

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

1081. that just a little bit more. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

1082. chapter 1 says something about the glory

1083. of God. Remember our point is that

1084. joyfully accepting our universal and

  1085. personal personal blessings glorifies

1086. God. So why are we talking about Jesus

1087. so much? Because he is our commonly held

1088. universal blessing and to worship him

1089. glorifies God. He is Hebrews 1:3. Yeah,

    Hebrews 1:3

1090. I have it. He is the radiance of the

1091. glory of God and the exact imprint of

1092. his nature. And he upholds the universe

1093. by the word of his power. And after

1094. making purifications for sins, he sat

1095. down at the right hand of majesty.

1096. Having become as much superior to angels

1097. as he as the name he has inherited is

1098. more excellent to theirs. For to which

1099. of the angels did God ever say, "You are

1100. my son. Today I have begotten you." Or

1101. again, I will be to him a father, and he

1102. shall be to me a son. And again, when he

1103. brings the firstborn, we're going to be

1104. talking about firstborn and secondborn

1105. today. When he brings the firstborn into

1106. the world, he says, "Let all God's

1107. angels worship him." Okay, I could say

1108. so much about the rightness of

1109. worshiping God and worshiping Jesus with

1110. the exact same kind of worship and how

1111. it's exactly what scripture teaches us

1112. to do. But what I want you to remember

1113. that whether it's Old Testament saint or

1114. not, it's our response to the revelation

1115. of Jesus Christ that is the key idea,

1116. the main point of the whole gospel. Let

1117. me say that again. It's our

1118. uh uh it's our reception of the

1119. revelation of Jesus Christ. You think,

1120. how is an Old Testament saved? How is an

1121. Old Testament saved? By faith in what

1122. God has revealed to them about Jesus

1123. Christ. see that over and over again.

1124. Okay? Remember when God declared Abraham

1125. righteous by faith? By what did he

1126. declare him righteous? That he was

1127. willing to sacrifice his only beloved

1128. son. I mean, come on, right? The whole

1129. sacrifice of Isaac, what does Jes say

  1130. was like, "Where's where's the lamb,

1131. daddy?" Cuz he sees like there's Well, I

1132. mean, are you going to sacrifice me?

  1133. That's what's going through his mind.

1134. God will provide for himself a lamb, and

1135. it's his very own son.

1136. So what was Abraham righteous by faith

1137. by? He was righteous by faith in his

1138. trust of what God had revealed to him

1139. about himself. No, I will not require

  1140. your son to be

1141. sacrificed. Right? But Abraham trusted

1142. God and whatever God was trying to

1143. reveal to him about Jesus, he trusted at

1144. the time. And yes, we have had a lot

1145. more revealed about who Jesus is than

1146. they did. We not only know that he is

1147. the latter to heaven. We know that he's

1148. fully man. In every way that you can be

1149. human, he is. But he's also fully God.

1150. And in every way that you can be God, he

1151. he also is. But he is not God the father

1152. nor God the Holy Spirit. So let's

1153. continue receiving that though. Like if

1154. you worship Jesus, you have the

1155. Abrahamic blessing. Period. And if you

1156. don't, you don't. And it has to be

1157. revealed to you. And you have to respond

1158. to that revelation by faith. So joyfully

1159. accepting that if Jesus is the radiance

1160. of God's glory, of course you accepting

1161. him as fully man and fully divine is

1162. going to glorify God. I like to think of

1163. God the father's eternal radiating glory

1164. being mirrored back to him in Christ

1165. from all eternity. Never started just

1166. always was that mirror. So let's

1167. continue verse four. And he said to me,

  1168. "Behold, I will make you a a fruitful

1169. and multiply you, and I will make of you

1170. a company of peoples, and I will give

1171. this land to your offspring after you

1172. for an everlasting possession." I want

1173. to stop there, too. We won't spend as

1174. much time on this verse as others, but

1175. this one um is not just about the

1176. blessing that we've received, although

1177. this really points to the fact that all

1178. those in Abraham will inherit eternal

1179. life and heaven on earth forever. So

1180. it's it's us along with the Jews that

1181. God ultimately includes that uh will

1182. inherit the earth forever. So ours is

1183. the everlasting possession too. But

1184. right here the promise is specifically

1185. made to Jacob, Israel, same person and

1186. it's being passed on. And we'll read

1187. just a little bit longer. Let me let me

1188. actually read verse 5. And now your two

1189. sons who were born to you in the land of

1190. Egypt before I came to you in Egypt are

1191. mine. A frame and manasse shall be mine

1192. as Reuben and Simeon are. Now, if you

1193. have maybe an overbearing mother or

1194. father-in-law or actually mother of

1195. father and they're kind of horning in

1196. too much on your children, you might

1197. react to this passage, but don't

  1198. misunderstand who he's saying. He's not

  1199. saying they're my children. Now, he's

1200. saying, I will treat them in terms of

1201. inheritance exactly like my own sons.

1202. Meaning, they will inherit their own

1203. possession in the promised land. This is

1204. nothing but unbelievably generous and a

1205. huge blessing to these two boys and

1206. Joseph would have most certainly

1207. received it like that. Okay, but

1208. remember it says an everlasting

1209. possession. What's happening right now

1210. in Israel? Well, they're at war. At war

1211. with Hamas, but also to some degree at

1212. war for the right to even exist as a

1213. nation in the first place. And you hear

1214. a lot of people sort of with logical and

1215. political reasons defend Israel. But I

1216. want to give you a very different reason

1217. why we should support Israel existing as

1218. a nation and support its right to defend

1219. itself against all enemies, foreign and

1220. domestic. And um it's it's verses like

1221. this. So So it's not weird or playing

1222. the God card to say that they have the

1223. land by divine right. In fact, not only

1224. is weird, no other nation can say that

1225. about themselves. No matter how much you

1226. believe in some kind of manifest

1227. destiny, nowhere in scripture does it

1228. say that Europeans who then become

1229. Americans have a divine right to this

1230. land. It doesn't say that, right? That

1231. doesn't mean that I think we should

1232. listen to the absolute nonsense of give

1233. your land back. Well, how about you

1234. first? Lead by example if you can tell

1235. everybody to do that. And nobody ever

1236. does it that says they're doing it. So,

1237. but then am I am I saying that all the

1238. ways that we traded the Native Americans

1239. were okay? No. There were things that we

1240. definitely did wrong. Blood feud back

1241. and forth, right? So, I've been thinking

1242. a lot about this and when I don't fully

1243. understand something or I want to figure

1244. out what's the simplest version of this,

1245. I my mind goes to work, can't stop it,

1246. and I just have conversations with

1247. people. So, I think about it's like what

1248. what is it really for every other nation

1249. that gives them the right to be in a in

1250. the land? And the further you distill

1251. it, the more times you mull it over, the

1252. only common denominator is might makes

1253. right. for every other nation. If you

1254. can take the land and you can hold the

1255. land, it becomes your land. That's it.

1256. There's nothing else. If you if you take

1257. everything else away because you can't

1258. say that it's definitely God who gave

1259. you the land because you don't have any

1260. authoritative points in the Bible to say

1261. that you were given this land, you can

1262. say biblically that you have the right

1263. to defend your nation. Uh God shows that

1264. over and over and over again. But again,

1265. nations rise and nations fall over and

1266. over and over again. Remember when we

1267. went through Daniel and God prophesies

1268. this nation state, power of the world

1269. will be toppled by this nation state

1270. will be toppled by this nation. Why?

1271. Because that nation was more powerful.

1272. God has his purposes in it. But that's

1273. not the reason why Israel has the land.

1274. That's political reasons people point

1275. you. Oh, they just took it by violence.

1276. They have a divine right. And it says

1277. right here that it's an everlasting

1278. possession. And I want to show you how

1279. that has not changed and how it is not

  1280. only a misunderstanding or

1281. misinterpretation, but it ends up

1282. amalgamating and a curse to Israel to

1283. reject this. And we ought not to curse

1284. Israel because it says cursed will those

1285. be cursed to you. We should bless Israel

1286. because it says blessed are those who

1287. bless you. Romans 11, hotly debated

1288. passage, but I think in what I'm about

1289. to show you very clear. Romans 11, I'll

1290. just read it from here. lest you be wise

1291. in your own sight. I do not want you to

1292. be unaware of this mystery, brothers.

1293. He's talking in this case to Gentiles.

1294. Maybe in the Roman church, uh a mixture

1295. of some Jews and Gentiles, but partially

1296. primarily in this chapter 11 here, he's

1297. talking to Gentiles and how they've been

1298. included in the root. And the root is

1299. Israel. And they've included included as

1300. if they're wild olive branches. And you

1301. can graft wild branches into different

1302. trees and have two different apples or

1303. two different olives grow on uh uh the

1304. same tree, right? That's possible and

1305. sometimes beneficial if you want to have

1306. certain different kind maybe a hardier

1307. type of uh blight resistant type of

1308. fruit. But the point is we're the

1309. unnatural branches as as um uh as

1310. Gentiles and they are the natural

1311. branches. And he even says, "How much

1312. easier to break off the unnatural

1313. branches and regraft in the natural

1314. branches." So don't get arrogant like

1315. you replaced them. Right? So Romans 11

1316. is the slam dunk anti-replacement

1317. theology uh passage in all the Bible.

1318. And I just don't even understand how you

1319. could read it and still have that view.

1320. But it is terribly wrong. And I oppose

1321. it with great passion. And and this is

1322. why he says this mystery, a partial

1323. hardening has come upon Israel until the

1324. fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

1325. Okay? So what he's saying is that what's

1326. happened to Israel and them rejecting

1327. Jesus is actually from God. And it's a

1328. partial hardening. And that partial

1329. hardening, let's continue reading here,

1330. will be lifted when the fullness of

1331. Israel comes in. And in this way, all

1332. Israel be will be saved. As is it is as

1333. it is written, the deliverer will come

1334. from Zion. He will banish ungodliness

1335. from Jacob. So what we're talking about

1336. is that eventually currently hardened

1337. ethnic Jews will become genuinely

1338. spiritual Jews and will worship Jesus

1339. again. Well, not again, but for the

1340. first time they will actually be, as

1341. some people say, completed. So it's not

1342. just being an ethnic Jew, though

  1343. according to Romans 9 through11 that

1344. saves you because not all Israel is true

1345. Israel. So, it's those who are actually

1346. included in that promised seed by faith.

1347. Okay? And and ultimately Romans 9 says

1348. that God's the one that chooses that.

1349. And and that's the reason for why

1350. there's some that have hardened

1351. themselves and some that haven't. But

  1352. let's continue because here's where the

1353. real proof comes. And this will be my

1354. covenant with them when I take away

1355. their sins. Verse 28. As regards the

1356. gospel, they're enemies for your sake.

  1357. Do you know that?

1358. like Pharisees or well I mean uh

1359. religious teachers in Israel are still

  1360. very anti-Jesus they're trying to make

1361. laws in the nation that you can't even

1362. talk about him okay and that you like

1363. could have prison time for talking about

1364. it so regarding the gospel Israel and

1365. hardened Israel is definitely enemy but

1366. regards to election they are beloved for

1367. the sake of their forefathers he's very

  1368. clearly differentiating between Gentiles

1369. right and Jews it's not that the church

1370. has replaced Israel in God's mind verse

  1371. 29

1372. N for the gifts and the calling of God

1373. are irrevocable. What was the gift and

1374. the calling? One of them we just talked

1375. about that he was going to give them a

1376. land for an everlasting possession. So

1377. when you say Israel doesn't have a right

1378. to the land, when you undermine Israel's

1379. right to defend themselves from enemies

1380. uh like Hamas, you are opposing God.

  1381. You're opposing his promise and you're

1382. cursing Israel. And it's not okay and

1383. it's not good and it's a very deep sin

1384. that you ought to repent of. And I I do

1385. not say that with any disclaimer or

1386. backing down in any way because I think

  1387. it's that important and it's a universal

1388. blessing Christians ought to receive. It

1389. is blessed to bless the people of God

1390. even though they are hardened for a time

  1391. because considering election their

1392. brothers and the gifts and the calling

1393. of God are irrevocable. It never

1394. changed. Never changed. That's so

1395. important and I hope that you agree

1396. because there's such great universal

1397. blessing to be received in it and we can

1398. joyfully receive that in supporting

1399. them. Verse 5, and now your two sons who

1400. were born to you in the land of Egypt

1401. before I came to you in Egypt are mine.

1402. Aphrame and Manasse shall be mine as

1403. Reuben and Simeon are. So he's including

1404. uh Frame and Manasse. And if we were

1405. just continue preaching the Bible, you'd

1406. find out Manasse and Aframe become these

1407. half tribes. Not one tribe each, but an

1408. half tribe. Which is why sometimes it's

1409. like, wait, were there 12 tribes? How

1410. many tribes were there? You know, there

1411. were more patriarchs than there were

1412. actual tribes. Um, more tribal heads

1413. than their actual tribes because

1414. Manasseh and Reuben become two

  1415. half-tribes. And I guess actually there

1416. are times where Joseph is considered a

1417. tribe, but he's usually not considered

1418. the head of a tribe. These two are in

1419. replacement of him. That's how they got

1420. their inheritance. So when Israel saw

  1421. Joseph's sons, he

  1422. said, "No, I I I skipped forward too

1423. much here." So, and the children that

1424. you fathered after them shall be yours.

1425. They shall be called by the name of

1426. their brothers in their inheritance. So,

  1427. it's not that they'll get no

1428. inheritance. They're just not included

1429. in the 12 tribes in terms of inheriting

1430. actual land aotments in the fu in the

1431. future. As for me, I came from Padan uh

1432. to my sorrow, Rachel died in the land of

1433. Canaan on the way. So again, we're

1434. mentioning suffering, not just infusing

1435. it into passages there. It's one of the

1436. hardest things in his whole life to lose

1437. Rachel. When there was still some

1438. distance to go to Ephrath, I buried her

1439. there on the way to Ephrath, that is

1440. Bethlehem. When Israel saw Joseph's

1441. sons, he said, "Who are these?" And

1442. Joseph said to his father, "They are my

1443. sons whom God has given me here." And he

1444. said, "Bring them to me, please, that I

1445. may bless them." There's a way that

1446. might get missed here that father and

1447. son are so alike. They just keep t like

1448. they don't talk about stuff without

1449. mentioning God. These are my sons would

1450. be a very normal thing to say. And I'm

1451. not saying that you every time you

1452. introduce your children, you have to say

1453. whom God has given me. But they do. They

1454. just keep pointing to back to God for

1455. what he's given them. Right? And what

1456. what is the same like when we say

1457. glorify God, what does that mean? It's

1458. pointing at him as the giver of good

1459. gifts, the giver of your children, the

1460. giver of your wife, the giver of your

1461. husband, the giver of your marriage, the

1462. giver of this church to you. He's he and

1463. and and his his giving and generous

1464. nature is just one aspect of the

1465. magnitude and multitude of his character

1466. perfections. If you want to say what's

  1467. God's glory, what's the magnitude and

1468. the multitude of his character

1469. perfections? And he's revealed them to

1470. us and reflecting those back to him,

1471. pointing to him in the sight and witness

1472. of other people that glorifies him. And

1473. they just keep doing it over and over

1474. again. Anytime they talk about

1475. something, it's like God gave me this.

1476. God brought this into my life. Okay? And

1477. he said, "Bring them to me, please, that

1478. I may bless them." Now the eyes of

1479. Israel were dim with age so that he

1480. could not see. That's a really important

1481. detail. He can't see. So Joseph brought

1482. them near him, and he kissed them and

1483. embraced them. And Israel said to

1484. Joseph, "I never expected to see your

1485. face. And behold, God has let me see

1486. your offspring also." Okay, remember

1487. when I said that something may have

1488. changed in Jacob's heart from the point

1489. where he said, "Few and evil have been

1490. the days of my sojouring and they have

1491. not attained to the days of the years of

1492. the sjourning of my fathers." Right? So

1493. that was true. He had a really hard

1494. life. Some because of his own making,

1495. others because of things that happened

1496. to him. Anyway you look at it, he had a

1497. life of seemingly one after the other

1498. hard knock hardship. Okay? And God did

1499. use it to bless him. But now he's had 17

1500. years with his son Joseph and his

1501. grandchildren. And look, look at Is it

1502. an attitude change? It seems like it may

1503. be, but I'm not even saying he

1504. necessarily had a bad attitude, but he's

1505. just, you remember when Joseph said that

1506. God has made me forget the years of my

1507. hardship. It feels like that here. I

1508. never expected to see your face and

1509. behold, God has let me see your

1510. offspring also. In other words, at the

1511. real end of Jacob's life, he witnesses

1512. and says that God has blessed me far

1513. greater than I ever expected. That's his

1514. witness. Does that make God look good

1515. when a man of 130 years who's had one of

1516. the most difficult lives recorded in

1517. scripture? Hardship after hardship still

1518. says, "God has blessed me more greatly

1519. than I ever expected. I never expected

1520. to see your face, and behold, God has

1521. let me see your offspring also." Okay,

1522. really powerful stuff. And this is where

1523. I'm getting that point for. Joseph, even

1524. with all the hardship that he's had, has

  1525. joyfully accepted his universal

1526. blessings, which we just talked about in

1527. the covenant promise. He's including

1528. some of J Joseph's sons in this, but

1529. he's also received this personal

  1530. blessing because it's not like God's

1531. promising that he's going to reunite you

1532. with Joseph and Joseph's grandchildren.

  1533. You don't even necessarily have a

1534. promise that if your grandchildren and

1535. and uh children move away that you'll

1536. get to see them really often. You don't

1537. know. God will probably be kinder to you

1538. than you expect there either. But this

1539. is what I would call a personal

1540. blessing. A blessing that just applies

1541. to an individual that's not necessarily

1542. universally promised. And this is one of

1543. those. So, you know, we're talking about

  1544. the difference between universal

1545. blessings and personal blessings. And

1546. it's where we want to shift to. Have we

1547. not just have we received the universal

1548. blessing of the revelation of Jesus as

1549. God's son and fully God and fully man

1550. and we worship him, but have you have

1551. you joyfully accepted the personal

1552. blessings? And there's something really

1553. interesting. I was going to say cool,

1554. but I think it was hard on Joseph and so

1555. I don't think cool is the right word.

1556. But there's something really instructive

1557. here for us in how sometimes we will

1558. want God to bless us or bless our

1559. children differently than he's doing,

1560. right? And we think, "Oh, there's a

1561. mistake. This can't be right." Okay,

1562. let's read on. And Joseph took them both

1563. a frame in his right hand towards

1564. Israel's left hand. So the left hand was

1565. considered a lesser blessing, right hand

1566. considered the greater blessing. Manase

1567. firstborn to his uh to his left side

1568. towards Israel's right hand and brought

1569. them near him because Joseph is

1570. expecting that that the blessing the

1571. basically the greater blessing the

1572. gressing of prominence and priority

1573. would go to the firstborn and that's not

1574. just a human tradition right that that's

1575. something the patriarchs got from God

1576. and it's something that's true in Christ

1577. is the firstborn from all creation and

1578. he inherits everything and we don't

1579. supersede him but we inherit with him as

  1580. brothers and sisters basically

1581. basically. But the point is it's not

1582. just a human tradition. Although God

1583. will not always work according to what

1584. we expect the norm is either. And this

1585. he's already shown with Jacob and Esau,

1586. right? He he said it was going to be the

1587. opposite. The younger will actually be

1588. basically the master of the older. And

1589. here that is repeated. We also should

1590. not make a principle that somehow God

  1591. favors secondborns over firstborns

1592. necessarily either. He just does what he

1593. does and he doesn't always justify it.

1594. And in this case that's happening. So

1595. let's continue. And Israel stretched out

1596. his right hand and laid it on the head

1597. of a frame. And he stretched out his

1598. left hand and laid it on the head of

1599. Manasse. He switched and he's

1600. blind. He doesn't know, right? He Joseph

1601. brought them the way that would be most

1602. natural. By the way, have you ever

1603. prayed for someone laid on hands and

1604. then like four minutes in your shoulders

1605. really burning? You know, so he's

  1606. sitting there like this. It's it's he's

1607. going out of his way. He knows something

1608. and he can't even see it. So, it's it's

  1609. by faith. It's spiritual. There's

1610. something prophetic going on here. So,

1611. crossing his hands for Manasse was the

1612. firstborn. And he blessed Joseph and

1613. said, "The God before whom my fathers

1614. Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who

1615. has been my shepherd all my life long to

1616. this day." These are very God glorifying

1617. words. The angel who has redeemed me

1618. from all evil. Bless the boys and in

1619. them let my name be carried on in the

1620. name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac and

1621. let them grow into a multitude in the

1622. midst of the earth. When Joseph saw that

1623. his father had laid his right hand on

1624. the head of Ephraim, it displeased him

1625. and he took his father's hand to move it

  1626. from Ephrain's head and Manass's head.

1627. This is the first time in the entire

1628. book of Genesis and also the only place

1629. in all the Bible where Joseph is

1630. initially somehow in opposition to God's

1631. plan. I was I realized this in the

1632. disciplehip community and I want to give

1633. a shameless plug to those now and in a

1634. moment again. Um I didn't realize that

1635. because I was studying it. I heard

1636. someone say something that it wasn't

1637. even exactly that point but it made me

1638. realize whoa Joseph's not quite right

1639. with God here. And he's the guy that has

1640. the gift of interpretation of dreams,

1641. right? So he's he's uh you have to be

1642. very close to God. He's a man of the

1643. spirit, too. And yet in this case,

1644. there's something in congruent. And so I

1645. thought, well, it kind of seems like

1646. he's he's opposing God. But we actually

1647. have to read much closer. Again, it felt

1648. really, Joseph, he seems like he has a

1649. pretty good track record. Would he all

1650. of a sudden be doing that right now? And

  1651. the reality is that's not what's

1652. happening. Let me let me read on. Um,

1653. Joseph said to his father, "Not this

1654. way, my father, since this one's the

1655. firstborn. Put your right hand on his

1656. head." What he's doing is thinking that

1657. Jacob made a mistake. He's not saying

1658. God's wrong in this blessing. He doesn't

1659. think it was God doing it. He thought he

1660. made a mistake. Okay? And the moment

1661. Jacob tells him, "No, I know." Joseph

1662. stops resisting it. Which is hugely

  1663. instructive, right? Because sometimes

1664. we'll want a certain thing for our

1665. children, want a certain thing for

1666. ourselves, want a certain thing for

1667. others, and we see God doing the

  1668. opposite. Um, we'll think that can't

1669. quite be right. But in the back of our

1670. mind, we know, well, God doesn't do

1671. wrong things. So, how do you reconcile

1672. it either way? But his father refused,

1673. verse 19, and said, "I know, my son. I

1674. know." Like, he knows, right? He knows

1675. the heartache it broke into brought into

1676. his and Esau's life that he strove to

1677. try to take away and uh uh not only

1678. Israel, Esau's blessing, but even his

1679. birthright, right? He knows what the

1680. father Joseph is thinking about what's

1681. happening here. I know, my son. I know

1682. he also shall become a people and he

1683. also shall be great. Nevertheless, the

1684. younger brother shall be greater than

1685. he, and his offspring shall become a

1686. multitude of nations. This is a

1687. prophetic blessing. This is Jacob who's

1688. blind doing what God has planned.

1689. Because God and it's not because one

1690. would be greater than the other that

1691. they get blessed like that. One will be

1692. greater than the other because they got

1693. blessed like this. That's what I mean by

1694. prophetic blessing. Blessing that will

1695. most certainly take place in the future.

1696. And I actually actually want to go

1697. there. Um did you know that for a time

1698. Ephrame as a name becomes synonymous

1699. with the name Israel? So that when God

1700. says Ephraim, he's speaking actually of

1701. the entire northern tribe of Israel.

1702. Ephraim really indeed becomes great.

1703. Both Manasse and Ephrame become

1704. powerful, prestigious warriors with lots

1705. of people in their land. And one way

1706. that they would count blessing is like

1707. the multitude of the amount of offspring

  1708. you have because every child's a

1709. blessing. So they were but but Ephrame

1710. was greater even though he was the

1711. younger in that in that blessing and and

1712. in one way uh his greatness is related

1713. to um the way God relates to him

1714. spiritually but he ultimately actually

1715. becomes a representation of all of

1716. northern Israel and that includes

1717. Manasse. So I want to go to Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31:9

1718. 31:9. I would not be surprised, although

1719. you've probably read through this if

1720. you've never really considered deeply

  1721. what this means.

1722. Um, most most Christians might not have

1723. gone through a uh whole study on

1724. Jeremiah, but 31:9 says this, "With

1725. weeping they shall come, and with pleas

1726. for mercy I will lead them back. I will

1727. make them walk by brooks of water in

1728. straight path in which they shall not

1729. stumble. for I am a father to Israel and

1730. a frame is my firstborn.

1731. So what had happened in this case is the

1732. northern tribe of Israel before the

1733. southern which is considered Judah

1734. technically that's all Israel but in in

1735. uh old covenant history you have a break

1736. between after Solomon Rayoboam and

1737. Jeroboam break off and they become two

1738. different kings one of the northern

1739. kingdom one of the southern kingdom and

1740. eventually they become so disobedient

1741. that God sends them off into exile but

1742. one to Assyria and one to Babylon. The

1743. one to Babylon is Judah and that happens

1744. later. So in this case, what Jeremiah is

1745. prophesying is that he's going to bring

1746. them back. But notice how he's using the

1747. word aphrame for all of northern Israel.

1748. For I am a father to Israel. I'm going

1749. to bring them back. And a frame is my

1750. firstborn. Okay? So he's speaking of

1751. that entire group of Israelites. That

1752. this is the way he's going to relate to

1753. them. And he has even more to say about

1754. frame. And look at the language. If

  1755. you're a father to a son or to a

1756. daughter and you remember them being

1757. young or they're young right now, you

1758. will know exactly well to some degree

1759. you will understand how the father

1760. feels. His is just an order of magnitude

1761. greater than our love. And this is what

1762. he says. Is a frame my dear son? Is he

1763. my darling child? He's talking about an

1764. entire like tribe of people. Hundreds of

1765. thousands. And to them they're like his

1766. baby boy, darling child. For as often as

1767. I speak against him, I do remember him

1768. still. Therefore, my heart yearns for

1769. him, and I will surely have no mercy on

1770. him, declares the Lord. He's angry at a

1771. frame for over and over and over again.

1772. Uh I mean, terrible false worship, child

1773. sacrifice kind of horrors, right? A

1774. frame is rebelled. But one of the most

1775. famous verses in all of Jeremiah, maybe

1776. the famous most famous one, shows God's

1777. um great mercy towards him. I'm sorry.

  1778. I'm sorry I misread that. He surely I

1779. will have mercy on him, declar declares

1780. the Lord. God had been angry with the

1781. frame because of all that he had done.

1782. And if we had time to go through

1783. Jeremiah, we would see that. But surely

1784. I will have mercy. And this very next

1785. verse is that famous verse about mercy.

1786. But you're going to see it applies to

  1787. all Gentiles, too, because it's he's

1788. God's done this for you. Verse 31 of

1789. chapter 31. Behold, the days are coming,

1790. declares the Lord, when I will make a

1791. new covenant with the house of Israel

1792. and the house of Judah. Not like the

1793. covenant I made with their fathers on

1794. the day when I took them by my by the

1795. hand to bring them out of the land of

1796. Egypt, my covenant that they broke,

1797. though I was their husband, declares the

1798. Lord. For this is the covenant that I

1799. will make with the house of Israel after

1800. those days, declares the Lord. I will

1801. put my law within them, and I will write

1802. it on their hearts, and I will be their

1803. God, and they shall be my people. Do you

1804. know that Paul says that God wrote the

1805. law on our hearts? That's the spirit of

1806. the law. And what that ultimately means,

1807. and I'll just say one thing about that,

1808. that this new covenant is not one by

1809. which you could keep the law and be

1810. declared righteous. And neither one was

1811. that one either. Remember Paul says in

1812. Galatians, they were declared righteous

1813. by faith as well. But now it's not even

1814. that we are required to keep the law at

1815. all. And this is a confusing thing for

1816. Christians. And my son, we don't have to

1817. keep the ten commandments anymore.

1818. Listen very carefully. The way that the

1819. Ten Commandments were actually designed

1820. is to show everyone the utter sinfulness

1821. of sin. You can't even keep these 10

1822. simple rules that we can all agree on

1823. are good. Right? Don't murder people.

1824. Everyone in every society in every time

1825. in history has recognized that that's a

1826. bad thing according to their enshrined

1827. laws. So don't do that. We can't do

1828. that. And what it points to is the utter

1829. sinfulness of our transgression and the

1830. righteousness of the law. And Paul even

1831. says, "So we know in our hearts that the

1832. law is good and righteous and true, but

1833. yet we covet all the time and wretched

1834. man that I can't stop, right? But

1835. therefore there is now no condemnation

1836. for those who are in Christ Jesus

1837. because they've been set free from the

1838. law to this and and been given the

1839. spirit of the law." And what that means

1840. is that God will write the law on your

1841. hearts in such a way that your desire

1842. will change. But Jesus already fulfilled

1843. it. You do nothing to fulfill the law.

1844. When you don't murder or don't lie or

1845. don't cheat or don't covet or when you

1846. don't steal. You do nothing to keep the

1847. law. It's already fulfilled. So think of

1848. like the requirements of the law as

1849. fully completed. They're done. You

1850. complete nothing. You're adding nothing

1851. to it. But he's made your very heart

1852. like a letter. Not written on tablets of

1853. stone, but written on tablets of flesh.

1854. And in this case, the the new heart. So,

1855. as a Christian with Christ dwelling in

1856. you, you'll find yourself not only

1857. desiring to do God's law as Paul did,

1858. but having the power by the spirit to do

1859. it. And how? By putting to death the

1860. misdeeds of the spirit. I basically just

  1861. paraphrase Romans 7 through8. That's

1862. exactly what that says. And that is such

  1863. an unbelievably powerful powerful

1864. blessing. And and it started with the

1865. frame. My point was here to walk you

1866. through how you get from Jesus to a

1867. frame. These prophetic blessings are

1868. always always always about Jesus even if

  1869. you don't initially see how. Let's

1870. continue. So he blessed them that day

1871. saying by you Israel will pronounce

1872. blessings saying God make you as a frame

1873. and as Manasse. Thus he put a frame

1874. before Manasse. Then Israel said to

1875. Joseph, "Behold, I'm about to die, but

1876. God will be with you and will bring you

1877. again to the land of your fathers.

1878. Moreover, I have given to you rather

1879. than your brothers one mountain slope

1880. that I took from the land of the

1881. Amorites with my sword and with my bow.

1882. And again, when he's saying to you, he's

  1883. talking about Jacob's inheritance

1884. through a frame and manasse. So, I want

1885. to conclude here with just a

1886. consideration of the application of the

1887. main point, but it's a fairly deep one.

  1888. Like I said, it's it's difficult for me

1889. to talk about without getting emotional.

1890. Um, but I some of the most broken things

1891. in my life, some of the most painful

1892. suffering I've experienced has turned

1893. into a joyful blessing that I accept.

1894. And in this case, it was a mixture of a

1895. universal and a personal blessing. One

1896. that in some ways not all Christians can

1897. experience and in another way all can.

1898. And I want to show you that there is no

1899. such thing as great blessing that comes

1900. without brokenness. And if you want to,

  1901. I don't know if I have the team. I gave

1902. it to them, but this is Genesis um I

  1903. think it's Genesis 28. It's the place

  1904. where or wait a

1905. minute. Well, it's the place where where

1906. Jacob wrestles um with uh with God. He

1907. ultimately figures out that he's

1908. wrestling with God. And um I'm going to

1909. find it here in a moment. If somebody

1910. finds it before me, let me know. Jacob

1911. feasts from Laban. It's right before he

1912. meets with Esau. So, it's got to be like

1913. 31 32. Thank you very much. The same

1914. night he arose and took his two wives,

1915. his two female servants, and his 11

1916. children, and crossed the ford of the

1917. Jab, and he took them and sent them

1918. across the stream and everything else

1919. that he had. And Jacob was left alone,

1920. and a man wrestled with him until the

1921. breaking of day. And when the man saw

1922. that he did not prevail against Jacob,

1923. he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's

1924. hip was put out of joint as he wrestled

  1925. with him. I don't know if you've ever

1926. had a joint put out of, but the bigger

1927. the joint, the more painful it is. This

1928. would have been excruciating. So, in

1929. severe pain after having wrestled all

1930. night, I was gassed after one twominute

1931. segment of wrestling in high school and

1932. I was in very good shape. Wrestling is

1933. so hard. So, you can imagine he's out of

1934. breath. All of his muscles are aching.

1935. He's at the very end of his physical

1936. strength. Now, he's getting broken by

1937. this man. Then he said, "Let me go for

1938. the day has broken." But Jacob said, "I

1939. will not let you go unless you bless

1940. me." And he said to him, "What is your

1941. name?" And he said, "Jacob." Then he

1942. said, "Your name shall no longer be

1943. Jacob in Israel, for you have striven

1944. with God and with men and have

1945. prevailed." So very clearly, it's God

1946. he's wrestling with. And you can very

1947. clearly see that God calls him, clinging

1948. to him while he breaks him, a blessing.

1949. Have you ever been broken by God in a

1950. way that like is so painful and and it

1951. makes you not humiliated, but it humbles

1952. you so deeply. It's like I like to say

1953. like he humpty dumptied you and you

1954. don't know if you're going to get put

  1955. back

1956. together. That's what this is

1957. like. God wanted a broken Jacob who

  1958. clung to

1959. him. God wants a broken you who clings

  1960. to him.

  1961. But I I can't contain my emotion because

1962. it's so painful when God breaks you like

  1963. this. I

1964. mean, because of my pride in the way

1965. that I lured the uh um led the church

1966. plant. And I I was blinded to it, but

1967. not with excuse. Like I I blinded myself

  1968. to that

1969. pride. And God had to cause the church

1970. to fall apart. And and it was people I

1971. loved that accused me of being like a

1972. cult leader and spiritually abusive. But

1973. what my real sin was that I was

1974. overbearing and too forceful and still

1975. sometimes and are. But the big

1976. difference is I never justify it when I

1977. realized it anymore. I was justifying it

1978. back then. And so man, I had dreamed for

1979. 10 years of planting a church and

1980. planned and planned and planned and

1981. planned and worked so hard and the whole

1982. thing just fell apart. And what it means

1983. is people that I love dispersed. Some

1984. still don't ever talk to me. others have

1985. ultimately reconciled, but just such

1986. pain. Such pain. And I'm I'm telling

1987. you, I would I would not want God not to

1988. do it because it was the only way to to

1989. help me take seriously how deadly that

  1990. pride

1991. was. And so I I take it with me, not

1992. like a broken hip, but like a broken

1993. femur. And to me, that the reason why I

1994. say broken femur is I was a football

1995. player and I would always just bull

1996. rush. And it's your legs you use to bull

1997. rush with. My coach would tell me, you

1998. can't just always bull rush. on the very

1999. next play I bull rushed and sacked the

2000. quarterback. So that's the kind of

2001. person I am. And when God breaks my

2002. femur and I try to bull rush, it's

2003. excruciating. So I know it's by the

2004. spirit and not by might that people have

  2005. their hearts

2006. changed. You would not like me. I don't

2007. think any one of you would even like me

2008. if God had not humbled me like that. And

2009. it's at least my personally greatest

2010. blessing in my life. I'm a better

  2011. husband. I'm a better father. I'm a

2012. better pastor and all because God helped

2013. me repent of that sin in a very deep

2014. way. So what if the thing that God is

2015. breaking in you is the pride that keeps

2016. you distant from him. I'm so much closer

2017. to God than I was then. Legalistic pride

2018. just keeps you very far from the Lord.

2019. If there was ever a desire that

2020. you that is fine to ask for God more

2021. blessing of it's closeness with him. But

2022. the reason why brokenness brokenness

2023. will always preede that blessing is that

  2024. God is

2025. holy and that we're sinful and that we

2026. justify our sin with our pride and that

2027. we sometimes don't even see it and

2028. sometimes will not give it up unless God

2029. brings excruciating pain into your

  2030. life. But man, I I wouldn't take it

2031. back. I'm not just a glutton for pain.

  2032. Sometimes I think I don't know like

2033. tevia do you always have to choose us

2034. you know like I don't know if I want the

2035. next blessing life's pretty good right

2036. now I know there's going to be a lot of

2037. pain so you know repent early and repent

2038. often you don't have to always learn

2039. through putting your head through the

2040. wall like I have in my life but man it

2041. is the pattern of the eternal

2042. gospel that suffering precedes glory it

2043. just is there is no other way. Let me

2044. let me read you a

2045. verse, probably my favorite verse in all

2046. of scripture and one that displays the

2047. glory of Christ probably better than any

2048. other one. And if you're thinking

2049. Colossians 1, you'd be right. This is

  2050. Colossians 1, chapter 15. And what I

2051. want you to notice is just the magnitude

2052. and the multitude of the glory of Jesus

2053. Christ, but also the fact that he

  2054. suffered.

2055. He is the image of the invisible God,

  2056. the firstborn of all

2057. creation. For by him all things were

2058. created, in heaven and on earth, visible

2059. and invisible, whether thrones or

2060. dominions or rulers or authorities, all

2061. things were created through him and for

2062. him. And he is before all things and in

  2063. him. All things hold

2064. together. He is the head of the body,

2065. the church. He is the beginning. He is

2066. the firstborn from the dead. That in

  2067. everything he might be

2068. preeminent. For in him all the fullness

2069. of God was pleased to

2070. dwell. And through him to reconcile to

2071. himself all things, whether on earth or

2072. in heaven, making peace by the blood of

  2073. his cross.

2074. The greatest glory of Jesus

2075. Christ is his crucifixion and

2076. resurrection. And you cannot separate

2077. them. No one has ever suffered like

2078. that. It's not just physical suffering.

2079. He was held accountable for God for the

2080. sin of the world. God made him sin to be

2081. who knew no sin so that in him we could

  2082. become the righteousness of

2083. God. Having I mean that means God poured

2084. his wrath out on him.

  2085. That's

  2086. hell. That's

2087. suffering. That's the worst thing that

2088. can happen to you. And it preceded him

2089. ascending to heaven. It preceded him

2090. being glorified. In it, he was

2091. glorified. So, in a way, it's bad news,

2092. but we know the gospel is good news. The

2093. the bad news comes before the good news.

2094. Yes, our sin has to be put to death.

2095. There will always be a breaking

2096. experience if you want to come closer to

2097. God. But he will receive you. And none

2098. of us wants to hold on to our sin

  2099. anyway. That's all that's being broken

2100. is sin in us. It's being killed. So

2101. offer to him. There's no table that's

2102. more broken than communion, is there?

2103. What does it display? It displays the

2104. blood of Christ shed for us and his body

2105. broken. So when Emily comes up here and

2106. we worship, Yeah. There is a certain

2107. amount of somber, reverent sorrow in

2108. coming to the table. But what you

2109. receive is grace you don't deserve that

2110. transforms your heart that frees you. So

2111. come come being truthful about the

  2112. thing. I don't I I think this the

2113. breaking that you experience will be

2114. have to be have to be greater if you

2115. hold on to your pride than it would be

2116. if you just come now. Whatever it is,

2117. now is the time that it will be least

2118. painful. just come to the table and if

2119. you have to confess it to someone else,

2120. I'm available, elders are available,

2121. other leaders or someone you know that's

2122. faithful. But don't hold on because

2123. again remember we elevate our sights to

2124. the things that are unseen which is

2125. heaven above and they put into context

2126. our afflictions below and said that our

2127. afflictions are outweighed entirely by

2128. the eternal weight of glory of who?

2129. Jesus Christ who died for us. So we

2130. that's how you have your attitude

2131. changed. If you're not currently joyful

2132. about your universal blessings in the

2133. gospel or joyful about the personal

2134. blessings God has given you, you can

2135. come to the table and through a painful

2136. but real experience of the death of your

2137. own selfish attitudes or whatever it is

  2138. that's blocking that. Receive God's

2139. grace and be filled with that joy

2140. through the Holy Spirit which is an

2141. amazing experience that matches how

2142. bright and beautiful it is outside. Let

2143. me pray. Heavenly Father, thank

2144. you for what has been a very powerful

2145. message to me. I am in a good time, not

2146. in a suffering time. I do not know what

2147. is around the next corner, but I know

2148. that you're good and that I want to

2149. glorify you with my life, with my

2150. attitude, with the way that I talk, with

2151. the way that I walk, and my actions and

2152. my works. And I know that there's sin in

2153. me that undermines that. And I know that

2154. sin and those in the congregation that

2155. are praying this prayer right along with

2156. me, locked step, and totally in

2157. agreement. And so I pray Lord

2158. that that we would accept that you make

2159. us obedient through suffering and that

2160. the road to glorification is not one

2161. without brokenness but after that

2162. brokenness comes blessing. So Lord make

  2163. us

2164. people who are willing to be broken by

2165. you and still cling to you in Jesus

  2166. name. Amen.
