  1. We are still in Titus chapter 1 if

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  2. you're following along with the Bible,

  3. but we'll also have it on the

  4. screens. Heavenly Father, thank you for

  5. the ways that you revealed your truth

  6. about the gospel to your Apostle Paul

  7. and the amount of time he

  8. spent studying your word so that he

  9. could faithfully teach it. And thank you

  10. that you have those words recorded and

  11. that we're able to know in our spirits

  12. that they're true and that they contain

  13. the hope of eternal life, but also

  14. things that accord with godliness in our

  15. own lives. I pray today that we would

  16. understand your warnings about those

  17. that contradict that gospel in a way

  18. that

  19. um that removes its saving power and all

  20. kinds of other ways. And I pray that we

  21. would take very seriously all the

  22. warnings that you have in your

  23. scriptures uh to oppose such people, but

  24. also to call them to repentance and to

  25. call those who may be deceived by that

  26. to repentance as well. And so it's a

  27. heart for their eternal life and not

  28. just a message of condemnation that we

  29. preach. And we pray that you would help

  30. us to uh to be aligned with your spirit

  31. in that. And we pray these things in

  32. Jesus name. Last week I gave you guys uh

  33. somewhat of a metaphor or an image of

  34. the idea of honeycombing. Um I found out

  35. someone in our congregation was a

  36. concrete engineer and I said the right

  37. words which was nice. I just repeated

  38. what Wikipedia said about that. But

  39. honeycombing is basically when there are

  40. air bubbles um or any kind of pockets of

  41. air in uh foundation or any kind of

  42. pylons or pillars in concrete. And I

  43. want to revisit that idea. um

  44. construction crews have ways of um

  45. vibrating the concrete so that the

  46. bubbles rise to the surface and there's

  47. no honeycombing. And now um unless those

  48. construction crews are cutting corners,

  49. um I I'm guessing this rarely happens

  50. and I looked up for court cases where um

  51. they're where the prosecution was trying

  52. to prove intent that the construction

  53. company had intentionally caused

  54. honeycombing. Um, and there are very few

  55. of that. Although there are laws on the

  56. books that if you intentionally

  57. destabilize a structure and if uh it in

  58. any way crumbles and falls and someone

  59. dies that you could be charged with with

  60. murder. Um, uh, proving intent is

  61. extremely difficult. And so the cases

  62. where they've been able to prove intent

  63. are very few. But they have been able to

  64. prove uh what is called reckless

  65. negligence which is well you should have

  66. known that you needed to make sure this

  67. honeycombing doesn't happen. Um you saw

  68. it once the molds were taken off you did

  69. nothing about it and then this thing

  70. collapsed and so a civil engineer um or

  71. a construction crew me may be held

  72. liable. In the case of a charge of

  73. murder, um if there was actual intent uh

  74. beforehand to cause such damage to a

  75. structure, you could get multiple life

  76. sentences for having done that if there

  77. are multiple people that died in um in a

  78. collapse like that. But even if it's um

  79. manslaughter one or manslaughter two

  80. which are also basically just

  81. differentiated between how much intent

  82. the court is able to prove there can be

  83. uh lesser life sentences but still

  84. significant prison time for doing that.

  85. So it would be a very serious thing if

  86. somebody intended to destabilize a

  87. building during it the foundation

  88. pouring or during the pouring of of

  89. different pillars. And I want you to

  90. think about imagine if um someone had

  91. done that to the house you're living in

  92. and you had no idea and then a part of

  93. it collapses on one of your children.

  94. God forbid that. The reason why I'm I'm

  95. saying that though is that in this case,

  96. the things that Paul is warning us

  97. against and things he's calling us to

  98. stand against are uh people who are

  99. teaching either a false false gospel, a

  100. legalistic gospel, and several other

  101. different kinds of false teaching that

  102. we will walk through um in what I would

  103. call like their archetypal forms. They

  104. just keep repeating themselves

  105. throughout history. There's not that

  106. many new ways to come up with

  107. contradicting the Bible and they repeat.

  108. But um if that's intentional and you and

  109. and you know that's intentional, the

  110. building collapse would be like watching

  111. one of your kids get deceived away from

  112. the truth. And it happens more than you

  113. know. Um maybe you do know uh how often

  114. it happens. But as I was studying for

  115. this particular passage and studying

  116. passages about false teaching, I was

  117. amazed at just how many warnings there

  118. are in the Old Testament and the New

  119. Testament about teaching something that

  120. is blatantly contradictory of the gospel

  121. of the truth of God's word. So many

  122. warnings. So, I've learned that when God

  123. repeats himself, especially when he

  124. repeats himself over and over and over

  125. again, it shows us the the intensity and

  126. the urgency for us to be um for us to

  127. have an urgency and for us to be duly

  128. warned about that thing. And it's

  129. interesting if you have not had

  130. experience with someone teaching

  131. something blatantly false from scripture

  132. or had somebody else affected by that in

  133. a way that deeply harmed their faith or

  134. maybe that caused them to walk away from

  135. relationship with you or walk away from

  136. relationship with the church. Remember

  137. last week we talked about the mortar of

  138. the building blocks. We're the spiritual

  139. stones. Jesus is the foundation, but the

  140. mortar is uh relationships to him and

  141. relationships to one another. And so

  142. that's what ultimately crumbles when

  143. people are deceived by uh false

  144. teaching. And I have no intent to say

  145. that every different interpretation is

  146. false teaching. We need to be very

  147. careful um uh not to be too extreme

  148. about that kind of thing. And so that's

  149. never what I'm intending even if maybe

  150. it sounds like that. It's not what I'm

  151. intending to mean. Uh you're going to

  152. see me walk through this scripture um

  153. Titus 1 verse 10-16 and mention

    Titus 1:10–16

  154. different kinds of examples of false

  155. teaching, but they're all uh really

  156. highlevel serious black and white kind

  157. of issues, not things that I would

  158. consider we need to have charity over of

  159. of different um

  160. uh interpretation that doesn't have

  161. malicious intent behind it. Okay? So

  162. that's not what I'm talking about. But

  163. the reason why I mentioned the idea, the

  164. image of you having someone you loved or

  165. knew and cared about die in a building

  166. collapse, um, false teaching doesn't

  167. just like cause physical death, but it

  168. it can cause deception that makes a

  169. shipwreck of somebody's faith for time.

  170. Um, it can cause serious relational

  171. damage uh in people's hearts in

  172. relationship to their elders, their

  173. teachers, their friends in church, other

  174. Christians, and it can be extremely

  175. painful. But if you have not experienced

  176. that damage, it's not as easy to take it

  177. as seriously as if you have experienced

  178. that damage. So, anybody that has had

  179. any kind of building collapse and

  180. affected somebody uh would take very

  181. seriously the importance of following

  182. the guidelines and the safety

  183. precautions and any kind of inspection

  184. rules that there are. And they would not

  185. want their crew or anybody else or even

  186. if they didn't work in that industry to

  187. take shortcuts. But you would you would

  188. not really think of somebody who took

  189. shortcuts on the same level as like we

  190. have a word for it. That's reckless

  191. negligence. It's bad. But it's not the

  192. same thing as murder in the first or

  193. second degree where you intentionally

  194. did something that you knew could lead

  195. to somebody's death or even pre-planned

  196. that would lead to somebody's death.

  197. Right? That's murder in the first

  198. degree. It's like when you actually it's

  199. not a crime of passion or something, but

  200. you pre-planned this like you

  201. premeditated that thing. So, one thing

  202. that I want us to realize, and Paul will

  203. make this point, is that false teachers

  204. know what they're doing. They know what

  205. they're doing. And it's very hard to

  206. prove that intent in some cases that I

  207. want to show you that too. The kinds of

  208. pieces of evidence that you can start

  209. putting together to see there's bad

  210. intent here. You know, I'll give you an

  211. example uh of not false teaching. You

  212. know that some churches will baptize

  213. infants. We call that infant baptism.

  214. And some churches believe in believers

  215. baptism. This would be a classic example

  216. of an interpretational issue. I've I've

  217. never even heard anybody, but I also

  218. think it would be outrageous to claim

  219. that anybody that teaches infant baptism

  220. is a false teacher. You can disagree

  221. with that. Our church does. We're a

  222. believer's Baptist church. It means that

  223. we look for a believable profession of

  224. faith before you're baptized. But I have

  225. friends that are infant Baptists and

  226. we'll discuss scripture and and and go

  227. to the places where we disagree and uh

  228. it might even be in some cases a sharp

  229. disagreement. But neither of us thinks,

  230. "Oh, that person's an intentional false

  231. teacher. I don't even think it's

  232. recklessly negligent. I think there's

  233. people that in the sincerity of their

  234. hearts think that what the very best

  235. thing is according to scripture is to

  236. baptize infants." So that would not be

  237. an example of either reckless negligence

  238. or intent. But some of the examples Paul

  239. mentions here, he says that their, for

  240. example, their motive is shameful gain.

  241. They're teaching that and their intent

  242. is to make money with it. Pedalling the

  243. gospel for profit kind of thing. So, one

  244. of the hardest thing to do, but one of

  245. the things that's important to learn how

  246. to do is discern when someone has a

  247. malicious intent with what they're

  248. teaching. Because if you realize they

  249. have a malicious intent, then then

  250. there's an urgency to warn people about

  251. that. Just like if you saw someone doing

  252. something on a construction crew at your

  253. neighbor's building project that you

  254. would knew, maybe you're a construction

  255. engineer yourself, so you've been

  256. trained up in this, or you're a a

  257. concrete engineer, and you know what

  258. they're doing is not just like a mistake

  259. or they're leaving something out. Even

  260. then, you might, you know, want to say

  261. something, but they're doing something

  262. that, you know, purposefully

  263. destabilizes the foundation. You would

  264. want to warn your neighbor, hey,

  265. something's wrong here. Make sure the

  266. inspector looks at what happened. I

  267. think I see something fishing going on.

  268. Right. The same thing happens here in

  269. scripture that um it's not just the

  270. elders, it's not just pastors, it's the

  271. entire congregation that needs to be

  272. warned and be able to discern what false

  273. teaching is and then oppose it. But

  274. there's an extremely important point

  275. that without which our opposition of

  276. such false teaching would turn into

  277. hypocrisy. Um, and we'll talk about the

  278. the very way that Paul is opposing the

  279. circumcision party. And that

  280. circumcision party is not just about

  281. people that wanted people to get

  282. circumcised, but it's a sign that you're

  283. putting yourself under the law of Moses,

  284. right? So, the reason why that's

  285. hypocrisy is that nobody can actually

  286. keep the law. And these people were

  287. teaching that you actually can. You need

  288. to get circumcised. And that's like one

  289. of the first works of the law. And and

  290. if you keep the law, it's works

  291. righteousness. You've heard it before.

  292. then you'll be right with God. And they

  293. were in the cretan church. We're this is

  294. a letter that is written to Titus while

  295. he's on cree so that he would put things

  296. in order um uh for the sake of the

  297. knowledge of truth that leads to

  298. godliness. So right doctrine that leads

  299. to morally right behavior and practice.

  300. And the the

  301. the problem with denouncing even the

  302. circumcision party without an offer to

  303. them of repentance that their faith

  304. would be sound is that you're also being

  305. a hypocrite. And that's the side that we

  306. can fall either we could fall off on one

  307. side and not take false teaching very

  308. urgently. That would be naive, Paul

  309. says. But there's another side where you

  310. can get uh where the only message you

  311. have is condemnation.

  312. So, for example, think about maybe one

  313. of your kids. I don't know if you knew

  314. this, but John Piper, famous preacher,

  315. one of his sons is in this category, and

  316. he had to do the extremely difficult

  317. thing of putting Abraham Piper out of

  318. his church. I think it's in Minnesota,

  319. Minneapolis. It's it's a Bethlehem

  320. Baptist church. And uh because he was

  321. just that, a blatant false teacher. And

  322. now he has a Tik Tok where all he does

  323. is try to undermine the word where he

  324. just says look at all these

  325. contradictions kind of thing. Extremely

  326. painful. Well, do you think John Piper

  327. hopes that Abraham Piper would repent

  328. and be saved? He's his father. Of course

  329. he would. Right? But if your son was

  330. taken in by his false teaching, you

  331. might be so angry at him that all you

  332. want is condemnation for him. Okay? Just

  333. like it would be very difficult in your

  334. heart to forgive a person who through

  335. either reckless negligence or intent

  336. caused a building to collapse on one of

  337. your kids. So it's not in a neutral

  338. environment that we preach a gospel of

  339. grace even to false teachers. So there's

  340. a rebuke there. It's we have to

  341. contradict what they're saying and teach

  342. the right thing. But Paul says, "So that

  343. they might be sound in faith." In

  344. another place, that they might um escape

  345. the snare of the devil. That they were

  346. captured for a time by him. So there is

  347. hope for false teachers. Sometimes it

  348. feels very slim, but I I think I've set

  349. it up enough for you to understand what

  350. I'm talking about with my main point.

  351. Let's put up the main point here. So

  352. this is the main point of what Paul is

  353. trying to teach in Titus 1 10-16. And it

  354. is that the purpose of rebuking false

  355. teachers is to protect the church and

  356. call for repentance and sound faith.

  357. That includes not just them, but also

  358. those that were deceived by that false

  359. teaching. You remove the last part, it's

  360. like what Paul calls a noisy gong, not

  361. love, also not the gospel. But you can't

  362. remove the first part either because we

  363. actually have to say what's true. Um

  364. otherwise there's no correction of it

  365. and no protection. So the purpose of

  366. rebuking false teachers is to protect

  367. the church and call for repentance and

  368. sound faith. And as with all true main

  369. points from scripture, they are

  370. impossible to actually apply apart from

  371. the power of the spirit. Soon as you try

  372. to do it in your flesh, you'll either be

  373. the noisy gong or the one that's just

  374. always really loving without any truth.

  375. You fall off on either side. Uh Jesus

  376. will fold grace and truth and we have

  377. his spirit living in us. So, at no point

  378. ever ought to we to think that we can

  379. accomplish uh obeying a point like this

  380. in any deep way without the spirit. Let

  381. me state it one more time. The purpose

  382. of rebuking false teachers is to protect

  383. the church and call for repentance and

  384. sound faith. Let's get into verse one

  385. here. He said or verse 10. Uh Paul says,

  386. "For there are many who are

  387. insubordinate, empty talkers and

  388. deceivers, especially those of the

  389. circumcision party." We're jumping up in

  390. middle of the stream. What we had just

  391. gotten done talking about last week is

  392. that part of putting in order what

  393. remains to be put in order is for Titus

  394. to call elders who are qualified. And

  395. the sermon is not about those qualified

  396. elders. It touches on them though

  397. because that's what the the context is.

  398. And verse nine, just a moment he gets he

  399. goes that one he said that one of the

  400. qualifications of elders among other

  401. things like being a lover of good uh not

  402. being uh given to uh drunkenness or

  403. quick-tempered or the husband of one

  404. wife able to manage his household well

  405. um and um uh lead his children to be

  406. obedient. those kinds of things is also

  407. in verse 9 says he must hold firm to the

  408. trustworthy word is taught so that he

  409. may able be able to give instruction and

  410. sound doctrine and also rebuke those who

  411. contradict

  412. it and like I said this is a situation

  413. where there's a building project of the

  414. church being built up and it there are

  415. construction workers that the enemy has

  416. planted who are actually intentionally

  417. trying to destabilize the church for

  418. some kind of gain of their own. Okay. So

  419. maybe some are doing it through reckless

  420. negligence or just negligence. That can

  421. happen if you don't study God's word. Um

  422. I remember in seminary a professor said

  423. that uh we have to still keep the

  424. Sabbath. And he made all these points

  425. about keeping the Sabbath. And it almost

  426. convinced me until I went to Colossians

  427. where it talks about um that that that's

  428. a legalistic claim and that the sha the

  429. the the gospel is the shadow and the

  430. object that casts that shadow is Jesus

  431. and what the go well excuse me the

  432. Sabbath is a shadow and Jesus is the

  433. shadowcaster. In other words, he's the

  434. object. He's the substance. He's the

  435. reality about what the Sabbath is about.

  436. So it is not about legalistically

  437. keeping one day. The Bible says that if

  438. you keep one day and that's your

  439. conviction as unto the Lord, that's

  440. good. Or if you see all days as equally

  441. holy and you keep them unto the Lord,

  442. that's good as well. You can have

  443. personal convictions about it. However,

  444. um the importance is that we're resting

  445. from our works in God's grace. That's

  446. what the Sabbath is about. You can read

  447. Hebrews 4 on that, right? But some of

  448. the scriptures about this being like an

  449. eternal covenant that you have to keep

  450. it and that Christians just completely

  451. put aside the Sabbath. this is what this

  452. teacher was teaching were I was like

  453. wait a minute is he right like I was

  454. much younger in my faith and still being

  455. trained up and I hadn't been exposed to

  456. counter teaching to that there's

  457. actually a way to keep the Sabbath

  458. legalistically that ruins the whole

  459. purpose you go to Israel one of the

  460. rules that they have is that on the

  461. Sabbath which would be Saturday um you

  462. can't press any elevator buttons because

  463. that's a work and so all of them are

  464. already pressed which means that every

  465. elevator stops at every single level. Is

  466. that what the Sabbath is about? That was

  467. never what the Sabbath is about. And

  468. that's not resting in God's grace.

  469. That's just a superficial works thing,

  470. right? That gets you nothing. So, we

  471. pray for Israel and pray for people that

  472. have um that are deceived by that kind

  473. of level. What I call that is like a

  474. shallow application of God's word.

  475. That's always the problem with legalism.

  476. It's so shallow. There's not inner

  477. transformation. Right? So, again, back

  478. to verse 10. For there are many who are

  479. insubordinate. So people that are not

  480. submissive to God's word, they refuse to

  481. obey uh they refuse to obey church

  482. leaders. They refuse to obey um God.

  483. They never submit to one another in

  484. reverence for Christ. That's what

  485. insubordination means. Empty talkers.

  486. You know exactly what empty talkers are.

  487. People they have lots of words, but the

  488. the content is just a bunch of fluff and

  489. air. Uh you have deceivers. Okay. Now, I

  490. think we all know naturally that if

  491. somebody is trying to deceive you,

  492. there's intent behind that, right? You

  493. ever been deceived by someone, finding

  494. out later what they did was pre-planned.

  495. They were trying to tell you something

  496. that's false because there's some kind

  497. of gain. We call that manipulation is a

  498. type of uh of deceiving, right? So,

  499. there's and you're already seeing

  500. there's different kinds of people to

  501. watch out for. People that are just

  502. rebellious. they don't ever subordinate

  503. themselves. Um, and we ought to watch

  504. out how we talk about our government

  505. even when we disagree because God says

  506. that we need to be subordinate to the

  507. leaders he's put in place. And it's not

  508. just the good ones that he puts in

  509. place. He's sovereign over all of it. So

  510. sometime that's that's very difficult.

  511. And you have to discern if what is being

  512. asked of you or commanded of you by law

  513. is actually something that causes you to

  514. break your relationship with the Lord by

  515. disobeying him. Right? His law is

  516. supreme. So we talked about that quite a

  517. bit in the co era. I'm not going to

  518. rehash all those ideas, but then he

  519. says, "Especially those of the

  520. circumcision party." Okay. So, I want to

  521. just spend a little bit of time on the

  522. circumcision party. Um, and I also want

  523. to give you a little bit of structure of

  524. the sermon. I thought one of the most

  525. valuable things that I could do

  526. considering that Paul is listing these

  527. different kinds of categories of people

  528. to watch out for that will end up

  529. contradicting the gospel or something um

  530. else in scripture that maybe finds its

  531. way kind of permeating it, poisoning the

  532. gospel from the outside. Um, and and

  533. what I'm going to do is I'm going to

  534. give you seven different I would call

  535. them archetypes of false teaching. They

  536. just keep happening over and over again.

  537. I don't know that they're exhaustive.

  538. Uh, it was hard for me to think of one

  539. that doesn't really fit into one of

  540. these categories, but it's not like

  541. scripture says, "Hey, there are seven

  542. archetypes of false teaching." Um, I'm

  543. showing you verses that mention this

  544. kind of false teaching. Um, but also

  545. it's partially experiential and you'll

  546. know immediately. It's like, "Oh, yeah,

  547. I know. I know someone in that category

  548. or I've heard of people that fit in that

  549. category. Okay, so if you're thinking um

  550. a when is the sermon going to end right

  551. after 7. So it'll give you an idea uh

  552. where we're going through and 7 is going

  553. to be by far we're spending the most

  554. time on it because they're not

  555. necessarily ranked in the order they

  556. show up here in the verses. The way that

  557. I've ranked 1 through 7 is by their

  558. difficulty to discern. One's going to be

  559. very easy. seven is going to be

  560. extremely hard. I have seen the

  561. archetype of a type seven, it's just my

  562. type, type seven, uh, false teacher, um,

  563. deceive what I believed at the time were

  564. relatively mature

  565. Christians. So, we have to be careful.

  566. And what I'm going to be trying to do is

  567. showing you the kinds of evidences

  568. you're looking for that someone is doing

  569. something like that with intent. Okay?

  570. Again, I think e one would be very easy.

  571. Also uh fe please don't feel patronized

  572. by the simple language. What happened

  573. was Isaiah asked me he had read a uh

  574. verse that talked about that heresies

  575. will be uh introduced secretly and if

  576. they're introduced secretly how can we

  577. know the false teacher? How do we know?

  578. And so I I said you know and and I it

  579. was just rattling off and at the time I

  580. had a list of five. These are the kinds

  581. of evidences of false teachers that I

  582. know are were warned about in scripture

  583. and that I've also experienced. And so

  584. then I decided we're at the dinner

  585. table. I'll put them in really simple uh

  586. terms that kids can memorize. Okay. So

  587. they're still in those terms because I

  588. think adults could memorize them too in

  589. that way or that they would be more

  590. memorable. Um but you'll you're going to

  591. laugh when you see how um how simplistic

  592. they are. Um but that's just for memory

  593. sake. So let's continue here because

  594. what it says about the the

  595. insubordinate, the empty talkers, the

  596. deceivers, and the circumcision party.

  597. And even in Paul's writing, that's not

  598. exhaustive. He mentions other examples

  599. as well. He says they must be silenced

  600. since they are upsetting whole families

  601. by teaching for shameful gain what they

  602. ought not to teach. If you've ever

  603. experienced someone teaching something

  604. false that is so contrary to something

  605. really clearly black and white in

  606. scripture, it's one way. Scriptures make

  607. it very clear and it's not the other

  608. way. But that person says actually it's

  609. this way too or it's not that way, it's

  610. this way. Um, people will leave churches

  611. over that. Churches will split right

  612. down the middle. Children are always

  613. harmed in a church split because the the

  614. youth group or the kids ministry ends up

  615. falling apart as well. And then their

  616. experience was that the love that they

  617. experienced in the church is not

  618. reliable. This happened to me at a at a

  619. church. I I'm intentionally not

  620. mentioning it. I'm not uh in the

  621. business of just trying to slam churches

  622. all the time. If there's a church that's

  623. teaching something absolutely false, I

  624. don't think it's wrong to call it out by

  625. name. But in this case, I'm not going to

  626. do that. But um the church fell apart in

  627. a church split and people got

  628. unbelievably nasty about things. So

  629. nasty. No fruit of the spirit on either

  630. side of the split. It seemed there were

  631. some people, but it was just it was

  632. devastating. And I I watched friends

  633. that went to Lake Owiggo High School

  634. that uh just walked away from the

  635. church, stopped coming to a youth group

  636. from either church. They kind of form

  637. two different churches. So, and and

  638. imagine the parents of those kids. What

  639. are they going to tell them? They're

  640. like, "You're all just hypocrites." You

  641. know, you say you love me and then you

  642. just don't even act like Christians

  643. towards each other, right? I mean,

  644. that's what I said in my heart, too. And

  645. then I found out later, surprise, I'm a

  646. hypocrite as well. And I'm not really

  647. any better than them. The call is to

  648. obedience and truth and love. And it can

  649. be very difficult to um maintain

  650. operation within the Holy Spirit through

  651. surrender when you're angry at people

  652. and you feel really justified because

  653. they were destabilizing the concrete of

  654. the church and watch out for that. So

  655. since Paul says especially the

  656. circumcision party when we get to that

  657. particular point um which uh let me pull

  658. out my little list here will be uh point

  659. three. We'll spend a little bit more

  660. time there since Paul says especially.

  661. Yeah, that one is um uh the third

  662. archetype. Okay, but let's continue

  663. reading here. I'm going to finish

  664. reading all the way through here cuz

  665. most of the archetypes are drawn

  666. directly from here and you'll see them.

  667. Uh Paul continues and says, "One of the

  668. cretins, a prophet of their own, said

  669. cretins are always liars, evil beasts,

  670. lazy glutton. This testimony is true."

  671. It cracks me up every time that Paul is

  672. using probably Epimenity's words here uh

  673. instead of his own slightly distancing

  674. self but then double stamping what he

  675. says. Therefore, rebuke them sharply

  676. that they may be sound in faith. Now, it

  677. may seem that this is just about the

  678. cretins, but remember the context here

  679. is rebuking false teaching. And so, I

  680. believe that it it it includes the

  681. cretins that were deceived by those um

  682. uh false teachings, but also even the

  683. false teachers themselves. And I will I

  684. will show you um a verse at the end of

  685. the sermon that really proves that from

  686. second Timothy that even false teachers

  687. can repent. Um so it is not clear

  688. whether they're uh at any given time

  689. actually um committing the blasphemy of

  690. the spirit. The blasphemy of the spirit

  691. is when you fully and finally call what

  692. the spirit calls good evil. There's no

  693. other conviction for you then if you're

  694. going to call that. That's what they

  695. said. They said that Jesus wasn't doing

  696. his miracles by the spirit but by a

  697. demon. And that was evidence that that

  698. some of them were committing the

  699. blasphem of the spirit. So only

  700. unforgivable sin and we do not know uh

  701. when someone is necessarily committing

  702. it and we ought not to think that we do.

  703. Um it can be happening. Um and and false

  704. teachers would likely be in the category

  705. of some of the people that are doing it.

  706. But we're still calling them to a sound

  707. faith. Verse 14, not devoting themselves

  708. to Jewish myth myths and the commands of

  709. people who turn away from the truth. To

  710. the pure, all things are pure, but to

  711. the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is

  712. pure. But both their minds and their

  713. consciences are defiled. They profess to

  714. know God, but they deny him by their

  715. works. They are detestable, disobedient,

  716. unfit for any good work. So you, by the

  717. way, this is a little side point

  718. regarding um uh a an evidence about

  719. false teachers that fits in every seven

  720. categories. there's no to say to begin

  721. with. Um the Bible talks about

  722. how it's not right to use kindness as

  723. the only rubric by which you um evaluate

  724. someone's character. Do you know why?

  725. Because the enemy multiplies his kisses

  726. and the enemy is a flatterer. So if the

  727. only thing you're looking for to see

  728. whether a person is trustworthy,

  729. reliable, good in the sense that they're

  730. righteous by faith, is that they're kind

  731. to you, you're going to you're going to

  732. be particularly susceptible to that kind

  733. of deception from the enemy. And I think

  734. that's an area that the church is really

  735. weak. First of all, it feels really good

  736. when people are kind to you. Um but but

  737. kindness is not enough. But guess what

  738. never feels kind?

  739. Rebuke, right? I mean, you're supposed

  740. to do it in gentleness. We'll go to the

  741. passage that talks about that. You're

  742. supposed to be perfectly courteous. Ad

  743. homminum attacks and and saying, "Oh,

  744. uh, you know, um, saying mean things

  745. about people that he cares about." Those

  746. kinds of crooked attacks are not what we

  747. use to rebuke false teachers in that

  748. way. Um, but but rebuke is like probably

  749. the heaviest form of correction there is

  750. other than church discipline, you know?

  751. So you might say like there's sometimes

  752. there's a a correct development

  753. encouragement. The next level up

  754. intensity is uh exhortation. The next

  755. would be like admonition. The one after

  756. that might be actually literally called

  757. correction. Then reproof, then rebuke,

  758. then church discipline. The the most

  759. serious tool church can enact in the

  760. case of a of a false teacher or someone

  761. that's being divisive. Um, and so I I

  762. think to myself, I want to ma match uh

  763. if if I feel that there's a brother in

  764. Christ that needs some kind of

  765. correction, uh, match the tone of my

  766. voice to the level of intensity that the

  767. Holy Spirit is guiding me to. Um, so so

  768. you don't go come in hot with a rebuke

  769. uh with someone that's just has maybe uh

  770. a misunderstanding on a worldview issue.

  771. You talk about it gently and lovingly.

  772. But a there is some force in a rebuke.

  773. You need to be convicted that what is

  774. being said is so false that it has to be

  775. strongly opposed. Okay? So if if you

  776. think that the only mark of good

  777. Christianity is kindness, well, you're

  778. going to b at any kind of correction

  779. because, well, that's not kind. And you

  780. hear that all the time. Oh, you're

  781. judging me cuz you're correcting me.

  782. It's an old trick to just try to

  783. insulate yourself from hearing anything

  784. that's painful. faithful are the wounds

  785. of a

  786. friend. And those often times the

  787. they're not wounds like them literally

  788. taking a knife and stabbing you in the

  789. back. They're the kind of wounds where

  790. it's painful to hear that there's some

  791. kind of sin in your life that they're

  792. seeing that you don't see. Right? That's

  793. that's a faithful wound when someone

  794. tells you. You should hold on to those

  795. kinds of friends. Um often times in my

  796. experience, I say in American

  797. Christianity, I'm only comparing to

  798. German Christianity. Germans will tell

  799. you what they think and they won't

  800. always be gentle about it. Uh, but often

  801. times the only time I hear an American

  802. tell you what they actually think is

  803. when they're really angry at you. That's

  804. when you really know. It ought not to

  805. be. So, we ought to be able to speak the

  806. truth in love to somebody gently in in

  807. the coolness of the day when we're calm,

  808. when we thought about it carefully, when

  809. we've given them time to prepare. I want

  810. to talk about something that might be

  811. difficult. Right? So again, do not use

  812. kindness as your only rubric. You will

  813. get taken in. So let's go to the very

  814. first type. I think this would probably

  815. be in the category of either

  816. insubordinate or empty talkers. And

  817. let's put the first one up. Bible bad

  818. and undermine. Okay. Uh all the other

  819. ones are Bible good. And Bible bad just

  820. means that the person that's uh saying

  821. the false thing uh the the false teacher

  822. of this kind of type openly states that

  823. they believe the Bible is a bad thing, a

  824. dangerous thing to believe. This is one

  825. of the reasons why this is the easiest

  826. one to discern. Okay? And then what

  827. they'll do is they'll go on to undermine

  828. it and show you all kinds of different

  829. contradictions. Um often times I I think

  830. an atheist is in this category. I'm

  831. assuming everyone knows what an atheist

  832. is. It's not somebody that attends a uh

  833. actually I hope there are atheists at at

  834. a because that means they'll hear the

  835. gospel preached. I don't know what we'd

  836. call those like biblical term we'd be

  837. like atheite or I don't know what they

  838. want to be called. I'm just messing

  839. around. But um an atheist is someone

  840. that doesn't believe that God exists,

  841. you know. And there's I think a range of

  842. different type of you can have an

  843. atheist that seems really angry and is

  844. like making their life a mission to

  845. prove that God doesn't exist or an

  846. atheist that really is something we call

  847. an agnostic like I don't know. I don't

  848. think so but I don't know. And that

  849. makes a difference. Usually an agnostic

  850. is not going around trying to undermine

  851. uh the validity of the Bible even if

  852. they don't think it's valid. They don't

  853. have a big um dog in the fight to try to

  854. do that. But somebody that has um that

  855. dog in the fight will will consistently

  856. point out contradictions in the Bible.

  857. Okay, let me give you one. This is from

  858. the American I don't know if it's the

  859. American Atheist Society. Um but uh

  860. basic yeah American atheists website and

  861. and their point is and I bring this one

  862. up particularly because it comes up in

  863. this verse uh this was from Genesis

    Genesis 17:10

  864. 17:10 so it's somewhat fresh in our

  865. minds from two two years ago uh but uh

  866. this is my covenant which and they're

  867. quoting the KJV this is my covenant

  868. which ye shall keep between me and you

  869. and thy seed after thee. Every manch

  870. child among you shall be circumcised.

  871. Okay. So, they're saying that's a

  872. command in the Bible. And then what the

  873. New Testament says, if you be

  874. circumcised, Christ shall profit you

  875. nothing. So, one's a command to be

  876. circumcised. And one saying that it's

  877. worthless, right? So, what's that about?

  878. That would be Galatians 5:2. Well, you

    Galatians 5:2

  879. all know if you've been around a

  880. teaching uh of the Bible between the two

  881. covenants, there are two covenants.

  882. the one covenant. It was indeed

  883. commanded that they would be circumcised

  884. and that would include them as a citizen

  885. in the nation of Israel. It would be an

  886. inclusion that they're making a covenant

  887. with God uh to to keep the law. And by

  888. that time that law was not just some

  889. kind of religious idea, but it was their

  890. civil law too. It's how their whole

  891. nation functioned, right? So there's all

  892. these different it chaperoned evil. And

  893. but but in the New Testament, Paul

  894. actually reveals to us that even in the

  895. Old Testament, this is what Galatians is

  896. about. it. Righteousness was never by

  897. keeping the law. Remember, was Abraham

  898. declared righteous by faith before or

  899. after he was

  900. circumcised before. That's a point Paul

  901. makes in Galatians. So, he was never

  902. declared righteous because of any other

  903. works, including the work of getting

  904. circumcised, which in itself is a work,

  905. but it's also a work that um basically

  906. symbolizes the covenant that you are

  907. going to put yourself under the law and

  908. keep it all. That was the big problem

  909. with the Judaizers in cree. The cretins

  910. that um supposedly had become Christians

  911. but were still of the circumcision

  912. party. That would be Pharisees or any

  913. kind of other Sadducees or lawyers of

  914. the law that uh indeed studied the law

  915. really well. But uh what they taught was

  916. a form of of works righteousness. Okay.

  917. So, and that gets into a whole different

  918. category. But we know there's no

  919. contradiction here. Uh uh the New

  920. Testament isn't saying that circumcision

  921. was was always worthless. It's saying

  922. that now if you were to be circumcised,

  923. not in a medical sense, but in the sense

  924. that you're committing to keep all of

  925. the law, that just breaks the foundation

  926. of the gospel. Right? We need to repent

  927. of all of our works and realize that the

  928. only saving power, as you've heard

  929. before, is by grace alone, through faith

  930. alone, in Christ alone. We can thank the

  931. original Luther for for teaching that

  932. from Romans and clearing that up for the

  933. church when it was very much muddied. Um

  934. so again that that's not even a

  935. contradiction but you can see how to

  936. someone that doesn't have the spirit of

  937. God living in them it would be. So the

  938. conclusion of this atheist site is that

  939. what is incredible about the Bible is

  940. not its divine authorship. It's that

  941. such a concoction of contradictory

  942. nonsense could be believed by anyone to

  943. have been written by an omnisient God.

  944. to do so, one would first have to not

  945. read the book, which is the practice of

  946. most Christians, or if one does read it,

  947. dump it in the trash, uh, dump in the

  948. trash one's rational intelligence, to

  949. become a fool for God. In other words,

  950. okay, so I want you to hear, especially

  951. with that last verse, to become a fool

  952. for God, in other words. Satan is behind

  953. all false teaching ultimately or one of

  954. his minions. and he is is brilliant and

  955. brilliant enough to help false teachers

  956. do all the way down to to the seventh

  957. archetype that we get to. And you're

  958. going to see how tricky it gets. But he

  959. will also just blatantly contradict the

  960. truth. One way to know what Satan's

  961. purpose is is that whatever God says we

  962. should do will glorify God. Satan wants

  963. himself to be glorified. That means that

  964. he needs to tell us to do the opposite

  965. of what God says. So, let me go to um

  966. Psalm 14:1 and show you what God says

    Psalms 14:1

  967. about the claim that he doesn't exist.

  968. The fool says in his heart, "There is no

  969. God. They are corrupt. They do

  970. abominable deeds. There is none who does

  971. good." So, God looks down into the heart

  972. of someone who's made a hardened claim

  973. that he doesn't exist. God knows you

  974. have to suppress the truth of what can

  975. be naturally known from creation. Romans

  976. 1. To do that, it makes you foolish. So,

  977. what does Satan write back? No, you're

  978. the fool, God. Do you see it? He's

  979. behind that idea to to claim it's a it's

  980. a blatant contradiction of what God

  981. says. It's foolish to say there's no

  982. God. And then Satan says, "No, it's

  983. foolish to trust God." Okay, so that

  984. one's really simple. Um, one other verse

  985. that may pertain to this kind of thing,

  986. Colossians 2 uh 8, because behind most

  987. atheism is secular humanism. So the idea

  988. is not that you need to repent that you

  989. need to believe in the cross that that

  990. the justice of God that he can forgive

  991. you now because your sin has actually

  992. been punished. That's the gospel. Um but

  993. so for example here it says so see to it

  994. that no one takes you captive by

  995. philosophy. Secular humanism is a is a

  996. form of philosophy or empty deceit

  997. according to human tradition according

  998. to the elemental spirits of um or

  999. another word for spirits there's like

1000. elemental rules principles of the world

1001. and not according to Christ and so I

1002. think basically being deceived by a

  1003. philosophy that's anti-gosspel would be

1004. in this category but let's not spend any

1005. more time in that one because I don't

1006. think the church is particularly

1007. susceptible to someone just being like

1008. Bible bad and it contradicts itself.

1009. Let's go to the next one. Um, and it is

1010. Bible good but blatant heresy. Okay,

1011. when I say blatant heresy, um, uh, let's

1012. actually just read what Paul says about

1013. that, how serious it is. Galatians

    Galatians 1:8–9

1014. 1:8-9. But even if we or an angel from

1015. heaven should preach to you a gospel

1016. contrary to the one we preach to you,

1017. let him be accursed. I think I have one

1018. more verse. Yeah. as we have said

1019. before. So now I say again, if anyone is

1020. preaching to you a gospel contrary to

1021. the one you received, let him be

1022. accursed. Um Paul even goes on to say

1023. even if it's an angel you know um so you

  1024. know pseudo-Christian hybrid religions

1025. that talk about an angel having appeared

1026. to them Mormonism or the Church of uh

1027. Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has

1028. that claim and and then they include

1029. blatant heresy that Jesus was actually a

1030. created being or Jehovah's Witnesses say

1031. that he's actually identical to Michael.

1032. Jesus and Michael are the same person

  1033. and so he's a created being. He's not

1034. God. Um, and he's not eternally

1035. begotten. As no, no matter how

1036. infinitely far back you go into time,

1037. you never find a starting point to

1038. Jesus. He's not eternal like God is

1039. eternal. That would be uh one of those

1040. kinds of blatant heresies. And there's

1041. so many different ones like, oh, the

1042. Holy Spirit's not God, God the Father's

1043. not God, or like one another one would

1044. be Jesus isn't actually human. It's just

1045. more like a ghost kind of thing. You

  1046. know, I remember hearing a debate

1047. between um what I believe to be a

1048. genuine Christian and then a guy that

1049. called himself Christian but is more in

1050. the category of like liberal

1051. scholarship. And he said Jesus wasn't

1052. physically resurrected from the dead. He

1053. was only spiritually resurrected from

1054. the dead. And this guy says Paul says

1055. that makes our faith feudal if it didn't

1056. really happen. Right? And uh one of the

1057. points he used was from Luke where Jesus

1058. actually ate fish after his

  1059. resurrection. Right? A ghost doesn't eat

1060. fish. Uh, so there's a real body there.

1061. And remember, he let Thomas touch his

1062. nail scars, right? That there was a

1063. physical presence. So with physical

1064. resurrection. So um the declaring the

  1065. resurrection as a non-historical event

1066. would be another one. And there's so

1067. many. But again, I don't think that is

1068. particularly what the church is uh most

1069. sub susceptible right now. Um, but I

1070. want you to notice that people there

1071. there are whole groups of Christianity

  1072. or like what I call pseudo-Christian

1073. hybrids like uh mixtures of truth about

1074. Christianity, but ultimately the true

1075. gospel is not there. They don't say the

1076. Bible's bad. They say it's good, but

1077. then they say like there um there are

1078. groups that that like Jehovah's

1079. Witnesses claim they love the Bible, but

1080. they have their own version about it

1081. where every place that there's some kind

1082. of to claim to divinity of Christ,

  1083. Christ is

1084. sanitized, you know, uh they sanitize

1085. all those ones, not all of them. So

  1086. there's ones they haven't figured out

1087. yet, you can use um to call them to

1088. repentance. Uh, but I'm not going to

1089. spend much more time on Bible good but

1090. blatant heresy because again I think you

1091. guys are relatively well protected from

1092. that and it gets taught on a lot anyway.

1093. Three, Bible good but hypocritical

1094. legalism. Okay, so this one is most

1095. certainly found directly in the passage

1096. that we're in. So we're going to go back

1097. to Titus here and uh notice how I'm

1098. saying Titus, not Timothy. I think I

1099. worked out the bug. But um uh the

1100. circumcision party, another way to say

1101. that in more modern language would be

1102. hypocritical legalism. And I want to

1103. show you um verses about how the

1104. Pharisees who were part of the

1105. circumcision party. Um well, they became

1106. part of the circumcision party. They

1107. were just that they're basically the

1108. main villains of the whole gospel. Turns

1109. out some of them came to faith and we

1110. know that from Acts. Uh maybe Nicodemus

1111. was one of them, but several uh came to

1112. faith. Some of them seemed to have come

1113. of faith but kept continuing to preach

1114. that you have to keep the law to be

1115. righteous. And um this is how they

1116. treated Jesus. Luke uh 11 verse

1117. 38-42. The Pharisee was astonished to

1118. see that he did not first wash before

1119. dinner. Now some of you may be thinking,

1120. "Wow, gross. He didn't wash his hands."

1121. That's not really what this is about. Uh

1122. the um the Pharisees had developed um

1123. rituals really human traditions uh not

1124. things that were um direct commands that

1125. you always have to do or there's some

1126. kind of penalty or like you're a

1127. transgressor but uh a ritualistic

1128. washing of the hands and washing of the

1129. cups is what he didn't perform. He

1130. didn't do their tradition. And so

1131. they're like who is this man? And also

1132. remember these are the same people that

1133. will conspire against him to murder him.

1134. Right? So listen to what he says next

1135. with those things in mind. Verse 39 I

1136. think. And the Lord, that's Jesus, said

1137. to him, "Now you Pharisees, you cleanse

1138. the outside of the cup and of the dish,

1139. but inside you are full of greed and

1140. wickedness." Next verse. You fools, did

1141. not he who made the outside make the

1142. inside also? But give as alms those

1143. things that are within and behold

1144. everything is clean for you. Remember

1145. verse 15 to the pure all of Titus

    Titus 1 chapter mention

1146. chapter 1. To the pure all things are

1147. pure but the defiled and unbelieving

1148. nothing is pure but both their minds and

1149. their consciousnesses are defiled. Most

1150. likely Paul had in mind food laws but

1151. applies to more than just that. Um

1152. consider for example in those um ancient

1153. days uh a a chunk of like a roast or

1154. some kind of chunk of meat uh that came

1155. from a cow uh that was used in some kind

1156. of ritual sacrificed to a demon you know

1157. and you can see how some people in the

1158. church like well we shouldn't eat that

1159. and Paul's point is no the the evil is

1160. not in the meat you can take that and

1161. even if you know that's what it was used

1162. for and sold in the market because they

1163. would sell it afterwards uh you could

1164. eat that with thankfulness to the Lord

1165. Lord, but if your conscience tells you

1166. you can't eat that, then don't. Right?

1167. And he even says that the rule of love

1168. in this case is that we ought not to

1169. insist on our rights and like eat that

1170. meat in front of people which might

1171. cause them to stumble on their own

1172. conviction. But that's that that

1173. conviction also ought not to be allowed

1174. to call what we're doing as evil.

1175. Because again, sin comes from the

1176. deepest parts of our heart. And if God

1177. sees that we're eating that meat or any

1178. food with thankfulness towards him,

1179. that's the inner cleansing. But you

1180. think you can just avoid certain foods

1181. while having these deep sin issues in

1182. your heart and by just obeying these

1183. rules on the top, you're declared

1184. righteous? No, definitely not. Also, it

1185. binds people up with a burden where they

1186. have to do all these rules and follow

1187. all these rules and and their hearts

1188. aren't even necessarily close to God and

1189. they don't become any closer to God.

1190. There was one rule that the Pharisees

1191. came up with that we have in writing

1192. where on the Sabbath day, you cannot

1193. travel from your neighbor's house to

1194. have dinner with them while carrying a

1195. fig, but you could cut it in half and

  1196. carry it

1197. twice. Right? You laugh, but now think

1198. about the idea that they're stating

1199. you're only right with God if you follow

  1200. that kind of

1201. nonsense. Right? So it just upsets

1202. entire families. It ruins the freedom

1203. you have in Christ. you're going over to

1204. have a uh dinner party with friends you

1205. love and all you're thinking about is

1206. obeying the little rules. It doesn't

1207. mean that God's law is somehow just to

1208. be set in the trash if it doesn't

1209. matter. Its purpose is to point us to

1210. the utter sinfulness of sin, right? Not

1211. to point us to that it's sinful, to

1212. carry a full fig, but not to carry two.

1213. That's washing the outside superficial

1214. application of the law. And what Paul is

1215. saying by verse 16, though they profess

1216. to know God, they deny him by their

1217. works. They are detestable, disobedient,

1218. and unfit for good any good work. A

1219. legalist may seem very kind, very nice,

1220. all put together. Outside of the cup is

1221. clean, seems clean, it's got nice

1222. dishes, got a good life. Deep down

1223. though, if anybody thinks they're right

1224. with God by being good enough, the pride

1225. and the arrogance of that is what makes

1226. the Pharisees the main villains of the

1227. gospel. So, we need to take legalism

1228. extremely seriously. It shows up in

1229. different forms in in the Bible. I think

1230. overuse of alcohol is dangerous. It's

1231. like playing with a fire. I had a friend

1232. who lost his father to alcoholism and he

1233. decided never to drink. But he's not

1234. legalistic about it. He's not saying no

1235. Christian can drink. This would be an

1236. example of where Christians can get

1237. legalistic. And so, hey, how do we deal

1238. with the danger of alcohol? We told that

1239. no Christian can do it. If they do it,

  1240. it's a sin. That's not the Bible. The

1241. Bible says don't get drunk. I think also

1242. the Bible says like people in high

1243. positions, I know it does, ought not to

  1244. be drinking hard liquor. It's it's it's

1245. just it's too easy to get drunk on

1246. something that potent, right? Um so we

1247. don't really want like kings ought not

1248. to do that according to the Bible. Um

1249. and and so you got the more authority

1250. you have, the more you have to be safe

1251. with things that can really burn you. Um

1252. but to just go out and say that like

1253. anybody that's drinking um is is

1254. sinning. Well, that's not true. Some

1255. Christians actually have the freedom and

1256. they have not had alcoholism in their

1257. lives and and and they in do it in

1258. moderation. You know, it's just one

1259. example of the kind of legalism that

1260. post prohibition found its way into

1261. Baptist churches. And by the way, almost

1262. every church other than Lutherans,

  1263. Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and

1264. Anglicans, and then Catholicism, which

1265. isn't part of Protestantism. Almost

1266. every like community Bible church has

1267. Baptist roots. Our church used to be

1268. called Boonferryy Baptist Church. Now

1269. it's Boonferry Community Church. So, we

1270. have Baptist roots as well. So, it's not

1271. like Baptists or those who kind of have

1272. the spiritual legacy of of Baptist

1273. theology can't get legalistic. They can.

1274. And it's that dangerous, right? Any

1275. ounce of works introduced to the gospel

1276. means you'll never know if you've done

1277. enough. You will never know if you've

1278. done enough. You will never have that

1279. alleviation of guilt because you have to

1280. do something. And I've proven to myself

1281. I'll fail in trying to do enough to be

1282. right with God every single time. That's

1283. especially true when you're looking

1284. deeper. Right? Okay. So, next one. This

1285. is So, that one was Bible good but

1286. hypocritical legalism. I showed you an

1287. example of that uh in opposition to

  1288. Jesus. Four

1289. um Bible good but adding or removing.

1290. This is a little bit more difficult

1291. because in order to know that somebody

1292. has definitely added something that's

1293. not there or removed something that is

1294. there, you basically need to know the

1295. whole Bible and know what's there or you

1296. might not know what they're removing.

1297. If they remove a really famous verse

1298. like be kind to one another,

1299. tender-hearted, forgiving one another as

1300. God in Christ forgave you. Really

1301. powerful verse to memorize by the way.

1302. Uh that's Ephesians 4:32. And they say

    Ephesians 4:32

1303. we don't need to be kind to another. We

1304. don't need to be forgiving one another.

1305. Like there's so many verses about that,

1306. you'll know. But what about some of the

1307. more unread and unstudied uh um books of

1308. the Old Testament? How well do you guys

1309. feel like you have a handle on Ezekiel?

1310. I'd love to go through that book. uh

1311. sometime soon. Who knows what God will

1312. do. Maybe that'll be next. So, we

1313. haven't prayed about that at all. But

1314. Ezekiel is a wild book and has a lot to

1315. say. And if someone said, "Well, in this

1316. portion of Ezekiel talks about this and

1317. it's somewhat close to it, but they add

1318. one thing to it and you haven't really

1319. studied Ezekiel that well and you didn't

1320. have your Bible open. You might think

1321. just based on trusting this person

1322. because you seemed like a good teacher

  1323. teacher that that's that that's good.

1324. But what if they have really malicious

1325. intent in adding something? One way that

1326. some things will sometimes be added by

1327. false teachers is by taking from the

1328. context and and then uh taking that

1329. context and adding it as if it was

1330. authoritative to the Bible and then it

1331. twists what it's actually saying. Okay.

1332. Um so I don't know if you've seen people

1333. do that, but basically Paul says one

1334. thing and he says this is true for all

1335. the churches. And then the uh and and

1336. this is not necessarily always just a

1337. false teacher tactic. I think maybe you

1338. misunderstand the content and the

1339. context and you were misapplying it or

1340. something like that. So it's not an

1341. absolute sign. But a false teacher will

1342. take the context and see yeah back then

1343. it was this way but now it means the

1344. exact opposite of what Paul said because

1345. we have a different context you know. So

1346. unless the Bible says that that that the

1347. context has changed like between the

1348. covenants, that's not true. Especially

1349. when Paul is founding something in

1350. creation order, for example, that goes

1351. all the way back to Genesis. It's not

1352. something that you can just say, well,

1353. now we don't have to do that cuz our

1354. context has changed. And that's one

1355. tricky way that you can add to the

1356. Bible. Another thing is you can you can

1357. remove from the Bible. I've noticed that

1358. when I see people doing this that I

1359. perceive have malicious intent in their

1360. teaching. And I say perceive because

1361. it's not always clear. It's not always

  1362. clear. Um I'm I feel like I'm becoming

1363. more and more clear, but we see things

1364. through a glass dimly and eventually God

1365. seems to expose it. But before it's

1366. really exposed, um it's not always easy

1367. to see. And and this one is one of those

1368. categories. So, like I've noticed

1369. they'll often times remove something

1370. from the Old Testament, you know,

1371. because it seems that the modern-day

1372. American church knows less about the Old

1373. Testament. It gets preached less. Why is

1374. it that the Old Testament gets preached

  1375. so much less? I think it's cuz it's a

1376. lot of really uncomfortable uh

1377. controversial things in it. You know, uh

1378. things related to the judgment and

1379. condemnation and wrath of God. You will

1380. hear all the time, God is love, and he

1381. is. But if what's meant is that he's

1382. never angry and nothing makes him angry.

1383. Sometimes you're not even preaching the

1384. same God because there are definitely

1385. God is slow to anger. Abounding and

1386. steadfast love but there are things that

1387. make him angry and we have a a

1388. significant amount of stories and

1389. teaching in the Old Testament about the

1390. kinds of things that do and they find

1391. their way into the Bible too. Remember

1392. Jesus was angry and he cleared the whole

1393. temple with a whip because they had made

1394. it a place where they were robbing God.

1395. They were selling things rather than a

1396. house of than making the house of

1397. prayer. It angered Jesus who is God in

1398. person, God in the flesh. So we even

1399. talk about the wrath of God um is

1400. revealed uh against all those who

1401. suppress the truth in in in Romans 1. So

1402. you leave out the wrath of God. It why

1403. would someone do that? Now we're looking

  1404. at intent. Well, because that's a

1405. popular message. You can draw a lot of

1406. people to that. And if you're a pastor,

1407. and just about every pastor I know makes

1408. their income through the gifts and

1409. offerings of a church, and you can say a

1410. bunch of things that are really

1411. attractive, and people want to hear,

1412. there's almost nobody that wants to hear

1413. that God has justified outrage over

1414. unrepentant sin. That's his wrath.

1415. That's not a popular message with the

1416. world. In fact, Jesus says the world

1417. hates those kinds of things. and you'll

1418. get hate if you align yourself with

1419. those kinds of things. So if you're

1420. constantly leaving out God's wrath from

1421. the Old Testament and the church is in

1422. this age se relatively weak if I'm right

1423. about that regarding the Old Testament.

1424. That's one of those places where you can

1425. just remove something by just never

1426. saying it, you know. And also it's very

1427. hard to charge someone with that with

1428. any intent there because just because

  1429. they haven't said it recently doesn't

1430. mean they can't come back and say,

1431. "Well, I never said the wrath of God

1432. doesn't exist." You know, so again, hard

1433. to see, but let me read to you how stern

1434. the Bible is. How stern God is about

1435. adding and removing. Proverbs 30 uh

1436. 5-6. Every word of God proves true. He

1437. is a shield to those who take refuge in

1438. him. Do not add to his words, lest he

1439. rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

  1440. Also Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 4:2

1441. 4:2, you shall not add to the word that

1442. I commanded you, nor take from it, that

1443. you may keep the commandment of the Lord

1444. your God that I commanded you. So there

1445. are very clear commands uh to one reason

1446. uh that the elders and I and I think

1447. just about everyone at BootsFair that's

1448. in leadership and probably most of

1449. everyone that attends um preach through

1450. books of the Bible and and continue to

1451. preach through new books of the Bible

1452. that we haven't gone through is that we

1453. want to preach the whole council of

1454. God's word. Paul talks about that in

1455. Acts that that's one of the ways that

1456. they could know he was a faithful

1457. apostle because he declared to them the

1458. whole council of God's word and left

1459. nothing out. Uh so and I I I'm not

1460. trying to say that topical sermons are

1461. already bad always bad or a topical

1462. series is always bad but it can lead to

1463. the liability of avoiding things that

  1464. are controversial and I I don't think we

1465. ought to. There are controversial things

1466. like today in Titus and we just keep

1467. going right through them. And when you

1468. go through with a white heart, with a

  1469. right heart, I think it's actually

1470. deeply attractive to those that God is

1471. drawing to the church, drawing to the

1472. faith, and drawing to deeper change in

1473. their life, sanctification. So, that's

  1474. enough with

1475. that. We're going to go to Bible good,

1476. but twisted immorality. This one, I

1477. think, is um difficult to know because

1478. you don't see the twisted immorality

1479. very quickly. Let's go to second Peter

    2 Peter 2:2

1480. 2:2. Um and it says as and many will

1481. follow their sensuality and because of

1482. them the way of truth will be

1483. blasphemed. That word sensuality um the

1484. way the ESV translates it might not

1485. immediately help you see how uh like how

1486. deep that is issue is. Uh it's it's like

1487. want and lustfulness. There's sexual sin

1488. in that sensuality. Okay. So I'll give

1489. you an example. And by the way, the

1490. Bible calls out false teachers by name.

1491. And when I'm absolutely certain that one

1492. of them is, I will do it too. And you've

1493. heard this name before and this was

1494. already dealt with in the church a long

1495. time ago. But um initially Rob Bell

1496. seemed to be an upand cominging

1497. brilliantly gifted teacher and coming at

1498. passages in a way that helped people

1499. really understand what they meant and

1500. very very popular. And then uh he left

1501. his church and he started questioning

1502. whether everyone is saved and became

1503. somewhat of a universalist. And even

1504. that didn't seem to uh make everyone

1505. realize that uh that he was a false

1506. teacher. At that time I did because

1507. telling everyone they'll be saved

1508. whether they believe in Jesus or not is

1509. is absolutely false biblically. And it

1510. it it basically drops the warning of

1511. condemnation. and and anybody that drops

1512. a true warning from God about the

1513. reality of condemnation has bad intent.

1514. But then only about a couple years

1515. later, he came out and he said that the

1516. church is just hopelessly stuck in the

1517. past morally. And he said, "We need to

1518. catch up morally." And what he

1519. ultimately said is that one of the ways

1520. that we need to catch up is we need to

1521. recognize that homosexuality is not a

1522. sin. We need to finally catch up with

1523. the time. Okay. So in this case, the the

1524. Peter passage talks about secretly

  1525. introducing destructive heresies, but

1526. you will know them by their sensuality.

1527. You might not know, they're kind of

1528. under the cover for a while about the

1529. wrong thing they're taught, but

  1530. eventually they'll say something

1531. absolutely false about um sexual purity

1532. kinds of things. And it's so clear in

1533. scripture that God intends uh uh it only

1534. to between a lifelong relationship to

1535. one man and one woman. and that that

1536. brings life and that that's how we're to

1537. multiply on the earth and that

1538. ultimately what he's seeking is godly

1539. offspring. So remember um when you see

1540. somebody blatantly contradict things as

1541. deep as sexual morality, imagine what it

1542. would take for you to break that

1543. boundary. I think that boundary is a

1544. false teacher boundary according to

1545. Peter. Next one, Bible good but leave

1546. out truth. And this one is so bound up

1547. with the seventh one as well. Uh this

1548. one is similar to uh removing something

1549. or adding something. Although removing

  1550. is more actively you're like you're

1551. saying that shouldn't be in the Bible or

1552. I'm going to add this to the Bible. And

1553. scholars do that. Scholars are like I

1554. don't think this thing that Jesus said

1555. is historical and then they just remove

1556. it. Uh the Jesus seminar did that. Uh

1557. they call it the dethologization of the

1558. gospel. Like we're just going to take

1559. all the myths out of here, you know, and

  1560. anything that's supernatural is a myth.

1561. Uh so we're just going to remove all

1562. that. Um, that would be removing but

1563. leaving out truth. We've talked about it

  1564. a little bit already. Let's go to 2

    2 Corinthians 4:2

1565. Corinthians 4:2. Moreover, it is

1566. required of stewards that they be found

1567. faithful. Is this the one? Second 2

    2 Corinthians 4:2

  1568. Corinthians

  1569. 4:2. Yeah, I might I might have given

1570. you guys the wrong one. I'm going to

1571. look it up in my Bible really quick. I

1572. thought I multiply double checked these

  1573. ones, but

1574. um 2 Corinthians 4:2 says, "But we have

    2 Corinthians 4:2

  1575. renounced disgraceful underhanded ways.

1576. We refuse to practice cunning or tamper

1577. with God's word, but by the open

1578. statement of the truth, we would commend

1579. ourselves to everyone's conscience in

1580. the sight of God of of God. Again, I

1581. don't intend to mention churches here,

1582. but I know that many of you either have

1583. friends or this happened to you that

1584. during COVID, the crisis or perceived

1585. intensity of the crisis uh required

1586. pastors to make certain decisions and

1587. then the people in that church had heard

1588. them preach for many years and and

1589. thought they would never make that kind

1590. of decision like closing the church for

1591. an entire year. Uh and and and then you

1592. know what the elders and I realized is

1593. like well it's really good to keep

1594. hospitals open and we don't want

1595. hospitals overrun. So that's important.

1596. But the church is the hospital of the

1597. soul and your eternal life matters more

1598. than just your physical body. Your

1599. physical body matters. It does. Can't

1600. love someone and say be warm and not

1601. give them a blanket. That's not real

1602. love. But the reality is that just

1603. closing the church for that long, a lot

1604. of Christians realize I don't want to be

1605. in the kind of church that just closes

1606. for a year like that. Um, am I

1607. necessarily saying that closing your

1608. church for a year is false teaching? No.

  1609. I I don't necessarily know that that's

1610. the case. Um, but I consider it to be in

1611. in some ways leaving out truth because

1612. Zoom preaching is not the same as being

1613. in person. Zoom didn't exist when the

1614. Bible commanded um through the author of

1615. Hebrews that we ought not to forsake the

1616. gathering. And then there were other

1617. things that came in too. Um I think that

1618. essentially critical race theory is is

1619. hypocritical legalism because you can

1620. never do enough and it's all about doing

1621. justice when really the justice is

1622. already done in the cross. And a pastor

1623. should know that really really deeply.

1624. It doesn't mean that we don't work

1625. justly, but to say that um that systems

1626. themselves are racist. Uh who's supposed

1627. to repent? The system individuals are.

1628. And to say that everybody is, it's one

1629. of the first things that God really

1630. hammered in me when I recommitted in my

1631. faith. I just immediately remembered

1632. everybody is created in the image of

1633. God, you you know, and I played with uh

1634. a lot of uh black football players,

1635. Tongans and Samoans, and there was a lot

1636. of racism back and forth uh between all

1637. those groups. And I I just realized like

1638. I need to repent of the contempt that

1639. I've had uh for people groups based on

1640. negative experience with with some of

1641. them. And they had negative experiences

1642. with me too, right? And and God just

1643. immediately gave me a love. Did you know

1644. every single human being is eternal?

1645. whether they're saved or not. You don't

1646. just disappear and stop existing. God

1647. has given us eternal souls. So, we

1648. matter and and it does not matter.

1649. There's now neither Jew nor Greek or

1650. barbarian or skithing or male or female.

1651. We're we have become something so

1652. importantly more important than our

1653. ethnicity in Christ that it unifies us

1654. and not not to be the primary category

1655. that we differentiate ourselves on. So,

1656. people were really upset about that kind

1657. of thing. And I think it it leaves out

1658. the truth that the only way to

1659. accomplish any justice is by first

1660. accepting the cross. All right, last one

1661. and then we're done. This is the hardest

1662. one. I'm even going to be showing you um

1663. uh three videos about it. And this is

1664. Bible good but verbal slide of hand. And

1665. you probably already know this is about

1666. Tim Mackey. He is the um Bible project

1667. teacher. And it is a crying shame that

1668. he does this because I think uh the

1669. project itself of of giving summaries of

1670. Bible books and teachings like that um

1671. is something that uh is is powerful but

1672. not when led by a man like this. And I

1673. want to show you this is blatant lying.

1674. You're going to see I can prove that he

1675. knows that he's lying about hell and

1676. about its reality. So the um let's let's

1677. show you the first video, but I want you

1678. to stop it for a second just at the

1679. screenshot. Can you guys uh so um now

1680. the opening line of the whole Bible is

1681. if you look at the first that's the

1682. video there. Okay. Does it stop? Now the

1683. opening line if you look at the first

1684. sentence of the Bible it says in the

1685. beginning you've probably seen it enough

1686. heaven and earth. Okay. And and you can

1687. watch this just look up to Mackie

1688. teaching on hell and you'll see that

1689. whiteboard and and stuff and it's on

1690. different channels and stuff and this

1691. one has millions of views on this

1692. particular channel. And um what he's

1693. talking about is whether the traditional

1694. view of of heaven and and earth and hell

1695. is actually true biblically. And so what

1696. he's saying here in in a sense is true

1697. in Christ. The kingdom of heaven has

1698. come near and there's a sense of

1699. overlap. There's not a full overlap. The

1700. the kingdom of heaven is not yet fully

1701. um come to full fruition. Not everything

1702. is yet submitted to Christ. And that

1703. will happen in the future after a second

1704. coming. But there is some overlap. So

1705. what he's put in your mind is that we're

1706. talking about heaven where God dwells

1707. with his angels and earth. And someday

1708. there will be a new heavens and a new

1709. earth. Okay? Now I want just I want you

1710. to see the the the problem with that

1711. already. The new heavens and the new

1712. earth is not talking that that phrase is

1713. about a new sky, a new outer space area

1714. and a new earth. Right? But also in the

1715. concept of new heavens and the new

1716. earth, God will come to dwell and his

1717. dwelling place will be with men. So the

1718. heaven above will come down and be on

1719. the new heavens and the new earth. Okay.

1720. So when we say heavens, sky and outer

1721. space is what's meant. I guess sometimes

1722. speaking of the heavens where the Lord

1723. is enthroned in glory, that would be

1724. where he is. But in the context, it's

1725. clear. But what he's implanted in your

1726. mind is that we're talking about heaven

1727. and earth. Now listen to what he says

1728. about Genesis. You would not think that

1729. you could make a false teaching out of

1730. Genesis 1, but he accomplishes it. So

  1731. let's go.

1732. What does it not say? Can we turn it up?

1733. You look at the first sentence of the

1734. Bible. It says, "In the beginning, God

  1735. made heavens

1736. and what does it not say?" It doesn't

1737. say in the beginning God made heaven and

  1738. earth and

1739. hell. God didn't make whatever hell is.

  1740. God didn't make

1741. it. It's nowhere to be found on page one

1742. of your Bible. Right? What God made is

1743. heaven and earth. And what does God

  1744. think about it?

1745. Very good. Okay. Stop right there. This

1746. is the verbal slight of hand. people,

1747. hundreds of thousands of comments on

1748. this video are like, "I've never seen it

1749. that way. How did I never see that?"

1750. Because nobody in their right mind, and

1751. they'd be laughed out of the room in

1752. biblical scholarship to claim that what

1753. God is talking about in the beginning,

1754. he created the heavens and the earth was

1755. that he was creating heaven above where

1756. God exists and the earth below. In fact,

1757. everything that follows is just about

1758. the sky, the outer space area with the

1759. moon, the stars, and the sun. And the

1760. sun and the moon are talked about as

1761. lights for the night and lights for the

1762. day and then everything on earth and all

1763. the different areas of the earth and

1764. populating that with vegetation and with

1765. animals. So, but but if you're thinking,

1766. oh, the beginning of the Bible says God

1767. created the heaven where God dwells and

1768. the earth, and you think, well, then

1769. that's really kind of weird that he left

1770. out hell. That's still just an argument

1771. from silence, right? Let's go to Matthew

    Matthew 25:41

1772. 25:41. This is what Jesus

  1773. said. I'll I'll I'll go there because it

1774. probably hard for them to switch back

1775. and forth between the videos and this,

1776. but Matthew there. Then he will say to

1777. those on his left, "Depart from me, you

1778. cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared

1779. for the devil and his angels." Prepared

  1780. and made uh ready. It's it's it's all

1781. the same thing. Also go to chapter 1

1782. verse one of John. Um and and actually

1783. verse one through three. We've been

1784. doing I told you I'll do a little pop

1785. out section of the uh uh word like fire.

1786. Um we just got done reading most of John

1787. uh already. And it says in the beginning

1788. was the word and the word was with God

1789. and the word was God. He was in the

1790. beginning with God. Next verse all

1791. things were made through him and without

1792. him was not anything made that was made.

1793. I told Isaiah, "What would you say if

1794. someone say God didn't create hell?" And

1795. he just laughed. I was like, "That's

1796. stupid. He created all things and hell

1797. exists, you know." So, of course, God

1798. created it. But a verbal slight of hand.

1799. He's making you think of heaven and of

1800. earth and then leaving out hell is

1801. weirdly conspicuous. But Genesis 1 is

1802. not about the creation of heaven and the

1803. angels. It's about creation of all the

1804. things of created order, physical things

1805. you can see. Right? So, but if you're

1806. thinking I'm giving him an unfavorable

1807. reading um and that this isn't fair and

1808. I'm probably taking him out of context,

1809. just listen to the next video of what he

1810. says. This is even more contradictory in

1811. a blatant way about scripture says about

1812. hell. So, let's do the next video. Check

1813. it out. The opening line of the whole

1814. Bible is there. This this needs to come

1815. last. It's the it's the next video.

1816. Sorry, guys. But the Bible project says

1817. hell and that word and what that refers

1818. to is not some place other than heaven

1819. and earth. It's a place where people are

1820. sustained by God's mercy and care, but

1821. God allows them the dignity of not being

1822. in a relationship with him if they don't

1823. want. Stop right there. He just said

1824. hell is a place where God sustains

1825. people with his mercy and care. Okay.

1826. What the gospel says is that Jesus died.

1827. He became the curse of the law. The

1828. curse of the law is that when you don't

1829. keep the law, you're cursed and you to

1830. be hung on a tree. He was cursed for our

1831. sake. All of our debt in the law written

1832. on the uh uh basically on the cross and

1833. he drags all of its demands and

1834. accusations against us with him into the

1835. grave and they're dead and gone and we

1836. are no longer guilty and it saves us

1837. from eternity in condemnation. Right?

1838. Eternity and condemnation or it saves us

1839. from God's mercy and care in hell. So

1840. what Jesus died is to save you from

1841. God's mercy and care. sustaining mercy

1842. and care. This is such blatant false

1843. teaching and it's such a lie. And let me

1844. show you why you can know it's a lie.

  1845. Next

1846. video. Okay, let's check it out. Now,

1847. the opening line of the whole Bible is

1848. in the beginning God created the skies

1849. and the land. Now, your Bible

1850. translation might say the heavens and

1851. the earth. In biblical Hebrew, the word

1852. for heaven refers simply to the sky

1853. above. And the word for earth does not

1854. mean globe, but rather the land.

1855. blow us. He knows the heavens doesn't

1856. mean the heaven above. He knows that.

1857. This is just another teaching of his on

1858. the biblepro.com. So he knows exactly

1859. the verbal slide of handies. And

1860. planting the idea of heaven where God

1861. dwells. What did God create? The heavens

1862. and the earth. And you're thinking, "Oh

1863. yeah, he created heaven there and earth

1864. there." This would be the exact right

1865. time to say that he also created hell.

1866. Which, by the way, even without verbal

1867. sight of hand, you should never believe

1868. anybody that says God did not create

1869. hell. if it exists, he created it. He

1870. even prepared it for the devil and his

1871. angels. So, let me read you instead of

1872. the nonsense false teaching that

1873. obviously he's pedling for gain because

1874. there's so much money involved with the

1875. Bible project. Um, and it honestly

1876. breaks my heart that that something that

1877. could have been as valuable as the Bible

1878. project has somebody like that leading

1879. it and starting it in the first place.

1880. But let me tell you, nobody likes this

1881. message. This is not what you get like

1882. paid for except by faithful Christians

1883. to say. Revelation 14:10-11 and then

    Revelation 14:10–11

  1884. we're

1885. done. Do you guys have it up?

1886. And another angel, a third, following

1887. them, said saying with a loud voice, "If

1888. anyone worships the beast and its image,

1889. and receives a mark on his forehead or

1890. on his hand, he will also drink the wine

1891. of God's wrath poured full strength into

1892. the cup of his anger, and he will be

1893. tormented with fire and sulfur in the

1894. presence of his holy angels and in the

  1895. presence of the Lamb."

1896. That's the truth about the danger of

1897. rejecting God and worshiping Satan.

1898. That's the danger of anything other than

1899. full repentance and acceptance of the

1900. gospel that we're not good. That God

1901. sees that we're not good, but that he's

1902. merciful and that he loves us so much

1903. that he gave his one and only son to die

1904. on the cross for us. And even even for

  1905. Timi, there's hope. I'm going to

1906. conclude with reading second Timothy

  1907. here.

1908. And this is what it says. And the Lord's

1909. servant must not be quarrelome, but kind

1910. to everyone, able to teach, patiently

1911. enduring evil, correcting his opponents

1912. with gentleness. God may perhaps grant

1913. them repentance leading to the knowledge

1914. of the truth. And there's one more

1915. verse. And they may come to their senses

1916. and escape the snare of the devil after

1917. being captured by him to do his will.

  1918. That's what I want for Tim

1919. Mackey. for someone that is lying so

1920. blatantly where there can be nothing but

1921. evil intent when you're telling people

1922. hell is a good place, a place where you

1923. can be apart from God, but he'll be kind

  1924. to you

1925. anyway. I It's hard to imagine something

1926. more evil and destructive of the gospel

1927. in that way. Um, but I do not want him

1928. to spend eternity in hell either. I want

1929. him to repent. And man, if he did, we

1930. would get probably one of the more

1931. gifted preachers of our generation. So

1932. you can pray for him with

1933. me. So we need to have the put the main

  1934. point up one more

1935. time. Even as we come to communion, if

1936. there is anything that we should do like

1937. memorize those seven points about false

1938. teachers, no, study the word, read it,

1939. believe it in in in a straightforward

1940. way. Don't get all twisted up. The

1941. purpose of rebuking false teachers is to

1942. protect the church and call to for

1943. repentance and sound faith. If there's

1944. ways that you've been deceived, if

  1945. there's ways that things that you've

  1946. believed that you're realizing they're

1947. not right, you can just bring them to

1948. the table and say, "God, forgive me for

1949. believing a false thing about you, for

1950. doubting you, you can come to the foot

1951. of the cross, and that is the most safe

1952. place you will ever be from any kind of

1953. false teaching." Heavenly Father, thank

1954. you for this message. Thank you that you

1955. have um brought us through these

1956. controversial topics over and over and

1957. over again in a truthful way. I pray

1958. that people would be duly warned and

1959. that they would be concerned about uh

1960. their friends listening to uh teaching

1961. like this. It is it is so twisted and

1962. and hard and difficult to figure it out

1963. and there's a slight of hands and uh

1964. Lord I just pray that that would not

1965. continue to be the ministry of men like

1966. Rob Bell and Tacki and that they would

1967. repent and that they would come to a

1968. place where their faith is sound and I

1969. pray that very same thing as a

1970. protective prayer over the church in

  1971. Jesus name. Amen.
