  1. Welcome back or to the grace church members podcast, I'm your

  2. host Chris rivers and am excited to be joining you today when you

  3. think of Pentecost, what is the first thing that comes to your

  4. mind? Do you understand?

  5. Its meaning Old Testament beginnings and what happened on

  6. Pentecost? Well, in this episode with Jim

  7. Taylor and Brian Darnell, we talk about the implications of

  8. spirit and dwelling Believers. We have a great conversation

  9. about what members can look forward to about May.

  10. Eight Pentecost services and how we can think about this

  11. important discipleship moment, Okay, let's listen in on this

  12. discussion. Alright, great to see you guys

  13. today. Good to be here.

  14. Well guys, just to catch us up to speed.

  15. Brian reached out to me last week to see if we could do an

  16. impromptu espisode to share with our members to help us prepare

  17. for a special Pentecost teaching that we have planned on May 28

  18. this coming weekend. So we actually had an episode

  19. planned and that we were going to post.

  20. But Brian, you felt. It was important for us to maybe

  21. pause that and do this episode. So Brian why don't you tell us

  22. what you were thinking? Yeah thanks Chris.

  23. For letting me kind of interrupt your plan.

  24. But I just was thinking about Pentecost coming up and this

  25. will be our second year, taking a real swing at Pentecost and

  26. emphasizing it in a new way as a church.

  27. And I was just thinking, personally, I'm a worship

  28. leader, get to lead worship every week.

  29. I think about our services, our content, what we do on the

  30. weekends. And I was like, what would it

  31. look like for us to have a conversation and get a little

  32. bit of the behind the scenes of, why should this be important to

  33. us as a body as a church? And so I asked Jim Taylor to

  34. come and bring His wisdom, bring all of his knowledge and

  35. everything that he does with our teaching team.

  36. And just give us a little context on what is Pentecost.

  37. Anyways, yeah, the word Pentecost means 50th, which is

  38. kind of weird name for a holiday, right?

  39. But that comes from reference to this Feast, that was celebrated

  40. in Israel and this feasts happened. 50 days after Passover

  41. or seven weeks after the Sabbath after the Passover.

  42. So, it was called the Feast of Weeks it was a one-day Harvest

  43. Festival and probably be worth reading, Leviticus 23, 15 and 16

  44. just because it describes it. So it says in Leviticus 23 from

  45. the day. After the Sabbath day, you bring

  46. the bundle of grain to be lifted up.

  47. As a special offering count off seven full weeks, keep counting

  48. until the day after the seventh Sabbath. 50 days later, then

  49. present, an offering of new grain to the Lord.

  50. So yeah, this Festival where they're growing.

  51. Grain. And this is kind of the, the

  52. firstfruits, right? When it starts to produce, then

  53. you celebrate that, right? God is taking care of us.

  54. I mean, you got to, you got to put yourself back into the

  55. mindset of what would it be like to live in an agrarian society?

  56. Where if God doesn't send rain and your crops, don't grow you

  57. starve, right? So this is, this is worth

  58. celebrating and really, that's, that's the origins of Pentecost,

  59. 50 days after Passover, we're going to celebrate New grain.

  60. Now that's that context is fascinating is probably not the

  61. text that we're all familiar with.

  62. Probably not those festivals. You know you're not reading

  63. Leviticus all the time. You know I did in college.

  64. No this is why this is helpful so tell us a little bit.

  65. So what happened with the apostles?

  66. Obviously we can read it in Acts but give us a little context.

  67. Yeah so when you read about Pentecost in Acts chapter 2, I

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  68. mean there's there's a few things that have taken place,

  69. right? One of the And I mean takes

  70. takes us a little bit of work to kind of get back to what they

  71. were feeling. But Jesus had come, you know, he

  72. had, he had died, he'd been resurrected and then he ascends

  73. to heaven. So he hangs around for a little

  74. while and then all of a sudden they're looking around and he

  75. has raised up into a cloud and there's a couple Angels there.

  76. It says, hey don't freak out. He's going to come back someday

  77. the same way, you saw him go, but then imagine what it would

  78. be like to be in their world, where Are, you know, you asked

  79. the question? Where does God live, right?

  80. I'm and and the answer is, well, he lived originally in Eden but

  81. then that was lost. And, you know, Adam and Eve were

  82. exiled and then he lived in the Tabernacle, you know, between

  83. the Ark of the Covenant. That's where his visible

  84. presence. Dwelled.

  85. And then Tabernacle kind of gets rolled into the temple.

  86. That Solomon built will then when the temples destroyed and

  87. their exiled to Babylon, then they come back and rebuild it.

  88. But everybody's real sad, you know, and God got a silent.

  89. There's like 400 years of Silence where he's not speaking,

  90. nobody's prophesying Jesus comes on the scene and Jesus is like,

  91. I'm the temple. I mean, we just studied that in

  92. John Chapter 2, not too long ago.

    John 2 chapter mention

  93. And so, then everybody kind of these disciples.

  94. They see him as the Messiah, they rally around him.

  95. He's crucified resurrected and then a sins.

  96. And now, what would you be thinking?

  97. I guess we just pray and wait, you know, he promised that his

  98. Spirit would come but that's what they're doing.

  99. That's what you see happening and the beginning of the book of

  100. Acts as they're just, you got about 120 people who are

  101. gathered together and they're just waiting and praying and

  102. that's kind of the set up for Pentecost, right?

  103. Like God, we don't know where God is, what's he doing?

  104. We're just kind of waiting and so that's that's kind of What

  105. was going on at the time when the spirit actually arrives?

  106. Yeah, that's great. You were talking me through some

  107. of that earlier, and I was trying to put myself in the

  108. shoes of an Old Testament follower without the spirit.

  109. What it would have looked like today Lee attempt to walk in

  110. obedience without that kind of access to the spirit.

  111. Yeah, yeah. And it's just hard to get your

  112. mind around what it would look like.

  113. We're so used to it, such a comfortable thing for us to know

  114. we have a comforter right an advocate with us an access to

  115. him. Yeah.

  116. It's fascinating. So could you maybe like bet.

  117. We see the gospels, the gospels end.

  118. Jesus is gone. And so, then the church is born.

  119. We see work is happening. And then, could you like bring

  120. us up, like, what happened at Pentecost?

  121. Sure. Yeah.

  122. Yeah. Let me, let me start by kind of

  123. going back into the Old Testament, a little time, right?

  124. I think that'll give us a good. A good sense of the significance

  125. of what we see happening on that day.

  126. Yeah, so if you go back, Back, you know, all the way back to

  127. Genesis 15 when God Appears to Abram.

  128. And he makes a covenant with Abram when God Appears to him.

  129. It says that that he appeared like a smoking cauldron or

  130. flaming torch. I that's what passes through

  131. these animals that have been severed.

  132. When God makes this promise to Abraham and God is basically

  133. saying, hey, if I don't keep my Covenant, then maybe what

  134. happened to these animals happened to me and ironically,

  135. it does happen to him. I mean, Jesus killed.

  136. Was killed to keep that promise and but but the appearance of

  137. God that flaming torch you know is an important image because

  138. when you get to Moses you know the Israelites are enslaved.

  139. God raises up Moses and calls him to go deliver the Israelites

  140. from Egypt. And remember how God first

  141. appears to him and a burning bush, like a flaming Bush but it

  142. isn't burned up. It isn't consumed.

  143. And then when God leads the Israelites out of Egypt, when he

  144. leads them through the Wilderness at night, he appears

  145. to them like a pillar of fire. So you have all these images of

  146. fire, burning glowing light and those are carried into the New

  147. Testament, as well. When is worth mentioning at

  148. Mount Sinai, when God gives them the law.

  149. I mean the mountain is shaking smoking and then they're at the

  150. Pinnacle. There's the swirling fire at the

  151. top, that symbolizes God's presence.

  152. So fire is associated with his presence, right?

  153. And even in the New Testament, I mean, John describes Jesus in

  154. Revelation having eyes like a flame, a fire.

  155. There's just there's other places in the scriptures to

  156. Ezekiel 1 and, and all these different spots, but that's

  157. important. Because when you get to

  158. Pentecost what happens is, you have the sound like a rushing

  159. wind and wind breath Spirits, all the same word in Greek.

  160. I so the spirit comes and the 120 disciples are gathered

  161. together praying, and then you see fire the scent, but then It

  162. doesn't just descend says, it's divided.

  163. It's divided. And little little flames of

  164. fire, rest on each of them, right?

  165. And then there's this thing happening with tongues and

  166. people hearing what God has done in their own languages because

  167. you got all these people gathered together for nation

  168. different nations, right? But that image of fire, what

  169. does that symbolize? That symbolizes God's presence.

  170. And so so just contrast that to what an Israelite would have

  171. been used to. Like if you wanted to worship

  172. God, you had to go to where God lift.

  173. That's right. And where did God live?

  174. He lived in Jerusalem, we're in Jerusalem and the temple in the

  175. holy of holies, right? But what happened when Jesus was

  176. crucified is that veil in the temple was torn in two.

  177. And so the most holy place, you know, that was supposed to house

  178. the Ark of the Covenant where God's presence to, well, the

  179. Shekinah Glory between the cherubim like that's ripped

  180. open. So it's symbolizing.

  181. Hey there. Barrier anymore, right?

  182. And eventually that Temple is going to be destroyed in 70 AD

  183. and Jesus you know clearly says I'm the new Temple, ya got God

  184. lives in me, you know, and so there's this transition that's

  185. happening. So when you get to Pentecost now

  186. this visible fiery presence of God.

  187. What's significant is? It's not just in one location.

  188. What happens? It gets divided among all of

  189. these people And so then they're speaking to all the nations,

  190. it's a it's a huge reversal of what has happened in the Old

  191. Testament instead of all the nations having to come to

  192. Jerusalem to get to God. Now what happens, God comes and

  193. he's being dispersed to all the nations and there's direct

  194. access there's no barrier. I mean it is it is an incredibly

  195. significant event and the New Testament you know, will

  196. reiterate this idea over and over that It's not just, we had

  197. this Temple, where God lived, then Jesus became the temple.

  198. Then Jesus ascends, and he sends his spirit.

  199. And what's the new Temple? It's us as Believers like, God

  200. lives inside of me, not just in me individually, but in every

  201. believer, and not, just in every believer individually, but even

  202. in Believers corporately. So Paul picks up on this idea in

  203. 1st Corinthians 3, and First Corinthians 6, he says, don't

  204. you know that? You plural are the temple of God

  205. is a very interesting language. Mean, he's speaking plural and

  206. all these context and he's saying, you corporately are the

  207. temple of God and God, dwells in you, it's plural also.

  208. So, you know, there's a sense where God inhabits me not just

  209. as an individual, but when I gather with his people, he

  210. corporately indwells us as a body.

  211. So, all that mean that's very Nificant language.

  212. And those are, those are Big Ideas, right?

  213. And if you were living at this time, you were one of these

  214. people that's revolutionary like, oh my gosh, is that me?

  215. Yeah, it's not just there, and it's not just in this person.

  216. But like, in me on me in me and that's that's a different deal.

  217. We need a minute to just let that sit on a lot of

  218. information, but it's also really helpful context.

  219. So I'm curious just to go back to the beginning.

  220. Jim, so we said this idea of Pentecost means 50.

  221. So, what is what do you think? The significance?

  222. Is that 50 days later the spirit comes on Pentecost?

  223. Yeah, I don't know. Here's what, here's what I

  224. think. So you've got that, you know,

  225. the Feast of Weeks. Was 50 days.

  226. So, I mean, that was, that was set.

  227. It's almost to me, like God hijacks his own feast and adds a

  228. new meaning to it, right? So, if you go back, and you

  229. think, okay? 50 days later, the first heads

  230. of grain are coming in, right? Okay.

  231. God has got his cared for us. It's bearing fruit.

  232. The Harvest is happening. Well, that, that in itself is

  233. worth celebrating, but I think the significance of the spirit

  234. coming on Pentecost. It's Almost to me like that is

  235. the fruit or the Harvest of Jesus work.

  236. So Jesus came lived, a perfect life died in our place so that

  237. when I put my faith in him there's a couple things that

  238. happen right? My sinfulness got imputed to

  239. him. So he was actually judged

  240. crucified was separated from his father from God the father

  241. because of that sin but that's not the only thing that happens.

  242. His righteousness. Gets imputed to me.

  243. So both of those things happen through faith, right?

  244. And if you think about this idea that where does God live, where

  245. does God dwell? Well wherever he lives has to be

  246. a holy place. It can't like, he doesn't just

  247. listen, you know, I mean this is the significance of reading the

  248. Old Testament, you know, when he talks an exodus he's like, hey

  249. have commands, Moses have my people, build me a sanctuary, a

  250. holy place a tabernacle, so that I can live among them.

  251. And all of these things that have to be crafted and created

  252. or overlaid with gold and their, holy their set apart.

  253. No one goes in there. No one goes in the holy of

  254. holies except the high priest, once a year to make atonement

  255. for his own sin and for the unintentional sins of the

  256. people, it's a very holy place like you just walk in, you don't

  257. want back out right? I mean, you got a story of the

  258. guy reaching out to touch the Ark of the Covenant to try to

  259. keep it steady and just Falls over dead.

  260. So wherever God, Dwells like that's a holy space, Sacred

  261. Space. I he doesn't live in an unclean

  262. space. So how in the world can God

  263. inhabit? A sinful person.

  264. How can that happen? Well, that only happens through

  265. the work of Jesus. And so if Jesus Takes your

  266. uncleanness, he takes your unrighteousness and he imputes

  267. his righteousness to you through faith.

  268. Well then there can be a harvest right there can be a result,

  269. there can be a fruit of his labor.

  270. I mean that's work. So so now on this Festival of

  271. harvest, you know, where you're celebrating man.

  272. Look at what God has done. He's taking care of us and now

  273. there's This bounty. There's this you know, this

  274. heart. Well it's almost like you have

  275. the Harvest of Jesus work coming to fruition by the spirit coming

  276. and living inside of Believers. You know?

  277. Now, I don't, if there's not a verse that says that right, but

  278. I just think that, that is a very ironic thing that that

  279. happens, that that happens to line up.

  280. It's very, very interesting. And just seems like listen to

  281. you talk the applications for us as Believers to bring it all the

  282. way to Greenville South Carolina.

  283. China May 2023, right? So, the application for me, as a

  284. follower of Jesus, with this idea that now God dwells within

  285. me. Yeah, my sin has been taken by

  286. the death of Jesus, so that idea.

  287. And then the idea of what is, what does that mean for us as a

  288. church body and how we interact and how we fellowship and serve

  289. and love one another and worship.

  290. That's right. And so we're speaking together.

  291. So this just feels right with applications for us.

  292. And so it's where I'd love for us to get to As a body is to

  293. think about, okay? Pentecost is not just another

  294. day on the calendar that comes and goes every year, right?

  295. It's it feels like a very important moment for us to

  296. pause. Reflect, remember on what does

  297. all this mean, you know? So, when I think about for me,

  298. as a Believer, what based on that context of what happened,

  299. what should I be thinking about? What should I be preparing

  300. myself for this weekend? We're is I'm preparing for

  301. worship and bring them. My family, we have a reading

  302. plan that is going to help. Give us some guidance as we're

  303. leading into Sunday. But for me, personally, in my

  304. prayer, life in my walk with God, what should I be thinking

  305. about this week? Yeah, I mean it's worth

  306. celebrating because, you know, just think about what it would

  307. be like to. We don't have any concept of

  308. what it would be like to try to follow God without the Holy

  309. Spirit living inside of us. But I mean that's been the

  310. majority of History, right? I mean, every I mean, if you

  311. just read your Bible Mo, most people in history have had to

  312. try to follow God without his Spirit, indwelling them.

  313. And so, you know, I mean to give an example, when David prays in

  314. Psalm 51, one of the things he says is God, please don't take

  315. your Holy Spirit from me. He's repenting after he's

  316. committed a great sin. Well, that was a very real

  317. possibility that God could have just Drawn from him and he would

  318. have been devoid of the spirit. I mean, that that's a terrible

  319. thought to have right. The fact that God dwells in US

  320. permanently is an amazing idea. That, you know, I do, he's

  321. always with me, he's always available to comfort me.

  322. You know, to point me to truth to reassure me to convict me

  323. when I step out of bounds to produce fruit and me to gift me

  324. to empower me too. Be useful and functional and

  325. powerful, and his kingdom. I mean, it's all those are new

  326. ideas and those are worth celebrating.

  327. And before Pentecost, none of that was really true.

  328. I mean, the spirit could come up on someone and Empower someone

  329. for a specific task or Inspire, someone to write a letter, that

  330. would be, you know, a prophecy That Be Inspired or something

  331. like that. But that, that's a new idea.

  332. And so, I actually, as I was thinking This, I just did a

  333. quick search for Spirit in the New Testament and I put down a

  334. few verses that I thought were significant for us.

  335. So I'll just run through these if that's okay.

  336. That's great. So, John 6:63 spirit gives life,

    John 6:63

  337. you know, the holy spirit is a person.

  338. He's a member of the godhead of the Trinity.

  339. He creates life, he regenerates people, he creates life in them.

  340. That, that continues to spring up.

  341. Like Jesus talked about, Out leading to eternal life.

  342. John 14:26, the spirit teaches us, and reminds us of what Jesus

    John 14:26

  343. taught, John 16:8, the spirit convicts, the world of sin of

    John 16:8

  344. righteousness, and a coming judgment John. 16:13 the Spirit

    John 16:13

  345. guides us to the truth Acts 1:8 the spirit empowers us to

    Acts 1:8

  346. witness about Jesus, carry out his mission.

  347. Romans 8, the spirit removes, our slavery, to the law gives

  348. us, life gives us freedom and the ability to 0 Obey.

  349. God Romans 15:13, the spirit gives us hope so that we don't

    Romans 15:13

  350. have to live in despair. First Corinthians 2:12.

    1 Corinthians 2:12

  351. The spirit allows us to understand the things of God,

  352. which is a very interesting verse.

  353. First Corinthians 6:11, the spirit.

    1 Corinthians 6:11

  354. Washes us sanctifies us. That means he makes us holy and

  355. he justifies us before God. First Corinthians, 6:17, this

  356. Spirit joins with our spirit, which is a very interesting

  357. idea. First Corinthians, 12 and

  358. several other places in New Testament, the spirit gives

  359. gifts, or supernatural abilities for the common good and for the

  360. edification of the Church, Second Corinthians 5:5 the

    2 Corinthians 5:5

  361. spirit is the guarantee that we belong to God.

  362. Second Corinthians 13:14, the spirit puts us in fellowship

    2 Corinthians 13:14

  363. with God, Galatians 5, the spirit produces good things or

  364. good fruit in our lives and it stands in opposition to evil

  365. Ephesians. 4:4 the spirit creates Unity among Believers.

    Ephesians 4:4

  366. Philippians 3, & John, Ford the spirit enables us to truly

  367. worship God and second, Timothy 1:7.

  368. The spirit grants us power, love and self-control Roll.

  369. And then this is the last one, I'll mention.

  370. But first, John 4:13, the spirit is what assures us that we abide

    John 4:13

  371. in God and that God lives inside of us.

  372. So, I mean, that's, that's pretty significant list, and

  373. that's not all the references. That's just a handful, and all

  374. that is new at Pentecost. Yeah.

  375. So it's pretty clear that the role of the spirit plays a huge

  376. role in our life, and our devotion to God and our devotion

  377. to others. Can you maybe help land the

  378. plane and this weekend coming up and just help us, like, how can

  379. we prepare for this weekend? Yeah, sure.

  380. Last, last thought I'll offer is, you know, based out of 1st

  381. Corinthians 3 First, Corinthians 6, where Paul says you you all,

  382. you know, in the South this is where y'all is actually helpful

  383. pronoun, right? The don't, you know, y'all all

  384. of you are the are the, you know, and dwelt by the spirit.

  385. You are God's Temple corporately.

  386. So there is this idea that God lives in the corporate body and

  387. maybe a different or distinct way than he lives inside the

  388. individual. So what implications does that

  389. have for me? Well that means it's very

  390. important that I gather together with other believers.

  391. Because if God inhabits a corporate group of people

  392. differently than an individual, well that's why you have versus

  393. like in Hebrews 10 that says, hey be careful.

  394. Don't don't forsake the assembling of yourselves

  395. together that God may speak in a certain way he may he may move

  396. in a certain way. He may do things among this body

  397. of people that I if I don't gather if I'm not part of that

  398. or if I neglect that If it's not important to me, I'm going to

  399. miss out on something, right? That's that's that's a big deal.

  400. That's an important piece. So I think you know, for us is,

  401. I mean, there's lots of different applications for this

  402. but that means, like coming to church on the weekends

  403. important, it means being in biblical Community is important.

  404. Like if I want to hear certain things from God, if I want to

  405. experience certain aspects of who God is and what he's doing,

  406. I've got a, I've got to be a part of all that, right?

  407. I mean even Jesus said, Ed, you know where two or three are

  408. gathered in my name, I am there among you.

  409. So you know, I think we've become a little bit dismissive

  410. of that in our culture. We think that well I can just

  411. listen to the podcast or I can just watch later or I you know,

  412. I'll just do the Bible study by myself.

  413. Would that your shortchanging yourself right?

  414. In the scripture speak against that.

  415. And so, as Believers, you know, if the spirit indwells and us

  416. there ought to be a yearning for us to gather together to

  417. experience, God in a way that I just am not going to experience

  418. him and isolation, it's good. There should be an anticipation.

  419. Yeah, yeah. And you have a contribution to

  420. bring right? I mean it's it's like you bring

  421. a bunch of little lights together and the room gets a lot

  422. brighter. Yeah.

  423. So I mean that's not just I'm coming to receive but I'm I'm

  424. coming to be a part of something.

  425. I'm coming to join this corporate activity where God is

  426. somehow more present. I don't know if more present but

  427. it's Going to do, maybe something unique or different

  428. than I can experience, if I'm not a part of that Gathering and

  429. that's worth celebrating. I mean, all those realities and

  430. truths of the scripture of what the spirit does, in me for me,

  431. through me, you know, and that's worth rejoicing over and just

  432. being like, this is a big deal. Yeah, it's a big deal.

  433. It helps me thinking about this weekend because I think some

  434. direction around. How should I be walking in on

  435. Sunday morning? I should have Spiritus A

  436. celebratory Spirit. That's ready to Rejoice

  437. acknowledging, who the spirit is, and what he's done, being

  438. reflective upon that. But really, we celebrate.

  439. This is we get to party because of what the spirit done and what

  440. he's given us and get do this for one another, what a powerful

  441. thing that God has given us. Amen.

  442. Let's not take it lightly. I agree for sure.

  443. Well thank you guys very much for sharing.

  444. Thank you for all these passages to reflect on this has been

  445. great. Thanks Chris.
