Matthew Pt. 87 - Jesus the Lord of David

We are still on Tuesday. It's Holy Week.

Jesus is going to the cross. He came in Sunday morning.

The triumphal entry, all the big to do.

Everybody knows who Jesus is. Everybody knows that there is

this rabbi who is just changing everything.

He's healing people. People are going, is he the

Messiah? Is he the Messiah?

I think he might be. People are calling him the Son

of David. He keeps calling himself the Son

of Man, which is a messianic label.

So he's not hiding the fact that he is the Messiah and that he

believes he's the Messiah. So this is already appalling to

the Jewish leadership. But now he's come in and he has

overturned the tables in the temple.

This wasn't just a side gesture. There wasn't just some small

operation. This was a massive extortion

that was taking place season after season, year after year.

And Jesus comes in and acts like he has authority over the whole

temple, rebukes everybody, flips his stuff over and says, stop.

This should be a House of prayer.

And they're going OK. It was one thing when he was

doing his stuff out in the wilderness and traveling around

in different places and preaching, but now he's coming

in and getting up in our business.

You can start to see, oh, This is why these guys are going to

kill him. But as we go through even more

today and then especially when we start in chapter 23, you're

going to you're going to have the fullest context probably

then you've never even seen before of going 0.

I completely understand why they killed him now.

Like it all makes sense. It sounds like man, he's just a

good guy loving people. Yes, absolutely, yes.

And also he is very much poking them in the eye over and over

and over and over and saying I'm king over you and everybody.

So because of their hard hearts, they don't respond well to that.

So in this case, though, it's still Tuesday, we've broken this

up in multiple sermons because Jesus is a much better preacher

than me and it takes me a lot longer.

But we had the fig tree this morning.

There have been multiple tests of this Lamb of God, the

Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, and the scribes.

There have been questions about His authority, questions about

taxes, questions about the resurrection, questions about

the law. Jesus is found perfect and His

testers are found lacking. And this is His transition now

to fully unload on the Jewish leaders in chapter 23.

Here we are in verse 41 now, while the Pharisees were

gathered together. So they're still there, 100,000

people in the temple courts, massive, massive crowd.

It's not like 65 people. Everybody's everywhere,

Everybody's listening, everybody's paying attention.

What's going on? They've confronted him.

They've asked this question. He answered it perfectly.

He tells a parable against them. He tells another parable against

them. He tells another parable against

them. All this back and forth is going

on. He just shares the greatest

commandment. After they asked about the

resurrection and now while they're still gathered together,

Jesus asked them a question saying, What do you think about

the Christ? Whose son is he?

They said to him, the son of David.

He said to them, how is it then that David in the Spirit calls

him Lord saying, and here's where he quotes Psalm 110.

The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I put your

enemies under your feet. If David then calls him Lord,

how is he his son? And no one was able to answer

him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any

more questions. Lord, we love you.

I pray that you would just help us to honor Jesus even more this

morning, to to recognize His greatness, His glory, His

awesomeness, and that we would be moved to a joyful obedience.

That we would be moved to a joyful delight, to just smile,

to just worship. That we would be drawn

vertically because we recognize how perfect you are, how wise

you are, and how good you are and how wild it is.

That You would love us so much that you would care, that you

would sacrifice, that you would even bother with us, and yet

that you would set Your affection upon us and then still

set us at the right hand with the Lord Jesus Christ.

He earned it, Lord, and He deserves it, and He's worthy of

it. And now because of His

righteousness, we become righteous as well.

Lord, thank you for your great kindness.

Bring revelation as Your word is preached.

Lord, I pray for anointing right now.

I pray that power would come, that your Saints would be

blessed, that they would be helped, that they would be

encouraged, that they would receive everything they need,

that you would perform surgery, that you would bring correction,

that you would bring wisdom, that you would bring boldness.

In Jesus name, we thank you, Amen.

So now Jesus turns the corner. They've been testing and they've

been testing and they've been testing and they've been testing

and they've been testing him. This is the transition statement

for what's about to come in chapter 23.

Spoiler alert, it gets crazy. I've already told you he's been

going nuclear. So it's like come on pastor, how

are you going to escalate? You'll see like it.

It just gets even more more direct.

He's already been direct. He's already talked to them like

no one has ever spoken to them before.

They're already outraged. And still this is his

transition. He's going, OK, I've passed all

the tests. They're standing there looking

like idiots in front of everybody.

He's already exposed them in multiple ways.

There's layers to his to his correction.

There's layers of depth. And the more you look at it, you

go, Oh my goodness, he does this, but he's also doing this.

He's amazing. He's Jesus and he it.

All these things should draw you to worship.

Like I tell you all the time, the Bible's not boring.

You're boring if you think the Bible's not awesome.

It's not a Bible problem. I assure you.

Everything is here. There's light, there's

revelation. It's exciting when we can

understand what's really taking place here.

So remember, here we are, verse 41.

Jesus has already made multiple references to the Messiah to

himself already today on this Tuesday, most potently, most

powerfully in chapter 21. I'm going to go there really

quick. Turning to the left in chapter

21, in verse 42, Jesus said to them, have you never read in the

Scriptures? Which is already a slap in the

face. Yeah, they had read in the

Scriptures. Have you never read in the

Scriptures? The stone that the builders

rejected has become the cornerstone.

This was the Lord's doing and it's marvelous in our eyes.

Therefore, I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken

away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.

He ties everything in. He's tying in the fig tree.

He's just, he's just weaving everything perfectly.

So the application he's making, he's calling himself the

cornerstone. They understood that He was

calling himself the cornerstone because it comes right at the

end of him giving the parable of the tenants, the unfaithful

tenants. Remember the master says, hey,

work my vineyard and then he says send me the fruit and my

harvest that you owe me. He sends his servants to

collect. They kill the servant.

He sends the servants, they kill the servant.

He sends the OR they abuse them and he says I'll send my son.

They'll really recognize my authority.

Now they kill the son. They tell Jesus is telling his

parable against them and he says, haven't you read?

The stone that the builders rejected has become the

cornerstone. And he says and the one who

falls on this stone will be broken to pieces and when it

falls on anyone, it will crush him.

This is very clear Messiah language.

So Jesus has made multiple references to himself already

today. That's him quoting Psalm 118,

that passage about the cornerstone.

He's pointing out that he's the Messiah.

He's going to do it a lot more in chapter 23, but Jesus is done

being asked questions. He now fully steps into asking

his own question about the Messiah.

That's what's taking place here. He's like, I can receive all of

your tests. I can handle everything that you

guys can throw at me. He passes everything Florida

State and he goes my turn and now he asks another, another

question. Earlier in the exchanges, the

chief priests and the elders of Israel, they ask, by what

authority are you doing these things and who gave you this

authority? That was in chapter 21.

So he comes in, he disrupts everything.

That's not a genuine question. They're not saying, hey, we're

just really curious, like, where did you get the power?

No, they're saying, who do you think you are?

Like they haven't arrested him yet because he walks with that

much power. It's one man.

Why don't you just grab him? Well, they fear the people, but

I think they also fear Jesus to a degree because they're going

like him. Who do you think you are?

And he goes, you want to know who I am?

And they're like, yeah, he goes, then I'll ask you a question.

Since you're such excellent judges of whether or not someone

has come from heaven or from earth.

This is him mocking them. He says John's baptism, John's

baptism, ministry for repentance.

And they go, yeah, did that come from heaven or did that come

originate with man? And he just hit him between the

eyes again because he knows they're cowards and liars, like

like most politicians. And so instead of answering the

direct question with a direct answer, they go, If we say it

came from heaven, then he'll say, then why didn't you believe

John? So then he's got us.

And if we say no, it's a man made origin.

All the people know that John was a prophet, but we deny it.

So they come back and say we don't know.

And he goes, then neither will I tell you since you don't know

whether or not something comes from heaven or not.

Does it really matter if I were to answer your question?

You can't determine either way. He's showing them.

He's showing all these people that the, the, the scribes, the

Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees, all the rulers that

all the people were impressed with, they make Jesus sick.

They stink in the nostrils of God and God is furious with them

because they have misled his people.

They're blind guides and he wants the flock to see that they

have blind guides. He's going.

They don't even know. But see, everybody did know that

they knew. Just like when you and I watched

political debates and the person asks both politicians the

question and neither answers it. And we're screaming at our TV

going, oh, just answer the question.

And they, they're, they're crafty.

They're Serpentine. They're not innocent as doves.

They are wise as serpents. And they have the venom of

serpents. That's what these guys are.

They're venomous. They're snakes.

They're devouring the people. They're not true shepherds of

the people. They don't love the people.

They don't lay down their lives for the people.

They don't help the people. They just want to impress the

people. They just want the people to

look up to them and call them rabbi and teacher, and they want

the prime seats and they want honor in the culture and they

want authority. So Jesus has exposed them.

They're not actually curious. They're saying, who do you think

you are? It's an accusation.

They're accusing him of not having the authority to do what

he's done, but he's exposed them and he's revealed to everybody

that these guys would not recognize a move of God if it

dunked half of Israel in the Jordan River, because that's

about what John did. And they still couldn't

recognize that God was calling his people to repentance and

preparing the way of the Lord. So funny enough, now after all

these tests that they've given him, he actually leads them to

the answer of their original question.

He's actually come full circle. He goes, you want, you want to

know where my authority comes from?

And they go, yeah, tell me about John's ministry.

Is that from heaven or from man? We don't know.

Yeah, you do know. But you're liars and you won't

say it out loud, so I'm not going to answer your question

either. But now, after he, after he

takes them through, answers their questions and then tells

parables against them, he actually comes full circle right

now. And he is answering it.

He's come all the way to this moment.

He's leading them to the answer of the original question.

He's given them the parables of the two sons.

Remember, they're the son who says I will obey father right

away, and then does nothing. He gives the parable the

tenants. They're the wicked tenants who

kill, who abuse the servants and kill the son.

And then he gives the parable the wedding feast.

They're the man who comes into the banquet, but he refuses to

be clothed by the host, so he gets thrown out.

And now once they're done testing him and he emerges as

the spotless lamb, he re establishes his authority and he

shows that he is greater than all, even greater than their

hero David. He's answering their original

question. What do you think about the

Christ? This is a very common thing.

Rabbis, they would they would talk to one another and ask one

another questions. Hey, what about this, What about

this? How do we interpret that?

What's the, what's the right way to view this?

What does the text say? How should we read it?

So it's a very common thing. He goes, hey, what do you think

about the Christ? Whose son is he?

He knows exactly what they're about to say because they have a

giant theological error. It is a giant ignorance that all

of Israel had. They knew that the Christ was

the Son of David, meaning he is a descendant of King David.

They knew that that is accurate, but he knew that's all they

thought the Messiah was. This is all that the Jewish

audience, This is all that the Jewish readers of Matthew

thought about the Messiah. He is a great man.

He's anointed by God. He is sent by God to restore our

power and our Kingdom. They did not understand His

deity. They did not believe that He

would be God coming to be with them.

They thought He was God sending a man, and they still thought

that David was greater. So Jesus is exposing this right

in front of everybody, and they're thinking to themselves,

where did this guy come from? He didn't come from our system,

our our priestly system, our temple system, our hierarchy of

the way it worked, the way that you can work up through the

ranks by following and or being the son of somebody who was

already in it. He didn't come through Rome's

system and their minds. These are the only two options.

Where did Jesus come from? Who do you think you are?

We got our system and there's Roman authority.

What else is there? We see this problem today, don't

we? People are like, the government

didn't give you permission for that.

Guess what? There's an authority bigger than

the government. Oh my goodness.

Did the church give you permission for that?

There's an authority bigger than the church.

Did your father give you permission for that?

There's an authority bigger than the household.

All three of those authorities are established by the authority

of heaven. What system did he come from?

Who is he? What other option is there?

Well, we'll tell you, Colossians tells us.

Who is he? He is the image of the invisible

God, the first born of all creation.

For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth,

visible and invisible, whether Thrones or dominions or rulers

or authorities, All things were created through Him and for Him.

And he is. Before all things and in Him all

things hold together, and He is the Head of the Body, the

Church. He is the beginning, the first

born from the dead, that in everything He might be

preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of

God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to

Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace

by the blood of his cross. He sits at the right hand of God

the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge

the living and the dead. That's who he thinks he is.

He's Jesus, the eternal King. Then now, forever, always Jesus,

only Jesus. There can be no other name by

which man can be saved except for the name and the blood of

Jesus. This is who he is.

And they're going, we don't even like that this guy's calling

himself the Messiah. We don't like that.

But in their mind still, the Messiah was just a man.

So Jesus, even though he quotes all the time, he says I'm the

Son of man. They knew that was messianic

language. So he's like, I'm the Son of

man. They're like, he's quoting

Daniel Chapter 7. He's calling himself the

Daniel 7 · chapter mention

Messiah. But he's so.

Brilliant in that they didn't understand and they did not

interpret that passage properly because they still didn't think,

even though we read it now, Hindsight's 2020, right?

We read him like, of course, he's eternally God, but they

thought it was poetic language. They thought, no, it just means

he's a great man, anointed by the Lord to restore the Kingdom

to us. They still made it about them,

everything they saw. When the Messiah comes, what's

he going to do? He's going to give everything to

us instead of seeing the will of the Father for the Messiah.

It's all about Jesus. Everything's about Jesus.

Everything's about him. Well, do we get blessed in the

process? Yeah.

That's the crazy part, that we become the righteousness of God

through Jesus, through the Messiah.

But they didn't understand that. So when he says I'm the Son of

Man, they're like he's saying he's the Messiah.

They knew he was saying he was the Messiah, but they didn't

have yet the extra offense that he's teaching them right now.

They did not have the revelation that he's saying, hey, just so

you guys know, you know how every time I said Son of Man

over the past few years, they go, yeah, he's going, what I was

saying was the proper intake, proper interpretation of the

Scriptures, which is I'm actually divine.

I'm actually the Son of God, which is why when he's on trial,

he's saying, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the

right hand of God and they they RIP their clothes in that

moment. They go, what you've been saying

you're the Messiah for three years, but now you're saying

you're divine, crucify him and they lose their minds.

And we're just like, what? These Jewish guys are really

upset about some stuff. The the revelation was fully

landing on them and crashing on them like a building, like the

cornerstone finally crushing them.

And they're going, I can't believe he's going welcome.

It's always been my game and you're just a part of it.

It's always pointed to me. It's always about me.

You may crucify me now and then I'm going to take up my life

again and then I'm going to rule over you.

You're everybody's going to bow down to Jesus one way or

another. So this is what he's starting to

walk them into. This is what he's toying with

them. He is trolling them in a sense.

David's son or or the Messiah? What?

What? I'm misquoting him now.

Whose son is he? What do you think about the

Christ? Whose Son is he, son of David

True. True, but it's not the whole

truth. It's part of the truth.

He is actually a descendant of David that was prophesied.

It has to be so. But they thought he was only a

descendant of David. And this is what he's starting

to open their eyes up to. This is why.

This is why when you get to the end here and they says no one

was able to answer him a word because they're like, is he

saying that's what he's saying? That's why this was so crazy.

That's why this is such a crazy mic drop and a crazy slap in the

face and a chain, a crazy shift of gears because he's going so

if if he's a son of David, why would David call his descendant

his Lord? So that's what's happening in

the text there of 110 of Psalm 110 that Jesus is quoting in

verse 44. So David in the Spirit is saying

the Lord said to my Lord, let me interpret this for you.

He's saying the Father God said to the Son.

That's what David is understanding as he's, as David

is interpreting from the Holy Spirit.

So you're like the Lord said to my Lord, is he talking to

himself? No.

So think of it this way. The Father said to the Messiah,

OK that. That's.

How they would have read this text, the David said, the Father

said to the Christ, sit at my right hand until I put your

enemies under your feet. But but David calls the second

one his Lord. So it's one thing for David say

the Lord said to my descendant. The Lord said to my son, It had

been one thing that David said, the Lord said to my offspring,

but he said the Lord said. To my.

Lord, and they hadn't seen it. They'd read it, but they had not

seen it and they still might not see it.

Right now he's going, how can David call a descendant his

master? Because you got to understand

David is like pinnacle for them. David is legendary.

Patriarchal status like David is the dopest.

They love David. Nobody can be greater than

David. And in Jewish culture anyway,

your descendants can't be greater than you.

The OR the originator is greater than the follower than the one

who comes later. So it just makes no sense for

them whatsoever. How can David call his future

descendant greater than him? They're like, no, no, no, the

Messiah is going to be great, but he's not going to be greater

than David. He's going to be a king like

David. He's going to be anointed like

David was, but he's he's not greater than David.

Like nobody's greater than David and Jesus is.

He just asked a question. It's a very, very wise teaching

tool. I need to grow in wisdom and be

more like Jesus. It's a very wise teaching tool

Whenever you know somebody believes the wrong thing about

something, instead of just saying, here's 17 reasons you're

wrong, which can kind of be my my angle of approach a lot of

times, but to ask to go, well, if that's true, then what about

this? And you step back and you let

their you let them come to humility and repentance, or you

let their head explode or they walk away in silence.

When we understand who Jesus is, it changes your entire life.

You don't say the stupid things that people say about him all

the time. Ignorant things sometimes,

rebellious things sometimes. But if we really understand who

Jesus is, it draws you to obedience.

It changes your Sunday afternoon.

It changes your Monday morning. It changes your Tuesday nights.

It affects every part of your life because you're going hang

on a second. I now have to reconcile with

this man Jesus. I now have to reconcile with

this Messiah, not just one sent by God to bless people and teach

some good things, which all those things are true.

They're massive understatements, but they're true.

But the one who is God? And the one who?

Demands obedience, the one who commands my loyalty and love,

and the one who loved me first. It will make you sweeter to your

spouse. It will make you more diligent

as you disciple your children. It will send you with enthusiasm

to share the gospel with others. When you really see Jesus for

who he is, you're just going like, what have I been doing

with my life? And he's like, not much, but you

can now. Now you can have the life that's

truly life, the only life you were ever intended for.

The life where you actually walk with me.

Everything else is what what? Prove it, make explain it to me.

Explain how anything else could have value apart from Jesus.

He's our creator. All things were made by Him.

All things are made for him. That includes me.

So I'm going to find my greatest pleasure, fulfillment, and

satisfaction when I operate according to my design.

You can use a screwdriver to do a lot of different things.

You can stab someone with it. You could pry something open

with it. But that's not what a

screwdriver is for. And you and I are our

screwdrivers. We will be wounded if we're used

to do the wrong things. But.

When we're used. Properly we go.

This is my purpose. It is satisfying, it is

pleasing, it is right. There is good news.

There's only good news in Jesus. He's a cornerstone that crushes.

Yeah. He's also the cornerstone of the

church that we build upon. And you can be one of the stones

in the body of Christ that aligns yourself perfectly to the

cornerstone. He sets the standard.

Those are the only options, though.

Be crushed by the cornerstone or align yourself to the

cornerstone. No, no, no.

I'm with you. You guys.

Good. That's that's the right place to

be. You're welcome here.

You're loved here. And he's building his Kingdom

through his people. What do you think?

About the Christ, whose son is he?

So he knew what they were going to say.

They they knew. He was, he knew they were going

to say, a descendant of David, a son of David.

Remember, Matthew wrote his gospel for Jews.

So that's who Matthew was intending his audience through.

So remember the Jewish readers, not just those who were there

that day in the temple courts who focused a lot on them, but

also remember the Jewish audience reading this is gone.

Wow. And Matthew's going, yeah, I'm

telling you guys like, we didn't understand the scriptures, that

his own disciples didn't understand the scriptures.

Even after the resurrection, they're walking down the road

all sad. And the resurrected Jesus comes

to them, speaks with them. They don't recognize it's him.

And he says, what's wrong? They're like, dude, do you not

know what's happened? Are you the only person in this

region who doesn't know what's happened here in these days?

Proving again my point that everybody knew everything about

what was taking place and everybody knew about this Jesus

who was. He's like, what things?

And they tell him, and then he starts to open them, open the

Scriptures from Moses all the way through and show them

everything all day long as they walk on the road.

And then they arrive in Emmaus, and he acts as though he'll go

on farther. And they said, no, please stay

with us. You're like the best Bible study

bro we've ever had. And he comes in with them.

He reveals himself to who he is. And they go and he vanishes.

They Sprint back the miles that they had just walked to

Jerusalem and say, you guys aren't going to believe this.

But even then, they finally could see.

It was always in the Scriptures, but they couldn't see it.

This is why as we come to the next couple of chapters that are

often interpreted for end times events, This is why your pastor

is going to approach them the way that he does.

You know, prophecies much easier to look at on the back end than

it is on the front end. We see that over and over and

over in Scripture. Everybody goes, I think this

means that we'll see. We'll see.

You know, when I like to tell you what prophecy means on the

back end, I go, I can tell you exactly what that meant.

Much easier, much safer to do. But everybody goes, no, it's got

to mean this. Like I've seen a lot of folks

being real sure about a lot of things that were going to come

and then turns out it looked different from that.

So just some food for thought as we process what we're going to

come into the next couple of chapters.

He knew what they were. Going to say Matthew wrote this

gospel for the Jews. He wants their eyes to be

opened. He wants them to see.

But of course, Jesus is the greatest Bible teacher, and he's

showing everyone here something that they've never seen before.

Right there in the Psalms, right there was David, their hero.

They thought they were going to. Yet the Messiah was going to be

a great human ruler, a political and military descendant of David

who would restore Israel's Kingdom to them.

They thought he'd be anointed by God, but not actually God.

They thought he'd be righteous, but only human.

They didn't ever think that he would actually be divine.

And they certainly did not think that when the Messiah came, he

would say, hey, I'm going to RIP everything away from you and

give it to someone else. That is not the vision that they

had for their Messiah. So he's giving them whiplash of

big time. Jesus Yanks the rug out from

unto them. I'm the Messiah.

What? I'm taking everything away from

you. What?

By the way, I'm God, What? Crucify this guy?

That's the only thing we can do with him because he's just way.

He's presenting way too many problems here.

He's messing up our theology and we don't like that kind of thing

around here. They can't.

Receive him because they don't recognize him.

This guy that they've. Got in front of them, is furious

with them. He's told them that sinners are

going to enter the Kingdom of heaven before they will.

He tells them that they're going to be thrown out and crushed by

him even though they tried to dispose of him, that he is

selected and that they are rejected.

Can you see why that they're going to start to want to kill

him? Can you see why they already

want to kill him? Jesus still creates extreme

responses in people today. People still want to put him in

categories that he did not give you permission to put him in.

Well, I think Jesus is make sure whatever you say next coincides

with what he says about himself. Like it has to, you have to cast

a plain vote. CS Lewis famously said it and

said it excellently. Let us not say this nonsense

about him being a good moral teacher.

We have to deal with something. If I call myself a scrambled

egg, you have to say Joe Michael is one of three things.

Joe Michael's a liar. He knows he's not a scrambled

egg. Or you say, bless his heart, Joe

Michael thinks he's a scrambled egg.

He's crazy. Or you say, truly, John Michael

is a scrambled egg. I believe it with all my heart,

but you don't go. Well, you know, Jim, Michael's a

really good hang on, Isn't he big on the whole scrambled egg

thing? Yeah, I just kind of overlooked

that. No, like, that's his whole

shtick. That's his whole thing.

You have to reconcile with his whole scrambled egg teaching

because it's the thing he says all the time.

So you don't get to put Jesus in any other category.

He is Lord and God bless his heart.

He thinks he's Lord and God. He's a he was a deceived crazy

man who also somehow changed the whole world and raised himself

from the dead. But these are things you have to

reconcile with or he's a liar. Lord Liar.

Or lunatic, the trilemma, as it's famously been called.

That's it. That's where he lands.

But he he still creates extreme responses in people.

Because I've got to. Reconcile with the King of Glory

and my spirit. If I am of my Father the devil

and I'm outside of Christ and I'm not responding in humility

and grace to the Lord, then I'm just going maybe for you, maybe

I may I say all kinds of stuff that just doesn't make sense.

It still does not address the heart and the root of the issue

where Jesus is taking us to. Jesus is not just the Son of

David. Jesus is the Lord of David.

When you get to heaven, you're going to see David worshipping

the Lord Jesus Christ. He's not going to say, oh come

on, son, let me teach you a thing or two.

No, that's not how that works. Jesus created David, and Jesus

is starting to bring that revelation to them fully, but

without even saying it, he's going to more.

When we get to chapter 23, he plainly just throws down even

more so. So he's taking them.

To Bible study. How is it then that David in the

Spirit? Calls his.

Son Lord and they're gone. They don't have an answer for

that. They don't have an answer that

that he just broke in their heads and they're and instead of

humbling themselves and saying please teach us, which is of

course, Jesus will always work with humility.

Man. We always seen his strength week

after week after week. Pastor, I feel like Jesus just

been dropping. Well, that's where we are.

That's where we were in the word.

Jesus is still the whole Jesus. He's he.

If you're hard hearted, this is the Jesus you get.

If you're soft and tender, this isn't what you get.

You get. Restoration.

But he's taken them to Bible study.

So for Jews, again, David's got this superior legendary

patriarchal status and now they're going wait a second, he

does call his descendant Lord. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

It's because he's not. Only human.

He's also divine. And now they have to hesitate

again and they go, we can't cast a vote on this for the same

reason that they wouldn't cast a vote on John the Baptist.

Is his ministry from heaven or from man?

And Jesus goes, what's this verse about?

And they go, oh boy, no comment again.

We're done. We don't want to.

We're done talking. We're going to take our ball and

go home. We don't want to do this

anymore. No fun, no fair.

Jesus isn't just the Son of David, He's the Lord of David

because he is the Son of God. They wanted an.

Earthly king who was going to defeat Rome, but they got the

king of heaven who comes to defeat sin and death.

That was not their prediction. That was not their expectation.

And they had all the verses, they had all the scriptures and

still they were saying when the Messiah comes, he's going to

beat up the Romans. And Jesus said you were, you're

aiming way too small. When I come, I'm going to, I'm

going to do what no man has ever done.

I'm going to change the hearts of people.

I can change the hearts of man. You can force them to do things

with the sword. Any idiot can do that.

Whoever's the mightiest, whoever's got the biggest army,

you win. He says.

I, I can do the miraculous and I can actually change the will of

a man. I can change the will of the

ruler of a nation from the highest to the lowest.

Jesus can make people brand new. Jesus can reveal the Kingdom,

the Kingdom that matters most, the Kingdom that starts small

like a mustard seed, but it keeps growing and eventually it

covers the whole earth. They thought God would send the

Messiah. They never imagined that God

would come as the Messiah, and now the King himself is

humiliating them with the scriptures.

If they would be humble, he would receive them, but since

they're prideful. They get crushed.

By the cornerstone, here's what's also also powerful about

in verse 44, the Lord said to my Lord, sit.

And so that that's the part he emphasizes.

The Lord said to my Lord, that's the part he zoomed in on.

He's gone. He calls him Lord.

But look at the rest of the verse.

The Lord said to my Lord, well, what did he say to him?

What does the father say to the son?

Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.

So not only is he going pointing out the part about, hey, David

calls his descendant his Lord, what are you guys going to do

with that? Because you know what that

means, right? It means that his descendant has

to be divine. But it's also the threat, the

warning His enemies are going to be put under His feet.

So all the warnings are coming full circle and these guys are

going and I think This is why they have the response that they

did in verse 46. I think they had enough fear of

God and enough hesitancy in the moment after He drops this one

on them. This one might have gone over

some folks heads so it might have landed with everybody.

I don't know, I wasn't there. I don't know about everybody's

understandings. And no one was able to answer

him a word. From that day on, they did not

dare ask Him any more questions, 'cause they're going, he just

shifted gears. He just, he just put this thing

into a different gear entirely. Is he?

Saying, I think he's saying he is saying we're closing.

There's this warning. In this threat, Christ will sit

at the right hand of the Father, and the Father will put the

enemies of Christ under the Christ's feet.

So he's going to be enthroned and he's going to share the

Father's authority and he's going to put his foot on the

neck of his enemies. Psalm One. 10.

What we read earlier, the whole thing's.

About Jesus, the Lord says to my Lord, sit at my right hand.

This is the Father delighting in the Son, until I make your

enemies your footstool. The Lord sends.

Forth from Zion, your mighty scepter rule in the midst of

your enemies your people will offer themselves freely on the

day of your power in holy garments.

Most scholars think that this chapter, this chapter 10, the

seven verses that this is prophecy about the coming of

Jesus the first time that it's also going to that it, this is

also descriptive of the church age as it's called that you and

I live in now. And that it also is referring is

referring to the final prophecy to be fulfilled.

So most scholars say this chapter is super awesome because

it's all about Jesus, but it's also super cool because it's

partly fulfilled. Some of it's still being

fulfilled right now as we preach, and then some of it is

still to be fulfilled finally and totally later.

They will offer. Themselves freely on the day of

your power in holy garments, from the womb of the morning.

The dew of your youth will be yours.

The Lord has sworn. It will not change his mind.

You are a priest forever after the Order of Melchizedek.

So he's a priest and a king. He's not just one or the other,

unlike everybody else. You're a priest or you're a

king. Jesus is the priest and the

king, The Lord is at your right hand.

He will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

He will execute judgement among the nations, filling them with

corpses. He will shatter chiefs over the

wide earth. He will drink from the brook, by

the way. Therefore, he will lift up his

head. So the warrior is finished there

at the end. That's at the very end of time

when Jesus is all done. He's going to go.

Let me sip some water now. And he lifts up his head.

He's honored and glorified forever.

And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day.

Did anyone dare? Did they have the courage?

Did they have the boldness? Did they have the strength to

ask him any more questions? They were silenced that day, but

were they convinced? Many Jewish leaders come to

Christ and come to faith, but we don't know who and what, and we

don't know who there. That day eventually follows

through. We don't know who ends up being

saved. Enough about them.

What about you? Are you merely impressed with

Jesus or are you following the divine King of heaven who became

a man? He's impressive.

I didn't ask you, though, if he's impressive.

His claim isn't that he's impressive.

His claim is that he's God. The pleading that I do with you

is to say follow him, follow him, love Him, choose him, enjoy

him. Everyone will bow down before

Jesus, either in worship or as conquered enemies.

Those are the two ways everybody's going to be before

Jesus. Is his foot going to be on the

neck? Will you be his footstool that

he prompts that he props up? And the Father says, Yep, as it

should be. Or are you?

Bowing down in worship, do you insist on retaining the illusion

of power that you have over your life?

That's what these guys are doing.

We have the power, we have it, and we will not yield it to this

man. Or.

Do you surrender to the son of King David?

And do you surrender to the King of King David?

The call is to repent and to love and to follow him now.

Not because you're afraid of his foot on your neck.

Love and follow him now because you're thankful that he actually

loves you and that he came to rescue you for himself.

So for all the greatness we've talked about, you go.

Who is this king now? I know.

Spoiler alert, many of you already know the final story.

And why did he come? He came because he was choosing

the cross to save you and me from our sins.

Why should you follow Jesus? Because Jesus loved you first,

that's why. Is there a consequence if not?

Oh undoubtedly that's that's just as plain as his love is.

And still the motive, the call is to love the Lord your God

with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

That's the command. That's the invitation, that's

our purpose. We got nothing better to do.

You have nothing better to do with your life.

Then love the Lord Jesus Christ with all your heart, soul, mind

and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

There's nothing you've dreamt up.

There's nothing that you hope for.

Young man, young woman, old man, old woman, and everything and

everybody in between. There's nothing.

There's nothing we could come up that would be better than to say

whatever pleases you, Lord. So respond in humility.

Respond with love. God loves us, that King, that

dominant king, the divine King, the prophesied king.

The Holy. King.

Sounds pretty. Scary He can be, but He came to

love you. He came to save you and bring

you to Himself so that you could be seated with Him in heavenly

places. That's crazy.

The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand.

Well, guess who also gets to sit with Jesus at the right hand?

Because of Jesus, all of his precious people that he loves.

The reason you see such heat, such anger from him is because

he loved that flock. It's because he loves people.

False teaching. He takes very seriously.

And. Miss misguiding his his flock is

something that he doesn't take lightly.

Lord. I pray for your people, for

those who know you and those who are walking with you, for those

who are far off, for those who are backsliding.

For those who. Are.

Who are weak? For those who are strong.

Lord everybody. 'S included in there.

God, I pray that we would make much of Jesus in our hearts, not

just with our heads, not with just with our knowledge, not

just to say, wow, wow, the Bible's awesome.

And it is. But then we would say Jesus, you

are worthy, and that we would actually love you and follow you

more deeply, more closely, more faithfully.

Help us to. Surrender again to another

level, Lord, Many of us are not in the place where these

Pharisees, these Sadducees, these Herodians, and these

scribes were. They were hypocritical and in

such extreme ways, Lord, But our hypocrisy has found smaller ways

to manifest. Our hypocrisy.

Hides even from us. Continue.

Lord, to reveal to us the ways that we can surrender to you and

honor you as a perfect sacrifice.

Worthy of love. And devotion walk among this

church. Lord, touch us right now.

Help us to feel your warmth. That you would be.

Loved and feared and served well.

Your people. Freely give themselves to you,

Lord, and now the Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make. His face Shinedown upon you.

And be gracious to you. The Lord lift up.

His countenance upon you and give you great peace in Jesus

name, Amen.
