Week one of prayer and fasting.

For those of you who kicked off with us last week, howdy, go.

That was awesome.

That was awesome.

The excitement around how was, it was just horrible.

Just so you know, man, it it, I, I asked somebody this morning during pre-service prayer, uh, just so you know, we pray.

During 21 days of prayer, we, we pray pre-service at nine 30.

So we invite you to do that, and then we pray on Wednesdays at 6:00 AM on Zoom.

But I, I told, I told the team and I said, and those that were praying, I said, how was week one? Was it good? And uh, they were like, it was great.

And I said, did anybody think about Popeye's chicken? And then they were like, no, not until you said it.

I was like, I can't do that no more.

I can't do that no more.

It, it, it's always, and, and I was talking to some other people and, and I don't know if this is, this happens to you when you pray and you fast if like, you know that you're going into fasting.

So the night before anybody else, like you just straight buffet it, right? And you just like, you know what, tonight is a stretchy pan night, right? We gonna get it on.

Like, I don't even know why I'm pairing ice cream and pudding, right? I don't even know, but I just know I won't be eating it for 21 days.

Anybody else can I tell y'all? And my time's running me.

Can I tell y'all my first time fasting? It was at UCF.

And you may have heard this story.

And, and, and we had a, it was a guy named Brent and he said, I'm fasted with part of Campus Crusade for Christ.

He said, I'm fasting for 40 days.

And I was like, the Lord bless you man.

Right? And so he said, he said, I'm, I'm fasting for 40 days for the ministry on this campus that God would move on this campus.

And I want to ask every student to fast at least one day with me.

And he was like, water, juice.

Water and juice.

She was like, I know.

Look Patty talking back.

Look what? So, so he says, I'm gonna fast for 40 days.

Can you handle one day? I'm like, never done it, but what's one day? I got you.

So I signed up for whatever day it is and then at the start of the day, I realized, uhoh, I'm in trouble.

Never did this.

I can't do what he's doing.

So this is what I did, and can I just confess it to you? And the Lord definitely corrected me later.

I, I, I, I had this thing where it was lunchtime, and so what I did was I started preparing for dinner at lunch because I knew my breakthrough was coming.

At the end of the day, if you're fasting in prayer, don't do that.

It distracts you, but let me just say this.

The meat did taste good later.

Let's pray as we jump into God's word.

Holy Spirit, we thank you that as we come around your word, God, that we lean in, that we move like never before into your presence, and that we sit in a place where we're hearing from you and we're growing and God that we can see.

The power of your mighty hand at work.

So, Lord, I thank you that as I communicate today, God, I pray that you communicate through me with precision, boldness, and power in the mighty name of Jesus.

We pray, and if you're ready, say, let's go.

Chronicles chapter 20, I'm sorry, second Chronicles chapter 20.

We kicked off our series last Sunday.

Anything can happen and we went into.

Of this 21 days of prayer and fasting, looking at a moment in history, I won't read it all, but in this, in this passage of scripture and I encourage you to read it.

There's 20 something verses I, I encourage you to read it.

There is a king by the name of Phat who is a leader of God's people and a report comes, you can see it there, a report comes that there's an army that wants to attack him and the Bible says that he was moved with fear and decided that he was going to fast and inquire of the Lord.

In doing so, he also told all of the people that we were going to fast and seek the Lord together.

And then as you continue in, he's having this conversation with the Lord and he begins to remind God of all of his promises, all that he has declared over the people, and that their attention was going to be focused on him because they could not themselves win the fight.

After they pray and after they fast, it says this, that Jehosaphat and all of the little ones and everyone continued to lay their attention before the Lord.

And as they did, so a prophet came and spoke a word that was from God's heart to them.

And he said this, you don't even need to fight.

But what you do need to do is show up.

Says that the battle is not yours.

But it belongs to the Lord.

Now you will have to go down and when you go down, just stand still and watch God do his thing.

The Bible says that the people continue their posture of praise or continue their posture, focus on God, and it says that when they rose early to go out to the battlefield, it says that they added something that God never asked them to do.

It says that as they went out to the battle, they decided that they were going to praise the name of the Lord.

Like God told 'em to stand still and to watch what he does.

God had spoken to them that he was going to give them victory, and they decided that since they didn't have to physically fight, that they will continue to praise.

And so there were some things that we said last week that I wanna remind us of today, but I wanna focus in on one of the focuses that we said we're gonna be a part of 21 days of prayer and fasting.

So can we pick up the story? At the end of the story and then pivot towards our focus for the day.

Is that all right? Yep.

Let's go to verse 13.

I shared you the story.

Now we're just gonna use the scriptures to add fuel to it.

Verse 13 says, now all Judah with their little ones, their wives and their children stood before the Lord.

Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jesus, hael in the midst of the assemble, and he said, verse 15, listen, all of you, Judah.

You inhabitants of Jerusalem and you King Jehoshaphat, thus says the Lord to you.

Do not be afraid nor dismayed, because the great multitude for this battle is not yours, but it's God's.

How many of us in this room have felt like no matter what we face, it's ours? You ever feel like that? That it? Have you ever said this? It all rests on me.

Pha hears the word of the Lord, and the Lord literally says, actually, that's not yours.

The fight that you're carrying right now, the thing that you're carrying right now, it is the Lord's.

What if we gave it to 'em this morning and we actually didn't carry it? Think on that.

Let's keep, let's keep going.

The battle's not yours.

It's God's Verse 16.

Tomorrow, go down against them.

They will surely show up for the fight, and you'll find them at the end of the brook before the wilderness of Jarel.

You will not need to fight in this battle.

Position yourselves.

Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.

Who is with you? Oh, Jerusalem and Jerusalem.

Oh, Jah and Jerusalem.

Do not fear or be dis or be dismayed tomorrow.

Go out against him.

For the Lord is with you.

Look up at me.

I'm going in and outta scripture.

Think about this.

Now I gave you the context.

They prayed and they fasted.

They sought God.

God speaks to them and listen to the clarity of God's voice.

Listen to the distinction of how clear God is when he's speaking to those that have set aside time in prayer and fasting and made him the priority.

He's literally like, you don't have to fight.

Actually, you will go to the fight and they will be at the end of the property.

You see how detailed God is if we will position ourselves to hear what he has to say, and when you show up, he reminds him again.

You actually won't have to fight, stand still and watch what God does.

Don't be afraid even though you're showing up and they're at the end of the field because the battle simply isn't yours.

It's his.

When you and I pray and fast and give God an opportunity to speak, he will be clear about next steps, direction, healing, provision, protection, and victory.

It's just that we have to make space and give him an opportunity.

Watch now to finish his sentence.

Sometimes I will run while God is mid-sentence.

Damon, you are going to pew.

Like what if we posture ourselves long enough to let God finish his sentence? Something happens when we seek God intentionally and we're praying and we're set aside the thing that we would desire, and then God begins to speak.

God speaks so clearly and God's not, there's no confusion, but there is something where he does say in the natural.

Your enemy still needs to see your face.

Like the thing that's been a thorn in your side.

Show up y'all.

One of my favorite movies is Rocky.

I was watching Rocky three.

Him and Clubber Lane played by Mr.

T.

Mr.

T had been kicking his butt because Rocky got a little complace.

Rocky enjoyed the championship.

He enjoyed the benefits of the championship and kind of instead of training as a fighter, he was just showing up to the fight without putting in the work.

So clever, beat him down.

Sound familiar to us spiritually.

Sometimes you go in what used to be the encounter you had with God, so you show up and next thing you know you getting your behind kick, right? So I mean, club just destroys him.

But then he goes back to a familiar face and Apollo who's like, you got to find that eye of the tiger rock.

You gotta find that eye of the tiger rock.

So watch, by the time Rocky steps in the ring with Clubber Lang this time, oh, he knows that Clubber is about to get clubbed.

Do you know what I'm saying? So watch this.

Clubber steps up in front of him.

I already beat him down and this is what he says.

He says, I'm gonna bus you up.

That's in church.

Talking about Rocky, this watch.

Now this was Rocky's response 'cause he had already put in the work with Apollo.

I'm gonna bust you up and Rocky looks at me.

He goes, go for it.

You don't want none of this.

What if we show up to the fight? And your enemy's like, ha ha, ha, I'm gonna bus you up.

But because you know that the fight's not yours, you're like, go for it.

Oh man, how many of y'all gonna go home and watch Rocky three? Come on.

Y'all know, y'all go check it out.

And then you gonna be like, this is the horrible movie, but it's gotta mean something to you like.

God's on our side and he needs me to show up.

Well then why don't you go ahead and go against him? Do you know what happens when you can look your enemy in the face and watch its butt get kicked? Because I'm gonna show you what happens as they had a front row seat and they were like, go for it.

But they didn't say, go for it.

They praised God.

Let's keep going.

Says, do not fear verse 17 or be dismayed tomorrow.

You'll go out against him.

For the Lord your God is with you.

And Pha bowed his head and his face to the ground and all of Judah and all of the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord and worshiped the Lord based on what he had promised.

Then the Levites and the children of the Caite stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.

Like they didn't even keep it quiet.

God's gonna do it, so we're gonna make as much noise as we can.

So they rose early in the morning and went out of the wilderness to Akah.

And as they went out, this is what Jehosaphat said, he stood and said, here, OO, Judah, and you inhabit himself Jerusalem.

Believe in the Lord your God, and you will be established.

Believe his pro, his prophets, and you shall prosper.

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who would sing to the Lord and who would praise the beauty of his holiness.

And as they went out before the army, they were singing, praise the Lord for his mercy endures forever.

Now, how many of y'all know that that's backwards? How many of y'all look, how many of y'all noticed that the appraisers went out before the fighters? Not backwards.

Wouldn't you wanna fi? Wouldn't you wanna fight behind the armed warriors? But Jasper's like, Hey, we already got the promise.

We gonna show up.

So what are we gonna do? Just in case we a little tempted? I don't know if he said that, but just how I'm thinking about it.

Just in case anybody's tempted to fight on their own.

Praise is gonna go first.

Warriors, get back in the back.

We're gonna praise our way.

We're gonna watch what God does.

Sometimes you might wanna throw hands, but he'd be like, alright, lemme get praise in the way.

Yeah, praise will block all of my natural action.

So praise.

Go lead the way.

Like out of him, he's like, let's praise God.

We already know what he said, so let's praise God for what he's did.

Now, verse 22.

Now, when they began to sing, we talk about this last week, we don't know whether it was on the first note.

Did they get a whole line out, but when they began to sing, look at what the Lord does when you and I step into the ring and we're like, go for it.

The Lord said, ambushes against the people of am.

Amen.

Moab, Mount Seer who had come against you, they watch now and they were defeated.

Go for it.

Can you imagine God showing up for you? You getting a watch? It reminds me of Psalms 23.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemy.

Man, Lord, when I let you do it, I just get to spectate.

Anything can happen when you and I set aside intentional time of prayer and fasting.

Let's now take some notes, write this down, and it may or may not be in your notes, but prayer should be our first response, not our last resort.

We've said that before.

Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort, and fasting needs to become a permanent part of our spiritual lifestyle.

Fasting should become a permanent part of our spiritual lifestyle.

It should be.

It should be something that we pull off the shelf when we need to hear from God, when we need to make that decision, when we need God to step in, it should be a part of our spiritual discipline.

When our self tries to get in the way, and we know that we're starting to drift from God, what if we say, God, I'm gonna set aside.

This thing that I desire so that I can hear your voice so clear.

God, I need to know what you wanna say, what you wanna do in this season.

What if prayer became our first response, not our last resort, but fasting became a part of our life? Fasting by definition, it should be on your notes of fill in the blank.

It means to abstain from the physical thing that gratifies us so that we can encounter God in a greater way spiritually.

Here's the thing, you can pray.

And not fast, but you cannot fast without prayer.

That's called a diet.

It's called a diet.

That was me preparing that piece of meat.

I was dieting until dinner.

Thank you, Brent, for the challenge.

Like you can pray and not fast, but we bring, uh, prayer with fasting and we watch God move.

We set aside the thing that we desire so that God, I can encounter you more.

Why might we fast? We might fast 'cause we've got a burden.

We need guidance.

We need God to show up in our health.

We need power from God.

Our needs need to be met.

Deliverance, all of those things are in scripture where God shows up when people are prayed and fast.

We fast watch now to humble ourselves before God.

That would be a purpose of fasting.

God, we need to humble ourselves before you.

We fast so that we can align our heart to him.

We fast because literally, God, we wanna see you prove yourself faithful.

When I encourage you to read Second Chronicles, Phat literally goes through God's resume, through God's promises and reminds God of his faithfulness, and he says, listen, we don't know what the outcome will be, but we know our eyes are on you.

Yeah, fasting aligns us to what is on God's heart.

Write this down.

Fasting is expected.

It's, it's, it's, it's expected of the Christ follower.

It's expected of the Christ follower In Matthew chapter six, Jesus says this in verse five, and when you pray, don't be like the hypocrites.

It's expected that we would.

It's not a if it's a, when you communicate with God, prayer is intentional communication with the Father.

It is intentional communication with God, but it's also strategic warfare with the enemy.

Little did the people of Israel know that while they were boasting about God, God was setting an ambush for their enemy.

Sometimes we don't even need to focus on the enemy's attacks if we can just boast about our God.

What if we made him bigger and let him step in the ring and be like, go for it when you pray.

Then it goes in verse 16.

Jesus says more.

Well, when you fast, don't be like the hiccups who look like they're fasting.

He's like, put some lotion on your face.

Says that put oil go outta your house.

What you're doing in private, watch God work when you step on the scene and he blesses you and rewards you.

They prayed and fasted in secret.

And what did God do on full display? Bust him up.

Right? So, but again, if you're like me, sometimes I'm ready to go.

I'm trying to figure it out.

I'm gonna make this thing happen.

You ever say that? Gotta make this thing happen.

No.

What if we pray and fast and we wait long enough so that God can complete his sentence, and then when the enemy's like, oh, you back again.

I'm gonna bust you up.

What are we gonna say? Go for it.

Why? Because God already spoke.

And here's the other thing that I mentioned.

I want you to read it.

Literally when PHA was praying, he literally says this, God, they're coming against your possession to steal the land that you gave.

I said this last week, the health that you and I possess is his new, the New Testaments.

Talk about having the mind of Christ.

So if the enemy's coming and attacking your mind, wait a second, Lord, when I gave my life to you and you begin to work on me, remember we talked about the process, salvation, but then transformation and sanctification happens when God starts working in you and you feel like you keep going back to the old thing.

That's the enemy going, don't you come back? So that when I throw a blow, you'll be like Rocky, when Clever Lang beat him the first time.

Well, you can't fight for yourself.

But man, when you and I start recharging our spirit, the enemy wants nothing.

So it's when we pray, when we fast and we said that there was four focuses of our fast, because we look at Second Chronicles and we realize that PHA and the people did some things that we shouldn't just go, you know what, let's follow.

If they encountered God, so shall we.

So the first thing that we said is during this prayer and fasting, that we were gonna fast and pray with a passion to know him and to hear his voice city place.

I felt really challenged personally, and as you're writing it down, I'm gonna challenge us corporately to not focus this fast on results because what if God doesn't do it in 21 days? If you're like me.

He must not have been the thing he desired for me.

Oh, he's late again.

God, why? You didn't show up.

You showed up for them.

Have you ever done that? God, I want my prayer, my praise report to be celebrated.

God, I want the promotion.

Well, what if we actually just said, we're praying and fasting to just find him? It's wanna find you.

You're the priority, so I wanna find you.

I don't need the results from your hand.

I just need you.

Psalm 73 says, but it was good for me to draw near to God.

I have put my trust.

Everything that I have, I put in him.

Therefore, I would declare all of your works.

It was good for me to run to him.

He didn't need to run to me.

I ran to him.

I know his love chases me down.

We sing about it, but I'm gonna chase him down with my love and my affection.

It's good for me to just decide, Lord, I'm coming to you, and that's it.

Second thing, we're, we're fa uh, fasting and praying from a position of victory.

Fasting and praying from a position of victory.

Stand still.

And see the salvation of the Lord.

You don't need to fight.

The battle isn't yours.

It's his.

You've already won.

But show up.

Look your enemy in the face and then watch God work.

You and I have already been given victory.

In fact, this is what it says in one Corinthians 15, but thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

You already have victory.

You woke up in victory even if all Hades was was breaking out around you, you woke up victorious.

You are a victor.

You are not a victim.

You are victorious in Christ.

Jesus say, I am victorious.

The enemy can't do nothing about it.

You are victorious.

Number three, we said that we were going to fast and pray because we wanted this kind of power and this kind of faith.

I'm gonna break it down in a minute.

Like we want the faith that when God shows us something that seems impossible, that we will remain steadfast.

That our trust is 100% him.

Oh, I ran after you, and my trust is 100% in you.

Therefore, I'm to declare all of your work.

Psalm 73, I'm standing in victory.

God, you always calls us to triumph.

Okay, let's go.

So I'm gonna believe you and I'm gonna fast and pray for this kind of faith, God, because there are situations that I will walk in and I wanna be able to look at 'em boldly and say, God's for me, God's got me.

Or maybe I'm walking into a situation where someone else needs to experience you.

God, do that in me.

In in the book of Matthew chapter 17, there was a, a boy who was throwing himself in the fire and.

Matthew 17 · chapter mention

The dad took him to the disciples and the disciples couldn't do anything.

So he was like, you know what? Let me go to the ultimate source.

Jesus, can you help? And Jesus looks at the disciples later 'cause they want to debrief.

How come we couldn't do it? Jesus was like, Hey, a mountain may be this big, but if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could speak to the mountain and tell it to get outta the way because nothing is impossible.

Anything can happen if you have this level.

But then he goes.

But this kind of faith and power requires what's already expected.

Prayer and fasting.

Like y y'all, there are things that God will empower us to speak life to, but we, but we have to spend a little bit more time in focus, prayer and fasting, y'all.

All right, and number four, this is where we were last week.

And this is how we're gonna end.

We said that we were gonna fast.

Y'all can all play, y'all can all play we'll fast and pray from an attitude of gratitude and praise.

Like he's already given us the victory.

And so in the verses that we read, God told him to stand still and to see what God does.

But pha ad-libs the instruction.

Phat begins to pour from his heart.

Well, since God done told us the victory, we should have a pregame celebration.

And then during the fight we gonna continue to celebrate.

Like what if you and I praised God and we, or we prayed and we fasted with an attitude of gratitude already.

And just go, God, you already gave us the victory.

So you know what? I'm gonna praise you for the victory.

Praise the Lord, because his mercy endures forever.

And do you know what I need the sopranos.

You got the nose.

Praise the Lord for his mercy endures forever.

Altos.

Praise the Lord.

First mercy, tenors.

Are you ready? Three part harmony.

Get behind the singers.

We are going into the next season of victory with praise and gratitude.

Everybody tune it up, everybody get going.

Everybody sing along because God's already done it.

So let's just show him how grateful we are for watch now what he said he would do, what he said he will do, and when they began.

The Lord said an ambush.

Second Corinthians two 14 says, now, thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph, y'all.

I realize that gratitude gives us a few things.

Write these down.

When we have an attitude of gratitude, where we go, God, I'm so grateful that you spoke to my situation and you told me that I was gonna come out victim.

Words like, that's the reason why we love studying scripture.

Some of the small groups last, last semester did our, our, our, our search of scripture study.

Together.

We did it together and we realized that, man, if we would just spend a few more moments in God's word, and maybe that one verse requires us to read three verses earlier so that we can get the full context.

If we can get the full context and our faith begins to grow and.

God's word begins to speak and we leave situations with more faith than what we had before.

See, if you and I can start seeing what God sees based on what he says, then our watch, write this down.

Our perspective begins to change.

See, when we have an attitude of gratitude, it shifts our perspective to what? He ain't doing nothing for me.

Like he ain't done nothing for me.

I keep asking.

He ain't done nothing for me.

Meanwhile, you and I are inhaling the exhale.

You got outta your car without a limp.

Got an amazing roof over your head, but sometimes we complain.

I still live in this apartment knowing I want a house.

I cannot get a house.

Meanwhile, we walk past the person on the side of the road as we get into our car.

That's just a push button.

And so we get mad at God.

God, you're not doing anything for me.

But what if we just take a moment and we realize what he is doing, and we will do that.

It'll give us a different level of perspective.

Last week I offered to you write down one thing God is doing for you that you can give him credit for every single day, and you will end up with at least 365 things that he's done so that if you get to the end of the year and he didn't do the grand.

His resume increased.

He's qualified.

Can he please finish his sentence, y'all? All right.

Like our perspective changes.

Psalms 1 36 says, gift thanks to the Lord.

Perspective for he's good, his faithful love.

E endures forever.

Watch now.

Perspective.

Give thanks.

To the God of all Gods nobody like him, his love endures forever.

Perspective change.

Give thanks to the Lord of Lords for his faithful love endured forever.

Verse four, give thanks for He alone does mighty miracles perspective change? He is always doing something good.

Second thing, an attitude of gratitude repositions our heart in physical actions to glorify God.

It repositions our heart and our physical actions to glorify God.

The Bible says that pha, after hearing what? What the word of the Lord was spoken to him, he immediately bowed, face down.

It was like, God, my action is here.

All of the people went from, okay, God, let's go to a place of worship.

And then I got the victory, but I don't just take it.

He then turns his action into praise to where he's like, God, you gonna see my physical action? We gonna make some noise.

We going to sing.

So not only will I receive your promise, but I'm gonna put on display with my actions.

My heart, I'm gonna put on display the actions with my praise.

That's why on Sunday, you and I, sometimes it can look like the team is just singing the songs over and over again.

Really what it is, it's an onboard ramp for you and I to join Worship.

Leading is not a spectator sport.

It's leading us into where they've already gone, the preparation on Wednesday nights and throughout the weeks.

It's so that you and I can get in the presence of God.

So when you and I come, it's not because they are singing to us, it's, they're going, Hey, here's the onboard ramp song number one.

Okay, just got outta your car.

Song number two, come on, join in with us.

Song number three, take off.

So you and I bring our actions and our aligned heart.

Number three, it gives us a moment where God heals us.

A moment where God heals us.

'cause even in the second one where we reposition our heart, Sean preached a message about the 10 lepers last year.

And, and we talked about in that how the, the one came back beyond just the first level of praise.

It says that the 10 lepers came.

Jesus says, go show yourself to the priest.

One comes back and starts going crazy.

Thank you so much at his feet.

God, you're so worthy.

Thank you Lord Jesus for what you did.

And Jesus looked at him and was like, is the only one that came back? Is this foreigner? Like the only one that came back is the Samaritan.

Who's actually at conflict with the people of Israel.

The only one who recognized who I am, that recognized that what is done that should, that, that requires a little bit more is the one that came back.

And this is what Jesus says.

Jesus looks at him and he says, go your way, my man.

You completely whole.

Like when we have a attitude adjustment, uh, into prayer and to praise our perspective, changes our hearts realigned.

And then God goes, now let me make, make you whole.

Like we never know what attitude of gratitude does.

And then verse four, Alion, come on up.
