  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. >> I think we just say merry Christmas. I

  3. don't know the rules, but merry

  4. Christmas.

  5. >> Uh if you're new here, my name is Mati

  6. Scaring. I'm the preaching and teaching

  7. pastor here. And if I didn't get to meet

  8. you during our welcome time, I'd love to

  9. meet you after church. But glad you're

  10. here. Glad everyone's here. Hope you had

  11. a fantastic Christmas and uh a New

  12. Year's as well coming up. Um, so if

  13. you're new and have never signed a

  14. welcome card, you could go ahead and do

  15. that. We do have a gift card for you if

  16. you just pass your welcome card in at

  17. the connection table afterwards. I think

  18. it's like to Dutch Bros or something

  19. like that. It it changes sometimes, but

  20. um uh we also use them as prayer

  21. requests and there are plenty of things

  22. that uh we have prayer requests about

  23. during the Christmas season as well. So

  24. uh we pray for those every single week

  25. and we don't even stop at all during the

  26. holidays. So if you turn a prayer

  27. request in and are comfortable putting

  28. your name on it, we will be praying for

  29. you. So you can use them in that way as

  30. well. They're basically just a way for

  31. us to connect with you and for you to

  32. get more connected with the church. Like

  33. if you have questions about things, uh

  34. that's one way to start. So um normally

  35. we are just in a book study and that

  36. would be Galatians right now and we're

  37. going to be restarting that uh right in

  38. the new year as well. and then we'll

  39. finish it in January and we'll be into

  40. uh the next book study. The elders need

  41. to meet and discuss. Uh we like to pray

  42. about what book God would have us go

  43. through next. And uh that's really our

  44. rhythm, just verse byvere teaching uh

  45. through book by book kind of thing. Um

  46. but there are some Sundays where there's

  47. a break in the action because we have

  48. these Bible studies. we call them

  49. disciplehip communities and they're in

  50. homes and we're studying through

  51. Galatians and we do that in advance of

  52. the sermon and that will start back up

  53. on the first Wednesday um of the new

  54. year. Um, but we take a break during

  55. some of the Wednesdays of the holidays.

  56. And so that's why we take a break from

  57. the study so as not to disrupt that

  58. rhythm, which leaves Sundays open. And

  59. as you know, if you've been here for a

  60. while, I've been going through um the

  61. basics of mentorship on those Sundays um

  62. because we want to develop a mentorship

  63. uh uh ministry. And I say mentorship

  64. because it's a modern word where people

  65. understand what you mean. It's a person

  66. uh in in Christian terms, a person

  67. taking some responsibility for some time

  68. for the spiritual development of

  69. another. That another word for that

  70. biblically is disciplehip. But

  71. disciplehip has many different forms. Uh

  72. preaching is disciplehip. Uh studying

  73. just the word of God directly and being

  74. taught by Jesus through his spirit in

  75. his word, that's also disciplehip. Small

  76. group discussion of scripture, that's

  77. disciplehip. So when it's more

  78. one-on-one or one-on- two, uh that's

  79. still disciplehip, but it's a more

  80. focused type. So that's the only reason

  81. we're calling it mentorship. Um but I

  82. thought I'd just say that. But uh today

  83. I I felt redirected these last um this

  84. last week or two from doing a mentorship

  85. sermon. That's what I was I am

  86. interested in doing. That's what I was

  87. planning on doing but felt directed by

  88. redirected by the spirit and probably in

  89. part as a result of uh events happening

  90. in my own life. Um but also because of

  91. things that uh people in this church and

  92. other Christians have been talking to me

  93. about. Uh the topic of today's sermon is

  94. going to be anxiety and how we actually

  95. deal with it. Uh which seems like a good

  96. thing to be talking about going into a

  97. new year. Um but it's it's not just

  98. going to be a topical sermon. We're

  99. we're going to be walking through a

  100. passage verse by verse, a famous one uh

  101. about what Jesus has to say in Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  102. chapter 6 starting in verse 25 and

  103. finishing in 34. And we'll look at up

  104. we'll look at another couple passages

  105. about anxiety. Um but especially for

  106. those of you new, you might not know

  107. that um we only just recently completed

  108. a move. So we sold a house, moved to

  109. another house. Most of the boxes are

  110. either still in storage in our garage or

  111. in a pod that will be arriving at our

  112. house at some point. And so we're

  113. unboxing everything and all of that

  114. during during Christmas. It's just the

  115. way the worked out when our house sold

  116. and when the contingency sale went

  117. through. And so there's all kinds of

  118. stressors associated with that. Uh if

  119. you've moved recently, you probably

  120. viscerally viscerally remember the

  121. stressors that that come from that. Um

  122. I've I've realized through experience in

  123. my life that something's usually not

  124. particularly stressful stressful if you

  125. don't care about it. Right? If you care

  126. about it then uh then stress uh often

  127. times especially if if something becomes

  128. a lot more difficult that you care about

  129. then you might experience certain

  130. stresses. And one response to those

  131. kinds of stressors is anxiety. So, I

  132. want to tell you about something that I

  133. really care about that was threatened

  134. that I had to allow God to deal with my

  135. anxiety about. So, you know, I really

  136. love hunting. Um, I'm not my I grew up

  137. to a missionary family in Germany and

  138. hunting there just wasn't really a

  139. thing. Um, and so it wasn't like I was

  140. hunting from a young young age. It's

  141. only about a four years ago that I got

  142. into it. And now I've been able to take

  143. some of my kids along and even my wife.

  144. Uh she actually shot her first buck this

  145. season. Um I I I've got some time in the

  146. sermon. It's it's going to be a

  147. relatively short sermon because I know

  148. there's kids involved, but so first time

  149. my wife shot a rifle. She thought shot

  150. three rounds and then I looked at her

  151. and she was in tears because it was so

  152. scary for her. So I thought, let's just

  153. stop. Let's just be done. Um shooting a

  154. rifle. It's it's a 6.5 Creedmore and

  155. it's a youth rifle. Not not even a whole

  156. lot of kick. So, I thought it would be

  157. safe and I kind of trained her on how to

  158. do it. I didn't think we were in in

  159. unsafe conditions, but it scared her.

  160. So, I thought, let's just stop. But I

  161. had asked her earlier in the season,

  162. would you come with me on the last day

  163. of hunting season to to hunt? And she

  164. said, yes, she would. And I said, well,

  165. now that you experienced that, do you

  166. still want to? And she's like, well,

  167. just don't force me to shoot. I was

  168. like, okay. Wasn't going to anyway, but

  169. sure. No pressure at all. I even said,

  170. do you still want to take the rifle

  171. along? She goes, sure, we can take it. I

  172. can make a decision at the time. So, now

  173. that's three shots through a rifle

  174. lifetime. Right. We go on the last day

  175. of hunting season. My angle's kind of

  176. blocked. And she's, you know, whisper

  177. screaming at me, "There's a buck.

  178. There's a buck." And I'm like, "Do you

  179. want to shoot?" And she says, "I'll do

  180. it." And her fourth shot is a buck. So

  181. every hunter I have said, I've told that

  182. to, they're like, "You're living the

  183. dream." Yeah. You want to see a picture?

  184. I I don't have it up. I wasn't even

  185. planning on telling a story, but anyway.

  186. So then, so the my my son filled his

  187. tag, I filled my tag, and my wife filled

  188. my t her tag. And so we had these three

  189. bucks. And I found all of the other

  190. butchers were full. And uh uh I

  191. accidentally called Clark's Meats uh in

  192. uh I thought that they were doing custom

  193. meats and stuff and they said, "No, uh

  194. we don't do that, but I've got a guy for

  195. you." And so I found a private butcher

  196. and he's actually quite reasonably

  197. priced. And so I I took it to him and he

  198. did the butchering. So it costs money to

  199. hunt. It costs money to have your your

  200. uh meat butchered. Even if you're doing

  201. it yourself, it costs some money because

  202. you got to get the tools and different

  203. things like that and good knives. So

  204. anyway, then I bought a freezer, a

  205. standing freezer, 20 cubic feet freezer

  206. and uh an older one, but it seemed just

  207. fine and was working great and put all

  208. the meat in there after I got it back

  209. from the butcher. And then we moved that

  210. freezer to the new house. And then we

  211. were having we had do a fondue dinner

  212. for Christmas Eve. where you put little,

  213. you know, skewers of meat in in oil and

  214. it cooks it and it's great fun. And my

  215. wife asked me, "Hey, will you defrost

  216. some of the backstrap?" That's like some

  217. of the best of the steak of the deer.

  218. And I was like, I'd love to do that. And

  219. um I thought, well, I'll do it like the

  220. night before. So, uh we've been staying

  221. up late unboxing stuff. So, around

  222. 11:30, I'm like, "Okay, it's time to go

  223. to bed." Oh, yeah. I forgot to take the

  224. back strap back. I go to the freezer and

  225. everything's unthawing.

  226. If you're a hunter and you I that's

  227. never happened to me yet, but till now

  228. you know how you feel about that. Okay.

  229. So, I'm I'm like, "Oh, no. Crisis. We

  230. got to do something." And so, uh I'm

  231. trying to figure out, you know, did it

  232. get unplugged? What's going on?

  233. Troubleshooting. I still haven't figured

  234. it out. It was only taking it to 30° and

  235. the meat was was thawing. And so, I look

  236. it up. It's like, if you let your meat

  237. get above 40°, you basically have to

  238. throw it out. So, I'm like, "Okay, it

  239. doesn't seem like it has to. Maybe the

  240. meat quality will decrease if you

  241. refreeze it. I don't know. But I'm just

  242. trying to get everything reffrozen.

  243. Taking stuff out that we can replace and

  244. that's not that expensive. Other

  245. freezers. And then finally on uh I don't

  246. even know what the day that happened,

  247. but Friday morning, a a a good friend of

  248. mine uh gave me a freezer. He wasn't

  249. using a standing freezer and I was able

  250. to I pretty sure I saved all the meat,

  251. right? But you can imagine, especially

  252. at 11:30, I was actually asking God

  253. like, "Why now? I'm so tired. This is

  254. extreme. what's going on. But I'd

  255. already started reading and studying

  256. this passage for the sermon and been

  257. thinking about it. Listen to what the

  258. very first verse says here in verse 25

  259. of chapter 6 of Matthew. Therefore, I

  260. tell you, do not be anxious about your

  261. life, what you will eat or what you will

  262. drink, nor about your body, what you

  263. will put on. Is not life more than food

  264. and the body more than clothing?

  265. Right? And so I knew I mean he just

  266. brought that scripture to mind and I

  267. knew immediately like okay thanks for

  268. the introduction for my sermon. This is

  269. rough but I already know what you're

  270. doing. God will use certain events to

  271. expose the types of places where we need

  272. to trust him and anxiety that comes from

  273. us and it develops our faith for him to

  274. do that. Um it was no accident that it

  275. happened that way. I know God pre-plans

  276. all things and so I knew what I need to

  277. do. was like, "Well, here's the

  278. interesting thing, though. Did they have

  279. freezers back then?" They didn't have

  280. freezers back then. And I've got a 20

  281. cubit cubic uh feet freezer full of

  282. meat. And then I have two more fridges

  283. that also have freezers in them. And

  284. now, although one's broken down, I have

  285. a fourth freezer. Do you know what never

  286. even crossed my mind in terms of anxiety

  287. about the meat? Oh, no. I won't be able

  288. to feed my family if this No, I will.

  289. I'll I'll be fine. The only thought was

  290. this is such a waste. I put so much

  291. effort into this and there's money in it

  292. as well and that would be terrible to

  293. lose it all. That would not be fun or

  294. exciting. Especially now that Isaiah and

  295. and Christine like there's something if

  296. you've never hunted before or maybe if

  297. you fish, it's kind of fun eating your

  298. own fish that you caught. There's like a

  299. more special relationship to the food,

  300. right? So, but I never thought, oh no,

  301. we won't have food. Do you know how many

  302. food security safety nets we have as

  303. Americans? They didn't have freezers.

  304. They had barns. Jesus talks about a barn

  305. here, gathering food into barns, but

  306. they didn't have that. So, here I am.

  307. And it's not about anxiety about a lack

  308. of fear. It's it's actually an issue of

  309. abundance.

  310. Worry about losing dramatic

  311. overabundance.

  312. Right? So everything Jesus says is to a

  313. people group in a time and an age in

  314. ancient near east where they don't have

  315. that kind of abundance.

  316. They are being oppressively taxed by the

  317. Romans to the point where there there

  318. are plenty of pe it wasn't like the the

  319. middle class at that time just could run

  320. to McDonald's and get food if they

  321. didn't have any their house, you know.

  322. So, so their worry was oftenimes

  323. actually about what they would eat

  324. tomorrow. We're not sure we'll have food

  325. for each other, for our family, for

  326. ourselves, for our kids, for our babies.

  327. So, far greater

  328. stressor on anxiety regarding food than

  329. anything I'm experiencing. Actually kind

  330. of laughed here. Am I experiencing

  331. anxiety about food? And this is the

  332. passage we're talking about, but it's

  333. about an overabundance,

  334. you know, uh, back then they might have

  335. a tunic or garment or one and it'd be

  336. special to have two.

  337. Ladies, have you ever experienced

  338. anxiety because you have too many

  339. dresses and you don't know what you're

  340. going to wear that day and that's like

  341. what you're worrying about? That that

  342. happens. I mean, you know, I actually

  343. couldn't find pants the other day right

  344. before coming to sermon. So, maybe there

  345. are situations where, yeah, I I'm not

  346. sure I have the clothes I need to wear

  347. for this event. Uh, but still, we just

  348. have so much more back then. And I

  349. wanted to use that story to highlight

  350. that because Jesus is talking to people

  351. who have reasonable, legitimate reasons

  352. to be concerned about the future. and

  353. that concern, if you want to call it

  354. anxiety or fear or worry or what

  355. whatever it is in that category, um

  356. Jesus has something to say to us about

  357. that. And there's lots of kids in the

  358. service as well. And kids will

  359. experience fears. I don't know, some of

  360. you may be listening to this, you're

  361. like, I don't know what anxiety is, but

  362. I think you probably know what being

  363. scared about something is or or fear uh

  364. or or worrying about something or maybe

  365. especially on Christmas, you worried you

  366. might not get the gift that you really

  367. wanted and then you'd feel sad. So, you

  368. know what it's like to worry about

  369. stuff. If you're in school, worrying

  370. about a test and and not doing well cuz

  371. you want want to do well or worrying

  372. about maybe not having friends in school

  373. and not being accepted by your peers or

  374. or worry about a sporting event. You

  375. know, my boys just played uh contact

  376. football for their time and uh football

  377. can be scary for adults and and children

  378. alike. And so, you can experience

  379. anxiety, performance anxiety before the

  380. games. you're worried that you might not

  381. perform very well. Um, and I I thought

  382. it was kind of interesting. We're having

  383. a special service, so a lot of the kids,

  384. if not all of them, are in the service.

  385. Uh, and that's great. And um, but I

  386. realized the sermon on the mount would

  387. have had kids listening, too. Sermon of

  388. the mount would have had kids listening,

  389. too. And the way that Jesus talks about

  390. this is not particularly difficult to

  391. understand. You don't actually have to

  392. be an adult to understand what's being

  393. talked about here. There will be some

  394. concepts we discuss that are probably

  395. beyond what uh children easily

  396. understand. But again um who can't

  397. understand what Jesus says. Therefore I

  398. tell you do not be anxious about your

  399. life.

  400. Do not uh or what you will eat or what

  401. you will drink nor about the body or

  402. what you will put on. Is not life more

  403. than food and the body more than

  404. clothing? And the obvious implied answer

  405. is yes it is. Look at the birds of the

  406. air. They neither sow nor reap nor

  407. gather into barns

  408. and yet your heavenly father feeds them.

  409. Are you not of more of value than them?

  410. Our society is quickly forgetting that

  411. human beings are more valuable to God

  412. than animals. Um but it's still pretty

  413. ingrained in our society. Like when if a

  414. sparrow falls to the ground and dies,

  415. there's no investigation,

  416. right? That's not true for human beings.

  417. We still naturally know that God has

  418. placed a far greater value in

  419. imagebearers than in animals. That does

  420. not mean that animals aren't valuable to

  421. God. This is saying he cares for them.

  422. They are. But what Jesus is saying is if

  423. he cares for wild birds that they're not

  424. like getting their food at Costco, you

  425. know, then how much more is he going to

  426. care for you?

  427. And you know, you know the answer, a lot

  428. more. And on top of it, Jesus says in

  429. verse 27, "And which of you by being

  430. anxious can add a single hour to a span

  431. of life." So if your life if it's like

  432. worry about life situations, I think

  433. husbands will worry about their careers

  434. and their jobs. Why? Because we care

  435. about providing for your family, right?

  436. You care. You should. So again, when you

  437. care and then that thing that you care

  438. about maybe gets threatened, getting

  439. fired, getting let go, being on a job

  440. search, watching your savings dwindle as

  441. you're trying to find a new job, feeling

  442. like the current job doesn't really pay

  443. enough and hoping that your performance

  444. will merit merit a promotion and then

  445. you don't get a promotion and not going

  446. to be up for promotion. all those kinds

  447. of things for husbands, you know, or or

  448. anybody that is is working at a job has

  449. experienced those kind of things. Or if

  450. you're a mother and you're staying home

  451. and raising your kids, worrying about

  452. the your children's behavior, worry

  453. about how like, am I raising them right?

  454. Am I doing enough? Worry about how

  455. cleanly the house is, you know? And and

  456. feeling like, am I a bad mom if I'm not

  457. doing enough? I know. I mean, I'm

  458. married to a young mother and so I

  459. talked to her about these things. Um,

  460. she's our children's director, by the

  461. way, and I want to thank Emily and

  462. Christine and anyone involved in the

  463. children's ministry for putting on that

  464. uh little children's choir. That was

  465. that was awesome. So, thank you very

  466. much. I know everybody enjoyed that.

  467. Yeah, you can clap for that. [applause]

  468. But moms are facing all kinds of anxiety

  469. press uh stressors and and worries and

  470. because you care.

  471. So if you could do something to stop

  472. yourself from caring, maybe there

  473. wouldn't be as much temptation uh to

  474. deal with your anxiety apart from the

  475. Lord. But the temptation exists. The

  476. anxiety is real. And it's not always

  477. about some kind of crazy phantom fear.

  478. But sometimes, you know, according to

  479. Jesus, this anxiety is really related to

  480. the future. But it's also related to

  481. past in a sense that if you've had a

  482. past negative experience, maybe in

  483. raising your children, maybe in

  484. marriage, maybe in your job, and then

  485. you see some of the very same kinds of

  486. happenings coming together that happened

  487. before that bad experience, you might

  488. start experiencing anxiety where you're

  489. kind of naturally predicting what's

  490. going to happen based on your past

  491. experience. And so you're anxious about

  492. that.

  493. And Jesus has something to say about

  494. anxiety in the future today as well. But

  495. we all know you can't add anything to

  496. your life if if it's just about life in

  497. general. Sometimes either I'm not

  498. self-aware enough and I work on growing

  499. in self-awareness, which is painful

  500. because usually it takes other people

  501. telling you things you're not aware of

  502. and they're not always fun to hear, you

  503. know. So self-awareness growth can be

  504. but but sometimes you're not even really

  505. aware and maybe it's not even related to

  506. that. It's just like it's hidden from

  507. you why you're feeling anxious. Have you

  508. ever felt anxious and not known why you

  509. don't know? You're trying you're praying

  510. about it. You think about I don't know

  511. why I'm feeling this droning sense of

  512. like anxiety or dread or fear or

  513. concern. And that can be that can be

  514. difficult. That might be anxiety that's

  515. related to to life in general.

  516. somehow things are not really going as

  517. you want them to to go or you somewhere

  518. deep in your mind and heart are thinking

  519. things should be going differently and

  520. they don't seem to be shaping up the

  521. right way and so there's this nebulous

  522. kind of anxiety we'll talk about a

  523. little bit later in the sermon there can

  524. be another reason for why you're not

  525. able to identify your anxiety and its

  526. enemy tactic and behavior by enemy I

  527. mean the devil and so there are times

  528. where the reason why you can't identify

  529. it is because it's a stealth type of

  530. attack. We'll talk about that. And why

  531. verse 18 verse 28, why are you anxious

  532. about clothing that that seems to maybe

  533. hit even harder when we have an

  534. abundance of clothing?

  535. You know, if you're back then, you might

  536. say, "Well, I only have one piece of

  537. clothing and it's getting torn and we

  538. can't afford another one."

  539. And whether it's about worry about being

  540. cold or just being exposed to the public

  541. or whatever it is, uh Jesus is so why

  542. why are you anxious about clothing?

  543. Consider the liies of the field how they

  544. grow. They neither toil nor spin. I

  545. don't know what your favorite lily is or

  546. even if you have a favorite lily, but um

  547. my wife's favorite lily is the stargazer

  548. lily. You ever look closely at a

  549. stargazer lily?

  550. They're absolutely beautiful and God c

  551. they're intricate, too. Same with

  552. orchids. There's these little patterns

  553. in them. You're like, "Wow." And the the

  554. how delicately they're fashioned and yet

  555. still they're they're just

  556. they're amazing. Jesus says they're

  557. they're so amazing. He compares them to

  558. Solomon who had a lot of glory.

  559. Literally tons of gold. If I don't

  560. remember the exact number, but if you um

  561. if you calculate just how much wealth uh

  562. Solomon had, he'd be wealthier now than

  563. the wealthiest man alive, which I think

  564. is Elon Musk at like I don't know

  565. something like 500 billion. Predicted to

  566. be at a trillion by 2028.

  567. Solen see Solomon seems to you know if

  568. you look at what what he had would be

  569. worth today more than that. a lot of

  570. glory,

  571. a lot of artistic embellishments and

  572. architectural designs that would have

  573. been breathtaking.

  574. So I tell you, even Solomon in all his

  575. glory was not arrayed like one of these.

  576. God knows the beauty that he's fashioned

  577. into his creation intricately and

  578. gloriously and wonderfully. And you look

  579. at one of these liies and like that's

  580. how he clothed that. And that's a lily.

  581. But if God so clothe the grass of the

  582. field, which today is alive, and

  583. tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  584. will he not much more clothe you,

  585. oh you of little faith?

  586. And you know the answer, of course, if

  587. he cares for birds and liies,

  588. and surely we should realize liies are

  589. not as valuable as birds, and birds are

  590. not as valuable as human beings to God.

  591. They all have their value, but obviously

  592. in that comparison, the human value is

  593. one of eternal value with an eternal

  594. soul,

  595. not like a lily.

  596. And yet God closed Lily like this. How

  597. much how much more is he going to care

  598. for you? This it's the same thing. You

  599. can trust him, but you're not. And so

  600. you're experiencing all this untreated

  601. anxiety. And Jesus clearly connects that

  602. to a faith problem. It's a faith

  603. problem. You see that, right? He says,

  604. "Oh, you of little faith."

  605. I'll tell you this partly as a

  606. disclaimer, but I've received feedback

  607. on sermons of of anxiety where something

  608. that I've said has offended somebody.

  609. And I have

  610. no intent to offend you about anxiety.

  611. But I do have an intent to be faithful

  612. to what the word of God is saying. And

  613. you can see it with your own saying,

  614. your own eyes. The problem is a faith

  615. problem in relationship to anxiety.

  616. that matters.

  617. And these anxiety disease are so

  618. relatable. It's not like he's saying

  619. that if it's like not about food or

  620. drink, um what you're going to wear,

  621. what you're going to eat, then then it's

  622. okay. He pretty much do not be anxious

  623. about your life includes every type of

  624. anxiety you could experience, right? You

  625. see that? I see you nodding your heads.

  626. And Jesus is saying it's a it's a faith

  627. problem that's happening here.

  628. Well, presumably if it's a faith

  629. problem, then the solution would also be

  630. a faith solution, right? A trusting God

  631. kind of solution.

  632. So, what does Jesus say there? Do

  633. therefore do not be anxious. I think the

  634. offense of what I say is uh related to

  635. misunderstandings about um medical

  636. solutions to anxiety. So, I'll be

  637. balanced and careful, but I do have some

  638. views and some warnings about that. And

  639. um

  640. uh if you have concerns about what I'm

  641. going to say, just come talk to me. Uh

  642. but it's possible that why you might

  643. being be being offended is that what

  644. you're actually doing in relationship to

  645. anxiety is sinful, is disobedient. If

  646. Jesus gives a command, therefore, do not

  647. be anxious,

  648. but you're not willing to obey that.

  649. Anytime we're not obeying Christ,

  650. anytime we're not obeying God's word,

  651. that's that's called a sin. You know,

  652. our world would never call our society

  653. in general in terms of secular view is

  654. not calling anxiety a sin. But but

  655. anything that is not of faith is so

  656. faith allows you to deal with these

  657. kinds of life related anxieties. And

  658. Jesus is saying that it's like a a

  659. diminished faith that doesn't. And he's

  660. making a giving us a command here.

  661. Therefore, do not be anxious,

  662. saying, "What shall we eat or what shall

  663. we drink or what shall we wear?" So, we

  664. can sin in that area. I've confessed

  665. times like, "God, I didn't really trust

  666. you, so I didn't deal with that. I

  667. didn't really trust you in this thing,

  668. so I didn't deal with that stress the

  669. right way." You know, um, and that

  670. definitely happened during this move.

  671. You get so stressed that your normal

  672. faculties faculties with which you

  673. contain your emotions or things just

  674. worn thin. You all know the feeling,

  675. right? Then something frustrating

  676. happens between you and your wife or

  677. between you and a kid and you say

  678. something that you didn't even mean, but

  679. you felt at the time was totally

  680. justified. It's hurtful to them, a

  681. cutting word, a mean word, an untoward

  682. word, not encouraging at all.

  683. Definitely not aligned with the way that

  684. Christ would have you speak at that

  685. moment. Certainly not part of the fruit

  686. of the spirit of self-control, right?

  687. God will definitely bring you to the end

  688. of your own faculties and show you where

  689. your own efforts end and where you have

  690. to trust him in terms of entrusting your

  691. heart and trusting the Holy Spirit and

  692. drawing on him to exhibit self-control

  693. when all of your own abilities have

  694. ended. He'll do that because that's

  695. where all the faith growth is, you know.

  696. So you could just confess that, yeah,

  697. I've been trusting, you know, I'm

  698. experiencing all this anxiety that I

  699. wouldn't have to if I was trusting and

  700. trusting my heart to you about that.

  701. But he he compares what he's talking

  702. about to how Gentiles live their lives.

  703. For Gentiles seek after all these

  704. things, and your heavenly father knows

  705. that you need them. So Jesus is speaking

  706. to Jews here and he's comparing the way

  707. that Jews ought to behave in

  708. relationship to anxiety, entrusting

  709. their their uh anxieties to the Lord and

  710. having him deal with them compared to

  711. Gentiles. In this case, he's not talking

  712. about believing Gentiles. He's talking

  713. about unbelieving Gentiles. We've been

  714. spending a bunch of time in Galatians

  715. talking about how there's neither Jew

  716. nor Gentile. Now, it's just by faith in

  717. Christ that you receive the Holy Spirit

  718. and that you're justified. It's not by

  719. your effort in the law. That's not

  720. really what is being talked about here.

  721. It it would be like it'd be like if he

  722. was talking to Christians and uh and

  723. basically all of us are Gentiles unless

  724. you know that your ancestry is Jewish in

  725. this case. But uh he'd be saying, well,

  726. don't don't relate to to anxiety the way

  727. the world does. That's what he's saying

  728. here. So, we are to be differentiated as

  729. God's people in the way that we deal

  730. with our anxiety compared to the word. I

  731. see you guys nodding. you. It's not

  732. doesn't even take any more explanation.

  733. You know, you're good Bible students.

  734. You know these things. For Gentiles seek

  735. after all these things. And your

  736. heavenly father knows that you need them

  737. all. He knows that you need them all.

  738. Before we go to 33 and 34, I want to go

  739. to a couple other passages that also

  740. talk about anxiety. And I'm not even

  741. getting close to um

  742. to exhausting all the passages about it.

  743. There are so many. I'm just going to a

  744. couple. Like I said, the I'm keeping the

  745. sermon short today. Kids are in it. And

  746. um I I don't think anxiety is that

  747. complicated of an issue. I think when we

  748. over complicate it, uh we diminish

  749. conviction. I'll I'll explain what I

  750. mean by that in a moment. But let's go

  751. to Isaiah 8 11 through 13 in our Bible

  752. read through that we do as a church. Um

  753. it's it's recently that we've been ina

  754. in Isaiah. So Isaiah 8:11-13

    Isaiah 8:11–13

  755. says this, "For the Lord uh yeah, for

  756. the Lord spoke thus to me with his

  757. strong hand upon me and warned me not to

  758. walk in the way of this people, saying,

  759. Do not call conspiracy all that this

  760. people calls conspiracy, and do not fear

  761. what they fear, nor be in dread.

  762. But the Lord of hosts, him shall you

  763. honor as holy. Let him be your fear and

  764. let him be your dread.

  765. So, you're going to find all over God's

  766. word. We're going to stop here and talk

  767. about this idea of conspiracy because

  768. one of the things that is causing

  769. anxiety in the hearts of the ancient

  770. Israelites that God is sending Isaiah to

  771. go and prophesy to is what all the world

  772. around them is calling conspiracy. wars

  773. and rumors of wars and you know you

  774. you'll even get crazy things like the

  775. sky is falling you know oh the world

  776. remember acid rain you know oh you're

  777. going to you know it's it's ruining

  778. everything a lot of I think climate

  779. change alarmism is like that and I'm not

  780. even going to go into that cuz that's

  781. it's just a lot of our young our youth

  782. especially is worried that the world's

  783. going to end as a result of human

  784. activity the Bible makes very clear that

  785. the world ends as a result of God's

  786. activity

  787. That one's already settled. We know the

  788. end. God's shown us that in scripture.

  789. So, it's it's not that. But you there's

  790. all kinds of conspiracies going around

  791. that we're not supposed to say are

  792. conspiracies just like everybody else

  793. says conspiracy. Okay? I'm aware of

  794. that. I think you're aware of that

  795. reading scripture. But if you got your

  796. head in conspiracies, um conspiracy

  797. theory is different than conspiracy,

  798. right? If if if a conspiracy is proven,

  799. it's not a theory anymore.

  800. But it's a theory when it hasn't really

  801. been proven beyond a shadow of doubt to

  802. the general public, so to speak. I think

  803. that's probably the only way to

  804. differentiate between those things. It

  805. just has to be overwhelming evidence

  806. that it's actually a conspiracy. And

  807. we're nobody's saying conspiracies don't

  808. happen. So, it's not as though looking

  809. at potential conspiracy theories are all

  810. just phantom fears. Some of those could

  811. actually be conspiracy and would be

  812. reasonable to be afraid of them if they

  813. are.

  814. Okay. So, so at other times you've got

  815. your head in the future and our flash

  816. tends to predict mostly doom and gloom

  817. results, doesn't it? It's not like, oh,

  818. the future is going to be so bright and

  819. I don't need to have any worries. That's

  820. not what happens. Am I going to be able

  821. to make my mortgage payments? Doesn't

  822. look like it.

  823. Are my children going to have the life

  824. that I've been hoping for them? It's not

  825. looking like it. And then you have

  826. anxiety about predicting future outcomes

  827. God hasn't told you are going to be one

  828. way or the other, but you know there's

  829. plenty of future outcomes that were

  830. negative that you experienced in the

  831. past future. Like you're in the past

  832. like I kind of was able to predict that

  833. this would happen and then it would

  834. happen it was negative. So you start

  835. trusting your own powers of prediction

  836. in the future and then you predict

  837. something negative that's going to

  838. happen and it never even happens but you

  839. experience a bunch of anxiety up until

  840. it didn't happen when when it didn't

  841. happen. That's what I call being anxious

  842. about a phantom fear. Phantom fear. God

  843. hasn't given us the power to predict the

  844. future.

  845. Even when he gave his prophets like

  846. Isaiah absolute certainty about what was

  847. going to happen,

  848. how would you, if you had been a friend

  849. of Isaiah, advise him to deal with the

  850. kinds of anxiety that would come from

  851. knowing that God was certainly going to

  852. send Israel off into exile in dreadful

  853. ways.

  854. So even when you actually know the

  855. future for certain, the answer about

  856. anxiety is the same. entrust it to the

  857. Lord. Okay.

  858. So, let's go to first Peter chapter 5

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  859. and look what he says about this concept

  860. of anxiety. Peter was an apostle, walked

  861. directly with the Lord, knew the Lord

  862. very closely. And it says in 1 Peter 5,

  863. chapter uh chapter 5 verse 5, actually

  864. starting in verse 6, humble yourselves

  865. therefore under the mighty hand of God

  866. so that at the proper time he may exalt

  867. you, casting all your anxieties on him

  868. because he cares for you. He heard Jesus

  869. teaching. He knows what Jesus said.

  870. Jesus said God cares for you, too. More

  871. than liies, more than birds, he takes

  872. care of them. You don't think he's going

  873. to take care of you, he cares for you.

  874. You can trust him with your anxiety.

  875. Notice how the all how though in um

  876. relationship to the solution of anxiety,

  877. Peter brings in the word humility.

  878. Pride

  879. will convince you and deceive you in

  880. your own heart. Our own pride. I can

  881. deal with this myself.

  882. It's really easy to think, well, I can

  883. clear my my freezer out and I can solve

  884. this problem myself, right? All the

  885. while just worried sick about losing all

  886. this stuff that's valuable to me, you

  887. know? Or I could say, God,

  888. honestly, first of all, let me just get

  889. out of the way the fact that I'm

  890. actually deeply concerned about losing

  891. this deer. And even the worst case

  892. scenario, if I do, we'll be fine. That's

  893. that wasn't even a worry about me. For

  894. me, it was just more the pain of losing

  895. something I'd worked really hard for and

  896. was excited about. But I just prayed and

  897. asked him, "Please help me find a

  898. solution to refreeze this deer." I

  899. didn't know, by the way, the deer had to

  900. be at a certain temperature to arrest

  901. all bacterial growth. I thought, "It's

  902. frozen. It's frozen." So, when I

  903. researched like it's not cold enough at

  904. 30°, which is below freezing, to

  905. actually arrest all bacterial growth. I

  906. didn't even know to check my freezer to

  907. make sure it was like at zero. I just

  908. thought, well, it's freezing. It seems

  909. good. I know better now. You know,

  910. maybe that's helpful for you. If you're

  911. considering freezing something, you

  912. might want to check your freezer and see

  913. if it's actually cold enough to arrest

  914. bacterial growth. You can lose your food

  915. if it's not. That's neither here nor

  916. there. However, those are the kinds of

  917. totally relatable life worries that we

  918. all have. And if it's for kids, you

  919. know, you you get hungry and you're

  920. like, "Mommy, I want to eat." Right?

  921. Hungry, angry, lonely, tired. Stressors,

  922. hangry. Halt is what hungry, angry,

  923. lonely, tired has the acronym for.

  924. Mentor of mine once said that. Halt.

  925. What does he mean halt? There's a

  926. warning there when you're hungry. Angry,

  927. lonely, tired. To make sure that you're

  928. allowing God to be in control of those

  929. emotions.

  930. So part of the solution to anxiety is

  931. humbling ourselves and entrusting it to

  932. someone else who can actually deal with

  933. it and God's the only one that can. So

  934. yeah, pride and anxiety related. You

  935. you're seeing it right here. It's not me

  936. saying it's God saying it. I agree with

  937. it though. So I know that sometimes the

  938. reason why I'm experience anxiety that

  939. continues rather than it's resolved is

  940. because I'm being prideful about it. I

  941. can do it myself.

  942. I can do it myself. I don't need help. I

  943. don't need I don't need his help.

  944. Well, yeah, we do with this. It's it's a

  945. spiritual problem that has a spiritual

  946. solution. Let's go to one last passage

  947. about anxiety here before um I talk to

  948. you about my my concern about

  949. pharmaceutical solutions to anxiety.

  950. We'll talk about that in a moment. I

  951. want to show you some statistics and

  952. things to just warn you about um being

  953. careful around those kinds of things.

  954. However, here is Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  955. This is Paul teaching. He says in

  956. Philippians chapter 4:5, "Let your

  957. reasonable reasonleness be known to

  958. everyone. The Lord is at hand. Do not be

  959. anxious about anything, but in

  960. everything by prayer and supplication

  961. with thanksgiving, let your requests be

  962. made known to God."

  963. Okay, let's just review for a moment.

  964. Jesus said it's a function of faith. Per

  965. brings in the idea that there's a

  966. function of humility that needs to be

  967. present if your anxiety is going to be

  968. deal dealt with faithfully. And here

  969. Paul talks about prayer being involved

  970. as well.

  971. We might also just add that Jesus said

  972. you got to you got to trust that God

  973. cares. Okay, that's the faith he's

  974. talking about. Trust that God cares,

  975. humility, and prayer.

  976. And and here's the result. If you have

  977. those things present, especially prayer.

  978. Verse seven, and the peace of God, the

  979. exact opposite of anxiety, which

  980. surpasses all understanding, will guard

  981. your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

  982. Surpasses all understanding. Why?

  983. Because you can experience supernatural

  984. peace without the circumstances that

  985. were causing you to be anxious having

  986. changed. In other words, nothing's

  987. changed, but I'm experiencing not

  988. anxiety, but rather peace. It doesn't

  989. really make sense. I don't understand.

  990. It's supernatural. Okay,

  991. I don't need an answer to this. It's

  992. more of a rhetorical question, but in

  993. your heart, can we agree

  994. that God's solution to our anxiety

  995. surpasses understanding?

  996. It actually says it surpasses all

  997. understanding. Okay.

  998. So, we ought to expect

  999. that God is going to deal with our

1000. anxiety with his supernatural power

1001. and that we receive that kind of thing

1002. by faith by entrusting it to him. You're

1003. all following. However, that's not what

1004. the world believes. And the Bible has us

1005. uh not wanting to behave in attitude and

1006. act or in thought exactly like the world

  1007. does.

1008. The world because it doesn't have faith

1009. by definition when compared to those who

  1010. believe

1011. does not believe that there is such a

1012. thing as a supernatural solution to your

  1013. anxiety.

1014. And that brings me to talk about

  1015. pharmaceuticals. It's understandable

1016. then to realize that doctors who do not

1017. believe don't think there are

1018. supernatural solutions to your anxiety

  1019. either.

1020. Some doctors might even mock that. It's

1021. like like flying spaghetti monster

1022. nonsense, you know? It's just it's just

  1023. fanciful thinking. It doesn't that's

  1024. that's crazy.

1025. Maybe in a form of psychosis to think

1026. that uh that there's this supernatural

1027. solution. So that's not even an option

1028. for them. However, it's the primary

1029. option for Christians according to God.

  1030. It's the thing generally.

1031. So you have to consider that. You have

1032. to consider that that unless your doctor

1033. is a mature and trustworthy Christian uh

1034. he or she they don't even think there is

1035. such a thing as a supernatural uh

1036. solution to anxiety. But we definitely

1037. ought to you just saw it with your own

1038. words. Jesus believes that and teach

1039. that and he is God and his apostles and

1040. the people he chose to write scripture

1041. teach that and since it was God telling

1042. what to write therefore God teaches

  1043. that.

1044. So consider those things. Consider the

1045. fact that you're not always receiving

1046. advice from someone who even agrees with

1047. Jesus on the solution to anxiety. That's

1048. important. Secondly, I want to show you

1049. some statistics. And because I had

1050. recently read do not call conspiracy

1051. everything these people call conspiracy.

1052. Um I had to be sure that what I was

1053. sharing with you wasn't a conspiracy. So

1054. I did uh what I believe to be some

1055. legitimate research. And so I will cite

1056. some of my sources here. Um let me look

1057. and find the actual statistics that I

1058. wanted to uh tell you about. Um just one

1059. second here. I took about a bunch of

1060. pictures of this. Okay. Here here we go.

1061. All right. And so, uh, this is from the,

  1062. uh, Harvard, um,

1063. uh, I think it was a medical journal,

1064. but I have my resources and we'll

1065. probably post them on the on things, but

  1066. it's Harvard research. Okay? And here's

1067. what it says. The research used data

1068. from 2014 to 2016. And what they were

1069. researching was whether or not doctors

1070. get paid by pharmaceutical companies uh

1071. to prescribe um anti-anxiety medication.

1072. Okay? If they get paid more for

1073. prescribing certain ones and how much

1074. and that kind of thing. Open payments

1075. and Medicare Part D prescriber

1076. databases. That's where the research was

1077. focused on which are both administered

1078. by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid

  1079. Services. A university Oh, this one's

1080. the University of Minnesota. I have one.

  1081. This other one's Harvard. A University

1082. of Minnesota researcher found that a

1083. brand that brandame versions of

1084. gabapentin such as Lica, Galiss, and

1085. Horizon were nearly twice as likely to

1086. be prescribed when physicians receive

  1087. financial support from phaceutical

1088. companies. So, not only do they

1089. definitely receive financial support to

1090. subscribe these things, uh, but they're

1091. also way more likely to prescribe them

  1092. when they are.

1093. It's not difficult to draw your own

1094. conclusions regarding that kind of uh

1095. that kind of deal. Now, gabapentin um I

1096. happen to know quite a bit about these

1097. because these are prescribed to deal

1098. with nerve pain until you can figure out

1099. what's really wrong. And because of

1100. football injuries, I've had some spinal

1101. nerve pain. Some of it feels almost

1102. debilitating, like I can't stand up. And

1103. so, uh I was actually allergic to

1104. gabapentin. Um, and I never took the

1105. brand names of these, not for any

1106. reason, but just wasn't prescribed that.

1107. Um, but I I didn't actually know at the

1108. time that gabapentin is actually an uh

1109. it's an off label anti-anxiety that gets

1110. prescribed all the time for

  1111. anti-anxiety.

1112. So, what's being said here is that

  1113. doctors get paid

1114. more if they prescribe brandname

  1115. versions of this anti-anxiety

1116. medication. Whether they do that for

  1117. nerve pain or anti-anxiety, that's

  1118. that's significant. They have a

1119. financial incentive for prescribing this

1120. more. That really ought not to be

  1121. happening. That's definitely a conflict

1122. of interest. There's no doubt in my mind

1123. about that. However, did you know that

1124. almost all anti-depressants are uh

1125. central nervous system depressants or

  1126. suppressants? Um, they're tranquilizers.

1127. You you can look up this research

1128. yourself, find it, and nothing I'm

1129. saying requires like significant study

1130. in the area of psychiatry. And I say

  1131. freely I'm not a psychiatrist and so I

1132. don't try to dabble in areas where I'm

1133. way outside of my expertise or

1134. authority. But these are not that right.

1135. You can just look at look this up. Um so

1136. this is this is the study from uh from

  1137. Harvard. Research indicates doctors

1138. receive industry payments are more

1139. likely to prescribe paying company drugs

1140. including brandame anxiety meds. Um,

1141. also I don't know if you knew this but

1142. the top major uh pharmaceutical

1143. companies earned 684 billion dollars in

1144. one year. It's more than that now.

1145. However, that's more than the vast

1146. majority of nation's GDP, gross domestic

  1147. product.

1148. Lot of money involved. A lot a lot a lot

1149. of money involved. Another statistics,

1150. this is one actually ones that I was

1151. trying to find from the very beginning.

1152. Um, from 2001 to 2008, prescriptions of

1153. anti- anxiety medications of any kind

  1154. increased by 4,000%.

1155. Remember, the housing crisis wasn't

1156. until like it started before this, but

1157. like it really got bad in September of

  1158. 2028. So that's actually basically

  1159. before this.

  1160. >> What did I say?

  1161. >> 28.

  1162. >> 28. Sorry. 2008. Yeah. I didn't even

1163. hear my say say it wrong, but from 2001,

1164. just in case I said it wrong earlier,

  1165. 2001 to 2008, prescriptions of

  1166. anti-anxiety medications spiked by 400%.

  1167. And that's before the 2008, basically

1168. they would only be gathering a couple

1169. months of data from September to

1170. December when it really got bad. Also,

1171. in 2020, there was a 130% spike for for

1172. reasons not unknown. there's this global

  1173. pandemic and initially

1174. it was I think entirely reasonable to be

1175. deeply concerned because we don't even

1176. know but then after that came became

1177. clear to me that the media was profiting

1178. on just screaming from the rooftops how

1179. dangerous it is and people became

1180. absolutely terrified to the point where

1181. they worried about toilet paper

1182. had Jesus taught the masses and had the

1183. parable happened during the co era

  1184. >> [laughter]

1185. >> You know what he would have said about

  1186. toilet paper too?

1187. Like it would have certainly made the

  1188. kids laugh.

1189. So you have to consider what am I

1190. saying? Never trust doctors. Be just

1191. skeptical and and and jaded. But no, no,

1192. I'm thankful. I So one of the um drugs

1193. that I am prescribed and that I do take

1194. for uh the nerve pain is called

1195. Flexeril. You can look it up. of

  1196. cyclloensziprne. Cycllochenziprne is

1197. also a central nervous system depressant

1198. and you've heard me talk about it. I

1199. only take it for a limited amount of

1200. time because it really helps calm down

1201. the nerve pain just to help me to

1202. function and and I am planning on

1203. figuring out do I have a hernated disc?

1204. What's going on? I'm going to get an MRI

1205. and look at the actual root cause of the

1206. thing. Um but I've told you how I can't

1207. take it on Saturdays before Sundays. I I

1208. oftenimes really can't be taking it

1209. while I'm studying for any kind of

1210. teaching because it just fogs my mind.

1211. Okay. Did you know that 50% of people

  1212. that are prescribed anti-anxiety

1213. medication report a blunting of

  1214. emotions?

1215. In this same study, uh it talked about,

1216. and this to me was sort of obvious, but

1217. it was still really interesting. Once it

1218. was said, I was like, well, yeah, of

1219. course, but it was still really

1220. interesting. The central nervous system

  1221. depresses these tranquilizers. They

  1222. don't differentiate between your

1223. negative emotion and your positive

1224. emotion, do they? They just blunt them

  1225. all. Really powerful medication.

1226. On top of it, it's important to note

1227. they don't cure anxiety. They treat

  1228. anxiety,

1229. which means they're not actually fixing

1230. the problem if you go off of them.

1231. It stands to reason, especially in the

1232. first months or so as that your system

1233. is clearing this narcotic, uh, that you

1234. may end up feeling worse than you did

1235. before you were on them. Side effects. I

1236. I don't actually think maybe some of the

  1237. things statistically about the

  1238. pharmaceutical companies that I'm

1239. talking about is uh is controversial,

1240. but most of the stuff I'm saying is just

1241. like be careful. Powerful side effects.

1242. I have a hard time thinking my my and

1243. and when verbally I have a pretty sharp

1244. mind. It has its limitations and

1245. mathematics and different things like

1246. that. So, but verbally like I understand

1247. things. I can sp respond articulately

1248. and and quickly. And so, I'm used to my

1249. mind working quick, not like a dialup

1250. modem, you know? And my wife's asking me

1251. normal questions and I'm like thinking

  1252. hard to answer them.

1253. Thinking hard to answer them. Let's go

1254. to one more passage. I didn't give it to

1255. the team. Uh but this is Romans and some

1256. of you know this by Romans 12 and and

1257. what does it say? It says here I appeal

1258. to you therefore brothers by the mercies

1259. of God be present your bodies as a

1260. living sacrifice holy and acceptable to

1261. God which is your spiritual worship. Do

1262. not be conformed to this world, but be

1263. transformed by the renewal of your mind,

1264. that by testing you may discern what is

1265. the will of God, what is good and

1266. acceptable and perfect. For by the grace

1267. of God given to me, I say to everyone

1268. among you, not to think of himself more

1269. highly than he ought to think, but to

1270. think with sober judgment according to

1271. the measure of faith that God has

1272. assigned. So, we know being conformed to

1273. the world has a negative effect on our

1274. ability to discern God's will. Whereas,

1275. being transformed by the renewal of your

1276. mind allows you by testing to discern

1277. his will. And we also know we're told

1278. right afterwards to think sobermindedly

1279. in terms of our own degree of faith.

1280. Okay? Be self-aware, be sober minded.

1281. Okay? Let me ask you this. If your mind

1282. is totally blunted in emotion both

1283. positively and negatively and you are

1284. experiencing some of these intense

1285. pretty much unavoidable side effects of

1286. of different types of tranquilizers,

  1287. I wouldn't say that it's like a lack of

1288. sobermindness as to the degree of being

  1289. drunk. I don't feel drunk on

1290. cyclopensziprne. That's not my point.

1291. But it certainly blunts a bunch of my

  1292. faculties.

1293. You ought to consider that.

1294. If you put that together with the fact

  1295. that I mean,

1296. how is a non-Christian doctor going to

1297. resist the temptation to prescribe

1298. something he doesn't see any other

1299. supernatural solution for anyway? This

1300. might help this person and so I'm also

1301. going to make more money for it, which

1302. means I can buy my kids the switches

1303. that I probably wasn't going to be able

1304. to pay off more of my debt. It's so much

1305. temptation to prescribe it when the

1306. person doesn't really need it. You can

1307. see how you could convince yourself of

1308. that. So, what I'm saying is no, don't

1309. just automatically go in with a chip on

1310. your shoulder in a medical system. Like,

1311. I'm very thankful for nurses. My wife uh

1312. has been a registered nurse and um and

1313. and there's nurses in this congregation

1314. I'm close friends with and medical

  1315. professionals. After Debbie Eisenhut,

1316. our evangelist and surgeon from uh who

1317. who serves in Cameroon at Mabingo

1318. Baptist Hospital, she came and talked to

1319. us about how thankful we ought to be for

1320. all the surgeons we have. The average

1321. person there will die of something they

1322. don't even need to die of just because

1323. they don't have the surgeons.

1324. There is a common grace that God has

1325. given us through the medical system. But

  1326. that doesn't mean there isn't

  1327. corruption.

1328. Is there any way around understanding

1329. that God looks at pharmaceutical

1330. companies paying doctors to use their

1331. product as anything else than a bribe?

1332. That's what that is, right? And that

1333. affects the outcome. Well, it's got to

1334. be one of the variables for I think for

1335. any reasonable person to understand why

  1336. there's these 400% spikes in

  1337. prescriptions.

1338. A lot of people are making a lot of

1339. money. That's not conspiracy. Just look

1340. it up. You can find this recorded in um

1341. in Harvard journals in Minnesota college

1342. research journals and like I said I will

1343. make sure the links are in the uh

1344. YouTube video after this as well. So

1345. commonly accepted and I actually kind of

1346. think in the category of conspiracy

1347. theory or conspiracy not conspiracy

1348. theory. You got to be careful. That's

1349. all I'm saying. Be careful. I think that

1350. a usage of a drug of that power um from

1351. an elers's perspective, we would just

1352. discern each case individually. If you

1353. feel like you need some spiritual

1354. advice, should I do this? Should I not?

1355. Should I transition off? We would love

1356. to come and advise you as elders and

1357. shepherds, not as psychiatrists. Not my

  1358. point. Okay.

1359. My personal view, my kid that my kids

1360. aren't getting touched by these hardcore

1361. drugs, right? I'd rather shelter them

1362. from whatever outside stress that's

1363. happening, but I don't want them during

1364. their developmental age. Let me let me

1365. tell you a real short story. Had a

1366. friend got uh addicted to prescription

  1367. um I think they're opioids,

1368. painkillers, right? He got addicted when

1369. he was about 14. 14 is still like wet

1370. paint, wet cement kind of developmental

  1371. stage for a kid's mind emotionally,

1372. right? Well, these blunt your emotions.

1373. So to some degree they also limit the

1374. kind of emotional development that would

  1375. happen

1376. probably even for adults but especially

1377. in that developmental phase. Now he's

  1378. 29. I've gotten to know him and he's

1379. attending a church that I'm in and he

1380. asked me to mentor and we talked to him.

1381. He said, "Hey, something you need to

  1382. understand even though I'm 29, I'm

1383. sometimes barely more mature than a

  1384. 14-year-old." And I laughed because it

1385. was like I thought it was sort of like

1386. an extreme humble thing to say. And he

1387. goes, "No, I'm being serious." And I'm

1388. like, "Well, what do you mean? Is is

1389. there some kind of developmental thing?"

1390. He goes, "Well, not like a disorder or

1391. anything, but I got addicted to these

  1392. painkillers." And between 14 and 28,

1393. basically, um, doctors told me I just

  1394. stopped developing emotionally because

  1395. of it.

  1396. Stopped developing emotionally because

  1397. of it.

1398. Man, when it comes to kids, you ought to

  1399. be careful

1400. around narcotics. even if they're

  1401. medically prescribed and and

1402. administered like the side effects. You

1403. got to weigh the cost. Got to weigh the

  1404. cost.

  1405. I don't I don't want to mess with that

1406. kind of stuff. Not even for myself, you

1407. know. I actually told the doctor this

1408. this time around and he and he gave me a

1409. a different drug that just didn't have

1410. such extreme side effects. So, you can

1411. consider that regarding nerve pain,

1412. right? But also, it'd be hypocrisy to

1413. say that I never take advantage of the

  1414. modern uh um pharmaceutical

1415. technologies, you know, that's not what

1416. I mean. But be careful. Be careful. And

1417. again, can any of us really deny going

1418. back to our passage that what Jesus has

1419. to say about anxiety is that it's a

1420. spiritual issue. So, let's put Mark

1421. Matthew up again. I lost my spot here.

1422. Get right back to it and let's conclude.

1423. What does Jesus say is the answer? He

1424. says, "The command is therefore do not

1425. be anxious, saying, what shall we eat or

1426. what shall we drink or what shall we

1427. wear?" Do not do that. What should you

1428. do instead? Verse 33, "But seek first

1429. the kingdom of God and his

1430. righteousness, and all these things

1431. shall be added to you. Therefore, do not

1432. be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow

1433. will be anxious for itself. Sufficient

1434. for the day is its own trouble."

1435. Kind of bluntly stated, keep your head

1436. out of the future. It's where all these

1437. phantom anxieties but maybe also

1438. reasonably predicted anxieties like it's

1439. it your that's not what your faith is

1440. meant to handle. I I qualify that there

1441. are some future things where are to have

1442. faith for and God talks about them and

1443. trust him about. But what he's saying is

1444. that sufficient for the day is its own

1445. trouble and stressors that could cause

1446. you anxieties and those at least are

1447. limited and you can entrust them to God

1448. at that present time. A major solution

1449. to your anxiety is is to to take those

1450. future thoughts captive. Get your mind

1451. out of the future. If you've got a

1452. strong mind, some pretty significant

1453. computing power. You recognize patterns.

1454. You're probably better at predicting

1455. kinds of outcomes. And you may have

1456. experienced that you're pretty good at

1457. figuring out what's actually going to

1458. happen. And more often than not, it

1459. actually does. We've already talked

1460. about when a prophet is told with

1461. absolute clarity and certainty what's

1462. going to happen. He also [cough] has to

1463. cast anxiety on on God because he and

  1464. it's a function of humility.

1465. So you don't say well yeah but I know

1466. this happens. Prophet knew it better

  1467. than anybody

1468. and still has to relinquish his anxiety.

1469. Jesus also says that we need to put

1470. God's agenda first and and and what does

1471. he say and all these things will be

1472. added to you. Why? Because he cares more

1473. about you than he does about birds and

1474. liies. And look at how he treats them.

1475. But you might say, "Well, yeah, but I

1476. know Christians starve to death.

1477. Sometimes they get persecuted and starve

  1478. to death."

1479. As if Jesus doesn't know that, right?

  1480. That's he's not saying there's a formula

1481. here that no one will experience future

1482. pain. He's saying that regardless of

1483. what the future holds, let's go to

1484. Jeremiah 29 because God's um words about

1485. the future are not like our flesh words

1486. about the future. For I know the plans I

1487. have for you, declares the Lord, plans

1488. for welfare and not for evil to give you

  1489. a future and a hope.

1490. But God also sometimes has designs for

1491. suffering where the afflictions we

1492. experience in this earth are meant for

  1493. his glory.

1494. And I believe that that exclusively in

1495. your new nature, the nature that's

1496. submitted to the Holy Spirit and

1497. recreated, that new heart, not that

1498. heart of stone, that heart actually

1499. desires to glorify God no matter what

  1500. the cost.

1501. So the solution to fearing things that

1502. you know can actually happen even to

1503. Christians is also still just trusting

  1504. the Lord with it.

1505. So in conclusion here, let's go ahead

1506. and put up the main point.

1507. Jesus says trusting God today is the

1508. solution for our anxiety. Pretty simple

1509. point. I think you've seen it from

  1510. scripture.

1511. And what if what if trusting God sooner

1512. with your anxiety, with more amounts of

  1513. your anxiety,

1514. uh is what God is calling you to do for

1515. 2026? What if that was part of your New

1516. Year's resolutions? and even something

1517. you get a jump on now by just confessing

1518. the places where you haven't really been

1519. trusting God with those stressors.

1520. God's plan for your anxiety is peace

1521. that surpasses understanding. Let me

1522. pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for

1523. this word. I think it's a good one for

1524. our hearts to be prepared for whatever

  1525. may happen in 2026.

1526. I pray Lord that you would

1527. that you would bless our faith that

1528. you'd strengthen our trust and that we

1529. would experience freedom from anxiety.

1530. It presses our hearts. I pray that we'd

1531. experience the kind of freedom that

1532. results in peace that surpasses

1533. understanding which guards our hearts in

  1534. Christ Jesus.

1535. I pray that we'd have victories in this

1536. area. And Lord, if if right now we need

1537. to come to your table and [music]

  1538. confess

1539. and even repent of the places where

1540. we've been trying to control out

1541. ourselves, then make that clear by your

  1542. spirit.

1543. I pray these things in Jesus' name.

  1544. Amen.
