  1. dates to remember. There's one date we

  2. are having a men's meeting on uh March

  3. 14th. Uh you'll get an email about that.

  4. That's another way also through the

  5. welcome cards you can get signed up and

  6. subscribe to our e- bulletin. And we

  7. don't spam your inbox. It's less than

  8. once a month that those uh emails go

  9. out, but then you can get information

  10. about these kinds of dates and any

  11. information you need for whereabouts and

  12. time and things like that. So, I don't

  13. think I have any other announcements.

  14. I'm going to go ahead and pray and we

  15. can get right into Esther 1 verse 1-9.

    Esther 1:1–9

  16. Heavenly Father, thank you for your

  17. word. Thank you for the books that you

  18. inspired to be written to encourage us,

  19. to convict us, to build up our faith. uh

  20. they're so relevant and no matter where

  21. we go in scripture when we consider how

  22. it applies to our life, it's just

  23. amazing how many applications there are

  24. for us to grow in the grace and

  25. knowledge of Jesus Christ to be

  26. transformed in our own character. Uh so

  27. I pray that your word would have its way

  28. in our hearts and as you've promised

  29. that it would not return to you empty. I

  30. pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.

  31. I want to tell you a story about

  32. something that my football player

  33. buddies and I did. And uh uh the way

  34. that I'm going to tell this story is

  35. going to sound like I'm bragging because

  36. that's what we did. And so I'm just

  37. going to tell you the story like we used

  38. to think about it. Um but it is a story

  39. about vain glory. I'll define vain glory

  40. in a moment, but it's a story about a

  41. bunch of football players seeking to

  42. make themselves look great and a

  43. specific way to do it in front of tens

  44. of thousands of people. And we used to

  45. love to do it and that is what I lived

  46. my life for initially until I was about

  47. 24 and God humbled me. And uh I don't

  48. know how many of you have like a movie

  49. like Gladiator as our as your favorite

  50. movie. Gladiator is one of my favorite

  51. movies. And there's this scene um he

  52. basically gets enslaved to become a

  53. gladiator and uh really has no interest

  54. in slaughtering people. Um but he's very

  55. angry about what's happened to him. His

  56. wife and his son are murdered. And so

  57. instead of just getting slaughtered in

  58. the arena, he fights back and he's a

  59. general. Uh used to be a general in the

  60. Roman army. And so highly skilled in

  61. tactics and warfare and handtohand

  62. combat with swords and different

  63. weapons. And so he just wins these

  64. battles and there's this famous scene

  65. where he just kills every opponent and

  66. the cloud is roaring with applause and

  67. he says, "Are you not entertained?" Like

  68. that. And we thought that was the

  69. coolest thing ever. Um Cole, if you're

  70. watching this, you're going to laugh. Uh

  71. Cole Smith is a good friend of mine. And

  72. uh I actually um when I repented, told

  73. him what had happened in my life and how

  74. God had humbled me. And as God used that

  75. to bring him to faith, too. and he's now

  76. a deacon at a church in Springfield and

  77. uh a friend that I stay in contact with.

  78. Uh but he was the defensive end to the

  79. right of me and I was a dtackle and ever

  80. when we would make a best thing you can

  81. do as a dtackle is basically a tackle

  82. for loss. A sack is a tackle for loss

  83. but it doesn't have to be a sack. if you

  84. stop the running back, uh, you do that.

  85. And we were playing against Cal. Um, and

  86. at Cal, and you might know the name

  87. Marshon Lynch, that's the guy we're

  88. playing against 60,000 people. And the

  89. very f and we're Portland State, so

  90. they're paying us to play them kind of

  91. as a to-up game. No one expects us to

  92. win, and we didn't. But the very first

  93. play of the game, uh, Cole and I just

  94. smash Marshon Lynch and bring him down

  95. and both of us just put our hands out to

  96. the entire crowd and scream, "Are you

  97. not entertained?" We didn't plan it.

  98. Didn't plan it. It is in a way one of my

  99. favorite memories of my football time

  100. cuz we were we doubled over laughing cuz

  101. we'd both done it at the exact same We

  102. were roommates. We'd watch Gladiator the

  103. night before to get pumped up for it,

  104. you know. But there's a dark side to

  105. that story. It's funny. It's ridiculous.

  106. It was so great in front of all the Cal

  107. fans to be screaming that. And to be

  108. honest, I didn't I knew that Marshon

  109. Lynch was good, but I didn't know him as

  110. Marshon Lynch the Beast at that time.

  111. It's unbelievably hard to tackle, too.

  112. Just for fun. Little color commentary. I

  113. was uh 350 lb uh 315 lb. And my neck,

  114. you see how my ears kind of stick out?

  115. You get made fun for that. and my neck

  116. was sticking out farther than my ears.

  117. I've got pictures if you ever want to

  118. see it. That's how thick I was. Um, and

  119. the best body fat I got to was 8% body

  120. fat and that was about 2 295 lbs. So,

  121. just just a ball of muscle. I'm only 6'

  122. 6' one at best. And I laid out and hit

  123. Marshon Lynch as hard as I could and he

  124. bounced back two yards and kept running.

  125. first time that's ever happened to me.

  126. We get a good clean hit on a guy and he

  127. doesn't go down. So, he he indeed was

  128. unbelievably hard to tackle. But that's

  129. beside the point. Uh the point is that

  130. what I lived my life for was the glory

  131. of the crowd. That's not actually what

  132. Maximus and Gladiator lived his life

  133. for. He was mocking the crowd when he

  134. said, "Are you entertain? Are you not

  135. entertained?" Mocking their blood lust

  136. and what they what they wanted. um he

  137. threw his sword at the guy that was

  138. presiding over the whole thing. So, I

  139. wasn't mocking the crowd's um

  140. the crowd in that way like I was mocking

  141. the entire system of football. I was

  142. mocking their team and acting like we

  143. were greater. Look what we just did.

  144. Tackling this great running back for a

  145. loss in the first play of the game. It

  146. silenced the whole crowd. It was a great

  147. feeling. But what I was living for was

  148. my own glory. My real dream was to play

  149. in the NFL. Uh because what I wanted to

  150. was to be praised by that crowd to have

  151. that kind of glory and there is a

  152. certain kind of glory in football that

  153. football players can gain. So happens to

  154. this day in the NFL. We just got done

  155. with the Super Bowl. There's a certain

  156. type of glory to be gained in winning

  157. one of the most competitive sporting

  158. events probably in the world. Um so

  159. that's what I lived for. And I'm I'm not

  160. going to spend a bunch of time talking

  161. about my testimony today. I've mentioned

  162. that many times in the past, but God did

  163. something to humble me and as a result

  164. of that uh brought me around to a real

  165. desire in my life to live my life out

  166. for his glory, for the fame of his

  167. reputation rather than my own. Um that I

  168. don't for a second believe that I do

  169. that perfectly. And I still find not

  170. even close. I still find a lot of ways

  171. that I continue to have to humble myself

  172. and um I'm going to be talking to you

  173. guys about that also just in application

  174. to yourself. But the reason why I'm

  175. telling the story of vain glory um is

  176. that it almost destroyed my life. So in

  177. the pursuit I'll tell you one little

  178. part of my testimony. in the pursuit one

  179. of the I call a deep sin, one of the

  180. really destructive sins uh that I

  181. committed um in order to be able to

  182. continue playing football for as long as

  183. possible was taking

  184. performance-enhancing drugs. You know

  185. them as steroids. They're kind of back

  186. in the news these days for different

  187. reasons regarding like hormone therapy

  188. and some real dark stuff. But this was

  189. basically just a bunch of testosterone

  190. derivatives that allow you to recover

  191. from really hard exercise faster and

  192. build your muscle faster. Kind of like

  193. they make your body like a little mini

  194. Wolverine. There's a reason why I was

  195. 295 lbs at 8% body fat.

  196. Not really possible uh without those

  197. kinds of things. At least you'd have to

  198. be a total genetic outlier to get even

  199. close to that. Um and so I cheated

  200. because what I was seeking was my own

  201. glory. And I didn't think I would get

  202. it. I didn't think God would give it to

  203. me. I didn't think I was tall enough.

  204. And that turned out to be the case. None

  205. of the NFL scouts wanted to give a guy a

  206. chance at six foot uh 6'4 or better.

  207. Can't teach size, they used to say. And

  208. that's how part of the way that God

  209. brought that to an end. My I did

  210. everything I could, including cheating,

  211. to try to make it and didn't. And I had

  212. my whole identity wrapped up in that

  213. kind of vain glorious pursuit. And that

  214. can happen to to I was not living my

  215. life as a Christian, but that can h

  216. happen to people that were for a time

  217. living their lives as Christians and

  218. then they get stuck in what John calls

  219. the desires of the flesh in first John.

  220. We'll go there or the pride of life

  221. seeking to glorify their own

  222. reputations. And it doesn't start with

  223. some kind of elaborate premeditated plan

  224. like you know what I'm going to do with

  225. my life? I'm going to try to make myself

  226. look great to others. It starts with

  227. just one little idolatrous decision

  228. after another. If you think about what

  229. vain glory is, it's it's seeking glory

  230. in all the wrong places. In a simple

  231. definition, seeking glory in created

  232. things disconnected from God. Seeking

  233. glory in created things where the glory

  234. isn't ultimately ascribed to the Lord.

  235. And so you you know I don't know if you

  236. experience worshipful moments when you

  237. go out on a hike but uh I got into

  238. hunting not too long ago and you got

  239. into the Oregon woods and some of these

  240. um you know some of the places will have

  241. clear cuts and so you can see farther

  242. and the the fog is just hanging right

  243. over the trees and sometimes you get on

  244. a hill and you're looking above the fog

  245. at the tips of the trees and you get

  246. below and you see it's just kind of a

  247. breathtaking landscape. there's a glory

  248. to it. Um, and when your heart is humble

  249. and when you're being humble towards the

  250. Lord,

  251. that heart desires to ascribe that glory

  252. to the log. Look at to the Lord. Look at

  253. what you've created. There's a glory to

  254. the creation that is meant to point to

  255. God. But when you

  256. don't humble yourself or allow God to

  257. cultivate a heart of humility, uh your

  258. pride will begin to look at those things

  259. and instead of ascribing worship to the

  260. Lord for it, the worship begins to be

  261. ascribed towards the created thing. Um

  262. and that ends up being turned then

  263. towards self- glorification. Look at the

  264. great things I've done. Look at the

  265. great person I am. Look at the the great

  266. things that I've accomplished through my

  267. intelligence, through my power. Speaking

  268. of football, uh even even mothers and

  269. fathers who are not necessarily

  270. wellknown can start using the

  271. accomplishments that they've helped

  272. their children to accomplish to ascribe

  273. to themselves glory. It becomes a very

  274. ugly thing, but you'll see it happen.

  275. very reason I'm talking about this I'm

  276. going to go and read read Esther chapter

    Esther 1 chapter mention

  277. 1-9 is that the pursuit of vain glory is

  278. all over the story of Esther

  279. and it leads to destruction this king uh

  280. we know him historically as Xerxes one

  281. the famous Xerxes in the Bible he's

  282. called and also other uh historical um

  283. documents he's called Aasawa as well and

  284. we're going to get to know about him and

  285. he's this vain glorious god king. He's

  286. got temper issues. He's a womanizer and

  287. uh another character we'll be introduced

  288. to is Hmon. Some of you have probably uh

  289. read Esther many times and so you know

  290. really well. If you have not uh recently

  291. read Esther, I would highly suggest even

  292. if you haven't done it just before the

  293. sermon, read it in one sitting. You

  294. don't have to read it fast. It's 10

  295. chapters. It doesn't take that long.

  296. probably going to get it done in about

  297. 25 minutes of just reading it. Uh and

  298. then you get just a sense of the entire

  299. study and there's these major characters

  300. you're intro in introduced to. Uh

  301. Hassaweris is is one of the main uh if

  302. we were making a movie he'd be one of

  303. the stars of the show so to speak um but

  304. in a vain glorious way. You're

  305. introduced also to Morai. If I told you

  306. that there's uh a character and I was

  307. talking about biblical characters who

  308. got taken into captivity into slavery to

  309. a foreign land um and then suffers there

  310. as a result and is under threat and gets

  311. falsely accused and then rises to become

  312. the second in command of this world

  313. power. Who'd you be thinking of? Joseph.

  314. Yeah, I'm talking about Morai.

  315. And you probably knew that. I wasn't

  316. trying to trick you, but more that

  317. happens to Morai. Gets taken into exile

  318. and everything I just said happens to

  319. him and he rises and gets exalted to the

  320. second in command under Aasaweras, under

  321. Xerxes.

  322. Wild story. Um, we're also introduced to

  323. a queen named Vashi that quickly becomes

  324. uh deposed uh as uh queen because she um

  325. uh she won't go along with the with the

  326. king's will. He gets really angry

  327. because his will, his glorious will is

  328. being thwarted. And so he deposes her as

  329. king and then holds what we would call

  330. in modern times a beauty pageant but

  331. much darker uh to find another queen and

  332. to also increase his herum. And we find

  333. Esther to be this unbelievably godly

  334. woman, self-sacrificial woman. and

  335. Morai, her uncle, who' become her father

  336. figure and who'd raised her to be a

  337. mentor and counsel to her. And Esther's

  338. character is one of great humility,

  339. submissiveness, and teachability. And

  340. she lets Mororti teach her. And she even

  341. is willing to put her life on the line.

  342. One of the most famous lines in Esther

  343. is, "If I perish, I perish." She'll put

  344. her life on the line to save her people,

  345. the Jews, who are under this terrible

  346. threat. And I want to talk about this

  347. threat too because it may be more epic

  348. than you realize. When I started

  349. studying and I've been spending I've

  350. been loving it. One of the favorite

  351. things of my vocation now and seeking to

  352. spend my life on making God look good

  353. rather than myself is that because of

  354. your generous giving, I'm set apart. My

  355. salary allows me to uh spend my hours

  356. studying God's word. And then I get to

  357. tell you what he's taught me and and try

  358. to give you a leg up on application in

  359. your own life. give you a sense of what

  360. God's word means to use words about

  361. preaching from from the book of Ezra.

  362. Um, and so I want to give you just some

  363. uh a map of the setting of this time.

  364. Um, we're talking, you know, uh, King

  365. Ahazerus or Xerxes one reign was from

  366. 486

  367. BC. That's when it started, but the the

  368. story actually starts about 465 BC.

  369. remember in BC um the uh the the dates

  370. get um uh smaller as you get closer to

  371. the life of Christ. Um so it's before

  372. Christ and so sometimes that can be

  373. confusing but again uh his reign is from

  374. 486 BC to 465 but the story takes place

  375. in about a decade or a little bit longer

  376. from 483 to 473 BC

  377. before the time of Christ. And here's

  378. the map of just how large the Aido

  379. Persian Empire had become. Okay, so you

  380. can see it's just gigantic,

  381. you know, all the way down the river

  382. Nile, all the way over to the Indis

  383. River. You can see all of the promised

  384. land is under the control of Xerxes, all

  385. the way into Thrace. They hadn't

  386. conquered um Athens or Greece at this

  387. time. Uh but there's famous stories we

  388. might get into about that at another

  389. time. But there's just it's a gigantic

  390. empire.

  391. But to us in our modern minds, you know,

  392. when I think of the world, um I I kind

  393. of think of a of a globe like one where

  394. you can spin around and look at it. I'm

  395. thinking where is this? And we actually

  396. even have a globe. And so um when I

  397. think of the world, I think of this as a

  398. region of the world still. The world is

  399. much larger than this. And so in the

  400. back of my mind, I was thinking about

  401. the threat to the Jews. We're introduced

  402. to this man named Hmon. And God calls

  403. him an enemy of his people, an enemy of

  404. the Jews. And he hatches a plan to have

  405. all of the Jews in the Meo Persian

  406. Empire slaughtered. And in a way, he

  407. tricks King Xerxes. And he uses King

  408. Xerxes desire to glorify himself to

  409. trick him. Uh what he does is says these

  410. people are not willing to submit to you

  411. or to your law and it's not in your best

  412. interest. It's not in the best interest

  413. of your greatness to allow them to live.

  414. And so he decrees this law that all of

  415. the Jews would be annihilated and they

  416. sit down to drink callously. But it's

  417. ultimately Hmon that is the one that

  418. hatches this plan. And it's in part as a

  419. result of his hatred for Mordori who was

  420. a Jew and and Morortei wouldn't bow down

  421. and worship him. So that's what Hmon

  422. really wanted. He wanted people to bow

  423. down and honor him. Another vain

  424. glorious man of an even greater evil

  425. character than King Xerxes or Aasaweris.

  426. And so this decree goes out and you

  427. still may with a modern mind think of it

  428. and there's a there's a truth to this

  429. that this is a regional threat to the

  430. Jews. But the reality is that the

  431. overwhelming vast majority of all Jews

  432. lived in this region. And so if that

  433. command had gone through and the Meo

  434. Persian Empire and all of its citizens

  435. citizens had slaughtered all the Jews,

  436. man, woman and child alike, which the

  437. decree said that it would have destroyed

  438. the vast majority of the Jews. Basically

  439. would have wiped out the Jewish

  440. population altogether.

  441. Okay? And so, to be honest, I I don't

  442. like bringing up the Holocaust. There's

  443. too many times where people bring up the

  444. Holocaust and bring up Hitler as a

  445. political slam. Um, which in my opinion

  446. only serves to diminish how evil it

  447. actually was. It's like crying wolf with

  448. the Holocaust. And I don't like to do

  449. that. So, that's not my intent here. But

  450. when you think I also with what I'm

  451. saying do not mean to diminish the

  452. horror and dread. Um, but the numbers

  453. I've heard are somewhere between six and

  454. 12 million Jews. Some numbers are even

  455. higher of this horror of the Holocaust

  456. of the Jews in in but they that was not

  457. a threat to them over the entire world

  458. unless Hitler and Germany had gotten its

  459. desire to take over the whole world and

  460. God thwarted that plan as well. Um, so 6

  461. to 12 million Jews is dreadful. uh but

  462. it's still not a threat to the entire

  463. world population of the Jews. And the

  464. only reason I'm saying this is like I

  465. said in no way to diminish the

  466. Holocaust, but to to elevate our

  467. understanding of how dreadful this turn

  468. of events was in Meo Persia. This was a

  469. threat to the global population of the

  470. Jews. That's how epic this is. When you

  471. think about Mori talking about Esther

  472. being queen for such a time as this, the

  473. such a time as this is this although

  474. it's regional, like I've explained, it's

  475. actually basically a global threat to

  476. the entire population of God's people.

  477. That's what she decides to lay her life

  478. down and say, "If I perish, I perish."

  479. So the the that elevated the conflict to

  480. an even more epic level when I started

  481. realizing and back of mind came front of

  482. mind. It's not just regional, it's the

  483. threat of just about the entire Jewish

  484. population. That's what Hmon um was

  485. seeking. So very evil, very much an

  486. enemy of the Jews. Another very

  487. interesting thing that most faithful

  488. students of the Bible already know is

  489. that God's name is not mentioned in all

  490. of the book of the of Esther and it's

  491. it's only place that that's true in the

  492. Bible where there's just no mention of

  493. him but his providence and his

  494. sovereignty is over all of it. You know,

  495. when Esther realizes what is required of

  496. her, um she uh commands that a a fast

  497. would be held. Her and her young servant

  498. ladies fast and she asks all the Jews to

  499. fast as well as Morai. And what do you

  500. fast for? Fasting is and fasting and

  501. prayer go together. You're seeking God's

  502. deliverance or God's will in some

  503. relatively desperate way. if you're

  504. fasting. So God is implied all

  505. throughout Esther and his providence,

  506. his sovereign control over the events

  507. that happen becomes so obvious even

  508. though it's all behind the scenes. And I

  509. think that's really interesting because

  510. there are times where especially if

  511. you're kind of going through a rough

  512. time in life and you haven't front of

  513. mind been thinking about how can I serve

  514. the Lord in his glory and maybe your

  515. heart has started been turning towards

  516. worldly things and things that are more

  517. about the glory of created things

  518. separate from uh God's glory and you're

  519. just not all that excited about your

  520. faith and you're kind of going through

  521. the motions and the concept cept of

  522. laying down your life for some cause

  523. like this. The concept of serving the

  524. Lord is not front of mind or or the

  525. thing that really matters in your heart.

  526. And it wasn't like Esther knew she was

  527. going to become a queen all of a sudden.

  528. It wasn't by choice that that happened.

  529. She was just taken into the herum. It

  530. wasn't by choice that she decided to be

  531. in a position where she either stands up

  532. verbally and out loud and goes into the

  533. king's presence without initial

  534. permission which the law for that was to

  535. be executed or she and her people die.

  536. She didn't decide that those

  537. circumstance would happen and they can

  538. happen to you overnight.

  539. Maybe your story won't have some kind of

  540. global epic threat to God's people

  541. today. As we talked about the Israel of

  542. God, the people of God who who have

  543. repented and placed their faith in Jesus

  544. at this point and any future people that

  545. will do that as well.

  546. Um maybe

  547. it'll just be a smaller version at first

  548. of faithfulness,

  549. but since you're kind of going through

  550. the motions, you're not prepared for

  551. that faithfulness. And you're not you

  552. might not listen to the counselors or

  553. mentors or Christian faithful people in

  554. your life that are telling you this this

  555. is what you need to do. And there are

  556. terrible consequences when we're seeking

  557. actually to exalt our own reputations

  558. rather than the Lord's reputation. And

  559. the very reason for that is that God

  560. opposes the proud. His character is such

  561. that he will always oppose the proud.

  562. He opposes men that throw their arms out

  563. and say, "Are you not entertained for

  564. their own glory?"

  565. He opposes men like King Asaweras.

  566. He vengefully opposes men like Hmon.

  567. Another thing about seeking your own

  568. very vain glory that we'll learn more

  569. and more about is that when Hmon gets

  570. exalted to a very high position, but

  571. this one man Morai will not bow down to

  572. him and it takes over his heart and

  573. mind. He can't take any joy in any of

  574. the ways that he has been advanced by

  575. King Aasaweres. All he can think about

  576. is this one man

  577. that won't bow down to him. And the very

  578. same thing will happen on the road to

  579. pursuit to pursuing uh the betterment of

  580. your own reputation. Uh rather than

  581. showing off God's greatness, what will

  582. happen is uh God will start opposing you

  583. in that. and the contentment that you

  584. could find in being thankful in the

  585. things he'd given him. When there's just

  586. even one thing wrong in your life,

  587. that's what your heart will start

  588. focusing on, this inglorious thing that

  589. you didn't want to be and that's not

  590. according to your will and that isn't

  591. working right. And so that becomes the

  592. focus. And then because we're

  593. Christians, we haven't just completely

  594. forgotten God. We start thinking God's

  595. holding out on us. He's not really

  596. taking care of us. He doesn't want to

  597. give us this one thing. And that's why

  598. we don't have it. And the reality is

  599. because you're living for an agenda that

  600. seeks to

  601. strengthen the fame and glory of your

  602. own reputation rather than the Lord's.

  603. He is indeed actually opposing us. What

  604. is the way out of that? What is the way

  605. out of that? That is a major question

  606. we're going to have to ask in this

  607. question and answer. I want to give you

  608. my main point as I give you at the

  609. beginning of every sermon and I'll have

  610. it displayed here. And the main point

  611. that we'll take away from this passage,

  612. and you'll see how this is the main

  613. point and why I arrived at it as we walk

  614. through it. God's will for us is to

  615. sobermindedly

  616. show others the greatness of his

  617. reputation rather than our own.

  618. That's God's will for every single

  619. Christian. God's will for us is to

  620. sobermindedly show others the greatness

  621. of his reputation rather than our own.

  622. We're going to learn that by contrast of

  623. negative example. That is the opposite

  624. what King Xerxes or Hassaweras was

  625. living his life for. That is what Mori

  626. and Esther were living their lives for.

  627. But it's not what Hassaweras Hmon his

  628. wife Zesh were living their lives for.

  629. Let me read Esther 1 1-9. And I want you

  630. to consider all the desire and activity

  631. surrounding vain glory. Glory ascribed

  632. to created things in disconnection from

  633. God.

  634. Now in the days of Aasaweres, the

  635. Ahasaweras who reigned from India to

  636. Ethiopia over 127 provinces. In those

  637. days the king when king Aasaweres sat on

  638. his royal throne in Susa, the citadel.

  639. In the third year of his reign, he gave

  640. a feast for all his officials and

  641. servants. The army of Persia and Media

  642. and the nobles and governors of the

  643. provinces were before him, while he

  644. showed the riches of his royal glory and

  645. the splendor and pomp of his greatness

  646. for many days, 180 days. And when these

  647. days were completed, the king gave for

  648. all the people present in Susa, the

  649. citadel, both great and small, a feast

  650. lasting for 7 days in the court of the

  651. garden of the king's palace. There were

  652. white cotton curtains and violet

  653. hangings fastened with cords of fine

  654. linen and purple to silver rods and

  655. marble pillars and also couches of gold

  656. and silver on a mosaic pavement of pfery

  657. marble mother of pearl and precious

  658. stones. Drinks were served in golden

  659. vessels, vessels of different kinds, and

  660. the royal wine was lavished according to

  661. the bounty of the king. And drinking was

  662. according to this edict. There's no

  663. compulsion. For the king had given

  664. orders to all the staff of his palace to

  665. do as each man desired. Queen Vashi also

  666. gave a feast for the women in the palace

  667. that belonged to King Aasaweris.

  668. So you can probably already see

  669. how by negative example, King Xerxes,

  670. King Aoeres is doing the very opposite

  671. of God's will for us. seeking to show

  672. off his own greatness to his entire

  673. kingdom.

  674. First to officials and uh men in

  675. positions of high authority throughout

  676. all the provinces

  677. um princes and governors and nobles and

  678. then also to the commoners. But notice

  679. it says in verse 5 to the commoners both

  680. great and small

  681. not just the least of these but also uh

  682. other great men in this case I keep

  683. saying men because that is who was

  684. invited to this is a very patriarchal

  685. society and this case I don't mean in a

  686. good way chauvinistically patriotic it's

  687. a patriarchal uh it's a major theme is

  688. the wrong version of uh patriot

  689. hierarchal male coercive dominance. So

  690. there will be themes especially in the

  691. next sermon about what it looks like for

  692. men to lead the way God actually wants

  693. them to without this kind of coercive

  694. force. Uh so you can be looking forward

  695. to that. We'll be talking all about

  696. marriage and preparation for marriage

  697. but also just relationships to

  698. authority. Looking at this, you have

  699. this culture and feast days

  700. all dedicated to vain glorious pursuits.

  701. And you know, it wasn't just King

  702. Hazerus that was pursuing this vain

  703. glory. uh we get introduced to Hmon

  704. who's seeking his own vain glory

  705. underneath the authority of King Hazarus

  706. and just looking for more for more ways

  707. to um cozy up to the king so that he can

  708. rise in power and wealth and in

  709. greatness of his own and he wants that

  710. displayed to everybody and when Morai

  711. doesn't bow to him it's opposing his

  712. will or when Vashi doesn't obey the

  713. current queen doesn't obey a hazardous

  714. will he flies into a rage he gets

  715. enraged about it

  716. and so it's just a culture inundated

  717. with this. And you can look at King

  718. Xerxes and think, "Oh, what a pompous,

  719. arrogant pride monster, right?" And

  720. think, "Oh, these god kings with their

  721. herm. It's just so evil and dark." And

  722. it is. It is. But let's consider how

  723. different our culture really is.

  724. Remember, they have god kings. We have

  725. elected presidents and elected

  726. officials. Um, but when you think about

  727. just fast forwarding the story a little

  728. bit when Vashi is deposed and

  729. Hasaweras is seeking a new queen and

  730. they find all the beautiful virgins in

  731. the kingdom, not all of them, but they

  732. find maybe the most beautiful ones and

  733. they bring them and there's basically

  734. this beauty pageantlike competition for

  735. who's going to win the king's favor. And

  736. we end up knowing it's it's Esther. And

  737. at the same time, you think about I said

  738. that word beauty pageant. What are Miss

  739. America or Miss Universe beauty

  740. pageantss about? Well, there's no God

  741. king. But the God king sits on the couch

  742. and just enjoys lusting after these

  743. women in their swimsuit competitions.

  744. How's that really different in God's

  745. eyes than a man having a herum? Well,

  746. you can't through coercive first force

  747. just take this for yourself. But that's

  748. what so many men are lusting after when

  749. they there's a reason why there's these

  750. swimsuit competitions.

  751. It's not an inner beauty pageant,

  752. right? So, we found a way to design it

  753. with the consent of women, but God still

  754. sees the desire of the heart.

  755. Or consider social media. I don't mean

  756. to slam social media as if there is no

  757. good use of it. We post these sermons on

  758. social media. Uh it'd be hypocritical to

  759. be like, "Oh, social media is evil." But

  760. when you think of Instagram and what

  761. influence are displaying, isn't so much

  762. of it just vain, glorious? Look how

  763. great my life is. Look how great my

  764. vacations are. Look how well I've

  765. designed my house. Look how smart this

  766. life hack is that I came up with.

  767. There's so much vain glory everywhere.

  768. So much vain glory. Or consider the

  769. workplace and just the rat race of

  770. people trying to climb over each other

  771. for a promotion. All this competition.

  772. There may be more than uh I I don't

  773. think there are more than two stories of

  774. a guy getting taken into slavery and

  775. then being exalted to the second in

  776. command under the king. Morai and Joseph

  777. come to mind. But that's what happens.

  778. That's what happens to Mori. He humbles

  779. himself. He seeks God's will. Esther

  780. humbles herself and God just keeps

  781. exalting them.

  782. So, it's not as though God doesn't have

  783. a plan for the exaltation of people that

  784. are humble and actually pursuing his

  785. glory. He does. We're going to talk all

  786. about that. But my first point that I

  787. want to make in support of this idea

  788. that God's will for us is to

  789. sobermindedly show others the greatness

  790. of his reputation rather than our own is

  791. that our situation and time has some

  792. differences in terms of we're not under

  793. a god king. And he the the the leaders

  794. that we have to submit to don't have

  795. total uh decree authority like King

  796. Xerxes did. We're in a constitutional

  797. republic and there um the power of the

  798. people is still very much a very real

  799. thing and a degree of individual

  800. sovereignty is um but what God's after

  801. is not some kind of outward display of

  802. us seeking his glory. But he's after the

  803. heart. Is your heart turned towards

  804. pursuing him being glorified? His

  805. reputation being magnified? Does your

  806. life when you evaluate it across

  807. different areas and different desires,

  808. does it look like your life's designed

  809. to make God look good or is your life

  810. designed to make him look good? And

  811. don't forget, we live in a culture where

  812. we're just marinating in vain, glorious

  813. pursuit, vain, glorious pursuit in

  814. advertising. Vain, glorious pursuit,

  815. objectifying women in advertising.

  816. Right? It's not just God King Xerxes

  817. that does it. It's almost every

  818. advertising company

  819. that uses women scantily clad, paraded

  820. in front of the TV to sell their

  821. product.

  822. This vain, glorious pursuit is all over

  823. our lives. You cannot escape it as long

  824. as you're living in the world. And you

  825. can't really escape living in the world,

  826. can you?

  827. God has something to say about such

  828. vain, glorious pursuits. I'd like to put

  829. up 1 John chapter 2 verse 15-17.

    1 John 2:15–17

  830. I think I have it up for you on the

  831. screens. Do not love the world or the

  832. things in the world. If anyone loves the

  833. world, the love of the father is not in

  834. him. Next verse. For all that is in the

  835. world, the desires of the flesh and the

  836. desires of the eyes and the pride of

  837. life is not from the father, but is from

  838. the world.

  839. So there's this, it's not a false

  840. dichotomy. You either love God the

  841. Father or you love the world. And you

  842. can't have it both ways.

  843. Jesus also said you can't serve God and

  844. money.

  845. Money, by the way, in a lot of ways is a

  846. tool

  847. that really amplifies self-

  848. glorification.

  849. We're going to be talking about how uh

  850. our fleshly desires can be amplified in

  851. the pursuit of vain glory. Alcohol is

  852. one of those, right? They're all just

  853. drinking. Each man can do as he desires.

  854. Well, the flesh, left to its own desire,

  855. desires drunkenness, desires partying.

  856. You know, that's what I did when I was

  857. in college football. The greatest thing

  858. you could do was being a great football

  859. player. Maybe second greatest thing to

  860. do would be like a womanizer. And the

  861. third greatest thing you could do was

  862. hold your liquor.

  863. That's what these gladiators of football

  864. players really cared about.

  865. There may there was maybe one guy I knew

  866. that actually was walking in his faith

  867. at that time and didn't give into all of

  868. those things. Everyone else, even the

  869. guys that called themselves Christians,

  870. and I did, I lived like a total

  871. hypocrite. Those were the things that

  872. they were pursuing. Things that would

  873. make them look glorious to other people.

  874. Things that objectified women, things

  875. that led to total foolish destruction.

  876. And that's what God's saying. These

  877. things are passing away. They don't even

  878. last. They're not of eternal value. But

  879. pursuing God's will, which is that

  880. you would display the greatness of his

  881. reputation with your life, that will

  882. last forever.

  883. That will last forever. And he will

  884. share it with no idoltor. Let me show

  885. you Isaiah 42:8. If you're worshiping

    Isaiah 42:8

  886. created things cut off from a pathway to

  887. be glorifying God, he says, "I am the

  888. Lord. That is my name. My glory I give

  889. to no other, nor my praise to carved

  890. idols.

  891. You know, anything can become an idol.

  892. An idol doesn't have to be something

  893. that's inherently evil.

  894. A common example that is just so

  895. relevant in our life would be

  896. entertainment.

  897. You've got probably 10 different

  898. streaming services that you can find

  899. just about every movie and every series.

  900. And if entertainment has become an idol

  901. in your life, then you just spend so

  902. much time binge watching these shows.

  903. Is there anything wrong with some

  904. entertainment and watching shows? No, I

  905. don't think so. I don't think there's

  906. wrong something just automatically wrong

  907. with entertainment. I I seek times of

  908. entertainment. Valentine's Day might be

  909. a time where a husband uh looks to

  910. design uh a romantic dinner and some

  911. entertainment and uh his heart could

  912. totally be turned towards the Lord,

  913. thanking the Lord for the dinner,

  914. thanking the Lord for the entertainment

  915. and for this marriage and for this wife.

  916. And so the entertainment and the food

  917. and the marriage glorifies God. It's not

  918. cut off from that. or when what we

  919. really care about is how good the food

  920. is, how interesting or funny or

  921. captivating the entertainment is or even

  922. our wife can so quickly become an idol

  923. and our husbands too. It's it's what you

  924. care about most.

  925. What you care about most that is either

  926. the Lord or an idol and a little baby

  927. idol can be in development at any time.

  928. I like to think in terms of like

  929. diagnostic tools to figure out, do I

  930. have idols in my life? Um, when I think

  931. about reading God's word, I don't know

  932. if this is relatable, but

  933. Holy Spirit's prompting me to pray and

  934. read God's word and simultaneously to

  935. that desire because I I love reading

  936. God's word. I really enjoy it. um except

  937. right before committing to do it and

  938. going upstairs and sitting down

  939. studying, there's this other voice in my

  940. heart, this other will that would rather

  941. do anything other than that.

  942. And it's astonishing because I also know

  943. I love it and I can't wait to learn

  944. things and God will show me things that

  945. I've never seen that have these amazing

  946. applications and there's eternal life to

  947. be found in the scriptures and the grace

  948. and knowledge of Jesus Christ

  949. whose glory is peerless and without

  950. compare.

  951. Nothing better than the word of God,

  952. better than gold.

  953. And yet,

  954. oh man, I just want to play video games

  955. so much right now or shoot my compound

  956. bow or do some project in the yard that

  957. I really didn't want to do before, but

  958. man, maybe just to avoid God's word, I

  959. could go and take out the trash even.

  960. These are the thoughts my flesh is

  961. having. I don't know if you felt this

  962. but man and you just Lord put to death

  963. those thoughts that will keep me from

  964. your word but if you don't and then you

  965. start pursuing those things and you find

  966. yourself in a season of prayerlessness

  967. of to where you've like the desire for

  968. God's word has been totally diminished

  969. and you given into those desires do

  970. anything else and you start finding

  971. yourself in the shire life where God

  972. calls you to a glorious and epic and

  973. dangerous adventure of going destroying

  974. the ring. But the Shire, that's where

  975. all your desire is. That's what you've

  976. been building for yourself. And so your

  977. house now, not in the service of the

  978. Lord, but in the service of your own

  979. agenda. Your money, not in the service

  980. of the Lord, in the service of your own

  981. agenda. you're way more excited to get a

  982. hot tub

  983. than you are pursuing serving the Lord

  984. cuz oh man, a hot tub's so warm and it's

  985. so therapeutic to my muscles and all my

  986. football injuries that feel so chronic

  987. and hard. You know, you can just geek

  988. out on anything that's an idol.

  989. You know it. You know it. One of the

  990. reasons for that is there are is glory

  991. in created things. There is

  992. there's glory. And we'll learn about

  993. these horses all bred from one stud of

  994. the king that he sends out hurriedly for

  995. a new decree that the Jews can defend

  996. themselves against any people that would

  997. try to carry out uh the entire

  998. annihilation from them. There's glory in

  999. these kinds of forces. There's a certain

  1000. glory in chariots. There's a certain

1001. glory in winning the Super Bowl. Like I

1002. said, there's a certain glory in your

  1003. son

1004. winning a fifth grade inter mural soccer

1005. championship at Grand View Baptist

  1006. Academy.

1007. But who does the glory belong to?

1008. It doesn't belong to me as a father. It

1009. doesn't even belong to my son. It

1010. belongs to the Lord who made his legs

1011. who sustains his legs and his mind and

  1012. his

1013. you know in this case

1014. what is it hand eye coordination foot

1015. eye coordination for soccer you know who

1016. in your job you know the Lord makes a

1017. point of as he's bringing the people

1018. into the promised land to tell them

1019. don't think it's because of your own

1020. righteousness that I brought here and

1021. when you go there and despair

1022. paraphrasing and you make money and you

1023. make for life for yourself. Don't think

1024. that it's because of your own will and

1025. power that you gain these things for

1026. yourself because I gave you the power to

1027. get wealth. I gave you the context in

1028. which so he gives us our jobs. He gives

1029. us the intelligence we have. He develops

1030. our competence in that area. And so all

1031. of the success of your life and anything

  1032. you've done,

1033. the glory for that is rightly ascribed

  1034. to him.

1035. The glory of that is rightly ascribed to

1036. him. But when you cut that off,

1037. your heart desire because of the flesh

1038. starts becoming focused on your own

1039. glory. You know, if we look in at verse

1040. 6 again, there were white cotton

1041. curtains and violet hangings fastened

1042. with cords of fine linen and purple and

1043. silver rod rods and marble pillars and

1044. also couches of gold and silver on a

1045. mosaic pavement of porefree marble

1046. mother of pearl and precious stones. Had

1047. you walked into this feast, it would

  1048. have been breathtaking.

1049. There was a certain glory in this palace

1050. of citadel in Soua, you know. I mean

1051. what it reminded me of if you read

1052. towards the end maybe chapter 35 and on

1053. in Exodus it reminded me of the

1054. descriptions of God's tabernacle and

1055. later descriptions of his temple as

  1056. well.

1057. You know acacia wood overlaid with gold.

1058. It would have been breathtaking to walk

  1059. into the temple.

  1060. In this case

1061. is displaying his own glory with that.

1062. But is it wrong for God to do the very

1063. same thing to display his glory? I want

1064. to compare a little bit how man

1065. glorifies himself compared to how God

1066. glorifies himself. Okay, with the

1067. hassawer seeking his own vain glory

1068. almost leads to the entire annihilation

  1069. of God's people.

  1070. That's a that's a a warning, isn't it,

1071. from God? Like a woe. Seek your own

1072. glory. You will not know

1073. the magnitude of the destruction coming

  1074. your way.

1075. And yet, is that is that how God glory

1076. exercises his glory? Is is glory all

  1077. about foolish self-exaltation

1078. at the cost of his people?

1079. or is it actually exactly the opposite

1080. thing? I want to go, you know, we talked

1081. about Isaiah 42 that he does not share

1082. his glory uh with anyone practicing

1083. idolatry. Um but listen to what Jesus

  1084. prays in John 17

1085. about shared glory. John 17 also known

1086. as the high high priestly prayer verse

  1087. 22

1088. the glory this is Jesus Jesus praying to

1089. his father God the son to praying to God

1090. to fa the father the high the true high

  1091. priest

1092. here's what he has to say the glory that

1093. you have given me I have given to them

1094. he's talking about his disciples that

1095. they may be one even as we are one.

1096. We have another verse. Yeah. I in the I

1097. in them and you in me that they may

1098. become perfectly one so that the world

1099. may know that you sent me and loved me

1100. uh and loved excuse me back one more

1101. time. I misread. Uh and love them even

1102. as you have loved me. I, Father, I

1103. desire that they also whom you have

1104. given me may be with me where I am to

1105. see my glory that you have given me

1106. because you loved me before the

  1107. foundation of the world.

1108. The prayer of Jesus Christ, our savior,

  1109. the son of God,

1110. is that God would share his glory with

  1111. us.

1112. Idolatry will interrupt that every time.

  1113. Look at second Peter 1 3-4.

1114. His divine power has granted to us all

1115. things that pertain to life and

1116. godliness through the knowledge of him

1117. who called us to his own glory and

  1118. excellence.

1119. by which he has granted to us his

1120. precious and very great promises so that

1121. through them you may become partakers

1122. in the divine nature having escaped the

1123. corruption that is in the world because

  1124. of sinful desire

  1125. or consider Romans 12 1-3

1126. pretty famous verse I appeal to you

1127. therefore brothers by the mercies of God

1128. to present your bodies as a living

  1129. sacrifice

1130. words of Esther just echoing in my mind.

1131. If I perish, I perish. Holy and

1132. acceptable to God, which is your

1133. spiritual worship. Do not be conformed

1134. to this world, but be transformed by the

1135. renewal of your mind, that by testing

1136. you may discern what is the will of God,

1137. what is good and acceptable and perfect.

1138. and last verse in this book. For by the

1139. grace given to me, I say to everyone

1140. among you, to think of himself, to not

1141. think of himself more highly than he

1142. ought to, but to think with sober

1143. judgment, each according to the measure

1144. of the faith that God has assigned.

1145. You know, I made the point that

1146. idols don't start necessarily as

1147. inherently evil things. There's nothing

1148. wrong with feasting. There's nothing

  1149. wrong with celebrating.

1150. There may be something wrong with even

1151. one glass of wine for some Christians

1152. who feel convicted by God not to. There

1153. is nothing wrong with all Christians or

1154. Christians in general to have a glass of

  1155. wine

1156. to have a measured relationship to

1157. alcohol. It'd be legalistic to say that

1158. that's just not allowed biblically.

1159. That's not what it says. It says, "Do

1160. not be drunk on wine, but be filled with

  1161. the spirit."

1162. So now consider how things like alcohol

1163. for a second because it's right here.

1164. The edict was there is no compulsion.

1165. Everyone did as they desired. So you

1166. know it was a drinking party. Doesn't

1167. mean that every single person got drunk.

1168. Doesn't mean that every single person

1169. was was even drinking. But man, combine

1170. vain glorious pursuits with alcohol.

1171. Dipping into the very next chapter. But

1172. Vashi refused to come to the king's

1173. command delivered by the Unix. At this

1174. the king became enraged and his anger

  1175. burned within him.

  1176. I'm thinking of a verse a friend

1177. recently quoted from memory to me from I

  1178. think it is um

  1179. Psalm

1180. I forget maybe someone might remember

1181. here but it's a famous one. Whoever is

1182. slow to anger is better than the mighty

1183. and he who rules his spirit than he who

1184. takes a city. Who does God see as glory

1185. as glorious? Someone that can control

  1186. their emotions.

1187. So you think, "Oh, maybe your testimony

1188. includes severe anger issues like mine

1189. does, and you're wanting God to conquer

1190. those more and more." Well, you can sew

1191. to the flesh, and every vain glorious

1192. pursuit is sewing to the flesh. And then

1193. when someone thwarts your vain glorious

1194. will to make your own reputation great

1195. at your job as a mother as a kid in

1196. junior high or high school or elementary

1197. school and someone starts gossiping

1198. about you and some people start

1199. believing things about your reputation

1200. that isn't true and you're just so

  1201. angry.

1202. Maybe kids aren't adding alcohol to that

1203. although some are. You know people kids

1204. drink way more than you might think in

1205. college. They just tend to hide it.

1206. Well, but as adults, you think it's

  1207. going to help you

1208. to without any boundaries engage with

1209. alcohol in the pursuit of becoming a

  1210. more emotionally controlled person.

1211. What helps you is being filled with the

1212. spirit and the fruit of the spirit like

1213. patience and self-control and gentleness

  1214. and kindness.

1215. Or like James says, "Be quick to listen,

1216. slow to anger, slow to speak, for the

1217. anger of man does not produce the

1218. righteousness of God." Oh man, fathers,

1219. you know who will thwart your way, vain,

1220. glorious will all the time? Your wife

  1221. and children.

1222. Am I slamming those wife that wife and

1223. children? No, I'm not intending to. But

1224. your wife knows you. She My wife knows

1225. me. And every once in a while, she'll

1226. have some choice words to help me

1227. understand just how not glorious I

  1228. actually am.

1229. You'd love her for it if you heard it.

1230. And how do I react to that? Speaking of

1231. another diagnostic tool, when someone

1232. criticizes you, even if their criticism

1233. is meant in a mean-spirited way, or if

1234. it's not, how do you react? Well, if

1235. you've been pursuing the glory of your

1236. own reputation, your reaction is

1237. somewhere around, "How dare you talk

  1238. about me that way?"

1239. But if you've been humbling yourself,

1240. recognizing that in order for God to

1241. make you a partaker of the divine nature

1242. and to share his glory with you as Jesus

1243. prayed, his son has to be put to death

  1244. for your sin.

1245. And now you think about the glory of the

  1246. Lord

  1247. most prominently displayed

1248. in the destruction of his son.

  1249. What is God's glory

1250. other than the cross and resurrection of

1251. Jesus Christ? Jesus is the radiance of

1252. the glory of God, the very imprint of

1253. his nature. And what does this glorious

1254. king seated at the right hand of the

1255. father do before he ascends to that? He

1256. humbles himself to become a servant and

1257. even beyond that humbles himself

1258. to take on the sin he never committed.

1259. We did the sin of every vain glorious

1260. pursuit of the magnification of our own

  1261. reputation.

1262. And the justified outrage of God also

1263. known as his wrath is poured out on him.

  1264. It's a glory like no other. A

  1265. self-sacrificing glory.

1266. A glory that shows just how worthy God

1267. is of our souls magnifying

1268. every day all the way into the farthest

  1269. reaches of infinite eternity.

  1270. Aasawoeras's vain glorious pursuits

1271. almost leads to the destruction of God's

  1272. people.

  1273. God's

1274. justified pursuit of his own glory that

1275. he is worthy of leads to the salvation

  1276. of his people.

  1277. It's so dramatically different.

1278. Let's go to Colossians 1:27 because we

    Colossians 1:27

1279. talked about the temple and where God

1280. displays his glory. But you may not have

1281. thought about this concept in

1282. relationship to pursuing God's glory to

1283. them. God chose to make known how great

1284. among the Gentiles are the riches of the

1285. glory of this mystery which is Christ in

1286. you the hope of glory

1287. gaining that mystery the Holy Spirit

  1288. living in you

1289. indwelling you making you the temple of

  1290. God

1291. making you God's means on earth of the

  1292. display of his glory.

1293. Mystery hidden from ages past. Nobody

1294. knew about it. This is revealed to us.

1295. This is the purpose of our lives, but it

  1296. is gained

1297. through a the lowest door of humility.

1298. Not only is there nothing you can do to

1299. gain this glory, everything you done in

1300. God's mind shows how inglorious you

1301. actually are. Our best works like filthy

1302. rags, he says. God's words, our best

  1303. works like filthy rags.

1304. So you do not gain

1305. this ancient mystery of God himself

1306. living in you, making you his own temple

  1307. of without repentance.

1308. It cannot be gained this way. The end of

1309. our vain glorious pursuits, however

1310. developed or undeveloped they are, if

  1311. that's what your life's about,

1312. you can't break that pattern without

  1313. repentance.

1314. Cannot break that pattern without

1315. repentance. Let me read James 4:7-10 and

    James 4:7–10

  1316. then conclude.

1317. Submit yourself or yourselves therefore

1318. to God. Resist the devil and he will

1319. flee from you. Stop right there. It is

  1320. not just our flesh

1321. that will populate desires to make

1322. ourselves look great to other people.

  1323. The enemy's desire himself

1324. is a God king type of desire. Remember

1325. when he tried to tempt Jesus

1326. What was his ultimate goal? Worship me.

1327. God in the flesh worshiping Satan.

1328. That's what Satan wants. So whether it's

1329. him or any one of his demonic minions,

1330. what they're all in the service of is us

1331. ultimately worshiping Satan. And they

1332. have power to advance along that way.

1333. all along the way the road to predition

  1334. will themselves be condemned.

1335. They know that end and they still resist

  1336. it.

1337. And we're said to resist not only our

1338. flesh but that enemy as well who's all

1339. about stoking the flames of our vain

1340. glorious pursuits. And he will flee from

1341. you when you resist him. Can't do it

1342. apart from the spirit. Next verse.

1343. Draw near to God and he will draw near

1344. to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners.

1345. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.

1346. These are painful words. Be wretched and

1347. mourn and weep. Let your laughter be

1348. turned to mourning and your joy to

  1349. gloom.

1350. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he

  1351. will exalt you.

1352. To your left, to your right, and behind

1353. you is the lowest table of hum of

1354. humility you can ever approach. It's the

1355. one where everything you've ever done

  1356. requires your condemnation.

1357. Shows how in glorious we really are. And

  1358. the very imprint

1359. of God's nature, the radiance of his

1360. glory, his son Jesus Christ

1361. takes on that sin and is condemned

  1362. himself.

1363. And you did nothing to earn it and I did

  1364. nothing to earn it.

1365. And now throwing out your arms and

1366. saying things like, "Are you not

  1367. entertained?

1368. are a shame that I've had to have God

1369. take away from me and not funny to me

  1370. anymore

1371. when I think of the gravity of the glory

  1372. of the Lord

1373. in his cross and resurrection.

1374. And so what could we what could be

1375. better than us entering the story of

1376. Esther in a time where our nation

1377. is devolving more and more into

  1378. depravity

1379. where the enemy is turning people's

  1380. hearts

1381. against God's people again against

1382. Christians where persecution is almost

1383. assuredly coming and may be right around

1384. the corner where we may may have to put

1385. our lives on the line for the will of

1386. the Lord. What better than for us here

1387. right at the beginning of this sermon

1388. series on Esther to come to the table

1389. and humble ourselves and say, "God, I

1390. confess the ways that I've been seeking

1391. my own glory. My prideful reactions for

1392. those who you're using to tell me I'm

  1393. not that great.

1394. my prideful ways of using even other

1395. people's success and wrapping that up

1396. into my own greatness. Whatever it is,

  1397. whatever

1398. desires have captured our hearts more

1399. than God and just to come and sacrifice

1400. them to the cross and say, "Lord,

1401. take this desire from me. I repent of

1402. it. Forgive me and fill my heart with

1403. desire to live for the greatness of your

  1404. reputation alone.

  1405. Let me pray.

  1406. Father,

  1407. it's a reset.

  1408. It's a call to humble repentance.

1409. It is a place where we might weep and

1410. mourn just how devastating our sin

  1411. actually is.

1412. But thank you for the promise that those

1413. who humble themselves before you will be

1414. exalted. will participate in your divine

1415. nature. You share your glory with us and

1416. we will be glorified in our bodies in

  1417. worship of you eternally

1418. with no destruction or sorrow or sadness

1419. or even desire for anyone other than you

1420. to be glorified. What a God you are and

1421. how glorious he truly are. And I pray

1422. that we would come in our hearts on

1423. bended knee before you today in Jesus

  1424. name. Amen.
