  1. Good morning.

  2. >> Good morning.

  3. >> Welcome to Boon's Ferry.

  4. If you're new or you're wanting to get

  5. more connected, you could fill out one

  6. of these connection cards and uh hand it

  7. off to the connection table as you walk

  8. out on your right before you go down the

  9. stairs. We've got a gift for you. Um my

  10. name is Mati Scaring and I love to hang

  11. out after church. So, if I haven't

  12. didn't get to shake your hand this

  13. morning, I'd love to get to know you and

  14. get to know your name. Um,

  15. we are coming up on Easter. Today is

  16. Palm Sunday, which is basically about

  17. worshiping Jesus. And we're going to be

  18. talking about the topic of worship today

  19. from Esther chapter 3. Um, but I thought

    Esther 3 chapter mention

  20. I'd let you know about our services. We

  21. have a service on uh Good Friday at

  22. 6:30. I can see the sign from here.

  23. Um, and that that Good Friday, you might

  24. not be used to having a Good Friday

  25. service. A lot of churches don't do it

  26. anymore. The reason why we do it is not

  27. necessarily because we follow like a

  28. church historical calendar, but because

  29. we found it to be really powerful to

  30. focus on Christ's sacrifice before we

  31. celebrate his resurrection. So, if you

  32. want to join us on resurrection Sunday

  33. after worshiping with us on Good Friday,

  34. that's on 6 at 6:30 on purpose so that

  35. it's easy for you to get there. uh maybe

  36. even be able to have dinner beforehand.

  37. And uh the service is short. There's no

  38. sermon. Uh it's just worship and uh

  39. reflection on scripture. Uh very

  40. traditional Good Friday service if

  41. you're used to those. And then our um

  42. Easter service um technically starts at

  43. 9:30 with a upgraded coffee time and

  44. pastries and hangout time. And then at

  45. uh 10:30 we have our actual Easter

  46. services. So, um, if you're bringing

  47. friends, you could invite them to come

  48. and hang out with us at 9:30 and they

  49. could also just come at 10:30 if they

  50. want to as well. But I would like to

  51. encourage you to and to pray for

  52. inviting friends, especially those that

  53. you've been witnessing to or that you've

  54. been wanting to hear the gospel. The uh

  55. Easter sermon will be um an evangelistic

  56. sermon. And so, a great time to bring

  57. friends of any kind, maybe Christian

  58. friends, too, that are uh looking for um

  59. a church body to join. maybe they're in

  60. transition or just looking for a church

  61. altogether. Great time to invite people.

  62. So, let me pray and we'll get right into

  63. the word. Heavenly Father, thank you for

  64. the opportunity to continue working

  65. through Esther. Thank you for this

  66. springtime and the flowers and the uh

  67. budding trees and just the feeling of

  68. life coming back into the world and the

  69. I'm really looking forward to summer as

  70. well. It's just a beautiful time in

  71. Oregon and it is a amazing and wild time

  72. to be alive and we want to consider what

  73. it looks like to worship you with the

  74. life that you've gifted us with and to

  75. not compromise. And so I pray today,

  76. even before we get into your word, um

  77. that would be open to your spirit's

  78. conviction, encouragement, challenge,

  79. consolation, and anything you want to

  80. teach us today and and have us apply to

  81. our hearts to transform us to make us

  82. more like your son who's perfect in

  83. every way and who we want to emulate and

  84. um and be like in our very core nature.

  85. I pray that you would use your word to

  86. accomplish that today. I pray these

  87. things in Jesus name. Amen.

  88. When you think of the word compromise,

  89. what do you think about? Do you think

  90. positive thoughts? You think negative

  91. thoughts? You know, some compromises are

  92. are really quite good. You know, for

  93. example, um if your wife wanted to get

  94. 10 more chickens and you wanted to get

  95. four more chickens, you compromise and

  96. get 10 more chickens.

  97. I switched that around though. It was me

  98. that wanted to get 10 more chickens.

  99. Just thought the joke would be funnier

  100. the other way around. Um, and we did get

  101. 10 chickens, so that's fun. Got a bunch

  102. of different kinds of chickens. And I'm

  103. looking right now. I'm searching for

  104. what's called a buff Brahma rooster,

  105. which you can get up to like 13. And I

  106. can't find one uh other than having to

  107. buy one like online, which is a lot more

  108. expensive. Um, so, but you know, things

  109. like raising chickens aside, uh, back to

  110. compromise, there's also a negative

  111. version of compromise, isn't there? uh

  112. when you compromise in your convictions,

  113. especially around compromising your

  114. worship, when you have certain

  115. convictions about biblical convictions

  116. about who to worship and what it means

  117. to worship him and to worship no one

  118. else, um

  119. the world, the enemy and your flesh will

  120. participate all together in a complex of

  121. temptation to get you to compromise in

  122. worship. So for example uh one of the

  123. most recent examples in the last decade

  124. uh of just sort of mass compromise that

  125. we experienced uh in Oregon and other

  126. places as well is you know I had a lot

  127. of friends whose convictions seem to be

  128. just like mine that uh attending church

  129. is mandatory. Coming on Sundays is

  130. mandatory. It's a very simple command in

  131. Hebrews 10. You can look at Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:23

  132. 10:23 and 24 not to forsake the

  133. gathering. And then all of a sudden

  134. there's a two week to slow the curve

  135. shutdown which we followed and I thought

  136. was entirely reasonable which turns into

  137. a month which turns it to six months

  138. which turned it into even longer. I

  139. don't even remember how long the

  140. shutdown exactly lasted but you had

  141. churches shutting down for years at a

  142. time and never quite returning to the

  143. same uh kind of worship that they did

  144. before. And um I remember thinking about

  145. how important it is to have hospitals

  146. open. That's really important. I

  147. wouldn't want to be um sick uh and then

  148. especially if I had co-orbidities, not

  149. be able to find a hospital bed. So, I

  150. thought that was important. Um but

  151. how much more important is the hospital

  152. of the soul? I forget who called the

  153. church the hospital of the soul, but

  154. it's a famous quote from a famous

  155. person, church history. And uh I thought

  156. about, you know, our our bodies are

  157. important. They are, but they will pass

  158. away. But our souls are eternally

  159. important and eternal life is preached

  160. in the church and the word is preached

  161. in the church and there's just straight

  162. up a command not to forsake the

  163. gathering. And yet I would say 90% of

  164. the friends that I had had no problem

  165. just deciding not to come to worship.

  166. Others did. We did. We felt that it was

  167. not okay to simply stop having church

  168. and we decided to stay open anyway. And

  169. um I don't actually remember if it was a

  170. law. There was some controversy about

  171. whether it was actually mandated by law,

  172. but it's very clear that the governor's

  173. intent at that time was for us not to

  174. come to gatherings like that. And you

  175. could say, well, it was hypocritical

  176. because liquor stores and strip clubs

  177. were allowed to stay open. And that is

  178. ultimately what the Supreme Court um

  179. with Gorsuch writing the prevailing

  180. opinion on that wrote down that there's

  181. there was discriminatory. But whether it

  182. was discriminatory or not, we knew that

  183. it was against the will of the governor

  184. to stay open.

  185. And so do you compromise in that

  186. situation? And is your compromise

  187. actually biblical? Because we are told

  188. uh another command in scripture that we

  189. are to submit to the governing

  190. authorities. So in order to submit to

  191. God, you need to be submitted uh to the

  192. governing authorities. So then you have

  193. this one conviction that says you need

  194. to come to church as a Christian. To

  195. just not come to church is just it's

  196. straight up disobedient. You know,

  197. that's ought not to be a controversial

  198. thing. Uh Christians get all confused

  199. about that as though you can just

  200. worship uh God in nature alone. you

  201. don't need the church, which usually

  202. just means that they've been hurt by the

  203. church and have decided to forsake the

  204. gathering. Um, but regardless of what

  205. your sense of conviction regard coming

  206. to church was, ours was that we um can't

  207. simply uh disobey God on that command.

  208. And uh we didn't force anybody to come

  209. to church either. And we weren't trying

  210. to be all cavalier about it. But the

  211. point is we had a conviction that we

  212. should come to church. So what do you do

  213. when you have a conviction that you

  214. should obey the governor? you should

  215. submit to the governor and that you

  216. should not simply delay your worship in

  217. in-person worship which most certainly

  218. was the command because there was no

  219. Zoom or live stream worship back then.

  220. So the author could not have meant

  221. anything other than public gathering

  222. together in person. What do you do? So

  223. we want to be submitted to God and

  224. worshiping the Lord requires us to be

  225. submitted to him and you can't

  226. compromise in that submission. So you

  227. have to look carefully at which law

  228. supersedes the others. And when it comes

  229. down to it, worship is just about the

  230. highest law there is, isn't there?

  231. What's higher than commands regarding

  232. worship? So the reason we uh did not

  233. obey the command or the law or the

  234. mandate or whatever it actually was of

  235. the governor to cease to just uh join

  236. together and worship come together and

  237. worship altogether uh was not because we

  238. wanted to be unsubmissive to the

  239. governor. was not because we're wanting

  240. to dismiss God's command to do so, but

  241. because we believe that God's command to

  242. not forsake the gathering supersedes a

  243. command to tell us to do the opposite of

  244. what God said. You know, and you could

  245. be totally reasonable about that. You

  246. say, well, we'll do a month of just Zoom

  247. worship. There's may at that time we had

  248. no idea how how serious the danger of CO

  249. was or wasn't, you know. So um but then

  250. you know what we ultimately decided was

  251. like months on end that definitely

  252. constitute a habit of not gathering. So

  253. for us as elders and for many of the

  254. Christians at Boon Ferry it felt as

  255. though uh uh we had formed a con uh

  256. biblical conviction that about

  257. worshiping and doing that continually

  258. and regularly in person and we didn't

  259. want to compromise on that. That was the

  260. decision we made. There was never any

  261. consequence for us as a church. maybe

  262. too small to uh we flew under the radar.

  263. Uh there were consequences for a much

  264. larger church. Athe was was taken to

  265. court and that seemed to just uh flop uh

  266. in terms of a case when the Supreme

  267. Court decided you can't discriminate

  268. against churches like this. Uh but you

  269. had to make a decision. You had to make

  270. a decision. Are you going to compromise?

  271. And there's all kinds of reasons to

  272. compromise. For one, let's say you were

  273. immuno compromised or didn't know how

  274. dangerous the um uh current co variant

  275. was. You might be in fear for your life

  276. and feel like well I I it's too

  277. dangerous. I don't want to come. So fear

  278. might be something that causes you to

  279. compromise. Uh social pressure was

  280. another one. Uh society decided that

  281. human beings are sovereign over viruses

  282. and therefore if you get it and pass it

  283. someone else that's tantamount to

  284. murder. You know, just so you know,

  285. because I like to for people to know

  286. where I stand on things, I don't believe

  287. we're sovereign over viruses. And I

  288. don't believe there's any culpability

  289. chain whatsoever for you passing a virus

  290. onto someone as though uh that is the uh

  291. that that you're now the one that put

  292. them in danger. That doesn't mean that

  293. when I'm sick, I just go coughing around

  294. on people, you know? I just don't think

  295. I'm sovereign over viruses. So, the

  296. social pressure, we were socially

  297. pressured in all kinds of ways. And when

  298. we were living in Talatton um in east

  299. east Fox Hills by neighbors and by other

  300. people, my wife was pressured. Schools

  301. were pressured. There's all kinds of

  302. social pressure. So there all all of

  303. this pressure uh to compromise and just

  304. decide not to come to church. And that

  305. one is a recent example of just how many

  306. people really did compromise and um how

  307. quickly that compromise came. So

  308. thinking in your own life though, taking

  309. it more personally, you might be as the

  310. primary provider of your home, working

  311. in a place of employment where there's

  312. pressure to compromise.

  313. You can think of all kinds of ways

  314. there's pressure to compromise. Uh one

  315. example would be that um it's sort of

  316. against the company culture to talk

  317. about religious things and so therefore

  318. don't procilitize, don't share your

  319. faith, don't be a witness. So now you'd

  320. have to compromise your worship by

  321. deciding you're never going to talk

  322. about Jesus to people. Um and there

  323. there's pressure to compromise there.

  324. There's pressure for young men to

  325. compromise to fit the worldly masculine

  326. mold. And uh that pressure for young men

  327. to compromise in the worship almost

  328. always comes in the form of forsaking

  329. your your purity sexually.

  330. Um, I don't want to be too

  331. overeneneralized, but I think at least

  332. in my experience, what I've seen, young

  333. women are often times and and maybe

  334. women of of every age, but I think

  335. especially young women are compromised

  336. uh or are uh tempted to compromise along

  337. the lines of emotional security. Uh

  338. maybe they feel a little bit insecure

  339. about how they look, about uh what

  340. people think about them. and uh a

  341. situation comes along where they could

  342. if they just compromise a little bit in

  343. their worship just sin here sin there

  344. can gain security emotionally uh by

  345. cutting corners you know so I think

  346. dating relationships often times for

  347. young women are about uh gaining

  348. security whereas for young men it's um

  349. it's often times the temptation to

  350. impurity and both both can be true for

  351. either group of people

  352. just knowing a lot of older men uh

  353. looking at their lives and being honest,

  354. and I love the honesty, feeling somewhat

  355. disappointed about what they've

  356. accomplished in their life. If you're an

  357. older guy and you're looking back at

  358. your career and you're kind of at that

  359. point where you're beyond the peak

  360. season of your vocational work and you

  361. think about, are you disappointed? And I

  362. know some of you have expressed, yes, it

  363. does does feel, I wish I'd accomplished

  364. more. I'm not sure what my legacy will

  365. be, what what lasting impact I'll have

  366. with my life. And there can be

  367. compromises that come in the form of

  368. temptation to cut corners to have more

  369. success, but just requires a little bit

  370. of sin, just a little bit of compromise

  371. in your worship. Um,

  372. all of these work across both genders,

  373. but I think of grandmothers. I think

  374. maybe one of the compromises would be

  375. temptation to make your grandchildren

  376. and family everything in your life. And

  377. so that's more important than God's

  378. word. that's more important than than

  379. your worship and family over everything.

  380. So family becomes the idol. Um but

  381. whatever it is, maybe for for young

  382. younger kids in school, uh it's social

  383. compromise, compromising uh in being

  384. part of a friends group that's really

  385. not particularly uh good in character.

  386. You know, uh Paul says, I think it's in

  387. Corinthians, uh I don't remember if it's

  388. Corinthians 1 or 2, but um do not be

  389. deceived. Bad company corrupts good

  390. morals.

  391. Man, that's one people compromise on all

  392. the time. And they I've heard so many

  393. ridiculous excuses about uh you know,

  394. justifying the desire to be around

  395. certain people that is bad influence in

  396. your life. Well, I'm being an

  397. evangelist, so like have you shared your

  398. do they know you're Christian? No, they

  399. don't know you're Christian after years

  400. of hanging out with them and your goal

  401. was to be evangelistic. No, you just

  402. like hanging out with these people and

  403. don't really care that they're uh you're

  404. deceived and thinking that constantly

  405. being around whatever you marinate in.

  406. That's what you become like garbage in,

  407. garbage out.

  408. So, especially when you desire to be

  409. around a certain group of people and

  410. maybe there's all kinds of benefits, you

  411. can end up compromising in your worship.

  412. All it takes is a little bit

  413. disobedience. We're to worship uh God in

  414. spirit and in truth, Jesus says. So in

  415. spirit, what does that mean? Well, in

  416. the power of the Holy Spirit, but also

  417. in the deepest parts of our being. And

  418. if what you're doing is a compromise in

  419. the deepest parts of your being, no

  420. matter how much you justify it to other

  421. people, God sees that compromise,

  422. that compromise. That's bad news when we

  423. compromise.

  424. But there can be even worse news. um in

  425. in a sense uh I don't know if you knew

  426. this but this is the main point from

  427. Esther chapter 3 today I want to share

    Esther 3 chapter mention

  428. it right from the beginning um and that

  429. is that refusing to compromise your

  430. worship will eventually incur the fury

  431. of the enemy

  432. you might think well that's not a very

  433. encouraging main point

  434. and that that is true uh in a in a way

  435. if you find out that you have cancer

  436. that's not a very encouraging thing to

  437. hear. But man, how much better is that

  438. than not even knowing that there's

  439. something terribly wrong in your body?

  440. So knowing the truth is always better

  441. than not knowing the truth and allows us

  442. to prepare. And there's a warning here.

  443. Refusing to compromise your worship will

  444. eventually incure fur the fury of the

  445. enemy. So, I want to talk to those men

  446. again because this is so specifically

  447. applicable to the idea of being in uh

  448. tempted to compromise in your older age

  449. by trying to have like take a shortcut,

  450. some kind of immoral thing to gain

  451. success because you're disappointed that

  452. your life has not turned out the way

  453. that it has in your vocation. You don't

  454. feel like it's been as as good as it

  455. should be. And maybe you see other other

  456. men in the exact same vocation have a

  457. lot more success. Um, well, what if one

  458. of the reasons you're having less

  459. success than you wish you uh had so far

  460. is that you haven't been compromising in

  461. your worship and you're experiencing the

  462. fury of the enemy and opposing your

  463. success? And what if God is

  464. sovereignly bringing about a situation

  465. where you're being tested by the enemy's

  466. opposition?

  467. What if the very reason you're

  468. experiencing a whole lot of push back, a

  469. whole lot of spiritual battle that's

  470. unseen and that you may not even be

  471. thinking about, what if the reasons why

  472. you're experiencing a situation where

  473. you're not having success and where

  474. things seem to be getting worse is

  475. actually because you've refused to

  476. compromise in your worship.

  477. I want to show you today biblically from

  478. chapter 3, but also from lots of other

  479. places in the Bible, how refusing to

  480. compromise your worship will eventually

  481. incur in incur the fury of the enemy.

  482. And it's good to be prepared for that.

  483. It's good to count the cost.

  484. This is a situation where you ought to

  485. count the cost and then say it's worth

  486. it, not say it's not worth it. But just

  487. because you count the cost and say that

  488. it's worth it does not mean that you

  489. shouldn't actually count the cost. There

  490. is a severe cost to refusing to

  491. compromise your worship.

  492. Just consider a modern-day example. I

  493. want to make sure I get the details of

  494. this right,

  495. but I I read on the news and these were

  496. along uh several trustworthy news sites.

  497. There was a woman named Chelsea Nelson

  498. in Louisville, Kentucky that just won a

  499. legal fight

  500. um against a local non-discrimination

  501. ordinance uh with the city agreeing to

  502. pay $800,000

  503. legal her $800,000 legal fees. I'll tell

  504. you what the case was about in a moment.

  505. You may already know, but $800,000

  506. that would bankrupt me. I don't know

  507. about you.

  508. I would lose everything if I had to pay

  509. $800,000 legal fees and the judgment had

  510. been different than this. What was her

  511. crime? Uh, refusing to be a photographer

  512. for a same-sex wedding.

  513. Think about what that means in terms of

  514. what the world is ultimately doing about

  515. compromise. It will find you out. And

  516. there's a reason for that. And we'll be

  517. going through scriptures to understand

  518. how there's a

  519. intensely intense is the wrong word

  520. hyper intelligent being named the devil

  521. Satan who has been around since the very

  522. beginning and even before the beginning

  523. of of this creation. Uh he was around

  524. before that even he's also a created

  525. being and he opposes God's will at every

  526. turn and his ultimate endgame is to be

  527. worshiped. Do you know his ultimate

  528. endgame is to be worshiped by God

  529. himself? That's what he tempted Jesus to

  530. do. We'll go to Matthew 4 today. Uh but

  531. he is the mastermind of the world's

  532. temptation. And and we'll see how the

  533. entire world is under his control

  534. still to this day. Scripture says that

  535. in Hebrews chapter 2, we'll go there as

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  536. well. And he turns the world against

  537. God's people.

  538. Back then it was the Jews. Now it's the

  539. Christians. It still is the Jews as well

  540. in a way too.

  541. So what happened there in that case was,

  542. you know, there's there's probably

  543. hundreds of photographers, if not

  544. thousands of photographers in Kentucky

  545. that um have no convictions around

  546. Christian worship and will do a

  547. wedding photography set for uh any

  548. couple. But no, this particular person

  549. needed to be forced by law to take those

  550. pictures.

  551. And it's only because of our freedom of

  552. speech. That's the amendment that was

  553. used to defend this woman. And and by

  554. the way, justice has not been

  555. accomplished. You might think, well,

  556. what a great ruling. Who pays the

  557. $800,000? The taxpayer pays that. No one

  558. really gets in trouble for these

  559. blatantly unconstitutional lawsuits

  560. brought against American citizens like

  561. this and Christians. But that's what's

  562. called legal persecution. Legal

  563. persecution.

  564. I think I have another um if I don't

  565. have a screenshot of this one, I'm just

  566. going to uh I think it was in in

  567. Finland, another case um where the

  568. Supreme Court decided exactly the

  569. opposite for a pamphlet of a woman. I

  570. think she was a lawmaker as well. Since

  571. I'm not cooperating this one with actual

  572. evidence, I forgot to take pictures. I'm

  573. pretty sure she's a lawmaker in Finland.

  574. and uh the Supreme Court ruled against

  575. her for a pamphlet she had uh talking

  576. about the um

  577. uh her Christian uh commitment to uh God

  578. having created only one me woman and one

  579. man and that's his plan for marriage. So

  580. that a pamphlet 10 years ago and she I

  581. think it it was a fine u but it was

  582. ruled hate speech you know so already

  583. people in the world in different

  584. countries who do not have constitutional

  585. rights freedom of speech that are

  586. Christians are being persecuted legally

  587. and some of these battles are being

  588. lost. So you will eventually incure

  589. incur the fury of the enemy and and

  590. there's there's nothing you can do to

  591. hide from it. Um there's nothing you can

  592. do to actually hide from even no matter

  593. how much you compromise in your worship.

  594. Small compromise after small compromise

  595. after small compromise, you will

  596. ultimately have to decide whether you're

  597. going to worship the enemy or one of his

  598. servants, which is basically worship by

  599. proxy of the enemy or worship the Lord.

  600. So you there's no point in actually

  601. hiding from it.

  602. So, let's look at how Mori refused to

  603. ultimately worship Hmon. And I want to

  604. show you why that's really what's at

  605. stake here because he also had to decide

  606. to disobey a king's direct order. And he

  607. did. He did disobey that. We don't need

  608. to mince words around. He did.

  609. So chapter 3:1

  610. of Esther. After these things, King

  611. Ahazwares promoted Hmon the Agite the

  612. son of Hamadatha and advanced him and

  613. set his throne above all the officials

  614. who were with him. By the way, I just

  615. want to mention God is the one who puts

  616. people in charge. He put King Xerxes or

  617. Hasaweris in charge and he's the one who

  618. put Hmon in charge here as well. Right?

  619. Hmon's kind of like the second command

  620. here. Verse two. And all of the king's

  621. servants who were at the king's gate

  622. bowed down and paid homage to Hmon. For

  623. the king had so commanded concerning

  624. him, but Mordei did not bow down and pay

  625. homage.

  626. So, what do we know about Morai? First

  627. of all, we know that he was for the

  628. king. He didn't necessarily support all

  629. the king's um crooked character

  630. attributes, but he saved the king's

  631. life. just the very chapter, last couple

  632. verses we went through last sermon, you

  633. saw that he's a law-abiding citizen. He

  634. he he does he's not just breaking every

  635. command. And so you think, well, why did

  636. he not just bend the knee to Hmon? Was

  637. it just cuz he didn't like him? And so

  638. bow down is a simple word that we all

  639. know in uh not necessarily the Hebrew

  640. word, but we all know what bow down

  641. means. You know, it's either get on one

  642. knee or two knees and bow down to

  643. somebody, right? And so I thought, well,

  644. maybe it'd be good uh to look at another

  645. verse where a godly character actually

  646. did bow down to another human being

  647. because we need to decide when it's okay

  648. to bow down and when it's not. If it's a

  649. command to bend the knee to somebody,

  650. let's say you're pro probably would not

  651. happen.

  652. Maybe the closest thing in America would

  653. be like uh saluting a superior officer

  654. or something like that. But but if

  655. you're in a monarchy, especially a

  656. monarchy where um the the king is

  657. actually in power, uh you may actually

  658. be required to bend down on one knee.

  659. And can you do that as a Christian? Uh

  660. the answer is yes, you can. You can do

  661. that as a um a person who worships God

  662. alone. And David does it. And it's it's

  663. the exact same word. I'll I'll I'll read

  664. it to you and then I'll show you the

  665. word in I'll read the word to you in

  666. Hebrew. This is uh 1st Samuel chapter

  667. 24:8.

  668. By the way, this is not a very difficult

  669. word study to do. Uh if you are using

  670. blue letter Bible like I did, um I've

  671. done tutorials before on how to do it,

  672. but y'all can just look up uh word

  673. studies on blue letter Bible on YouTube

  674. and they have tutorials how to do that.

  675. And it doesn't take long to look up

  676. another place cuz uh this word in Hebrew

  677. for bow down and for pay homage. Um

  678. they'll give you instances of biblical

  679. examples of it. You scroll down after

  680. you click on innerlinear and find the

  681. word and then you scroll down and it'll

  682. show you all the places it's used.

  683. That's how I found 1 Samuel. I was

  684. looking until I found one. Okay. I

  685. thought David may have bent the knee uh

  686. to another king and even Saul. And in

  687. this case, Saul's seeking his life.

  688. David being hunted like a fugitive. And

  689. here's what uh the Bible says, what

  690. God's word says. Afterward, David also

  691. arose and went out of the cave and

  692. called after Saul, my lord, the king.

  693. And when Saul looked behind him, David

  694. bowed with his face to the earth. This

  695. isn't just like knight of King Arthur

  696. getting on one knee. There is bowing

  697. with his face to the earth and paid

  698. homage. Okay, so that word homage,

  699. that's the one I was looking for. Uh

  700. because the Hebrew word for bow down

  701. does not necessarily have any

  702. connotations of worship, but the Hebrew

  703. word for homage does and it is shaka.

  704. And the outline of biblical usage is to

  705. bow down

  706. um to depress

  707. uh to bow down or prostrate oneself

  708. before a superior in homage before God

  709. in worship before false gods before an

  710. angel. Okay. So, it it has it is a word

  711. that has worship connotations. However,

  712. context is everything. So, David here is

  713. clearly not bowing down to Saul in

  714. worship.

  715. He's bowing down in deference, in

  716. reverence to Saul's position. It's the

  717. right thing to do. It's a humble thing

  718. to do. Okay. So technically the word

  719. study kind of failed here because you're

  720. like well

  721. uh when you go back to Esther that same

  722. word shaka well it could mean

  723. prostrating oneself in reverence or it

  724. could have worship connotations and so

  725. you still can't really make a decision

  726. whether or not

  727. it required Morai to worship Hmon right

  728. because no matter how bad Hmon's

  729. character is and no matter how much of

  730. it Morai had known if it's just simply a

  731. command to show deference he can do it

  732. even as as one who has the conviction to

  733. worship God alone he can do it just a

  734. physical expression of being in

  735. submission to a superior politically

  736. governmentally right so then we have

  737. this awkward decision to make so far

  738. without any more evidence because one

  739. side we don't want to accuse Mori of

  740. being unlawful here.

  741. And on the other side, he's definitely

  742. directly disobeying

  743. the command of the king.

  744. Remember, that's the real issue here.

  745. It's not just the command of Hmon. It's

  746. the command of the king. Let me read

  747. again. And all the king's servants who

  748. were at the king's gate bowed down and

  749. paid homage to Hmon. For the king had so

  750. commanded concerning him. But Morortei

  751. did not bow down or pay homage. And so

  752. even after looking at that word in a

  753. different context, we know that

  754. sometimes based on the context, it's

  755. okay to bend the knee. And in this

  756. situation, why didn't he? Well, let's

  757. read on. Verse three. Then the king's

  758. servants who were at the king's gate

  759. said to Mori, "Why do you transgress the

  760. king's command?"

  761. And and I agree with them that it was a

  762. transgression of the king's command. And

  763. I know

  764. that scripture says that to obey the

  765. king except if it requires you to sin.

  766. So,

  767. and then there's something still in me

  768. before even reading the next couple

  769. verses. I think he's like, "Yeah, but I

  770. don't really think Morai is uh someone

  771. who can't humble himself even before

  772. someone with a bad character." The king

  773. had a bad character too and actually be

  774. submissive in that way. Who taught

  775. Esther to be so submissive? Morai. Now

  776. all of a sudden he's just way out of

  777. character. Something didn't sit right

  778. with me. Well, let's go on. There's more

  779. evidence here. Verse four. And when they

  780. spoke to him day after day, and he would

  781. not listen to them, they just keep

  782. pressing him day after day after day.

  783. They told Hmon in order to see whether

  784. Morai's words would stand, for he had

  785. told them that he was a Jew. Remember,

  786. Morai and Esther have been keeping that

  787. secret. Esther has still not revealed at

  788. this point in the plot that she's

  789. Jewish.

  790. So, something pressed Morai

  791. to actually reveal his identity as a

  792. Jew.

  793. So, why does the author, whoever the

  794. author is, and ultimately God as the the

  795. ultimate author of these words, give us

  796. the detail that he's a Jew. What's

  797. happening here is that they keep

  798. pressing him for why he won't bow down

  799. and he tells them that he's Jewish as

  800. the reason.

  801. And so now we can see that it's as a

  802. result of his identity as a Jew.

  803. Now Hmon will use that as an example.

  804. See all these Jews are unwilling to be

  805. lawful because they're Jewish. That's

  806. his flimsy evidence and false testimony.

  807. But what's really happening here is

  808. worship conviction.

  809. And I want you to think about this.

  810. If the king, and we don't know, so this

  811. is just pure speculation, but it allows

  812. for us to think about what we would do

  813. in this situation. If the king commanded

  814. you to bow down to somebody and that

  815. person did not see it as worship, so so

  816. Hmon in this case, could you bow down to

  817. him if if Hmon's not requiring you to

  818. worship him? Yes, you could.

  819. What if Hmon

  820. was and you knew this

  821. looking at what you're doing as worship

  822. of him? Remember the story of

  823. Nebuchadnezzar and the golden idol this

  824. uh statue of him that he erected, right?

  825. It was it was very clearly stated in in

  826. the story in God's word by

  827. Nebuchadnezzar and his servants that

  828. whenever any kind of this musical

  829. instrument would play uh that everyone

  830. was to bow down and worship that that

  831. golden statue and on pain of death

  832. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused

  833. to do so and they actually get thrown in

  834. the fiery furnace and in this instance

  835. God saved them. But they said even if he

  836. doesn't we're not going to worship you.

  837. We'll worship God alone.

  838. So what we can say with certainty here,

  839. we don't know exactly what Hmon's

  840. attitude was, although we know that he

  841. is evil and we find out that he's an

  842. enemy of the Jews and that he has an

  843. evil character. Um, but what we know for

  844. certain is that Morortei would not bow

  845. down to Hmon because he was a Jew. So I

  846. don't think it's even reading between

  847. the lines or significantly speculative

  848. to say Morortei decided that it crosses

  849. a convictional boundary for him

  850. spiritually

  851. that that he would not bow down to him.

  852. And the way that I look at this is that

  853. Mori

  854. did not bow down to him because Hmon saw

  855. that as worship. And I wouldn't either

  856. even if it was a command even if it was

  857. a command uh that um the capital

  858. punishment was required. So death

  859. penalty was required for not doing it.

  860. Uh and I say I wouldn't by the grace of

  861. God. I wouldn't

  862. I would I would beg God to help me not

  863. to that I'd be willing to give up my

  864. life. I would not bow down to somebody

  865. who saw me worshiping them, who saw my

  866. obedience them as worship of them. I

  867. would say that's true. Even if the king

  868. in this situation didn't see the

  869. requirement legally to be worshiped, but

  870. just honor, if the person that's

  871. standing in front of you sees what

  872. you're doing as worship, it's a worship

  873. conviction not to do it. That kind of

  874. worship belongs to God alone. And so

  875. hopefully you're convinced along with me

  876. that the reason why Morortei did not bow

  877. down to Hmon is because he refused to

  878. worship him. That that was the real

  879. issue behind it. So let's continue. And

  880. when Hmon saw that Morortei did not bow

  881. down or pay homage to him, Hmon was

  882. filled with fury.

  883. We see in verse 10 that this very Hmon

  884. by God is called the enemy of the Jews.

  885. And we'll get there. He's filled with

  886. fury.

  887. And he could have come up with a scheme

  888. just to have Morortei executed. But that

  889. wasn't enough.

  890. Verse 5. But he disdained to lay hands

  891. on Mori alone. So they made known to him

  892. uh so as they made known to him the

  893. people of Mori. Hmon sought to destroy

  894. all the Jews and the people of Morortei

  895. throughout the whole kingdom of

  896. Hasaweris. Uh in Yeah. So, so and

  897. remember the whole kingdom is like the

  898. whole known world. So, this is a global

  899. threat to the existence of Jews.

  900. And I was thinking about

  901. I don't is there any other people group

  902. that faces like Hollywood movie like

  903. global annihilation?

  904. I was thinking, you know, I'm not I'm

  905. not a historian and I'm so I'm not

  906. saying there there isn't, but how about

  907. twice because that's what Hitler wanted

  908. to do, too.

  909. Why why do the Jews face global

  910. annihilation

  911. uh schemes more than once?

  912. Some people groups have never faced that

  913. kind of annihilation. Why do they why

  914. did they back then? Well, we can say

  915. with certainty back then because they

  916. had certain convictions that the world

  917. stands against. Why does the world stand

  918. against that? What I want to make the

  919. point of here is that it's not just Hmon

  920. behind this fury, but it's the enemy

  921. himself. And I want to show you that

  922. biblically. And so, we're going to go to

  923. a couple verses here. Um, let's start

  924. with Matthew 2 9-11. And this is the

  925. enemy's endgame. This is what he

  926. ultimately wants. And he is so bold that

  927. he wants God himself to worship him. And

  928. this is Matthew 4:9-11.

    Matthew 4:9–11

  929. Okay. Matthew 4:9-11. And he said to

    Matthew 4:9–11

  930. him, "All these I have given I give will

  931. give to you." Satan saying this to

  932. Jesus, "If you will fall down and

  933. worship me."

  934. I don't know if you guys enjoy when I

  935. bring up worship uh uh word studies or

  936. not, but I know that some of you do and

  937. you might be interested in this word uh

  938. worship here. It is the Greek word

  939. prouneo. Okay. Uh quite famous word in

  940. terms of uh scholarly work on on uh on

  941. the Greek. But let me read to you uh

  942. some of the ranges of meaning of pros

  943. kuneo. First one outline of biblical

  944. usage to kiss the hand uh of one in

  945. token of reverence among the orientals

  946. especially Persians to fall upon the

  947. knees and touch the ground with the

  948. forehead as an expression of profound

  949. reverence

  950. very similar to shaka isn't it in range

  951. but it also can mean the new testament

  952. by kneeling or prostration to do homage

  953. or make obesence whether in order to

  954. express respect or make supplication

  955. used an homage shown to men of beings

  956. and beings of superior rank to kiss the

  957. hand. Oh, excuse me. I I I my eye

  958. skipped up here. But also

  959. in worship of God, Christ, heavenly

  960. beings or demons.

  961. So, prosecune and shaka are synonyms

  962. across two different languages.

  963. And obviously in this situation, Satan

  964. is tempting Jesus to worship him. And he

  965. said to him, "All these I will give to

  966. you like all the kingdoms and their

  967. glory if you will fall down and worship

  968. me." Remember this is

  969. a created being

  970. asking Jesus,

  971. an uncreated person who is both fully

  972. human and fully God to worship him.

  973. And then then Jesus said to him, "Be

  974. gone, Satan, for it is written, you

  975. shall worship the Lord your God, and him

  976. only shall you serve." And then the

  977. devil left him, and behold, the angels

  978. came and were ministering to him.

  979. So you can see very clearly that Satan's

  980. endgame is for even God himself to

  981. worship him. And so anyone that is

  982. serving the enemy uh will be serving

  983. that ultimate end. Let's go to John 8:44

    John 8:44

  984. as well.

  985. John 8:44.

    John 8:44

  986. This is what Jesus says about the

  987. Pharisees who are seeking to murder him.

  988. You are of your father, the devil. That

  989. establishes that there are some people

  990. who are serving Satan. In this case,

  991. they say they're serving God. So like

  992. their father, they're both liars and

  993. murderers. And your will is to do your

  994. father's desires. He was a murderer from

  995. the beginning and does not stand in the

  996. truth because there is no truth in him.

  997. When he lies, he speaks his out of his

  998. own character. For he is a liar and the

  999. father of lies.

1000. So we've established that Satan wants

1001. even God to worship him. And we've

1002. established that he has servants that

1003. are just like him. Okay, let's go to

1004. Hebrews chapter 2:14. Just how many

1005. people are serving him. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

1006. 2, uh, verse 14. Since therefore the

1007. children share in flesh and blood, he

1008. himself likewise partook of the same

1009. things. Speaking of Jesus, that through

1010. death he might destroy the one who has

1011. the power of death, that is the devil.

  1012. Let's also go to 1 John 5:19.

    1 John 5:19

1013. We know that we are from God and the

1014. whole world lies in the power of the

  1015. evil one.

1016. Now, I believe that some people are more

1017. involved in serving the enemy than

  1018. others.

1019. I think some people are knowingly

1020. involved in serving the enemy and

1021. actually intentionally worship him. I

1022. think some people are unknowingly

1023. involved. But when we're commanded not

1024. to be conformed to the world, but rather

1025. be transformed by the renewal of our

1026. minds, the world is being conformed. And

1027. unless you have the Holy Spirit living

1028. in you, you cannot but be conformed. But

1029. the world is not being conformed to the

  1030. world's standards. It's being conformed

1031. to the enemy's power over the world's

1032. standards. And the it's very simple to

1033. understand the enemy in terms of his

1034. endgame. He will simply oppose anything

1035. that's about worshiping anyone other

1036. than him. Let me say that again. He will

1037. simply oppose anything that's about

1038. worshiping anyone other than him. But

1039. he's brilliant and crafty. So for a time

1040. if he can get you peel you away from

1041. worshiping God into worshiping something

1042. created, he can use that and pipelinely

1043. towards worshiping him because he's in

1044. control of the idols. that gives him

1045. power over you when you allow an idol to

1046. grow in your life. So

1047. even though I would not say biblically

1048. that everyone is serving the enemy and

1049. everyone of the world is serving the

1050. enemy to the same degree of subservience

1051. to him like for example the the

1052. Pharisees um the world is under his

1053. control and power according to the

1054. author of Hebrews and I don't believe

1055. anything has changed along those lines.

1056. So, let's go to Revelation 12:12 as

    Revelation 12:12

1057. well. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens, and

1058. you who dwell in them. But woe to you, O

1059. earth and sea, for the devil has come

1060. down to you in great wrath because he

1061. knows his time is short.

1062. Do you know that Satan has wrath? We

1063. talk about the wrath of God. We don't

1064. very often talk about the wrath of

  1065. Satan, do we?

  1066. But so you have

1067. you have multiple things that you've

1068. just been shown from scripture. For one,

1069. the enemy wants God, even God, to

1070. worship him. So his endgame is obviously

1071. everyone to worship him. That's how

  1072. prideful he is.

1073. He knows his time is short, but he's in

1074. control and he has servants. Hmon is

  1075. clearly one of them.

1076. And the enemy will always turn

1077. uh his servants against those who have

  1078. actual convictions in worship,

1079. especially if those convictions are

  1080. worshiping Jesus Christ.

1081. You can't worship God without worshiping

1082. Jesus Christ. It's what he says. And the

  1083. enemy has great wrath

1084. against anyone that won't worship him.

  1085. So he's evil, he's brilliant, he's very

1086. powerful, and he is furious.

1087. And if even Christians can sometimes do

1088. very crooked, sinful things when they're

1089. really angry and you let your anger get

1090. out of control, imagine what someone in

1091. whom there is no truth truth, who is a

1092. murderer from the beginning, who is just

1093. all the way evil, will do in his fury

  1094. and wrath.

1095. He's bent on destroying anyone he can't

1096. tempt to worship him effectively.

1097. So the enemy, you can see him seething

  1098. at Mori through Hmon.

1099. And that is why over and over again the

1100. people of God, the church, but also

1101. currently still the Jews because God has

1102. a remnant within them that he is going

1103. to convert uh or I should say complete

1104. in their own Judaism uh who he will

1105. bring to repentance and faith in Jesus

1106. Christ. That's required for everyone,

1107. Jews and Gentiles alike, if they want to

  1108. be worshiping the Lord.

1109. And so the enemy is just in furious

  1110. violent

1111. just enraged opposition to that.

1112. And when Hmon saw that Morortei did not

1113. bow down or pay homage to him, Hmon was

1114. filled with fury. So, are you going to

1115. be able to hide from that long term? I'm

1116. not accusing Morai of hiding. I think he

1117. was shrewd in not just announcing that

1118. he's Jewish. Um, because he knows this

1119. pattern. the people, the Jews knew that

1120. the world tends towards hostility

1121. towards them. Uh over time, worse and

1122. worse hostility and uh he was wise in

1123. telling Esther not to make that known.

1124. But in this situation, as Christians,

1125. we're commanded specifically not to hide

1126. our light. And so the the closer you are

1127. to Jesus and the more that you actually

1128. worship him openly, the more the enemy

1129. will oppose you. And he will oppose you

1130. not just by his servants but also

1131. tempting you personally to compromise in

1132. your worship. He will oppose you at

1133. work. And what by the way, it doesn't

1134. have to be him personally. It can be one

1135. of his uh servant demons, a fallen angel

1136. that's under his control or it could be

1137. him tempting you uh through his uh human

  1138. servant, right?

1139. to compromise in your worship, to move

1140. the goalposts of your conviction, to do

1141. so in relationship to how you parent

1142. your children, to do so in relationship

1143. to your place of employment, and it'll

1144. always have some kind of shiny object or

1145. worm on the hook that makes you want to

1146. bite. Oh, I can uh just have uh peace

1147. with my boss by being willing to submit

1148. in this area that I actually think would

1149. be sinful for me to sit in. Oh, I can

1150. fib on these reports. Oh, I can change

1151. this number. Oh, I can backdate this for

1152. the company's benefit. Oh, my boss is

1153. asking me to do this. Or you can just

1154. say no. Well, when you say no, you may

1155. fear that your boss will have a negative

1156. view of you and then you don't get that

  1157. next promotion.

  1158. I don't think there's anything wrong

  1159. with desiring a promotion.

  1160. I don't think there's anything wrong

1161. desiring to work towards being paid more

1162. for your work. But if you have to

1163. compromise your worship for it, right?

1164. It's never just like, "Oh, let me just

1165. compromise my worship today for no

  1166. perceived benefit."

1167. Why do people hide their Christianity

1168. from their friends? It's like, well,

1169. they're perfectly fine with with total

  1170. progressive liberal Christianity that

1171. has no worship convictions because it's

1172. not out of line with being conformed to

1173. the world. It it doesn't contradict the

  1174. enemy's desires behind the world's

  1175. desire.

  1176. But if you're a bibleelving Christian

1177. and actually believe things that

1178. contradict the world and even convict

  1179. the world,

1180. just like Jesus said, the the world will

1181. hate you because it hated him first.

1182. So where are you being tempted to

1183. compromise in your worship? It's not

1184. just young men that f uh that um face

1185. temptation in uh the purity realm,

  1186. right?

1187. I don't know if this is a tactic of the

1188. enemy, but it seems to me like uh

1189. especially for young men, gyms and

1190. screens, gyms and screens is where

1191. you'll face the most temptation. Uh at

1192. gyms, you'll find a whole lot of women

1193. dressed in a way that is um very

1194. tempting to look at. And on your screen,

1195. you have free access to just about any

  1196. kind of pornography.

1197. Send me tempt you then. Seems to me like

1198. the temptations uh to that don't come as

1199. often during the day as they come at

1200. night before you go to sleep. And what

1201. does Jesus say? If your eye causes you

1202. to sin, pluck it out. And does he

1203. actually mean mutilate yourself? No. He

1204. means take a ruthless approach to

1205. getting rid of such worship compromises.

1206. Doing that is bowing the knee to the

1207. enemy and paying homage to him. and it

1208. robs you of spiritual power.

1209. So, you got to be ruthless against that

1210. kind of sin, whatever that temptation

1211. is. If it's to gain social standing by

1212. gossiping with friends about somebody

1213. else, oh man, how many times we

1214. compromise on that because gossip tastes

1215. good to our ears. If that makes any

1216. sense. It feels good to listen to. Oo,

1217. I'm on the inside. They're telling me

1218. the special secret about it. What did

1219. Martin Luther say? Let your ears be

  1220. tombs for gossip.

1221. Let it die right there. And by the way,

1222. you don't just keep facing the same

1223. temptations over and over and over

1224. again. When you resist the enemy, he

1225. flees from you. And there are certain

1226. people people won't gossip to because

1227. the way that you respond is hostile to

1228. the gossip. Why are you telling me this?

1229. I don't want to hear that. Might only

1230. have to be one time that you say that.

1231. Stop gossiping to me. I don't want to

  1232. hear that. Oh, I wasn't. No one's ever

  1233. gossiping.

  1234. No one's ever gossiping, right? That's

1235. why the Bible has so many times where it

1236. talks about that as a fruit of the or

1237. work of the flesh because nobody ever

  1238. does it,

1239. right? And and maybe you don't do it

1240. when you're feeling fine, but man, we

1241. were talking about anger and there's

1242. fury and anger here too, although not as

1243. an example for us, but as an example

1244. standing the negative. uh consider the

1245. reality of that sometimes you're so

1246. emotionally compromised that there's low

1247. no control. You stepped out of the

1248. spirit, you're in the flesh, you're so

1249. angry and you say these words in anger.

1250. So again, the enemy doesn't come to you

1251. when you're like most prepared to resist

1252. the temptation to say things you ought

1253. not to. He comes to you when you're

  1254. already emotionally compromised. So

1255. what's the answer? Uh well, for me, the

1256. answer about more disciplined speech is

  1257. the fruit of self-control.

1258. the fruit of self-control which means

1259. being obedient when you don't feel like

1260. it obedient with your with your words

1261. and who can tame the tongue

1262. right and and James to paraphrase says

1263. out of it flow you know uh like a

  1264. life-giving river and also a poisonous

  1265. bitter

  1266. kind of stream so

1267. the tongue of remember we'll be held

1268. accountable for every careless word we

  1269. speak according to Jesus

1270. So it is of great value to gain the

  1271. self-control and it's when we say

  1272. self-control we mean it's a control the

1273. Holy Spirit gives us. It's not a fleshly

1274. so white knuckle I can do I can control

1275. my speech that counts for nothing.

1276. So there's all different kinds of ways

1277. that the enemy will tempt you to

  1278. compromise.

1279. I think one of the ways on screens

1280. that's uh not necessarily related to

1281. purity that he calls us that the end

1282. attempts us to compromise is just

1283. spending way more time on the screen

  1284. than we even should

1285. right and then oh we don't have enough

1286. time for prayer or enough we're just so

1287. busy too busy to read about a king who

  1288. died for us

1289. right so so busyness is idolatry too

1290. when it's so so busy you can't even

1291. spend time in prayer you can't even

1292. spend time worship worshiping the Lord.

1293. He can't even spend time reading about

  1294. him.

1295. Verse 6 again, but he disdained to lay

1296. hands on Morai alone. So as so as they

1297. made known to him the people of Mori,

1298. Hmon sought to destroy all the Jews and

1299. the people of Morortei throughout the

1300. whole kingdom of Asaweras. In the first

1301. month, which is the month of Nissan in

1302. the 12th year of the king of Hassaweras,

1303. they cast purr that is cast lots before

1304. Hmon day after day and they cast it

1305. month after month. and the 12th month uh

1306. excuse me the cassette month after month

1307. till the 12th month which is the month

1308. of Adar. I thought I'd show you a little

1309. graphic so that you can understand how

1310. the months of the Jewish calendar the

1311. lunar calendar uh compare to the months

1312. of the um Gregorian calendar. And um you

1313. can see here that the the month of

1314. Nissan is is right where we're at right

1315. now between March and April of the month

1316. of Adar is the month before also

1317. considered the last month. So I don't

1318. know if it's helpful to think of the

1319. month of Ador kind of Adar kind of like

1320. their December but it's it's the end of

1321. the year whereas Nissan is the beginning

1322. of the year. Another more important

1323. month is the month because that's the

1324. month in which Esther asks uh King

1325. Aasaweris to um give a decree to protect

1326. the Jews uh from this global threat

1327. basically. Um so what's happening here

1328. too is the way the ESV reads when I

1329. first read this made it sound like that

1330. um that they were casting lots before

1331. him and day after day and month after

1332. month till the 12th month. So like every

1333. day and every month all the way up to

1334. the month of Ador that's not actually

1335. what's happening. Uh but if you're just

1336. reading the ESV alone, you could get

1337. that idea. What's really happening is

1338. that the most the rest of the book of

1339. Esther takes place in the 12th year of

1340. uh uh of King Asaweras's reign. Um it's

1341. not that they spent most of the year

1342. casting lots. I don't know exactly how

1343. long they took to sp to cast these lots.

1344. Maybe it took them more than one day.

1345. But this is a great example as biblical

  1346. students when you're studying God's word

1347. closely of the value of reading other

1348. translations uh because you just don't

1349. know like this didn't seem like a

1350. controversial verse to me. So I didn't

1351. initially check to see what other

1352. translation options there were. Um but

1353. just the way it reads in my mind it's

1354. like oh they were casting lots day after

1355. day. Uh but that didn't really sit well.

1356. Uh Greg and I and Rebecca study to write

1357. questions for the the Bible studies on

1358. Wednesday nights. uh people gather on

1359. Wednesday nights at 6:00 to eat and

1360. study the God's word and to pray

1361. together and um it seemed like what was

1362. happening was happening in throughout

1363. this rest of the year and we're not

1364. talking about another year but if they

1365. had been casting lots all the way to the

1366. month of Nissan all the way to Adar

1367. that's a full year um then there would

1368. have had to be another year and be the

1369. 13th year of the reign of King Aseris

1370. and there is no mention of the 13th year

1371. uh so I thought I'd just I took some

  1372. screenshots of different translation

1373. options. And if when you're studying the

1374. Bible closely, might not be able to do

1375. this in like a faster read through. But

1376. if you're reading other translations,

1377. you say, "Oh, that's different. Let me

1378. look into that. Why is this translation

1379. so much different than the other one?"

1380. Um, and if you're only going to read

1381. one, what I would suggest, since the S,

1382. since ESV is a formal equivalent, like a

1383. word for word translation, I would

1384. choose something more paraphrastic. Um,

1385. and I I did that for you guys. Here is

1386. the CSB uh which is not as paraphrastic

1387. as the NLT. It's called a dynamic

1388. equivalent. And here's what it says of

1389. verse 7. In the first month, in the

1390. month of Nissan in King House's 12th

1391. year, the poor, that is the lot, was

1392. cast before Hmon each day in each month

1393. and fell in the 12th month, the month of

1394. Adar. That reads more like they kind of

1395. did it all at once, didn't it? Well,

1396. let's do one more. This is the New

1397. Living Translation of the exact same

1398. verse. He had uh the second verse uh 7.

1399. So in the month of April, so this is

  1400. more paraphrastic. They're already

1401. telling you that uh uh this month Nissan

1402. is April. During the 12th year of King

1403. Xerxes reign, lots were cast in Hmon's

1404. presence. The lots were called Purim to

1405. determine the best day and month to take

1406. action. And the day selected was March

  1407. 7th, nearly a year later.

1408. So the majority of the translations read

1409. as in this happening in a short period

1410. of time and not like throughout months,

1411. days all the way up to Adar, but that

1412. they decided that and that makes a lot

1413. more sense. Um considering that by the

1414. time um Esther asks for protection, it's

1415. only uh Shivan, which is like it's the

1416. end of Siobhan. So I guess we could say

1417. uh uh two two months later. So getting

1418. into June and we're still like 9 months

1419. or so away from Adar. So when the

1420. writers are sent out to say that Jews

1421. are allowed to defend themselves against

1422. this attack if it even comes um they are

1423. sent out 9 months in advance. Okay. So

  1424. that's that's what we're actually

1425. looking at there. Let's just continue

1426. from that. But it is an example of how

1427. reading other translations can be

1428. helpful. And I I would only consult

1429. translations that you uh feel are

1430. trustworthy. An example of that would be

1431. the CSV and the NLT after the the ESV.

1432. Um I I didn't mean after the ESV like

  1433. they're less trustworthy, but if you're

1434. reading from the ESV. So verse 8, then

1435. Hmon said to King Awares, "There is a

1436. certain people scattered abroad and

1437. dispersed among the peoples in all the

1438. provinces of the kingdom. Their laws are

1439. different from those of every other

1440. people and they do not keep the laws so

1441. that it is not to the king's profit to

1442. tolerate them. All right? It was someone

1443. else that said this, but the the thought

1444. had occurred to me as well. Uh someone

1445. in the Bible study said, and I want to

1446. give them credit, but I forget who it

1447. was. Uh that this reminds them of the

1448. kangaroo trial that the Pharisees put

1449. Jesus through. You may have thought that

1450. as well. um because they bring false

1451. witnesses against him as well who twist

1452. his words um to mean something they

  1453. never meant.

1454. So you can see the enemy's tactics here

1455. as well. Accuse the Jews of lawlessness.

1456. And interestingly, remember how just

  1457. earlier in chapter 2, I didn't give the

1458. team this verse, but um it says that uh

1459. verse 23 of chapter 2 about the assassin

1460. assassination plot of the two Unix

1461. against King Aquarius that Mori thwarted

1462. um when the affair was investigated

1463. and found to be so, the men were both

1464. hanged on the gallows. So, it was

  1465. investigated. There's no investigation

1466. here. Let's read on. So evidently

1467. there's just this whole group of lawless

1468. people that never submit to the king.

1469. If it pleases the king, verse 9, let it

1470. be decreed that they be destroyed, and I

1471. will pay 10,000 talents of silver into

1472. the hands of those who have charge of

1473. the king's business that they may put it

1474. into the king's treasuries. So the king

1475. took his signate ring from his hand and

1476. gave it to Hmon, the Agite, and the son

1477. of Hammedtha. Hamtha, the enemy of the

1478. Jews. God calls him the enemy of the

1479. Jews. So I'll come back to that in a

1480. moment. And the king said to Hmon, "The

1481. money is given to you, the people also,

1482. to do with them as seems good to you,

  1483. right? It's it's obviously a bribe. It's

1484. all that is. Greece payment to do this

1485. evil thing." And there's no

  1486. investigation.

1487. Not even a question to ask like, "Well,

1488. who are they and what exactly are doing

1489. and what are their laws and how much in

1490. conflict are they?" Nope. I don't even

1491. need your money. Go ahead and do it. Do

1492. what seems good to you.

1493. Why? Why would at one point the king

  1494. investigate an assassination plot

1495. against his life? Obviously a very

1496. serious threat to him. And another

1497. situation, yeah, go ahead. I don't want

1498. people like that in my kingdom.

1499. And I don't have an absolute answer to

1500. you, but I I do know that that is being

1501. deceived like that uh is easier for the

1502. enemy to do if you have an idol in your

1503. life, especially if that idol is your

  1504. own vain glory.

1505. What King Asaware cares more about than

1506. anything else is self arrandisement,

1507. glorifying himself. That's how the whole

1508. book starts. I'm just throwing 180 days

1509. of self glor glorifying parties. Um, and

1510. so all the enemy has to do through Hmon

1511. is, "Hey, hey, there's this group that

1512. won't ever glorify you. They won't ever

1513. tell you how great you are. They won't

1514. they don't obey your laws. They don't

1515. care about your kingdom. They're not to

1516. in your best interest to keep around."

1517. and oh well since that's the only thing

1518. this king seems to care about. Yeah, go

1519. ahead and do it. Right. And that's the

1520. way every idol works. I think we should

1521. be careful here. Hmon is the real enemy

1522. of God's people. Doesn't even seem to

1523. know who these people are. And he

1524. certainly doesn't know that Esther is or

1525. the guy that saved his life is. He

1526. doesn't know. And so it's not out of

  1527. like pure self- originating

  1528. anti-semitism on Asorus's part that he

1529. agrees to this. It's just foolish uh

  1530. callousness

1531. and and a a result of his pride that he

1532. gives into this plot. But wherefore, as

1533. for Hmon, it's genuine hatred of the

1534. Jews, not just of Morortei. And the

1535. hatred stems from a place of they won't

1536. bow down to me. He couldn't care less

1537. about whether they bow down to the to

1538. the king. It's about that they won't

1539. worship him at the end.

1540. And so he's enraged them. Notice also

1541. interesting to me um he it's not a crime

  1542. of passion. It's premeditated.

1543. He actually has a detailed plot that he

1544. comes up with and he spends time having

1545. lots cast to find out the best most

1546. opportune time. And that's another piece

1547. of evidence here that the enemy is

1548. involved as well if you think about it

1549. because who's he casting lots to the one

1550. true God? No. Jews would do that kind of

1551. thing to determine God's will. Uh

1552. because they knew that he was in charge

1553. of every random decision. And so if they

1554. randomize it, they cancel human decision

1555. and bias in that and make it only and

1556. and for a time that was actually a way

1557. that God had designed for them to find

1558. his will. The lap the lot's cast into

1559. the uh the lot is capp cast into the l

1560. excuse me, the lot is cast into the lap,

1561. but it's every decision is from the

1562. Lord, right? There's no such thing as as

1563. random events. God's in charge of all of

1564. it. And they knew that. Well, this is

1565. the way pagans thought as well. And so,

1566. they're casting lots, but not to God.

1567. Remember, uh the idea of paying homage

  1568. and prostrating yourself doesn't

1569. necessarily mean to prostrate yourself

1570. before the Lord. It could be before an

1571. angel. And when you're doing that, in

1572. this some cases, the angel will tell

  1573. you, "Don't do it. I'm just a fellow

1574. servant." But if the angel is accepting

1575. that worship, this is either a servant

1576. of the enemy or the enemy himself, a

  1577. false god, a demon.

1578. So, you know, he's actually worshiping

1579. false gods here, which are all at least

1580. under the power of Satan or actually

  1581. Satan himself. So, I don't think you're

1582. reading between the lines too much to

1583. see the enemy's work behind the scenes

1584. here. He's involved in turning events

1585. against the Jews on a global threat

  1586. level.

1587. Verse 12. Then the king's scribes were

1588. summoned on the 13th day of the first

1589. month, and an edict according to all

1590. that Hmon commanded was written to the

1591. king satraps and the governors over all

1592. the provinces and all the officials of

1593. all the peoples to every province in its

1594. own script and every people in its own

1595. language as was written in the name of

1596. King Hasseris and sealed with the king's

1597. signate ring. Letters were sent by

1598. couriers to all the king's provinces

1599. with instructions to destroy, to kill,

1600. to annihilate all Jews, young and old,

1601. women and children in one day, the 13th

1602. day of the 12th month, which was the

1603. month of Adar, and to plunder their

1604. goods. A copy of the document was to be

1605. issued as a decree in every province by

1606. proclamation to all the peoples to be

1607. ready for that day. And the couriers

1608. were went out hurriedly by order of the

1609. king. And the decree was issued in Susa

1610. the citadel. And the king and Hmon sat

1611. down to drink. But in the city of Susa

  1612. was thrown into confusion.

  1613. So

1614. the enemy is using one of his servants

1615. who because he's a servant of the enemy

1616. is an enemy of the Jews. He just hates

1617. God's people. That's the way that works.

1618. and they're so and even though

1619. Hassawarees was not intentionally uh

1620. well I guess it was intentional but he

1621. did not know it was unbeknownst to him

1622. who was being threatened like this he

1623. just believed the falsehood uh that Hmon

1624. told him about the Jews but he's also

1625. very callous he doesn't get off at all

1626. he doesn't even investigate it and part

1627. of the callousness is just them sitting

  1628. down they're toasting to genocide that's

  1629. what they're doing

1630. I want you to consider in this situation

1631. uation, Hmon's negative example. Um, and

1632. we don't know that much about his life.

1633. This is basically all we know with

1634. certainty about Hmon's life. Uh, but

1635. he's filled with fury and then that fury

1636. goes cold. And another word for that is

  1637. it becomes bitter and

1638. it lasts. It doesn't just go away

  1639. overnight.

1640. There's no cooling down of the anger per

  1641. se.

1642. It just turns into a plot to destroy

  1643. everyone.

1644. And it's not as though the Holy Spirit

  1645. is not convicting

1646. uh Aasaweres and Hmon. We know that

1647. there's a form of the law written on the

1648. hearts of every person and it convicts

1649. them. The en the the Holy Spirit uses

1650. that to convict even enemies of God.

1651. So you have to consider like what what

1652. do you do when you're compromising like

1653. this to enastitize that sense of guilt

1654. and conviction because you will be

1655. convicted. The Holy Spirit loves you and

1656. he is guarding your faith and he knows

1657. what compromise is and he knows if

1658. you're doing it and he knows how to

1659. communicate to you through conviction

1660. that you are doing it and that

1661. conviction is uncomfortable when you

1662. don't want to change the compromise.

1663. Well, I've done this much already. I

1664. might as well continue, right? So, what

1665. do you do? Well, you got to anes what

1666. does anesthetize mean? You got to

1667. somehow find a way to suppress the

1668. feelings of guilt. You do.

1669. Alcohol may be one of the more powerful

1670. and effective ways to do that.

1671. The only problem is that it just brings

1672. even more guilt. I have a good friend. I

1673. have perpetual permission to share this.

1674. His name is Cole Smith. I'm going to be

1675. archery hunting with him. So, God's

1676. brought him back into my life in in a

1677. more regular way. And um uh after I had

1678. really repented in college uh just

1679. walking into rebellion, I had become

1680. very callous and was very angry but had

1681. repented and I shared my faith with him

1682. multiple times before that. But this

1683. time I I gave him CS Lewis's book and

1684. was reading uh uh Bible chapters with

1685. him and then because he'd seen such

1686. dramatic change in my life, I think God

1687. used that. And one of the things that

1688. we'd always do was binge drink together.

1689. Not always, but we we were hardcore

1690. parters. Um that is a compromise I

1691. started making not until after high

1692. school, by the way. Uh I didn't drink in

1693. high school at all. I'm not saying that

1694. has to be a biblical conviction, but um

1695. definitely my conviction was not to get

1696. drunk, but I hadn't even drank at all in

1697. high school. And then in college, I just

1698. gave in and I was so angry at God. And

1699. that's what the enemy used to help cause

1700. me to compromise there and and tempt me

1701. to compromise. Well, anyway, he would

1702. drink too, except his dad's an

1703. alcoholic. He basically lost his dad,

1704. ultimately lost him to death as a result

1705. of alcoholism as well, but had lost him

1706. even earlier in childhood. And when he

1707. drank and got drunk, he would experience

1708. piercing guilt in the morning. And he

1709. would tell me about it. And I said, "Do

1710. you ever experience that kind of

1711. piercing guilt when you're not

1712. drinking?" He goes, "No." So he knew in

1713. his heart he had to stop. Right. Um, but

1714. I think alcohol was being used both for

1715. pleasure, but also to anesthetize other

1716. feelings of guilt. the Holy Spirit was

1717. coming after him. And so I really think

1718. that's what the king and and Hmon are

1719. doing. They sit down to drink because

1720. alcohol will make you feel better about

1721. having made a decision that is

1722. unbelievably evil and everyone knows so,

1723. including their own hearts. So when

  1724. you're compromising, you're going to

1725. have to find ways to try to suppress the

1726. sense of guilt and the sense of

  1727. conviction.

1728. And those will keep you all the more

1729. hostage. they'll keep you all the more

  1730. hostage.

1731. Now, you may think this is kind of

1732. already a bad news sermon because wow,

1733. look at this. Uh Mori refuses to worship

1734. God and it doesn't go well for him

1735. instead of just like being in legal

1736. threat or something like that. No, all

1737. of a sudden death to all the Jews. Death

1738. to all the Jews. The same spirit exists

1739. today to anni complete annihilation of

1740. Israel continues to be alive and well

1741. because the enemy is alive.

  1742. But let's talk about

1743. something else. The wrath of God. You

1744. have the wrath of the enemy. You have

1745. the wrath of God. As Christians, you're

1746. kind of stuck between a heart rock and a

1747. hard place. You'll incur the wrath of

1748. the enemy if you worship God

1749. and you incur the wrath of God if you

  1750. don't.

1751. It might be the worst rock in a hard

1752. place I can imagine. Right.

1753. But which one would you rather be

1754. protected from in this situation? The

1755. wrath of God or the wrath of Let me put

1756. that question differently. That one

  1757. didn't make sense.

1758. Which one's worse? The wrath of the

1759. enemy or the wrath of God?

1760. Just think of Esther as a cautionary

1761. tale because it is. Who ends up

1762. experiencing the wrath of God in this

  1763. story? Hmon.

1764. Ammon's the one that gets impaled.

1765. That was the, you know, we say the

  1766. gallows. It's actually

1767. I I was going to say look it up but it's

1768. really actually impalement. Some of your

1769. translations even say that. So I want to

1770. go to another verse. Uh and this has

1771. become very unpopular to talk about and

1772. lots of false teachers have started to

1773. contradict the idea that God even has

1774. any wrath or that wrath is compatible

1775. with love. It's always good to be

1776. reminded of what scripture actually

1777. says. God does have wrath. His wrath is

1778. righteous and justified and it is what

1779. the cross protects us from. Let's look

1780. at that being said in Romans 5 and this

1781. is five chapter chapter 5 verse 9-11.

1782. Since therefore we have now been

1783. justified by his blood. Okay.

1784. Bloodshed's required much more shall we

1785. be saved by him from the wrath of God.

1786. What is it that saves you from the wrath

1787. of God? Faith in the bloodshed

1788. of Jesus Christ. Justified by his blood.

1789. Another way of putting that, faith in

1790. his death by crucifixion. For if while

1791. we were enemies, wait a minute, what who

1792. did who did Hmon say are the enemies of

1793. the king? The Jews. Who's Paul saying we

1794. were enemies of the king God. For while

1795. we were still enemies, for while we were

1796. enemies, we were reconciled to God by

1797. the death of his son. Much more now that

1798. we are reconciled shall we be saved by

1799. his life. More than that, we also

1800. rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus

1801. Christ, through whom we have now

  1802. received reconciliation.

1803. So, King Awares, careless and callous,

  1804. even if he wasn't

1805. anti-Semitic like Hmon was gives into

1806. the plot of Hmon, the enemy of the Jews,

1807. who's clearly being controlled by Satan,

1808. has Satan's, you know, handiwork all

  1809. over it.

1810. He require well anyone that's my enemy

1811. they have to die. And what does God say?

1812. How's God different than Xerxes?

1813. He sacrifices his own son so that those

1814. who are enemies of his

1815. could repent and have faith and believe

1816. and not have to die.

1817. So when you're being tempted to worship

1818. anything or anyone else or compromise,

  1819. remember who God is.

1820. God is a God who will sacrifice his only

1821. son who is God. So God is a God of

1822. sacrifice and that is why he's worthy

1823. worthy of our worship. And on top of it,

1824. we actually are it's not false testimony

1825. against us. My whole life has been just

1826. one big pile of evidence that I don't

1827. deserve to be forgiven and that I

1828. deserve the wrath of God. And by the

1829. way, so is yours according to the word.

1830. All your best works, filthy rags. mine,

  1831. too.

1832. So, we're enemies, hostile, alienated.

1833. And God, before we stopped being

1834. enemies, sacrifices his own son, pours

1835. his wrath out on his own son. So, who's

1836. worthy of uncompromising worship? Jesus

1837. Christ is, and nobody else. And you know

1838. that in your heart. And you may feel

  1839. burning conviction right now.

1840. That's coming from the Holy Spirit.

1841. and is to draw you to repentance and

  1842. confession of that compromise.

1843. So again, refusing to compromise your

1844. worship will eventually incure the fury

  1845. of the enemy.

1846. But God has overcome the world. In the

1847. world, you will have trouble. You will

1848. have persecution. The closer you get to

1849. Jesus, the more. But take heart because

1850. he says, "Greater is the one in you than

1851. the one who is in the world." Amen.

1852. >> So we have victory over the enemy and

1853. you can resist him and he will flee from

1854. you. But you ought not to think like

1855. maybe the very reason why you're

  1856. experiencing

1857. the opposition you're experiencing is

1858. because you have not compromised. And to

1859. those of you when you come to the table

1860. come to the table uh with a desire to be

  1861. strengthened to continue not

  1862. compromising.

1863. Today we'll be doing corporate

1864. communion, which I think is a beautiful

1865. picture of how we're forgiven. Even

  1866. though we're forgiven individually,

1867. we're partaking in this together as a

1868. communion of brothers and sisters. And

1869. so I will be coming back up after the

1870. next two songs and leading us in

1871. communion. You can go get your elements.

1872. But during these next couple songs,

1873. allow the Holy Spirit to minister to

1874. you. And if he's telling you, get rid of

1875. this thing, cut it out and be ruthless

1876. on this compromise. Nothing but good

1877. things. I was thinking about spring.

1878. What if it turned into springtime in

1879. your faith, new life, beauty, strength,

1880. hope as a result of just discontinuing

1881. the compromise? That can be yours, but

1882. you got to confess the sin first.

1883. Refusing to compromise your worship will

1884. eventually incure the fury of the enemy.

1885. But take heart. Jesus has defeated Satan

1886. through his death. Heavenly Father,

1887. thank you for this message. Thank you

1888. for your word. Thank you for your

1889. continual call to purity and worship.

1890. And I pray that we'd experience it now

1891. together. Um even for those who have

1892. just sacrificed it in their hearts right

  1893. now. So just potentially, Lord, I I I

1894. believe you accept their worship and

1895. delight in it. And I pray that you'd

1896. protect them from any further temptation

1897. to compromise. Again, I pray that you'd

  1898. highlight very clearly, very

1899. specifically what it is that is the

1900. compromise and that we get rid of that

1901. only and that we'd be protected from the

1902. spiritual battle where the enemy just

1903. keeps uh tempting us. I pray that we

1904. would resist him, that he would flee

1905. from us, and that we would experience a

1906. season of peace and of power and a

1907. forward movement in our faith. I pray

1908. these things in Jesus name. Amen.
