  1. I want to ask you a question today. I

  2. want to get right into it. I think you

  3. guys will enjoy the sermon because we're

  4. going to be surveying uh some of the

  5. gospels on a question you may have never

  6. asked yourself. But I want to ask you,

  7. if you've heard this, the phrase seeing

  8. is believing. And then in thinking about

  9. that, is there anything that's ever

  10. happened in your life that if you hadn't

  11. seen it, you wouldn't believe it? Like

  12. something that you witnessed, something

  13. that you saw that you really if someone

  14. told you, you wouldn't have believed it.

  15. I was thinking about things in my life

  16. that happened. I'll tell you one story

  17. and then I'm going to show you two

  18. pictures. So, three short stories about

  19. things I might not have believed if I

  20. hadn't seen them. Uh the first is a

  21. fishing trip. I think it's the first

  22. fishing trip that my boys had ever been

  23. on. Um there were six of us on the trip.

  24. It was Ben Johnson, an elder here, his

  25. daughter Penelopey, and uh three of my

  26. boys, Isaiah, Elijah, and Ezra and me.

  27. So, I think it was six of us. And we

  28. were on a small fishing boat.

  29. I think it was a Clakamus Reservoir and

  30. we fished like for the first hour didn't

  31. catch anything and then we limited out

  32. 20 trout that we caught and we would

  33. have caught more except the fish were

  34. getting stuck on the rim of the net and

  35. then flopping themselves off the hook

  36. and then back into the water and every

  37. time it happened there was some some

  38. bigger fish maybe like 12 to 15 in

  39. rainbow trout that had flopped

  40. themselves off and that happened and

  41. every time I was disappointed and the

  42. kids were disappointed but we're having

  43. a great time. Well, unbeknownst to me, I

  44. think Ben's sitting right here, I'm

  45. sitting here, Elijah's behind me, and

  46. Elijah's one of my most athletic boys,

  47. and they're all wearing uh life jackets,

  48. and it's, you know, when something all

  49. of a sudden slows down in life, like

  50. you're watching it almost in slow

  51. motion, and you can't feel like you

  52. can't react in real time. That's what

  53. was happening. Cuz I was watching, I

  54. forget who was reeling the fish in. Um

  55. might have actually even been me, but uh

  56. someone was reeling in what seemed to be

  57. the largest fish of the day. We saw it

  58. thick body, just a big rainbow trout.

  59. And you could tell the hook was barely

  60. in there when it would come out of the

  61. water. And then I think Ben was scooping

  62. down and picking the fish up out of the

  63. water and it was like rimchecking its

  64. body on the rim. And all of a sudden, I

  65. see the hook come out and I'm like,

  66. "No." Like in slow motion, no. And out

  67. of the corner of my eye, Elijah had

  68. evidently found another smaller net, no

  69. bigger than this. Superman jumping out

  70. of the boat to catch the fish.

  71. Fish is all the way out of the net just

  72. above the water. We're talking this

  73. happened in like 2 to 3 seconds time.

  74. The entire episode of what I'm telling

  75. you about. He catches the fish. There's

  76. six witnesses, five other than me. This

  77. actually happened. Catches the fish in

  78. the net. And I'm like, and you know how

  79. like uh the life jackets have those

  80. those um what's it called? straps around

  81. them. I just barely get one finger on

  82. the strap and just rip him out of the

  83. water and he's holding up the biggest

  84. fish of the day. I wish I had pictures.

  85. It all happened so fast, but it actually

  86. happened. All right, let me let this

  87. one's a little different. Let me ask you

  88. if you would believe that their uh

  89. blueberries grow as big as pingpong

  90. balls if I told you. I'm not going to

  91. tell you whether it's true or not. Let's

  92. raise of hands. Do you think I'm Do you

  93. think I'm trying to trick you? Or am I

  94. about to truly show you a real picture

  95. that you can go online and verify

  96. yourself? Am I faking it? Is it true

  97. that blueberries can get as big as

  98. pingpong balls? If you think with if you

  99. haven't seen I don't know if you've seen

  100. it or not, maybe you've researched this

  101. yourself. Uh, if you think blueberries

  102. can get as big as ping pong balls, raise

  103. your hand.

  104. Okay, so that's mo I would say. Now

  105. raise your hand if you don't think they

  106. can get that big.

  107. I think more more people raised their

  108. hand saying it's not that big. All

  109. right, show the picture.

  110. >> Guinness book world record blueberry. I

  111. made sure it wasn't AI. I looked on the

  112. actual Guinness website. That's an

  113. adult's hand, not a child's hand. That

  114. is a gigantic blueberry. It's the uh

  115. Eterna variety. Not I've seen

  116. blueberries pretty big, like quarter

  117. size. You can get them here in Oregon.

  118. Um honey, what are they called? I'm

  119. blanking now.

  120. >> Captain Blueberry.

  121. >> Chandler. Captain Blueberry. Yeah,

  122. Chandler blueberry varieties is one of

  123. the big blueberries. This is the eternal

  124. blueberry variety. All right. So, to be

  125. honest, I thought both I thought the

  126. blueberry and the the uh trout story was

  127. kind of cool, but I wanted a third one

  128. of something that you probably wouldn't

  129. believe unless you saw it. And I I just

  130. couldn't come up with one from my old

  131. life. I think some of the sports uh ones

  132. that I tell you guys are sort of tired.

  133. So I was like, eh, I won't tell a sports

  134. one. And so I just prayed, God, uh bring

  135. one to mind of something that maybe in

  136. my life, you know, personal examples are

  137. kind of relevant or uh uh relatable. And

  138. so this morning, and I'm I'm not going

  139. to tell you whether this is actually

  140. true or not, but you have to guess.

  141. Something happened this morning. I

  142. forgot my phone. My wife forgot her

  143. phone. We were already halfway down the

  144. road. And so we turned around and and

  145. drove home and uh to get the phone. I

  146. use the phone for like notes or like

  147. scripture references for sermons. So I

  148. needed it. And I walked to the front

  149. door. Um we live in Oregon City and we

  150. kind of live in the country now. And uh

  151. the front door is wide open, right? And

  152. I walk in and here's what you have to

  153. ask yourself. Is this true or not? I

  154. caught a bird in my hand

  155. this morning. Did I catch a bird in my

  156. hand this morning? Now, some of you know

  157. me thinking, "Oh, he's just talking

  158. about his chickens." I'm currently

  159. raising 14 baby chickens cuz I couldn't

  160. stop buying them. I mostly bought them

  161. based on how many eggs they lay and how

  162. cool they look. And so, I just had to

  163. keep buying more variet. So, we right

  164. now have 14 chickens in an indoor light

  165. coupe. So, is that the chicken that I'm

  166. talking about or am I talking about a

  167. sparrow? Okay, here's what I'm going to

  168. tell you. I'm telling you today, I

  169. caught a sparrow in my hand

  170. when I walked in to find to find my my

  171. phone. Is that true or not? Would you

  172. believe me? A sparrow?

  173. >> Yes.

  174. >> I've never caught a sparrow in my hand

  175. before. Let's show the picture.

  176. >> You can tell it was this morning or 365

  177. days ago cuz this is my Easter shirt.

  178. I wear once a year.

  179. Even my boys just thought it was one of

  180. the chicks. They're like, "Wait, no,

  181. that's a chicken." I was like, "No,

  182. that's a sparrow." And so I flew threw

  183. it and it flew off. Yeah. And I was

  184. like, "We're going to be late to church.

  185. I don't want this thing flying around. I

  186. don't know if they mix well with

  187. chickens cuz the chickens are in the

  188. house." And so I prayed and asked God,

  189. "Help me catch this sparrow." And I

  190. caught it in my hand.

  191. So there's a reason why I'm telling you

  192. these things because I've got another

  193. question for you. This one, not not a

  194. show of ra uh you don't need a show of

  195. hands, but I know we have some Bible

  196. nerds. I'm a Bible nerd myself. And so

  197. this is kind of a Bible trivia question.

  198. I think some of you will love this. Um

  199. the question is this. How many of the 11

  200. disciples, I could say 12, but Judas had

  201. already died at this point in the story

  202. when I'm asking this. How many of the 11

  203. disciples believed that Jesus was

  204. resurrected from the dead without having

  205. seen them with their own eyes? You don't

  206. need to shout it out. Just think about

  207. it. How many believed?

  208. Okay, I'll give you, this isn't that

  209. helpful of a hint, but I'll give you a

  210. hint. Um, you know, famously that one of

  211. them didn't. His name was Thomas, right?

  212. But he didn't believe until he saw it

  213. and he said, "I want to place my hands

  214. in the nail scars." Like he wanted he

  215. wanted absolute visual proof. How many

  216. of the other disciples believed that

  217. Jesus was resurrected without seeing it?

  218. How many? Okay, I see I see some

  219. numbers. I've already seen one person

  220. get it right, which I'm actually kind of

  221. surprised about um because it took me a

  222. while to research this question. So,

  223. part of what we're going to do today is

  224. look at all the endings of the gospels

  225. and see if we can find any evidence uh

  226. of how many disciples believed in the

  227. resurrection without seeing it. You

  228. might be surprised at the number. I

  229. think Thomas gets a kind of bad rap

  230. sometimes, almost unfairly in a way.

  231. Okay, we're going to start today. I'll

  232. start with prayer, then we'll get into

  233. Luke 24. Heavenly Father, thank you so

  234. much uh for

  235. helping us to believe in the

  236. resurrection. Uh none of us saw it and

  237. yet we believed and you said that's even

  238. more blessed than to see it and believe.

  239. Lord, I pray that we would hear from

  240. your word today that you would confirm

  241. it as true in our hearts. Even

  242. Christians sometimes struggle with doubt

  243. and even doubt in the resurrection. And

  244. Lord, unless you confirm that through

  245. your word by your Holy Spirit, um we

  246. can't overcome our unbelief. And so we

  247. want to uh hand our doubt to you. And

  248. Lord, for those that have not yet

  249. believed and not placed their faith yet,

  250. have not confessed their sin yet. I pray

  251. that you would work in such a way that

  252. you would confirm in their hearts that

  253. what your word is saying about your son,

  254. who he is, what he did, and how he was

  255. resurrected is true. that they would

  256. know truly in an undeniable way that

  257. this is true and that this is eternal

  258. life. I pray these things in Jesus name.

  259. Amen. All right, back to the question.

  260. Did any of the disciples believe that

  261. Jesus was resurrected from the dead

  262. without having to see it with their own

  263. eyes? I think it's an interesting

  264. question. Let's go to Luke chapter 24 to

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  265. start off. Okay. And I should you can go

  266. there in your Bible or um follow along

  267. uh on the screen. Okay. here and these

  268. are accounts of the resurrection or just

  269. little snippets of evidence about the

  270. disciples and their reaction um be

  271. before they actually saw him. So this is

  272. Luke 24 starting in verse 10-2. Now it

  273. was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary

  274. the mother of James and other women with

  275. them who told these things to the

  276. apostles.

  277. Okay, I'll back up one verse just to

  278. pick up the word 11 because all the 11

  279. are there. and returning from the tomb.

  280. Verse nine, they told all these things

  281. to the 11 and to the rest. Okay, so

  282. they're witnessing of of the empty tomb

  283. of the resurrection uh to these 11

  284. disciples, all of them except for Judas.

  285. And 11 says, "But these words seemed to

  286. them an idle tale, and they did not

  287. believe them. But Peter rose and ran to

  288. the tomb, stooping and looking in. He

  289. saw the linen cloths by themselves, and

  290. he went home marveling at what

  291. happened."

  292. So, the only evidence we get from that

  293. is that they did not believe based just

  294. on eyewitness testimony.

  295. Um, and it seemed like them to them an

  296. idol tale. But that's still not yet an

  297. answer because maybe there was a

  298. disciple that did believe after at first

  299. dismissing it as an idol tale. But as

  300. you just saw, all 11 of the disciples,

  301. even though they were told in advance by

  302. Jesus himself multiple times, it's

  303. shocking how many times Jesus says in

  304. the Gospels directly that he's going to

  305. be put to death and that he's going to

  306. rise again. He tells them, he tells them

  307. it's going to happen on the third day.

  308. And yet they think it's an idle tell

  309. when they hear about this. Okay, all 11

  310. still doesn't answer the question cuz

  311. what if there's evidence that maybe some

  312. of them did end up believing before

  313. seeing him? Okay, either way, they

  314. didn't believe just based on eyewitness

  315. testimony. Let's go to Mark 16. Okay,

  316. we'll go 9 through 16 here. Still asking

  317. ourselves the question, can we find any

  318. evidence that any of the 11 disciples

  319. believed uh that Jesus had risen from

  320. the dead without having to see it for

  321. themselves?

  322. Verse 9. Now when he rose early on the

  323. first day of the week, he appeared first

  324. to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast

  325. out seven demons. She went and told

  326. those who had been with him as they

  327. mourned and wept. But when they heard

  328. that he was alive and had been seen by

  329. her, they would not believe it.

  330. So again, an evidence that they it

  331. didn't just say that they did not

  332. believe it. They would not believe it.

  333. Okay. Verse 12. After these things, he

  334. appeared in another form to two of them

  335. as they were walking into the country,

  336. and they went back and told the rest,

  337. but they did not believe them.

  338. So now it sounds like two of the 11 to

  339. me saw him in another form. I don't know

  340. exactly what that means. It seems that

  341. Jesus uh disguised himself in terms of

  342. appearance. And so maybe that's what it

  343. means, but I'm not exactly certain what

  344. it means. Either way, they recognized

  345. him and they told the rest. They went

  346. back and told the rest, but they did not

  347. believe them. So 11 saw it uh or two two

  348. extra saw it and believed it. So now we

  349. already know two that only believed once

  350. they saw it. They tell the rest. Even

  351. once it's guys they were close buddies

  352. with and spent a lot of time with Jesus

  353. telling him, "No, it's really true."

  354. Still, they didn't believe it. Verse 14.

  355. Afterward, he Jesus appeared to the 11

  356. themselves as they reclining a table and

  357. rebuked them for their unbelief and

  358. hardness of heart because they had not

  359. believed those who saw him after he had

  360. risen.

  361. Okay? So Jesus actually tells them that

  362. their unbelief in not believing without

  363. saying shows their hardness of heart. He

  364. rebukes them for that. And you might

  365. think, well, that's the answer then

  366. because Jesus said that uh none of them

  367. believed based on testimony. However,

  368. there's one more passage we have to go

  369. to. Uh there is evidence that there was

  370. one of the 11 disciples who believed

  371. without having seen him. Okay, he seems

  372. to be getting rebuked here along with

  373. all the rest of them. There's some

  374. evidence for maybe why, but basically

  375. that's your answer. Let's go to John.

  376. John chapter 20

    John 20 chapter mention

  377. actually um

  378. I have the wrong verse written down. I'm

  379. going to have to find it here for a

  380. second. It might be earlier in John.

  381. Yeah, it's early in chapter 20. Uh so I

  382. won't have this one up. AV team. All

  383. right. This is John chapter 20 and uh

    John 20 chapter mention

  384. I'll read starting

  385. um in verse three maybe. So Peter went

  386. out with other disciple. Remember that

  387. first verse that I gave you. Even though

  388. they thought it was an idol tale

  389. including Peter, Peter wanted to verify

  390. it. So he runs the tomb. This is that

  391. story. So Peter went out with the other

  392. disciple. Uh when the gospel of John uh

  393. when the author of the gospel of John,

  394. who we believe to be John, um calls

  395. himself the other, he won't identify

  396. himself by name. We do believe it's

  397. John, but he says the other disciple or

  398. the disciple whom Jesus loved or the guy

  399. that's faster than Peter. You'll see

  400. that in a second. So Peter went out with

  401. the other disciples and they were going

  402. towards the tomb. Both of them were

  403. running together. But the other disciple

  404. outran the other disciple outran Peter

  405. and reached the tomb first and stooped

  406. and stooping to look in. He saw the

  407. linen cloth lying there. But he did not

  408. go in. Then Simon Peter came following

  409. and went into the tomb and he saw the

  410. linen cloth lying there and the face of

  411. the cloth which had been on Jesus' head

  412. not lying with the linen cloth but

  413. folded up in a place by itself. Then the

  414. other disciple who had reached the tomb

  415. first also went in and he saw and

  416. believed.

  417. Okay, he's seen the empty tomb. The

  418. question was, how many of the disciples

  419. believed without having seen Jesus

  420. personally before the resurrection? It

  421. seems like John the other disciple is

  422. the only one. However, verse 9, for as

  423. yet they did not understand the

  424. scripture that he must rise from the

  425. dead. Then the disciples went back to

  426. their homes.

  427. And as I already said, it seems like all

  428. 11 are getting rebuked for their

  429. unbelief based just on eyewitness

  430. testimony. Jesus said that it was a sign

  431. of hardness of their heart that they

  432. would not believe in his resurrection

  433. based exclusively on eyewitness

  434. testimony. Okay. Now for the main

  435. passage of today, the famous passage

  436. about Thomas. However, like I said, I

  437. think you can probably agree with me now

  438. that he somewhat gets an unfair

  439. treatment calling him doubting Thomas.

  440. When the evidence we just looked at, and

  441. all I could find, I'm I'm basically

  442. certain this is right, there's only one

  443. disciple that had any form of belief

  444. about the resurrection,

  445. and it's most likely John,

  446. you know.

  447. So, and I I really think it was John.

  448. So, let's go to John 20 starting in

  449. verse 24 and let's read the famous

  450. verses about Thomas and how he insisted

  451. that he would not believe unless he saw.

  452. 24 of John 20. Now Thomas, one of the 12

  453. called the twin was not with them when

  454. Jesus came. So the other disciples told

  455. him, "We have seen the Lord." But he

  456. said to them, "Unless I see in his hands

  457. the mark and of the nails and place my

  458. finger into the mark of the nails and

  459. place my hand into his side, I will

  460. never believe."

  461. Pretty bold statement what he's saying.

  462. Unless you give me absolute visible

  463. eyewitness proof and I get to

  464. investigate the nail scars, I will never

  465. believe. I want to stop there for a

  466. second and ask those of you and I don't

  467. know so I'm not assuming but those of

  468. you who in your own own heart uh would

  469. say right now no I do not believe that

  470. Jesus was resurrected from the dead and

  471. maybe you believe that he died as a

  472. martyr but you don't believe that he

  473. died as the son of God or that his death

  474. on the cross atones for sin or that your

  475. sin actually needs to be atoned for

  476. maybe you don't believe that I want to

  477. ask you about your heart attitude

  478. towards being willing willing to

  479. believe. Um,

  480. if God made it absolutely certain to you

  481. that it was true and you just knew that

  482. you knew in your heart, would you be

  483. willing to believe? Would you be willing

  484. to ask him to make it absolutely certain

  485. to you in your heart?

  486. Now, what he's not going to do, and what

  487. he hasn't done for anyone in this room

  488. who believes is

  489. allow us to witness with our eyes the

  490. resurrection of Jesus Christ. None of us

  491. actually saw that. None of us are

  492. eyewitnesses. In fact, if you think

  493. about it,

  494. the overwhelming vast majority of all

  495. people who are saved throughout all

  496. history and and time in the world did

  497. not see that.

  498. Okay, there's 500 maybe 500 plus people

  499. that witnessed Jesus resurrected. He

  500. appeared to that many people or more.

  501. Uh let's say that I I have it very hard

  502. to guess how many people believed this

  503. or how many Old Testament saints were

  504. saved by faith as well in whatever God

  505. had revealed to them at that time about

  506. his son.

  507. Let's say it was a 100 million. That

  508. would I think be unbelievably low guess

  509. that it's onlyund 100 million people

  510. throughout all of history. There's I

  511. would think more than a 100red million

  512. saved Christians on earth right now. But

  513. let's just say it was that okay

  514. uh 500 of a 100red million is like what

  515. 0.00005%

  516. of people.

  517. Have you ever wished that you were one

  518. of those 500 people? And have you ever

  519. thought you know I believe my faith

  520. would be different. I'd be more certain.

  521. I would be more bold in my witness. You

  522. may have friends here today that you

  523. invited, hoping that they come to faith

  524. because you love them and you want to

  525. spend eternity with them with God. You

  526. may be here totally disinterested in the

  527. gospel. It's more of a tradition than

  528. anything else, but maybe willing, okay,

  529. if it's really true, I'm willing to

  530. investigate it. I'm willing to think

  531. about it. Here's here's the thing. I

  532. think that's the only honest attitude to

  533. have because

  534. you may say, "I don't even know if God

  535. exists." But would you be willing to ask

  536. him if he does? And would you be willing

  537. to ask him this is true? And at least

  538. presumably hypothetically, if you're

  539. sort of hypothetically thinking maybe

  540. God exists, you might be willing to

  541. hypothetically believe that he has the

  542. ability to make you certain of something

  543. that you haven't seen,

  544. right? Can God do that? Can God make

  545. people certain? He's made me certain. I

  546. didn't become certain from him myself. I

  547. came certain became certain in a ve very

  548. straightforward but still miraculous

  549. way. I read his word and the Holy Spirit

  550. helped me to believe it and I believe

  551. it. And whether you believe me or not on

  552. this next statement, this is really true

  553. from the heart. I believe in the

  554. resurrection more than I believe in

  555. gravity. And I still don't jump off

  556. roofs.

  557. So I I really I think you all believe in

  558. gravity, right? Like you've watched it

  559. happen so many times. You've seen its

  560. effects with your own eyes. You believe

  561. that. But I I I would sooner disbelieve

  562. that gravity exists than I would

  563. disbelieve in the resurrection. In fact,

  564. I think the maybe the greatest

  565. compliment I've ever gotten in my life,

  566. the more that I think about it was a

  567. young guy that I was mentoring and he

  568. said, "Mate, I've noticed something

  569. about you. You've built your whole life

  570. around the resurrection." And I'd been

  571. the prodigal, so this isn't to my uh

  572. like I don't get any credit for this. I

  573. I lived a wild and rebellious life. Uh,

  574. honestly, I doubt there's anybody in

  575. this room that did worse things than

  576. I've done. And I'm not exaggerating.

  577. Those of you who know me know. Um,

  578. but he said, "You've built your life

  579. around the resurrection so much." And he

  580. said, "You know, I play this video game

  581. and when you kill the final boss, all

  582. the effects of that final boss are gone

  583. from the world." So, it's like a gloomy

  584. dark world and then you kill the final

  585. boss and it becomes a light world and

  586. all his evil effects are gone. And that

  587. made me think, you live your life in

  588. such a way that you would have no reason

  589. for anything in life if the resurrection

  590. wasn't true.

  591. Never heard anybody say that to anybody.

  592. And I looked at my life, I'm like,

  593. "Yeah, I didn't didn't before." God did

  594. something. It it's a both simple and

  595. impossible thing. And he made

  596. me in my heart believe that I was a

  597. sinner, that Jesus died for that sin and

  598. that I could be forgiven. And I

  599. experienced in my heart genuine

  600. forgiveness.

  601. I every day that I would wake up,

  602. especially towards the end of high

  603. school and in college, I would wake up

  604. feeling guilty. The more bad things that

  605. I did, and I was also very angry at God.

  606. So I was doing bad things to hurt him. I

  607. was doing them on purpose. I was even at

  608. times in prayer challenging him. You say

  609. that you're just, but you're not even

  610. going to give me any consequences for

  611. doing these terrible things. So, I'm

  612. going to do them even worse just to

  613. prove to you you don't even do anything

  614. that you say you do. Was that angry at

  615. him?

  616. So, I did a bunch of really evil things.

  617. And

  618. then he communicated through Matthew 13

  619. uh that I was a counterfeit Christian.

  620. And I was so so convicted. It felt like

  621. a knife, white hot knife to the heart.

  622. And I just knew I needed to repent of

  623. all of the evil things I had done. And

  624. now I was actually afraid of being

  625. condemned. I was afraid of all the guilt

  626. cuz he brought it to the surface. I

  627. would suppress it. A lot of the things

  628. that I did uh like alcohol and

  629. everything. I see a lot of young kids

  630. here, so I'm just not I'm going to leave

  631. everything basically PG. But a lot of

  632. things I did were to anesthetize and

  633. suppress my sense of overwhelming guilt.

  634. Just felt so guilty. more and more every

  635. year as a bad man. And

  636. and and then I repented of that because

  637. God caused me to showed me in his word

  638. that this is what you deserve for all of

  639. that sin. And I repented of it. And I

  640. don't know how else to describe it. And

  641. you could say, well, that's just your

  642. experience. But I

  643. had lost any sensation of the crushing

  644. weight of guilt. I had lost any

  645. sensation of the crushing. It was gone.

  646. And then I told my roommate, mind you,

  647. I've never seen Jesus resurrected from

  648. the dead. I have only heard about it in

  649. the word

  650. and I believe it. I believe it with

  651. certainty in my heart. I based my whole

  652. life on it. I told a friend and he'd

  653. seen a dramatic change in my life and

  654. within a week he had come to faith. And

  655. then he told me, "You know what? My dad

  656. was an alcoholic. I lost him because of

  657. alcoholism. And when I drank with you

  658. and binge drank, I would wake up in the

  659. mornings in tears because I was walking

  660. down the very same road that cost me my

  661. relationship to my dad. Sin he he was

  662. committing with alcoholism I was

  663. committing and I cannot no matter what I

  664. do, I can't get rid of the guilt. And

  665. now it's gone

  666. and I believe.

  667. His name is Cole Smith and he's still a

  668. good friend of mine and he's a deacon in

  669. a church in uh Springfield, Oregon.

  670. So, do you experience guilt? I

  671. experience guilt. I don't believe anyone

  672. doesn't. We can suppress it. We can

  673. repress it. We can try to anestize it.

  674. Take some powerful things to neest it.

  675. Those don't make it any better. They

  676. always make it worse.

  677. But

  678. is your attitude like Thomas's? Unless I

  679. see absolute proof, I will never

  680. believe. Let's continue. Verse 26. 8

  681. days later, his disciples were inside

  682. again, and Thomas was with them.

  683. Although the doors were locked, Jesus

  684. came and stood among them and said,

  685. "Peace be with you."

  686. Do you believe that?

  687. >> I believe that.

  688. But the way that it's written makes it

  689. sound impossible, cuz it is. Cuz you

  690. don't just walk through doors and don't

  691. just walk through walls and there's no

  692. other way into the house. And he just

  693. stands among them.

  694. Resurrection. Jesus doesn't follow the

  695. rules anymore, does he? I love him for

  696. it. Eight days later, his disciples were

  697. inside again and Thomas was with them.

  698. And although the doors were locked,

  699. Jesus came and stood among them and

  700. said, "Peace be with you."

  701. It's a humble flex, isn't it? Just,

  702. "Hey, I'm here." And he knows exactly

  703. what he's doing. And then he said to

  704. Thomas, first person he addresses after

  705. just appearing in the room with locked

  706. doors. People didn't walk through walls

  707. back then either.

  708. Put your finger here and see my hands

  709. and put out your hand and place it in my

  710. side. Do not disbelieve but believe.

  711. Thomas said, "I will never believe."

  712. Jesus said, "Do not disbelieve but

  713. believe."

  714. Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my

  715. God." And Jesus said to him, "Have you

  716. believed because you have seen me?

  717. Blessed are those who have not seen me

  718. and yet have believed."

  719. Thomas was blessed for getting to see

  720. Jesus and see his nail scars.

  721. Jesus saying, "The blessing for

  722. believing without absolute proof is even

  723. greater."

  724. So, just to the Christians in the room,

  725. I know you already have a celebratory

  726. attitude. I know not everything in life

  727. is good. I know some things in life have

  728. been really hard, especially lately in

  729. our church, especially

  730. we lost someone we love very much.

  731. But

  732. there's still this room to celebrate. I

  733. want you to I want you to think about

  734. this. I want you to think about

  735. you're more blessed than Thomas for

  736. believing without seeing.

  737. So that ought to show you right there

  738. that the Lord of all the universe, the

  739. God who died for you, Jesus Christ is

  740. his name,

  741. said and and therefore it is certain

  742. that it's better to not be one of the

  743. 500 people

  744. among whom it seems at least among the

  745. 11 who were closest to him, who spent

  746. the most time with him, who heard him

  747. say most often and could even ask

  748. real-time questions that he would die

  749. and rise Again, only one believed or had

  750. some kind of form of belief and didn't

  751. doubt. And even he did not believe based

  752. on it just being reported to and

  753. reported to him. And yet everyone here

  754. who's saved has believed solely based on

  755. the reporting of those apostles and

  756. disciples and the men who wrote

  757. scripture. How blessed are you for

  758. believing that? And search your heart.

  759. Are is it not exactly like me? You know

  760. that you know that it's true.

  761. You know that you know that it's true.

  762. You just know that he was resurrected.

  763. You know that he can walk through walls.

  764. It's not hard for you to believe that.

  765. It's impossible for you not to cuz it's

  766. just you would like be denying the main

  767. thing that's true. Now, I do know that

  768. sometimes Christians struggle with doubt

  769. about the resurrection. And what should

  770. you do with that? Well, let's go to one

  771. of the very last piece uh pieces of

  772. evidence from scripture. This is and you

  773. may have never seen this. It's kind of

  774. wild because the first question was did

  775. any of the disciples believe uh without

  776. seeing? Let me ask you my last question

  777. for the day. Did any of them not believe

  778. or have doubt even after seeing?

  779. Cuz if that's the case, if I can show

  780. you even one verse where one of the 11

  781. or more did not believe, even after

  782. seeing him alive, appear, eat with them,

  783. talk with them, let somebody else put

  784. their hands in his nail scars and the

  785. side in his hands,

  786. didn't believe, then seeing Jesus alone

  787. must not be fully effective to cause you

  788. to

  789. Also going back to the story about uh

  790. Thomas,

  791. he saw that it was Jesus. He believed

  792. that it was Jesus. But what does he say?

  793. He says, "My Lord and my God."

  794. Was it by sight that Christ's divinity

  795. was revealed to him? Cuz Christ is not

  796. yet glorified. He has a resurrection

  797. body, but it doesn't say anything about

  798. him looking like Revelation Jesus where

  799. he's just face shining as bright as the

  800. sun. You see him, you fall dead cuz

  801. there's no more veiling of his glory.

  802. So, how exactly did Thomas know that

  803. Jesus was God? Well, we know exactly

  804. according to Jesus that that is only

  805. revealed to you by the father. That's

  806. what he says to Peter when Peter has the

  807. confession.

  808. You're the Christ, son of the living

  809. God. You're the Messiah. Everyone else

  810. says, "Oh, he's Elijah, some prophet,

  811. this and that. He's John the Baptist."

  812. No, you're the Christ.

  813. So, that according to Jesus is only

  814. revealed to you by the Father.

  815. Now, but what if what if there were some

  816. of the 11 that didn't even believe after

  817. seeing it? Let's go to Matthew 28:16.

    Matthew 28:16

  818. Now the 11 disciples disciples went to

  819. Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus

  820. had directed them. This is likely the

  821. mount of ascension. Um where Jesus

  822. ascended into heaven just

  823. in front of their eyes right

  824. that ascension doesn't appear in the

  825. gospel gospel of Matthew. You have to

  826. find it somewhere else. But that's in

  827. general what we believe is happening

  828. here. But this is what Jesus said. And

  829. when they had when they saw him, they

  830. worshiped him. But some doubted. Let me

  831. read those two verses again. Now the 11

  832. disciples went to Galilee to the

  833. mountain to which Jesus had directed

  834. them. And when they saw him, they

  835. worshiped him. But some doubt it.

  836. Now, put your student of the Bible hat

  837. on. And you probably can't say this with

  838. absolute certainty before you get to

  839. study it yourself. Um, but just

  840. intuitively, do you believe from all

  841. your knowledge from the New Testament

  842. that the apostles, the 11 disciples

  843. became apostles, that every one of them

  844. was saved? It's not a trick question. I

  845. think they all were, but at this point,

  846. some of them doubted,

  847. right? I have no reason to believe that

  848. they weren't. And my best evidence would

  849. be from Acts chapter 2, where they're

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  850. all indwelt with the Holy Spirit. You

  851. cannot be indwwellled with the Holy

  852. Spirit without truly believing. But at

  853. this point, sometime before the

  854. ascension, some of the 11 disciples who

  855. have definitely see them seen him and

  856. are looking at him right now, who

  857. witnessed the crucifixion, know that he

  858. was put in a tomb and was actually dead

  859. are they're looking at him still

  860. doubted.

  861. So that shows you that actually faith,

  862. faith itself must not be a thing that

  863. can just be accomplished by sight. There

  864. must be something wrong with us where

  865. seeing isn't even believing.

  866. I believe I caught a bird this morning.

  867. I remember it. I was an eyewitness to

  868. the happening. I have picture evidence

  869. of it. I believe that there's

  870. blueberries as big as ping pongs. And I

  871. believe that my son can jump out of a

  872. boat and catch a big trout. I saw it

  873. with my eyes. I I find it hard to

  874. believe that you could see something and

  875. just not believe it. But here it is.

  876. Here it is. Okay. So, what I've proven

  877. so far is that basically almost none of

  878. the disciples sans one believed without

  879. seeing and even some didn't really fully

  880. believe after seeing. Okay? And that's

  881. the men who became the apostles. So, if

  882. you're here today and you're already a

  883. Christian, but you have some doubt in

  884. the resurrection, what should you do?

  885. Last verse and we'll conclude.

  886. Um, this is from Acts 1:8.

    Acts 1:8

  887. Jesus says this,

  888. Acts 1:8, "But you will receive power

    Acts 1:8

  889. when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  890. and you will be my witnesses in

  891. Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria

  892. and to the end of the earth."

  893. Being Christ's witnesses to the ends of

  894. the earth was not just about the 11

  895. disciples, wasn't it? Was it? It's also

  896. about us. From the perspective of the

  897. ancient near east in Jerusalem, we're at

  898. the ends of the earth in Oregon,

  899. right? And yes, I know how to say it

  900. properly.

  901. I'm not going to prove it though. You

  902. just have to believe it by faith.

  903. So,

  904. what is this saying about the power to

  905. be a witness? Which obviously means you

  906. you believe cuz you have this power to

  907. be a witness. If you fast forward it to

  908. Acts 4, the believers pray that they

  909. would have a bolder witness and be

  910. filled with boldness and they're asking

  911. the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit

  912. shows up and they all become bold.

  913. Did you ever think, I'm not assuming you

  914. did, did you ever think that the reason

  915. why the apostles are so bold is because

  916. they saw it? Some of them saw and doubt

  917. it. Doubters aren't bold.

  918. Doubt will undermine your boldness and

  919. witness. So seeing isn't even where our

  920. boldness comes from. And Jesus said,

  921. "It's more blessed to believe and not

  922. see." And you you believe, don't you? I

  923. know many of you. I believe you believe

  924. and you didn't see. So you have a

  925. greater revelation.

  926. And it's not going to help you to see

  927. because we already saw that those that

  928. saw still doubted. And yet what Jesus is

  929. saying here is that the power to be

  930. witnesses and in this case I'm just

  931. speaking to Christians comes from the

  932. Holy Spirit. So if you mix in Romans 10

  933. and I was to answer the question, how

  934. does someone come to faith? I would say

  935. Paul and God's word very clearly says by

  936. hearing God's word preached. And then I

  937. would add to that as mediated by the

  938. Holy Spirit. And if you're asking how

  939. come I I want to be bold. I have a

  940. friend at work that's not saved. I have

  941. a friend here that I want to tell the

  942. gospel, but I've never told the gospel.

  943. I want to show them. I want to give them

  944. my testimony, but I'm afraid. How can I

  945. become bolder? The ministry of the word

  946. of God mediated in the power of the

  947. spirit. It is a function directly of the

  948. Holy Spirit of God who is God living in

  949. you that you would have a bold witness.

  950. It's something he shows to the eyes of

  951. your heart that even sometimes if the

  952. eyes of your head see it will still

  953. disbelieve. But then if he shows it to

  954. the eyes of your heart, if he makes it

  955. clear to your inner person, if if he's

  956. living in you, it's called the inner

  957. witness of the Holy Spirit, then you

  958. just know that you know that you know

  959. and you can understand what I mean that

  960. we believe that he has risen more than

  961. we believe in gravity.

  962. So don't say to yourself, "If only God

  963. had done more than I would believe."

  964. God's already done more for you than he

  965. did for the 500 eyewitnesses because you

  966. believe without seeing. And some of them

  967. didn't even believe was seeing. And if

  968. you're here and you're not sure,

  969. are you in that place that I consider

  970. dishonest? Because why would you not

  971. want to believe something that's true?

  972. And why would you say for certain that

  973. it's not true without asking God if it

  974. is? And if he can do what I just said,

  975. why not why not find out? Why not ask

  976. him? And the way that you would do that,

  977. even if it doesn't happen for you today,

  978. and I hope it happens for you today, I

  979. want to pray a prayer with you and then

  980. conclude.

  981. The reason, the way you would do that is

  982. the very same thing. Ask God to show you

  983. it to be true to the eyes of your heart,

  984. that inner person, that epicenter of

  985. where you make decisions about what

  986. you're going to believe, whether you've

  987. seen it or not. Ask him to make it

  988. clear, absolutely certain in your heart

  989. through his word.

  990. So don't say I don't believe without

  991. even investigating his word because God

  992. has chosen that only his word as

  993. mediated by the Holy Spirit brings

  994. faith. Not even sight brings faith.

  995. That's not where it comes from. That's

  996. not even what revealed to Thomas that

  997. Jesus is God.

  998. Right? It just overcame his

  999. unwillingness to believe. And maybe

1000. there was a part of Thomas that didn't

1001. want to be tricked. And it's like, I

1002. want to believe, but I got to see it.

1003. You got to prove it. Maybe you feel that

1004. way, too. As someone who doesn't yet

1005. believe, maybe you feel like, well, can

1006. you just prove it to me? He's not going

1007. to do that by sight. And that's not

1008. where faith comes from, but he will do

1009. it through his word, by the power of the

1010. Holy Spirit. And why not ask for him to

1011. make that clear to you even right now?

1012. As I pray for you, I want to pray a

1013. prayer for both Christians who may be

1014. struggling with doubt of any kind, maybe

1015. even doubt as deep as doubt in the

1016. resurrection. I want to pray a prayer

1017. that the Holy Spirit would fill you with

1018. boldness this Easter. And I want to

1019. challenge you, especially if God's

1020. already put it in your heart, to share

1021. the gospel clearly without mincing

1022. words, without removing the offense that

1023. people need to be forgiven for their sin

1024. or they cannot be saved. What did Jesus

1025. him sayself say? repent and believe.

1026. One of the reasons I think one of the

1027. reasons scripture says that people would

1028. not believe is it requires the humility

1029. of admitting that you don't deserve to

1030. be saved. That you need to confess your

1031. sin, that you are guilty, that God's

1032. right, and that you need to be forgiven

1033. and that he's just, and he can't just

1034. leave the sin unpunished. And so, he

1035. punished his son instead of you. And if

1036. you believe that, you get his

1037. righteousness even though all he got was

1038. your sin and the consequence for it.

1039. Believe that and you're saved. For if

1040. you confess with your mouth that Jesus

1041. is Lord and believe in your heart, your

1042. heart doesn't have eyes. But if you

  1043. believe in your heart

1044. that he raised God raised him from the

1045. dead, you will be saved. It is that

1046. simple. There's nothing you have to do,

1047. nothing you have to accomplish. Just as

1048. you are right now, confess with your

  1049. mouth.

1050. Say, "I believe that Jesus is Lord."

1051. Make him the Lord of your life. And then

1052. believe in your heart that God raised

1053. him from the dead. If God has done that

1054. for you today, you are saved. And so I

1055. want to lead us in a prayer both for

1056. those who are doubting and those who

  1057. have never yet believed.

  1058. Heavenly Father,

1059. I pray that you would help us in your

  1060. unbelief.

1061. I pray that you would make us willing to

1062. believe more deeply as Christians.

1063. I pray that you would settle our doubts

1064. and turn them into certainties by the

1065. power of your word, through the

1066. mediation of your Holy Spirit. And for

1067. those who are not yet saved, it is not

1068. complicated to be saved. It is not

1069. simple in the sense that it's not just

1070. something we can just say, well, I got

1071. to see it and then I'll believe it. If

  1072. you show me, I'll believe. It's

1073. something that you have to make clear to

1074. our hearts by your Holy Spirit.

1075. It's something that takes your

1076. supernatural power. And so this prayer

1077. that you could follow along here and

1078. that people could surrender in their

1079. hearts to you, Lord. I pray that they

1080. would be willing to pray it and that

1081. this Easter 2026 would be the day of

  1082. their salvation.

  1083. Here's the prayer.

  1084. Lord,

  1085. I admit that I'm a sinner.

1086. I ask for forgiveness for all my sin.

1087. I believe that Jesus died on the cross

1088. and I believed that you raised him back

  1089. to life.

  1090. Lord, please save me.

1091. Even as we continue praying and speaking

1092. to the Lord, if if you made that

1093. commitment in your heart, if you find

1094. yourself believing today, we want to

  1095. know.

1096. We want to help you. We want to come

1097. come alongside of you and be of use to

1098. you in your continued growth, but also

1099. just encouraging you in your newfound

1100. faith and salvation. So, please let us

  1101. know,

1102. Father. Now, as we continue in worship,

1103. we continue as those who have been

1104. redeemed. Those who, though they die,

1105. will have everlasting life with you. We

1106. celebrate you because you are the author

1107. of life, conqueror of death, and you are

  1108. the resurrection.

  1109. Amen.
