  1. Now is the time. Uh the only other

  2. announcement is we have our uh men's

  3. gathering on the 25th. That's this

  4. coming Saturday at 9:00 a.m. here at

  5. church. And uh really looking forward to

  6. that. We'll be having a continental

  7. breakfast just like the last one and

  8. just show up at 9:00 or a little bit

  9. early. And um last time we had an event

  10. related one too where there was a

  11. teaching and then we went out and uh did

  12. some firearm practice. We won't be

  13. having an activity this time, just the

  14. teaching and and fellowship. So, um,

  15. that's, uh, that's it, I think. All

  16. right, we are in Esther 5. Let me, uh,

  17. pray and we'll get right into it.

  18. Heavenly Father, thank you for the book

  19. of Esther. Thank you for your word and

  20. how you wrote it for our encouragement,

  21. for our conviction, to challenge us, to

  22. console our hearts to just strengthen us

  23. and build us up. Uh, we love your word.

  24. It is supernaturally powerful and unlike

  25. any other uh book or words in the world.

  26. And so, we want to surrender our hearts

  27. to what you have to say. We pray that

  28. you would use your word to convince us

  29. by your spirit of the ways in which you

  30. want to um develop our character and our

  31. dependence on you especially today. I

  32. pray these things in Jesus name. Amen.

  33. Uh I want to tell you a short story

  34. about a renovation that I just started.

  35. Uh most of you probably know we bought a

  36. new house. I say it's mostly my dream to

  37. live in the country on five acres.

  38. Although uh it wasn't something that it

  39. was something that I think Christine

  40. liked as well when you have six kids now

  41. sending them out onto 5 acres and the

  42. weather's starting to be nice. It's a

  43. wonderful thing. Um and Christine liked

  44. most the house, but I said, "Well, do

  45. you like it enough to actually go

  46. ahead?" I like it enough to go ahead,

  47. but it for me the land is more important

  48. than the actual house. And I know for

  49. you the house is more important than the

  50. actual land. and she said, "Well, it'd

  51. be nice to have um a master bedroom

  52. closet and the bathroom's really kind of

  53. small and outdated, so if we did a

  54. master bedroom renovation, I'd be Yeah,

  55. I think I'd really like the house." And

  56. I said, "Well, I'll promise you if it

  57. works out financially, I promise you

  58. we'll be able to I I will we'll work on

  59. a renovation and I'll try to do the vast

  60. majority of the work that I can, which

  61. I'm not very skilled at. Not I'm not a a

  62. competent handyman type of person, uh

  63. but I can work hard and I'm a grunt

  64. worker, so I can do that. So anyway, I

  65. just started in on that and already

  66. hitting some snags that are starting to

  67. feel beyond my competence. I don't mind

  68. doing hard, grueling work, and there's

  69. already been some of that. But I really

  70. do not enjoy trying to get things done

  71. that are beyond my competence. And I

  72. know some of you are the type of people

  73. that are not only competent, but you're

  74. also really competent to teach

  75. yourselves how to be competent in

  76. something that you're not in. And I'm

  77. that way in some subject, languages. I'm

  78. quite competent at learning languages

  79. and and overcoming problems of, you

  80. know, difficulty in grammar and there's

  81. lots in Hebrew and Greek. Uh, but I'm

  82. not very good at learning, retaining,

  83. and applying things when it comes to all

  84. things handyman. So, I don't really

  85. enjoy that aspect. Anyway, here's the

  86. first problem that happened. I uh uh did

  87. a lot of the demol demolition and

  88. started um uh stripping the floor. And

  89. one of my hopes was that we broke out

  90. into the garage cuz in the garage we're

  91. going to build the the space for a

  92. little bit larger bathroom and then the

  93. the walk-in closet. And uh I'd really

  94. hope that there I don't even know what

  95. you call it. That's another thing I'm

  96. not good at me remembering construction

  97. terms to even talk about what I'm trying

  98. to describe that the problem is. But

  99. it's like when you have like a little

  100. retaining wall from the the floor into

  101. the garage that's concrete. And I

  102. thought, well, if that's there, we'll

  103. probably have to concrete saw that.

  104. Well, it wasn't there. And I was like,

  105. "Sweet. I won't have to do any concrete

  106. sawing." Until I found out that the

  107. garage floor is at least 2 in higher

  108. than the bathroom floor. And the

  109. bathroom floor is uh level with our

  110. master bedroom hardwood floor. And so I

  111. already was like, "Oh no, I don't think

  112. we're going to be able to float that

  113. distance. Uh I don't I don't think we

  114. can just bring up the floor cuz then

  115. there will be a step out of the master

  116. bedroom into the master bathroom. So,

  117. there's going to have to be a bunch of

  118. concrete sawing, like a 20x 5- ft pad of

  119. concrete that has to be saw. If it has

  120. rebar in it, I don't even think a

  121. jackhammer will work. And so, that was

  122. the first thing that I was like, "Oh,

  123. man." Um, and then the second thing is

  124. after I got the tile off, which was

  125. harder than it should have been, like I

  126. jammed my wrist a couple times using one

  127. of those scrapers, you know, hits the

  128. tile wrong and rebounds on you. Finally

  129. got all the tile off and then you have

  130. the quick set. I think that's what it's

  131. called. And so I thought, okay, maybe

  132. I'll be able to scrape that quick set

  133. off. Hopefully they put it on plywood

  134. and not OSB. You guys know what OSB is?

  135. Um OSB is like little flake board, not

  136. particle board, but little flakes that

  137. they've glued and stamped together. And

  138. so I'm hammering into it. And first of

  139. all, I find this like green netting and

  140. it reminds me almost like of rebar in

  141. terms of its effect on the quick set.

  142. Nothing's breaking apart like it should

  143. cuz the netting is holding everything

  144. together. And then one time I'm like

  145. trying to just rip through. I'm just

  146. trying to get below the quick set to see

  147. if I can get some purchase and scrape it

  148. off. And all of a sudden, I pull and out

  149. comes this like cord or something. So,

  150. it was it's a heated floor and there's

  151. all this stuff in it, right? And and as

  152. I get down, I'm ripping out little

  153. pieces of wood and I'm like, "No, they

  154. put quick set on OSB." And I think you

  155. do that cuz it's cheaper, not cuz it's

  156. smart. But, uh cuz now like, "Oh, I'm

  157. going to have to cut the subfloor out."

  158. And sure enough, I talked to Ben who

  159. knows a lot about these kinds of

  160. construction things and is involved in

  161. his own renovation right now and so

  162. everything's fresh and talked to the

  163. contractor that I'm working with and

  164. he's like, "Yeah, I just got to cut the

  165. subfloor out." And when that happens,

  166. you might think, "Well, it's not that

  167. hard to cut the subfloor out." That's on

  168. the edge of my competence. I don't, you

  169. know, and then on top of it, I'm

  170. supposed to cut the subfloor out and

  171. then hire a plumber while the floor is

  172. open cuz it's open from the basement,

  173. too, to do the plumbing. Right. So now

  174. the floor is going to be without a

  175. subfloor.

  176. You call what do you what do you call

  177. Ben just told me what you call what the

  178. subfloor is uh fastened to joist

  179. rafters. I what joist

  180. >> joist floor joist. Yeah. Okay. So those

  181. floor joist and they're like 12 by twos

  182. at least. Um so that's all that would be

  183. on the floor, right? And I've got kids

  184. and it's open and and and then I'm like

  185. well I don't know how long the plumber

  186. come up. So, I'm bing at the next thing.

  187. And I was going dayto day, getting a

  188. little bit done each day. And now I'm

  189. like, I don't want to cut the floor out.

  190. Uh, I don't want to do that. And then I

  191. have to put it back. Um, I don't like

  192. measuring things. And that would mean I

  193. have to measure things. Um, on top of I

  194. was like, if I do it wrong, I'm going to

  195. cut into these joists. That's terrible

  196. thing to do. So, anyway, after 3 days, I

  197. was like, I got to get back in there and

  198. start working on it. And if I got to cut

  199. it out, I cut it out. And because I was

  200. at that place of like my competence

  201. limit and you might think, come on,

  202. that's not that. Well, don't

  203. underestimate how much you uh how

  204. competent you are. Not everyone has an

  205. easy time getting competent things that

  206. as some of you guys do and I'm just not

  207. that guy. But I also don't like becoming

  208. responsible for construction. So I try

  209. not to learn more. But that's a whole

  210. different philosophy. But anyway,

  211. I just prayed. And it's not like I

  212. hadn't been depending on the Lord for

  213. the whole thing. I said, "God, this is

  214. sort of out of my comfort zone to do all

  215. this work, but it's a way to save money.

  216. Please help me with this." But regarding

  217. this sticking point of I don't want to

  218. cut the floor out. So now for 3 days,

  219. I've been avoiding doing anything. It

  220. was the first time I thought, "God, can

  221. you just help me? Is there a way to do

  222. this without having to cut the subfloor

  223. out? Can you provide it?" And I walk

  224. into the bathroom and I'm wearing one of

  225. those CO masks. I don't have a

  226. respirator cuz it's all so dusty. And

  227. that's all I'm doing. And I walk in and

  228. I look and I thought, I haven't taken

  229. the shower pan out yet. I wonder if they

  230. just put the shower pack or a pan, like

  231. the fiberglass pan on Hardy board. Cuz

  232. if they put it on the Hardy board, maybe

  233. I can get under the Hardy board and get

  234. right under the OSB. Maybe they put the

  235. OSB on old plywood cuz I don't this

  236. house was built, I don't think, when

  237. they were using. So anyway, I was like,

  238. I had an idea. I prayed. Had an idea. I

  239. take the shower pan off and sure enough

  240. it's Hardy backer and I'm going to I'm

  241. going to be able to get the Hardy backer

  242. off. It's like these screws that they

  243. put it in. I'll put that off. And

  244. underneath the Hardy Backer is indeed

  245. plywood which has a flat surface and is

  246. easier to scrape under. Right. I'm

  247. telling you all of this. It's fun to

  248. keep you sort of apprised of things I'm

  249. doing in my life and uh I actually kind

  250. of am enjoying the step by pro step

  251. by-step process. But I'm telling you

  252. this specifically because even though in

  253. general I was asking the Lord to help

  254. me. I had waited for 3 days thinking

  255. this is beyond what I'm really all that

  256. comfortable doing. I don't want to go in

  257. there, cut it out, have no floor, have a

  258. problem, blah blah blah blah blah. And

  259. then so I went in because my lack of

  260. competence made me think about relying

  261. on God and praying for and I prayed and

  262. within a moment of walking in I had new

  263. thought, let's take the shower pan out.

  264. Maybe I can get underneath there. And I

  265. really think I'm going to be able to. So

  266. my point is this. Sometimes you're not

  267. even intending not to depend on the

  268. Lord, but you get to a point where

  269. you're out of your depth and then you're

  270. like, you're prompted to depend on him.

  271. And I bet I see you guys nodding. Have

  272. you ever prayed and within just seconds

  273. or minutes the solution you needed for

  274. the thing? Have you ever been searching

  275. for hours for something and then you're

  276. so fed up? I was like, "God has helped

  277. me find it." And within a second, he

  278. drops a thought about where it might be,

  279. and it's exactly there. That happens to

  280. me routinely. And what's the problem

  281. with that happening routinely? Why are

  282. you searching for hours without just

  283. asking him for it? Well, because

  284. searching for things doesn't really

  285. generally seem outside of your

  286. competence, does it? I'll ask you a

  287. question though. Should we have to be

  288. reminded

  289. of like a lack of compet competence in

  290. an area before we are prompted to depend

  291. on him? There are lots of reasons why we

  292. don't depend on him. The one I'm

  293. sharing, I'd call that like out of

  294. sight, out of mind. So the thought that

  295. you need him for this particular thing

  296. is out of sight, out of mind until it's

  297. not. So that's like out of sight, out of

  298. mind, non-dependence. Um, another type

  299. of non-dependence

  300. uh would would be more serious, I think.

  301. I'm not saying this one's good, but it's

  302. like you actually don't want to depend

  303. on the Lord because you know that

  304. depending on him requires you to

  305. surrender to his will to obey and you

  306. know a thing that you're not obeying.

  307. And you kind of know just from knowing

  308. who God is that if you're going to ask

  309. him for help, he's going to give you the

  310. same answer he did before, which is

  311. obey, right? Um, so let me ask you this,

  312. and you don't need to do a show of

  313. hands, but just consider yourself. How

  314. many of you pray before every single

  315. time you drive somewhere?

  316. Driving is routine. We drive our kids to

  317. school four times a week. And I do not

  318. pray every single time I get in the car

  319. to drive to school because it's routine.

  320. Because it doesn't seem like something I

  321. need help with. It's out of sight, out

  322. of mind, right? Would it be over

  323. spiritual like hypers spiritual to just

  324. actually pray every time you get in a

  325. car? I wouldn't say driving is unsafe,

  326. but it's there. There can be dangers,

  327. right? It's interesting. I will pray

  328. before every single family trip probably

  329. because that's what my dad modeled to

  330. me. And we were going on a long trip. My

  331. dad would always pray before he started

  332. the car and then we'd drive. But would

  333. it really be that hard to just pray

  334. before every time we get in the car and

  335. drive somewhere? I don't I don't really

  336. think it would. So, let's go to before

  337. we even get into Esther, let me show you

  338. something about what our dependence

  339. should actually look like. This is from

  340. John 15. Most of you have either read

  341. this multiple times or maybe even

  342. memorized this word. This is John 15:5.

    John 15:5

  343. And in many of your Bibles, it's red

  344. letter, which means Jesus himself was

  345. saying it.

  346. He says, "I am the vi vine. You are the

  347. branches. Whoever abides in me and I in

  348. him, he it is that bears much fruit.

  349. Apart from me, you can do nothing. Apart

  350. from me, you can do nothing."

  351. Right? It was not just that I

  352. couldn't really figure out how to deal

  353. with the subfloor. It was that I can't

  354. even swing a hammer to punch out drywall

  355. apart from Jesus. It's either apart from

  356. you can do nothing or apart from me you

  357. can do some things. But it says apart

  358. from me you can do nothing. However, I

  359. have the sneaking suspicion that the way

  360. we often live and that the way that I

  361. sometimes live is that apart from me,

  362. you can do some things,

  363. right? But apart from you, me you can do

  364. nothing. It says, and I've got some

  365. vines. I think Jesus is most likely

  366. talking about grape vines here. Uh, and

  367. I have grape vines now. They're growing

  368. on kind of a trellis, and they're

  369. overgrown and need to be cut down. And

  370. this is true of trees as well. And this

  371. is an obvious point, nothing new. If

  372. you're like, "Whoa, I think you might

  373. have skipped some subjects in school."

  374. But when you cut off a branch on a vine,

  375. it withers and dies. Right? So, what

  376. he's saying is that us as human beings,

  377. when we don't abide in his will, when

  378. we're not obeying, we're we're cut off

  379. uh not necessarily cut off from

  380. salvation. That's not the point here.

  381. But we're cut off from the help that we

  382. need for everything,

  383. right? So that means you need to depend

  384. on God for every single thing. And

  385. nobody's saying, "Hey, you need to pray

  386. for an hour every time you drive

  387. somewhere." No. In fact, it might just

  388. be like, "Lord, help me with this drive.

  389. Lord, help me with this drive." Let me

  390. give you an example of how David put

  391. this. Let's go to 1st Chronicles 16:11.

  392. 1 Chronicles 11 says this, "Seek the

  393. Lord and his strength." Strength, seek

  394. his presence continually.

  395. Maybe that's the way we ought to think

  396. about things like driving is inviting

  397. the Lord's presence along on the drive.

  398. His favor, his strength, his help, his

  399. presence.

  400. Why not take the Lord along with you?

  401. He's coming anyway. It's about your

  402. attitude and dependence. Uh so so I

  403. think sometimes when Jesus says things

  404. that are so obvious

  405. um we sort of take them for granted and

  406. we don't apply them to the level they

  407. need to be applied. Uh there's nothing

  408. some of you are this just came to mind

  409. some of I know we have a lot of computer

  410. programmers and I'm somewhat surprised

  411. when I see how fast their word their

  412. count is how fast they can type right I

  413. can't type that fast. Um that's a that's

  414. a strong competence and you do that

  415. every single day. Do you know you can't

  416. type without Jesus? Why? Why is it?

  417. Well, because he sustains everything in

  418. the universe by the power of his word.

  419. He sustains your fingers. He sustains

  420. your breath. He sustains your eyes. He

  421. sustains everything that you would

  422. possibly need to be able to type. And

  423. yet, here's the interesting thing. Does

  424. your word count go down just because you

  425. have an unsurrendered attitude? Maybe

  426. you wake up salty and you're acting up.

  427. You're speaking to your kids and your

  428. wife in a way that you shouldn't and or

  429. vice versa. and you all of a sudden like

  430. lose your ability to type. That's not

  431. the way that it actually works. Um,

  432. what's true is that God is benevolent

  433. and is patient with our disobedience and

  434. doesn't just turn off the rules of the

  435. universe every time we sin. He continues

  436. to sustain you.

  437. But if you didn't, you would just poof

  438. out of existence. So, it's still true

  439. that you actually need to depend on the

  440. Lord for everyone a for everything. It's

  441. true that you are actually dependent on

  442. him for everything, but it's the

  443. attitude that we're getting after. Okay?

  444. So, I want you to think about that. The

  445. last thing I'll say about my experience

  446. on depending on him is that when I got

  447. the help I needed, the problem was

  448. solved so quickly. And this is a minor

  449. thing. It's not that big of a deal. I

  450. could just pay someone to fix the

  451. There's parts of it that I'm going to

  452. ask someone to do. I could just pay

  453. someone. We do have the money to pay

  454. someone to fix the floor. Uh, so there

  455. were all kinds of solutions. Wasn't some

  456. huge conflict. Um, but Esther is walking

  457. into what could be an absolutely huge

  458. conflict. And I listed two different

  459. types of non-dependence. One, like just

  460. straight up prideful disobedience where

  461. you're like, I don't want to depend. I

  462. can do it myself. Another one is the out

  463. of sight, out of mind kind of

  464. non-dependence. It's like you didn't

  465. think you really needed that. It's it's

  466. just way the idea of dependence is the

  467. back of your mind, but not front of

  468. mind. Another one is this. You are so

  469. afraid of a negative outcome that the

  470. reason why you can't get to the point of

  471. really depending on the Lord is that

  472. you're too afraid to let control of the

  473. situation. I know that is such a human

  474. thing to experience. Fear is a a

  475. powerful hurdle to overcome uh when we

  476. want to depend on the Lord because when

  477. you're really afraid of a negative

  478. outcome uh you everything inside of you

  479. except for your new nature and the Holy

  480. Spirit your flesh will want to depend on

  481. yourself. And there's a reason for that.

  482. Um you cannot see God. You cannot

  483. control his help. you cannot determine

  484. his choice for the outcome of whatever

  485. situation you're facing.

  486. I couldn't determine I you know I

  487. actually prayed that there wouldn't be

  488. OSB. I thought I saw OSB. I prayed that

  489. the quick set would be right on top of

  490. the uh uh uh the plywood. It happens to

  491. be right on top of the

  492. Hardy Backer, but that's not more of a

  493. problem. I can just take the Hardy

  494. backer out and then the subfloor is

  495. right there. Um, but I at the time kind

  496. of thought that it was silly to pray for

  497. OSB not being there when I looked and

  498. thought that looks like OSB, you know,

  499. but turns out it wasn't, you know, so it

  500. was just but again, nothing changed. It

  501. already was what it was. God wasn't

  502. transmorphing the material. It was just

  503. an attitude change in me that started

  504. being dependent and then I experienced

  505. God's help and that made me want to

  506. praise him. It was a powerful moment.

  507. And if he cares for us and helps us in

  508. those small ways, is he not going to

  509. help you in areas where you're afraid of

  510. the outcome? And I want to presuppose,

  511. although this is not always the case,

  512. that your fear is three things. One,

  513. it's rational.

  514. It isn't always. I'm saying in this

  515. situation, you're facing a fear that's

  516. rational. Esther was uh she's also

  517. facing a fear that's justified. So

  518. sometimes your fears are rational,

  519. sometimes they're not. But let's think

  520. about ones that are actually rational,

  521. right? It's not crazy for you to think

  522. the outcome of a situation might be

  523. really bad for you or for someone you

  524. love. Um, secondly, it's justified.

  525. Meaning that the fear is not only

  526. rational, but it's a justified fear. An

  527. example of that would be if someone you

  528. love gets sick with a disease that could

  529. be terminal. It's rational for you to be

  530. afraid of their loss. It's also

  531. justified because the disease is really

  532. dangerous. And then it's it's warranted,

  533. right? You put those all together. I

  534. think you understand what I'm saying.

  535. When I say that your fear sometimes is

  536. rational, justified, and warranted,

  537. meaning that the right answer to that is

  538. not just get over it or your fear is

  539. fake and phantom or your fear is totally

  540. unjustified and wrong. That can be true

  541. as well. Um, but Esther's fear is

  542. rational. It's justified and it's

  543. warranted. What is her fear? Well, her

  544. fear is rational because the law says

  545. you can't come into King Xerxes or

  546. Asaware.

  547. It's against the law to do so or you

  548. will be executed with one tiny little

  549. exemption if he decides not so and

  550. extends his scepter to you. She mentions

  551. it rationally to Mori. Everyone knows

  552. this is what happens, right? So, it's

  553. it's rational. It's justified and it's

  554. warranted. Her fear is legitimate.

  555. There's no no human being that wouldn't

  556. be concerned about that. It's not wrong

  557. to be concerned about putting your life

  558. in harm's way. So Esther in order to be

  559. able to do what's right in dependence on

  560. the Lord has to overcome fear. You might

  561. be overcoming just sort of being in

  562. ignorance of your need for dependence

  563. and it's outside of outside of your

  564. mind. So it's outside of mind kind of

  565. thing. Or or you might actually be in a

  566. place where you're like, I know what I'm

  567. going to have to give up. If I'm

  568. actually going to faithfully ask the

  569. Lord uh to help me, so if I'm going to

  570. depend on him, I'm going to have to give

  571. up this. I don't want to give up this,

  572. so I'm not going to depend on him.

  573. That's the kind of obstinence obstinate

  574. non-dependence.

  575. Or you might be so afraid you're having

  576. a really hard time relinquishing your

  577. own control and giving it to the Lord.

  578. And that's not even exhaustive of the

  579. reasons why we why we don't depend. In

  580. this case, Esther offers us another

  581. master class of how to overcome

  582. fear-based non-dependence.

  583. And so, that one might be the most

  584. applicable one to you. But whatever it

  585. is, Esther is going to show us and God

  586. uses Esther through his word to show us

  587. exactly how he wants us to depend on

  588. him. And that when we do so, we can find

  589. his help for his righteous outcome. If

  590. you learn nothing else today, if you'd

  591. like a summary of the sermon, here's the

  592. main point. When we depend on God for a

  593. wise plan in a time of conflict, we can

  594. serve his righteous outcome.

  595. When we depend on God for a wise plan in

  596. a time of conflict, we can serve his

  597. righteous outcome. This is always true.

  598. You can be certain about this. It will

  599. not always be the outcome you hoped for.

  600. It will not always be the outcome you

  601. could predict or expect. But when we

  602. depend on God for a wise plan in a time

  603. of conflict, we can always serve his

  604. righteous outcome. And we'll see that

  605. here in the life of Esther. To set this

  606. up again, I kind of I kind of told you

  607. about how uh what she was afraid of and

  608. what she had overcome. I would like to

  609. read um verse 15 through 17 just to

  610. refresh us before we go into chapter 5

  611. verse one. Thank you very much. Um and

  612. so starting in Esther

  613. uh 4:15

  614. um then Esther told them to reply Morai

  615. and Mori just told her don't think

  616. you're going to get out of this and and

  617. even if you don't do what's right here

  618. I'm paraphrasing like God can find

  619. someone else to use here deliverance

  620. will arise from another place and when

  621. Esther heard this that's all she had to

  622. hear Esther told them to reply to Mori

  623. go gather all the Jews to be found in

  624. Susa and hold a fast on my behalf and do

  625. not eat or drink for 3 days, night or

  626. day. I and my young women will also fast

  627. as you do. Then I will go to the king,

  628. though it is against the law, and if I

  629. perish, I perish." Morai then went away

  630. and did everything as Esther had ordered

  631. him.

  632. So she does surrender the fear. She

  633. overcomes the fear which is necessary in

  634. depending on the Lord. Otherwise, if you

  635. just leave fear unsurrendered, it will

  636. force you to control things yourself.

  637. anything you care about, anytime you're

  638. trying to avoid an outcome, if you're

  639. afraid and don't relinquish that a fear,

  640. you will try to control the outcome. And

  641. by the way, you probably already were

  642. thinking this, but you trying to control

  643. the outcome is exactly the opposite of

  644. depending on the Lord. And so, you can't

  645. expect that you're going to receive the

  646. help that you need when you're depending

  647. on yourself rather than him. And so we

  648. see the first thing is that she

  649. relinquishes her fear. A fear that was

  650. justified, warranted, and rational. A

  651. reasonable fear, a fear that anyone

  652. would have, not a fear that I would ever

  653. want to correct. People come to me all

  654. the time with fears I think are

  655. legitimate, and still the answer is to

  656. relinquish them and give God control

  657. over the outcome. Right? So she

  658. definitely does that. In this case, I

  659. think it's it's

  660. arguably the worst fear you could be

  661. faced with. the genuine legitimate fear

  662. of your life being lost, of you dying.

  663. You know,

  664. I don't know if you've ever faced that

  665. kind of fear. Maybe you have in like a

  666. traffic accident or a disease or

  667. something like that, but that that

  668. really is a kind of fear that exposes

  669. all the others. So, she relinquishes

  670. that.

  671. I kind of think one of the reasons why

  672. God gives us these stories that are just

  673. like the maximal surreners, the maximal

  674. relinquishments, the maximal faithless

  675. faithfulness um is that that shows that

  676. look, everything under that is still

  677. something you should relinquish. If

  678. God's going to have you to serve his

  679. will, relinquish even your very life. If

  680. he requires that of some faithful

  681. servants, um, then anything less

  682. valuable than that is also reasonable

  683. for him to have you relinquish. And I

  684. wanted you to notice the second thing. I

  685. mentioned it last week as well. Um, you

  686. will not find a place where Esther

  687. before this ever commands or orders

  688. Morai to do anything. She's all she will

  689. command some of her Unix but she's being

  690. commanded and ordered by Morai always

  691. protectively always wisely and she

  692. always submits but in this situation as

  693. soon as she says if I perish I perish

  694. well as soon as she is relinquished that

  695. she gains this noble confidence where it

  696. says Morortei went out and did

  697. everything as Esther had ordered him and

  698. remember what she's ordering him to do

  699. not any little thing don't eat and don't

  700. drink for 3 days and also gather all the

  701. Jews for them to do the same thing. All

  702. right? So, she's relinquished her fear

  703. and she's sowing in incredible

  704. dependence on the Lord and she's leading

  705. other people to dependence on the Lord

  706. on her behalf. She's leading her own

  707. servant ladies. She's leading her uncle.

  708. She's leading all the Jews in Susa to

  709. depend on the Lord. I showed you last

  710. week about how fasting really is about

  711. dependence on the Lord. I'm not going to

  712. go over those verses again, but that's

  713. really what fasting is about. We'll go

  714. to Isaiah 51 today to talk about that a

  715. little bit. So you can see where I'm

  716. getting the idea of dependence on the

  717. Lord from. In this case, she had to

  718. overcome fear based non-dependence and

  719. she needed to relinquish that. And when

  720. she did, she gained the confidence she

  721. needed and then she depended on the

  722. Lord. And she's still depending on the

  723. Lord in verse one of chapter 5. And

  724. verse one of chapter 5 says this, on the

  725. third day, Esther put on her royal robes

  726. and stood in the inner court of the

  727. king's palace. Uh that's where that

  728. standing there is taking your life into

  729. your own hands. If he decides he didn't

  730. want you to come there, he doesn't like

  731. that you came without being asked, off

  732. to execution.

  733. I think I'll say this now. I was going

  734. to talk about it at another sermon, but

  735. remember when it talks about being

  736. hanged on the gallows, the image that

  737. comes to the American mind of being hung

  738. on the gallows is a gallows with a

  739. noose. That's not the method of Persian

  740. um uh execution. It's impalement. It's

  741. hung it's being hung on a sharp stick.

  742. Okay, you can look this up in historical

  743. narratives, but actually you can

  744. actually even just look it up in the

  745. Bible. Some of your Bibles, the

  746. translations will say impaled rather

  747. than hung on the gallows, right? So,

  748. it's not just fear of execution. It's

  749. fear of a torturous type of execution.

  750. That's what she would have been facing.

  751. So, she most certainly relinquished her

  752. life. But it's the third day. She's

  753. still fasting. Uh sometimes people will

  754. call the type of fast that Esther was

  755. doing a black fast because there's no

  756. water and no food for three days. You

  757. can look this up. Personally, my

  758. intuition is that you probably could go

  759. longer than 3 days without water before

  760. dying. But in general, the consensus is

  761. it's very dangerous to do so. So your

  762. body is at its limit of needing

  763. sustenance when you have fasted from

  764. water for 3 days. You can fast from food

  765. much longer than that. I don't know if

  766. you ever done a three-day fast. It's

  767. painful to do that to truly not eat.

  768. I've never done a black fast uh for

  769. three days, but I've fasted for extended

  770. periods of time. And

  771. it it really requires you to depend on

  772. the Lord. One of the reasons if if

  773. dependence on the Lord was out out of

  774. sight, out of mind, fasting will quickly

  775. put it in your sight and in your mind,

  776. right? Because you need food and you

  777. definitely need water. And every time

  778. you're experiencing thirst or hunger

  779. pangs, when you're fasting to the Lord,

  780. I'm not talking about intermittent diet

  781. fasting. That's a different thing. When

  782. you're fasting to seek the Lord's will,

  783. when you're fasting to humble yourself,

  784. when you're fasting to gain help, grace,

  785. and help in a time of need, when you're

  786. fasting in dependence on him, then every

  787. time you look at food that you cannot

  788. eat, it reminds you of just how much you

  789. need him. It reminds you of verses like

  790. where Jesus said, "Man does not live on

  791. bread alone, but on every word that

  792. comes from the mouth of God." So, we

  793. depend actually more and at like a found

  794. foundational level on God's word than we

  795. do on food. Even though you definitely

  796. still need food and water. And so, she's

  797. still the third day. It doesn't say

  798. she's broken her fast. is the third day

  799. of her black fast and she is most

  800. certainly depending on the Lord and she

  801. has relinquished her fear.

  802. So that's it. I mean, you look at that

  803. and if we're following her example, it's

  804. like, okay, first you got to relinquish

  805. whatever makes you afraid or whatever is

  806. causing you to keep custody of the

  807. control over the situation.

  808. The more you care about the outcome, the

  809. more tempted you will be to take control

  810. into your own hands. Taking control in

  811. your own hands is

  812. opposite of giving God that control. And

  813. he knows he knows if you're holding on

  814. to the control versus if you've

  815. relinquished it. Okay? So what Esther

  816. does is she makes a plan to depend on

  817. the Lord and she leads other people into

  818. it on her behalf. Uh so you could say

  819. she's she's not only depending on God,

  820. she's also depending some on his

  821. faithful servants who are then depending

  822. on God for her, praying for her. Okay?

  823. There all kinds of applications. Think

  824. of a conflict that you wish was

  825. resolved. Are you depending on God for

  826. the resolution of that conflict? Maybe

  827. the conflict's not that big of a deal.

  828. Kind of like trying to remove a

  829. subfloor. Uh or there's a a conflict

  830. where maybe you're facing a situation

  831. where you don't have enough money to pay

  832. for the bills and you know that it's

  833. quite simple the solution cuz it's just

  834. math. You have to spend less and you're

  835. confident enough to figure out where to

  836. spend less. And so you decide to go into

  837. budgeting and you're not even thinking

  838. about God helping you with budgeting,

  839. right? Except that our stewardship over

  840. our finances is most certainly something

  841. that should be dependent on him. And so

  842. that's out of sight, out of mind.

  843. However, I think not having enough money

  844. makes people afraid. So maybe you're

  845. really afraid of not having enough money

  846. and now that's the kind of fear-based

  847. non-dependence. Or maybe you're just

  848. like, you know what, I can I can do my

  849. own finances. I don't need God's help

  850. and I don't want to stop spending the

  851. way I want to anyway. I don't want to be

  852. told how I have to steward this money. I

  853. should be able to buy things with my

  854. hard-earned money the way I want. And

  855. now it's pride-based non-dependence

  856. because you're not really willing to do

  857. it the way he wants you to. And you

  858. know, you can have a time of fasting

  859. where you're not depending on the Lord

  860. at all. That's why I want to take you to

  861. Isaiah 58. It's not the fast that God

  862. has chosen. Let's go to Isaiah 58

  863. because his people tried to do the same

  864. thing. And by the way, from the outside

  865. looking in, you can't tell. It's only

  866. from the inside that that God se Well,

  867. God from the outside sees our our inside

  868. motivation or whether this is a fast

  869. that he will accept or not. So listen to

  870. Isaiah 58. This is God speaking. Cry

  871. loud. Do not hold back. Lift up your

  872. voice like a trumpet. Declare to my

  873. people their transgression, to the house

  874. of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me

  875. daily and delight to know my ways as if

  876. they were a nation that did

  877. righteousness and did not forsake the

  878. judgment of their God. They ask for me

  879. right ask of me righteous judgments.

  880. They delight to draw near to God. Why

  881. have we fasted and you see it not? Why

  882. have we humbled ourselves and you take

  883. no knowledge of it? Behold, in the day

  884. of your fast you seek your own pleasure

  885. and oppress all your workers. Behold,

  886. you fast only to quarrel and to fight

  887. and to hit with wicked fist. Fasting

  888. like yours this day will not make your

  889. voice be heard on high. So there is a

  890. way to fast that from the outside looks

  891. righteous. That is actually an

  892. unrighteous way to fast. Okay, we're

  893. coming back to Isaiah 58. So you could

  894. just put a marker there or hold your

  895. finger there. I want to go to James

  896. 15-9. It is a New Testament way of

  897. saying the exact same thing. James 1

    James 1:5–8

  898. verse 5-8 says this. If any of you lacks

  899. wisdom, let him ask God who gives

  900. generously to all without reproach and

  901. it will be given to him. But let him ask

  902. in faith with no doubting. For the one

  903. who doubts is like a wave of the sea

  904. that is driven and tossed by the wind.

  905. For that person must not suppose that he

  906. will receive anything from the Lord.

  907. Um, to give you an human example of

  908. this, I don't know if you've ever

  909. experienced this. Maybe you're the kind

  910. of person that people come to for

  911. advice. I I think a lot of people at

  912. Boon are the type of people that come,

  913. you guys got biblical wisdom and you

  914. listen to the Holy Spirit and so you

  915. give good counsel. So, someone comes to

  916. you for advice and you tell them the

  917. advice. Um, however, the advice does

  918. require surrender and you're not sure

  919. whether they're going to listen to the

  920. advice. And then uh you find out that

  921. they're going to other people for advice

  922. too and then they find the advice that

  923. takes the least amount of surrender and

  924. do that thing. That would be an example.

  925. And and and then you feel like it's

  926. like, well, why did you even ask me for

  927. advice if you're just going to totally

  928. disregard what I said and find whoever

  929. tells you the thing that costs you

  930. nothing to apply, right? And and so then

  931. you start thinking, well, this person

  932. isn't really seeking wisdom. They're

  933. seeking for someone to double stamp what

  934. they already want to do. And if that's

  935. I'll just use the word annoying as a

  936. counselor. Imagine what it's like to God

  937. who knows in advance what spirit you're

  938. asking in. And he's saying here he's

  939. actually saying that if you ask with a

  940. double-minded attitude, you ought not to

  941. expect to get the help you need. He's

  942. still benevolent. He doesn't just turn

  943. off all common grace just because you're

  944. double-minded for a season. But when

  945. you're acting in a double-minded way,

  946. you ought not to expect to gain the

  947. wisdom you need to help you in your time

  948. of need. And it's very similar to when

  949. you're fasting just in an outward way

  950. rather than in a deep way. It says,

  951. "Fasting like yours, verse 4 of 58 of

  952. Isaiah, this day will not make your

  953. voice be heard on high." Conversely, it

  954. stands to reason, and I know this is

  955. true, that a righteous fast will make

  956. your voice be heard on high.

  957. So you can fast in such a way that

  958. benefits your prayer life. None doesn't

  959. help you to understand how dependent you

  960. are or depend on him more. Verse 5 of

  961. chapter 58 is such the fast that I

  962. choose a day for a person to humble

  963. himself. Is it not to bow down his head

  964. like a reed and to spread sackcloth and

  965. ashes under him? Will you call this a

  966. fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is

  967. not this the fast that I choose to loose

  968. the bonds of wickedness, to undo the

  969. straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed

  970. go free, to break every yoke? Is it not

  971. to share your bread with the hungry? And

  972. bring the homeless poor into your house

  973. when you see the naked to cover him, and

  974. not to hide yourself from your own

  975. flesh. Then shall your light break forth

  976. like the dawn, and your healing shall

  977. spring up speedily. Your righteousness

  978. shall go before you, and the glory of

  979. the Lord shall be your rear guard.

  980. Now, as students of the Bible, who I

  981. think have a very good and developed

  982. interpretive sense, and even if you're

  983. brand new to this, what's your sense

  984. from this chapter in Esther of what kind

  985. of fast she was having? One that was

  986. acceptable to the Lord, one that brings

  987. him in as her rear guard, one where he

  988. sees all the way through that she's

  989. depending on him, or one like Isaiah 58

  990. that's just for show.

  991. I think it's quite obvious that she was

  992. depending on him in a way that pleased

  993. him. And what's the result? Let's look.

  994. On the third day, still fasting, Esther

  995. put on her royal robes, stood in the

  996. inner court on the of the king's palace

  997. in front of the king's quarters while

  998. the king was sitting on his royal throne

  999. inside the room opposite the entrance to

1000. the palace. Now, I don't want to read

1001. too much between the lines. I do not

1002. know exactly what was going on in

1003. Esther's heart. We do get a look into

1004. her emotional life in verse four of

  1005. chapter 4 and Esther's and when Esther's

1006. young women and her Unix came and told

1007. her the queen was deeply distressed. She

1008. was distressed because Mordei was

1009. lamenting in sackcloth and ashes. She

1010. was distressed at what was going on with

1011. Morai. So, we know she she's a human

1012. being. She experiences emotion. She may

1013. have been shaking. She may have been

1014. terrified. She may have been like noble,

1015. stoic, galvanized. If I die, I die. We

1016. don't know exactly what's going on. But

1017. it's perfectly fine for you to put

1018. yourself in her shoes in your own story.

1019. Do you know what I mean by that? Maybe

1020. you're standing at the precipice of

1021. wanting to relinquish control to God

1022. about an outcome that you're afraid of

  1023. not controlling.

1024. Oh man, this happens all the time in

1025. young parents relationships with their

1026. children. You want to control the

1027. outcome for them because you love them

1028. and you don't want them to have a

1029. negative outcome. And sometimes we don't

1030. even think about, wait a minute, am I is

1031. my control in my children's lives

1032. actually dependent on the Lord? Am I

  1033. depending on the Lord

1034. for change in their lives?

1035. I'll give you another example where I

1036. became fed up with not depending on the

1037. Lord for change in my children's lives.

1038. And this is so universal to children. If

1039. you're not yet a young parent, if you

1040. hadn't yet young kids, if you do, you're

1041. going to experience for yourself that is

1042. true. Children generally think the world

1043. revolves around them. That's their

1044. factory default settings. Okay? And you

1045. really do have to disabuse them of that

1046. notion. And if you don't, you're raising

  1047. a little entitled monster. That's just

1048. the way that goes. Please don't be

  1049. offended. It's just a fact. Uh so here's

1050. here's the reality though. They come

1051. with those factory settings. They're not

1052. born into this world entirely innocent.

1053. They're born with a sin nature. And so

1054. they think about what is good for me.

1055. And they and other than in really

1056. special cases where they learn to

1057. surrender to the Lord and their little

1058. hearts to the Lord really early on when

1059. something good happens to a brother or

1060. sister, their first thought is, "Oh,

1061. that's so amazing for them." Their first

1062. thought is, "I wish that was happening

1063. to me." And sometimes it's even like, "I

1064. don't even want it to be happening to

1065. them. I want it just to happen to me."

1066. You see this when uh a kid will get a

1067. toy and then the other kid wants the toy

1068. and the parents decide, you know what,

  1069. I'll buy two toys.

1070. We have enough video game consoles

1071. for every single kid cuz I'm planning

1072. for the future. We have one for the next

1073. kid. I'm just kidding. Um

1074. she's saying no and I'm accepting it.

  1075. Um,

1076. so does that do you think that that

1077. means they never fight over who gets to

1078. use what video game console?

1079. I had one Game Boy and for at least a

1080. year I had one game and it was Tetris

1081. and I played the heck out of that game.

1082. Uh, my children have access to at least

1083. 200 video games and every single one of

1084. them could have their own console to be

1085. playing on. I'm talking about consoles

1086. with screens. They don't need to play on

1087. one TV and yet they'll still fight about

1088. that. Um, and then they'll sometimes get

1089. mean towards each other. And I'm only

1090. telling you one of the negative sides of

  1091. my children's behaviors. There's lots to

1092. praise them for, too. But I thought

1093. about, you know, what's really going to

1094. be powerful enough to change the factory

1095. settings on a child's heart to the point

1096. where they're excited about when

1097. something good happens to another

1098. person. To the point where they're

1099. looking out not for their own interests

1100. only, but also for the interest of

1101. others. uh to the point where they repay

1102. evil with good. To the point where

1103. instead of saying something mean back to

1104. a sibling that said something mean, they

1105. say something kind back. Everyone can

1106. say mean things to people who say mean

1107. things, but it takes the Holy Spirit to

1108. say something kind to someone who said

1109. something mean. And that's the standard

1110. for children and adults. And so I

1111. thought, you know, there's nothing more

  1112. powerful than God's word. Here's what

  1113. we'll do. We'll have them memorize

1114. verses. I like to put my my the verses

1115. that I have them memorized to little

1116. songs. It doesn't matter. It could be

1117. already like I'll just take a song from

1118. somewhere and then fit it to the verses

1119. and then sing it. And I've done that for

1120. like 15 verses in the past. Kind of fell

1121. out of the rhythm of doing that. I

1122. thought, no, I'll choose verses that are

1123. targeted exactly at this problem. Be

1124. kind to one another, tender-hearted,

1125. forgiving one another as God in Christ

1126. forgave you. No, I'm not singing it in

1127. front of you guys. But it really works.

1128. They remember almost all 15 verses word

1129. for word because they remember the

1130. songs. And we're doing that again. And

1131. on top of it, I'm saying, why don't you

1132. guys write songs about verses that help

1133. you with issues that you're trying to

1134. overcome? Why' I do this? Cuz it's an

1135. active plan to depend on the Lord and

1136. his power for change in my children's

1137. lives. And by the way, it's not just

1138. them. I like to think that whatever is

1139. wrong with my family is what's wrong

1140. with my leadership because that's what a

1141. mentor taught me. So, I thought to

1142. myself, "Yeah, I probably uh don't put

1143. other people as uh more important than

1144. me often enough. Uh I'm often too

1145. selfish and not servant-hearted enough.

1146. And I wouldn't be surprised that some of

1147. this negative behavior has been directly

1148. modeled to them by me. So, I will also

1149. memorize those verses and look to apply

1150. them in my life." So, that's a plan that

1151. I came up with or that the Lord helped

1152. me to come up with to depend on him and

1153. the power of his word for a parenting

1154. change. Or we can just limp along

1155. screaming at our kids to change. Uh

1156. getting annoyed at them all the time for

1157. how, you know, their factory settings

1158. are not good. And no change ever

  1159. happens,

1160. you know, but it does require depending.

1161. And and by the way, which one which type

1162. of attitude you think the Lord is more

1163. likely to listen to that will actually

1164. reach his ears and he'll respond in a

1165. way that gives you the help you need?

1166. The kind of attitude where I quote a

1167. verse to my kids that I'm not currently

  1168. applying. I have a non-tender-hearted,

  1169. mean-spirited attitude while quoting

1170. that verse to them. Is God going to help

1171. them change as a result? Maybe because

1172. he's not going to block my children's

  1173. sanctification just because I'm being a

1174. hypocrite. But the way that I think

1175. about it is that if I want the support I

1176. need as a husband and father, then I

1177. need to be obeying too, right? It's that

1178. way with every type of dependence, and

  1179. there's a reason I'm spending this much

1180. time on dependence. Because if you get

1181. that right, the rest of it will flow. If

1182. you get that wrong, the rest of it will

1183. not. You cannot expect God to help you

1184. with whatever conflict or problem or

1185. thing that's ahead of you that you're

1186. trying to control. You can't expect him

1187. to help you with that if you're not

1188. obeying yourself. You even need him. We

1189. depend on him for obedience. It's the

1190. Holy Spirit that empowers us to obey.

1191. So like everything really apart from you

1192. can do nothing means exactly that. It's

  1193. not a hyperbole.

1194. So let's continue to see what happens

1195. because Esther indeed gets God's

1196. support. Again, his support is applied.

1197. God has not written himself into the

1198. story explicitly in Esther, which I find

1199. very interesting, especially because it

1200. gives us the opportunity to think about

1201. that out of sight, out of mind kind of

1202. thing. In a way, God seems kind of

1203. outside of out outside of mind, out

1204. outside of sight, outside of mind in

1205. Esther, right? He doesn't bring himself

1206. up. He doesn't write his name into the

1207. story. It doesn't even say that they

1208. fasted and prayed to God. That is what a

1209. fast is for in Jewish minds, but it's so

1210. interesting. It seems like he goes to

1211. lengths in many other places. It would

1212. just be so natural to say uh that they

1213. fasted and prayed to the Lord for help.

1214. So, it's obviously uh intentional on

1215. God's part to not have written himself

1216. into the story explicitly. And life

1217. feels that way all the time, doesn't it?

1218. Like, where's God? He doesn't seem to be

  1219. explicitly here. I can't sense his

1220. presence. What is he trying to do with

1221. the situation? Or he's just out of

1222. sight, out of mind because you haven't

1223. been thinking about him and you didn't

1224. think you needed him for the thing that

1225. you're facing. But you do cuz again, you

1226. can't do anything apart from him. That

1227. means you need him for everything.

1228. So Esther really surrendered her fear.

1229. She really was depending on him and she

1230. was even influencing others to depend on

  1231. him for her sake.

1232. and she's there on. We don't know

1233. exactly how she was feeling, but most

1234. human beings would be afraid. And just

  1235. because you're afraid doesn't mean that

1236. you're not being faithful. The point at

1237. which you allowing your fear to

1238. interrupt your faithfulness is when you

1239. don't take action in obedience. She took

1240. action, but she may still have been

1241. experiencing fear. And when the king saw

1242. Queen Esther standing in the court, she

1243. won favor in his sight. And he held out

1244. to Esther the golden scepter that was in

1245. his that was in his hand. As Esther

1246. approached and touched the tip of the

1247. scepter. And the king said to her, "What

1248. is it, Queen Esther? What is your

1249. request? It shall be given you even to

1250. the half of my kingdom."

1251. What I'm not going to say is that all of

1252. her fear just because there was this

  1253. answer was now

  1254. unjustified, irrational, and

1255. unwarranted. Why? because she could not

1256. predict that was going to be his

  1257. response.

  1258. At the same time,

1259. and I'll separate this from Esther cuz I

1260. think this is just an example of how

1261. she's a heroin of faith. But in our

1262. lives, how many times has God been

1263. faithful to you in a conflict you

1264. thought might was irresolvable or lead

1265. to a terrible outcome? How many times

1266. has he been faithful to you even when

1267. you had to experience a terrible

  1268. outcome?

1269. Can you really honestly say in your

1270. heart before him that he's ever been

  1271. unfaithful to you?

1272. Can you really ever say that? I cannot

  1273. say that. I have no I can't I can say

1274. that I thought that at times, but I was

1275. always wrong. And I knew I was wrong

1276. while I was thinking it and I thought it

  1277. anyway.

1278. That's what our flesh is like. So you

1279. ask yourself like with stories of

1280. Exodus, how many acts of miraculous

1281. power would God have to do before it

1282. becomes unreasonable for the Israelites

  1283. not to trust him?

1284. It does seem a little strange that right

1285. after walking through the Red Sea, which

1286. doesn't close up on them, but then

1287. closes up on the world's power, uh,

  1288. Egypt,

1289. and they all drowned. So they didn't

1290. they didn't fight at all. God just

1291. fought for them to three days later be

  1292. grumbling about food.

1293. Here Esther is fasting, not eating for

1294. three days. They were grumb. It's pretty

1295. stark difference, right? It seems

1296. strange. Although then you think about

1297. how many times has God blessed me and

1298. how many times have I complained the

1299. next day? We're not different than the

  1300. Israelites. I don't think I'm different.

1301. So, how must God look at that like look

1302. at the acts of power that I showed you.

1303. None of you were harmed. I even

1304. differentiated between Israel and and

1305. Egypt. I put you in Gan. You didn't even

1306. have darkness. You didn't get the

1307. plagues. You didn't have the death of

1308. the firstborn because you were protected

1309. by the blood on the doorpost. So So now

1310. you think I'm going to let you die in

1311. the desert. It's ridiculous. Yet we

1312. share in the ridiculousness. It is the

1313. human nature that no matter how many

1314. times God saves us and deliver us from

1315. things to still think he won't first.

  1316. And here's the reality.

1317. Sometimes he doesn't deliver you from

  1318. things.

1319. We know that loved ones will die.

1320. I don't know what the cause was and I

1321. haven't been able to check on the

1322. family, but a a friend that was close

1323. with me in college. I just found out on

1324. Facebook uh that she had uh passed away.

1325. Same birthday was one of the reasons why

1326. we kind of kept connecting. And um she

1327. had my wife and I out to uh to the coast

1328. to go clam digging. And so so I've had

  1329. some experiences. I I don't even know

1330. how she passed away, but it happens and

  1331. it's sad. I don't know what the

1332. circumstances were. So God does not

1333. always save people from death. That's a

  1334. fact.

1335. Does not always. So again, it's you

1336. don't overcome your fear by predicting

1337. the future outcome because you do not

1338. have control over predicting the future

1339. outcome. Also, if you were to look at

1340. your life in terms of patterns, are you

1341. more likely to predict a negative future

1342. outcome or a positive one? I'm way more

1343. likely to predict a negative outcome.

1344. Okay. So then and maybe Esther was too.

1345. I don't know. But in this case, most

1346. people would be thinking, "Yeah, I'm

1347. going to die unless for some special

1348. reason he hands out a scepter." And

  1349. instead, she's hearing that I'll give

1350. you whatever you want up to half my

1351. kingdom. Half her kingdom is like most

1352. of the world. Half his kingdom is like

1353. most of the world known world.

1354. Not sure anyone in in Persia had ever

1355. been offered that up until that time.

1356. And so you even I want to say this like

1357. on a razor's edge. Even though your fear

1358. can be uh rational, justified, and

  1359. warranted.

1360. Is it really though compared to how many

  1361. times you've experienced God's

  1362. deliverance?

1363. Like especially if you've like really

1364. been sinking into that fear. Is that

1365. Yes. I will not say that it wasn't. We

  1366. shouldn't say that it okay, it's

1367. rational. Yeah, it is. It's justified.

  1368. It's warranted. But

1369. the way that I look at it is that God's

1370. faithfulness just simply should override

1371. that in your life. If I die, I die. He's

1372. that faithful. How many times does he

1373. have to move heaven and earth for us

1374. before we depend on him quickly?

1375. That's a convicting question to me as

1376. well because I don't mean to say that

1377. out of sight, out of mind dependence is

  1378. somehow okay. I don't think God's

1379. pleased with the fact that there's

1380. something in me that is like, eh, today

1381. I'm just going to forget that I depend

1382. on God for everything, including

  1383. removing tile.

1384. So, let's continue here. And the king

1385. said to her, "What is it, Queen Esther?

1386. What is your request? It shall be given

1387. to you even to the half of the kingdom.

1388. And you would expect this is the moment

1389. she'd lay the hammer down. Kill Hmon.

1390. He's trying to kill me and all my people

1391. including the guy that saved you. Now

1392. what she does, really interesting.

1393. Esther said, "If it pleased the king,

1394. let the king and Hmon come today to a

1395. feast that I have prepared for the

1396. king." Want to give Rebecca Egg, the

  1397. women's director, credit for this. I

1398. hope I'm quoting her right because it

1399. was a really pity quote. Um, Esther

1400. knows that the way to men's heart is

  1401. through their stomach.

  1402. You've got a wise uh women's director.

1403. She can help explain very strange ways

1404. of men to you. I think

1405. I'm vetoing at least three other jokes

1406. aimed at the other gender right now. The

1407. only other gender, by the way.

  1408. I guess I wasn't vetoing ever. That one

  1409. slipped through.

1410. Oh my gosh. I'll I'll tell you another

1411. funny story, completely unrelated, but

1412. related to construction metaphors. I

1413. worked for a year and a half for a

1414. contractor. And I am the kind of guy

1415. that likes to think of smarter ways of

1416. doing for doing things. And I think

1417. contractors in general are the kind of

1418. people that like to resist doing things

1419. any way that's different than theirs.

1420. And in this case, however, I forget what

1421. it was, but I made some ridiculous. Oh,

1422. I now I remember we were in the West

1423. Hills gigantic house. They were bringing

1424. in a uh uh aquarium that's as was as

1425. long as like the beginning of the rose

1426. to the back of the rose and about as

1427. wide. Massive MTV cribs kind of house. I

1428. just dated myself. I don't even know if

1429. they do. I don't even know if MTV still

1430. exists. But anyway, uh we're carrying it

1431. in with those suction cup holder things.

  1432. I don't even know what they're called,

1433. but you suction them on the handles, you

1434. know. Um and so we're carrying it in.

1435. Back then I was even stronger than I am

1436. now, so I was helpful in doing that. We

1437. carried it in, put it there, and then I

1438. was asked to get up on like a 40ft

1439. ladder and take a like one of those

1440. knives, you know, the razor blade

1441. knives, and cut out about an inch worth

1442. of caulking on the side of windows that

1443. had degraded. And it was against stucco.

1444. So, I'm holding on to the ladder and

1445. ripping through and I'm like, and by the

1446. way, that like the stucco wrecks your

1447. blade immediately and you don't have

1448. time. So, I'm mostly just forcing it,

1449. ripping it through, and then it would

1450. slip and the ladder would wobble. And

1451. I'm looking down. It's one of these

1452. houses in the West Hills where it's like

1453. built on a built on a hill already. So,

  1454. it's like 60 ft down and you're dead,

1455. you know. Um, and so I had a brilliant

1456. idea, uh, which I still to this day

  1457. wasn't allowed to do. It's like, I'll

1458. take those suction cups and stick it on

1459. the window, which is a way more stable

1460. thing than pulling on the ladder, and do

1461. that. And when I suggested it to, he had

1462. all these pathy sayings. Um, and I'd

1463. said that he goes, "Have you ever seen

1464. Aladdin?" I said, "Yeah." He said, "I

1465. wish I had a genie's lamp so that all

1466. three wishes could be that you didn't

  1467. say that."

1468. And I laughed and got back up in the

1469. ladder and did it his way. Um, but

1470. anyway, that has nothing to do with the

1471. story. Just a funny thought that came to

1472. mind related to to this. So, um, you can

1473. tell I like dry humor at my expense. So,

1474. that's just what I'm like. Um, so back

1475. to the story here, though. Uh, she asks

  1476. for

  1477. a feast. Remember, she hasn't seen a

1478. hassaurus for like 30 days. Um, and so I

1479. think there's wisdom in that. I think

1480. there's wisdom that and also it shows it

1481. shows patience. Uh then the king said,

1482. "Bring Hmon quickly so that we may do as

1483. Esther has asked." So the king and Hmon

1484. came to the feast that Esther had

  1485. prepared. I think that's a really

1486. important word. Okay. Can we go back to

1487. the main point? Cuz I want to prove to

1488. you when I have main points that they're

1489. really derived directly from the passage

1490. when when we depend on God for a wise

1491. plan. How do we know she had a wise

1492. plan? Well, for one, it's wise to fast.

1493. um might not always be wise for you to

1494. fast because you might have mitigating

1495. circumstances where like a food fast or

1496. food and water fast is like not actually

1497. good for you. So, I think talking to a

1498. physician about that might be a wise

1499. thing. But remember, fasting is

1500. dependence on the Lord. And and what he

1501. needs to see is that you're actually

1502. dependent on him, right? And there's

1503. other ways of fasting of things, too.

  1504. I I was at a guy's night. One more

1505. story. I was at a guy's night and uh we

1506. were talking about fasting and all the

1507. guys were talking like, "Yeah, fasting

1508. is just so hard for me." And uh then one

1509. guy, I love fasting. And before he even

1510. got the words out, another guy put his

1511. drink down and said, "Well, maybe you

1512. should fast from that then."

1513. I thought that was, you guys didn't

1514. think that was hilarious, but I thought

1515. fasting from fasting was uh Yeah.

1516. Anyway, um we'll edit that one out.

  1517. So, they're sitting down. She's prepared

1518. this. So, she had come in with a plan.

  1519. That's obvious. She'd already planned.

  1520. It wasn't just a gut instinct like she's

1521. like, "He's telling me I can have what I

1522. want." Ah, dear in a headlight, let's

1523. eat. That's not it. She had planned to

1524. have them have a feast. Um, and it seems

1525. like she seems to have planned to have

1526. the second feast, too, which makes a lot

1527. of people ask, why did she listen to

1528. this? So, and as they were drinking wine

1529. after the feast, the king said to

1530. Esther, "What is your wish? It shall be

1531. granted to you, and what is your

1532. request? Even to the half of my kingdom,

1533. it shall be fulfilled." And then my

1534. answer and then Esther answered my wish

1535. and my quest is this. If I have found

1536. favor in your sight of the king and if

1537. it pleases the king to grant my wish and

1538. to fulfill my request, let the king and

1539. Hmon come to a feast that I will prepare

1540. for them and tomorrow I would do as the

1541. king has said. You know how sometimes uh

1542. when you read your mind like kicks out

1543. of gear and you're not listening to

1544. things you're reading? That happened to

1545. me while I was reading this one time and

  1546. I was like, "Wait a minute."

1547. And then I had to read it twice and I

1548. was like, "Oh yeah, she asked twice for

1549. a feast." And why? And I don't know the

1550. answer to that. The Bible doesn't tell

1551. us exactly why she asked it. I mean,

1552. there's multiple answers that are sort

1553. of satisfying to me. One would be

1554. because God had plans to expose Morai

1555. even more deeply before Esther said it

1556. out loud. Another one would be that

1557. again, the stomach is the way to the

1558. heart of a man. And so she's wanting to

1559. uh make sure they're in the best

1560. possible mood. Period. Uh but when when

1561. we don't know and the Bible doesn't say

1562. exactly the answer, sometimes it's just

1563. best not to even speculate. One thing I

1564. think that is clear is that she's being

1565. patient with the plan. Uh she's in the

1566. presence of Hmon who wants to have her

1567. killed. He doesn't even know it cuz he

1568. doesn't know she's Jewish at this point.

1569. Uh to wants her to have her killed and

1570. wants her uncle, her father figure

1571. killed and wants all of the Jews killed

1572. and is is like going to come through on

1573. that promise. He's already had it be uh

1574. proclaimed throughout the entire Persian

1575. Empire. So very very evil dude. You

1576. know, imagine being in that situation

1577. and you know like you got to poker face

1578. it. You can't give any tells about

1579. what's going on. Uh not an easy thing to

1580. do and again doesn't matter whether it's

1581. easy or hard. You can't do anything

1582. without God anyway. Well, she's clearly

1583. dependent on him and definitely has a

1584. plan. And we're going to stop there

1585. today. Um, and we'll find out actually

1586. not until chapter 7 exactly how the

1587. plan, you already know, but how the plan

1588. concludes. There's these kind of sheen

1589. changes and shifts of focus before that.

1590. Um, but I want to put the main point

1591. back up and then I want to go to Hebrews

1592. 4 and conclude here. When we depend on

1593. God for a wise plan in a time of

1594. conflict, we can serve his righteous

1595. outcome. God could have written the

1596. story in such a way that um Hmon got the

1597. better of Esther and then Esther would

1598. have been a martyr. Sometimes martyrdom

1599. is God's righteous outcome. And so I'm

1600. not saying that you will always get the

1601. exact sess or that there's some kind of

1602. like uh formula for getting your way.

1603. That's not the point. That's not how

1604. it's meant. But you can be certain when

1605. you depend on God for a wise plan in a

1606. time of conflict, we can serve his

1607. righteous outcome. Now, Esther had to be

1608. terrified to go to King Xerxes because

1609. he was obviously the type of man that

1610. would execute people just for coming

1611. into his presence. And I'd like to

1612. compare that to what King Jesus is like.

1613. So, we'll go to our last passage and

1614. conclude because that's where you need

1615. to go for dependence. That's where I

1616. need to go for dependence. Here's Hebrew

  1617. 4. Hebrews 4. Therefore, while the

1618. promise of entering is rest still

1619. stands. Um, actually, did I just a

  1620. second?

1621. I'm in the wrong place. Yeah. No.

  1622. Hebrews 4:14.

    Hebrews 4:14

1623. Since then, we have a great high priest

1624. who passed through the heavens, Jesus

1625. the son of God, let us hold fast to our

1626. confession. For we do not have a high

1627. priest who is unable to sympathize with

1628. our weaknesses, but one who in every

1629. every respect has been tempted as we

  1630. are, yet without sin.

1631. Every respect. Did Jesus have to

1632. surrender fear? Did he have to surrender

1633. his own will before going to the cross?

  1634. Yes, he did.

1635. Sweat like blood dropped from his head.

  1636. He's overwhelmed. He's a human being,

  1637. too. He's God, but he's a human being.

1638. And he experienced temptation just like

1639. we did. In fact, before his ministry

1640. really even began in the way that we

1641. know it in the Gospels, he was tempted

1642. by the enemy to avoid the cross as well.

1643. He was tempted by his own close friend

1644. Peter through Satan to avoid the cross

1645. and he had to surrender his own will to

  1646. go there.

1647. So consider the difference between

1648. Xerxes. Xerxes you have to be afraid to

1649. go into his presence or he might kill

1650. you. Jesus died for you to make a way

  1651. into his presence.

1652. Exactly the opposite character of a

1653. king. And that's why it says, "Let us

1654. then with confidence draw near to the

1655. throne of grace that we may have

1656. received mercy and find grace to help in

  1657. time of need

1658. where just evaluate in your own heart

1659. and ask for the Holy Spirit to help you

1660. evaluate now and even before you go to

1661. the Lord's table today. Do you have

1662. confidence in going to the Lord's table?

1663. Do you have confidence in drawing near

1664. to him to find the mercy and grace you

1665. need for help to resolve a conflict?

1666. Some situation that's not going the way

1667. it ought to be, some difficulty, some

1668. reconciliation with a friend. Well,

  1669. let's just take reconciliation for a

1670. second. Someone sinned against you and

1671. you know you need to go to them and and

1672. say, "This really hurt me. I felt like

1673. that was a sin." Um, and I wish you

1674. would say you're sorry. You might say to

1675. yourself, "Well, they're the ones that

1676. did it. They have to come to me first."

1677. But you already know what God's told you

1678. to do. Do your part in reconciliation.

1679. Sometimes you have to be the bigger

1680. person, the more Christlike person, and

1681. go to them, even though the one you're

1682. the one hurt. But now, let's say you're

1683. drawing near to the Lord for

1684. you're wanting to draw near to the Lord

1685. for help with that, for help with the

  1686. reconciliation. You're tending to

1687. depend. But what's he going to tell you

1688. about what you need to do first? Even if

1689. they haven't admitted that they did

  1690. anything wrong.

1691. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted,

1692. forgiving one another as God forgave you

1693. in Christ. How did God forgive you in

1694. Christ? Completely. When did God forgive

1695. you in Christ? Long before you repented.

1696. It was his kindness that went before

1697. repentance. And so in this case, God

1698. actually calls us to copy that character

1699. attribute of his merciful forgiveness.

1700. So then would it be depending on God if

1701. you're wanting to go towards reconciling

1702. in a relationship to someone to have an

1703. unforgiving heart in advance? God knows

1704. whether you're willing to forgive the

1705. person. No matter how deep the

1706. forgiveness is, if you want to depend on

1707. him, you need to draw on his power to

1708. forgive first. Even if the other person

1709. was the one that sinned against you

1710. first. That's what it looks like to

1711. forgive others as God has forgiven you.

1712. And that's just one example. Well,

1713. there's so many other type of conflicts

1714. we face. So that would interrupt your

1715. confidence then, wouldn't it? You could

1716. with false bar bravado go to the king,

1717. but there isn't really this fear of the

1718. Lord in your heart. This reverence that

1719. says, "I will obey no matter how much it

1720. costs. Please give me help with this."

1721. Right? Maybe the reason for your lack of

  1722. confidence is is different. I don't

1723. know. But according to the Bible, we've

1724. been given everything we need for life

1725. and godliness. That includes the

1726. confidence we need to approach Jesus on

1727. his high priestly throne. He's the high

1728. priest, the one true prophet. He's the

1729. king. He's he's everything to us. And

1730. so, and he's the only way to the father,

1731. too. And he's the only forgiveness, the

1732. only atonement for sin. And he's the

1733. only one who can help us to resolve a

1734. conflict, to give us a wise plan, to

1735. give us the follow-through, strength,

1736. and conviction to do it. And so I I

1737. obviously do not know all of the kinds

1738. of conflicts that you have, the issues

1739. that you're wanting to resolve, the ways

1740. that you need to depend on the Lord. But

1741. I think even right now as the musicians

1742. come up and lead us in worship again,

1743. and as you prepare your heart, as you

1744. examine yourself to go to the table,

1745. when you're willing to relinquish

1746. everything, like Esther, if I die, I

1747. die. When you're willing to take up your

1748. own cross, when you're willing to

1749. relinquish your everything in your life,

1750. the whole thing, everything that God's

1751. made clear to you that you need to let

1752. go and then abide in the vine again, you

1753. can be absolutely certain that that kind

1754. of dependence will gain the help of the

1755. Lord. When we depend on God for a wise

1756. plan in a time of conflict, we can serve

1757. his righteous outcome. Heavenly Father,

1758. thank you for this message. Thank you

1759. for your word. Thank you for your power.

1760. And as always, more than anything, thank

1761. you for being the king who died for our

1762. sin so that we can come into your

1763. presence and find the mercy and grace we

1764. need for help in our lives, especially

1765. when we're walking into something uh

1766. like a conflict that we already know we

1767. have to depend on you for. I pray that

1768. you would make our hearts dependent,

1769. that you would help us to relinquish

1770. what we need to, and that we would be

1771. able to serve your righteous outcomes in

  1772. Jesus name. Amen.
