  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. >> Am I loud? I I feel loud.

  3. >> I'm loud without a mic.

  4. Welcome to Boon Ferry. My name is Mati

  5. Scaring. I see quite a few new people

  6. here and uh I'd love for you to fill out

  7. a welcome card if you're comfortable

  8. with that. Give us whatever information

  9. you want. If you turn it into the

  10. connection table on your right as you're

  11. walking down the stairs or right before

  12. the stairs, uh we've got a gift card for

  13. you. Usually some card like to Dutch

  14. Bros or something like that. Not sure

  15. exactly what it is right now, but um

  16. it's just a way for us to connect and

  17. you connect with us if you want to know

  18. more more about the church. Um we're at

  19. a size as a church where I think people

  20. sort of assume pastors are really busy

  21. and pastors of large churches sometimes

  22. have more staff than we have people

  23. attending our church. And so they even

  24. like Ay Creek for example I think has

  25. more staff than there are days in the

  26. year. So even if Brett wanted to meet

  27. with uh with every single one, he'd be

  28. having to meet with a staff member every

  29. single year. So it's it becomes

  30. impossible at some point for a pastor to

  31. have a close relationship to everyone in

  32. the church. But we're not at that point

  33. yet. We love having people over to our

  34. house. Uh we love hanging out. We love

  35. going to lunch after church, things like

  36. that. So um don't think I'm too busy to

  37. meet with you. I'm I'm just really not.

  38. I've got time and uh I get paid for it.

  39. So,

  40. all right. Well, um Oh, we also use our

  41. welcome cards as prayer requests and the

  42. prayer team really enjoys praying for

  43. your um requests and we also love

  44. hearing a report of when God has

  45. answered those prayers. So, if you have

  46. anything that you'd like to pray for,

  47. nothing too big, nothing too small, let

  48. us know. turn that in also at the

  49. connection table and you will get prayed

  50. for. All right, I'm going to go ahead

  51. and pray and we can get right into

  52. Esther chapter 8. We're doing all of

    Esther 8 chapter mention

  53. chapter 8 1-1 17 today and there's only

  54. 10 chapters, so we're marching right

  55. through. We'll be finished in June and

  56. then we're going to the Psalms for the

  57. summer and we'll be doing the Psalms for

  58. about eight weeks every summer in June

  59. and July or excuse me, July and August

  60. for the foreseeable future. I'm guessing

  61. it's probably going to be almost a

  62. decade of the Psalms. So, I'm looking

  63. forward to that. Um,

  64. yeah, let me pray. Father, thank you for

  65. the opportunity on a beautiful day like

  66. this, a day that you've made and we can

  67. rejoice in it to look into your word.

  68. Thank you for the hunger in our

  69. congregation. It's a huge blessing to me

  70. to preach to a congregation that's

  71. excited and interested and passionate

  72. about your word and what it has to say

  73. for our lives. I pray that we'd hear

  74. what you're saying to our church through

  75. your spirit through your word today in

  76. Esther chapter 8 very clearly that we

    Esther 8 chapter mention

  77. would know how it applies to our

  78. individual lives and that we'd have the

  79. power to actually live according to what

  80. we're learning and not just be hearers

  81. of the word but doers. I pray these

  82. things in Jesus name. Amen. I want to

  83. start off with a story about an elder

  84. meeting the elders just had this last

  85. week uh because it connects to something

  86. in Esther 8 and it's also just a awesome

  87. God moment. A moment where God really

  88. showed up in a way that just couldn't be

  89. coincidental and all the elders

  90. recognized it. Um and I'm going to tell

  91. you more about what the elders were

  92. praying about at another time. I want to

  93. focus on chapter 8 today. So I'm going

  94. to curtail the details, but one thing

  95. that we were praying for was just Boon's

  96. fair protection for Boon Fairy. Uh

  97. protection over our finances, protection

  98. over our relationships, protection over

  99. the teaching, protection in every way.

  100. Uh the elders and I are passionate about

  101. protecting the congregation and

  102. protecting what God is building here.

  103. And that passion comes from him and it

  104. comes from his word. It's not a passion

  105. I had while while I was making football

  106. an idol at all. I couldn't have cared

  107. less about serving the Lord in uh

  108. building up his church and protecting uh

  109. the church through whatever means he's

  110. given me to do that. But now I'm

  111. passionate about it. And so we actually

  112. went and prayed through every single

  113. room in the church, including the broom

  114. closets and the stairs closet. And

  115. prayers for those different areas come

  116. to mind. You might think, oh, why are

  117. you praying for the closet underneath

  118. the uh stairs? But it has a bunch of

  119. construction materials in it. And so one

  120. thing we were praying for was that we

  121. would have the means to be able to take

  122. care of some of our capital um

  123. improvements that we need to do. We

  124. we've found leaks. I don't know if you

  125. can tell because our team did a great

  126. job. Now now it might bother you, but

  127. there's a streak down. This is um lime,

  128. like sandy lime paint. That's what gives

  129. it kind of almost the concrete look. And

  130. there's a leak there. And this is

  131. drywall up here, too. So a leak destroys

  132. things. It's one thing if it's leaking

  133. from cuz those boards go directly and

  134. that I don't even know that there's

  135. underllayment. It's just roofing tile.

  136. There might be underllayment, but we're

  137. having some leaking issues on our roof.

  138. Um, as our church grows, uh, we need to

  139. take care of the parking lot and

  140. potentially put in a couple uh, more

  141. parking spots. And so, we just have

  142. certain things that we're looking to do.

  143. And just looking at the construction

  144. materials prompted that. Uh, one of we

  145. started in the prayer room. One of the

  146. first rooms we actually went to was um

  147. Becky Grandon's office and she's our um

  148. operations manager, but within the scope

  149. of her work, she also does the budgeting

  150. for the church. And so we prayed for the

  151. finances. So we're in the office praying

  152. for the finances. I'll be giving you an

  153. update. There's some um making up we

  154. need to do this year in terms of our

  155. giving oblig obligations, the things

  156. that we have built into the budget that

  157. are um we can't just get rid of like

  158. fixed overhead costs kind of things. And

  159. um so we prayed that we'd be able to

  160. make up that budget because a lot of the

  161. financial work happens in the office.

  162. And uh then we walked downstairs and by

  163. the time we'd made it into like kind of

  164. the second um uh furnace room uh and

  165. janitorial room, I had gotten a little

  166. ding on my um on my email like I'd

  167. gotten an email and I clicked on it and

  168. I looked and I don't I don't see who

  169. gives what, but I do get updates when

  170. giving comes in electronically and there

  171. was a $10,000 gift

  172. have it got just got deposit. So, it was

  173. like minutes after we prayed that ding,

  174. $10,000. And I talked to Becky about

  175. that. Becky's the only person that sees

  176. who gives what. She has to issue tax

  177. returns. So, there's no way. The elders

  178. are protected from that cuz we don't

  179. want the kind. It's just like we're

  180. recusing ourselves in finding that out.

  181. Um uh we do think it's it's a faithful

  182. thing to give sacrificially. Uh but we

  183. don't want to know who gives what. And I

  184. think that's good. Um however, in this

  185. case, uh Becky, I think, didn't even

  186. recognize who the person is. they don't

  187. attend our church.

  188. Um, and so that just seemed like all the

  189. more of a God thing. So I showed the

  190. elders and they were just like really

  191. and rejoicing and just the immediate

  192. answer to prayer. We felt helped by him.

  193. Yeah, you can clap for God.

  194. Absolutely.

  195. So, as we were doing, I think the most

  196. powerful thing anyone can ever do in the

  197. pursuit of serving the Lord with the

  198. intent to protect others from evil. Um,

  199. the schemes of the enemy, uh, the kinds

  200. of works of the flesh that destroy

  201. relationships, dissension and

  202. disunityity and things like that. As we

  203. were doing that, which is a heart God

  204. has given us, didn't come from us, it

  205. came from him to love the church in that

  206. way. Uh we also experienced his powerful

  207. help with immediacy and the same thing

  208. happens for Esther um today and and she

  209. she is has such a passion to serve uh

  210. her people as the queen and to represent

  211. them to the king and to save them from

  212. this terrible evil plan that Hmon had

  213. come up with. And she finds help from

  214. God with favor with the king. And that

  215. then leads to people rejoicing. Uh, and

  216. not just Jews. People in Susa that

  217. weren't Jews were rejoicing too. And

  218. I'll show you that. And so, if you

  219. remember nothing else today, I always

  220. like to give you my main point up front

  221. and repeat it multiple times. It's that

  222. when leaders are passionate about

  223. protecting others from evil, God helps

  224. them and the people rejoice.

  225. When leaders are passionate about

  226. protecting others from evil, God helps

  227. them and the people rejoice. And you

  228. might think, well, what does this have

  229. to do with me? I'm not a leader. um

  230. that's that's probably not true. You may

  231. not be a leader with significant

  232. responsibility. Uh you may be in a in a

  233. institution as an employee where you're

  234. not really in a leadership role, but for

  235. one, you always have influence with

  236. others. Mothers, especially young

  237. mothers, you're definitely leading your

  238. children. Husbands are leading their

  239. family. If if you're in a job where um I

  240. was just talking to someone in the

  241. congregation and since I didn't ask for

  242. I'll just keep it uh anonymous but this

  243. is a positive thing. Um uh this guy was

  244. having a a review uh with management and

  245. they were saying look everybody looks up

  246. to you as a leader.

  247. And uh they said in fact people have

  248. made comments about how when they know

  249. you're uh going to be working when

  250. you're scheduled to work they're excited

  251. to come to work. Um that first of all

  252. that was such a awesome encouragement to

  253. this person but uh they also said one

  254. thing we've noticed that you sometimes

  255. come a little bit late and since you're

  256. such a leader and have so much influence

  257. and I don't think he's in a management

  258. position since you're such a leader and

  259. have so much influence uh we're asking

  260. for you to be a better model of that

  261. because people say well if so and so

  262. does it since they looked up to you I

  263. can do it too. So in any situation

  264. people are looking at how you live and

  265. you have an example to them and and if

  266. you're passionate about protecting

  267. others from evil that is a leadership

  268. example even just to peers and what it

  269. leads to is gaining God's help and then

  270. people rejoice people around you will

  271. rejoice when uh when they see that

  272. protection coming to fruition.

  273. So you can think in any kind of context

  274. whether it's a work or your marriage. Um

  275. you know and wives can protect their

  276. husbands as well. There's there's a lot

  277. of ways in which uh Esther was

  278. protecting the king as well that we

  279. could talk about. And so um kids can

  280. protect their parents. Uh we have a

  281. responsibility to one another to be like

  282. a brother or sister's keeper. And you

  283. might see someone that's overwhelmed and

  284. maybe being tempted. And one kind word

  285. or one redirective word or one

  286. encouraging word is the very thing that

  287. protects them from falling to that

  288. temptation. That is also a type of

  289. protection uh from evil. You might even

  290. think forgiving someone or apologizing

  291. to someone being a way that we can be

  292. passionate serving others and protecting

  293. them from evil because when you don't

  294. forgive someone, a bitter roots springs

  295. up and it defiles relationship

  296. relationships uh it it it breaks them uh

  297. at a at an attitude at an emotional

  298. level. There's lots of different ways to

  299. protect people. Um so whether that

  300. protection is literally physical like it

  301. is for some of you in your jobs um

  302. protecting other people as a law

  303. enforcement officer or whether it's a

  304. spiritual protective thing all of us

  305. have a role to play in that. Let me

  306. state it one more time. When leaders are

  307. passionate about protecting others from

  308. evil, God helps them and the people

  309. rejoice. So let's get right into it. You

  310. can see right from the get-go just how

  311. passionate Esther is. Just in terms of

  312. review, um, Hmon's plot has been

  313. exposed. We watched God do that through

  314. Esther in chapter 7, and he's been

  315. executed. And so, that's where we are in

  316. the story. And remember, his plot was

  317. not just to kill a population of like a

  318. a small region of Jews. Uh, if you

  319. looked at the map, I showed you guys

  320. guys that in the first sermon in the

  321. introductory sermon. If you looked at

  322. the map, the uh Persian Empire, empire

  323. of the Persians and the Mes spans

  324. basically the whole known and populated

  325. world. So it's basically a global threat

  326. to the Jews to have them be killed. And

  327. this edict was made uh in a way. King

  328. Xerxes or Hassaweris as he's named here

  329. um was was tricked. He did not know that

  330. it was the Jewish people that Hmon was

  331. talking about. Hmon made it sound like

  332. they were just not law-abiding and that

  333. they were rebellious against Xerxes rule

  334. and so it was best for them to just be

  335. annihilated. Uh but I want to mention a

  336. detail because it said that it's men,

  337. women, and children that were to be

  338. annihilated. So imagine finding out,

  339. let's just say it was in America that a

  340. law was passed that on a certain date in

  341. the future, maybe a year from now.

  342. That's kind of what it was with with

  343. Esther. At this point in the story,

  344. we're about nine months out and before

  345. this the the month of Adar and the day

  346. that Hmon had chosen. Um, imagine that a

  347. law was passed and the Supreme Court

  348. didn't overturn it that anyone can just

  349. go out and kill conservative Christians,

  350. kill Christians in general, um, and kill

  351. your children and kill kill all the

  352. women as well. Imagine living under that

  353. fear. And in this case, you can't go

  354. anywhere. they couldn't go anywhere

  355. else. There was nowhere to really flee

  356. because Persia was in charge of

  357. everything. So, let's say you can't get

  358. out of a can't get out of America as

  359. well. Um, but you knew about a

  360. politician

  361. and he or she was not in the highest

  362. rank, but you knew they're Christian and

  363. working for you and that they cared

  364. about your life just as much as they

  365. cared about their own. That'd be pretty

  366. rare thing. I'm not personally

  367. convinced.

  368. I don't I ought not to be too jaded. I

  369. am sure there are politicians that care

  370. about the lives of Americans just as

  371. much as they do their own. However, it

  372. seems to be very rare these days and

  373. America seems to be getting pretty jaded

  374. about that. Like no politician can be

  375. trusted whatsoever and that's kind of

  376. been a similar sent sentiment but it

  377. seems like now especially kind of postco

  378. era uh politicians are more distrusted

  379. than ever in terms of having the best

  380. interest of the people in mind. Um, so

  381. Esther again shows up as a rare diamond

  382. of a woman because she's now a political

  383. leader and so is Morai that actually

  384. care about the lives of these Jews as

  385. much as they care about their own.

  386. Esther's already proven that by putting

  387. her life at peril for walking into the

  388. king unannounced, which there was a law

  389. against that that you'd be put to death

  390. with the only exception being if the

  391. king says no, you don't have to put this

  392. person to death. So, she already

  393. sacrificed our li her life. And that's

  394. one of the things I want you to notice

  395. even before we get into chapter 8 verse

  396. one.

  397. She's not just coming to this moment

  398. where she has an opportunity to ask the

  399. king and beg him for the lives of her

  400. people um with an all of a sudden

  401. transformed character. She's been

  402. surrendering all the way along since the

  403. very beginning of the story. She

  404. surrendered her very life. And anything

  405. I say beyond this is locked away from

  406. you if you don't start with this. If you

  407. want to have passion to serve others in

  408. the service of God, if you want to have

  409. passion to protect them from evil, you

  410. have to start with self-sacrifice,

  411. you have and and it's not extreme to say

  412. this, but you have to give up everything

  413. for Jesus Christ. Everything. If you're

  414. not giving up everything, you're really

  415. just saying he's not actually God.

  416. because it's reasonable for God to tell

  417. us to give up everything for him. It's

  418. reasonable for him to say that. That's

  419. not extreme. He's God. He's God. On top

  420. of it, he died for our sin even though

  421. he wasn't guilty of it. So, he's proven

  422. that he cares about our protection. Uh

  423. we learned, I think it was about a week

  424. ago, that that protection is actually

  425. also from God's wrath because he's a

  426. just God and he will not leave evil

  427. unpunished. And so Jesus protects us

  428. from God's wrath by taking on the wrath

  429. of God. Uh substituting his

  430. righteousness for our sin and vice

  431. versa, our sin uh for his righteousness

  432. and his righteousness for us. So

  433. we have a king who's worthy of our very

  434. lives, worthy of putting our lives at

  435. risk, worthy of laying our lives down

  436. altogether. You start there,

  437. there is a huge opportunity to continue

  438. growing in passion. You could lay your

  439. life down at one time, but then just

  440. stop getting into his word, which is

  441. like our daily food, our our daily bread

  442. in a way. Um, and and that passion will

  443. again. So, however, you could be in

  444. God's word regularly and not be very

  445. passionate about God because you're not

  446. surrendering your whole life. So, if

  447. you've been with us through Esther, you

  448. know Esther surrendered her whole life

  449. and you know she was mentored by Mori

  450. and you can tell based on what she knows

  451. about what's right and wrong that she's

  452. she understands God's law and his word

  453. and she's a godly woman. Um, and so just

  454. let's just read here in chapter 1 maybe

  455. 1 through 4 or chapter 8 1-4 and look at

  456. just how passionate she is. Verse one of

  457. chapter 8. On that day, King Ahazawaris

  458. gave the queen Esther

  459. uh gave to Queen Esther the house of

  460. Hmon, the enemy of the Jews. And

  461. Morortei came before the king for Estra

  462. told what he was to her. And the king

  463. took off his signate ring which he had

  464. taken from Hmon and gave it to Mordei.

  465. And Esther set Morortei over the house

  466. of Hmon. And we know by the end of

  467. chapter 10 that Morai is basically

  468. second in command. And it seems like

  469. that happens right here because it

  470. seemed earlier that there were no

  471. officials higher than Hmon other than

  472. the king. And so Morai has just been

  473. catapulted just like Joseph. He's like

  474. the viceroy of Egypt, viceroy of Persia.

  475. Just an amazing thing God has done. We

  476. already see God's help there uh to

  477. Esther and Mori. And Esther spoke again

  478. to the king. She fell at his feet and

  479. wept and pleaded with him to avert the

  480. evil plan of Hmon the Agite and the plot

  481. that he had devised against the Jews.

  482. Esther and Morai are already safe.

  483. They're in a fortress. They're in a

  484. citadel. They're high officials, queen

  485. and viceroy.

  486. So their lives are saved, right? There's

  487. no way the king was going to allow them

  488. to be to be killed. And yet look how

  489. much Esther actually cares about the

  490. lives of Jews she doesn't know and has

  491. never met.

  492. Jews hundreds maybe even thousands of

  493. miles away.

  494. And she cares so much that she falls at

  495. the feet of Xerxes and weeps and pleads

  496. with him to avert the evil plan that

  497. Hmon the Agite uh had had devised

  498. against the Jews.

  499. I I can say right now that I'm not that

  500. passionate about protecting others from

  501. evil. I'm passionate about it, but I I

  502. just have all throughout Esther been so

  503. impressed with her faithfulness, her

  504. humility, and in this case, her passion.

  505. And so, I want to ask you a question.

  506. Think about what you're passionate

  507. about. Our family's going on a camping

  508. trip. We're going to be near a lake. A

  509. friend of mine is an avid fisherman.

  510. Takes me fishing and we're going to be

  511. going fishing and I've I don't know why,

  512. but I've always kind of wanted to catch

  513. a cookie and so does he and they have

  514. cocon there and we've got a bunch of

  515. rods. The kids are going to be able to

  516. fish and the more I go fishing, the more

  517. I enjoy it. I think it'd probably be

  518. overblown to say I'm passionate about

  519. fishing. I'm passionate about hunting.

  520. Big game hunting in Oregon has become a

  521. passion of mine, but I'm starting to

  522. grow somewhat of a passion for fishing.

  523. I really enjoy it. In particular, I

  524. enjoy hanging out with friends. You get

  525. a lot of time talking. Sometimes you

  526. don't catch anything, you know. Um, so I

  527. really enjoy those relationships and

  528. having something to do while we're

  529. talking to with another with one

  530. another. And I just the feeling of

  531. having a fish hit your rod or I guess

  532. the bait and and then reeling it in and

  533. the excitement of finding out the size

  534. of the fish. I really do enjoy that. Uh

  535. so those are kind of hobbies. What are

  536. you actually passionate about? Are you

  537. passionate about sports? I'm mentioning

  538. things that are not wrong to be

  539. passionate about, but like what does

  540. your heart actually get excited about?

  541. Really good meals, going out. I get

  542. excited about that, too.

  543. um

  544. sports, hobbies of any kind, time with

  545. your kids, time with friends. What are

  546. you passionate about? And now think

  547. about that in relationship to a specific

  548. kind of serving of the Lord and that's

  549. protecting others. Do you find yourself

  550. comparatively like in this case I

  551. mentioned hunting. Am I at least as

  552. passionate about serving the Lord in

  553. relation to to protecting others as I am

  554. hunting?

  555. you know, and and and if not,

  556. something's wrong, even though that's

  557. not it's not bad to be hunting, to be uh

  558. uh passionate about hobbies. You know,

  559. it's it's great to be emotionally

  560. engaged in the things that you do that

  561. you enjoy. Um

  562. how passionate are you about serving the

  563. Lord and protecting others, whether

  564. that's your children, your wife, your

  565. husband, your friends, your church,

  566. your co-workers, your boss, whoever it

  567. is that you might have influence in

  568. protecting in that way. And and it seems

  569. to me like there's somewhat of a

  570. correlation between how passionate

  571. people are that and how much they

  572. recognize that God's helping them in

  573. that. When you're really passionate

  574. about serving the Lord, you quickly see

  575. just how much he's benefited you and how

  576. much he's helping you and answering your

  577. prayer. But when you're not particularly

  578. passionate, especially if you just have

  579. sort of apathy going on in that area in

  580. relationship to protecting others and

  581. serving them in that way, um you start,

  582. it's a strange thing. the flesh starts

  583. asserting itself and you start thinking

  584. that you're entitled to God's help with

  585. things and then you're upset with him

  586. when you're not getting it even though

  587. you're not even serving him in the way

  588. that he's made very clear he wants to be

  589. served uh according to his will

  590. according to his word and so it's kind

  591. of this vicious cycle where you're not

  592. because you're not that passionate about

  593. serving the Lord uh you don't recognize

  594. just how much he's helping you so you

  595. don't pray as much and so you don't

  596. spend as much time in his word because

  597. the power isn't active in your life

  598. because you're not really surrendered

  599. all that way. So when I say that it's

  600. really that passion, how do you get that

  601. passion? How do you care that much about

  602. other people? How do you actually

  603. consider others as more important than

  604. yourself in terms of service? And the

  605. answer is surrendered engagement with

  606. God's word. If you read God's word and

  607. really surrender to it, you're going to

  608. learn all kinds of things about God's

  609. character, all kinds of things about

  610. your own sin, any situation in your

  611. life. It says that we've been given

  612. everything we need for life and

  613. godliness through his great and precious

  614. promises. Everything we need for life

  615. and godliness. You got an issue that's a

  616. problem, the word has the solution.

  617. Sometimes it's actually the word will

  618. show you it's not about let's say you're

  619. in a time of like financial crisis you

  620. don't have enough call that famine uh

  621. the word says that we can do all things

  622. through him who strengthens us and that

  623. is be content in this case in context

  624. even with being brought low. So

  625. sometimes the solution God's word is

  626. not, hey, do this and then you'll have

  627. more. You know, if if you're if if

  628. you're your own worst enemy financially,

  629. then the word has lots to say in the

  630. Proverbs about how to manage your money,

  631. how to work hard and be diligent and not

  632. get over your skis in terms of desire

  633. for things. Um, but if it's just kind of

  634. come upon you,

  635. if you are entrusting yourself to the

  636. Lord, did you know you can feel entirely

  637. content even though you don't even have

  638. enough food to eat? Paul said that's the

  639. secret that he can do all things through

  640. him who strengthens him. And Paul would

  641. be in chains and uh Romans were not uh

  642. known for treating the prisoners well.

  643. So, he I'm sure was hungry when he was

  644. in prison and he learned how to be

  645. content in that anyway. and and that's a

  646. victory if you think of contentment in

  647. the Lord as victory as actually drawing

  648. on the strength of Jesus Christ in your

  649. life to be content in any and all

  650. circumstances. Um, and if you see being

  651. discontented and especially having a

  652. pattern where I think we call that like

  653. malcontent when you're just constantly

  654. not content as a loss. Um and and a loss

  655. that harms your relationship to God and

  656. to others to God because he's always

  657. given you everything you need uh to deal

  658. with any and every situation with a

  659. right heart attitude but also harms

  660. others because your witness to others

  661. ought to be that God is over abundantly

  662. enough for you. No matter you know whom

  663. have I in heaven but you and on earth

  664. there is nothing I desire beside you.

  665. That that the reality of that as how

  666. deep it's anchored in your heart gets

  667. really exposed in times of famine. Was

  668. it really true that you love him more

  669. than anything else on earth? And

  670. compared to him, you have nothing of

  671. value? Well, when we're content, even in

  672. difficult circumstances, it shows others

  673. how good God is. Did you know that

  674. contentment

  675. um is just a being a model of

  676. contentment by drawing on the strength

  677. of Christ is a way to protect others

  678. from discontentedness.

  679. You know, in marriage, discontentment

  680. with your partner, I think, is often

  681. what's cited, at least in my experience

  682. in in uh marriage counseling as as

  683. things that make for a road leading to

  684. divorce.

  685. Cuz who feels love when you're

  686. discontented with them? Nobody.

  687. And maybe you're discontented because

  688. you don't feel loved by that person. So,

  689. like, are you content with your husband?

  690. Are you content with your wife? They're

  691. not perfect. They do not meet all of

  692. your needs. They do frustrating things.

  693. They're selfish sometimes.

  694. And sometimes they say mean things. And

  695. yet we already know that contentment

  696. that comes from the spirit is not

  697. subject to circumstance

  698. or changes in details in your life. It's

  699. a spiritual thing. So take any fruit of

  700. the spirit and you can apply it in terms

  701. of being a protective model towards

  702. others. And this happens to me. I'll get

  703. grumbly in my heart and and somebody is

  704. just so joyful even though their

  705. situation is worse than mine and it's so

  706. convicting and then all of a sudden I

  707. repent and ask God for forgiveness for

  708. grumbling in that way and being

  709. complainy and I'm filled again with the

  710. spirit and I the day brightens up like

  711. the clouds parted. I know you've

  712. experienced things like this probably in

  713. every type of different spiritual fruit.

  714. So passion and all good things in

  715. relationship to being fully in on

  716. serving the Lord no matter how hard it

  717. gets that comes from God's word. So if

  718. you're not in his word um the way to

  719. become more passionate about his word is

  720. to be in his word. And you might think

  721. well that's kind of circular reasoning

  722. and it definitely is. God is the one who

  723. gives you passion for God. That is how

  724. that works. Nobody else can fill you

  725. with passion to serve the Lord other

  726. than the Lord. And he does that through

  727. his word. Um, and by the way, right now,

  728. if you're not passionate about his word

  729. and you're feeling apathetic and you're

  730. kind of in a dry season, um, I'm not

  731. feeling that way myself, but I've felt

  732. that way before. You almost can't

  733. imagine being excited about being in his

  734. word. And so, it feels like a slog to

  735. commit to reading in the morning or

  736. whenever you have time and to pray. But

  737. as you do, it becomes more exciting to

  738. me. I was excited to share with you how

  739. God brought in $10,000 from an unknown

  740. source right as we were still praying

  741. and only minutes after we'd asked for

  742. it. Like God is so good. I was looking

  743. forward to coming and worshiping this

  744. morning. And I didn't have to like drum

  745. up the interest not to go through the

  746. emotions. It's real. It's genuine. It's

  747. from the spirit. And you can have it

  748. too, but it comes through God's word. So

  749. everything else in my sermon will

  750. already be worthless if you're lacking

  751. the passion to serve the Lord by

  752. protecting others from evil. But you've

  753. been given the solution now. And so make

  754. a plan. How about today? You guys love

  755. practical uh applications. Uh I never

  756. get more encouraging remarks after the

  757. sermon than when I make a PLA practical

  758. application like really practical down

  759. to earth rubber meets the road. So, how

  760. about today after lunch, you decide that

  761. before you do anything else, you're

  762. going to spend 15 minutes in the word.

  763. Maybe just go to the Gospel of John.

  764. Especially if it's kind of a hard

  765. startup, just start reading the Gospel

  766. of John. Maybe go where we do a Bible

  767. read through called Word Like Fire. You

  768. can join it at any time. The goal is

  769. just to embed more Bible reading in our

  770. daily lives. find out. You can go to the

  771. website, go to Word Like Fire under the

  772. resources tab and find out what the

  773. passage is for today and read that. It's

  774. usually less than three chapters. Will

  775. take you less than 15 minutes. And then

  776. pray this prayer. God, fill me with

  777. passion to serve you. God, fill me with

  778. passion to serve you. That's it. Just do

  779. that and watch what God does. And I I if

  780. I remember, I may ask again next week.

  781. Did you want to read the Bible more on

  782. Monday after doing that today? I think

  783. you will. There's one practical

  784. application. But back to the story.

  785. Esther already has that passion. And you

  786. know, it reminds me of Nehemiah who's

  787. totally dis uh uh not discontent, but um

  788. his countenance is down. He's he's

  789. totally distraught and sad and grieved

  790. by the news that the wall of Jerusalem

  791. is still not been rebuilt. And

  792. so

  793. sometimes passion to serve others won't

  794. look exactly like won't look exactly

  795. like how Esther was serving. It's it's

  796. whatever protection people need. Um and

  797. so you're also an individual with a

  798. personality given by God and and if

  799. you're a Christian with spiritual gifts

  800. and you will have a heart for thing for

  801. things that others don't necessarily. So

  802. maybe when you walk by a person who is

  803. begging for change on the side of the

  804. road, your heart is just supernaturally

  805. filled with mercy for them. That might

  806. be because you have the gift of mercy

  807. and just the way that someone made you.

  808. Or maybe you find someone drifting off

  809. in the area of doctrine and because you

  810. have gifts in the area of knowledge and

  811. the way that God's made your

  812. personality, you really hone in on

  813. doctrine and you can talk to them and

  814. guide them away from the dangerous

  815. doctrine and you're passionate about

  816. that. Different body parts in the

  817. church, different people with different

  818. gifts, different personalities and

  819. different callings will get passionate

  820. in different ways about serving the Lord

  821. in a protective way. So you don't have

  822. to like, well, I'm not ever going to be

  823. used to like save someone's life. First

  824. of all, you don't know that. You don't

  825. know that. You ever talk to an alcoholic

  826. about how they just need to get free of

  827. it and you want to help them in any way,

  828. right? Well, you may be saving their

  829. life by talking to them about that. So,

  830. and and talking to them about the Lord

  831. and how he can spiritually help them

  832. break the chains of addiction, right?

  833. So, all kinds of different ways to be

  834. passionate about that. And uh you're

  835. going to get God's help because he never

  836. changes and he's always faithful and so

  837. did Esther. So I want us to think

  838. emotionally here. I'm not looking to

  839. like manipulate into tears, but think

  840. about having the kind of passion. It

  841. might be easiest to think about someone

  842. you really really love and their life is

  843. under deep threat and you're talking to

  844. somebody that can just wipe the thread

  845. out and take it away. And so you're just

  846. filled with emotion and begging this

  847. person to help. That's where she was

  848. when the king held out the go when the

  849. king held out the golden scepter to

  850. Esther. Verse four, Esther rose and

  851. stood before the king and she said, "If

  852. it pleased the king and and here if if I

  853. was a movie director, I would give the

  854. actor notes unless they already knew.

  855. Uh, I still want you recovering in this

  856. scene from weeping. Right? So, she's

  857. talking now, but she's probably short of

  858. breath. And you can still see the

  859. emotion on her eyes. If it pleased the

  860. king, and if I have found favor in his

  861. sight, and if the thing seems right

  862. before the king, and if I'm pleasing in

  863. his eyes, let an order be written to

  864. revoke the letters devised by Hmon the

  865. Agagite, the son of Hamadatha, which he

  866. wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all

  867. the provinces of the king.

  868. So now she's gotten her request out.

  869. There's just one huge problem and this

  870. is even directly from Daniel and and

  871. maybe a couple other places in

  872. scripture. So it's not just a historical

  873. detail. Even the scripture says that the

  874. law says that the laws of the Persians

  875. and the Mes cannot be revoked.

  876. I don't know who decided that. It seems

  877. like a terrible idea. I'm guessing it

  878. was decided to just give even greater

  879. weight to like an emperor god king. like

  880. if he says it, that's that.

  881. It obviously creates all kinds of legal

  882. problems and contradictions when you

  883. find out that that law wasn't actually

  884. having a good effect and you need to

  885. somehow do something, but you can't

  886. change the law. But their laws cannot be

  887. revoked and yet she's begging him to

  888. revoke this law. And here's the king's

  889. answer. Um, actually she's still talking

  890. to verse six. For how can I bear to see

  891. the calamity that is coming on my

  892. people? or how can I bear to see the

  893. destruction of my kindred?

  894. Before we even go on to what King

  895. Asserus responds, I just so much passion

  896. to protect her people. She's already

  897. protected. She's literally in a palace

  898. fortress and has basically bodyguards

  899. with her at almost all times, these

  900. Unix. So, she and Morai, her her closest

  901. kin, are protected. She's weeping for

  902. people she's never met whose children

  903. she does not know and she's never had

  904. any contact with. That's how much she

  905. cares. Even Queen Esther didn't get this

  906. passion just from herself that comes

  907. from God. It comes from God. I won't

  908. take credit for this application which

  909. another really practical application

  910. here. Um I don't I can see the face but

  911. I don't know the name. It's not a famous

  912. Christian, but I was watching this on

  913. YouTube. And um he said that so many of

  914. the Bible's commands are

  915. fulfilled

  916. when you have the intent and actually

  917. give good action and words to the intent

  918. to make others pe other people feel

  919. important. He said, I'm not talking

  920. about flattery. The Bible doesn't allow

  921. for flattery. It's a form of deception.

  922. But when you make people like when you

  923. decide in the morning, hey, everyone I

  924. come into contact today, I'm going to

  925. speak to them in a way that's going to

  926. make them feel important. It's going to

  927. show them that I care about them.

  928. It's not a quote, but I'll paraphrase

  929. something that somebody said about Billy

  930. Graham. It was around the time that he

  931. had passed and they had kind of like a

  932. memorial video of both celebrities and

  933. people that just your average people who

  934. had met Billy Graham and they took

  935. little recordings of them saying

  936. something about Billy Graham. And almost

  937. every one of them said this, but there

  938. was a particular woman that you could

  939. tell not a whole lot of people ever made

  940. feel important. But she got a

  941. conversation with Billy Graham and she

  942. said, "I'll never forget it. He made me

  943. feel like I was valuable to him. He

  944. looked me right in the eyes. He listened

  945. to what I had said. He asked me about my

  946. life and he prayed for me. I'll never

  947. forget it. I'll never forget it. I

  948. thought I c I can do that. I can make

  949. people feel important. And you know the

  950. best way I think I can do that

  951. personally, but it's probably true for

  952. everyone is listen to them and show

  953. interest in their lives.

  954. Listen to them and show interest in

  955. their lives.

  956. You could be protecting someone from

  957. terrible, deep, pit level discouragement

  958. just by having a conversation with them,

  959. showing interest in their lives and the

  960. things they're interested in with real

  961. eye contact. You know what? One of the

  962. things I think is the greatest enemy of

  963. that modern day busyness.

  964. Just always being so busy.

  965. I this woman was shocked that Billy

  966. Graham of all people, one of the most

  967. famous preachers of all time, so much

  968. responsibility, so many important things

  969. to be about, was focusing exclusively on

  970. her and showing interest in her life.

  971. I'm so impressed by that. I want to be

  972. more like that. I want that said about

  973. me when I die. He made me feel so

  974. valuable. You know why I really am so

  975. impressed by that? because it just

  976. reminds me so much of Jesus.

  977. You read through the gospels, one thing

  978. that's common in all of them is Jesus

  979. loving care for he's God. These are his

  980. creatures, every single one. And he

  981. cares for them. He's moved to compassion

  982. for them because he says they're like

  983. sheep without a shepherd and they're

  984. harassed by the shepherds they have

  985. because those are all legalists.

  986. So, he's moved to compassion for them.

  987. He cares about them. He spent time with

  988. the woman at the well. He cares about

  989. their physical needs. He cares even more

  990. about the needs of their soul, their

  991. eternal destiny. And so at times he has

  992. to tell them, look, you're just

  993. following me for bread. That's it. But

  994. he also says, I am the bread of life

  995. and I'm the water of life. I'm I'm the

  996. the well from which you drink that leads

  997. to eternal life and you'll never be

  998. thirsty again. He says to the the woman

  999. at the well. He cared about individuals.

1000. He cared deeply. He made them feel

1001. important. And he's the most important

1002. person who's ever lived on earth. So

1003. maybe if God in the flesh makes people

1004. feel important, we should make that an

1005. effort, too. And it is a protective

1006. thing to do. There's so many people that

1007. are discouraged. I forget who said it

  1008. but men uh

  1009. many men I I I think it's many men is

1010. the quote live a life of quiet

  1011. desperation

1012. feeling like they're not contributing

1013. anything of value like their life is not

1014. really worth living and because they're

1015. grinders they keep working they keep

1016. working and they put on a happy face but

1017. that's how they feel deep down and maybe

1018. maybe just you paying real interest

1019. listening listening to them and focusing

1020. on them and showing interest in their

1021. lives. Maybe that's the thing that

1022. actually helps them see, no, people do

1023. care and God cares because this person

1024. is a servant of the Lord. And you

1025. protect them from the kinds of

1026. devastating consequences that come from

  1027. long-term depression.

  1028. Man,

  1029. let's add that. I won't keep adding to

1030. the list, but make somebody feel

1031. important today. Not by flattery, but by

1032. paying attention, listening to them, and

1033. showing interest in their lives and the

1034. things that they're interested in.

1035. That was the kind of person Esther was.

1036. That's the kind of person I want to be

1037. because that's who our Lord is. So,

1038. going on verse six again, for how can I

1039. bear to see the calamity that is coming

1040. to my people? Or how can I bear to see

1041. the destruction of my kindred? Then King

1042. Ahasser said to Queen Esther and to Mori

1043. the Jew, "Behold, I have given Esther

1044. the house of Hmon, and they have hanged

1045. him on the gallows because he intended

1046. to lay hands on the Jews. But you may

1047. write as you please with regard to the

1048. Jews in the name of the king and seal it

1049. with the king's ring. For an edict

1050. written in the name of the king and

1051. sealed with the king's ring cannot be

1052. revoked." There it is. He can't just

1053. say, "Be gone with the first edict." It

1054. has to stay in effect. Okay. But he

1055. gives Esther the power to write a new

1056. edict. Okay. And ends up being Morai

1057. that writes it. So I kind of think that

1058. other than God, the person that used was

1059. used most in uh Esther's life to fill it

1060. with a kind of passion, sacrificial

1061. passion to serve other people is Morai.

1062. That's where she got it from on a human

1063. level. Morai is right here working for

1064. the very same thing in a way like a

1065. wingman, you know, cuz even though he's

1066. second in command, so there's ways he

1067. has more authority than Esther, there

1068. are also ways that Esther has more

1069. authority than him. Like she's the

1070. king's beloved, so she's got his ear in

1071. a way that no other man does. Uh

1072. husbands, you know what that's like.

1073. It's uh uh we ought to listen to our

1074. wives more than any other woman. Uh

1075. that's who's God given us as our as our

1076. helping partner and as our on mission

1077. co-pilot so to speak uh wing wingwoman

1078. wingman. And I see Morai in a lot of

1079. ways as just a absolute perfect example.

1080. Well not perfect great example of being

  1081. a good wingman.

  1082. So here's uh what Esther I it's Morai

1083. that comes up with it but I'm sure they

1084. talked about it and they come up with a

1085. plan. Uh verse 8, but you uh verse 9.

1086. And the king's scribes were summoned at

1087. that time in the third month with the

1088. months of Sivon uh on the 23rd day and

1089. an edict was written according to all

1090. that Mori commanded concerning the Jews

1091. to the satraps and the governors and

1092. officials of the provinces from India to

1093. Ethiopia 127 provinces to each province

1094. in its own script and to each people in

1095. its own language and also to the Jews in

1096. their script and their language.

1097. Remember Mori has some boundaries. He

  1098. can't revoke the edict. He can't write a

1099. law that says that edict is revoked. So

1100. it takes great wisdom to how to know to

1101. how to protect the Jews from an edict

1102. says anybody on this day can kill all

1103. Jews they want, man, woman, and

1104. children. So uh he's got to be wise. He

1105. would have needed God's help to know how

1106. what do I write that's the most powerful

1107. way to protect the Jews. Verse 10. And

1108. he wrote in the name of King Ahaweras

1109. and sealed it with the king's signate

1110. ring. Then he sent the letters by

1111. mounted couriers riding on swift horses

1112. and were used in the king's service bred

1113. from the royal stud. There's no expense

1114. spared. Right? This is another little

1115. calling card of God's when he just helps

1116. you in every single way. The very best

1117. horses. Now this is 9 months before that

1118. day you know where where anybody can

1119. harm the Jews they wants. And so just

1120. but there's still this sense of urgency

1121. to get the news out. And the reason

  1122. there's a reason for that verse 11

1123. saying that the king allowed the Jews

1124. who were in every city to gather and

1125. defend their lives to destroy to kill

1126. and to annihilate any armed force of any

1127. people or province that might attack

1128. them children and women included and to

1129. plunder their goods. So that's the law

1130. that Mori comes up with under the

1131. authority of the king to protect the

1132. Jews. It doesn't revoke the first one.

1133. It doesn't even fully negate it, but it

1134. allows for the Jews to actually protect

1135. themselves and not just be destroyed

1136. without any um hope of of survival. And

1137. it's a pretty powerful thing to consider

1138. self-defense like this. And so I'm going

1139. to read on because I I have a question

1140. for you. We asked it in our Bible

1141. studies on Wednesday evenings. They're

1142. called Disciplehip Communities. And the

1143. question was whether or not this edict

1144. provided legal uh protection for not

1145. only defensive actions but also

1146. offensive actions. And you might say,

1147. "Well, obviously only defensive." Well,

  1148. let's go on. And there's there's a word

1149. here that made some students of the

1150. Bible in our church and others that I

1151. know as well think, "Oh, maybe it was

1152. even for offensive action." So, we got

1153. to take the law very carefully. Um, and

1154. that includes Oregon laws about

  1155. self-defense, which I'm going to get

1156. into shortly. On one day throughout all

1157. the provinces of King Hasseris, on the

1158. 13th day of the 12th month, which is the

1159. month of Adar, nine months away from

1160. this month of Sivon, a copy of what was

1161. written was to be issued as a decree in

1162. every province being publicly displayed

1163. to all peoples and the Jews were to be

1164. ready on that day to take vengeance on

1165. their enemies. Uh, vengeance seems like

1166. it's kind of an offensive thing, you

1167. know, when you just intuitively like,

1168. wait a minute, can they just go out and

1169. like start killing people they think are

  1170. enemies? What's what's the deal here?

1171. Um, let me give you my sense. I'm I'm

1172. pretty confident about this. I think you

1173. will be as well of what the boundaries

1174. of this were. The edict is all important

1175. here. What it says is that the king

1176. allowed the Jews who are in every city

1177. to gather and defend their lives to

1178. destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any

1179. armed force of any people or province

1180. that might attack them, including if

1181. it's children and women that are

1182. attacking them and to plunder their

1183. goods. Now, we'll get to chapter nine

1184. next week. The Esers do not the Esther

1185. the Jews do not take advantage of the

1186. allowance to plunder the people. They

1187. don't do it. Okay? So, you can kind of

1188. just strike that from the record as

1189. irrelevant to this conversation because

1190. they never take advantage of it anyway.

1191. What it says though is that what they're

1192. allowed to do according to the king is

1193. to use lethal force against any armed

1194. force that might attack them.

1195. So, I believe that this word take

1196. vengeance on their enemies has to be

1197. bounded by that edict. It doesn't say

1198. anywhere for so so you might ask well

1199. were they allowed to go into homes and

1200. like kill a husband his wife and the

1201. children just on suspicion of them being

  1202. enemies. I don't think that was

1203. allowable according to this edict at

1204. all. Um I think that they were bound by

1205. the uh fact that it was self-defense and

1206. that this needed to be an armed force

1207. and they needed to be attacking. Now,

1208. I could imagine that there may have been

1209. a scenario that still fit the spirit of

1210. the law if there was an armed militia

1211. gathering and they and the Jews attacked

1212. them first knowing that their plan was

1213. to come attack surprise attack the king.

1214. So, they or surprise attack the Jews.

1215. So, they like reverse surprise attack

1216. them. Uh but they still had to be armed.

1217. So, I don't this was not a law saying,

1218. "Hey, you just go and kill children and

1219. women and and men even though they're

1220. not attacking you and aren't armed." I

1221. don't believe that that's meant uh by

  1222. the vengeance.

1223. So, I I've got another question for you.

1224. Do you know your own doctrine biblically

1225. in terms of self-defense? If I ask you

1226. the questions, are are there situations

1227. in which Christians are allowed to use

1228. lethal force to defend themselves and be

1229. right with God in doing so? That's a

1230. different question than being right with

1231. the state. We'll talk about that in a

1232. moment. But can you use lethal force to

1233. defend yourself in some situations as a

1234. Christian today against other human

1235. beings and still be right with the Lord?

1236. I believe yes, absolutely. Uh with a

1237. caveat in Oregon, which we'll talk about

1238. in a moment, but I want to show you how

1239. Jesus supports this himself because

1240. Jesus often gets painted as though he

1241. was a pacifist. And you just have to

1242. read Revelation and that dispels that

1243. Jesus character is exactly the same as

1244. God the Father's. And in the Old

1245. Testament, he's called a man of war. And

1246. Jesus is a man of war in Revelation. So,

  1247. I don't believe that's true. Um, so

  1248. let's go to Luke 22:36-38.

    Luke 22:36–38

1249. And I've been accused not by people in

1250. the church, but like online and comments

1251. and stuff of like um taking this passage

  1252. out of context. I don't I don't believe

1253. I'm taking this passage out of context.

1254. The context is that Jesus originally

1255. sent the disciples out on mission on

1256. like an evangelistic mission to, you

1257. know, preach the gospel and heal the

1258. sick and um uh cast out demons. And he

1259. told them to take nothing along with

1260. them, but to just trust the Lord for

1261. provision along the way. But here he

1262. says something else. So they didn't need

  1263. a nap. They didn't need like a money

1264. purse. They didn't need an extra cloak.

1265. They didn't need to take food along with

1266. them. It was an exercise in showing them

1267. that God was going to provide all their

1268. needs on mission as they put the kingdom

  1269. and God's righteousness first. Here's

1270. what he says next though uh in chapter

  1271. 22:36.

1272. He said to them, "But now let the one

  1273. well I'll read 35 first even though I

1274. don't throw it up." And he said to them,

1275. "When I sent you out with no money bag

1276. or knapsack or sandals, did you lack

1277. anything?" They said, "Nothing." So they

1278. they're learning their lesson that God

1279. provides for people who are on mission.

1280. He said to them, "But now let the one

1281. who has a moneybag take it, and likewise

1282. a knapsack, and let the one who has nor

1283. a sword sell his cloak and buy one. For

1284. I tell you that this scripture must be

1285. fulfilled in me." He was numbered with

1286. the transgressors, for it is written

1287. about me. Uh for it is written about me

1288. has its fulfillment. And they said,

1289. "Look, Lord, here are two swords." And

1290. he said to them, "It is enough." And

1291. what are swords used for? you know, um,

1292. unlike the unfortunate two goody two

1293. shoes Christian movies that, uh, refuse

1294. to show any violence, even though the

1295. Bible has a lot of violence in it, it's

1296. not like having a sword stuck on between

1297. your arm, right? Swords kill. Not that

1298. much different than guns. The the the

1299. you can use a sword to defend. So, there

1300. is a defensive mechanism with a sword,

1301. but it's really an offensive weapon. The

1302. shield is the defensive weapon. And so,

1303. you're using that sword sword to slash.

1304. If you used a sword today against just

1305. some random person who didn't attack

1306. you, uh it would be like at least um I

1307. don't know the exact law, but it's like

1308. the intent to murder uh and with a

1309. deadly weapon. So serious crime,

1310. serious crime. So it is a lethal weapon.

1311. And he says two is enough. You know, you

1312. might be able to draw conclusions from

1313. that. It's like don't just keep buying

  1314. AR-15s. It's a waste of money. Some of

1315. you might disagree with that regarding,

1316. you know, constitutional thoughts about

1317. militia, but that's not really what I'm

1318. saying. What I'm saying is he gave them

1319. provision to have a protective weapon.

1320. Uh that I would say that in general,

  1321. Christians should, unless they're

1322. soldiers, and I believe that Christians

1323. can be called to be soldiers, you can go

1324. to uh I think it's in the beginning of

1325. John where soldiers come to the um not

1326. the writer of John, but John the Baptist

1327. and ask him what to do. And he doesn't

1328. tell them to repent of being soldiers.

1329. He tells them to repent of taking more

1330. than is necessary in the taxes. Okay?

1331. That's what we need to tell the IRS,

  1332. too.

1333. So, I wouldn't tell them to repent of

1334. being the IRS. I think taxes are

  1335. necessary. They're important. Uh I'm not

1336. anti- taxes altogether. Neither was

  1337. Jesus. I don't like how much we're

1338. taxed. I have serious thoughts about

1339. that. But the point is that I believe

1340. self-defense by this passage even alone

1341. is justified by Jesus himself. However,

1342. and this might have been a burning

1343. question for some of you in your minds,

1344. what vengeance? Thought we weren't

1345. allowed to take vengeance. Here's uh

1346. Romans 12:9 says this, "Beloved, never

    Romans 12:9

1347. avenge yourselves, but leave it to the

1348. wrath of God. For it is written,

1349. vengeance, vengeance is mine. I will

  1350. repay, says the Lord."

1351. God the the we can all agree vengeance

1352. belongs to the Lord and he will avenge.

1353. He will not leave any guilt unpunished.

1354. However, there was a unique situation

1355. where uh God was the God over Israel and

1356. even though they're kind of dispersed

1357. through the nation of uh Media and

1358. Persia, um they're still his one nation

1359. and he will use his nation Israel to

1360. enact his vengeance. At times he would

1361. call them to go uh fulfill his judgment

1362. in destroying a particular people group.

  1363. And here's the interesting thing. He's

1364. already commanded them to wipe the

1365. Amalachites off the face of the earth.

  1366. Right? Ag's a descendant of he's an

1367. Amalachite and Agite. And so therefore,

1368. uh, Hmon is called an Agitite. And so

1369. the people, the Agites were so wicked

1370. and so evil that God said, "Wipe them

1371. off the face of the earth." So he's

1372. already commanded that they do it.

  1373. That's the kind of vengeance they're

1374. engaging in. It's not vigilante

1375. vengeance. However, the church is not

  1376. it's it's considered a new nation by

1377. God, but it's not an earthly nation the

1378. way it will be when Jesus establishes

1379. his kingdom on earth fully. And finally,

1380. it is a church really, a gathering of

1381. Christians. And so we don't have the

1382. same kind of governmental authority or

  1383. power um that a nation that's a

1384. theocracy would have. And there's

1385. nowhere in the New Testament that says

1386. that Christians should go and enact

1387. God's vengeance in this way. That's just

1388. war is a different concept. Not a topic

1389. for today because I'll just get too far

1390. a field doing that. But my point is that

  1391. I don't see a provision in the New

  1392. Testament where Christians can

1393. individually take vengeance and still be

1394. in service of the Lord. Okay. I also

1395. believe that what the Jews were doing

1396. were just in fulfillment. was already in

1397. a fulfillment that they knew about of a

1398. command that God given had given a long

  1399. time ago.

1400. And so, yeah, I believe we're able to

  1401. self-defend. I'll just take a very short

1402. time on this. I've already asked John

1403. Egg, our resident sheriff here, um, uh,

1404. if it'd be okay to tell you guys this.

1405. If you have questions about

  1406. self-defense, he's a great guy to talk

1407. about. I just want to tell you

1408. something, and I I ran this by him, too,

1409. to make sure I was really understanding

  1410. it correctly. Um, Oregon's self-defense

1411. laws are not terrible. They're not great

1412. either. Texas and Florida self-defense

1413. laws are far greater. And there's just

1414. one thing I want to tell you um that may

1415. may like uh increase your interest to

1416. know your laws around this because if

1417. you agree with me that we are allowed as

  1418. Christians in certain circumstances

1419. legally to defend ourselves with lethal

1420. force and that even God's okay with that

1421. and even makes provision for it through

1422. Jesus Christ. Again, sword is analogous

1423. to guns in my mind. It's a lethal

  1424. weapon. It's just a technology

1425. difference. So there, however, we're

1426. also to obey the laws of the land. And

1427. so unless the laws of the land are

1428. inherently sinful, uh, which someone

1429. might say, well, the lack of

1430. self-defense um, laws that are codified

1431. in language in the Oregon legislature is

1432. sinful in my mind. Um, I'm not sure that

  1433. it is, but they're they're relatively

1434. weak in Oregon, but they're still there.

1435. So, I don't know if you've heard of the

1436. castle doctrine. I'm assuming multiple

1437. of you know better what it is, but it's

1438. basically a stand your ground law where

1439. you do not have to retreat. You can

1440. defend your land. You can defend

1441. wherever you're standing. As long as

  1442. where you're standing, you're legally

1443. allowed to be standing. You can defend

1444. that with lethal force. And in Texas,

1445. and I'm not saying you have to agree

1446. with these things. I'm just letting you

1447. know the difference here. Because if you

1448. didn't know what I'm about to tell you

1449. about organ self-defense laws, you could

1450. get yourself in terrible legal trouble

1451. doing something you thought was okay and

1452. right. In Texas, if somebody breaks and

1453. enters your home and steals something,

1454. you can use not only lethal force to

1455. stop them, you can run them down and

1456. kill them to get it back. It's a law in

1457. Texas. That's not true in Oregon. Um,

1458. somebody has to be breaking and entering

1459. with the intent to commit a crime. In

1460. Texas, the breaking and entering is the

1461. intent to commit a crime. So, they have

1462. to be breaking and entering with the

1463. intent to commit a crime. and you need

1464. to feel in eminent danger for your life.

1465. Okay? And you can say that all you want,

1466. but if you've got no evidence, you're

1467. not as protected by Oregon self-defense

1468. laws. So, and I've gotten this from

1469. multiple what I think are authoritative

1470. uh uh site um excuse me, authoritative

  1471. um

  1472. what's the word I'm looking for?

1473. >> Citations. Yeah, sources. There we go.

1474. Um citations and sources both in writing

1475. and in people interpreting them. You

1476. can't just shoot someone in organ in the

1477. back as they're fleeing. Even if they at

1478. one point made you feel or your family

1479. feel in in danger for your life, if you

1480. shoot them in the back, you may not have

1481. a case and you might be the one that

1482. goes to prison. Um, so that's not the

1483. case in in Oregon. I I know you guys

1484. usually want to know my opinions on

1485. these things and I don't like to leave

1486. anything uh hidden on purpose. So, I

1487. personally don't think it's good that if

1488. someone breaks and enters and all they

1489. have to do is turn their back to you and

1490. now you can't defend yourself. How do

1491. you know they're not just running to get

1492. an angle on you and running away and and

1493. how do you know that they're actually

1494. that your family is actually safe? So,

1495. to me, if you have broken into my house

1496. at night, uh you forfeited your life

1497. because I'm going to protect my family.

1498. And I'll stand before Jesus saying,

1499. "Look, you said we can have a sword. I

1500. took that as very simply having lethal

  1501. weapons and defending ourselves.

1502. However, in Oregon, I'm not going to

1503. shoot someone in the back. I'm not going

1504. to do that because I don't want to lose

1505. my freedom and then not even be able to

1506. uh parent my kids and and be a husband

1507. to my wife. So, I think you need to know

1508. your laws and I think you need to obey

1509. those laws or suffer the consequences of

1510. uh the legal protections that you lack

1511. in that way. Okay. Sermon is not really

  1512. about self-defense. I just thought that

1513. would be valuable to know. Uh I think

1514. it's worldview building out to

1515. understand what scripture really says

1516. about these things. And again, if your

1517. convictions are different than mine,

1518. that's okay. I just wanted to show you

1519. what uh the elders at Boon Fairy teach.

1520. Back to the story. Um because I'll

1521. remind you of the main point. When

1522. leaders are passionate about protecting

1523. others from evil, God helps them. And

1524. we're seeing just how much God helps

1525. them in this case. Um but he doesn't

1526. help them the way he sometimes helps

1527. others. when the famous story of the

1528. Egyptians coming after they had uh

1529. finally relented and let the people go

1530. after the plague of the firstborn where

1531. the firstborn of Pharaoh and all the

1532. other firstborns of uh Egypt died, you

1533. know, the uh destroyer. It seems like

1534. either an angel or some kind of spirit

1535. that God sent to kill these children and

1536. as a punishment on Egypt for their

  1537. unbelievably oppressive enslavement of

1538. Israel in Egypt and for no good reason

1539. too. like like gen infanticide kind of

1540. oppress oppression. Um they're leaving

1541. and the God leads them directly to the

1542. shore of the Red Sea. He told them not

1543. to go around it. And then uh the

1544. Egyptians, the world power at the time

1545. was barreling down on them with their

1546. chariots. And uh God puts a barrier in

1547. between them and then opens the Red Sea

1548. and has them walk on dry ground and

1549. swallows up the chariots after they come

  1550. chasing behind. That's a supernatural

1551. way to protect the people. Unre

1552. repeatable unless God wanted to. But it

1553. it breaks all the laws of physics and

1554. science. God is doing a miracle and we

1555. believe that that actually was a miracle

1556. not explainable by science. Something

1557. that only God can do. Suspends the laws

1558. of gravity and of physics and just does

1559. whatever he wants. In this case, he's

1560. working through human institution and

  1561. law.

  1562. I don't see anything happening here

1563. that's like explicitly supernatural. an

1564. edict was given that's not revocable.

1565. Another edict given is not revocable

1566. that allows for the the Jews to protect

1567. themselves and is maybe it wasn't a full

1568. nine months because it takes a while

1569. even for these fast horses to get there.

1570. But they had months to come up with a

1571. defensive plan, you know. So sometimes

1572. God works in a supernatural way to help

1573. us in serving others by protecting them

1574. from evil. Sometimes he works through

1575. human institution and there isn't any

  1576. absolutely explicitly supernatural

1577. evidence of him doing it. He just has

1578. his purposes and he does it in different

1579. ways. Both are him helping

1580. providentially though. So they neither

1581. of those would come without God. The

1582. supernatural or even the human favor

1583. they had with the king. What I mean what

1584. are the odds? I I didn't do my research

1585. on this one, but I wouldn't be surprised

1586. if Esther was one of the first kings or

1587. first queens and and Morai was the maybe

1588. the only Jew ever to write an

1589. irrevocable law in Persia. You know,

1590. maybe Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  1591. and Daniel did. I don't know. But it's a

1592. rare thing for a queen to have the

1593. amount of authority that she has and for

1594. a Jewish person in a foreign land to be

1595. the second in command. That's all God's

1596. favor. But none of it's necessarily

  1597. supernatural. It's providential. God

1598. just moving the chest pieces around the

1599. way he wants to. And so I say that

1600. because um we already know that God

1601. sometimes will do supernatural things to

1602. help us. And other times he will work in

  1603. non-supnatural ways, but he's still

1604. helping us. So just because God doesn't

1605. change the laws of physics for you

  1606. doesn't mean he's not helping you.

  1607. That's my only point there. He's

1608. definitely still helping. Like it wasn't

1609. necessarily supernatural that we got

1610. $10,000. All those things can be

1611. explained. Um, but it's still God doing

1612. it. I know it's him. Especially just as

1613. a little calling card of the exact right

1614. timing, you know. So, let's continue

1615. here. Um, because we still have one more

1616. point or part of the sermon main point

1617. to prove, and that is that when leaders

1618. are passionate about protecting others

1619. from evil, God helps them and the people

1620. rejoice. Let's listen to what happens

1621. here and then we'll be done. Um, I've

  1622. lost my spot.

1623. Yeah. Did we already read verse nine?

1624. >> Yeah. Okay, I'll go to 10. And he wrote

1625. in the name of King Aasso and sealed it

1626. with the king's signate ring and sent

1627. the letters by mounted couriers riding

1628. on swift horses that were used in the

1629. king's service bred uh bred from the

1630. royal stud saying that the king allowed

1631. Jews who were in every city to gather

1632. and defend their lives to destroy to

1633. kill and annihilate any armed force of

1634. any people or province that might attack

1635. them, children and women included, and

1636. to plunder their goods. one uh on one

1637. day throughout all the provinces of King

1638. Asaweras on the 13th day of the 12th

1639. month, which is the month of Adar, a

1640. copy of what was written was to be

1641. issued as a decree in every province,

1642. being publicly displayed to all peoples,

1643. and the Jews were to be ready on that

1644. day to take vengeance on their enemies.

  1645. Again, self-protective, defensive

1646. against people attacking them with

1647. weapons. That's what the law says.

1648. That's what was allowed. Um still

1649. considered vengeance. So the couriers

1650. mounted on their swift horses that were

1651. used in the king's service rode out

1652. hurriedly urged by the king's command

1653. and the decree was issued in Susa the

1654. citadel. Then Mori went out from the

1655. presence of the king in the royal robes

1656. of blue and white and with a great

1657. golden crown and a robe of fine linen

1658. and purple and the city of Susa shouted

  1659. and rejoiced.

  1660. shouted and rejoiced.

1661. The city, it doesn't say just Jews, it

1662. says the city. Later on in all the

1663. provinces, it mentions specifically how

1664. Jews were rejoicing. But here it says

1665. the city. He went from mourning in

1666. sackcloth and ashes to wearing clothes

1667. just like the king. That's God. You got

1668. to see it. That's so God. And the decree

1669. was issued in Susa, the citadel, excuse

1670. me. Um, and the city of Susa shouted and

  1671. rejoiced. Let's go to Proverbs 29:2.

    Proverbs 29:2

1672. And just for time sake, I'll have it on

  1673. the screen only.

1674. When the righteous increase, the people

1675. rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the

1676. people groan. You're seeing that in our

  1677. nation right now.

1678. I'm going to use an example that can be

1679. controversial in the world. It ought not

1680. to be controversial in um in Christian

1681. circles, just like 1 plus 1 equals two.

1682. And so, someone's like freaking out

1683. about you saying that. I don't agree

  1684. that it's controversial to say there's

1685. only two genders. That's that was

1686. normative in America. It's exactly what

1687. God created. Um, what we've lost in

1688. great part is not only um clarity around

1689. biology, but also clarity around

1690. spirituality. We're made in the image of

1691. God, male and female, he made us. So,

1692. it's not just a physical thing. Cuz can

1693. you see the image of God in somebody? I

1694. can't see it. Can you test? I know it's

1695. there, but I see it by faith. Can you

1696. test with scientific instruments where

1697. the image of God is? No. It's not

1698. something that can be seen or handled or

1699. measured in that way. So it's a

1700. spiritual thing that God made in us. And

1701. if you die as a woman, you'll be

1702. resurrect. If you believe in Jesus

  1703. Christ, you'll be resurrected as a

1704. woman. And that without even a body

1705. until the resurrection. So you are

1706. spiritually female and spiritually male.

1707. And there is nothing medicine can do to

1708. change that. This is also unbelievably

1709. important in terms of relationship to

1710. God. And there is so much confusion.

1711. It's the exact same thing in Esther 3:15

    Esther 3:15

1712. when the first edict, the evil immoral

1713. edict went out, the couriers went outly

1714. by the order of the king and the decree

1715. was issued in Susa the citadel to

1716. annihilate all the Jews, men, women, and

1717. children. And the king and Hmon sat down

1718. to drink, but the city of Susa was

  1719. thrown into confusion.

1720. If I had told you 20 years ago, let's

1721. say there was already a pastor here,

1722. that around 2000 uh teens, middle teens,

  1723. uh a decent amount of people, I don't

1724. know what the percentages, but a large

1725. enough uh percentage of people that even

1726. some of your neighbors will end up

1727. believing that a man can get pregnant

1728. and have a baby. You'd be like, "No way.

1729. No way. You wouldn't believe it." And

1730. now it's happening. That is confusion.

1731. Unbelievable confusion. And since we

1732. know that it's controversial and people

1733. over unfriend you for saying the right

1734. thing, it takes some significant passion

1735. to be protective in serving others in

1736. this and telling them that's not the

1737. way. It's not the way. It'll destroy

1738. your relationship to the Lord. It's

1739. going to destroy your body. You're going

1740. to regret deeply someday. And we're

1741. already seeing that. We're already

1742. seeing that. On top of it, the people in

1743. America that support this, which I

1744. consider like genuinely evil, wicked,

1745. just like Hmon, uh, destructive and

1746. enemies of the Lord and enemies of his

1747. people, uh, those people make it sound

1748. like this is just a global norm. It's

1749. not even true in Europe. People in

1750. Europe don't even agree with some of the

1751. wacko things Americans say about having

1752. children before puberty, right? So all

1753. of a sudden, America is like

1754. significantly less godly than Europe,

1755. right? I lived in Germany. I knew how

1756. ungodly Europe was. So man, now think of

1757. are you willing to put your reputation

1758. and relationships at risk for lovingly

1759. speaking the truth around these things?

1760. No. This is not uh going to solve

1761. anything for you, right? And you do have

1762. to be protective. We have people in this

1763. church that have gone to doctor's

1764. offices with their teenage daughters and

1765. they tried to separate their teenage

1766. daughter from the mother. Why? Cuz

1767. Satan. That's why. To tell them to get

1768. procedures done. And what's your

1769. identity? The same thing's happening

1770. sometimes in public schools. And then

1771. they're intentionally hiding it from

1772. parents. So there's all kinds of dangers

1773. that we do need to protect our children

1774. from around any corner. And is that

1775. something you want to be apathetic

1776. about? No, I don't think so. Why do I

1777. say this? Well, because uh there's

1778. terrible confusion. And when uh you

1779. know, people say, "Well, we can't

1780. legislate morality." That's the opposite

1781. of that is true. It's impossible not to

1782. legislate morality. Did you know that

  1783. there's not a single law that doesn't

1784. come from some moral code somewhere down

1785. the line? What we can't do is cause

1786. transformation with laws. Not even God's

1787. law was intended to create

1788. transformation. rather his grace. I hope

1789. that was hammered into you through uh

1790. the study of Galatians. If if you want

1791. to learn more about that, we have the

1792. whole study of Galatians online. But

1793. it's grace that transforms us. Um the

1794. law points us to our sin, but the law

1795. does have a chaperoning effect, right?

1796. What's going to eventually happen if

1797. we're able to uh overcome the confusion

1798. and the righteous increase is that even

1799. America on mass will look back and can

  1800. you believe the 2020s

1801. and that they had men competing with

1802. women for state championships and track.

1803. Can you believe that happened? How is

1804. that even possible? Children would be

1805. like, "How what?" Right? We'll have

1806. missionaries or reporters go to African

1807. nations talking to the men in a tribe,

1808. you know, we're in like loin claws, rel

1809. relatively primitive culture still and

1810. and tell them, "Hey, um, did you know

1811. that Americans believe that uh there are

1812. more than two genders and that men get

1813. pregnant and they just bust out laughing

1814. like it's the craziest thing ever,

1815. right? And I'm not saying that, you

1816. know, subsaharan Africa doesn't have his

1817. moral issues. It does. I'm just saying

1818. um America is in terrible confusion

1819. because wicked laws, wicked ideas and

1820. wicked ideologies have been winning for

1821. a time and hopefully that's on decline

1822. and the opposite is becoming true. But

1823. are you willing to be protective about

1824. things even like that? You know you'll

1825. be hated for it. So you have to put your

1826. line, your reputation and the love of

1827. man and the people pleaser in you to

1828. death before you're willing to do it.

  1829. And I believe if you don't, you're not

1830. really serving the Lord in protecting

1831. people from these kinds of demonic

  1832. doctrines.

  1833. Uh, you know,

1834. verbalized by his by his earthly

  1835. servants.

1836. But did you see the people rejoice?

1837. That's one of the rewards for the person

1838. who's passionate about serving God and

1839. protecting others is that they get to

1840. see the people rejoice when God helps

1841. them actually protect somebody. Right?

1842. You'll have people that come to you.

1843. You're the only one that told me, "Don't

1844. go in that direction." Don't do that.

1845. Don't stop coming to church. Don't stop

1846. studying your word. God is good. Work it

1847. out. Don't let a wedge be between you

1848. and him. So, I want to just say this in

1849. conclusion. Um, so, and this is not my

1850. idea. Someone said this in our uh DC. um

1851. they they were looking at this as a

1852. student of the Bible with great interest

1853. and and powerful perception and they

1854. said you know it's kind of interesting

1855. there's a parallel there was the first

1856. edict it was irrevocable and it's kind

1857. of parallel to God's law it's the edict

1858. that if you sin you have to die and it's

1859. irrevocable and then there was the

1860. second edict that says we can be

1861. defended against that law as Jews well

1862. there's also kind of a second edict in

1863. the in the uh New Testament where faith

1864. in Jesus Christ protects us from the

1865. first one. You know, there are

1866. definitely also differences like they're

1867. not the two the the the the covenant of

1868. of the law. You were always only made

1869. righteous by faith, too. Um but it the

1870. the law was in concert with the New

1871. Testament. They were not uh opposed to

1872. one another the way these two edicts

1873. were. You know, someone would have to

1874. decide which edict they would follow and

1875. those that wanted to hurt the Jews

1876. wouldn't go with the spirit of the law.

1877. Obviously the king in in in rubber

1878. stamping one of these types of edicts uh

1879. they can recognize yeah he doesn't want

1880. them to be killed because he's saying

1881. they can be defended now and Esther his

1882. queen is Jewish so of course he's not

1883. wanting to kill them but the law can't

1884. be revoked so people could still stand

1885. on the law and say no we have to do this

1886. and it's like that in our lives as well

1887. sometimes we want to stand on the law

1888. and say we're good enough and we can do

1889. this and then we make God to be an enemy

1890. um and we're hostile and alienated from

1891. him and so What the new covenant is

1892. about is not about contradicting the

1893. law, but it's about saying, look, the

1894. law proves that you're sinful and that

1895. you can never make atonement for

1896. yourself. And the New Testament proves

1897. that only Jesus Christ can make

1898. atonement for your sin. And once you

1899. understand that, you realize the whole

1900. Old Testament was about that as well.

1901. So, as you come to communion today, and

1902. we'll be doing corporate communion, that

1903. means gather your items or your

1904. elements, uh, the bread and the wine or

1905. juice, and then bring them back to your,

1906. uh, seat, and then I'll be back up to

1907. lead us, uh, communally. But think about

1908. what part of that main point does God

1909. want you to apply? When leaders are

1910. passionate about protecting others from

1911. evil, God helps them and the people

1912. rejoice. Are you at a place where you've

1913. been helped and protected, but you're

1914. not rejoicing? If you need the power to

1915. rejoice, um, here's what Psalm 118 says.

1916. Remember how we said that everything we

1917. need for life and godliness is God's

1918. word. So, I'm not rejoicing the way I

  1919. should be. What's the solution? God's

1920. word every time. Right? Verse uh Psalm

    Psalms 118:21–24

  1921. 118:21-24

1922. says this. I thank you that you have

1923. answered me and have become my

1924. salvation. The stone that the builders

1925. rejected had become the cornerstone. You

1926. know that's about Jesus. This is the

1927. Lord's doing and is marvelous in our

1928. eyes. This is the day that the Lord has

1929. made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

1930. You know what would encourage me so much

1931. is if when our worship team comes up

1932. again, and I'm inviting them even now as

1933. I'm about to pray to come up. If we

1934. would worship with that kind of a

  1935. rejoicing heart.

1936. Many of us aren't even aware of how much

1937. God has protected us. Because when the

  1938. bad thing doesn't happen, you didn't

1939. really know you're being protected of

  1940. it.

1941. But we're protected by God all the time.

1942. We're given victories all the time. You

1943. going to communion today and repenting

1944. of a sin of maybe being apathetic about

1945. serving the Lord. That is a victory and

1946. you can rejoice in that. That is how

1947. good God is. Let me pray. Heavenly

1948. Father, thank you for filling us with

1949. passion to serve you in a desire to

1950. protect others. Thank you that you help

1951. us in that and thank you uh that you

1952. lead people's hearts to rejoice in that

1953. service to you and that result. We pray

1954. that we would now rejoice in worshiping

1955. you in spirit and truth in Jesus name.

  1956. Amen.
