  1. getting into the material. Let's pray.

  2. Father, thank you for the opportunity to

  3. tackle a whole chapter in your word in

  4. Esther and such a climactic one. There's

  5. lots to learn here about your character

  6. and how you give us victory. I pray that

  7. you would fill us all with your spirit,

  8. including me, and that you'd open our

  9. hearts to your word and your word to our

  10. hearts in such a way that we not only

  11. understand it, but also have the desire

  12. and the power to apply it in our lives

  13. uh to grow, to become more like your

  14. son. We pray these things in Jesus name.

  15. Amen. I can't remember whether I've ever

  16. told this story, but I was thinking

  17. about the closest I've been to combat.

  18. Uh because there's warfare and combat

  19. happening in this passage. And the

  20. closest I've really ever been to combat

  21. is combat sports like wrestling or

  22. football. I consider both of those

  23. basically combat sports, especially

  24. wrestling. It's a form of martial art.

  25. And my senior year, I was heading into

  26. the state championship. Um, but so once

  27. once districts are over and if you don't

  28. make it to the state champ uh state

  29. tournament, which at that time was in

  30. the memorial coliseum, I don't know

  31. where it's now. Um, your season's over,

  32. your wrestling season's over. And so all

  33. the other wrestlers were gone um and

  34. done. And I didn't have any other

  35. heavyweights to I was about 255 in high

  36. school. So heavyweight was between 215

  37. and 275. And so it wasn't on the

  38. heaviest side or not the lightest side

  39. either. and there was no heavyweights to

  40. wrestle, which is a huge problem in

  41. preparing for um the state tournament

  42. because I've got no one to practice with

  43. that's even of a similar size and

  44. weight. And in during the during the

  45. regular season, uh our coach would

  46. shuttle me to other schools like

  47. Westland and Lake Asiggo High School

  48. where I went didn't have a very big

  49. wrestling program, but other schools

  50. nearby did. And he would take me over

  51. there to wrestle with their varsity uh

  52. other varsity heavyweights, but they

  53. didn't want to wrestle to prepare for

  54. the state championship, which makes

  55. total sense. So, I had no one to

  56. wrestle. And so, my uh coach came up

  57. with a plan. Total surprise to me and a

  58. real gift to me. You might not know this

  59. name uh unless you're into combat sports

  60. and mixed martial arts. Uh but he took

  61. me all the way out uh to Gresham uh to

  62. what seemed like a warehouse, but it had

  63. a whole bunch of mats out and um and he

  64. took me in the middle of the mat and

  65. then brought a guy out to shake hands

  66. with and I immediately recognized him.

  67. His name is Randy Coutur. I don't know

  68. if you know who Randy Coutur is, but

  69. Randy Coutur is a six-time UFC champion.

  70. Um and that's mixed martial arts

  71. fighting. I think they back then they

  72. still use like really gloves, but the

  73. gloves were to protect your knuckles,

  74. not the other person's face. And so this

  75. guy's just he was the champion at the

  76. time, I think. And uh just a really big

  77. deal I couldn't believe who I was

  78. shaking hands with. Um and so we stood

  79. there and uh his daughter came over and

  80. he gave her a hug and I was just

  81. surprised by how gentle and kind he was

  82. until we until we started wrestling. But

  83. before that, he's just he's a you I

  84. don't know if when you meet someone, you

  85. look at their eyes and the way they

  86. shake your hand, the way he hugged his

  87. daughter, you could just tell he was he

  88. was gentle. And not every mixed martial

  89. arts guy or football player that I've

  90. ever met is gentle like that, but it

  91. just it made an impression on me. And

  92. then he taught me a move, which

  93. technically isn't legal in wrestling. He

  94. was also a wrestling champion. multiple

  95. not Olympic but multiple uh gold medals

  96. and silver and bronze medals and major

  97. wrestling tournaments across the world.

  98. Um but if you know what a double leg is,

  99. a single leg is when you shoot down and

  100. try to grab one leg, pick them up, trip

  101. the other leg and bring them down. It's

  102. a takedown. It's two points in in

  103. collegiate wrestling. Uh a double leg is

  104. where you do that with both legs and you

  105. have to cup the back back of the legs.

  106. And what you're supposed to do is you

  107. put your head on the side and then pick

  108. them up and drive them to the ground.

  109. What he said is just don't put your head

  110. to the side and put it right here in

  111. their sternum. You're a great football

  112. player. You just told me that you're

  113. nowhere near as good of a wrestler as

  114. you are a football player and that

  115. you're struggling to take these heavy

  116. weights down. So just the first thing

  117. you do is you fake a a shot. So now

  118. they're kind of almost sprawling back

  119. and then they're going to stand back up.

  120. And as you stand back up um like a like

  121. a Goldberg spear. I don't know if you

  122. know what Goldberg is either. He's like,

  123. "Yeah, exactly like a Goldberg spear."

  124. and I actually did it once in the in the

  125. state wrestling tournament and it

  126. worked. Um, but what I'm really wanting

  127. to tell that's a fun story to tell you

  128. about. What I'm really want to tell you

  129. about is coming back to that gentle and

  130. kind spirit that I noticed from him

  131. because if you watch his UFC fights

  132. before the fight he's like that, during

  133. the fight he's not like that and then

  134. after the fight he's like that again. If

  135. you got to know Randy Couture and had no

  136. idea about his mixed martial arts um

  137. prowess and maybe just had a barbecue

  138. with him, you just think, "Wow, that is

  139. a really gentle I mean, he's built,

  140. strong looking, tough guy." Maybe you'd

  141. think he was in the military or

  142. something, but you just think, "Wow,

  143. that's an unusually gentle guy for how

  144. hulking he is." And then and then if you

  145. didn't see his UFC fights, that would be

  146. an impression of what his character is

  147. like. And yet in in the ring, he can be

  148. unbelievably violent. I think 10 or 11

  149. of his fights ended by knockout,

  150. multiple by submission. Submission is

  151. when you do something to someone that's

  152. so painful that they tap out. And these

  153. are the toughest guys on earth. I mean,

  154. some of the toughest guys on earth

  155. tapping out. Um well, I want to relate

  156. that to Jesus in this sermon because

  157. Jesus is also unbelievably gentle and

  158. kind and merciful. And uh sometimes we

  159. can pres get presented only with that

  160. side of Christ's character rather than

  161. the warrior combat side of Jesus. Um and

  162. the reason why I want to show you that

  163. is that I'm going to make this isn't the

  164. main point, but I'll be making a point

  165. today that Esther is acting in a

  166. Christlike manner and yet what she is

  167. requesting of the king is about as

  168. violent as it gets. And you can recoil

  169. from that violence. remember I think all

  170. of us having gone through this uh study

  171. in Esther have been impressed with her

  172. character like what a heroine I've been

  173. impressed I'll after this study I'm

  174. never going to forget how much I look up

  175. to Queen Esther and in so many ways want

  176. to be like her and to be like Morai and

  177. so today you're faced with something

  178. where this queen requests something that

  179. then is done that is unbelievably

  180. violent and you have to decide well was

  181. it wrong of her to do that? Was it

  182. right? If it was right, why? Because you

  183. have a character uh that's that's meek

  184. and gentle, but fierce when it comes

  185. defending her people from the enemy. And

  186. I'm going to be arguing for the fact

  187. that Esther is acting in a Christlike

  188. manner here. And so I'll be showing you

  189. a lot about that. And uh you do not want

  190. Jesus to not be a warrior. Uh the

  191. reality is that we do need to be

  192. defended uh from the enemy. And when I

  193. say the enemy, I mean the person who we

  194. know is Satan. I also believe our flesh

  195. could be considered the enemy. Uh

  196. scripture also talks about death being

  197. uh an enemy. And believe it or not,

  198. scripture talks about everyone before

  199. they were saved being an enemy towards

  200. the Lord. And so we're going to look at

  201. the kind of victory that Christ has for

  202. us. Uh and how if we only think of him

  203. as as meek and mild, uh meek does not

  204. mean weak. Meek means power under

  205. control. And Jesus has all the power. So

  206. it's a lot of control he has when he's

  207. being meek. But the Jesus that's too

  208. often presented in the church as just

  209. mild, uh just kind, just gentle, um just

  210. relational and and so loving. That's all

  211. true. But if that's all you know about

  212. him and you're starting to reject the

  213. other revelation of his character in

  214. scripture, it's not really the same

  215. Jesus anymore. Just like it wouldn't be

  216. the same Randy Coutur to know only his

  217. gentleness but not his warrior side or

  218. only his warrior side and not his

  219. gentleness. It seemed to me from that

  220. one encounter his daughter knew only his

  221. gentle side. And so in the same way uh

  222. we ought to have a full picture of who

  223. Jesus Christ is. And that allow us to

  224. help us to see um that uh there there

  225. are times um when uh it's righteous to

  226. defend yourself. And ultimately what

  227. Jesus did to defend us from God and his

  228. wrath is the the biggest victory that

  229. he's given us. And it took a warrior to

  230. do what he did as well. So if you walk

  231. away with anything today, if you're

  232. thinking, you know what? What is it that

  233. God wants me to learn? There may be

  234. other things as well. There usually is,

  235. but you're going to see just exactly

  236. from this passage how the main point

  237. really is celebrating the victory of the

  238. Lord. The celebrating the victory the

  239. Lord gives us is part of our worship.

  240. Celebrating the victory the Lord gives

  241. us is part of our worship. that means

  242. his character um as a warrior to give

  243. that kind of victory uh is part of our

  244. worship as well and it should be part of

  245. your worship. So we're going to be going

  246. all over scripture today. I'm going to

  247. be fing focusing most on the scriptures

  248. outside of Esther in the New Testament

  249. because uh the Old Testament a lot you

  250. you'll hear a lot of people that aren't

  251. Christians who's like oh the God of the

  252. Old Testament is so violent but the God

  253. of the New Testament is so kind. Um, it

  254. is true that the God of the Old

  255. Testament uh is violent against enemies

  256. and against unrepentant sin. What's not

  257. true is the God that of the New

  258. Testament isn't. I'll be showing you

  259. that. Um, and it's not really a matter

  260. of interpretation when you just read the

  261. words at their face value. It's very

  262. obvious. So, I hope that you're

  263. convinced as well. So, celebrating the

  264. victory of the Lord, celebrating the

  265. victory the Lord gives us is part of our

  266. worship. Let's get into it. This is

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  267. chapter 9 and uh it's it's the climax.

  268. The day that uh people were allowed to

  269. go and just fight against the Jews has

  270. come. But the uh the king that we'd know

  271. as Xerxes in in the Bible has also

  272. decreed since he can't get rid of that

  273. first one. The laws of the Mes and the

  274. Persians is irrevocable. But he uh has

  275. Morai write another law that says that

  276. the Jews are allowed to defend

  277. themselves against any armed force that

  278. might attack them. Against any armed

  279. force that might attack them. So that's

  280. what you need to know to go into this in

  281. terms of summary. Chapter 9:1. Now in

  282. the 12th month, which is the month of

  283. Adar, on the 13th day of the same time,

  284. when the king's command and edict were

  285. about to be carried out, on the very day

  286. when the enemies of the Jews hoped to

  287. gain mastery over them, the reverse

  288. occurred. The Jews gained mastery over

  289. those who hated them. One of the points

  290. I'm going to be making later is that the

  291. real battle that is revealed to us in

  292. scripture is the battle between our

  293. fleshly nature, our sinful disposition,

  294. and the spirit of God. And so those are

  295. opposed to each other. We learned about

  296. that in Galatians. And those

  297. the fleshly attitudes and hearts

  298. dispositions are what caused this battle

  299. as well. Uh it was Hmon's hatred for

  300. Mori, his desire to be worshiped by Mori

  301. himself. uh his uh malcontented attitude

  302. and how even though God had given him so

  303. many things and advanced him uh beyond

  304. really any of his peers, he seems to

  305. have been second in command and then

  306. ultimately Morai replaced him. All of

  307. those uh bad attitudes and sinful

  308. attitudes and even his plan to have the

  309. Jews annihilated, they all come from a

  310. sinful disposition inside. That's where

  311. the evil starts. That's where the sin

  312. starts. And so for Hmon, that wasn't

  313. defeated. And for his sons, that wasn't

  314. defeated. They didn't surrender the

  315. flesh to the Lord. They didn't repent of

  316. that sin and have their flesh put to

  317. death in that way. And because of that,

  318. they carry out these evil acts.

  319. So when we talk about in the in in the

  320. New Testament, the New Covenant, and in

  321. the church today, the battle really

  322. being the battle of the flesh versus God

  323. versus the Holy Spirit, and whether

  324. you're going to relinquish it to him.

  325. We're not talking about something soft

  326. or kind of less than combat. Uh we're

  327. talking about the solution um that you

  328. know if everyone surrendered to the

  329. spirit rather than the flesh, there

  330. really wouldn't be war.

  331. That's not what the Bible reveals is

  332. going to happen. But that is true. If

  333. everyone actually relinquished their

  334. fleshly desires to the Holy Spirit and

  335. was filled with the Holy Spirit and came

  336. to faith and indwelt by the Holy Spirit

  337. and then continually filled by the

  338. spirit, there would not be war. There

  339. would just be peace. That is what the

  340. new heavens and earth is going to be

  341. like. Um so when it comes to the kind of

  342. combat with weapons in war, the problem

  343. is still ultimately the flesh. Um, and

  344. in this case there's sometimes in war I

  345. was listening to a podcast of a Canadian

  346. special forces guy and um I won't say

  347. that much about it but uh he said that

  348. towards the end of his special forces

  349. career um the mission started getting

  350. murky and then the the guy that was

  351. talking to him said what do you mean

  352. murky? And he said I just I wasn't sure

  353. whether what I was doing was right

  354. anymore. or I wasn't sure that it was

  355. wrong either, but I couldn't really put

  356. my whole self into it anymore because I

  357. wasn't sure whether it was right or

  358. wrong what we were actually doing. It

  359. became gray. Um, and before it was black

  360. and white, and so I could give myself

  361. the mission. Well, in this case, the the

  362. battle has an obvious protagonist and an

  363. obvious antagonist. And I want to show

  364. you that. Um, and that's that's really

  365. what what the author of Esther, who

  366. we're not sure who it was, may may have

  367. been Morai. He recorded some things uh

  368. that are even spoke about in Esther as

  369. him recording, but we don't know the

  370. author. But the author is making it very

  371. clear that one side of the battle is

  372. people who are unjustifiably for no good

  373. reason attacking and trying to kill

  374. people that have done nothing that

  375. deserves that. Okay? they haven't they

  376. haven't uh done the things that they're

  377. accused of that might cause people to

  378. justify killing them. Um and on the

  379. other side are the Jews who are just

  380. defending themselves and and so it is a

  381. relatively black and white kind of

  382. thing. Um and and I think that's

  383. important because uh in today's day and

  384. age there's all this swirling worldview

  385. conflict about Israel. We're going to

  386. talk about that a little bit, but there

  387. isn't really a whole lot of controversy

  388. here if you're really understanding the

  389. word correctly about who's in the right

  390. and who's in the wrong with God. And so

  391. it really is black and white. So the

  392. reverse occurred, it says in um I guess

  393. that's all still verse one, the Jews

  394. gained mastery over those who hated

  395. them. Verse two, the Jews gathered in

  396. the cities throughout all the provinces

  397. of King Ahasaweras to lay hands on those

  398. who sought them harm. We're only halfway

  399. through the verse, but we had a really

  400. interesting discussion in our Bible

  401. study about this. Um, if you go back to

  402. verse 11 of chapter 10, you get the

  403. details of the edict that the king made

  404. about the Jews being allowed to defend

  405. themselves. And it's a saying that the

  406. king allowed the Jews who were in every

  407. city to gather to defend their lives, to

  408. destroy, to kill, and to annihilate any

  409. armed force of any people or province

  410. that might attack them. children and

  411. women included, and to plunder their

  412. goods. I want to point out just a couple

  413. things. They were allowed to use lethal

  414. force against any people that was armed

  415. and might attack them. And that included

  416. children or women that was armed or

  417. might attack them. They're allowed to

  418. defend themselves. That's what the law

  419. actually says. And so again here in

  420. verse two, uh it's saying that they were

  421. um laying hands on those who sought

  422. their harm. Um one of the points I want

  423. to be making that I believe the author

  424. is making here is that the Jews didn't

  425. transgress this law in any way. In fact,

  426. they didn't even take full advantage of

  427. their right within the law. So they

  428. didn't even go close to beyond what was

  429. what was legal for them. And no one

  430. could stand against them. for fear of

  431. them had fallen on all peoples. And uh

  432. all peoples in this case means even the

  433. officials of the provinces. Verse three,

  434. all of the officials of the provinces

  435. and the satraps and the governors and

  436. the royal agents also helped the Jews

  437. for the fear of Mori had fallen on them.

  438. I didn't pick this up last sermon, but I

  439. want to go back to verse 17 because it

  440. relates to this of chapter 8. And it

  441. says at the end of verse 17, "And many

  442. from the peoples of the country declared

  443. themselves Jews for fear of the Jews had

  444. fallen on them." One thing that I wanted

  445. to say last week, but ran out of time on

  446. this is that um you you've heard that

  447. people are Christian in name only, like

  448. culturally Christian, but it's not

  449. actually uh a devotion for them. um used

  450. to be a more common term, but uh people

  451. will call themselves now born again

  452. Christians uh to signal that they're not

  453. Christians in name only. They're that

  454. this is really who they are and their

  455. identity. They've truly been saved. And

  456. while cultural Christianity is probably

  457. more predominant in the Bible belt than

  458. it is up here in Oregon, and you might

  459. not know as many cultural Christians or

  460. Christians in name only. I've been I've

  461. been watching sort of a trend where if

  462. the administration in the the White

  463. House uh has this worldview then that

  464. seems to be sort of the predominant

  465. conforming power for uh for American

  466. people who are not necessarily

  467. Christian. So it's like okay this is now

  468. the trend. So we're going to we're going

  469. to say these things and believe these

  470. things. And you see the companies uh

  471. major companies starting to follow suit.

  472. And if and then if the um uh the

  473. administration goes in the opposite

  474. direction, you watch how the culture

  475. starts shifting in that direction. And

  476. so I actually think that there is such a

  477. thing as fear of Christians in America.

  478. Not not as great as it maybe once was,

  479. but the fear shows up at like an

  480. economic sense. So if if the Christians

  481. or uh culture is so Christian that it

  482. has a certain morality and that's like

  483. your consumer base and you realize that

  484. they're going to boycott you or have

  485. some kind of backlash against certain

  486. advertising if you um if you have that

  487. advertising, then out of fear of that

  488. backlash, you might decide, you know

  489. what, uh we're not going to do that. And

  490. it seems like whoever is in charge,

  491. whoever's in power, uh, has a huge

  492. effect on how people responding that

  493. way, the perception. But you want to ask

  494. yourself, are you are you a Christian

  495. because of, you know, worldly trends?

  496. So, you're saying you're a Christian

  497. because you might be afraid of not being

  498. called a Christian. I wonder how many

  499. people in the Bible belt say that

  500. they're Christian because it's like to

  501. not be a sort of going against the norm.

  502. But what if America becomes more and

  503. more uncchristian and it seems like

  504. that's the direction we're headed and

  505. all of a sudden uh maybe you're in a

  506. time and an age where it's extremely

  507. unpopular to be a Christian anywhere in

  508. America and then you are you going to

  509. hide that Christianity. Uh I say this

  510. because um it doesn't work to be right

  511. with God to declare yourself a Jew out

  512. of fear of man. It only works to be

  513. right with God, to declare yourself a

  514. Jew in this age out of fear of the Lord.

  515. That hasn't changed at all. If you're a

  516. Christian because you fear the Lord,

  517. uh that is is not going to be as

  518. susceptible to the conforming power of

  519. the world because the object whom you

  520. fear doesn't change.

  521. Right? The person who's actually

  522. victorious, who's Jesus Christ, does not

  523. change. He's the same yesterday and

  524. today and forever. And so it doesn't

  525. matter who is running the

  526. administration. It doesn't matter what

  527. the prevailing cultural norms are

  528. because the object of your fear, the

  529. object of your respect and honor, the

  530. object of your worship hasn't changed at

  531. all. And so then it's really important

  532. to actually know the object of your

  533. worship to know who God actually is.

  534. Because if you think that, as many

  535. Christians I think erently do, that the

  536. God of the Old Testament is somehow in

  537. any way different than the God of the

  538. New Testament, uh first of all, you

  539. haven't been really reading your Bible

  540. very carefully because it's not like

  541. it's hidden in there that they're not

  542. different at all. Uh there aren't two

  543. gods, there's just one. He's the same

  544. all the way through. And he's the one

  545. that is causing uh these people to have

  546. fear of his people, the Jews. I want to

  547. show you that how that's actually a

  548. blessing and a promise that he gave the

  549. Jews and in this case a blessing for

  550. obedience. So it's Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  551. and Deuter Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  552. contains both blessing blessings for

  553. obedience and curses for disobedience.

  554. But we're just going to talk about the

  555. blessings right now. I'm going to show

  556. you two verses quickly. Chapter 28:7

  557. says this. the Lord. Like if you obey

  558. the covenant, if you keep my commands,

  559. the Lord will cause your enemies who

  560. rise against you to be defeated before

  561. you, they shall come out against you one

  562. way and flee before you seven ways. And

  563. then just skipping down to verse 10, and

  564. all the peoples of the earth shall see

  565. that you are called by the name of the

  566. Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.

  567. So this is a blessing that God promises

  568. to Israel uh through Moses in chapter 28

  569. of Deuteronomy that you your enemies

  570. will flee from you and they will be

  571. afraid of you if you're keeping my

  572. command. Now I don't really know

  573. how obedient the Jews were being in

  574. general during that time in Persia. Um,

  575. but it seems to me at least that the

  576. fact that God defends them so powerfully

  577. and has such a turnover of events where

  578. the people that were trying to

  579. annihilate them end up being the ones

  580. that are being annihilated seems like

  581. this was a time in which there was uh

  582. some widespread obedience. It doesn't

  583. have to be that way. God can be merciful

  584. and and protect his people from uh

  585. annihilation even if they're not being

  586. uh particularly obedient, but it just

  587. seems that way in terms of my

  588. interpretive sense. And I thought I

  589. would mention that. So uh God hasn't

  590. changed from Deuteronomy to Esther

  591. either. And so they're experiencing a

  592. blessing from God here. And I want I

  593. wanted to bring that in because unlike

  594. any other book, God doesn't mention

  595. himself explicitly in Esther, but his

  596. providence and sovereignty are right

  597. there uh really just jumping out at you

  598. from the page. Why did the Jews gain

  599. mastery over their enemies? Well,

  600. because God had blessed them with it and

  601. given them favor. And that started all

  602. the way from the throne where Esther was

  603. seated. For fear of them had fallen on

  604. all peoples. It's just a fulfillment of

  605. God's promise of blessing. Verse three,

  606. and all the officials and provinces of

  607. the provinces and the satraps and the

  608. governors and the royal agents also

  609. helped the Jews for the fear of Morortei

  610. had fallen on them. And I generally

  611. think this was political fear. I don't

  612. know exactly all the reasons they were

  613. afraid. Maybe some of them had been

  614. plotting against the Jews and were

  615. afraid of being found out. Maybe some of

  616. them, like I said, were just more

  617. concerned about their power. And it's

  618. kind of that same dynamic that never

  619. really changes where well, whoever is in

  620. power, if he's setting a completely

  621. different course and you've been against

  622. that course, you have somewhat of a

  623. reason to fear. And so you you uh will

  624. be politically showing favor in that

  625. way. Um that's still not the kind of

  626. heart that God esteems. It's got to

  627. really come from your heart. It can't

  628. just be well, whatever man wants. And

  629. that's that's important to us. That's

  630. not living a victorious life where uh

  631. you just go along with whatever trend is

  632. going on. Living a victorious life means

  633. following the Lord in any age. Verse

  634. four, for Mori was great in the king's

  635. house and his fame spread throughout all

  636. the provinces for the man Mori grew more

  637. and more powerful. Verse 5, the Jews

  638. struck all their enemies with a sword

  639. killing and destroying them and did as

  640. they pleased to those who hated them. So

  641. again, I think it's obvious, but I might

  642. as well mention again, if we were

  643. faithfully depicting this in a movie,

  644. the people the Jews were fighting would

  645. have been armed and having approached

  646. them to attack them. Maybe it's possible

  647. that some of them were uh not in the act

  648. of attacking them, but rather like

  649. planning that. But I don't think it

  650. would have been faithful for Jews at

  651. that time to just go and kill someone

  652. who wasn't armed. I think it's important

  653. to look at what the law actually

  654. provided for and what didn't. They

  655. weren't just allowed to go willy-nilly.

  656. Uh and so I I think it would be

  657. unfaithful to show the Jews at this time

  658. attacking anyone that isn't reasonably

  659. considered self-defense. And I think

  660. that's just dividing the word correctly

  661. here. Uh verse 6 in Susa, the citadel,

  662. that's the capital. Uh that's where

  663. Esther is and that's a city um in in

  664. Persia at this time. Um and it's

  665. differentiated from the rural provinces

  666. and they also had their cities but it's

  667. differentiated. So in the Susa city like

  668. within the boundaries of Susa the

  669. citadel itself the Jews killed and

  670. destroyed 500 men. They also killed

  671. Parandatha and Dalphin and Asphatha and

  672. Paratha and Adaliah and Erodatha and

  673. Parmastra and Arisi and Erodi and

  674. Visathi Visatha and the the 10 sons of

  675. Hmon the son of Hamadatha the enemy of

  676. the Jews. but they laid no hand on the

  677. plunder. Um, so again, if I was a

  678. director, the way that I would be

  679. showing this is I'd be showing the 10

  680. sons of Hmon armed and attacking the

  681. Jews and that's why they got killed. It

  682. wasn't this this uh revenge killing.

  683. It's like, well, these are the sons, so

  684. we're going to put them to death because

  685. that would have been illegal. And we

  686. have no reason to accuse the Jews at

  687. this time having done anything illegal.

  688. In fact, they didn't even take full

  689. advantage of their legal rights. Morai

  690. was the one who wrote the law. Uh

  691. Hassawarees had had um uh commissioned

  692. him to do so. And he's the one that had

  693. them put in and to plunder their goods

  694. in verse 11. Legally, they were allowed

  695. to plunder their goods. And yet it says,

  696. "But they laid no hand on the plunder."

  697. Um so they're they're not wildly out of

  698. control. Plundering would have even been

  699. out of control because it's still within

  700. the law. But they weren't in it for the

  701. money. And that's something that uh I

  702. think because of a spirit of

  703. anti-semitism, Jews get get slandered

  704. and uh hated on for all the time. Like

  705. they're just in it for the money.

  706. There's a lot of conspiracy theories

  707. about that. Uh but here the reality is

  708. that God uh points out that they didn't

  709. even lay hand on the plunder. So they're

  710. stopping short of the boundaries of the

  711. law. They're not filling up the boundary

  712. of the law. So if they're stopping short

  713. of the boundary of the law, why would we

  714. claim that they transgressed it anywhere

  715. else? I don't do that. I don't think

  716. that's what God's word is revealing

  717. here. Um, and let's continue. Verse 11.

  718. That very day, the number of those

  719. killed in Susa the Citadel was reported

  720. to the king. So, the king's fully aware

  721. of what's happening. He's getting

  722. reports. And the king said to Queen

  723. Esther in Susa the Citadel, "The Jews

  724. have killed and destroyed 500 men and

  725. also the 10 sons of Hmon. What then have

  726. they done in the rest of the king's

  727. provinces? Now, what is your wish? It

  728. shall be granted you. And what further

  729. is your request? it shall be fulfilled.

  730. Remember the character of Hassaweris. Uh

  731. he has some bright spots like here. Uh

  732. but but early on we it's revealed he's a

  733. womanizer. He has massive anger issues.

  734. Seems to have a drinking issue. And all

  735. he really cares about is his own vain

  736. glory and greatness. Right? So would

  737. that king still have favor for a queen

  738. and a people that were transgressing his

  739. law? No. I don't think so. Um, not that

  740. he's the standard, but it doesn't make

  741. any sense in terms of interpretation to

  742. think that he's being uh given a report

  743. of what's actually happening and still

  744. showing favor if what's actually

  745. happening is violating the law, which

  746. would be a direct extension of his own

  747. felt authority. Like, you're violating

  748. my law, that means you don't respect me.

  749. And remember, this guy's a megalomaniac.

  750. So, he would have had a bombastic

  751. reaction to people violating his law.

  752. And so, I think that really puts it to

  753. rest. He didn't even think what they

  754. were doing was against the law that he

  755. had given. Um, that's still different

  756. than whether God approves it or not. We

  757. talked about that last week. And and

  758. that's where we're going to go into

  759. looking at the character of Christ as a

  760. warrior. Uh, is is is Jesus only meek

  761. and mild or does he exercise his power

  762. violently sometimes? We'll look at that.

  763. And and that's the reason why I'm saying

  764. this is to prepare you in thinking about

  765. what we're about to read in verse 13.

  766. It's really kind of a critical verse

  767. here. And Esther said, "If it pleased

  768. the king, let the Jews who are in Susa

  769. be allowed tomorrow also to do according

  770. to the day's edict. And let the 10 sons

  771. of Hmon be hanged on the gallows." Now

  772. remember, Hmon had uh constructed a

  773. gallows for no just purpose whatsoever.

  774. Morai had done nothing uh uh deserving

  775. of this kind of execution. And this is a

  776. pole 75 ft long, sharpened on one end.

  777. You might think gallows, oh, you know,

  778. they're being hung off. It's like a

  779. hundred years later that the first

  780. historical incident of someone being

  781. hung um as an execution form happens.

  782. So, that wasn't even it. And we have

  783. plenty of depictions. I've showed them

  784. before. They're so violent looking that

  785. I don't actually like showing them in a

  786. mixed audience. But what this is is an

  787. impalement. In fact, some of your um

  788. Bibles actually say impaled. Um and I'm

  789. not just trying to like highlight the

  790. violence. I'm just trying to show you

  791. what actually happened because it we

  792. just got done reading um that in Susa

  793. itself 6 the Jews killed and destroyed

  794. 500 men and also killed and then a list

  795. of the 10 sons. So they're already dead

  796. when she asks for them to be impaled.

  797. Same Esther, same character we saw

  798. before. lovely character, submissive

  799. spirit, pleasing to the Lord, humble,

  800. willing to go through a lot of ugly,

  801. unjust stuff in serving the Lord,

  802. willing to put her own life

  803. for her people.

  804. A woman very pleasing in the sight of

  805. the Lord according to New Testament

  806. standards. And yet here she's asking for

  807. the corpses of the 10 sons of Hmon to be

  808. publicly impaled,

  809. especially to our modern sensibilities.

  810. Uh I would not be surprised if there's

  811. people in this congregation that react

  812. to that like, oh man. And and you know,

  813. if this was faithfully depicted in a

  814. movie, it would be faithfully depicted

  815. as very violent, as the grotesque,

  816. right? Ugly thing, right? A dreadful

  817. thing. So we have to ask ourel the

  818. question, was Esther doing something

  819. that was Christlike or not Christlike?

  820. From within the Old Testament, within

  821. this passage, I believe the reason why

  822. she did this was a warning to anybody

  823. else that would come up with such a

  824. wicked plan and continue attacking them.

  825. It was a deterrent for them. This public

  826. display, here's what happens to you if

  827. you just try to genocide people in this

  828. empire. Um, and so I think she still had

  829. in mind uh protecting the people of God.

  830. Um, it seems to me that in Susa, uh, the

  831. job wasn't finished and there's probably

  832. still enemies that might attack them the

  833. next day and that's why she asked for

  834. that. So, we're going to stop right

  835. there. You might think, "Wow, what a uh

  836. burden of proof he's going to have to

  837. present to say that this is Christlike."

  838. Uh, but if that's the case, you may not

  839. know that side of Jesus Christ. You may

  840. know the gentle side, which is a lovely

  841. side and a side I always only want to be

  842. on, but there's a warrior side to Jesus

  843. Christ. And uh he he often gets falsely

  844. represented as not having that side of

  845. his character, but it could not be more

  846. obvious in scripture. Um so we're going

  847. to go to 2 Thessalonians 1:5-9. and I'll

    2 Thessalonians 1:5–9

  848. have it up on the screen, but if you

  849. have uh a Bible or your own personal

  850. Bible especially, might be good for you

  851. to see this in your own Bible in

  852. whatever translation you enjoy the best

  853. and trust the most uh and then mark

  854. where it is on the page because these

  855. are great verses to show um Christ's

  856. character as a warrior God. So this is

  857. uh 2 Thessalonians chapter 1 verse 5-10.

    2 Thessalonians 1:5–10

  858. And this is also in defense of his

  859. people um in this case the church. This

  860. is the is evidence of the righteous

  861. judgment of God that you may be

  862. considered worthy of the kingdom of God

  863. for which you are also suffering since

  864. indeed God considers it just to repay

  865. with affliction those who afflict you

  866. and to grant belief to you who are

  867. afflicted as well as to us. When the

  868. Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with

  869. his mighty angels in flaming fire,

  870. inflicting vengeance on those who do not

  871. know God and on those who do not obey

  872. the gospel of our Lord Jesus, they will

  873. suffer the punishment of eternal

  874. destruction away from the presence of

  875. the Lord and the glory of his might.

  876. When he comes on that day to be

  877. glorified in his saints and be marveled

  878. at among all who have believed because

  879. our testimony to you was believed. I'll

  880. just read it again here one more time.

  881. Jesus is revealed from heaven, verse 7,

  882. with his mighty angels in flaming fire

  883. inflicting vengeance on those who do not

  884. know God and on those who do not obey

  885. the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. And

  886. obviously this is talking um in a future

  887. prophetic way during a time where there

  888. was a bunch of perse will be a bunch of

  889. persecution um of the church and of

  890. God's people. So when you think about

  891. that, you think, well, are we really

  892. being persecuted? And and it's it's easy

  893. to think that the church isn't being

  894. persecuted in violent ways because we're

  895. so insulated it uh insulated from it in

  896. America, but Vern, an Elderorado church,

  897. was just reporting to me um that it's a

  898. more and more common occurrence right

  899. now in Gene uh in Nigeria u for

  900. Christians to be attacked and murdered

  901. by Muslim terrorists, right? And so if

  902. if your family was just destroyed for no

  903. good reason while worshiping God in

  904. peace, uh do you want a God that will

  905. inflict vengeance on the enemies? What

  906. do we mean when we say vengeance belongs

  907. to the Lord? Vengeance belongs to the

  908. Lord. I was born as a strong willed

  909. child, a difficult child to raise. I

  910. would openly defy my parents. Um and and

  911. so God had to break that will and got

  912. stronger than my will. But I took a long

  913. time to admit that. But when then God

  914. broke that will I was submitted to his

  915. will and and then you that's something

  916. good when a man who has a strong will.

  917. But for me uh I've thought about the

  918. kind of vengeance and the temptation to

  919. take vengeance against someone who would

  920. harm my daughter and how much faith it

  921. would take if somebody did that uh to

  922. not just take vengeance myself and want

  923. to take vengeance myself. So when I

  924. surrender that vengeance to the Lord,

  925. I'm not saying away it goes. I'm saying

  926. I'm entrusting that vengeance to you.

  927. This person deserves that vengeance. And

  928. even if they don't get the just

  929. consequence on earth, God will avenge.

  930. However, I also believe uh that if God

  931. brings them to repentance, then the

  932. person that had to suffer for that sin

  933. is Jesus Christ. Right? So either Jesus

  934. takes the wrath for them and they're

  935. saved or they take the wrath of God. But

  936. when we say that vengeance belongs to

  937. the Lord, that doesn't mean that he will

  938. never take vengeance. You saw it with

  939. your own eyes. Jesus Christ himself will

  940. take vengeance.

  941. That's a fact. That's what it says. And

  942. that's not the only place. Let's go to

  943. Revelation 19 11-15.

  944. Okay. Also about um his return.

  945. Uh Revelation 19:11.

    Revelation 19:11

  946. Then I saw heaven opened and behold a

  947. white horse. The one sitting on is

  948. called faithful and true. And in his in

  949. righteousness, he judges and makes war.

  950. Talking about Jesus. When Jesus returns,

  951. he will make war. And it's not just a

  952. metaphor. Verse 12, his eyes are like a

  953. flame of fire and on his head are many

  954. diadems. And he has a name written that

  955. no one knows but himself. He is he is

  956. clothed in a robe dipped in blood. And

  957. the name by which he is called is the

  958. word of God. And the armies of heaven

  959. arrayed in fine linen, white and pure,

  960. were following him on a white horse.

  961. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with

  962. which to strike down the nations. And he

  963. will rule them with a rod of iron. And

  964. he will tread the wine press of the fury

  965. of the wrath of God Almighty. On his

  966. robe and on his thigh he has a name

  967. written, King of Kings and Lord of

  968. Lords. And we can just let's keep keep

  969. reading because you might think, well,

  970. that is that really as violent as

  971. impalement? It's more violent. Look at

  972. what happens. Verse 17. Then I saw an

  973. angel standing in the sun. And with a

  974. loud voice, he called to all the birds

  975. that fly directly overhead. Come gather

  976. for the great supper of God.

  977. And if you don't read on, maybe you're

  978. thinking about communion. It's not

  979. communion. Unless it's a horror movie

  980. we're talking about. 18. to eat the

  981. flesh of kings, the flesh of captains,

  982. the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of

  983. horses and their riders, and the flesh

  984. of all men, both free and slave, both

  985. small and great.

  986. Again, who is Jesus? Yeah, he's the

  987. suffering service servant and he came

  988. and was willing to die and lay down his

  989. life. Um, but he's also a warrior king.

  990. So, one of the reasons I think why

  991. people are sometimes caught flat-footed

  992. when people with uh I think bad faith

  993. intent try to say from the gospels that

  994. Jesus isn't a warrior and that he's

  995. maybe somehow kind some kind of pacifist

  996. and uh he's not going to inflict

  997. vengeance or something like that. I want

  998. to show you how it's not true from the

  999. gospels as well. Okay, here's Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

1000. chapter 10. Um chapter 10 starting in

  1001. verse 34.

1002. This is Jesus speaking. So in my Bible,

1003. it's not in red letter. This is ESV, but

1004. yours it might actually be red letter.

1005. Jesus himself talking. Do not think that

1006. I have come to bring peace to the earth.

1007. I have not come to bring peace, but a

1008. sword. For I have come to set a man

1009. against his father, and a daughter

1010. against his mother, and a

  1011. daughter-in-law against her

  1012. mother-in-law. A person's enemies will

1013. be those of his own household. Whoever

1014. loves his father more than me is not

1015. worthy of me. And whoever loves son or

1016. daughter more than me is not worthy of

1017. me. Whoever does not take his cross and

1018. follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever f

1019. finds his life will lose it. Whoever

1020. loses his life for my sake will find it.

1021. I have not come to bring peace but a

  1022. sword.

1023. And another place to paraphrase in uh

1024. the gospel he talks about how he has a

1025. fire to kindle and how he wishes already

1026. kindled. And it's very clearly the fire

1027. of judgment. So even in his earthly

1028. life, incarnate God, um he looked

1029. forward to the day where he set things

1030. right through judgment and made war

1031. against those who foolishly and

  1032. faithlessly and unrepentantly continued

1033. uh to in terms of esquetology worship

1034. the beast, worship Satan, and do violent

  1035. and evil things.

1036. So, I could show you so many more

1037. verses, but you've already seen it. I

1038. think we ought to make up our mind. Uh,

1039. that what Esther did wasn't even close

1040. to the violence that Jesus is going to

1041. bring to earth against wickedness. I

1042. think really what happens is we recoil

1043. because we don't take serious how wicked

1044. these sons of Hmon actually were.

1045. Unrepentantly wicked. They would have

1046. killed little children with the sword

1047. that were not attacking them and

1048. unarmed, maybe even in their sleep. they

1049. would have just genocided all the Jews.

1050. Okay? And I'm not using, we use that

1051. word genocide really uh it's kind of

1052. like um everything that's violent that

1053. we don't like is called genocide. Just

1054. like everything that we don't like that

1055. you want to like slam a political

1056. opponent, you just call them racist.

1057. Crying wolf really with genocide and and

1058. racism. I'm not in in this case. They

1059. were going to kill all the Jews. That

1060. was their goal. They wanted to gain

1061. mastery of the Jews in the sense of just

1062. ridding the earth of all Jews. So just

1063. as evil as it gets. And and so I look at

1064. I don't recoil at this. I look at that

1065. and I think this is exactly what they

1066. deserved to be impaled in this way. This

1067. is what Hmon was trying to do to Mori.

1068. This is just It makes me think even more

1069. highly of Esther because she's not just

  1070. a humble and God-erving

1071. sacrificial queen. She's also tough as

1072. nails. Tough as nails. I like it. I like

  1073. it. I don't I don't look at that. I'm

1074. like, "Oh, I think about this will be

1075. hard for those of you who uh rightly uh

1076. maybe are more developed in the gift of

1077. mercy and have really deep sense of

1078. empathy, but that needs to be paired

1079. with a tempering of understanding who

1080. God is in relationship to wickedness.

  1081. She's imitating him. I believe that

1082. she's being Christlike in doing so, in

1083. protecting her people." And there's more

1084. to talk about there, and we'll come back

1085. to it. Let's continue in understanding

1086. what's going on here. Verse 14. So the

1087. king commanded this to be done. He hears

1088. impale them and let give them another

1089. day and and so we move on. A decree was

1090. issued in Susan and the 10 sons of Hmon

1091. were hanged. Uh the Jews who were in

1092. Susa gathered also on the 14th day of

1093. the month of Adar and killed 300 men in

1094. Susa but they laid no hands on the

1095. plunder. Second time saying they laid no

1096. hands. Verse 16. Now, the rest of the

1097. Jews who were in the king's provinces

1098. also gathered to defend their lives and

1099. got relief from the enemies and killed

1100. 75,000 of those who hated them, but they

1101. laid no hands on the plunder. So, in

1102. Susa, but also across the entire Persian

1103. um empire. The Jews did not do this for

1104. the money. It's not why they were in it.

1105. No matter how much the enemy might want

1106. to, you know, spread propaganda lies

1107. about it, that's not the reason they did

1108. it. It was self-defense, well within the

1109. boundaries of the law. Verse 17. This

1110. was on the 13th day of the month of

1111. Adar. And on the 14th day, they rested

1112. and made that day a uh a day of feasting

1113. and gladness. But the Jews who were in

1114. Susa gathered on the 13th day and on the

1115. 14th and rested on the 15th day, making

1116. that day a feast of gladness. So I think

1117. you probably understand uh but just sort

1118. of with my hands visually represented.

1119. Uh I don't know which way you think in

1120. terms of numbers, but so it's opposite

1121. right here. Okay. Okay, so this is the

1122. 13th day of battle for everyone. Then

1123. Esther uh for reasons not fully known,

1124. but if I were to make an educated guess,

1125. because she felt the job wasn't done of

1126. of killing those who had attacked them

1127. and that there was still more securing

1128. of their self-defense need to do, she

1129. asked for another day. So the Jews just

1130. in Susa get the 13th and 14th and their

1131. feast day and rest day since they were

1132. fighting and battling on these two days

1133. is the 15th. in the wider provinces

1134. around Susa and all the way to like

1135. basically the known world. Uh they

1136. fought on the 13th and rested on the

1137. 14th. Um I do not know why she didn't

1138. ask for a 14th day for all the

1139. provinces. Um but she didn't. And so

1140. that that is what is really being

1141. reported here. And 19 says, "Therefore,

1142. the Jews in of the villages who live in

1143. rural towns hold the 14th day of the

1144. month of Adar as the day of gladness and

1145. feasting as a holiday." and as a day on

1146. which they send gifts of food to one

1147. another. Um so I don't know you know

1148. people were texting this as it was

1149. happening. Um but the feast of Purum

1150. which we're going to hear a lot more

1151. about next week um in terms of exactly

1152. what was required and how they were uh

1153. to worship the Lord and celebrate this

1154. and and commemorate it over the years

1155. and pass it on to their children. Uh

1156. this is the history of why it's

1157. established and um the feast of Purum

1158. this year which is in the early spring

1159. um was was being observed while Israel

1160. went to war with Iran right and there

1161. were a lot of Jews noticing the

1162. similarities there too and I in my

1163. worldview Iran is similar to to Hmon um

  1164. and and there's a big difference I'm not

1165. saying that everything that Israel does

1166. politically is right nor do we have to

1167. claim that biblically. Uh however, I

1168. look at the the basically the mission of

1169. some of these Middle Eastern uh

1170. countries and it's it is death to

  1171. Israel. There's a reason why we don't

1172. want Iran to get a nuclear weapon

1173. because we believe they probably will

1174. use it against Israel. So, and and maybe

1175. against the US as well. Um and I won't

1176. wade into the war. We probably have

1177. quite a few different opinions about

1178. that. My point is just the Jews were

1179. this year experiencing battles against

1180. their enemy during the feast of Purum

1181. during this exact time. So for them, uh

1182. this is very real and present and

1183. relevant and modern, uh not just an

1184. ancient old story. Um and I thought that

1185. was really interesting. Um you know, I

1186. also look at this and I'm like, I think

1187. we should bring gifts of food back. Can

1188. we do that? It's biblical.

1189. Should be a teacher. Food gifts. It's

1190. biblical, you know. And if it's during

1191. the month of Adar, we can do uh shish

  1192. kebabs.

1193. It's taking you a while to get that. I

1194. uh asked Christine whether I could tell

1195. that joke. She said no.

1196. But my heart said yes. And I was making

1197. jokes like this the entire time uh

1198. before we married. So there was no false

1199. advertising. Just beat you dub.

  1200. Shish kebabs are delicious.

1201. Um if you're ever wondering what to get

1202. men, by the way, and maybe unless

  1203. they're vegetarian or vegan. I don't

1204. think I know a man. uh that would not

1205. enjoy a gift if it was like a ribeye or

  1206. something like you're wondering like I'm

1207. going to change all my Amazon Prime to

1208. just cuts of meat food gifts. Oh man.

1209. All right. Well, I am joking around

1210. because we're about to get really

1211. serious and it's not a joke. Uh we got

1212. to look at um how God

  1213. Jesus

1214. um is exactly the same today, yesterday,

1215. and forever. And he is the exact

1216. representation of his father. So God the

1217. father is exactly the same way. He is

1218. violent against evil and he has violent

1219. intens attempt against wickedness. It is

1220. who he is. He is also merciful and kind

1221. and generous and forgiving uh and

1222. benevolent. Uh but he's a man of war,

1223. the Old Testament says, and he will make

1224. war. And just because he said his son to

1225. seek and save what was lost and to be a

1226. suffering servant does not mean that he

1227. doesn't have enemies today. And and that

1228. those enemies aren't also enemies of his

1229. people. If if you're identified with the

1230. Lord uh through faith in his cross and

1231. resurrection, then you are his people.

1232. And so God will identify those who hate

1233. you uh for no good reason as your

1234. enemies as well and and as his enemies.

1235. Um, and so where this gets really

1236. serious is considering our status in

1237. relationship to the Lord. Let's go to

  1238. Colossians 1 uh 19-23.

1239. Okay, this is what uh the Lord says

1240. through Paul about our status before we

  1241. were saved.

1242. This talking about Jesus starting in

1243. verse 19. For in him all the fullness of

1244. God was pleased to dwell, and through

1245. him reconciled to himself all things,

1246. whether on earth or in heaven, making

1247. peace by the blood of his cross.

1248. So Jesus did accomplish peace, but he

1249. accomplished it basically by being

1250. impaled himself. Nails through his hands

1251. and through his feet, suffering on the

1252. cross, bearing the wrath of God against

1253. our sin, and atoning for it, so that it

1254. is now actually just for God to forgive

  1255. us.

1256. 1 John 1:9 says uh if we confess our

    1 John 1:9

1257. sin, God is faithful and just to forgive

1258. us our sin and to cleanse cleanse us

1259. from all unrighteousness. Had Jesus not

1260. died on the cross in atoning for sin, it

1261. wouldn't be just for God to forgive us.

1262. Okay? And when did he forgive us? What

1263. status did we have in his eyes in

1264. relationship to him when he accomplished

1265. this for us? Look at verse 21. and you

1266. who are once alienated and hostile in

1267. mind doing evil deeds. Enemy status.

1268. While we were still enemies of God,

1269. Christ died for our sin. Paul makes the

1270. point that people won't really die for

1271. other people, but they especially won't.

1272. They maybe for a righteous person they

1273. would, but who would die for a sinner in

1274. their place? Jesus would. And in so

1275. doing that, he has now reconciled in his

1276. body of his flesh by his death in order

1277. to present you holy and blameless and

1278. above reproach before him. So you were

1279. alienated, hostile, and doing evil

1280. deeds. And now coming to faith in this

1281. cross after what Jesus accomplished,

1282. nothing you accomplished. He just

1283. accomplished it. You're holy, blameless,

1284. and above reproach before him. Okay? A

1285. total transfer. He takes on our sin. We

1286. get his righteousness. So if you think

1287. about this applied to your life, I talk

1288. about marriage a lot. A lot of people

1289. are married and it's just unbelievably

  1290. important. It represents the

1291. relationship between Jesus and his

1292. church. And so your marriage and its

1293. health is part of your witness of the

1294. gospel. Um, is the way that you think

1295. about your marriage that that you are

1296. both former enemies of God, married to

1297. each other, still trying to conquer your

1298. sin, or is it the way like, well, yeah,

1299. your wife's a former enemy, but not you,

1300. or your husband's a former enemy of the

1301. Lord, but not you? And are you are you

1302. hostile in relationship to the Lord in

1303. your marriage? What does that mean?

1304. Well, we know First John also talks

1305. about you can't say that you love the

1306. Lord but hate your neighbor. Nobody's

1307. more your neighbor than your wife or

1308. husband, right? And if you have this

1309. contempt for your husband or contempt

1310. for your wife, this this this

  1311. spiritually sinful attitude towards

1312. them, that's also hostility towards the

  1313. Lord.

1314. So, you can't be totally wrong in

1315. relationship to your spouse and then

1316. totally right in relationship to the

1317. Lord. Um, you got to think about that.

1318. It's the most beautiful marriages are

1319. two people recognize that they're just

1320. two former enemies of the Lord

1321. reconciled by his cross and they're

1322. still trying to overcome their sin. And

1323. when you remember that what you deserved

1324. is what we just read Jesus will do to

  1325. those who don't repent,

1326. then does it feel right in your heart to

1327. like overfocus on your husband or wife's

  1328. sin?

1329. Feels really hypocritical. And and let's

  1330. let's be real, it doesn't mean you can't

1331. talk to somebody. I mean, how are you

1332. going to reconcile with your husband if

1333. he did something wrong like sinned

1334. against you without telling him that

1335. this is a sin and you please ask for

1336. forgiveness for that? Say you're sorry

1337. and I've already forgiven you. But if

1338. you're being hard towards your husband

1339. or hard towards your wife, you're being

1340. hard towards God. That's just one

1341. example. The same thing can happen with

  1342. children. Usually people's relationship

1343. to their children doesn't get bitter

1344. while they're still really young. But

1345. the things that you've left unclansed

  1346. spiritually through confession and

1347. forgiveness and reconciliation with your

1348. children, they start showing up in

1349. teenage years. Uh you'll start seeing

1350. like real rifts between children as

1351. teenagers and and parents. And I'm not

1352. just talking about like, oh, they don't

  1353. think you're cool anymore. I'm talking

1354. about real deep spiritual rifts that

1355. then have ramifications of like once

1356. they leave your house, they don't want

1357. to hang out with you anymore. I've seen

1358. it happen. I hope it doesn't happen to

1359. me, but that's why I take seriously the

1360. idea of like um of of reconciliation

1361. even before the sun goes down. Um

1362. I'm thinking about whether it's okay to

1363. talk about I I think it is. Elijah's at

1364. the age now he used to just tell me

1365. anything he was feeling, but now he's at

1366. an age where he doesn't like talking

1367. about his emotions really. And so I

1368. really have to push for him to talk

1369. about why he might be upset with me and

1370. work it out and kind of tell uh even

1371. though he doesn't want to talk about it,

1372. it's pretty obvious in his countenance.

1373. Um and so that's I'm not looking at that

1374. at just like well I don't like his

1375. attitude or how we're at odds with each

1376. other right now. I'm thinking about this

1377. needs to be washed out every day because

1378. the opposite of that is a bitter root

1379. that grows up sometimes overnight and

1380. then defiles relationships more and

1381. more. I I know some of you fathers that

1382. have raised children into adulthood uh

1383. wish you had applied what I'm talking

1384. about right now because it happened in

1385. your relationship and you may be

1386. estranged from children uh you know and

  1387. parents

1388. my youngest is now four and I can still

1389. hold him but there will be a day where

1390. uh I none of my kids look like babies

1391. anymore you know and that phase has gone

1392. away and it seems like it's coming fast

  1393. um

1394. But I don't think fathers and mothers

1395. ever really stop looking at their sons

1396. and daughters uh whilst also remembering

1397. that they held them as babies. So, it is

1398. a deep and painful wound when you are

1399. all of a sudden this little child that

1400. you loved and were so close to is now

1401. alienated from you because you didn't

1402. take seriously the Lord's command to

1403. forgive and reconcile and to work

1404. through that and to develop that as part

1405. of their hearts from a young age as well

1406. and to model that to them. So again,

1407. back to the marriage part, and we'll

1408. talk about this if you're single as well

1409. in relationship to other people, but if

1410. you're modeling hostility towards your

1411. husband with one another and

1412. unwillingness, like as they start

1413. learning what God's word said says,

1414. they're going to start seeing how you

1415. don't obey it in in your relationship.

1416. And I think in that case, maybe not in

1417. all cases, sometimes when words are

1418. aligned with actions, they speak just as

1419. loud as actions. But in this case,

  1420. they're going to

1421. uh take in the model of your action more

1422. than your words. You can say, "Forgive,

1423. forgive, forgive." But when they watch

1424. you not do, which you think you're going

  1425. to they're going to copy. So, it's a

1426. real gift to your children's spirit to

1427. forgive quickly and often. And even if

1428. there are times where you fail and you

1429. fight with each other in front of them,

1430. I I like when that happens to apologize

1431. not just to my wife where we're done

1432. wrong, but I apologize to the entire

1433. family. My dad did that. He sat us down

1434. in family me like, "Hey, the way I

1435. talked to your mother was not okay. I've

1436. asked her for forgiveness, but I'm also

1437. asking you for forgiveness. Most

1438. importantly, I've asked God for

1439. forgiveness and he's forgiven me. Will

1440. you forgive me, too?" So, I feel like I

1441. got like uh before the concrete settled

1442. in while it was still in the mix, I got

1443. that put in the mix through my dad's

1444. example. Um, and it's not all of you

1445. have. So, for some of you, uh, asking

1446. for forgiveness or forgiving someone,

1447. it's like not on your source code, so to

1448. speak. I I mean, we all still have the

1449. spirit to do it, but what a gift it is

1450. for parents to model that to their

  1451. children. And remember, I said that's

1452. where the battle is. Not to do that is

1453. is enemy territory. Not saying your

1454. status changes. Your status will never

1455. change once you're reconciled. You are

1456. signed and sealed and delivered and

1457. guaranteed through the Holy Spirit

1458. living inside of you. But that doesn't

1459. mean we don't still have a flesh.

1460. Remember we talked about in Galatians 5

1461. and he and Paul listed the works of the

1462. flesh. He said before that that the

1463. flesh is set against the spirit and the

1464. spirit against the flesh. They're at war

1465. with each other inside of your heart,

1466. inside of your mind. That's where the

1467. battle really is. That's where that

1468. terrible attitude towards your husband,

1469. towards your children, towards your

1470. co-workers, towards your boss, towards

1471. anyone comes from. And it has to be

1472. battled. And battle can be painful,

1473. right? your arm twisted around in an arm

1474. bar. Uh someone's trying to put a

1475. submission holder. I know some of you

1476. into mixed martial arts like jiu-jitsu.

1477. You know how painful real physical

1478. battle could be. Spiritual battle I

1479. think is more painful because you might

1480. be needing to forgive your father who

1481. either abandoned you or mistreated you

1482. terribly or your mother or some person

1483. who did some kind of unspeakable

1484. horrible thing. And let's say they did

1485. something towards you uh that where

1486. you're similar to the category of the

1487. Jew back then where it's it really

1488. you're like innocent in relationship to

1489. what they did. It's not something that

1490. you provoked, right? None of us are

1491. truly innocent in relationship to the

1492. Lord. You already saw your status as

1493. hostile and enemies of God. But in this

1494. case, it's really just them that did

1495. this horrible thing and you you didn't

1496. call for it. You didn't do something

1497. that like you you had a wrong in it,

1498. too. And maybe this person was very

1499. close to you and it does not matter. It

1500. matters how horrible the sin is. But in

1501. relationship to what you need to

1502. forgive, it doesn't matter because

1503. Christ has already paid for their sin if

1504. they're going to repent or they're going

1505. to have to pay for it themselves if they

1506. don't. I think that's so so you have to

1507. go to the cross to be able to forgive

1508. someone that's hurt you that bad. You

1509. have to go to the cross to receive

1510. forgiveness when you've hurt people

1511. really bad, no matter what it is.

1512. And so the battle really is is how

1513. quickly will you come to the cross. The

1514. battle is sort of an upside down one.

1515. It's like the person who dies first

  1516. wins.

1517. It makes sense because Jesus won us the

1518. victory through his cross. When I think

1519. of all feasts in the Old Testament, I

1520. think they point to the cross and

1521. resurrection of Jesus Christ. I think of

1522. celebrating Purum. If we're going to

1523. celebrate the substance and not the

1524. shadow, um if we're going to have feasts

1525. like this, it's about commemorating and

1526. celebrating the victory Jesus gave us on

  1527. the cross.

1528. It's about him. Esther in in this way is

1529. a Christ type. And so let let's talk

1530. about like categories not in marriage

1531. but categories of like uh that that

1532. might relate more to single people or

1533. young people. Um, do you take your

1534. attitudes towards your uh your friends

1535. seriously? We have this term probably

1536. made famous through Facebook, but like

1537. you're unfriending someone. Is the

  1538. friendship unfriended because you

1539. unfriended them? Uh, and did you do so

1540. rightly? There are times where in wisdom

1541. you have to put in boundaries in

1542. relationship to people and I understand

1543. that. Uh, but God still sees your

1544. attitude in relationship to them. Have

1545. you already forgiven them? Um, are you

1546. estranged from someone because you're

1547. the person who's not willing to admit

1548. that you're in the wrong, right? You're

1549. losing you're losing the battle of

  1550. Purum. It's not victory. It's not it's

1551. not part of our worship uh to to harden

1552. ourselves in that way. It's part of our

1553. worship to celebrate the victories God

1554. gives us. And if Hmon and his sons had

1555. had victory over their sin by

1556. relinquishing their fleshly desires and

1557. their hatred of God's people and

1558. ultimately their hatred of God, they

1559. wouldn't have had to be impaled.

1560. they wouldn't have had to to die that

  1561. way.

1562. So where the sin starts is in coveting,

1563. is in malice, is in anger, it's in

1564. contempt. Where it ends is a war with

1565. God. Or you can let him battle the sin,

1566. die as a result of the consequence of

1567. sin. So sin requires death. It requires

1568. for God to to punish you with eternal

1569. death. And so that's what Jesus took on

  1570. the cross.

1571. So you every solution you have to the

1572. victory of the battle is through the

1573. cross. That means it's always through

  1574. pain. It's there's never a time where

1575. you come to the foot of the cross

1576. without pain. It hurts to have your

1577. flesh killed. It hurts to have your

1578. flesh killed. It hurts to forgive

1579. someone by faith alone. Do you know what

  1580. I mean? They haven't experienced

1581. justice. A lot of like uh sins are not

1582. like punishable in terms of law like

1583. gossip and and sometimes slanderers, but

1584. gossip uh you can get away with a lot of

1585. really vicious things that destroy

1586. people's reputation before you like trip

1587. liable laws. And so people just get away

1588. with it and it separates friends and

1589. then you kind of feel like well they did

1590. all this really evil speech against me

1591. and there's no consequence and you feel

1592. like you can't forgive them

1593. and and yet you already know it's always

1594. only by faith that you forgive.

1595. So that's when when I talk about the

1596. celebrating the victory of the Lord

1597. gives us uh the Lord gives us is part of

1598. our worship. Like maybe you need victory

1599. today to have like a cleansed attitude

1600. and heart. Maybe there are patterns that

1601. like when nobody's watching at night,

1602. things you look at at your phone are

1603. enemy of God things to look at. And and

  1604. I don't I think it's right uh to

1605. remember that Jesus is a warrior in

1606. moments like that. Especially for men, I

1607. think it's good for us to fear Jesus in

1608. moments when we're sinning in those

1609. kinds of ways. like don't probably

1610. better to think of warrior God and how

1611. he feels about the images you're looking

1612. at. You know, it's enemy behavior and it

1613. ought to be convicting, but it doesn't

1614. change that God is still also the same

1615. merciful and forgiving God. Every week

1616. we have communion to remind us that what

1617. the cross is about is the forgiveness of

1618. our sins. And that is the victory that

1619. you can walk in from your side, from

  1620. your point. If you're a wife or a

1621. husband or a friend or or friends with

1622. someone in junior high or earlier and

1623. they were really mean to you, what it

1624. looks like to have victory is being the

1625. first person to forgive. The first

1626. person to say they're sorry, the first

1627. person to power down, humble themselves,

1628. and go to the cross and remember you are

1629. only saved after having already been an

  1630. enemy of the Lord.

1631. Is your husband's sin against you worse

1632. than your sin against Christ? No way.

1633. So it'll be painful but man if both the

1634. people in the mar like it doesn't matter

1635. how broken your marriage is if both of

1636. you meet at the cross it can with

1637. immediaccy be healed that's the battle

1638. that is no wonder Satan's primary weapon

1639. is temptation to give into the flesh he

1640. knows it just leads to destruction it's

1641. all he desires he's just opposing the

  1642. will of the Lord

1643. so today if As Emily comes back up here,

1644. we were going to celebrate the Lord in

1645. worship. Doing that, worshiping the Lord

1646. in spirit and truth means having victory

1647. over your sin through the cross of Jesus

1648. Christ, being reconciled, being washed,

  1649. being renewed,

1650. being transformed again and again and

1651. again into the likeness of Christ.

1652. That's what it looks like to celebrate

1653. the feast of Purum in a spiritual way.

1654. So, whatever it is, I don't know if

1655. you've been losing the battle, you can

1656. have victory today. If you've been

1657. having victory, you can have more

  1658. victory today.

1659. So, but that's it's going to be painful.

1660. And I don't know it, the Lord knows it.

1661. You can come bring it. And you can know

1662. two things. Uh the Lord has not changed

1663. in terms of his hatred of sin. And the

1664. Lord has not changed in terms of his

1665. mercy and forgiveness either. So come if

1666. you need to talk to somebody about it,

1667. the elders are ready for that. There may

1668. be other people in your life that you

1669. can talk to that you have immediate

1670. access to. But whatever you do, don't

  1671. don't walk

1672. in defeat today any longer. Don't let

1673. your sin defeat you in this way.

1674. Celebrate that victory with us right now

1675. in worship. At at Boon Fairy, we have

1676. communion. Um except for the very last

1677. Sunday of the week, uh where at any time

1678. you can go and grab the elements. We

1679. serve both wine and juice. So if you're

1680. not wanting to uh take wine, just

1681. remember they're labeled. Um and so look

1682. at that. You take the elements, you can

1683. take it back to your seat. You can have

1684. communion right at the table. You can

1685. come back and pray. We do communion in a

1686. sort of free form any time during the

1687. next two songs. There's also table back

1688. there. Sometimes I've seen people kneel

1689. there. Uh everybody's focused on God as

1690. we worship. So you just focus on the

1691. Lord and what he's accomplished to

1692. forgive you and continue uh to forgive

1693. you of anything and to to call you a

1694. friend and a child of God, an enemy no

1695. longer. Let me pray. Father, thank you

1696. for this convicting message. I pray that

1697. each and every person here would come to

1698. communion in spirit and in truth,

1699. celebrating your victory over sin,

1700. giving us that victory. There's no

1701. greater victory over uh over anything

1702. other than victory over sin and death.

1703. And so, you've already given us the

1704. greatest victory. And because of that,

1705. Lord, I'm personally thankful that

  1706. you're still a warrior and that you're

1707. the kind of warrior that can defeat our

1708. sin and death. I pray these things in

  1709. Jesus name. Amen.
