Wait for the Promise

How do you spell church anyway? C-U-R-C-H, right?

So you take the U, and they took the U-R out, and it said, church is not church

unless the U are there. Praise the Lord.

So church is not church unless everybody's here. And the more the merrier.

Somebody say amen to that.

But I'm looking forward to this neighborhood outreach and things.

We want to just do what we can while we can.

We're going down to the mission, too, and doing things there, too.

So God is good. Isn't he good?

Amen. Today's lesson, we're going to look at, we're going to start here and we'll see how it goes.

We're going to go to very familiar scripture. We're going through,

if you haven't noticed, we went all the way through the Bible in the last year.

We've went all the way through and we're now in the book of Acts.

And last week we talked about the great commission.

And now we are going to see the fulfillment of the great commission on the day of Pentecost.

And I was listening to this. They have a, if you want to listen to your church

lesson instead of read it, there's also a podcast called God's Word for Life.

It's a podcast, the United Pentecostal Church, and they give this lesson on

the podcast, basically.

So if you want to drive and listen to it, it's good.

But let's look at Acts 2 and very familiar scriptures. 37, excuse me,

Acts 2, 37 and through 39.

And when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart and said unto Peter,

and to the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?

Then Peter said unto them, excuse me, repent and be baptized every one of you

in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive

the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off,

even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Amen. This is the inauguration of the new covenant when Jesus poured out his spirit.

Amen. Let's pray one more time. Lord, we love you.

Thank you for your blessings to us, God. We can't do it without you.

We love you, and we give you thanks. Amen.

We give you thanks. Amen. You may be seated.

Praise God. So we know that Jesus sent the disciples. We talked about the Great

Commission, and Peter preached to the people, and there's so much you could

say here. But I like what the lesson said.

Remember when we talked about, the kids can go back if I didn't say that.

Remember the lesson here last week or two, Jesus told the disciples to go back and to,

when he resurrected, the Bible says that He was seen of over 500 people, right?

I thought this was interesting. Jesus appeared, they say in Galilee,

where he did a lot of his work, to over 500 people.

And the disciples, the 12 saw him, and at least 500 brethren all at once, they said.

But it's interesting, when you read Acts, there's only 120 in the upper room, okay?

So he gave them the instructions.

And the thing that stuck out to me when I was looking at this last night,

let's go back and look at Acts 1 and 8 real quick.

And he said, I'll paraphrase it while I'm turning there, but go back to Jerusalem,

go back to Jerusalem, he said, and wait.

This is what really stuck out to me last night.

Go back to Jerusalem. He said, there's a promise from the Father to you.

And go back to Jerusalem. And they were talking about this in the lesson.

And when they read it or when I heard it, it jumped out.

And the Bible says, the promise is unto you. That's got my scripture mixed up.

But he said, go back in Jerusalem and wait, wait for the promise of the Father.

John baptized with water, but ye not many days from now, ye shall be baptized,

be placed in and introduced to the Holy Ghost.

You shall receive power. After that, the Holy Ghost has come upon you,

and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and other ends of

the world, other ends of the earth.

I've got my amplified here. But here's what got me.

Go to Jerusalem and wait.

Wait for the promise. You know, and that's the way it is with God.

Sometimes you have to wait.

And we don't like to wait. And they brought it out in the lesson that maybe

there were more at the upper room.

You know, he had seen of all these people, 500, maybe more than that were there to start with.

Before the day of Pentecost came, but maybe they just didn't wait.

Maybe they left early. You know, sometimes there'll be a big game or something

you'll read about later on.

The team's down by 15 and it's like one minute to go.

So everybody leaves or most, a lot of people leave. They think,

well, there'll be, well, and then you got to come back and the team wins.

And they say, man, I left too early.

You know, you can leave too early on God.

You got to wait on God. Amen. You got to wait for the promise,

okay? And waiting is very hard to do.

When I was younger, I was kind of impulsive.

When Sister Young and I got married, that was kind of a, I don't want to say

an impulse thing, but it was fast.

We got, I think she asked me to marry her or something. I can't remember how

it all came down, but where's she at?

No, I'm kidding. But we talked to her. She said, you want to get married?

Sure. So I just, boom. I didn't have no money. Went over to my dad,

said I need to borrow $500.

I need to borrow $500 and want to get married.

Borrowed $500. dollars, got married, boom. Next thing you know, boom, I was married.

And was it rough for a while? Huh? What'd you say?

Us? Hush. Okay. Hush. Hush.

But sometimes you got to wait. The Bible says, I got to looking on this,

you know, he said, go back to Jerusalem and wait for the promise.

So I got to thinking about this, and I got to looking it up last night.

There are a lot of promises in the Old Testament, okay, that lead up to this waiting, okay?

Psalms 27, 14, wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and he will strengthen thine heart.

Wait, I say, on the Lord, okay?

So God could have promises for us, and he does have promises for us,

and he can have things in our life that are good, but we've got to wait.

Sometimes we get in a big hurry, don't we?

Or sometimes we get discouraged and we don't wait. I'm going to read these scriptures

because these are all good.

Psalms 37 and 7, Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him.

Fret not thyself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man

who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

You see all this stuff happening fast. The wicked are getting ahead and you're trying to wait.

And that kind of gets discouraging, don't it?

You know, I remember that when I've told you this, when I was getting ready

to quit my job, when I was working for the apartments,

and I was going to quit and I took a day off and I, but I went to the church

and I went by there and prayed and something just kind of impressed me.

Just, just wait a little bit.

And I did. And I waited just a little bit, couple, three weeks.

Next thing you know, they were going to let me go because they were running out of work.

But I didn't feel bad about it because I knew that I had waited and things were

getting ready to unfold.

It's good when you know you're in the will of God and things are unfolding.

But sometimes you got to let them unfold.

You can't make that rose grow any faster.

I cannot make a rose bloom, but God can.

I can't make a beautiful flower, but he can. Amen.

So it doesn't matter if everybody else is getting ahead or whatever.

But remember now we're talking about Jesus telling his disciples to wait,

wait, go to the upper room, go to the Jerusalem and wait.

I got something for you, but you just got to wait. Okay.

I am weary of my crying, the psalmist said.

My throat is dried and mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

Sometimes life's hard, ain't it?

You ever had any tears, anybody? You ever had any problems and you're trying

to do the right thing? And he said, I am weary of my crying and my throat is dried.

Mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

Psalms 130 and 5 says, I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait.

In his word do I hope. Okay.

Now, let me say these disciples, I'm sure they were pretty good students of

the Bible if they were Jewish people.

The ranking was like this. The Pharisees and were the strictest of the Jewish

people. They kept all the law.

They were very religious. They were kind of self-righteous, and they believed

in the resurrection. They were real strict.

And then you had the Sadducees.

They were religious, but they didn't believe in the resurrection.

And then you had the publicans, and the Bible talks about publicans.

Those were the tax collectors. You had a society.

You had the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the publicans. And then you had

sinners in the New Testament.

A sinner in the New Testament is just common people.

Common people living their life, going to work, but they didn't always go to synagogue.

They didn't always go to the temple. They might go on Easter,

maybe. They might go on Christmas, and they were called sinners, okay?

Now, unless these disciples—well, I know there was public tax collectors that

he called, but Peter and his brother Andrew and James and his brother John,

they were fishermen, so I'm not sure.

I could say they were probably—if they were good Jewish people,

they probably knew the scriptures.

So I hope they knew that there was a blessing in waiting on God.

So when he told them to go to Jerusalem and wait, I hope they understood.

But according to the scriptures, there's good things for those that wait on God.

I hope they had that understanding. I hope they had that understanding.

Isaiah says, but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength and

they shall mount up with wings as eagles.

They shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint.

Praise the Lord. It's blessing to wait on God. Amen. The Lord is good unto them.

Now listen to me. Lamentations 3.25. The Lord is good unto them that wait for

him, to the soul that seeketh him.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

Amen. Now, the one that really got me was this last one I got.

This one kind of points to this promise that they were about to get. This one kind of.

This one is kind of speaks. It's a prophet. It's Habakkuk. And it kind of speaks

into the future. And this one I like, the language.

For the vision is yet for an appointed time.

Okay. Now listen to the language. Now remember, we're talking about the day of Pentecost.

We're talking about Jesus telling them to wait. Now we know what happened. Okay.

They received the promise and they began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit

of God gives the utterance.

Now, on the day of Pentecost, there were people from all over the world there

to celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost was one of their main feasts of the year, okay?

And it was 50 days, I think, after the Passover, 40 days after the resurrection,

if I got it right, okay? But it was 50 days after Passover was the day of Pentecost.

It was a big Jewish feast.

So there were people from all over the world that came to Jerusalem,

and Jesus told his disciples go to the upper room and wait for the promise.

And we know that when the promise came, they spoke in other tongues as the Spirit

of God gives the utterance.

And Peter said, this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.

In the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.

Peter tied directly the happening on the day of Pentecost to the Old testament

prophet but listen to the words of this prophet and now knowing everything we

just said listen to how beautiful this is,

for the vision is yet for an appointed time.

But at the end, it shall speak. Isn't that amazing?

And not lie. Though it tarry, wait for it, because it will surely come,

it will not tarry. Hallelujah.

There was going to be a day of Pentecost. There was going to,

well, I say was in context here, that it was going to happen.

There was going to be an outpouring of his spirit, and God promised it.

And he told him, But I want to tell you, you'd miss out on God sometimes if

we don't wait. I don't know why I feel that.

And I was reading and studying this and so forth last night.

God tells us sometimes to wait on him. Amen.

And the promise that we're looking for comes when we wait.

I don't know how many started in the upper room, but I know there was only 120

when the Holy Ghost came down.

I wonder if they got tired of waiting. I wonder if they got tired of waiting.

Well, Jesus said this. We've got a promise coming.

We've got a promise in Jerusalem, we've got a promise coming,

and I'm not sure that, you know.

I'm not sure if I want to wait. I'm tired. I got to go. You know,

I got things to do, but wait on the Lord. Somebody say, wait on the Lord.

Amen. Somebody needs to hear that word.

Somebody needs to hear that word today. Wait on the Lord.

Amen. And if you wait on God and let God do it, you're so much better off.

I said, if you wait on God and let God do it, you're better off to let God do

it. Amen. Don't get ahead of God.

And you learn that as you grow older. Okay. You can get ahead of God.

You can get far out there. You can tarry at Jerusalem. Stay there. Stay there.

Stay in a place. Okay. During the waiting period between Jesus' ascension and

the day of Pentecost, the number of those who were willing to wait slowly dwindled.

The Apostle Paul stated that Jesus appeared to over 500 individuals after his

resurrection, but only 120 were present in the upper room.

While some of the larger crowd undoubtedly had reasons why they could not wait,

they missed out on the initial outpouring of the Spirit.

You know, we can always come up with the reason.

People come up with reasons to not wait. They come up with reasons to do this.

They come up with reasons. How many knows we can justify ourselves?

We can decide what we want to do, and we can tell ourselves why it's a good idea to do it.

And we can justify ourselves. We're so good at justifying ourselves,

we can do wrong and say it was okay.

Humans can, they'll do wrong, but they'll have it figured out why it's okay to do it.

Come on now, you know what's the truth? Humanity are so smart,

they think that they can do something wrong, but in their own mind,

they say, well, it needed to be done anyway.

The end justifies the means, somebody said. But let me say,

possibly they were not fully convinced of Jesus' message.

Okay. When you wait on God, you, if you wait on God, that means you believe God.

If you don't believe God, you won't wait on him.

You got to believe on him. You got to wait on him. Somebody say we need to wait

on him. We need to, if, but if you don't believe him, well, it ain't really going to happen.

It's not really going to happen. It's not really going to come.

It's not, you know, I'm giving up.

I'm trying to get ahead. I'm trying to do good, but it just ain't happening,

so I'm going to throw up the towel and not wait.

Let me tell you, in the Holy Ghost today, wait on God.

I said wait on God.

Perhaps they were not fully convinced of Jesus' witness or Jesus' message,

even after witnessing him resurrect and ascend.

Okay. Now, the Bible says that they were in one accord.

So at least these, uh, let me say, if you want to have, we want Pentecost,

we've got to be in one accord.

They were all there in one accord. They were all there waiting.

They were the ones that believed it. They were in the upper room and they were

waiting. They agreed collectively, individually.

They decided to stay there and do what Jesus said. And we're going to do what Jesus said.

I want to tell you, you get a group of people together that say,

we're going to do what Jesus said.

We're going to wait on God and do what Jesus said. You got something.

You got something. You get 120 people going 120 different directions,

120 beliefs, and some waiting, some not waiting, some saying this, and some saying that.

But when you get 120 people in the upper room, and they were all praying and

waiting like Jesus told them to.

They were with one mind and one accord. They were all there for the same reason.

Wouldn't it be good if everybody came to church for the same reason?

Came to worship God, came to praise God, came to wait on an outpouring of God.

Amen. Come to prayer meeting to pray and wait on God. The old timers used to

go pray. And you know what they'd say?

Let's just wait on God. They'd just pray and wait on God. They'd just sit there, wait, just pray.

You know, ain't much waiting going on. If you're praying 10 minutes, come on somebody.

Boom. I heard that one hit against the back wall back there.

We can't wait. We got stuff to do. I got stuff to do, God. I ain't got time.

What am I going to do? No, we need to wait on God.

Amen. Spend a little time on your knees, praise the Lord.

Just lay before the Lord. Sometimes that's what you do. But put yourself in

a position to let God, here I am, God.

I can't even think of a whole lot to say, Lord, but here I am. I'm going to take.

God, and they were all together seeking the same thing, and when they did, they were there.

They continued daily in fervent prayer.

The day was just past nine o'clock in the morning, and those,

the Bible says, they were all sitting there in one mind and one accord.

Do you know that in modern times,

when the Holy Ghost was outpoured in Topeka, Kansas, I believe it was July 1st,

1901, or January 1st, 1901, first day of the 20th century.

They had a Bible school there, and they were studying the scriptures,

and the leader of the Bible school gave them instructions.

And he told them, he said, while I'm gone, study the scriptures to see what

the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost was.

So they all started. So they, those at the Bible school, decided to search the

scriptures and pray. And when he came back, He asked them what they came up with.

And they came up with the fact that when you received the Holy Ghost,

the initial sign was speaking another time.

So they began to seek God for an outpouring of the Holy Ghost.

And I believe it was January 1, 1901. If I got my facts right, you can fact check me.

But one night, one dear sister come running down the hallway and said, I got it.

And it began an outpouring of modern day Pentecostal movement and it spread

like wildfire. We ended up in California. You can read about the Azusa Street Revival.

You can read about Pentecost right now. The fastest growing movement in the

world is the Pentecostal movement.

Down in South America, the Catholics are scared to death of it because people are going Pentecostal.

You know, one of the biggest churches in the world is in Africa.

I think it's Nigeria or somewhere. The building holds like 100,000 people.

And I'm not sure what their denomination is, but I want to tell you,

God is pouring out his spirit like he said he would, but he's doing it on those

that wait on him and follow him. You see, waiting on somebody is not just sitting

there waiting, it's following instructions.

Jesus told many a parables about those who were supposed to be watching the

vineyard when the master of the house left.

And he gave instructions and said, now take care of this vineyard till I get back.

And they got tired of waiting. They said, he's not coming back.

They got slothful. They let things down. They let things go.

They said, he's not coming back.

And when he came back, they weren't doing what they were supposed to do.

And they were lost. And the Bible says it like this, they lost out.

And Jesus said, that's the way it'll be. They were cast into darkness with weeping

and wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I want to tell you, we need to wait on God, and we need to follow God and do

what he told us to do while we're waiting.

Amen. While we're waiting on God, we need to do, the Bible says, occupy till I come.

We're supposed to be Christians while we're waiting on him. Amen.

Somebody said we need to, amen, we need to wait on him. Praise God.

Now, I don't know about this when you read about this.

When the Bible says that there appeared unto them cloven tongues like a fire.

Now, I've read some stuff, and I read a book. I'm not sure. Now,

if you see a picture of this, somebody depicting the upper room,

they'll put fire up on top of their heads.

Now, I could be wrong, and maybe they all saw fire over the top of each other's

heads, but I don't think that's what it's describing, okay?

There appeared unto them cloven tongues, as I think if you read the Scripture,

it's a description of what was happening to the people.

There appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire, okay?

And they all began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit of God,

I think their tongues started flickering.

And their tongues started flickering, maybe like a flame flickers.

Are you with me? You say, Brother Young, you're way out in left field. Maybe I am.

Maybe it was just a fire over their head, but I don't think so.

I think God did just exactly what he said he was going to do,

and they were speaking with other tongues or languages.

Okay. Now, see, if you think that happened with the fire on top of their head,

and they received the Holy Ghost initially, then you would have to say,

why doesn't it happen to everybody initially?

Right? Why doesn't everybody, when they received the Holy Ghost,

have the fire over their head?

Is it 1105 already? Wow. Okay. Okay.

But the sign of speaking, you know, the writer says it like this.

It says, while the sign of fire was not repeated, the sign of tongues was,

okay, making speaking in tongues the normative sign for receiving the Holy Spirit, okay?

The demonstration was so spectacular that thousands of people outside the upper

room heard and were amazed.

The beginning, the outtouring mark, the beginning of a new covenant God had

always wanted to share with his people.

Peter connected this event to prophecy from Joel, just like we said,

indicating the same God of the prophets was responsible for this event.

Just as David's tongue was glad upon witnessing the Lord, those present at Pentecost

would experience a gladness like never before as they spoke with other tongues.

Amen. Everybody needs a Holy Ghost, don't they?

Everybody needs the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Now, there's a lot of, you could say a lot about speaking in tongues,

and there's a lot of discussion here about it, but,

They heard them speak in their languages, those people that were from the rest of the world.

But they all spoke the common language, and it was either Greek or Aramaic,

because I don't know what language Peter preached when he stood up to preach

the message, but they all understood him.

And the Bible says when he got done preaching about who Jesus was,

the fact that they crucified him,

the fact that they crucified the Lord from glory, if they would have known who

he was, they would have not have crucified the Lord from glory.

And the Bible says they were pricked in their hearts.

They were convicted because they knew their attitude and they knew what they

had done. And they said, what must we do?

Let me say, there's a lot of people running around today looking for something.

And the question in their heart is, what must I do?

What can I do to be better? What can I do to get this feeling that I want gone, gone?

What can I do to get happiness? What can I do to find something that's better

than what I have? The answer is still the same.

What must I do? Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus

Christ, for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off,

even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

I don't think the message ever changed. I don't think that ever changed.

You go through the dark ages.

You can read books about church history where some of these monks were tongue

talkers. And let me say, the world went into dark ages, didn't they?

But you know why they went into dark ages? They didn't believe God.

They didn't wait on God. People are funny.

They still have a problem, okay? Even when the Lord—now, the church Bible says there was 3,000 added.

Then there was 5,000 added, and the church began to expand.

And then you had all the false doctrine that starts coming in.

Paul talked about the false doctrine that was going to come in.

And Paul talked about the ravening wolves, and Peter talked about it,

that this stuff would come in.

And people, they got away from the truth. But let me tell you,

God will never leave himself without a witness, I believe.

Somewhere, let me say, history is written by the victors, okay?

But just because somebody said in 300 A.D.

That the orthodox way was to do it, the Trinitarian formula and all that,

doesn't mean somebody wasn't baptizing in Jesus' name somewhere.

Doesn't mean that somebody wasn't receiving the Holy Ghost somewhere.

Amen. And.

Because here's what happened. If you got to a place where you didn't do it like

they said you should do it, we would be killed.

You would be killed. They got so far out of whack.

But you need to read church history because it's so good how men went into the

dark ages. But in the Bible says, it shall be light in the evening time.

There shall be light in the evening time. And let me say, we are in the evening time.

We're living in the last days, the last few hours of the last few days,

and the last few moments are slipping away.

I read, when I read and I hear what's going on in the world,

and there's so much stuff going on that we don't comprehend it all.

There's things going on in our world we can't get a hold of.

You know, we can see that AI is coming. We can see this and we can see that.

But I want to tell you, there are some diabolical, now you think Brother Young's

crazy, there are some diabolical forces at work in the world today.

The spirit, the Bible said in

the New Testament times that the spirit of Antichrist was already at work.

And let me tell you, it's still working today.

And when I read that the Catholic put a prayer room for the Muslims in the Vatican,

something, you know, I'll step way out there.

You get those two together.

When you get a one world religion and never mind.

That's way out there. But I'll tell you what.

There's some forces out there that are working, ladies and gentlemen,

and that's why we need to wait on God.

That's why we need to serve Him. We need to follow Him. We need to wait on Him.

We need to be led by Him. Come on, somebody.

We want Him to direct our path. We want Him to be in charge.

Praise the Lord. We want God to lead us in the right way because we can go the wrong way.

I'm capable. People are capable of going the wrong way.

Absolutely i was praying this morning god don't let me go the wrong way jesus

said it like this when you pray lead us not into temptation,

the best way another way of saying that is lord don't let me be led into temptation,

i don't want to be led into temptation do you i want to go the right way jesus

said pray that you might escape and and wait on god and seek God.

Put God first. Let God wait on him. Put him in charge.

Say, God, I'm going to follow you and let you work on things.

I'm going to let you let the rose unfold.

I can't unfold it, God, but you can. Praise the Lord.

Wait on the Lord. And there's so much in that waiting.

And it's a wise thing. So, but this promise is out there through anybody that

wants it. Aren't you glad?

Amen. If you've never been baptized in Jesus' name, we got the water over here.

And God will fill you with the Holy Ghost. Somebody say amen to that.

If we choose to respond positively to the gospel, we must begin with repentance.

We must abandon our sinful lifestyles and make an ongoing and concerted effort to flee from sin.

And I'm going to tell you what, you do that more than once.

You have to repent to get saved to start with, but I want to tell you what,

you got to repent sometimes on down the road a little ways, too.

You got to come back to a place and say, Lord, renew me again.

Get me back on the right track. Somebody say amen to that.

A concerted effort to flee from sin while repentance can occur in a moment.

Repentance is also a lifestyle. We wake every day and choose to turn away from sin and toward Christ.

Every one of us do that every day.

We're either turning towards Christ or we're not.

Okay? And once you choose to turn away, then you get baptized by immersion in

water with the name of Jesus called over you.

And this is the only way believers were baptized in the book of Acts.

We are baptized in Jesus' name because he is the only name that can save us.

When we're baptized, our sins are washed away, and we become new creations in Christ.

Finally, when we have the assurance we've responded to faith,

to the gospel, God will fill us with the Holy Ghost, with the Holy Spirit,

with the sign of speaking in tongues.

Some have received the Holy Ghost before they were baptized,

like Cornelius and his household, but they were baptized in the name of Jesus.

As a matter of fact, Peter commanded them to be.

The Holy Ghost is a free gift to us. Every hungry heart for God should be experiencing

the outpouring of his wonderful life-changing gift. Somebody say amen.

But it all started, as the music comes, but it all started with a group of people,

that obeyed Jesus, went to the upper room, and waited on him.

We don't know what's going to happen, but I'm going to wait on him.

I don't know how long it's going to take, but I'm going to wait on him.

I'm not even sure what's going to unfold here, but I'm going to wait on him.

And those that obeyed and waited received the Holy Ghost.

Amen. Aren't you glad you can still get the Holy Ghost today?

Praise the Lord. So we're going to open the altar like always.
