Returning to Our First Love

Breakthrough Church: Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Breakthrough Church podcast. ⁓ it's been a while. ⁓ lots going on. ⁓ summer camps and Jesus saves and all the things. So I want to give you guys an update and share some testimonies that I hope will stir your faith. ⁓ and then kind of give you a little ⁓ taste of ⁓ kind of what the what the Lord has been and speaking to me about and what's coming up for Breakthrough Church. ⁓ okay. I'll try to run through these quickly. So there is this thing called Jesus Saves Twenty Six, which is this a ⁓ massive evangelistic outreach coordinated by Time to Revive, ⁓ that's lined up with the World Cup. So anytime there's a a game happening in one of the three countries that World Cup is happening, ⁓ Time to Revive is coordinated in an outreach where there's a group of Christians going out to share the gospel around the stadium that the game or the match is being played. So Really cool. We participated in two of those as a church. We went to a Wednesday one, which was England versus Croatia. We went to Fan Fest, ⁓ out south ⁓ in South Dallas at Fair Park. And then we went to two Saturdays ago, we went to Clyde Warren Park to share the gospel and pray for people that were watching the Argentina and Jordan game, ⁓ that night at nine o'clock. So ⁓ it was really amazing that we got to participate and ⁓ I was so grateful for just the show the the people who showed up for breakthrough. I think both times. The first time we had maybe six and then the next time we had nine. ⁓ and it was just so fun to be around just the community that God's building at Breakthrough. And it's just beautiful. And so the first time we went was a Wednesday. But before we went there, I went to share the gospel at a park with one of my friends slash guys I'm pouring into discipline. And we walked around, ⁓ well, we we sat this is my favorite thing to do. We sit at a park, we catch up for like twenty, thirty minutes. And and then we we get up and we walk around the park. And just to paint paint a picture, we're literally just walking and we're praying, asking God for divine appointments and having conversation with each other as well. And and then we see someone and we're like, All right, Lord, you want us to talk to them? And we we go up and it was in the middle of the day and it was really hot. So, you know, we didn't expect to see a ton of people, but we did see a couple there that were they were at ⁓ the park playing with their boy, their son, who's I think was four years old, I think they said. And ⁓ he was playing and we walked up. I well, I saw a tattoo on him and I said, Dude, what's your tattoo? And he told me it was the name of his son. I said, ⁓ great. I love that. You know, you guys live around here. And we just started making connections. It's the first thing you need to do if you're doing evangelism like this, just make connections relationally as quickly as you can. Just notice something on him. Not sure. Where'd you get that? Or dude, I love your shoes. I've always wanted some of those. Or make some sort of connection with them that's not quote unquote spiritual or Jesus related. Just connect with them. Be a friendly person. And so I did that. I and and and that we started a conversation and then asked if they needed prayer for anything. And I think they said something related to her mom or something. I don't fully remember. We prayed for it. And afterwards I said, Well, hey, you guys heard the gospel before? And they're like, No, no, I don't maybe, I don't know. And so I shared the gospel, the what we what we share. It's ⁓ repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, and it goes to the wages of sin is death. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. But the free gift of God is eternal life. I went through the whole thing and how you receive by faith. And when you do, you have life forevermore, starting now and discipleship and all the things. And so it sounds like it was a long presentation, but it was really probably two to three minutes long. I was keeping it short and sweet. ⁓ and ⁓ and I said, Have you guys heard that before? And they were like, ⁓ some of it, some of it. You know, they seemed a little bit like familiar enough to know, like, yeah, I should probably try to be a good person and this is true, but no one can really know where you're going. So I Actually asked them, I said, if on a scale of one to ten, ten being one hundred percent sure sure, how sure are you that you're going to heaven if you were to die right now? And he said seven, and she said eight point five. And that was my end. And I said, Well, guys, what if I told you you could know without a shadow of doubt that you're going to heaven if you were to die right now? And ⁓ they were like, Well, that would be nice. And I said, Okay, well. Ask me and answer me this. Did Jesus die for 70% of your sins or 85% of your sins? Or a hundred percent of your sins? And they're like, Well, yeah, I guess a hundred percent. And I'm like, Amen. And so I preached the the cross. I was I preached. It sounds formal. I talked to them about the cross. I said, Jesus died for all of your sins. His cross is sufficient. His death was sufficient. There's no more sacrifice needed. You guys, it's just by faith in Jesus. You're you're sealed for eternity in relationship with him, starting right now. And do you guys want to pray for that? And they're like, Yeah. And so we prayed for that. And while we were why while I started to go there, their son, who was very content playing, came over and started making a ruckus. Now, four-year-olds can be four-year-olds. I understand that. But the timing of this made me feel like this was some sort of distraction from the enemy. Now, I don't know how that works. I'm not saying this boy was demon possessed. I'm not I he could have been, I don't know. I'm not saying he was or wasn't. I'm just saying at that moment it became very difficult to follow through with this prayer and sharing the gospel with this with this couple. But we worked our way through, we prayed, they prayed and they felt a lot better afterwards. I got their phone number because I'm always trying to follow up with someone. And it was a really meaningful like they received Jesus, right? Like they they they acknowledged that he died for all of their sins. And I believe something happened in that moment, you know, like it was really powerful and I felt the Holy Spirit leading us. And my my friend Jacob was really great in the conversation, had a few things that he talked about, which was really good and helpful. And ⁓ and and then we walked on and I ended up texting him later and I didn't get a response. And that's okay, that happens, but that was a really powerful testimony. So then we went to England Croatia game the next day, and it was so hard. I think I may have shared this with you guys, and I'll I'll skip most of this, but it was it was just difficult. ⁓ lots of people were there, they were there to watch soccer, and that's fine. ⁓ so ⁓ okay, so then fast forward to ⁓ the next Jesus saves, which was the next Saturday, and I believe it was June twentieth, maybe. ⁓ I think it sounds right. And ⁓ no, I don't know when it was, whatever. ⁓ it was two Saturdays ago. And ⁓ we finished up church. So so church went from five to six ish, six thirty ish, and we just did a equipping and ⁓ training on how to do evangelism and what this looks like to share the gospel with people on the streets or people that we know, whoever it might be. And ⁓ and then we went out and and went to Clyde Warren Park and ⁓ Much easier there, much easier because not everybody's there for the game. It's just a public park in the in downtown and it's it's really cool. Lots of food trucks and ice cream and water fountains, splash pads. It it's a really great place. And there's a huge screen showing the soccer games. So tons of people, seas of people. And we were just, all right, let's go. So we split up. There's nine of us. We split up into three teams of three. And just a f a few highlights is number one, ⁓ I think it was fun to just watch our church just go for it. And and yeah, there was fear and intimidation. But that didn't stop anybody. Like everybody engaged and tried to pray for people and share the gospel. And I I I feel like it's new for a lot of our people. And that's understandable. And it's tough. It's really it can be a tough thing to do this cold like this. But ⁓ it was really cool to see that. One of the highlights was later in the night, ⁓ one of the people that was with me, ⁓ she was complaining of some back pain, and she has for a long time. And I've prayed for her before. But this time I felt led again, like, let's pray. And so I put my hand on her back and prayed. And by the end of the night, her this knot that was in her back and the pain that she has, ⁓ that she had was completely gone by the end of the night. And then next morning she texted the group and said, Guys, my pain is still completely gone. And she's been going to doctor's appointments and chiropractors and the whole thing for a long time and ⁓ and she's been she's been healed. And so I I actually texted her not long ago to see how she is and where she's at, if the pain came back or or not. But ⁓ that was really cool, a really sweet moment. And then ⁓ We actually got to engage with this guy who was vlogging on his YouTube. He has about twelve hundred followers or subscribers on YouTube. And ⁓ and I just saw him. I was like, What are you doing, man? And he was like, you know, I'm just, you know, vlogging. And I said, Great. Well, hey, do you mind if I pray for you on your vlog? Would that be cool? And he was like, Okay, sure. And so we engaged for fifteen, twenty minutes. I shared the gospel. I prayed for him a couple of times. And everybody on the channel, if they watch and he if he posts this and doesn't edit it out, ⁓ you know, will potentially hear the gospel. That's one thousand two hundred and fifty people. right there that could hear about Jesus ⁓ on his channel. So I thought that was a cool opportunity. You know, God has to move beyond that to to make sure that those people actually see it. But I'm praying that he would bless that. ⁓ yeah, so ⁓ I think there was other moments like Sal, our worship minister, he he said he had he got a word of knowledge for someone and went up to them and shared ⁓ what the what the word was a word of knowledge is from first Corinthians twelve where where Paul talks about prophecy and it's It's God giving you information about someone that you shouldn't know or couldn't know any other way. And you share that with someone and it's true. And it really opens their heart to receive the gospel and the love of Jesus. And he had one of those and it was powerful. This person was like crying. And and then a lot of people were looking for churches. We invited them to church and just, you know, it was just, it was great. Only good things came from it. And ⁓ the lots of seeds were planted. And at the very end, ⁓ got to share the gospel with this couple that seemed to be on a date. Felt led to give them some money. I gave them some money ⁓ that someone had given us to bless people with that night. So it wasn't like my own personal money. ⁓ but it was money I had queued up, ready to bless people with. And walked over to this couple, shared the money, shared the gospel with them. And halfway through the gospel I started talking about the wages of sin is death. ⁓ this guy cut me off. He's like, nah, you know what? We're good. I don't want to hear this and you know, here's your money back. Go bless somebody else, appreciate it, but we're good. And I just stopped and I'm like, okay, I in my mind I thought I could just be done right now. Or ⁓ I can really lean in here. And I just maybe it was the Lord, maybe it was my own flesh, but I was like, I'm leaning in. I said, Bro, you need to know that there will come a time when you will stand face to face with your maker. And we need to be living not just for this life, but for the next. And when we stand face to face, he will look at you and he will decide whether or not to let you in. With him forever to rule and reign on the earth or to go to hell. And that decision is going to be based on how you responded to Jesus and his death for you on a cross. And I you need to pray about that. You need to think about that. This life is not just about what you're doing right now. It's about what you're doing for eternity. and ⁓ you just need to think about that. And he goes, Okay. And I and I left. And I felt so grieved. I didn't feel rejected. I didn't feel like my my ego was hurt. I genuinely felt grieved that this guy stopped me in my tracks and rejected the gospel message as it was being preached. And one of the things I realized is like some are open and ready to receive. Some are curious and okay, we could talk about this. And then some are just not wanting it. They're just hardened and they don't want to hear it. And as hard as it is to just receive that and just say, okay, I I even feel it in my heart right now. I just like it's just sad because I know where those guys are going forever and ever. And it's on us. The the harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few. It's so true. Did you know that ninety-six percent of the church that would call themselves Christians right now, like like people who claim to be Christians, 96% of them don't actively share the gospel and share their faith. And in fact, the majority of millennials, that's my generation, they think it's immoral to evangelize. And it's this culture of subjectivity and plurality, and you can Believe what you want to believe. And so for us to come in and say, no, this is the way, this is the truth, it feels elitist and it feels immoral and and it's sad. And in the 4% that are actively sharing their faith, the majority of them have been saved for less than a year. Meaning that it's so fresh, their faith and their their love for Jesus, it's so fresh they just want to go share it, which tells me what happens when you get plugged into church activity is that your faith and your first love actually wanes. And this is what Jesus talked to the ⁓ church in Ephesus about. It's like, hey, you got some good doctrine, you're doing some good stuff, but you've forsook, you've forsaken, forsook your first love. Repent, return to what you were doing at first. What's Jesus saying? He's like, Yeah, remember when you first met me, how fresh it all was, and how much you loved me, how much, how grateful you were for the forgiveness of your sins. Return to that. Return to that. Be a baby Christian again. This is why Jesus said, become like a child. What do children do? They experience something great. And the first thing that they do is they go share with someone. They can't help it because they're kids. They're excited about something and it's just natural. And the joy of experiencing something is ultimately climaxed and peaked when it's shared with someone. This is what C.S. Lewis talked about that the enjoyment of something is not complete until it's shared with someone else. Think about it. You go and have an amazing meal at restaurant. And it's so good. And you eat it and you're like, man, this is so good. And you but like until you tell someone, and when you tell someone about it, it's like you're it's like you're doing the meal service. It's like that was so good, it has to be shared. This is what it's like to be a Christian and a disciple of Jesus. And unfortunately, ⁓ the majority of church and what church has produced are disciples who have good theology, but do not have first love for Jesus because Jesus is right theology. And because they don't have first love of Jesus, they don't go and share that love. And in fact, they've defined discipleship as growing deep in theology, scripture study, prayer, but not go growing immaturity as Jesus would define it, which is go and make disciples, teaching them to obey all that I've commanded you. And I think that we have a lot of people who are deep in theology, but disobedient. I would rather be obedient than disobedient. I'd rather be obedient than. And know my stuff, then dis than know my stuff and be disobedient. ⁓ and so I d gosh, I don't want to sound like I'm being judgy. ⁓ but I feel this in my spirit. I feel like the Lord is saying this ⁓ to me and to breakthrough about being a place that we don't just have deep doctrine or right doctrine, ⁓ because a lot of people will cloak disobedience and call it doctrine and say, well, I just want to know. I just want to grow deeper in my theology when when the pursuit of that can actually lead you away from the harvest and from being a laborer. And so I just I man, I just feel like so many of us need to put our Bibles down and actually go obey and share what we've learned already. And I think we want to grow in our knowledge of the word, but we're not willing to obey what we already know. And the most basic thing that we're called to do is make disciples. And so I want to close by just a few minutes talking about Matthew 28, because this was what Jesus told his disciples to do from the get-go. Like he's died, he rose again. And in light of the resurrection of Jesus, this is what you're supposed to do. You ever have something incredible happen to you? Or someone does something incredible and like you're like, what's next? Jesus gave us the what's next. He gave us on a platter. Here's what you are called to do next. So in Matthew 28, he comes to his disciples. It says in verse 16, now the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. That's hard to believe that some would doubt after seeing the risen Jesus. But hey, we're no better. We doubt, even though we've seen Jesus provide over and over and over again. We still doubt, right? We can worship and doubt at the same time, unfortunately. But Jesus is gracious. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Why does he start with that? Why does it so right next after that he says, Go therefore and make disciples? What does making disciples have to do with the authority that's been given to Jesus? Great question. There's questions underneath that question. Who had the authority before it was given to Jesus? Because if it's been given to Jesus, I mean someone had it. And that's the Father. He gave it to Jesus. But He gave it to him in light of his death and his resurrection. So what did his death accomplish that let the Father f give him full authority? Do you remember the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness? What was the temptation of Satan? Authority. Satan was like, I'll give you all authority. I'll give you the innate I'll give you the nations. I'll give you everything. Everybody will worship you. If you just bow down to me, I'll give you authority. Well, who is Satan to say, I'll give you that when he didn't nope, nope, he actually did have it. Rewind all the way back to the garden. one of the things, I think maybe the primary thing that happened in that garden when Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was they forfeited their own dominion over the earth and gave it to Satan. Satan didn't have it. God had given it to people. He has all authority and he delegated that authority to Adam and Eve to name the animals and to steward creation. And hey, have dominion. That's kingdom, that's authority language. Have dominion over The earth and Satan comes in and steals that dominion through lies about God's character, God's nature. And they they they actually are like, wow, that that sounds appealing. We're gonna take and eat of this tree. In the taking and eating of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they became independent of God and lost their authority God had given them and forfeited it to Satan himself. And so When Jesus in in Genesis 3:15, the promise is the offspring of of the woman will crush the head of the serpent and you will bruise his heel. What is the head? The head is a picture of authority. This is why Jesus Christ is the head of the church. It's the He's the authority over the church. Okay? So the head symbolizes authority. So when Jesus goes to the place of the skull in Galgotha and he dies, he's bruised on top of the head that he's crushing. This is why the cross is not just, ⁓ thanks for forgiving of my sins. It's it's a dismantling of the authority of Satan that he has had since Genesis chapter three. So when Jesus comes to them and says, All authority has been given to me, what does that mean? It means the Father has stolen the authority Satan has and given it back to the true Son of Man, the true God in the flesh. So Jesus is coming to them saying, Guys, nothing can stand in our way now. I have all authority and I'm Giving it to you to go and do this most important thing ever, which is what? Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Okay. Go isn't just everybody go to a foreign nation, third world country, and live in a village and share the gospel. Some might be called to that. But go is like an as you go. It's an everywhere you go, wherever you do, whatever you do, you're making disciples of all nations. Of all nations, right? And we see this fulfilled in Acts 2. All the nations come to Jerusalem for. The feast and the pa ⁓ the ⁓ for Pentecost and and the Holy Spirit pours out and all these different nations ⁓ they actually hear the gospel in their own language because of the power of the Holy Spirit. But he says, Go therefore, therefore, in light of the fact that I have all authority and have stolen it and taken it back from Satan, who took it in Genesis three, I have it now. And so, in light of my authority, in light in the foundation of me owning all things, having Nothing that's above me. I'm above all things. I have all authority in light of that. In my name, go and make disciples of all nations. Well, how do you make a disciple? Number one, you baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son, of the Holy Spirit. Okay, this isn't just like allegorical language. This literally means get them in the water. I do believe this means get them in the water. There's something that happens when you go in the water and you come out. What are you doing? One of the things you're doing, if not the main thing you're doing, is you're giving up your own authority over your life. And you're giving up the authority sin has in your life. You're giving up the authority Satan has in your life, and it's dying in the waters. And when you come out of the waters, you're saying, I am the new, and Jesus is my king, and I serve him the rest of my life. It's a dec declaration of allegiance when you get in the water. So he's saying rescue people from the dominion of darkness, from the dominion of Satan, rescue them and bring them underneath the authority of the sun. This is amazing. This is what Christianity is. It means you're giving up your own authority. You're saying no to the authority of Satan, the world, any attachments you have to the things of the world, you're saying they have no more authority over me. They don't get to tell me what I think, what I do, where I go, how I feel. Those have no hold on me. I am the Lord's and the Lord is mine. That's what's happening when you get in the waters and when you're baptized and you come out. The second part is teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you. Okay. Obedience. It's not just get in the water and call yourself a Christian. It's a lifestyle of learning to obey all that Jesus has taught. Well, what has Jesus taught? How to pray, how to heal, how to cast out demons, how to handle relationships, how to handle finances. And then how did Jesus teach those people? How did he teach? Well, he did stand up and teach, but who's he speaking to now? He's speaking to the eleven disciples, just the eleven. It doesn't say he's talking, remember it says, and the eleven disciples went to Galilee. He's saying, Hey, what I've done for you in teaching you the ways of the kingdom, go teach others. How did Jesus teach them? Yes, he stood up in front of crowds and taught, but specifically with the eleven, he invited them in close relationship and said, Do what I do, love what I love, hate what I hate. But he didn't just tell them that. They observed it. They watched him and they caught the vision of the kingdom. And he's saying, Go do the same. This is awesome. And at the end he says, and behold, I am with you always to the end of the age. So discipleship is rescuing people from the dominion of darkness and Satan and bringing them into the kingdom of the beloved Son. And then once they're in the kingdom, you actually show them how to navigate life as a disciple of Jesus underneath the authority of King Jesus. And there's a promise at the end: I am with you always to the end of the age. Jesus, in light of his authority, is Gives them a command and then follows the command up with a promise that as you go about doing this, I am with you. I think it's important to note that Jesus didn't say, make sure you pray a lot, because I'm with you, or make sure to read your scriptures, and I am with you. They didn't even have the Bible. They had the Old Testament, but not everybody had it. It was in synagogues only, mate, really. So Jesus said that you will experience my presence. As you commit to the work of making disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them. And so, brother, sister, if you want to experience greater measures of the presence of Jesus in your life, in your heart today, do not delay. Commit to being a person who will make disciples, who will baptize people, and who will teach them how to obey Jesus. Commit in your heart right now and then ask God for a name, a person. Ask God to bring you people that you can disciple. He will do it. He's eager because he's not had many people that will come to him and say, Who do you want me to disciple? Who can I pour into? Who can I lead to Christ? Who do you want me to share the gospel with today? When we come to him with a heart committed to that, he strongly supports us. He breathes on it. And we encounter greater measures of his presence as we go. I I will just testify to this myself. At the end of our 10-day fast we did as a church, ⁓ I met up with it I think this was day eight. I b I believe it was day eight of our ten day fast. ⁓ and it was a few weeks ago at this point and I was meeting with a friend of mine who I've been discipling and ⁓ I I led him I I led him to the Lord probably 2025. I think it was like summer/slash fall, fall, fall of 2025 is when it was. I invited them to come pray with me and just it was awesome. It was beautiful how it all went down. But we're meeting at this Chick-fil-A. And ⁓ you know, I was feeling feeling it. I was feeling pretty good. Okay. When you fast for extended periods of time, whether you go completely no food and only water, or you just eat a little bit, like there's a c there comes a there comes a time in your fast where you hit a sweet spot and you just feel like So amazing. and and but at but really through the fast at this point I hadn't felt much of God's presence. Honestly, I felt just like I wasn't experiencing anything. But then when I got to the sweet spot where I my body was like not needing food and it was just it was just the sweet spot. I felt like I was beginning to experience the presence of God, but it didn't come as I thought. I thought I was gonna be in prayer and just get downloads and just get exp like. Bombed by the Holy Ghost in times of prayer. And that's when I was going to experience the increase in God's presence in my life. And that's not where it came. Do you know where it came from? As I was having meetings that were discipleship related. When I was discipling people and meeting with them, that's when I was encountering the presence of God the most. So I'm sitting across from the table from my friend, and we're talking about his life and he struggles. And I'm just I'm listening and I'm talking, and the Holy Spirit's giving me things to say. And then we, long story short, I end up praying for him to receive the love of the Father. And he's just like crying and snotty right there at the table. And I'm like, ⁓ my gosh, like this is it, man. Like this is it. When we commit to this, then we will experience greater measures of God's presence in our life as we go and make disciples who make disciples. There's nothing like it. I mean, you you can experience the presence of Jesus in prayer, and there's there's ⁓ man, it's so beautiful. And then you want to increase that is take that presence, take that, that, that, that, ⁓ I don't know, that kingdom that you're encountering in prayer. And you walk in that kingdom as you make disciples, and you'll encounter greater measures of God's presence. So if you're sitting there and you're like, man, I wish I could experience greater measures of God's presence in my life, ask Him to bring you someone to disciple, meet with them weekly, and then just share with them what God has taught you. It's not that complicated. The most the the the biggest obstacle to you going and doing this right now is not a lack of content. It's not a lack of curriculum. It's not knowing not I don't know what to do. It's just you and your heart committing that I'm going to give my life away for this work because this is what Jesus has commanded us to. And I believe Jesus is coming back soon. There's no time to waste. The harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few. Will you commit to being a laborer? Most people who claim to be Christians, and I'm not saying they're not, but most people who would say I'm a Christian are not laboring for the gospel in the ways the disciples were called to by Jesus. In the New Testament. Let's get after it. The harvest is plentiful. The laborers are few. Will you do it with me? If you want to join Breakthrough Church and help us do this, please come. And this fall, I believe we're gonna start a nine-month-long discipleship training program. I don't know if we're gonna call it that. I don't know what we're gonna call it, but the goal is that we would come out of this time with hearts that burn. minds that are renewed, ⁓ eyes that are opened, and hands that are useful and powerful for the kingdom of God. I believe that God's gonna set us on fire in this nine-month time. I'm not gonna be able to do it. The Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, he's gonna have to do it. And I believe he will. But if you want to join me, text me. If you want to quote unquote unquote, like Paul said, follow me as I follow Christ. Let's get after it, guys. I'm eager, I'm hungry. I want more. I want to I want more of God I want to see him use me more. I don't want to be complacent and wait around for some stuff to happen around me and for the other people to do it. If not me, then who? We have to have that mindset. If not me, then who? Therefore, I gotta go. So go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all that Jesus has commanded you. And behold, guys, Jesus is with you always to the end. of the age. Amen. ⁓ all right, guys.
