  1. You have your Bibles. If you don't, that's OK, but if

  2. you have them, turn to Isaiah Chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  3. As we think about lighting the prophecy or the hope candle, it

  4. made sense to me that we look to the Old Testament.

  5. Then we go back to the book of Isaiah.

  6. And so there is a thrilling passage in Isaiah Chapter 9 that

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  7. is often read around Christmas time, and I know that it will

  8. help us better understand our theme of hope or prophecy.

  9. In the midst of Isaiah 9, the Kingdom of Judah is in dark

  10. days. The Kingdom of Israel has just

  11. been captured by the Assyrians, takes place in 722 BC, and

  12. Isaiah is ministering to King Ahaz and the people of Judah who

  13. are wondering, what are we going to do?

  14. Because the Assyrian threat still exists.

  15. They're still concerned about what's going to happen.

  16. And it's in the midst of this that in Chapter 7, God gives the

  17. nation of Judah a sign, says a virgin will conceive and bear a

  18. son, and you will call his name Emmanuel, that eventually a

  19. child is going to be born who is going to provide hope and

  20. salvation for God's people. And that's what they have to

  21. look forward to. And in the midst of this chaos,

  22. this sorrow, this gloom, we also have these comforting words,

  23. this beautiful prophecy in Isaiah Chapter 9 verses one

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  24. through 7. Let me read it for us, says, But

  25. there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish in the former

  26. time. He brought into contempt the

  27. land of Zebulun and the land of NAFTA lie, but in the latter

  28. time He has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond

  29. the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

  30. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great

  31. light. Those who dwelt in a land of

  32. deep darkness, On them has light shone.

  33. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy.

  34. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest as they are

  35. glad when they divide the spoil For the yoke of his burden, and

  36. the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor you have

  37. broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping

  38. warrior in battle tumult, and every garment rolled in blood

  39. will be burned as fuel for the fire.

  40. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the

  41. government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be

  42. called. Wonderful counsellor, mighty

  43. God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of the increase of his

  44. government and of peace. There will be no end on the

  45. throne of David and over his Kingdom to establish it and to

  46. uphold it with justice and with righteousness.

  47. From this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the

  48. Lord of hosts will do this. This evening, very briefly,

  49. we're going to talk about two items that are raised here, 2

  50. important truths. First, this passage talks about

  51. our King, that our King is someone we can hope in.

  52. And in the midst of this description of King Jesus,

  53. you'll notice his humanity and deity on full display.

  54. We see this right in the opening line.

  55. We see his humanity in this child being born, this son of a

  56. virgin, Emmanuel, God with us. But we also see his deity as the

  57. Son is given. The Father sends the Son to be

  58. the savior of the world. And so we see both humanity and

  59. deity here. And then we have these four

  60. beautiful names, right? We have wonderful counselor that

  61. this individual is coming into the world is going to be the

  62. greatest teacher, full of the greatest wisdom, far beyond

  63. anything else that the world has ever seen or known.

  64. This counselor, this teacher is going to tell us that there is

  65. strength and weakness, that the greatest of all is the servant,

  66. that there's no greater love than someone lay down his life

  67. for his friends. He reveals to us this totally

  68. upside down Kingdom that is foreign to the wisdom of this

  69. world. He's our wonderful counselor.

  70. We also see that He is our mighty God, that He is the

  71. fullness of God in bodily form, that He is the Word that became

  72. flesh and dwelt among us, that He is God the Son, fullness of

  73. God, and helpless babe, as the modern hymn puts it, in Christ

  74. alone. What a beautiful line.

  75. We also see this third name, which is perhaps the most

  76. shocking because often we don't associate this title with Jesus.

  77. He is everlasting father. Isn't that interesting?

  78. So isn't God the Father, this talking about God the Son as our

  79. everlasting father, that there's something paternal about our

  80. relationship with Jesus as our king, as our forever king,

  81. right? He's everlasting.

  82. It's personal. There's intimacy.

  83. Jesus relates to us as His dear children.

  84. There is such a close connection that we are able to have with

  85. our Savior in the midst of His great power and might which are

  86. on full display. We also see this tenderness as

  87. our dear Shepherd. And then the fourth name we see

  88. is our Prince of Peace. I want to read for you not to

  89. steal Pastor Brighton's Thunder, but we'll hear from this passage

  90. next week. I don't want to spoil too much,

  91. but Micah 5, verses four and five, listen to this.

  92. And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the

  93. Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God, and they

  94. will dwell secure for now. He shall be great to the ends of

  95. the earth, and He shall be their peace.

  96. Peace is a person. We often think of peace as a

  97. lack or an absence of war and a fighting, but the reality is our

  98. greatest need for peace is reconciliation to God.

  99. We need peace with God and through faith we are justified.

  100. According to Romans 5, we are brought back to peace with God

  101. and our Lord Jesus Christ, and He allows us then to as much as

  102. it depends on us to live at peace with all people.

  103. He's our Prince of peace. So we see this beautiful

  104. description of our King, but we also see these qualities, these

  105. characteristics of His Kingdom. We don't have time to look at

  106. all of them in depth, but did you notice this description of

  107. this Kingdom? Do you notice that it's upon His

  108. shoulder? He's not a lazy king.

  109. He's not a king who's in it for himself.

  110. He is the one who upholds the entire Kingdom with the word of

  111. his power. It all rests on him.

  112. He bears the burden. Do you notice it's a Kingdom of

  113. peace? That it is eternal, not just

  114. geographically, but in relation to time, covers the whole earth,

  115. and it will last forever. And I love this.

  116. It's a Kingdom where justice and righteousness reign, that Jesus

  117. is the perfect king. He is just and perfect.

  118. And so that's the type of Kingdom that is already among us

  119. today. But it's also a Kingdom that we

  120. can look forward to in the future when Jesus comes back at

  121. the second Advent. You know, Christmas is a time of

  122. joy. You can also be a time of

  123. sorrow. True, as we mourn sadness, as we

  124. think about the difficulties and challenges that this life

  125. brings. But in the midst of this, my

  126. prayer for us tonight. So we would look to Jesus that

  127. we would recognize his purpose in coming.

  128. Later on in Isaiah, he's going to be described as a man of

  129. sorrows. He's going to be described as

  130. someone who was stricken by God and afflicted, described as

  131. someone who bore our grief and carried our sorrows, that the

  132. Lord will lay on him the iniquity of us all.

  133. And so whether you're coming in tonight and into this Advent

  134. season with joy, I, I hope that's true.

  135. Or even if there's sorrow, that's OK because Jesus came to

  136. experience joy and sorrow for us so that we can experience an end

  137. of sorrow when he comes to establish his Kingdom forever.

  138. There's a final enemy according to First Corinthians 15, that

  139. Jesus will defeat when he returns.

  140. And that final enemy is death. Praise God, be no more tears,

  141. sadness, sorrow, pain, suffering.

  142. No more death. And so as we begin this

  143. celebration of Advent, we do so as those who have hope, because

  144. Christ has already come and made a payment for our sins, and he

  145. is risen against that. We too may walk in the newness

  146. of life, but we're also able to look ahead to the future with

  147. great hopeful anticipation that when Jesus comes back, he's

  148. going to right every wrong. He's going to make all things

  149. new. And so whether you're

  150. experiencing joy or sorrow, ultimately we can have hope in

  151. our king and in his forever Kingdom.

  152. Let's pray. God, we thank you for this

  153. beautiful passage as we kick off Advent.

  154. We're so grateful for this opportunity to celebrate

  155. together. God, I pray that as we even

  156. decorate the church, as we build anticipation for Advent, God,

  157. that you would be with us. May we rejoice with those who

  158. rejoice and weep with those who weep.

  159. God, I pray that as we navigate this time of year, in the midst

  160. of the busyness and the crazy schedules, God, I pray that we

  161. would be able to pause and reflect on our King.

  162. We thank you so much for King Jesus.

  163. We also pray, God, that as we journey through Advent, as we

  164. celebrate the first coming of Jesus, that we would recognize

  165. two things. One, that Jesus came ultimately

  166. to die for our sins and to rise again.

  167. You got to pray that we would also recognize that the second

  168. Advent is coming. We don't know when, but we can

  169. look forward to it with hopeful anticipation that King Jesus

  170. will return. He will establish the throne of

  171. David forever, and we will forever be with him face to

  172. face, and that death will be defeated.

  173. We thank you, We pray these things in His precious name,

  174. Amen.
