  1. We've been working our way slowly and methodically through

  2. the Lord's Prayer for weeks now, and we're now in stage four of

  3. four. The prayer can be divided into 4

  4. sections. Talk first about the invocation.

  5. We pray to a loving and able father.

  6. The second section has to do with prayer requests or

  7. petitions about God. We start with God's Kingdom and

  8. honour and name and agenda. His will.

  9. And you move into the third section, petitions about our own

  10. needs, our needs for daily provisions, our need for a.

  11. Pardon in the Gospel. And so in our need for

  12. protection against our enemies, our own sinful desires, the

  13. world. And the devil.

  14. The fourth section is not in the main block of text in your

  15. Bibles, but is often in the footnote of your Bible, the

  16. section we call the Doxology. The doxology for Lion is the

  17. Kingdom and the Power and the glory, forever and ever.

  18. Amen. So we'll talk a little bit about

  19. why it's down in the footnote later, but I just want to begin

  20. with a word of introduction about what that churchy word

  21. means. What, after all, is a doxology?

  22. Doxology. The roots of the word are

  23. actually helpful in this case. The roots have to do with glory

  24. and word. A word of glory or a word of

  25. praise. A doxology.

  26. Holy Scripture is punctuated through the whole Bible, Old and

  27. New Testament, with songs of praise, brief words of praise.

  28. Often in poetry, the definition of a doxology is usually a brief

  29. word of praise. Perhaps you're used to singing a

  30. hymn called the doxology. You notice there's just one

  31. verse. It's not a a.

  32. Long thing and it's. Oriented to praise.

  33. The Lord. One of my favorite passages in

  34. what I've read, and I've read a lot of one of my heroes, CS

  35. Lewis, one of my favorite passages has to do with him

  36. talking about what praise is. And what it isn't?

  37. And he shares his journey, discovering more and more about

  38. what praise is. And I want to introduce this

  39. sermon by sharing some of his words with you, some of his

  40. journey with you. It can be easy to think of

  41. praise as mere compliment. I like your shoes.

  42. I like your hair. It can also be a way to kind of

  43. think, you know, what kind of God is this?

  44. Is he insecure? Is he someone who just needs

  45. compliments all the time? Is he a narcissist?

  46. Oh, God, you're so great. You're so lovely, You're so

  47. wise. So it's a a journey to for Louis

  48. to talk about growing in his idea of praise beyond mere

  49. compliment of someone to a deep and welling appreciation for

  50. someone or something. As he goes through this section

  51. that I will share some of with with you this morning, he he

  52. goes through several different stages.

  53. First, he notices that our enjoyment of things tends to

  54. almost always overflow into praise.

  55. What? Does that mean?

  56. Let me illustrate. Let's just imagine for a second.

  57. You're going to hate me for this, but let's just imagine for

  58. a. 2nd that you have in your possession an award-winning

  59. chocolate chip cookie. It's perfect in every way.

  60. Perfect temperature, perfect size.

  61. Perfect texture. It's perfect in every way.

  62. And when you enjoy this, you don't just nonchalantly,

  63. hopefully just cram that thing in your mouth and gulp down some

  64. milk and just be like, OK, what's?

  65. Next I'm leaving no most. People, they actually slow down,

  66. they chew more slowly, They want to feel the textures in their

  67. mouth. They want to experience what it

  68. feels like to go down their throat.

  69. And you know what? They make noises like this

  70. yummy. The enjoyment of this good, this

  71. goody, overflows into praise. We may start talking.

  72. About who made it. And how they got the secret

  73. recipe from your dead aunt or wherever it came down to you

  74. from this award. Wedding cookie needs to be

  75. praised in order for us to complete our enjoyment.

  76. It just it just. Happens.

  77. Enjoyment overflows into. Praise, Lewis says.

  78. The world rings with praise lovers praising one another,

  79. readers praising their favorite poets, walkers praising.

  80. The countryside players. Praise praising their favorite

  81. game. You hear praise of the weather,

  82. praise of wines, praise of dishes, actors, cars, horses,

  83. colleges, countries, historical personages, children, flowers,

  84. mountains, rare stamps, rare beetles.

  85. Even sometimes, and this is my favorite part, even sometimes,

  86. politicians or scholars. No offense to the scholars in

  87. the room. CS Lewis himself was a scholar.

  88. He's taken a stab of his own self.

  89. Right there the. World rings with praise of

  90. these. Things enjoyment overflows into

  91. praise. His second observation are two

  92. sides of the same coin. He's noticed throughout his life

  93. that it's the humble people that praise the most.

  94. Humble people tend to well up with appreciation and want to

  95. share it with others. The flip side is the snobs find

  96. fault with everything, even things that are good.

  97. They detect deficiency and they want to point it out.

  98. They want to share that with others.

  99. They want others to know that their tastes are so refined that

  100. they're not going to be duped as something by something as simple

  101. as the world's perfect chocolate chip cookie.

  102. They find fault with everything. I had not noticed how the

  103. humblest and at the same. Time most balanced minds.

  104. Praise most, while the cranks, misfits and malcontents praise

  105. least. He goes down a little further

  106. and says. Praise seems to be inner health

  107. made audible. Inner health made audible.

  108. You also notice that we can't help but share our praise as a

  109. factor of our enjoyment with other people.

  110. We invite others to praise what we like.

  111. Have you noticed this? Just as men spontaneously praise

  112. whatever they value, so they spontaneously urge us to join

  113. them in praising it. They say things like isn't she

  114. lovely? Wasn't it glorious?

  115. Don't you think that was magnificent last move?

  116. Our enjoyment is actually incomplete unless we do this.

  117. We. Feel a little bit.

  118. Frustrated, a little pent up if we can't express ourselves and

  119. share it with others. One of the most beautiful places

  120. I've ever. Been in my entire life is

  121. Yosemite Valley. I've been a lot of beautiful

  122. places. If I want to think about

  123. something beautiful besides Deidre, I think about Yosemite

  124. Valley. I love it.

  125. So much. You can imagine the rock

  126. formations and the. Waterfalls and the Meadow and

  127. the river and you're just like, how is this place here on earth?

  128. How could Eden have been any better?

  129. You want to stop by the side of the road, you want to see, you

  130. want to praise, you want to take pictures, you want to share it

  131. with others. And if you can't, then you

  132. actually feel frustrated, Lewis writes.

  133. I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise

  134. not merely expresses, but completes.

  135. Our enjoyment. Praise is it's appointed

  136. consummation. It's not out of compliments that

  137. lovers keep telling one another. How beautiful they are.

  138. Their delight is actually incomplete until it is

  139. expressed. It's frustrating to have

  140. discovered a new author and not be.

  141. Able to tell anyone how good he is.

  142. Or to come suddenly at the turn of a road upon some mountain

  143. valley of unexpected grandeur, and then to have to keep silent

  144. because the people. With you in the.

  145. Car care no more for it. Than for a tin can in a ditch.

  146. It's. Frustrating to hear a good joke

  147. and find no one to share it with.

  148. Our enjoyment. Of something is incomplete

  149. without praise. And so he goes on to talk about

  150. how. Important it is for us to

  151. understand. That the praise of God is not

  152. because you have a a needy, insecure God who needs

  153. compliments our praise of God. Is an invitation.

  154. To the bliss of enjoying that who is most.

  155. Beautiful, true, holy and good. And in our finest moments of

  156. most transcendent bliss in this life, they're just mere glimpses

  157. of what is possible for a fully sanctified person in the

  158. presence of God to experience the bliss.

  159. Of God himself, and so the Church.

  160. When coming to the end of the Lord's Prayer and our Lord.

  161. Sort of abruptly. Ends it with a prayer of

  162. protection from the devil. The Church isn't seeking to

  163. improve Holy Scripture with this doxology, but rather they want

  164. to use the. Prayer in public worship.

  165. And they want to express an exuberant moment, a note of

  166. praise at the end of the prayer. So very early, very early in the

  167. manuscript tradition, we see this doxology.

  168. In the text. So that may be used for public

  169. worship for the church and its corporate prayers to end on a

  170. note. Of praise to thine.

  171. For thine is the. Glory and the Kingdom and the

  172. power forever and ever and ever. So we're going to dig in there a

  173. little bit, ask some some questions of the text.

  174. Try to learn more. About what this actually means

  175. for us. We'll do this today and next

  176. Sunday and the Sunday after and I got.

  177. To divide it in. Certain places, but these three

  178. make a set A. Set devoted to understanding

  179. this. Doxology.

  180. So first question in your bulletin outline is why?

  181. Why do we praise? Why do we praise?

  182. I have several reasons for you. For why we.

  183. Praise one of them first, and perhaps the most obvious reason

  184. we praise God is that we owe it to him.

  185. Don't we don't Don't we owe a debt of gratitude to our Maker?

  186. Don't we owe a debt of gratitude to the author of the.

  187. Creation that we enjoy. Don't we owe a debt of

  188. gratitude, words of honor and praise to the one we claim?

  189. If we're Christians has redeemed our soul, don't we owe a debt of

  190. gratitude to someone who will give us the hope of glory to

  191. live with ever? With him, someday we owe praise

  192. to God, don't we now? That's true.

  193. That's good. We got a hearty Amen and I he'll

  194. say hearty Amen. As well.

  195. To that we owe. God glory Jesus.

  196. After healing a group of lepers, they all go.

  197. Only one comes back to say thank you and Jesus said hey, weren't

  198. there, weren't there? Like nine others.

  199. Where are the rest of you guys? We owe a debt of gratitude to

  200. our Lord, our Healer. Our Savior.

  201. Our Maker. However, there's more.

  202. To it than this isn't there. And we experienced this in our

  203. relationships. Too.

  204. You know, it's it's Mother's Day.

  205. And I technically owe my mother a debt.

  206. Of gratitude I should. Send her a card, but my mom

  207. would probably rather not receive.

  208. My. Card if I just knew that I was.

  209. Doing it out of. Some sense of duty or some sense

  210. of obligation. Similarly, my wife I owe a debt

  211. of honor and gratitude and and she would probably not like.

  212. On our. Anniversary to feel like I was

  213. just doing my duty for her to give her a card or to take.

  214. Her out to dinner. So though our first reason is

  215. that we owe our Maker this debt of honor and gratitude.

  216. There's there's more. To it, And this is back to that

  217. introduction from CS Lewis, that if we truly delight in a

  218. relationship, in a mother or in a spouse or a husband, whatever

  219. have you, then we can't help but praise and adore.

  220. And give expression to our adoration.

  221. It is the consummation. Of our enjoyment of that person.

  222. So why do we praise? It's because we can't help it.

  223. It's the consummation of our joy.

  224. But the third reason, and I get this from Ji Packer in his book

  225. On the Lord's Prayer, he talks about a feedback loop, a

  226. positive feedback loop between petition, which is the hard work

  227. of prayer, and the praise which lifts us up and gives us fuel to

  228. pray. So if you think about that in

  229. any relationship that makes sense.

  230. If I have to ask you for something, I'm a.

  231. Little bit nervous? What if you say no?

  232. Well, I don't. Really like rejection.

  233. I'm going to go ahead and ask. You it's going.

  234. To be a little bit uphill, but then you say yes, or you answer

  235. my prayer or my petition in an even better way.

  236. And I'm like, thank you, that was awesome.

  237. I love you. And I feel this boost of energy,

  238. this fuel. That comes from the praise.

  239. Next time. When I need to.

  240. Ask you again, I have a memory of how it went before and so I'm

  241. less scared. Perhaps I can ask again, you

  242. answer my. Prayer in a way that I.

  243. Was even better. Than I can imagine.

  244. And I have even more reasons to praise.

  245. And so Packer talks about this. Being a a loop.

  246. A cycle that builds and builds upon itself.

  247. The hard work of Petition is buoyed and powered by.

  248. Praise. I think he's right.

  249. So why do we praise? Did you catch?

  250. These Why do we? Praise first, we owe it better.

  251. We can't help it. It's the completion of our joy.

  252. And 3rd because. Praise powers A.

  253. Healthy spiritual life. In our second section.

  254. This morning I'd like to talk about the what?

  255. For thine is the Kingdom in the power and the glory forever.

  256. Amen. I mean, you need to divide it

  257. somewhere. Let's take Kingdom in.

  258. Power this morning. Kingdom and power, they kind of

  259. go together. You can't really have a Kingdom

  260. without power. A Kingdom is a type of dominion,

  261. a type of rule. And interestingly, one of the

  262. most exciting things I learned this week is that it's likely

  263. that the early church brought this doxology, nestled it under

  264. the Lord's Prayer, got this doxology from another place in

  265. Holy Scripture, the Scripture that Connor read.

  266. This morning from us. From Chronicles 1st.

  267. Chronicles, chapter 29. Notice the echoes of the Lord's

  268. Prayer. Notice how this text reminds you

  269. of the Lord's Prayer. And notice again you could

  270. circle or underline how many times he's talking about Kingdom

  271. and might and. Power, therefore David, King

  272. David, bless the Lord in the presence of all the assembly.

  273. And David said, Blessed are you, O Lord the God of Israel, our

  274. Father. Forever and ever.

  275. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness. And the power, and the glory.

  276. And the victory? And the majesty for all that is

  277. in the heavens and in the earth is yours.

  278. Yours is the Kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as Head

  279. above all. Both riches and honors come from

  280. you, and you rule over all in your hand or power.

  281. And might and in your hand. It is to make great and to give

  282. strength to all. And now we thank you, our God,

  283. and praise your glorious name. King David is welling up with

  284. appreciation for the King of Kings.

  285. You know being king is a stressful job, you think?

  286. You want that job. But as Coldplay sings, who would

  287. ever want to be king? It's not that great.

  288. Of a job. So you have King David, this

  289. guy, he, you know, he has this stressful job and he takes great

  290. comfort in his faith from the sovereignty of a king.

  291. Who is sovereign over all? We're going to talk about how.

  292. The sovereignty of God, though, that can make our knees shake

  293. and we wonder what He's doing at times.

  294. It's actually the source of our greatest comfort and our

  295. greatest joy. Friends trust me.

  296. You do not want. To live in a world with a God

  297. that isn't sovereign, you don't want to live in that world.

  298. And even though. It seems like our suffering is

  299. harder if we believe in the sovereignty of God.

  300. It's actually the only way through.

  301. You must cling to His dominion, His.

  302. Sovereignty. His might if you're going to

  303. have any hope. For the adversity.

  304. That you're going through, it's interesting to think about God's

  305. sovereignty, to think about his power over it all.

  306. It's interesting to think. About how?

  307. The Lord Jesus himself fulfills. These things as the King of

  308. Kings and I want to just read to you.

  309. From Ephesians. Chapter 1, verses 16 through 22.

    Ephesians 1:16–22

  310. That the first chapter of Ephesians.

  311. Is amazing. Big long thing of praise.

  312. He's just just just welling up and spouting all of his praises.

  313. For God, For his. Glory.

  314. In the gospel, all the things that he's done.

  315. For us are spiritual blessings in Christ.

  316. He's just, he's just pop. The Apostle Paul's just just.

  317. Welling up and expressing these things.

  318. Verse 16 says this. I, Paul, do not cease to give

  319. thanks for you. Remembering you in my.

  320. Prayers. That the God of our Lord Jesus

  321. Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of.

  322. Wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him having the.

  323. Eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the

  324. hope to which. He has called you Paul saying.

  325. I think about y'all. All the time.

  326. I have a major prayer request for y'all.

  327. All the time. It's that the Spirit of God will

  328. make very real to you what the hope.

  329. To which he's called you. You need hope.

  330. I'm praying for you to have hope.

  331. That hope is coming from the gospel, that you may know the

  332. hope to which he has called you. What are the riches of his

  333. glorious inheritance in the Saints?

  334. And he's going to start talking about.

  335. Power and might. You ready?

  336. Verse 19. And what is the immeasurable

  337. greatness of His power toward us to believe according to the

  338. workings of His great? Might.

  339. Now here's the clincher, verse 20, that he worked in Christ

  340. when he raised him from the dead.

  341. And seated him. At his right hand, in the

  342. heavenly places, far above all. Rule and authority every name

  343. that is named, not only in this. Age, but also in the one to come

  344. and he put. All things under his.

  345. Feet and gave him as head. Over all things to the Church,

  346. which is His body, the fullness of him who.

  347. Fills All in all, wow, wow. King of Kings, Lord of Lords.

  348. There's a power working in us. We were singing about it earlier

  349. this morning. We were singing about that power

  350. working in us. That is the same power that

  351. raised Christ from the dead, sat him on the throne, the King of

  352. kings, the Lord of Lords. Thine is the Kingdom and the

  353. power. This gives us tremendous hope.

  354. And this is the hope. That we desperately need.

  355. That informs our reality whether things are going really, really

  356. well or things are going really, really, really bad.

  357. I love this song. More modern song where the the

  358. writer is talking about our need to praise God in the good times.

  359. And in the bad times? This songwriter will actually

  360. Nestle the stanzas like this. Good.

  361. Bad. Then does it again.

  362. Good. Bad bottom line.

  363. I'm going to praise him. I'm going to praise him.

  364. Maybe you know this song. If you don't, you can look it

  365. up. Blessed be your.

  366. Name in the land. That is plentiful where your

  367. streams of abundance flow in Yosemite Valley.

  368. I added that. That's not there.

  369. Blessed be your name in. Yosemite next stanza.

  370. Blessed be your name. When I'm found in the desert

  371. place. When I walk through the

  372. wilderness. Blessed be your name.

  373. Poet toggles back to. The good things now.

  374. He's on the beach, apparently. Blessed be your name when the

  375. sun. Is shining down on me.

  376. When the world's all as it should be, kids are building

  377. sand. Castles, I've got a refreshing

  378. drink. I can feel the.

  379. Sun on my face, in the sand between my toes.

  380. Blessed be your name. And then he's going to go right

  381. back to the hard thing. Blessed be your name.

  382. On the road marked with suffering, though there's pain

  383. in the offering. Blessed be your name, my

  384. friends. That's what the worshipping

  385. community is doing, whether all is as it should.

  386. Be or whether we're. There's pain in the offering.

  387. We are together, rejoicing with those rejoice, rejoicing and

  388. mourning with those who are. Mourning, praising.

  389. God, who is working out a grand story of redemption far greater

  390. than anything that we can see or understand.

  391. So glad the book of Job is in our Bible.

  392. What would your Bible be without the book of Job?

  393. It'd be missing something, and after Job and his wife have lost

  394. everything. His wife is in despair, isn't

  395. she? In.

  396. Despair, she cries out. Are you still holding on to your

  397. integrity? Curse God and die, Joe replied.

  398. Job replied and asked her shall we accept good from God and not

  399. and not trouble in? All of this job.

  400. Did not sin in what he said though.

  401. He slay me. I will hope in him and present

  402. my case before him. He clings in faith to a God He

  403. assures greater than his circumstances.

  404. And that's what we have to do too, no matter what we're going

  405. through, good or bad. Some applications for us.

  406. Before we conclude, let's have one main application for us

  407. today, thinking about how the Bible sort of punctuated with

  408. praise, how it's. A kind of musical.

  409. I don't know if you guys like musicals or not.

  410. Some of you love them. Some of you are like, oh boy, I

  411. can just hear a song coming. The Bible's punctuated with

  412. these these songs of praise, whether.

  413. It's in a a story. You can think about the songs of

  414. the Advent narratives. Were there those songs of praise

  415. in the Psalm book in the middle of your Bible?

  416. Lots of examples. So as I was.

  417. Thinking about this, I was like, well, that should be how our

  418. lives are. Our lives should just be kind of

  419. punctuated with these brief songs of praise.

  420. In your daily life, there should be just these moments of.

  421. Praise where our appreciation. Wells up and maybe those are

  422. native to your own heart and you can kind of just say them

  423. extemporaneously or maybe you need help from from your

  424. favorite praise. Songs deploy doxology.

  425. Deploy doxology. My kids at this point might be
