  1. As we come to our conclusion of our seventeen week series on the

  2. Lord's Prayer, as some of you are thinking, that is 16 more in

  3. a row than I've ever heard on the Lord's Prayer, and that's

  4. OK. That's OK.

  5. I'm also aware that the Lord is warning us about wordiness this

  6. morning as we come into this final message in this series.

  7. All joking aside, I've enjoyed very much engaging with many of

  8. you about this series, and some of the most striking comments to

  9. me have been from people who have, who are now or have in

  10. their past been going through very deep water, whether that's

  11. challenging trials or the waters of grief.

  12. How important this prayer is to your devotional life and to your

  13. processing of your grief, really to clinging to the Lord and

  14. faith. And that's what we're going to

  15. talk about this morning. I thought that it would be good

  16. for us to do a review, sort of fly over of the whole series

  17. this morning and then try to land the plane as we conclude on

  18. this last and very pregnant word.

  19. Amen. What does that mean?

  20. We'll talk about that, but first of all, to remind us of why we

  21. even did this in the first place.

  22. In my beginnings as lead pastor at UCC, I wanted to start off in

  23. the spring giving series on the basics.

  24. And for centuries, the church has used the Apostles Creed, the

  25. 10 Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer as a very important way

  26. to teach the basics of biblical Christianity and deep

  27. discipleship. You can think of this, these

  28. three also as a way of a believing, a way of behaving and

  29. a way of communing, communing with our Lord, things that are

  30. very important for our Christian journey with God.

  31. Again, to review, we looked very carefully at the opening our

  32. Father in heaven. We spent several weeks just on

  33. talking about what this means that the word father implies a

  34. family. It is a word of family and it

  35. also implies if you are going to learn about Christianity, the

  36. Christian God, which is the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and

  37. the Holy Spirit. And the only way we can have a

  38. relationship with God and call him Father is through a theology

  39. of adoption. Made possible because of God's

  40. will, made possible because of the mission, the person and the

  41. work of his Son, Jesus Christ. Also, God, the God man by the

  42. Holy Spirit, who is called the Spirit of adoption.

  43. So we really focused in on that first word and talked about

  44. prayer being a family affair. We cannot even pray without the

  45. good news of the gospel rescuing us from ourselves in order to

  46. restore relationship with God. Focused on Ephesians to build

  47. out that theology. We also consider how important

  48. this first word is, which is a plural possessive pronoun that

  49. reminds us that we are a part of a family, That indeed God is not

  50. just adopting us as individuals, but he's adopting a whole group

  51. of people to be related to one another as brothers and sisters

  52. in Christ his church. Very important to remember that

  53. we pray this not only as individuals but as family

  54. members of God's family. We also looked at this term

  55. Father and continue to think about what this means with this

  56. close association with heaven, our Father in heaven.

  57. And we went to Isaiah 40 to talk about the fact that God is both

  58. very close and intimate with us as a father.

  59. Indeed, He knows the number of hairs on our heads, which is a

  60. far smaller number for me than it is for many of you.

  61. God be praised and yet he is also in this intimacy, the one

  62. who made the heavens and the earth.

  63. He is the one that made the farthest galaxies and he's he's

  64. has the the whole oceans in the palm of his hands and the the

  65. size of him. His immensity is beyond

  66. comprehending. And yet this God, this big God

  67. is also intimate and close with us because of the gospel.

  68. These two things, his, his intimacy and his greatness are

  69. hard, hard to hold together. But the Bible does, our songs

  70. do. And it is important for us to

  71. know that he is not only a loving Father who is willing to

  72. help us, He is also the maker of heaven and earth.

  73. And he's able to do the same. He is able to help us.

  74. So with that framework, that theology which is grand and

  75. beautiful and took weeks to unpack, we can now begin to make

  76. our petitions known to God. And we can notice that the

  77. Lord's Prayer is presented as six petitions.

  78. The first three are God centered and the latter 3 are according

  79. to our needs. The order is very important to

  80. getting our hearts tuned to God's heart, very important to

  81. pray through His agenda before we pray through our needs.

  82. They're very important for us to pray for His, His name to be

  83. honored and glorified throughout the earth.

  84. That His Kingdom would continue to advance and come someday and

  85. that his His will would be done completely and eagerly here on

  86. earth and even in our own lives, as much as it's done with

  87. eagerness and completeness by the angels in heaven themselves.

  88. And so we prayed through these and we worked through these and

  89. thought through these and hopefully those have settled

  90. down deep in our hearts as a, as a way for us to, to pray not

  91. only in our private lives, but also in public.

  92. The latter 3 petitions now focus on our needs.

  93. Now we're ready. We're ready to pray for our

  94. needs. And we talked about our daily

  95. needs that we pray and ask God for daily grace for the daily

  96. needs. He tends to give us grace like

  97. manna one day at a time. We also talked about our need

  98. for forgiveness, not only our vertical forgiveness, our pardon

  99. from God, but also to work consistently in life by

  100. forgiving others around us as they sin against us.

  101. One of the ways we show that we're a forgiven person is that

  102. we become forgiving people, and that is hard work, particularly

  103. for very difficult things. And like the manna coming one

  104. day at a time, we pray daily for the the strength to forgive yet

  105. again. That thing that has been done to

  106. us didn't help us to remember to be quick with this as much as we

  107. can. The final set of petition or the

  108. third petition in this latter set has to do with protection.

  109. We pray against evil, we pray against the evil. 1 and we ask

  110. the Lord to guard us and to guard our families and to guard

  111. our communities. So we worked our way through

  112. those, thought carefully about each of those.

  113. And then we got into the last section, which is not in the

  114. text of your Bibles, but you'll see it down in the footnote.

  115. This doxology, this glory word, this word of praise, the way the

  116. church has been in public worship concluding the Lord's

  117. Prayer for centuries upon centuries, that as we go into

  118. the last things, we, we just thank God for what He has done.

  119. And we noticed that this also, we broke this out into 3

  120. sections. First we thanked God and praised

  121. Him for His Kingdom and power. And we also the second week

  122. talked about His glory being our chief end and our prime purpose.

  123. And then finally this morning I'm going to talk briefly with

  124. you about this word. Amen.

  125. Amen is a Hebrew word actually, and it comes through into the

  126. Greek New Testament as Amen. They just bring it right through

  127. from Hebrew into Greek as Amen. And in English we've done the

  128. same thing. So it's kind of a nice little

  129. tradition we have going. It's a Hebrew word that we tack

  130. on to the end of our prayers. It means it's true.

  131. It means may it be so it means don't you agree?

  132. And we use this all the time, even in our normal way of

  133. talking. You hear people say in Spanish

  134. verdad, right. Verdad means is it true?

  135. True. Do you agree?

  136. True. In English, you hear people

  137. saying, you know, you, you know, you say something, you know, you

  138. know, you trying to get people to say, yeah, I know and agree.

  139. Yeah, but we do. We do this.

  140. Notice that it's exclamatory, right?

  141. You got this punctuation on there that lets you know it is a

  142. it is a Hardy thing to say. It is a firm agreement and

  143. endorsement. Yeah, I'm in.

  144. Amen. That's right.

  145. Preach it. Miles of babes and infants.

  146. Praise God. Amen.

  147. Thank you, Liz, we notice it all through scripture.

  148. I will not regale you with text after text after text.

  149. I'm going to give you some this morning.

  150. They're important, but it's all through your Bible.

  151. Lately in my devotions, I've been going slowly through

  152. Matthew in the Greek because I want to see more what's going

  153. on. And it's amazing how often

  154. Jesus, when he really wants to emphasize, will say Amen, Amen,

  155. truly, truly, I'm I'm real listening now.

  156. Listen to me now when he's about to really emphasize something

  157. that he wants them to remember you have in Psalm 106 verse 48.

    Psalms 106:48

  158. Blessed be the Lord. This is a word of doxology, a

  159. song of doxology. Blessed be the Lord, the God of

  160. Israel from everlasting to everlasting and let all the

  161. people say good job, praise the Lord.

  162. See how exclamatory that is. The new English translation

  163. brings out this agreement thing with a we agree, praise the

  164. Lord. So when you hear people give a

  165. hearty Amen, they're they're lending their their whole

  166. reputation to the thing that you're saying, punctuating it

  167. with a a hearty affirmation. We're supposed to do this.

  168. We're supposed to do this in public.

  169. It's interesting that Paul in a couple of places in the New

  170. Testament kind of assumes that it happens in church.

  171. One place is in First Corinthians chapter 14, verse

    1 Corinthians 14:16

  172. 16, this context GR Paul is giving out instructions for

  173. corporate worship. He's concerned in Corinth about

  174. people just talking over each other and not really caring

  175. about the people around them to make sure that they understand

  176. what's happening. And so he asked this question,

  177. how can anyone say Amen to your Thanksgiving when he does not

  178. know what you are saying? Paul is concerned about order

  179. and accessibility in corporate worship so that we can agree

  180. verbally with one another. Amen.

  181. Now I'm going to switch over and talk a little bit about faith,

  182. because what I think's going on when you give a hearty Amen is

  183. that you're giving voice to some aspect of your faith.

  184. Essentially by saying Amen, you're saying I believe that I

  185. affirm that I want to live as though that's true Amen.

  186. So we got to talk about faith for a moment.

  187. Hebrews 11, verse 6, verse 6 says this.

    Hebrews 11:6

  188. And without faith it is impossible to please him.

  189. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists

  190. and that He rewards those who seek Him.

  191. Very important doctrines of faith.

  192. What is faith? How does faith work with prayer?

  193. And now we're entering into that place.

  194. Faith is the breath of your prayer.

  195. Your prayers are the breath of your faith.

  196. Faith and prayer are very, very closely related.

  197. Before I go a little further with this, we need to just

  198. define faith a little bit more and a little bit better.

  199. And I gave you some English words on this next slide.

  200. But also if you like other languages and you think that's

  201. easier to learn some of the theological words that go with

  202. this, I've put those up there for some of you who like that

  203. kind of thing that the rest of you can completely ignore it.

  204. There are three aspects when we teach about the definition of

  205. faith and the aspects of faith, we like to talk about 3 aspects.

  206. 1 is knowledge. The second is ascent or

  207. agreement, and the third is trust.

  208. Third is trust. It's going to be hard to

  209. understand, but I like to illustrate with airplanes.

  210. OK, imagine you got yourself in a time machine and you went back

  211. in time and you went back to to a time and a place before

  212. airplanes. And you're trying to explain

  213. from the future to these people in the past that in the future,

  214. people are going to be able to fly through the air in these

  215. special machines called airplanes and in helicopters.

  216. And you will probably be met by this person with disbelief.

  217. And you can argue and you can talk, and maybe you could

  218. eventually convince one of them. Yeah, OK, I understand what

  219. you're saying. I think and kind of

  220. intellectually agree with you that, yeah, maybe people could

  221. fly if they had the right thing. Right.

  222. But maybe then you want to really kind of prove it.

  223. You really want to get them to believe.

  224. And so you do a demonstration because your time machine is

  225. also a flying machine. So you say, OK, I'm going to get

  226. in the fly. I'm going to get in The Time

  227. Machine. I'm just going to show you how

  228. it flies. You're going to see.

  229. And then I'm going to land and you're going to see and you're

  230. going to you're going to then you're going to really believe.

  231. You're going to have a sense, you're going to agree with me

  232. that humans can fly. You just saw, saw me do it.

  233. But then there's a third level of faith, which actually has to

  234. do with will you stake your life on it?

  235. Whole different matter to think, yeah, intellectually people can

  236. fly in planes or agree. Yeah, I agree with you.

  237. They can fly a place. Whole different matter to get on

  238. the plane, strap yourself in the seat and trust your fates to

  239. whoever's driving. And so when we talk about faith,

  240. saving faith, we just say you got to, you got to know

  241. something about the gospel. Then you have to agree that it's

  242. true. You have to have a cent.

  243. But then saving faith is a trusting faith, a submitting

  244. faith, a living out as though it is true.

  245. And this is a kind of faith, a biblical faith that is

  246. important. How does it intersect and inform

  247. our prayers? Bible teaches that it's

  248. important for us to pray from this faithful frame.

  249. Look at James one. If any of you lacks wisdom, let

  250. him ask God. That's a prayer should be

  251. praying that probably every day. Lord, help me have wisdom.

  252. Let him ask God, who gives generously to all without

  253. reproach. It's a beautiful fatherly thing,

  254. and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith with no

  255. doubting. For the one who doubts is like a

  256. wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

  257. For that person was not supposed you'll receive anything from the

  258. Lord. He is a double minded man,

  259. unstable in all his ways. Now that verse can make it.

  260. You feel afraid like, oh, will I ever have enough faith to ask

  261. God? And how will I ever really

  262. receive anything that I need if I can't know for sure if I have

  263. enough faith? And I don't think that's exactly

  264. what James is saying. He says we need to know

  265. something about the character of God, that he knows what we need

  266. and that he's generous. Pray to that guy.

  267. He's going to give you what you need, right?

  268. Also, it's important to note biblically, faith and doubting

  269. are often commingled. They're often together.

  270. Look at this text from Mark 9. His father wants his child to be

  271. healed immediately. The father of the child cried

  272. out and said, I believe, help my unbelief.

  273. That is an encouraging verse, isn't it?

  274. Such an encouraging verse. The Lord Himself makes up the

  275. lack and the defects in our broken prayers.

  276. He covers them in blood and the power of the Holy Spirit and and

  277. causes them to be effective and powerful even when our faith is

  278. weak. So may this be our prayer as we

  279. think about our relationship between our faith in God and the

  280. things that we are praying for. When we say Amen, we are trying

  281. to strengthen our own faith, strengthen the faith of those

  282. around us and to believe that which we have prayed about.

  283. Now, what are some pitfalls to prayer?

  284. What are some pitfalls to prayer?

  285. Important thing to think about, the verses that I'm going to go

  286. through now are actually right before the Lord's Prayer if you

  287. have your Bibles, and it's in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  288. Two important pitfalls that we need to be aware of, defects of

  289. faith, perhaps even unbelief that we need to be aware of as

  290. we conclude this series in the immediate context of the Lord's

  291. Prayer, Matthew chapter 6, beginning in verse 5.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  292. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites.

  293. So the first pitfall is hypocrisy.

  294. For they, the hypocrites, love to stand and pray in the

  295. synagogues and at the street corners that they may be seen by

  296. others. Truly, I say to you, they have

  297. received their reward in the context.

  298. You had professional holy people who had amazing reputations

  299. because they could go out in public and make long showy

  300. prayers. Jesus doesn't like this.

  301. He's thinking that is not even prayer at all.

  302. It is performative self seeking nonsense.

  303. His antidote to this type of hypocrisy is secrecy.

  304. If you don't want to be a hypocrite and you have a problem

  305. with trying to perform in your prayers to get people to like

  306. you and think you're good. Jesus says I got the answer.

  307. The answer is secrecy. Go practice in private for a

  308. long time before you're ready to come out here and try again in

  309. public. He's not forbidding public

  310. prayer. He's forbidding hypocrisy in

  311. public prayer. But when I but when you pray,

  312. verse 6, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your

  313. father who is in secret and your Father who sees in secret will

  314. reward you. This is a way to grow your

  315. faith, to grow your faith in prayer, to learn how to depend

  316. on the Lord and submission in privacy and secrecy before you

  317. go out and attempt to lead others in corporate prayer.

  318. The first pitfall is hypocrisy. The second pitfall is

  319. superstition. Verse 7.

  320. And when you pray, do not keep up empty phrases as the Gentiles

  321. do, for they think that they will be heard for their many

  322. words. Do not be like them, for your

  323. Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  324. This type of person is just adding words upon words upon

  325. words, particularly words about little details, thinking that

  326. superstitiously I will get God to do what I want by praying all

  327. of these words. Inane babblings about details

  328. and a couple of comments on this.

  329. One is from CS Lewis commenting on this verse.

  330. He says this. We say that we believe God to be

  331. omniscient. That means all knowing.

  332. Yet a great deal of prayer seems to consist of giving him

  333. information. And indeed, we have been

  334. reminded by our Lord to not pray as if we forgot his omniscience.

  335. And then he quotes the verse For your heavenly Father knows you

  336. need all these things. Lewis says this is final against

  337. one very silly sort of prayer. I have heard a man offer a

  338. prayer for a sick person which really amounted to a diagnosis,

  339. followed by advice as to how God should treat the patient.

  340. Hilarious. Hilarious.

  341. We're trying to teach God. We're trying to explain things

  342. to God. And Calvin writes this.

  343. Christ does not forbid us to pray long prayers with much

  344. feeling, but He requires that we should not be confident in our

  345. ability to wrest something from God by beating upon His ears

  346. with excessive talkativeness, especially on trivial matters.

  347. This flow of talk, as if He was going to be persuaded as men are

  348. this this talkativeness childishly mocks God.

  349. It is no wonder that it is forbidden by the Church, in

  350. order that nothing shall resound there except what is earnest and

  351. comes forth from the depths of the heart.

  352. Now before you get too worried about your word count when

  353. you're praying, we need to think about relationship.

  354. These verses make more sense in relationship.

  355. If my children who are some of them are teenagers.

  356. Now we're excessively worried about the food in our home and

  357. we're constantly giving my wife, she does the lion's share, 99.9%

  358. of the food acquisition in our home.

  359. God bless her. She's very worried if something

  360. happens to her that I will try to survive on McDonald's.

  361. She might be right. I don't know.

  362. I think I would get sick of it. It's an ongoing debate.

  363. What if my kids were constantly worried about, did you remember

  364. to get this? Did you remember to get that?

  365. Here's my list. I got another list.

  366. Don't forget that. Don't forget this.

  367. And don't forget that at some point, she'd be like, I got it,

  368. I got it. I I've done this a lot.

  369. Thank you. Please show your trust in this

  370. situation so it's not to clamp down and not make them ever want

  371. to talk again. We're supposed to pray, but what

  372. do you really need? Do I really need to give so many

  373. nitty gritty details about all the things to an omniscient God?

  374. No, I do not. He knows what I need before I

  375. ask Him. We're about to go on a trip.

  376. We're going to be gone for a few weeks.

  377. We usually have a prayer before we leave the driveway.

  378. We have a prayer. It's good to have a prayer.

  379. My kids would be annoyed if that prayer went on and on and on,

  380. praying against the potholes and praying about the semis and

  381. praying about, you know, the the traffic and on and on and on and

  382. on. We don't need to do that.

  383. It's fine to just say, Lord keep us safe on the road today.

  384. Luther points out with this, Jesus then demonstrates the very

  385. brevity he's trying to communicate.

  386. Have you ever thought, wow, the Lord's Prayer so short, it's one

  387. of the shortest prayers in all of Scripture?

  388. Loser says, yeah, because the problem is if with show offs,

  389. with hypocrisy and people who are superstitious, who are

  390. stacking words on words and words, they need brevity, right?

  391. We still pray, but it needs to be shorter.

  392. Luther says it should be frequent and intense and

  393. authentic. That's much better than long

  394. drawn out and eloquent. Good advice.

  395. Now, I don't also want you to think that people who pray too

  396. long that we're judging you or that there's a problem here,

  397. right? But I also want to say I'm glad

  398. that in the corporate prayers in this church, I know the men who

  399. pray up here and they are coming from a deep well of walking with

  400. the Lord. You learn how to pray in public

  401. by praying in private, and you come in and they're brief.

  402. They're to the point. They're not informing God of

  403. what He needs to know, but are usually thankful and presenting

  404. a request in a pattern very similar to the brevity

  405. demonstrated by a Lord in this prayer.

  406. Very helpful, very, very practical.

  407. The Bible says this in Ecclesiastes chapter 5 regarding

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  408. corporate worship. Guard your steps when you go to

  409. the House of God to draw a near. To listen is better than to

  410. offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know they are

  411. doing evil. Do not be rash with your mouth,

  412. nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God

  413. is in heaven and you are on earth.

  414. Therefore let your words be few. I need help with this.

  415. I got a lot of words. I'm sorry.

  416. Lord help us. Lord help all of us.

  417. As we're thinking through our Lord's warnings and these

  418. potential pitfalls, I want to end with thinking about Christ

  419. ourself being our amens. We introduced a little bit about

  420. what this word means. Now let's talk about Jesus

  421. himself being our Amen as we land this plane.

  422. Ji Packer in his extremely helpful book, Short, Accessible

  423. Praying the Lord's Prayer, he goes back through the Lord's

  424. Prayer and asks if you and I can give our Amen to that section of

  425. the prayer. So I'm going to lead you through

  426. his words, thinking about giving, whether you're ready to

  427. give your Amen to certain sections.

  428. Some things you may not be ready to give your Amen to.

  429. Some things are going to be seem impossible.

  430. That's on purpose because the impossible things are going to

  431. force us in humility to ask God for his strength and to confess

  432. our sins and ask Him to be the one who prays with and for us.

  433. So I'll lead you through this and you can hear each part of

  434. the prayer. The traditional doxology, or

  435. this word of praise at the end teaches us to round off the

  436. Lord's Prayer with Amen. This is right.

  437. Amen. Best said loudly and with

  438. emphasis. I love that is our final

  439. profession of having meant what we have said and identifying

  440. completely with the attitudes, hopes, and goals that the Lord's

  441. Prayer expresses. So the fittest way to end, he's

  442. saying, end his book. The fittest way to end these

  443. brief studies in the prayer that takes a lifetime and more to

  444. master is with a checklist of the main items involved.

  445. Therefore, I ask, do you identify with the trust in Jesus

  446. as your own Savior and the faith in God as your own God through

  447. Him, and the recognition of every Christian as your own

  448. brother in God's family that is expressed by the words our

  449. Father? Amen Is the hallowing of God's

  450. name in and through you, whatever that may cost your own

  451. controlling purpose in life. I hope so, Amen.

  452. Do you want to see God triumph in His Kingdom and to see

  453. everything that does not match His perfection come to an end?

  454. Amen. Will you labor and suffer for

  455. the Kingdom, if need be, so as to become its agent, the means

  456. of bringing it into lives and situations where the gates have

  457. been locked against God? Amen.

  458. Do you happily take God's will of command for your rule and

  459. God's will of events for your destiny, knowing by faith that

  460. both are supremely good? Lord, help us.

  461. Amen. Is there any matter in which you

  462. are flying in the face of God's will of command?

  463. Places where we're being wilfully disobedient, excusing

  464. ourselves on the grounds of there being other commands that

  465. you faithfully keep. If so, what will you now do

  466. about it? He talks about how the prayer

  467. confronts us, asks us to confess, and He'll even lead us

  468. in these words in a time of confession.

  469. Do you see and know that unless God acts to provide for today's

  470. needs and to and to pardon today's sins and to protect you

  471. in today's temptations, you are lost?

  472. Amen. Do you make it an issue of

  473. conscience never to bear a grudge or cherish bitterness

  474. against anyone, but to show forgiving mercy always because

  475. of the forgiving mercy that God always shows you?

  476. Lord help us. Is there any person whom

  477. hitherto you have refused to forgive for what he or she did

  478. to you? Will you ask the Lord this

  479. moment to help you change your attitude and get right with that

  480. person? Do you make it your habit to

  481. watch and pray against temptation?

  482. Will you make it your habit from now on?

  483. He asks us, Is the Lord's Prayer really in your heart?

  484. Are you honest when you say Amen to it?

  485. His next word is a direct quote from the English Prayer Book.

  486. He's a Anglican minister and in their prayer services, the

  487. congregation will respond with these brief words of confession

  488. and contrition. So you're going to see this next

  489. sentence in quotes because it's coming from the prayer book.

  490. It's for the the words of the people in the response to all

  491. these questions. They say, oh God, make clean our

  492. hearts within us and take not thy Holy Spirit from us.

  493. They're pulling directly from Psalm 51 there.

  494. And then Packer will end with his own prayer.

  495. Lord, teach me how to pray by teaching me how to live for

  496. Jesus sake. And there's that word again,

  497. Amen. May it be so.

  498. It can only be so through Christ our Amen, which comes so clearly

  499. to us from Second Corinthians chapter 1, beginning in verse

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  500. 19. For the Son of God, Jesus

  501. Christ, whom we proclaimed among you Sylvanus and Timothy and I

  502. was not yes and no, but in Him it is always yes.

  503. He's talking about Christ's faithfulness.

  504. He's not flaky. Neither are the apostles.

  505. For all the promises of God find their yes in Him.

  506. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God

  507. for His glory. Your faith may be weak.

  508. There's a big Amen at the end of your prayer, and it's Jesus

  509. Christ the righteous, and it is God who establishes us with you

  510. in Christ and has anointed us, and who has also put His seal on

  511. us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

  512. Besides this big Amen, which is Jesus Christ, there's the

  513. anointing of the Holy Spirit who groans and utters prayers on our

  514. behalf even when we're so full of grief we can't do anything

  515. but cry. When our our hearts are cracked,

  516. we are shattered and we moan out to God by the Spirit.

  517. ABBA, help me man who has also put his seal on us and given us

  518. his spirit in our hearts as a guarantee it will happen.

  519. Amen. So I don't know what your

  520. experience is. I don't know where you're at

  521. right now. Our community is wracked in

  522. grief right now, even as we're trying to celebrate graduations.

  523. We are hurting. And all I know how to say as

  524. your pastor is to do what I'm doing is just try to model and

  525. follow the all that are better than me at this is to cling to

  526. Jesus as he clings to us. I'm so thankful for the the life

  527. and the ministry of Rich Mullins, who is now with Jesus.

  528. Because when my faith is weak and I feel fragile, I just

  529. resonate so much with the words from this song.

  530. And even the melody that he uses is so is so prayerful and achy.

  531. But it sounds like this. I'm not going to sing it to you,

  532. but I'm just going to read it to you.

  533. Well, sometimes my life just don't make sense at all when the

  534. mountains look so big and my faith just seems so small.

  535. So hold me Jesus, because I'm shaking like a leaf.

  536. You've been king of my glory. Won't you be my Prince of Peace?

  537. And I think that just hits right where a lot of us are living day

  538. by day right now. Hold me Jesus, because I'm

  539. shaking when we need his tranquility.

  540. That comes from the hope of knowing that all the promises of

  541. God find their, yes, their Amen in Jesus Christ by the power of

  542. the Holy Spirit. Praise God, praise God.

  543. You know, there's a tradition, a long tradition of having Amen at

  544. the end of songs. Some of the Psalms end with

  545. Amen. If you find a hymnal, a lot of

  546. times there's tacked on to the end Amen.

  547. We don't sing those that often, but it's that corporate

  548. affirmation of the truth of the song.

  549. And we're going to have a separate song of response.

  550. But I I thought that I could just lead us this morning in the

  551. doxology because I want to hear y'all say Amen to each other,

  552. sing Amen to each other. I want you to hear the harmonies

  553. that will inevitably come out of you and the consolation that

  554. comes from this word which means Jesus.

  555. Are you ready? Praise God, from whom all

  556. blessings flow. We've been concluding by saying

  557. the Lord's Prayer together. If you don't know it, that's OK,

  558. Just listen. When we get to the line about

  559. debts or sins or trespasses, we've been saying trespasses.

  560. So we pray with me to conclude, our Father who are in heaven,

  561. hallowed be thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done

  562. on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day Our Daily

  563. Bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those

  564. who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but

  565. deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and

  566. the power and the glory forever. Amen.
