  1. good morning Welcome To Life Church my

  2. name is Dustin I'm one of the pastors

  3. here at Life Church and it's an honor to

  4. continue our Series today as we look at

  5. a Theology of love in a series called

  6. loveology Pastor Aaron last week kicked

  7. off this series and we talked about um

  8. mainly this vertical kind of love like

  9. the the the love that is most embodied

  10. in God sending his son Jesus as a

  11. sacrifice for our sins so mainly talked

  12. about this ver iCal love but then also

  13. Pastor Aaron talked about this

  14. horizontal love you know shape of the

  15. Cross this horizontal love our love for

  16. one another and today we're actually

  17. going to go a little bit further and

  18. explore this horizontal love with a

  19. sermon titled A Theology of

  20. relationships Theology of relationships

  21. this applies to every single person in

  22. the room because you have at least one

  23. relationship although the sad fact is

  24. you might not have many more Dan Cox is

  25. the director of the survey Center on

  26. American life he and his organization

  27. have pulled thousands of people and have

  28. discovered this that over the past three

  29. decades the number of close friends that

  30. Americans have has plummeted seems to be

  31. true for every age group for every

  32. gender for every race for every income

  33. level for people in Metro and non-metro

  34. areas living with a spouse or a partner

  35. not living with a spouse or a partner

  36. everyone seems to be spending more time

  37. alone now it's something like 46% of

  38. Americans who say they are lonely or

  39. feel alone 43% say that the

  40. relationships they do have are not

  41. meaningful and this has maybe

  42. unsurprisingly hit men harder than it

  43. has even hit women the percentage of men

  44. who have at least six close friends has

  45. fallen from 55% in

  46. 1990 to 27%

  47. today the percentage of men who say they

  48. have no close friends so not not six not

  49. five or three or two but zero close

  50. friends was only 3% in

  51. 1990 it has risen to 15% today it's five

  52. times

  53. more something's wrong I mean we have

  54. greater access to communication than

  55. ever before you've got text message and

  56. emails we've got FaceTime and zoom all

  57. of our social media accounts yet we are

  58. more lonely than ever before and that's

  59. not the way that God intended for it to

  60. be author John ortberg cited a different

  61. study of 7,000 people over a period of

  62. nine years and he wrote this quote

  63. researchers found that the most isolated

  64. people were three times more likely to

  65. die than those with strong relational

  66. connections at least to die early people

  67. who had bad health habits smoking poor

  68. eating habits obesity alcohol use but

  69. had strong social ties lived

  70. significantly longer than people who had

  71. great health habits but were isolated in

  72. other words he concluded it is better to

  73. eat Twinkies with good friends than to

  74. eat broccoli

  75. alone I think we can all agree with that

  76. today you can grab your Bibles and turn

  77. with me to the very beginning today

  78. we're going to look at a Theology of

  79. relationships and I want us to explore

  80. how relationships were created by God

  81. and for God relationships every single

  82. one of them were created by God and for

  83. God the first thing that you can write

  84. down in your notes is this relationship

  85. ships are at the center of God's

  86. plan not only has God eternally existed

  87. in relationship is God the Father God

  88. the son and God the Holy Spirit but he

  89. at our very beginning designed us you

  90. and me to be relational let's look at

  91. Genesis 1: 26 and 27 then God said let

  92. us make man in our image notice this let

  93. us uh some theologians scholars believe

  94. that this this us are the members of

  95. God's Heavenly Court I read it as the

  96. you know the first hint of the trinity

  97. in the Bible God the Father God the son

  98. God the holy spirit either

  99. way there is this community of

  100. relationships in heaven and watch this

  101. let us let us make man in our own image

  102. after our likeness and let them have

  103. dominion over the fish of the sea and

  104. over the birds of the heaven and over

  105. the livestock and over all the Earth and

  106. over for every creeping thing that

  107. creeps on the earth so God created man

  108. in his own image in the image of God he

  109. created him male and female he created

  110. them follow with me in the very

  111. beginning God began to create began to

  112. paint the the the stars in the in the

  113. sky and the galaxies and the universe in

  114. the earth and he said it was good he

  115. created light and it was good he he

  116. separated day from night and land from

  117. water and said that was good too then he

  118. created the stars and the plants and the

  119. fish and the birds and all of that was

  120. good and then God said something was not

  121. good after God created man he said it is

  122. not good that man should be

  123. alone

  124. notice Adam was lonely before sin ever

  125. entered into into the picture this is

  126. key Pastor author Theologian Tim Keller

  127. actually wrote this about that Adam was

  128. not lonely because he was

  129. imperfect Adam was lonely because he was

  130. perfect Adam was lonely because he was

  131. like God and therefore since he was like

  132. God he had to have someone to love

  133. someone to work with someone to talk to

  134. someone to share with all of our other

  135. problems our anger our anxiety our fear

  136. our

  137. cowardice all of those arise out of sin

  138. and

  139. imperfection loneliness is the one

  140. problem that you have because you're

  141. made in the image of

  142. God God invented

  143. relationships as a means of fullness and

  144. a means of wholeness as a means of

  145. healing and worship relationships are a

  146. direct reflection of God and at the and

  147. it is at the center of God's plan we see

  148. this at creation we also see this at the

  149. formation of the people of God as they

  150. were gathering together and deciding to

  151. not just become a family but become a a

  152. people group a a country a nation they

  153. established laws to govern themselves by

  154. 10 of them are quite popular you may

  155. have heard of them before the Ten

  156. Commandments listen of the Ten

  157. Commandments the first four are about

  158. the relationship between you and God the

  159. final six are about the relationship

  160. between you and others all 10 of them

  161. are about

  162. relationship between you and God and

  163. between you and others all throughout

  164. the Bible there are countless examples

  165. of meaning ful deep relationships you've

  166. got of course Jonathan and David in 1

    1 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  167. Samuel chapter 20 you've got Ruth and

  168. Naomi in the Book of Ruth you've got

  169. Paul and Timothy co-workers in First

  170. Corinthians Jesus himself valued

  171. relationships when he was here on Earth

  172. he had the 12 that he did life with he

  173. had the three Peter James and John that

  174. he had a close relationship with and

  175. then kind of his best friends that he

  176. would visit quite often just to hang out

  177. Mary Martha and Lazarus

  178. relationships are and have always been

  179. at the center of God's plan but if

  180. that's the case why why do we have so

  181. many broken

  182. relationships if it's at the center of

  183. God's design what happened to

  184. fracture that

  185. design the second thing that you can

  186. write down is this relationships are

  187. affected by the Fall not only were they

  188. affected back then but they are still

  189. affected and impacted today I feel like

  190. I don't have to actually give you a lot

  191. of scripture to uh Express this because

  192. every single one of the US in the room

  193. are products of um difficult

  194. relationships we've all experienced

  195. broken relationships we've all had a

  196. role to play in broken relationships

  197. some of us have been stabbed in the back

  198. by a trusted friend or we've had a

  199. friend disappear when you need them

  200. needed the

  201. most we've all had our hearts broken

  202. from time to time

  203. in fact relationships were only perfect

  204. for two chapters of the Bible and then

  205. everything everything went sour sin

  206. ravaged everything in the world nature

  207. was affected death was introduced and

  208. relationships were greatly impacted

  209. let's look at Genesis chapter 3 and

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  210. we'll just get a glimpse of it here and

  211. then God said to the woman I will

  212. sharpen the pain of your pregnancy and

  213. in pain you will give birth

  214. and you will desire to control your

  215. husband but he will rule over you and to

  216. the man he said since you listened to

  217. your wife and ate from the tree whose

  218. fruit I commanded you not to eat the

  219. ground is cursed because of you all your

  220. life you will struggle to scratch a

  221. living from it it will grow thorns and

  222. thistles for you though you will eat of

  223. its grains by the sweat of your brow

  224. will you have food to eat until you

  225. return to the ground from which you were

  226. made for you were made from dust and to

  227. dust you shall

  228. return that's not an encouraging set of

  229. verses in the wake of sin everything was

  230. broken there were only two humans in the

  231. world at the time and the war had

  232. already begun and because of sin

  233. struggle would produce

  234. Strife

  235. jealousy

  236. fornication adultery y Pride abuse

  237. unforgiveness

  238. Revenge none of these things existed

  239. when God designed and created

  240. relationships in the beginning but sin

  241. fractured it all now listen to me

  242. relationships are

  243. good but they are not God they will not

  244. fulfill you in that way they will

  245. especially now that they are fractured

  246. your relationships cannot save you and

  247. and if you if they haven't already at

  248. some point they will disappoint you and

  249. listen if you're single in the room and

  250. you desire at one point to find a a

  251. boyfriend or a girlfriend or a spouse

  252. and you want to get married that is a

  253. good holy and healthy desire but listen

  254. marriage will not fix you we'll talk

  255. more about marriage next week but I do

  256. want to uh marriage counselor Gary

  257. Thomas said this about marriage marriage

  258. doesn't solve emptiness it only exposes

  259. it a relationship whether it's uh

  260. someone that you're married to or a

  261. friend or a

  262. parent a

  263. coworker a boss of course we know that

  264. one to be true none of that is going to

  265. like fix you none of that is going to

  266. repair what is broken and they will

  267. disappoint you every relationship you

  268. will ever be in will be imperfect and

  269. you will have a part to play in the

  270. imperfection every relationship you will

  271. ever be in will be imperfect and you

  272. will have a part to play in the

  273. imperfection friends are good but

  274. friends are not God your spouse is

  275. good not thank you I mean one amen right

  276. like silent is scary right there guys um

  277. but your marriage will not fix you they

  278. are not God let God be God expect the

  279. most out of every relationship but know

  280. that sooner or later you will likely be

  281. disappointed and you will likely

  282. disappoint and that's okay that's that's

  283. normal I me the Discord began back in

  284. the garden in Genesis chapter 3 and it

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  285. continues

  286. today but that's not the only news it's

  287. the bad news but it's not the only news

  288. thankfully broken relationships don't

  289. have to remain broken

  290. just like everything else Point number

  291. three relationships can be Redeemed by

  292. Jesus this is the good news today

  293. relationships can be Redeemed by

  294. Jesus did you know that a part of

  295. Jesus's final prayer before his arrest

  296. and his crucifixion was all about

  297. relationships I'll show you in John

    John 17 chapter mention

  298. chapter

  299. 17 Jesus said this in the middle of his

  300. prayer I I'm praying not only for these

  301. disciples his friends but also for all

  302. who will ever believe in me through

  303. their message that's you and me I pray

  304. that they will all be one just as you

  305. and I are one as you are in me father

  306. and I am in you and may they be in us so

  307. that the world will believe that you

  308. sent me Jesus in one of his final

  309. Earthly prayers prayed for himself

  310. prayed for his disciples and then he

  311. prayed for you and me and all who would

  312. ever believe in

  313. him he prayed for two things

  314. specifically he prayed for Unity and he

  315. prayed for later he prayed for love

  316. unity and love that we would be unified

  317. and that that we would love one another

  318. and that we would love deeply sacrific s

  319. sacrificially relentlessly that we would

  320. love

  321. you will never taste true

  322. friendship unless that friendship is

  323. rooted in the unity and the love of

  324. Jesus I am not saying that unbelievers

  325. people that don't follow Christ can

  326. never experience meaningful

  327. relationships but I am saying that until

  328. you accept Christ as your savior you

  329. will never know the fullness of

  330. friendship and the completeness of

  331. intimacy

  332. there is something Divine about

  333. relationships that can only be fully

  334. understood or more fully understood when

  335. you understand the love from the father

  336. when you understand and have received

  337. what only Jesus has to

  338. give do you want those kinds of

  339. relationships I'd encourage you to

  340. follow the Apostle Paul's advice to the

  341. Colossians in Colossians chapter 3 he

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  342. said that since God chose CH you to be

  343. the holy people that he loves you must

  344. clothe yourselves with tender-hearted

  345. Mercy with kindness humility gentleness

  346. and patience make allowance for each

  347. other's faults and forgive anyone who

  348. offends you remember this is important

  349. the Lord forgave you so too you must

  350. forgive

  351. others Paul says a few things here he

  352. says to clothe yourself with these

  353. characteristics like in the morning how

  354. you put on clothes this morning what if

  355. every morning you woke up and you put on

  356. kindness and mercy humility and

  357. gentleness that just as important as

  358. your underwear and your

  359. pants kindness

  360. humility gentleness

  361. patience what if you put these on every

  362. morning when you feel like it when you

  363. don't feel like it especially when you

  364. don't feel like it and the encouraging

  365. thing is you don't have to drudge these

  366. things up out of nowhere it is God's

  367. grace that allows you to be gracious to

  368. others you're a funnel it's God's mercy

  369. that allows you to be merciful to others

  370. you don't have to create this out of

  371. nowhere you have been given it so why

  372. would we not freely give it to others

  373. yeah God gives you his forgiveness and

  374. so guess what you daily regularly

  375. consistently persistently get to give to

  376. others forgiveness over and over again

  377. when they deserve it and when they don't

  378. especially when they don't because it

  379. was in your sins that Jesus died for you

  380. we have been given much and so we too

  381. give to others look it is true

  382. relationships have been damaged by sin

  383. but they have not been destroyed your

  384. relationship can be redeemed no matter

  385. how broken it is your relationship can

  386. be redeemed you can have a meaningful

  387. marriage marage you can have a good

  388. friendship a deep robust

  389. lifegiving

  390. lifechanging relationship it's waiting

  391. for you allow me to provide one example

  392. of a truly meaningful relationship in

  393. our not too distant past most of you

  394. know the names of the

  395. friends JRR tolking of course wrote The

  396. Lord of the Rings CS Lewis wrote The

  397. Chronicles of Narnia but did you know

  398. that the two were friends they were

  399. actually in a writing group together

  400. called the

  401. inklings and they worked

  402. together and the Lord of the Rings the

  403. series the book series would have never

  404. made it to Prince and the film series

  405. would have never graced the Silver

  406. Screen had it not been for the

  407. Friendship of these two

  408. men in this group called The inklings

  409. they would get together it was a

  410. literary group they would get together

  411. they would write they would share their

  412. writings with one another and tolken

  413. began to write some fairly Fantastical

  414. things he wrote about dwarves and elves

  415. and talking walking trees and it people

  416. thought it was weird and it was

  417. right but in their writing group one

  418. person CS Lewis was intrigued and he

  419. told his friend to keep on writing keep

  420. on writing there's something here it's

  421. good tolken would later write of CS

  422. Lewis after CS Lewis had had passed he

  423. said this about his

  424. friend the unpayable debt that I owe to

  425. him was not influence as it is

  426. ordinarily

  427. understood but sheer

  428. encouragement he was for long my only

  429. audience only from him did I ever get

  430. the idea that my stuff could be more

  431. than a private Hobby

  432. because of his interest and unceasing

  433. eagerness for more I should never have

  434. brought the Lord of the Rings to a

  435. conclusion you might never know what

  436. your kindness what your encouragement

  437. might mean to someone

  438. else the the next Lord of the Rings

  439. could be simply behind a simple word of

  440. encouragement to a friend and you might

  441. never know it in this life but the

  442. things that you say that the

  443. encouragement that you offer just being

  444. there and showing up can have a profound

  445. impact in the lives of others

  446. relationships have been damaged that

  447. much is true but they have not been

  448. destroyed you can be a good friend you

  449. can be a good daughter you can be a good

  450. son you can be a good spouse because of

  451. Jesus finally um one last thing is this

  452. relationship are for building God's

  453. church it's the fourth and final thing

  454. relationships are for building God's

  455. church can look at another Paul of

  456. Paul's letters in Galatians chapter 6

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  457. where he wrote whenever we have the

  458. opportunity we should do good to

  459. everyone especially those in the family

  460. of

  461. Faith this phrase family of Faith refers

  462. to fellow Believers you and I

  463. Christians and the Greek phrase for

  464. family Faith conveys a sense of kinship

  465. and

  466. belonging let me ask you do you feel

  467. that here don't answer just do do you

  468. feel when we gather on Sundays When We

  469. Gather on uh for for for midweek or for

  470. Life groups do you feel a sense of

  471. kinship and

  472. belonging or do you feel further

  473. isolated and

  474. alone I would imagine if we poll in this

  475. room there's definitely people here

  476. today that feel the the kinship and the

  477. friendship and the community this is the

  478. highlight of your week and we are so

  479. happy for that we try to create

  480. atmospheres and environments so that you

  481. can come and you can find those deep

  482. meaningful relationships and you can

  483. feel a part of the

  484. family but I would imagine that there

  485. are people in this

  486. room that do show up every

  487. week and maybe how

  488. much more amazing is it that in spite of

  489. what you feel the

  490. isolation the

  491. distance the

  492. disconnect that you continue to show up

  493. week after week after week because you

  494. know and you believe somewhere inside

  495. that there is something more and what

  496. you're feeling is not the way that it's

  497. supposed to

  498. be might I

  499. suggest that you're not the only one in

  500. the room today that feels that way there

  501. might just be someone else here in this

  502. room who feels exactly the same way who

  503. just wishes there was someone else here

  504. that would understand them that would

  505. reach out to them that would be there

  506. friends researchers at Harvard and the

  507. University of Wisconsin Madison did a

  508. study on components that led to a higher

  509. quality of life and here's what they

  510. found people who say they go to church

  511. every weak but have no close friends at

  512. the church are no happier than people

  513. who just do not go to church at

  514. all the finding is that no there is no

  515. increase in happiness simply by

  516. attending church

  517. weekly the author of the study wrote I'm

  518. not a religious person so I was

  519. surprised to see how well the

  520. friendships in the congregation

  521. explained people's satisfaction

  522. I personally began to think about

  523. whether I should go to church I know

  524. that it would make my mother happy Is

  525. How They

  526. concluded you are not meant to do life

  527. alone the Bible talks about this

  528. Fellowship of Believers in many

  529. different ways it talks about us as the

  530. body of Christ it talks about us as the

  531. family of

  532. God the people in this room should be

  533. they might not be yet but they should be

  534. and Can Be You Are spiritual brothers

  535. and sisters and mothers and

  536. fathers this

  537. means our primary identity as Christ

  538. followers is not

  539. biological it's

  540. theological our primary identity your

  541. primary identity as a Christ follower is

  542. not

  543. biological it is

  544. theological and in this new family you

  545. have a part to play a role to play

  546. and both the breadth and the depth of

  547. what God is doing in our church and in

  548. our community you have a part to

  549. play as a son or as a daughter A

  550. Spiritual brother or sister a spiritual

  551. father or mother or grandfather or

  552. grandmother there is a place and a role

  553. for

  554. everyone in a world that is relationally

  555. fractured where we are experiencing a

  556. friendship

  557. epidemic Jesus is calling us to

  558. something deeper to relationships marked

  559. by

  560. Grace patience and sacrificial love that

  561. doesn't originate from in

  562. here but from God

  563. himself but here's the challenge none of

  564. this is going to happen

  565. alone none of this is going to happen

  566. past passively if relationships are

  567. Central to God's plan and if they have

  568. been broken by the Fall then we must be

  569. active participants in the work of

  570. redeeming relationships God will do a

  571. profound work more than anything you and

  572. I would be able to do but we have a part

  573. to

  574. play means forgiving even when

  575. forgiveness is

  576. hard when they don't deserve it it means

  577. investing in others when it's incon

  578. venient showing up when you'd rather

  579. not pursuing Unity even when it's

  580. costly so who do you need to reconcile

  581. with

  582. today where have you allowed selfish

  583. desires to rule instead of

  584. love what do you need to do to be the

  585. friend or the son or the father or the

  586. spouse that God is calling you you to

  587. be I believe that the same Jesus who

  588. once prayed a prayer for our unity and

  589. our love for one another now gives us

  590. the strength to live that

  591. out because of Jesus your

  592. relationships can be healed your

  593. friendships can be restored and love can

  594. be more than just a word it can be the

  595. way that we

  596. live I pray for you this morning would

  597. you bow your heads and close your

  598. eyes Lord I

  599. Echo Jesus's prayer for Unity and

  600. love God I pray that you would bring us

  601. together as

  602. one and God that our love would be

  603. profound that it would be the love that

  604. we would have for one another that would

  605. help those on the outside to believe in

  606. the truth that is preached here weekend

  607. and weak out in fact it's how you said

  608. that they would know that our love is

  609. genuine our love for one another that we

  610. know that we are Christ's followers by

  611. our love for one another God I pray that

  612. we would be

  613. United that we would love God I pray

  614. that you would restore relationships

  615. today first between us and you if

  616. there's anyone in this room that does

  617. not have a relationship with you I pray

  618. that right now in this moment you would

  619. meet them

  620. you would draw them to yourself you

  621. would you would you you would

  622. demonstrate to them that it does not

  623. matter what they've done or where

  624. they've been or what they've said or

  625. what they believed or not believed but

  626. you are here to offer salvation and

  627. forgiveness and welcome them in to the

  628. family of

  629. [Music]

  630. God for those in this room that know you

  631. Lord pray that you would just bring

  632. healing and hope and restor ation to

  633. relationships God that you would give us

  634. the strength and the ability to do our

  635. part to play our role clothe us with

  636. grace and mercy and

  637. forgiveness so that we can extend that

  638. to

  639. others God we pray that you would redeem

  640. relationships today for our good and

  641. your glory in Jesus name we pray amen
