The Fear Of The Lord||Philippians 2:8-20 Amplified Bible Study

Welcome my brothers and sisters in Christ.

This is Evangelist Toby Doubtless.

I'm so excited to be back doing another teaching today.

We've been in the book of Philippians.

I want to get on back into the book of Philippians.

I took a couple of detours.

Went into the first chapter of John, went into chapter 8 of Romans, and now we're going to get back into the book of Philippians and chapter 2.

We left off in verse 8.

So I want to start off back there again.

And then we're going to see if we can probably finish today.

I don't know if we are.

Like I told you, I give you a full warning.

We do study and read a lot of scriptures over here.

I do believe in reading whole chapters because your answer that you're looking for could be within the chapter.

There are a lot of variety packs within the chapter that we can break down.

Sometimes the chapter may be one theme, and so you won't always have that.

But there are many chapters that do have different varieties of scriptures in there.

And the reason why I say varieties because, yes, even though they're all within the chapter, they can all be divided up into many different categories of teachings.

Now we do have some folk that hold to the teaching of taking one scripture out of the chapter and then building on it.

I I try not to do that because I want to try more to allow the scripture to do more of the interpretation and less of myself.

And so anytime I can practice doing that is not only better for me, but I feel it's better for you because it's not me leaning too much to my own understanding, but allowing the word to give us the understanding through the Holy Spirit.

And make no mistake about it, you do have to have the Holy Spirit, and he is a he.

He is not an it.

I've heard many people refer to him as an it, he is our partner, uh, and we are to treat him that way and walk alongside with the Holy Spirit who wants to help guide us in everything that we do in our lives.

And this word will definitely do that.

And we also have to put this word into practice until it becomes an automatic habit for us to live out this word, and now we can start to have the success and true transformation that God wants his children to have in the word.

Uh, and so with that being said, today I am reading from an amplified Bible.

I always try to state that to make sure that you understand this is the Bible that I study from, that I feel the most comfortable with.

I've been studying from it for about a couple years now, um, solidly going through the Bible.

I had one back in the day, but I didn't realize the value that it was to me, like I realize now.

And I I love it, you know.

But whatever Bible you have you feel comfortable with, go along with it.

Um, but if you want to rock with me, you don't have a Bible amplified version, you can go to Bible Gateway.

I from here and there, here and there, I use Bible Gateway uh to read a lot of the scriptures off of there and study my Bible so I can get to it quickly.

But hey, they have an AMP version, they have an AMP C use the AMP version because that's the way one I have, not the classic edition.

So without further ado, let's get on into it now.

When we got into chapter two, there were there's a lot in here.

Um we talked about being of one mind, knit by the same spirit, the Holy Spirit.

The truth is, ladies and gentlemen, there shouldn't be all these divisions that we have right now, currently today.

That is actually one of the works of the flesh.

Divisions and distinctions.

When everybody has their own separate doctrines, um, this one person don't like what that person says.

Uh they see a different truth, so they start their own church and they develop their own church based off the truth that they feel they see.

Same thing happens with them.

Somebody in their church doesn't like what they say.

They feel they can go out now and teach on their own, and they have their own version of the truth that they believe that the Bible is telling them.

But that is not the way that we are supposed to be.

We are supposed to be a one body, ladies and gentlemen, knit together.

The Holy Spirit serves as the blood flow, the oxygen flow throughout the body.

Unfortunately, there are so many um clogged up arteries where the Holy Spirit can't truly flow throughout the body as a whole.

But how many of you know that it don't take many for God to use to still do what it is God needs to do?

Uh, he took the apostle Paul who went to the Gentiles.

The whole goal was to get Israel to become the high priest and connect the rest of the world to the Father.

Well, that didn't happen.

Okay, but that did not stop the show.

God still chose the apostle Paul to go to the Gentiles to do what needed to be done and to present the gospel so that we could be rightly connected with God.

If you don't understand and know what a Gentile is, a Gentile is someone who is not a Jew.

Okay, so let's get on into it.

Let's go back and start at verse 8 now.

And it says, after he was found in terms of his outward appearance as a man for a divinely appointed time.

Now we're of course talking about Jesus Christ who gave up his authority in heaven and came down to the earth for mankind to go to the cross in a humanly fleshly body.

He gave up immortality so that he can become mortal and unfortunately had to taste death and suffered for the sins of the whole world.

Alright?

He humbled himself still further by becoming obedient to the Father.

Now, this is very important because we can't say that we believe in God, yet we do not follow Jesus Christ.

We don't walk in the righteousness such as Jesus Christ walked.

And we're going to talk about what that looks like.

The apostle Paul is going to go into detail, what that is all about.

Okay.

So Jesus became a mortal man.

But he tells us that he did not do anything that he did not see his father do in heaven.

Okay?

So everything he saw his father do, he did it.

He obeyed all the way down to death.

Okay, and this is what this is talking about to the Father, to the up, to the point of death, even death on the cross, for this reason also, because look at this, he obeyed and so completely humbled himself.

God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.

We all quote this scripture, and it is very real.

So that at the name of Jesus, he's quoting from the Old Testament here because now he's in all caps.

So this is giving us the indication that it's coming from the Old Testament.

This part of it, every knee shall bow in submission of those who are in heaven and on the earth and under the earth.

All those who are in hell, when he comes here, they are going to bow.

They are going to recognize that he is indeed the Christ that came the first time around.

He is indeed the eternal king, promised to the throne of David.

Okay?

One of the Jewish covenants that was given to Israel that there will be an everlasting king to take the throne of David.

Alright now.

So every knee shall bow in heaven, on earth, and under the under the earth.

Verse 11, and that every tongue will confess.

Not by maybe confess.

No, every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, sovereign God.

Okay.

Many people try to argue this about who he is.

He is God in every way.

Even though he could have claimed equality to God, he gave up that equality, and the Bible tells us he became lower than the angels for a time.

They're going to show you how much humility that he walked in and humbleness that he walked in.

When he could have very well wiped out everyone that came up against him, the people that he created.

Let that sink in for a minute.

We talked about that in John chapter 1.

John 1 · chapter mention

So he is the sovereign God to the glory of who?

God the Father.

Because him and God are one.

He is the very essence of the Godhead.

We talked about that in Colossians chapter 2, verses 8 through 9.

Colossians 2:8–9

So it says, So then, here goes the apostle Paul, my dear ones, just as you have always, look at this, obeyed my instructions with enthusiasm, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence.

Continue to work out your salvation.

That is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursuing spiritual maturity with all inspired fear and trembling, using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ.

Now, boy, that was a lot said right there.

Now we can't earn our salvation because salvation is a free gift.

Okay.

But we do have to do a walk check, ladies and gentlemen.

And most Christians do not get to this level because they don't understand how to work out their own salvation.

So just like when you exercise, and we're going to go to these scriptures and you discipline your body to go exercise every morning or in the evening or at nighttime, whenever you're most comfortable doing it, and you keep habitually doing it, eventually you will begin to see the results that will come from the consistent exercising physically that you're doing.

Well, this is the same way that we have to apply that same analogy to our spiritual walk in the Lord.

Okay?

And we're going to go to some scriptures and talk about what it means to actually fear God.

Yes, there is a certain tremble that we should have because we know God is the only God.

He created us.

Jesus said himself, do not be afraid of what man can do to your flesh, but be afraid of what God can do eternally to your soul.

Okay?

And so there is a certain level of fear in that regard, but this type of fear, ladies and gentlemen, that the apostle Paul is talking about is a certain reverence, a love for God to the point to where you don't want to offend God in any way.

He's very plain in that part right here when he says, not doing anything to offend God in our walk.

Okay?

So let's go to some scriptures and let's start looking at for a minute.

Fearing the Lord.

The first place I want to go is to I want to go to Exodus chapter 20.

I want to go to Exodus chapter 20.

Exodus 20 · chapter mention

The people are getting ready to meet God, and Moses is getting them prepared to do so.

Moses has been the mediator of sorts between Israel and God.

But now they are getting to finally get the opportunity to meet him personally, with respect, of course, because the Bible says that God warned Moses to let them know do not touch the mountain, or they would fall dead.

So it was very serious.

You have to be very show reverent respect for the Lord.

Sorry it's taking me a little longer to get there, but let's go to Exodus chapter 20.

And I want to look at verses 15 through 20, where it talks about the definition of the fear of the Lord and what that does for us when we walk in this fear.

Okay.

And that what I'm talking about is not a fear so much as the trembling that you're going to see them go through, the fear and trembling of being afraid and trembling.

But it mainly represents a love for God that keeps us from walking the consistent paths of sin.

Okay?

So let's go to it.

Verse 15, and it says, You shall not steal secretly, openly, fraudulently, or through carelessness, you shall not testify falsely, that is lie withhold or manipulate the truth against your neighbor.

Any person.

You shall not covet, that is, selfishly desire and attempt to acquire your neighbor's house.

You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Now he's going over some commandments here as he's preparing the people to meet God.

Okay, now it says, now all the people witnessed the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the smoking mountain.

And as they looked, the people were afraid and they trembled and moved backward and stood at a safe distance.

Now here goes Moses trying to comfort their hearts.

Then they said to Moses, You speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak to us, or we will die.

And here goes Moses.

Moses said to the people, Do not be afraid, for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of him that is a profound reverence for him will remain with you so that you do not what?

Sin.

That is the whole purpose of walking in the fear of the Lord.

It is not so much the burden of walking out commandments, ladies and gentlemen.

Jesus said that love is the fulfillment of being able to walk out commandments.

And it is because our love for God that allows us to not want to sin against our neighbor, to not want to steal from our neighbor, to not want to covet our neighbor's wife or husband or whatever the case may be.

It is love that we are walking in.

And that love allows us to walk in the awe-inspired, reverent fear of the Lord.

And this is what Moses is getting at here.

Yes, these people had a fear and a trembling for the things that they saw, the thunder and the lightning and all of those things flashing from the mountain.

But Moses was trying to get them to look past that into growing into a love for God to the point to where they would not only live lives in public that was righteous, but they will live lives also in private.

Because who you are in private, ladies and gentlemen, God is more concerned with than in the public.

Because you can turn on the lights and look like somebody totally different.

But in your private life, you're doing everything opposite of God's word.

So who you are with God in private, God looks at more importantly than who you are in the public.

And this is what that all fear reverent, that reverent fear of God is your relationship with Him.

That you know that He's always watching.

Okay?

Uh Matter of fact, let's go to Genesis chapter 17 and look at verse 1.

And watch what God says to Abraham here.

When it comes to integrity, having a living a right life in private.

Because God is always watching.

Watch what he says Abraham here.

Now, Abraham, of course, is not Abraham at this point.

He's still Abram.

His name has God has not given him the new name Abraham just yet, meaning Father of Nations.

Alright now, so let's go to uh Genesis chapter 17.

Watch what it says.

When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, Watch this, I am God Almighty.

Walk habitually before me with integrity, meaning having habits of righteousness.

Okay?

That's what that means.

Not just having habits of righteousness when people are watching, but having those habits of righteousness in your private life as well.

Knowing that you are always, look at this, in my presence.

God is always watching us.

And be blameless and complete in obedience to me.

And when you are walking in obedience, then what he would do for Abram.

I will establish my covenant, everlasting promise between me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly through your descendants.

Alright?

Then Abram fell on his face in worship, and God spoke with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and as a result, you shall be the father of many nations.

Okay?

No longer shall your name be Abram, exalted father.

Look at this, now his name is getting ready to change.

But your name shall be Abraham, father of a multitude, for I will make you the father of many nations.

So now we see Abram.

As God is admonishing him to walk in integrity before him, knowing that he is always in God's presence.

Always.

And this is what walking in the fear of the Lord is, ladies and gentlemen.

I want to go down to Job.

I want to go to Job chapter 2 as we continue to talk about this fear of the Lord.

Job 2 · chapter mention

And of course, we know the story of Job.

Job was a righteous man before God.

God knew he was righteous.

And God allowed Satan to test him.

To get him to curse God, because this is what Satan wanted to do.

Get him to curse God.

And Satan put some hard tests on him.

Took his whole family, seven his wife.

The man had ten children, all ten of them died.

Seven sons, three daughters.

All ten of them died.

Okay?

Took his whole herd, sheep, cattle, all of that.

Took all his riches from him.

Stripped him of his health.

But yet, this man, despite all of that, even with the first thing that happened with his family, the Bible says he praised God.

And that's some serious faith.

His wife tried to get him to curse God and die.

Why are you still trying to hold uphold to this integrity before the Lord?

Look what he has allowed to be done to you.

Curse him and die.

Job refused to do so.

Now Job did curse his own life.

He wanted to be out of here.

He was going through some agony.

Satan was putting it on him.

But many of us know the account.

Survived all of that.

And he ended up with a double portion.

Lived to be over a hundred, I think, 40 years old.

So he had a new family and everything.

All things were restored to him double abundantly.

Alright?

But let's look at this what God, when God is talking to Satan here again.

God is talking to Satan another time.

And they had a couple of conversations about Job.

After the first test, you know, losing the family.

Satan comes back talking to God again and say, Look, okay, well, he didn't fall, succumbed to that.

Okay, well, I'm gonna do something else to him.

God said, okay, go ahead, but you can't touch his life, you can't take his life from him.

I'm gonna allow you to get close to it.

And he did.

Okay.

And so here now we have in Job chapter 2.

We want to look at the first six verses here.

And it reads, Again there was a day when the sons of God, the angels, now you know your amplified Bible helps you with that, knowing who the sons of God is in this in this instance, came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan, adversary accuser, also came among them to present himself before the Lord.

Now, far as we know tonight, Satan still has this access.

But there's gonna come a time, I believe, in Revelation chapter 12, where he will no longer have this access.

He will be kicked out of heaven permanently, him and his demonic friends.

And they will be kicked down here to the earth and they will run rampant and live high and almighty.

For a short time, for at least three and a half years, before Jesus comes back and finally strips them about all that.

Okay.

But Satan, you can see, had access to still get into heaven, speak to God, talk to God about people.

He talked to them, him about you, talk to him about you.

Neither one of us is exempt.

We saw this when he tried to come against Joshua in the book of Zachariah, if I'm not mistaken.

But Jesus rebuked him, took Joshua out of those dirty rags in semblance of us.

We're dirty, we need to be clean.

And Jesus cleaned us up.

And this was a pure representation of him being the mediator and our lawyer in defense of what Satan tried to tries to accuse us of.

Okay.

So Satan now comes to God.

Verse 2 the Lord said to Satan, From where have you come?

Then Satan answered the Lord.

From roaming around on the earth and from walking around on it.

The Lord said to Satan, Have you considered and reflected on my servant Job?

For there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man.

Watch this.

One who fears God.

Now he's gonna tell us what that means with reverence and abstains from, watch this, and turns away from evil because he honors God.

And still he maintains and holds tightly to his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without cause.

Satan answered the Lord, skin for skin, yes, a man will give all he has for his life.

But put forth your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and severely afflict him, and he will curse you to your face.

So the Lord said to Satan, Behold, he is in your hands, only spare his life.

So now Satan wants to continue testing Job by applying sickness to his body.

But as you can see, God knew who Job was.

He knew Job was not going to succumb to it.

For the man to still praise God, even though he lost all his children, all his riches.

God was still at the center of his life.

And these are the people that God looks for, ladies and gentlemen.

This is what the reverent fear is.

He honored God still, even to the point of all of that happening to him.

And this is why God will test us, because he wants to see.

When he's not giving us what we are asking for just yet, are we gonna still uphold to who we are in him?

We get through those tests, ladies and gentlemen, God will bless us.

Does that mean he's gonna make you an instant millionaire overnight?

No, it does not.

But God will forever be your God, and you will forever be his child.

And he will look after you.

You will continue to walk in his divine protection.

He will make sure you are taken care of even when things aren't going right with the rest of the world.

You are still in good shape.

And when we uphold to that type of integrity and still walk upright even when things aren't going right, that says a lot to the Father about who we truly are in character as he continues to grow us in him.

And this is what that fear is.

I want to keep on jumping on this fear of the Lord.

Let's go to 1 John.

1 John, and I told you we read a lot of scripture over here, and I do that on purpose, so you'll have plenty of weapons that you can use to help you.

Let's go to 1 John.

John is going to give us a distinction between those who are truly belonging to God and who are not.

You can't get no plainer than this.

You can't get any plainer than this.

If you had any questions about if you belong to God or not, you can't get any plainer than what we're about to see here starting in verse 10.

I want to start in verse 10, and we're going to conclude in verse 12.

Conclude in verse 12.

Watch this.

Watch what John says here about the distinction between God's own and Satan's own.

By this, the children of God and the children of the devil, look at this, are clearly identified.

Look how they are identified, ladies and gentlemen.

Anyone who does not practice righteousness.

Now listen, when you're in your wilderness season, this is the purpose for the wilderness season.

This is the purpose for grace in that wilderness season.

God knows you're not gonna be fixed overnight.

Just man falls seven times but gets back up again.

He has godly sorrow.

He understands about repentance.

The apostle Paul goes to great lengths telling us about habits that he don't want to do but still finding himself doing.

It's those consistent patterns that have to be broken.

And when you're in your wilderness season, this is the purpose for that wilderness season so that God can help you break through the Holy Spirit those consistent sinful patterns that don't line up with his image of his son.

So he understands all of this, but we can't continue walking that same way forever.

We have to begin to seek out spiritual maturity, such as the apostle Paul admonished the churches of Philippi to do.

And he's admonishing us today.

And this is what John is talking about.

Anyone who does not practice righteousness, who does not seek God's will in thought, action, and purpose is not of God.

What is righteousness?

We're walking in the ways of Jesus Christ.

We're walking obedient to the word.

Okay?

He says, Nor is the one who does not unselfishly love his believing brother.

You can't say you know God and you don't love your neighbor.

You don't love your brother, you don't love your sister in Christ.

How do you show them love?

By walking in righteousness.

Leading them not in the way of sin, but leading them away from sin.

Alright, so now, for this is the message what you believers have heard from the beginning of your relationship with Christ, that we should unselfishly love and seek the best for one another, and not be like Cain, who was of the evil one, and murdered his brother Abel.

And why did he murder him?

Because Cain's deeds were evil and his brothers were righteous.

His brothers were righteous.

Listen, Cain wanted to kill his brother.

He indulged in evil.

He welcomed evil in his life and went with it.

Ladies and gentlemen, what did it say about Job?

He turned away from evil.

His foot did not run toward evil, it ran away from it because he honored and respected God.

That's the love that we have.

That's what being in the reverent fear of God is.

Now, let's go now over to the apostle Paul, and then we'll try to get back over here to Philippians.

Because the Apostle Paul is going to say something similar about practicing and walking in righteousness.

The same analogy that I used about physical exercise, the Apostle Paul is going to say it right here for us.

1 Timothy 4, 6 through 7.

Watch what it says here.

If you point out these instructions to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus.

Now, the apostle Paul is talking to Timothy.

He wrote these two books to Timothy 2.

Give him instructions on how to run his church.

Constantly nourished through the study of the word of faith and of the good Christian's doctrine, which you have closely followed.

So if he admonished the people to not only walk in righteousness, but to see him and view him as an example of walking in their righteousness, he will continue to be nourished with the study another word.

The word will continue to refresh him as he continues to refresh others with the word of God.

Alright, verse 7, but have nothing to do with irreverent folklore and silly myths.

On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.

Keeping yourself spiritually fit, practicing righteousness until it becomes a natural habit.

And the Holy Spirit helps us with that.

Verse 8, for physical training is of some value.

Not saying that you shouldn't do it.

It's great for your body.

But watch this.

But God in this spiritual training is of value in everything and in every way since it holds promise for not only this life, the present life, but for the life to come.

I continue to stress this.

We don't wait till we get to heaven to walk righteously.

We walk righteously because we're already citizens of heaven right now.

And even though we don't feel it and we're not there physically yet, does not exempt us from walking in that righteousness on full display for people who are watching us.

Alright?

Now, now that we've gone through that, and hopefully you got an understanding now what the fear of the Lord is.

It is having a developed love for God in such a way that you don't do things that don't show and exemplify who God is in your life.

Alright?

Now, so let's keep going.

Let's get back over here to Philippians.

Let's get over here to verse 13.

It says, For it is not your strength.

See this?

But it is his.

Who's helping us?

The Holy Spirit.

God who is effectually at work in you, both to will and to work.

That is strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose for his good pleasure.

He gives us the Holy Spirit that helps us to walk according to his will and stay in his divine will.

We don't question the sovereignty of God, how God has already pre-planned for us our walk.

We walk in that plan, we're gonna be fine.

We get out of the walk of that plan, we're gonna be in trouble.

Okay?

Alright now.

So let's keep going.

Verse 14 do everything without murmuring or questioning.

Here we go, the providence of God.

So that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and guilous, innocent and uncontaminated children of God without blemish, in the midst of a morally crooked and spiritually perverse generation among whom you are seen as bright lights, beacons shining out clearly in the world of darkness.

So we are to walk in a way where we're not compromising who we are and conforming to the world.

The word says, be not conformed to the ways of this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and we renew our mind through the word, which means we're no longer walking the paths such as we once used to walk in the world, and we are to keep protective guard on our walk in such a way that we don't allow the world to make us compromise who we are in God.

Okay, and the apostle Paul is being explicitly clear on this.

Because we live in an evil and perverse world that does whatever they want, and they don't understand the spiritual things, nor can they discern those things of God.

Alright, now watch this holding out an offering to everyone the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to rejoice greatly because I did not run my race in vain nor labor without result.

Now, the apostle Paul discipled many people, but he did have some concerns about a few people.

And when he got to God, that they they weren't showing the examples that he gave them.

Paul knows he gets credit for these things.

And many of us, when we walk in the way we're supposed to, and we are discipling, we've taken this Bible, we've taken responsibility for living out this Bible.

We will be having to make an account for the people that we spoke this word to.

And if we cause them to stumble in any kind of way, we will be judged for that.

The apostle Paul was not only concerned about his own salvation, he was concerned about those he discipled.

And this is why he was telling them so that he would be able to stand there like, Yes, Lord, I did what you asked me to do, and look at my faithful, faithful ones who have followed my example.

Okay?

And this is what the apostle Paul is talking about.

Keep your walk straight, so that I will have many great things to talk about when I come before the Lord on your behalf.

So let's keep going.

But even if I am, verse 17, being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith for preaching the message of salvation, still I rejoice and share my joy with you all.

Now we know the apostle Paul is coming close to his death at this point.

He's giving it everything he had, he's poured out everything he's had.

Okay, and this is why he talks about man, hey, you know, give me something to rejoice about so that my race is not in vain.

That I led you right.

Alright now, you too rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.

But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, so that I may also be encouraged by learning news about you, that they are continuing to walk in the faith.

The apostle Paul is in prison at this time, so he is unable to come and be with them again as he once was.

So he's gonna send Timothy on the way.

He's all going to also gonna send another friend on the way to make sure everything is going good.

The word is continuing to go forth, they're continuing to spiritually grow.

And the people in Philippi were some of the most spiritually mature people.

The only situation they had, and we're gonna see that later on, is two women bickering amongst one another.

Okay, and that's pretty much it for the most part.

So he's gonna send Timothy verse 20, for I have no one else like him who is so kindred a spirit who will be genuinely concerned for your spiritual welfare.

Now we're gonna stop right there.

I don't I don't want to go too much further.

We're gonna come back and pick up in 21.

But many of you who know about Timothy, uh, he was probably about 20 years old when the apostle Paul uh took him under his wing and showed him the way.

Uh, his father was Greek, and he was Gentile, in other words, and his mother was Jew.
