Well hallelujah, has he been good to you?

He's been really good, give him the best praise you can.

How good has he been?

Thank you Jesus.

Amen, he's a good, good God.

You can be seated in the house of the Lord today.

Well hallelujah, man it's a wonderful atmosphere in here.

Feel the presence of the Lord.

Amen.

You have a good Thanksgiving, family all around, everybody behave themselves and all that good

stuff.

Sometimes they do and sometimes you just have to put them out in the yard.

Amen, they'll be alright.

They'll come back in.

So much to be thankful for.

Amen.

I preached my own self into an attitude adjustment last week so hallelujah, it's been a great

week in the Lord.

Sometimes you just have to dial on up don't you?

Amen.

Continue to pray for God's faithfulness over your lives and his blessings into your life

as we're coming to the close of another year.

Next Sunday of December it does not seem like that's where we should be.

25 is just around the corner isn't it?

And who'd have thought, I thought for sure we'd be in glory by now.

Shouting on the streets of cold over with all of this.

But the Lord knows doesn't he?

Father I love you this morning.

Well thankful for the opportunity to come before you, before your people, to speak blessings

over their lives for financial well-being.

As they worship in the giving of the tithe and the offering, faithful to you, you are

faithful to us.

You supply all of our need according to your riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

So with that I pray for jobs and better jobs and increases.

Checks in the mail, refunds, rebates.

The best sales in town.

It's Christmas time.

Bless your people in Christ's name.

Isaiah 9 and John 1, so good to see you in the house of the Lord today.

I'm so thankful for Pastor Brian not throwing me under the bus on your little calendar thing,

your event schedule.

I called him, did a little conference call with him yesterday and said hey I'm going

to change the calendar.

So that adjustments on there.

What that is is instead of doing our candlelight communion on that Wednesday evening of Christmas

Eve, I'm going to make that part of our Sunday morning the 22nd part of our service that

day.

So we're not doing away with anything, we're just joining days doing it.

That way you don't have to fuss because Pastor had you come back out on Christmas Eve.

Oh I know, I know.

Well it's good but my Lord why do you have to do it on Christmas Eve?

I enjoy doing it but it's Christmas Eve.

Don't he know it's Christmas Eve?

Well let's go have communion then we'll get back.

You know why I know that's how it goes because I used to say that.

I've not always been a pastor you know.

I used to be one of you and so I know what we used to say about pastors doing stuff like

that.

So I thought well we're going to combine that together since it's so close to Christmas.

Is that alright?

Isaiah, did I tell you how good it was to see you in the house of the Lord today?

If I did not you look lovely today so thank you for being here.

Except for this bunch over here, they gone.

My left hand balcony folk thank you.

The center section and the right, we'll pray for them.

Oh they gone.

They not even in the building.

Isaiah 9 verse 2 reads, the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.

Isaiah 9:2

They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death upon them hath the light shined.

Verse 6 reads, for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and the government

shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor.

The mighty God, the everlasting father, the prince of peace, of the increase of his government

and peace there shall be no end upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom to order it,

to establish it with judgment, with justice from henceforth even forever the zeal of the

Lord of hosts will perform this.

John's gospel reads verse 1, you know it well.

In the beginning was the word, the word was God, the word was with God and the word was

God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him, without him was not anything made that was made.

In him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shineth in darkness and

the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John, the same came for a witness to bear

witness of the light that all men through him might believe.

He was not that light but was sent to bear witness of that light.

That was the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world and the world was made by him and the world knew him not.

He came into his own and his own received him not but as many as received him to them

gave he power to become the sons of God even to them that believe on his name which were

born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God.

And the word was made flesh and the world among us and we beheld his glory, the glory

as the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.

I just want to talk for a little while this morning on the subject of the wonderful light,

the wonderful light.

Father, I love you this morning so thankful and grateful for the unction you've given

me today.

Lord, just anoint you servant this morning as we endeavor to edify the body and glorify

your name.

And truly Lord may we leave here today saying it was good to be in the house of the Lord,

to be touched by your presence, to worship you in spirit and in truth.

To you be praised forever in Christ's name.

And the church said, Amen, you can be seated.

The wonderful light.

I don't know about you but the Christmas season has kind of caught me a little bit off guard.

It's fully here, Thanksgiving being so near the end of November.

It has hardly given us the opportunity to prepare for all that Christmas involves.

Seems as though we get a week or so and then December's on us.

But not this year.

It was so late.

I mean it's here.

Today's the first of December and Thanksgiving, your Black Friday, some of you still not

over that, not caught up on your sleep from doing all that stuff.

But we are now full blown into the Christmas season.

I know they've tried to, I saw a little thing in somebody's yard the other day of a snowman

sitting on top of a turkey.

I thought, well that's pretty funny.

And that's about the truth.

But we're here now and today begins part of the liturgical season, the practice for the

church known as Advent.

Now I, over my 30 years of pastoral ministry, I've never been and have not been one to get

too deeply involved in the liturgical practices and issues of the church.

But my heart's been drawn this year at a greater level to this, the idea of this Advent.

We don't have our wreath and candles yet.

We will.

That's the part of it that I'm really not all that hoopla about, but we will do that

on the 22nd.

That's going to be part of our service that day.

But the idea of Advent, I think we need to have our attention drawn to, whether so much

with the practices of the liturgical part of it.

But I think we really need to focus.

I know, let me just speak from pastor's perspective.

I need to be redrawn, not that I haven't been in the past, but that I do this thing in the

order I think that God would have us to do and to see and to think about this upcoming

Christmas season.

And this prepares us and lays us the foundation so that when we finally get to Christmas Eve,

we are fully aware of why we are celebrating.

Amen?

And I know we are and I know you are, but you also and I know how we can get caught

up in the commercialization of Christmas and all that that encompasses.

And not that it's a bad thing, but it can be a distracted thing and keep us away from

the full purpose of what Christmas is all about.

And when we think about Advent, it comes from a Latin word, which means to come to, to come

to.

The purpose of Advent is to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the unexpected nature of

it as well as all and to serve as a reminder that we are to prepare for the second coming.

If how many of you believe Christ was born?

Amen.

How many of you then therefore believe that Christ is coming again?

So the Advent doesn't just point us to Christ's birth, but he is to come to this earth again.

Amen.

And so Christmas is as much about resurrection as it is about anything else.

The whole and the entirety of the birth of Christ, the life of Christ, the death of Christ,

the resurrection of Christ and the soon appearing of Christ is all encompassed in the entirety

of his story and the entirety of his life.

You can't see one without seeing the other for you and I, I feel like I'm going to ask

us to begin to read Luke as our readings up to Christmas, up to Christmas, the book of

Luke.

I want us to read it in reverse order.

There's 24 chapters and there's 24 more days and then Christmas Eve is there.

And so, and I think if we begin to read Luke in reverse order, I think that's what I'm

going to do for my Advent reading.

I'm reading the book of Luke in reverse order and it's going to put me in Luke one on the

very Eve of Christmas.

And I think reading in reverse is going to cause a little bit of stirring in our mind

to be how grateful we are for his coming.

For when we see how bad things are and how bad things will and we read that in reverse

order and we get to his birth, we are even more grateful for his coming.

Amen.

Because we have read of his soon return and of his coming and the reason why he came to

begin with.

The reason of the Advent was for the Christ to come to, to come to the earth.

He had to come to the earth in that manger and he's coming to the earth again one day

to step off the steed of glory, to put his feet down on the Mount of Olives to which

it will be split in two.

Hallelujah.

And we usher ourselves into the end of the glorious reign of Jesus Christ.

And so we cannot think about Advent without thinking about the totality of who Christ

is and why he came to begin with.

But we take that unexpected appearance of Christ and the nature of that coming and the

incarnation and we let it soak and we begin to marinate and let it serve as a reminder

that he will come again.

I know how it happens and I know it's so easy.

We get so caught up in life and we get so caught up in living and we fail to remind

ourselves that today could be the day that the Lord comes again.

Today could be the day that the trumpet sounds.

And the archangel gives us the shout of attention and the clouds be opened up and we be carried

home.

Let it serve as a reminder of the advent of his birth as the advent of his return will

be just as literal and be just as real.

Hallelujah.

And let our hearts be prepared for the return of the Lord.

Say how can you preach on resurrection at Christmas?

It all goes together.

Amen.

And as we live through the troubles and the trials and the tribulations of our current

living and our current existence, wars and rumors of wars, and it tells us why he came

to begin with such a unique way.

Typically there will be and when the time comes there are four candles within this advent

wreath.

Each one of them representing something beautiful and something wonderful for the believer.

The first candle is that.

It's a purple candle, three purples and a pink.

The purple candle that we light first would be to remind us of hope.

It's also known as the prophecy candle.

And when we begin to think about the prophecy of the Lord of his first coming, we begin

to think about how the Spirit of God, the Holy Ghost would move upon men of old and

urge them and prompt them to speak concerning the first advent that the Lord's coming to

the earth.

And it reminds me of some wonderful and powerful things when I think about the prophecies of

the Messiah's birth and the hope that that's going to bring to the world.

That's the whole point.

He came to bring hope to a lost and dying world, to a humanity that was absent without

his presence.

He came that he would bridge the chasm between sin and God the Father.

Hallelujah.

Let that sink in for a moment.

He came to the earth to bridge across the chasm of our sin, his wonderful grace, so

that we may know in free part and in upright relationship with the Father.

Hallelujah.

For without the shedding of his blood, there is no remission of our sin.

And without a manger, there would never have been a Calvary's cross, but because of the

manger and the nature of the hope that is instilled in our heart and life, the Old Testament

prophets would warn us and encourage us to be watching into the darkness is what Isaiah

said, a place that was shadowed over by sin and the grip of sin and the people that sat

in darkness.

There's a great light about to shine upon them.

He had to give them encouragement after encouragement.

He had to let them know that the time was going to soon approach.

Jeremiah, the prophet put it this way in the 23rd chapter, verse five, behold the days

come, saith the Lord that I will rise and raise unto David a righteous branch.

A king shall reign and prosper judgment and justice in the earth.

In his days, Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely and this is his name whereby

he shall be called the Lord our righteousness.

And you can look where Paul reassured us in first Corinthians one and 30 that Jesus Christ

is the Lord our righteousness.

God had to speak through men of old and begin to tell and to warn and to prophesy that hope

was coming into the world as dark as it was and his name shall be called wonderful and

counselor and mighty God into that darkness.

This marvelous light is going to come to illuminate the heartache of mankind, the hopelessness

of humanity.

This bright light is going to shine on those who are sitting in darkness.

I'm telling you it was dark.

It was dark then when Isaiah prophesied.

It was dark when Jesus was born and it's dark today but cause of his light that illuminates

with hope.

The darkness has been pushed aside and light now illuminates the light of men.

We think about all the prophecies of the Old Testament concerning his birth.

Isaiah would say in 714, therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign.

The Lord himself, you're not going to believe it from anybody else.

So the Lord himself shall give you a sign and he went on to say, behold, a virgin shall

conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel being interpreted God with us.

Now how else would those hard hearted people and stiff neck people of his get a grip on

reality and God's word and God's promise without God himself giving them a sign and no other

sign could be given that they would fully get a hold of than God being with them.

And the only way that God could be with him is that he sent himself among us and the way

that he would do that could not be through the tainted flesh totally of humanity and

the seed of man which brought sky.

I'm preaching better than you're shouting now.

The seed of man that would relay sin from one to the other could not get the job done.

So Mary, that little damsel who had never known a man, the Holy Ghost moved upon her

and planted the seed of the righteous son of the living God so that the incarnated God

would come into this world fully God and fully fleshed but untainted by the sin of.

I'm talking about a wonderful light.

I didn't realize I was going to get this worked up about the light, but I'm totally worked

up this morning.

I ate smoked turkey and it took some of that lethargy out of it.

Smoked turkey instills joy and happiness.

That old oven baked stuff just brings you down.

The light, this marvelous light is coming into darkness.

Isaiah said where men are sitting in darkness, all of a sudden this light is going to come

in and begin to shine.

There's a light that's coming.

You know there's really no definition for darkness other than the absence of light.

Light is measurable by speed.

Hallelujah.

Light is measurable by brightness and illumination factor.

These over your head are 5,000 lumen cut in half for 2,500.

If we lit it up we would probably all go out here glowing.

Darkness is not measured except by the absence of light.

I'm working my way to John.

Micah 5 2.

We got to get this prophecy candle lit.

Hello?

Micah 5 2.

Behold, you bethe him Ephrathah.

Though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be

ruler over Israel whose origins are from of old and from ancient times.

My Lord, the prophet said there's one coming from old, from ancient times.

How can he still be alive?

How could he come into this world?

How could a virgin bring an ancient one into this world?

I'm going to tell you why because it's the wonderful mystery of the grace and the power

of God Almighty.

That's the reason he said for me myself, I'm going to do this so that you can just scratch

your head.

There's no way that you're going to take responsibility for what I'm about to do.

And oh Bethlehem, he's coming from you.

Oh Bethlehem, the star will shine over you.

Oh Bethlehem, it will be there that in labor she mourns and groans and brings into this

world the light of the glorious life of man.

Hallelujah.

Hope comes in the form of light.

Matthew will tell you the genealogy and Matthew will repeat to you Isaiah's prophecy that

the light's coming into the darkness where they that sit and dwell.

Get ready.

You're not going to believe it when it happens, but it's going to happen.

Matthew gives us his lineage.

Luke shares of us of his glorious birth and the angelic announcement.

Mark just gets right to work with his ministry, but John introduces us to his incarnate divinity.

It's his own.

It's his own narrative.

It's his own nativity description, but it's so much more than shepherd sitting on side

of the hill.

Amen.

It's so much more than the angelic announcement on earth peace and goodwill toward men.

Why?

Because on earth that night peace personified in the bodily form of Jesus Christ, the son

of the living God was made present and announced.

Hallelujah.

But John gives you a different introduction into who this Christ child is and who the

one that was born of a virgin really is.

And he said, in the beginning, what's the word?

Hallelujah.

And he begins to bring about this descriptive of the word of ancient times for from the

foundations of the world, the Christ was slain before yet he was even born into this world.

How do we get an ancient one in current events?

Because the ancient one had always been.

He is the ancient of days.

Hallelujah.

He is the rose of Sharon and he is the glorious day star that shines on us.

How would the Magi know to look for a star other than it was foretold that there would

be a star?

And John begins to give you this wonderful look into the deity of the one that was laid

in swaddling clothes in a manger on that Bethlehem eve when it was announced the Christ was born.

He tells you that he was the word and in the beginning he was always and the same was God.

And he began to tell you that all things were made by him for nothing is coming to existence

without him because he is all things in existence.

And John begins to tell you about this marvelous light that has now been placed upon the earth.

And he begins to describe him how things were made by him.

In him was life and in him the life was the light of men.

Somebody just got to hear for.

I just called somebody and left him a nice long voicemail.

This is here for time purposes.

I don't even know why I bring it because I don't really pay much attention to it.

It's for your comfort that I'm at least looking.

In him was life and the life was the light of men and the light shineth into darkness

and the darkness comprehended it not.

His wonderful light is the hope of the present and the expectation of the future that we

know exists in him.

And it illuminates my every day without that hope without the hope of this first advent

orientation without this hope.

Where would we be?

We would have all been be most miserable if in this life only we did not have the hope

that we have in Christ but because of the hope that we have in him we are not miserable

but we are able to rejoice.

And again I say rejoice because of the hope that exists in him.

There's so many hopeless situations and circumstances that are introduced into our life according

to our own power to merit to have them perform but not in his.

And I have the hope resting in him because of the light that is in him is the life that

is in me.

Hallelujah and into the darkness and the gloom of my everyday existence they steal the glorious

radiant life of Jesus Christ to come to the advent to come to my aid.

That's why he came to come to provide when I need provision to come to protect when I

need protection to come to deliver when I need deliverance to come to bring joy when

I'm down and out when the oil needs to be applied that I may rejoice in him over and

over again to come to the aid of humanity.

And he came he came his wonderful light again is the hope of the present and the expectation

of the future.

And into the darkness he came.

Verse five of our text from John's writing and the light shine within darkness and the

darkness comprehended it not comprehend is a little bit hard to catch hold of there.

It means apprehend and the darkness apprehended it not what the light you get on down into

the Greek on it.

It's a it's a it's a word that I don't really know if I pronounce it right but you'll get

the gist of it.

Kata lamba no I won't sound Italian instead of Greek.

Put a little Spanish flare on it.

Kata lamba no with a hyphen over the O at the end.

It's the word in the original utterance.

Kata means to cause to come down.

It's a compound word.

The word lamba no means to seize or to take or to grasp.

My God somebody or just got a hold of that.

And the darkness Kata lamba no couldn't get a grip.

Couldn't take a firm enough hold to bring the light down.

And darkness couldn't overcome the light.

Darkness couldn't do away with the light.

Darkness couldn't suspend the light and the darkness cast just not down the light.

Light dispels.

Darkness flees.

Darkness dare approach light.

Do I really have to preach all that just to get you to clap your hands and say amen.

Darkness comprehended apprehended couldn't get a grasp to bring down the light.

This wonderful light.

And might I add greater is he that's in you than he that is in this world.

Could I add to you the hope that you have as Christ Jesus living in you.

What does that mean if Christ is in you becomes the hope of glory then the hope of glory cannot

be grasped and cast down.

I'll keep preaching it till you get it.

You're going to make it.

Hold on child of God because the light that is in you darkness couldn't comprehend it.

Darkness couldn't apprehended.

Darkness couldn't get a grasp on it to bring it down.

So if it can't go down you're not going down.

Lift up your head because the wonderful light of the glorious Christ lives in you.

He come to you.

And him was life and the life was the light of me and the light shineth in darkness and

the darkness comprehended it not.

I hope any time you hear that or read that this morning floods into your mind.

Correct pronunciation or not it still means the same.

What are you saying greater is he that's in you than he that's in this world.

Christmas can be one of the most depressing times of the year and it's because of what

has been twisted into what I can't give what I can't do.

Right.

Oh we'd love to if we all had the financing we just give everybody something.

Right.

And because you don't does not mean that alleviates the advent Christ's coming because you can't

give everybody what they want.

Socks still work.

I told you that last week.

If you can't do that give them a hug around the neck and a great I love you.

I mean just look at yourself and laugh because the options that we have.

The odds of them working out the way we want them to don't seem to be so great sometimes.

So it's matter whether the life or the joy of the Lord is your strength and we're going

to need all we can get to get through.

But do not allow the oppressiveness of this season to cause you to miss the advent.

Hello.

It doesn't matter if you give anybody anything but a hard time.

Amen.

Aggravate the life out of them do something.

But do not get depressed because Christmas is coming.

You've got people that get on every side of things.

That's a pagan holiday.

Nothing pagan about my Christ.

I'm sorry.

If that's your opinion please keep yourself around me because I'm going to tell you right

quick.

Nothing pagan about Christmas for me.

Well I didn't when he was born.

Nobody knows when he was born so it's as good a day as the next.

It's as good a day as any to celebrate the marvelous light that penetrated our and you

know why they chose it right because it's on the winter solstice.

It's the darkest season of the year.

So why not let a little light shine in the darkest season of the year.

Proclaim the advent.

Christ has come to the earth.

Man if I had known preaching this advent thing was this good I'd have been doing it twenty

nine years ago.

I mean I preach Jesus anyway but this makes it easy.

It's a four part sermon outline for you.

You better stay in so I'll quit.

I'm going to let you out early today.

You can beat the first Baptist over to wherever you're going today.

I know you have to wait on most Sundays but not today.

You're getting in unless unless you get down here unless you come into this altar needing

some light to penetrate your darkness and together the lights that illuminating in us

will surround each other.

Hallelujah and light a glow our lives for the hope of the advent not the one that is

already came but the one that is to come to the earth.

That's why I celebrate Bethlehem so greatly because Bethlehem means there's a Mount Olivet

coming.

Bethlehem means there's a Christ going to be standing in the clouds waiting.

That's what Bethlehem means.

Romans 15 13 says now the God of all hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.

Romans 8 24 for we are saved by hope.

Hebrews 6 19 which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast.

That's what it's all about.

The anchor for our souls.

The light has come to the earth for men that once sat in darkness.

This wonderful marvelous light came to the earth.

Father I love you this morning my lord I feel you right now.

I feel your presence in this house.

Lord over the hearts of humanity in this room today.

Light has come and it doesn't take a great flame to see darkness flee for even a spark

drives darkness away.

Darkness illuminate so into the darkness of life right now.

May hope become the sparks of illumination into the darkness that surrounds.

Lord I know the enemy is just trying to cast down but here this morning your word lifts

up.

Your word to encourage us.

Emmanuel.

Father Lord you're able to heal today.

To touch the tendon and the muscle in this hand.

Lord you're able to bring about a healing.

Lord you're able to rebuke and take authority over pain and discomfort today.

It's the light that we're seeking Lord the light that we need.
