  1. Thank you, man. The Bible says he's able to do

  2. exceeding abundant above all that we could ask

  3. or think of him. That if we will give, he will

  4. give back to us a good measure, pressed down,

  5. shaken together, and running over. That before

  6. we call out, he will answer, and while we are

  7. yet speaking, he will hear. He can do anything

  8. but fail. He goes before us in our tomorrows.

  9. He has been all in our yesterdays, and he is

  10. a very present help in time of need. How many

  11. could stand and say, I would not have made it

  12. if it had not been for the goodness of the Lord.

  13. It was He that woke me up this morning. He put

  14. my feet on the solid ground. He's put soundness

  15. in my mind, breath in my lungs, a heart that

  16. beats, a soul that is saved, a heaven that is

  17. before me. How many could raise their hands and

  18. testify and say, the Lord has been good to me

  19. today. Amen. How good it is to be in the house

  20. of the Lord today. And hope well it is good to

  21. be back with you. I think it's been about four

  22. or five years ago that I was here to preach.

  23. And it is an honor to be back with you on this

  24. Pastor Appreciation Sunday. And I know I don't

  25. have to say it. I know you know it. You are blessed

  26. with some of the finest and greatest pastors

  27. there is anywhere in the world. Amen. And so

  28. it is an honor to be here today. to celebrate

  29. Pastor Cliff and Sister Kathy. And again, they

  30. are the choicest, and as Brian said just a moment

  31. ago, they are the very, very best among us. I

  32. do have some nicknames for him. I won't run through

  33. all of those today, but he's got more nicknames

  34. than any other preacher I know. He obviously

  35. leads our covenant group, and we take every chance

  36. we get to express to him just how much we love

  37. him, and sometimes that feels like a dagger in

  38. the kidney. But we do appreciate and love him.

  39. He has to put up with us on a weekly basis. But

  40. he's the very best friend that I have. When I

  41. first met him, I couldn't stand him. I had some

  42. thoughts about him. I didn't like him. I saw

  43. him only from a distance. And I had a conversation

  44. with him. Still didn't know if I liked him. But

  45. I got to know him a little bit more, but he has

  46. become over the last, what, 12, 13 years that

  47. we've been friends. I don't have a better friend

  48. anywhere else in the world. If I'm going through

  49. something, he's the first one I call. Rarely

  50. do I make a weighty pastoral decision. That I

  51. don't seek his counsel and his advice. We have

  52. caught more crappie than I can care to count.

  53. We've killed turkeys. We've chased ducks. We've

  54. done about everything together. We've traveled

  55. all over the country. And what you see is what

  56. you get. He is a pastor's pastor. He is a friend's

  57. friend. And Sister Kathy has been right by his

  58. side. I don't know of a better couple. And they

  59. are worthy of all of the honor and respect that

  60. you all could pay to them today. Amen. Amen.

  61. I love you, my friend. Appreciate you. So we're

  62. going to go into the Word this morning. I know

  63. him well enough that he's had enough attention

  64. today, and he wants it. on the Lord and he wants

  65. the Lord to bless you all today. I had a conversation

  66. with him. He feels like I do. As a pastor, this

  67. is one of the most awkward days that you will

  68. have. You don't serve, you don't preach, you

  69. don't give of yourself for attention. You do

  70. it to see your people be edified and strengthened

  71. and to grow in relationship with the Lord. And

  72. so that's what we're going to do today. We're

  73. going to preach the word. If you have your Bibles,

  74. turn with me to the book of Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  75. We're going to begin in verse 1 and we're going

  76. to go to verse 5. A message I've entitled, Shepherds

  77. After His Heart. Shepherds After His Heart. You

  78. may recognize that verse. It's found in the book

  79. of Jeremiah. But as we read these verses that

  80. are before us, we see a sad state. We see a sad

  81. situation. The people are perishing. They're

  82. being taken advantage of. They're being robbed

  83. simply because there are no shepherds. Read with

  84. me, if you will, at verse 1 of chapter 34. The

  85. Bible says, The word came to me, the word of

  86. the Lord, Son of Man. Prophesy against the shepherds

  87. of Israel. Prophesy and say to them, even to

  88. the shepherds, thus says the Lord God, O you

  89. shepherds of Israel, you who have been feeding

  90. yourselves, should not the shepherds feed the

  91. sheep? You eat of the fat and you clothe yourselves

  92. with the wool. You slaughter the fat ones, but

  93. you do not feed the sheep. The weak you have

  94. not strengthened, the sick you have not healed,

  95. the injured you have not bound up. The strayed

  96. you have not brought back. The lost you have

  97. not sought. And with force and harshness you

  98. have ruled them. And so in verse 5, the Bible

  99. says, So they were scattered because there was

  100. no shepherd. Father, I pray that you would add

  101. blessing to your word. Lord, I know that there

  102. is honor upon this house because there is an

  103. honorable shepherd. There is one who seeks to

  104. strengthen and feed and clothe and to seek after

  105. the sheep of your pasture. That, Lord, he serves

  106. as a shepherd of this congregation. And, Lord,

  107. I pray that the most fruitful and most prosperous

  108. years of this church and the ministry are before

  109. them and not behind them. I pray over Sister

  110. Kathy and Brother Cliff today that your hand,

  111. your guiding light, anointing of the living God

  112. would be upon them as they lead this church.

  113. Father, as I stand behind this pulpit, I pray

  114. that same anointing would be upon me, that the

  115. unction of the Holy Ghost would guide my words.

  116. May it go to enlarge your people and to spread

  117. your glory. In Jesus' name we pray. And the church

  118. said, amen and amen. You may be seated. A pastor

  119. is called to be many things. A pastor is a...

  120. He's a prophet. He's a guiding light. He comes

  121. to lead and to guide the people of God. He's

  122. a preacher who would lift up his voice and declare

  123. the mysteries and the oracles and the deep things

  124. of God. That just as deep calleth unto deep,

  125. the preacher stands behind the pulpit and speaks

  126. the unfathomable mysteries and wisdom of God.

  127. He's a caretaker of souls. He is a counselor

  128. to those who are troubled and in hard and difficult

  129. times. But a pastor is only a pastor because

  130. of the sheep that are before him. A pastor without

  131. a sheep, a pastor without a congregation, a pastor

  132. with no people is no pastor at all. You can take

  133. the title if you would like, and you can call

  134. yourself by any name if you so choose. But if

  135. there are no people underneath your ministry,

  136. or if there are none that are being strengthened

  137. and edified by the work and the effort that you

  138. are accomplishing, then you are no pastor. But

  139. I say before you this morning that you are gifted

  140. with true and genuine pastors. That as I look

  141. out and I see this congregation on this beautiful

  142. fall Sunday morning that the Lord has made. As

  143. I have stood with you in this sanctuary and we

  144. have worshipped the true and living God together.

  145. As I have seen you lift holy hands to a holy

  146. God. As I have felt the presence and known the

  147. atmosphere of worship. here I can say with all

  148. assurance and confidence that you are a people

  149. of God because you have a pastor that has been

  150. called and anointed of God amen I believe with

  151. all of my heart that God has called and anointed

  152. and equipped Kathy and Cliff to lead this church

  153. and this congregation. In fact, I remember, I

  154. told you this a few years ago when I came to

  155. you. I remember the initial conversation that

  156. I had with him pertaining this church. We were

  157. in a duck blind out in Arkansas and he said,

  158. I just cannot get the Hopewell church off of

  159. my mind. He said, I drive by it occasionally.

  160. You know where he was pastoring, one of the largest

  161. churches in the state and one of the largest

  162. churches in the denomination. You just don't

  163. take the move that he made to leave what he left

  164. to come here unless you are seeking the will

  165. of God and not your own will. And I remember

  166. that conversation. He said, I just feel as though

  167. the Lord wants to do something there. I just

  168. feel a burden in my heart that I can't escape.

  169. I can't get away from. I believe the Lord is

  170. calling me here. And so we stand here this morning,

  171. hard to believe, seven years later. And I look

  172. out at this beautiful congregation. And I know

  173. all that the Lord has done these last years.

  174. last seven years. And I say truthfully and assuredly,

  175. it was the will of the Lord to bring them here

  176. as your pastors, as your shepherds, and as your

  177. leaders. Amen. In my conversations with them,

  178. I know the love and the devotion that they have

  179. for you. The concern that they have. The prayers

  180. that they have prayed. And so I stand before

  181. you this morning and I say they are worthy of

  182. all honor and respect and devotion that you can

  183. give to them. It is because they are not seeking

  184. their own wheels. It is because they are not

  185. seeking their own fame. It is because they are

  186. not looking to be lifted. lifted up in the eyes

  187. of man, that they are worthy of honor and devotion

  188. and respect. If you believe that, shout amen

  189. this morning. And so I want to talk about what

  190. it means to be a shepherd. When we open up the

  191. Bible and we find a man by the name of David,

  192. David, that great colossal figure in the Old

  193. Testament, they tell us that David had a mind

  194. as brilliant as a kiss of sunlight upon clear

  195. water. David, who was so gifted with words and

  196. eloquence, who could write half of the book of

  197. Psalms, and yet he was such a warrior that they

  198. sang the songs of him. that Saul had killed his

  199. thousands, but David his tens of thousands. But

  200. yet if you wanted to know the true heart, essence

  201. of who David was, he was a shepherd. That when

  202. we first find David, he's on the backside of

  203. his father's property, tending to the sheep.

  204. David would say that the Lord had delivered the

  205. lion and the bear into his hand, and therefore

  206. when he stood in front of David, that bellowing

  207. giant. He was unafraid and undeterred and unmoved.

  208. And he said, you uncircumcised Philistine, you

  209. shall be as one of them. Why was David so confident?

  210. Why was he so assured that David the shepherd

  211. knew ultimately that there was a shepherd that

  212. was over him? Perhaps the most famous chapter

  213. in all of the Bible. Certainly one of the most

  214. famous chapters in the book of Psalms. Pinned

  215. by the hand of David himself. David would say

  216. those wonderful words. The Lord is my shepherd

  217. and I shall not want. If a pastor is to succeed.

  218. If a pastor is to do well. He must understand

  219. and recognize first and foremost. as an under

  220. -shepherd of the great shepherd himself, that

  221. there is one above us and one that goes before

  222. us and one that leads us. Amen? The word pastor

  223. comes from the Latin translated from shepherd.

  224. That's the true meaning of a pastor. It means

  225. a shepherd, one who would take care of the flock

  226. and tend to the sheep. But we live in a day and

  227. age. We live in a time in which pastors want

  228. to be referred to by many different titles. Some

  229. pastors want to be known as leaders. Others view

  230. themselves as CEOs of the ecclesiastical world.

  231. Others view themselves as visionaries or directors

  232. or encouragers or inspirational or merely motivational

  233. speakers. Can I tell you this morning? of God's

  234. pastor, the members of a congregation, the ecclesiastical

  235. body and mystical body of Jesus Christ. We don't

  236. need CEOs. We don't need motivational speakers.

  237. We don't need some little one, two, three inspirational

  238. talk. We need men who will stand behind the pulpit

  239. of God and preach the word. We need shepherds.

  240. who will lead us into the truth and blessing

  241. and promise of Almighty God. And I can't help

  242. but wonder in this day and age with all of our

  243. descriptions and all of our expectations, if

  244. we have not missed the role of a shepherd in

  245. all of the titles that are laid down at the church's

  246. feet, I wonder how many truly like being called

  247. a pastor or a shepherd. We want to have... some

  248. other title ascribed to us because we want to

  249. be higher than we really are. Can I tell you,

  250. a pastor is the lowest office in the church.

  251. We're servants. We are not here to be served

  252. but rather to serve. And if I can tell you something

  253. about this couple right here, again, they're

  254. not here for their own sake. They are here for

  255. the sake of the body of Christ. They are here

  256. to serve you and to minister to you and to lead

  257. you. To make sure that you lie down in pastures

  258. of green and you sit beside still waters. To

  259. make sure that your heads are anointed with oil

  260. and your cup is running over. That even in the

  261. midst of your enemies, the Lord might bless you

  262. and prosper you and keep you. I know this couple

  263. and they love me. love the title of pastor. They

  264. love the title of shepherd. They are servants

  265. to the people and the body of God. Amen? And

  266. so that was the promise of Scripture. The Lord

  267. said, I'll raise up shepherds after my own heart.

  268. That's the role of a pastor. That's the role

  269. of a preacher, to be a shepherd and his congregation,

  270. the flock. Again, I say sheep don't need CEOs.

  271. They don't need directors. They don't need encouragers.

  272. They need shepherds who will preach the truth

  273. of God's Word. That this Word is sharper than

  274. a two -edged sword. The Bible says that it's

  275. able to separate even soul from spirit and bone

  276. from marrow. It's able to separate and to divide

  277. us. That it's able to see and penetrate even

  278. into the deep recesses of our heart. We need

  279. preachers who will stand behind the pulpit and

  280. say that there is a hell to shun and that there

  281. is a heaven to gain. That there is such a thing

  282. called... And there is needed repentance in the

  283. body of Christ. There is a call to holiness.

  284. That without holiness no man shall see the Lord.

  285. That there is a righteous standard for the people

  286. of God. Sometimes the preacher might come after

  287. you with a rod. And sometimes it might be a staff.

  288. He might come to you in love and encouragement

  289. and uplifting. Words may cut to the very core

  290. of who you are, but can I tell you this world

  291. is not our home. We started out with that song

  292. this morning. Do we not still believe that Jesus

  293. is coming? One glorious day in the clouds that

  294. is lightning flashes, even from the east unto

  295. the west, that at the trump of God, the voice

  296. of the archangel, the Lord himself shall descend

  297. with a shout. we which are alive and remain shall

  298. be called up to meet the Lord, that we who are

  299. alive in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,

  300. that this corruption shall put on incorruption,

  301. and this mortal shall put on immortality, that

  302. death shall be swallowed up in victory forever.

  303. Do we not believe that there is a foundation,

  304. a building not made with hands, eternal in the

  305. heavens? Jesus said you believe. Believe in God.

  306. Believe also in me. I go to prepare a place for

  307. you that where I am, there you may be also. Can

  308. I tell you, you won't get to heaven by your good

  309. works. You won't get to heaven by righteous deeds.

  310. You will only get to heaven by the shed blood

  311. of Jesus Christ. By grace are you saved and not

  312. of yourselves. It is a gift of Christ. God, you

  313. need a preacher who will still tell you that

  314. hell is hot and heaven is sweet. Repent for the

  315. kingdom of God is at hand. Thank God for a preacher

  316. who will stand with a backbone and shoulders

  317. squared and declare the infallible, inerrant,

  318. eternal word of God. Amen. Heaven and earth shall

  319. pass away. But the word of the Lord shall endure

  320. forever. To preach his word. To be entrusted

  321. with his word. What a calling that is. That's

  322. what it means to be a pastor. To be called. You

  323. didn't call yourself Cliff. The Lord called you.

  324. You didn't choose to go anywhere. The Lord ordered

  325. and directed your steps. He's here because He

  326. has put His ear to the lips of Almighty God and

  327. said, Here I am, Lord. Send me. Oh, to have preachers

  328. and pastors such as that. Why do we need them?

  329. Because it is the law of average. That I don't

  330. know your stories here this morning, but I could

  331. say unequivocally, And without a doubt that there

  332. are here this morning marriages that are crumbling.

  333. There's some of you here today that have wayward

  334. children. Some of you have or know people who

  335. are being destroyed by addictive substances,

  336. whether it's alcohol or cigarettes or drugs.

  337. Some of you here today are weighed down with

  338. the burdens and cares of life, stress that is

  339. overwhelming. financial woes that are collapsing,

  340. depression that is defeating. Some of you here

  341. today, it was all you could do to get dressed,

  342. to brush your teeth, and to walk out the door,

  343. and to walk in these doors. You're here simply

  344. running on fumes. You've given everything you

  345. know to give. You're hanging on by a thread.

  346. Not much more to give. Ready to collapse and

  347. give up. The signs of the Christian life are

  348. all but void. You feel like anything but a conqueror

  349. and an overcomer. You hear those words of Paul

  350. in Romans chapter 8 that you're more than conquerors.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  351. And yet you feel conquered today. You feel overwhelmed.

  352. We have sheep here today who are in danger of

  353. being lost. And so you need a shepherd who would

  354. come along. A shepherd who cares enough to correct

  355. you. A shepherd who cares enough to feed you.

  356. A shepherd who cares enough to encourage you

  357. and to tell you the truth. Because when we look

  358. out at our world, I see no shepherds in politics.

  359. But I expect that. As I turn on the 5 o 'clock

  360. or the 6 o 'clock or the 10 o 'clock news. There's

  361. no shepherds there. They're just talking heads.

  362. When we go into our schools and we look at our

  363. elementaries and our middle school and high schools

  364. and our schools of higher learning, we don't

  365. see shepherds there either. We see the innocence

  366. of our children, of our young people being taken

  367. every single day. And my wife's a teacher, by

  368. the way. I'm not knocking at teachers, but we

  369. live in a day that they're no longer institutions

  370. of learning, but we see the indoctrination and

  371. we see the turning of their little hearts and

  372. minds. There are no shepherds there, but I expect

  373. that. As we go into the courthouses and we see

  374. the judge, your honor, and we all rise for him.

  375. He's a judge, but he's not a shepherd. In no

  376. other avenue, in no other place, no other institution

  377. or congregation or building are there shepherds

  378. except for in the church. It is in the church

  379. that we are called to have a shepherd and a pastor.

  380. And how sad it is that many have abdicated that

  381. responsibility and that calling. But how blessed

  382. you are that you have a shepherd this morning

  383. who understands that there are people or sheep

  384. who need to be fed. And minister to and clothe

  385. with the good news and the words and the grace

  386. and the mercy and the love and the compassion

  387. and the eternalness of God himself. That inside

  388. of this house and this building there is something

  389. that is deposited in your soul that nothing else

  390. in the world can give to you. Amen. The Bible

  391. says. We, like sheep, have gone astray, and therefore

  392. we need shepherds to bring us back in. We live

  393. in a day and age in which sin is no longer called

  394. sin, and because we no longer have a word to

  395. define it, we no longer have a solution to provide.

  396. We live in a day and age in which sheep no longer

  397. think themselves broken, and because they no

  398. longer see themselves broken, they no longer

  399. think that they need to be fixed. We live in

  400. a day and age that we will allow any prescription,

  401. any feel -good to soothe our ills and to calm

  402. our minds, and yet we will now never allow the

  403. peace and the presence that passes all understanding

  404. to give us comfort. You know, I marvel at those

  405. words of Paul. Paul said, be anxious for nothing

  406. in everything. Give thanks unto the Lord. Rejoice

  407. always. And again, I say rejoice. I look back

  408. over the saints of God. I'm a third generation

  409. church of God preacher. My grandfather was a

  410. preacher. My uncle is a preacher. I've grown

  411. up in the church all of my life. I can remember

  412. those saints of old. I remember those services

  413. of yesterday. I remember my grandfather grew

  414. up in a house with a dirt floor. It was a one

  415. -room shack. He grew up working the coal mines

  416. of Marion County. They didn't have much. They

  417. weren't afforded all of the luxuries and the

  418. affluence of life. They were not wealthy by any

  419. means, not in the terms of this world, but there

  420. was a blessing that they had. There was a richness

  421. of soul that could not be taken away. There was

  422. something deposited down deep on the inside of

  423. them. They understood that there was a God that

  424. watched over and kept to make sure that they

  425. were taken care of. In fact, one of the stories

  426. I remember most in that little church on Orm

  427. Mountain was an old sister by the name of Sister

  428. Maggie Nunley. was getting ready to close its

  429. doors. They didn't have a lot in terms of finances.

  430. And so my grandfather told me the story. She

  431. gave her last dime that would have been a lot

  432. of money back in the late 30s and the early 40s.

  433. She gave a dime into the offering plate. It was

  434. the last dime that she had. And my grandfather

  435. told me the story that when she went home that

  436. afternoon and she was working in the garden,

  437. We often wonder, how is the Lord going to do

  438. it? I heard that as Brian declared that... promise

  439. and that prayer over you as you gave this morning,

  440. that as you give, the Lord would provide resources,

  441. that he'd open up the windows of heaven, that

  442. money would chase you down, that blessings of

  443. God would be upon you. I don't know how it works.

  444. I don't have an explanation for it. There's no

  445. mathematical formula. I guess it's like Malachi

  446. said, he'll open up the windows of heaven and

  447. pour you down a blessing. that you cannot contain.

  448. He's able to do it all. He owns the cattle on

  449. a thousand hills, and He owns the hills thereof.

  450. You need to be told that this world is not our

  451. home, but there is a God that watches over us

  452. and guides us every single day. We live in this

  453. old wilderness. We call earth, that there is

  454. a hope and a promise that it... to come. Amen.

  455. Hallelujah. We live in a day and age in which

  456. there are ravenous wolves. There's wayward goats.

  457. There's lions and bears that would do us harm.

  458. And so we need a shepherd to protect us. The

  459. Bible tells us in the last days there would be

  460. such a growth of evil and hostility to the true

  461. faith. that eventually would permeate even into

  462. the church, that there would be a departing from

  463. the faith, a turning unto man -made philosophies,

  464. and that if it were even possible that it might

  465. deceive the elect, that sheep themselves would

  466. turn away. That's why you need a shepherd. And

  467. the only kind of answer to this problem is that

  468. your shepherd, of which you have a good one,

  469. That he might understand and know which he does.

  470. That there is another shepherd that he is pointing

  471. unto. What was it that Paul said to the church

  472. at Thessalonica? What was it that he declared

  473. to them? He said, you are my hope and my joy,

  474. my promise before the Lord. He said, he that

  475. hath the bride is the bridegroom, John declared.

  476. John the Baptist said, I'm not him. I just came

  477. to point to him. I just came to show you who

  478. he is. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom,

  479. but the friend of the bridegroom standeth and

  480. waiteth and rejoiceth greatly at the sound of

  481. his voice. I'm thankful that you have a pastor

  482. this morning that puts his ear to heaven and

  483. says, Lord, where are you leading us today? song

  484. a moment ago. He understands that that cloud

  485. that covers by day, it leads him. And that fire

  486. that burns at night, it's a guiding light. He

  487. understands that the words that he declares and

  488. speaks are not his own. That there is an anointing

  489. of God that blesses and touches and gives life

  490. to his words. Amen. I don't know what it is about

  491. being a preacher, but I've had enough conversations

  492. with him, and I've had them myself, that on the

  493. Sundays you feel like you've preached the worst

  494. sermon in your life, you'll have people come

  495. up and say, Pastor, that was the greatest thing

  496. that I've ever heard. You're trying to drag yourself

  497. out of here and say, Lord, if you could just

  498. turn back the clock and the hand of time and

  499. let me redo that. I stumbled all over myself.

  500. It didn't make sense to me. I don't know how

  501. it made sense to them. And yet they'll come up

  502. to you and say, that was the greatest message.

  503. That blessed me. I got more out of that than

  504. I've gotten in the last six months. And we're

  505. scratching our head trying to figure it out.

  506. But yet on those Sundays where we feel like we

  507. hit all. points that we had and we quoted every

  508. facet of scripture and we're dripping sweat and

  509. we feel like we've left a lung on the altar.

  510. Nobody will say anything. Can I tell you there's

  511. a reason that happens? It's the foolishness of

  512. preaching. It's not in the efforts of man. It's

  513. in the efforts of God. There is an anointing

  514. on the preacher. There is an anointing on the

  515. pulpit. There is an anointing. on the pastor,

  516. that he takes dead words from a dead man, but

  517. he touches the lips and gives life and ability

  518. to penetrate into the darkest soul and darkest

  519. heart and cause life to spring out of it. There

  520. is a great mystery, and that mystery is God himself.

  521. Amen. Paul said, without controversy, great is

  522. the mystery of godliness. Apart from him, your

  523. pastor can do nothing. Apart from him, the church

  524. can do nothing. We recognize that he is the chief

  525. shepherd. He's the bishop of our souls. He's

  526. the captain of our salvation. Of all of the accolades,

  527. I don't know how much time I've got left. 1152.

  528. If I was at home, I'd have eight minutes left

  529. this morning. I know your preacher's a little

  530. longer winded than I am. He's probably just getting

  531. wound up right now. I always get on to him. Let

  532. your people go. Be like Moses. Stand before him.

  533. I'm going to let you go today. I know you're

  534. trying to beat the Baptist. Well, actually, you've

  535. got food back here. But most Sundays you're trying

  536. to beat the Baptist down the road or the Presbyterians

  537. or somewhere. And he just keeps trying to force

  538. things. you and give you more and more and more.

  539. You're saying, Pastor, land the plane already.

  540. We get the point. We know what you're trying

  541. to say. He goes past that 45 minute mark and

  542. it's knocking on an hour every Sunday. I'm trying

  543. to get done in about 25 or 30 minutes. I'm not

  544. your pastor this morning, but I'm speaking to

  545. his heart. Cliff, let him go a little earlier

  546. every Sunday. My grandfather used to say, go

  547. ahead, yeah. this morning. My grandfather used

  548. to say, he said, I'd rather them say, man, I

  549. wish he'd given us a little bit more than to

  550. hear them say, I wish he'd shut up already. I

  551. don't know what y 'all say to him this morning,

  552. but he goes about 10 or 15 minutes just telling

  553. me what he preached to you on Sunday. And that's

  554. just the cliff notes. He does. I'm trying to

  555. be good. Oh, you need a pastor. And you have

  556. a pastor that points to the true shepherd. He

  557. understands that Jesus is the one. They're not

  558. here for their own fame. They're here for the

  559. fame of Jesus. That your life, that you might

  560. be a living epistle read about by men. That everywhere

  561. you go, he might be proud for you to say, I'm

  562. a member of the Hopewell Church of God. I don't

  563. know if y 'all have tags on your cars or bumper

  564. stickers. I won't let my people have them, but

  565. maybe you have them this morning. I hope that

  566. he would be proud of you everywhere that you

  567. went, that he would say, those are my people,

  568. those are my members, that you would carry yourself

  569. because you have a shepherd who has carried you

  570. to the feet of Jesus and laid you at the cross

  571. of Christ, that he understands that he's not

  572. smart enough, he's not strong enough. He's not

  573. good enough, but glory to God, there's one who

  574. is. That by his stripes we are healed. He's able

  575. to do all things. He's the same yesterday, today,

  576. and forevermore. Amen. Would you stand with me

  577. this morning? I'm not going to read all of this,

  578. but I want to close with these remarks. For some

  579. of you, this is not new material. That back in

  580. the 40s and the 50s, there was a man by the name

  581. of Oral Roberts, and you might have your opinions

  582. of him. But he preached a sermon, and the end

  583. of the sermon, he talked about the fourth man.

  584. You sang about it a moment ago. And when he got

  585. to the fourth man in the fiery furnace, he would

  586. ask that question, who is that fourth man? If

  587. I could change that question just a little bit,

  588. and I won't go through all of it, I would like

  589. to ask the question, who ultimately is your shepherd?

  590. If we were to open up in the book of Genesis,

  591. we would find that he is the seed of the woman.

  592. If we go into Exodus, he's the Passover lamb.

  593. If we go into Leviticus, he's the high priest.

  594. In Numbers, he's the pillar of cloud by day and

  595. the pillar of fire by night. In Deuteronomy,

  596. he's the prophet like unto Moses. In Joshua,

  597. he's the captain of our salvation. In Judges,

  598. he's the judge and lawgiver. In Ruth, he's our

  599. kinsman redeemer. If I could go a little bit

  600. further into the book of Psalms, he's that tower

  601. and refuge. He's the one in whose shadow we hide.

  602. In Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, he's our wisdom.

  603. In Song of Solomon, he's the lover of our soul,

  604. our bridegroom. In Isaiah, he's the prince of

  605. peace, the wonderful counselor, the mighty God.

  606. Everlasting Father. In Jeremiah, he's the righteous

  607. branch. In limitations, he's the weeping prophet.

  608. In Ezekiel, he's the wonderful four -faced man.

  609. And in Daniel, he's the fourth man in life's

  610. fiery furnaces who ultimately is your shepherd.

  611. In Hosea, he's the faithful husband. In Joel,

  612. he's the baptizer with Holy Ghost and fire. In

  613. Amos, he's our burden bearer. In Obadiah, he's

  614. mighty to save. If I could go over into the New

  615. Testament and we were to open up into the book

  616. of Matthew, we would find that he is the Messiah,

  617. the one who was to come. In Mark, he's the wonder

  618. worker. In Luke, he is the son of man. In John,

  619. he's the word that became flesh and dwelt among

  620. us. In Acts, he is the spirit baptizer. In Romans,

  621. he is the justifier. In 1 and 2 Corinthians,

  622. he's our sanctifier. In Galatians, he's the redeemer

  623. and the curse from the law. In Ephesians, he

  624. is the Christ of unsearchable riches. In Philippians,

  625. he is the God who supplies all of our needs.

  626. In Colossians, he is the fullness of the Godhead

  627. dwelling bodily. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians, he

  628. is our soon coming king. In 1 and 2 Timothy,

  629. he is the mediator between Between God and men,

  630. the man Christ Jesus. In Titus, he's our faithful

  631. pastor. In Philemon, he's the friend that sticks

  632. closer than a brother. In Hebrews, he is the

  633. better blood of the everlasting covenant. In

  634. James, he's the great physician and the prayer

  635. that heals and saves the sick. In 1 and 2 Peter,

  636. he's the chief shepherd who shall appear with

  637. the crown of... unfading glory. In 1 and 2 and

  638. 3 John, he is love himself made manifest and

  639. bodily before us. In Jude, he is the Lord coming

  640. with 10 ,000 of his saints. And in Revelation,

  641. he is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

  642. Amen. Who is your shepherd? He's Abel's sacrifice.

  643. He's Noah's rainbow. He's Abraham's ram. He's

  644. Isaac's well. He's Jacob's scepter. Moses' rod.

  645. Joshua's sun and moon that stood still. He's

  646. Elijah's mantle. Elisha's staff. Gideon's fleece.

  647. Samuel's horn of oil. David's slingshot. Isaiah's

  648. anointment. Hezekiah's sundial. Daniel's visions.

  649. Amos' birth. Malachi's son of righteousness who

  650. is your shepherd. He's Peter's shadow. Stephen's

  651. signs and wonders. He's Paul's handkerchiefs

  652. and aprons. And he's John's pearly white city

  653. who ultimately is your shepherd. He's a father

  654. to the orphan, a husband to the widow, to the

  655. traveler in the night. He's the bright and morning

  656. star to those who walk in the lonesome. He's

  657. the lily that is found. He's the rose of Sharon,

  658. the honey in the rock. He's the brightness of

  659. God's glory, the express image of his person.

  660. He's the king of glory, the pearl of great price,

  661. the rock in a weary land, the cup that runs over,

  662. the rod and staff that comfort, and the government

  663. rests upon his shoulders, and there shall be

  664. no more. Who is your shepherd ultimately? He

  665. is Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of the living God,

  666. conceived of the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin

  667. Mary. He is God of God and light of light and

  668. very God of very God. He is begotten and not

  669. made. He is the Word that became flesh and without

  670. Him nothing was made which has been made. He

  671. has all of the preeminence and honor and glory.

  672. There is no other name given under heaven but

  673. the name of Jesus whereby we might be saved.

  674. Who is your shepherd? He is faithful and true.

  675. He is the promise that holds. He's that sure

  676. and solid foundation. I'm thankful, church, that

  677. you have a pastor that points to the true shepherd.

  678. the chief shepherd, the bishop of your souls.

  679. He understands that there is one who can do anything

  680. but fail, the one who can minister and touch

  681. and heal the people of God. Jesus is my shepherd.

  682. He's your shepherd, and he's your pastor's shepherd.

  683. We're the sheep of his pasture, and how blessed

  684. you are that you have a pastoral couple. That

  685. points to him every single week. He's not up

  686. here for the name of Clifford Waters. He just

  687. assumed to hide behind this pulpit and set forth

  688. the glorious person of Jesus. That's what makes

  689. them a good pastoral couple. They are servants.

  690. What did the Bible say? What were the words of

  691. Jesus? When we get to heaven and he shall say

  692. to us, not well done. Good and faithful whatever

  693. title. Good and faithful servant. A servant of

  694. the Lord. A minister to God's people. A shepherd

  695. to the flock. Cliff, Kathy, I don't want to embarrass

  696. you this morning, but here's what I'd like to

  697. do. I'd like for you guys to come and stand and

  698. face this congregation. Seven years that they

  699. have been here. If you're one of those numbers

  700. people. That's the number of perfection. Number

  701. of completion. Seven wonderful, great years.

  702. And look around at all that the Lord has done.

  703. All that He's blessed you. And can I tell you

  704. His heart? The secrets of His heart? He's not

  705. done. Not even close to done. The conversations

  706. I still have, there's still more to do. There's

  707. still more work. There's still more people to

  708. reach. There's still wayward children. There's

  709. still lost sons and daughters. There's still

  710. sheep that need to come in and be fed. There

  711. are still the naked that need to be clothed and

  712. the hungry that need to be fed and the thirsty

  713. that need drink. Their passion has not waned

  714. one bit in seven years. And so here's what I'd

  715. like to do as an altar call. I'd like for all

  716. of the leadership of this church, whatever it

  717. looks like, to come and stand closest to them.

  718. And then all that would to gather on the outside

  719. of them. Every retired minister, I know you've

  720. got a bunch here this morning. Every retired

  721. minister that would to come and gather around

  722. this couple. And all of this congregation and

  723. all of this body to gather around and help us

  724. lay hands upon them. and pray for a greater anointing,

  725. greater vision, greater passion, and greater

  726. ministry than they've ever known. I believe that

  727. the best is yet to come for this church as the

  728. Lord leads this couple. If you love them and

  729. you believe in them this morning, would you come?

  730. If you're not able to come, stretch your hand

  731. this way and help us pray.
