  1. In the name of the glorious trinity, Father and

  2. Son and Holy Spirit, forever amen. Glory

  3. be to the everlasting mercies which sent you to

  4. us, O Christ, the light of the world and the life of

  5. all. Give us wisdom by your law and

  6. enlighten our impulses by your knowledge. Sanctify

  7. our souls by your truth and grant that we may be

  8. obedient to your words and may fulfill your

  9. commandments at every hour. O

  10. you who enlightens the rational with the knowledge

  11. of your greatness. Do enlighten, O my Lord, our

  12. thoughts, that we may meditate upon your holy and

  13. divine scriptures at all times, O Lord of all.

  14. Father and Son and Holy Spirit,

  15. forever. Amen. In the Gospel of our Lord

  16. Jesus Christ, according to the preaching or the

  17. proclamation of Saint Matthew chapter 10 verse

    Matthew 10:16

  18. 16, Jesus instructs his disciples that they were to

  19. be wise as serpents and pure as doves, but we'll

  20. leave that for another episode. And

  21. possibly making this a standard by which God

  22. measures wisdom, their wisdom, our wisdom and the

  23. wisdom of the world. Why? What qualities, what

  24. characteristics has God, the serpents creator prepared it

  25. with and instructs us to possess those same qualities

  26. and characteristics by which we can better our

  27. relationship with Him and others as far as wisdom is

  28. concerned. Now we're going to be examining

  29. the commentary and the writings of Marishudad, mid

  30. eighth, eighth century bishop of Haditha, that is

  31. a Palestine Arab village. His

  32. writings and he writes of four qualities as also

  33. stated by the blessed Theophilact, the Byzantine

  34. Archbishop, commentator, 1055 AD. These

  35. are the church fathers that we always refer to. So

  36. he writes that a serpent or a snake possesses four

  37. qualities or characteristics. The

  38. first one is intriguing and I examine this, I Google

  39. these and these according to what Google, Mr. or

  40. Mrs. Google has provided are true that

  41. are verified. When the skin of a serpent

  42. oppresses it, so when the skin of a snake or a

  43. serpent oppresses it, the skin of the serpent gets

  44. old and its eyes are blinded, you'll be amazed

  45. what he does, he doesn't eat. It

  46. actually says for 40 days, Marishudad states that for

  47. 40 days it fasts, it abstains from food until

  48. the body is relaxed and then what it does, it

  49. seeks a cleft, a gap or a fissure, a slit. You've

  50. seen it on documentaries and what is it, National

  51. Geographic, it starts seeking a gap between two

  52. rocks or thistles or branches and it seeks that

  53. gap to be straight and narrow and it begins to

  54. slide in, penetrating its body onto the cleft and it

  55. casts off that old skin of its and it's made young

  56. and acquires strength and health and then you see

  57. the shedded skin of the serpent. But

  58. what is Christ signifying here and what is he trying

  59. to teach us by this simply put is that we too should

  60. enter the narrow gate according to Matthew chapter

    Matthew 7:13

  61. 7 verse 13. Now this is going to give it

  62. another perspective of Matthew chapter 7 verse 13.

    Matthew 7:13

  63. We should strive, we should

  64. force, we should challenge ourselves to go through the

  65. narrow gate, the cleft and the fissure and that narrow

  66. gate being no other than the gate of trials and

  67. temptations and challenges in life be it personal,

  68. Christian, marriage, work, relationship, finances, not

  69. limiting to any trials and temptations that we go

  70. through. So this is the reason then

  71. why St. James writes in his letter

  72. chapter 12 verse 12, Blessed is the man who

  73. endures trials for when he has been tested he will

  74. receive a crown of life which God has promised to

  75. those who love him. So these are the gates, this

  76. is the cleft, this is the fissure beloved, that oh

  77. this is the narrow gate that we need to strive to

  78. go through and that gate being the temptations and

  79. the trials and the challenges of life. You

  80. see God tests, not tempts but God tests us. Now

  81. he may allow us to go through temptations and that

  82. to reveal and expose our evil desires according to

  83. verse 13 of St. James chapter 12. Let

  84. no one when he is tempted say I am tempted by God

  85. for God is not tempted with evils nor does he

  86. tempt any man but he allows us to go through

  87. those temptations. It's allowing us to go through

  88. the narrow gate so that we can shed off that old man.

  89. Now learning from the serpent

  90. while trying to cast off the old man within us that

  91. same aged, that same man that is aged in sin and

  92. trying to strive to put on the new man renewed in the

  93. knowledge and likeness of our Creator according to

  94. Colossians chapter 3 verse 10 it is the same as the

    Colossians 3:10

  95. serpent and we must do that and we too sometimes

  96. become very heavy, laden and burdened with the old

  97. man that we carry because of temptations, trials, peer

  98. pressure what have you. Now when we do want to enter

  99. that narrow gate, now this is not to be taken lightly

  100. because we're now wanting to go up against Satan.

  101. I'm going to talk about that.

  102. So when we do want to enter

  103. that narrow gate which is trials and temptations and

  104. we want to gladfully and joyfully and praisefully

  105. receive God's allowance, God permitting us to go through

  106. those temptations we also must do what the serpent

  107. does is fast. And now it was what six weeks

  108. ago that we ended our fast the great Lent. So

  109. fast is not just because we need to do it Jesus

  110. did it and the church is proclaiming it no no that

  111. is the the process of shedding off the old man

  112. which is being corrupted and aged in sin. So

  113. we need to also abstain from food which is fast

  114. because as I said we are attempting, we are preparing

  115. to enter our wilderness, we are preparing to enter a

  116. battle with Satan to take on Satan and his demons

  117. and also our evil desires which are from Satan. We

  118. are going up against the enemy which is Satan and

  119. Christ warns us that this type of challenge, this

  120. type of competition you want to call it trial,

  121. this type of warfare can only be done and receive

  122. victory and be victorious through prayer and fasting.

  123. You know when his disciples

  124. couldn't heal the demon possessed man and Jesus

  125. rebukes the father because he didn't believe, oh

  126. perverse generation how long am I going to be with you

  127. in Matthew chapter 9? Then it is disciples who try to

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  128. enter that narrow gate by trying to heal the son's

  129. demon and the father who brought his son to be

  130. entered into the narrow gate by the apostles but

  131. he didn't believe he was lacking in faith. Jesus

  132. says and when they ask him why we couldn't do it why

  133. did it not happen he said because of the unbelief but

  134. this type Jesus said when you want to go against

  135. Satan and his demons you need to do it through

  136. prayer and fasting. Some of the versions of the

  137. Bibles that are out there have done away with fasting

  138. because they don't believe in fasting. Jesus

  139. fasted we fast right? Yes Jesus said they don't need

  140. to fast now because they said why aren't your

  141. disciples fasting? He said why do they need to

  142. fast? The bridegroom is still with

  143. them I'm with them but when the bridegroom is

  144. taken away they will fast and Jesus says in Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  145. chapter 6 when you fast that means you fast so

  146. don't do or woe to those. Woe

  147. to the writer to the author who's taken away

  148. from the word of God. We are another quality that

  149. Marishu Dad writes and according to his writing is

  150. that when a serpent goes to drink water or water,

  151. Nia, Mai, Aqua, is that right Stephen? Aqua

  152. yes when a serpent goes to drink water it actually

  153. hides its fangs in the fang hole in the mouth.

  154. Now you go and google that as

  155. well you'll find that that is true. Now

  156. this is when did I say let me let me let me go

  157. back again and and Marishu Dad this is um eighth

  158. century right in year 800 so 1200 years from now

  159. Marishu Dad writes about how a serpent drinks water

  160. scientifically he's correct and we find out that that

  161. is true of course it would be true so it hides its

  162. fangs in the fang so he doesn't produce the fangs

  163. so too writes Marishu Dad those who believe in his

  164. name when they are about to drink the water of

  165. everlasting life which is the provisions of the grace

  166. of the Holy Spirit when we want to have a relationship

  167. with God when we want to please God when we want to

  168. serve God in order to be replenished by the

  169. everlasting water of grace which is Jesus Christ

  170. himself please praise me to you Nia his name should

  171. enter their fangs should I'm sorry should not enter

  172. with their fangs that is to say fleshly lusts and

  173. pollutions we cannot serve God beloved and be

  174. corrupted we cannot have one leg in the world and

  175. one leg in the church it it just doesn't work now

  176. society and unfortunately some preachers some pastors

  177. some churches may be preaching this but that is

  178. blasphemy and there is heresy you cannot serve two

  179. masters Jesus said we cannot come to God with

  180. our evil desire and can't we I'm sorry we come to

  181. God without even the evil desires and when do we

  182. come to God with our evil desires is at the moment

  183. when we want to repent from our evil desires not

  184. to have a relationship with God and beg God to accept

  185. me as I am I'm going to continue in this evil no

  186. we need to put those fangs away put those evil lusts

  187. and corruption and pollution away you cannot claim and

  188. have a relationship with Jesus Christ just by

  189. reading the scriptures and saying that I read the

  190. scriptures I have a relationship with God but

  191. you neglect those same scriptures are saying that

  192. do not neglect your holy assemblies coming to church

  193. being a part of church no you cannot claim to be a

  194. Christian and not do what Christ did on earth and he

  195. didn't need to do that he did it as an example for

  196. you and I fasting praying you cannot claim that you

  197. have a relationship with God through only the

  198. scriptures but you don't have that intimate

  199. relationship that can communion with God through

  200. the holy scripture holy Eucharist we love it so we

  201. have to come to God we come in our filthy state

  202. but we come ready to fold those fangs we come with

  203. to God to get rid of the pollution we cannot have a

  204. relationship with God and we remain in lust beloved

  205. St Paul writes in Ephesians chapter 4 verse 22 you

    Ephesians 4:22

  206. shall lay aside your former practices the old man that

  207. is corrupted with the lusts of error beloved our first

  208. cannot be watered or refreshed by the gracious

  209. provisions of Christ if we who claim to believe in

  210. his most holy precious majestic and dominant name

  211. yet continue to carry our most dreadful corrupted and

  212. lustful old self the third quality saint Marysh Udad

  213. writes is that when a serpent this is very

  214. interesting when a serpent sees a man who is naked

  215. unarmed just person just walking by for example it

  216. is afraid and flees from him but if he sees the

  217. man clothed and dressed adventures that means he

  218. becomes brave and daring and springs up upon him

  219. what that is telling us beloved is that we ought

  220. to put off the garments of culpable blamful shameful

  221. passions desires and doubt that the devil our enemy

  222. who hates us may not spring upon us you see the

  223. enemy satan satan when he wants to attack tries to

  224. find that target and satan is proud this is this is

  225. the vocation of satan satan doesn't go around seeing

  226. who is homeless and wants to help the person satan

  227. and his enemies don't go around and seeing who is

  228. brokenhearted and discouraged and sits by their side and

  229. taps him on their back and says it's okay everything

  230. will be all right no actually satan goes and

  231. sits with these people and says why don't you end

  232. your life that's the best thing for you to do right

  233. now take your life it's constantly prowling saint

  234. simon saint peter the rock in his first epistle

  235. chapter five verse eight writes this be sober and

  236. be guarded because satan your adversary like a lion

  237. roars and goes about and seeks whom he may devour

  238. devour saint paul writes in aphesians chapter six verse

  239. 16 take up the shield that is the confidence of faith

  240. by which you will have power to crunch all the

  241. fiery darts or arrows of the evil one so satan is

  242. prowling wanting to to work out your weaknesses your

  243. foolishness your doubt and he will start and your

  244. evil desires our passions our lusts that's where he

  245. starts shooting his flaming arrows always keep in mind

  246. beloved that passions desires lusts weaknesses and

  247. doubt are the bullseye the hundred mark of the target

  248. at which satan our adversary our enemy our

  249. opponent aims and releases all his flaming arrows of

  250. temptations and enticements and you know what the

  251. target is the target itself is our minds and our

  252. hearts so let us not carry these doubts and evil

  253. desires so that there is no place no reason no

  254. opportunity for satan to pounce on us as does the

  255. serpent and lastly the serpent marishudad writes

  256. the serpent delivers all its body and to blows and

  257. strokes but covers only its head that it may not be

  258. beaten on the head being the sustainer of life in

  259. the body the lord is teaching us beloved that we

  260. also must bear all now bear not justify not

  261. provoke not pray them upon ourselves but bear all

  262. torments and ills which troubles and problems and

  263. persecutions and sufferings as we spoke last episode

  264. until death but we need to keep spotless the fear of

  265. god which is the head of the life of earthly beings

  266. writes marishudad so just as a reptile whose head is

  267. crushed is not saved it dies portrayed beautifully

  268. by mel Gibson our christian brother you know why mel's

  269. being mel was attacked after the passion of the

  270. christ you know why you know why hollywood came

  271. after mel because that film was a life -changing film

  272. changed many people's lives you know and hollywood

  273. doesn't want that hollywood wants filth filth filth

  274. that's what hollywood likes but we need to support our

  275. brother mel Gibson who is a christian brother who is

  276. now a god -loving god -fearing lord -loving

  277. christian portrayed it beautifully in the garden

  278. of gethsemane for those who've seen the film i'm

  279. sure everyone's seen the film the passion of the

  280. christ when he stands up after his agonizing prayer

  281. in the garden of gethsemane he crushes the head of the

  282. serpent so just as the head of the serpent if

  283. crushed is not saved neither is a christian who

  284. corrupts his right he's true his catholic with a

  285. small c he's true meaning the orthodox faith that

  286. faith that was passed down to faithful men according

  287. to 2 timothy chapter 2 verse 2 by the apostles

    2 Timothy 2:2

  288. that faith which is the chief of all good things

  289. so if you're asking what is true faith that i must

  290. protect and i must nurture and i must stand firm in

  291. and i must guard regardless if my body is being

  292. pounded with persecution and even death but i must

  293. protect the head which is the faith in our lord god

  294. and his son our lord jesus christ what is that faith

  295. well i want to invite invite you to join me in

  296. proclaiming i say your name when i say i you say your

  297. name i by the way hang on we need to stop washing

  298. dishes stop vacuuming pull over to one side we're

  299. going to now experience the true faith passed down by

  300. the apostles to faithful men so it's still being

  301. passed down it didn't end at the apostles as some

  302. preach so when i say i you repeat your name i

  303. believe in one god the father almighty maker of

  304. all things visible and invisible and in one lord

  305. jesus christ the only son of god the first one of

  306. all creations who was begotten of his father

  307. before all worlds are not made true god of true god

  308. of one essence with his father by whose hands the

  309. worlds were established and all things were created who

  310. for us men and for our salvation came down from

  311. heaven and was incarnate of the holy spirit and became

  312. men and was conceived and born of the virgin mary

  313. and suffered and was crucified in the days of

  314. puncher's pilot and was buried and rose on the

  315. third day as it is written and ascended into heaven

  316. and sat at the right hand of his father and shall

  317. come again to judge the dead and the living and i

  318. believe in one holy spirit the spirit of truth who

  319. proceeds from the father the life -giving spirit and

  320. in one holy and a apostolic and catholic

  321. universal church and i confess one baptism for the

  322. forgiveness of sins and in the resurrection of our

  323. bodies and in the life forever and ever amen
