  1. Good morning, family. Open up to Matthew 21,

  2. Revelation 19. You're going to see some things

  3. that you probably never saw or heard today. It's

  4. not like it's never been taught. But that being

  5. said, before we dig in, we're going to do the...

  6. The doctrinal focus today. So doctrinal focus,

  7. I will read the question, you will read the answer.

  8. Westminster Shorter Catechism, question number

  9. 28. Wherein consists Christ's exaltation? Christ's

  10. exaltation consists in his rising from the dead

  11. on the third day and his ascending into heaven.

  12. and in sitting at the right hand of God the Father,

  13. and in coming to judge the world at the last

  14. day. So this doctrine is fitting for today, because

  15. I think a lot of times when we go through Scripture,

  16. we have a tendency to look at things in a way

  17. that, I don't know if it's the idea of simplification,

  18. but there is some very important truths in these

  19. two verses. And I think sometimes it's missed

  20. that there is more than one triumphal entry.

  21. You're like, no way, that's impossible. We're

  22. going to prove it biblically. And I think you'll

  23. be able to look at the days coming to Jesus'

  24. crucifixion and be able to see this in the scripture.

  25. And really, the two things we're going to focus

  26. on today is the donkey and the horse, the donkey

  27. and her colt. and the horse. So before we get

  28. started, we're going to pray, and then we're

  29. going to dig in. I hope you guys got notebooks,

  30. and I hope you enjoyed today's message. Father,

  31. I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness

  32. and goodness. Thank you that you are righteous

  33. good, that all things are done for your purpose

  34. and glory, that everything throughout the scripture

  35. speaks of you in ways that our minds can't even

  36. fathom, that we will know fully even as we are

  37. fully known one day when we see you face to face.

  38. Lord, we praise you and thank you that you are

  39. holy, righteous, and good, and that your people

  40. are yours. May we see the majesty of the humble

  41. king and the glory of the just king, the coming

  42. king. Lord, we praise you and thank you for your

  43. faithfulness. In Jesus' name, amen. Matthew 21.

  44. It says, Now when they drew near to Jerusalem

  45. and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives,

  46. then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,

  47. Go into the village in front of you, and immediately

  48. you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her.

  49. Untie them, bring them to me. If anyone says

  50. anything to you, you shall say, The Lord needs

  51. them. and he will send them at once. This took

  52. place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet,

  53. saying, Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold,

  54. your king is coming to you, humble and mounted

  55. on a donkey, a colt, the fowl of a beast of burden.

  56. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed

  57. them. They brought the donkey and the colt and

  58. put on them their cloaks. and he sat on them.

  59. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the

  60. road, and others cut branches from the trees

  61. and spread them on the road. And the crowds that

  62. went before him and that followed him were shouting,

  63. Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed be he who

  64. comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the

  65. highest. And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole

  66. city was stirred up, saying, who is this? And

  67. the crowd said, this is the prophet Jesus from

  68. Nazareth of Galilee. Some things I want you to

  69. take notice. Matthew Henry writes concerning

  70. this, the provision that was made for this dignified

  71. rite or royal ceremony was very poor and ordinary,

  72. and such as bespoke his kingdom to be not of

  73. this world. There were no heralds at arms provided,

  74. no trumpet sounded before him, no chariots of

  75. state, no royal guards in procession attire.

  76. Such things as these were not agreeable to his

  77. present state of humiliation, but will be far

  78. outdone at his second coming to which his magnificent

  79. appearance. is reserved. When the last trumpet

  80. shall sound, the glorious angels shall be his

  81. heralds and attendants, and the clouds his chariots.

  82. But in this public appearance, you can only imagine

  83. what that day will be. Can you think about that?

  84. That there was nothing concerning his coming

  85. in as king would even have spoken that the king

  86. had arrived. Why a donkey in a cult? Many of

  87. you guys have probably, I know we talked about

  88. this last year, that the reality of Christ riding

  89. on a donkey was part of the story. It's actually

  90. a donkey and a colt. He rode on both. Matthew

  91. is very clear here. And so is Zachariah. Why

  92. a donkey and her colt, her fowl, her male son?

  93. To fulfill what was written in Zachariah. Chapter

  94. 9, verse 9. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.

  95. Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold,

  96. your king is coming to you, righteous and having

  97. salvation, as he, humble and mounted on a donkey,

  98. on a colt, the fowl of a donkey, to show that

  99. he alone is king, who has come to judge sin,

  100. like the judges of Israel in Judges 5 .10. So

  101. I want you to understand this. Before there was

  102. a king, they would have judges. The judges were

  103. the ones that ruled the people of Israel for

  104. God. They were the ones who God has set in place

  105. because God was the king. Well, there came a

  106. time when they no longer wanted judges. They

  107. demanded a king, and Samuel was the last of the

  108. judges. And so we see in Judges chapter 5 verse

    Judges 5:10

  109. 10 what the judge would ride on. It says, Tell

  110. of it, you who ride on white donkeys, who sit

  111. on rich carpets, you who walk by the way, talking

  112. about the judge. The judge would ride a white

  113. donkey because horses were few and in between

  114. in those days. A donkey is how the leader would

  115. ride in. And in most cases, especially before

  116. the times of kings, when a judge would ride in

  117. too, a tribe, or into the nation, they knew that

  118. God was sending some really bad news. We also

  119. know that the sons of judges rode donkeys. And

  120. like the sons of the judges in Judges 12, 13

  121. through 14, after him, Abdon, the son of Hillel,

  122. the Perithnight, judged Israel. He had 40 sons

  123. and 30 grandsons who rode on 70 colts, and he

  124. judged Israel eight years. Can you see that?

  125. That the sons of the judge rode on a fowl, a

  126. colt. The king of Israel, the son of God, comes

  127. riding on a donkey, humble king. And on her colt,

  128. the beast of burden, not as conqueror, but as

  129. a humble king to judge sin and give his life

  130. as a ransom for many. Now do you see the importance

  131. of the donkey and her colt? It's not by an accident.

  132. It's not just the importance of fulfilling scripture,

  133. which God does always in his prophecies, but

  134. it's also to tell a story that the humble king

  135. who has come to judge sin will die. He will carry

  136. the burden of his people. The king and his donkey,

  137. the first coming, the humble king. Christ came

  138. his first time. Many would say that his first

  139. coming was at his birth, and that is true. But

  140. when he enters Jerusalem as king, his first coming,

  141. we know what happened then. Matthew 21, 4 -7

  142. says this, This took place to fulfill what was

  143. spoken by the prophet, saying, Say to the daughter

  144. of Zion, Behold, see! Look, your king is coming

  145. to you. I like what Zechariah, what it says in

  146. Zechariah is that he comes humble and bringing

  147. salvation. If they only remembered. Humble and

  148. mounted on a donkey, on a colt, a young donkey,

  149. the fowl. The fowl of a donkey is a male donkey,

  150. the son of the mother donkey, if you could say

  151. that. What was a fowl? The fowl was a beast of

  152. burden. The fowl was young enough and strong

  153. enough to carry all the junk that the old donkeys

  154. couldn't carry. The burden. The disciples went

  155. and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought

  156. the donkey and the colt and put on them their

  157. cloaks and he sat on them. The king, to carry

  158. the burden of his people, sits humbly on the

  159. donkeys. Why should you or how should you respond?

  160. to the humble king. I would say, don't respond

  161. like the people of Israel because they got it

  162. wrong. How should you respond? The people's response

  163. to the humble king, Matthew 21, 8 through 11

  164. says, most of the crowds spread their cloaks

  165. on the road and others cut branches from the

  166. trees and spread them on the road. This was his.

  167. red carpet moment. And then it says, and the

  168. crowd that went before him, that followed him,

  169. were shouting, Hosanna, Yashana in the Hebrew.

  170. Yashana, Hosanna means save us, we pray. Isn't

  171. that amazing that he did come to save them, but

  172. they never saw the king. To the son of David,

  173. blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,

  174. Yashana in the highest. And when he entered Jerusalem,

  175. the whole city was stirred up saying, who is

  176. this? Who's this guy? It's the same response

  177. they gave when they were in the desert begging

  178. God for bread. They wake up in the morning and

  179. there's man all over the ground. And they go,

  180. what is that? Who's this guy? Interesting, isn't

  181. it? Notice what it says. And the crowd said,

  182. this is the prophet. Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.

  183. After all, does anything good come from Nazareth?

  184. Of course not. They had just paid attention to

  185. Zechariah's prophecy that the king would ride

  186. on a donkey and he is coming to bring salvation.

  187. They would have said, praise be the king, but

  188. that's not the king they wanted. The king they

  189. wanted was a king who would destroy Rome. See,

  190. if Jesus came in, guns a blazing, taken thrones.

  191. Oh, he's our king now. But the reality is the

  192. victory he won was the victory over sin. They

  193. didn't want forgiveness of sin. They didn't want

  194. a king to destroy the great Goliath of every

  195. human life. So when you watch and you look at

  196. a movie of David and Goliath, no, it's not Goliath

  197. meaning your depression and all the things you

  198. go through. It is sin. Goliath was undefeated.

  199. No one could beat him except a king and a rock.

  200. No one can defeat sin except the king who is

  201. the rock. All Jerusalem missed the king. Oh,

  202. it's the prophet. You see, he came not as a conquering

  203. king, but as a king who gave his life for his

  204. people, not in war. but to set the captives free,

  205. not in wrath, but to bring peace, not with an

  206. army, but alone and abandoned by his friends.

  207. But that's not the end. Revelation 19 verse 11

    Revelation 19:11–16

  208. through 16 tells of another triumphal entry,

  209. a second coming that we must pay attention to.

  210. Except this time it's not a donkey, it's a horse.

  211. And look what it says. Then I saw heaven open

  212. and behold a white horse and one sitting on it

  213. is called faithful and true and in righteousness

  214. he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a

  215. flame of fire and on his head are many diadems.

  216. And he has a name written that no one knows but

  217. himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood,

  218. and the name by which he is called is the Word

  219. of God. Logos Elohim. And the armies of heaven,

  220. arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following

  221. him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp

  222. sword with which to strike down the nations,

  223. and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He

  224. will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath

  225. of God, the Almighty. On his robe and on his

  226. thigh, he has a name written, King of Kings and

  227. Lord of Lords. Isn't that amazing? This second

  228. triumphal entry will be like none other. The

  229. second coming of Christ, the just king who has

  230. returned as promised. Then I saw heaven open,

  231. just like he rode in to Jerusalem and went to

  232. the temple. He, heaven will open and every eye

  233. will see him on that day. The first day, surprise,

  234. the king is here. Who's this guy? The second

  235. time, surprise, the king is here. Oh my gosh.

  236. Terrified. Because he's not coming on a donkey

  237. this time. He's coming on a horse to make war.

  238. That's our God. If you ever get a chance to listen

  239. to that message. It's a message called, That's

  240. My King. Look it up. It's on YouTube. You'll

  241. love it. But look, it says, the one sitting.

  242. on this horse. Behold, look, pay attention, see

  243. the white horse. The one sitting on it is called

  244. faithful and true. The word true here means that

  245. which by nature corresponds to and has the name,

  246. the genuine, the real, the true. In other words,

  247. his name, faithful and true, is who he is. And

  248. in righteousness, in justice, in virtue that

  249. gives each one their due. Understand this. Christ

  250. came to take away for his people what was due

  251. to them. Death. When he comes this time, he will

  252. give what's due to them. His wrath. They will

  253. get their due. He judges. This word judges means

  254. to summon to trial. That one's case is examined

  255. and judgment is passed. When he comes, you will

  256. be brought before the throne of the king and

  257. he will pass judgment upon you and it will be

  258. done. You don't have any hope once he returns.

  259. Now is your hope. Now, if you hear him call,

  260. repent. Now is the day of salvation. Not tomorrow.

  261. Not when I get my life right. Not when everything

  262. becomes okay for me. By then it might be too

  263. late. Now, don't harden your hearts. Isn't that

  264. interesting? He comes to judge. He comes to examine

  265. one's case and to pass condemnation. And he makes

  266. war. If you're a dude, that's right. It's done.

  267. Let's go. It's the idea. The just king reigns.

  268. The just king reigns. Revelation 19, 12 through

  269. 16 says, his eyes are like flame of fire. There

  270. is nothing outside of his purview. He sees all

  271. things all the way down to the minute detail

  272. that you can imagine. He knows the thoughts and

  273. intents of your heart. He can know and see all

  274. things. He has a name written that no one knows

  275. but himself. Can you imagine how holy and magnificent

  276. that name is? There's no words in the English

  277. language or in any language on the face of the

  278. earth that can describe God sufficiently. But

  279. this name, he is clothed in a robe dipped in

  280. blood. Whose blood? His blood. His blood. He

  281. dipped his robe in blood for you. It's not him

  282. riding on a horse and the blood going up to the

  283. bridle. That's the blood. No. This blood. His

  284. blood. Why? Because the name by which he is called

  285. is the word of God. The gospel. The word of God.

  286. The living word. And the armies. You notice this.

  287. Chris Tomlin sings a God of many armies. This

  288. is not just an army. This is armies upon armies.

  289. And the armies of heaven arrayed in fine linen,

  290. white and pure, were following him on white horses.

  291. Who are those arrayed in fine linen, white and

  292. pure? All of his people. Those who have been

  293. martyred. Who have given their lives for Christ

  294. and his gospel. Those who belong to him. You

  295. are those who are arrayed in fine linen with

  296. white and pure. And look what it says. we are

  297. following him on white horses, just like the

  298. sons of Abdon. Why? Because the judge of all

  299. the universe has entered into man's presence

  300. again as judge and king, and his sons follow

  301. him. What a terrifying moment for the world to

  302. see. I don't know about you, I'm kind of glad

  303. to be part of that army. And on a white horse

  304. at that. You know why it's white horses? for

  305. you and me, because we're royalty. From his mouth

  306. comes a sharp sword with which he strikes down

  307. the nations. He destroys the nations by the very

  308. word of his mouth. What a day that will be. And

  309. he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will

  310. tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath

  311. of God the Almighty. If you have any questions

  312. about that, turn to chapter 14. Verse 17, it

  313. says, then another angel came out of the temple

  314. in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. And

  315. another angel came out from the altar, the angel

  316. who has authority over the fire. And he called

  317. out with a loud voice to the one who had the

  318. sharp sickle, put in your sickle and gather the

  319. clusters from the vine of the earth. for its

  320. grapes are ripe. So the angel swung the sickle

  321. across the earth and gathered the grape harvest

  322. of the earth and threw it into the great winepress

  323. of the wrath of God. I'm going to make this as

  324. gently as I possibly can, and I say it respectfully

  325. and lovingly. If you're stuck in dispensational

  326. theology, run. Get out of it. Because chapter

  327. 14, is a clear reference to chapter 19 of him

  328. coming and he will tread the winepress of the

  329. fury of the wrath of God. It's pretty clear.

  330. This is a God who reigns and rules. This is the

  331. greatness of our God, the glory that he alone

  332. is judge and that no sin will go uncovered. Why?

  333. Because when he comes this time, when he comes

  334. again, he comes as a conquering king, a righteous

  335. judge, waging war, judging the nations, pouring

  336. out his wrath. He comes with armies, not alone,

  337. but with myriads upon myriads, all riding white

  338. horses. Why? Because he's the Lamb of God. He

  339. is the King of Kings, and he is the Lord of Lords.

  340. He reigns. So every Palm Sunday, You have from

  341. now on, I hope you see that the king who comes

  342. in humbly will return on a horse as just and

  343. righteous king. He reigns, make no mistake. So

  344. much so that he stated all authority. All authority

  345. has been given unto me. And he also says, today,

  346. the enemy will be cast down. Today, we have no

  347. enemy. That's greater than sin itself by which

  348. he has gained victory over life, over death,

  349. sin, and the grave. There is no greater enemies.

  350. And the greatest of those enemies is sin. It's

  351. not Satan. Satan is a created creature. How important

  352. is our king to you? So what do you do this week?

  353. What should you do every single day of the week?

  354. 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Preach Christ

  355. and him crucified. He's coming again. That's

  356. your responsibility as believers. Tell the world

  357. of the king and the work that the king has done.

  358. He reigns. He rules. You have no enemy greater

  359. than the issue of sin. He has defeated that enemy.

  360. Live victoriously. Our king has won. And we will

  361. be coming riding on white horses. as we follow

  362. him into the kingdom that he has prepared for

  363. us. Father, I want to thank you so much for your

  364. goodness and faithfulness. Thank you, Lord, for

  365. your word. Thank you that you are king. Thank

  366. you that you will bring us with you. Thank you

  367. that you have established your kingdom forever

  368. and ever, and that you have established your

  369. church. And that upon the gospel, the proclamation

  370. that you died on the cross, was buried and rose

  371. again on the third day to give us life. Upon

  372. that truth, Lord, you have built your church.

  373. She is strong. She is firm. She is immovable.

  374. And the gates of hell will not prevail over her.

  375. We praise you and thank you that you have brought

  376. us into your family. To you be honor and glory,

  377. power and might forever. In Jesus' name, amen.
