  1. So Psalm 119 is where we're going to be sitting

  2. for all of our service today. I'll have one verse

  3. from Deuteronomy. If you ever get a chance, like

  4. Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God. Like

  5. why would God dedicate... one entire psalm, and

  6. it's 174 verses to the word, it's because it

  7. is crucial. It's the one psalm that was given

  8. for parents to teach their kids the Hebrew alphabet.

  9. So when you see, when they would read Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:1–8

  10. verses 1 through 8, and each letter has eight

  11. verses, each of those verses would start with

  12. the letter of the alphabet, Aleph. So we, in

  13. English, you know, kind of like English isn't

  14. great when it comes to translation. So I wish

  15. we had a rhyme and we could sing them with that,

  16. but we don't. So I want us to really pay attention

  17. to the importance of the word of God. As you

  18. know, we are on a mission to really talk about

  19. our purpose as a church. Why does God have us

  20. as a church? Why has God brought you into his

  21. family? Why does God do anything? Well, it's

  22. for his glory. But he calls us, commands us,

  23. and causes us. Calls, commands, and calls. C

  24. -A -U -S -E. Causes, commands, and calls us to

  25. love him. So we are going to love God, love his

  26. word, love his ways, love his things. And that

  27. is really looking at the reality of the broadness

  28. of the Christian life, what we're to be doing.

  29. So we talked about loving God, and we talked

  30. about loving God last week from the perspective

  31. of where our treasure is. And that expression

  32. of that treasure is the least value of the thing

  33. that you have. We talked about that money really

  34. has no real true intrinsic value in reality.

  35. You are born without it. You die without it.

  36. There is nothing within reality of money. But

  37. why do we hold on to it so tightly and not willing

  38. to give it away? So we deal with that issue last

  39. week. Now we're going to talk about loving his

  40. word because we can't really learn to give away

  41. our treasure until we understand God and his

  42. character and what he commands for us and the

  43. ways that we should live. So he tells us those

  44. things through his word. Love his word. Delight

  45. in his word. It is impossible to know God unless

  46. he has been pleased to make himself known to

  47. man. I want you to think about that. So if God

  48. had created all of us, which he has, placed us

  49. on the earth, the only reason why you know about

  50. him is because he was pleased to tell you about

  51. himself. God didn't have to say a single word

  52. to you about who he was. He could let us as ants

  53. just live our lives and die and not even think

  54. about us. But that's not what God intended for

  55. us to be when he communes. So it's impossible

  56. to know God unless he has been pleased to make

  57. himself known to man. He recognizes the force

  58. of Zophar's question in Job 11 .7. Can you, by

  59. searching, find out God? Can you, in your own

  60. purpose, drive, ever really find out God by your

  61. own desire? It seems utterly impossible to him

  62. that man, by his unaided reason, should discover

  63. God, and he therefore considers the question,

  64. has God spoken? Numbers 23, 19. As one of the

  65. utmost importance. Lewis Berkhoff, 1942. Really?

  66. Why does man seek God? Because God was pleased

  67. to reveal himself. Why would man, after God is

  68. pleased to reveal himself, even have the desire

  69. to go and seek after him because God has placed

  70. it there? What is the Word of God? There are

  71. many answers that I could give that would describe

  72. biblically and scripturally what the Word of

  73. God is, really well for itself in its own definition.

  74. And he clarifies this definition pretty revealing

  75. throughout the scripture of what his word is.

  76. So we're going to answer that question. The revealing

  77. of God by inspiration given through men as he

  78. led them to accurately record and communicate

  79. his character and message is known as inspiration

  80. of scripture. and the revealing of God in his

  81. incarnation through the virgin birth by the power

  82. of the Holy Spirit, he is called the Logos, known

  83. as the living word. 2 Timothy 3 .16, John 1 .1.

  84. The word of God is living and active, sharper

  85. than a two -edged sword, piercing to the division

  86. of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow,

  87. and discerning the thoughts and intentions of

  88. the heart. Hebrews 4. The word is the sustainer

  89. and giver of life. The very word of God sustains

  90. you and gives you life. Matthew 4, 4. But he

  91. answered, it is written, man shall not live but

  92. by bread alone, but by every word that comes

  93. from the mouth of God. Psalm 119, 93. I will

  94. never forget your precepts, for by them you have

  95. given me. So what is the word of God? Jesus the

  96. Christ. He is the word of God. And he was pleased

  97. to put his character and his message on display

  98. for us to read and to know him. And it's only

  99. enough for life and godliness. All the answers

  100. that you will ever desire to be answered by God,

  101. not all of them, are written. Example, the Trinity.

  102. Is there anything in all of Scripture, in all

  103. of creation, that can clearly give us a full

  104. understanding of the triune, the triuneness of

  105. God? That God in his wisdom as Yahweh Elohim

  106. has represented himself as the three in one,

  107. the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Knowing

  108. that the only way to fulfill the promise he made

  109. to Adam and Eve when he cursed the snake, I will

  110. put an enmity between you and the woman, between

  111. your seed and her seed, could only come by the

  112. God -man himself. That the purpose of the triune

  113. God in his wisdom and in his foreknowledge That

  114. through the very plan of the Father, the fulfillment

  115. in the Son, and the guarantee of the Holy Spirit,

  116. that salvation is an impossibility without the

  117. Trinity of God. How would we know that? Ephesians

  118. 1. Because the Word of God tells us so. You cannot

  119. have salvation without the Father planning it.

  120. You cannot have the fullness of salvation without

  121. the Son fulfilling it. And you can't have the

  122. guarantee of your inheritance without the Holy

  123. Spirit being your guarantee as a deposit. It's

  124. an impossibility. That's the importance of the

  125. Trinity. To go any further than that, I would

  126. really do it in injustice to try to explain why

  127. God is triune. but communion. God has caused

  128. and commands us to love his word. John 14, 15

  129. said this to you last week. If you love me, you

  130. will keep my commandments. Psalm 119, 97. Oh,

  131. how I love your law. It is my meditation all

  132. the day. Do you love God's word where you are

  133. willing to drive in your car, sit in your house?

  134. And just listen to the word of God spoken to

  135. you. Go home when you have the time. Sit down

  136. and open it and read it and let him speak to

  137. you. Are you willing to listen to his word through

  138. the music that he's provided? Are you saturating

  139. your life with the logos? Or is Christian life

  140. just a means to an end where you can come and

  141. do your ritual responsibility on a Sunday morning

  142. and say, I've done my job. Listen to this psalmist

  143. says, oh, how I love your law. It is my meditation

  144. all the day. It's all he thinks about. You'd

  145. be like, that's a little crazy. That man doesn't

  146. get involved with the craziness that's going

  147. on in our world today because his mind is where

  148. it needs to be. Set your mind on things above,

  149. not on things of the earth. Oh, Psalm 119, 113.

  150. I hate the double -minded, but I love your law.

  151. I hate those who are wavering all the time, that

  152. never really can make a final decision. They

  153. just one minute here, next minute there. Why?

  154. Because they have nothing to stand on. There

  155. is nothing that their feet is steady on. But

  156. this man loves God's law. Psalm 119, verse 119.

    Psalms 119:119

  157. Therefore, I love your testimonies. I love your

  158. testimonies. I love your words. Psalm 119 verse

    Psalms 119:32

  159. 32, I will run in the way of your commandments

  160. when you enlarge my heart. God is busy sanctifying

  161. and enlarging your heart and your love for his

  162. word. Do you hunger and thirst for his word?

  163. As a deer pants after the water, so my soul longs

  164. after you. God commands us to obey his word.

  165. 1 John 2, 4 -6. Whoever says I know him but does

  166. not keep his commandments is a liar and the truth

  167. is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, in

  168. him truly the love of God is perfected. By this

  169. we may know that we are in him. Whoever says

  170. he abides in him ought to walk in the same way

  171. in which he walked. Do we live like the Logos?

  172. Psalm 119, verse 1 through 4. Blessed are those

    Psalms 119:1–4

  173. whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of

  174. the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,

  175. who seek him with their whole heart, who also

  176. do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded

  177. your precepts to be kept diligently. You hear

  178. that? Not an option. Psalm 119 verse 44 through

    Psalms 119:44–45

  179. 45. I will keep your law continually forever

  180. and ever and I shall walk in a wide place for

  181. I sought your precepts. Now I want you to get

  182. that. For those of us who walk according to the

  183. law and the word of God, we have a broadness

  184. to our ability to live within the confines of

  185. the world that he's placed us in. I'm not confined

  186. to the way of the world. Where Christ is in my

  187. life, I have the freedom now to go outside of

  188. that and to touch and to preach and to teach

  189. and to walk with and to love and to serve those

  190. outside of that little narrow way. Which in reality,

  191. that little narrow way that the world says is

  192. narrow because it's their way or the highway.

  193. God's way is... Really, narrower, if that's a

  194. word. My English is terrible, so I don't really

  195. care. But my ability to live outside of the lines

  196. is much more greater. You have any questions

  197. about that? Look at Jesus' life. What did he

  198. do? Hey, Matt, I'm going to your house to have

  199. dinner. I'm a tax collector. Hey, don't stop

  200. her from anointing my head. What? She's a prostitute.

  201. Writes in the sand. He who is without sin cast

  202. the first stone. Where are your accusers? Then

  203. neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.

  204. That's a really broad way of living, don't you

  205. think? Why? Because he lives narrow. He lives

  206. according to the word. Because he lives here,

  207. he can serve here. That's the idea here. I shall

  208. walk in a wide place, for I have sought your...

  209. God commands us to teach his word. Colossians

  210. 3 .16, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  211. teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  212. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

  213. and with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  214. Do you see that? That not only are we teaching

  215. and preaching, we are teaching and preaching

  216. through music. Every opportunity we have. By

  217. every means that God has provided, we can teach

  218. and preach and richly bless those who need to

  219. hear the word of God. Psalm 119, verse 13. This

    Psalms 119:13

  220. is the only verse outside of Psalm 119 I told

  221. you I was going to give you. Well, that's not

  222. true. I gave you some Johns and stuff, but this

  223. is specifically one that I'm using. Deuteronomy

  224. 6, 4 through 9. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our

  225. God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord

  226. your God with all your heart and with all your

  227. soul and with all your might. And these words

  228. that I command to you today shall be on your

  229. heart. You shall teach them diligently. You shall

  230. teach them diligently. You shall teach them diligently

  231. to your children. and shall talk with them when

  232. you sit in your house and when you walk by the

  233. way and when you lie down and when you rise.

  234. You shall bind them as signs on your forehead,

  235. on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets

  236. between your eyes, and you shall write them on

  237. the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  238. Can you imagine that? Where you walk into someone's

  239. house and the only thing that you see is Scripture

  240. everywhere. I want you to notice something here.

  241. I think this is one of the things that parents

  242. have a difficult time understanding. You don't

  243. schedule time teaching your kids. You teach your

  244. kids throughout the day. You teach them when

  245. you're sitting in your house. You teach them

  246. when you're walking down the road. You teach

  247. them when they go to bed and when they get back

  248. up. You teach them when you go to Walmart or

  249. Weiss. You teach them about Christ everywhere.

  250. It's not just, you know, hey, I'm going to schedule

  251. my time with you today. It's in your daily walk

  252. and driving that you talk about Jesus all the

  253. time. That doesn't mean that you don't set apart

  254. time for family worship or family reading. That's

  255. okay too. But notice it says here, when you lie

  256. down and when you sit and when you walk and when

  257. you rise. It's in your everyday moment. Give

  258. Christ richly in their lives. Do you delight

  259. in God's word? How important is God's word to

  260. you? Psalm 119, verse 14 and 16. In the way of

    Psalms 119:14

  261. your testimonies, I delight as much as in all

  262. riches. Verse 16, I will delight in your statutes.

  263. I will not forget your word. Verse 20. My soul

  264. is consumed with longing for your rules at all

  265. times. Verse 24, your testimonies are my delight.

  266. They are my counselors. 34, give me understanding

  267. that I may keep your law and observe it with

  268. all my whole heart. Verse 35, lead me in the

  269. path of your commandments for I delight in it.

  270. Verse 47, I'll read verse 46 first. I will also

  271. speak of your testimonies before kings and shall

  272. not be put to shame for I find my delight in

  273. your commandments which I love. Verse 77, let

  274. your mercy come to me. That I may live for your

  275. law is my delight. Verse 89. Forever, O Lord,

  276. your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Verse

  277. 92. In your law, if your law had not been my

  278. delight, I would have perished in my affliction.

  279. Verse 143. Trouble and anguish have found me

  280. out, but your commandments are my. delight. Even

  281. he has to continue to walk in the commandments

  282. of God. Why? Because your sin will find you out.

  283. And the only way he gets through his sin is the

  284. fact that he delights in the word of God. Do

  285. you see that? Delight in the word of God and

  286. you will live. I rise before dawn and cry for

  287. help. I hope in your words. That's 147 and 174.

  288. I long for your salvation, O Lord, for your law

  289. is my delight. Do you get the point? How important

  290. is the word of God to you? Or do you just let

  291. it go throughout your days and weeks or months

  292. and it really has no means to you? Your very

  293. existence, you live because God says you do.

  294. Psalm 119 verse 151 and 152. I want you to hear

    Psalms 119:151

  295. these last few verses. But you are near, O Lord,

  296. and all your commandments are true. Hear that?

  297. This is true. Fox News is not true. CNN, not

  298. true. MSNBC, not true. What's true? God's word

  299. is true. It has always been true. They can say

  300. whatever they want to say. It's not true. There's

  301. only one thing that's true. It's called the word

  302. of God. We live in the days of lies. Walk in

  303. his truth. So you can see the lie. Psalm 119

    Psalms 119:60

  304. verse 60. Let me keep reading. I'm sorry, I forgot.

  305. 152, I forgot. Long have I known your testimonies

  306. that you have founded them forever. Do you know

  307. why God's word is true? Because it is everlasting.

  308. Psalm 119, 116. The sum of your word is truth.

  309. And every one of your righteous rules endures

  310. forever. The world's going to tell you this isn't

  311. true. It doesn't matter. I really don't care

  312. what they say. I know it's true. I'm a listening

  313. testimony of his truth. He's changed my life.

  314. If you knew what I was before you ever knew me

  315. here, I was a dog. Men are dogs. I was a dog,

  316. man. Thank God I'm not no more. You got an entire

  317. room full of testimonies of God's word. active

  318. in their lives where Christ has used his word

  319. to instill, deposit, and grow faith. The sum

  320. of your word is truth, and every one of your

  321. righteous rules endures forever. Psalm 119 verse

    Psalms 119:172

  322. 172. My tongue will sing of your word, for all

  323. your commandments are right. I'm sharing these

  324. things with you. So that you love his word. When

  325. you love his word, you will obey his word. When

  326. you obey his word, there is nothing you won't

  327. do to honor and please him. You won't listen

  328. to those around you who listen to his word because

  329. his word is true. His word is life. You won't

  330. be paying attention to the narratives and the

  331. nonsense because the word of God is true. It

  332. is life. I'm so glad that we talked about this

  333. today. I think we live in such a rich, overwhelming

  334. time where all the information that you could

  335. ever want and desire is at your fingertips, literally.

  336. And the one place we don't go to, because we

  337. know it's true, at least we hope, is His Word.

  338. I'd rather listen to the morning show for truth.

  339. And every day, we're disappointed. It's sad,

  340. but I should have expected it, right? That justice

  341. for the children who have been mistreated, abused,

  342. neglected, sold, will one day come under the

  343. wrath of a mighty God. Because the malarkey that

  344. we're being fed today, how do I know that? Scripture

  345. says, Vince's mind says, Lord, I will repay.

  346. Every evil deed that man covers, God will expose

  347. on his day. On his day. Because God is true.

  348. We must be different. We must shine differently.

  349. We must be different than any movement. We must

  350. be different. We must be a light on a hill. A

  351. shining city on a hill. We must not put our light

  352. under a bowl. We must walk. In the word. Thy

  353. word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto

  354. my path. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and

  355. a light unto my path. Father, I want to thank

  356. you so much that your word is true. It has been

  357. established forever that you have, as the Logos,

  358. have put on flesh and have shown us the word

  359. in action, in living. And then in your wisdom,

  360. through thousands of years, through 40 men, 66

  361. books, you have given us your... canon, your

  362. word, that declares and proclaims the goodness

  363. of our God, the fulfillment of his promise in

  364. the redemption of mankind through the Son. We

  365. praise you and thank you. And we are reminded

  366. in the same way that Jesus had mentioned to the

  367. men on the road to Emmaus, have you not read

  368. all that Moses and the prophets have said about

  369. me? We thank you that you are the living To you

  370. be honor and glory. And may we read the inspired

  371. word to see our God and to know you better. In

  372. Jesus' name, amen.
