  1. In the name of the glorious Trinity, Father and Son and Holy

  2. Spirit, forever Amen. Glory be to the everlasting

  3. mercies which sent you to us, O Christ, the Light of the world

  4. and the life of all. Give us wisdom by your law and

  5. enlighten our impulses by Your knowledge.

  6. Sanctify our souls by Your truth and grant that we may be

  7. obedient to Your words and may fulfil Your commandments at

  8. every hour. O You who enlightens the

  9. rational with the knowledge of Your greatness, do enlight, O my

  10. Lord, our thoughts, that we may meditate upon Your holy and

  11. divine Scriptures at all times. O Lord of all, Father and Son

  12. and Holy Spirit, forever. Amen.

  13. The question is back during the fasting period or the lentil

  14. period, what if I cannot fast due to medical reasons or

  15. ailments The past three episodes.

  16. This is the fourth episode we're discussing fasting because we

  17. are during this period of offering how fast during the

  18. great fast period. Last episode, we discussed and

  19. ascertained the three ways that we can fast.

  20. But then we also, you know, we, we came to a conclusion or we,

  21. we discussed that, you know, you can offer a fast between you and

  22. your Lord. However, we must be careful that

  23. we cannot, we cannot mock God, we cannot fool God.

  24. We cannot say something to mankind and fool mankind and say

  25. the same thing to God and expect that God will not know God's.

  26. God is omniscient. God is omnipresent.

  27. God is omnipotent. The last episode was tips on

  28. fasting. Today we'd like to discuss this

  29. question and thank you for those who.

  30. I think there was a few people who reached out to me through

  31. text. It was 2 texts I believe and a

  32. message on messenger. In any case, what if I cannot

  33. fast during medical reasons for due to medical reasons or

  34. ailments? Well, what I'm going to do in

  35. this episode, I'm going to quote Saint John Chrysostom, a lot of

  36. Saint John Chrysostom's homily. I will quote two different

  37. homilies. I will quote it because he

  38. replies it very beautifully, very divinely inspired.

  39. So for those who cannot offer a fast genuinely now, let me give

  40. you a disclaimer beforehand. There are people that I have met

  41. in hospitals, young and old, who have have been admitted to

  42. hospital and had to go treatment.

  43. But their advice or their request was that during, for

  44. example, outside of the lentil period during Wednesdays and

  45. Fridays or on Wednesday or on a Friday, they will abstain from

  46. eating meat. They fast on Wednesdays and

  47. Fridays they're in hospital, they're sick.

  48. And at times the physician or the hospital has recommended

  49. that no, you need to, you gotta, you know, you need to have this

  50. type of foods. But they replies no, no, no, on

  51. a Wednesday and on Friday, my religious, this is my religious

  52. responsibility and my religious right, my spiritual right, that

  53. I will not eat meat on a Friday or a Wednesday.

  54. Now during lentil period during fasting again, there has been

  55. some elderly who have been in hospital for treatment and they

  56. have requested that during their fast that they do will not

  57. consume any non fasting food, no poultry, no dairy products.

  58. OK, So, and this is not to not not playing on your you know,

  59. this is not a guilt trip. No, no, it's not.

  60. But I'm just as a as a disclaimer, just want to share

  61. this with you that there are people that have been in some

  62. dire situations, yet they have still offered their fast.

  63. Now has God granted them the strength?

  64. Possibly. Maybe some can't and some have.

  65. So this is not to compare, but just as a disclaimer and maybe

  66. as an encouragement, an encouraging point.

  67. In any case, Saint John Chrysostom writes in reply to

  68. the question, what if I am sick and I cannot offer a fast?

  69. He writes this. No logical man will be able to

  70. criticize you for that. Besides, we have a Lord who is

  71. meek and loving, philanthropic, and who does not ask for

  72. anything beyond our power. How beautiful is that?

  73. Yes. Ring that.

  74. You know, bells are ringing. Matthew.

  75. Yes. Matthew 11.

  76. What verses? Yeah. 28 to 30.

  77. That's right. Come to me, all you who labor

  78. and carry burdens, and I will give you rest.

  79. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and

  80. meek in my heart, and you will find rest for your souls, for my

  81. yoke is pleasant, and my burden is light.

  82. Amen to that. Hebrews chapter 4, verse 15.

    Hebrews 4:15

  83. Saint Paul writes and this is one of my favorite verses in in

  84. the Scriptures many verses but Hebrews 14 Hebrews chapter 14.

  85. Sorry. Hebrews chapter 4 verse 15 for

    Hebrews 4:15

  86. we do not have a high priest who cannot suffer with our weakness.

  87. Now some versions have translated it sympathize.

  88. No, no, no, no. Suffer with our weaknesses

  89. because we don't sympathize when we're when we're when we sin, we

  90. suffer because of us blessed. Those who mourn mourn, suffer

  91. because of our sins, right or over our sins.

  92. We mourn over our sins. For we do not have a high priest

  93. who cannot suffer with our weaknesses, but one who was

  94. tempted in all things like we are apart from sin.

  95. However, however, to burst your bubble, as you're probably

  96. thinking, well, what last week's episode was about, it's totally

  97. now contradicting. No, no, no, no, no, it's not

  98. contradicting. Jesus still fasted, right?

  99. Jesus didn't need to fast, He still fasted.

  100. Jesus didn't need to pray. He still prayed.

  101. He still showed charity right. The question is, what if I

  102. cannot fast when I am ill? Genuinely, you cannot fool God.

  103. You can fool the Church, you can fool your parish priest, you can

  104. fool your diocese and Bishop, you can fool the Catholic or

  105. Patriarch, but you cannot fool God.

  106. You cannot put one over God. We fast.

  107. We must fast. We should when we are able and

  108. well enough to do. And yet again, going back to the

  109. disclaimer, there have been people that have been ill and,

  110. and, and not well physically and you know, medically, yet they

  111. have still offered their fast. So John Chrysostom continues

  112. with his homily as to why there cannot be any criticism of those

  113. who are ill in a fasting. He writes this because he, that

  114. is Jesus, did not require the abstinence from foods.

  115. Jesus didn't say you need to abstain.

  116. He said when you fast, that means we will fast, right?

  117. When you fast, we will fast and we should fast.

  118. Why? Because Jesus fasted, neither

  119. does he require that the fast take place for the simple sake

  120. of fasting to keep Dasha Gennard happy so that he, when he sees

  121. me, he won't, you know, when he's, when he, when he's looking

  122. at my pictures and you know, so that he can't see that I'm not

  123. fasting. I'm going to put all those

  124. pictures where I'm eating the falafels and the Pachen and what

  125. have you. But the others I'm going to

  126. block him from. No, no, no, that's not the

  127. fasting that Jesus has has required of us when you fast.

  128. He said this is not the don't do it just for the sake of fasting

  129. saw melechina. You know, some say, are you

  130. fasting? I saw mele like I have to do it

  131. for the sake of doing it. No, no, you fast because you

  132. want to do it because simply Jesus did it.

  133. And why? Because of our sins.

  134. Jesus fasted. Remember, he fasted 40 days and

  135. 40 nights to take on Satan. Did he need to like this was his

  136. armor. This was his energy boost

  137. because he fasted, he took on Satan and he hammered and

  138. destroyed Satan. No, no, no, that's an example

  139. for us that through fasting and praying and holy scriptures and

  140. the lives of the Saints and attending church services and

  141. offering charity, which is what what we're going to be talking

  142. about next episode to show us that this is how we can overcome

  143. our sin and the one who causes us to sin because of our evil

  144. desires. Neither is his aim.

  145. That is Jesus aim and John Chrysostom writes that we may

  146. remain with empty stomachs. That's not his aim.

  147. So those who are ill and sick and cannot fast, we cannot

  148. criticize, but that now he's, he's the bursting of the bubble.

  149. But that we fast to offer our entire selves to the dedication

  150. of spiritual things, having distanced ourselves from secular

  151. things. Some people cannot fasten it

  152. physically because of the medical situation.

  153. But this is the fast that see, they still need to fast.

  154. They still need to abstain from having distance, abstain by

  155. distancing themselves from secular things.

  156. Christ mentioned something along these lines when it comes to

  157. gaining the secular world and all that is in it.

  158. Yeah, again, bells are ringing. Mark 8, Mark chapter 8, verse 36

    Mark 8:36

  159. for he. How is a man profitable?

  160. What profit does a man have if he should gain the entire world

  161. and yet should lose his soul? What profit is there?

  162. So, you know, he's talking about the secular world during Lent,

  163. during fasting, if you're unable, genuinely unable to

  164. abstain from food or to or to, you know, abstain from food that

  165. is outside of the fast, well, fast with the soul again.

  166. Again, beloved, so that we don't assume that Saint John

  167. Chrysostom is totally dismissing fasting.

  168. This is what he writes now for there exist, there really exist

  169. ways which we are even more, which are even more important

  170. than abstinence from food, which can open the gates, which lead

  171. to God with boldness for those who can't fast, you know the

  172. food product. He therefore who eats and cannot

  173. fast let him display richer alms giving.

  174. Do more Thanksgiving charity help.

  175. Everyday you see someone homeless, go and buy that person

  176. a meal. You see someone who's lying in

  177. the streets, go and book them in in a hotel for a few days, help

  178. them. You see someone who is who is

  179. with ragged clothes and torn and shags.

  180. Whatever, you go and buy that person some some new clothes.

  181. Clothe the person. If you can't fast from food, let

  182. him pray more. Let him have a more intense

  183. desire to hear divine words. Reading the Holy Scriptures in

  184. this our somatic illness is not a hindrance, St.

  185. John Chrysostom writes. You can't say I'm sick.

  186. I'm physically not well, therefore I can't read the

  187. Scriptures, or I can't pray, or I can't give arms.

  188. No, that then becomes a lie. Not a deception, but a blunt,

  189. outright lie. Let him become reconciled with

  190. his enemies. I can't fast from food, but I'm

  191. going to pick up the phone and call my enemy, not my BBF.

  192. We haven't spoken for a week. My enemy, the person who has

  193. hurt me, I'm going to call and try to reconcile.

  194. This is the fast that I'm going to offer to God, because I

  195. genuinely cannot offer a fast which pertains to food.

  196. But when I but can, it is both the food factor, because we

  197. spoke about this on the second episode, and also the spiritual

  198. factor. Let him become reconciled with

  199. his enemies. Let him distance from his soul

  200. every resentment, anger, bitterness, hatred.

  201. In another homily he writes. How do you fast?

  202. Give me proof of it by your works again.

  203. Here it is. This is he's echoing St.

  204. James. You have faith, you will tell

  205. me. Show me your faith.

  206. Show me your faith without works and I will tell you.

  207. I will show you my faith with works.

  208. Give me proof of it by your works.

  209. If you see someone who is poor, take pity on that person.

  210. If you see a friend being honoured, do not be envious.

  211. Why do we try to put people down when they're successful in life?

  212. Why do we try people down when they're, when they reach a point

  213. in life there that they've accomplished something?

  214. Why don't we applaud and, and pray for that person?

  215. Why don't we become a beacon of help and advice for that person?

  216. In other words, congratulate the brother and then tell the

  217. brother that I will continue to pray that you will succeed even

  218. more, but I will pray more so that you do not enter pride.

  219. I will pray that you do not forget the Lord, your God, your

  220. Savior. I will pray that every success

  221. you have, you share with those who are not successful, the

  222. deprived ones, don't be envious, maybe even speak and and receive

  223. advice. You know, how did you do this

  224. and those who are on it, right? Don't withhold information,

  225. share it. Share your success with people.

  226. Have everyone become successful as you I I know friends and

  227. brothers. When they have been successful,

  228. they actually go out and advise their friends, their relatives,

  229. family, friends. Do this.

  230. Go out and try this. This is good.

  231. You'll be successful and in this way you can help your family,

  232. you can help your friends, you can help your relatives, you can

  233. help your nation, you can help your church, you can help the

  234. needy that you can do more charitable.

  235. This is this is Christianity. There's nothing wrong with being

  236. wealthy and successful in anything, not just wealth,

  237. education, capabilities, whatever it is during fast.

  238. If you can't offer the faster food, don't be envious.

  239. When your brother is successful, don't be envious, period.

  240. Do not let only your mouth fast, writes St.

  241. John Chrysostom. But also the eyes and the feet

  242. and the hands and all the members of your bodies.

  243. Let the hand fast by being free from greediness.

  244. But I'm going to go one step further.

  245. Let the hand fast from evil and abominable acts of, of, of

  246. fulfilling the desires of the flesh.

  247. Let both male and female, both male and female e-mail.

  248. Let the hands fast from be and showing, expressing your anger,

  249. your hatred. Let the hand fast from stealing

  250. from greed, from working any evil.

  251. Work with the hand. Let the feet fast by ceasing to

  252. run, ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast by

  253. disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful.

  254. Delete that site. Delete the site.

  255. And we've spoken about this and I will continue to hammer this

  256. message until the Lord returns. Delete the site.

  257. You don't need to go there. Refrain from going into your

  258. room and closing the door and locking it so that mom or dad or

  259. sister don't enter that room. No, no, leave it open.

  260. Leave it open. Come, I'm fasting.

  261. I'm trying to overcome this addiction, this demon of sexual

  262. immorality. I'm going to leave my door open

  263. so that I don't have to hide anything.

  264. That's what's in John Chrysostom is saying if you can't fast

  265. pertaining to food when you're sick.

  266. But if you're not, if you can, you need to do both.

  267. Let the ears fast by not listening to evil talk and

  268. gossip and and filthy lyrics to music and rap and pop and hip

  269. hop and mop pop and top top. I don't know what they called.

  270. You know, I'm I'm getting old. I'm I'm I'm in 60.

  271. I'm I'm not with the trend anymore.

  272. Can I ask a question? You post something of yourself

  273. on Instagram in front of the mirror and you've posted

  274. yourself and you hardly see the face because the camera's in

  275. front of the face. And then the background music is

  276. all cussing and swearing and the B word and the F word and why I

  277. feel like what? What is in that?

  278. What, what joy is there? Let the ears not listen to talk

  279. and gossip and evil lyrics. Let the mouth fast from foul

  280. words and unjust criticism. Going back to the songs, and I

  281. said this in in the Assyrian segment, our beloved performers,

  282. artists, artists, singers, performers, vocalists, whatever

  283. you want to call them, we love you and we thank you for what

  284. you do. We'd like to see more of you in

  285. church number one. And some do, some are in church,

  286. some are entertaining a wedding feast.

  287. But then on a Sunday they're praising God as well.

  288. But how can I entertain on a wedding feast with some words

  289. that are quite not Christian and not a not respectful and then

  290. come back in the House of Lord and say Baba and Bishmaiya and

  291. in an in on on the Saturday evening or in in my own song I'm

  292. talking about breasts and why? How can that be?

  293. Saint James writes, How can a fountain produce both sweet and

  294. bitter water? How can with the mouth you

  295. praise God, you curse, See. Yeah.

  296. We need to go far. We need to go further than this.

  297. That's going too far. How far do you go for how far do

  298. you go for holiness? How far you know Jesus, how far

  299. Jesus went for our righteousness?

  300. He died on the Christ. He shed his blood.

  301. He shed his blood. He didn't just come and speak to

  302. us and showed us and, and said a few jokes and then gave us some

  303. parables and said God bless you. I'm your friend.

  304. Hey, you know I'm your friend. No, no, he didn't do that.

  305. He died on the cross for you and I.

  306. How far do you go for righteousness?

  307. How far do you go to show your respect and your love?

  308. And your appreciation to the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on

  309. you before you on the cross. So John Chrysostom goes on, show

  310. me your fast bite. For what good is it if you

  311. abstained from birds and fishes, but bite and devour your brother

  312. and sister. We've spoken about this, so show

  313. me your fast bio works. If you can't fast, the question,

  314. what happens if you're sick and you're ill and you're genuinely

  315. cannot fast or fast with your hand, with your mouth, with your

  316. eyes, with your feet, with your heart, with your mind, with your

  317. soul and heart and, and, and the entire body to glorify God, to

  318. come closer to God, to open that gate that will draw you closer

  319. to God, our Creator. Praise him.

  320. Glory be to his holy name now in the old times and forever.

  321. Amen. We hope you enjoyed this week's
